SITE: Malaga port will be the location for the new refugee housing.
New migrant centre to open A NEW centre to deal with migrants entering Malaga port is due to open in July. The port of Malaga will be home to a new Foreigner Temporary Assistance Centre (CATE) to help care for the ever growing number of migrants entering Spain. Once picked up by the authorities, they will be treated by the Red Cross for any injuries then taken to the new centre where they will remain for a mamimum of 72 hours until their documentation or origin has been established. The centre aims to help the lack of facilities in the city for migrants rescued, which has reached its highest figures in the past year.
RESIDENTS of the Costa del Sol and Costa Tropical are being warned about an organised gang targeting and breaking into rural homes after up to 14 homes are believed to have been broken into over the weekend. The group appears to be known to police and reportedly come from the Granada area but strikes at detached homes on the coast. According to one family’s CCTV, the gang uses gas to ‘knock out’ residents and whilst they are unconscious they break into the property
Social services boost VELEZ-MALAGA will benefit from a large investment into its social service sector and disadvantaged areas. An investment totalling €1.8 million will be injected into the municipality with the aim of improving education, facilities and tutoring for those most at risk of social exclusion. The investment follows a collaboration between Community Social Services, the Velez Malaga City Council and the Junta de Andalucia with the majority of the cash invested by the Junta. The Andalucian board brought to the table €1.4 million to enable the project to go ahead. The rest of the balance was invested by the City Council.
As part of the project, 10 social workers and tutors will be introduced to the area. They will be specifically trained to deal with the town’s disadvantaged citizens, and work towards ensuring residents will be included in specific initiatives throughout the town and enable the most vulnerable to have access to public resources. Other areas the project will cover include assistance and advice on housing, education, employment, available social services and health. There will also be schemes in place at local schools which will help under privileged children through multi-cultural schemes and social care.

Missing girl A GIRL and her mother have been found by police after being missing for several weeks. The pair have been on the run since the girl was reported absent from school. She blamed fear from an ex-husband taking the child.

Assault on mother A MAN has been arrested in Malaga City after allegedly assaulting his mother when she refused to give him €20. The incident occurred at around 2am on June 12 when the man, who has been identified as of Paraguayan origin, arrived at the home of his mother on Calle Héroe de Sostoa. According to reports he arrived in a drunken state and demanded the money from his mother. When she refused, the man is said to have become increasingly violent and struck the woman. This prompted her to take refuge in a bedroom and phone the authorities. The detained reportedly used force to try to open the bedroom door, causing cuts and bruises to his hands and elbows. The Local Police arrived quickly and apprehended him. He was taken to a medical centre to see to his wounds and then taken into police custody. The mother was also taken for checks and given support in filing a complaint.

Air show SKY divers of the Spanish Air Force have been confirmed for next month’s air show in Torre del Mar. The air show, which has become an extremely popular annual event will be held this year from July 12 to 14.

THIRD TIME: Trinidad Herrera takes her seat as mayor of Almuñecar. POPULOUS PARTY candidate Trinidad Herrera was re-elected mayor of Almuñecar for the third time in recent local elections. She counted on votes from other parties Ciudadanos and Mas Almuñecar and now in power again, she will form a coalition government of the city. She also has support from Adelante Andalucia and Izquierda Unida giving her an overwhelming majority. Once she takes office as mayor she will liaise with delegates from all the parties to ensure that Almuñecar is governed by all the policies that are right for the people. Herrera said: “We have not been perfect
but the dialogue has been present with all the groups and administrations. The scenario we had after the 26M is more complex than four years ago, but far from being an obstacle, is something positive. We all must row towards the citizenship that will bring us progress and employment.” The session was presided over by the acting mayor, Juan Carlos Benavides (CA), to whom the municipal secretary, Anaïs Ruiz Serrano, took a promise or oath. A 38-YEAR-OLD Almuñecar resident has been arrested for allegedly driving an articulated vehicle whilst under the influence of alcohol. When the man was stopped he was reportedly found to have nearly 0.91mg per 1mg of air expelled, nearly six times over the national legal limit. The driver was apprehended as he was driving on the Autovía del Sur A-4 (Madrid-Cádiz), passing through Ciudad Real. Officers stopped the vehicle at 3.25pm last Saturday after he was observed to be driving erratically at around km 231. He was
questioned and alcohol tested and his sample proved to be enough to incriminate the man for driving a motor vehicle with an alcohol level exceeding the legal limit, according to sources. The arrest comes as part of a larger national campaign by the Guardia Civil traffic department to combat the amount of drivers operating with high levels of drugs and alcohol in their systems. The case has been referred to the Court of Instruction of Guardia de Valdepeñas where the man will face charges of driving under the influence of alcohol.

Fiery fiesta THIS picture of Spanish men jumping over a bonfire comes as thousands prepare to do the same in one of the country’s biggest fiestas this Sunday. Jumping over bonfires at midnight is one of the many traditions of the Noche de San Juan fiesta (Saint John’s Eve). The festival closely coincides with midsummer celebrations held elsewhere in Europe and the world and also comes days after the Summer Solstice. San Juan evolved out of celebrations which traditionally took place the night before Saint John’s feast day.
John the Baptist, the cousin of Jesus Christ who baptised him at the beginning of his ministry as a rabbi, was born on June 24 according to Christian teachings. The way San Juan is celebrated throughout Spain varies from place to place. A common feature in Spain and across the world is the lighting of bonfires. The Spanish tend to light their fires on beaches, though they are also lit in some places inland including in Madrid.

The bonfires are one of three traditional elements of the fiesta, with their symbolism and significance traceable to pre-Christian pagan religions. Midnight sees fiesta goers run into the sea, which has its origin in water being seen as purifying and as working best with medicinal plants, another traditional element. Those celebrating then jump over the fires either for good luck or to make a wish, depending on the area. Fires were believed to ward off evil spirits in pagan cultures.

A GROUP of suspected criminals has been tracked down and arrested after details emerged of a highly planned and efficient burglary scheme taking place along the Malaga coastline. The six men and one woman, aged between 30 and 52 years old and of Bulgarian nationality have been apprehended after a lengthy investigation by the authorities. The scheme involved the criminals carefully breaking into vehicles as they were parked at popular tourist attractions and beach areas. They would steal any house keys that they found and using the address on the documentation they would visit the victims’ homes whilst they were absent for the day. In many cases the keys would be returned to the car and the house left immaculate which made the investigations very difficult. A raid on a Marbella residence led to the arrests where there was also a stock of stolen artefacts, money and marihuana.
SOCIALIST Moreno Ferrer has been elected as the new mayor of Velez-Malaga. A ceremony took place on Saturday (June 15) morning where he was sworn into his position. Ferrer will take his seat supported by seven councillors of the PSOE and the seven of the GIPMT. During his induction ceremony he applauded the councillors that he was replacing, and in particular “towards the comrades of all the parties with whom I have worked in recent years.” The mayor of Vélez-Málaga made it very clear that his commitment has always been based on ‘defending the general interests of the city.’ “The main hallmark of Vélez-Málaga should be that of a progressive and supportive city, where no town or neighbourhood feels discriminated and where young people are encouraged to feel proud of their land and also protagonists,” Ferrer explained.

