Scam warning EXPATRIATES, holidaymakers and travellers to the Costa Blanca have been warned about bank fraud after Guardia Civil officers arrested 35 suspects in connection with an international card scam. Police sources claimed more than €600,000 was swindled from about 210 people in Spain and 20 in five other countries. Guardia Civil officers arrested suspects in the Alicante region and Murcia as well as in Albacete, the Balearic Islands, Barcelona, Madrid, Malaga, Pamplona, Valencia and Vitoria.

Body found THE body of an 83-year-old man was pulled from the water at Playa Chica (northern La Manga) last Wednesday, and while medical staff tried to resuscitate the man, their efforts were in vain and he was pronounced dead at the scene.
Get online ALMORADÍ authorities have launched their ‘Retail Support Programme 2019,’ which will offer free training courses in social networking to small entrepreneurs, covering topics such as coordinated selling via Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp.
Attempted murder probe A DISPUTE between father and son resulted with the elder being arrested on suspicion of attempted murder. A fight between two men was reported in a Torrevieja aparthotel, with police reportedly arriving to find the son bleeding heavily from his sides and defensive wounds on his hands. The 35-year-old told officers that his father was responsible, and it was a heated argument over ‘old family quarrels’ which had resulted in his stabbing. The 69-year-old father was arrested and the knife was apparently discovered hidden in the basement. The father was brought before a judge last Friday where he was remanded into custody.

Rare fever contracted THREE Icelandic holidaymakers have been diagnosed with chikungunya fever after returning to their home country from the Costa Blanca, the first recorded case of someone contracting the disease in Spain. Officials with Spain’s Health Ministry in the Valencia Region have confirmed the tourists were diagnosed in a Reykjavik hospital. They had been staying in Alicante Province.
The first to be diagnosed was a 37year-old woman. Doctors later confirmed her sister and five-year-old son also had the illness. Valencia’s Generalitat has since activated disease control measures, with officials set to visit hospitals in Alicante Province to see if any other people have contracted the disease. Researchers from the universities of Alicante and Valencia are also set to

collect samples for study. Chikungunya is transmitted by mosquitoes and symptoms include feeling feverish, joint pain and rashes which usually develop about 12 days after exposure. The illness kills around one in every 1,000 people who contract it. Symptoms typically clear within a week but the disease can lead to long-term complications with joints in some cases.
A SUSPECTED drug dealer, 64, has been arrested in Guardamar del Segura. He was allegedly carrying 18 bags of cocaine with the express intention of selling it in local bars. Officers were watching the man on June 9, in the area of Luis Rivera Street, when he had frequented a number of bars in quick succession. Upon his arrest, he was searched and the drugs were seized. As well as the drugs wraps on his person, officers also found three more in the car, along with €243, assumed to be the proceeds of drug exchanges. After his arrest and confinement, a search of his home revealed various drugs paraphernalia and bank books with considerable balances, none of which could be explained. The police admit to being quizzical as to why a 64-year-old retired local man should carry out drug trafficking in such an open and foolish way, using his own vehicle to distribute the drugs and targeting customers in such a brazen fashion. He is currently in prison, awaiting judgement.

‘ P L A N C O P L A , ’ M u r c i a ’s beach safety and sea rescue campaign is about to launch, with more than 250 people involved - all using newer and safer equipment to ensure the safety of the masses visiting the coast. At its busiest time, 127 lookout posts will be manned.
Coast clean TWENTY-FIVE extra workers will be working to clean the Orihuela Costa. “Eleven will clean beaches and empty bins in the morning, the rest will clean the boardwalks and green areas in the afternoon,” said the mayor. This represents an almost doubling of the manpower responsible.
Language aid TWO new translators have been recruited by Orihuela Council to support the Guardia Civil. The purpose is to serve the victims of crimes in their language, advising them on the necessary steps to explain the facts, and also cancel bank cards and contact relevant embassies.
Bells ring THE Santa Maria Bells have now been restored and returned to the top of the church tower in Cartagena, after an eightmonth gap where the tower masonry was also renovated. It was feared that continuous ringing would damage the brickwork beyond repair.

Safe beaches
BAT nesting boxes are appearing in Bullas, near Murcia. The bats can apparently eat over a kilo of flies and mosquitoes in a single night, so a group of volunteers are installing the nesting boxes to safeguard them and to use the data next year as part of next year’s curriculum.

SCUBA divers continue the work of clearing up local seabeds. A group of 50 divers from Madrid joined others from as far as away as Brazil and Colombia at Bolnuevo Beach in Puerta de Mazarron. Over 200 kilograms of rubbish, plastic and other waste was collected.

TRADITION: Fiesta goers jump over bonfires on San Juan night.
Fiery fiesta THIS picture of Spanish men jumping over a bonfire comes as thousands prepare to do the same in one of the country’s biggest fiestas this Sunday. Jumping over bonfires at midnight is one of the many traditions of the Noche de San Juan fiesta (Saint John’s Eve). The festival closely coincides with midsummer celebrations held elsewhere in Europe and the world and also comes days after the Summer Solstice. San Juan evolved out of celebrations which traditionally took place the night before Saint John’s feast day.
John the Baptist, the cousin of Jesus Christ who baptised him at the beginning of his ministry as a rabbi, was born on June 24 according to Christian teachings. The way San Juan is celebrated throughout Spain varies from place to place. A common feature in Spain and across the world is the lighting of bonfires. The Spanish tend to light their fires on beaches, though they are also lit in some places inland including in Madrid.
The bonfires are one of three traditional elements of the fiesta, with their symbolism and significance traceable to pre-Christian pagan religions. Midnight sees fiesta goers run into the sea, which has its origin in water being seen as purifying and as working best with medicinal plants, another traditional element. Those celebrating then jump over the fires either for good luck or to make a wish, depending on the area. Fires were believed to ward off evil spirits in pagan cultures.

THE official College of Veterinary Surgeons is to receive a €5,000 subsidy from the acting government of the Murcia Region to support a campaign encouraging the adoption of abandoned cats and dogs. Last year, more than 3,000 dogs and almost 1,000 cats were reportedly left in the street by their owners, and with new laws across the region regarding disposal of such animals, pressure is piling on the relevant authorities to find acceptable resolutions. With this in mind, the body of vets, along with local government, are launching a campaign with the slogan, ‘Adopta, la felicidad no se compra’ (‘Adopt, happiness cannot be bought’). If you are struggling with a pet, or know someone who is, the authorities are requesting you seek assistance, instead of letting them die on the streets. Annually, 100,000 cats and dogs are abandoned in Spain.
ORIHUELA Council has announced it has installed 35 external defibrillators. Seven will be mobile (in police cars, for example) and the other 28 will be in fixed positions around the municipality. Mayor of Orihuela, Emilio Bascuñan, said: “It’s a day to be happy and satisfied, because we have an Orihuela that is more modern and more secure, and with the equipment we will be able to attend quickly any incident.” The device, once activated, makes an automated call to 112. While waiting for emergency services, previously trained personnel can use the device, also with a voice-activated help system. The devices even have a QR code so that people can scan it with their phone and find the exact location of the device. The project has been ongoing since the New Year, when authorities suspected a small number of people living at the same Los Ramos house were responsible for the drug distribution in the area. the operation, 20 officers were deployed to ensure the family, aged 18 to 37, were arrested quickly and without harm. When their house was searched, more than 100 cocaine wraps were reportedly found, 500 doses of methadone, large amounts of cash and jewellery, several watches and various items of drugs paraphernalia such as precision scales. Eight knives of various sizes were also discovered. The operation is ongoing and authorities are not ruling out fresh arrests.
Ex IRA members jailed TWO former IRA members have been sentenced to jail for laundering profits from tobacco smuggling through property purchases. Leonard Hardy and Donna Maguire - who was dubbed the Angel of Death - were jailed for two years by the High Court in Madrid for the scheme in which their illicit gains were invested in property, including one in Orihuela (Alicante). The couple had both been involved in a plot to bomb a British army base in Germany in the 1980s.
The court heard that until the time of his arrest in 2014, Leonard Hardy was engaged in ‘large-scale tobacco smuggling as the head of an organisation.’ The judgement noted that the known income of the couple could not explain how they managed to spend €987,410 on three properties - the other two were in Malaga. The court also ordered the seizure of the properties, or assets and cash of an equivalent value if they had been sold on.

