By Marco March EXPATS Paul and Jean Parkes have lived in Orihuela for 15 years - the last five of which they say they have been plagued by their neighbour who floods the roads outside with sewage. Jean has now been in hospital for the past week after apparently contracting e-coli. “He comes out with a bucket of stagnant water ridden with human faeces, usually at night and waters his plants with it,” Paul told EWN, he believes the reason for this unhygienic and dangerous practice is that, “his water was cut off five years prior”, so Paul suspects he tampered with a line that runs under the street. The neighbour also apparently uses the water to wash himself with. Other members of the community have also complained.

Hospitalised expat sparks sewage fears The legal firm Comunidades, which specialises in conflicts amongst neighbours has advised those with disputes such as this to refer to article 7.2 of the Ley de Propiedad Horizontal which submits that ‘The owner or occupant of the flat or premises is not allowed to develop in or around it, activities which are harmful to communal areas or cause annoyance, harm, illness, danger or illicit activities.’ Police have been notified but Paul said they seem indifferent to the situation. One officer apparently told Paul: “I don’t know how you

Thieves apprehended A FAMILY suspected of being prolific thieves have been detained by the Guard Civil of Alicante. The group of five are believed to be responsible for numerous thefts from industrial buildings in the Alicante and Murcia areas, and are alleged to have used the details of a dead man to sell stolen materials at recycling centres.
The group (mother, father, daughter, sonin-law and brother-in-law) reportedly focused on the theft of industrial tools, machinery and sheet metal. Police eventually caught up with the suspected perpetrators after they followed a ‘lookout’ who had been acting suspiciously. The car chase resulted in the main crashing into his own house.
Fraudster probe A RUSSIAN woman has been arrested by National Police in Torrevieja suspected of laundering currency worth more than €450,000. The 50-year-old could face in excess of seven years in jail back in her homeland, once she is extradited. Russian authorities issued an International Detention Order in April for her return to Russia. Officers from
the Organised Crime Group of Alicante had intelligence in June that she may be living locally. Subsequent investigations resulted in her arrest last week. Her list of alleged misdemeanours from the three years between 2014 and 2017 includes membership of a criminal organisation, banking fraud involving 32 million Russian rubles (€450,000), money
laundering and falsification of documents. However, she fled her home country before being judged and has since laid low in Spain, illegally. She is now at the disposal of the Central Court of Instruction number four of the National Court, which will be responsible for processing the Order of Extradition.

Booze battle THIS picture of revellers being doused with wine comes as northern Spain’s La Rioja region prepares to celebrate a festival themed around the drink on Saturday. The Battle of Wine takes place in the Riscos de Bilibio area of the region every year. Between 30,000 and 40,000 litres are used during the festival, according to estimates from organisers. The fiesta begins with a procession of its participants at 9am. Attendees carry jugs, bottles and other containers filled with red wine
to the Hermitage of San Felices de Bilibio. They are led into the battle by the mayor of Haro on horseback. Revellers then throw wine over one another until they are soaked before returning to Haro for more celebrations in the Plaza de la Paz. Mock bullfights featuring calves that are not killed are among the activities which take place during the rest of the day. The fiesta grew out of an annual pilgrimage in honour of San Felices de Bilibio which began during the
medieval era. The first account of wine being thrown came towards the end of the 19th century. The addition of revelry to the festival was at first controversial, but it became a standard feature by 1949 when it was first referred to as the Battle of Wine. The fiesta began drawing visitors from outside the area and Haro Council secured recognition for it as a festival of interest to tourists in 1965. It received national recognition in 2011.
Electrician shock

AN Elche electrician got a shock when he found himself detained for manipulating a multitude of supply meters. The 34-year-old had allegedly charged €200 each time for changing the characteristics of the meter, so that much lower consumption figures were recorded. According to the authorities, he had also been apprehended for similar offences back in 2013. The crimes for which he is detained include defrauding electric power and falsifying a commercial document. National Police believe he performed three or four manipulations in the Elche area every week, defrauding the energy supplier on each occasion. His tactic was to weld a copper wire between two terminals, thus diverting the electricity but replacing the security seals with counterfeits. So far, 14 examples of his alleged fraud have been uncovered, but it is believed there could be very many more.
SPANISH customs intercepted a ship off the Costa Blanca coast last week which had 10,000 kg of hashish hidden aboard. A six-month investigation culminated when two of the authority’s ships - one from Mallorca and one from Cartagena - boarded the merchant ship ‘ELG.’ The vessel, sailing under the flag of Moldova was 98 miles off the coast, before being escorted back to Cartagena. Not only had teams from different parts of Spain collaborated, but information supplied by French, Italian and Turkish authorities helped track the vessel as it went across the Mediterranean. The stash was made up of 350 bundles, ready for distribution to dealers in this country and beyond. This was the biggest seizure of the drug in recent times, as the war against drug smuggling between Africa, Europe and the Middle East becomes increasingly difficult.

Theatre evacuated AN earthquake on Saturday night shook the city of Lorca, in the west of the region of Murcia. Measuring 3.8 on the Richter scale, it was severe enough to have the Teatro Guerra Theatre evacuated. The National Geographic Institute recorded the ‘quake at exactly 10pm, when the streets would have been busy with people enjoying the mild summer air. in a similar event. Although the epicentre was located east of Lorca below Puerto Lumbreras, houses west of the city suffered damage. Reassuringly, the local fire brigade were quick to attend and even the new mayor, Diego Jose Mateus, was in attendance to calm the panic. The earthquake was so intense that aftershocks and tremors were recorded in locations as far north as Cartagena and as far south as Garrucha.
ATM theft gang caught A GANG of seven men have been arrested in connection with a series of cash-machine robberies using pick-up trucks. In total, they are suspected of nine robberies, seven vehicle thefts and the falsifying of registration plates. In one robbery at Archivel, it is alleged that the gang pointed firearms at witnesses while they carried out the brazen theft. The robberies had been carried out since January this year throughout Alicante, Albacete, Valencia and Murcia, leading officers to believe the gang were based in this area.
The suspects, four Albanians, two Serbs and a Spaniard, were from Santa Pola and Almoradi. Their modus operandi was allegedly to steal the necessary vehicle, swap number plates, bulldoze the ATM from its site and retrieve the cash from inside with radial saws. The Guardia Civil made the arrests after an attempted theft of a machine containing €48,000 on June 14. Subsequent house searches revealed €14,500 in cash, radial saws, ski masks, axes, clubs and balaclavas. All are in prison awaiting trial, expect for the local man who is suspected of concealing the vehicles used.

