Moors and Christians beamed live to US By Cathy Elelman MOJACAR’S Moors and Christians celebrations can boast genuine international fame. For the first time, US television network ABC broadcast live images of Sunday evening’s spectacular grand procession on its Good Morning America programme. The connection to the network, a flagship property of Walt Disney Television, came from the highly prestigious New York-based Associated Press news agency. American viewers were treated to the sight of locals dressed in their full, glorious festival finery as they made their way down from the village square to the public fountain, marching and dancing in step with the strident rhythms belted out by the bands. “To see us on an American

“The impact of this kind of promotion all adds up to the municipality advancing in terms of tourism and continually expanding its markets,” the councillor told the Euro Weekly News.
Sunday’s procession brought the curtain down on 48 hours of uninterrupted loud partying and events, classified as of Andalucia Tourist Interest. This year celebrations were a resounding success all-round, the councillor reported. “The comments from traders are they don’t remember such a good Moors and Christians weekend for years,” the councillor told EWN. The special events in Mojacar continue this weekend. Along with Nijar and Lucainena, Mojacar is marking the summer solstice with the ‘La Noche mas Romantica’ (the most romantic night). The village will be decked out with thousands of balloons and hearts from 8pm and there will be live music in the squares. Love will be very much in the air at the stroke of midnight with the grand kiss initiative.

NEWS EXTRA Pension scam THE Almeria Public Prosecutor has called for an eight-year prison sentence for a provincial capital resident for illegally claiming their dead mother’s widow’s pension for 17 years, adding up to payments of more than €61,000.

Migrant smuggling arrest THE skipper of a boat intercepted off the Almeria coast with nine illegal immigrants on board is under arrest. Police charged the 26-year-old Algerian with a crime against the rights of foreign citizens. The Maritime Rescue Service went to the assistance of the 6x2-metre inflatable dinghy 2.7 nautical miles off the coast of San Jose on June 4. At the same time as processing the immigrants, police launched investigations to try and identify the individuals behind the people smuggling criminal network. The investigations, supported by the European Border and Coast Guard Agency (FRONTEX), along with interviews of the nine migrants, revealed that about a month earlier a criminal organisation had begun contacting different people in Algeria, offering to take them over to Spain in return for the equivalent of some €2,600. Once they had made the payment they were told to be on the Aint Turk beach in Algeria at 6pm on June 3 to make the crossing to the Spanish coast. They were also told not bring any luggage or food as the crossing would only take four hours. Police said the 26-year-old skipper warned the eight others that if the boat

Graffiti daubed on Gabriel monument GRAFFITI calling for the ‘mistreatment of males, whether boy or man,’ appeared last week on the Almeria City monument dedicated to Gabriel Cruz, the little boy found dead in the Cabo de Gata Natural park. The message was daubed on the head of the feature shaped like a whale, which stands next to the sea. Gabriel, known to his friends and family as Little Fish, went missing from Las Hortichuelas near Nijar at the end of February 2018 sparking a huge search involving thousands of people. Two weeks later police charged the 43-year-old girlfriend of Gabriel’s father with killing the eight-yearold when they found his lifeless body in the boot of her car. Ana Julia Quezada’s trial is scheduled to get underway in September. Gabriel’s parents opened the ‘The Whale of Gabriel and of Good People’ monument last December. His mother told the hundreds of people who turned out for the inauguration, the area “was a way of trying to give back to all of you the love you all give to us, and especially to children.”

Fiery fiesta THIS picture of Spanish men jumping over a bonfire comes as thousands prepare to do the same in one of the country’s biggest fiestas this Sunday. Jumping over bonfires at midnight is one of the many traditions of the Noche de San Juan fiesta (Saint John’s Eve). The festival closely coincides with midsummer celebrations held elsewhere in Europe and the world and also comes days after the Summer Solstice. San Juan evolved out of celebrations which traditionally took place the night before Saint John’s feast day.
John the Baptist, the cousin of Jesus Christ who baptised him at the beginning of his ministry as a rabbi, was born on June 24 according to Christian teachings. The way San Juan is celebrated throughout Spain varies from place to place. A common feature in Spain and across the world is the lighting of bonfires. The Spanish tend to light their fires on beaches, though they are also lit in some places inland including in Madrid.
Drug trafficker caught A BELGIAN wanted for heading a Charleroi-based cocaine and heroin trafficking criminal network is under arrest. Guardia Civil detained the 36-year old in his home in Balerma in El Ejido. The Guardia launched the operation at the end of March after the Belgian authorities issued a European Arrest Warrant requesting a search for the man identified as MS, believed to be living in Spain with his girlfriend. The Guardia reported they had kept the fugitive’s residence under surveillance for several months, establishing that he avoided leaving the property. Once his identification was confirmed, officers accompanied by two Charleroi Local Police raided the house and arrested him. The Belgian faces charges of belonging to a criminal organisation and drug dealing, as well as money laundering. The Guardia also reported the 36-year-old had been in possession of firearms.

The bonfires are one of three traditional elements of the fiesta, with their symbolism and significance traceable to pre-Christian pagan religions. Midnight sees fiesta goers run into the sea, which has its origin in water being seen as purifying and as working best with medicinal plants, another traditional element. Those celebrating then jump over the fires either for good luck or to make a wish, depending on the area. Fires were believed to ward off evil spirits in pagan cultures.
Cannabis cultivation arrest A 41-YEAR-OLD man is under arrest for growing hundreds of cannabis plants in properties in the 500 viviendas neighbourhood of Almeria City. Police found 270 plants in pots, along with 58 600w lamps and eight air extractors. Repeated power cuts and several fires originating in electrical connections in recent months, combined with reports of a strong smell of marihuana in the air, alerted the authorities to the possible existence of an illegal cannabis plantation. Surveillance of the area led to the discovery of a property on which the front had been modified to put up air conditioning units hidden by blinds. Police reported there was clearly a sophisticated air filtration and extra cooling system, along with video surveillance and an alarm activated 24 hours a day.

‘AN adrenalin high’ was how Ian Hunter described his feelings when he made it to Mojacar last Thursday following a 1,500-mile cycle to honour the memory of his late mum Joyce and to raise money for Cancer Research UK. Not only did 65-year-old Ian successfully complete the formidable challenge of pedalling from Morecambe to Almeria in just three weeks, he smashed his target of raising £5,000 for the cancer charity: the final total is set to be over £6,000. Kicking back after his incredible endeavour, Ian told the Euro Weekly News, “This is what I’d been talking through in my mind when I was training and cycling here, and here was the reality.” One thing Ian hadn’t prepared for was the surprise his wife Pam had in store for him. He was, he said, “stunned and overwhelmed” to find her waiting for him when he reached the final stop and not back in Lancashire as she’d had him believe. Incredibly Ian only took up cycling in 2017 after a health scare. He quickly caught the cycling bug. Then when cancer claimed Joyce’s life last year he came up with the idea of the fundraising ride to Mojacar, where he and

Pam have had a holiday home for 14 years, and where Joyce visited them many times. With daughter Carol supporting him on the UK leg and friend Chris Hills accompanying him in a support car, Ian averaged about 75 to 80 miles a day. Ian had trained with a cycling coach to prepare physically for the challenge, but admitted he’d had a few doubts beforehand. “The most I’d cycled before back-to-back was five 50-mile
rides and one 80-mile ride, so I didn’t know how I was going to cope,” he said. As it turned out the training paid off. “I was really pleased with the way my body stood up to it, but it got mentally tough at times and it was fighting that,” he revealed. Ian’s lowest point was going over the Pyrenees. Having built himself up for what would inevitably be a tough day, dismal, wet weather made the ride up the
mountain road even harder. By the final 10-mile climb he had a strong wind against him too. He kept going all the way to the top, only for a mighty gust of wind to flip him over. Fortunately he only suffered a few bruises. Boredom was an issue on straight runs through unremarkable landscapes, but there were other days going through small villages and spectacular scenery which Ian described as an “absolute joy.”

