THE owner of the land where two-year-old Julen Rosillo died after falling into a well now faces a jail request from the Attorney General of Malaga that he be sentenced to three years in prison. David Serrano received the request under the charge of serious reckless homicide as it is claimed he was fully aware of the presence of the well but made no effort or attempt to make it safe. Julen Rosillo made headlines last January when during a family picnic in the area, he fell down the unattended well. A huge rescue mission took place and his plight captured the hearts of the nation, who were religiously checking for updates on his condition. Eventually on January 26 he was found lifeless 110 metres down at the bottom of the well. The boy’s parents maintain they had no knowledge of the well on the land and that David Serrano was the only one there who knew of its existence. According to the accusation brief, David has been requested to complete a three-year prison sentence as well as paying compensation to the family for damages and losses caused.

Missing new mum Dana THE latest revelation in the hunt for missing Romanian woman Dana Leonte suggests she and her partner reported a break-in at their home on the day of her mysterious disappearance. New mother Dana went missing between June 12 and June 13 from her home in the Arenas area of Malaga which she shared with her partner, 37year-old Sergio Ruiz, and their sevenmonth-old daughter. Reports claim the 31-year-old returned home from her shift at a bar she owned in Velez-Malaga to find the garage door had been tampered with. She contacted her partner who returned home from work and called the

aid repairs and even car adaptation is covered. Travel expenses are also included for those who need to commute to and from care centres. The Councillor for Soc i a l R i g h t s a n d E q u a l i t y, Víctor González has expressed his support of the initiative and also points out that local Social Care is also permitted to distribute the grants, meaning anyone interested doesn’t have to travel long distances to organise the programme.

The pair went to the police station to denounce the incident and according to reports they had suspicions that the perpetrator was a member of the family. After leaving the police station they returned home, and Sergio then travelled to Velez-Malaga to confront the family member. It was during this time WhatsApp messages were exchanged between Sergio and Dana, before communication suddenly stopped. Guardia Civil officers are still combing the area in search of Dana who has been missing for over a month.

Green light for Arenas THE small town of Arenas has finally been given the go ahead to turn an area of land on the Hill of Bentomiz into a modern hotel and residential complex. The project had hit a standstill for more than a decade after the previous socialist government in the area blocked the proposed €60 million investment. However the new mayor of Arenas, Manuel Ríos (PP) along with the Ministry of Development, Infrastructure and Planning have lifted the complaint and given the project the green light.

Quake hits AN earthquake measuring three on the Richter Scale has been recorded in the Almachar region last Thursday (July 11). According to reports from the National Geographic Institute, the quake hit at just after 4pm and was measured at around 52km under the ground.

Path delay A GROUP of protestors formed on Saturday at Chilches train station in protest of the delays in the construction of the Litoral path that will link the towns of Chilches and Benajarafe. The project has been subject to nearly four years of government delays.

THE councillor for Fairs and Festivals, Lola Gámez has revealed the person who will be given the privilege of opening the festival. Beautiful contender THIS picture of Frigiliana comes as the Andalucian town is competing with 49 others to be named the most beautiful contender. Cadena Ser shortlisted Frigiliana along with others from across Spain to decide which town is the country’s best looking. Almeria’s Mojacar, Setenil de las Bodegas in Cadiz, Alicante’s Castell de Guadalest and Fornalutx in Mallorca were also chosen for the public vote. Frigiliana lies in the east of Malaga Province in the Axarquia region.

It covers an area of almost 40 square kilometres and is nestled between the mountains of the Sierra de Almijara range about 300 metres above sea level. The area has been inhabited since prehistoric times. The name Frigiliana is thought to come from a settlement named Frexinius built by the Romans. T h e i n v a d i n g Vi s i g o t h s d e s t r o y e d t h e t o w n ’s R o m a n f o r t sometime in the 5th century. It was captured by the Moors shortly after they began their invasion of the Iberian Peninsula in 711.

Several churches including that of San Antonio as well as the Palacio de las Condes were built after the Spanish captured the town during the Reconquista. Many of those monuments can still be seen in the town today which is now popular with tourists both from Spain and overseas. Frigiliana also holds several well-known fiestas including the Festival of the Three Cultures which celebrates its Christian, Jewish and Islamic heritage.

Bike meet THE sixth annual meeting of the Peña Motera Sexitana took place in La Herradura last weekend, where 2,000 avid motorcyclists turned up to celebrate the gathering and were greeted with complimentary food, shirts and prizes, DJs and live music as well as a pool to cool off in.

Flamenco fest FAMOUS Flamenco dancer Raimundo Benítez opened this summer’s seventh Flamenco Cycle ‘Ciudad de Almuñecar’ on Saturday to celebrate a season of spectacular flamenco shows across the town. The hugely popular festival will continue until the final show which takes place on August 24.