A LENGTHY police chase between La Viñuela and VélezMálaga took place on Monday afternoon (June 17). The chase lasted 12 kilometres as the driver, a 30-year-old resident of Velez-Malaga, sped away from officers after an apparent argument with his girlfriend. Trafficking warehouse POLICE have dismantled a marihuana trafficking ring after a warehouse was raided in the capital of VélezMálaga. National Police officers raided a warehouse containing more than 80 kilos of marihuana. Tw o t o n n e s o f hashish has also been recovered in a rented property in Marbella linked to the warehouse raid. The 80 kilos of the drug was in a lorry reportedly ready to be exported to the French and Belgium markets. The driver has been arrested and is said to have a history of cocaine smuggling. Three other men of French and Belgium nationality have also been arrested in connection to the large scale ring. According to pol i c e s o u rc e s , t h e o r ganisation is known to officials and has been described as ‘meticulous in its operation.’ The group allegedl y re n t e d p ro p e r t i e s along the coast in which to hide the drugs before moving it to the warehouse for shipment. Only select members of the organisation knew of the whereabouts of the drugs to minimise risk of exposure. It is believed the drivers of the vehicles also were not aware of the final destination of the cargo and the planned stops along the route and the timetable for the runs was also specifically designed to be random so as not to alert suspicion.

Mayoral delegations THE Municipal Government has released its community delegations for the leadership of the city. The mayor of Vélez-Málaga, Antonio Moreno Ferrer, and the first deputy mayor, Jesús Pérez Atencia, made the announcements at a meeting on Tuesday morning (June 18). The government team will be made up of 14 councillors of the PSOE and the GIPMTM, with the socialist Antonio Moreno Ferrer at the head. As part of the delegations, Jesus Perez Atencia will be the first deputy mayor and will continue to head the Municipality of Torre del Mar and the Tourism and Beach areas. Both Moreno Ferrer and Pérez Atencia insisted that the distribution of work has been done “prioritising a balanced management of the entire municipality and a reinforcement and greater coordination of municipal services.”
Man ‘lynched’ after car attack A 35-YEAR-OLD man has been the victim of a lynching after allegedly attacking another man during an apparent road rage incident. The incident happened at the port of Caleta de Velez where a man reportedly got out of his vehicle and for unknown reasons, stuck a fellow motorist with a car jack to the head, leaving him with head injuries. He then apparently fled the scene but with a group of at least four people armed with sticks and iron bars running after him. After apprehending the man they are said to have beaten him, forcing the man to escape by jumping into the water close to the harbour edge. He was rescued by Maritime rescue and taken to hospital, as was the original victim.

A RECENTLY released report has found the Malaga Council collected a daily average of 62 tonnes of packaging, paper and glass in 2018. The Diputación de Málaga, through the Provincial Consortium of Urban Solid Waste (RSU), released a breakdown of types of waste collected in the region. Some 22,725 tons of light packaging,

and cardboard and 6,903 tonnes of glass. It also showed that in the collection of waste, the organisation has 2,464 rear cargo containers, 657 top cargo containers and 1,119 lateral cargo containers.

A total of 301,002 tonnes of Municipal Household Waste (MSW) from the household collection grey bins was also recorded at the treatment centre of Valsequillo (Antequera). The Diputación de Málaga is currently investing €600,000 into four new removal lorries which will bolster the existing fleet of 37 collection lorries.
Biker seriously hurt A MOPED rider was seriously injured in an accident on the CN 340 near Almuñecar. He was admitted to hospital with a severe open leg fracture after a collision with another vehicle in the Carretera Nacional 340, in the El Mirador area. The accident happened at around 3pm when the moped collided with an Audi as he was travelling towards Herradura. The driver of the car has been reported to be around 60 years old and has so far not yet been named, but is believed to be a resi-

The operators of the 061 team transferred the man to the Regional Hospital of Motril for treatment. While authorities dealt with the injured man and cleared the damaged vehicles, traffic was diverted through the urbanisation of Cotobro and the El Montañés for around an hour. Guardia Civil officers are investigating the cause of the accident.

Job losses at golf course THE Baviera Golf Resort in Velez-Malaga has been forced to dismiss 10 of its staff after the parent company which owns the resort went into administration. The golf resort has reduced its opening hours to Monday to Friday in order to appease the liquidators. It will remain closed on weekends until a suitable investor steps in to rescue the course. The closure on weekends led to the company dismissing 10 out of their 17 employees last Saturday (June 15), which

Privacy breached A WOMAN using a toilet in the offices of the company where she worked in Malaga City was reportedly horrified to see a hand holding a mobile phone appear over the cubicle. On exiting the stall she caught sight of a young man who, on being seen, immediatel y r a n o ff b u t s h e recognised him as someone who worked in the same building. She made a complaint to officers from the National Police who attended the b u i l d i n g a n d i n t e rviewed the person that she had identified. A 2 3 - y e a r- o l d m a n has now been arrested accused of illegally filming the woman and his mobile phone has been confiscated as potential evidence.

Volcano museum popular VISITORS flock from around the world to see the Iberian peninsula’s only publicly accessed volcano. The volcano museum Cerro Gordo de Granátula de Calatrava has received nearly 30,000 visitors in the past three years, bringing a fantastic income to the Castilla la Mancha area. The popular tourist attraction attracts around 10,000 visitors per year who come from all over the world to see the geological wonder. The mayor of Granátula, Félix Herrera is pleased with the progress that the tourist attraction has made. “This tourist resource has managed to attract a varied and considerable public to the town, it has also become a place they visit as a group or as a family, many people with disabilities visit the museum as it is prepared so this group can touch, see and experience its interior.”

First wheelchair L A Z A R O, a tw o -m onth-old c alf in n o rth e r n S p a in u n able to s tand or walk, was saved by a shelter who built a ‘wheelchair’ allowing him a better quality of life. Lazaro, born in a livestock farm in O Grove suffered hypoxia, a lack of oxygen to the brain, during childbirth. I n é s Tr illo , c o - founde r of the Vacaloura Animal Sanctuary, a shelter for farm animals in Santiago de Compostela, became aware of Lazaro’s case
via public television. Trillo said: “The shelter will give him a decent life where he is not to be sentenced to death because of his disability.” Trillo and the team at Vacaloura devised a metal framed and harnessed wheelchair, the first of its kind in Spain to allow Lazaro to move comfortably. The Vacaloura Animal Sanctuary guarantee Lazaro will be taken care of until he dies a natural death.
A SAFE sex campaign was launched last week in response to sky-rocketing STI rates. Videos and ads have been posted on social networks aiming to reach 14to 29-year-olds. The campaign is a shock measure responding to the Wo r l d H e a l t h O rg a n i s a t i o n ’s ( W H O ) c o n c e r n a t the lack of progress curbing the increase of STIs. A report released by the ministry of health found in 2017 almost 24,000 cases
of gonorrhoea, syphilis and chlamydia were reported in Spain. According to the ministry, cases of gonorrhea have risen 26 per cent annually between 2013 and 2017 and in 2017 syphilis reached its highest peak number of cases since records began. Health Minister Maria Luisa Carcedo told reporters: “The use of condoms has dropped among 15 to 18-year-olds over the last few years.”
Toddler in pool tragedy A 19-MONTH-OLD toddler has died a week after falling into a swimming pool in Spain. The accident took place a fortnight ago in Salceda de Caselas (Pontevedra). The child’s family pulled the youngster out and alerted emergency services. Medics performed artificial resuscitation and the victim was taken to hospital by helicopter in a critical condition. However, the toddler never recovered.

