MOJACAR Pueblo’s Night of the Candles proved to be a glowing success, attracting even more visitors than last year. Figures from the event organisation, the bus company which laid on the special service to the village and Local Police put the number of people enjoying the annual celebration last Thursday at around 14,000. In what was the eighth edition of the annual event to mark the appearance of the ‘Tears of Saint Lawrence’ meteor shower, the historic village’s streets, plazas and monuments were illuminated by some 6,000 candles. Making the night even more atmospheric, the village echoed to the sounds of live performances of evocative music and a street procession with drums and torches. Up at the castle viewing point there were telescopes for some serious star gazing. The local authority said the event represented an important

Mojacar Pueblo Traders Association President Antonio Rodriguez said hotels had been virtually booked out on the night and bars and restaurants had been busy until the early hours of the morning. According to the council visitor numbers to Mojacar have been increasing in recent years.
The number of tourists visiting Mojacar Pueblo in June was up 10 per cent on the same month of 2018, while in the first fortnight of July the municipality’s hotels registered an average of 90 per cent occupation levels.

Guardia Civil arrested three young men for grievous bodily harm and for issuing threats with a firearm following the altercation in Las Marinas. The victim claimed the three were having a go at his girlfriend and her mates and he simply asked them to show some respect. He told officers they attacked him and waved a knife at him. REINFORCING the competitiveness of Almeria’s tourism sector by ensuring maximum quality while building on the province’s image and range of attractions. These are the main objectives behind grants and assistance for local authorities and businesses, explained Junta de Andalucia Tourism Territorial Delegate Jose Luis Delgado during a visit to Mojacar to meet with representatives from towns across the area. Hosted by Mojacar mayor Rosa Maria Cano, Tourism councillor Emmanuel Agüero and council Tourism Director Carmen Garcia Campoy, last week’s meeting allowed the delegate to outline in person how his department plans to work with local authorities and the business community over the next four years. Also present to outline the subsidies and application methods, was the Junta’s Territorial Delegation head of Tourism Quality Programmes, Antonio Lopez. Four types of aid will be available to municipalities, companies and tourism entrepreneurs: two specifically aimed at local councils and two at the private sector. Efforts will also be directed at strengthening inland municipalities as tourist destinations and their cultural offer with a view to encouraging visitors to come to the province year-round. There will as well be an emphasis on the value of natural heritage and biodiversity as potential resources for growth within the tourism sector.

Patron saint THIS picture of a shrine to the Virgin Mary comes from the Spanish enclave of Ceuta which is venerating her African image, their patron saint, on Monday. Catholics there celebrate Santa Maria de Africa (Saint Mary of Africa) every August 5. The festival typically sees devotees lay flowers in for the Virgin in Ceuta’s Plaza de Africa. There is also a procession throughout the city which sees locals throw flowers from balconies. The parade is followed by fireworks.
The Santa Maria de Africa celebration has its origins not with Spain but with Portugal. Prince Henry the Navigator, who became famous for launching early Portuguese exploration efforts, sent an image of the Virgin Mary to Ceuta in 1421. The image was sent with a message which said: ‘I send you an image of the Virgin who is very devoted to me.’ The image of the Virgin Mary evolved into a representation for Africa, similar to other incarnations worshipped by Catholics including
Morocco-bound fugitive foiled A FUGITIVE from Belgian justice is under arrest after police detained him at Almeria port where he was planning to board a Morocco-bound boat. Officers identified the young man accused of belonging to a drug trafficking gang during documentation checks on passengers disembarking and boarding at the port. Police reported authorities in Antwerp issued a European arrest warrant for 22-year-old NM in January to serve a 40month prison sentence and pay a €16,000 fine for his part in a criminal network believed to have sold more than €730,000 worth of narcotics between October 2016 and March 2017. At the time of his arrest in Belgium he admitted selling cocaine and heroin for a Dutch organisation. He was commissioned by the gang to go to Gingelom in Belgium to hand over and supervise the sale of the drugs and to collect the payment.

Tarantino wants to visit the province US director Quentin Tarantino has said he wants to visit Almeria and would love to make a Spaghetti Western-style film here. Tarantino, whose latest film Once Upon A Time In Hollywood has just been released, told Golden Globes he wanted to see the province. “I would love to go there and see if these places still exist,” Tarantino said in reference to the locations of classic Westerns, including the Dollar trilogy and The Good, The Bad and The Ugly. “I love the idea of going there and shooting my own version of a Spaghetti Western in the desert,” the director added. Tarantino’s Once Upon A Time In Hollywood, which is set in the home of US cinema during the late 1960s, also pays homage to Almeria, which was a leading location for Westerns and for blockbusters like Lawrence of Arabia.

Power saving and publicity controls MOJACAR Council has unanimously approved the municipality’s energy efficient public lighting project. Part of the European Regional Development Fund 2014-2010 subsidy plan for initiatives which include low-carbon economy savings, the purpose of the project is to cut energy use and reduce expenditure. Lights will be replaced with higher performance, lower cost alternatives. Supports and electrical panels in poor condition will also be replaced. New control systems will be installed, including astronomic timers and centralised management systems. The total project will cost nearly €1.2 million, producing an expected annual energy reduction of 60 per cent and savings of more than €70,000. Also on the council meeting agenda was initial approval of a by-law to regulate the distribution of publicity materials and other promotional activities. The council said the regulation related to commercial activities in the municipality for goods and services, as well as to messages of

Among the issues it covers are handing out flyers, putting up posters, door-to-door distribution of materials, signs or materials on public roads or façades, and public address vehicles. Individuals or companies will have to get council authorisation to guarantee the promotional activity is respectful and not misleading. In addition, printed materials will have to be recyclable, using ecological inks, and advise people to dispose of them in appropriate recycling bins.
The by-law does not include electoral advertising, general communications from public administrations or public safety and emergency information. Also prohibited is publicity on beaches or on the seafront, on terraces without the owners’ consent, as well as putting up materials which cannot be dismantled in public spaces, where they are an obstacle to traffic or go onto the road. Placing leaflets on vehicle windshields, advertising on the streets and approaching passers-by are also banned.

ALMERIA City’s tourist office dealt with 7 per cent more visitors over the first six months of the year than in the first half of 2018. In total, 22,730 tourists requested information from the city centre office in Plaza Vieja. City Tourism councillor Carlos Sanchez maintained the figures were an indication the council is “working on the right lines to make our city increasingly well-known and attractive.” Just under 70 per cent of the visitors dropping into the tourist office were Spaniards. One in five were from Almeria Province, while 13 per cent were from Madrid and one in 10 live in Barcelona. British tourists accounted for nearly 30 per cent of the foreigners seeing information. One in five were French and just under 14 per cent were German. There was a notable increase in the number of visitors from Canada, the US and Scandinavia when cruise ships were in port. Visitor figures for the Gastronomy Capital of Spain headquarters for the first half of the year are also encouraging. More than 45,000 people passed by the premises in the Paseo de Almeria, either for information or to take part in one of the close to 400 food-related activities staged there. Carlos Sanchez highlighted the number of promotional activities there have been for Gastronomy Capital 2019, notably the filming of an episode of Masterchef in the city, a ONCE lottery ticket featuring an image of Almeria, advertising on London double-decker buses and publicity slots on screens in the heart of Madrid.

