Youngsters take up clean coast cause SOME 50 young people in Adra decided to do their bit to care for the local coastline. The group set about collecting rubbish in the area surrounding the town port breakwater following a call for action on social media. Between them they filled around 20 rubbish bags. Adra mayor Manuel Cortes and members of his governing team went along to meet the youngsters.
Cortes thanked the group for their “worthy of respect” initiative and for their “voluntary participation” in the care and maintenance of the town. He described their action as “an example” for the local community “from which w e h a v e to lea rn a g re a t deal,” remarking that keeping the municipality rubbish-free “is a matter for everyone.” Adra Council collaborated w ith th e g ro u p o n the
clean-up efforts, providing materials like gloves, rubbish bags and the supervision of Civil Protection and the Local Police.

Increase in genderbased violence cases THE number of gender-based violence cases in Almeria is up on last year. The latest figures from the Government Subdelegation for the province show there are currently 1,964 active cases in Almeria registered in the VioGen system, 24 more than at the end of 2018. VioGen was set up by the Interior Ministry in 2007 to bring together the public institutions covering gender-based violence for more effective risk assessment and prevention and victim protection, and for more rapid action. The head of the Government Sub-delegation’s violence against women unit, Raquel Contreras, described VioGen as “a valuable tool when it comes to evaluating the situation and the needs of women who are victims of mistreatment.” Since 2003, 34 women in Almeria have been killed by their partners or former partners, and two children have died in gender violence-related cases since 2013; this was the first year the children of women who are gender violence victims were included in the victim figures. Since then five children in the province have been orphaned as a result of gender-based aggression.
At this time there are 95 suspected abusers with restraining orders against them in Almeria who have to wear electronic tagging devices, the Sub-delegation statistics reveal. Of these, 27 were fitted between January and May, 12.5 per cent more than in the same period of last year. In the first five months of the year, 140 women in the province were registered in the telephone assistance and protection service for gender violence victims. This allows users to contact a qualified person by mobile at any time and provides a localisation service as a means of protection. In February Arboleas, Cantoria, Gador, Los Gallardos, Tabernas, Tiiola and Zurgena became the latest provincial municipalities to become part of the VioGen system, putting the total number at 25. They joined Adra, Albox, Alhama de Almeria, Almeria City, Berja, Carboneras, Cuevas del Almanzora, Dalias, El Ejido, Garrucha, Huercal de Almería, HuercalOvera, La Mojonera, Mojacar, Olula del Rio, Pulpi, Vera and Vicar. Local councils receive funding for projects and programmes to fight gender-based violence, including awareness-raising campaigns and workshops.

Refugee children escape extreme heat WESTERN Saharan children from Tindouf refugee camp in Algeria are escaping the extreme heat of summer staying with families across Almeria. The 67 10 to 12-year olds are spending the hottest months of the year in the province under the Friends of the Sahara Association ‘Holidays in peace’ initiative, now in its 20th year. The children paid a visit to the provincial government offices last week, where they were welcomed by Diputacion President Javier A Garcia. “This is your land, the Almeria families are your family and this is your province,” Garcia told the children. The provincial council president thanked the association and the host families from 27 different municipalities for their ‘solidarity,’ which he said was key to

Since the Holidays in Peace programme was launched in 1999 nearly 2,400 Sahrawi children living in the Tindouf camp have come to Almeria for July and August, when temperatures in that part of Algeria can climb to over 50ºC. During their stays they have medical checks, receive vaccinations and are treated for any illnesses.
Workman killed in roof collapse ONE workman died and another suffered minor injuries when the roof of a building undergoing reforms in Berja collapsed. Three of the labourers working on the threestorey structure made it out on their own and
alerted the emergencies services that their 49year-old colleague was trapped under rubble, Spanish media reported. The fire service recovered his body a couple of hours later. Berja Council staged a one-minute silence the

THE Almeria Provincial Court has sentenced two administrators of a property promotion company to pay compensation to some 30 foreign nationals, mainly British, who handed over money for houses built on land not classified for development in Los Llanos del Peral in Zurgena, Spanish press reported. According to Spanish media the cour t r ul i ng f ound t he t wo m en guilty of land planning crimes, imposing a six-month prison sentence and fines of six euros a day for 12 months. They ar e al so pr event ed f r om working in any profession related to property promotion or construction for six months. The amount of compensation they must pay to the foreign buyers has not yet been established, but it will be calculated on the basis of what they paid for the properties, Spanish media said. The court highlighted the point expatriates ‘paid out large amounts of money without obtaining anything in return.’ The building works were halted by judicial order in January 2005.

Life and death THIS picture of people being carried in coffins in Galicia comes as a town in the region prepares to mark a festival celebrating near death experiences on Monday. The Fiesta de Santa Marta de Ribarteme, also known as the Festival of Near Death Experiences, takes place in Las Nieves in Galicia’s Pontevedra Province every J u l y. I t t a k e s i t s S p a n i s h n a m e from the town’s church. The festival, as the name suggests, celebrates people who have narrowly escaped death during the
previous year. The event typically attracts thousands of onlookers. They travel to Las Nieves and climb into open caskets before being carried through its streets by other festival goers. Families who have had no member with near death experiences carry empty coffins as a mark of respect. T h e c o ff i n s a r e c a r r i e d t o t h e Church of Santa Marta de Ribarmete’s cemetery where festival goers pray to the saint. ‘Virgin Santa Marta, star of the north, we bring you those who saw
death,’ those at the festival traditionally say. They then give thanks for the lives saved and give gifts to the saint as a token of gratitude. The Fiesta de Santa Marta de Ribarteme has its roots not only in Christianity but also in paganism. Saint Martha of Bethany was the brother to the biblical figure Lazarus who Jesus Christ raised from the dead, according to Christian teachings. July 29 is her feast day in the Catholic and Protestant churches.
Road control THE Local Police headquarters in Almeria City has been equipped with a new, high-tech traffic control system, centralising all information on traffic flow, roundabouts, crossroads, restricted accesses and signals from 100 cameras, 10 automatic access panels, signposting panels, and vehicle detectors to monitor traffic density.

