Save our sea By Marco March THE Mar Menor is dying and the marine life being poisoned by pollutant waste according to a group of dedicated individuals who are petitioning the government to save the unique site which is popular with British tourists and expats. Led by Bill Hulse, the group of passionate environmentalists have banded together to pressure the council into making the necessary adjustments to the Mar Menor’s flood and drainage systems. And they are appealing for members of the public to sign a petition they have set up at www.change.org ‘Petition. Save the Mar Menor. The Mar Menor is a serene body of water boasting unique geological formations and interesting aquatic inhabitants such as seahorses making it a snorkeller’s paradise. Addressed to politicians and officials, the petition reads: ‘The Mar Menor is unique in Europe, and perhaps the world. Now it is slowly dying, and the marine creatures, such as the sea horses, that live in it are being poisoned, as are the surrounding beaches.
MAR MENOR: Petition set up to protect the unique site and its marine life. ‘The discharge of polluting products from agriculture, especially nitrates, as well as sewage, industrial discharges, etc, continue to enter the Mar Menor. Also, the flooding around the Los Alcazares area is getting worse every year, adding to the pollution, and people’s homes are being threatened.’ The group claims the ‘main
reason for these disasters is the failure of authorities and politicians alike to ensure that the canals and waterways are constructed to prevent flooding, are kept clear and in good repair and that they do not allow pollutants to reach the water ’s edge.’ “Please sign the petition and help us protect the environment, and the people who live near to and around the Mar Menor,” added Bill Hulse.

Boy in critical condition
AN 11-year-old boy from Murcia has been rushed to the emergency ward of a hospital in the Murcian neighbourhood of El Carmen after he reportedly fell out of a window. The emergency services were alerted at 10.25pm with news that a child was badly injured and arrived in good time to help the young lad. The paramedics stayed at the scene for some time to attend to the child’s immediate injuries before sending him off to the hospital where he is currently receiving intensive care.

Stamp of quality SEVERAL beaches on the Orihuela coast have received the coveted Qualitur flags for their exemplary quality standards. Others received blue flags to show they have passed quality regulations. The councillor for Beaches, Dámaso Aparicio and councillor for Health, Jose Galiano, raised the flags on the Orihuela beaches. Aparicio commended the council for its continued efforts to improve the facilities and management on the beaches of Orihuela. He also gave thanks to the Valencian Tourism Agency for recognising Orihuela as a quality tourist destination.

Montesinos frauds THE Local Police of Montesinos have seized 185 fraudulent items - mostly handbags and watches - from a van at the town market. T h e a l l e g e d i l l e g a l s t re e t v e n d o r s taken in for questioning were also selling badges of well-known brands that could be sewn onto any type of
clothing. The police confiscated 11 of these counterfeit badges on Friday from a van which was parked up next to several other legitimate stalls. The courts are yet to decide whether to destroy the products pending an analysis from a team of experts.

Cash bid THE Feminist Movement of Murcia is demanding more funding from the regional government following two cases of women being attacked by men in Murcia and Malaga. The group aims to use this funding to prevent any further cases of gender violence in the future and have organised protests to bring attention to their cause.
THE tranquillising drug Rivotril, popular with the mafia, has officially been made illegal and can now only be prescribed by a medical professional. Pharmacists and health centres in Murcia have reportedly received threats over the counter as people ‘demand’ their fix of the highly addictive drug.
Dog beaches AFTER numerous requests from the locals, canines will now be able to enjoy a dip in the sea at certain beaches specifically designated for dogs in the region of Murcia. The municipalities of Mazarron, Aguilas, Lorca and Cartagena have all designated at least one section of beach.
Lights on THE city council of Murcia has committed to installing a new lighting system in several of the parks in and around the city. The proximity censors will turn on the lights when pedestrians walk by, causing less electricity to be used whilst illuminating the areas.
Knife fight TWO men were stabbed over the weekend on Extremadura Street in the centre of Orihuela after the Reconquista festival. Witnesses report that three men were arguing in the street and two of them collapsed after suffering lesions to the head and arms. The third man ran away unharmed.

LUCKY ESCAPE: The festival honours those who have cheated death.
Life and death THIS picture of people being carried in coffins in Galicia comes as a town in the region prepares to mark a festival celebrating near death experiences on Monday. The Fiesta de Santa Marta de Ribarteme, also known as the Festival of Near Death Experiences, takes place in Las Nieves in Galicia’s Pontevedra Province every J u l y. I t t a k e s i t s S p a n i s h n a m e from the town’s church. The festival, as the name suggests, celebrates people who have narrowly escaped death during the
previous year. The event typically attracts thousands of onlookers. They travel to Las Nieves and climb into open caskets before being carried through its streets by other festival goers. Families who have had no member with near death experiences carry empty coffins as a mark of respect. T h e c o ff i n s a r e c a r r i e d t o t h e Church of Santa Marta de Ribarmete’s cemetery where festival goers pray to the saint. ‘Virgin Santa Marta, star of the north, we bring you those who saw
death,’ those at the festival traditionally say. They then give thanks for the lives saved and give gifts to the saint as a token of gratitude. The Fiesta de Santa Marta de Ribarteme has its roots not only in Christianity but also in paganism. Saint Martha of Bethany was the brother to the biblical figure Lazarus who Jesus Christ raised from the dead, according to Christian teachings. July 29 is her feast day in the Catholic and Protestant churches.

Arrested for fraud A 23-YEAR-OLD woman from Navarra has been arrested in Murcia for allegedly soliciting multiple online payments amounting to €6,380 following a sales transaction. The young woman was reportedly selling a mobile accessory for the ‘reasonable price of €300’ on a wellknown online marketplace platform. After she found a buyer and a sale was agreed upon by both parties, the woman claimed that the transaction had not gone through. She then solicited a further 21 transactions all for the same amount after multiple payments from other buyers. The Guardia Civil based in Tudela worked with their counterparts in Murcia to find and arrest the woman in Operation ‘Parchoso.’ They found out after interviewing the victims of the crime that they hadn’t filed a complaint immediately as they were ashamed of being taken advantage of.

Jail for threats THE Provincial Court of Murcia has sentenced a man to 11 months in prison after he sent a series of death threats to his ex-girlfriend. The woman who had been threatened first brought the case to the attention of the police back in 2017. The investigation that followed revealed the offensive text messages sent to her mobile phone which continued through May and June of that year. The detainee also stood accused of threatening to take the woman’s baby from her pram but the court could not find enough evidence to support this claim and deemed the threat unlikely to transpire. The court ended proceedings on Tuesday and the man was transported directly to Murcia City jail. The woman also took out a restraining order against him which means he won’t be able to come within 300 metres of her or her child for the next four years.