Road widening back on track WORKS to make the Vera to Garrucha road two lanes each way have got going again. The Andalucia regional government’s Development and Infrastructure department restarted the second phase of the A-352 project last week. Just under €15 million are
being invested in the works on the 4.3-kilometre stretch connecting with the coast road at Las Buganvillas roundabout, which have been paralysed since last autumn. The new completion date for turning the entire stretch of the road into a dual-carriageway is next summer, said
Junta de Andalucia Development, Infrastructure and Land Planning minister, Marifran Carazao. The aim is to improve safety and traffic flow on the road used by an average of 14,500 vehicles a day, rising to as many as 24,000 in summer.

Blaze controlled after day-long battle FIREFIGHTERS managed to contain a wildfire in Huercal de Almeria following a daylong battle to douse the flames. Andalucia’s Plan INFOCA wildfire service said the blaze started up in the Majada del Aguilon countryside at around 9am on Sunday morning. Some 70 firefighters were sent to put it out supported by 14 aircraft, including a heavy water dropping plane. Tackling the fire proved tricky. The area is
difficult to access by land and personnel had to be airlifted in by helicopter. Gusts of winds further complicated the situation. By Sunday evening INFOCA was reporting the blaze was controlled. A team of firefighters remained working in the area on Monday to ensure the flames had been completely extinguished. The fire affected more than 31 hectares, mainly scrubland, esparto grass and broom.

Geological gem open to public PULPI’S giant geode opens up for guided tours next week. Groups of 12 will be able to see close up the geological gem located some 60 metres below ground.
The eight metre-long, two metre-high natural phenomenon is covered with enormous gypsum crystals of extraordinary transparency. It is the biggest geode in Europe and the second biggest in the world.

Pedal power connection PLANS to build a cycle track connecting Roquetas de Mar and El Ejido will move forward, according to the Andalucia government Development, Infrastructure and Land Planning minister. Marifran Carazo made the announcement during a visit to Roquetas last week to attend the ceremony to raise the Blue Flag for quality which the port has regained this year. She said the Junta de Andalucia would pick up on the project first discussed by the previous regional administration in early 2017 to create a cycle track running between Almerimar and Roquetas through the Punta Entinas Sabinar Natural Landscape. The track will be “an important infrastructure for mobility and tourism in both municipalities,” commented Roquetas mayor Gabriel Amat.

VOLUNTARY: The suspect handed over the stolen items he had stashed in one of his properties.
Light-fingered ex-employee A LIGHT-FINGERED ex-employee is under arrest after the company boss reported the disappearance of more than €1,700 worth of professional materials from the business’s warehouse to Garrucha Guardia Civil. Missing items included company clothing and communication and security technology. A Guardia investigation into possible suspects who would have had access to the materials led to the detention of MALF from Huercal-Overa. When officers interviewed the 35-year-old he was working for another company. The Guardia said in the face of the contradictions in his statements and the evidence they had against him, he voluntarily handed over the items he had stashed in a second property he owns.
REMAINS of an unidentified large marine mammal washed up on the Villaricos coast, the Equinac marine life rescue association reported. Equinac posted a video of what was left of the creature on social media, commenting they were ‘totally sure’ it was a whale. They could not say for sure what species it was however. A member of the public had noticed the remains and alerted the 112 emergency service, which in turn informed Equinac.

Getting together GETTING different generations of families together and interacting without technology is the central aim of a provincial government initiative which got underway this week. A further goal of the Equality and Family Special Delegation’s Family Games project is to get people active and leading a less sedentary lifestyle. Instead of digital distractions, the idea is for families to play traditional games and spend time in the great outdoors. Presenting details of the initiative, provincial government Equality and Family delegate Car-
men Belen Lopez said the workshops put emphasis on activities which stimulate children’s imaginations, teamwork and good health in which parents and grandparents can take part. She said the project also represented a way of keeping local culture and traditions alive. The Family Games workshops will be offered in 23 municipalities over the summer and autumn, including Lubrin, Maria, Los Gallardos, Antas, Taberno, Albanchez and Pulpi. Among featured games are hopscotch, spinning tops, jacks, skipping and sack races.
IMPROVEMENTS to infrastructure around Vera Playa’s busy Las Buganvillas area have been completed before the start of the peak holiday month, the local council reported. The local authority invested close to €100,000 on road surfaces, pavements, ramps for people with reduced mobility and new street lighting be-

Vera’s Town Planning and Works councillor Belen Carnicer, described the works as “necessary and urgent,” given the “very deteriorated condition” of the surfaces, which she said “represented an important risk for passers-by in the area

The councillor remarked that the completion of the works had been speeded up “in order that residents, visitors and tourists can enjoy the month of August in the area without the inconvenience of major works.”

Final curtain on well-used stage THE Indalo Players has bid a sad, but fond farewell to its stage, although it’s found a good home with Bedar Town Hall. The council will use it as extra staging for festivals. The Players’ Bill White told the Euro Weekly News that some years ago, the group’s then president Otfried Laux came up with the idea of building a stage for the Kimrick in Mojacar Playa that would transform easily to tiered seating with the minimum of fuss. With the design and engineering skills of a good friend of Bill’s they came up with something that did just that. “One of his wonderful ideas was that the whole operation, from stage to seat-

THE WEEK IN POLITICS By Joe Gerrard SPAIN’S acting prime minister will be weighing his options carefully after failing to secure lawmakers’ backing for his return to government. Pedro Sanchez lost both of last week’s investiture votes after the leftist Podemos refused to join a coalition government with the left-leaning Partido Socialista (PSOE). The acting prime minister lost the second and final investiture vote after 155 Congress of Deputies members voted against him. He secured the backing of 124 lawmakers, but Podemos’ abstention deprived him of the numbers needed to win the simple majority, more yeses than nos, required to govern. Acting Deputy Prime Minister Carmen Calvo accused Podemos of demanding ‘virtually the government’ after they asked for control of ministries including Labour, Science and Finance. Podemos’ head of political action Pablo Echenique claimed PSOE intended talks

The countdown has now begun for Sanchez to get Podemos’ support with a new offer or to call a fresh election. Sanchez has until Monday September 23 to hold another investiture vote or call a snap poll. PSOE sources have said the acting prime minister is keep-
ing the door to talks open but the party is also being geared up to fight another election if necessary. Each way forward for Sanchez and PSOE is fraught with complications. Reopening talks with Podemos may lead to greater concessions or it could land the acting prime minister back where he started, without a deal and facing defeat in Congress.
A fresh election would also be a gamble. PSOE is currently polling ahead of its rivals, but the gap between it and the PP is closing (see Poll Tracker). If Sanchez called an election, the PP and Ciudadanos could cast him as the architect of Spain’s political impasse and could win seats at his expense or collectively defeat PSOE. King Felipe is set to meet with party leaders to find a way forward. Although he may encourage the PP and Ciudadanos in particular to try and reach a deal with Sanchez, their political priorities might trump the king’s wishes. PP and Ciudadanos leaders Pablo Casado and Albert Rivera respectively may reason their chances are better going into possible elections in opposition rather than throwing their lot in with PSOE.
Backlog growing POLITICAL deadlock resulting from protracted talks to form a new government is causing state business to pile up, with posts unfilled and long-standing legislative issues stalling. The acting left-leaning Partido Socialista (PSOE) government’s mounting unfinished business includes a budget for this year. The failure of the government’s earlier draft budget, which was effectively vetoed by pro-Catalan independence lawmakers, triggered April’s election. The 2018 budget drawn up by the previous conservative Partido Popular (PP) budget was carried over to this year. But delays to forming a new administration could also affect accounts for 2020. Pension and housing reform are also among the items of unfinished business. The government has yet to iron out details for state housing while pension rises have not been signed off after three years of talks. A handful of high-level government positions also remain unfilled, including the post of Territories Minister which has been vacant since Meritxell Batat became the Congress of Deputies president. Foreign Minister Josep Borrell is also set to take up a new role with the European Commission, raising the prospect of Spain being without a top diplomat. The National Intelligence Centre (CNI) is also without a director.