GUARDIA CIVIL investigating a suspected house break-in and reports a shot had been fired discovered hundreds of marihuana plants. When officers arrived at the scene in Vicar they found a 63-year-old man with injuries to his arms yelling from a nearby property. He told officers six hooded attackers had forced their way into his house on the same street. When the patrol went to the property in search of the thieves they found more than 500 marihuana plants growing in three rooms and an unauthorised connection to the power supply. The 63-year-old admitted it was his property and said he was responsible for looking after the cultivation. He told officers the attackers had been after the marihuana and had forced their way through the front door and threatened him with a gun. The Guardia said the investigation remains open.

A WOMAN is under arrest for falsely claiming her car had been stolen to dodge paying traffic fines. The Guardia Civil said the 49-year-old from Roquetas de Mar prompted a time-consuming investigation to try and locate the vehicle when she reported the alleged theft back in March. Enquiries revealed that before making the theft claim she had in fact sold the car. There was no sale contract and the vehicle change of ownership had not been done, hence she received a number of traffic violation notifications in her name. The Guardia said that was when she decided to make out the car had been nicked to avoid paying the corresponding fines. However, the officers investigating the supposed crime tracked down the car. A number of witnesses and the car owner confirmed the vehicle sale had taken place.

POLICE and Guardia Civil have dug up a bumper crop of illegal marihuana plantations in recent weeks. In Ejido police arrested the 30-year-old owner of a house where there were 365 marihuana plants at various stages of development and drying in the basement, along with the usual type of equipment used for plantations of this kind: halogen lamps, ventilators, air-conditioning units, and the like. Also typical was how police learned about the possible existence of the marihuana production operation. A number of local residents voiced suspicions the property was being used to cultivate the drug given the strong smell of marihuana coming from a pipe on the roof terrace. Investigations confirmed neighbours’ reports, and revealed there was an unauthorised connection to the electricity network. A Guardia Civil operation in Berja led to the arrest of a man and a woman for growing marihuana in two rooms of a house and on the patio and for illegally connecting to the power supply. Officers found the drug already picked and drying, along with marihuana buds. They also seized three compressed air rifles, pellets and a knife. In a second operation in the same town officers came across 125 marihuana plants, 21 of them already dried, and an unauthorised hook up to the electricity. They detained the man living in the property with his girlfriend and young son. The operation reaping the highest marihuana plant count was in nearby Adra. A

LATEST FINDS: Guardia Civil discovered marihuana growing in an uninhabited building in Roquetas, and made three arrests in Adra. Guardia investigation resulted in the location of a warehouse containing 900, plus yet another illegal electricity connection. In this case it was to power a highly sophisticated automated energy and security system. Officers surprised two individuals looking after the plantation when they raided the warehouse. In Roquetas de Mar Guardia Civil came across over 230 marihuana plants growing in an abandoned property. This investigation re-
mains open: the Guardia have not ruled out arresting whoever was responsible for the plantation. Earlier this week, Guardia Civil dismantled a plantation with more than 1,000 plants in a warehouse in Lucainena de las Torres, along with a high-tech germination laboratory with just over 1,000 cuttings ready to be planted. Five people have been charged for growing marihuana and illegal gun ownership and power supply connections.

IT was a night of supercharged, adrenalin-filled excitement in Cuevas del Almanzora on Saturday when the municipality hosted the Spanish Supercross Championship. Some 5,500 dirt-bike racing enthusiasts turned out to watch 48 of the best riders on the national scene roaring round the Rincon de la Bonil circuit. Portuguese racer, and series leader, Paulo Alberto, took first place on the podium in the second challenge of this year’s championship. Carlos Fernandez Macanas from Murcia was second and Joan Cros was third after winning the Face to Face. In the KTM Cup for the youngest riders, Spanishbased British rider George Cherry was champ on the night. He was joined on the podium by Eric Rubio and Alex Gabarda. Organised by the Motoclub Bajo Almanzora and supported by Cuevas Council, the event came to a close in spectacular style with an impressive firework display.
Odds on claim untrue GUARDIA CIVIL suspect a Nijar man’s claim someone stole €3,900 from his car is false. The Guardia said investigations revealed the vehicle’s roof canvas had been damaged, but added that a robber would have had to have known about the cash and exactly where it had been hidden inside the car. A chronological reconstruction of the facts put 35-year-old MH in a games hall playing roulette at the time he supposedly discovered his money had been taken, ‘his version of events being impossible,’ the Guardia stated. The statement also said MH had ‘spent long periods of time’ in a number of different games halls. He now faces charges of simulating a crime.

ta Natural Park and for supporting larger patrol boats. The 10-metre long Aister RAL 1100 ZSF has a speed of more than 45 knots. It is one of five boats Almeria Guardia Civil uses for coast-
line duties, including protecting marine life, checking fishing activities, protecting archaeological heritage, and preventing smuggling and the dumping of waste products into the sea.
Wave of migrant rescues MARITIME RESCUE picked up 58 Sub-Saharans from a small boat in Almerian waters in the Alboran Sea on Sunday, among them four children. Last week Maritime Rescue operating in the Alboran Sea went to the aid of a series of dinghies carrying migrants trying to reach the Spanish coastline from Morocco. They also recovered the body of a woman.