Aerial Costa Blanca restored THE Segura Hydrographic Confederation (CHS) has completed the restoration of over 10,000 photographs captured by Julio Ruiz Alda on his flights at the beginning of the century. The aerial photos date back to the 1920s and cover a patchwork of the Costa Blanca South area. Alicante, Murcia, Albacete and Jaen are all the subject of the fascinating photographs. Restoration of the works began in 2002 in collaboration with the General Directorate of the Natural Environment. In 2014 another 4,000 frames were recovered and brought for treatment. Julio Ruiz Alda was a pioneer of Spanish aviation and was the founder of the Spanish Company of Aerial Photogrammetric Work, a department which was tasked with documenting areas of the region for irrigation purposes. These images represent the very first available aerial images of the area, and offer a fascinating insight into the changes that the past century has brought to the Segura Basin.
Sport for everyone ORIHUELA hosted a Clínica de Boccia on Saturday. Víctor Valverde, the councillor for Sports, said: “It is the first Boccia Clinic to be held in Orihuela, a paralympic sport designed for people with functional disabilities.” Boccia is a game where participants try to get a ball of blue or red as close as possible to a white target ball. Valverde stressed the importance of “bringing sport to all people regardless of their condition.”

Cycle routes SOFIA ÁLVAREZ, the councillor for Tourism at Orhihuela has revealed a map of tourist routes specifically aimed at bicycle riders. A total of 10 routes are highlighted going through different areas within the municipality and also towards towns further afield. “This is a commitment to bicycle tourism and the enhancement of Orihuela as a tourist destination prepared for this type of public linked to the sustainable mobility,” said Álvarez. It is a unique map, with which you can differentiate various routes with different colours depending on your experience. The map includes mountain routes, with information about their length and slope average as well as main points of tourist interest. Sexual abuse man arrested A 63-YEAR-OLD has been arrested in the Valencian province accused of luring workers into his home and then sexually abusing them. The victims were persuaded to enter the man’s home after applying for jobs to help care for him and to do domestic tasks. He allegedly posted numerous adverts on internet job sites and social media looking for home help. However, once in the property the man allegedly forced his workers into sexual relations, threatening them with exposing explicit pictures of them or denouncing them for working illegally in Spain. The National Police arrested the man after a brief investigation and he is awaiting a court appearance.

POPULAR: Scenes at Javea market. JAVEA’s traditional weekend market by the beach has now given way to the Summer Fair. This is the seventh year running that Amata (the regional craft association) has joined forces with local shopkeepers to liven up the promenade along the sea front with a craft fair. Dubbed as ‘a real craft fair, with real craft workers,’ their slogan is ‘Artesanía de Autor’ - translating loosely to made and sold by the craftsmen on site.
Indeed, from its inception in 1998, Amata remains true to its original philosophy, which is that only goods made by the people on the stalls can be sold on the craft fairs it organises. That is why more and more people have come to appreciate this special market. The market is open every night at 7pm from tomorrow (Friday, June 21) until September 2 - except for a few days when the locals celebrate their fiestas.

Monies raised AN impressive €1,500 was raised by the Rotary Club of Torrevieja in aid of AFA, the Alzheimer’s Association of Torrevieja. They meet every Monday at 9pm at the Real Club Nautical of Torrevieja with the purpose of establishing new aid projects to various associations and local groups. Many funds are raised for international causes. Indeed, a number of members reported back after swapping ideas with other Rotary Clubs in areas like San Javier, Moscow and St Peters-
burg. An earlier convention in Hamburg saw the Torrevieja group not only representing themselves, but also receiving an award for a project with Ukranian children. The group are proud to be the first in Spain to receive the ‘Rotary Mediterranean Outstanding Award.’ They were formed in 1993, and invite people from all areas and backgrounds to exchange ideas and take actions with the sole purpose of improving the world. Family turned away A MAN claims he was refused service in a Catalan restaurant because he was wearing a polo shirt with the Spanish flag on it. According to local press a family went to the establishment in the Girona town of Ripoll only to be turned away. But a statement from the restaurant disputes the facts. It says the customers left of their own volition after a cook told them that their clothes made him ‘nervous.’

Tackling illegal migration SPAIN has handed over 22 vehicles to the Senegalese authorities at a ceremony where a 2007 migration agreement was renewed. The event took place in Dakar, where nine pickup trucks and 13 quads worth €294,000 were donated to help tackle irregular migration. They will be used for surveillance in a country which,
due to its proximity to the Canary Islands, was at the beginning of the 2000s one of the most popular launching points for migrants trying to reach Spain. At the end of 2018, Spain also donated 75 vehicles to Morocco and this year delivered 11 to Mauritania, two countries with access to the Atlantic Ocean and key launching points for
migrants trying to reach Spain. The Senegalese and Spanish governments have been collaborating on migration and security issues since 2007, mainly by controlling vessels that could be used clandestinely in the Atlantic. Land, air and sea patrols are deployed in order to reduce the number of arrivals of these vessels to the Canary Islands.

THE quality of Spanish air improved in 2018, with new analysis showing the amount of pollutants has fallen, but remains over legal limits. The Climate Change Ministry’s Air Quality report found the fall was less significant for nitrogen dioxide (NO2), particulates (PM10) and ozone (O3). Environmental policies including Madrid’s low emission zone and the electrification of public transport are beginning to have a positive impact, Ministry officials said. The amount of pollutants exceeded limits 34 times in 2018 compared to 36 times the year before. The regions of Madrid, Andalucia, Castilla La Mancha, Valencia and Murcia saw pollution rise above limits the most, according to the report.

Family support SPAIN has ranked 14th for its family support policies in a table of 31 European countries. The ranking, from the UN’s UNICEF children’s agency, showed Spain came ahead of Britain and Ireland in terms of policies to help parents with their children. Sweden, Norway, Iceland, Estonia and Portugal topped the table which was published as part of the Are Rich Countries More Family-Friendly? report. UNICEF Executive Director Henrietta Fore said: “We need governments to help provide parents with the support they need to create an enabling environment for their children.”
They describe how several vehicles had to swerve out of his way and pedestrians were forced to jump clear when he drove onto the verge. Police tried to stop him by putting on their lights and siren, but he carried on for 20 kilometres towards Tudela Veguin. Eventually he was stopped after a collision with the police car. Eco-friendly autonomous bus A SELF-DRIVING, zero pollution bus four times safer than a traditional car is set to launch in spring 2020 in Lanzarote. The CITIES project autonomous electric bus has no driver or steering wheel and is set to revolutionise ecological transportation. The bus does not generate harmful waste and it is estimated that the swap will mean a
reduction of CO2 emissions of up to 469 tons per year. The bus will circulate through the Timanfaya National Park transporting almost one and half million visitors annually. The costs of consumption of fossil fuels of traditional buses currently making the route will be eliminated, amounting to an estimated €180,000 per year.

