LIGHTNING looks to have been the spark which set off a major wildfire in Terque at the weekend. The blaze broke out in the Loma de los Pollicos area in the early hours of Saturday morning during an electrical storm, Andalucia regional Agriculture and Sustainable Development minister Carmen Crespo told press. The Andalucia Plan Infoca firefighting service reported the blaze had been contained by early Sunday evening. By this time the flames had scorched at least 1,200 hectares in Terque, Huecija, Bentarique, Illar, Instincion and Enix. On Saturday over 120 firefighters, backed up by 22 helicopters and aircraft, including five fire extinction planes, battled to bring the blaze under control on steep, very dry terrain, in high temperatures and with gusts of wind of up to 25kms per hour. Infoca had to call in reinforcements from as far away as Jaen and Granada, and as a precaution police and Guardia Civil evacuated 12 people from their properties on Saturday night. “prevented greater damage.” Also on Saturday a second fire broke out in Dalias. Plan Infoca reported the fire was extinguished by 10pm.

NEWS EXTRA Small shakes THE National Geographic Institute registered a tremor six kilometres down measuring 2.0 on the Richter scale in Tabernas on Sunday evening. There were three small tremors in the Alboran sea off the Almeria coast over the weekend.
Rescue tally MARITIME RESCUE picked up some 130 people trying to make it to the Spanish mainland from two small boats in the Alboran sea on Friday, taking them to Almeria port. Four of the immigrants were children.
Lost legs VANDALS have broken off the lower parts of the legs of the statue paying homage to immigrants in Almeria’s Calderon Plaza. The statue has been vandalised several times since it was unveiled in 2014.
Turtle death A DEAD loggerhead turtle appeared on Costacabana beach in Almeria on Sunday. The Equinac marine life rescue association reported the creature was missing part of its nearly 70cm-long shell and its two back limbs.
Narco building raid GUARDIA CIVIL seized nearly 2,500 marihuana plants in a massive raid on a so-called ‘narco block’ in Roquetas de Mar. More than 80 officers took part in the operation, backed up by Guardia Civil helicopters. They discovered 10 different properties had been converted into illegal plantations. This was a sophisticated setup. The plantations were kitted out with complex electrical installations and drip irrigation systems. There was even programmed music, in the belief, the Guardia said, this would promote plant growth. The raid also uncovered 120 illegal connections to the power supply and 20

Hospitality sector attacks ‘pirate’ celebrations THE ASHAL Almeria hospitality sector association has called for an end to what it dubbed ‘pirate’ celebrations. The association wants local councils and administrations with responsibility for health, tourism, employment and taxation to take action against the ‘proliferation’ of events staged in venues like rural properties and private homes which are not registered for this kind of activity and which do not comply with
current regulations. ASHAL claimed these celebrations represent ‘unfair competition’ for companies which do comply with legislation and a health and safety ‘risk.’ It is, ASHAL argued in a statement, an ‘irresponsibility to look the other way’ when there is noncompliance in terms of health, opening or activity licences, or when an enterprise is not paying the taxes it should. The statement went on to say that

hospitality sector companies see it as a ‘contradiction’ that businesses which ‘legally offer this service, pay taxes and comply with current rules, have inspections from the administration’ to check they are not breaking any rules while they are not taking action against those who ‘drop prices at the expense of not even registering.’ ASHAL warned it is prepared to launch a campaign of complaints ‘to eradicate all illegal activity.’
IT was third time unlucky for a thief who targeted the same victim three times in six months. Police arrested the suspect after the most recent attack, when the vi ct i m deci ded enough was enough. He told police he hadn’t gone to them before because he’d known the aggressor since they were chi l dr en and because he was aware he had a drug problem. He identified him as a 35-year-old who lived in his neighbourhood of Almeria City. The l ast t i m e t he m an st ol e f r om hi m , t he vi ct i m sai d, he grabbed him on his doorstep, saying, “It’s been a long time: I need you to give me some money or we’re going to have problems.” When the victim refused he became more aggressive and threatened hi m , f or ci ng hi m t o hand over all the cash he was carrying at the time. This followed a first robbery back in the winter, when according to the individual reporting the crimes, the 35-year-old grabbed €10 from him at knifepoint and then made him let him into his home, where he took more cash and a TV. On a second occasion, the vict i m r epor t ed, he was cycl i ng through the Zapillo area of the city when the now detained man asked him if he could take a turn on the €200 bike and promptly made off with it.

Beautiful contender THIS picture of Frigiliana comes as the Andalucian town is competing with 49 others to be named the most beautiful contender. Cadena Ser shortlisted Frigiliana along with others from across Spain to decide which town is the country’s best looking. Almeria’s Mojacar, Setenil de las Bodegas in Cadiz, Alicante’s Castell de Guadalest and Fornalutx in Mallorca were also chosen for the public vote. Frigiliana lies in the east of Malaga Province in the Axarquia region.
It covers an area of almost 40 square kilometres and is nestled between the mountains of the Sierra de Almijara range about 300 metres above sea level. The area has been inhabited since prehistoric times. The name Frigiliana is thought to come from a settlement named Frexinius built by the Romans. T h e i n v a d i n g Vi s i g o t h s d e s t r o y e d t h e t o w n ’s R o m a n f o r t sometime in the 5th century. It was captured by the Moors shortly after they began their invasion of the Iberian Peninsula in 711.

Several churches including that of San Antonio as well as the Palacio de las Condes were built after the Spanish captured the town during the Reconquista. Many of those monuments can still be seen in the town today which is now popular with tourists both from Spain and overseas. Frigiliana also holds several well-known fiestas including the Festival of the Three Cultures which celebrates its Christian, Jewish and Islamic heritage.
Illegal fish GUARDIA CIVIL reported a scuba diver for breaking six fishing regulations just off the Embarcadero beach in the Cabo de Gata Natural Park, including not having a licence, failing to indicate his location with an orange buoy and catching prohibited species or smaller fish than permitted.