Historic find beamed live ARCHAEOLOGISTS excavating the site of the ancient ‘Mojacar la Vieja’ settlement broadcast the discovery of a 13th century urn live on social media. The team from Granada University’s MEMOLab painstakingly unearthed the Muslim era find last week
during what is the second phase of the dig on the historic site. Mojacar Council and the Valpariso Foundation are collaborating on the project, which Tourism Councillor Emmanuel Agüero has described as of great importance for the whole province.

Blue flags flying on Mojacar beaches
OFFICIAL: Mayor Rosmari Cano at the flag-raising ceremonies. BLUE Flags are flying on two of Mojacar’s beaches. The Venta del Bancal and Marina de la Torre have qualified for the European Foundation for Environmental Education recognitions this year for meeting a strict set of criteria on beach environmental and quality standards. Mayor Rosmari Cano was at last week’s official flag-raising ceremonies, accompanied by members of her government team, local lifeguards and the managers of some of the area’s main hotels. Also this year, seven of Mojacar’s beaches have earned the Secretary of State for Tourism SICTID Quality Award. Mojacar boasts 17 kilometres of coastline. In addition to the better known stretches of sand, there are a number of protected smaller beaches outside the town; what they lack in services they make up for with the charm of a more natural setting. Mojacar’s larger beaches are covered by a Local Police and lifeguard service during the summer season to deal with emergencies, first-aid and general enquiries. Facilities at lifeguards’ disposal include defibrillators, oxygen, amphibious bathing chairs for those with disabilities and medical equipment, along with a nearby ambulance service. In addition, they have allterrain vehicles, sea motors and zodiac boats for emergencies. At the weekends the lifeguards run a ‘Junior Rescuer’ programme, organising fun, but educational rescue information and drills for children and parents, as well as demonstrating how to perform basic resuscitation techniques.

A SUSPECTED thief is under arrest after Guardia Civil officers found him hiding under a bed. He was one of four 23 to 32-year olds officers detained in connection with break-ins at two homes in Campohermoso. A member of the public alerted the
Guardia in the early hours of the morning, reporting they had seen individuals clambering over a wall and walking across roofs. When a Guardia patrol arrived at the scene they surprised one burglar,
who fled inside the first property. Officers caught up with him despite his best efforts to get away. Two others they came across inside the house got out onto an internal patio and up onto the roof. They made

off with officers in hot pursuit until they ran out of escape options, and after putting up strong resistance were finally cuffed. Officers discovered the fourth member of the gang concealed below a bed in the next door house. They also found a plastic bag containing stolen items.

The task is to follow it.” Karen has been made a lifetime member of PAWSPATAS, which she said allows her to “continue to speak and vote if needed.” She told members, “You all know I am in the wings for anything else that might come along.” The former president continued, “Deep in my heart those hundreds of foster puppy eyes will remain, along with the bonds of friendships made.

Take care - use a condom PEOPLE are being urged to remember to use a condom during casual sex encounters following a surge in syphilis cases across Europe. Last month the World Health Organisation revealed that about one million people a day catch a sexually transmitted disease, and earlier this month Durex chose Spain to launch a new global campaign warning of the dangers of STIs (sexually transmitted infections). Called ‘Unforgettable Nights’ it launched in Spain because of an increase in STIs here. In the case of syphilis, for the first time since the 2000s new cases of the STI are more frequent than diagnoses of HIV in some countries. According to a report from the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) new cases of syphilis have risen 70 per cent since 2010. The increase has been driven by more unprotected sex and general-
ly riskier sexual behaviour. More opportunity for casual sex may also be to blame. Susana Ramón, is a microbiological doctor. Speaking to Diario de Mallorca she said: “There is a reemergence of sexually transmitted diseases in developed countries. The use of prostitutes is a high risk activity, where ‘clients’ should always take precautions and use condoms.

Tarantula farm found in Spain POLICE have found 400 tarantula spiders in a flat in Xilxes, Castellon. The creatures found are poisonous but do not pose a danger to human life. Officers of Seprona de Burriana found the spiders, belonging to 49 different species of tarantula, as part of an operation against the breeding and trade of exotic species. A man has been reported for breeding and keeping the tarantulas without a licence and for not having the compulsory insurance for the possession of potentially dangerous animals.

SPANISH lawmakers met in the Congress of Deputies this week to vote on whether to allow acting Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez to formally take office. The investiture process, which began on Monday with debates between party leaders and other Congress deputies, was preceded by talks between Sanchez’s left-leaning Partido Socialista (PSOE) and the leftist Podemos. The parties were deadlocked over the earlier refusal of Sanchez to appoint Podemos figures to his government. Sanchez later relented saying
Decision time he could appoint some lower ranking Podemos figures if Iglesias stood aside, which he indicated he would do on Friday. Sanchez hoped to close a deal by Monday before the investiture sessions but failed to do so. Podemos accused PSOE of only offering its lawmakers ‘symbolic’ positions without any authority and said no talks were held on Monday. Sanchez therefore entered the investiture debate without
certain backing from Podemos. He needed their votes and those of a handful of smaller, regionalist parties to survive the first vote on Tuesday. Rallying cry THE centrist Ciudadanos’ candidate for Barcelona mayor has called for regional and far-right nationalism to be fought in equal measure as his party’s identity crisis rumbles on. Manuel Valls told Spanish media his decision to break ranks with Ciudadanos and back incumbent Mayor Ada Colau represented the ‘first great defeat’ of Catalan nationalism. Despite Colau’s remaining in office being seen as a victory for Valls, he appeared more pessimistic when it came to his party’s dealings with the far-right Vox. He called on his party to take the fight to Vox. “Those who have fought against nationalism in Cataluña should fight with the same force against Vox’s nationalism. They are both political adversaries,” Valls said. It comes as ruptures have developed in Ciudadanos over local and regional branches joining with the far-right party to get into power. Leader Albert Rivera has thrown the party’s lot in with others to the right of it. This led Ciudadanos, Vox and the conservative Partido Popular (PP) to be seen as a three-pronged rightist front which could take power by banding together. But the strategy has alienated those on Ciudadanos’ liberal and progressive wing such as Valls.