San Juan tragedy AN 83-year-old man celebrating San Juan in Torrevieja fell into a bonfire and had to be treated for burns. The Centro de Información y Coordinación de Urgencias (the Information and Coordination Centre of Emergency; CICU) r e c e i v e d t h e u rg e n t call that an 83-yearold man had fallen into the open flames at 12.30am on Monday morning. The gentleman was initially transferred to the Hospital of Torrevieja and later reportedly to the General Hospital of Alicante for burns and alcohol poisoning.

GREEN ENERGY: Saving money and the environment.
JAVIER CELDRAN, the Minister for the Environment has revealed the Murcia region now produces close to 10 per cent of all of Spain’s solar power, despite taking up only 3 per cent of the country’s area. With an increased awareness and commitment to ‘going green,’ there are now in excess of 5,000 solar power plants in the region. Celdran was visiting the Sinlimitsol
plant in Yecla on Sunday, looking at the operation consisting of 6,000 solar panels, enough to power 1,150 homes and reduce carbon dioxide emissions by an amazing 10,500 tons. Celdran went on to commend Murcia for leading the way out of Spain’s 17 regions for generating the most solar power per square kilometre. Indeed, only four other
(much larger) regions produce more power from the sun. More notably, if all renewable energy supplies were combined, the energy needs for half the households in the region could be satisfied.

KEEP COOL: Find relief from the heat.
THE Spanish Met office has warned that a heatwave from the Sahara will leave the Alicante region sweltering until Monday. Six days of intense heat were expected to start yesterday (Wednesday), with the hottest temperatures forecast for this weekend. These are expected to reach up to 39 degrees in the shade in inland areas. Best advice is to either stay in or head for the coast, which should see cooler figures of around 32-33 degrees. How-
ever, the degree of relative humidity will make it feel around 39 to 40 degrees. Meteorologists are forecasting a long summer, with July predicted to be particularly hot. This is the first of four heatwaves forecast for this summer. The authorities are warning people to keep out of the heat and to stay cool. The Guardia Civil has also reminded people to take extra care of their pets and to never leave them shut in a car.

A GROUP of local environmental campaigners have denounced what it describes as over-farming in the area, where as many as three million unwanted lettuces are being left to rot. El Ll ano and Um br i a del Factor, 120 million litres of precious water is used to irrigate the fields - as much as leaving a kitchen tap running for 38 years. The gr oup - f or m ed i n 2017 - estimate that agriculture uses more than a third of the entire water supply stored in the Segura basin every year, and insists that the overexploitation of this essential resource should be limited as much as possible.

THE Guardia Civil of Torrevieja and Pilar de la Horadada have arrested three men linked with house break-ins in the Campoanor neighbourhood of Orihuela Costa. During December, a noticeable rise in burglaries throughout the area was reported, so covert surveillance
was put in place. That action quickly paid dividends as one perpetrator was caught and arrested on December 13, and - after help from the public - two more thieves were caught in March and June, respectively. It transpires that the alleged burglars used the cover of the dark winter
nights and the adjoining beach to make haste their escape, later selling their spoils in nearby second-hand shops. The three charged with robbery and robbery with violence and intimidation are Algerian and Spanish, aged between 25 and 31. All are awaiting trial.
Tragic drowning A SWIMMER drowned at Playa Galua beach in the La Manga area of Mar Menor lagoon on Saturday afternoon. Three bathers found themselves in difficulty swimming off the beach. Two of the swimmers managed to get rescued f r om t he choppy condi t i ons, but a Sl ovaki an wom an drowned in her efforts to get out of the sea. Medical staff were quick to arrive, but their efforts to revive her were in vain.

British pilot arrested in connection with the death of footballer POLICE have arrested a 64year-old British man in relation to the death of Argentinian footballer Emiliano Sala, 28. David Henderson from York was held by police yesterday morning on suspicion of
manslaughter by an unlawful act after the plane he was meant to be flying crashed off the coast of Alderney, Dorset on January 21. Dorset police have since released Mr Henderson from
custody and he is under investigation. Emiliano, a former youth footballer at Mallorcan side Soledad de Palma, was travelling to the UK after completing his signing to the Premier League to play for Cardiff City when the accident happened. Mr Henderson had been asked by Emiliano’s management to fly the footballer to the UK from Nantes in France, however he pulled out at the last minute, drafting in David Ibbotson to fly the plane instead. David was a part-time pilot and not qualified to take passengers. However during the flight the plane hit bad weather and crashed into the English Channel, killing both Mr Ibbotson, 59, and Mr Sala whose body was discovered on February 3. Mr Henderson was arrested Wednesday morning (June 19) for manslaughter for handing the flight over to an unqualified pilot.

No pedigree problems IBERIA has passed its ‘Spanishness’ test. Antonion Vazque, president of IAG, announced that the Spanish airline would not lose its right to operate in the European Union after a ‘no deal’ Brexit. AEG, which also owns Vueling, British Airways, Aer Lingus and Level, was asked last April to present contingency plans to Spain, Ireland, France and Austria. All have been approved by the respective governments, although the last word goes to the European Commission.

from taking their seats in the national parliament. This, it was felt, could be a sign of things to come, confirming the PSOE hierarchy’s desire to keep Iglesias at arm’s length. The PSOE’s Organisation Secretary, Jose Luis Abalos, confirmed that if necessary Sanchez will go to the Investiture debate without having obtained sufficient backing to form a government. Should that fail, he will have another two months to try again or call another election, something that no party wants but which, paradoxically, could finally benefit Sanchez.
European ambitions FOREIGN MINISTER Josep Borrell headed the PSOE’s voting list in the European elections, although his future in Brussels is still undefined. Borrell leaves the Ministry this
coming Friday and told reporters that any future post was “subordinate to the project” although it is known that Borrell wants one of the top jobs. He was president of the Euro-
pean Parliament between 2004 and 2007, but following Borrell’s good showing in the European elections, Madrid hopes that the time has come for Spain to take a more prominent role in Brussels.