Man arrested for raping tourist in Sri Lanka A SRI LANKAN man has been arrested for allegedly raping a Spanish tourist back in May 2019. The incident reportedly took place in the Sri Lankan town of Kandy as the woman was sleeping in her hotel room.

According to reports the woman had met the alleged attacker hours before as they were staying in the same hotel. The detained claimed to be family of the owner of the establishment.
As the woman slept the man took advantage of the poor condition of the door lock and forced his way in before allegedly attacking her. The victim left the hotel and reported the crime to the Spanish
consulate in Sri Lanka along with the Tourist Police. She was then hospitalised for two days for checks. After she was released she travelled back to Spain for further checks and was interviewed by
officials where she presented documentation and emails from the attacker revealing his identity. The man was arrested thanks to the cooperation of the Spanish authorities and the Sri Lankan National Police

Blaze bodies TWO people found dead in a house fire had both been stabbed. The bodies of Ana LucĂa, 50, and Salvador, 40, were discovered in a house in Cordoba by firefighters who arrived to put out the blaze. A break from the camps A TOTAL of 4,286 Saharawi refugee children are about to spend the summer in Spain. The 10 to 11-year-olds are swapping their places in refugee camps for homes in Spain under the Vacaciones en Paz (Vacations in Peace) 2019 programme. It has been organised by the State
Coordination of Associations in Solidarity with the Sahara (CEAS Sahara) and other associations in solidarity with the Saharawi people. The youngsters will spend two months spread around the country living with Spanish families to get away from the harsh conditions in the Tindouf refugee camps in Algeria.
Temperatures there can reach 50 degrees in the shade at the height of summer. While here they will also get medical check-ups. In the last six years (2013-2018) 27,201 children have been welcomed into Spain from refugee camps in Tindouf.

€2 million medicine fraud SEVEN people including three doctors and a chemist have been arrested in Tenerife for a €2 million prescriptions fraud. The doctors would issue false prescriptions and the chemist collect subsidies from the health service despite never actually dispensing the drugs. The method was for the doctors, who had access to the electronic prescriptions service, to find patients from another part of Tenerife who qualified for the maximum subsidies for medicines. They would enter on the computer system that the unsuspecting patients had had a consultation
with them and generate a treatment plan. This would involve the prescription of high-value medicines. The prescriptions were printed out and handed over to a businessman who acted as intermediary. He would take them to the chemist in Santa Cruz de Tenerife. The medicines were rarely dispensed, but were ‘sold’ repeatedly with the chemist claiming the subsidies each time. The sale of these drugs reached such extremely high figures that the pharmacy invoiced for more doses of these medicines than every other chemist in the Canary Islands put together.
Children to visit Pope STUDENTS from across Spain will travel to Rome this November to present their projects for the ‘Design for Change Spain’ campaign. From November 27-30, 100 students from 25 schools across Spain will make the trip to Rome to visit Pope Francis to show the Catholic Church leader their entries into the nationwide campaign. The proposal is part of a global movement in more than 65 countries that give educators and teachers the training to encourage ‘design thinking,’ to allow children to use their creative talents to push global changes. So far over 1,650 teachers have developed over 700 individual projects to 28,400 students. The road trip to Rome is part of the ‘Caravan of Change,’ bringing youngsters together to show off their projects at the Vatican.

Pedro Sanchez looks set to face an investiture vote, a ballot of Congress of Deputies members on his taking office as prime minister, in early July. Sanchez and his left-leaning Partido Socialista (PSOE) will formally take power if the inve s titure vote go es smoothly. The path to power was initially hard due to arithmetic in the C ongre s s of D e puties. PSOE won 123 seats following A pril’s e le c tion, w el l ahead of the second largest party, the conservative Partido Popular (PP), but more than 50 seats short of a majority. Acting Deputy Prime Minister Carmen Calvo said another election is not going to happen because voters had already given PSOE a mandate. She called on other parties to back Sanchez’s bid to become prime minister. Mayors sworn in MAYORS across Spain officially took up their posts on Saturday following last month’s local elections. Control of Madrid City Council, previously governed by a leftist coalition led by Manuela Carmena, has now passed to rightwing parties. The conservative Partido Popular’s (PP) Jose Luis MartinezAlmeida is the new mayor of Spain’s capital. He heads a rightwing coalition which includes the centrist Ciudadanos and far-right Vox. Barcelona mayor Ada Colau, of the leftist Barcelona en Comu, narrowly clung on in city hall after the left-leaning Partido Socialista (PSOE) and Ciudadanos backed her. Joan Ribo also stays on as mayor of Valencia with the regionalist Compromis and with PSOE’s support. Juan Mari Aburto, of the Partido Nacionalista Vasco (PNV), is staying on for his second term in Bilbao with the backing of the Basque branch of PSOE. PSOE’s Juan Espadas has managed to stay on as mayor of Sevilla and will run the council with a minority administration. Adelante’s Jose Maria Gonzalez will stay on as Cadiz’s mayor and govern with an absolute majority.

Jobless fall THE jobless total in Spain dropped by 105,000 people between January and the end of April to a total of 3,165,000. This made the unemployment rate 13.8 per cent compared to the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) average of 5.2 per cent, according to latest data.
This makes Spain’s rate the highest in the OECD if Greece is discounted, as no April figures are available for that country (in March the figure was 18.1 per cent). The EU recorded an average rate of 6.4 per cent and the Eurozone nations 7.6 per cent. By gender, in Spain the unemployment rate among
women is 15.8 per cent for women compared to 12.1 per cent for men. Unemployment among young people aged 15 to 24 reached a rate of 32.7 per cent in Spain, above the OECD average (11.1 per cent), and for those aged over 25 it was 12.4 per cent, also higher than that of the OECD (4.5 per cent).

Calls for cancer screening A REGIONAL forum will take place as part of the Congress of the Spanish Society of Pneumology and Thoracic Surgery (SEPAR) in Santiago de Compostela to discuss the urgent call for a lung cancer screening programme in Spain. Spain sits in a ‘privileged position’ with its national health system and should be ‘a pioneer ’ in the field according to Doctor Luis Seijo. Worldwide, lung cancer has the highest mortality rate of all the different strains of the disease, higher than colon, prostate and breast all put together. One of the main reasons for the high rate is that the disease is often caught in the advanced stages and therefore too late to effectively treat. The largest cause of lung cancer in Spain continues to be tobacco smoke, however there is also a strong percentage that is caused by burning
of biomass, wood burning stoves, air pollution and radon gas. A large concern is air pollution, contributed by diesel car emissions and industrial pollution as there has been a direct link between the two causes and an increased number of asthma sufferers especially in young children.
Blood donations SPAIN has come sixth in a global ranking of blood donations as data showed they save an average of 80 people a day. The latest blood donation index also found the average Spanish donor is male and aged between 31 and 40. Male blood donors are not permitted to give blood more than four times a year while
the limit for women is three times. Pregnant women are advised to wait six months after giving birth before donating. British residents in Spain can also donate. People who lived in Britain between 1980 and 1996 are prohibited due to the mad cow disease outbreak which took place at that time.

2.1 mn on the verge A TOTAL of 2.1 million people in Spain live with the uncertainty of becoming homeless. This accounts for 4 per cent of households, according to the 8th Foessa Report on Social Exclusion and Development in Spain, which notes an “entrenchment” of social exclusion. The study, which was presented at the headquarters of Caritas Spain in Madrid, has been prepared by a team of 125 researchers from 30 universities and 13 research organisations. It is based on a survey of 29,000
people in 11,600 households. The data show that a total of 8.5 million people in Spain are in a situation of social exclusion. This is 18.4 per cent of the population (almost seven points less than in 2013) but still 1.2 million more than before the crisis. In addition, 4.1 million suffer severe social exclusion and more than 1.8 million are what is known as “expellees.” These are people with so many day-to-day problems that they need urgent help. This is three times as many as in 2007, when they numbered 600,000.