He accused the conservative Partido Popular (PP), the centrist Ciudadanos and the farright Vox of providing fertile ground for pro-independence groups with their hard-line and confrontational rhetoric on the issue. The stance was motivated by political strategy as much as principles. Pro-independence lawmakers are among those who could help Sanchez win the investiture vote, despite them signalling they would not support him. The PP, Ciudadanos and Vox all said they would vote against Sanchez. PP leader Pablo Casado said his party was obliged to oppose Sanchez because of its position as the leading opposition party in the Congress of Deputies. He also accused Sanchez of siding with pro-independence groups at the expense of Spain. What to do in the event of an emergency in Spain LIVING in Spain can bring with it an array of issues which may not have been encountered when living in the UK. There are lots of things to consider, and we are here to help try to make the transition and life in Spain a little easier by compiling a series of helpful facts and figures relating to a variety of topics. HERE in Spain there is a general number for all emergencies, 112. No area code is needed and the number can be called from any phone, including mobiles without a Spanish SIM card. The responders speak a number of languages, and you can also fax or SMS 112. In addition, there are individual emergency numbers, depending on the type of assistance you need. It’s a good idea to keep a printout of them handy, in your bag or wallet, in the home and in the car. And it can’t hurt to have a few helpful Spanish medical/emergency terms written down, just in case you don’t get an Englishspeaking member of staff. National Police, also known as National Police Corps (Cuerpo Nacional de Policia, CNP), deals with criminal offences and public order in towns and cities, and can be contacted by calling 091 or 902 102 112. The latter was set up for non-Spanish to report burglaries, car theft or a break-in when documents and belongings are lost or stolen. Available in English from 9am to 2pm, all week long, the service is also available in French, German and Italian. Once the telephone report is made,
claimants have 48 hours to check and sign their statement at the police station of their choice. In the case of robbery, where threat or force has been used, victims should call 091 at the time, then go directly to a police station to make a report. The Guardia Civil is a military force which operates mostly in rural areas and is responsible for drug offences, fatal car accidents, robberies and murders, and can be contacted on 062. Local Police (Policia municipal) cover their local town or city area for traffic offences and control, lost property and crimes such as theft and neighbourhood disputes. You can reach them on 092. And a special helpine, 016, has been set up specifically to report instances of gender violence. For an ambulance (ambulancia) and health emergencies, call 061 or 112, and in the case of a fire call the fire brigade (cuerpo de bomberos) on 061 or 112. For problems at sea, the Maritime Rescue Service (Salvamento Seguridad Maritmo) can be contacted by calling 900 202 202, and the Red Cross (Cruz Rojo) on 902 222 292. There is also a Red Cross 24- hour helpline 900 100 333.

BAN SUPPORT: Opposition to trophies from hunting is widespread.
Support for trophy hunting ban ALMOST two thirds of the British public support a ban on trophy hunting, according to a new survey. The Survation poll found 63 per cent of respondents wanted the sport to be banned. Around three quarters supported blocking the imports of animal body parts from hunting to Britain, the same poll reported in the Daily Mirror found. It comes as the Born Free animal rights charity said about 2,500 trophies were shipped to Britain from 2008 to 2017.
Born Free’s head of policy Mark Jones said: “Trophy hunting is a cruel and damaging relic of a colonial era that causes immense animal suffering and disrupts wildlife.” Among the body parts imported were ones from 560 African elephants, more than 300 hippopotamuses and 265 American black bears. There were also almost 100 Nile crocodile parts and 80 from African lions, according to the charity. Environment Secretary Michael Gove said he would not hesitate to act if there was a case for a ban and called for evidence to be presented.

SPANISH bank BBVA’s economic growth forecast for 2019 has been revised up to 2.3 per cent from 2.2 per cent predicted three months ago. The bank said in its Spain Situation report expected recoveries in other economies, a more accommodative monetary policy and falling oil prices meant economic output (GDP) would grow more. The bank said around 810,000 jobs would be created if their forecasts are accurate and that the unemployment rate could fall to 12.2 per cent by the end of 2020.

‘Google tax’ plan return THE government will introduce a new tax on large multinational technology companies despite similar proposals in France facing threats from the industry, Spain’s acting Finance Minister said. Maria Jesus Montero said the proposed levy, dubbed the ‘Google tax,’ would be tabled before lawmakers once the government is formally sworn in. It comes after the tax formed part of the left-leaning Partido Socialista’s (PSOE) government’s draft budget plans which failed to pass last year. French officials faced legal threats from companies after floating a similar tax recently.