Competitive Brits MORE than 40 teams took part in the annual La Manga netball tournament last weekend turning the Club Resort into a frenzy of competitive Brits hungry for the prestigious clout that comes with winning the event. The team from Rojales had come up just short of a place in the final in previous years by getting knocked out in the semis. This year however they breezed through almost all the knockout games
and pipped the other semi-finalists to make it into the final for the first time. Their last test would be an experienced Manchester team who came to win. Rojales weren’t scared though, they had the dream start, ending the first half 4-1 up after displaying dominance in possession and clinical play inside the opponents third. The second half came all too quick for Rojales though

competition ended with a feast and partying into the small hours. As it’s coming to the end of the season, Rojales sent out special thanks to their coach Pedro and the Rojales Town Hall for their continued support.
Ready for action
THE Magnets Children’s Holiday Club will hold its annual festival at the church in La Siesta next week where the theme this year will be ‘Ready For Action.’ Steve and Irene Campbell, who are organising the event, said there will be all sorts of free fun to be had like games, songs, Bible stories and quizzes starting today (Thursday, July 25) and continuing through the summer until August 22.
The Campbells have been organising the festival for 16 consecutive years and in that time they have seen more than 300 children take part. They are inviting children aged four and over to come and give it a go next Thursday from 10.30am to 12.30pm in the church. There will be juice and biscuits after each session to top it off. A SPOKESPERSON from Renfe rail network has agreed with the councillor for Employment and Tourism in Murcia to promote the city as a tourist destination of particular importance through its numerous channels. The Renfe representative announced that in the coming months the rail company will release several ad campaigns aimed at promoting Murcia as a desirable tourist destination. The campaigns will also bring attention to the popular line between Cartagena and Madrid and the railworks taking place between those two stations in order to improve the user experience. Jose Garcia Rex, the councillor for Tourism, has also held talks with the struggling Corvera airport to promote the city as a prevalent tourist destination reinforcing that more foreigners could bring valuable income to the region.
Ecowarriors THE Habaneras group is continuing its environmental workshops to bring attention to the copious waste in the oceans and the harm it is doing to the planet. There is a metal shark outside the Habaneras Shopping Centre that has been filled with plastic to depict the issue of plastic waste imposing upon aquatic habitats. In what is now being referred to as operation ‘Shark Patrol’ there is an interactive virtual reality experience for customers to vividly observe the underwater habitats and the effects that polluting the ocean can have on those that live there. Customers can also interact with the litter and simulate picking it up. The ‘Shark Patrol’ will also take place on the beaches of Torrevieja every Friday until the end of August. Children will be given plastic bags to pick up litter with and there are plenty of fun activities for them to join in.

official licensed products. Products such as these having not passed through the numerous quality controls and manufacturer regulations that the more exp en s iv e b ra n d e d c lo th e s must comply with - can be almost identical to the legitimate brand items, which is why police hire professionals and ambassadors for the brands to come and identify the fakes from the real ones.
In this instance the Local Police sent samples to the c ourt to ge t the ir ruling from expert analysts. The rest of the items are being held in the police station. PAY DEAL: Murcia Local Police officers will be paid for extra hours.
Police overtime THE Local Police in Murcia will be getting paid for the extra hours that they put in now, following a long period when they were obligated to work past their shifts for little or no renumeration. The council of Murcia has been in talks with the unions UGT, Sime, CC OO, CSIF and Somos over the weekend to make allowances for extra hours that the police are putting in. They also talked about increasing police salaries. Local Police have had to work extra hours recently due to the number of personnel that have left the forces over the last couple of years.

TWO men have been arrested for selling fraudulent certificates to people that appear to have attended a nautical sports school registered in the region of Murcia. The two men aged 63 and 50 allegedly sold upwards of 155 fake degrees to people over the internet and they have made a reported €19,300. The investigation is continuing to discover new instances of fraudulent activity. The operation entitled ‘Portaviones’ was instigated after a series of complaints were made by the Fuerteventura Maritime Department. The subsidiary of the maritime authorities noticed that a number of certifications including a captain’s licence for sail boats were being sold at prices lower than the market value. The fine for sailing without a licence is up to €180,000.
THE Ministry of Tourism and Culture has set a deadline for applications to receive scholarships for outstanding hostelry and hospitality. The 10 ‘Gastro Estrellas’ scholarship awards will offer young budding chefs and hospitality entrepreneurs up to €50,000 to set up.
Underground explosions NUMEROUS calls were made to the emergency services over the weekend in lieu of an explosion that occurred underground in the sewers of La Flota. The quiet Murcian neighbourhood is not adverse to loud bangs - especially during the festival season when fireworks are let off - but the accumulation of gasses that caused the
explosion at 11pm on Saturday created an unnervingly loud noise. Witnesses at the scene of the explosion say they saw a bright flash come from the manhole cover in the middle of Almirante Laoysa Street. The fire department and the Local Police were alerted to the scene, but assured the concerned residents that no harm or damage had been done.
Clean up A CONSERVATION project to clear the overgrown roads of Aguilas has received funding by the Ministry of Public Works and Infrastructure. The aim of the operation is to improve visibility and clear drainage.
Final show THE Symphony Orchestra of the region of Murcia will end its season at the end of the month. The final tour started in Yecla and will finish in San Javier.

Commemorative contest THE International Contest of Habaneras and Polyphony in Torrevieja celebrated its 65th anniversary yesterday (Wednesday, July 24). It started with a minute’s silence to commemorate the life of Francisco Grau Vegera who led the singers from 1989 to 2005. Vegera passed away last Sunday. The competition was opened by Nuria Maddaloni, Belen Puente, Francisco Moreno, Antonio Martinez Prieto, Lucia Rodrigo and Victor Alcaùiz accompanied by Selena Cancino on piano. The group covered well-known songs such as The Girl from Marianao and Wight Night. Later into the evening China’s Beijing Tongxin Chorus took to the stage to give a rendition of At Your Side and Crops Drum amongst others. The competition was broadcast live on Television Torrevieja. Awards will be handed out on Sunday, July 28 and the winners will perform on various television networks to thousands watching from all over the world on August 10 and 25.

Music figurehead RON CARTER, one of the most celebrated double bassists, played a set at the Almansa Park in San Javier on Sunday evening. Carter has played with all of the greats including Herbie Hancock, Miles Davis, Wayne Shorter and Thelonious Monk. He was part of the legendary quintet that brought Miles Davis to fame in 1963 and has in the half a century since solidified himself as arguably the most important figurehead of jazz bass in history. Carter’s classical roots give his style a unique and complex twist as he started life on the cello often playing virtuoso pieces. He even holds the title for being the most recorded bass player ever. Chick Corea and the Spanish Hearts Band are up next in the Almansa Auditorium this evening (Thursday, July 25). Chick has played with Carter on numerous occasions and has a similarly impressive resume. Tickets are €35.

