A 19-YEAR-OLD woman from Mar del Plata died after swallowing an ecstasy tablet believed to laced with rat poison at an electronic music festival in the resort. The victim has been named by local authorities as Milagros Alanis Moyano. She was attending the Origen Festival in the Son Fusteret area of the resort with her twin sister Lourdes. According to local media sources she was taken ill on Sunday, July 14, on the night of the festival and was rushed to the Hospital Son Espases on the island. Two days later she was transferred to a clinic hospital in Barcelona with hyperthermia and a temperature of 43 degrees Celcius. She passed away the following Wednesday afternoon. The father of Alanis, Paulo Moyano who travelled with his daughter from the island to Barcelona, told of his anger and hurt surrounding the circumstances of her death. “I would like to know who sold the

According to local reports the pair tried to return to the hotel where the woman was staying but was turned away by reception. They then went back to the hostel where the man was staying and he reportedly forced her to have sex.

House blaze TWO people have sustained minor injuries in a house fire that broke out on the fifth floor of an apartment building in Calle Caracas. The fire broke out at 6.40am on Sunday morning and was quickly extinguished by the firefighters.

Taxi accident A 67-YEAR-OLD man died last Saturday in Palma after being hit by a taxi. The man was said to be walking at 5.20am on Calle del Ter near Makro. Emergency services were unable to save him.

Gentrification in Palma THERE is some debate in Mallorca about the gentrification of certain areas in Palma including Pere Garau and La Soletat. Gentrification is the process by which the original population of a sector or neighbourhood, generally centrally located, is progressively displaced by another with higher purchasing power. With the opening of more boutique four-star hotels, the development of more luxury flats and up to a 50 per cent increase in the price of housing in some areas, many people feel that the long-term local residents are being forced from these areas. An example of this process of gentrification is evident in the popular area of Santa Catalina where property prices are high, more businesses are owned by foreign residents and the weekends attract hordes of tourists and residents to party the night away. The residents of Pere Garau are traditionally between the ages of 45 and

70 years old and are concerned that this wave of foreign investment could lead to more streets being taken over by bars and restaurants, similar to Calle Fabrica in Santa Catalina. There is also growing concern that the younger generation will be unable to get onto the property ladder in their own areas due to being usurped by wealthy foreign investors. Property prices in the area are estimated to be between €2,500 to €2,800 per square metre, almost a 50 per cent increase compared to 2018. Investors and real estate agents believe that this process of gentrification can be beneficial to an area as it attracts higher spending power, encourages more business, and can improve the aesthetic landscape of an area. On the other hand, local residents have voiced concern that this investment could be better spent by introducing more health centres, a library and more green spaces for the existing

residents to enjoy. Only time will tell how the landscape of Palma will change and whether this process will

be beneficial to the area or whether it will change the traditional face of these communities.

THE mother of a young man who died after falling from a balcony in Magaluf has set up a memorial fund in his name to help youngsters fulfil their sporting aspirations. Keen sportsman, Freddie Pring, died in June after falling from at Sol Wave House.

MORE than 10,000 signatures have been collected by residents against the large cruise ships which arrive on the island throughout the summer. The petition was delivered to the Consolat de la Mar last week. Last year over 2.6 million tourists arrived on cruise ships in Palma and some people believe that this tourism model ‘is unsustainable and undesirable.’ Residents of the Portopí area have become tired of the noise of the engines and the sheer volume of tourists that pour off these ferries. Palma port recorded that, on average, five cruise ships arrive in a single day and

the record was a whopping eight ships in a day. This means that more than 15,000 cruise passengers descend on the streets of the old town which means “that many residents are leaving the neighbourhood,” said a representative from Palma XXI. Although there are over 10,000 people who oppose the cruise ships, there are also a dozen associations as well as taxi-drivers and some business owners that have come forward to defend the cruise ships as they believe that ‘it is very important for the economy of the Balearic Islands.’ Many residents believe the argument about the cruise ships is one that needs to be heard and addressed as soon as possible and regulations need to be introduced to protect both the interests of the local businesses and the residents of the island.