Funds save Dia THE Dia supermarket chain has avoided technical bankruptcy after creditors agreed to restructure its debts. The company reached an 11th-hour deal to get a €490 million loan from its new owners LetterOne, owned by Russian tycoon Mikhail Fridman. The funds were used to pay off bonds ahead of a deadline on Monday. Dia finance head Enrique Wickert said the funds meant the company now had an ‘adequate and solid’ financial structure. New liquidity lines of €280 million have also been opened, with €80 million going to suppliers. The bailout follows €144 million losses in the first quarter of 2019.

File appeal THE National Securities and Markets Commission (CNMV) watchdog has filed an appeal with the Supreme Court to stop the publication of a file detailing why it fined the Popular Bank €1 million in 2016, claiming it contains confidential information.
Youth wages at 1990’s levels YOUNG workers without qualifications are now earning the same as their counterparts did in the 1990s and make less than a decade ago, according to the Bank of Spain. Spain’s central bank, which carried out a study on earnings during the past 30 years, said young unskilled workers experienced the biggest drop in income. The study focused on salary purchasing power, factoring in inflation.
Bank Governor Hernandez de Cos said each generation saw earnings rise up until the 2008 financial crisis, when wages for all began to drop. High unemployment, a fall in working hours and the rising costs of rent all contributed to the fall. The study also found the average Spanish worker was 13 per cent poorer due to the recession which began after the crisis.

Tax evasion list ruling SPAIN’S Constitutional Court has agreed to admit a list of suspected tax fraudsters as evidence in an evasion sentence appeal hearing. The Constitutional Court ruled the so-called Falciani list was legitimate evidence. It includes the names of some 13,000 people who allegedly stashed money in the Swiss subsidiary of British bank HSBC. The court ruling follows an appeal from engineering entrepreneur Sixto Delgado de la Coba after he was jailed for six years for stashing some €5.2 million in the bank. Delgado appealed the sentence claiming the use of the list violated his right to the presumption of innocence. The Constitutional Court’s ruling follows one from the Supreme Court which agreed to admit the list as evidence in February 2017 when it was probing tax evasion. More than 500 Spanish taxpayers were convicted after their names were found on the list and probed by the Tax Agency. Falciana came to Spain after stealing the list and the National court has twice turned down extradition requests from Switzerland.

Spending warning THE public spending watchdog of Spain has warned the city councils of Madrid, Cordoba and Las Palmas de Gran Canaria after their spending rose by more than 10 per cent. The Independent Authority of Fiscal Responsibility (AIREF) said the increases were well above those allowed by local and regional spending rules. Tenerife’s island council was also warned about its spending. AIREF has called for regional authorities to intervene and for the budgets to be revised, either by cutting spending or increasing taxes. The body has also recommended controls be placed on several councils which plan to increase spending by 8 per cent. These include Almonte, Jaen and Jerez de la Frontera. It also called for the Spanish Treasury to take action against the regional authorities of Madrid, Navarra and the Canary Islands because of the high growth in their unfunded spending. AIREF also singled out the regions of Aragon, Cantabria, Castilla-La Mancha, Cataluña, Extremadura, Murcia and Valencia for planning to spend above legal limits. Green light for buyout SPAIN’S National Securities and Market Commision (CNMV) watchdog has approved a bid from the Asset Management and Industrial Machinery (GAMI) holding company to take over General Machinery Rental (GAM) for €1.72 a share.

LEAPY LEE SAYS IT OTHERS THINK IT FIRSTLY let me thank all of those who responded to my ‘What If’ Party manifesto last week. So many concurred with my views I almost (but not quite!) considered registering as a contender for number 10. (Yeah yeah!). What did surprise me was that for about the first time in my 30 years of column scribble, I actually received not one single missive of dissent. It probably shows how desperate we all are for a bit of common sense, which was basically all the piece was about. ‘Fraid it’s all a pipe dream though folks. A couple of recent events show that we are all still at the mercy of the lunatics, who are surely now firmly in charge of the asylum. Does anyone remember Roy Larner? Roy was one of the heroes of the London Bridge terrorist attack. When the incident took place, Roy, who was having a beer on the terrace of one of the bars, launched himself at one of the aggressors and received eight knife slashes and a painful stint in hospital for his brave efforts. Hailed by the public as the ‘lion of Millwall’ Roy was accredited with possibly having saved even further injuries or deaths occurring during the attack. Surely now was the time to present this man’s remarkable courage with some form of official recognition? Wrong. In a move that is almost beyond belief (although in this day and age, noth-

ing surprises me!) the authorities have decided to actually place Roy himself on the anti-terrorist watch list! Apparently, he cried out the name ‘Millwall,’ his favourite football team, as he launched into his counter attack; therefore they consider that he may now be the one who should be watched and even have to attend de- radicalisation classes. In the words of the great John McEnroe, surely they can’t be serious? Does this mean they are going to attempt to ‘deradicalise’ all the football fans that support the
clubs of the UK? Well good luck with that! Can you imagine how many of the anti-terrorist brigade it would take to arrest all the Liverpool fans chanting ‘Come on you Reds’ on a Saturday afternoon? Give us a break. For the sake of sanity, honour this brave man with the medal and recognition he deserves. What on Earth has happened to our values when we reward our heroes with persecution? Winston must be positively spinning! Sometimes I really do despair of it all. The second bit of time wasting,
brain numbing nonsense that emerged this week, was the usual suspects wingeing and whining that the choice of a black woman to play a white cat in the new film version of ‘Cats’ was racist! Is that pathetic or wot? I’ve actually discovered a new ploy. Whenever I hear one of these individuals call someone a racist, in my mind’s eye I substitute the meaning of the word to ‘patriot.’ The level of satisfaction is wonderful - and it makes far more sense. DEAR Ed Aren’t guests from home horrible? We recently had some who came to us, knowing we had dogs, then moaned for the week that they didn’t like dogs and shoo’ing ours away. We had another couple who would make themselves three of four cups of tea in our kitchen, every morning and wouldn’t even offer to make us one. Another just left the air-conditioning on for the week, and in return for his free holiday bought us a menu del dia for the princely sum of €8.50 each. Big deal. Then we had other guests whose dietary requirements left our kitchen smelling like a greasy spoon, all they wanted were good old fashioned fryups and then they complained that they only liked back bacon, as we only had streaky! If you see a tourist at the airport, walking funny with a bit of streaky bacon hanging from the rear of his shorts, please tell him he left his sunglasses by my pool. D Clarke