SPANISH lawmakers met in the Congress of Deputies this week to vote on whether to allow acting Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez to formally take office. The investiture process, which began on Monday with debates between party leaders and other Congress deputies, was preceded by talks between Sanchez’s left-leaning Partido Socialista (PSOE) and the leftist Podemos. The parties were deadlocked over the earlier refusal of Sanchez to appoint Podemos figures to his government. Sanchez later relented saying he could appoint some lower ranking Podemos figures if Iglesias stood aside, which he indicated he would do on Friday. Sanchez hoped to close a deal by Monday before the investiture sessions but failed to do so. Podemos accused PSOE of only offering its lawmakers ‘symbolic’ positions without any authority and said no talks were held on Monday. Sanchez therefore entered

Congressional rules state candidates for prime minister must secure an absolute majority to win in the first vote. Failing that a second vote is held where just a simple majority is needed.
Sanchez told lawmakers on Monday that dialogue was needed to resolve some of Spain’s burning political issues, including the ongoing Catalan independence question. He accused the conservative Partido Popular (PP), the centrist Ciudadanos and the farright Vox of providing fertile ground for pro-independence groups with their hard-line and confrontational rhetoric on the
issue. The stance was motivated by political strategy as much as principles. Pro-independence lawmakers are among those who could help Sanchez win the investiture vote, despite them signalling they would not support him. The PP, Ciudadanos and Vox all said they would vote against Sanchez. PP leader Pablo Casado said his party was obliged to oppose Sanchez because of its position as the leading opposition party in the Congress of Deputies. He also accused Sanchez of siding with pro-independence groups at the expense of Spain. Bleach thrown in prison warden’s face A PRISON warden has been seriously hurt after an inmate threw bleach into his face. The events took place in the isolation unit at the Sevilla II prison in Moron de la Frontera, according to prison officers’ union Acaip. The bleach was in a bucket given to the prisoner to clean his cell. As breakfast was being distributed, T M unexpectedly threw the bleach in the face of the official, who, after initial care by prison medics, had to be transferred to hospital. In the three years he has been inside, the inmate is said to have been sanctioned more than 100 times for serious altercations against prison officials in different penitentiary centres, including Algeciras, Puerto III, A Lama (Pontevedra), Teixeiro (A Coruña), Soto del Real (Madrid V) and Segovia. Drowning tragedies in Spain ming off beaches. Some 76 per cent of deaths were in rivers, swimming pools and off beaches which had no lifeguard patrols. Workman killed in roof collapse ONE workman died and another suffered minor injuries when the roof of a building undergo-
ing reforms in Berja collapsed. Three of the labourers working on the three-storey structure
managed to make it out on their own and alert the emergencies services that their 49-year-old colleague was trapped under rubble, according to Spanish media. The fire service recovered his body a couple of hours later. Berja Council staged a oneminute silence in front of the town hall in memory of the accident victim. The council offered its condolences to the 49year-old’s friends and family. The Guardia Civil has activated the judicial protocol for initiating an investigation to determine the cause of the roof collapse.

A LORRY driver died after his vehicle plunged 25 metres off a cliff when he left the road on the AS-35, in the Asturian municipality of Villayon. The lorry then burst into flames and started a small forest fire, according to Asturian emergency services (SEPA). Firefighters from SEPA were immediately mobilised, supported by a firefighting helicopter and a medical helicopter. The fire and the difficult access meant the rescue team could not reach the lorry until the helicopter had extinguished the flames. They then moved in and found the body of the driver, who had been flung several metres away during the crash.

Hundreds of people travel to the lake, unofficially named the ‘Galician Chernobyl,’ to swim and take selfies. Unfortunately what they don’t realise is that the lake’s unique colour is due to unnaturally high levels of chemical contamination. The lake is reportedly the by-product of a Second World War tungsten mine and the
water contains potentially dangerous levels of chemicals. The mine was created during the First Wo rld Wa r to mine a n iron ma nga ne s e tungstate mineral used to craft light bulb filaments. However it eventually closed in the 1980s leaving behind the now popular lake. Social media ‘influencer’ Uxía recently posted a picture at the lake and later complained that she came away with a painful rash and vomiting symptoms. But according to another post from the Instagrammer her rash was ‘a little bad, yes, but the picture was worth it.’

UNDER INFLUENCE: The proportion of drink and drug-related fatal accidents was the highest since 2012. MORE than 43 per cent of 2018’s fatal road accidents in Spain involved a driver who was drunk or had taken drugs, according to figures from a Spanish government body. The National Institute of Toxicology and Forensic Sciences (INTCF) found the proportion of accidents involving drugs or alcohol was
the highest since 2012. A total of 1,806 people died on Spanish roads last year, 24 less than in 2017 and the first decline since 2013. Data showed 94.4 per cent of those who tested positive for drugs or alcohol intake at the wheel were men. A total of 65.7 per cent were aged between 25 and 54 years old. Around 56 per cent
drove cars compared to 31.4 per cent who were riding motorcycles or scooters. Most of the cases, 61.2 per cent, involved alcohol. Drugs accounted for 44 per cent of all cases while a quarter involved medication. INTCF figures showed 38.5 per cent of the 143 pedestrians killed tested positive for alcohol of drugs.

GOING SOLO: The Méndez Núñez has left the US carrier combat group.
Spain snubs US By Dilip Kuner THE US Department of Defence has said it is disappointed by the Spanish government’s decision to permanently withdraw a frigate that had been supporting a US carrier group. The Méndez Núñez joined the combat group of the aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln, deployed since May in the Persian Gulf, with much fanfare.
The Spanish Defence Ministry confirmed this week the ship will continue on a solo round-the-world voyage. Initially, the agreement between the two governments meant that the Spanish ship would accompany the USS Abraham Lincoln on a global journey. However, Washington decided to alter its initial mission by ordering its fleet to bring forward its arrival in the Persian
Gulf in order to send “a clear and unequivocal message to the Iranian regime,” White House National Security Advisor John Bolton explained at the time. Spain’s acting Defence Minister, Margarita Robles, said on June 27 the technical agreement with Washington had been fulfilled and stressed the ministry had not contemplated the frigate “going with the combat group to a conflict zone in the Gulf.”

Researchers unearth medieval ‘newsletters’
‘LOST WORLD’: One document reported on the Spanish Armada. IRISH researchers have discovered around 200 centuriesold manuscripts, many from Spain, which come from the ‘birth’ of the global news industry. Academics from University College Cork (UCC) working in the Medici family’s archives in Florence said the documents revealed an information network stretching across medieval and ear-
ly modern Europe. Bredan Dooley, Professor of Renaissance Studies at UCC, said the network was ‘lucrative and powerful.’ “This is a discovery at the very birth of what is today’s global news industry,” Dooley said. One document which originated in Venice spoke of the Spanish Armada setting sail in 1588.
“It was heard from Lisbon that the Armada was ready with 140 or more sailing ships,” the document stated. Another newsletter from Spain reported on large numbers of Irish immigrants arriving in Galicia to flee antiCatholic persecution. Dooley said he and his collegues aimed to reconstruct the ‘fascinating’ news environment of a ‘lost world.’