Wolf pack guilty of rape says Spain’s Supreme Court FIVE members of the infamous Wolf Pack have been found guilty of rape after the Supreme Court overturned a previous decision. The defendants have been jailed for 15 years each and been forbidden from contacting or approaching the victim for 20 years. They will also have to pay her €100,000 compensation. A regional court had acquitted the men of rape, but convicted them of the lesser charge of sexual assault. José Ángel Prenda, Alfonso Cabezuelo, Antonio Manuel Guerrero, Jesús Escudero and Ángel Boza were originally given nine years each, plus five years’ probation and ordered to pay €10,000 each to the woman. Their victim, who was 18
at the time, appealed the decision, as did the defendants, who called themselves ‘the Wolf Pack’ in a social media messaging group. The men raped the woman in a doorway in the early hours of the morning at the 2016 San Fermin festival. A rape charge in Spain requires the victim to show there was evidence of intimidation or violence. The lower court decided the woman was passive and did not struggle. But the Supreme Court has decided otherwise. In its judgement the court said that the victim had been subjected to “a genuinely intimidating scenario in which she never consented to the sexual acts perpetrated by the accused. “This intimidating situa-
tion led the victim to adopt an attitude of submission, doing what the perpetrators told her to do, despite the distress and intense strain… The accused took advantage of this to commit acts against the victim’s freedom, among them at least 10 sexual assaults.” These included rape. In a tweet, Spain’s acting deputy prime minister and equalities minister, Carmen Calvo, said that this decision “recognised the credibility of the victim.” She added that the decision was compatible with a governmental proposal to change the law. The convicted men can appeal to the Spanish Constitutional Court and then the European Court of Justice.

THE Supreme Court in Spain has convicted Enrique Blasco of the attempted murder of his mother after he allegedly tampered with a gas valve in her house in order to suffocate her. He will serve nine years in prison. Police were alerted to the Blasco residence where Enrique was taking care of his mother in his sisters’ absence. The neighbours were first to report the smell of gas. Enrique later declared that he had not noticed the smell and was having problems with the boiler.

him. They claimed there was a distinct sound of velcro coming from behind the door when he eventually opened up, which was later deemed to be a means by which to seal off the room so that no oxygen would enter. Mrs Blasco had Alzheimer’s and was reportedly unaware of the situation taking place. The court came to the conclusion that Enrique was prepared to take his own life as well as his mother’s. He was sentenced to jail and his appeal was rejected.

FCC under investigation for bribery ANDORRAN authorities are investigating Barcelona- based business group Fomento de Construcciones y Contratas (FCC) for allegedly paying bribes amounting to €434 million to dignitaries in Latin America between 2010 and 2014. The multinational construction hegemon is accused of concealing a payment scheme in its contracts with Panamanian lawyer Mauricio Cort, who was sentenced to 48 months in prison for his role in the Odebrecht Plot last year. Cort reportedly played a pivotal role in both companies’ alleged
transgressions as is shown by numerous large payments tracked back to them in the BPA’s (Banca Privada d’Andorra) records. He apparently received in excess of €17 million for each contract he undertook with the FCC. Whilst the FCC have covered their tracks by using intermediaries to process potentially incriminating transactions, the investigating bodies consider them beneficiaries and thus will continue to look into payments made to high-ranking figures such as the children of Ricardo Martinelli, former president of Panama.

TRAVEL FEARS: Summer tourists could be left stranded after latest strike threats.
Brit travel plans strike chaos BRITISH tourists flying this summer to Spain could have their travel plans ruined after threats of a new wave of strikes by BA pilots over pay. British Airways have announced plans to vote on possible strike action if their pay demands are not met. Three unions which include over 40,000 employees have rejected the latest pay deal offered to them by the company and therefore a vote will take place on whether to enforce strikes throughout the summer.
BA staff have joined forces with fellow unions, Unite and GMB, to tackle their grievances. BA pilots receive an annual salary of £150,000 per year along with an hourly rate whilst in the air. However the union has been in talks with the airline since November last year but talks have since broken down. The latest offer from the airline has been deemed as ‘too little, too late’ by the union.

Do you know where you are domiciled? Are you sure? For British expatriates, understanding domicile is an important element of estate planning. It is domicile, not residence, that determines your liability for UK inheritance tax. Domicile is a complex and incredibly adhesive UK common law concept. The basic rule is that a person is domiciled in the country in which they have their permanent home - regarded as your ‘homeland’. However, you can remain UKdomiciled even after living abroad for many years. There are three types of domicile under English law: • Domicile of origin - where a child takes their father’s (or single/ unmarried mother’s) domicile (not necessarily their country of birth). • Domicile of dependence - applies to women married before 1974 (whose domicile will mirror their husband’s) as well as minors and other legal dependents. • Domicile of choice - acquired by moving permanently to

While changing domicile is possible, this needs to be a carefully considered process as there are no set rules - much depends on your particular circumstances and intentions. If challenged by HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC), the onus is on you - or, rather, your heirs - to prove you were non-UK domicile at the date of death. Changing domicile To acquire a domicile of choice you must be physically present
and tax resident in your new country, intend to live there permanently, and not foresee any reason to return to the UK. You need to sever as many ties as possible with the UK, as HMRC will look for any indication that you see Britain as your homeland and may return one day. Stating in your will that you wish to be buried in the UK, for example, could work against you. Even if you adopt a domicile of choice outside the UK, it can take up to four years to shed a UK domicile for inheritance tax purposes. HMRC may treat you as UK-domiciled if you: • were UK resident for 15 of the last 20 tax years • return to Britain for more than a year (if the UK is your domicile of origin and place of birth) • move to a third country - until you can demonstrate you have established a new domicile of choice.
The effect of domicile on inheritance taxes Anyone who is deemed UKdomiciled is liable to 40% inheritance tax on their worldwide assets (since April 2017, this includes all UK residential property). There is an individual tax-free allowance of £325,000, transferable to your spouse or civil partner, plus a £125,000 ‘family home allowance’ (increasing to £150,000 this April and £175,000 in April 2020). As well as UK tax, you could be liable to Spanish succession tax. However, in most cases the UK would give credit for the tax paid overseas to avoid double taxation on the same asset. Non-UK domiciles are only liable to UK inheritance tax on assets situated in the UK.