Ambassador: getting registered ‘vital’ BRITAIN’S ambassador to Spain has told expatriates it is ‘vital’ they and their families are properly registered in an update on Brexit and political developments in Westminster. Simon Manley said Britain’s new Prime Minister Boris Johnson had been ‘absolutely clear’ the country would leave the EU on Thursday October 31, with or without a deal. British nationals need to be registered before that date to ensure they can benefit from measures outlined by the Spanish government covering a nodeal outcome, including on healthcare and residency, Manley added. “It is essential we prepare for the possibility of a no-deal, which is what we’re going to do,” the ambassador said. He added that the Brits in Spain Facebook page hosted a Q&A session on Tuesday. Manley’s comments come as Boris Johnson’s entry into 10 Downing Street ratcheted up the prospect of Britain leaving the EU without a deal. By Joe Gerrard BRITAIN’S government has ratcheted up preparations for a no-deal Brexit since its new prime minister took office little over a week ago, with one minister calling the prospect ‘very real.’ Michael Gove wrote in the Sunday Times that the government was now ‘working on the assumption’ Britain would leave the EU without a deal on Thursday October 31. “We still hope the EU will change their minds, but we must operate on the assumption that they will not. Nodeal is now a very real prospect and we must make sure that we are ready,” Gove wrote. Prime Minister Boris Johnson appointed Gove the new Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster. The role does not traditionally have fixed responsibilities attached to it, but Gove has been tasked to oversee the government’s no-deal planning as part of the position. Gove wrote in his article: “Planning for no-deal is now this govern-

Johnson’s victory in the Conservative leadership contest was always expected to be the harbinger of a hardening Brexit stance from London. But the pace of Johnson’s recali-
brating of the government’s approach has shown he is committed and willing to allow a no-deal. New Chancellor Sajid Javid echoed Johnson and Gove’s line in an interview with British media in which he pledged an at least extra €1 billion for no-deal preparations. The government is also reportedly drawing up a no-deal emergency budget for early October to have ready if necessary.

The groups now have more than 35,000 members in their geographically based groups around Spain warning of fires or adverse weather conditions. Q. You head up an amazing group of Facebook pages - Local Fire and Weather Watch how did that start? A. It was created just a few days after the massive fire near Coin in 2012. The one thing I found during the three days of the fire was that information was flying all over Facebook pages and groups. At one time I had at least 10 tabs open, all with varying degrees of information; some of it correct and some of it pure speculation. That in itself was enough to prompt me into trying to offer a more organised method of reporting factual information. This was then extended to include weather problems, once the floods started in winter. I just felt that a more constructive way of presenting information was called for. Q. What are the objectives of the group? A. To provide factual information from both

CONCERNS: Spain’s air pollution rates continue to grow despite EU pressure.
Air pollution hearing THE European Commission has taken Spain, along with Bulgaria, to the Court of Justice over their lack of steps to limit the amount of air pollution in the country. Spain has reportedly failed to maintain a level of air pollution in the country to below the standards set in a mutual agreement between the country and the EU in 2010. Fellow member states France, Germany, Hungary, Italy, Romania and the United Kingdom were taken to court in 2018 for the same reason, however Spain avoided the ruling as they promised reasonable action within a specific time frame. However these promises were not met and
therefore the court appearance is now the last resort route available. A deciding factor on the decision for legal action is the u-turn in policies for Spain’s capital Madrid. The centre-right mayor of Madrid Jose Luis Martínez-Almeida overturned the zero emissions scheme in the city put in place by the previous mayor. In a statement, Commissioner Karmenu Vella said of Spain’s worrying increase in air pollution: “One year later the evidence of harm from air pollution still continues to grow, there is no more room for excuses. We need to see decisive action.”
New safety scheme for young women hailed a success A NEW scheme pioneered by police at the Santurtzi Festival in northern Spain has been praised for providing young female festival goers a safer experience during the late night festivities. The scheme, a collaboration between the Santurtzi local council and police force, involves a free minibus that will transport the minors to and from the festival under the supervision of security and police personnel. Once the young women have been dropped off at their destination they are monitored
by the accompanying police officer to ensure they get through their door safely. The new scheme comes after a plethora of sex attacks have been reported this year at festivals and ferias across the country. Local culture councillor Danel Bringas said of the project, “the aim is to avoid minors being caught up in dangerous situations, in particular in the case of women who live in remote areas where they could be subjected to threats, propositions, unpleasant insinuations or violent situations.”
The minibus was first used at last year’s Cármenes de Santurtzi festival and was used by a total of 388 young women. One young girl has used the service every night, because, she says, she has to use “streets with no lighting” to get home. “After a certain time of night this all gets crazy,” says the girl. “People don’t know what they are doing and anything could happen to you.” The scheme has now been used by a number of localities across the country and has had similar positive feedback.

By John Smith NATIONAL DAY (Tuesday September 10) in Gibraltar this year will feature a rebranded, family-friendly Monkey Rocks event, headlined by David Guetta. Having sold more than 50 million records worldwide, Guetta is one of the biggest names in music production and has won two Grammy Awards out of his six nominations. The French DJ and producer is no stranger to the south coast of the Iberian Peninsula having played sell-out gigs in Marbella in 2014 and San Pedro Alcantara in 2015. This year’s Monkey Rocks is organised jointly by the Monkey Rocks Festival and the Self Determination for Gibraltar Group. The event will receive funding from HM Government of Gibraltar, which will be allocated specifically to provide additional security and bag searches as a preventative measure against the excessive alcohol consumption and drug use which have been re-
ported at previous events. Monkey Rocks 2019 will be held at the Europa Point Stadium and those attending can expect the style of production, administration and security to be very similar to that of the Gibraltar Calling Festival that will take place the weekend before. For the first time, this year’s event will feature dedicated ‘family-friendly’ seating areas and free tickets for children under 12 will be available with the purchase of an adult ticket. To ensure ease of access and to alleviate the traffic pressure of the event, a free shuttle bus service will be available between the Europa Point Stadium and the town centre. Doors are expected to open at 3pm and the first acts are expected to begin at 4pm, whilst further artist announcements will be made shortly. Tickets cost £65 for seating areas and £45 for general entry and are now available at www.buytickets.gi, whilst paper free tickets for children 12 years and under will be available in due course.

Migrant children robbed in Ceuta THE National Police of Ceuta has arrested six people accused of assaulting, threatening and robbing young migrants who survive in the port area or sleep in hostels. Three adults arrested were detained, while the other three investigated who are under 18 have been summoned
by the Prosecutor’s Office for Minors. “We are in the process of investigation to confirm or not their participation in the events of which we have been aware during the last month. There have been five or six incidents where threats, assaults and robberies with vio-
lence were made on minors living in the port or immigrants centre,” said Chief of Police, Commissioner Andres Martin Garrido. The police are seeing if the cases are linked, although they say they do not think these were hate crimes.
Tenerife rape arrest REPORTS are surfacing of an arrest of a 43-year-old man of Moroccan nationality being arrested in the Playa de las Americas area of Tenerife. The arrest was made after a video apparently showing the attempted sex attack near the Las Veronicas nightclub was handed into police on the island. The victim is a 17-yearold British girl who was on holiday at the time. Police have not revealed any more details of the event, but the reports come in after two holidaymakers were allegedly attacked on Playa de Palma beach in Mallorca.