Dog breeder arrested GUARDIA CIVIL have arrested a dog breeder accused of animal abuse. They say that 28-year-old DOU failed to care for several dogs properly. Officers had carried out an inspection to
make sure that the farm in Burgos complied with sanitary and animal welfare conditions. They found overcrowded and dirty conditions including piles of old food on the floor and a plague of parasites that compromised the health of many of the animals. Kennels were constructed
SPAIN already recycles more plastic than it deposits in landfills, according to non-profit organisation Cicloplast, which says the country achieved this milestone for the first time in 2017. It says that the amount of plastic waste recycled for domestic and non-domestic use in 2017 was just over one million tons, while 975,166 tons were deposited in landfills. ARTISAN BREAD: Has fallen under new regulations. GALICIA claims to make the best bread in Spain, but new regulations have enraged the makers of traditional Pan Gallego. The national Bread Law, which came into force on July 1, sets out the requirements bakers must fulfil if they wish to use the Artisan Bread label.
The majority of Galician bakeries, including those with the Protected Geographical Indication label, do not comply with new rules that are well-intentioned but clash with regional traditions. They are particularly incensed by the need to produce bread under the direction of a
master baker, a qualification that does not exist in Galicia. “It’s senseless. The law is orientated towards controlling bread made for the supermarket chains, but they haven’t stopped to think how it affects us,” said the president of the association of Orense’s Bread Manufacturers and Bakeries.

Jihadist informer By Dilip Kuner THE leader of the Jihadi terrorist group which murdered 15 people in August 2017 on Barcelona’s Rambla, was allegedly an informer for Spain’s secret service, the CNI. Abdelbaki Es Satty allegedly stayed in touch with the service right up to the days before the attack was carried out, according to Spanish digital newspaper Público.es. The news outlet claims that the CNI knew that a terrorist group based in the Catalan town of Ripoll was preparing an attack. It says it has seen evidence that confirms the intelligence agency had a re-
lationship with the man, who was not only the cell’s leader but also the Imam of Ripoll. CNI spies were allegedly m o n i t o r i n g t h e g r o u p ’s movements to and from their bomb factory. An accidental explosion at the factory in the town of Alcanar killed Satty and another member of the terrorist cell on August 16 of 2017. In response the group made the decision to launch swift attacks and the next day improvised a van rampage on Barcelona’s iconic Rambla and a second attack in Cambrils in which one woman died. A total of six terrorists involved in the two attacks were shot dead by police.

Unique Roman bust recovered by police in Spain A UNIQUE bust of the emperor Hadrian dating back to the second century BC has been recovered by the Guardia Civil. Officers belonging to the Heritage Team in Sevilla started an investigation when they learned that an archaeological piece of ‘incalculable’ historical value was being sold for €500,000. Investigators managed to identify the middle-man who was selling the item and put him under surveillance in a bid to locate the Roman bust. Officers saw that the man from the town of El Rubio (Sevilla), always accompanied members of the same family when meetings and/or appointments with other interested people took place. Therefore, the investigation focused on this family and police suspected the bust was being kept on a farm in the town of Ecija (Sevilla) owned by the suspects’ parents. After obtaining a warrant, officers spotted disturbed soil in a barn so decided to dig in search of the bust. Buried just a few centimetres under the ground they found the piece. The bust has been handed over to the Archaeological Museum of Sevilla, where it is currently being kept for study and eventual display. Three members of the same family ARQ, JRQ and CSRQ, the first two 50-year-olds born in Osuna, the third a 43-year-old born in Ecija and another person identified as PJCM aged 43 from the town of El Rubio, have been charged with a crime of misappropriation and a crime against historical heritage. Police have not reported how they came to be in possession of the bust.

Rainfall ‘below normal’ THE amount of rainfall in Spain was 16 p e r c e n t b e l o w n o rmal from the start of October to mid-July, according to AEMET Met Office data. The UN’s Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD)’s annual Maritime Connectivity Index saw Spain overtake Germany to enter the top 10. UNCTAD ranked countries according to the number of ships entering and leaving port, the number of containers moved, the amount of companies using ports and vessel sizes.

Take care - use a condom PEOPLE are being urged to remember to use a condom during casual sex encounters following a surge in syphilis cases across Europe. Last month the World Health Organisation revealed that about one million people a day catch a sexually transmitted disease, and earlier this month Durex chose Spain to launch a new global campaign warning of the dangers of STIs (sexually transmitted infections). Called ‘Unforgettable Nights’ it launched in Spain because of an increase in STIs here. In the case of syphilis, for the first time since the 2000s new cases of the STI are more frequent than diagnoses of HIV in some countries. According to a report from the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) new cases of syphilis have risen 70 per cent since 2010. The increase has been driven by more unprotected sex and general-
ly riskier sexual behaviour. More opportunity for casual sex may also be to blame. Susana Ramón, is a microbiological doctor. Speaking to Diario de Mallorca she said: “There is a reemergence of sexually transmitted diseases in developed countries. They have to be taken seriously because the consequences if they are not diagnosed in time are serious. “Experts agree that there has been a relaxation in prevention, the use of condoms, since the fear of HIV has been lost.” Overall, more than 260,000 confirmed syphilis cases were reported from 30 EU/EEA countries between 2007 and 2017. Andrew Amato-Gauci, an ECDC expert on sexually transmitted infections said: “There is a clear relationship between sexual risk behaviour and the risk of syphilis and other sexually transmitted diseases.
He said: “To reverse this trend, we need to encourage people to use condoms consistently with new and casual partners. Regular tests for syphilis and other sexually transmitted infections should also be part of the parcel, especially if there has been a risk of infection.” The most significant aspect is sexual behaviour rather than orientation and the practising of safe sex. People should be careful to always use a condom. In tourism destinations like Spain, the danger of ‘holiday romances’ is that people are more relaxed and less likely to take as much care than at home. And the prevalence of ‘clubs’ which are attractive for some groups of men on stag parties or sports trips to Spain makes it even more important for men to take extra care. The use of prostitutes is a high risk activity, where ‘clients’ should always take precautions and use condoms.
EXOTIC: But do not pose a danger to human life.
Tarantula farm found in Spain POLICE have found 400 tarantula spiders in a flat in Xilxes, Castellon. The creatures found are poisonous but do not pose a danger to human life. Officers of Seprona de Burriana found the spiders, belonging to 49 different species of tarantula, as part of an operation against the breeding and trade of exotic species. A man has been reported for breeding and keeping the tarantulas without a licence and for not having the compulsory insurance for the possession of potentially dangerous animals.

Tried to cross Med on a surfboard A MERCHANT ship has rescued a Moroccan man who was heading towards the coast of
Cadiz on a surfboard. The would-be immigrant shouted for help as he was hav-
ing problems staying afloat and was off course. According to a spokesman for Salvamento MarĂtimo, (Maritime Rescue) the rescue took place early one morning when one of the ships transiting the Straits of Gibraltar noticed the presence of a person on a surfboard. Next, the ship rescued the immigrant, who requested help in navigation when he was about 30 miles northwest of Ceuta. Rescue boat La Salvamar Atria, based in Ceuta port, met the boat and took the immigrant to Ceuta marina, where he arrived the following day. The immigrant, around 30 years old, had severe symptoms of hypothermia due to the low temperature of the sea, so he had to be treated by Red Cross staff. He will be transferred to the offices of the National Police and then sent back to Morocco under the Aliens Act.