French far-right By Joe Gerrard SPAIN’S government has distanced itself from comments made by France’s ruling liberal party after it warned the centrist Ciudadanos against dealing with the far-right. Government spokesperson Isabel Celaa said last week that Madrid had ‘nothing to do’ with France’s ruling Le Republique en Marche’s (LREM) intervention in Spanish politics. It comes as party figures
spoke out against pacts Ciudadanos has struck with the farright Vox, saying they are ‘not an option’ for liberal or progressive parties. “We look at the Spanish political situation with attention because Ciudadanos is today a central partner in the new group we are building in the European Parliament,” LREM’s PieyreAlexandre Anglade said. Ciudadanos said it would continue to co-operate with LREM in the new European
liberal formation which both have joined following elections to the bloc’s parliament in May. The parties have launched the Renew Europe group along with others from across the EU. The party is a rebranded version of the Alliance for Liberals and Democrats for Europe group (ALDE). It comes as local branches of Ciudadanos were mulling potential pacts with the conservative Partido Popular (PP) and Vox at local and regional levels.

Organ donation Living in Spain can bring with it an array of issues which may not have been encountered when living in the UK. There are lots of things to consider, and we are here to help try to make the transition and life in Spain a little easier by compiling a series of helpful facts and figures relating to a variety of topics. AS of 2010, Spain has operated an ‘opt-out’ (or presumed consent) system for deceased organ donation. This addresses the rate or refusal of potential donors or their families in giving permission for the use of organs. The rate of family refusal in Spain is 13 per cent, compared to 37 per cent in England (according to the National Transplant Organisation figures - ONT). According to the ONT, Brits living in Spain are more likely to donate their organs than their countrymen back home. It’s not necessary to have a donor card. What is important is to let family members and loved ones know your wishes in terms of organ donation. Figures published by the Spanish ONT in 2017 put the country as world leader in donation and transplants, reaching a new record with 46.9 donors per million people and 5.261 transplants. Spain has been a global leader in organ donation and transplantation for the past 26 years. Broken down by organ, there were 3,269 kidney surgeries (up 9 per cent on 2016), 1,247 liver transplants (up 8 per cent), 304 heart procedures (8 per cent rise), 363 lung surgeries (up 18 per cent), 70 pancreas transplants (down 4 per cent) and eight bowel surgical procedures (up 100 per cent). According to the National Transplant Organisation (ONT), these surgeries are equivalent to six donors and 14 surgical procedures a day. In addition, Spain saw a new record in bone marrow donation last year, with 78,291 new donors and an increase of 196 per cent over the previous year. At this rate, the country could reach its target of 400,000 bone marrow donors well before the mid-2020 goal. In Spain the number of those on the waiting list was reduced to 4,896 in 2017, from 5,480, although the number of children waiting for organs increased to 74, from 48 a year earlier. Lung and heart are viable for four-six hours after death, liver and pancreas 24 hours, kidney 72 hours, corneas 14 days, bone and skin five years, and heart valves up to 10 years. Small intestines, veins, tendons and ligaments can also be donated. A single organ donor can save up to eight people and a single tissue donor may enhance the lives of up to 50 people. TINY BOATS: A total of 79 people were smuggled in four small launches.
People smuggling By Dilip Kuner SEVEN Algerians have been arrested for their part in a people smuggling network. Four of them transported migrants to Spain, while the other three acted as ‘receivers’ for when they arrived in the country. They arranged either for the migrants to stay in Spain or organised their transfer to other EU countries. As part of the operation four tiny boats were intercepted which were carrying a total of 79 people, including a heavily preg-
nant woman and a three-year-old child, in overcrowded ‘terrible’ conditions. Investigators discovered the leaders of the smuggling gang were based in the Algerian town of Oran, with more gang members in Alicante who ‘managed’ the migrants once they arrived in Spain. After a surveillance operation Guardia Civil decided to intercept several boats. Sources say that the skippers of the fast launches used by the smugglers refused to heave to and led Guardia Civil on a highspeed sea chase.

SPAIN and Mexico have begun attempts to mend their relations after a dispute broke out when the latter’s president called for the former to apologise for its colonial past. Both countries commemorated the 80th anniversary of the arrival of exiles loyal to the Spanish Republic at the end of the civil war last Thursday, June 13.
Secretary of State for Global Spain Irene Lozano is also visiting the country. She is the first Spanish official to visit since President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador called on King Felipe to apologise for Spain’s conquest of parts of the Americas. Lozano said: “I bring from Spain a message of friendship, gratitude and
recognition to Mexico for its solidarity and courage with our exiles at a time that was dramatic for our country.” Spain refused to apologise when Lopez Obrador called on it to apologise for its colonial legacy. It comes as both countries mark the 500th anniversary of the arrival of Spanish conquistador Hernan Cortes in Mexico.

Student stabs biology teacher A THIRD-YEAR student in Valencia stabbed his biology teacher as 2017-2018 data shows 13 per cent increase in assaults on teachers in Spain. The assailant, at the Institute of Secondary Education (ESO) la Misericordia, became enraged as the teacher gave out grades for the second trimester, took a knife from his backpack and attacked his teacher’s shoulder and arm. Classmates pushed tables and threw chairs to stop the minor who had never previously demonstrated ag-
gressive behaviors. Afterwards, the attacker hid on the roof of the school, and the teacher was transferred to the General Hospital of Valencia. The police reported that the minor did not resist arrest. According to sources from the hospital the teacher, 40, has now been discharged from hospital. The 2017-2018 data from the Union Teacher’s Advocate shows a 13 per cent increase in assaults on teachers including insults, threats and violence.

Lazaro, born in a livestock farm in O Grove suffered hypoxia, a lack of oxygen to the brain, during childbirth. Iné s Tr i l l o , c o -fo u n d er o f th e Vacaloura Animal Sanctuary, a shelter for farm animals in Santiago de Compostela, became aware of Lazaro’s case
via public television. Trillo said: “The shelter will give him a decent life where he is not to be sentenced to death because of his disability.” Trillo and the team at Vacaloura devised a metal framed and harnessed wheelchair, the first of its kind in Spain to allow Lazaro to move comfortably. The Vacaloura Animal Sanctuary guarantee Lazaro will be taken care of until he dies a natural death.
Toddler in swimming pool tragedy A 19-MONTH-OLD toddler has died a week after falling into a swimming pool in Spain. The accident took place a fortnight ago in Salceda de Caselas (Pontevedra). The child’s family pulled the youngster out and alerted emergency services. Medics performed artificial resuscitation and the victim was taken to hospital by helicopter in a critical condition. However, the toddler never recovered.
The mayor of Granátula, Félix Herrera is pleased with the progress that the tourist attraction has made. “This tourist resource has managed to attract a varied and considerable public to the town, it has also become a place they visit as a group or as a family, many people with disabilities visit the museum as it is prepared so this group can touch, see and experience its interior.”