ALMERIA police broke up a network dedicated to organising marriages and common-law partnerships between Spanish and EU citizens and nationals from other countries so the latter could gain legal status in Spain. Police arrested 12 people, including the organisation heads. Investigations revealed the network charged up to €6,000 to arrange the marriages and partnerships. Organisation members acted as intermediaries between foreigners looking to make their situation in the country legal and Spaniards or EU nationals, to whom they offered €2,000 or €3,000 for their part in the fraud. The network also paid property owners for enabling fraudulent residency registrations.
A SUSPECTED thief who pulled a knife on a man in the street is under arrest. Guardia Civil said the detention of PDS came after he tried to break into a vehicle in Roquetas de Mar. When the car owner surprised the would-be robber he pulled out a large knife from his jacket and began to threaten him. A Local Police patrol was rapidly on the scene and the aggressor cuffed. Guardia were already investigating the 41-year old as part of an operation in coordination with Roquetas de Mar Local Police to look into two house break-ins in the area. In both cases descriptions provided by witnesses pointed to PDS. He has now been charged with both robberies, the attempted theft from the car and for menacing behaviour with a bladed weapon in a public place.

Hope for end to ‘planning nightmare’ AUAN says BRITISH owners of irregular properties have reasons to be optimistic their ‘planning nightmare’ will come to an end, according to the AUAN housing association. At a meeting with British residents of Zurgena and Arboleas, AUAN lawyer Gerardo Vazquez explained new legal measures the Andalucia regional government is adopting which affect properties which fail to comply with current planning regulations. Vazquez outlined the importance of the Junta de Andalucia’s General Directorate of Urban Planning’s recent instruction, 6/2019. He said it is “aimed at allowing a way out for irregular houses already included in an unexecuted town plan, normally on unconsolidated urban land, via a permit known as an AFO.” An AFO permits owners to connect to available services like water and electricity and to register their homes. “Curiously,” AUAN said in a statement, AFOs are “already permitted for houses that have a greater environmental impact, ie those situated in a rural location and not destined to be incorporated into a municipal plan.” This measure is due to be followed by a decree, which could be approved in the com-

Vazquez also spoke about his “great personal satisfaction” when he “helped to put an end to the planning nightmare suffered by people from other countries who came here to buy a house and who were let down.” He cited the example of a British couple in their 80’s who just a few days earlier had at last been able to use an AFO to obtain the
deeds for their house “after 17 years of worry and anguish.” AUAN said it expected British homeowners who can now benefit from the Junta’s change in criteria will begin to submit requests for AFOs. AUAN president and planning struggles veteran Maura Hillen, who was also present at the meeting, confirmed this. “Those affected are looking at this possibility with great hope, and we are recommending they take up this opportunity and begin to act,” Hillen commented.

ALMERIA Port Authority has received 14 bids from companies to take on the second phase of renovation works on the old mineral loading platform on the city seafront. Once the winning bid has been chosen the works are expected to start shortly after, with a completion period of 15 months. Popularly known as the ‘Cable Ingles,’ the early 20th century iron structure is one of the p r o v i n c i a l c a p i t a l ’s most prominent landmarks. The plan is to convert it into a unique viewing point overlooking the sea and connected to the Parque de la Estacion and the old train station by the beginning of 2021. The public will be able to go onto the highest part of the platform and a walkway will be created along what used to be a railway track. At the end of last year the government allocated €2.2 million to the port authority for this phase of the Cable Ingles renovation project. The total budget adds up to over €3.1 million, including taxes, with the port authority’s contribution. The first phase of renovations were carried out between 2010 and 2012 with funding from the Development Ministry and the Andalucia regional government. The Cable Ingles was built between 1902 and 1904 by the Alquife Mines company in a project overseen by Scottish engineer John Ernest Harrison. The Junta de Andalucia awarded the structure ‘Cultural Interest’ classification in 1998.

Smoke-free beaches VERA’S beaches are now smokefree zones. The municipality has joined the Junta de Andalucia Health and Families’ Department Smoking Plan Network, which is running a campaign to raise awaren es s ab o u t to b a c c o us e a nd promote initiatives which create areas where smoking is not permitted. T h e id e a is to h elp pre ve nt people from taking up smoking a n d to as s is t an y o n e tr ying to kick the habit. A further advantage is that non-smokers will be not be bothered by smokers’ fags. The council hopes the beach s mo k in g b a n w ill a ls o me a n a cleaner coastline without the litter of cigarette butts. Cigarette ends take between five and 10 years to decompose, contaminating the sea and negatively impacting on marine life. The local authority has signed up Vera to the Andalucia Smoking Plan Network for the next four years. The council said the move demonstrated its “commitment to developing a common

Marihuana haul tripled ALMERIA and El Ejido police seized three times more marihuana in the first six months of the year than in the same period of 2018. Police confiscated nearly 18,500 marihuana plants adding up to a weight of 2,696 kilos of cannabis between January and June, up from just over 14,200 plants weighing 951 kilos in the same period last year. Police carried out more raids related to the cultivation, production and trafficking of drugs than last year: 89, as compared with 66 in the first half of 2018. There were also more arrests. The total number detained in marihuana-related operations over the first six months of 2019 was 152, while last year it was 116. In addition, this year’s operations led to the seizure of €63,000 in cash, 16 firearms and a range of other weapons. Another result was the dismantling of 505 illegal connections to the power supply, more than double the 212 discovered in the first six months of 2018. A police statement said in many cases it was family clans behind marihuana production and sale setups in the province, which made it more difficult for investigators to penetrate the organisations.

The council reported the 300 available places for three to 11-year olds had been well and truly oversubscribed, hence priority had been given to families where both parents work. Among the activities the 16 trained monitors lay on for the youngsters are workshops in art, dance, sport, science, storytelling, recycling and healthy habits, as well as all manner of games. The children are taken to different areas of the municipality, including the coast and the water park. In August the local authority is also operating a programme of educational and leisure activities aimed at teenagers.

Campsite plans PLANS for a new campsite in Albox look set to move forward following an absolute majority authorisation for the project from the three political parties represented on the local council. The project outlines the construction of a two-star tourism complex with capacity for 275 people on a site in Paraje de la Aljambra, four kilometres from Albox town. Facilities would include a reception,
bar-café, supermarket, laundry, bathrooms and swimming pool. A statement from the council said the promoter would invest some €340,000 in the project, and aims to have the campsite open for business at the beginning of next year. The council statement maintained the project would have ‘social and economic benefits,’ and would mean ‘the creation of more direct and indirect jobs.’