Arriving in Poole on the south coast was another high point Ian said. “It was the psychological barrier of getting the first leg done.” What really kept him going over the three weeks Ian said was thinking about why he was doing such as an epic bike ride. “I just had to switch onto the Cancer Research UK wristband the Lancashire fundraising manager Vikki Bassek gave me when I set off and focus on that.”
‘Sea of plastic’ seen from space ALMERIA’S greenhouses are collectively one of the few man-made structures clearly visible from space, according to Spanish astronaut and acting Science and Innovation Minister Pedro Duque, because the plastic reflects the light, producing a ‘spectacular’ effect. Now NASA has released two images of the province’s ‘sea of plastic’ among 140,000 royaltiesfree photographs, audios and videos published on its website. The space agency revealed one image is of the coastal plain some 30 kilometres south-west of Almeria City, captured in 2004 by an Expedition 8 crew member on the International Space Station. Greenhouses surrounding El Ejido are the subject of a second image from NASA Terra spacecraft in 2011.

Re-elected local council leaders include the Socialist PSOE party’s Maria Lopez in Garrucha, after taking seven out of 13 seats, and Cristobal Garcia in Arboleas, having won nine out of 11. the mayor of Roquetas thanks to the 11 votes of his PP party and the three of the far-right Vox. Elsewhere there were complete changes in town halls. In Huercal-Overa Francisca Fernandez of PSOE was sworn in as the municipality’s first female mayor with the last minute support of Ciudadanos. The PP moves into the opposition. The Socialist Jose Luis Amerigo takes over in Carboneras following eight years of local government run by the PP and the independent GICAR. In Vera PP takes control of the town hall after gaining an absolute majority in the polls. Jose Carmelo Jorge becomes the new mayor. Ciudadanos mayors take over in five municipalities this time: Los Gallardos, Albanchez, Velez Blanco, Lucar and Tijola. Seron was the first local authority in the province to be officially constituted on Saturday. The Socialist Juan Antonio Lorenzo started his sixth term as mayor.

DELIGHTED: Vera-born Elche CF captain Juan Francisco ‘Nino’ Martínez Modesto said he was “very grateful” to be recognised for his 20-year professional career.
Football hero honoured VERA has honoured local born footballer Juan Francisco ‘Nino’ Martínez Modesto, naming the municipal sports centre after the first and second division player. “With this small gesture we wanted to recognise his brilliant sporting career as a professional footballer,” commented outgoing Vera mayor Felix Lopez at the unveiling of a plaque bearing the 39-year-old sportsman’s name. “We want to thank him for his role as an ambassador for the municipality wherever he has gone,” Lopez continued. The player said he was “delighted and very grateful.” He recalled he left Vera aged just 14 to achieve his dream of playing football at professional level, saying, “and that your town recognises you after 20 years of playing and competing at the highest level is a luxury.” Current captain of Elche CF, Nino has in the past played for Tenerife, Levante and Osasuna.

Burglary suspect arrested A SERIES of burglaries from homes in Vera Playa led to the arrest of a 30-year-old suspect. Guardia Civil believe HEM was responsible for breaking into at least five properties, mainly in the naturist area. According to the Guardia the thief checked out the area in advance to see what security measures properties had in place and to pick which ones to hit. He would then force his way through iron grills, windows and doors, using such force he could be placed at the scene of a number of break-ins due to the blood traces he left behind.

Charity match for life-changing treatment VERA and District Lions is hosting a charity football match to help Mojacar resident Manuel Rosa Galan raise the €20,000 he needs for life-changing treatment in Pamplona for Parkinson’s disease. It will be Mojacar Pueblo versus Mojacar Playa, all the money raised going to help the 57-year-old street sweeper known as ‘Manolo el barrendero.’ What’s more, the Lions will match every cent raised on
the day up to €2,000. The fundraising match will kick off at 7pm on Sunday June 30 at the Mojacar football stadium. As well as the on-field action there will be a bar and a raffle. THE PAWS-PATAS cattery has been forced to close until further notice after a bunch of sick kittens were left outside the animal charity’s shelter gates. PAWS-PATAS reported that the kittens of various ages were dumped at the shelter before the morning shift arrived. The volunteers took them to the quarantine pens for assessment. They appeared to be in reasonable health; just a couple had watery eyes. The next morning, the volunteer on duty arrived to find one kitten dead and another fighting for its life. By the end of the day

The nearly €500,000 project includes the construction of a new roundabout, a cycle track, wider and more accessible pavements and the installation of new urban furniture. THE Mojacar Walking Group has outdone itself this year in its fundraising efforts for worthy local causes. Members raised €2,600 over the last walking season, which the group has donated to the Vera-based Asprodalba association for people with an intellectual disability. This was the highest amount the walkers have collected for charity in one season, topping last year’s total, also given to Asprodalba, by €400. On every walk members give a €1 donation for charity. The group raised a further €100 this year from sales of its very own calendar featuring fantastic photos of some of the stunning locations they cover on their walks, €50 from sales of caps and t-shirts, and further cash from random donations. Over the last 10-12 years the group has donated more than €30,000, mainly to Asprodalba, but in recent years to the MACS cancer support group and the Sunseed Project for sustainable living as well. “We have chosen Asprodalba as our main charity because of the tireless, dedicated work of the director Ignacio Martin,” the group’s Barrie Naylor told

early autumn. The group’s origins go back to 1986, when Sid and Ann Carter started the organised walks in the hills and countryside surrounding Mojacar,
Turre, Bedar, Villaricos and Antas, leading a small group of friends. Today the group has 2,000 registered walkers from all over Europe and 100 different walks.
Fayre fundraiser thanks THE Costa Almeria and Costa Calida Anglican Church has issued a big thank you to all the businesses and individuals who donated raffle prizes for its summer fayre and to everyone who went along and supported the event on the day. The fayre held in Mojacar Playa on June 8 raised €3,524 for the church.

Second-hand shop hides illegal secret A GUARDIA CIVIL inspection of a second-hand shop in Roquetas de Mar revealed an unexpected secret: a hidden marihuana plantation. Officers were visiting the store as part of a house break-in prevention plan when they noticed a newly built brick wall. Unsatisfied with the increasingly edgy shop owner’s responses to their enquiries, they decided to take a thorough look round and discovered a metre-wide hole in the wall behind a fridge. They could see there was an adjoining unit behind the wall from where they caught strong wafts of marihuana. Officers found more than 100 marihuana plants in the concealed unit along with electrical equipment used for increasing the illegal plantation’s productivity. Guardia arrested the 35-yearhold shop owner AM on charges of a crime against public health and defrauding the power supply.

A call for tougher laws By Dilip Kuner ANIMAL rights groups are demanding a strengthening of laws after the case of a man accused of sexually assaulting his dog came to light. National Police are investigating a man in Santiago de Compostela for animal cruelty in relation to the alleged sexual touching of a bitch.

In cases where the animal lives and no weapons were used against it, the maximum penalty is one year in ja il a nd a dis qual i f i cat i on f r om working with or keeping animals of
up to 36 months. However, in Spain sentences under two years are automatically suspended if the defendant has no previous criminal record. In this case the dog involved - a female Boxer - was taken to the vet several times for treatment for infections in the genital area and in other organs.