LUCKY ESCAPE: The festival honours those who have cheated death.

The Fiesta de Santa Marta de Ribarteme, also known as the Festival of Near Death Experiences, takes place in Las Nieves in Galicia’s Pontevedra Province every J u l y. I t t a k e s i t s S p a n i s h n a m e from the town’s church. The festival, as the name suggests, celebrates people who have narrowly escaped death during the

previous year. The event typically attracts thousands of onlookers. They travel to Las Nieves and climb into open caskets before being carried through its streets by other festival goers. Families who have had no member with near death experiences carry empty coffins as a mark of respect. T h e c o ff i n s a r e c a r r i e d t o t h e Church of Santa Marta de Ribarmete’s cemetery where festival goers pray to the saint. ‘Virgin Santa Marta, star of the north, we bring you those who saw

death,’ those at the festival traditionally say. They then give thanks for the lives saved and give gifts to the saint as a token of gratitude. The Fiesta de Santa Marta de Ribarteme has its roots not only in Christianity but also in paganism. Saint Martha of Bethany was the brother to the biblical figure Lazarus who Jesus Christ raised from the dead, according to Christian teachings. Police denounce yacht A 30-METRE yacht was denounced by the Guardia Civil for dropping anchor on posidonia in Formentera. According to the Peripheral Communication Office (PCO) of the Guardia Civil, the skipper of the vessel ‘Svetlana,’ which sails under an Australian flag, twice ignored the instructions of the Guardia Civil who warned him that he was anchored on a posidonia reef in the natural park of ses Salines. Posidonia is protected in the Balearics and has been damaged by anchors, ropes and pollution caused by boats. The surveillance service asked the crew to take the boat to an area with a sandy seabed, however the yacht remained in the same area and later in the day the patrol boat Sa Costera de la Guardia Civil sent officials to assess the situation and draw up a report.

Hospital fire SON ESPASES HOSPITAL in Palma has been forced to relocate 28 of its patients from the psychiatric ward of the facility after a fire started in the early hours. The security team at the hospital were alerted to a fire in the ward before they raised the alarm to the emergency services. Whilst waiting for the firefighters to arrive, the hospital staff followed the hospital’s evacuation protocol and successfully moved the 28 patients to safety in one of the hospital’s outside courtyards. It is believed the fire was started when one of the patients in the psychiatric ward set fire to a mattress in one of the rooms. The firefighters quickly contained the fire which meant that the flames did not spread and no major damage was caused. All of the patients were transferred to other parts of the hospital, but were slowly moved back to their rooms throughout the day.

Beach closures THE closure of the beaches of Can Pere Antoni and Ciutat Jardí is something that all residents are familiar with during the summer. The red flag can be seen fluttering over these beaches with increasing frequency as the town hall of Palma is forced to close them due to rainfall, however infrequently it rains in the summer. It may surprise some to know that Palma City Council had to close these particular beaches of Can Pere Antoni and Ciutat Jardí on 28 occasions this year due to the spills. However, since May there have only been two closures, as this year there have been fewer episodes of rainfall. The problem happens whenever it rains, as the current treatment plant is reportedly incapable of taking on rainwater and therefore discharges into the sea. The only solution to this problem would be to build a new treatment plant. However, this mea-

Until such time as the new plant can be built it is advisable to check online to see the flag status of these and any surrounding beaches and remember that they are likely to be closed following any rainfall.

FURIOUS passengers on Brussels Airlines flight SN3766 from Palma to Brussels were left stranded in Palma on Saturday. It was announced that the 5.20pm flight was cancelled due to a problem with one of the wings of the Airbus A320 that was going to take too much time to repair. Some 180 passengers were reportedly left without food or drinks whilst waiting for updates at the airport and had to wait over an hour and a half to retrieve their luggage from the plane. They were eventually shuttled to a nearby hotel at 10pm. An alternative flight was chartered to transport the passengers to Brussels on Sunday morning and the damaged aircraft returned empty to Brussels shortly after.