Spain’s Junior Eurovision entry chosen TWELVE-YEAR-OLD Valencian Melani Garcia has been chosen to represent Spain in the upcoming Eurovision Junior contest. Garcia was tearful as she was told the news during an interview with presenter Julia Varela, on La 1’s morning television show As of Today. “Going to Eurovision is a thing I’ve always dreamed of since I was little. I can’t
believe it,” Melani said. She will travel to Gliwice (Poland) on November 24 to compete in the contest, the first time Spain has been represented for 13 years. Garcia is no stranger to the spotlight, she was recently crowned champion of TV talent show La Voz Kids on Telecinco in 2018 with an outstanding performance of ‘Nessun Dorma.’
Strikes stop trains MORE than 700 trains were cancelled across Spain yesterday (Wednesday) due to strikes. The state-backed Renfe rail company had to cancel 707 services after the CGT called on workers to walk out over demands to cut hours. A total of 230 services cancelled were AVE trains while the remaining 477 were medium distance. A total of 78 per cent of yesterday’s AVE and 65 per cent of medium distance services ran as normal, according to Renfe.

Teen allegedly raped A 19-YEAR-OLD British woman has allegedly been raped in a luxury Marbella hotel. Police have arrested a British man, who has since been released on bail. It is thought the victim and a friend had been out for the night when they met two men and they all went back to a room. It is alleged that when the young woman went to the bathroom, a man followed her,
closed the door then sexual assaulted her. It has been reported that the woman then went to a health centre and explained what had happened, saying she was too drunk to have cried out for help. Police were called in who launched an investigation. They identified a suspect who has been released with charges and is under investigation for an alleged crime of sexual assault.

I spoke to and interviewed several expatriates for stories. I was able to hone the skills I was taught at university while being able to view Spain, my new home, from a unique vantage point. I was also able to bring my skills to bear on one of my pet subjects, politics. I was fortunate to be reporting when history was made with the first successful no-confidence motion against a sitting Spanish government, which I covered. About a year ago I was giv-
en responsibility for the Costa del Sol edition of Euro Weekly News, one of the company’s biggest titles. Around the same time Euro Weekly News owner Michel Euesden offered me space to cover Spanish politics and Brexit. In my first job I was given the chance to choose stories, chose my own angle and report on my own terms, a generous vote of confidence in me. Barcelona floods STORMS and heavy rain left streets in Barcelona flooded last Saturday, July 27. Barcelona City Council had to activate e m e rg e n c y m e a s u r e s f o r s t o r m s a f t e r heavy rains struck at around midday. The rains lasted for about 30 minutes but local meteorologists said some 47 litres per square metre struck the area in
that time. A total of 26 flights from Barcelona-El Prat airport were cancelled because of the weather, according to reports. Emergency services received several hundred warnings concerning damage resulting from the storms. Some buildings and metro stations were also flooded.

Donating blood in Spain LIVING in Spain can bring with it an array of issues which may not have been encountered when living in the UK. Despite their autonomous operations management, every regional service is fully incorporated into a unique and common Public National Health System, supplying a cohesive blood transfusion care to all citizens, residents, and visitors in Spain based on 100 per cent voluntary and non-remunerated blood donation. For more general information, visit www.msps.es. Anyone who has lived continuously in the UK between 1980 and 1996 (a minimum of one year) will not be able to donate blood in Spain due to the risk of transmitting mad cow disease. Similarly, there are restrictions if you have received a blood transfer in the UK. However, each region may have different rules about donation. Call the donation helpline on 935 573 500. Alternatively, visit www.donorsang.gencat.cat to find out if you are eligible. If you are eligible, you can give blood at your local hospital, or via the Spanish Red Cross (Cruz Roja) at one of their clinics, or in one of their mobile units. You can check dates and locations by visiting www.donarsangre.org. A donor card is not necessary to give blood. On the first visit you will have to provide DNI, NIE, passport or a driving licence. If you are already registered in the Blood Bank, you only need a donor card or a document with your name and surname. The process of blood donation takes just 10 minutes in which 450 ml are collected (equating to 10 per cent of the total blood circulation of an adult person). Despite huge technological advances, the only way for hospitals to obtain blood is through the generosity of the public. The blood is carefully screened for disease to make sure it is safe. After a tattoo, you must wait four months to be eligible to donate. After surgery, the exclusion period will depend on the type of intervention. After minor surgical procedures, you cannot donate blood for seven days or until you are fully recovered. After undergoing major surgery, you will not be able to donate blood for four months. The rarest blood type is AB, present in 1 per cent of Caucasians, according to research by the America Red Cross. Blood transfusions are carried out daily in Spanish hospitals with more than 6,200 patients being given them, of whom almost a quarter are fighting cancer and a similar figure receiving transfusions during or after surgery. Doctors warn against ‘intimate’ ways to cool down DOCTORS in Britain have warned women of a new trend that is apparently sweeping the nation to help cool down during the sweltering temperatures currently engulfing Europe. Apparently the new thing is to put ice lollies into their intimate areas to lower their body temperature! Dr Sarah Welsh of Cambridge University Hospital has specifically warned of the dangers of doing this to the health of their private parts. As if people needed reminding, the main
reason against practising this is that inserting food items into the vagina introduces microbes and bacteria into the body which can cause infections and damage the natural ph levels. The ice can also attach to the delicate skin inside the woman’s body and can cause real trauma. Dr Welsh advises that people should take more traditional measures to beat the heat such as, taking cool showers, staying hydrated and keeping your home cool.
European medics’ bacteria fears THE evolution of bacteria that are resistant to antibiotics is a worry for a large portion of the world, especially Europe which is reportedly facing a potential pandemic as a strain of the bacterium Klebsiella Pneu-
moniae has killed thousands of people over the past decade. Over 2,000 patients who contracted Klebsiella Pneumoniae were studied and according to the Spanish researchers’ results
‘False’ rape claims CYPRIOT police officers have arrested a 19-year-old British woman in connection with alleged false rape claims at the Ayia Napa resort town. Investigators said 12 Israelis arrested over the allegations have now been released. All the detainees denied the allegations. Police spokesperson Christos Andreou said the 19-yearold would appear in court this week. Britain’s Foreign Office has confirmed it has assisted a woman and her family after the arrest.

Husband’s prison meeting call A BRITISH woman’s husband has called on the prime minister to meet him after his partner’s jailing in Iran on spying charges which she denies. Nazanin Zaghari-Ratcliffe’s husband Richard said he needed to speak with Boris Johnson to show the new prime minister could ‘keep his promises.’ Radcliffe told British media: “We were looking to you to be Nazanin’s hero and you promised us things that didn’t happen.
Ratcliffe’s comments follow his wife’s arrest in Iran on spying charges in April 2016. Zaghari-Ratcliffe, who worked for the Reuters news agency, was on holiday there. Johnson incorrectly told a parliamentary committee while serving as Foreign Secretary that the 40-year-old travelled to Iran to ‘teach journalism.’ Tehran’s Prosecutor General claimed she was recruiting people to spread anti-Iranian propaganda.