A MAN allegedly under the influence of drugs drove 20 kilometres on the wrong side of the road with two young children in the back of his car. National Police of Langreo (Asturias) have arrested the man, a resident of El Entrego. They describe how several vehicles had to swerve out of his way and pedestrians were forced to jump clear when he drove onto the verge. Police tried to stop him by
putting on their lights and siren, but he carried on for 20 kilometres towards Tudela Veguin. Eventually he was stopped after a collision with the police car. A woman companion jumped out of the car while he tried to drive off. Police managed to stop him, but he violently resisted arrest. It was only after he was subdued police realised there were two children aged about three in the back seat.
SPAIN has ranked 14th for its family support policies in a table of 31 European countries. The ranking, from the UN’s UNICEF children’s agency, showed Spain came ahead of Britain and Ireland in terms of policies to help parents with their children. Sweden, Norway, Iceland, Estonia and Portugal topped the table which was published as part of the Are Rich Countries More Family-Friendly? report. UNICEF Executive Director Henrietta Fore said: “We need governments to help provide parents with the support they need to create an enabling environment for their children.”

Spanish air quality improving THE quality of Spanish air improved in 2018, with new analysis showing the amount of pollutants have fallen, but remain above official limits. The Climate Change Ministry’s Air Quality report found the fall was less significant for nitrogen dioxide (NO2), particulates (PM10) and ozone (O3). Environmental policies including Madrid’s low
emission zone and the electrification of public transport are beginning to have a positive impact, government officials said. The amount of pollutants exceeded limits 34 times in 2018 compared to 36 times the year before. The regions of Madrid, Andalucia, CastillaLa Mancha, Valencia and Murcia saw pollution rise above limits the most, according to the report.
More now in work UNEMPLOYMENT in Spain fell by 0.2 per cent in Spain in April, part of an ongoing drop which has lasted since August 2013 according to latest information released by the OECD. The Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) is an intergovernmental economic organisation with 36 member countries, founded in 1961 to stimulate economic progress and world trade. Overall unemployment dropped to 5.2 per cent across all of the member states, so Spain still with 13.8 per cent out of work whilst recovering, still has a long way to go, especially as the figures highlight that 32.7 per cent of young people (aged from 15 to 24) are without jobs which is the second highest total in the eurozone, beaten only by Greece. Another interesting fact is that 4 per cent more women than men remain without jobs in Spain, which is much higher than the average difference within the eurozone.

Student stabs biology teacher A THIRD-YEAR student in Valencia stabbed his biology teacher as 2017-2018 data shows 13 per cent increase in assaults on teachers in Spain. The assailant, at the Institute of Secondary Education (ESO) la Misericordia, became enraged as the teacher gave out grades for the second trimester, took a knife from his backpack and attacked his teacher’s shoulder and arm. Classmates pushed tables and threw chairs to stop the minor who had never previously demonstrated aggressive behaviors. Afterwards, the attacker hid on the roof of the school, and the teacher was transferred to the General Hospital of Valencia. The police reported that the minor did not resist arrest. According to sources from the hospital the teacher, 40, has

Fewer unsold new properties DESPITE the fact that there seems to be an ever increasing amount of new building, the Ministry of Development has revealed that there were nearly half a million empty new properties across Spain in 2018. For nine years running more new houses have been sold than were built, but it means that the building industry is still suffering from the problems which arose during the financial crisis which has re-
sulted in just under 460,000 new properties still remaining unsold and this figure does not take into account older properties which are on the market as well. The good news for builders is that this apparent blight of unsold properties is steadily declining and is some 30 per cent lower than it was at the height of the crisis which means that new builds are still attracting investors with an eye for the future.
Brawl erupts on UK flight AN easyJet flight from Spain’s Gran Canaria to London Gatwick had to turn round after a brawl erupted on board. Spanish Air Traffic Control tweeted: ‘Flight from Gran Canaria to London returned to the airport because of a disruptive passenger on board who apparently assaulted an-

Man arrested for raping tourist in Sri Lanka A SRI LANKAN man has been arrested for allegedly raping a Spanish tourist back in May 2019. The incident reportedly took place in the Sri Lankan town of Kandy as the woman was sleeping in her hotel room. According to reports the woman had met the alleged attacker hours before as they were staying in the same hotel.
The detained claimed to be family of the owner of the establishment. As the woman slept the man took advantage of the poor condition of the door lock and forced his way in before allegedly attacking her. The victim left the hotel and reported the crime to the Spanish consulate in Sri Lanka along with the Tourist Police. She was then hospitalised for

THE WEEK IN POLITICS THE path to power for Spain’s acting prime minister is becoming clearer, but work still continues to build a workable majority following April’s snap general election. Pedro Sanchez looks set to face an investiture vote, a ballot of Congress of Deputies members on his taking office as prime minister, in early July. Sanchez and his left-leaning Partido Socialista (PSOE) will formally take power if the investiture vote goes smoothly. The path to power was initially hard due to arithmetic in the Congress of Deputies. PSOE won 123 seats following April’s election, well ahead of the second largest party, the conservative Partido Popular (PP), but more than 50 seats short of a majority. In the first vote, Sanchez would have to win an absolute majority in the 350-seat Congress to take office. The fractured make up of Congress makes this a tall order. He is well on the way to securing the backing of the leftist Podemos, but will
still need to win over smaller, regionalist parties to get over the line. If he fails to win an absolute majority then a second vote is held where only a simple majority, more yeses than nos, is needed. If Sanchez reaches this stage then things as they stand appear to be easier. Some parties, including the pro-Catalan independence Esquerra Republicana de
Cataluyna (ERC), have already said they will abstain meaning Sanchez will not need as much support. A loss in the second vote would trigger another general election as Spain would be left without an effective government. Acting Deputy Prime Minister Carmen Calvo said another election is not going to happen because voters had already given PSOE a mandate. She called on other parties to back Sanchez’s bid to become prime minister. Pablo Casado and Albert Rivera, leaders of the PP and centrist Ciudadanos respectively, have both said they will vote against Sanchez. But recent polls of their parties’ members show a majority would rather they abstain, perhaps showing voters want a stable government more than continued deadlock.
Mayors sworn in MAYORS across Spain officially took up their posts on Saturday following last month’s local elections. Control of Madrid City Council, previously governed by a leftist coalition led by Manuela Carmena, has now passed to rightwing parties. The conservative Partido Popular’s (PP) Jose Luis MartinezAlmeida is the new mayor of Spain’s capital. He heads a rightwing coalition which includes the centrist Ciudadanos and far-right Vox. Barcelona mayor Ada Colau, of the leftist Barcelona en Comu, narrowly clung on in city hall after the left-leaning Partido Socialista (PSOE) and Ciudadanos backed her. Joan Ribo also stays on as mayor of Valencia with the regionalist Compromis and with PSOE’s support. Juan Mari Aburto, of the Partido Nacionalista Vasco (PNV), is staying on for his second term in Bilbao with the backing of the Basque branch of PSOE. PSOE’s Juan Espadas has managed to stay on as mayor of Sevilla and will run the council with a minority administration. Adelante’s Jose Maria Gonzalez will stay on as Cadiz’s mayor and govern with an absolute majority.