Royal yacht NORGE, a Norwegian yacht owned by the King of Spain, Felipe VI, has arrived in Palma and moored at the Naval base in Porto Pi. Although the yacht is owned by the King and was originally a pleasure yacht designed for leisure cruising, it is now manned by the Royal Norwegian Navy.

Bullfighting protest FOLLOWING news of bullfighting in Mallorca and its return on August 9, a group of people that feel the sport is barbaric have organised a demonstration against the event. Spearheaded by the ICA, a group that believes in the protection of animals and t he envi r onm ent , t he demonstration is due to take place on the same day as the bullfight outside the venue. Soci al m edi a has been ver y act i ve si nce t he announcement was made that the bullfight was returning with phrases such as ‘torture is not tradition’ trending. The ICA reminds people that this is a peaceful protest.

Sun cream pollution CRUISE ships are being blamed for a reported i n c re a s e i n p o l l u t i o n i n Balearic waters, especially the discharge from the swimming pools. The draining of the pools has led to a total of six environmental pollution alerts in Palma since 2010, and the last of them was one on July 8. The Ministry of Public Wo r k s c o n f i r m e d l a s t Thursday that these discharges caused oily residue in the water due to the large amount of cosmetics and sun creams which have ended up mixed with the water of the swimming pools. Once the vessel that caused the pollution has b e e n d e t e c t e d , p ro t o c o l requires an inspection to be carried out at the port. On all six of the reported incidents, it apparently became clear that the swimming pools were the source of the contamination. In all the cases mentioned, after verifying that the discharges complied with the regulations, the ships were permitted to continue t h e i r j o u r n e y a n d w e re not sanctioned after the inspection in the port, according to information provided by the Ministry headed by José Luis Ábalos. The Ministry of Public Wo r k s h a s c o n f i r m e d that all of the ships involved in such incidents w e re t o u r i s t c r u i s e l i n ers and that the water from swimming pools, showers, kitchens and t h e s h i p ’s l a u n d r y w a s contributing to the concentration of harmful substances in the water, directly affecting Palma.

THE WEEK IN POLITICS SPANISH lawmakers met in the Congress of Deputies this week to vote on whether to allow acting Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez to formally take office. The investiture process, which began on Monday with debates between party leaders and other Congress deputies, was preceded by talks between Sanchez’s left-leaning Partido Socialista (PSOE) and the leftist Podemos. The parties were deadlocked over the earlier refusal of Sanchez to appoint Podemos figures to his government. Sanchez later relented saying he could appoint some lower ranking Podemos figures if Iglesias stood aside, which he indicated he would do on Friday. Sanchez hoped to close a deal by Monday before the investiture sessions but failed to do so. Podemos accused PSOE of only offering its lawmakers ‘symbolic’ positions without any authority and said no talks were held on Monday. Sanchez therefore entered

VOTE: Lawmakers debated whether to invest Sanchez this week. the investiture debate without certain backing from Podemos. He needed their votes and those of a handful of smaller, regionalist parties to survive the first vote on Tuesday. Congressional rules state candidates for prime minister must secure an absolute majority to win in the first vote. Failing that a second vote is held where just a simple majority is needed.

Sanchez told lawmakers on Monday that dialogue was needed to resolve some of Spain’s burning political issues, including the ongoing Catalan independence question. He accused the conservative Partido Popular (PP), the centrist Ciudadanos and the farright Vox of providing fertile ground for pro-independence groups with their hard-line and confrontational rhetoric on the