PLAY and leisure projects for children in Vera are allowing parents to enjoy ‘me-time’ on the beach and helping more than 300 local families balance working life demands with the challenges presented by the lengthy school summer holidays. Vera Council’s Youth and Childhood Department is running its free ‘Explayate’ initiative for three to 16-year olds from Las Marinas and El Playazo beaches morning and early evening, daily throughout July and August. The councillor heading the department, Ana Lourdes Ramirez, said it was “gratifying to see how the children are playing and having fun in the open air with the different activities which we offer while the parents can enjoy our beaches in peace, knowing their children are entertained and very well looked after by our personnel.” The councillor revealed plans were afoot to shortly launch ‘Explayate Urbano’

Clean coast appeal ADRA Council has called on the public to keep the coast clean. Launching the ‘Your beach cleaner thanks to you’ awareness-raising campaign aimed at getting people to look after and respect the munic ipa l c oa s tline, Adr a Mayor Manuel Cortes appealed to residents and visitors to do their bit. It is for “everyone’s benefit”, Cortes said, “both from the environmental and the aesthetic point of view.”
He also said it was a wide-ranging initiative, aimed at reaching the greatest possible number of people. As part of the campaign the local authority is distributing foldable cardboard rubbish bins, cones for cigarette butts and 25,000 paper bags for sunflower seed hulls for beachgoers. The council has also produced a promotional video which it will post on social media and which will be projected during summer cinema sessions.

DOUBLE PURPOSE: The provincial government said the competition promoted sport and physical activity as part of a healthy lifestyle while offering interesting events for residents and holidaymakers. FOUR locations are hosting the provincial government-organised open-water swimming challenge over the next four weekends. The Almeria Council’s OpenWater Provincial Circuit competition starts this Saturday, July 20 in Carboneras. Mojacar will host the event the following Saturday, July 27, followed by Garrucha on August 3 and Balengra on August 10. The Diputacion de Almeria said the initiative has the double purpose of encouraging the public to make sport and physical activity part of a healthy lifestyle and of
providing local authorities with interesting events for residents and tourists over the holiday season. Sports deputy Angeles Martinez said the provincial circuits form p a r t o f t h e a d m i n i s t r a t i o n ’s ‘Almeria, play clean’ initiative, which aims to “promote positive values like solidarity, strength, sacrifice, desire for self-improvement and teamwork,” especially among schoolchildren. “ T h e r e s u l t i s s e c o n d a r y. T h e important thing is that swimming enthusiasts take part in regulated trials where the main objective is
to have a good time, and if possible, enjoy sport as a family,” the deputy commented. She also underlined the administration’s priority of linking sport and tourism in the province. She described Almeria as “one of the best places in the world to practise sport in the open-air in spectacular natural environments,” adding, “it is a great added value which we offer visitors and Almerians.” The open-water circuit features a number of different categories for children and adults, the distances adapted to different ages.

Investing in city heritage THE provincial government is investing €5 million in the second phase of restoration works on the only 16th century civil building still standing in Almeria City, the old Hospital Provincial. The building is set to become the first Spanish Realism museum in the country. The administration said it was currently taking on the second phase of the restoration project alone as it was still waiting for a subsidy promised by the national government in 2018 under the previous Popular Party administration. Almeria provincial council President Javier A Garcia described the works as “the most important heritage renovation project which is going to be carried out in Almeria.” Garcia said it will “revolutionise culture in the city and province.”

THE Turre sewing circle is one of the Costa Almeria clubs which does not take a break for the summer. Organised principally by Selina Smith and fellow circle members, Selina’s sister Gloria Bishop and Ruth Stubbs, the sewing group has some 30 members. They get together every Wednesday morning, yearround, at Turre’s evangelical church to sew, knit, embroider, cross stitch, crochet and make lace. They share ideas, advice and chat in a creative, convivial atmosphere, and produce some exquisite work. Primary school improvements THE El Argar primary school in Antas is set to undergo more than €40,000 of repairs and improvements funded by the Andalucia regional government. The Junta’s Education Department has allocated the works contract to the company Construcciones y Proyectos Mediterráneos Ortiz SL. The three-month project will include reforms to the four toilets in the main building, upgrades to water and drainage systems and the replacement of floor tiling.
THERE is something for everyone this summer in Mojacar Pueblo. The local council has put together a packed programme of events designed to appeal to all ages for the peak holiday season. Tomorrow (Friday July 19) the popular Anabel Veloso returns with her flamenco spectacular in the Plaza Nueva at 10pm. The following Friday there will be a performance by students from Conchi Lopez’s Garrucha Dance School at 10pm at the same venue. Mojacar ’s own town band will also have a chance to show off their skills in a concert at the Plaza del Parterre, on Wednesday July 31 at 9pm. This year’s summer programme features plenty to keep the youngest members of the family fully entertained. Youngsters have an opportunity to meet much-loved TV and film stars at the Plaza Nueva on the evening of Monday July 22, with the added attraction of inflatables and fun games. The following Monday, July 29, children’s favourites like demolition ball, bouncy castles and fun road safety circuits will be set up from 7pm at
the same spot. Further activities aimed at children include the musical ‘Villanos’ today (Thursday) and the ‘Indalo’ puppet show on Saturday, both starting at the Plaza Nueva at 9.30pm. The movie Hotel Transilvania 3 will be screened at 10pm on Sunday at the Plaza del Fronton. The ‘Unicorns’ parade at 9.30pm next Tuesday July 23 will start from the same place. THE WEEK IN POLITICS TALKS between the leftleaning Partido Socialista (PSOE) and the leftist Podemos appear to have reached an impasse as the deadline for a vote on Spain’s new government looms. Several meetings between PSOE leader and acting Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez and Podemos head Pablo Iglesias have failed to bear fruit. Sanchez called on Iglesias to put aside their differences and agree to give PSOE Podemos’ backing in an interview with the TVE channel. Igelsias said in a separate interview the Spanish had given Spain’s main leftwing parties a mandate to “share power and responsibility.” Between them the two parties have 165 seats in the Congress of Deputies, 11 shy of the 176 needed for a majority. The chief sticking point remains the extent to which Podemos could influence government policy as a junior