Boy, 13, missing in Huelva area ZBIR EL KHOLTI aged 13 and living in Lepe (Huelva) near the Portuguese border has been missing since June 7. Zbir has wavy, short black hair, brown eyes, is 1.60m tall and weighs 50 kilos. The 13-year-old is reported to have gone missing wearing a grey tracksuit hoodie, black trousers and trainers. A break from the camps A TOTAL of 4,286 Saharawi refugee children are about to spend the summer in Spain. The 10 to 11-year-olds are swapping their places in refugee camps for homes in Spain under the Vacaciones en Paz (Vacations in Peace) 2019 programme. It has been organised by the State Coordination of As-
sociations in Solidarity with the Sahara (CEAS Sahara) and other associations in solidarity with the Saharawi people. The youngsters will spend two months spread around the country living with Spanish families to get away from the harsh conditions in the Tindouf refugee camps in Al-
geria. Temperatures there can reach 50 degrees in the shade at the height of summer. While here they will also get medical check-ups. In the last six years (20132018) 27,201 children have been welcomed into Spain from refugee camps in Tindouf.
Blaze bodies TWO people found dead in a house fire had both been stabbed. The bodies of Ana LucĂa, 50, and Salvador, 40, were discovered in a house in Cordoba by firefighters who arrived to put out the blaze. An initial medical report revealed the couple had knife wounds and now National Police have launched an investigation. While not ruling out any possibilities, they say it may be a case of domestic violence.

BREXIT BRIEF No-deal impact UP to 0.9 per cent could be knocked off Spanish Gross Domestic Product (GDP) in the event of a ‘disorderly’ no-deal Brexit, according to new estimates from economists. Spain’s General Council of Economists (CGE) said both Spain and Portugal would feel the impact of Brexit regardless of how it happens. The researchers, who presented their findings at the eighth annual Iberian Seminar of Economists, said the tourism industry would be one sector that would feel the most impact. British holidaymakers account for around 23 per cent of Spain’s total, according to Tourism Board figures. Others are likely to face financial instability and disruptions in their supply chains, the economists added. Imports and exports including those of cars, food and drink would be affected, with Britain currently Spain’s fifth-largest trading partner at around 7 per cent of total trade. The economists said Spain was also more exposed to potential trade fallout than other EU countries including France and Italy. Telecommunications, transport, business services and financial services including banking would also be hit, according to the forecasts. Spain faces having an estimated 0.5 per cent shaved off its GDP total even if a no-deal Brexit is orderly.

SPANISH police were involved in an international operation that led to more than 4.7 million counterfeit products being seized. Investigators across 18 countries had 16 400 social media accounts suspended and 3,300 websites selling fake goods were closed in the EU-wide operation called Aphrodite II. The online fake goods marketers were selling a large variety of counterfeit items including clothes and accessories, sports equipment, illegal IPTV set-top boxes, medicines, spare car parts, mobile phones, miscellaneous electronic devices, perfumes and cosmetics. The operation led to the arrest of more than 30 suspects and reported 110 others to respective judicial authorities. According to Europol: “Fake products sold on social media can be extremely dangerous. Lacking any quality control and not complying legal norms, fake toys, medicines, body care products, fake spare car parts, inks and material used to produce imitation luxury products and clothes can be harmful to consumer health.”

Migrant rescue COAST GUARDS have rescued more than 100 migrants from two boats in the Alboran Sea, according to an NGO. The Caminando Foundation said they were alerted to the 111 migrants by their families. The NGO then informed authorities and Spain’s Salvamento Maritimo dispatched rescue boats and helicopters to pick them up. The people aboard the boats were found in rough seas and were sailing in bad weather, a coast guard spokesperson said.
Migrant rights activist Helena Maleno Garzon said she was told three people had gone missing from one boat which carried 53 people. Those aboard the boat were taken to the port of Motril in Granada Province, Andalucia. The 58 migrants in the other boat returned to Morocco by its own means, according to the Caminando Foundation. It comes as at least 8,523 people have arrived in Spain after crossing the Western Mediterranean migration route so far this year, International Organisation for Migration (IOM) figures show.

Unemployment among young people aged 15 to 24 reached a rate of 32.7 per cent in Spain, above the OECD average (11.1 per cent), and for those aged over 25 it was 12.4 per cent, also higher than that of the OECD (4.5 per cent).

via public television. Trillo said: “The shelter will give him a decent life where he is not to be sentenced to death because of his disability.” Trillo and the team at Vacaloura devised a metal framed and harnessed wheelchair, the first of its kind in Spain to allow Lazaro to move comfortably. The Vacaloura Animal Sanctuary guarantee Lazaro will be taken care of until he dies a natural death.
A SAFE sex campaign was launched last week in response to sky-rocketing STI rates. Videos and ads have been posted on social networks aiming to reach 14to 29-year-olds. The campaign is a shock measure responding to the Wo r l d H e a l t h O rg a n i s a t i o n ’s ( W H O ) c o n c e r n a t the lack of progress curbing the increase of STIs. A report released by the ministry of health found in 2017 almost 24,000 cases
of gonorrhoea, syphilis and chlamydia were reported in Spain. According to the ministry, cases of gonorrhea have risen 26 per cent annually between 2013 and 2017 and in 2017 syphilis reached its highest peak number of cases since records began. Health Minister Maria Luisa Carcedo told reporters: “The use of condoms has dropped among 15 to 18-year-olds over the last few years.”
Toddler in pool tragedy A 19-MONTH-OLD toddler has died a week after falling into a swimming pool in Spain. The accident took place a fortnight ago in Salceda de Caselas (Pontevedra). The child’s family pulled the youngster out and alerted emergency services. Medics performed artificial resuscitation and the victim was taken to hospital by helicopter in a critical condition. However, the toddler never recovered.

Organ donation Living in Spain can bring with it an array of issues which may not have been encountered when living in the UK. There are lots of things to consider, and we are here to help try to make the transition and life in Spain a little easier by compiling a series of helpful facts and figures relating to a variety of topics. AS of 2010, Spain has operated an ‘opt-out’ (or presumed consent) system for deceased organ donation. This addresses the rate or refusal of potential donors or their families in giving permission for the use of organs. The rate of family refusal in Spain is 13 per cent, compared to 37 per cent in England (according to the National Transplant Organisation figures - ONT). According to the ONT, Brits living in Spain are more likely to donate their organs than their countrymen back home. It’s not necessary to have a donor card. What is important is to let family members and loved ones know your wishes in terms of organ donation. Figures published by the Spanish ONT in 2017 put the country as world leader in donation and transplants, reaching a new record with 46.9 donors per million people and 5.261 transplants. Spain has been a global leader in organ donation and transplantation for the past 26 years. Broken down by organ, there were 3,269 kidney surgeries (up 9 per cent on 2016), 1,247 liver transplants (up 8 per cent), 304 heart procedures (8 per cent rise), 363 lung surgeries (up 18 per cent), 70 pancreas transplants (down 4 per cent) and eight bowel surgical procedures (up 100 per cent). According to the National Transplant Organisation (ONT), these surgeries are equivalent to six donors and 14 surgical procedures a day. In addition, Spain saw a new record in bone marrow donation last year, with 78,291 new donors and an increase of 196 per cent over the previous year. At this rate, the country could reach its target of 400,000 bone marrow donors well before the mid-2020 goal. In Spain the number of those on the waiting list was reduced to 4,896 in 2017, from 5,480, although the number of children waiting for organs increased to 74, from 48 a year earlier. Lung and heart are viable for four to six hours after death, liver and pancreas 24 hours, kidney 72 hours, corneas 14 days, bone and skin five years, and heart valves up to 10 years. Small intestines, veins, tendons and ligaments can also be donated. A single organ donor can save up to eight people and a single tissue donor may enhance the lives of up to 50 people. THE European Commission (EC) has approved plans for Spain’s Santander and Mapfre to create a new bancassurance company for vehicles and small firms. The EC said the firms would be allowed to join together for the deal after finding it would not pose problems to the European Economic Area. The link between the two firms would have a limited impact on the Spanish market meaning competition problems were not likely, the EC added. It comes after the two companies agreed to launch the service in January.