issue. The stance was motivated by political strategy as much as principles. Pro-independence lawmakers are among those who could help Sanchez win the investiture vote, despite them signalling they would not support him. The PP, Ciudadanos and Vox all said they would vote against Sanchez. PP leader Pablo Casado said his party was obliged to oppose Sanchez because of its position as the leading opposition party in the Congress of Deputies. He also accused Sanchez of siding with pro-independence groups at the expense of Spain. Headline UK inflation was unchanged and on target at 2.0%, but all eyes were on parliament as investors waited to find out who would take up the role of Prime Minister and receive future direction on Brexit. The latest Economic Forecast from the European Commission estimated growth at 1.2% this year and by 1.4% in 2020, slightly less than previously projected. The change of government in Greece was welcomed, but didn’t have any particular impact on the currency. In Germany, economic sentiment fell to -24.5 while

the current situation collapsed nine points to 1.1. Across Europe as a whole, sentiment held at a relative steady -20.3. Despite inflation coming in higher than forecast at 1.3%, the expectation is that the ECB is gearing up for another round of monetary stimulus and this is likely to impact the euro. Federal Reserve chairman reported to Congress that ‘uncertainties around trade tensions and concerns about the strength of the global economy continue to weigh on the US outlook.’ In the Boston district, ‘tariffs and trade policy uncertainty were major issues for manufacturers,’ and in Philadelphia ‘trade uncertainty further delayed business investment.’ Despite the US President warning that trade talks with China have ‘a long way to go,’ the dollar was largely unaffected and continues to make gains. Any gains by the kiwi were made by default; strong US payrolls number sent it lower and the Fed chairman’s rate-cut hints pointed it north.

BAN SUPPORT: Opposition to trophies from hunting is widespread.

Support for trophy hunting ban ALMOST two thirds of the British public support a ban on trophy hunting, according to a new survey. The Survation poll found 63 per cent of respondents wanted the sport to be banned. Around three quarters supported blocking the imports of animal body parts from hunting to Britain, the same poll reported in the Daily Mirror found. It comes as the Born Free animal rights charity said about 2,500 trophies were shipped to Britain from 2008 to 2017.

Born Free’s head of policy Mark Jones said: “Trophy hunting is a cruel and damaging relic of a colonial era that causes immense animal suffering and disrupts wildlife.” Among the body parts imported were ones from 560 African elephants, more than 300 hippopotamuses and 265 American black bears. There were also almost 100 Nile crocodile parts and 80 from African lions, according to the charity. Environment Secretary Michael Gove said he would not hesitate to act if there was a case for a ban and called for evidence to be presented.

The responders speak a number of languages, and you can also fax or SMS 112. In addition, there are individual emergency numbers, depending on the type of assistance you need. It’s a good idea to keep a printout of them handy, in your bag or wallet, in the home and in the car. And it can’t hurt to have a few helpful Spanish medical/emergency terms written down, just in case you don’t get an English-speaking member of staff. National Police, also known as National Police Corps (Cuerpo Nacional de Policia, CNP), deals with criminal offences and public order in towns and cities, and can be contacted by calling 091 or 902 102 112. The latter was set up for non-Spanish to report burglaries, car theft or a break-in when documents and belongings are lost or stolen. Available in English from 9am to 2pm, all week long, the service is also available in French, German and Italian. Once the telephone report is made,

claimants have 48 hours to check and sign their statement at the police station of their choice. In the case of robbery, where threat or force has been used, victims should call 091 at the time, then go directly to a police station to make a report. The Guardia Civil is a military force which operates mostly in rural areas and is responsible for drug offences, fatal car accidents, robberies and murders, and can be contacted on 062. Local Police (Policia municipal) cover their local town or city area for traffic offences and control, lost property and crimes such as theft and neighbourhood disputes. You can reach them on 092. And a special helpine, 016, has been set up specifically to report instances of gender violence. For an ambulance (ambulancia) and health emergencies, call 061 or 112, and in the case of a fire call the fire brigade (cuerpo de bomberos) on 061 or 112. For problems at sea, the Maritime Rescue Service (Salvamento Seguridad Maritmo) can be contacted by calling 900 202 202, and the Red Cross (Cruz Rojo) on 902 222 292. Jamie’s collapse THE eye-watering figures of celebrity chef Jamie Oliver ’s ‘Jamie’s Italian’ restaurant chain have been revealed. The closure of 22 out of the 23 Italian restaurants has left the chef with losses of around £25 million. I n M a y t h i s y e a r, t h e company announced that it will be closing the doors to its flagship restaurants, leaving over 1,000 staff without employment. Jamie used £1 million of his own personal funds to pay the wages of the staff who lost their jobs, and used £18 million of investment from his personal holding account c o m p a n y, J a m i e O l i v e r Holdings, to inject into the business. These personal investments were bolstered by creditors including HSBC who reportedly put forward a staggering £39.4 million in secured loans.

