Found dead in boot By Marco March JOSE MARTIN GALVEZ, 66, was found dead in the boot of a car in Rincon de la Victoria, after a search mission was launched more than two weeks ago. The man was said to have left the house in the dead of night so as to not to wake his family up who were sleeping at the time. He was in his pyjamas, he had no mobile phone and no identification with him when he left. Galvez left the family home in a grey Seat Ibiza with the li-

cence plate 0076GXY. As of yet police have not confirmed if this is the vehicle he was found in. The investigation will continue and after the autopsy is completed a more thorough examination of the case can take place. The Guardia Civil have been able to confirm that there appear to be no signs Sr Galvez suffered serious bodily harm before his death. Famous actress from Malaga, Maggie Civantos, who is the niece of Galvez, alerted the public on Monday via social media.
It’s rape not abuse M O T R I L’ S m a y o r L u i s a Garcia Chamorro and town councillors joined a demonstration in support with a ‘rape’ victim. They joined the rally at noon on Monday which was organised by the Municipal Council of Women. It was in protest at a p r o s e c u t o r ’s d e c i s i o n t o c h a rg e f i v e y o u t h s w i t h sexual abuse rather than rape after they had sex with a 13-year-old girl who was rendered incapacitated through drink and drugs. The incident happened in a disused warehouse in the Catalan town of Manresa, and has become known as ‘the Manresa wolf pack’ after the case of a woman who was raped at the Pamplona bull running festival. At the demonstration, a minute’s silence was held and a manifesto was read in protest against the decision of the Public Prosecutor’s Office. The mayor closed the reading with a resounding “It is not abuse, it is rape.”

Heroic lifeguards save elderly man THE fast response time of the lifeguards on duty at Velilla beach in Almuñecar saved the life of a 7 4 - y e a r- o l d m a n w h o w a s s t r u g g l i n g t o s w i m about 60 metres from the shoreline. The elderly gentleman from Jaen had planted his umbrella down and went for a swim in the sea, but due to adverse weather conditions, the waves were stronger than usual and swept him out further than he had planned to go. Lifeguards Alicia and Alonso saw the man exhausted and semi-conscious from their boat and immediately made a beeline to save him from drowning. They mentioned afterwards that if they had come along 10 minutes later the man ‘would most likely be dead.’ As soon as the Jaen resident was safely on board the team called an ambulance and he was rushed to a hospital near Puerta de Mar. He and his family expressed their wholehearted gratitude to the saviours after he was released from hospital. The man is now enjoying some much needed rest at his holiday apartment and is in good health.

Flying visitors AIR enthusiasts are in for a treat at Velez-Malaga this weekend with star attractions being a fly-by from the stateof-the-art Eurofighter and a display by a Spanish Navy Harrier. Huge crowds are expected for the fourth International Torre del Mar Air Show, which takes place in the sky
above the town’s beach. Last year around 250,000 spectators gathered to see a variety of planes put through their paces. The director of the festival, Pablo Gonzalez, explained that on Friday and Saturday there will be test flights and training and then the show proper will start on Sunday
from 11.30am. He promised “a cast of participants that covers the history of aeronautics and worldclass equipment.” As well as aircraft from ultra-lights to the latest fighters, the Guardia Civil will make their debut at the festival displaying examples from their land, sea and air fleets.
AMIKO animal party THE Animal Protection Association AMIKO is holding an open party from 12 noon on Saturday (July 13) on Playa Granada in Motril at the bar Bonobo Beach. There will be a vegetarian paella and a Zumba show in which the Cortes Sisters will show off their moves. The event aims to highlight the hardships animals suffer and to put an end to the
negligence and other forms of maltreatment. Anyone promoting projects that are trying to change animal rights for the better are especially welcome. AMIKO focuses on finding new homes for animals and rehabilitating them, but also raise awareness among young people to better inform them on how to treat animals.

Century of ships THE fourth regatta of the Costa Tropical will take place from the July 18 to 21 along the beaches of Granada where nearly 100 vessels will battle it out for the grand prize. The boats will follow a route passing the beaches of Motril, Torrenueva, Carchuna-Calahonda, Castell de Ferro, Salobreña, Almuñécar-La Herradura and La Rábita. The municipality of Granada partnered with the Real Club Náutico de Motril is offering €1,500 to the fastest team of seafarers and €150-250 for the winners of each individual category. The race will be made up of five categories encompassing both large and small ships: Cruiser, Optimist, Laser 4.7, Snipe and Finn. On the 19th the lightweight ships (the latter four on the list) will go at it to see who is the most nimble. Then on the 20th the larger cruisers which make up around half of the total fleet signed up for the event will race in the most prestigious of the five events. The team to beat is the Melilla crew, having won the event several times in the past.
Armed Forces Day lunch MORE than 90 people attended a lunch at the Al Andalus Hotel in Maro, hosted by the Royal British Legion Nerja Branch, to celebrate Armed Forces Day, raising €510. The annual event is held to show support for the men and women who make up the Armed Forces from currently serving troops to veterans, cadets and service families. Major Del Hamilton from the
Personnel Recovery Centre (PRC), Edinburgh, was guest of honour and was presented with a cheque for €5,000. PRC is the Nerja Branch’s chosen charity alongside the Poppy Appeal. Certificates of Appreciation were also presented to members and thanks expressed to Sailnplay in Marinas Del Este who donated a cruise for two people for a raffle.

Man held LOCAL POLICE officers in Malaga City have arrested a 45year-old suspect in connection with an alleged arson attack near to the city’s sports centre. Officers were called to the area on Thursday when a fire broke out but firefighters were able to extinguish the blaze before it spread.

Holy waters THIS picture of religious devotees lowering a figurine of the Virgin Mary into the sea comes as Spain prepares to mark the Virgen del Carmen fiesta on Tuesday. The Festival of Our Lady of Carmen, to give the fiesta its full name, is celebrated in Spain and across Latin America every July 16. It is particularly popular in coastal areas as the Carmen incarnation of the Virgin Mary is commonly associated with the sea. The name Carmen comes from the holy mountain of
Mount Carmel in modern-day Israel. The link between the Virgen del Carmen and the sea forms the centrepiece of the festival when the figure of the Virgin Mary is carried into the water by worshippers. The festival stems from a visitation that English prior Saint Simon Stock was said have experienced on July 16, 1251. The Virgen del Carmen is said to have appeared to him and told him she would free anyone who worshipped her from going to purgatory
Street views ALMUÑECAR’S council has said it has received large amount of requests from tourists who want more information about a street in the town recently named the narrowest in Europe. The council said the 35-centimetre-wide alley, off Calle San Joaquin, could become the subject of a social media selfie contest.