Madrid leads in growth forecast THE Madrid Region is forecast to have the highest rate of economic growth in Gross Domestic Product (GDP) terms this year, according to a new study. The Foundation of Savings Banks’ (Funcas) report on regional growth forecast that the economy of the region would grow by 2.8 per cent this year. Cantabria is expected to have the second highest with 2.6 per cent, followed by Navarra with 2.5, Castilla-La Mancha with 2.4 and Galicia, 2.3. Andalucia is expected to grow by

The Spanish rate of GDP growth is predicted to be 2.2 per cent this year, according to government figures quoted in the report. The data comes as National Institute of Statistics (INE) figures from
last year also forecast high growth rates in Madrid and Cantabria. Funcas’ new study took those forecasts into account as well as data collected at the end of 2018 when growth data for Spain was revised down. The Foundation said Madrid, Navarra and the Basque Country’s growth could see sharper slowdowns than Spain has experienced overall. It comes as officials and economists continue to expect lower GDP growth for this year than earlier predictions due to global economic uncertainty caused by Brexit and USChina-EU trade war.
A TOTAL of 753,000 working days were lost due to worker absences in 2018, the highest number on record, costing Spanish companies an estimated €6.9 billion a new report showed. Adecco’s report found 2018’s absence rate stood at 5.3 per cent. The figure, which refers to the percentage of hours missed in a work day, tops the previous record set in 2009 of 5.2 per cent. The rise was driven by an increase in illnesses and out-ofwork accidents which numbered more than 5.2 million cases, the report found.

Decathlon sales fall SALES at the sports store chain Decathlon fell by 3 per cent to €1.5 billion in 2018, with net profits down 19 per cent year-onyear to €97 million. The company’s latest figures showed the falls came as Decathlon invested €35 million into its Spanish operation last year. Company CEO Javier Lopez said that investment and changes in stores were responsible for the decrease. It comes as the company plans to invest a further €41 million in Spain this year. Almost two-thirds of the funds are set to go towards its digitisation project which aims to speed up Decathlon’s delivery service.
Wage rise SPANISH government officials have reached an agreement with the CSIF public sector workers union to raise wages by 0.25 per cent next month on top of an increase linked to economic output (Gross Domestic Product, GDP).
Buying land SUPERMARKET chain Mercadona has bought six plots of land in the Parc Sagunt area of the Valencia Region for €16.6 million as part of plans to build a new logistics warehouse, adding 136,328 square metres to its current holdings there.
China woos Spanish companies A TOTAL of 50 Chinese investors and entrepreneurs travelled to Madrid last week to meet Spanish companies as Beijing continues to seek international backing for a global infrastructure project. The meeting involved more than 300 Spanish and Chinese companies. It comes as China tries to woo companies for its new Belt and Road initiative, a series of infrastructure programmes in
more than 152 countries. China is thought to be trying to win over Spanish companies because of the country’s economic ties to Latin America and North Africa. But some Spanish investors are wary. A KMPG report on the Chinese trip found weak institutions, an unfavourable business climate and the political structure of the East Asian country represented risk factors for Spanish companies.

LEAPY LEE SAYS IT OTHERS THINK IT I TRULY am becoming heartily peeved with people writing to remind me that I am ‘also an immigrant.’ Usually these informants are new readers and, although I am delighted to welcome them to my scribbles, it also means they have not read a number of my past columns in which I have more than covered this particular subject. So to all the wags who still think they are being clever, and occasionally quite nasty in their observations, I am completely aware that I am ‘also an immigrant.’ I am actually quite a proud immigrant. Many years ago, due to personal reasons (well chronicled in my books), I left the UK and, after some years in the Middle East, moved to Spain where I have resided for the last 35 years. This country has been good to me. It has educated four of my children, two of which have married Spanish locals, and my knowledge of the language is moderately passable. I originally brought some £50,000 into the country (which in 1983 was no small sum!) and, through unfortunate timing and various business ventures, managed to lose most of it over the next two or three years. During my time here, I have integrated to the best of my ability, helped support the local tourist industry and earned myself a Spanish pension. Although politically minded, I have never seriously

I feel that as an immigrant I have two choices. Stay and accept all that my host country has to offer, or leave! Through it all, I have however remained a true
British patriot. I am proud of my heritage. Proud also of the fact that both my father and grandfather, laid their lives on the line with millions of others to preserve Britain’s freedom and democracy. I am also disgusted by the way the country of my birth is slowly being brought to its knees by
ungrateful foreign spongers, greedy billionaires and dubious immigrants, who take advantage of its hospitality and, under the guise of diversity, would destroy its culture altogether. I am constantly enraged by deceitful, self-serving politicians, who either have some ulterior motive or are naïve almost beyond belief. I am a staunch Brexiteer. I am firmly convinced that only by ridding ourselves of the yolk of Brussels will our misguided children learn to stand on their own two feet, respect their country and regain the pride and patriotism that inspired the youngsters of yore to fight, and die for what they believed in. One thing I do try to avoid - although it is sometimes difficult - is hypocrisy. I do always endeavour to practise what I preach. I have nothing against immigration. In fact I believe it can often be a good thing. Providing the visitors retain the same attitude and respect toward their host country as I maintain myself. Unfortunately the majority of aliens that are pouring into Europe at this time appear to have a different agenda altogether. World Oceans Day - Saturday Ju Written by Suzanne ParmenterPhillips : Founder of Coastal Cleaners Andalucia THIS Saturday, June 22, sees the second local celebration of an internationally recognised event - World Oceans Day. A day of celebration, education and activity has been planned by Montemero an NGO from Mar de Pulpi and Coastal Cleaners Andalucia with support from the Tourism agency of Los Terreros and the town hall of Pulpi. The event will be held at the market ground next to the beach in San Juan de Los Terreros, a superb location, from 10am until 5pm with plenty to see and do for people of all ages throughout the day. Included in the itinerary are talks by Equinac who tend to stranded and injured sea life the length of the Almeria coastline, treating, rehabilitating and releasing whenever possible and Coastal Cleaners Andalucia, an active group who clean up local beaches and work on educational projects to raise awareness of the dangers of ocean plastics. There will be live art installations, a beach yoga session (4pm), demonstrations of plastic recycling machines based on designs by Precious Plastics, childrens’ craft activities, sand sculpture areas, face
painting, SUP paddle boards, kayaks,tombolas, music and stalls of an eco-friendly nature. For example Eco1, the new zero waste shop in Garrucha, which sells refills for cleaning products like floor cleaner and washing up liquid from bulk and lightweight cloth veggie bags for loose items which need to weighed. There will also be displays of commonly found ocean plastics, prototype river capture systems and ideas to generally reduce our environmental impact through actions taken in our own homes. Days like this, that raise awareness of the local situation are increasingly important in a world where it has been predicted that unless things drastically change, by 2050 there will be more plastic than fish (by weight) in the oceans. El Tiempo recently publicised shocking results from a WWF report named ‘A plastic trap,’ stating that Spain pours some 126 tons of plastics per day into the Mediterranean Sea, taking an unenviable second place in the list of worst polluting European countries behind Turkey. Will a third of the world’s PCs simply stop in January, asks Terence Kennedy MY wife’s venerable laptop is under bombardment right now, and the perpetrator is Microsoft. The reason: she’s clinging onto the ‘obsolete’ Windows 7. Read their dire warnings and you could easily believe her computing world will implode when Windows 7 ‘expires’ a few months from now. It will be no more, cease to be, ex-Windows. That’s radical talk, given that a third of the world’s users still swear by what many believe was Microsoft’s best-ever operating s y s t e m . S u r e l y t h e y c a n ’t j u s t flick the switch on January 14? T h e y c a n ’t , a n d t h e y w o n ’t . What they will do is simply freeze Windows 7 in time from that date. No more patches, updates, bug fixes, security solutions. If that doesn’t bother you, you can indeed keep using it forever, or at least until the computer itself dies. At which stage you will be unable to activate it again on
CLOSING WINDOWS: Ceasing to be? another machine even if you’ve got handfuls of kosher serial numbers, tough luck. Microsoft has had a hard sell trying to move users to the allsinging, all-dancing Windows 10, the final number in the progression as 10 now just keeps getting updated and improved forever more. They have managed to persuade 56 per cent of us to move t o Wi n d o w s 1 0 , a t t h e l a t e s t
count. But a stubborn 33 per cent swear by 7, and then there are the oddball diehards: 6 per cent on the dog’s dinner which was Windows 8, half a per cent still on the truly terrible Vista, and a luddite 1.6 per cent clinging on to the ancient XP for dear life. I n c l u d i n g B r i t a i n ’s g o o d o l d NHS, bless their cotton swabs. In many cases you can’t upgrade because your hardware simply won’t handle it.
If you remember Microsoft’s k i n d o ff e r o f a f r e e m i g r a t i o n from 7 to 10, that boat sailed a long time ago. Last time I looked it costs about a hundred smackers to make the move. Or for not much more you could buy a cheap computer with 10 pre-installed. The gloom and doom scenario for sticking with 7 is that if an unpatched vulnerability is found (at this late stage, really?), hackers will exploit it, and Microsoft won’t fix it. But your anti-virus program (you do have one, don’t you?) will keep updating to keep you safe, and many of your other apps like browsers, e-mail and office suite, can continue to be updated (‘patched’ in the jargon) in the usual way. So: like the famous Mark Twain quote, rumours of Windows 7’s death have been greatly exaggerated. Happy obsolescence.
IF you’re feeling besieged by Microsoft’s warnings, ask yourself how long you expect your computer to last. Most PCs pre-installed with Windows 7 will be between seven and 10 years old. That’s a pretty good run in an era when technology can have the life of a geriatric fruit-fly. Actually buying Windows 10 retail is pretty bad value, given that manufacturers of new computers pay Microsoft just a fraction of that price to pre-install it on their machines. There is another route. Join me in the shadows and I’ll tell you. You could take your chance buying an ‘OEM’ (factory-install) copy for €10 or up, openly on offer from plenty of absolutely legit sites like Amazon. I have, I did, and they worked. Mostly.