THE WEEK IN POLITICS THE path to power for Spain’s acting prime minister is becoming clearer, but work still continues to build a workable majority following April’s snap general election. Pedro Sanchez looks set to face an investiture vote, a ballot of Congress of Deputies members on his taking office as prime minister, in early July. Sanchez and his left-leaning Partido Socialista (PSOE) will formally take power if the investiture vote goes smoothly. The path to power was initially hard due to arithmetic in the Congress of Deputies. PSOE won 123 seats following April’s election, well ahead of the second largest party, the conservative Partido Popular (PP), but more than 50 seats short of a majority. If he fails to win an absolute majority then a second vote is held where only a simple majority, more yeses than nos, is needed. Cataluyna (ERC), have already said they will abstain meaning Sanchez will not need as much support. A loss in the second vote would trigger another general election as Spain would be left without an effective government. Acting Deputy Prime Minister Carmen Calvo said another election is not going to happen because voters had already given PSOE a mandate. She called on other parties to back Sanchez’s bid to become prime minister. Pablo Casado and Albert Rivera, leaders of the PP and centrist Ciudadanos respectively, have both said they will vote against Sanchez. But recent polls of their parties’ members show a majority would rather they abstain, perhaps showing voters want a stable government more than continued deadlock.
Mayors sworn in MAYORS across Spain officially took up their posts on Saturday following last month’s local elections. Control of Madrid City Council, previously governed by a leftist coalition led by Manuela Carmena, has now passed to rightwing parties. The conservative Partido Popular’s (PP) Jose Luis MartinezAlmeida is the new mayor of Spain’s capital. He heads a rightwing coalition which includes the centrist Ciudadanos and far-right Vox. Barcelona mayor Ada Colau, of the leftist Barcelona en Comu, narrowly clung on in city hall after the left-leaning Partido Socialista (PSOE) and Ciudadanos backed her. Joan Ribo also stays on as mayor of Valencia with the regionalist Compromis and with PSOE’s support. Juan Mari Aburto, of the Partido Nacionalista Vasco (PNV), is staying on for his second term in Bilbao with the backing of the Basque branch of PSOE. PSOE’s Juan Espadas has managed to stay on as mayor of Sevilla and will run the council with a minority administration. Adelante’s Jose Maria Gonzalez will stay on as Cadiz’s mayor and govern with an absolute majority.

Organ donation Living in Spain can bring with it an array of issues which may not have been encountered when living in the UK. There are lots of things to consider, and we are here to help try to make the transition and life in Spain a little easier by compiling a series of helpful facts and figures relating to a variety of topics. AS of 2010, Spain has operated an ‘opt-out’ (or presumed consent) system for deceased organ donation. This addresses the rate or refusal of potential donors or their families in giving permission for the use of organs. The rate of family refusal in Spain is 13 per cent, compared to 37 per cent in England (according to the National Transplant Organisation figures - ONT).

A HEN party turned a flight from Birmingham to Alicante into rowdy chaos as they danced up the aisle. Fellow passengers on the Ryanair service had no choice but to grin and bear it as members of the group charged up and down the plane screaming and shouting as their holiday party started early. One of the passengers, Robert Malton, who was flying to Spain to celebrate his fifth anniversary and visit his two-year-old
grandson, captured the incident on video. Speaking to UK news portal Star online he said it was the noisiest flight he had ever been on, claiming the women appeared to be the worse for drink. He added that they were very loud and kept changing their seats, causing a nuisance to other passengers. He said: “Things got worse as the flight went on and as per the video you can see just how raucous things got.”
According to the ONT, Brits living in Spain are more likely to donate their organs than their countrymen back home. It’s not necessary to have a donor card. What is important is to let family members and loved ones know your wishes in terms of organ donation. Figures published by the Spanish ONT in 2017 put the country as world leader in donation and transplants, reaching a new record with 46.9 donors per million people and 5.261 transplants. Spain has been a global leader in organ donation and transplantation for the past 26 years. Broken down by organ, there were 3,269 kidney surgeries (up 9 per cent on 2016), 1,247 liver transplants (up 8 per cent), 304 heart procedures (8 per cent rise), 363 lung surgeries (up 18 per cent), 70 pancreas transplants (down 4 per cent) and eight bowel surgical procedures (up 100 per cent). According to the National Transplant Organisation (ONT), these surgeries are equivalent to six donors and 14 surgical procedures a day. In addition, Spain saw a new record in bone marrow donation last year, with 78,291 new donors and an increase of 196 per cent over the previous year. At this rate, the country could reach its target of 400,000 bone marrow donors well before the mid-2020 goal. In Spain the number of those on the waiting list was reduced to 4,896 in 2017, from 5,480, although the number of children waiting for organs increased to 74, from 48 a year earlier. Lung and heart are viable for four-six hours after death, liver and pancreas 24 hours, kidney 72 hours, corneas 14 days, bone and skin five years, and heart valves up to 10 years. Small intestines, veins, tendons and ligaments can also be donated. A single organ donor can save up to eight people and a single tissue donor may enhance the lives of up to 50 people. Online hate action call INTERNET providers are getting together with pressure groups and government in a bid to tackle online hate speech. This is according to the Secretary of State for Justice, Manuel Jesús Dolz, speaking at a conference on the issue. Dolz said that there are many institutions both in Spain and in the EU looking at ways of confronting the problem due to the seriousness of the issue and the need to protect victims of hate speech. With regard to Spain, the Secretary of State
said that “a framework agreement is being worked out between public institutions, civil society and Internet service providers to make progress on specific measures to tackle online hate speech.” As for the EU, the European justice ministers of the Vendôme Group exchanged views at a meeting they held in Madrid at the Ministry of Justice on June 3. Dolz called for improved coordination between public bodies to pursue perpetrators through the criminal courts in order to protect victims.
Medical students jailed A COURT in Marrakesh has sentenced six people to terms of three months to two and half years in prison for having performed illegal abortions using pills that were purchased in Spain. The drug involved, Arthrote is only available on prescription and is used to treat arthritis or rheumatism but has a side effect which can cause contractions leading to spontaneous abortions. Those involved in the case included three medical students and the person who brought the pills into the Country and the students were all
banned from completing their studies to become doctors. It is estimated that although abortion is illegal in Morocco between 600 and 800 illegal attempts take place every day in that country, most of which are undertaken in very unsafe conditions. Currently the only time that abortion is allowed is when the mother’s life is in danger, but a new law is being considered which could allow termination in the case of rape, incest or serious medical problems with the foetus.