DEADLOCK: Sanchez and Iglesias are struggling to see eye to eye. partner in the arrangement. Sanchez and PSOE would ideally like to see Podemos lend its support to the larger party’s agenda. This is in keeping with a trend in Spain’s democratic history which has seen PSOE subordinate smaller left parties to its agenda. Previous incarnations of leftist parties have functioned as an outsourced radical van-
guard but one ultimately serving PSOE’s interests. But Iglesias has seen an opportunity to get himself and other leading Podemos figures spots in Spain’s national government for the first time in the party’s young history. The long-term goal would be to bag Podemos achievements in government which it could then pitch to voters, repairing the damage done at
the last election when it haemorrhaged votes. Sanchez’s only viable prospect of returning to power is with Podemos’ backing. Mathematics said yes to a deal with the centrist Ciudadanos. But its leader Albert Rivera was quick to rule it out as he strives to build its strength as an opposition force to the right of centre. A PSOE-Podemos pact is further complicated by it not giving the two an absolute majority. The situation reflects the fragmented nature of Spanish politics which has nearly swept away the twoparty system which gave PSOE and the conservative Partido Popular (PP) a duopoly on power. The parties have until Monday to strike a deal. An investiture vote on naming Sanchez prime minister is scheduled for the start of next week.
Undoing a legacy THE new conservative Partido Popular (PP) and centrist Ciudadanos administration in Madrid City Council has begun dismantling initiatives and policies brought in by its leftist predecessor. The new administration in Spain’s capital, which is headed by PP Mayor Jose Luis Martinez-Almeida and his Ciudadanos deputy Begoña Villacis, abolished the city’s low emissions zone. The zone, brought in by the administration of former Mayor Manuela Carmena, was designed to curb pollution and traffic. They have also closed the Office of Human Rights and Historical Memory. The office was tasked with informing the public about the impact of the Spanish Civil War and dictatorship of Francisco Franco on Madrid. Madrid Deputy Mayor Villacis said the policies being ditched were those which served no purpose or had failed. But Rita Maestre, a spokesperson for Carmena’s Mas Madrid, said the moves were based on ‘ideological sectarianism.’ “It is an administration which does not build, but is dedicated to undoing what others did before,” Maestra said. Ramon Silva, a left-leaning Partido Socialista (PSOE) councillor, said the decisions showed the PP and Ciudadanos were in a ‘mad race’ to please the far-right Vox. Vox backs the new administration but does not have any council posts.

Economic reforms THE Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), an international forum which promotes economic growth, prosperity and sustainable development, has made a number of recommendations for the Spanish government in its biannual report. The OECD report highlights that the economic reforms carried out in Spain in the period 2017-2018 have been ‘limited’ and that Spain still has a significant distance in GDP per capita with respect to the richest OECD countries, due to lower productivity and higher unemployment. The report recommends that Spain should increase fuel tax to better reflect the pollution caused; eliminate reduced IVA rates on products that favour higher income earners, should cut the tax contributions for workers with low salaries and fixed contracts and implement improvements in education and increased spending on innovation, research and development. The report stresses that ‘improving labour mobility and access to Vocational Training would reduce inequalities in the labour market and boost skills.’

The Acting Deputy Prime Minister Carmen Calvo believes that the government has a strong argument for reclaiming the palace as it is in possession of documents that would appear to place the ownership of the potential heritage site in the hands of the public. The palace has historical
importance and could generate public income from tourism as it was the home of famous writer Emilia Pardo Bazan. It is currently up for sale for more than €5 million. Earlier this year the Spanish government issued a plan to exhume Franco’s remains from his tomb in the ‘Valley of the Fallen’ which is considered to be a fascist monument. However in June the Supreme Court suspended the motion due to appeals from Franco’s family.

Raise fuel taxes call AN international body has called for Spain to raise taxes on fuel to combat polluting emissions. While recognising that the country is better than average for CO2 emissions, the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) says it is one of the advanced economies which collects the fewest green taxes. The Spanish government had planned to raise diesel taxes, but this was not approved in the budget.

Prisoner deaths on the increase LAST year 210 prisoners died in Spanish custody, 63 more than in 2017. O f thos e , 154 inma te s died inside prisons, while the rest passed away in hospitals. The data was provide d follow ing a que s tion from Bildu MP Jon Iñarritu, who requested figures for the past two years and the
causes of death. Nearly 30 per cent of these deaths (61 people) was due to drug abuse. This is the figure which has risen the most when compared to 2017, with the number of deaths due to drugs being 28. Half of the deaths, 105, were due to natural causes and another four from HIV.
Blood sucking fly spreading THE blood sucking fly, known as the ‘mosca chupasangre’ is apparently spreading across Spain due to hot weather conditions and causes an intense sting and painful itching that can last for weeks. The Mancommunitat de la Ribera reported that these bloodsucking flies can travel more than 20 kilometres in one flight. They said: “actions against the outbreak must be done in a global and coordinated manner.” People who suffer from the bite may need medical attention. According to the National Association of Businesses, this summer will be full of mosquitoes, wasps, cockroaches and flies with temperatures reaching above 40 degrees in some Spanish towns. The area of the River Ebro is most affected by the blood-sucking fly and has broken records due to the outburst and fast growth. The La Ribera Consortium began aerial treatment against the fly around the river Júcar.
There were 33 suicides, 30 occurred in prisons. Badajoz prison, with four suicides, had the highest number of deaths from this cause. By total number of deaths, the Andalucian prisons of Puerto 1, Puerto 3 and Sevilla-Morón are the ones which lost the most inmates, 35 in total.

Christian Fundamentalist group ‘One Million Moms’ have slammed the latest Disney movie. Their uproar is over the accusation that Disney is ‘pushing an agenda of normalisation.’ The anti-LGBTQ organisation have become outraged over screen time that amounts to a few seconds. The lesbian, bi-racial couple are seen in the background dropping off and picking up their son at Kindergarten. The lesbian couple has no lines in the entire movie. One Million Moms believe that Disney kept the scene under wraps on purpose so that they could expose as many people as possible. A spokesperson for the Christian Fundamentalist group, Monica Cole, said: “It was a noticeably small scene with the sole purpose of attempting to normalise this lifestyle. Not to mention there was also a brief comment made about not hiding in a closet. Some children may not catch this reference, but it was extremely unnecessary as with the lesbian couple.”