Two wheel fun CYCLING is such a popular sport in Spain that there are competitions taking place almost every weekend in one town or another. DANCE SCHOOL: On point with ballet. THE last week in Catral has seen so much going on with the population growing with large numbers of tourists (both Spanish and foreign) joining in the fun. Every type of event has been enjoyed with the local dance school giving an excellent performance of ballet, whilst the highlight so far was the grand parade with people dressing up and partying in the streets. La Fuente / Opening hours call IT may be too late for this year, but local business associations are calling for sevenday-a-week opening in Orihuela Costa, including La Fuente, for June 2019. The town hall had asked the regional Valencia government for the go-ahead to permit unrestricted opening on the first two Sundays of this June, but permission was denied. Now the call has gone out for the regional government to reconsider for next year, with businesses saying that June is the start of the high season, and visitors to La Fuente and other parts of Ori-

Since 2016, an average of 88,000 people have visited the coast for the first and second weekend of the month. Once here they find they cannot shop on Sunday, whilst commercial centres in
neighbouring Murcia can open, leading to a loss of business for the town. This is not a problem for businesses in La Fuente at the moment as Sunday opening is now permitted until January, but then restrictions will kick in once again until mid-June 2020. Representatives of the Association of Merchants of the Municipality of Orihuela
(ACMO) say it wants to create a true summer tourism environment as a driving force for local businesses. As regulations stand, opening is permitted on Sundays and public holidays between Palm Sunday and the Sunday following Easter Monday, then on Sundays and public holidays between June 15 and the first Sunday in January.
Speaking the lingo MORE help for foreigners needing police assistance has been brought in. Orihuela Council has brought in two new translators who will be stationed on the coast to help those who don’t speak Spanish. Residents and visitors of La Fuente can take advantage of the service to make reports to the Guardia Civil or Local Police stationed at the town hall’s office on Orihuela Costa.

/ Campoamor Golf NEWS IN a bid to boost the tourism offer of La Fuente, Campoamor and other parts of Orihuela Costa, the councillor for Tourism, Sofia Alvarez, has presented a new map of cycling routes. A total of 10 routes have been selected, which will offer tourists suggested itineraries to see the different parts of the town. She said: “This is a commitment to cycling tourism and the enhancement of Orihuela as a tourist destination ready for cyclists and linked to sustainable mobility.” To back up the routes as a way of boosting visitor numbers, the town will promote itself as a destination for cyclists at various national and international tourism fairs.

THE new governing team of San Fulgencio Council has been sworn in after the socialist PSOE and centre-right Ciudadanos formally signed a pact. Just over 5,000 of the town’s almost 8,000 inhabitants are non-Spaniards and almost 3,000 of them British, a fact which helps explain why the PSOE now has two expat councillors - Samantha Hull and former Euro Weekly News writer Darren Parmenter. The PSOE and Ciudadanos explained that despite coming from different places on the political spectrum they were convinced their pact was the best way forward for the municipality and that they would work together for the good of the town and its residents. New town hall bosses

spend more time visiting La Marina and sharing responsibility for the urbanisation in order to give foreign residents a better chance of sharing their concerns.
A likely story GUARDIA CIVIL have arrested a 24-year-old Algerian suspected of a string of burglaries in San Fulgencio and other parts of the coast. He was caught after a householder challenged him when the alleged burglar was found in the expat’s home. Initially the intruder claimed to be a gas man who was there to check the installations. But as the householder had neither asked for a gas inspection nor given the man permission to enter, he called police. The intruder escaped, but thanks to a description given by the householder a man was arrested nearby. Guardia Civil officers searched his car and found numerous articles including mobile phones, jewellery, a watch, garage door remote controls and cash in Euros and Sterling. It was found that much of this was property stolen from homes in San Fulgencio, Torrevieja and Guardamar del Segura. Most has now been returned to its owners.

AS part of the ongoing Moors and Christians festivities, tomorrow night (Friday, June 21) sees the exciting and historic
Correfocs event start at 10pm from the Paseo de la Iglesias in Rojales. The concept is one that goes
back hundreds of years to the Ball de Diables, but only reemerged following the death of Franco and is particularly popular in CataluĂąa. It sees a parade of devils go through the town lighting fireworks, often attached to pitchforks or hanging from ropes along the route as they dance to beating drums and in the past have been known to let off additional fireworks amongst groups of spectators. Although in theory, this practice is generally frowned upon,
anybody who decides to view the procession should either aim to keep well back or dress sensibly to ensure they don’t get burned if they get too close. The theory is this is a battle between good and evil, although many feel it is just an excuse to let off a load of noisy fireworks and scare the children who are bound to attend. One thing is for sure, pets should be kept well away from the event and possibly have some form of prescribed sedation to keep them calm.

Aussie Bowls result Rubbish
THIS year ’s HomeEspana Aussie Pairs bowls competition saw 30 teams from seven different clubs arrive at the El Cid Bowls Club in Benidoleig which had been triumphant in 2018. The three-day contest saw some exciting competition which saw a win by the BBC bowls club Benitachell who beat Harry and Jackie Johnston from Quesada in the final. There is a thriving bowls club in Ciudad Quesada which welcomes new players, be they novices or old hands.

THE Rojales Council has issued a public apology on its Facebook page due to the problem of collection of rubbish. It has stated that the new company appointed to arrange for the management and removal of rubbish has encountered some problems and that many of the containers on the roads have been seen to be in very poor condition. They have been instructed to clean up in all of the areas affected and to install new bins as soon as is possible in order to ensure that the streets are perfectly clear without the smell of rotting garbage. At least one resident of Ciudad Quesada posted a response which said ‘Mine in Ciudad Quesada is already changed, thank you very much for your management and information.’

Some star entertainment THE stage may well be small but the entertainment was big when Paul Young and Los Pacaminos visited Villamartin Plaza. Playing a set of Tex-Mex music people lucky enough to catch a view had a great night of free entertainment. The plaza is one of the more forward-thinking commercial centres on the Costa and likes to think of ways to make the experience of dining there as entertaining as possible. Thanks to the fact that the restaurants have terraces which offer views of the stage it is possible to sit, enjoy a meal and take in some top acts without having to pay out a fortune. Plaza bosses have lined up a great programme of entertainment for the summer. Paul Young is the biggest name to perform so far, but there has already been a string of great acts. And there are plenty more in the coming weeks with some of the best local musicians on the coast due to perform along with ‘headliners’ from the UK including members of the Animals and Les McKeown’s Bay City Rollers. Music nights are held on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays.

La Zenia NEWS LA ZENIA will get valuable publicity when handball championship ‘Arena 1,000 Beaches of Orihuela,’ is held between July 5 and 7. Last year’s edition was televised nationally on Spanish channel Teledeporte, picking up an audience of 200,000. It was also viewed by a large online audience as more than 20 hours of the event was streamed live, and it had more than 1,235,000 interactions on social media networks. Baby rescued FIREFIGHTERS rescued a one-year-old girl when she was accidently locked into her parents’ car. It was parked in the full heat of the day outside the Zenia Boulevard shopping centre when the parents realised they had left the keys in the car with the child inside. They immediately alerted emergency services who dispatched a unit from Torrevieja fire station. The firefighters smashed the driver’s side window to rescue the baby.

SEIZED: Italian police led the operation in which Spain was involved.
4.7 million fakes seized SPANISH police were involved in an international operation that led to more than 4.7 million counterfeit products being seized. Investigators across 18 countries had 16 400 social media accounts suspended and 3,300 websites selling fake goods were closed in the EU-wide operation called Aphrodite II. The online fake goods marketers were selling
a large variety of counterfeit items including clothes and accessories, sports equipment, illegal IPTV set-top boxes, medicines, spare car parts, mobile phones, miscellaneous electronic devices, perfumes and cosmetics. The operation led to the arrest of more than 30 suspects and reported 110 others to respective judicial authorities.
According to Europol: “Fake products sold on social media can be extremely dangerous. Lacking any quality control and not complying legal norms, fake toys, medicines, body care products, fake spare car parts, inks and material used to produce imitation luxury products and clothes can be harmful to consumer health.�

Regulator to take on cartels
THE European Commission (EC) has approved plans for Spain’s Santander and Mapfre to create a new bancassurance company for vehicles and small firms. The EC said the firms would be allowed to join together for the deal after finding it would not pose problems to the European Economic Area. The link between the two firms would have a limited impact on the Spanish market meaning competition problems were not likely, the EC added. It comes after the two companies agreed to launch the service in January.