Boy saved from drowning in pool LAST Wednesday (June 10) a three-year-old boy was saved from drowning thanks to the quick actions of the pool’s lifeguard and an off-duty policeman. The incident happened at the town pool located on Avenida del Sol in the Los Geraneos urbanisation. Initially the Local Police received a call Wednesday afternoon that a boy was lifted out of the pool, unconscious, by the pool’s lifeguard and was receiving treatment. The lifeguard performed CPR on the boy and an off-duty police officer who was bathing at the time carried him to the Regional Hospital of La Axarquia close by. Emergency services met the pair on entering the hospital and immediately transferred the boy to the emergency room where according to local reports he is doing well and out of danger.

Beach investment THE popular beaches of La Herradura and Almuñecar have benefited from increased investment by the acquisition of three new machines dedicated to the treatment of the sand. The three new tractor units have been provided by local contractor FCC to maintain the quality and condition of the beach areas. The machines will operate from now until August 15 and will now work seven days a week, for four hours every morning to prepare the sandy areas for the day ahead. Councillor for Beaches and Tourism, Daniel Barbero presented the machines, along with a project to invest funding into the construction of new foot bridges and customer facilities along the coastline during this summer. He also announced that he is currently negotiating with the contractor to extend the lease period of the machines for 2020 with the aim to ‘eliminate steps or relocate catwalks as soon as possible.’

Renovations for Nerja landmark CONTRACTS for the renovation of Nerja’s famous Balcon de Europa have been put out to tender as part of an urgent project to improve the safety of the town’s iconic landmark. The first part of the project will be to replace the missing and broken balustrades with a contract valued at over €86,000 funded by the Ministry of Tourism and Sports of the Junta de Andalucía. The Councillor for Tourism of Nerja, Gema García, insisted on the importance of the urgency of the works to be carried out, stating that the specific area has the highest influx of tourists in the area so safety is paramount. Interested contractors will have 15 days to respond to the project for work to be carried out as soon as possible. Garcia insists this is only the first step in a complete renovation of the Balcon de Europa to ensure the town of Nerja stays popular as a tourist destination.

REOPENED: A fishing boat drags its nets along the coast of Malaga.

Fishing ground reopens in Malaga THE Junta de Andalucia has reopened the coquina and shellfish fishing ground between Malaga and Rio Velez after it was closed due to abnormally high traces of E.Coli. The Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Sustainable Development has reopened section AND208 after a second analysis of specimens taken from the waters have shown that the levels of the bacteria are well within safe parameters. The Malaga district contains nine fishing

areas, AND301 to AND309, with 308 being one of the most bountiful for shellfish and coquina. Local fishermen are currently under pressure as harvests are fetching as little as €11 per kilo, which many attribute to the legislation that they have to purge the catch for 24 hours before putting on sale. The reopening doesn’t affect however the Chirlas population, as the species has been protected since March this year due to the yearly quota being met for the year after just three months.

Gender violence stats THE Integral Service of Attention and Welcome to Women Victims of Gender Violence (IAM) has released its statistics for 2019 so far with a total of 147 people accessing its centre for treatment. This figure is a slight decrease since 2018 with 162 recorded in the same two quarter time period between January and June. The IAM centres include 90 beds and 40 rooms in emergency centres and shelters that provide urgent assistance 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. The slight decrease goes against the overall picture that the Andalucian stats provide. The Comprehensive Care and Welfare Service for Female Victims of Gender-based Violence has treated 1,409 people compared to 1,261 in 2018, meaning an increase of 11.73 per cent. The increase overall of treatments has been addressed by the councillor for Equality, Social Policies and Conciliation, Rocío Ruiz, who has vowed to increase budget to the sector for 2019.

Axarquia set for investment VELEZ-MALAGA has been given the go ahead for 22 cases of individual investment for the development of rural areas in the region. The Rural Development Group, Ceder has given the European investments worth around €960,000 the green light to help improve facilities of the area in various industries. The projects will focus on sectors such as the oil industry, energy saving companies, the improvement of agricultural operations, recycling, food processing, social training and youth work. A portion of the funding will come from the Junta de Andalucia whilst the majority of the funds will come from the European Fund for Rural Development. A total of 74 individual projects have been submitted for consideration for projects across the region’s municipalities.

Weather phenomenon THOUSANDS of residents across the Axarquia region were left cowering under air conditioning units last week as the nation’s heatwave gripped the country. However one day stood out in particular due to its overcast nature, yet searing temperatures. The weather effect that caused the strange condition is called Calima and it is formed when masses of hot air are blown across from Africa carrying a blanket of dust particles with it. This effect is not unique but is quite rare, said José Luis Escudero, an expert in meteorology in the province. The hot winds and overcast appearance can make the heat unbearable as invisible dust particles hang in the air and trap heat into the lower atmosphere. The region was also greeted with isolated ‘dry’ storms and slight spots of rain covering cars and homes in a fine layer of dust. Last month the entire region was put under an orange alert for its extremely high temperatures by weather agency AEMET. Velez-Malaga saw temperatures top 37 degrees Celsius, the sixth hottest recorded in Spain this year.