Dutch fugitive arrested for armed robbery A DUTCH fugitive wanted for an armed assault on an Amsterdam hotel room in which a large quantity of diamonds was stolen has been arrested in Spain. National Police arrested the man in Platja d’Aro (Girona). He is accused of acting with two accomplices in the May 2018 raid. The National Police reported on Friday that the 30-yearold fugitive who is considered dangerous was identified and arrested in a crowded leisure area. Although he had changed his physical appearance and presented the officers with false Romanian documentation, his identity was confirmed from his fingerprints. The man was arrested under a European Arrest Warrant on economic, financial, public order, state security and false documentation charges. At the time of his arrest,

the Dutch criminal tried to pass to one of his companions a luxury watch, valued at more than â‚Ź15,000. The detainee, who also has

High tech safety measures THE Camino de Santiago has had a brand new high tech mobile GPS System installed by the Guardia Civil under the project name ‘Guardian Benemérito.’ The project is designed to be used with the mobile phone app, AlertCops, and is triggered by newly installed geo locations along the famous route. The aim of this is to be able to monitor the progress of walkers who initiate the tracking at their last 10 locations along the walk, meaning that if anyone gets into trouble the rescue services have a good amount of information on the person’s location.
The other advantages of the app is that it tracks route status, battery levels and mobile coverage levels as well as having safety tips direct from the Guardia Civil along the way. The collaboration between the Guardia Civil, the French National Gendarmerie and the Republican National Guard of Portugal sees officer reinforcement in the municipalities along which the trail passes. The Camino de Santiago is a pilgrimage that traverses various routes across Spain and Portugal ending up at the cathedral at Santiago de Compostella. Thousands of people take part in the walk every year.

What to do in the event of an emergency in Spain LIVING in Spain can bring with it an array of issues which may not have been encountered when living in the UK. There are lots of things to consider, and we are here to help try to make the transition and life in Spain a little easier by compiling a series of helpful facts and figures relating to a variety of topics. HERE in Spain there is a general number for all emergencies, 112. No area code is needed and the number can be called from any phone, including mobiles without a Spanish SIM card. The responders speak a number of languages, and you can also fax or SMS 112. In addition, there are individual emergency numbers, depending on the type of assistance you need. It’s a good idea to keep a printout of them handy, in your bag or wallet, in the home and in the car. And it can’t hurt to have a few helpful Spanish medical/emergency terms written down, just in case you don’t get an English-speaking member of staff. National Police, also known as National Police Corps (Cuerpo Nacional de Policia, CNP), deals with criminal offences and public order in towns and cities, and can be contacted by calling 091 or 902 102 112. The latter was set up for non-Spanish to report burglaries, car theft or a break-in when documents and belongings are lost or stolen. Available in English from 9am to 2pm, all week long, the service is also available in French, German and Italian. Once the telephone report is made,
claimants have 48 hours to check and sign their statement at the police station of their choice. In the case of robbery, where threat or force has been used, victims should call 091 at the time, then go directly to a police station to make a report. The Guardia Civil is a military force which operates mostly in rural areas and is responsible for drug offences, fatal car accidents, robberies and murders, and can be contacted on 062. Local Police (Policia municipal) cover their local town or city area for traffic offences and control, lost property and crimes such as theft and neighbourhood disputes. You can reach them on 092. And a special helpine, 016, has been set up specifically to report instances of gender violence. For an ambulance (ambulancia) and health emergencies, call 061 or 112, and in the case of a fire call the fire brigade (cuerpo de bomberos) on 061 or 112. Would-be murderer dies in hospital A 32-YEAR-OLD man who tried to kill his ex-partner and mother-in-law died in Denia hospital after swallowing hydrochloric acid. The couple, both Romanian,
maintained relations for only nine months and had not seen each other for a year before the attack. Police afterwards confirmed that there were no past reports of gender violence.
Depopulation ‘spreading’ A DECLINE in populations is no longer confined to small rural Spanish towns and is spreading to some cities, according to a new demographic study. The Autonomous University of Barcelona’s report found about 776,000 young people aged between 25 and 39 migrated from their home regions from 2013 to 2017. Castilla y Leon was the region which lost the largest proportion of its young university-educated population. More than 38 per cent of those born there left for other parts of Spain, according to the study. Research showed depopulation was beginning to affect provincial capitals, not just rural areas. The study found Madrid took the largest share of migrating young people. A total of 28.8 per cent of graduates aged between 25 and 39 living there were born outside of the capital.
He entered his former partner’s apartment while she was out with her family, hiding for several hours and confronting her when she returned and went to bed. As her ex tried to stab her, the 26-year-old woman warded off most of the blows with her arms but her mother, who went to her defence, was stabbed only millimetres away from her heart. The two women were admitted to hospital for attention to their cuts and injuries, none of which initially appeared to be serious, including the potentially fatal stab wound so near the mother’s heart. The attacker fled but was found by Denia’s National Police in his own home where he had drunk hydrochloric acid, which is easily purchased anywhere in Spain as salfuman drain cleaner. He was taken under guard to hospital where he died several hours later.

Catral NEWS ONCE again residents around the Vega Baja area stood in silent protest and as a mark of respect on Monday July 22 to another woman who has suffered gender violence. This time, a 48-year-old woman known as Maria was murdered by her estranged husband who broke a restraining order in Vilalba to attack her. The vigil in Catral took place from 9pm to 9.10pm.
Offensive fly tipping THERE has been an outbreak of fly tipping in a little used rural road in the Catral area with huge amounts of waste dumped which stretch on both sides of the road for several hundred metres. Included in the enormous amount of waste material left on the road were white goods, furniture, mattresses, blankets, barrels and the amount is so large that it must have transported on at least one full lorry. Local residents are up in arms about this and one suggests on social media that the town needs a proper recycling centre so that this

THERE was a spectacular procession on Sunday as San Fulgencio celebrated its traditional Festival of Our Lady Carmen. The parading of the statue of the Virgin was the highpoint of the celebrations that started on July 12 and have been carrying on ever since. They are just about complete now - having gone on longer than in many other parts of Spain - but there is one more event to come. This weekend will see a ‘tractor’ competition that allows local farmers to show off their skills. It takes place on Saturday and Sunday from 9am at the Espacio multiusos Comercial-Cultural.

Getting down to business THE new councillors at San Fulgencio Council have settled in and are now getting down to serious business. Expat representatives Darren Parmenter and Sue Hull have been busy working alongside their colleagues. Councillor for Tourism, Darren last week had a meeting
with his counterpart in Guardamar who, in this case, is the mayor, Jose Luis Sáez Pastor. They discussed a number of subjects in which both municipalities could work together in the future which included much-needed transport links. The mayor looks forward to
seeing many people from San Fulgencio at the upcoming Moors and Christians parades which are a very popular event across the Vega Baja and beyond and is an important part of the tourism calendar. Meanwhile, demonstrating a commitment to the future of youth services - especially employment opportunities - in San Fulgencio, councillors Ana Villena (Education) and Samantha Hull (Youth) discussed a range of subjects with Mayse Garrido who is a Youth Technician for the Valencian Community. As the new administration beds in we are hoping to report on its policies, hopes and achievements for the people of San Fulgencio and La Marina in the coming weeks.