I AM angry. Again. So angry I need to lie down in a dark room and let my heart rate stabilise a bit. Meanwhile, why not flick ahead to the crossword page or go and make that cup of coffee… Hey, me again. Apologies for the short break but pleased to report the heart rate’s just about stabilised. But why so angry? The reason is what I just read about the inquest into the London Bridge terror attack. How victims of the terrorists were left disastrously in the lurch by paramedics. Health and Safety legislation has undeniably saved many lives and prevented many serious injuries. But the underlying problem is the threat of lawsuits, the consequent blame culture and closing of ranks when an emergency service worker makes a genuine mistake whilst carrying out his job. Those criticised for their ‘H&S caution’ will be hamstrung by the innumerable protocols imposed by managers when they started work. In turn, these managers will have been fully apprised of their responsibility towards the organisation to cover its back and avoid running up huge costs from frivolous lawsuits or increased insurance premiums.

Can they call AGM by e-mail? Spain’s Horizontal Law specifies the procedure for calling the AGM in Article 16 and distribution is defined in Article 9. There is no mention of e-mail communication. DEAR Editor, For those of you that do not know, the leader of the Liberal Democrats is a man called Sir Vince Cable. This man has been the leader of this political party for over two years and during that time I do not think I have heard him speak once. I have not seen him in the newspapers, heard him on radio or television, nothing, nada, zip, zero. And yet, as he has resigned and finishes his term, his party is having its best run, ever. And they have achieved this without saying much at all. So maybe this should be a lesson for any aspiring politician and indeed our current lot of motor mouths should perhaps heed this ethos. Being well served WHEN we first came to the Costa Blanca to explore where we wanted to live, we stayed in Denia. Now, although it was February, it was warm enough to eat outside and we duly ordered off the menu, not realising that there was a ‘menu del dia’ for €10. We got talking to some lovely Spanish people on the next table and I was amazed at both the quality of food that they were served and the price; €10 for all that, why that was roughly the price of a chippy supper! They had a starter of a lovely fresh salad and then a magnificent cauldron of what I now know to be Arroz al Horno. I will remember the smell of that dish for a very long time and then they had dessert, as well. What a great concept ‘menu del dia’ is. I love them. Dave Starkey
Life’s a beach I HAVE to take my hat off to the council and beach workers in Fuengirola, Malaga. This morning I was walking my dog along the promenade at 7am and it was a hive of industrial activity. There were vehicles moving and flattening the sand, council workers picking up and clearing litter and laying walkways, bins were being emptied, beach hut staff were sorting beds and cleaning pathways. It just seemed kind of ironic that so much physical preparation was being made so that members of the public could sit back and relax. Millie Herbert

The least said….. Right on track MY wife and I recently travelled from Xeraco, just north of Gandia for a couple of nights in Valencia. We parked for nothing in the station car park, the station ticket lady was charming, the tickets were only just over €8 for the two of us, for a journey of just over an hour. The train was on time, it was clean, even the loos were useable and there were security guards on board for part of the journey. We arrived in Valencia relaxed, but then compared this journey to British trains (BR sandwiches, not getting a seat, toilets that were disgusting etc). Indeed, a couple of

FINES of thousands of euros handed down to three feminist protesters under Spain’s so-called ‘gag law’ once again throw a spotlight on restrictions on demonstrations. The women face paying up to €2,000 for breaking the Law for the Protection of Citizen Security, the gag law’s official name, following International Women’s Day marches on March 8. The then conservative Partido Popular (PP) government argued it would help keep protesters safer during demonstrations by curbing violence when the law was passed in 2015. But opposition parties, including the now-ruling Partido Socialista (PSOE), activists and NGOs claimed it granted sweeping powers to police to target protests. The law stops activists preventing evictions, taking ‘unauthorised’ pictures of police officers and restricts protests outside the Congress of Deputies and Senate buildings. The human rights NGO Amnesty International said in a report last year that the state had made at least €25 million from fines since the law was introduced. Fines range from €100 to €600,000 for the most serious offences. Amnesty International claimed the law has been used to target journalists and legitimate protests. PSOE pledged to reform the law after taking power last year but it remains largely untouched. PSOE previously claimed the law represented a return to a ‘police state.’ Pressure should be piled on them now they look set to stay in government to repeal it.