Not very welcome DEAR Editor Last year, I stayed on holiday in the beach area of Oliva. Lovely apartment, nice beach, great food etc. But I do not speak Spanish and I never read a newspaper on holiday, so I was in blissful ignorance of what was going on that weekend, I was there. I got up early as I could not sleep in the high temperatures and decided to go for a tranquil stroll on the beach. BRITAIN and Spain are going through some of the biggest political changes in recent months. Britain got a new prime minister this week just over three years after Theresa May took over from David Cameron. Meanwhile here in Spain, acting Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez’s future was by no means secure as he faced lawmakers in the investiture vote which began with debates on Monday. Changes at the top in both countries come on the back of years of political upheaval, uncertainty and impasse. Brexit has swept away all other issues to become the certain and at many times sole political issue confronting Westminster. But considerable opposition to Britain’s departure from the EU and a delicate parliamentary situation has meant a solution has eluded lawmakers since the referendum in 2016. Numbers in Spain’s Congress of Deputies leaves Sanchez and his left-leaning Partido Socialista (PSOE) in a similar predicament. Despite winning almost double the seats of their rival the conservative Partido Popular (PP) in April, PSOE still fell well short of a majority. Those results produced the protracted coalition talks with the leftist Podemos and this week’s uncertain investiture vote. Uncertain times make for interesting news. But while we focus on what happens in the corridors of power, we cannot forget their impact on ordinary people, including expatriates. We hope that whatever the future holds London and Madrid will continue to look out for the interests of expatriates.

That of course is very important.

Keep cool TEMPERATURES are soaring and the heat can cause significant health problems so it’s extremely important to take care of yourself and those around you. Here are some tips for looking after yourself this summer: • Drink more water than usual and don’t wait until you are thirsty. Experts recommend that you should be drinking almost three litres of water per day as a woman and almost four for a man. • Avoid alcohol. Alcohol is a diuretic, so you will lose more water content from your body when you drink alcohol, so no matter how lovely that ice-cold beer or gin and tonic looks, try and keep them to a minimum. • Take a cool shower or bath. This will lower your body temperature, but cool rather than cold, gradual cooling down the body is far better for you. • Use air conditioning or a fan. Common sense really, these items are designed to cool the air around you, but be warned air-conditioning can dry the air, so make sure you drink more water when it is on. • Wear lightweight and loose clothing, preferably of natural fibres like cotton or linen. • In the kitchen, avoid using the hob or oven during the heat of the day. Enjoy salads and cold food or a nice refreshing ice-cream. • Avoid exercise during the hottest time of the day, including doing chores or work. Think like a Spaniard and have a siesta during the hot afternoons. • Rest often in shady areas. Sunbathing is all well and good, but the best time is early morning or late afternoon when the sun is not so ferocious. • Wear a wide-brimmed hat. • Use sunscreen of SPF 35 or higher (the most effective products say ‘broad spectrum’ or ‘UVA/UVB protection’ on their

Reducing appearance of wrinkles naturally DELAYING wrinkles for as long as possible can simply be a matter of good habits. The basic recommendations include using appropriate protection from the sun, not smoking, not drinking too much and never sleeping with makeup on. It is also important to moisturise, hydrate and, claim some health professionals, feed the skin with antioxidants. Sleep plays a huge role towards the appearance of skin. Results show that those getting enough sleep had an average score of 2.2 and the poor sleepers had an average score of 4.4, with the higher score meaning the skin looked older. After five nights of poor sleep, participants had up to double the amount of fine lines and wrinkles and a lot more brown spots than those getting a good night’s rest. Getting more vitamin C may help to reduce the appearance of wrinkles. A study of 4,000 women carried out in 2007 found that those who had higher intakes of vitamin C had lower levels of wrinkles and dryness. Another major source of skin problems is thought to be stress. In 2015, researchers examined skin in 5,000 participants. Those experiencing high levels of stress had more itchy, scaly skin and rashes.