Urbanisation ruling A COURT in Malaga City has ruled that a board which runs projects for a Rincon de la Victoria urbanisation works must undertake works there worth more than €3.1 million. The Third Court of Administrative Contentions ruled that the Junta de Compensacion which oversees works at the Parque Victoria urbanisation, must complete works it should have finished in July 2011. Rincon de la Victoria mayor Francisco Salado said the ruling was ‘great news’ for the urbanisation’s residents. “This ruling aims to guarantee basic services and welfare for the residents of Parque Victoria and brings them into line with those provided for other residents of the town,” the mayor said. Projects at the urbanisation must be finished as they pose a threat to the public interest and the Junta must foot the bill for the works, the court ruled. The ruling can be appealed.

Thousands at festival AROUND 150,000 people visited Torre del Mar for the Weekend Beach Festival, according to its organisers. The sixth edition of the annual festival featured performances from Black Eyed Peas, The Wailers and Becky G. They were among more than 90 acts from Spain and across the world who played there. Festival organisers said the event generated more than €6 million of Torre del Mar and Velez-Malaga’s local economy. “Weekend Beach is especially grateful to Torre del Mar for its warm welcome,” they said. Attendees behaved ‘exemplary’ at the festival which went without a hitch as a result, the organisers added. The event ran from Wednesday July 3 to Saturday July 6. The number of those who attended surpassed last year’s total, organisers said. Organisers said they are already planning to hold the seventh edition of the festival in Torre del Mar in 2020.

Run for cancer TORROX’S council has said its annual Race for Happiness will raise money for the Spanish Association against Cancer (AECC). The non-competitive fivekilometre race, which sees runners covered in coloured powder, takes place on Saturday July 13. More than 1,000 runners took part in the race last year.
Top class A SCHOOL student from Almuñecar has been recognised by the University of Granada for achieving the best grades possible to get into the institution. Laura Alaminos Garrido, a student at the town’s Al-Andalus Secondary Schoo, joined 29 other students at the university to recognise her Baccalaureate Assessment Test grades. Sewage spill LA HERRADURA’S promenade was left awash with sewage water at the weekend after the engine powering pumping of waste broke down. The spill first appeared on the town’s Avenida Andres Segovia, near to the location of the waste water treatment plant. Almuñecar and La Herradura’s deputy ma yor J ua n J os e R uiz J oya s a id the breakdown had ‘nothing to do’ with recent road works in the area. The pump was fixed by Sunday, according to coun-
cil sources. “The waters poured into the road due to an electrical failure of the pump that takes waste to the treatment plant,” the deputy mayor said. It comes as councillors with the Convergencia Andalucia opposition said the breakdown was ‘embarrassing’ because it ha ppe ne d i n an ar ea popul ar wi t h tourists. The party accused the ruling conservative Partido Popular (P) of ‘irresponsibility’ over the spillage.

Council pulls gig THE council of Rincon de la Victoria has cancelled a planned concert featuring a Madrid raprock band after a far-right party claimed their songs glorified terrorism. Def Con Dos (DCD) were scheduled to play at the town’s feria tomorrow (Friday July 12) but their appearance was pulled following a complaint from Vox councillor Jose Antonio Rodriquez. The band accused the council of attempting to censor freedom of expression.
Ship visit LOCALS in and visitors to Motril will get the chance to climb aboard a Spanish naval ship which is docking there this Saturday. The navy’s Infanta Cristina de la Armada corvette will be open to visitors from 10am to 6.30pm for the town’s port’s open day. The vessel has recently been involved in antipiracy operations off the coast of Somalia.

Burglary arrests THE Guardia Civil made four arrests during operations to tackle house burglaries in the Axarquia region. The break-ins took place at both residential and commercial properties in Velez-Malaga and Rincon de la Victoria. Two of the arrests were of minors.

Biblical origins THE ancient Philistines who feature in the Bible’s Old Testament may have come from Spain and other parts of Mediterranean Europe, according to new DNA research. Researchers have claimed tests on the remains of 10 people, including four infants, showed their genetic codes matched those seen in Iron Age populations from Spain, Greece and Sardinia. The findings suggested the Philistines arrived in the Middle East in either the late Bronze Age or early Iron Age between the 12th and 8th centuries BCE. Their genes were diluted as the settlers mixed with locals as time went on, researchers said. Samples were taken from remains at a cemetery in Ashkelon in Israel and findings were published in the Science Advances journal. The Philistines repeatedly clashed with the Israelites in what was then Canaan, according to biblical accounts. PHILISTINES: May have come from Spain.

Driver drowned as river floods in northern region THE lifeless body of a driver has been found after it was washed from his car when it was caught up in floods when a river burst its banks in the Spanish region of Navarra. Tafalla, a town with more than 10,000 inhabitants and only 35 kilometres from Pamplona, where the famous bull running fiestas of San Fermin are currently on, was completely cut off when the river Cidacos overflowed. Firefighters found the body of the driver near Moriones, in the
municipality of Ezprogui (Navarra), 14 kilometres from Sangüesa and 50 kilometres from Pamplona, after the intense rains that caused flooding in several towns in the region. A major storm raged from early Monday afternoon. Between 6pm and 6.30pm, 46 litres of rain per square metre fell. As the river flooded Mercadona, supermarket workers in Tafalla had to take refuge on the roof. They were then rescued by helicopter. According to the government of
Navarra, at 5.40pm on Monday the river had a height of just 0.11 metres. By 10.30pm it had reached 3.71 metres. The force of the flood waters swept cars away and anything else that got in their way. Nearby municipalities including Pueyo and Olite also had to evacuate residents due to the rising waters. Tafalla opened public buildings to shelter evacuated people and those unable to return to their homes.
Volcanic Spain SURPRISINGLY perhaps, Spain is one of the major areas in the European Union which has a significant number of volcanos. This is not necessarily something to worry about if you live on mainland Spain as the Croscat and Santa Margarita volcanos in Gerona have both been inactive for more than 10,000 years. If however you are in Tenerife, then you will no doubt be aware of the Teide volcano which is the highest peak in Spain and is considered potentially as dangerous as both Mount Etna and Vesuvius, but this one hasn’t erupted since 1909, although a smaller volcano underwater and near the island of El Hierro also in the Canaries did erupt as recently as 2011. The most serious recent problem however was on La Palma when the Teneguía vent which is part of the Cumbre Vieja Volcano spewed out large volumes of lava in 1971 and experts consider that a further eruption is overdue.