THE Movimiento Ciudadano La Zenia - Asociacion de Vecinos y Comerciantes is a not for profit organisation created to represent the interests of those who live in La Zenia. It has in the past taken positive action to alert the council in Orihuela (to which residents pay their taxes) about short-
comings in the way in which the area is treated. Over a period of years, the group has canvassed the council to make changes in the area, arguing that although residents pay high taxes, they receive a disproportionate amount in return and even local amenities have very little spent on them
with many open green areas left unattended. The group has its own Facebook page at movimientociu dadanolazenia and regularly reports on matters affecting residents both socially and in the town hall and will report positive as well as negative news of the area.

Migrants rush border fence AROUND 50 people rushed the border of Spain’s African enclave of Melilla on Friday, a c c ording to the Inte r i or Ministry. Two people were taken to hospital following the rush which took place at a section of the fence between Rostrogordo and Rio Nano. Border forces claimed the migrants got passed security cordons before spreading out for a lmos t tw o a nd a hal f kilometres along the fence. Officers returned 25 of the migrants to Morocco, the Interior Ministry said. Gender reassignment CHANGES to the age at which a person can identify as another gender are being discussed at the highest levels. The Constitutional Court has declared that minors ‘with sufficient maturity’ and that ‘are in a stable situation of transsexuality’ can apply for their sex change in the Civil Registry before turning 18, which has been the legal age for such a declaration until now. The current laws prevent minors and their parents from urging the modification of the reference to gender in the census and other official documents. The judges will resolve the question that the Supreme Court raised in March 2016 when it examined a complaint filed by a transsexual child from Benasque (Huesca) who wished to modify the Civil Registry with reference to his gender without the legal conditions that stipulated that he had to wait until he was 18.
Forklift kills man A 57-YEAR-OLD worker in the Basque Country has died after being hit by a forklift truck. The region’s Safety Department said medical personnel and a helicopter were sent to Mungia in Vizcaya Province after emergency services were alerted to a workplace accident. The forklift truck driver reportedly did not see his colleague because of the load his vehicle was carrying.

BAN SUPPORT: Opposition to trophies from hunting is widespread.
Support for trophy hunting ban ALMOST two thirds of the British public support a ban on trophy hunting, according to a new survey. The Survation poll found 63 per cent of respondents wanted the sport to be banned. Around three quarters supported blocking the imports of animal body parts from hunting to Britain, the same poll reported in the Daily Mirror found. It comes as the Born Free animal rights charity said about 2,500 trophies were shipped to Britain from 2008 to 2017.
Born Free’s head of policy Mark Jones said: “Trophy hunting is a cruel and damaging relic of a colonial era that causes immense animal suffering and disrupts wildlife.” Among the body parts imported were ones from 560 African elephants, more than 300 hippopotamuses and 265 American black bears. There were also almost 100 Nile crocodile parts and 80 from African lions, according to the charity. Environment Secretary Michael Gove said he would not hesitate to act if there was a case for a ban and called for evidence to be presented.

Jamie Oliver’s restaurant collapse THE eye-watering figures of celebrity chef Jamie Oliver’s ‘Jamie’s Italian’ restaurant chain have been revealed. The closure of 22 out of the 23 Italian restaurants has left the chef with losses of around £25 million. In May this year, the company announced
that it will be closing the doors to its flagship restaurants, leaving over 1,000 staff without employment. Jamie used £1 million of his own personal funds to pay the wages of the staff who lost their jobs, and used £18 million of investment from his personal holding account com-
pany, Jamie Oliver Holdings, to inject into the business. These personal investments were bolstered by creditors including HSBC who reportedly put forward a staggering £39.4 million in secured loans. He has currently paid the UK bank back a
total of £4.7 million and has made assurances for the remaining balance. Jamie will now be focusing on his new chain of healthy deli takeaways situated in international airports around the world, the latest of which opened in Malaga airport this year.

A HEATWAVE in Britain which has seen temperatures rise to up to 37 degrees could put asthma sufferers at risk of ‘deadly’ attacks, according to medical experts. Asthma UK’s clinical head Dr Andy Whittamore said a ‘toxic cocktail’ of hot humid weather and rising pollen levels made conditions for those with asthma ‘extremely hazardous.’ “Hot air and hay fever can cause people’s airways to narrow, leaving them struggling to breathe, with symptoms like coughing, wheezing, a tight chest and breathless-
‘Deadly’ asthma attacks warning ness,” Whittamore said. It comes as Britain’s Met Office has forecast temperatures as high as 37 degrees in the southeast of England today (Thursday, July 25). Those temperatures could break the record for the hottest day in July, according to the Met Office. An ‘African plume’ which is moving over Britain from the south is said to be the
cause of the heatwave. England’s Chief Nursing Officer Ruth May said: “It’s really important to take simple precautions like drinking plenty of water, using high-factor sunscreen and remembering to take allergy medication if you need it.” Some 5.4 million people have asthma in Britain, according to Asthma UK.

The bank said around 810,000 jobs would be created if their forecasts are accurate and that the unemployment rate could fall to 12.2 per cent by the end of 2020.

It comes after the tax formed part of the left-leaning Partido Socialista’s (PSOE) government’s draft budget plans which failed to pass last year. Funds save Dia THE Dia supermarket chain has avoided technical bankruptcy after creditors agreed to restructure its debts. The company reached an 11th-hour deal to get a €490 million loan from its new owners LetterOne, owned by Russian tycoon Mikhail Fridman. The funds were used to pay off bonds ahead of a deadline on Monday. Dia finance head Enrique Wickert said the funds meant the company now had an ‘adequate and solid’ financial structure. New liquidity lines of €280 million have also been opened, with €80 million going to suppliers. The bailout follows €144 million losses in the first quarter of 2019.

Youth wages at 1990’s levels YOUNG workers without qualifications are now earning the same as their counterparts did in the 1990s and make less than a decade ago, according to the Bank of Spain. Spain’s central bank, which carried out a study on earnings during the past 30 years, said young unskilled workers experienced the biggest drop in income. The study focused on salary purchasing power, factoring in inflation.
Bank Governor Hernandez de Cos said each generation saw earnings rise up until the 2008 financial crisis, when wages for all began to drop. High unemployment, a fall in working hours and the rising costs of rent all contributed to the fall. The study also found the average Spanish worker was 13 per cent poorer due to the recession which began after the crisis.