Madrid leads in growth forecast
THE Madrid Region is forecast to have the highest rate of economic growth in Gross Domestic Product (GDP) terms this year, according to a new study. The Foundation of Savings Banks’ (Funcas) report on regional growth forecast that the economy of the region would grow by 2.8 per cent this year. Cantabria is expected to have the second highest with 2.6 per cent, followed by Navarra with 2.5, Castilla-La Mancha with 2.4 and Galicia, 2.3. Andalucia is expected to grow by

The Spanish rate of GDP growth is predicted to be 2.2 per cent this year, according to government figures quoted in the report. The data comes as National Institute of Statistics (INE) figures from
last year also forecast high growth rates in Madrid and Cantabria. Funcas’ new study took those forecasts into account as well as data collected at the end of 2018 when growth data for Spain was revised down. The Foundation said Madrid, Navarra and the Basque Country’s growth could see sharper slowdowns than Spain has experienced overall. It comes as officials and economists continue to expect lower GDP growth for this year than earlier predictions due to global economic uncertainty caused by Brexit and USChina-EU trade war.
New highs for staff absences A TOTAL of 753,000 working days were lost due to worker absences in 2018, the highest number on record, costing Spanish companies an estimated €6.9 billion a new report showed. Adecco’s report found 2018’s absence rate stood at 5.3 per cent. The figure, which refers to the percentage of hours missed in a work day, tops the previous record set in 2009 of 5.2 per cent. The rise was driven by an increase in illnesses and out-ofwork accidents which numbered more than 5.2 million cases, the report found.

Decathlon sales fall SALES at the sports store chain Decathlon fell by 3 per cent to €1.5 billion in 2018, with net profits down 19 per cent year-onyear to €97 million. The company’s latest figures showed the falls came as Decathlon invested €35 million into its Spanish operation last year. Company CEO Javier Lopez said that investment and changes in stores were responsible for the decrease. It comes as the company plans to invest a further €41 million in Spain this year. Almost two-thirds of the funds are set to go towards its digitisation project which aims to speed up Decathlon’s delivery service.
Wage rise SPANISH government officials have reached an agreement with the CSIF public sector workers union to raise wages by 0.25 per cent next month on top of an increase linked to economic output (Gross Domestic Product, GDP).
Buying land SUPERMARKET chain Mercadona has bought six plots of land in the Parc Sagunt area of the Valencia Region for €16.6 million as part of plans to build a new logistics warehouse, adding 136,328 square metres to its current holdings there.
China woos Spanish companies A TOTAL of 50 Chinese investors and entrepreneurs travelled to Madrid last week to meet Spanish companies as Beijing continues to seek international backing for a global infrastructure project. The meeting involved more than 300 Spanish and Chinese companies. It comes as China tries to woo companies for its new Belt and Road initiative, a series of infrastructure programmes in
more than 152 countries. China is thought to be trying to win over Spanish companies because of the country’s economic ties to Latin America and North Africa. But some Spanish investors are wary. A KMPG report on the Chinese trip found weak institutions, an unfavourable business climate and the political structure of the East Asian country represented risk factors for Spanish companies.

LEAPY LEE SAYS IT OTHERS THINK IT I TRULY am becoming heartily peeved with people writing to remind me that I am ‘also an immigrant.’ Usually these informants are new readers and, although I am delighted to welcome them to my scribbles, it also means they have not read a number of my past columns in which I have more than covered this particular subject. So to all the wags who still think they are being clever, and occasionally quite nasty in their observations, I am completely aware that I am ‘also an immigrant.’ I am actually quite a proud immigrant. Many years ago, due to personal reasons (well chronicled in my books), I left the UK and, after some years in the Middle East, moved to Spain where I have resided for the last 35 years. This country has been good to me. It has educated four of my children, two of which have married Spanish locals, and my knowledge of the language is moderately passable. I originally brought some £50,000 into the country (which in 1983 was no small sum!) and, through unfortunate timing and various business ventures, managed to lose most of it over the next two or three years. During my time here, I have integrated to the best of my ability, helped support the local tourist industry and earned myself a Spanish pension. Although politically minded, I have never seriously

I feel that as an immigrant I have two choices. Stay and accept all that my host country has to offer, or leave! Through it all, I have however remained a true
British patriot. I am proud of my heritage. Proud also of the fact that both my father and grandfather, laid their lives on the line with millions of others to preserve Britain’s freedom and democracy. I am also disgusted by the way the country of my birth is slowly being brought to its knees by
ungrateful foreign spongers, greedy billionaires and dubious immigrants, who take advantage of its hospitality and, under the guise of diversity, would destroy its culture altogether. I am constantly enraged by deceitful, self-serving politicians, who either have some ulterior motive or are naïve almost beyond belief. I am a staunch Brexiteer. I am firmly convinced that only by ridding ourselves of the yolk of Brussels will our misguided children learn to stand on their own two feet, respect their country and regain the pride and patriotism that inspired the youngsters of yore to fight, and die for what they believed in. One thing I do try to avoid - although it is sometimes difficult - is hypocrisy. I do always endeavour to practise what I preach. I have nothing against immigration. In fact I believe it can often be a good thing. Providing the visitors retain the same attitude and respect toward their host country as I maintain myself. Unfortunately the majority of aliens that are pouring into Europe at this time appear to have a different agenda altogether. I AM angry. Again. So angry I need to lie down in a dark room and let my heart rate stabilise a bit. Meanwhile, why not flick ahead to the crossword page or go and make that cup of coffee… Hey, me again. Apologies for the short break but pleased to report the heart rate’s just about stabilised. But why so angry? The reason is what I just read about the inquest into the London Bridge terror attack. How victims of the terrorists were left disastrously in the lurch by paramedics. Health and Safety legislation has undeniably saved many lives and prevented many serious injuries. But the underlying problem is the threat of lawsuits, the consequent blame culture and closing of ranks when an emergency service worker makes a genuine mistake whilst carrying out his job. Those criticised for their ‘H&S caution’ will be hamstrung by the innumerable protocols imposed by managers when they started work. In turn, these managers will have been fully apprised of their responsibility towards the organisation to cover its back and avoid running up huge costs from frivolous lawsuits or increased insurance premiums.