Brutal murder in Tenerife POLICE have launched a murder investigation after a taxi driver was brutally killed and his body partially set fire to in Tenerife in the Canary Islands. The body of the 64-yearold man was found in the underground garage of an apartment block he and his partner had moved into just a few days previously. Guardia Civil in the town of Granadilla de Abona say he had died from blows to the head. They added that an attempt had been made to burn the body, probably to hide the cause of death, but the flames had only touched his legs. An attempt had also been made to clean the site of the crime, with numerous empty bottles of cleaning fluids and bleach left scattered around the scene. The victim’s private car, which was parked close by appeared to have blood on its bonnet. The corpse was discovered
by a neighbour who called police, with the victim’s

After minor surgical procedures, you cannot donate blood for seven days or until you are fully recovered. After undergoing major surgery, you will not be able to donate blood for four months. The rarest blood type is AB, present in 1 per cent of Caucasians, according to research by the America Red Cross. Blood transfusions are carried out daily in Spanish hospitals with more than 6,200 patients being given them, of whom almost a quarter are fighting cancer and a similar figure receiving transfusions during or after surgery. THE WEEK IN POLITICS TOP brass of the left-leaning Partido Socialista (PSOE) met ahead of talks with the leftist Podemos to form a government, their only viable option for power. Party leader and acting Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez met with his Podemos counterpart Pablo Iglesias on Tuesday to try and put an agreement for government together. Iglesias was still pushing for members of his party to be given briefs in Sanchez’s Council of Ministers. Sanchez said he thought such an arrangement would leave the government working at cross purposes. “We do not need two governments in one, but a government with a coherent message,” the acting prime minister said. However, Sanchez added he would be willing to appoint independent ministers, a thinly-veiled concession to Iglesias who could nominate figures from outside his party.

DEAL PITCH: Sanchez and other PSOE figures discussed the offer on Monday. The Podemos leader said on Tuesday his party would back PSOE on foreign policy and on the Catalan independence question, showing he has backed down in some areas. “We do not have red lines. We understand, because of the balance of the parties, that the leadership of the government on Cataluña must fall with PSOE,” Podemos sources said.
The declaration led to a sharp rebuke from PSOE acting Defence Minister Margarita Robles who accused Iglesias of changing its position on Cataluña to get a seat at the table. “I do not think it’s coherent. If you have a position you have to stick to it,” she said. Iglesias said his party would push for dialogue on the issue but added Podemos’ focus remained on securing social jus-
tice. The latest moves towards forming a government come as Sanchez prepares to face the Congress of Deputies investiture vote from Monday July 22. Sanchez met with conservative Partido Popular (PP) leader Pablo Casado to try and persuade him to abstain in the vote, making it easier for PSOE to secure power. Casado said he would vote no because his responsibility lies in opposing the government. A rift has also opened between PSOE and the centrist Ciudadanos opened after PSOE Interior Minister Fernando Grande-Marlaska said their siding with the PP and far-right Vox threatened LGBTQ rights. The angry reaction from Ciudadanos leader Albert Rivera makes it more likely his party will also vote against the investiture.
One year in CONSERVATIVE Partido Popular (PP) leader Pablo Casado marks one year in the party’s top job this month. Casado’s time at the head of the party has seen it go through some of its toughest times in its history, including a disastrous election result in April. It will be for future historians to judge how much responsibility for the wiping out of around half of the party’s Congress of Deputies members falls with Casado. But it is clear that Casado’s initial strategy for the party which saw him move further to the right did not pay dividends. The logic was clear enough. Casado hoped to stave off the threat from the insurgent far-right Vox on his right flank while differentiating the PP from the centrist Ciudadanos. While some may argue he bungled that election, Casado showed his talent for ideological pivoting when he adopted a more centrist message following the defeat. The PP was able to regain momentum during local and regional elections in May. It held onto many of its heartlands while scoring some notable victories, including installing one of its own as Madrid mayor. Casado will have to continue delivering to avoid a future catastrophe.

Young Irish man raped in Magaluf brothel AN Irish teenaged man has been raped by two men in Magaluf in Mallorca. The 19-year-old victim is said to have been enticed into a Punta Ballena brothel in Palma by two prostitutes with the promise of a strip show. When the teen, who was described as very drunk, said he felt uncomfortable and besides had no money, he was thrown out via a back door. It was then that two men, aged about 40, assaulted him. After his ordeal the victim found his friends, from whom he had become separated earlier in the evening, and told them what had happened at about 5.30am on Sunday (July 7). He was taken to the Spanish island’s Son Espases Hospital, where doctors confirmed he had injuries compatible with being sexually assaulted. National Police investigators confirmed he had been raped. Police officers interviewed him, but while he said he could identify the prostitutes and his attackers, he did not want to press charges. It has been

Dead in his cell A MAN has been found dead after having his jugular slit in a cell in Sangonera prison in Murcia. The Instituciones Penitencias are currently investigating the incident which occurred at 2am on Monday. The victim’s cellmate was the first to alert the guards on duty and although they reacted quickly to get the still bleeding man to the prison infirmary, he had lost too much blood to be saved. Sources close to the deceased speculated that the sharp object used to kill the man was likely a razor blade but recent evidence suggests that it was the top of a can of tuna, the likes of which are sold in the cafeteria. His cellmate and a nearby witness claimed that the man had committed suicide. This will be determined later after the coroner’s report is filed.