LOVE YOURSELF: Be your own inspirer. do this naturally. This is a very good first tip. Another thing you can do to love yourself more is to take a little booklet that you can use every evening before you go to bed. Start writing down in bullet points what has
happened to you that day in a positive way. Those things you were happy about, things or people that made you smile. And by doing so, be thankful for it all. The next morning you read quickly what you wrote the evening before and then you start your day. When you do this daily you will place your brain in a thankful positive mode and start loving yourself more and more. A very good method of how to love yourself more is living in the now. Realising that the past, even yesterday, is over (and out). You cannot change what has happened. Maybe it has influenced you, but it really is the past. Same with tomorrow, the future. So what is left is this moment. The exact moment you are in right now. That is the only moment that exists in your life. If you practise on a daily basis, step by step, putting into your mind that only now exists, you
will have a more intense life. Also feel with all your senses every moment and be thankful for them. Look at them in a positive way whenever you can and you will also, with this method, start to give more love to yourself. With all this in mind, know that the real inspirer is within yourself. All the knowledge you need to move your life forward in the way you want it is already in you, in every person on this planet. You just have to feel it, to trust it. Once you can do this, a new world will open for you. You will start living the life you want. So let the inspirer do his thing now. Believe in yourself and go for it. One pot Chinese chicken and rice ONE POT MEAL: Wilt spinach on top of the rice.
A ONE POT meal has to be a favourite for any cook that also has to clean up afterwards! Cooking with meat, is very different to baking. Baking tends to be more scientific. If you get the ingredients wrong when making pastry or cakes, it is more often than not a disaster! When cooking meat and sauces however, you can play around with it a little more, and this is something
I do like to do. An extra bit of this or that, or adding different greens that we like, can change the whole look and taste of the dish. So, give it a try and make the meal your own! This dish is very simple to make, and the combination of ingredients result in a kind of fried rice and Chinese chicken dish, but all in one! Ingredients For the marinade 2 tablespoons (tbsp) Chinese cooking wine or white wine 3 tablespoons Oyster sauce 1 ½ tbsp dark soy sauce Ÿ tsp black pepper For the pan 1 tbsp olive oil 1 tsp grated fresh ginger 2 garlic cloves grated 1 large onion finely chopped 500g skinless, boneless chicken thighs, cut in half lengthways
OLIVE TREE FARM was set up about four years ago with the intention of achieving a level of self sufficiency. We have poultry for meat and eggs, goats for milk, rabbits and small pigs for meat and harvest our 70 olive trees each year for oil. We also grow a variety of fruits and vegetables.

long grain rice 375 ml chicken stock Method Mix all the marinade ingredients together and stir through your chicken pieces. Leave covered for an hour minimum to allow flavours to develop. Remove the chicken reserving the marinade liquid. Heat the oil in a deep frying pan over a med/high heat and brown off the chicken pieces. Remove to a plate and set aside. Add a little more oil to your pan, then add the ginger, onion and garlic and keep moving it around until slightly golden. Add the uncooked rice and stir through, add the chicken stock and reserved marinade. Lay the chicken pieces on top of the rice etc and pour any leftover juices into the pan. Bring to a simmer, reduce the heat a little, cover the pan with a lid and cook for about 12-15 mins until the liquid is absorbed and the rice is cooked. Scatter your spinach leaves over the top, press them down, put the lid back on the pan and leave for 10 minutes to wilt. When wilted, toss it all through to mix it together and serve immediately. You can scatter sesame leaves over the top if you like when serving. Optional You can add mixed frozen veg at the start which will cook along with the rice and chicken stock eg broccoli, cauliflower, carrots, peas. NB Use ordinary white long grain rice, jasmine and basmati work well. This recipe is NOT suitable for risotto or paella rice.

SO the unsayable and the unthinkable have been said and thought. Pedro Sanchez has hinted that he isn’t ruling out another election. The Partido Popular and Ciudadanos should shoulder the responsibility of abstaining and ensuring Spain’s governability, he said. In fact we all know that they aren’t going to do that because politicians here and elsewhere (naming no names but the UK instantly comes to mind) no longer centre their efforts on governability. Spain needs a government and it needs one that can last four years and the PP, Cs will do everything to ensure that it does not. And that won’t be because they believe this benefits the population and its welfare but because it furthers their own personal agendas and ambitions.

Agendas and ambitions The Podemos supremo should do everything possible to help Sanchez form a government but continues to hint that his 42 seats in the national parliament merit a ministry or two. The Podemos spokeswoman Irene Montero, also Iglesias’ partner, said very sternly not long ago, “Spain doesn’t need egotism, individualism and self-sufficiency.” Presumably she was referring to the PSOE, but she needs to tell that to Iglesias instead.
Making it easy DURING the election campaign, Isabel Diaz Ayuso came out with the usual family-sanctifying promises that we’ve all heard from the Partido Popular before.
Unborn children will be reserved school places, that sort of thing. But she made sense when she said her boss Pablo Casado and MPs from the PP should abstain when Pedro Sanchez makes his investiture bid. Esperanza Aguirre, former PP minister, PP president of the Madrid Community and PP national secretary general said much the same thing. Both pointed out that the PSOE to the disgust of Pedro Sanchez - enabled Mariano Rajoy to form a government in October 2016 by abstaining. Both women described facilitating a new socialist government as the lesser of two evils that would stop Sanchez from going over to the dark side ie the Catalan separatist parties.
Singer, not the song THE PP’s not-quite-so-bad showing in the regional and local elections has given Pablo Casado fresh wind. That was because people voted for the candidates - many of whom they were familiar with or knew - not the ideology. It certainly wasn’t because they suddenly decided they liked him more on May 26 than they did on April 28.
So what happened? These days no-one in the PP gets their knickers in a twist over anything that Aguirre says, but the party secretary general Teodoro Garcia Egea immediately responded that the party would not enable a PSOE government. “We will make it difficult,” Egea promised. Gone are the times when PP politicians nodded wise and smugly when Rajoy said that the most-voted party was morally entitled to govern. Obviously, they can’t back that particular horse any more. They know that if they did they’d automatically self-exile themselves from countless municipalities and several regional governments.

Musical key to cultural life THE Velez-Blanco Festival of Renaissance and Baroque Music returns next month, titled ‘A world to discover. Music and cultures for a New World.’ This year’s event features morning academic activities, conferences, and concerts every evening. Soprano Raquel Andueza will be among the performers. The festival is part of the University of Almeria’s summer courses programme. Deputy rector of University Extension and Sport, Maria del Mar Ruiz, said the aim was to “develop culture and the arts as part of a comprehensive humanist training for people, and complementary to academic study.” Festival director Candida Martinez explained the choice of theme marked the 500th anniversary of Magallan’s and El-

THE Supreme Court upheld the Almeria Provincial Court sentences for two brothers accused of killing their uncle and attempting to end the life of the victim’s son in Albox in 2016. The Supreme Court dismissed the brothers’ appeal, concluding the ‘factual account has reasonable support in the statements of the persons involved in the actions.’ The elder brother faces 29 years behind bars for shooting his uncle and the attempted murder of his cousin. His brother, considered his accomplice, will be locked up for 12 years and 11 months. The brothers were found guilty in a trial by jury in Almeria in May 2018.

Sworn in for second time FRANCISO TORRECILLAS was officially sworn in as Albox mayor on Saturday. The head of the Union de Ciudadanos Independientes (UCIN) party list takes up the post after winning an absolute majority in the May local elections. Torrecillas’ party polled 2,958 votes, giving it 10 council seats. This was some way ahead of the second placed Popular Party, which has five local authority seats after winning 1,610 votes. The Socialist PSOE gained
610 votes, translating into two seats on the council. This was Torrecillas’ second investiture. The first was
in August 2016 when he became mayor with the support of eight of the nine PSOE councillors.