LEGALLY SPEAKING Can they call AGM by e-mail? Spain’s Horizontal Law specifies the procedure for calling the AGM in Article 16 and distribution is defined in Article 9. There is no mention of e-mail communication. The AGM is a very important meeting for owners. To notify it by e-mail does not give a reliable proof of service as owners can change their address and forget to notify the community. Owners may not have a way to print any documents. Notification of the AGM could be e-mailed but should the total package with the Agenda and Budget be sent in accordance with the HPA Article? R P (Costa del Sol)

Will a third of the world’s PCs simply stop in January, asks Terence Kennedy MY wife’s venerable laptop is under bombardment right now, and the perpetrator is Microsoft. The reason: she’s clinging onto the ‘obsolete’ Windows 7. Read their dire warnings and you could easily believe her computing world will implode when Windows 7 ‘expires’ a few months from now. It will be no more, cease to be, ex-Windows. That’s radical talk, given that a third of the world’s users still swear by what many believe was Microsoft’s best-ever operating s y s t e m . S u r e l y t h e y c a n ’t j u s t flick the switch on January 14? T h e y c a n ’t , a n d t h e y w o n ’t . What they will do is simply freeze Windows 7 in time from that date. No more patches, updates, bug fixes, security solutions. If that doesn’t bother you, you can indeed keep using it forever, or at least until the computer itself dies. At which stage you will be unable to activate it again on
CLOSING WINDOWS: Ceasing to be? another machine even if you’ve got handfuls of kosher serial numbers, tough luck. Microsoft has had a hard sell trying to move users to the allsinging, all-dancing Windows 10, the final number in the progression as 10 now just keeps getting updated and improved forever more. T h e y h a v e m a n a g e d t o p e rsuade 56 per cent of us to move t o Wi n d o w s 1 0 , a t t h e l a t e s t
count. But a stubborn 33 per cent swear by 7, and then there are the oddball diehards: 6 per cent on the dog’s dinner which was Windows 8, half a per cent still on the truly terrible Vista, and a luddite 1.6 per cent clinging on to the ancient XP for dear life. I n c l u d i n g B r i t a i n ’s g o o d o l d NHS, bless their cotton swabs. I n m a n y c a s e s y o u c a n ’t u p grade because your hardware simply won’t handle it.
If you remember Microsoft’s k i n d o ff e r o f a f r e e m i g r a t i o n from 7 to 10, that boat sailed a long time ago. Last time I looked it costs about a hundred smackers to make the move. Or for not much more you could buy a cheap computer with 10 pre-installed. The gloom and doom scenario for sticking with 7 is that if an unpatched vulnerability is found (at this late stage, really?), hackers will exploit it, and Microsoft won’t fix it. But your anti-virus program (you do have one, don’t you?) will keep updating to keep you safe, and many of your other apps like browsers, e-mail and office suite, can continue to be updated (‘patched’ in the jargon) in the usual way. So: like the famous Mark Twain quote, rumours of Windows 7’s death have been greatly exaggerated. Happy obsolescence.
IF you’re feeling besieged by Microsoft’s warnings, ask yourself how long you expect your computer to last. Most PCs pre-installed with Windows 7 will be between seven and 10 years old. That’s a pretty good run in an era when technology can have the life of a geriatric fruit-fly. Actually buying Windows 10 retail is pretty bad value, given that manufacturers of new computers pay Microsoft just a fraction of that price to pre-install it on their machines. There is another route. Join me in the shadows and I’ll tell you. You could take your chance buying an ‘OEM’ (factory-install) copy for €10 or up, openly on offer from plenty of absolutely legit sites like Amazon. I have, I did, and they worked. Mostly.

BARRY DUKE A WHILE back I wrote about how I threw a posse of security guards at Gatwick Airport into a tizzy when six tins of Fray Bentos steak and kidney pies were found in my hand luggage. Guard No 1 was so perplexed that he sought a second opinion as to whether they were allowed on my flight back to Spain. A colleague was just as nonplussed. Along came a third, then a fourth. After a lengthy debate the general consensus was that the pies were OK, and I was sent on my way. Why would I want to bring pies into Spain? The answer ’s easy. Decades ago they were my favourite comfort food and I honestly thought that they had gone the way of brands like Worcestershire sauce-flavoured Twiglets, Bernard Matthews’ Turkey Twizzlers, Terry’s White Chocolate Oranges and Heinz baked beans pizza (yuck), to name but a few. When I make a business trip to the UK at the end of June I shall not bring back any more. Why? Because they are no longer what

Bye puddings and pies
STEAK AND KIDNEY PUDDINGS: Were once Britain’s favourite dish. they were back in the day. The tin may still say ‘steak and kidney’ but all it contains is a gooey brown gravy buried beneath a great lump of soggy pastry. Acid reflux in a can is what these abominations really are. I was reminded of those pies when a recent conversation in a bar veered over into retro British
recipes. Most of the people in the pub were of a certain vintage, to put it politely, and got all mistyeyed as they recalled jam roly-poly, coronation chicken, devilled kidneys, oxtail stew, toad-in-the-hole with onion gravy and bubble and squeak. My contribution was prawns with avocado, cheese fondues and
queen of puddings. Naturally! Which is probably why I discovered by my mid-fifties that I had developed a sizeable belly. Or a ‘balcony over the toy shop’ as the Australians so delicately put it. That’s when I hit the gym running, lost a massive amount of weight, and completely cut out all junk food. But, if I had the cash to open a
restaurant in Spain, I would revive all those old dishes because I reckon chubby expats and tourists would beat a path to my door to shovel down rum and honey babas, Arctic rolls, cheese and onion pies, brandy snaps, Bakewell tarts and steak and kidney puddings. Speaking of the latter, I learned that this particular dish was once Britain’s favourite dish. It dates back to 1861 and originally featured one ingredient not commonly seen today - oysters. These were once so plentiful they were more often eaten by the poor than the rich. Fray Bentos’s tinned version, introduced in the1970s, is still available today, but many Amazon customers are far from impressed. One wrote: ‘Absolute rubbish. I haven’t tasted anything more awful than this. Suet pastry so gluey, and the meat content abysmal. I have got a few left, but will leave for the food bank. At least there is something in the stomach for someone hungry.’ So rest assured I won’t be returning to Spain with a bunch of the things.

CREATING ORDER: Feng Shui balances and harmonises the energy in your home. WHAT do Richard Gere, the Beckhams, Ricky Martin, Eva Longoria and Oprah Winfrey all have in common? Well, unless you’ve been to their houses, you’d struggle to find a common theme that links these massively famous celebrities all together. You’d probably agree that the aforementioned stars appear to be happy, radiate success and live a peaceful and contented lifestyle. And, by visiting their homes, it would be apparent that their outward personality is a total reflection of the inside of their home. That could only mean one thing… they are all huge fans of Feng Shui, or the Chinese ancient art and science of
harmonising and balancing the energy of an interior space so that it brings positivity, health and wealth to the people inhabiting it. Below are some of the most important, yet basic principles of Feng Shui. Why don’t you try them out and see if they work? To create a good energy in the bedroom, the headboard of your bed should be positioned against the wall that is furthest away from the door. Never line up the bed with the door to the bedroom or bathroom. The headboard represents your security in life. It
should always be placed in front of a wall rather than a window, which would cause loss of security and energy. The kitchen itself should never be situated in the middle of the house. It should be close to the front door, although out of view from the entrance of the home. Avoid red and blue in the kitchen, as red represents fire and blue reduces appetite. The hallway marks the transition between the interior and exterior. Ensure that it is light and painted in your favourite colour. To the right of the front door, create a space to leave everything that you bring from the outside - bags, umbrella, keys etc.

SO the unsayable and the unthinkable have been said and thought. Pedro Sanchez has hinted that he isn’t ruling out another election. The Partido Popular and Ciudadanos should shoulder the responsibility of abstaining and ensuring Spain’s governability, he said. In fact we all know that they aren’t going to do that because politicians here and elsewhere (naming no names but the UK instantly comes to mind) no longer centre their efforts on governability. Spain needs a government and it needs one that can last four years and the PP, Cs will do everything to ensure that it does not. And that won’t be because they believe this benefits the population and its welfare but because it furthers their own personal agendas and ambitions.