ANOTHER busy, hot week here at Olive Tree Farm has flown by! As the oven door had smashed into a million pieces just over a week ago, I have found myself making use of the hob and the pressure cooker, which to be honest was better than heating up the house further, by waiting for the oven to reach temperature and then use it to cook in. The good news was, that despite the glass on the oven door not being covered by the warranty, I took it back to the shop and was surprised when they rang me to say a replacement was there waiting for me to collect. Now that is what I call service. This week’s recipe was well received by everyone. It’s a simple salad with a cheeky spicy dressing. The toasted sweet corn definitely gave this salad a nutty flavour and is well worth doing. If you are vegetarian simply omit the bacon. Ingredients For the Chilli Lime Dressing • 1/2 cup mayonnaise • 1/2 cup sour cream (I got mine from Lidl) • 1 garlic clove, minced • 1 lime, juice and zest • 1/4 teaspoon chili powder • 1/8 teaspoon ground cayenne pepper (optional) For the Pasta Salad • 300g bag frozen corn defrosted • 2 cups small shaped cooked pasta eg farfalle, macaroni, or penne
OLIVE TREE FARM was set up about four years ago with the intention of achieving a level of self sufficiency. We have poultry for meat and eggs, goats for milk, rabbits and small pigs for meat and harvest our 70 olive trees each year for oil. We also grow a variety of fruits and vegetables.
• 4 spring onions, sliced - I couldn’t find any, so just used chopped chives • 1 large avocado peeled and stoned and cut into small chunks • 1 jalapeño, seeded and finely chopped (I used a few from a small jar) • 1/4 cup chopped cilantro • 1/2 cup Cotija cheese cut into small cubes, I used Manchego, but cheddar also works • 6-8 strips bacon, cooked until crispy and chopped or crumbled (optional) • Salt and ground black pepper to taste
Method To prepare the corn Heat a heavy frying pan over medium high heat. When hot, add the corn kernels in a single layer and cook for about 3-5 minutes. Stir and cook until the corn is charred. You may have to repeat this process until all the corn is nicely charred. I did it in batches. To make the Chilli-Lime Dressing In a small bowl, combine the mayonnaise, sour cream, minced garlic, lime zest and juice, chilli powder and cayenne (if using). Whisk until well combined. You can also add all ingredients to a small jar, fasten on the lid and give it a good shake if you haven’t got a whisk. Set to one side. If making ahead store in the fridge. Make the Pasta Salad In a large bowl, mix the charred corn, the cooked pasta, green onions, crispy bacon, jalapeño, cilantro and cheese, and stir everything through. Leave the avocado until last so it doesn’t break up too quickly. You can refrigerate both salad and dressing until ready to serve, and either stir the dressing through just before serving, or, serve the dressing separately. Check seasoning before serving, adding a twist of salt and black pepper to taste. Both salad and dressing keep for two to three days if kept in the fridge.

Albox man WHO advisor ALBOX-born university professor Francisco B Ortega will be advising the World Health Organisation on sport and health. He is the only Spaniard selected to make up a committee of 25 experts who will spend 18 months systematically examining scientific evidence on physical activity and health in order to draw up specific recommendations for the WHO on children, teenagers, adults, the elderly, pregnant women and groups with specific chronic conditions and disabilities. Ortega, a lecturer in the University of Granada’s Physical and Sports Education department, joins investigators from countries including Canada, Australia, the US and the UK, as well as from elsewhere in Europe and Africa, on the WHO committee. He was chosen from
among more than 150 experts from around the world. The 25 members met at WHO headquarters in Geneva at the beginning of July and will now work together via video conferencing and electronic media until they meet in person again next year to evaluate the evidence and put forward their recommendation proposals. The university said Ortega saw his appointment to the international committee as not only a great opportunity for himself, but also for his research group, the Sport Science faculty and for international awareness of the University of Granada. The 2020 Global Recommendations on Physical Activity for Health are part of the WHO’s global plan on the issue for 2018 to 2030 under the slogan ‘More Active People for a Healthier World.’

Summer sounds THE sound of music has been filling the squares of Albox town and the surrounding hamlets this month. For the third year in a row, the Albox Musical Cultural Association and the Albox Municipal Music School, together with the local council, have been staging a series of performances courtesy of a group of the local music teachers: Javier on saxophone and flute, trumpet player Angel, Juan Javier on clarinet and trombone, Maria Dolores tinkling the ivories on the piano, Martin providing guitar and
percussion, and Juan playing the baritone saxophone and providing the vocals. The programme for this, the third Sounds of Summer Cycle, features a range of different musical genres. Pasodobles, Argentinian tango, rock and the soundtracks from some of the most memorable movies of all time are just some of the free musical treats which many local people have been enjoying. This year’s series of hour-long concerts started with a performance in Aljambra and comes to a close next Tuesday July
30 in Albox town’s Plaza Mayor. The Sounds of Summer Cycle makes up part of the programme of open-air activities Albox local authority is organising along with different local associations and municipal schools over the peak holiday months. Newly appointed Culture councillor Maria Dolores Fiñana said the aim of the Sounds of Summer initiative was to “bring music to every corner of Albox, hence every year it is staged in different locations in the municipality.”

Flying free again AN injured royal owl found by a member of the public in Tijola in June has now been released back into the wild. The Andalucia regional government’s Almeria delegate for Agriculture, Fishing and Sustainable Development, Aranzazu Martin, took part in freeing the young owl in the Las Armoladeras ravine area. When the owl was first found Junta de Andalucia environment officers took it to a vet to be checked over. It turned out the bird had a wound in one of its eyes, which had partially affected its vision and meant it could not fly properly.
Fortunately the injury was not too serious. The owl was then transferred to the Las Almohallas CREA recovery centre for threatened species in the Sierra de Maria-Los Velez National Park in Velez-Blanco, where it spent a period recovering from the trauma. Once it was determined the bird was well enough to be returned to the wild it was taken to a ‘flying’ facility to make sure it was ready for flight and to check its acclimatisation to its natural environment and its ability to hunt its prey. The Las Almohallas is the province’s main recovery centre for
the rescue, treatment and recovery of native fauna. Birds are the most common type of wildlife the centre receives, followed by Mora tortoises. Nearly two-thirds of the wildlife taken to the centre are returned to the wild once they have recovered. Aranzuzu Martin highlighted the contribution of the public to the rescue of wildlife in Almeria, where it is most commonly private individuals who find and hand over injured creatures. She also stressed anyone finding injured wildlife should put it in the hands of Environment Officers, the Guardia Civil or call 112.