BREXIT BRIEF No-deal impact UP to 0.9 per cent could be knocked off Spanish Gross Domestic Product (GDP) in the event of a ‘disorderly’ no-deal Brexit, according to new estimates from economists. Spain’s General Council of Economists (CGE) said both Spain and Portugal would feel the impact of Brexit regardless of how it happens. The researchers, who presented their findings at the eighth annual Iberian Seminar of Economists, said the tourism industry would be one sector that would feel the most impact. British holidaymakers account for around 23 per cent of Spain’s total, according to Tourism Board figures. Others are likely to face financial instability and disruptions in their supply chains, the economists added. Imports and exports including those of cars, food and drink would be affected, with Britain currently Spain’s fifth-largest trading partner at around 7 per cent of total trade. The economists said Spain was also more exposed to potential trade fallout than other EU countries including France and Italy. Telecommunications, transport, business services and financial services including banking would also be hit, according to the forecasts. Spain faces having an estimated 0.5 per cent shaved off its GDP total even if a no-deal Brexit is orderly.

Student stabs biology teacher A THIRD-YEAR student in Valencia stabbed his biology teacher as 2017-2018 data shows 13 per cent increase in assaults on teachers in Spain. The assailant, at the Institute of Secondary Education (ESO) la Misericordia, became enraged as the teacher gave out grades for the second trimester, took a knife from his backpack and attacked his teacher’s shoulder and arm. Classmates pushed tables and threw chairs to stop the minor who had never previously demonstrated aggressive behaviors. Afterwards, the attacker hid on the roof of the school, and the teacher was transferred to the General Hospital of Valencia. The police reported that the minor did not resist arrest. has now been discharged from hospital. The 2017-2018 data from the Union Teacher’s Advo-

Fewer unsold new properties DESPITE the fact that there seems to be an ever increasing amount of new building, the Ministry of Development has revealed that there were nearly half a million empty new properties across Spain in 2018. For nine years running more new houses have been sold than were built, but it means that the building industry is still suffering from the problems which arose during the financial crisis which has re-
sulted in just under 460,000 new properties still remaining unsold and this figure does not take into account older properties which are on the market as well. The good news for builders is that this apparent blight of unsold properties is steadily declining and is some 30 per cent lower than it was at the height of the crisis which means that new builds are still attracting investors with an eye for the future.
Brawl erupts on UK flight AN easyJet flight from Spain’s Gran Canaria to London Gatwick had to turn round after a brawl erupted on board. Spanish Air Traffic Control tweeted: ‘Flight from Gran Canaria to London returned to the airport because of a disruptive passenger on board who apparently assaulted an-
other. The crew requested a police presence when it arrived.’ The nationalities of those involved has not been disclosed. An easyJet spokesman said: “Our cabin and ground crew are trained to assess all situations and to act quickly and appropriately to ensure that
the safety of the flight and other passengers is not compromised at any time. “Whilst such incidents are rare, we take them very seriously and do not tolerate abusive or threatening behaviour onboard. “The safety and well-being of passengers and crew is always our highest priority.”

A MADRID judge acquitted the doctor held responsible for the death of Samba Martine in December 2011. It would have been unfair to convict him, the judge said, for the omissions of other d o c t o r s o r n u rs e s and ‘bureaucratic deficiencies.’ The C o n g o l e se wo ma n was transferred from Melilla to the Aluche (Madrid) immigrants’ internment on November 12, 2011. Martine had been tested for HIV and was considered to be in good health when the Melilla authorities authorised her transfer. That sa m e d a y sh e w as prescribed medication for flu-like symptoms and itch-
ing in the perianal zone but once in Madrid, these worsened and she was seen by th e a c c u s ed p rima ry ca re doctor. He attended Martine until November 30, after which s h e w a s trea te d o n s eve n mo re o c c a s io n s b y o th e r doctors and nurses. On December 19 she was finally admitted to hospital where she died seven hours later. S h e d ie d o f s y s temic c ry p to co cc o s is , a fu n ga l disease that would have rec e iv ed mo re ap p ro p ria te treatment had doctors been aware that Martine was HIV positive, but these results did not arrive until November 2012, the judge said.

Doctor cleared in death of immigrant ILLEGAL TRADE: Spanish police are cracking down on the export of elvers.
Landmark case THE first smuggling conviction of its kind marks a change in policies in the export of elvers, a term given to the juvenile stage of an eel’s life where they are sometimes known as ‘Glass Eels.’ The export and distribution of these eels outside of Spain has been prohibited since 2010 when the species was classed as endangered. However the export of these eels is still a major underground movement in Spain, with the majority of shipments heading for the Asian market.
“It’s the European ivory,” sums up Lieutenant José Antonio Alfaro. Environmental organisation Seprona have been actively working on the situation since 2011, however the issue is a complex one with the main way of exporting the eels involving the falsifying of documents, claiming the items are a different, legal, species of eel. However during operations during the past decade, Seprona has carried out five major operations, seizing over eight tonnes of eels in total. These have recently led to a total of €1.5 million in fines for the companies involved.

Increase in Italian workers A RECENT report compiled by data from the Ministry of Labour has revealed that the number of Italian workers has increased by 71 per cent over the past 10 years. The study, taking data from 2008, shows more than 46,000 Italian workers have come to Spain, with most concentrated around the Valencian Community, Cataluña, Madrid and Canary Islands. Romanian workers still hold the majority of foreign labour in the country, with 100,000 registered in Spain followed by Moroccan and Chinese immigrants. The British appear well down on the table. National Institute of Statistics (INE) data shows that only one in four British citizens arrive in Spain to work, the rest to retire.

Regulator to take on cartels
THE European Commission (EC) has approved plans for Spain’s Santander and Mapfre to create a new bancassurance company for vehicles and small firms. The EC said the firms would be allowed to join together for the deal after finding it would not pose problems to the European Economic Area. The link between the two firms would have a limited impact on the Spanish market meaning competition problems were not likely, the EC added. It comes after the two companies agreed to launch the service in January.

Madrid leads in growth forecast THE Madrid Region is forecast to have the highest rate of economic growth in Gross Domestic Product (GDP) terms this year, according to a new study. The Foundation of Savings Banks’ (Funcas) report on regional growth forecast that the economy of the region would grow by 2.8 per cent this year. Cantabria is expected to have the second highest with 2.6 per cent, followed by Navarra with 2.5, Castilla-La Mancha with 2.4 and Galicia, 2.3. Andalucia is expected to grow by

The Spanish rate of GDP growth is predicted to be 2.2 per cent this year, according to government figures quoted in the report. The data comes as National Institute of Statistics (INE) figures from
last year also forecast high growth rates in Madrid and Cantabria. Funcas’ new study took those forecasts into account as well as data collected at the end of 2018 when growth data for Spain was revised down. The Foundation said Madrid, Navarra and the Basque Country’s growth could see sharper slowdowns than Spain has experienced overall. It comes as officials and economists continue to expect lower GDP growth for this year than earlier predictions due to global economic uncertainty caused by Brexit and USChina-EU trade war.
A TOTAL of 753,000 working days were lost due to worker absences in 2018, the highest number on record, costing Spanish companies an estimated €6.9 billion a new report showed. Adecco’s report found 2018’s absence rate stood at 5.3 per cent. The figure, which refers to the percentage of hours missed in a work day, tops the previous record set in 2009 of 5.2 per cent. The rise was driven by an increase in illnesses and out-ofwork accidents which numbered more than 5.2 million cases, the report found.