The Podemos supremo should do everything possible to help Sanchez form a government but continues to hint that his 42 seats in the national parliament merit a ministry or two. DEAR Editor, For those of you that do not know, the leader of the Liberal Democrats is a man called Sir Vince Cable. This man has been the leader of this political party for over two years and during that time I do not think I have heard him speak once. I have not seen him in the newspapers, heard him on radio or television, nothing, nada, zip, zero. And yet, as he has resigned and finishes his term, his party is having its best run, ever. And they have achieved this without saying much at all. So maybe this should be a lesson for any aspiring politician and indeed our current lot of motor mouths should perhaps heed this ethos. Being well served WHEN we first came to the Costa Blanca to explore where we wanted to live, we stayed in Denia. Now, although it was February, it was warm enough to eat outside and we duly ordered off the menu, not realising that there was a ‘menu del dia’ for €10. We got talking to some lovely Spanish people on the next table and I was amazed at both the quality of food that they were served and the price; €10 for all that, why that was roughly the price of a chippy supper! They had a starter of a lovely fresh salad and then a magnificent cauldron of what I now know to be Arroz al Horno. Life’s a beach I HAVE to take my hat off to the council and beach workers in Fuengirola, Malaga. This morning I was walking my dog along the promenade at 7am and it was a hive of industrial activity. There were vehicles moving and flattening the sand, council workers picking up and clearing litter and laying walkways, bins were being emptied, beach hut staff were sorting beds and cleaning pathways. It just seemed kind of ironic that so much physical preparation was being made so that members of the public could sit back and relax. Millie Herbert

The least said….. Right on track MY wife and I recently travelled from Xeraco, just north of Gandia for a couple of nights in Valencia. We parked for nothing in the station car park, the station ticket lady was charming, the tickets were only just over €8 for the two of us, for a journey of just over an hour. The train was on time, it was clean, even the loos were useable and there were security guards on board for part of the journey. We arrived in Valencia relaxed, but then compared this journey to British trains (BR sandwiches, not getting a seat, toilets that were disgusting etc). Indeed, a couple of

FINES of thousands of euros handed down to three feminist protesters under Spain’s so-called ‘gag law’ once again throw a spotlight on restrictions on demonstrations. The women face paying up to €2,000 for breaking the Law for the Protection of Citizen Security, the gag law’s official name, following International Women’s Day marches on March 8. The then conservative Partido Popular (PP) government argued it would help keep protesters safer during demonstrations by curbing violence when the law was passed in 2015. But opposition parties, including the now-ruling Partido Socialista (PSOE), activists and NGOs claimed it granted sweeping powers to police to target protests. The law stops activists preventing evictions, taking ‘unauthorised’ pictures of police officers and restricts protests outside the Congress of Deputies and Senate buildings. The human rights NGO Amnesty International said in a report last year that the state had made at least €25 million from fines since the law was introduced. Fines range from €100 to €600,000 for the most serious offences. Amnesty International claimed the law has been used to target journalists and legitimate protests. PSOE pledged to reform the law after taking power last year but it remains largely untouched. PSOE previously claimed the law represented a return to a ‘police state.’ Pressure should be piled on them now they look set to stay in government to repeal it.

happened to you that day in a positive way. Those things you were happy about, things or people that made you smile. And by doing so, be thankful for it all. When you do this daily you will place your brain in a thankful positive mode and start loving yourself more and more. A very good method of how to love yourself more is living in the now. In the absence of risk factors, an electrocardiogram would be enough; however, if the specialist detects arrhythmias, murmurs, high blood pressure or other problems, he or she may recommend something more targeted. Searching for blood hidden in the stool is also essential as a preventive measure against colon cancer. And after 50, a colonoscopy is recommended every two years if there is a family history of the disease. Taking blood pressure readings and blood tests will provide information about cholesterol, triglycerides, glucose and urea.” The most common illnesses people suffer after 50 are high blood pressure, type-2 diabetes, alterations in lipid levels (high cholesterol and/or triglycerides), degenerative osteoarticular diseases (arthrosis, arthritis, spinal pathologies and degenerative traumatological conditions in general), and unfortunately, tumours. IN the White Mountains of California there exists a 5,000year-old bristlecone pine. It is the oldest living organism on Earth and led to the discovery of telomerease and a Nobel Prize award for Elizabeth Blackburn in 2009. Telomerease is a little (enzyme) guy running around the bodies of living organisms. It protects DNA by rebuilding telomeres, protective caps at the end of chromosomes which function a lot like caps on a shoelace. Humans have telomerase, though not as abundantly as the bristlecone pine of California. The key to longevity, and what’s more vitality into later life, is for telomerase to keep rebuilding your telomeres. Without telomerase DNA can get damaged. If DNA becomes damaged eventually the cell will die and we are but the sum of our parts. How much telomerase floats around our cells is significantly affected by what we eat. Song and dance STUDIO32 the theatre group based in the Benijofar area has just completed a highly successful run of the Cole Porter musical Anything Goes. Since forming in 2013, the group has performed at the Cardinal Belluga Theatre in San Fulgencio and each show raises funds for different charities, with the total distributed so far, in excess of €30,000. Anything Goes is based on a story book by Guy Bolton and P G Wodehouse and is set in the early 1930s aboard the ocean liner SS American.
Enthusiastic audiences enjoyed the performances of all of those taking part with a combination of well-seasoned members of the group and some newcomers to leading roles. The next presentation by STUDIO32 will be The Dracula Spectacula, a spooky musical subtitled ‘Fangs ain’t what they used to be’ which will take place at the same venue on dates to be announced in November. Dance spectacular THE Totally Dance Studios held their Movie Night show recently in La Casa de Cultura Benijofar to a packed and enthusiastic audience. Dancers from the age of two to 22 became part of a number of different groups (depending on age and experience) and each performed a range of dances to songs and music from famous films. The show was in aid of the Benijofar Social Fund for Families and raised more than €200 to help those in need. The studio originally held classes in Benijofar, but has now expanded to train young people in the art of dance in San Miguel and Cabo Roig. Conquistadors and climate change RESEARCHERS from a British university have claimed that plummeting winter temperatures from the end of the medieval era to the mid-19th century were caused by Spain’s conquest of the Americas. The University College London (UCL) team’s study claimed that temperatures dropped in the years after the Spanish arrived in the Americas. They published their findings in the Quarterly Spanish Review. The academics claimed this was because vegetation returned to what were once indigenous villages and farms, absorbing more carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and pulling global temperatures down. UCL’s Mark Maslin said the amount of native people who died following the arrival of the Spanish was so high that

MARC MARQUEZ has extended his lead in the MotoGP rankings after teammate Jorge Lorenzo crashed, taking out a slew of top riders on lap two in Barcelona. Lorenzo had made a blistering start, moving up from 10th on the grid to fourth. But he came in too hot on turn 10 as he tried to overtake Maveric Viñales while Marquez made a move on race leader and main championship challenger Andrea Dovizioso. Lorenzo ended up taking out Dovizioso with Viñales also falling after being left nowhere to go. Valentino Rossi became another victim of the crash when he ran wide after braking late and TOYOTA GAZOO Racing won the 87th Le Mans 24 Hours with a one-two finish but their cars could be said to have finished in the wrong order. In a dramatic final hour Sébastien Buemi, Kazuki Nakajima and Fernando Alonso, in the #8 TS050 Hybrid, defended their Le Mans crown and secured the drivers’ World Championship in the process, but only because of a huge slice of luck. They ended up winning by 16.9 seconds from teammates Mike Conway, Kamui Kobayashi and José María López in the #7 after the latter had to pit for a puncture. Unfortunately, their crew changed the wrong wheel in a blunder that robbed them of victory when they had to pit again to get the correct wheel changed. Honda say a sensor malfunc-

As the final hours approached, the gap remained relatively stable around two minutes and the focus switched to bringing the cars home safely. All appeared to be going to plan until the #7 experienced its dramas and Kazuki took the lead with less than an hour to go.