Singer loses legal battle A 20-YEAR legal battle regarding a paternity suit against the Spanish singer Julio Iglesias has reached a Valencia court, and last week a Judge ruled that he considered the claimant to be the singer’s son. According to reports, he ruled that Javier Sánchez Santos, aged 43 years, is the son of Iglesias, who did not appear in court. The Judge took into account that Sanchez was born just nine months after Maria Edite, Santos’ mother, and Iglesias had a relationship, the physical resemblance to the singer and the alleged father's refusal to undergo DNA tests. The determination of this matter is not final and can be appealed before the Provincial Court of Valencia.
Brexit causes shortage of drugs for local pharmacies ACCORDING to a report from the Spanish Agency for Medicines and Health Products, pharmacists in Malaga Province are facing shortages of some 550 different drugs. The problem occurs in the situation where there is no alternative drug, so effectively it is the most modern pharmaceuticals which are still under licence which are the most difficult to replace at the moment.The three most important drugs which are in short supply are Kreon which is used for those with pancreatic problems, Hemovas used for those with
poor circulation and Dalsy which is especially useful for children with fever. Even certain strengths of some of the more common drugs such as paracetamol have been in short supply and doctors are now finding patients returning to their surgeries for advice if the prescribed drug is not available. Manufacturers are being blamed for not forecasting the demand for these drugs and also for going where the money is, by supplying Britain which is paying higher prices as it stockpiles certain drugs in case of Brexit shortages.

Organ donation LIVING in Spain can bring with it an array of issues which may not have been encountered when living in the UK. There are lots of things to consider, and we are here to help try to make the transition and life in Spain a little easier by compiling a series of helpful facts and figures relating to a variety of topics. As of 2010, Spain has operated an ‘opt-out’ (or presumed consent) system for deceased organ donation. This addresses the rate or refusal of potential donors or their families in giving permission for the use of organs. The rate of family refusal in Spain is 13 per cent, compared to 37 per cent in England (according to the National Transplant Organisation figures - ONT). According to the ONT, Brits living in Spain are more likely to donate their organs than their countrymen back home. It’s not necessary to have a donor card. What is important is to let family members and loved ones know your wishes in terms of organ donation. Figures published by the Spanish ONT in 2017 put the country as world leader in donation and transplants, reaching a new record with 46.9 donors per million people and 5.261 transplants. Spain has been a global leader in organ donation and transplantation for the past 26 years. Broken down by organ, there were 3,269 kidney surgeries (up 9 per cent on 2016), 1,247 liver transplants (up 8 per cent), 304 heart procedures (8 per cent rise), 363 lung surgeries (up 18 per cent), 70 pancreas transplants (down 4 per cent) and eight bowel surgical procedures (up 100 per cent). According to the National Transplant Organisation (ONT), these surgeries are equivalent to six donors and 14 surgical procedures a day. In addition, Spain saw a new record in bone marrow donation last year, with 78,291 new donors and an increase of 196 per cent over the previous year. At this rate, the country could reach its target of 400,000 bone marrow donors well before the mid-2020 goal. In Spain the number of those on the waiting list was reduced to 4,896 in 2017, from 5,480, although the number of children waiting for organs increased to 74, from 48 a year earlier. Lung and heart are viable for 4-6 hours after death, liver and pancreas 24 hours, kidney 72 hours, corneas 14 days, bone and skin five years, and heart valves up to 10 years. Small intestines, veins, tendons and ligaments can also be donated. A single organ donor can save up to eight people and a single tissue donor may enhance the lives of up to 50 people. Bad bank must pay up PEOPLE who were persuaded to swap preferred shares and subordinated debt for ordinary shares in ‘bad bank’ Bankia are entitled to compensation. which was accepted by the company. In October and November 2013 the company sold the Bankia shares, obtaining only €115,225. A lower court decided that the company was not entitled to compensation as the financial instruments it had held originally were essentially worthless anyway, so no new loss had occurred. The Supreme Court disagreed and ordered compensation be paid. This serves as a test case which all lower courts must follow from now on.

The centre will work closely with local universities and training colleges to educate and develop technology professionals. Mercedes Oblanca, managing director of Accenture Technology Iberia said: “This new Advanced Technology Centre in Spain will enhance our ability to provide the capacity, speed and talent that our clients require to embrace new IT and advance their digital transformation efforts.” Accenture shares have gained 35.4 per cent so far this year compared to the 29.7 per cent rally of its industry sector.

Animal-free meat SPANISH company Biotech Foods is aiming to have lab-grown ‘meat’ being produced at production scale with full regulatory approval by the end of 2021. Co-founder Mercedes Vila said that the cost of producing a kilo of cultured meat is now about €100. Factory scale production would considerably lower costs, making it an economically viable addition to
the food market. A year ago, a cost of $800 (€710) a kilo was put on a similar product by Israeli biotech company Future Meats Technologies. Culture meat is grown in a bioreactor similar to those used to ferment beer. Stem cells from an animal’s muscle tissue are put in a culture medium and grow into the food product.

Strike called IBERIA workers at Barcelona’s El Prat airport have called a strike for July 27 and 28. It is in protest at what the 2,000 workers call an ‘overload of work and lack of personnel to meet real needs.’ In a statement the UGT trade union said that the company has systematically failed to comply with agreements previously reached with workers. These include the implementation of an industrial plan for the airport that allows the hiring of extra staff when current workers are ‘overloaded.’ It was the promise of such a plan that defused a called strike at this time last summer. The UFT said: “A year later the problems remain the same, with the worsening of the increase in workload compared to that time and the lack of solutions in terms of staff size.”

No tax ON APP: Madrid taxis are joining Cabify.
Cabify integrate taxis PEOPLE can now hire taxis in Madrid and Valencia through the Cabify mobile phone app. It has integrated 100 licensed taxis into its ‘fleet’ in Madrid and 10 in Valencia as it seeks to offer a whole range of road transport options from one app. People will be able to choose from VTC (private hire with driver as traditionally associated with the app) to taxis, motorcycles and scooters. When opening the application, the
user can choose between hiring a VTC or a taxi. If the latter is chosen, the user will be given an estimated price of their journey, but the final price will be according to the meter. The VTC option gives a set fare immediately. Taxis that have joined the platform will not carry any special badges and, when not contracted by Cabify, will be able to pick up passengers on the street like any other taxi. Cabify estimates that taxi drivers will see an increase in turnover of be-
tween 25 per cent and 30 per cent, by increasing the number of journeys they make and minimising empty mileage. The Spanish-owned company has carried out a pilot in Santander before commercially launching the taxi app in Madrid and Valencia. In the Cantabrian capital, where just three drivers joined, it has met with a hostile reaction from taxi organisations, but Cabify has decided to roll out the programme anyway.
SPANISH Finance Minister Nadia Calviño has said Spain is reluctant to follow the lead of France in introducing an eco-tax on air fares, as the country is so reliant on tourism and does not want to hit the sector.