Tax evasion list ruling SPAIN’S Constitutional Court has agreed to admit a list of suspected tax fraudsters as evidence in an evasion sentence appeal hearing. The Constitutional Court ruled the so-called Falciani list was legitimate evidence. It includes the names of some 13,000 people who allegedly stashed money in the Swiss subsidiary of British bank HSBC. The court ruling follows an appeal from engineering entrepreneur Sixto Delgado de la Coba after he was jailed for six years for stashing some €5.2 million in the bank. Delgado appealed the sentence claiming the use of the list violated his right to the presumption of innocence. The Constitutional Court’s ruling follows one from the Supreme Court which agreed to admit the list as evidence in February 2017 when it was probing tax evasion. More than 500 Spanish taxpayers were convicted after their names were found on the list and probed by the Tax Agency. Falciana came to Spain after stealing the list and the National court has twice turned down extradition requests from Switzerland.

Spending warning THE public spending watchdog of Spain has warned the city councils of Madrid, Cordoba and Las Palmas de Gran Canaria after their spending rose by more than 10 per cent. The Independent Authority of Fiscal Responsibility (AIREF) said the increases were well above those allowed by local and regional spending rules. Tenerife’s island council was also warned about its spending. AIREF has called for regional authorities to intervene and for the budgets to be revised, either by cutting spending or increasing taxes. The body has also recommended controls be placed on several councils which plan to increase spending by 8 per cent. These include Almonte, Jaen and Jerez de la Frontera. It also called for the Spanish Treasury to take action against the regional authorities of Madrid, Navarra and the Canary Islands because of the high growth in their unfunded spending. AIREF also singled out the regions of Aragon, Cantabria, Castilla-La Mancha, Cataluña, Extremadura, Murcia and Valencia for planning to spend above legal limits. Green light for buyout SPAIN’S National Securities and Market Commision (CNMV) watchdog has approved a bid from the Asset Management and Industrial Machinery (GAMI) holding company to take over General Machinery Rental (GAM) for €1.72 a share.

LEAPY LEE SAYS IT OTHERS THINK IT FIRSTLY let me thank all of those who responded to my ‘What If’ Party manifesto last week. So many concurred with my views I almost (but not quite!) considered registering as a contender for number 10. (Yeah yeah!). What did surprise me was that for about the first time in my 30 years of column scribble, I actually received not one single missive of dissent. It probably shows how desperate we all are for a bit of common sense, which was basically all the piece was about. ‘Fraid it’s all a pipe dream though folks. A couple of recent events show that we are all still at the mercy of the lunatics, who are surely now firmly in charge of the asylum. Does anyone remember Roy Larner? Roy was one of the heroes of the London Bridge terrorist attack. When the incident took place, Roy, who was having a beer on the terrace of one of the bars, launched himself at one of the aggressors and received eight knife slashes and a painful stint in hospital for his brave efforts. Hailed by the public as the ‘lion of Millwall’ Roy was accredited with possibly having saved even further injuries or deaths occurring during the attack. Surely now was the time to present this man’s remarkable courage with some form of official recognition? Wrong. In a move that is almost beyond belief (although in this day and age, noth-

ing surprises me!) the authorities have decided to actually place Roy himself on the anti-terrorist watch list! Apparently, he cried out the name ‘Millwall,’ his favourite football team, as he launched into his counter attack; therefore they consider that he may now be the one who should be watched and even have to attend de- radicalisation classes. In the words of the great John McEnroe, surely they can’t be serious? Does this mean they are going to attempt to ‘deradicalise’ all the football fans that support the
clubs of the UK? Well good luck with that! Can you imagine how many of the anti-terrorist brigade it would take to arrest all the Liverpool fans chanting ‘Come on you Reds’ on a Saturday afternoon? Give us a break. For the sake of sanity, honour this brave man with the medal and recognition he deserves. What on Earth has happened to our values when we reward our heroes with persecution? Winston must be positively spinning! Sometimes I really do despair of it all. The second bit of time wasting,
brain numbing nonsense that emerged this week, was the usual suspects wingeing and whining that the choice of a black woman to play a white cat in the new film version of ‘Cats’ was racist! Is that pathetic or wot? I’ve actually discovered a new ploy. Whenever I hear one of these individuals call someone a racist, in my mind’s eye I substitute the meaning of the word to ‘patriot.’ The level of satisfaction is wonderful - and it makes far more sense. DEAR Ed Aren’t guests from home horrible? We recently had some who came to us, knowing we had dogs, then moaned for the week that they didn’t like dogs and shoo’ing ours away. We had another couple who would make themselves three of four cups of tea in our kitchen, every morning and wouldn’t even offer to make us one. Another just left the air-conditioning on for the week, and in return for his free holiday bought us a menu del dia for the princely sum of €8.50 each. Big deal. Then we had other guests whose dietary requirements left our kitchen smelling like a greasy spoon, all they wanted were good old fashioned fryups and then they complained that they only liked back bacon, as we only had streaky! If you see a tourist at the airport, walking funny with a bit of streaky bacon hanging from the rear of his shorts, please tell him he left his sunglasses by my pool. D Clarke

Not very welcome DEAR Editor Last year, I stayed on holiday in the beach area of Oliva. Lovely apartment, nice beach, great food etc. But I do not speak Spanish and I never read a newspaper on holiday, so I was in blissful ignorance of what was going on that weekend, I was there. I got up early as I could not sleep in the high temperatures and decided to go for a tranquil stroll on the beach. BRITAIN and Spain are going through some of the biggest political changes in recent months. Britain got a new prime minister this week just over three years after Theresa May took over from David Cameron. Meanwhile here in Spain, acting Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez’s future was by no means secure as he faced lawmakers in the investiture vote which began with debates on Monday. Changes at the top in both countries come on the back of years of political upheaval, uncertainty and impasse. Brexit has swept away all other issues to become the certain and at many times sole political issue confronting Westminster. But considerable opposition to Britain’s departure from the EU and a delicate parliamentary situation has meant a solution has eluded lawmakers since the referendum in 2016. Numbers in Spain’s Congress of Deputies leaves Sanchez and his left-leaning Partido Socialista (PSOE) in a similar predicament. Despite winning almost double the seats of their rival the conservative Partido Popular (PP) in April, PSOE still fell well short of a majority. Those results produced the protracted coalition talks with the leftist Podemos and this week’s uncertain investiture vote. Uncertain times make for interesting news. But while we focus on what happens in the corridors of power, we cannot forget their impact on ordinary people, including expatriates. We hope that whatever the future holds London and Madrid will continue to look out for the interests of expatriates.

WITHOUT wishing to be unduly unkind, Madrid’s new mayor Jose Luis Almeida resembles the slightly challenged stooge in a comedy duo. Time will tell what kind of mayor he turns out to be, but he wasted no time in trying to undo Manuela Carmena’s legacy. The courts reversed the PP-controlled city hall’s attempt to cancel the Madrid Central traffic fines introduced to reduce air pollution, but Almeida revealed recently that private conversations with Madrileños revealed they now experience ‘a certain feeling of insecurity.’ Fewer cars mean fewer people on the streets, Almeida claimed, conveniently ignoring the fact that at least Madrid’s air is comparatively breathable. Ever flown over Madrid on a clear day in the past? You never knew it, because you couldn’t see it, although it’s easier to make out now. But hey, the right wing, bless them, love a bit of pollution, makes them feel they’re doing things the right way.