Decathlon sales fall SALES at the sports store chain Decathlon fell by 3 per cent to €1.5 billion in 2018, with net profits down 19 per cent year-onyear to €97 million. The company’s latest figures showed the falls came as Decathlon invested €35 million into its Spanish operation last year. Company CEO Javier Lopez said that investment and changes in stores were responsible for the decrease. It comes as the company plans to invest a further €41 million in Spain this year. Almost two-thirds of the funds are set to go towards its digitisation project which aims to speed up Decathlon’s delivery service.
Wage rise SPANISH government officials have reached an agreement with the CSIF public sector workers union to raise wages by 0.25 per cent next month on top of an increase linked to economic output (Gross Domestic Product, GDP).
Buying land SUPERMARKET chain Mercadona has bought six plots of land in the Parc Sagunt area of the Valencia Region for €16.6 million as part of plans to build a new logistics warehouse, adding 136,328 square metres to its current holdings there.
China woos Spanish companies A TOTAL of 50 Chinese investors and entrepreneurs travelled to Madrid last week to meet Spanish companies as Beijing continues to seek international backing for a global infrastructure project. The meeting involved more than 300 Spanish and Chinese companies. It comes as China tries to woo companies for its new Belt and Road initiative, a series of infrastructure programmes in
more than 152 countries. China is thought to be trying to win over Spanish companies because of the country’s economic ties to Latin America and North Africa. But some Spanish investors are wary. A KMPG report on the Chinese trip found weak institutions, an unfavourable business climate and the political structure of the East Asian country represented risk factors for Spanish companies.

LEAPY LEE SAYS IT OTHERS THINK IT I TRULY am becoming heartily peeved with people writing to remind me that I am ‘also an immigrant.’ Usually these informants are new readers and, although I am delighted to welcome them to my scribbles, it also means they have not read a number of my past columns in which I have more than covered this particular subject. So to all the wags who still think they are being clever, and occasionally quite nasty in their observations, I am completely aware that I am ‘also an immigrant.’ I am actually quite a proud immigrant. Many years ago, due to personal reasons (well chronicled in my books), I left the UK and, after some years in the Middle East, moved to Spain where I have resided for the last 35 years. This country has been good to me. It has educated four of my children, two of which have married Spanish locals, and my knowledge of the language is moderately passable. I originally brought some £50,000 into the country (which in 1983 was no small sum!) and, through unfortunate timing and various business ventures, managed to lose most of it over the next two or three years. During my time here, I have integrated to the best of my ability, helped support the local tourist industry and earned myself a Spanish pension. Although politically minded, I have never seriously

I feel that as an immigrant I have two choices. Stay and accept all that my host country has to offer, or leave! Through it all, I have however remained a true
British patriot. I am proud of my heritage. Proud also of the fact that both my father and grandfather, laid their lives on the line with millions of others to preserve Britain’s freedom and democracy. I am also disgusted by the way the country of my birth is slowly being brought to its knees by
ungrateful foreign spongers, greedy billionaires and dubious immigrants, who take advantage of its hospitality and, under the guise of diversity, would destroy its culture altogether. I am constantly enraged by deceitful, self-serving politicians, who either have some ulterior motive or are naïve almost beyond belief. I am a staunch Brexiteer. I am firmly convinced that only by ridding ourselves of the yolk of Brussels will our misguided children learn to stand on their own two feet, respect their country and regain the pride and patriotism that inspired the youngsters of yore to fight, and die for what they believed in. One thing I do try to avoid - although it is sometimes difficult - is hypocrisy. I do always endeavour to practise what I preach. I have nothing against immigration. In fact I believe it can often be a good thing. Providing the visitors retain the same attitude and respect toward their host country as I maintain myself. Unfortunately the majority of aliens that are pouring into Europe at this time appear to have a different agenda altogether. I am fervently convinced that if our so called leaders don’t wake up soon it will all be too late. Sadly, I fear it already may be. Keep the faith. Love Leapy. Leapylee2002@gmail.com

Will a third of the world’s PCs simply stop in January, asks Terence Kennedy MY wife’s venerable laptop is under bombardment right now, and the perpetrator is Microsoft. The reason: she’s clinging onto the ‘obsolete’ Windows 7. Read their dire warnings and you could easily believe her computing world will implode when Windows 7 ‘expires’ a few months from now. It will be no more, cease to be, ex-Windows. That’s radical talk, given that a third of the world’s users still swear by what many believe was Microsoft’s best-ever operating s y s t e m . S u r e l y t h e y c a n ’t j u s t flick the switch on January 14? T h e y c a n ’t , a n d t h e y w o n ’t . What they will do is simply freeze Windows 7 in time from that date. No more patches, updates, bug fixes, security solutions. If that doesn’t bother you, you can indeed keep using it forever, or at least until the computer itself dies. At which stage you will be unable to activate it again on
CLOSING WINDOWS: Ceasing to be? another machine even if you’ve got handfuls of kosher serial numbers, tough luck. Microsoft has had a hard sell trying to move users to the allsinging, all-dancing Windows 10, the final number in the progression as 10 now just keeps getting updated and improved forever more. T h e y h a v e m a n a g e d t o p e rsuade 56 per cent of us to move t o Wi n d o w s 1 0 , a t t h e l a t e s t
count. But a stubborn 33 per cent swear by 7, and then there are the oddball diehards: 6 per cent on the dog’s dinner which was Windows 8, half a per cent still on the truly terrible Vista, and a luddite 1.6 per cent clinging on to the ancient XP for dear life. I n c l u d i n g B r i t a i n ’s g o o d o l d NHS, bless their cotton swabs. I n m a n y c a s e s y o u c a n ’t u p grade because your hardware simply won’t handle it.
If you remember Microsoft’s k i n d o ff e r o f a f r e e m i g r a t i o n from 7 to 10, that boat sailed a long time ago. Last time I looked it costs about a hundred smackers to make the move. Or for not much more you could buy a cheap computer with 10 pre-installed. The gloom and doom scenario for sticking with 7 is that if an unpatched vulnerability is found (at this late stage, really?), hackers will exploit it, and Microsoft won’t fix it. But your anti-virus program (you do have one, don’t you?) will keep updating to keep you safe, and many of your other apps like browsers, e-mail and office suite, can continue to be updated (‘patched’ in the jargon) in the usual way. So: like the famous Mark Twain quote, rumours of Windows 7’s death have been greatly exaggerated. Happy obsolescence.
IF you’re feeling besieged by Microsoft’s warnings, ask yourself how long you expect your computer to last. Most PCs pre-installed with Windows 7 will be between seven and 10 years old. That’s a pretty good run in an era when technology can have the life of a geriatric fruit-fly. Actually buying Windows 10 retail is pretty bad value, given that manufacturers of new computers pay Microsoft just a fraction of that price to pre-install it on their machines. There is another route. Join me in the shadows and I’ll tell you. You could take your chance buying an ‘OEM’ (factory-install) copy for €10 or up, openly on offer from plenty of absolutely legit sites like Amazon. I have, I did, and they worked. Mostly.