IN EUROPE: Listeriosis is said to be under-diagnosed.
Listeriosis spreading THE European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) have issued a statement saying they believe Listeriosis, an infection usually resulting from poor food hygiene, is vastly under-diagnosed in Europe. Listeria monocytogenes, the bacterium often responsible for gastroenteritis is under close surveillance in the Instituto de Salud Carlos III and the Hospital Universitario Ramón y Cajal in Madrid. They have published
an academic journal article together demonstrating a rise in hospitalisations for the disease. Some of which are serious cases of septicaemia, meningitis and even death. Some 23 million Europeans reportedly get sick from food related illnesses per year, causing concern for the World Health Organisation (WHO). The EU has taken measures to try to quell the spread of food contaminants such as one new
regulation introduced in February that requires seeds, unpasteurised fruit and vegetable juices to be more rigorously tested for Listeria monocytogenes. Young and elderly people with deficient immune systems are more at risk of contracting the disease. The collaborative article ‘Eurosurveillance’ found that over half of all cases of listeriosis were recorded in those suffering from some sort of immunosuppressive disease.

Embassy assailants’ plea for freedom AFTER allegedly breaking into the North Korean Embassy in Madrid on February 22 and harassing, gagging and beating officials, the Free Joseon (Free Korea) group is now hoping that Spain will drop the charges pinned on them. An alleged member of the seven-man group now based in the USA gave an interview on Fox news declaring the assailants ‘heroes’ for their bravery and commitment in an effort to help North Korean nationals working in the embassy to defect. They were however unsuccessful in their efforts as none of the diplo-
mats left with the gang. Hong Chang, the leader of the Free Joseon group was hoping to escape prosecution and extradition for the criminal acts committed under Spanish law. His lawyer argued that ‘political acts’ such as these are exempt from extradition sentences and persecution in Western democracies. North Korea holds a very different view of what Chang and his accomplices were doing in the embassy. They filed complaints of missing technology and urged the United States to charge them with stealing confidential information.

Yobs corner nudist THE Guardia Civil arrested five men for harassing a woman on a Cullera (Valencia) nudist beach. The woman was heading for the car park when five men, aged between 45 and 50, allegedly began to pester her with insulting sexual innuendos. They cornered her as she drew level with them and began to abuse her, the woman maintained, but she reached the car park, seeking help from her partner. The five men then got into their own vehicle, manoeuvring abruptly and allegedly attempting to run her down. The five men were later identified thanks to the description the woman gave the Guardia Civil and four were found to have police records. All now face sexual abuse charges.

Two men hurt in falls in Ibiza THE men were both seriously injured after two separate falls within the space of three hours in the Roca Llisa and Platja d’en Bossa areas. The first occurred at 1am when a 43-yearold Frenchman fell whilst walking. He suffered a fractured vertebrae and was transferred by 062 to the Nuestra Señora del Rosario Polyclinic. The second incident happened at around 5am when a 53-year-old from Austria fell from a height of around one-metre suffering a spinal injury. He was rushed to the same clinic where both men are being treated by the Neurosurgery unit.

Tourists warned to ‘check their change’ THE Guardia Civil has reissued a notice to tourists to keep a look out for Egyptian and Mexican currency working its way into Spanish circulation. The Mexican Five Peso coin and the Egyptian Pound coin are very similar to the Two Euro coin and on first look the difference would go unnoticed. However the number of ‘foreign’ coins making their way into circulation at the A COURT in Sevilla which specialises in cases of violence against women remanded in custody a 20-year-old male for allegedly attacking his 15-year-old girl friend. Officers from the National Police and emergency services were called to a street in the city after a man was seen to smash a girl’s head against a shop window, breaking the glass. Whilst paramedics attended to the girl, the officers chased a suspect through the

Tourists are being asked to inspect their change when purchasing items to make sure they don’t receive one of the coins unintentionally. Violent attack streets until they caught him. The girl who suffered serious injuries to her head and shoulder including a
broken nose is reported to have said that she had known the man for two years and had gone out with him, but that night he had seen her with friends and attacked her. Although there is no prior history of arrest for violence, the court decided after interviewing witnesses that the alleged assault was so serious that the young man, whose family come from the Dominican Republic, would be held without bail until the trial.
Missing 74-year-old found on roof MARIA HEREDIA TORRES had been missing for two days before she was found of the roof of a housing block in Malaga City. She suffers from severe Alzheimer’s and it is thought she became disorientated and made her way up onto the roof where she fell and couldn’t get back up again. She is now recovering at home with her family after the ordeal.

He said, “We must create our future together,” during his last celebration of the Queen’s birthday in Madrid, as his six years in Spain comes to an end in August. More than 700 people celebrated the strong links that unite the UK and Spain at the Queen’s Birthday Party, a party to celebrate the 93rd birthday of Queen Elizabeth II, who in 2019 also celebrates 67 years as sovereign. The party took place in the British Ambassador’s official residence in Madrid under the banner of ‘Creating our future’ and brought together personalities from the worlds of politics, business and society, such as the Minister of Science, Innovation and Universities, Pedro Duque; the Secretary of State for Tourism, Isabel Maria Oliver; the Congressional spokesperson for Ciudadanos, Inés Arrimadas; and the Vice-President of Banco Santander, Matías RodríguezInciarte. In his welcome address, HMA Simon Manley underlined the excellent ties between both countries and called for the continuation of this special relationship in the future. “We have shared challenges such as climate change, the ageing population, Islamist terrorism and the digital revolution. Inside or outside the European Union we have to tackle them together,” emphasised the Ambassador. Spain and the UK have trade flows of more than €62,000 million per year. More than 300,000 UK nation-

Michel said: “We are proud to be British and so thankful to be living in Spain. What a brilliant combination, a fantastic community, fabulous mixture.” The guests joined Simon Manley and his wife Maria Isobel as they marked the last time he will celebrate the Queen’s birthday as Ambassador. Wishing the Queen a happy birthday, Michel added: “The British Ambassador Simon Manley and his fantastic team throughout Spain have done the Queen proud. “Congratulations to the Embassy and Consulate, who have really shown our Spanish friends how to party.”

This was the last Queen’s Birthday Party in Madrid for Simon Manley who, in August, will hand over to the new Ambassador Hugh Elliott, who has been Director of Communication in the Government’s Department for

New residency requirements LIVING in Spain can bring with it an array of issues which may not have been encountered when living in the UK. Two held after alleged dispute POLICE were called to a late night disturbance last Thursday between a couple on the Antonio Machado promenade in the Huelin district of Malaga. As officers arrived they stopped a man who was trying to leave the scene. Upon questioning, the man stated he had been in an altercation with his partner and she had attacked him by biting him and scratching him. The woman was later questioned, and along with witness statements both were arrested and taken into custody. It later emerged the man had a restraining order placed on him for a previous incident with the woman and had therefore breached its terms . They were both taken to a health centre for treatment.
Burglars hit hard times IN the first quarter of 2019 police in Gijรณn - reportedly the safest region in Spain - have noticed a sharp decrease in burglaries according to their crime statistics base. The 18 per cent drop is relative to the first quarter of last year when 100 homes were broken into. Before April of this year, 82 were recorded. Officials in Gijรณn claim the reason for the crack-down on crime is due to increased interrogation and investigation on a regional level.