A SWEDISH man, aged 24, has died after falling from a fifth-floor balcony in Palma. National Police say he fell from the building on Calle Trafalgar, Coll d’en Rebassa, at 6am on Monday morning. Apparently, the victim had recently arrived accompanied by friends for a holiday, and was staying in the apartment of relatives of one of his companions. Police forensic experts have examined the scene and ruled out the possibility of foul play or suicide, saying it was an accidental fall. Officers say that when police arrived, they found the group of friends had drunk large quantities of alcohol and did not realise the young man had fallen to his death.
Migrant takes on far-right by Joe Gerrard FOOTAGE of a migrant worker taking a far-right party to task on its antiimmigration rhetoric has gone viral on social media. The video, liked by at least 19 million people on Twitter, shows the worker tending to crops in a field in eastern Spain before addressing Vox. He began by mockingly giving a fascist salute. The
worker said: “When people say long live Spain, or long live Vox, no, you do not have to do that.” He then pointed to the crops and added: “Spain is here. “It is very easy to talk about the field because you are not here. You can sit in your chair and talk s*** about immigrants, but look, this is what makes Spain my friend,” the worker said.
“That’s what immigrants do. We are hard workers,” he added. Several people took to Twitter to praise the video. User Victory said: “That’s patriotic, not having a little flag on your bracelet or voting for fascist parties.” The video comes as Vox has called for irregular migrants to be deported and for immigration into Spain to be restricted.

BREXIT BRIEF By Joe Gerrard BRITISH parliamentarians moved to stop Prime Minister Theresa May’s successor from taking Britain out of the EU without a deal this week amidst growing concerns about a disorderly Brexit. MPs from both the ruling Conservatives and the opposition Labour party have floated plans to stop either Boris Johnson or Jeremy Hunt railroading a no-deal past lawmakers. Conservative Dominic Grieve is attempting to force the government to make a statement on Northern Ireland in October, making attempts to suspend parliament at that time illegal. Johnson said he would consider suspending, or proroguing, parliament if it meant he could secure Brexit. That provoked a backlash including from former leadership rival Sajid Javid who said it would be undemocratic. Another former rival, International Development Secretary Rory Stewart, said he would help organise an ‘alternative parliament’ to

EU watchdog rule worries
THE EU’s banking regulator has said banks across the bloc, including those in Spain, are some €135 billion short on capital reserves required under new international rules. The European Banking Authority (EBA) said the bloc’s largest banks would have to increase the amount of funds they hold in reserve to comply with Basel IV rules. The new regulations were brought to ensure banks had enough capital to stave off losses and cash flow problems in the event of a crisis like that of 2008.

ELECTRONICS and engineering company Ingeteam has unveiled its strategy for the next three years, with bosses planning to strike new partnership deals and expand into other markets. CEO Adolfo Rebollo and Corporate Development Director Alex Belaustegi said the firm was hoping to expand into Japan and other countries with joint ventures and local partnerships. The plan comes after Ingeteam grew by 47 per cent during the last three years. It made net profits of €14.5 million in 2018, 37 per cent more than in 2017.

Renfe to buy more trains PUBLICLY-OWNED company Renfe has approved plans to buy 38 new hybrid trains for its Cercanias suburban lines at a cost of €365.6 million. Renfe said the total cost of the purchase would be €473.9 million when the costs of storing and maintaining the trains during the next 15 years are included. The trains are being bought to help Renfe renew its rolling stock and move from diesel to electric powered engines. The new trains will be made up of three carriages and a generator, have top speeds of 160 kilometres per hour and will feature free wifi for travellers.
Harvest fall SPAIN’S cereal crop harvest is expected to be 17.4 million tons this year, 27.3 per cent less than in 2019 according to agro-food co-operatives who said it was due to less rain and May and June being hotter than usual.
Bank ruling MADRID’S Provincial Court has ruled a shareholder ’s request filed to bring in bankruptcy administrators to the now defunct Popular Bank cannot be admitted because the procedure can only be used for companies which have dissolved or liquidated.
Court rules pension rate ‘sexist’ SPAIN’S acting Welfare Minister said pensions for part-time workers will be reviewed after the country’s Constitutional Court ruled current rates discriminated against women. Magdalena Valerio said changes would be implemented as soon as possible. Social Security officials have been assessing the issue since the EU’s Court of Justice stated rates may break antisexism laws.
Rate changes will not affect pension supplements or payments already settled, Valerio added. It comes after the Constitutional Court ruled part-time pension rates were indirectly sexist because they did not match with full-time payments and most part-time workers are women. The ruling came after university professor Simeo Miquel Roe filed a case in a Lleida Court in Cataluña.

New tax advisor code of conduct TWO new best practice codes have been brought in to cover tax advisors following their approval by an industry body. The Forum of Associations of Tax Professions approved the new conduct codes which commits companies and workers to report rule breakers. Both codes will apply to members of the forum, with one covering associations and the other professionals, according to the Finance Ministry. Rules in the code for professionals include requiring them to advise their clients against actions which could pose ‘important’ fiscal risks. These include registering companies in overseas tax havens, the way double-entry bookkeeping is used and payments above legal limits. The Treasury Ministry said adherence to the code would be monitored by the Tax Agency. Lists of tax advisor associations, colleges and intermediaries will be published. A new logo is set to be created for professionals to use to show they are signed up to the code. The Tax Agency will also communicate with and monitor professionals and signatory associations.

Recovery ‘headwinds’ EUROZONE economic recovery continues to face headwinds but risks are currently low, according to the Spanish Vice President of the European Central Bank (ECB). Luis de Guindos said factors including the ongoing trade war between the US, China and EU, difficulties in emerging markets and Brexit uncertainty are dampening eurozone growth. The ECB should loosen the money supply to buoy growth and ensure inflation remains close to its targeted rate of just below 2 per cent, the vice president added. Policymakers should ensure that making money more readily available does not have unwanted side effects and create further risks, he said. De Guindos said it would be important for financial firms and other companies to strengthen their balance sheets to guard against shocks to the economic system. “Fortunately, banks have done exactly that in the last decade,” de Guindos said. The vice president said there had been advances in regulations since the last recession. Rules need to be introduced to cover non-banking financial entities such