Is this the greatest medical discovery of all time? PETER PURVEY WHAT could possibly connect dolphins with the zebra fish, the common house mouse of today, and of course, ourselves? Hundreds of millions of years of evolution separate these species. Well, the Spanish have a phrase for it, ‘Enlace al otro,’ or, one thing leads to another, which could not be more appropriate in this case. Almost 20 years ago American geneticist Michael Zasloff was chatting to other scientists over a pint after giving a lecture at St Andrews University, in Fife, Scotland on antibiotics found in animal skin. One, a marine biologist happened to say that he was puzzled by the ability of dolphins to recover from horrendous bites from whales, sometimes as long as 45 cm and 12 cm deep with no sign of infection or scar tissue. Zasloff went back to his University but couldn’t get dolphins and their phenomenal ability to regenerate their cells out of his mind and in 2011 pub-

lished a paper on the ‘mysterious and remarkable wound healing process of the bottle-nosed dolphin.’ Soon after, he spoke to a fellow biologist, Kevin Strange about this and thus began a collaboration between them and Associate Professor Viravuth Yin that has resulted in the article in the April 2019 edition of ‘Scientific American’ on which this report is based. Some molecule or chemical has
been passed down faithfully through each species from generation to generation that allows cell regeneration, but what was it? Human beings have it in a limited capacity. The only organ in our bodies that has this ability is the liver, but what is preventing other organs the same facility? The outcome of many thousand hours of trial and error has revealed that a molecule known as MSI 1436
originally identified by Zasloff in a small shark and used to treat diabetes and obesity and, importantly, already with an FDA certificate for trial with humans, has found to be a catalyst for inducing cell regeneration. Regeneration is known across a whole range of animals: Zebra fish,
with internal organs much like ours, will grow a new tail, repair a damaged heart, kidneys, pancreas and appendages and the lamprey can repair a damaged spinal cord. It is not hard to appreciate the profound importance to our species if we, too could take advantage of this miracle molecule. Unfortunately, somewhere along the line of evolution we developed a molecule that prevented the regeneration signals from reaching the DNA. This may have occurred to prevent runaway cell reproduction which results in cancer. This has now been identified as an enzyme called PTP1B. Tests with zebra fish have proved that now it is possible to start the regrowth of heart muscle to replace the damage after a heart attack and restore the organ’s original blood pumping ability. Experiments on humans must begin soon and the world of medicine awaits the result with bated breath! I try to make my articles informative, interesting and at times give food for thought. I AM angry. Again. So angry I need to lie down in a dark room and let my heart rate stabilise a bit. Meanwhile, why not flick ahead to the crossword page or go and make that cup of coffee… Hey, me again. Apologies for the short break but pleased to report the heart rate’s just about stabilised. But why so angry? The reason is what I just read about the inquest into the London Bridge terror attack. How victims of the terrorists were left disastrously in the lurch by paramedics. Health and Safety legislation has undeniably saved many lives and prevented many serious injuries. But the underlying problem is the threat of lawsuits, the consequent blame culture and closing of ranks when an emergency service worker makes a genuine mistake whilst carrying out his job. Those criticised for their ‘H&S caution’ will be hamstrung by the innumerable protocols imposed by managers when they started work. In turn, these managers will have been fully apprised of their responsibility towards the organisation to cover its back and avoid running up huge costs from frivolous lawsuits or increased insurance premiums.

There is no mention of e-mail communication. The AGM is a very important meeting for owners. To notify it by e-mail does not give a reliable proof of service as owners can change their address and forget to notify the community. Owners may not have a way to print any documents. DEAR Editor, For those of you that do not know, the leader of the Liberal Democrats is a man called Sir Vince Cable. This man has been the leader of this political party for over two years and during that time I do not think I have heard him speak once. I have not seen him in the newspapers, heard him on radio or television, nothing, nada, zip, zero. And yet, as he has resigned and finishes his term, his party is having its best run, ever. And they have achieved this without saying much at all. So maybe this should be a lesson for any aspiring politician and indeed our current lot of motor mouths should perhaps heed this ethos. It would be far better if you just shut up. Andrew T Wright
Being well served WHEN we first came to the Costa Blanca to explore where we wanted to live, we stayed in Denia. Now, although it was February, it was warm enough to eat outside and we duly ordered off the menu, not realising that there was a ‘menu del dia’ for €10. We got talking to some lovely Spanish people on the next table and I was amazed at both the quality of food that they were served and the price; €10 for all that, why that was roughly the price of a chippy supper! They had a starter of a lovely fresh salad and then a magnificent cauldron of what I now know to be Arroz al Horno. I will remember the smell of that dish for a very long time and then they had dessert, as well. What a great concept ‘menu del dia’ is. I love them. Dave Starkey
Life’s a beach I HAVE to take my hat off to the council and beach workers in Fuengirola, Malaga. This morning I was walking my dog along the promenade at 7am and it was a hive of industrial activity. There were vehicles moving and flattening the sand, council workers picking up and clearing litter and laying walkways, bins were being emptied, beach hut staff were sorting beds and cleaning pathways. It just seemed kind of ironic that so much physical preparation was being made so that members of the public could sit back and relax. Millie Herbert

The least said….. Right on track MY wife and I recently travelled from Xeraco, just north of Gandia for a couple of nights in Valencia. We parked for nothing in the station car park, the station ticket lady was charming, the tickets were only just over €8 for the two of us, for a journey of just over an hour. The train was on time, it was clean, even the loos were useable and there were security guards on board for part of the journey. We arrived in Valencia relaxed, but then compared this journey to British trains (BR sandwiches, not getting a seat, toilets that were disgusting etc). Indeed, a couple of

FINES of thousands of euros handed down to three feminist protesters under Spain’s so-called ‘gag law’ once again throw a spotlight on restrictions on demonstrations. The women face paying up to €2,000 for breaking the Law for the Protection of Citizen Security, the gag law’s official name, following International Women’s Day marches on March 8. The then conservative Partido Popular (PP) government argued it would help keep protesters safer during demonstrations by curbing violence when the law was passed in 2015. But opposition parties, including the now-ruling Partido Socialista (PSOE), activists and NGOs claimed it granted sweeping powers to police to target protests. The law stops activists preventing evictions, taking ‘unauthorised’ pictures of police officers and restricts protests outside the Congress of Deputies and Senate buildings. The human rights NGO Amnesty International said in a report last year that the state had made at least €25 million from fines since the law was introduced. Fines range from €100 to €600,000 for the most serious offences. Amnesty International claimed the law has been used to target journalists and legitimate protests. PSOE pledged to reform the law after taking power last year but it remains largely untouched. PSOE previously claimed the law represented a return to a ‘police state.’ Pressure should be piled on them now they look set to stay in government to repeal it.

Here a monk takes over from the usual guide to present the statue to and bless visitors. The statuette is richly clothed and in her arms holds a baby Jesus - also black. It is the most emblematic symbol of the monastery - and for many Catholics the most holy part of the visit.