ALFRED BOSCH: The Catalan Minister formally apologises to the Mexican people.
Cataluña apologises to Mexican people THE Catalan region of Spain has formally apologised for it’s involvement in the 16th century conquests of the land now known as Mexico. The government of the autonomous region offered the apology despite Spain’s refusal to do so. The apology is in relation to the killings and other offences carried out during the invasion of the area towards the indigenous people. The statement was issued by the Catalan Minister for Foreign Action, Alfred Bosch, during a speech at the National Institute of Indigenous People (INPI). A letter from Mexican president Lopez Obrador asking for resolution from both
the King of Spain as well as Pope Francis prompted the apology. Bosch stated: “What is clear is that the conquest and colonisation introduced discrimination and marginalisation to Mexico.” Bosch’s statement was greatly welcomed by the Mexican president, and goes to further strengthen relations between the country and the Catalan region, with Obrador a public supporter of Cataluña’s independence. However the Spanish government remains steadfast in their refusal to apologise, and went on to condemn the region for their approach.

Toddler killer jailed By Dilip Kuner A MAN who brutally battered his partner’s 18-month-old toddler son to death has been jailed for more than 27 years. A jury at Sevilla Provincial Court found Ezequiel TR guilty of continually maltreating and eventually murdering the defenceless child. They had heard that on April 23, 2016, the guilty man took the 18-month-old to his room when he started crying. As he would not stop, the murderer grabbed him by the arms and brutally shook him, then hit his
head three times against a flat surface. The child died a few hours later. Now Ezequiel TR has been jailed for a total of 27 years, seven months and 15 days at a sentencing hearing. The victim’s mother, Isabel RM, has been imprisoned for four years, seven months and 15 days after being found guilty of mistreating both the toddler and her elder son, who was three years old at the time. In addition, the convicted will have to compensate the surviving child €130,000 for the death of his brother and another €2,000 for ill-treatment.

part of the celebrations. Another event which attracted a number of entrants and spectators was the reintroduced Feria de Sevillanas with many ladies in particular, dressing in their finest, some of whom arrived on horseback.
Raiders caught OFFICERS of the Alicante Guardia Civil have arrested seven men accused of ripping nine cash machines out of walls in the Costa Blanca and Valencia. T h e g a n g a l l e g e d ly s to le mo b ile cranes and used these to remove the cash machines from the walls of the banks and stole thousands of euros. The robberies started earlier this year but in their last raid, those involved were filmed and police quickly apprehended them, recovering €48,000 in cash and discovered where they lived
and the location where they stored the stolen vehicles. Houses in a number of areas including Catral and Almoradi were raided an d o ffi c e rs dis c ove re d a furthe r €14,500 in cash, stolen vehicles with false number plates, axes, clubs, ski masks and walkie talkies. Six of the men, four Albanians and two Serbs have been remanded in custo d y w h ils t the s e ve nth ma n, a Spaniard involved in hiding the vehicles was allowed bail.

Tourist or non-Spanish residents will also assist in the processing of the complaint, informing them of their rights etc. The new additions have been brought onboard to carry out non-work placements (NLP) in Orihuela Costa as translators and interpreters, which will serve as support for the Guardia Civil personnel located in the municipal office. The City Council of Orihuela has an agreement with the Ministry of the Interior for which it provides the Foreign Tourist Assistance Service (SATE).

Corpus Christi procession HUNDREDS of people took to the streets of Orihuela to celebrate the real presence of the body and blood of Jesus Christ in the Blessed Sacrament. Floats, music and stilt walkers made their way through the town in a religious ceremony that dates back to the 14th century, however the celebration has been reinvented over the past few decades to bring it up-todate and to appeal to a whole new audience. The procession was presided over by Bishop of the Diocese of Orihuela-Alicante, JesĂşs Murgui from the Cathedral of Orihuela. Corpus Christi is traditionally celebrated 60 days after Easter Sunday on the Thursday after Trinity Sunday.

Help for SAS THE Rojales Pantomime Group produces an annual show with ‘profits’ being donated to a local charity. This year’s show was Camelot the Panto and the sum of €200 was recently given to the Stroke Association Spain (SAS) which meets at the Casa de Cultura in Benijofar. The group is open to all stroke sufferers and their carers, providing a safe and therapeutic environment that aims to facilitate stroke recovery. As well as much needed donations the SAS also welcomes volunteers who have the skills, knowledge and commitment to support their activities. Due to the large British population in the area, whilst the Association recognises the importance of the local health service, it was created as a self-support group for English speakers. Ciudad Quesada NEWS THE Ciudad Quesada is part of Rojales and was the dream of Orihuela developer Justo Quesada Samper who purchased a huge amount of land in 1972. As his dream was realised, the town grew and by 1989 even had its own town hall, although it still falls under Rojales. There is a contrast between the new and the old as Rojales traces its history back to the Bronze Age via Roman occupation and then the inevitable capture and rule by the Moors between the 8th and 13th century before being retaken by the Christian Spanish. The town is currently enjoying the popular Moors and Christians Festival which will continue until July 7, but last Sunday saw the spectacular offering of flowers to Saint Peter the Apostle, Patron

Saint of Rojales. Large numbers of people watched as their neighbours paraded through the streets, escorting the statue of the saint as the local priest received offerings of flowers from young and old alike. Most interesting was the fact that so many residents dressed in medieval costume and were seen at the parish church guarding the statue as it was carried out of the church and started its procession along the streets of the town. After the wild exuberance of the Correfoc celebration, which saw demons stalking the streets letting off fireworks, this was a much quieter and more peaceful event which still remembered the invasion of the Moors and the return to Christianity for this and many other parts of Spain.