Cancer commitment VELEZ-MALAGA has once again played host to the Early Detection of Breast Cancer Programme by installing a detection unit on the promenade at Velez-Malaga train station. The councillor for Health and Consumption Víctor González, the coordinator of the programme Catalina Abraham and the director of the Clinical Management Unit Gema Mata all visited the mo-

The aim of the unit is to “raise awareness among the population that the most effective way to detect breast cancer early is to have regular mammograms, even if there are no symptoms,” explained Gonzalez. Leader of the programme Catalina Abraham said, “The main objective of the programme is to reduce the mortality of this type of cancer, improving the quality of life when it has already been diagnosed and treated after being detected in an initial phase.”

Brick Beach project legal THE controversial ‘Brick Beach’ project remains on course after the city council of Vélez-Málaga insists that the debris recycling plant to be built to aid the project has EU backing. Local residents and government officials from both PP and GIPMTM have opposed the planned construction of the plant next to the wastewater treatment plant. The mayor of Velez, María José

Roberto (PSOE), remains certain that the project has European backing and that the location has been chosen and confirmed by European technicians. The project, worth €5 million, aims to recycle illegal construction waste to rejuvenate the beach of Mezquitilla. The project will be mostly funded by community funds and will be backed by the Junta de Andalucia and

the University of Malaga. The proposed site will be around 700 metres from the nearest residential area, and local residents are also concerned about the disruption that will be caused by both the construction and the operating of the plant. PP and GIPMTM representatives although backing the project, have asked for a more suitable location to be considered.

Organ donation LIVING in Spain can bring with it an array of issues which may not have been encountered when living in the UK. There are lots of things to consider, and we are here to help try to make the transition and life in Spain a little easier by compiling a series of helpful facts and figures relating to a variety of topics. As of 2010, Spain has operated an ‘opt-out’ (or presumed consent) system for deceased organ donation. This addresses the rate or refusal of potential donors or their families in giving permission for the use of organs. The rate of family refusal in Spain is 13 per cent, compared to 37 per cent in England (according to the National Transplant Organisation figures - ONT). According to the ONT, Brits living in Spain are more likely to donate their organs than their countrymen back home. It’s not necessary to have a donor card. What is important is to let family members and loved ones know your wishes in terms of organ donation. Figures published by the Spanish ONT in 2017 put the country as world leader in donation and transplants, reaching a new record with 46.9 donors per million people and 5.261 transplants. Spain has been a global leader in organ donation and transplantation for the past 26 years. Broken down by organ, there were 3,269 kidney surgeries (up 9 per cent on 2016), 1,247 liver transplants (up 8 per cent), 304 heart procedures (8 per cent rise), 363 lung surgeries (up 18 per cent), 70 pancreas transplants (down 4 per cent) and eight bowel surgical procedures (up 100 per cent). According to the National Transplant Organisation (ONT), these surgeries are equivalent to six donors and 14 surgical procedures a day. In addition, Spain saw a new record in bone marrow donation last year, with 78,291 new donors and an increase of 196 per cent over the previous year. At this rate, the country could reach its target of 400,000 bone marrow donors well before the mid-2020 goal. In Spain the number of those on the waiting list was reduced to 4,896 in 2017, from 5,480, although the number of children waiting for organs increased to 74, from 48 a year earlier. Lung and heart are viable for 4-6 hours after death, liver and pancreas 24 hours, kidney 72 hours, corneas 14 days, bone and skin five years, and heart valves up to 10 years. Small intestines, veins, tendons and ligaments can also be donated. A single organ donor can save up to eight people and a single tissue donor may enhance the lives of up to 50 people. Several meetings between PSOE leader and acting Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez and Podemos head Pablo Iglesias have failed to bear fruit. Sanchez called on Iglesias to put aside their differences and agree to give PSOE Podemos’ backing in an interview with the TVE channel. Igelsias said in a separate interview the Spanish had given Spain’s main leftwing parties a mandate to “share power and responsibility.” Between them the two parties have 165 seats in the Congress of Deputies, 11 shy of the 176 needed for a majority. The chief sticking point remains the extent to which Podemos could influence government policy as a junior partner in the arrangement. Sanchez and PSOE would ideally like to see Podemos lend its support to the larger party’s agenda. This is in keeping with a trend in Spain’s democratic history which has seen PSOE subordinate smaller left parties to its agenda. Previous incarnations of leftist parties have functioned as an outsourced radical vanguard but one ultimately serving PSOE’s interests. But Iglesias has seen an opportunity to get himself and other leading Podemos figures spots in Spain’s national government for the first time in the party’s young history. The long-term goal would be to bag Podemos achievements in government which it could then pitch to voters, repairing the damage done at the last election when it haemorrhaged votes. Undoing a legacy THE new conservative Partido Popular (PP) and centrist Ciudadanos administration in Madrid City Council has begun dismantling initiatives and policies brought in by its leftist predecessor. The new administration in Spain’s capital, which is headed by PP Mayor Jose Luis Martinez-Almeida and his Ciudadanos deputy Begoña Villacis, abolished the city’s low emissions zone. The zone, brought in by the administration of former Mayor Manuela Carmena, was designed to curb pollution and traffic. They have also closed the Office of Human Rights and Historical Memory. The office was tasked with informing the public about the impact of the Spanish Civil War and dictatorship of Francisco Franco on Madrid. Madrid Deputy Mayor Villacis said the policies being ditched were those which served no purpose or had failed. But Rita Maestre, a spokesperson for Carmena’s Mas Madrid, said the moves were based on ‘ideological sectarianism.’ “It is an administration which does not build, but is dedicated to undoing what others did before,” Maestra said. Ramon Silva, a left-leaning Partido Socialista (PSOE) councillor, said the decisions showed the PP and Ciudadanos were in a ‘mad race’ to please the far-right Vox. Vox backs the new administration but does not have any council posts.