SO the unsayable and the unthinkable have been said and thought. Pedro Sanchez has hinted that he isn’t ruling out another election. The Partido Popular and Ciudadanos should shoulder the responsibility of abstaining and ensuring Spain’s governability, he said. In fact we all know that they aren’t going to do that because politicians here and elsewhere (naming no names but the UK instantly comes to mind) no longer centre their efforts on governability. Spain needs a government and it needs one that can last four years and the PP, Cs will do everything to ensure that it does not. And that won’t be because they believe this benefits the population and its welfare but because it furthers their own personal agendas and ambitions.
Home truths SHOULD there be another general election, it would be Pablo Iglesias’ responsibility as much as Pablo Casado’s or Albert Rivera’s.
The Podemos supremo should do everything possible to help Sanchez form a government but continues to hint that his 42 seats in the national parliament merit a ministry or two. The Podemos spokeswoman Irene Montero, also Iglesias’ partner, said very sternly not long ago, “Spain doesn’t need egotism, individualism and self-sufficiency.” Presumably she was referring to the PSOE, but she needs to tell that to Iglesias instead.
Making it easy DURING the election campaign, Isabel Diaz Ayuso came out with the usual family-sanctifying promises that we’ve all heard from the Partido Popular before.
Unborn children will be reserved school places, that sort of thing. But she made sense when she said her boss Pablo Casado and MPs from the PP should abstain when Pedro Sanchez makes his investiture bid. Esperanza Aguirre, former PP minister, PP president of the Madrid Community and PP national secretary general said much the same thing. Both pointed out that the PSOE to the disgust of Pedro Sanchez - enabled Mariano Rajoy to form a government in October 2016 by abstaining. Both women described facilitating a new socialist government as the lesser of two evils that would stop Sanchez from going over to the dark side ie the Catalan separatist parties.
Singer, not the song THE PP’s not-quite-so-bad showing in the regional and local elections has given Pablo Casado fresh wind. That was because people voted for the candidates - many of whom they were familiar with or knew - not the ideology. It certainly wasn’t because they suddenly decided they liked him more on May 26 than they did on April 28.
If a job’s worth doing... MIKE SENKER IN MY OPINION Views of a Grumpy Old Man OVER the years the dreaded buffet breakfast in hotels has become the norm. In my opinion it is absolutely revolting. First of all, I can’t do them because of my inability to stand still long enough to get anything, but also i’'s the food itself. I enjoy a hot breakfast and if I’m not in the mood for that I have a yoghurt and a bit of fruit. But if you don’t get there the moment the buffet opens, the hot food becomes overcooked, dried out and lukewarm. The fried eggs are dried out lumps of ... well, egg I guess. I’ve also been reliably informed that the scrambled eggs are not made by stirring cracked eggs into a bowl. They are, in fact, in most places, powdered egg which is real eggs cooked then dehydrated, packed up in bags and shipped out to the hotels. The baked beans are all dried out … you get the idea. Then there’s people that load their plates with a mixture of foods that just no-one would ever eat in their
own home. A dried out egg with a lump of melon on the same plate alongside a chocolate croissant with a slice of smoked salmon and a baby bell. I prefer the old fashioned way where a member of staff serves you from a menu. I don’t want a coffee machine to help myself. Remember, most of these places are charging 10 to 20 euros a pop for this stuff. I will tolerate a selection of cold stuff for the continental breakfast, but anything hot has to come out of the kitchen freshly cooked. Here’s a suggestion for all film and TV mini series makers. It’s something that has bugged me for a while now. At the end of a few shows and movies lately, up pops an ‘in memoriam’ notice naming a person or, in the case of Blacklist, two people, whose names are not immediately recognisable as anyone in the show, that it has been dedicated to. So off we go to Google who they are and usually do find out ourselves. My suggestion is if you are going to give them a mention as a mark of respect do it properly and tell us who they are and why they are worthy of an ‘in memoriam’ mention. Tell us a bit about them - not a two second on screen flash. If a job’s worth doing, do it properly.

These days no-one in the PP gets their knickers in a twist over anything that Aguirre says, but the party secretary general Teodoro Garcia Egea immediately responded that the party would not enable a PSOE government. “We will make it difficult,” Egea promised. Gone are the times when PP politicians nodded wise and smugly when Rajoy said that the most-voted party was morally entitled to govern. Obviously, they can’t back that particular horse any more. They know that if they did they’d automatically self-exile themselves from countless municipalities and several regional governments.

No real surprises at the local elections

At Canarian Autonomous Government level, there were no real surprises, nor at Euro level. It is said that what has caused incredulity, anger and a local political scramble, especially on the smaller, er… more traditional, islands where Cabildo work contracts are traded for votes and our leaders are of the emperorfor-life ilk, nest feathering whilst graciously receiving forelock tugging and hand kissing as their due, is the extraordinary capacity of these emperors to survive. Against all odds. Not only survive, but go from strength to strength. It’s a piece of reality that far outdoes any fiction in its bizarre twists. In other words, despite obvious, public proofs of their less than squeaky clean honesty and everybody’s insistence that things must change, somehow or the other the majority of the votes, when count-

Late May saw wildfire decimating 14 hectares of Tenerife’s Teide National Park, a hectare and a half in
Valleseco, Gran Canaria, a rubbish tip in Arrecife, Lanzarote and an area worryingly close to houses and tourist complexes in Valle Gran Rey, La Gomera. Gran Canaria’s Cabildo has just spent 2.7 million on Alertagran, a new sensor system designed for the early detection of fire and ‘meteorological and environmental incidents,’ which will cover 70 per cent of the island and its 170,000 inhabitants. As Cabildo president Antonio Morales said: “Modernisation in fire detection is especially important everywhere, given the current problems of climate change, but is especially important on the islands, which are one of the most complicated regions in Spain to defend from fire, given their topography and the way populations are dispersed within it. “Using this system, it will be possible to contact firefighters directly in a centralised manner and to speak with various agencies simultaneously, which should save valuable time when most necessary.” Fingers crossed!

BARRY DUKE A WHILE back I wrote about how I threw a posse of security guards at Gatwick Airport into a tizzy when six tins of Fray Bentos steak and kidney pies were found in my hand luggage. Guard No 1 was so perplexed that he sought a second opinion as to whether they were allowed on my flight back to Spain. A colleague was just as nonplussed. Along came a third, then a fourth. After a lengthy debate the general consensus was that the pies were OK, and I was sent on my way. Why would I want to bring pies into Spain? The answer ’s easy. Decades ago they were my favourite comfort food and I honestly thought that they had gone the way of brands like Worcestershire sauce-flavoured Twiglets, Bernard Matthews’ Turkey Twizzlers, Terry’s White Chocolate Oranges and Heinz baked beans pizza (yuck), to name but a few. When I make a business trip to the UK at the end of June I shall not bring back any more. Why? Because they are no longer what they

STEAK AND KIDNEY PUDDINGS: Were once Britain’s favourite dish. were back in the day. The tin may still say ‘steak and kidney’ but all it contains is a gooey brown gravy buried beneath a great lump of soggy pastry. Acid reflux in a can is what these abominations really are. I was reminded of those pies when a recent conversation in a bar veered over into retro British recipes. Most of the people in the
pub were of a certain vintage, to put it politely, and got all mistyeyed as they recalled jam roly-poly, coronation chicken, devilled kidneys, oxtail stew, toad-in-the-hole with onion gravy and bubble and squeak. My contribution was prawns with avocado, cheese fondues and queen of puddings. Naturally!
Which is probably why I discovered by my mid-fifties that I had developed a sizeable belly. Or a ‘balcony over the toy shop’ as the Australians so delicately put it. That’s when I hit the gym running, lost a massive amount of weight, and completely cut out all junk food. But, if I had the cash to open a
restaurant in Spain, I would revive all those old dishes because I reckon chubby expats and tourists would beat a path to my door to shovel down rum and honey babas, Arctic rolls, cheese and onion pies, brandy snaps, Bakewell tarts and steak and kidney puddings. Speaking of the latter, I learned that this particular dish was once Britain’s favourite dish. It dates back to 1861 and originally featured one ingredient not commonly seen today - oysters. These were once so plentiful they were more often eaten by the poor than the rich. Fray Bentos’s tinned version, introduced in the1970s, is still available today, but many Amazon customers are far from impressed. One wrote: ‘Absolute rubbish. I haven’t tasted anything more awful than this. Suet pastry so gluey, and the meat content abysmal. I have got a few left, but will leave for the food bank. At least there is something in the stomach for someone hungry.’ So rest assured I won’t be returning to Spain with a bunch of the things.