Perhaps all the ‘usual suspects’ out there would like to offer something positive for a change, and let us all know what they themselves would put forward were they elected PM? I await the slings and arrows with bated breath! 1. All legal British citizenship applicants required to pass more stringent entrance examinations, including basic English, oral and written and knowledge of British history and culture. These examinations to be set and overseen by British nationals who have resided in the UK for at least three generations. 2. No child allowance for any offspring after the second child. 3. No free NHS for unregistered non-European nationals, except in dire emergencies. All recipients billed for services incurred. 4. Genuine asylum seekers capped at 5,000 per year. Only exceptional circumstances considered after this figure reached. 5. A restriction on numbers of specific religious buildings allowed per capita. 6. Rigorous inspections of schools suspected of disproportionate religious curriculums.

Racism etc. Heavy punishments for claims considered to be of malicious or frivolous content. 20. The hierarchy of the BBC dismantled, dismissed and replaced. 21. All historical criminal accusations against service men and women dropped. 22. MPs to attend the house for at least four full days a week except during canvassing periods. 23. All benefits completely cut for those who refuse offers of employment. 24. A force of highly trained specialised, armed rapid response police/army units with extra powers to be assigned to reported trouble spots. 25. Verbal abuse of police officers treated as seriously as physical attacks and heavy punishments for similar attacks on all medical workers. 26. Proven fake news in any form treated severely; with technical offences. Ie falsified derogatory statements appearing to issue from the mouths of politicians or leading figures, resulting in heavy fines and/or suspensions of media licences. 27. CIUDADANOS’ Ines Arrimadas wanted to demonstrate liberality by attending the parade that concluded Madrid’s Gay Pride week. This year’s celebration was already morphing into a demonstration against extreme Right-wing Vox’s attempts to undermine legislation guaranteeing the rights of Spain’s LGTB community. So instead of a welcome, Arrimadas and the Cs’ contingent were met by a group wearing the white headdresses of the enslaved women of the Handmaid’s Tale and wearing robes that were Cs-orange instead of red. It was a nice touch but less nice were the bottles, drinks cans and ice-cubes that allegedly rained on Arrimadas and her party in retaliation for Cs’ willingness to use Vox to inch their way onto councils and into regional governments. The parade organisers stressed afterwards that it did not condone throwing objects at anybody. “Obviously they could join the parade, like anyone else,” a

THIS week sees the 50th anniversary of the moon landing on July 20, 1969. Like other past memorable events, did you happen to catch it? I was allowed to stay up all night to watch. The real giveaway it was no hoax was that the pictures were dreadful and started off upside down. Armstrong’s descent was virtually indecipherable, though when Buzz followed it was clearer. I recall the breathless excitement of James Burke and Patrick Moore making a huge effort to stay professional, and holding my breath in case Armstrong disappeared in the deep dust on the moon’s surface. So much packed into that magnificent night. For one brief moment, anything was possible. We, the human race, had reason to be proud and amazed. What technology, what skill, what daring! But how dispiriting that some still believe ridiculous conspiracy theories debunking the whole thing. Further, the community must show any form of payment to them on its books, with the appropriate withholding tax paid. This means your community is technically guilty of employing ‘black’ workers outside the tax system. In the worst case, this could draw penalties of €3,000 for each unregistered worker. Now, do not tell anyone that you read this here, but if the only record of your arrangement is the community list of payments, it seems very unlikely that the tax authorities will discover it.

Jackie Groundsell travelled from the UK to spend two days with staff in Fuengirola at the invite of EWN CEO Michel Euesden. “I met Michel at the International Women’s Day conference in Marbella in March, a collaborative event between Costa Women and 1230 TWC, and we built up a relationship from there,” explained the mother of three who launched the leading business women’s network in 2002. Jackie added: “We spent a day together here in Spain in May. We got on really well and have taken it from there, so when Michel invited me back to Spain to spend a couple of days in the head office to develop business together, I jumped at it. “It shows how technology has opened up the world. There are very few boundaries to achieve whatever you want to achieve. The first link with Ali Meehan of Costa Women was through Twitter and from there the connection with Michel was through technology. “When I first walked into the EWN office I was taken by the impressive structure visually. Everybody works extremely hard here and the office has a very nice feel about it. “As a company EWN is certainly well established and will definitely continue to grow.” Jackie explained how 1230 The Women’s Company (1230 TWC) provides on and off-line trading and business growth opportunities

It’s all a long way away from Jackie’s first reluctant taste of networking having been dragged to her first all women’s meeting 18 years ago. “I was teaching businesses in computer skills at the time and never thought about networking. I knew I didn’t like coffee mornings and that sort of thing, but I went along to a meeting in London with a friend Penny who I had

met through a business course. What an amazing eye opener it was. “I had done the Chamber of Commerce but that was really male dominated at that time. This was totally difference. There were 27 women who didn’t know each other but met at lunchtime, shared a drink and talked and at the end it felt like we had known each other for years.” Jackie began sharing an office in the capital for her own IT train-
ing company, and her own network of all-female support grew quickly and organically; an everincreasing number of women who worked in the city, getting together for lunch once a month to chat and support each other in business. “I was a business advisor for the then Bromley Chamber of Commerce and they asked us to help, so we had a meeting and 54 women turned up. Other women started asking if they could run a
meeting and we soon realised we had to have a more organised approach and the business was born. “Given that many business women are squeezed at either end of the day with family commitments, lunch-time meetings proved to be the most convenient time of day for m a n y, h e n c e t h e name 12.30. “Being able to see the synergies and connect businesswomen, to see the ‘eureka!’ moment that 1230 TWC training and networking provides as their businesses grow, is so rewarding; I am exceptionally fortunate to be in a business that I just love.” Jackie said that meeting her various personal challenges in her own life has given her great empathy with the inspiring business women she meets and supports through networking. “I would say my can-do attitude and ability to talk are two of my greatest personal assets. I’m always up for a challenge!” added Jackie who continues to run her IT training company as part of 1230 Business School as well as public speaking. “I look forward to seeing everyone on March 12 and 13, 2020.”