1,000 police officers in drugs raid
RAID: Huge police operation in Barcelona. MORE than 1,000 police officers took part in a massive antidrugs operation that led to 50 arrests in Barcelona. Regional force Mossos d’Esquadra were joined by National Police and the city’s Guardia Urbana as they targeted criminals in the Raval district. They searched 35 homes, warehouses and other premises, including a restaurant. They found three kilos of heroin, two
kilos of cocaine, 2,180 pills of illicit drugs, cash and knives, according to the head of the Mossos in Ciutat Vella, Antoni Sànchez. The arrests made are a major blow against the drugs underworld. Police say they represent a group that had moved into a vacuum left when 15 ‘narcoflats’ were raided and 30 people arrested last year. Police say the new network
consisted mainly of people of Pakistani origin who normally made a living selling drinks in the street and popularly known as ‘lateros.’ Investigators say they had taken advantage of the disappearance of the ‘narcoflats’ where drugs were sold and consumed - to become one of the main groups selling drugs on the promenade and leisure areas of Ciutat Vella.

Spain escapes EU law fine
SPAIN has been ‘let off’ an €80 million fine for delays in implementing its new mortgage law. The European Commission has informed the European Court of Justice that the law has now been brought in correctly, so it is withdrawing the case and possible fine. Political instability, the situation and repeated elections have been blamed for the delay in implementing the legislation that brings Spain into line with EU regulations, which should have come into force in March 2016.

Trump threat over Google tax PRESIDENT Donald Trump has told Spanish PM Pedro Sanchez the US will react “very harshly” if plans for a ‘Google Tax’ go ahead. The warning came on the eve of this week’s G20 summit and is aimed at Spain and France in particular, as well as other European nations who may consider such a charge. US Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer, who is the main advisor, negotiator and spokesman for Trump in the area of trade, was speaking to a Senate committee when he issued the warning.
By Dilip Kuner He said that “President Trump will respond very harshly” against European countries that insist on applying tax pressure that, in his opinion, “discriminatorily penalise American companies.” The US ambassador to Spain, Duke Buchan, wrote to the Spanish government last November to ask that a proposed new tax be withdrawn, saying that Sanchez should not try to impose such a tax without international agreement within the Organisation for Economic Development Cooperation (OECD).
The government has said that it plans to create a new tax as soon as possible because it considers it necessary for Google and other digital platforms to pay more than they currently do. It hopes to raise €1.2 billion annually. Nadia Calviño, Spain’s Minister of Economy and Business, said: “It is a priority to jointly address the special challenges posed by the taxation of new business models of digital platforms. The government assures that this declaration does not change the plan to create the new tax.”
BASQUE automotive group CIE Automotive has spent 58 million acquiring two companies dedicated to the machining of parts in Celaya, Guanajuato State (Mexico). It has bought Maquinados de Precisión de México and Cortes de Precisión de México, whose Ebitda (gross operating margin) is expected to reach €16 million by the end of 2019. Jesús María Herrera, CEO of CIE Automotive, explained that the purchase will allow it to expand significantly physically and commercially in the future. The companies are being paid for in cash.

Price rise slowdown INFLATION in Spain dipped on the back of lower than expected electricity and fuel prices in May to a year-onyear rate of 0.8 per cent from 1.5 per cent the previous month, according to the National Statistics Office. MONEY SPINNER: Sports make big contribution.
Sports spend on the rise SPORTS tourism was worth €2.44 billion to Spain in 2018, up 10 per cent on the previous year. According to figures in the Annual Sports-Related Statistics report from the Ministry of Culture and Sport, €1.41 billion of that came from visitors to the country, compared with the €1.26 billion spent in 2017. Tourists resident in Spain spent €1.03 billion on sport-related trips, compared with €957 million the previous year. In total, 4.1 per cent of all trips made for leisure, recreational or holiday purposes by Spanish residents were for sports purposes. The number of sports clubs increased in 2018 to 67,512, a rise of 0.7 per cent in 2017.
Big exposure THE eurozone financial system, including banks, investment funds, pension funds and insurance companies, has a total exposure to companies affected by anti-emissions regulations of €720 billion, says the ECB.
Breaks price SOCIAL media use, checking personal emails plus unscheduled coffee and cigarette breaks cost Spanish companies €3.3 billion a year in lost time, according to a study by work analysts Adecco, although unions say breaks can increase productivity.
Call for closer banking ties SPAIN’S central bank has called for closer banking ties within the EU and in particular a euro zone deposit insurance scheme and stabilisation fund. It says that Europe as a whole faces significant financial risks from ageing populations, low productivity, high national debt and a Brexit-related economic slow-down. The Bank of Spain said that the European De-
posit Insurance Scheme (EDIS) would make the financial sector more resilient and be the final part to a full banking union within the eurozone. Speaking in a presentation of the bank’s annual report Governor Pablo Hernandez de Cos said: “It is necessary to complete (the) revision of the Economic and Monetary Union to avoid the single currency still being exposed to tensions in case of high-calibre disturbances.”

Too many jobless in Spain THE Spanish jobs sector remains one of the biggest problems within the country’s economy. The unemployment rate is expected to continue to fall, but is predicted to take until 2021 before reaching around 12 per cent, according to the Bank of Spain. After a five-year slump in the economy from 2008 to 2013 unemployment soared to almost 27 per cent, but has since fallen to 4.7 per cent in the first quarter of this year. “While it’s true that the unemployment rate has fallen significantly since the economic recovery began, it is still very high,” said Governor of the central bank Pablo Hernandez De Cos.

Lower AVE costs call THE current cost structure for operating high-speed trains should be reformed as the market is opened up to competitors to ensure lower ticket prices. This is the conclusion of the Comisión Nacional de los Mercados y la Competencia (CNMC). In a report is sees the need to ‘modify in depth’ the fees that infrastructure owner Adif charges for the use of t r a c k s a n d s t a t i o n s . L a s t y e a r, Renfe paid it €1.228 billion. Adif’s liabilities add up to around €18 billion, and its only major source of income is the fees it receives. The regulator does not go into depth on how the lowering of fees w i l l a ff e c t t h e f i n a n c i n g o f t h e debt. But it considers the setting of fees needs to be pitched right if competitors are to enter the market and reduce ticket prices. The body, chaired by José María Marín Quemada, says that royalties will be ‘key’ in the design of commercial strategies carried out by operators that break Renfe’s monopoly, such as the French company SNCF, which has already shown its interest in operating in Spain. in December 2020 to provide a better service for passengers and generate resources. This will help capitalise on the investment already made in what is the second biggest high speed network in the world.