Technical updates and refined exterior design have now changed the best-selling models. There is a new-generation infotainment system (MIB3), the Passat stays online permanently - and this groundbreaking development enables it to offer completely new services and functions.

Jaguar E-Pace ROAD TEST by Tim Saunders THERE are three ways to drive the Jaguar E-Pace. As a manual, an automatic or with paddle shifts. So much choice should ensure that the driver never gets bored. The E-Pace is the F-Pace’s smaller brother. And as with young siblings, I speak from experience, they have to be watched or they get out of hand. And so it is with the chunky 180 Diesel RDynamic S Automatic AWD that I am driving. The motorway is full of speed cameras and police patrol cars. Fortunately, the E-Pace is fitted with both a speed limiter and a cruise control. But as I soon discover the cruise control is not the best system because although the speed might be set at 70mph, go downhill and it’ll exceed it so concentration on that speedometer is paramount. The head-up display that digitally appears above the dashboard in front of the driver helps in this regards. The raised height of this SUV
is helpful too, because it gives a good view of the road ahead and certainly helps me spot a mobile speed camera van above the motorway some distance ahead. Is this pre-Brexit country in such a state that the enjoyment of driving must be removed along with everything else? While I’m at it, it always ceases to amaze me how when there’s say a 50mph speed limit, that so many motorists completely ignore it. Inside the cabin, my wife has changed the radio station from calming classical to something more funky, which doesn’t help the calm driving atmosphere that I try to foster. Three little urchins in the back all asking questions and the police at every turn is a sure way of driving me ever so slightly mad. But we make our way slowly but surely to a little village called Pease Pottage in West Sussex. At first I thought I wasn’t going to get on with the sat nav but son Henry (three) quickly shows me the way round it and I must say I agree with him, it is quite easy. In fact it’s a God send, allowing me

to almost relax during our travels. I
find that I can rely upon it, which is a rarity often only reserved for my wife’s map reading skills. The leather seats are fine but the quantity of plastic in the cabin is not what I would expect from a Jaguar. I know this is more of a budget vehicle, but incorporating some wood would in my opinion make for a more special vehicle - which is what a Jaguar always used to be. On touching the black grille, which does make an impact, I discover it is plastic. I don’t know how much a chrome grille would cost in comparison but in

I get a similar result when I ask eldest daughter Harriett (eight) what 9 x 8 is… and from me come to think of it. Kick the accelerator down and it lurches uncomfortably forward. I cannot help but feel that this wide vehicle is better suited to wider foreign roads. Usually in vehicles fitted with electronic handbrakes there is a separate switch for the parking brake (and there is in the Jag). But the Jaguar incorporates the whole caboodle on its single gear stick, too. Despite this it can still be a time consuming exercise to make the simplest of manoeuvres when compared to a standard manual box. Also the cumbersome nature

Henry enjoys pretending to drive the E-Pace and opening the powered tailgate from the driver’s seat. All these buttons are a child’s delight. In absolute contrast to my Ford Fiesta where he can only turn on the radio and the lights. Harriett thinks the speed camera alert is clever. I don’t. So many noises going off at the same time just creates a befuddled motorist. A driver must concentrate and read the road. If they can’t do then they shouldn’t be on it. Technology is going too far. But it lives up to its name. The E-Pace is a quick vehicle and reasonably economical, too.

AFTER a long hard season, Mallorca and Deportivo de La Coruña face their two biggest matches of the year with the prize of a spot in the top division for the winners. They are contesting the promotion play-off final after overcoming Albacete and Malaga respectively in the first round of play-offs. The first leg will be played tonight (Thursday, June 20) at Deportivo’s Riazor stadium at 9pm, with Mallorca hosting the second match on Sunday, also at 9pm. There will be no penalty shootout if the teams cannot be separated over the course of two matches. Away goals count double and there will be 30 minutes of extra time in the second leg if required. If it is still a tie, promotion will come down to who finished the regular season with the best league position - in this case Mallorca. The winners will join Granada, who were second, and champions Osasuna in La Liga next season, replacing relegated Rayo Vallecano, Huesca and Girona. Mallorca and Deportivo, who finished fifth and sixth respectively, hit form at the right time of the season. THE yachts of the 52 Super Series have sailed to Cadiz this week for the second leg of the 2019 tour. The waters open to the Atlantic off Puerto Sherry, Cádiz are new to the series, but it is certain that all of the eight teams competing will have raised their game, each finetuning their setup for the different wind and sea conditions they expect at this second of five regattas in 2019. “Yes, absolutely, we can win,” Nacho Postigo, the Spanish navigator on Provezza commented on his arrival at the Marina Puerto Sherry, where the series is based this week. “Our boat feels really good, it is great all round now, and after Mahon (Menorca) we have confidence in just about every condition, it is well tested in the light flat water, in light winds and chop, medium winds flat water, moderate winds and chop, now it is good enough in all conditions. “The modifications to the boat, new keel and rudder changes and small developments to the rig, as well as the biggest change, to the crew line up, we feel that now it is down to us to sail clean

A totally new venue to the world’s leading grand-prix monohull circuit, the racing arena off Puerto Sherry might offer a variety of conditions during this mid-June week. Lorenzo had made a blistering start, moving up from 10th on the grid to fourth. But he came in too hot on turn 10 as he tried to overtake Maveric Viñales while Marquez made a move on race leader and main championship challenger Andrea Dovizioso. Lorenzo ended up taking out Dovizioso with Viñales also falling after being left nowhere to go. Valentino Rossi became another victim of the crash when he ran wide after braking late and
got caught in the incident. The end result was that Marquez was left a clear run to the flag in his home GP in Cataluña, finishing 2.66 seconds ahead of second placed Fabio Quartararo, with Danilo Petrucci third and Alex Rins fourth. This was the reigning MotoGP World Champion’s second premier class win in Barcelona and his fourth of the 2019 season. The victory is Marquez’s 48th in the premier class and helps to extend his championship lead to 37 points over Dovizioso. Honda hold a 15 points advantage over Ducati in the Constructor Championship. In a dramatic final hour Sébastien Buemi, Kazuki Nakajima and Fernando Alonso, in the #8 TS050 Hybrid, defended their Le Mans crown and secured the drivers’ World Championship in the process, but only because of a huge slice of luck. They ended up winning by 16.9 seconds from teammates Mike Conway, Kamui Kobayashi and José María López in the #7 after the latter had to pit for a puncture.