Time to die A WOMAN who went through a terrifying ordeal which ended with her boyfriend trying to kill her by driving off a steep embankment has seen him jailed for five years. Palma court heard that in the summer of 2017 the couple were driving on the Banyalbufar to Esporles road when an argument started. The accused, a 32-year-old Spaniard, is said to have stopped the car near the edge of a steep slope and shouted “It’s here, it’s time.” Alarmed, his victim jumped from the car and began walking down the road in search of help. But the convicted man caught up with her, strangled her, then forced the woman back into the car. He then went back to the embankment, accelerated and drove straight off, with the intention of killing his victim. They both suffered multiple injuries in the incident. As well as the jail sentence the man has had a 10- year exclusion order placed on him and been ordered to pay the victim €4,600 compensation for her injuries and the value of her car, which was written off.

Trade talk AN official advising the British government on trade negotiations has said the country’s influence could grow ‘rapidly’ while a cabinet minister cast doubt on a US deal materialising soon. Crawford Falconer, Britain’s chief trade negotiation advisor, said Britain had previously had ‘very little’ to say on global trade policy, but that could change once it leaves the EU. It comes as International Trade Secretary Liam Fox said a post-Brexit deal with the US may take longer to broker because of having to negotiate on a state level. Falconer told British media: “I always found it anomalous from the outside that the world’s fifth largest economy, as Britain has always been, really had very little to say on the international trade system. “That is changing rapidly now and will change ever more rapidly.” Falconer is charged with putting Britain on a trade negotiation footing in preparation for it leaving the EU. He has implemented a programme to recruit and train thousands of negotiators who can be sent across the world to strike deals post-Brexit. Falconer’s comments come as Fox said Britain should try to secure a deal with the US as quickly as possible. But different regulations in different states means the deal will either take longer to reach or only cover certain areas, he added.

Rhetoric rebuke By Joe Gerrard CAMPAIGN pledges made by the two Conservatives vying for the party leadership and British premiership received rebukes this week. Both former Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson and current office holder Jeremy Hunt have sought to play down the negative impact a nodeal Brexit would have on Britain’s economy. A central plank of both their campaigns has been to reopen talks with the EU to secure further concessions from Brussels that Prime Minister Theresa May could not. The so-called Irish backstop remains a key target among other measures. Current frontrunner Johnson has also made leaving the EU on Thursday October 31 a priority. He recently referred to it as a matter of life and death. But hopes from both that the changing of the guard with new appointments to senior posts in Brussels could change the bloc’s tone were dashed at the weekend.

Brit ‘assaulted medics’ A BRITISH tourist has been arrested after he allegedly tried to attack an ambulance crew who were bandaging his bleeding hand. The incident happened at about 6am when medics were called to treat the man, who was described as drunk or intoxicated by drugs, after he apparently cut his hand when smashing a

shop window in the Plaza Fornes in Magaluf, Mallorca. As they tried to help him, it is alleged he threw several punches but failed to land any. He then ran away with Guardia Civil and Local Police in hot pursuit. They caught and arrested the man.

AN anti-LGBTQ group has called for Toy Story 4 to be boycotted because of their inclusion of a lesbian couple within their latest movie. Christian Fundamentalist group ‘One Million Moms’ have slammed the latest Disney movie. Their uproar is over the accusation that Disney is ‘pushing an agenda of normalisation.’ The anti-LGBTQ organisation have become outraged over screen time that amounts to a few seconds. The lesbian, bi-racial couple are seen in the background dropping off and picking up their son at Kindergarten. The lesbian couple has no lines in the entire movie. One Million Moms believe that Disney kept the scene under wraps on purpose so that they could expose as many people as possible. A spokesperson for the Christian Fundamentalist group, Monica Cole, said: “It was a noticeably small scene with the sole purpose of attempting to normalise this lifestyle. Not to mention there was also a brief comment made about not hiding in a closet. Some children may not catch this reference, but it was extremely unnecessary as with the lesbian couple.”