Assistance for self-employed A PROVINCIAL government initiative to assist the self-employed got underway in Fines last week. The ‘Today with Almeria self-employed’ events are aimed at informing this sector of the working population about their rights and the resources available to them. There were 25 participants from across the Almanzora Valley region at the session staged in Fines Town Hall’s multiple uses building. They were, the provincial council said, from various different walks of life, and included entrepreneurs, professionals and tradespeople working for themselves. The participants received details on changes which may affect selfemployed work in relation to Social Security payments, loans, assistance and subsidies. They also had the opportunity to exchange ideas and to make contacts at a networking breakfast. Employment and Economic Promotion deputy, Carmen Navarro, said the Diputacion de Almeria wanted to show its “commitment to the province’s self-employed workers, dealing with their demands and establishing new lines of assistance to encourage enterprise.” She explained the matters covered in the events had been chosen by the self-employed themselves at roundtables held in different parts of the province. Further sessions will take place in different regions of the province in the autumn, and specifically in Berja, Fiñana, Sorbas, Laujar de Andarax, Vera and Huercal de Almeria. The choice of venues was based on factors like the number of self-employed in the area, geographical position, number of inhabitants and accessibility. The cycle of informative days follow a recently signed agreement between the provincial administration and the Andalucia Union of Self-Employed Professionals and Workers.

Where are their brains? MIKE SENKER IN MY OPINION Views of a Grumpy Old Man IT’S the silly season and we know it’s important for Spain to have a strong tourist trade and, for many years before I moved here, I was someone who always came here for holidays with my family. What I’d like to know is what happens to some of these visitors the minute they land? They seem to ditch their brains and manners at the luggage reclaim. Why would you want to bring wine and beer bottles down to a swimming pool and proceed to drink from the bottle in the pool and then get all aggressive when asked not to? I mean is it unreasonable to point out if the glass gets broken in the pool nobody can use it? The list is endless. Staying on the terrace of your apartment ‘til 5am making so much noise that nobody can sleep. Getting home at 3am then clip clopping around in your shoes, (mostly ladies this one) and then deciding to rearrange every chair by dragging it across the floor. All I’m saying is be a bit
considerate and if something is said, just stop for a second and think about apologising instead of taking it as a challenge for a fight. We also have a couple of apartments we rent and some of the things our renters come up with are jaw dropping. One phoned this week at 11pm to tell us that the frying pan was too big and could we get them a smaller one because the big one took longer to cook things. Or how about the one that left the keys in the lock inside and wanted us to pay for a locksmith to let them back in and retrieve the keys. One of my favourites is the couple that called at 3am because the electric had tripped. As I recall, I wasn’t that polite to them. And, of course, the ones that, although they are told to lock up properly, don’t. They leave windows open when they go out. They don’t read all the information and advice they are given and then wonder why their passports, money and other valuables, left on view, get nicked by a crafty little thief that is just waiting for the usually very intelligent individual to get his holiday brain on and to forget everything he would normally do when leaving his own house. Pause for reflection I GUESS most of us can remember our first day at work. Mine, 57 years ago, almost to the day, saw me presenting myself, in smart new suit, at the Personnel Office of the British Rail, Eastern Region, Civil Engineers Department above King’s Cross Station. The paper I proudly presented confirmed that I was a graduate of the Institution of Civil Engineers, so I was a little shocked when that was dismissed with little more than a cursory glance, and after a series of explanations on railway culture, I was issued with a rail pass and overalls and told to report to the maintenance depot at 8am sharp the following morning in suitable clothes and boots, as I was being employed, not as a qualified engineer, but as a labourer working on drainage. For the engineers’ department, in their wisdom, considered experience more valuable than qualifications alone, so required all graduate entries to spend their first six months’ employment as labourers, learning the practice, rather than just the theory of their chosen profession. A shock at the time, but in retrospect those three months deep underground repairing and cleaning a
section of the old Victorian sewers (always had a compartment to myself going home after work!) then three months track-laying, were probably the most valuable in the whole of my career. Time and again the foreman would produce a drawing from the design office and challenge me to identify the errors, before explaining how we could work round design faults to get the job done. How careful I later became to consult those who would implement my designs, before finalising them, for indeed practical experience and ability is often more valuable than theoretical understanding. And this can also be true for us as Christians. ‘Faith without works is dead,’ declared St James, thought to have been a brother of Jesus, in his Biblical letter. So a baptism certificate or membership of a particular church says nothing about our Christian faith. No matter how religious we may be, it’s not that, but the way we live our lives, loving our neighbours and serving God in humility, showing his love to others that gives credence to our claim to be Christian.

THE Aruba.it Racing rider Alvaro Bautista must be wondering what he has done to deserve the luck he is having at the moment coming into the mid-season break in this year ’s World Superbike Championship. T h e r i d e r f r o m To l e d o started 2019 in record breaking fashion, taking 11 straight victories in the first four rounds, giving him a title lead of 61 points. The title looked to be a foregone conclusion. However, the reigning champion, Irishman Jonathan Rea, was always closely on his heels, never finishing any lower than third place. Rounds five, six and seven would see Bautista rack up three more victories but also three crucial DNFs,