The bank said in its Spain Situation report expected recoveries in other economies, a more accommodative monetary policy and falling oil prices meant economic output (GDP) would grow more. The bank said around 810,000 jobs would be created if their forecasts are accurate and that the unemployment rate could fall to 12.2 per cent by the end of 2020.

‘Google tax’ plan return THE government will introduce a new tax on large multinational technology companies despite similar proposals in France facing threats from the industry, Spain’s acting Finance Minister said. Maria Jesus Montero said the proposed levy, dubbed the ‘Google tax,’ would be tabled before lawmakers once the government is formally sworn in. It comes after the tax formed part of the left-leaning Partido Socialista’s (PSOE) government’s draft budget plans which failed to pass last year. French officials faced legal threats from companies after floating a similar tax recently.

Funds save Dia THE Dia supermarket chain has avoided technical bankruptcy after creditors agreed to restructure its debts. The company reached an 11th-hour deal to get a €490 million loan from its new owners LetterOne, owned by Russian tycoon Mikhail Fridman. The funds were used to pay off bonds ahead of a deadline on Monday. Dia finance head Enrique Wickert said the funds meant the company now had an ‘adequate and solid’ financial structure. New liquidity lines of €280 million have also been opened, with €80 million going to suppliers. The bailout follows €144 million losses in the first quarter of 2019.

TELECOMMUNICATIONS company Telefonica has reached an agreement with trade unions which guarantee the right of workers to ‘digitally disconnect’ out of hours, with the CCOO saying it would make the firm a benchmark in the labour market.

File appeal THE National Securities and Markets Commission (CNMV) watchdog has filed an appeal with the Supreme Court to stop the publication of a file detailing why it fined the Popular Bank €1 million in 2016, claiming it contains confidential information.

Youth wages at 1990’s levels YOUNG workers without qualifications are now earning the same as their counterparts did in the 1990s and make less than a decade ago, according to the Bank of Spain. Spain’s central bank, which carried out a study on earnings during the past 30 years, said young unskilled workers experienced the biggest drop in income. The study focused on salary purchasing power, factoring in inflation.

Bank Governor Hernandez de Cos said each generation saw earnings rise up until the 2008 financial crisis, when wages for all began to drop. High unemployment, a fall in working hours and the rising costs of rent all contributed to the fall. The study also found the average Spanish worker was 13 per cent poorer due to the recession which began after the crisis.

Tax evasion list ruling SPAIN’S Constitutional Court has agreed to admit a list of suspected tax fraudsters as evidence in an evasion sentence appeal hearing. The Constitutional Court ruled the so-called Falciani list was legitimate evidence. It includes the names of some 13,000 people who allegedly stashed money in the Swiss subsidiary of British bank HSBC. The court ruling follows an appeal from engineering entrepreneur Sixto Delgado de la Coba after he was jailed for six years for stashing some €5.2 million in the bank. Delgado appealed the sentence claiming the use of the list violated his right to the presumption of innocence. The Constitutional Court’s ruling follows one from the Supreme Court which agreed to admit the list as evidence in February 2017 when it was probing tax evasion. More than 500 Spanish taxpayers were convicted after their names were found on the list and probed by the Tax Agency. Falciana came to Spain after stealing the list and the National court has twice turned down extradition requests from Switzerland.