Prisoner deaths on the increase LAST year 210 prisoners died in Spanish custody, 63 more than in 2017. Of those, 154 inmates died inside prisons, while the rest passed away in hospitals. The data was provided following a question from Bildu MP Jon Iñarritu, who requested figures for the past two years and the

causes of death. Nearly 30 per cent of these deaths (61 people) was due to drug abuse. This is the figure which has risen the most when compared to 2017, with the number of deaths due to drugs being 28. Half of the deaths, 105, were due to natural causes and anoth-

er four from HIV. There were 33 suicides, 30 occurred in prisons. Badajoz prison, with four suicides, had the highest number of deaths from this cause. By total number of deaths, the Andalucian prisons of Puerto 1, Puerto 3 and SevillaMorón are the ones which lost the most inmates, 35 in total.

Blood sucking fly spreading THE blood sucking fly, known as the ‘mosca chupasangre’ is apparently spreading across Spain due to hot weather conditions and causes an intense sting and painful itching that can last for weeks. The Mancommunitat de la Ribera reported that these bloodsucking flies can travel more than 20 kilometres in one flight. They said: “actions against the outbreak must be done in a global and coordinated manner.” People who suffer from the bite may need medical attention. According to the National Association of Businesses, this summer will be full of mosquitoes, wasps, cockroaches and flies with temperatures reaching above 40 degrees in some Spanish towns. The area of the River Ebro is most affected by the blood-sucking fly and has broken records due to the outburst and fast growth. The La Ribera Consortium began aerial treatment against the fly around the river Júcar.

A helping hand BETWEEN July 5 and 8, officers of the National Police in Sevilla helped to distribute food for the needy weighing 48,000 kilos. The distribution of this food, which is undertaken on an annual basis, is organised by local residents who belong to the Tres Bar-

rios Association in the east of the city using funds partly supplied by the European Union. In the past, the bulk transportation of the food was carried out using a lorry borrowed from the Red Cross, but on this occasion as the driver had retired,

the Association asked whether the National Police in the area would be able to assist. O ff i c e r s i n d i c a t e d t h a t they were happy to do so as part of their support for the local community and spent four days arranging for the movement of the food.

WOODLAND DESTROYED: The fire spread rapidly to nearby trees.

Wood cutters ‘caused blaze’ TWO woodcutters have been reported for allegedly negligently starting a forest fire that destroyed 10 hectares of woodland in Spain. The fire in the El Higueron area of Benalmadena (Malaga) broke out in the yard of a firewood company on June 13, before rapidly spreading to nearby trees. A police investigation has

concluded that the blaze was caused by the negligence of two people working for the company. Although the main activity of the company is the handling of combustible materials, it did not have any measures to prevent the spread of a fire, such as fire extinguishers or firewalls. This allowed the flames to spread

to the woodland. Strong winds fanned the fire, and the billowing smoke meant the main A7 road had to be closed off in both directions for several hours, with long tail backs both on the A7 and the alternative coastal road. The police report has been handed to a Torremolinos court.

Border issue UK Chancellor of the Exchequer Philip Hammond has used historic Spain/ Gibraltar border delays as a warning of what may be in store after a no deal Brexit, saying France could choose not to ensure smooth customs for political reasons.

Animal-free meat SPANISH company Biotech Foods is aiming to have lab-grown ‘meat’ being produced at production scale with full regulatory approval by the end of 2021. Co-founder Mercedes Vila said that the cost of producing a kilo of cultured meat is now about €100. Factory scale production would considerably lower costs, making it an economically viable addition to

the food market. A year ago, a cost of $800 (€710) a kilo was put on a similar product by Israeli biotech company Future Meats Technologies. Culture meat is grown in a bioreactor similar to those used to ferment beer. Stem cells from an animal’s muscle tissue are put in a culture medium and grow into the food product.

Strike called IBERIA workers at Barcelona’s El Prat airport have called a strike for July 27 and 28. It is in protest at what the 2,000 workers call an ‘overload of work and lack of personnel to meet real needs.’ In a statement the UGT trade union said that the company has systematically failed to comply with agreements previously reached with workers. These include the implementation of an industrial plan for the airport that allows the hiring of extra staff when current workers are ‘overloaded.’ It was the promise of such a plan that defused a called strike at this time last summer. The UFT said: “A year later the problems remain the same, with the worsening of the increase in workload compared to that time and the lack of solutions in terms of staff size.”

No go CLOTHES retailing giant Inditex has won a legal battle to protect its Zara brand name after an EU court annulled a decision to register Zara Tanzaniya Adventures as a trademark for travel and tourism services.

No tax ON APP: Madrid taxis are joining Cabify.