THE Spanish government will take into account economic developments including market movements, consumption data and purchasing power when deciding on future minimum wage rises, a government official has said. Secretary of State for Economy and Business Support Ana de la Cueva said the government needed to take decisions on the rate ‘prudently.’ It comes as the government plans to increase the minimum wage to €900 a month. Previous efforts to raise it to €1,200 failed to pass along with the rest of last year’s draft budget.

Firms reveal half-year profits PUBLICLY-LISTED companies in Spain have published their earnings for the first six months of this year, with many recording year-on-year falls. Firms in the banking sector reported mixed results. CaixaBank made €622 million in net profits, beating the €510 million analysts forecast in July, but still earning 52.1 per cent less year-on-year. The company said staff restructuring which incurred one-off costs of €978 million gross hit their earnings. Sabadell made net profits of €532 million, an increase of almost 341 per cent compared to the first half of

In the finance sector more broadly, insurance company Mapfre made €374 million, 2.9 per cent less than last year. Company Finance Director Fernando Mata said Mapfre chose not to take advantage of capital gains on its fixed income portfolio because of a drop in interest rates. In the telecommunications sector Vodafone made more than €1 billion, a 10.3 per cent drop on last
year’s figures. Company sources said its decision not to offer promotions was undermined when its rivals chose not to follow suit. Basque operator Euskaltel made €22.9 million, 20.5 per cent less than in the same period in 2018. Losses came despite 4,000 new customers signing up for their services, company sources said. In manufacturing, the Acerinox steel maker earned €69 million, 50 per cent less than in the first half of 2018. The firm had to grapple with ‘very competitive’ market conditions, it said.
SPAIN’S corporate law regime is better than many of the world’s economies for small businesses but regional improvements are needed, the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) has said. The OECD’s SME and Entrepreneurship Outlook 2019 report stated Spanish law was god when it came to getting companies access to financing. But access to public procurement and the cost of infrastructure, much of which is the responsibility of autonomous communities, let the country down. Small companies’ lack of access to skilled workers also needed improvement, the OECD found.

Purchase go ahead THE European Commission has given the go ahead for US investment firm Carlyle to buy a stake of between 30 and 40 per cent in the Cespa petroleum company for at least €4.2 billion.
Savings push LOSSES: Nissan is axing 12,500 jobs.
Nissan job cuts SPANISH workers at Japanese car maker Nissan’s plants are set to be the first to go in company plans to axe some 12,500 jobs worldwide. Nissan said some 600 workers at plants in Cataluña would retire early while 150 have already left the company voluntarily. Nissan plans to reduce staff numbers in two phases. Some 6,400 workers will have left by the end of this year while 6,100 will go in 2022 and 2023. The car marker is scaling back production by 10 per cent up to 2022. Nissan’s second quarter net profits were €53.1 million, a fall of 94.5 per cent year-on-year.
TELEFONICA telecommunications company president Jose Maria Alvarez-Pallete has told analysts that cutting costs to improve its balance sheet remains the ‘priority’ after firm figures showed it had reduced its debt liabilities for the ninth consecutive quarter.
Bond offer OIL company Repsol has issued €750 million in bonds over the next eight years which is being handled by banks including CaixaBank, Santander, Citigroup, Natixis, Goldman Sachs, HSBC, Morgan Stanley, JP Morgan and UniCredit.
Company worker spending survey THE average Spanish worker earned about €23,003 before tax last year, according to a survey from the National Institute of Statistics (INE) on worker costs to businesses. The INE’s Annual Labour Cost Survey found annual gross salaries increased by an average of 0.9 per cent compared to 2017 levels. It found the average worker costs firms around €30,883 a year after deductions of about
€202 from administrations to promote jobs and training are taken into account. The net annual cost of the average worker in 2018 was 1.1 per cent higher than the previous year, INE figures found. The survey found almost €412 is spent on welfare contributions per worker per year. Work expenses accounted for almost €209 a year, with €192 spent on severances and €82 on training.

Euro EUR/GBP: Unmoved at £0.89 EUR/USD: Down from $1.13 to $1.11 The euro (EUR) spent much of July with mixed movement, as its rival the US dollar (USD) recovered and the shared currency outlook became increasingly gloomy due to concerns about the eurozone’s economy. Eurozone economic activity, especially in the manufacturing sector and especially in Germany, has been showing signs of prolonged weakness and slowdown. Hopes for the eurozone economy to be rebounding from the slowdown seen earlier in the year have largely faded. Due to these lasting economic fears, markets have become more convinced that the European Central Bank (ECB) will ease monetary policy before the end of the year. The ECB signalled as much in its

policy decision this week. However, ECB President Mario Draghi kept markets from getting too jittery, as he was less gloomy about the economy than many had suspected. Still, investors will keep a close eye on eurozone data over the coming month, as it may indicate what
stimulus measures the ECB will adopt when it meets in September. Pound GBP/EUR: Unmoved at €1.12 GBP/USD: Down from $1.27 to $1.24 Once again among the worst-performing major currencies, the pound (GBP) continued to be throt-
tled over the past month, by fears that a no-deal Brexit was becoming an increasingly plausible outcome to the long Brexit process. As expected, hard Brexit advocate Boris Johnson won the Conservative Party leadership contest by a wide margin and became Britain’s new Prime Minister. Many fellow ‘Brexiteers’ have been selected for Johnson’s government cabinet, making economists anxious that a worst-case scenario no-deal Brexit will indeed be more likely. Brexit fears have only been part of the pound’s reason for weakness, as recent UK data continues to show signs of economic activity being weakened by uncertainty. This has caused Bank of England (BoE) interest rate cut speculation to rise as well. UK politics and the Brexit plans of the Johnson government are like-
ly to remain in focus for the pound. US Dollar USD/GBP: Up from £0.78 to £0.80 USD/EUR: Up from €0.87 to €0.89 Following brief periods of weakness in June, the US dollar (USD) has been able to benefit from broad weakness in both the pound (GBP) and euro (EUR) to put in solid gains for much of July. While Federal Reserve interest rate cut bets have risen significantly, with analysts expecting multiple US interest rate cuts over the next year, weakness in US dollar rivals has prevented the currency from suffering too much. Of course, with the Federal Reserve’s July policy decision due to take place next week, the US dollar could be in for big movement in the coming weeks depending on the action and tone the bank takes.

Bank hiring row goes on SANTANDER has accused a prospective CEO of engaging in unethical behaviour by recording conversations between himself and senior company staff. The bank claimed Andrea Orcel, who was set to be Santander’s new CEO until it withdrew the offer, recorded conversations during the final phase of negotiations for the position. Bank president Ana Botin said a final contract for the role, which carried a salary of €17 million, ‘never materialised.’ His recording of conversations showed ‘dubious ethical and moral qualities’ which were not befitting the CEO of a bank, the president added. It comes after Orcel threatened to take Santander to court claiming they rescinded on their offer leaving him jobless. He is seeking more than €100 million in compensation from the bank. Botin said Orcel’s hiring process was conducted in good faith and carried out according to ‘solid’ corporate governance standards. Orcel is attempting to pin his case on an offer letter he signed for the company. But Botin said the letter had no legal validity.
Pension cost rise THE Spanish state spent almost €9.7 billion a month on pension payments from the start of July, an increase of more than 7 per cent year-on-year government figures show. Data from the Labour Ministry showed the amount allocated to pension spending represented a new record. It comes as the number of pensioners grew by 1.2 per cent from July 2018 to this year, reaching more than 9.7 million. July is the 42nd consecutive month in which pension costs have risen. The average retirement pension was around €1,138 a month as of July 1, almost 5 per cent higher than the previous year. The average general pension was about €991 a month when payouts for permanent disabilities, widowhood and orphans are taken into account. Retirement pensions account for almost two thirds of the more than 9.7 million total at more than six million. Almost 2.4 million widows’ pensions are paid out, more than 959,220 go to recipients with permanent disabilities, while more than 341,330 go to orphans. Government figures showed eight regions spent more on pensions than the national average. The top spenders were