What’s in a name… continued
LEAPY LEE SAYS IT OTHERS THINK IT LAST week you may remember I wrote about the extraordinary treatment my estranged wife Pauline, while en route to Mallorca, received at the easyJet boarding gate of Belfast International Airport. The following day I called easyJet for an explanation. After reaching a couple of ‘robots’- one of which informed me that my call was being recorded - I finally managed to connect with another human being. After confirming that I too was recording the conversation (a statement which immediately brought a distinct change of tone!) I commenced to put forward my concerns. ‘Why’, I began, ‘was Pauline Graham asked to pay £80 to board her designated aircraft, because the name on her passport differed slightly to the one on her boarding card’? ‘This is company policy,’ was the somewhat terse reply. ‘It is a charge administered for a change of name on the boarding card.’ Frankly this explanation conjured up a whole host of queries I could have put forward. Ie how did they issue a receipt if the payment was in cash? How did the company, at that point, actually manage to change the boarding card name? Did this mean that were I a fugitive, or a terrorist, I could become another person between the boarding gate and the aircraft simply by parting with £80? etc etc. However, since this was

‘company policy,’ I decided not to enter these particular realms of exploration and moved on to my next, and to my mind, far more important inquiry. ‘Why,’ I continued, did a member of staff, in full view and hearing of the other passengers, vir-
tually accuse a passenger of tampering with her own passport? I explained that when Pauline pointed out that the Embassy had printed her birth certificate name (which did in fact comply with the boarding card) on the ‘remarks page’ the
somewhat officious staff member had loudly declared that the name had ‘in no way’ been put there by the Embassy and the line of print was in fact ‘crooked.’ At this revelation there was a long pause from the company representative. When she finally spoke again, her somewhat superior attitude of earlier had subdued considerably. ‘I need to consult with my superior on that,’ she announced tentatively. After a few minutes she was back. ‘If this indeed was the case,’ she said apologetically, ‘our staff member was completely out of order and we will be investigating your complaint thoroughly. Meanwhile we are refunding your £80 immediately and apologise for any inconvenience caused.’ I thanked her, but added that I required a full letter of apology and also some assurance that the staff member in question would be reprimanded for her actions. I was assured that if I put it all in writing, they would indeed comply with my wishes. So well done easyJet. At least they owned up to their responsibilities. It didn’t however explain the fact that I later discovered a further £40 had surreptitiously been removed from the account of the person who booked the ticket and equally mysteriously, refunded shortly after my altercation. DOES the idea of an exploration of the sea floor excite and intrigue you? Did the 1955 cinema blockbuster ‘20,000 Leagues Under the Sea’ seize your imagination? The sea and exploring ‘inner space’ has been the stuff of legend and myth. The development of the Aqualung with tanks of air strapped to your back in combination with the invention of the regulator to allow you to access compressed air in the mid-20th century led to popular TV shows as well as the democratisation of the exploration of the submarine world. Of course people have been exploring the fringes for ever. Diving for pearls and sponges as well as fishing. The Aqualung extended humanities’ reach towards the deep, we were no longer limited to a single breath. The subsea battle of Aqualung equipped divers and mini submarine sleds in the James Bond ‘Thunderball’ released in 1965 exploited the excitement of that era in the possibilities that were opening to Aqualung equipped divers. The submarine though has occupied a special place in my imagination. The idea that we may enjoy the deep sea without getting our feet wet and have a clear view of a shark or a nameless

Many companies have been founded and then foundered in continuing attempts to design and construct mechanisms that will allow us to keep our feet dry and let us see the deep sea. The challenges are many and extreme in meeting them, one hurdle that has finally defeated most has been the cost. To be honest the Aqualung has never grabbed me, while a snorkel

A small machine designed to be stowed on a Superyacht and deployed from the yacht on a whim. The mothership was not a scientific research vessel in this case, it was a luxury yacht fitted out for pleasure and enjoyment of and in close proximity of the sea. Still a significant step, still vastly expensive. That cruise lines of the type you and I might book a holiday passage on have decided to equip several of their ships with submarines is delightful and exciting. SO now we know. Pedro Sanchez has fixed the Investiture debate for July 22 and we know that if there’s no overall majority on July 23 - and that’s something we do know, because he won’t have one - there will be a second vote on July 24. If there is enough support and sufficient abstentions, Sanchez will squeak home back to the Moncloa. What we don’t know is where that support is coming from. Podemos supremo Pablo Iglesias could contribute 42 seats if he were so inclined, but his inclination includes ministries and possibly a vice-presidency. We know that neither Sanchez nor the PSOE hierarchy believes that Iglesias is worth it and brings the risk that he will start doing his own thing and play to the gallery. We know Pablo Casado is turning deaf ears to requests to abstain from veteran PP politicos including Mariano Rajoy and Esperanza Aguirre. We know that Albert Rivera will also refuse to abstain despite veter-

Knowns and unknowns an and not-so-veteran Ciudadanos politicos who think he should. That leaves odds and sods including the Catalan pro-independence parties, some of whom are hinting at abstention and regional parties like the PNV. There’s also Bildu, once ETA’s political arm, and whom the Right still like to label as terrorists, although ETA disappeared years ago. But should they all support Sanchez, he will still need Iglesias.
It’s anybody’s guess what will happen in less than two weeks’ time but there’s one thing we do know. If Sanchez doesn’t pull it off, there will be another general election.
Lie back and think of Spain VOX continues to raise its voice and twist Albert Rivera’s arm. If he
wants Vox’s votes to enable the Partido Popular and Ciudadanos to govern in the Madrid Community and Murcia then he must sign up to a threesome that includes Vox. No excuses, no ‘I didn’t want to do it’ or ‘My drink was spiked.’ Instead, Vox wants Rivera’s name on a piece of paper. And Rivera? So far he has resisted but he could always sign, do his duty, then lie back and think of Spain.
End of the beginning IF Spain is subjected to another general election, it will presumably be as hamstrung by some political parties’ red lines and vetoes as the last one. Forget the population, winning an election is no longer a means to an end, but the end in itself instead of a beginning.
Waterloo sunset IT’S been said that Cataluña’s president Quim Torra has done nothing during his first year in office. No budget, no reversals of the cuts imposed years back by CiU, which begat his own party PDeCat, and no discernible government programme. Possibly 50 per cent of Cataluña’s population are attracted to independence, but even they want a government that looks out for them, not an Administration that devotes its time and energies to tending to the needs of Torra’s self-exiled predecessor Carles Puigdemont, his puppet-master in Waterloo. Doesn’t bode well for hypothetical independence or, probably, votes in the next regional election.