Cabify integrate taxis PEOPLE can now hire taxis in Madrid and Valencia through the Cabify mobile phone app. It has integrated 100 licensed taxis into its ‘fleet’ in Madrid and 10 in Valencia as it seeks to offer a whole range of road transport options from one app. People will be able to choose from VTC (private hire with driver as traditionally associated with the app) to taxis, motorcycles and scooters. When opening the application, the

user can choose between hiring a VTC or a taxi. If the latter is chosen, the user will be given an estimated price of their journey, but the final price will be according to the meter. The VTC option gives a set fare immediately. Taxis that have joined the platform will not carry any special badges and, when not contracted by Cabify, will be able to pick up passengers on the street like any other taxi. Cabify estimates that taxi drivers will see an increase in turnover of be-

tween 25 per cent and 30 per cent, by increasing the number of journeys they make and minimising empty mileage. The Spanish-owned company has carried out a pilot in Santander before commercially launching the taxi app in Madrid and Valencia. In the Cantabrian capital, where just three drivers joined, it has met with a hostile reaction from taxi organisations, but Cabify has decided to roll out the programme anyway.

SPANISH Finance Minister Nadia Calviño has said Spain is reluctant to follow the lead of France in introducing an eco-tax on air fares, as the country is so reliant on tourism and does not want to hit the sector.

Perhaps all the ‘usual suspects’ out there would like to offer something positive for a change, and let us all know what they themselves would put forward were they elected PM? I await the slings and arrows with bated breath! 1. All legal British citizenship applicants required to pass more stringent entrance examinations, including basic English, oral and written and knowledge of British history and culture. These examinations to be set and overseen by British nationals who have resided in the UK for at least three generations. 2. No child allowance for any offspring after the second child. 3. No free NHS for unregistered non-European nationals, except in dire emergencies. All recipients billed for services incurred. 4. Genuine asylum seekers capped at 5,000 per year. Only exceptional circumstances considered after this figure reached. 5. A restriction on numbers of specific religious buildings allowed per capita. 6. Rigorous inspections of schools suspected of disproportionate religious curriculums.

All historical criminal accusations against service men and women dropped. 22. MPs to attend the house for at least four full days a week except during canvassing periods. 23. All benefits completely cut for those who refuse offers of employment. 24. A force of highly trained specialised, armed rapid response police/army units with extra powers to be assigned to reported trouble spots. 25. Verbal abuse of police officers treated as seriously as physical attacks and heavy punishments for similar attacks on all medical workers. 26. Proven fake news in any form treated severely; with technical offences. Ie falsified derogatory statements appearing to issue from the mouths of politicians or leading figures, resulting in heavy fines and/or suspensions of media licences. 27. Jackie Groundsell travelled from the UK to spend two days with staff in Fuengirola at the invite of EWN CEO Michel Euesden. “I met Michel at the International Women’s Day conference in Marbella in March, a collaborative event between Costa Women and 1230 TWC, and we built up a relationship from there,” explained the mother of three who launched the leading business women’s network in 2002. Jackie added: “We spent a day together here in Spain in May. We got on really well and have taken it from there, so when Michel invited me back to Spain to spend a couple of days in the head office to develop business together, I jumped at it. “It shows how technology has opened up the world. There are very few boundaries to achieve whatever you want to achieve. The first link with Ali Meehan of Costa Women was through Twitter and from there the connection with Michel was through technology. “When I first walked into the EWN office I was taken by the impressive structure visually. ing company, and her own network of all-female support grew quickly and organically; an everincreasing number of women who worked in the city, getting together for lunch once a month to chat and support each other in business. “I was a business advisor for the then Bromley Chamber of Commerce and they asked us to help, so we had a meeting and 54 women turned up. Other women started asking if they could run a

meeting and we soon realised we had to have a more organised approach and the business was born. “Given that many business women are squeezed at either end of the day with family commitments, lunch-time meetings proved to be the most convenient time of day for m a n y, h e n c e t h e name 12.30. “Being able to see the synergies and connect businesswomen, to see the ‘eureka!’ moment that 1230 TWC training and networking provides as their businesses grow, is so rewarding; I am exceptionally fortunate to be in a business that I just love.” Jackie said that meeting her various personal challenges in her own life has given her great empathy with the inspiring business women she meets and supports through networking. “I would say my can-do attitude and ability to talk are two of my greatest personal assets. I’m always up for a challenge!” added Jackie who continues to run her IT training company as part of 1230 Business School as well as public speaking. “I look forward to seeing everyone on March 12 and 13, 2020.”