Spending warning THE public spending watchdog of Spain has warned the city councils of Madrid, Cordoba and Las Palmas de Gran Canaria after their spending rose by more than 10 per cent. The Independent Authority of Fiscal Responsibility (AIREF) said the increases were well above those allowed by local and regional spending rules. Tenerife’s island council was also warned about its spending. AIREF has called for regional authorities to intervene and for the budgets to be revised, either by cutting spending or increasing taxes. The body has also recommended controls be placed on several councils which plan to increase spending by 8 per cent. These include Almonte, Jaen and Jerez de la Frontera. So many concurred with my views I almost (but not quite!) considered registering as a contender for number 10. (Yeah yeah!). What did surprise me was that for about the first time in my 30 years of column scribble, I actually received not one single missive of dissent. It probably shows how desperate we all are for a bit of common sense, which was basically all the piece was about. ‘Fraid it’s all a pipe dream though folks. A couple of recent events show that we are all still at the mercy of the lunatics, who are surely now firmly in charge of the asylum. Does anyone remember Roy Larner? Roy was one of the heroes of the London Bridge terrorist attack. When the incident took place, Roy, who was having a beer on the terrace of one of the bars, launched himself at one of the aggressors and received eight knife slashes and a painful stint in hospital for his brave efforts. Hailed by the public as the ‘lion of Millwall’ Roy was accredited with possibly having saved even further injuries or deaths occurring during the attack. Surely now was the time to present this man’s remarkable courage with some form of official recognition? Wrong. In a move that is almost beyond belief (although in this day and age, noth-

Give us a break. For the sake of sanity, honour this brave man with the medal and recognition he deserves. What on Earth has happened to our values when we reward our heroes with persecution? Winston must be positively spinning! Sometimes I really do despair of it all. The second bit of time wasting,

brain numbing nonsense that emerged this week, was the usual suspects wingeing and whining that the choice of a black woman to play a white cat in the new film version of ‘Cats’ was racist! Is that pathetic or wot? I’ve actually discovered a new ploy. Whenever I hear one of these individuals call someone a racist, in my mind’s eye I substitute the meaning of the word to ‘patriot.’ The level of satisfaction is wonderful - and it makes far more sense. DEAR Ed Aren’t guests from home horrible? We recently had some who came to us, knowing we had dogs, then moaned for the week that they didn’t like dogs and shoo’ing ours away. We had another couple who would make themselves three of four cups of tea in our kitchen, every morning and wouldn’t even offer to make us one. Another just left the air-conditioning on for the week, and in return for his free holiday bought us a menu del dia for the princely sum of €8.50 each. Big deal. Then we had other guests whose dietary requirements left our kitchen smelling like a greasy spoon, all they wanted were good old fashioned fryups and then they complained that they only liked back bacon, as we only had streaky! If you see a tourist at the airport, walking funny with a bit of streaky bacon hanging from the rear of his shorts, please tell him he left his sunglasses by my pool. D Clarke

Not very welcome DEAR Editor Last year, I stayed on holiday in the beach area of Oliva. Lovely apartment, nice beach, great food etc. But I do not speak Spanish and I never read a newspaper on holiday, so I was in blissful ignorance of what was going on that weekend, I was there. BRITAIN and Spain are going through some of the biggest political changes in recent months. Britain got a new prime minister this week just over three years after Theresa May took over from David Cameron. Meanwhile here in Spain, acting Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez’s future was by no means secure as he faced lawmakers in the investiture vote which began with debates on Monday. Changes at the top in both countries come on the back of years of political upheaval, uncertainty and impasse. Brexit has swept away all other issues to become the certain and at many times sole political issue confronting Westminster. But considerable opposition to Britain’s departure from the EU and a delicate parliamentary situation has meant a solution has eluded lawmakers since the referendum in 2016. Numbers in Spain’s Congress of Deputies leaves Sanchez and his left-leaning Partido Socialista (PSOE) in a similar predicament. Despite winning almost double the seats of their rival the conservative Partido Popular (PP) in April, PSOE still fell well short of a majority. Those results produced the protracted coalition talks with the leftist Podemos and this week’s uncertain investiture vote. Uncertain times make for interesting news. But while we focus on what happens in the corridors of power, we cannot forget their impact on ordinary people, including expatriates. We hope that whatever the future holds London and Madrid will continue to look out for the interests of expatriates.