TO the editor and Nicole King, Nicole’s report on losing her car’s number plate is comparable with my wife’s and my experience a few months ago when, while in a queue to join the highway near where we live, a new BMW One-Series had exactly the same Registration Number as our Ford Focus. The driver must have noticed that I had seen the number and when I tried to keep up with him to talk (perhaps) with the driver, he sped off at high speeds, weaving in and out of other cars, he escaped but to me that would indicate that he knew of his ‘crime.’ I made up a letter in Spanish, printed it and took it to the Local Police, advised them and obtained a Crime Report number, and had the copy signed and stamped. At least if we received any fines then we would be covered if the offending car drivers had committed them. One other point regarding being involved in an accident, never apologise especially with witnesses present, and never accept what a police officer writes on the accident form especially if the other driver is Spanish. Do not sign the form if you do not understand what he has written. This possibility definitely exists that the police officer will try to show that you were responsible and I speak from experience. But I used to be a police expert witness in South Africa with the job of investigating accidents and who was to blame and give evidence in the subsequent Court case. So the Guardia Civil Officer’s report was disregarded by the insurance companies. Another, never wear anything in or over your ears while driving, It is against the Law. THE San Fermin Running of the Bulls festival takes place in Navarra’s Pamplona this week, with calls to end it and other similar fiestas as strong as ever. Celebrations to open San Fermin began on Saturday before the runs started on Sunday. It will continue until this Sunday when the fiesta closes, with thousands expected to attend. The festival already claimed its first casualties early on this week. Three, two US citizens and one Spanish runner, were gored at the weekend and at least one needed surgery, according to emergency services. San Fermin has claimed the lives of at least 16 people since records began in 1910. Amidst reports of injuries being inflicted on runners, it can be tempting to overlook the suffering endured by animals forced to take part in the spectacle. The debate on San Fermin and bullfights in general is alive and well in Spain. The country continues to wrestle with whether to ditch the sport or retain what some see as a fundamental feature of Spanish culture. Activists AnimaNaturales and PETA staged protests against San Fermin in Pamplona on Friday. Those came as PACMA launched a campaign to stop the use of calves in bercerradas bullfights across the country. The Balearic Islands, Canary Islands and Cataluña have all tried to ban bullfighting altogether. As opposition gathers momentum, Spain may now have to consider calling time on San Fermin and other bull-related spectacles.

A somewhat older and more laid back event will be the 28th Festival Tendencias de Salobreña which is hosted by the local council from July 30 to August 2 with a selection of movies, workshops and bands. So far, just two groups have been confirmed as taking part in the Festival and on Thursday August 1 at 10pm, Guadalupe Plata, a trio who love blues rock will be performing songs from their latest self-titled album at the Municipal Auditorium. WHEN I become Prime Minister (it’s between you and me now, Boris!) there’ll be some new laws... about queuing. First off, airports. The thing that would make the most significant difference to queuing time is people being ready when they get to the top of the security queue. It puzzles me why coats and belts aren’t off, laptops out and toiletry bags ready by the time they get to the sorting table. It hardly comes as a complete surprise, they can see everyone else doing it, and as for the lady (sorry, ladies, but it IS often one of us!) who holds up everyone else with her umpteen liquids... And don’t get me started on queues in pubs. My next law as PM will be this: anyone wanting cocktails must stand in a separate queue. So people like me (ie impatient folk) won’t any longer be held up by people wanting a Strawberry Rosé Sangria or a Bahama Mama Spritzer that the barman’s never heard of and hasn’t a clue how to make. And then there’s the queue at the cash machine to get some money before you even get to the pub. You find you’re behind a couple who decide to have a no-holds-barred row af-

Can he hold proxy votes? I ask you to clarify the Horizontal Law concerning proxy voting at the AGM. In our community, one person has collected proxy votes from about 25 per cent of the other owners. As a result, he is usually able to have the deciding vote on matters discussed at the AGM. He makes this ‘collection’ every year. The other owners feel they are living in a dictatorship. Can you clarify? S J (Costa Blanca) The Horizontal Law provides that an owner YOU AND THE who cannot attend the LAW IN SPAIN AGM may delegate his vote by proxy to another person. This person need not even be a member of the community. A simple written notification to the president is sufficient. It is perfectly legal for one person to hold and vote various proxies. Sometimes a person will even use the proxy votes that he holds in order to be elected president. None of this is illegal. If you are opposed, you could try to collect your own number of proxy votes. This is raw democracy. If you feel that your interests have been harmed, you can go to court to impugn the results of the vote.

Taking care of your skin SKIN is one of the largest body’s organs. Caring for your skin can directly affect overall health. Skin acts like a protective shield and is most vulnerable to outside elements. Factors that affect it are: • Exposure to UV radiation in tanning beds • Exposure to chemical toxins in tobacco • Unprotected sun exposure for long time • Not getting enough rest, water or nutrition • Ageing Skin should be cleansed regularly, typically twice a day. Toner applied for oily skin, moisturiser for dry. It is recommended to get examined by a doctor or dermatologist annually for any changes if any irritations occur. It is important that the skin is protected from too much sun, as this could increase wrinkles or lead to skin cancer. Foods rich in antioxidants, including blueberries, avocados and wholegrain protect from free radical damage to keep the skin looking plump and healthy.
IN a ‘move with the times,’ it has been announced that Wimbledon umpires will stop referring to women athletes as ‘Ms,’ ‘Miss,’ or ‘Mrs,’ and instead refer to them by their last name - like they do in the men’s division. Really? A move with the times? I’m now officially calling bull***t on all this. Who cares? I bet not one lady tennis player has requested this. It’s outside pressure. Wimbledon is the last place where everything is a tradition. The players must wear all white; you drink Pimms and have strawberries and cream. Members of the armed forces show you to your seat. I need to go back in time for a bit. I want to use my Co-op divi number when I go shopping. I want my Green Shield stamps and my Embassy coupons that Mrs S actually used to pay for her driving lessons when she was 17. I want to try and hold a chocolate wagon wheel in one hand with my hot chocolate drink after going to the swimming baths. If I see a member of the opposite sex, or even
the same, I want to say, ‘Hi, you look nice today’ without fear of being treated like a sex offender. I want to be able to disagree or, in some cases, agree with something without the fear of being called racist, homophobic or misogynistic. I want my opinions to be heard without someone screaming at me. I want to walk through London at night without worrying I’m going to get stabbed just because I’m in the wrong place at the wrong time. I want to go out like I used to when I was young and just have fun with my mates without posting every single move on Facebook or Instagram. I want to be able to search the internet with the likes of WebCrawler and Lycos that just gave me the info I needed. Now things pop up for me to agree to and everything I do is tracked. I want to go to McDonald’s without 15 minutes later getting McDonald’s adverts on all my devices because I happen to have an iPhone. I guess I’m saying STOP!! Give me, and people like me, a break. Stop telling me what I need - I know what I need and I need to watch Wimbledon with the ladies still being called Ms, Mrs or Miss because it’s not doing any harm and I like a bit of tradition in my old age!