Bank to avoid negative rate CAIXABANK has said it will not apply negative interest rates to private deposits despite ‘strong pressure’ on the company to bring them in from the current economic situation, CEO Gonzalo Gortazar said.
Railway cash THE Spanish government has earmarked €95.8 million for maintenance projects across its non-high speed rail network for the next three years, with works due to fix signalling, detection systems and other devices. INCREASE: The Spanish state is spending more on pensions. the Basque Country with more than €1,230 a month, Asturias with almost €1,170 and the Madrid Region with more than €1,160. Extremadura, Galicia and Murcia all spend less than the national average with around €826, more than €841 and more than €873 respectively. Pensions continue to be a contentious issue for the Spanish government and
retirees. Proposed increases of fractions of a percent from the previous conservative Partido Popular (PP) government sparked mass demonstrations across the country. Pension costs continue to climb as Spain’s population ages, meaning more people will receive payouts, but there will be fewer taxpayers supporting the system.
Firms probe THE National Commission for Markets and Securities (CNMC) has launched an investigation into 13 companies which operate Spain’s highway network over allegations they engaged in anti-competitve practices, including forming cartels and collusion to distribute contracts among themselves.

LEAPY LEE SAYS IT OTHERS THINK IT WHAT a weekend that was. Not only did I watch with glee and satisfaction, reruns of the destruction of Corbyn’s bunch of seedy, glum faced and utterly miserable losers, by a buoyant Boris and a rib-tickling Rees Mogg - who managed to put forth arguments and positive ideas to the House in a language that the opposition couldn’t even understand, leave alone find credible answers for (Diana Abbott is still Googling up most of the words as we speak!), but I also discovered I had won yet another £15 million in a lottery; a game of chance that I have no recollection of, but is nevertheless kindly being held for me by the American Ambassador to Nigeria who wants to arrange a meet to hand it over. He will be arriving in the UK next week and has requested I send my address and phone number, so he can ‘deliver the package in person!’ Before I do that, I must urgently (‘before time will be against us’) send $280 to the cargo registration officer, a Mr Nwabundo Iscanyi Benjami in Lagos Nigeria. The letter is actually signed by Ambassador W Stuart Symington himself, so it is obviously genuine and subsequently this column will unfortunately be my final offering as I could, by the time it is published be off on a well-de-

A weekend of highlights
CROMER PIER: Quintessentially British. served golfing trip to Honolulu! To complete my weekend, I actually found myself the recipient of gale force winds at the end of Cromer pier! I know, I know, what a rich and abundantly varied life he must lead I hear you say. Well, in
fact, that is precisely how it panned out this weekend. After attending yet another tedious, but necessary specialist appointment in the UK (Don’t worry folks there’s life in the old canine yet!), I took up the kind invitation of some old friends to join them in a couple of days of frol-
ics in the depths of the beautiful Norfolk countryside. One of the weekend highlights was the summer variety show on the historic and quintessentially British, Cromer pier. Picked up by a coach (what else!) with the delightful title of ‘Marriots Chariots’ prominently displayed on its side, the highly skillful ‘charioteer’ wove us through the meandering byways and hedgerow flanked ‘low ways,’ till we soon found our selves savouring the sight of the crashing waves and slate grey briny of our Cromer seaside destination. Naturally, in true British tradition, the crippling Sahara record- breaking conditions had changed overnight and the wind, although not cold, was whistling across the bay, whipping up the surf and, once again in true British fashion, completely undeterring a whole family of swimmers and surfers frolicking happily on the stony grey and swirling foreshore. The end of the pier show was utterly delightful with all the rich British content and humour one would expect from this most local of traditions. Surrounded exclusively by the accents of dear old GB and even regaled at one stage by the National Anthem, my pint glass positively overflowed. A million thanks to all concerned. AT this time of year, air travel’s uppermost in many people’s minds. Not always a pleasant experience what with queuing, flight delays, threats of strikes etc. But let’s look at another problem: reclining seats in economy class. You know, when the guy in front must have loosened an extra bolt in the seat base - because he’s effectively in your lap. And bang! There go your laptop, drinks and food! On long haul, ideally you should only be able to recline seats an hour or so after the main meal has been served. Problem sorted! But if there is a problem, why not speak out (politely) rather than sulking and taking a picture for social media - which everyone seems to do nowadays? But symptomatic of the ‘snowflake generation’ that seems to say to itself: I have a problem, but rather than fix it I’ll post a bunch of messages declaring how ****** off I am, hoping that the silent indignation and smiley faces will somehow make it all go away... Flying used to be fun, but I’m talking about the ‘80s and even earlier. Since then, flying’s become increasingly punishing as the seat cushions in cattle class have become thinner

The old foes could safely ignore their successors’ red lines because Gonzalez has never come out as a full-fat Sanchista, while Aznar hinted that he believes Pablo Casado’s PP should abstain and enable Sanchez to govern. It almost fooled those who were around at the height of Gonzalez-Aznar enmity into sighing for the good old days. Those days never existed and Gon-

A better system for proxies Some years ago, our Community of Property Owners had the same problem regarding proxy votes as your earlier questioner. When residents realised that their wishes were not necessarily carried out by the proxy holder, discontent arose. When I became president, I instructed our administrators to include all Agenda items on the proxy form. Voters could then put a tick against each item to vote Yes/No/Abstain. This ensures that their wishes are respected. This system is normal practice among large corporations for their AGM, particularly for electing committee/board members. With martyred altruism Iglesias said before the failed Investiture debate that he would forego the vice-presidency that was his due. He knew the bargain he still intended to drive would scupper any chance of a coalition on Sanchez’s terms and prevent his return to the Moncloa. Iglesias did so while preaching democracy but not practising it. Worse in his own way than Abascal because the Podemos supremo is both a hypocrite and a bigot.
A right old twoand-eight OH, the gloating! Oh, the pleasure on the faces of Pablo Casado and Albert Rivera when Iglesias gave an encore of his 2016 party trick and prevented Pedro Sanchez from becoming president last week. The Right might be at sixes and sevens, but it’s nothing compared to the Left’s two-and-eight.