WE all have a need to heal who we are. It will make our life much easier to move on in a positive way. We know this. We feel this. Letting go of the negativity is something we all want. During our lifetime we have been hurt many times and we will be hurt again. You will begin to heal yourself when you let go of past hurts. Easier said than done you may answer now. But you can do this. Forgive those who have wronged you. Have compassion. But first of all learn to forgive yourself for your mistakes. Or better, for your lessons in life. Then it will be much easier to forgive others, to start the healing. To take the next wonderful step

into your future. You will find most - if not all - of the answers to how to forgive yourself within yourself. Life has already taught most of us the purpose of forgiving, the unique feeling that goes with it. Some say it is like a wonder happening to us. A great feeling of relief. Of letting go and feeling very good. You may be surprised how much you already know about this if you give yourself the chance to look deeper into who you are, why you do certain things, how you feel. Just take time to think about it. From the day we were born life has been teaching us thousands of things, it never stops. The school of life has no end date. And yes, that is wonderful. We can make mistakes, make some more, make them into lessons and move on. It is a natural process. So keep on learning. As long as we do not deliberately hurt others, humans and animals. That of

course is very important. Some points to consider when you want to forgive yourself and therefore heal your soul: * Remember that we are all learning life lessons - so do not be too hard on yourself - be gentle with who you are * If you feel you made a mistake, learn to accept it as a lesson - look at it and decide how you want to deal with it and move on * Make excuses if needed, in the first instance to yourself * Have patience, whatever age you are, we will be learning all the time * Even when you feel you made a mistake twice or even many more times, it is ok, it is your personal learning process * Know that every one of us needs to learn everything in life… so in a way… until you have learned something, you can not know ‘Heal your soul first, then the

Keep cool TEMPERATURES are soaring and the heat can cause significant health problems so it’s extremely important to take care of yourself and those around you. Here are some tips for looking after yourself this summer: • Drink more water than usual and don’t wait until you are thirsty. Experts recommend that you should be drinking almost three litres of water per day as a woman and almost four for a man. • Avoid alcohol. Alcohol is a diuretic, so you will lose more water content from your body when you drink alcohol, so no matter how lovely that ice-cold beer or gin and tonic looks, try and keep them to a minimum. • Take a cool shower or bath. This will lower your body temperature, but cool rather than cold, gradual cooling down the body is far better for you. • Use air conditioning or a fan. Common sense really, these items are designed to cool the air around you, HYDRATED: Drink plenty of water. but be warned air-conditioning can

dry the air, so make sure you drink more water when it is on. • Wear lightweight and loose clothing, preferably of natural fibres like cotton or linen. • In the kitchen, avoid using the hob or oven during the heat of the day. Enjoy salads and cold food or a nice refreshing ice-cream. • Avoid exercise during the hottest time of the day, including doing chores or work. Think like a Spaniard and have a siesta during the hot afternoons. • Rest often in shady areas. Sunbathing is all well and good, but the best time is early morning or late afternoon when the sun is not so ferocious. • Wear a wide-brimmed hat. • Use sunscreen of SPF 35 or higher (the most effective products say ‘broad spectrum’ or ‘UVA/UVB protection’ on their labels) and reapply regularly, particularly after swimming or showering. We would also suggest that you make sure others are not suffering in the heat: • Check-in on elderly and vulnerable neighbours during hot weather - twice a day is best. • Never leave a person, child or a pet in a hot car. • Check regularly on babies and toddlers and keep them out of the hot sun, particularly during the hottest times of the day. Enjoy the summer sun, but keep yourself well.