Madeira my dear THEY have a saying to describe the roads in Madeira: ‘If it’s not going up, it’s going down and if it’s not turning left, it’s turning right.’ For Madeira is a mountainous island in the Atlantic and the roads around the island are somewhat dramatic. However, the views, the fauna and the flora are phenomenal. Words cannot adequately describe the vistas that you encounter from virtually every one of the many bends in the roads. This island is an autonomous region of Portugal, as such, its official language is Portuguese and the cuisine is heavily influenced by the mainland. Down in the capital, Funchal, Madeira retains an air of
timeless grace, even when the population is boosted by the arrival of cruise ships in the harbour. One of the must do’s for anyone coming to this island is to have afternoon tea at Reid’s. Now called Belmond Reid’s Hotel, the hotel is somewhat grander on the interior than the exterior. The tea, sandwiches, scones and cakes are served in that timeless English way, with aplomb and style. Of course, there is the famous toboggan run. Passengers sit in a sleigh like toboggan, made of wicker, with two ‘pilots’ (who are always in white with a boater hat) at the rear. After their initial run to get you moving, you then hurtle down

the narrow streets of this town towards the coast. You are advised to have your tea at Reid’s after this and not before. Madeira is also famous as the home town of Christiano Ronaldo and you might see the odd reference to him on the island (like the fact that they have named the main airport Christiano Ronaldo Airport). Madeira is also famous for its wines and there are many traditional bodegas, where you can taste the distinct fortified wines, which
range from dry to sweet. Madeira is situated in the Atlantic Ocean to the north of the Canaries so has a very soft climate, with an average temperature of about 19 degrees, but with comparatively little variation between summer and winter (the average temperatures vary between 16 and 23 degrees), though it does have a fair amount of rainfall throughout the winter months. As befits an island, where 20 per cent of its GDP is tourism, there are
numerous hotels around the coast, though do not expect a Benidorm or Ayia Napa style nightlife, the island is more geared to a more genteel and relaxing holiday, Indeed you may want to consider staying in one of the Quintas da Madeira, which are a series of old manor houses, scattered along the south coast, which have been converted to luxurious and beautiful hotels often set in the lush and green countryside.

BARRY DUKE I HAVE a love/hate relationship with Facebook. I love it because it is an invaluable tool for directing traffic to two websites I operate: the atheist site the Freethinker and the humanist Pink Triangle Trust, a UK LGBT charity. But I loathe it because it serves as a conduit for millions of dotty posts by imbeciles sounding off about utterly insignificant things. Or, as Michel Euesden, CEO and founder of Euro Weekly News posted on my Facebook page recently, ‘people don’t half sweat the small stuff!’ She was commenting on an item I posted about an Asda customer in Plymouth who went into meltdown about some garden gnomes that had been decked out in rainbow colours. Such was his rage, the plods had to drag him out of the store. It was a clear-cut case of gnomophobia.
Sweating the small stuff Although people use Facebook to moan about all manner of things, what mainly seems to spark hysterical rants relate to LGBT issues. The most recent example of this can be found among the comments on the FB page of a crazy Christian outfit called the Illinois Family Institute. IFI vented its fury over the fact that Amazon had withdrawn books written by a ‘gay cure’ quack, the late Dr Joseph Nicolosi, a man whose work in ‘curing’ homosexuality left many lives in in tatters, and may well have led to a number of suicides. One comment read: ‘Wow. Just wow. It will only be months before the same pressures will come against those who sell (or distribute) Bibles. Where am I living?’ People ‘sweating the small stuff’ is, of course, not confined to Facebook. Newspapers can’t get enough stories of folk getting a stick up

into Asda because it ran out of his favourite 34p sardines. He told Chronicle Live that he has been left ‘suffering’ after stocks ran out. Then there was this headline on the StokeonTrentLive website: ‘It was so high you

overnight amid spat over allotment plot.’ As I was scrolling through dozens of ‘angry people’ reports it became clear that most folk who blow their gaskets tend to be older men. Impressive mix of vehicles An American Beauty from 1939. ‘WHAT a marvellous day out and what a lovely crowd of people…’ This was heard from a number of people at the Classic Car Club of Andalucia’s July classic car run and lunch held last Saturday. Very hot weather and clammy conditions had been expected by the Club but someone up there must have been smiling as the weather may not have been perfect for holidaymakers, but it was certainly perfect for a classic car tour! A cool day with a gentle breeze, not totally clear skies but clear enough and bright enough to encourage hoods to be down and the chance to revel in perfect, summer driving conditions. Although many CCCA members are away for the summer there was still an impressive turnout of 35 cars assembled at Venta Barranco, near Ojen, on Saturday morning to enjoy breakfast and a natter whilst CCCA ladies Jenny Binns and Angela Sharp organised the registration process. Club President, Ian Giles, organised this particular event and was ready, spot on time, at 11.00am to deliver a short briefing to all participants as they scanned their roadbooks, ready to make any last minute alterations or corrections and be warned of likely hazards en route. Not that anyone had any problems in this department but the briefing is such a traditional part of the start process ! An impressive mix of vehicles had gathered, all looking resplendent in the morning sunshine. Such cars as the 1953 Packard 8 of Jan Alvemark and David Geddes which had arrived from the USA only a few months ago and been driven from Nerja that morning aroused great interest.