Visuel CONSULAR MATTERS THE presentation given by a group of Danish artists called VISUEL is a special occasion, but if this presentation also takes place in one of the most special towns on the coast, such as Nerja, my consular duty is transformed into a personal pleasure, a welcome relief from running my firm on the Costa Del Sol. Starting on July 18, 2019 the work of a dozen Danish artists has been exhibiting in the Nerja Museum under the title of ‘Underground’ in triptych format. The title of the exhibition was very appropriate for two reasons, firstly the artists drew from the deepest of their souls and this is reflected in their different artistic ex-
pressions. Secondly the exhibition is in the room that is located in the basement of the Nerja Museum, which makes the works more intimate and closer. When Caroline Krabbe, one of the artists of the exhibition, asked me to give a speech at the exhibition’s opening ceremony, I rearranged my schedule as this was an event that I wanted to attend and be part of the moment. A summer night in Nerja and enjoying art is one of the most attractive offers I receive as Trade Delegate for Andalucia and Extremadura. Caroline belongs to a family of reputed Danish artists who have been based for many years in Frigiliana. She belongs to a family that combines in a wise and discreet way two creative universes, the Danish and the south of Spain. Caroline managed for many years probably the only art gallery

If he is guilty, bang him up and throw the key away instead of repeating the pittance of a sentence he got in 2008. I got a letter from my insurance company the other day informing me that I had got a speeding fine. It said: ‘We are contacting you because we have located the publication of a notice related to the vehicle registration number xxxxxxx.’ The information in this notification is as follows: and it then goes on to tell when and where and how much the fine was. I ‘phoned them and asked how they knew about it before I did. They told me that these notices go into this publication if Trafico do not get a response from the second letter they send to the owner of the vehicle.
Well you know where this is going. I never got a second letter. In fact, I never got a first letter. I find this strange because there is someone on our gate 24/7 and Correos know that even if he’s away for a few minutes, they only have to wait a short time. I don’t believe I was sent anything. The person on the ‘phone informed me that this is not unusual. I was fortunate. I paid it straight away and managed to get the maximum discount on my fine. Now not every company gives this service, so I was lucky. I was relating this story to my mate and he told me a horror story about how he had a fine that he never knew anything about and he finished up with a horrendous fine. The first thing he knew about it was when his bank account was embargoed and even though he protested, they were not interested and insisted that the letters had been sent. I have had similar experiences here with letters from the town hall or other official places where it’s something to do with a payment. I mean, they would never tell porkies about these letters just to get a bit of extra dosh would they? Or would they? Let me know if you have had any experiences of fine letters going missing.

OUR VIEW Good plan, bad cause A BUS and police escort service put on for young women attending a festival in the Basque Country is welcome, but also a damning indictment on Spain’s gender violence issue. Santurtzi Council and the Biscay Province town’s Local Police joined forces to bus young women in and out of the Carmenes de Santurtzi fiesta. Santurtzi Council culture spokesperson Danel Bringas said it aimed to avoid young women being targeted by ‘threats, propositions, unpleasant insinuations or violent situations.’ One comment from a user was chillingly telling. She said: “After a certain time of night this all gets crazy. Anything could happen to you.” The last part underlines how pervasive the dangers facing women are in Spain. The beast of machismo, or gender violence culture, continues to prey on women and its appetite for victims appears boundless. Recent government figures show 35 women died in proven or alleged gender violence cases so far this year, the third worst figure in a decade. More than 1,000 have died since records began in 2003. Santurtzi’s scheme and others are welcome, but all they do is treat the symptoms and not the problem. Educating young men out of sexist and violent mindsets and treating addictions would go a long way. But ultimately society must be radically altered and the economy transformed to stop it manufacturing the poverty which spawns so much of the causes of the gender violence scourge.

Being honest will bring you peace JORIS PLU HONESTY. We can write hundreds of books about this one single word. We all want honesty, to be honest ourselves or other people to be honest with us. But on the other hand it frightens us a lot. Because pure honesty is right in your face. It is about how people feel. How they see things. And then just say it. No filter. Honesty can hurt. A lot. It can also heal. Make one feel free. At peace. John Lennon once said ‘Being honest may not get you many friends, but it will always get you the right ones.’ And he was a man who loved peace in his life. For him, for the whole world.
Of course, honesty is also something very personal. We all see and feel things differently, we have different backgrounds. So being honest can be very tricky. As long as we are respectful to others and speak with integrity, not having the intention to hurt someone, I believe
that being honest is the best thing we can do. Ever. What do you think? Not easy at all. Since we know or sometimes even do not know how the other person will react. So therefore, we are most of the times not really honest, or just a little

Having cellulite can be dependent on lifestyle. Being active with a healthy diet can have a significant effect on how visible your cellulite is or whether you have it at all. A highly stressful lifestyle has also been shown to increase the compounds associated with the development of cellulite, whereas exercising regularly and eating healthily can help to make cellulite less noticeable and even prevent it. It is said that nothing will get rid of cellulite, but a healthy diet, staying hydrated, avoiding stress and exercise will reduce the appearance of this problem. Here are some other ideas, which have been suggested as helping people to get rid of
cellulite: Mix three to four tablespoons of ground seaweed with 50ml of sea salt and extra-virgin olive oil or any essential oil. Massage the mixture on the affected area for 10 minutes before taking a shower. Massage the affected area daily for effective results. Apparently seaweed enhances the texture of the skin and rids the body of toxins. When the body is flushed of toxins, the cellulite is reduced.
Alternative massages of apple cider vinegar or juniper oil have also been put forward. Give up smoking. The smoke inhibits the body from making collagen and a lack of this can make the appearance of cellulite more prominent. Dry brushing your skin for five minutes, every day is said to improve your blood circulation and eliminate toxins from your body. They suggest this helps reduce cellulite.

Moments with life TASTY TART: A simple way to make a delicious lunchtime treat.
THIS is one of the easiest ways to make a tart. You can use different types of pastry. You can make the pastry yourself. Or, even easier, you pop to the supermarket and buy ready made which was what I used for this version, as time was running a little tight here at Olive Tree Farm. There is a multitude of fillings you can choose from. I went for something similar to a pizza, but didn’t add any meat, so for a vegetarian this would be perfect. Just choose which vegetables you fancy and have a play! • Ingredients One sheet of pastry - I used butter puff pastry, but shortcrust also works One ball of Mozzarella cheese sliced into about eight or so pieces Tomato frito 2 fresh tomatoes thinly sliced 2 large mushrooms thinly sliced Half a red onion sliced or roughly chopped (red onions add a nice colour)
OLIVE TREE FARM was set up about four years ago with the intention of achieving a level of self sufficiency. We have poultry for meat and eggs, goats for milk, rabbits and small pigs for meat and harvest our 70 olive trees each year for oil. We also grow a variety of fruits and vegetables.
Dried mixed herbs Salt and black pepper • Method Pre-heat your oven to 200ºC If your pastry sheet is square, trim off the corners to make it round. Place baking parchment on a baking tray and place your pastry
on it. Place a small plate in the centre of your pastry and press gently to mark the area to fill leaving about one and half inches around the outside edge. Spread your tomato frito inside the circle and then layer your chosen veg and cheese finishing with veg on the top. Now carefully fold the bare edges of pastry around the filling, pleating as you go along to form a pretty edge. Add a twist or two of salt and pepper and sprinkle the dried herbs over the whole thing, pastry inc l u d e d . Yo u c a n b r u s h t h e b a r e pastry edges once pleated with a beaten egg to add more colour, before you add salt pepper and herbs, although I didn’t on this occasion. Bake for about 20 - 25 minutes in the centre of your oven until the pastry is cooked through and golden. A n d t h a t ’s i t ! A s i m p l e w a y t o make a delicious lunchtime treat. Enjoy!

Seniors’ centre set for year-end opening A NEW centre for senior citizens in Albox is set to open its doors around the end of this year, municipal mayor Francisco Torrecillas has revealed. The local authority head made the announcement at the recent Grandparents’ Day dinner staged in Albox town’s Plaza Mayor. Torrecillas said the centre in the old trade union building in Calle Ramon y Cajal would be equipped with features especially adapted to the needs of pensioners. Some 400 local senior citizens attended the special dinner, which had been organised by Albox Council in collaboration with the provincial government. Pensioners cardholders enjoyed a threecourse meal for just €5, along with entertainment provided by copla singers Jose ‘El Cuchilla,’ Maria Porcel and Felix Bravo, and the Compañia Yasmina oriental dancers.