CIUDADANOS’ Ines Arrimadas wanted to demonstrate liberality by attending the parade that concluded Madrid’s Gay Pride week. This year’s celebration was already morphing into a demonstration against extreme Right-wing Vox’s attempts to undermine legislation guaranteeing the rights of Spain’s LGTB community. So instead of a welcome, Arrimadas and the Cs’ contingent were met by a group wearing the white headdresses of the enslaved women of the Handmaid’s Tale and wearing robes that were Cs-orange instead of red. It was a nice touch but less nice were the bottles, drinks cans and ice-cubes that allegedly rained on Arrimadas and her party in retaliation for Cs’ willingness to use Vox to inch their way onto councils and into regional governments. The parade organisers stressed afterwards that it did not condone throwing objects at anybody. “Obviously they could join the parade, like anyone else,” a

Dog in the manger PABLO IGLESIAS does not like what Pedro Sanchez and the PSOE are offering in return for his support. He believes he deserves more than future government posts for independent politicians named by Unidas Podemos and intermediate, non-Cabinet posts for members of the party executive. One-party governments and overall majorities belong to the past, the Podemos supremo maintains and recent results suggest he’s right. But if he pushes Sanchez into another election, Iglesias could find himself with even fewer than his present 42 seats.

Instead there was an investiture debate without a candidate and the prospect of more regional elections if the PP, Cs and Vox do not get their act together before September 10. This won’t happen until Ciudadanos finally sign an agreement recognising the need for Vox if they are to enter a PP regional government headed by Diaz Ayuso. Will Cs do it? Unless they agree, another election is exactly what the PP, Vox - and a hopeful Angel Gabilondo - deserve.

I WAS shocked to read the issue talking about solidarity with the ‘LBGTQI’ community. As a lesbian I do not feel part of this ‘community’ as our interests are not the same and in the case of the T diametrically opposed. We do not believe that men can change sex or vice versa. Men who perform femininity are not countering stereotypes and instead are pandering to fetishes. There is huge pressure from trans activists to access women only spaces, single sex hospital wards, prisons, refuges and changing rooms. Women feel unsafe as a result... selfidentification allows any male who says he feels like a woman to overrule their wishes. I was particularly surprised to read that Andalucía is being praised for allowing children to choose their ‘gender’ before puberty and receive hormonal treatment to suit their preferred role. In my and many others view, this is a dangerous practice and basically amounts to experimentation on confused adolescents. The research that exists suggests that outcomes are poor eg the young people’s distress is no better, and children should not be able to give consent to life changing and damaging medication. There is a huge increase in girls who feel different and confused and instead of receiving adequate counselling, they are put on a path to irreversible treatments and mutilation of their bodies by mastectomies and unproved hormones. These girls often have other issues such as autism or may have been sexually abused. Many would have become lesbians and nearly all are likely to desist if given time. Andalucía should not be proud of their position on this. There is a huge scandal building on this and it is shameful that this ‘tolerant’ society is doing the enabling. Yours sincerely F Gillard

The beauty of Benidorm I RECENTLY visited the town of Benidorm and after the town being rubbished by all and sundry, particularly in the tabloid press, I was expecting the worse. But on my arrival, I found a warm, clean and inviting town and to my surprise, there were many Spanish on holiday there. ALLEGATIONS that a British tourist assaulted medical personnel makes for worrying reading as cases of patients harming doctors and nurses continue to rise. The British man’s alleged assault, in Mallorca’s Magaluf resort, comes as a local trade union representing medical staff said it was the fifth such attack in a week. The attacks have not just been confined to Mallorca. One assault took place at a clinic in San Pedro de Alcantara on the Costa del Sol earlier this month. Trade unions across Spain have called for more to be done to protect staff. A total of 28 personnel were attacked in Malaga Province alone, according to data from the area’s Medical Association. Cases sometimes involve patients brought to hospital under the influence of alcohol or drugs. Others are simply instances of wanton aggression. But as with many things the attacks themselves do not constitute the problem on their own. Such violence is symptomatic of deeper issues. Many hospitals across Spain are overstretched and understaffed because of the exodus of staff to other countries and spending cuts. Limited numbers of staff trying to manage and treat patients, many of whom arrive in emergency rooms frustrated and unable to act reasonably, clearly contributes to the phenomenon. That said, everyone has the right to work in dignity and without fear from threatening or violent behaviour. There is no justification for such attacks.

Spanish police called to flight: Why is it always the English groups who make these problems on the way to Spain and not the other way around? Same with balconing. LETTING GO: Take it a step at a time.