Permission to pull the plug THERE are one million signatures on an online petition in favour of euthanasia, enough to demand a parliamentary debate. According to a recent poll, 80 per cent of Spain’s population would like to see euthanasia de-penalised. Unfortunately, the remaining 20 per cent are falling into the old Spanish trap of assuming that what isn’t prohibited is compulsory and are beginning to make so much noise that the entire 80 per cent will hardly be heard. PEDRO SANCHEZ is joined by the PP’s Pablo Casado in wanting to introduce legislation giving the most-voted party the automatic right to govern. It’s hardly a revolutionary fix and already exists in democratic countries like Denmark. Former president Mariano Rajoy claimed the legitimacy of this stance to demonstrate in December 2015 and June 2016 why he deserved to be Spain’s president. Pedro Sanchez felt differently in October 2016 when Rajoy desperately needed to survive an investiture debate. Sanchez maintained that being the most-voted ‘was not synonymous with a majority.’ His ‘No means no’ temporarily made him an outcast, but now he is in the same position as Rajoy and repeating his predecessor’s argument. Just shows what a difference a taste of power and the keys to the Moncloa can make.
Where are their brains? MIKE SENKER IN MY OPINION Views of a Grumpy Old Man IT’S the silly season and we know it’s important for Spain to have a strong tourist trade and, for many years before I moved here, I was someone who always came here for holidays with my family. What I’d like to know is what happens to some of these visitors the minute they land? They seem to ditch their brains and manners at the luggage reclaim. Why would you want to bring wine and beer bottles down to a swimming pool and proceed to drink from the bottle in the pool and then get all aggressive when asked not to? I mean is it unreasonable to point out if the glass gets broken in the pool nobody can use it? The list is endless. Staying on the terrace of your apartment ‘til 5am making so much noise that nobody can sleep. Getting home at 3am then clip clopping around in your shoes, (mostly ladies this one) and then deciding to rearrange every chair by dragging it across the floor. All I’m saying is be a bit
considerate and if something is said, just stop for a second and think about apologising instead of taking it as a challenge for a fight. We also have a couple of apartments we rent and some of the things our renters come up with are jaw dropping. One phoned this week at 11pm to tell us that the frying pan was too big and could we get them a smaller one because the big one took longer to cook things. Or how about the one that left the keys in the lock inside and wanted us to pay for a locksmith to let them back in and retrieve the keys. One of my favourites is the couple that called at 3am because the electric had tripped. As I recall, I wasn’t that polite to them. And, of course, the ones that, although they are told to lock up properly, don’t. They leave windows open when they go out. They don’t read all the information and advice they are given and then wonder why their passports, money and other valuables, left on view, get nicked by a crafty little thief that is just waiting for the usually very intelligent individual to get his holiday brain on and to forget everything he would normally do when leaving his own house. Keep cool TEMPERATURES are soaring and the heat can cause significant health problems so it’s extremely important to take care of yourself and those around you. Here are some tips for looking after yourself this summer: • Drink more water than usual and d o n ’ t wait until you are t h i r s t y. E x p e r t s r e c o m mend that you should be drinking almost three litres of water per day as a woman and almost four for a man. • Avoid alcohol. Alcohol is a diuretic, so you will lose more water content from your body when you drink alcohol, so no matter how lovely that ice-
cold beer or gin and tonic looks, try and keep them to a minimum. • Take a cool shower or bath. This will lower your body temperature, but cool rather than cold, gradual cooling down the body is far better for you. • Use air conditioning or a fan. Enjoy salads and cold food or a nice refreshing icecream. • Avoid exercise during the hottest time of the day, including doing chores or work. SWIMMING is highly regarded as a great way to exercise and keep fit, particularly as it is a ‘gentle’ exercise that does not put too much pressure on the joints and legs. For those that have pools, they might not be large enough for a proper swim, so maybe we should consider incorporating aqua-aerobics into our fitness regimes. Exercising in the water is good for reducing arthritis and other joint pain and the water acts as a form of resistance, so strength exercises can be performed in the water without heavy weights. Aqua-aerobic exercise can help increase flexibility, balance and decrease bone and muscle loss. Here we suggest some exercises you can do in any pool,
and you do not need loud, music or anybody shouting at you. The exercise regime can be as simple as jogging on the spot or through the water from one side of the pool to the other. This exercise can also be simplified to walking back and forth in the pool. Aqua jogging will get the heart rate up and keep it up and is the perfect aerobic exercise to get the heart pumping and blood flowing throughout the body. Another exercise using the resistance of the water, leg lifts, work all of the muscles in the legs. For this exercise, stand in the pool and lift one leg out to the side and back down. Repeat until your leg feels tired, then switch legs and perform the exercise on the other leg. Not only does this exercise work the
legs, it also improves balance and strengthens your core. Water push-ups are a great way to build arm, chest, and shoulder strength. Stand along the side of the pool and place your hands a little wider than shoulder-width apart on the edge of the pool. Bend your arms and lean in towards the wall, then push yourself back out. For the more energetic, jumping jacks activate the muscles in your arms and legs while incorporating a leaping motion to get your heart rate going. Stand in chest level water with your feet together and your arms at your side. Simultaneously bring your legs apart and your arms over your head as you jump in the air. Then, jump again and return your

According to a Charities Aid Foundation study, the proportion of Brits who donate to charity has fallen for the third year to 57 per cent. UK charities are struggling to recover from a series of scandals: senior Oxfam aid workers paying survivors of the 2010 Haiti earthquake for sex, Save The Children covering up sexual harassment of staff by executives and a ‘toxic working culture’ at Amnesty International. And betrayal of trust is one of the hardest things any person or institution must face, so much harder to repair when lost or stolen than any material goods.

Are there special rules for long-term rentals? As the wife is very sick, moving to another place would be hard. Review Kia XCeed THE Kia XCeed is a new urban crossover utility vehicle (CUV) from Kia Motors that is said to combine the functionality of a compact SUV with sporty proportions and will be manufactured at the company’s European factory in Žilina, Slovakia, from the third quarter of 2019. The vehicle will come with a guarantee of seven years or 150,000 kms. The elevated body and driving position give the vehicle a very attractive robust image for the traditional buyer of an SUV. An infotainment system with ‘floating’ touch screen stands out in the dashboard, which, lower down, has a series of buttons, indicators and switches for controlling the volume of audio, heating and
ventilation. This has been designed to allow the driver to make quick changes, without having to look away from the road more than necessary. Based on the Ceed, one of the most spacious vehicles in its category, the Kia XCeed offers great roominess for the front and rear passengers. The title looked to be a foregone conclusion. However, the reigning champion, Irishman Jonathan Rea, was always closely on his heels, never finishing any lower than third place. Rounds five, six and seven would see Bautista rack up three more victories but also three crucial DNFs,