There was the usual array of Mercedes sports cars from most decades including the fabulous 190SL of Antonio and Barbara Mendoza. The stunning 1969 China blue Pagoda SL of Ian Giles won a lot of attention sat next to the 1980 SL of Trevor Naylor and the 1970’s 380SL of Ted Williams. These Mercedes sports cars make the most amazing, useable classic cars in which to enjoy these events. They are intrinsically reliable, are relatively inexpensive to buy and in good supply. They are comfortable, have easy to use hoods, and, in the case of later cars, are electric. Some of them even have air conditioning and ABS brakes. For anyone wanting to join the world of classic cars these are a
great way to get started. The CCCA has always, since its inception, been a stalwart supporter of getting out and driving classic cars, seeing and enjoying the countryside in likeminded, good company as opposed to parking them somewhere and sitting admiring them! Whilst there is certainly room for this, and even the CCCA does this on rare occasions, it’s all about driving the cars. Any readers considering joining the fun can always contact the club for advice on what cars to buy to facilitate this, but any Mercedes of past decades is a good idea and, usually, not a bad investment. Let the fun begin... mopolitan, international feel about them. Saturday’s run had members enjoying themselves from the UK, Ireland, Spain, Mexico, Holland, Belgium, Switzerland, Sweden, the USA, Norway, Hungary, Germany and Morocco. International yes. Impressive - most certainly! More important, all get on so well which makes for a marvellous atmosphere or ‘ambiente’ within the Club. Dieter Schewe and Alex Lifftinger brought along three gorgeous American classics including a fabulous, and huge, 1960’s Ford Pick-up and a real American Ford Hot-Rod. Paul and Beate Kirwin had along their regular, and very pretty, MGB roadster, a car that no classic car group or event would ever be without. A true
1960’s British sports car icon. The Club stretches the envelope of what is acceptable as a classic and so also allows the participation of ‘modern’ classics. There is always lively discussion amongst classic car enthusiasts of what exactly is a ‘modern classic,’ but there is no doubt that such cars as the Jaguar XK and XKR range certainly qualify as such and the club has a lot of them amongst its members. In stark contrast, the event had two Bentley GTs out, another fine example of a modern classic, and the beautiful and hugely popular Morris Minor of Martyn and Sheila Quarterman. The two models parked together, Bentley and Morris, looked both incongruous yet delightful and much appreciat-
ed by all. The green 1960’s Morris Minor has, in fact, been with the club since it started, has done many, many events covering many kilometres and has never failed to finish, always arriving reliably with its younger and quicker cousins often behind it! The route for the day went from Ojen, just above the La Cañada commercial centre, past Monda towards Coin, by-passing the town on the fast A-355 to join the A-357 to the first coffee stop at La Herradura on the A-354 in Zalea. After coffee, crews enjoyed a fast but scenic road towards Casarabonela, turning off before there to cut over to Alozaina and on past Tolox towards Coin. The route by-passed Coin, near the old Eldorado film studios, before a well deserved Cava stop at Barranco Blanco on the outskirts of Alhaurin in the direction of Mijas. This is always a good time to get together, compare notes, swap stories and enjoy the company before heading off to lunch which, on this occasion, was near La Cala at the excellent El Jinete restaurante in La Cala Hills. The lunch here was absolutely first class, as was the service, and was a credit to Karen and Alex who were running it all, looking after hot and hungry crews with great aplomb and efficiency! All crews made it to the finish and all had, without exception, thoroughly enjoyed the day out. The Club has already had its monthly dinner at El Chaparral for July but will still continue

The Spanish rider led from pole to win the MotoGP on the track - the 10th time in succession he has won there in all competitions. This is a period of dominance at one track unprecedented in the modern era. The day had started not too well for fans and riders alike, with the gloomy weather meaning Warm Up had limited running time. But Marc Marquez made the most of it for Repsol Honda, setting the fastest time. When it came to the race, Marquez made his customary strong start to lead through Turn One as the lights went out for the 30lap German GP. I had putts that were rolling in from everywhere! By Dilip Kuner SPAIN has become the first country since the Soviet Union in 1991 to successfully defend the FIBA Women’s EuroBasket title. Their defeat of France in Belgrade was their fourth title and their third in the last four editions of the tournament. The French must be getting sick of the sight of the Spanish having lost to them in the finals of 1993, 2013, 2017 and now 2019. It was also France’s fourth straight silver medal. The Spanish team ran out 86-66 winners on the night, starting hot and never letting the French get a toe-hold in the match. Marta Xargay led the way brilliantly with 23 points and shooting five triples. Laura Gil also came close to a double-double with nine points and 10 rebounds. Astou Ndour had cause for double celebration, being crowned TISSOT MVP, while she was joined in the All-Star Five by Xargay. “What we are doing is amazing since it was the Soviet Union who last won two titles in a row a very long time ago,” said Spanish veteran, Laia Palau. “The way that we won was not expected. But I feel that after Russia in the QuarterFinals and the tough game against Serbia in the SemiFinals, we went into the final with a flow. We played without pressure and enjoyed the game. I am so proud,” she added.

THERE was a home winner for Spain on the fifth and final day of racing at the 2019 Para World Sailing Championships in Puerto Sherry, El Puerto de Santa María, Cadiz. Violeta del Reino was joined on the winners’ podium by Damien Seguin (FRA), Fabrizio Olmi and Davide Di Maria (ITA), and Piotr Cichocki (POL) to all be crowned world champions. It was a truly world event, with sailors from Norway, Canada, Great Britain, Australia, Chinese Taipei and Brazil filling the rest of the podium spots after Sunday’s series of finals. In the Hansa 303 Women’s class most of the six-boat Medal Race fleet were still in with a chance at a podium spot.
Sherry good result It was del Reino who clinched the title with a victory on the final race in her home country. “I feel great; I had a fun battle today which I really enjoyed and I’m very pleased to win gold,” she said to the World Sailing website. “I got a bad start and Alison (Weatherly) passed me. I thought ‘I’m done, but never mind, I’ll keep fighting,’ and I didn’t give up. “Halfway through I passed her and knew I had a chance; I held on and in the end it was all okay.
“I haven’t actually sailed here before, so it was new to me too, but being at home was nice and I got lots of support, which really helped.” Weatherly (AUS) crossed the line after del Reino to pick up silver, with last year’s winner Ana Paula Marques (BRA) taking bronze this time around.