Lagging behind in RD&I SPAIN is the only country wi t hi n t he EU 5 - t he t op economic nations - to have reduced spending on RD&I. The Independent Fiscal Accountability Authority (AIReF) has said that ‘total investment has fallen between 2009 and 2016 by 10.2 per cent,’ in contrast to total investment growth of 17 per cent amongst the 28 countries of the European Union. In contrast to Spain, the ot her EU 5 nat i ons i ncreased RD&I expenditure in the same period. In the case of France this was by 10.3 per cent, while in Italy the increase was 12 per cent. In the United Kingdom the rise was close to 15 per cent. By far away the leading country was Germany, where the figure reached a remarkable 24 per cent.

LEAPY LEE SAYS IT OTHERS THINK IT I TRULY can’t make up my mind whether society reflects the media, or the media reflects society. I suppose, when it comes down to it, they’re all actually in it together. I remember the 50’s, when BBC radio comprised the Light and Third programmes and the Home Service. In those early days, they flatly refused to play anything with a modern ‘beat,’ and utterly scorned the new, and to their mind, utterly degenerate ‘Rock n Roll.’ The presenters wore dinner jackets and tuxes to the studio - even though they couldn’t be seen. Television was also strictly controlled. Dress codes were strongly adhered to, Elvis Presley was only filmed from the waist up, and even mild swear words were utterly taboo. After the Epilogue, the National Anthem always preceded the ‘test’ card which followed at around midnight. (Many families stood to attention in their living rooms while God Save the King rang out!) Was it all a good or a bad thing? Well I’m sure we all have our own opinions about that. It was however a fairly accurate reflection of society as it was during that post war recovery period. A time when we had absorbed all the violence we could stomach, and patriotism was paramount to those who had survived the conflict. Fast forward to the present day. With the advent of scores

of channels and wavelengths - all trying to create their own money tree - the first thing that goes completely by the board is any semblance of responsible or moral obligations. In fact, in their endeavours to attract more attention, some of the offerings of today’s media
are almost beyond belief. (‘OAP’s Behaving Badly’ simply pales by comparison!) I recently heard some radio station play a song whose lyrics comprised of nothing but the F word, chanted over and over again. There is a TV ‘dating’ programme that actually presents couples
to each other stark naked. Apparently some male contestants are picked as possible partners merely for the size of their manhood! Cilla must be positively spinning! Although I have never viewed the Mallorca show, to me the rules for the highly popular ‘Love Island’ however, truly do take the whole tin. This is the ‘contestants’ code’ insisted on by the producers of a programme that has been voted one of the most popular reality shows ever. Rule 1. No masturbating. 2. No total nudity. 3. No sex while drunk. And, in an almost ludicrous effort to take the moral and hygienic high ground - rule four and five informs the contestants that there is to be ‘no smoking’ on camera and that ‘condoms must be used at all times’! And if all that doesn’t reflect the attitude and priorities of our modern society, nothing does. And finally what a pleasure to watch the Ladies World Cup. A chance to really enjoy the game of football; instead of enduring a bunch of posturing, egotistical prima donnas, more worried about their hair styles and bank balances than the beautiful game. The story I spotted was that scientists have discovered that coffee doesn’t just keep you alert; it keeps you alive. As little as two cups of coffee a day can raise your life expectancy by as much as TWO years, reducing the risk of cancer, heart problems and even neurodegenerative brain diseases. Wow! Well, not exactly another MOBO study (Masters Of the Bleeding Obvious), but I’d really love to read the methodology section of this ‘research.’ What nonsense, and how did they come up with such a random number even if TWO years is in anyway believable. Walking every day will do that for you and more. And it’s ridiculous to ignore the number of other variables in someone’s dietary habits and lifestyle to focus simply on a single item. And next week: too much coffee will be bad for your haemorrhoids! Just what ARE these researchers drinking to come up with

LEGALLY SPEAKING Can they pay the president? I live on an urbanisation of 100 properties. Only 12 properties are inhabited by permanent residents. Seven of these have previously acted as president. At the end of this year our president and vice president are standing down and there are no volunteers for the positions. We were informed at our last AGM that, if there were no volunteers, the names of permanent residents who had not previously been president would be grouped together. One of these would then be randomly selected to take over the duties of president for one year. This would be a random selection from five names. As owners who are nonresident are equally responsible for the community, should their names also be legally included in this selection? N K (Costa Blanca)

Are we easy targets? MIKE SENKER IN MY OPINION Views of a Grumpy Old Man LAST week the BBC announced they were scrapping free TV licences for over 75s except those receiving pension credits. The BBC was told that it could increase the licence fee if it covered free TV licences for over 75s, but now seem to have broken the terms of that deal. How do they get away with it? They made a deal, that’s it. Anyway they have got away with it, but they shouldn’t and the government shouldn’t let them. It was probably always going to happen with scumbag, lying politicians and a massive corporation involved. But it doesn’t have to happen. If I was in charge this is how I would solve it. Advertisements. In this day and age every single bit of media exists because of advertising. It’s not the dark ages for goodness sake. I’m not even talking about normal advertising like ITV or many other stations. One idea is that every programme is sponsored by one company. They already do product placement. It would stop the silly bits of duct tape on peo-
ple’s hats, sweatshirts etc. I mean, how daft is that anyway? Another way it could be funded is by taking the lead from many apps that you have on your ‘phone. Have BBC Premium, which keeps it advert free and you pay the licence fee that you pay now or even charge a bit more. Or have BBC Light, which is free, but has ad breaks like the other 500 TV channels I have now. But either way the 75+ group wouldn’t have to pay. It really annoys me how often this type of thing happens to OAPs. Is it just we’re easy targets and believed to be of no use to them? By now everybody knows my thoughts about Donald Trump and I know that his hard core followers think he can do no wrong, but even ignoring his lies, his racist, homophobic, misogynistic remarks and his all-round, just plain ignorance he has manged to sink to a new low. He is now re-tweeting Katie Hopkins in his ramblings and if you don’t know how bad that is, google Katie Hopkins. Here’s a small resume. She’s the one that was fired from LBC in the UK after a tweet that called for a ‘final solution’ to Islamic terrorism, which, some suggested, was a reference to the extermination of Jewish people by Hitler. I don’t think anything else has to be said about her but it just confirms my feelings about Trump.