Benefits for economic sector IMPROVEMENTS to infrastructure on the Cantoria industrial estate will benefit employees in 49 warehouses and their customers, according to provincial Development deputy Oscar Liria. Speedy work on access road A NEW access road running from the A334 to the Olula del Rio culture centre and the Huitar Menor area is now open to traffic. The Andalucia regional government’s Development department contributed more than €47,000 to the cost of the works, which were completed in just two months. Junta de Andalucia delegate in Almeria, Maribel Sanchez, was among the provincial and local politicians and members of the business community who gathered for last week’s inauguration of the infrastructure,
known as the ‘Redia del Almanzora.’ The delegate said the access road alleviated traffic problems and improved safety. She also praised the Almeria Development and Infrastructure territorial delegation for getting the job done quickly. Olula del Rio mayor Antonio Martinez Pascual remarked that local residents had been calling for the construction of the access road for 14 years, also thanking the Junta de Andalucia for its speed. He said the road benefited not only Huitar residents, but also visitors to the Casa Ibañez Museum.
Delinquent detained for moped theft GUARDIA CIVIL arrested a 19-year-old from Macael on suspicion of stealing a moped from Purchena after breaking the security chain and padlock. The moped owner reported they had left the moped wellsecured, but found it gone when they went to use it. There was no trace of the thief. During investigations into the theft it emerged a well-known delinquent had been seen riding a moped matching the description of the stolen vehicle on roads close to Olula del Rio. Officers located and identified JAGM on the outskirts of the municipality. The Guardia reported the 19-year old confessed to taking the moped and said he had hidden it. Officers found the moped among bushes. It was missing the front part and licence plate. It also no longer started.

To help deliver a sporty character, power is delivered through the rear wheels, which also enables a greater steering articulation for the front wheels. As a result, the turning radius is approximately 4.3 metres, ensuring the Honda e is exceptionally manoeuvrable in small city streets. The Honda e will also offer Single Pedal Control, enabling the driver to accelerate and slow the car using only the accelerator pedal. When the accelerator pedal is depressed the car will accelerate as normal; when it is released, automatic regenerative braking will occur and will slow the car. The production version of the Honda e will be unveiled later this year and customers can make a reservation for priority ordering online in UK, Germany, France and Norway or register their interest in other European markets on the Honda national websites.

ROAD TEST by Nick Fletcher THE T-Cross is Volkswagen’s latest and smallest SUV model, a compact fiveseater with class-leading interior space, many safety and driver-assist features as standard and destined to make quite an impact in the crowded SUV sector. There are two 1.0 litre turbo petrol engines available, offering 94 hp and 113 hp and all models are two-wheel drive with a choice of manual or auto transmission. There are four trim levels and prices start at €18,967 (£16,995). Volkswagen says the TCross is ‘urban friendly’ and majors on practicality and convenience without sacrificing style, a point well made as I found during my week-long test drive. The T-Cross has elegant styling and its size will seem to many people to be ideal it’s not as bulky as many SUV models, yet is still surprisingly roomy. Boot space is 385 litres but it can be expanded to 455 litres by just

seconds. Average fuel economy is 17 kpl (48.2 mpg) and emissions are modest at 112 g/km. I found it quiet and responsive to drive, with accurate steering, supple ride quality and assured handling. It provided the sort of smooth easy feel that makes everyday driving a real pleasure. Standard kit includes sat-nav, connectivity including smartphone mirroring, roof rails, dual-zone climate control, LED headlights with auto adjustment, adaptive cruise control and a raft of safety features including city emergency braking, predictive pedestrian protection, front and rear parking sensors and a driver alert system. The compact SUV sector is hard-fought, but the TCross ticks so many boxes when it comes to everyday family requirements, it seems certain to become a big seller.

COMEBACK: Lorenzo has inked in Silverstone.
Lorenzo’s British date JORGE LORENZO is planning on making his MotoGP comeback at Silverstone for the British GP on August 25. Jorge Lorenzo and the Repsol Honda Team have agreed it is best for Lorenzo to miss both the Czech and Austrian rounds to continue his recovery and avoid any further risk of injury.
He suffered fractures to two of his vertebrae during the Dutch GP. Having spent the summer break working on his recovery, Lorenzo’s condition has improved but he is still in some pain and his movement on a bike remains restricted. Silverstone has been set as his new objective for returning to
riding for the Repsol Honda Team. In his place, Stefan Bradl will again ride the RC213V in Repsol Honda Team colours. The German had been scheduled to wildcard at the Czech GP, but will now fill in for Lorenzo as he did at the Sachsenring.

H o w e v e r, H a m i l t o n stretched his record of scoring points in every race to 23 when he was promoted two spots after the finish thanks to both Alfa Romeos being handed time penalties for starting line clutch irregularities. This also meant Robert Kubica being promoted to 10th to give Williams their first point of the 2019 campaign. Raikkonen and Giovinazzi crossed the line seventh and eighth res p e c t i v e l y, g i v i n g A l f a Romeo their best result of the season. However, soon after the race, the stewards summoned a team representative to discuss an alleged breach of Article 27.1, related to clutch torque application during race starts. The stewards found the torque in the clutch at the start did not match the torque demand as the driver re-
leased the clutch within the specified 70 millisecond maximum period. This time was measured at approximately 300 milliseconds. They compared this breach to that of a false start with a potential advantage and therefore opted to give both drivers a 10-second stop-and-go penalty, which equates to 30 seconds added to each of their race times. Responding to the stewards’ verdict, Alfa Romeo Te a m P r i n c i p a l F r e d e r i c Va s s e u r s a i d : “ I t i s e x tremely disappointing to have both cars penalised and pushed out of the points in what had been such an exciting race. The situation arose during the laps we spent behind the Safety Car ahead of the standing start: we suffered a dysfunction of the clutch that was beyond our control and we will further investigate the issue. S t a r t i n g s e c o n d , Ve r stappen and Red Bull mastered the strategy, taking a gamble to switch to mediums first, then realis-
ing their mistake and diving back into the pits. The Dutchman pitted five times in total, but made the right calls at the right time to emerge at the head of the field. Ve t t e l m a d e u p s e v e n places in the last 15 laps to cap a marvellous comeback, after starting dead last having not set a time in qualifying. Lance Stroll briefly led the race in the final stint, after Racing Point rolled the dice and put him on dry tyres. The move proved inspired and while h e b a t t l e d b r a v e l y, h e eventually succumbed to K v y a t a n d Ve t t e l t o t a k e fourth, ahead of M c L a r e n ’s C a r l o s S a i n z , who at one stage was as low as 14th. The Spanish driver said: “Quite an intense Sunday and a good day for Formula 1. On my side, I’m very happy with that P5. Obviously the podium opportunity was there and now i t ’s e a s y t o s a y w e could’ve made it, but when we were P5 under t h e S a f e t y C a r, i t w a s a very tough call to pit for slicks and nobody around me was stopping. “We decided not to and the guys who were further b e h i n d h a d m o r e m a rg i n to take that risk. In general we made the right decisions at the right time. Clever race and well-managed under stressful conditions, so congratulations to the team.”