I WAS shocked to read the issue talking about solidarity with the ‘LBGTQI’ community. As a lesbian I do not feel part of this ‘community’ as our interests are not the same and in the case of the T diametrically opposed. We do not believe that men can change sex or vice versa. Men who perform femininity are not countering stereotypes and instead are pandering to fetishes. There is huge pressure from trans activists to access women only spaces, single sex hospital wards, prisons, refuges and changing rooms. Women feel unsafe as a result... selfidentification allows any male who says he feels like a woman to overrule their wishes. I was particularly surprised to read that Andalucía is being praised for allowing children to choose their ‘gender’ before puberty and receive hormonal treatment to suit their preferred role. In my and many others view, this is a dangerous practice and basically amounts to experimentation on confused adolescents. The research that exists suggests that outcomes are poor eg the young people’s distress is no better, and children should not be able to give consent to life changing and damaging medication. There is a huge increase in girls who feel different and confused and instead of receiving adequate counselling, they are put on a path to irreversible treatments and mutilation of their bodies by mastectomies and unproved hormones. These girls often have other issues such as autism or may have been sexually abused. Many would have become lesbians and nearly all are likely to desist if given time. Andalucía should not be proud of their position on this. There is a huge scandal building on this and it is shameful that this ‘tolerant’ society is doing the enabling. Yours sincerely F Gillard
The beauty of Benidorm I RECENTLY visited the town of Benidorm and after the town being rubbished by all and sundry, particularly in the tabloid press, I was expecting the worse. But on my arrival, I found a warm, clean and inviting town and to my surprise, there were many Spanish on holiday there. Yes, there were the Karaoke bars, kebab shops and tourist tat stalls, but look a bit deeper and it is actually a really nice place. Martin Scoles

ALLEGATIONS that a British tourist assaulted medical personnel makes for worrying reading as cases of patients harming doctors and nurses continue to rise. The British man’s alleged assault, in Mallorca’s Magaluf resort, comes as a local trade union representing medical staff said it was the fifth such attack in a week. The attacks have not just been confined to Mallorca. One assault took place at a clinic in San Pedro de Alcantara on the Costa del Sol earlier this month. Trade unions across Spain have called for more to be done to protect staff. A total of 28 personnel were attacked in Malaga Province alone, according to data from the area’s Medical Association. Cases sometimes involve patients brought to hospital under the influence of alcohol or drugs. Others are simply instances of wanton aggression. But as with many things the attacks themselves do not constitute the problem on their own. Such violence is symptomatic of deeper issues. Many hospitals across Spain are overstretched and understaffed because of the exodus of staff to other countries and spending cuts. Limited numbers of staff trying to manage and treat patients, many of whom arrive in emergency rooms frustrated and unable to act reasonably, clearly contributes to the phenomenon. That said, everyone has the right to work in dignity and without fear from threatening or violent behaviour. There is no justification for such attacks.

Spanish police called to flight: Why is it always the English groups who make these problems on the way to Spain and not the other way around? Same with balconing. Nadia TB Earlier this year we had a hen and a stag on the same flight. Reasonably well behaved, but the noise was awful with much shouting, back and forwards. Had to calm down the lads in seats behind due to my kidneys getting a work over. Flight attendants did a fairly good job and limited alcohol to one drink each. place a tremendous burden on the body - in particular, the liver. And it is imperative that the liver is kept in good working order as it is this hard-working organ that is responsible for not only breaking down the poisons that find their way into our body, but for disposing of naturally-occurring waste products such as ammonia and bilirubin. If the liver’s detoxification pathways are impaired, compounds that cause inflammation, the first step towards illness, can end up circulating around the body again. This can cause systemic inflammation and immune system reactions, setting the scene for autoimmune disease, leaky gut and food sensitivities. Clearly, when it comes to avoiding chronic disease, the importance of keeping your liver healthy and in top condition can’t be overstated.

Spicy Cilantro Prawns with Honey Lime Dipping Sauce

QUICK LUNCH: Delicious, light and speedy, it takes around 10 minutes to prepare, cook and serve!
SOMETIMES here at Olive Tree Farm, time gets a little tight! With the hot weather we are now experiencing, extra caution is being taken to ensure the animals are checked every couple of hours and water is topped up. They get through an alarming amount of water, especially the pigs, who love to tip the dishes over to make a bud bath. All this takes us time and energy which means making a complicated lunch is the last thing I want to do. Here is a delicious, light and speedy lunch to make, which takes around 10 minutes to prepare, cook and serve! Although the dip recipe calls for using sour cream, we are fans of Greek yoghurt and it works perfectly. If you are using fresh prawns, you need to remove the dark vein (dirt sack) which if left in spoils the sweetness of the prawns and contains grainy bits of sand. To do this, twist off the head of the prawn, remove the rest of the shell including the tail end shell, run a sharp knife down the back of the prawn to reveal the vein, and then gently pull it out. If it breaks and you are struggling to get hold of it, use a cocktail stick to flick it out. It’s fiddly, but well worth effort.
OLIVE TREE FARM was set up about four years ago with the intention of achieving a level of self sufficiency. We have poultry for meat and eggs, goats for milk, rabbits and small pigs for meat and harvest our 70 olive trees each year for oil. We also grow a variety of fruits and vegetables.
For the prawns 1 teaspoon paprika 3/4 teaspoon salt 1/2 teaspoon cumin 1/8 teaspoon cayenne pepper 1/8 teaspoon ground cinnamon 500g large raw prawns, peeled and deveined 1 tablespoon butter 2 tablespoons fresh lime juice
2 tablespoons fresh cilantro/coriander, chopped Method Combine the paprika, salt, cumin, cayenne, and cinnamon in a large bowl. Add the prawns and toss to fully coat the shrimp in seasoning. In a large frying pan, melt butter over medium-high heat. Add the prawns and cook about two minutes on each side. You’ll know the raw prawns are done when they turn pink and curl into a ‘C’ shape. Toss the prawns with fresh lime juice and cilantro/coriander and serve with Honey Lime Dipping Sauce. For the dipping sauce: 1 cup sour cream (I use Greek yoghurt) 1/3 cup fresh cilantro/coriander, finely chopped 2 tablespoons fresh lime juice 1 tablespoon honey 1 1/2 teaspoons grated lime peel 1/4 teaspoon salt Method Mix all the ingredients and chill until ready to serve with the Spicy Cilantro Prawns.

GUARDIA CIVIL detained a 21year-old on suspicion of stealing a motorbike from the back of a parked trailer in Tijola. The owner had transported the motorcycle from his home in Caniles in Granada after arranging a private sale of the machine to a person who lives in the town. When he arrived in Tijola he parked up at the bar where he had arranged to meet the individual who was going to buy the motorbike. That was when someone took the bike off the trailer, started it up and made off. The Guardia said investigations led to the arrest of ASC from Purchena less than a week later, reporting he had a record for similar incidents.