These days it’s easy enough to use smart phones or tablets to search the nearest medical facility wherever you are, but if you need medical attention while you’re away, these tips will help when you need it most: • Top recommendation - buy Travel Insurance! Since the May 26 elections it is obvious that Rivera has obtained more municipal and regional benefit from Cs’ pacts with the socialists than being in thrall to Pablo Casado and Santiago Abascal.

Hoping for the worst PEDRO SANCHEZ will go to his investiture debate without knowing who will support him. Podemos supremo Pablo Iglesias could do the dirty on him if he doesn’t get the ministry he thinks he’s entitled to. Pablo Casada can’t support him and Albert Riveraç won’t, although the PNV nationalist will probably come through, leaving just odds and sods and the Catalan separatist. So if Sanchez gets his votes that’s exactly what his opponents want: backing from the wrong quarters and a stick to beat him with. In other words, Spanish politics at their most typical and their worst.

DEAR Editor, Every year, without fail the French go on strike, they have demonstrations and generally disrupt people’s plans, particularly during the all too brief tourist season. It is, it seems, more of a hobby for them rather than any number of legitimate industrial disputes. Air traffic controllers striking and fishing boats blockading the ports are two common protests and are two monotonously regular inconveniences. Then this year, we get the Gilets Jaunes, the series of protests against their government. Blockading Paris and the auto routes, disrupting travellers at whim. I read the newspapers and yet still do not understand what they are trying to achieve. Then, I had a thought - perhaps, just perhaps these strikers and blockaders are really employees of the Spanish Tourist Board, employed to get people to come to industrially, peaceful Spain. What a cunning plan. The French are really revolting. Viva la Revolution. Stan Reynolds

I was jealous to see the party, it did look like fun and I would have loved to be there, but, there was one thing missing, Where was Leapy Lee? JUSTICE has been done. The La Manada ‘Wolf Pack’ gang has been convicted of rape. Finally, the 18-year-old victim of a horrific gang rape at the Pamplona bull running festival of San Fermin can move on with her life, three years after the event. Her quest for justice should never have come to this. While the police are faultless - they acted immediately in tracking down the perpetrators of the horrendous crime - the rest of the justice system is not. When the five men who took advantage of the young woman were cleared of rape and convicted instead on the lesser charge of sexual assault, there was understandable outrage in the country. No one could understand how the men - who not only assaulted the victim at least 10 times in the most depraved ways but also posted a video of the assault to a WhatsApp group called La Manada - were not guilty of rape. It came down to the interpretation of the law made by a lower court. It decided that according to the letter of the law for an assault to be considered rape then it has to be accompanied by either violence or the threat of violence - for example showing a knife. Ridiculously, the court seemed to imply that because a lone woman did not fight back against five grown men, then it was not rape. Fortunately, the Supreme Court decided otherwise. Let us hope this sets a precedent that other judges follow in future.

Rebel violinist STRAD, the rebel violinist is a five-piece band which plays a blend of classics, rock, flamenco, jazz, and electronic music using powerful stage lighting and exceptional sound balance. New mortgage law SPAIN’S new mortgage law has finally come into force. It is designed to incorporate European directives on consumer protection into Spanish law and includes several aspects beneficial to the customer. It is most beneficial to people taking on new loans, but what about those who already have a mortgage? According to bank comparison website HelpMyCash.com there are some measures that will affect existing mortgage holders, although most of the new regulations are not retrospective. Chief amongst these is the one that reduces the cost of converting a variable mortgage to a fixed rate loan, and secondly a tightening of regulations for foreclosures. When it comes to swapping loans from variable to fixed rates, banks may now charge a maximum of 0.15 per cent of the outstanding capital within three years of the initial contract being signed. After this period the transaction should be free. Before the law came into force, the usual commission for novation (where the

For example, a borrower who wants to move to a fixed rate on a mortgage contracted two years ago with a pending capital of €50,000 would have been charged up to €250 under the old regime.
Now the cost should be a maximum of €75. But remember - there may be notary and land registry fees to pay as well. The second article that applies retroactively is the one which regulates the application of the early maturity clause. This is the step taken by banks to enable them to foreclose on the mortgage and seize the home after missed payments. The new regulations establish tougher requirements to apply this clause. During the first half of the mortgage term, the money owed must exceed 3 per cent of the capital granted or reach an equivalent of 12 instalments. In the second half of the loan term, the missed payments must be worth at least 7 per cent of the principal of the loan or an equivalent of 15 monthly payments. In addition, the lender must give the debtor one month to catch up with any pending payments before being able to start the execution process. It has also been made easier for existing mortgage holders to swap banks should they so wish.

by Nick Fletcher TOYOTA’S RAV4 was a pioneer of the Sports Utility Vehicle when it made its debut in 1994. Today, it is an established global best-seller and the latest version - much larger than the original - still provides the versatility and practicality that made it famous. The latest RAV4 is a full hybrid - it can run on electric power alone. It has a 2.5-litre petrol engine mated to an electric motor and with electric CVT auto transmission. This combination gives a nippy 0-100 kph time of 8.4 seconds, top speed of 180 kph (112 mph) and low emissions, just 105 g/km. ALEJANDRO VALVERDE has made a triumphant return to competition two months after suffering a fall, which forced his withdrawal from the classic Liège-Bastogne-Liège. For the second consecutive year he has won the Route of Occitania (France). It is some recompense for the Spaniard, who lost out on the Giro d’Italia as a result of that fall. On Sunday he started the fourth and final stage of the cycling road race with a narrow eight-second advantage over Colombian Iván Ramiro Sosa but the Movistar team had no problem defending Valverde’s first place. The last stage victory was taken by Frenchman Arnaud Demare (Groupama FDJ), who won the sprint, ahead of Sacha Modolo. The Spaniards David González and José Rojas were

FRENCHMAN Clement Berardo was disqualified on the first day of the Andalucia-Costa del Sol Match Play 9 after he ran out of golf balls. He was on hole 16 when the embarrassing incident happened at the Valle Romano course. Tournament director Federico Paez explained: “It was very windy, the fairways are narrow and the rough is very thick vegetation.” Berardo had a bad day with a quadruple bogey nine on the first hole, a double bogey, two more bogeys and two dropped balls on holes 14 and 15.

The woman from Murcia took her first victory in 2019 and won at Italy’s Misano circuit to throw the gauntlet down to champion leader and fellow Spaniard Manuel Gonzalez. The turning point came in the double header in Jerez when the 22-year-old seemed revitalised as she took two podiums. This catapulted her up the championship standings from 11th to sixth.