Jaguar E-Pace ROAD TEST by Tim Saunders THERE are three ways to drive the Jaguar E-Pace. As a manual, an automatic or with paddle shifts. So much choice should ensure that the driver never gets bored. The E-Pace is the F-Pace’s smaller brother. And as with young siblings, I speak from experience, they have to be watched or they get out of hand. And so it is with the chunky 180 Diesel R-Dynamic S Automatic AWD that I am driving. The motorway is full of speed cameras and police patrol cars. Fortunately, the E-Pace is fitted with both a speed limiter and a cruise control. But as I soon discover the cruise control is not the best system because although the speed might be set at 70mph, go downhill and it’ll exceed it so concentration on that speedometer is paramount. The head-up display that digitally appears above the dashboard in front of the driver helps in this regards. The raised height of this SUV
is helpful too, because it gives a good view of the road ahead and certainly helps me spot a mobile speed camera van above the motorway some distance ahead. Is this pre-Brexit country in such a state that the enjoyment of driving must be removed along with everything else? While I’m at it, it always ceases to amaze me how when there’s say a 50mph speed limit, that so many motorists completely ignore it. Inside the cabin, my wife has changed the radio station from calming classical to something more funky, which doesn’t help the calm driving atmosphere that I try to foster. Three little urchins in the back all asking questions and the police at every turn is a sure way of driving me ever so slightly mad. But we make our way slowly but surely to a little village called Pease Pottage in West Sussex. At first I thought I wasn’t going to get on with the sat nav but son Henry (three) quickly shows me the way round it and I must say I agree with him, it is quite easy. In fact it’s a God send, allowing me to almost relax during

our travels. I find that I can rely upon
it, which is a rarity often only reserved for my wife’s map reading skills. The leather seats are fine but the quantity of plastic in the cabin is not what I would expect from a Jaguar. I know this is more of a budget vehicle, but incorporating some wood would in my opinion make for a more special vehicle - which is what a Jaguar always used to be. On touching the black grille, which does make an impact, I discover it is plastic. I don’t know how much a chrome grille would cost in comparison but in the overall scheme of

I get a similar result when I ask eldest daughter Harriett (eight) what 9 x 8 is… and from me come to think of it. Kick the accelerator down and it lurches uncomfortably forward. I cannot help but feel that this wide vehicle is better suited to wider foreign roads. Usually in vehicles fitted with electronic handbrakes there is a separate switch for the parking brake (and there is in the Jag). But the Jaguar incorporates the whole caboodle on its single gear stick, too. Despite this it can still be a time consuming exercise to make the simplest of manoeuvres when compared to a standard manual box. Also the cum-

Henry enjoys pretending to drive the E-Pace and opening the powered tailgate from the driver’s seat. All these buttons are a child’s delight. In absolute contrast to my Ford Fiesta where he can only turn on the radio and the lights. Harriett thinks the speed camera alert is clever. I don’t. So many noises going off at the same time just creates a befuddled motorist. A driver must concentrate and read the road. If they can’t do then they shouldn’t be on it. Technology is going too far. But it lives up to its name. The E-Pace is a quick vehicle and reasonably economical, too.

Spain are drawn in Group A against Great Britain, Ukraine and Latvia, with matches being played in Riga. The tournament runs from June 27 until July 7 and is being co-hosted by Latvia and Serbia.

AFTER a long hard season, Mallorca and Deportivo de La Coruña face their two biggest matches of the year with the prize of a spot in the top division for the winners. They are contesting the promotion play-off final after overcoming Albacete and Malaga respectively in the first round of play-offs. The first leg will be played tonight (Thursday, June 20) at Deportivo’s Riazor stadium at 9pm, with Mallorca hosting the second match on Sunday, also at 9pm. There will be no penalty shootout if the teams cannot be separated over the course of two matches. Away goals count double and there will be 30 minutes of extra time in the second leg if required. If it is still a tie, promotion will come down to who finished the regular season with the best league position - in this case Mallorca. The winners will join Granada, who were second, and champions Osasuna in La Liga next season, replacing relegated Rayo Vallecano, Huesca and Girona. Mallorca and Deportivo, who finished fifth and sixth respectively, hit form at the right time of the season. Third placed Malaga went down 2-5 on aggregate to Deportivo, while Mallorca overcame fourth placed Albacete 2-1 on aggregate after a 1-0 loss in the second leg.

THE yachts of the 52 Super Series have sailed to Cadiz this week for the second leg of the 2019 tour. The waters open to the Atlantic off Puerto Sherry, Cádiz are new to the series, but it is certain that all of the eight teams competing will have raised their game, each finetuning their setup for the different wind and sea conditions they expect at this second of five regattas in 2019. “Yes, absolutely, we can win,” Nacho Postigo, the Spanish navigator on Provezza commented on his arrival at the Marina Puerto Sherry, where the series is based this week. “Our boat feels really good, it is great all round now, and after Mahon (Menorca) we have confidence in just about every condition, it is well tested in the light flat water, in light winds and chop, medium winds flat water, moderate winds and chop, now it is good enough in all conditions. “The modifications to the boat, new keel and rudder changes and small developments to the rig, as well as the biggest change, to the crew line up, we feel that now it is down to us to sail clean

and sail nicely.” Both of the top two finishers, Platoon and Provezza in Mahon are Vrolijk designs. “I think Vrolijk have got it nailed this season. Our boat feels very powerful off the start line. And what is great is that we seem to have gained what we wanted, improving on our weakness without losing what were our strengths and that really is the Holy Grail,” the Provezza navigator says. A totally new venue to the world’s leading grand-prix monohull circuit, the racing arena off Puerto Sherry might offer a variety of conditions during this mid-June week. The racing waters are by the renowned Bay of Cádiz, to the north west of the Straits of Gibraltar at the entrance to the Mediterranean. Platoon and Provezza top the season standings on 28 and 29 points respectively, with 2018’s defending champions Quantum Racing in third, six points off the leaders. The title holders are on the up as they constantly refine and improve their communication after making big changes to the crew line up for this season.

MARC MARQUEZ has extended his lead in the MotoGP rankings after teammate Jorge Lorenzo crashed, taking out a slew of top riders on lap two in Barcelona. Lorenzo had made a blistering start, moving up from 10th on the grid to fourth. But he came in too hot on turn 10 as he tried to overtake Maveric Viñales while Marquez made a move on race leader and main championship challenger Andrea Dovizioso. Lorenzo ended up taking out Dovizioso with Viñales also falling after being left nowhere to go. Valentino Rossi became another victim of the crash when he ran wide after braking late and TOYOTA GAZOO Racing won the 87th Le Mans 24 Hours with a one-two finish but their cars could be said to have finished in the wrong order. In a dramatic final hour Sébastien Buemi, Kazuki Nakajima and Fernando Alonso, in the #8 TS050 Hybrid, defended their Le Mans crown and secured the drivers’ World Championship in the process, but only because of a huge slice of luck. They ended up winning by 16.9 seconds from teammates Mike Conway, Kamui Kobayashi and José María López in the #7 after the latter had to pit for a puncture. Unfortunately, their crew changed the wrong wheel in a blunder that robbed them of victory when they had to pit again to get the correct wheel changed. Honda say a sensor malfunc-

The end result was that Marquez was left a clear run to the flag in his home GP in Cataluña, finishing 2.66 seconds ahead of second placed Fabio Quartararo, with Danilo Petrucci third and Alex Rins fourth. As the final hours approached, the gap remained relatively stable around two minutes and the focus switched to bringing the cars home safely. All appeared to be going to plan until the #7 experienced its dramas and Kazuki took the lead with less than an hour to go. Fernando Alonso said: “It is amazing to win Le Mans for the second time, but the win came really unexpectedly. We did not have the pace to win this race
against car #7 on track. Today luck was a big factor and this is part of motorsport. I feel for my teammates who are actually more than teammates, they are friends. “They would have deserved the victory, but the race chose us to win it.