Take cool showers or baths,

go to the beach or go for a swim. Alternatives include cold packs and wraps, towels, sponging, foot baths, etc. Just keep cool Wear light coloured, loosefitting clothes made of natural materials and if going out always wear a wide-brimmed hat, to keep the sun off your head. If you or others feel unwell, immediately seek assistance. If you feel dizzy, weak, anxious or have intense thirst and headache, move to a cool place as soon as possible and measure your body

Work-ready space HOME buyers’ wish-lists these days often include space for an office. A computer is virtually as common a h o u s e h o l d i t e m a s a T V, a n d i f y o u add a printer into the mix, then a workspace nook becomes an essential. T h a n k s t o m o d e r n t e c h n o l o g y, working from home is increasingly the norm; it is more than possible to be permanently based on the Spanish Costa while not earning a living locally. Many retirees who locate here also find they need work areas, especially anyone involved with running a local club, society or charity. To be as productive as possible, and to take full advantage of all the benefits working at home brings, it helps to have a decent home office. The first step for creating a workready area whatever the available space which promotes efficiency, but at the same time blends with the rest o f t h e p r o p e r t y, i s t o t h i n k a b o u t p r i orities. This means considering the most basic needs, starting with must-have o ff i c e i t e m s d e p e n d i n g o n t h e n a t u r e

of the work: lamp, printer, filing cabinets, telephone, and so on. There should be an electrical socket conveniently close by. The space should also ideally offer some level of privacy from the general activity of family life. It might be necessary to get creative to end up with an attractive home office blending functional and decorat i v e e l e m e n t s , a n d w h i c h d o e s n ’t o c cupy too much space. There has to be room for a desk: turning the kitchen table into a work area is far from ideal. One idea is to build your own desk using filing cabinets at the base and a wood or laminate countertop as the top. Just as vital is a comfortable chair, ideally one both supporting and aesthetically pleasing. A bright, patterned cushion could add just the right touch of homeliness. Storage space can be an issue in smaller properties, but again in most cases something for keeping files and papers will be an essential. Custom-made shelving could well be the best solution, or how about a

THIS week sees the 50th anniversary of the moon landing on July 20, 1969. Like other past memorable events, did you happen to catch it? I was allowed to stay up all night to watch. The real giveaway it was no hoax was that the pictures were dreadful and started off upside down. Armstrong’s descent was virtually indecipherable, though when Buzz followed it was clearer. I recall the breathless excitement of James Burke and Patrick Moore making a huge effort to stay professional, and holding my breath in case Armstrong disappeared in the deep dust on the moon’s surface. So much packed into that magnificent night. For one brief moment, anything was possible. We, the human race, had reason to be proud and amazed. What technology, what skill, what daring! But how dispiriting that some still believe ridiculous conspiracy theories debunking the whole thing. As physicist Professor Brian Cox says, everyone’s entitled to their own opinions but not to their own facts. I read about a guy who worked as an engineer for BBC External Services in Bush House, Aldwych, at the time. They had permanent audio feeds of the

There’s something uniquely dispiriting about being asked to identify a fire hydrant and struggling at it.

Got it right now, at last I’m into the site and I’ve totally forgotten what I was looking for or what I was going to do! Apparently these things are going to get harder as AI is getting clever enough to answer the questions. Can’t wait for the next lot of tests they come up with. As clever as AI CAPTCHA is it doesn’t take into account the immeasurable damage being done to my self-esteem when I fail one of their ridiculous tests. I have an iPhone and on it I have several Apps, not hundreds and I noticed, every day, I was being told they were being updated. Then the next day they updated the same one again because the update from yesterday had bugs and creepy crawlies in it. I decided that I wasn’t going to update for a while and at today’s date, after one week, I have 48 updates and I’m not going to update any of them to see what happens. A lot of the time the updates take away something I liked. Twitter, for instance, have a bookmark feature which was fine so I could read longer tweets later. All of a sudden now, when I bookmark one, it suggests three people I might want to share the bookmark with. I don’t need that thanks. I’m more than capable of deciding these things on my own. Anyway I’ll let you know when the Apps stop working.

A launch of a new concept and a unification of a suite of technologies. The Airspeeder offers the promise of an exciting racing series, coming soon, as soon as 2020. The launch at the FOS 2019 featured two Mark-Two prototype Airspeeders racing head to head at speeds of up to 100 kph and an average of four metres above the ground. The Airspeeder race series will begin in 2020 and will feature Airspeeder Mark-Four’s which will be manned by pilots. With uncanny echoes of the racing cars of the past though with significant differences the Mark Four manned octocopters or Speeders will achieve speeds of up to 200 kph and offer a power to weight ratio superior to that

Fiesta in Ronda THE pretty Andalucian town of Ronda, close to the hedonistic Costa del Sol, has one of the most famous fiestas in this traditional region of Spain. The Pedro Romero Festival takes place at the end of August and normally runs into the beginning of September and though the Fiesta is centred around the bullfights, there is so much more to this event, so much so that it has been declared a festival of National Tourist Interest. The main event, on the Saturday of the fiesta is the Corrida Goyesca Bullfight, the first of which took place in 1954 on the occasion of the bicentennial of the birth of the bullfighter Pedro Romero. On this occasion, the bullfighters Antonio Bienvenida, Cayetano Ordoñez and Cesar Girón jumped into the ring dressed as if they were from a painting by the artist Goya (who had painted Romero) and this feature is replicated to this day. Throughout its history, this event has counted on the presence of prestigious guests, such as the writer Ernest Heming-