WE Brits have become much less trusting, haven’t we? According to a Charities Aid Foundation study, the proportion of Brits who donate to charity has fallen for the third year to 57 per cent. UK charities are struggling to recover from a series of scandals: senior Oxfam aid workers paying survivors of the 2010 Haiti earthquake for sex, Save The Children covering up sexual harassment of staff by executives and a ‘toxic working culture’ at Amnesty International. And betrayal of trust is one of the hardest things any person or institution must face, so much harder to repair when lost or stolen than any material goods.

Do monthly tenants have rights? Some friends have been renting an apartment in Fuengirola for 17 years. They have always paid the rent correctly (in cash) and have receipts for all the payments. Now the owner tells them the rent deal has terminated, and that they have four months to move out. My friends have never had a written contract. The owner alleges that there has often been noise from their apartment, and that they already had been warned many times. My friends have never received a written complaint. What rights do they have? Are there special rules for long-term rentals? As the wife is very sick, moving to another place would be hard. M B (Costa del Sol) In the first place your friends do not have a YOU AND THE long-term contract. LAW IN SPAIN They rent from month to month and the owner can terminate this rental whenever he wants. Properly, he should give you written notice of his intent to terminate the rental, and he only needs to give notice of one month for this. So the notice of four months is actually generous.

LAURA PENN ‘PENN TO PAPER’ HAVE you ever had the experience of being in a busy, noisy place and hearing your name through all the commotion? It happened to me in the middle of a carrefoc! Through the melee of drums and chainsaws I distinctly heard my name, and not even shouted. It reminded me of an event during my first year studying psychology at university. The lecturer asked for a volunteer and, having an overdeveloped need to please combined with an under-developed sense of self-awareness, I thrust my arm up. The task involved wearing headphones and repeating out loud what was being said to my left ear. No problem. Then the lecturer began giving me instructions in my right ear. Also, no problem. But that was the problem for the lecturer. Apparently, I wasn’t supposed to be able to do that. Most people can attend to one information stream, but throw in a second one and they get confused. For some reason I don’t. I take no credit for this ability, like rolling your tongue or licking your elbow, it’s just something that I can do. (I bet you tried to lick your elbow, then didn’t you?) Unlike elbow licking, this talent for absorbing audio information has been extremely useful to me over the years, and not just professionally.

NOISY PLACE: The ability to single out one source of audio is a uniquely human talent. As a radio and TV presenter I have often had to cheerfully keep waffling away while directors have either whispered reassuringly or yelled forcefully down my earpiece or headphones. Once I was hosting a live television show on ITV (with no script) when something went very wrong and my only instruction was to ‘Keep talking!’... so I did, for over three minutes. Try it! This ability to filter out salient sounds from ambient background noise is known as the ‘Cocktail Party Phenomenon.’ Research on it be-

gan in the 1950s when air traffic controllers received messages from pilots over loudspeakers in the control room. A cognitive psychologist named Colin Cherry did a series of tests where he asked participants to pay attention to information in one headphone while different information played in their other ear. In most cases people were unable to recall any of the secondary information, and did not even notice when it changed from English to German. However, they could distinguish when a male

voice changed to a female voice and when certain important words, such as their name, were said. Other words that stood out were dangerous ones and profanities - which explains how your ‘deaf’ grandma could always hear you swearing. It also explains why a dedicated sports fan cannot hear you when the match is on, or a ‘Love Island’ fan ignoring you when the luvvies are gathered at the firepit. This ability to single out one source of audio is a uniquely human talent. Most people can walk into a noisy room and have a private conversation with ease, as if the other voices were muted. Speech recognition on this level is something that we can do that machines find impossible. Right now developers are working to try to get Alexa to be able to differentiate between different voices in a crowded environment. Imagine how useful that would be in the world of espionage! There are rudimental ways to get your Echo device to recognise your voice but only if you want all the employees at Amazon to hear you. Just one more reason why I will never, own or speak to one of those things! Humans are tricky enough without having to talk to computers too.