THE local council has revoked permission for a circus doing the rounds in the Almanzora Valley to set up their big top in the municipality in response to opposition from local youngsters to shows featuring animals. A group of teenagers got more than 300 signatures on their petition against the use of ‘live animals, outside their natural habitat and for financial purposes.’ Because the petition organisers were all under 16, a series of additional measures to protect the information gathered were necessary. “ I f e e l p r o u d o f o u r t o w n ’s young people because they have shown a capacity for organisation and immediacy which we really were not aware of,” commented Cantoria mayor Purificacion Sanchez in a statement. The council head stressed the circus in question had all its paperwork in order, but added, “if the kids, who are their main clients in the town, don’t want it, obviously we cannot go ahead.”

The mayor has also pledged to establish a means by which under-16’s can make their voices heard without conflicting with data protection laws. “Although this section of the population are not adults, this does not mean that we should not listen to them. Quite the opposite.”

Compare this to a city like Murcia, where you could expect to pay just over €1,000 per square metre. Generally the report highlights that Spain is a wonderful country for expats, but this view has to be tempered by the regional variations in employment, housing costs and personal requirements.

MOTORING MOTORING FACT DAVID GANDY, the British model recently commissioned Jaguar Classic to renovate an XK120 from the 1950s to his own personal specifications. In a statement, Jaguar detailed how the 11-month project took 2,700 hours to complete. The brief was to make this car race-ready for classic motorsport events such as the Jaguar Classic Challenge and to make it suitable for use on the road. “Having driven a Jaguar XK120 at the Mille Miglia in 2013 and 2014, I knew that I wanted to own one of these incredibly special cars. The team at Jaguar Classic have done such a remarkable job engineering this car and executing everything that I asked for and it was amazing to have such an in-depth involvement in its creation.” A suitable 1954 base car was found in California and the engineering team at

Electric cars are not a new thing; they were already being manufactured in 1905. Rauch & Lang produced electric cars until 1920.
Jaguar Classic creation Jaguar Classic retained many components of the original car. The in-line six-cylinder engine was rebuilt over five and a half months. The result is a performance upgrade from the original 180bhp output to 225bhp and enhanced durability for higher speeds, with items like the core plugs featuring
steel bracing so they do not dislodge during high-speed and hard driving. Further improvements include the use of a faster-shifting racing-style gearbox which is more durable under high stresses and uprated brakes, with the front set-up now featur-
ing disc brakes with four-pot calipers, while the rear retains the original refurbished drum brakes. The suspension features fully adjustable dampers, allowing Jaguar’s engineers to fine-tune the handling for specific events. The design and finishing touches were created in collabo-
ration with Gandy, who chose the colour and materials used in the renovation. The exterior is finished in solid black, made up of 13 litres and four coats of paint, while additional exterior features include a racing-inspired flip-top fuel cap. The original split-screen windscreen has been replaced by twin aero screens, another feature synonymous with the
XK120 Lightweight. Inside, the car is totally unique. Finished in an Aged Saddle tan leather, the seats feature a bespoke lattice design with the seatbacks finished in aluminium rather than the usual fabric material. Whilst two batteries would usually sit behind the driver’s seat, for this car the Classic team put a single battery behind the passenger seat to free up space behind the driver, to enhance comfort for 6’ 2” tall Gandy. This was also a consideration when selecting the steering wheel, which is smaller than normal, again, to provide more legroom.

LEWIS HAMILTON has won the British Grand Prix at Silverstone to write himself into the record books. Starting from second on the grid, he took advantage of a slice of luck to get past teammate Valtteri Bottas. He took advantage of a safety car to pit as the other cars slowed, which allowed him him to re-emerge still in the lead. He never looked back, with a flawless drive until the finishing line. Bottas was second in the race, with Charles Leclerc in
third. Pierre Gasly, Max Verstappen, Carlos Sainz, Daniel Ricciardo, Kimi Raikkonen, Daniil Kyvat and Nico Hulkenberg completed the top 10. The gap between Hamilton and Bottas in the overall standings widened to 38 points. It is Hamilton’s 80th career victory and his sixth at the British Grand Prix, making him the most successful driver at the race. Jim Clark and Alain Prost have five wins each. He now has seven wins from 10 meetings and Mercedes have been beaten only once this season. Speaking after the event Lewis Hamilton said: “I remember my first win here in 2008 and the feeling that I had coming out of Brooklands and

New Zealand had looked to be about 20 runs light at the end of their innings, but an impressive bowling display saw them pull England back. A tricky pitch where the ball didn’t ‘come on’ made ‘heavy scoring’ difficult. England fell one run short and so the match was tied, and had to go to a tie breaker which England won. New Zealand had to score 16
runs in six balls, but they couldn’t quite make it tying with England again, but losing on boundary count. England lived up to their pretournament billing of tournament favourites and strung together a sequence of performances when they needed to. They had managed to get themselves into the position of having to win their last four matches to take the trophy for the first time. England went into this tournament as overwhelming favourites, and having enjoyed
perhaps the most dominant run any side has had leading up to a World Cup ever. In the span of four years, England had gone from a mediocre one-day outfit without direction to an invincible line-up of worldbeaters. Even so, this was far from a perfect campaign for the home team. But that blip itself was integral to them further evolving and proving why they are truly the top one-day side in the world. England began as people expected them to, with a big win
over South Africa in the tournament opener. They even put behind an unexpected defeat to Pakistan in their second game quickly to pick up wins over B a n g l a d e s h , We s t I n d i e s a n d Afghanistan. But then, Jason Roy injured his hamstring, and in his absence, England lost to Sri Lanka, in what was the upset of the tournament, and then Australia. As a result, they were left with must-wins against India and New Zealand - two teams they hadn’t b e a t e n a t a Wo r l d C u p i n 2 7
years. But Roy returned, and with it, England rediscovered their winning ways, putting up strong totals against both teams to qualify for the semi-finals for the first time since 1992. They destroyed Australia at Edgbaston to set up a final date with New Zealand and won, stunningly, on a boundary count after tying New Zealand in both the allotted 100 overs, as well as the Super Over to cap off the greatest final in tournament history with a maiden triumph.
