Exclusive interview with Mojacar Mayor Rosa Maria Cano
Achievements and priorities ROSA MARIA CANO has good reason to look pleased. As head of the Popular Party candidate list for Mojacar in the recent municipal elections and mayor for the last 12 years, she must feel great satisfaction the PP emerged the clear winner, taking over 57 per cent of the vote and increasing its absolute majority in the local council. Speaking exclusively to the Euro Weekly News as she starts her fourth term of office as Mojacar Mayor, Rosa Maria put the electoral success down to her administration’s track record. “The evaluation by voters, or all of Mojacar, is based on what you promise and what you have accomplished. Our voters, and those who didn’t vote for us, see that over the last four years this government team has provided answers to the municipality’s needs”, she told EWN. The mayor stressed she was not only referring to visible achievements, but also “the involvement we have with residents,” although there is quite a list of improvements and additions to the area’s infrastructure and facilities, she pointed out.

What we do is make it easier for them to stay in the municipality as long as possible without having to turn to a residency. “We are not distant,” she added. “We try and resolve anyone’s problem. This is often very difficult, but to the best of our ability, we use all the resources at our disposal; we even get personally involved to help.” Focusing specifically on the substantial number of foreigners living in Mojacar, the local council started free Spanish classes, “particularly to make greater integration easier, especially for the British, which is

Stabbing suspect found dead A MAN suspected of stabbing his partner was found dead the day after the attack. Spanish press reported the 30-year-old Moroccan woman was in a serious, but stable condition in intensive care after she was stabbed several times in the stomach on a street in San Isidro in Nijar. Acting on information the father of at least one of her four children was the likely aggressor, Guardia Civil went looking for the 31-yearold. They came across his abandoned car and his body the following day. Spanish media said it appeared he had hung himself.

Getting the residency for the elderly up and running is, the mayor said, one of the most important projects. The works are at “a very advanced stage,” and should be completed by the end of October, she reported, at which point the council will be able to start the process of requesting the Junta de Andalucia subsidises half the 60 places, so they are available for people with limited financial resources. A by-pass running from the service station to Cuevas del Lobo with roads cutting down to different points along the main coastal drag to address traffic congestion is another important plan the local council is working on, as is a new water treatment plant to replace the existing one built 30 years ago. A medical centre located close to the petrol station which provides specialist services like X-rays and physical therapy for which residents currently have to travel to other municipalities is a further project for the next four years. A bus station is something else the municipality lacks, the mayor commented. Despite her four consecutive electoral

She told EWN, “I’m going to work in the next four years with the enthusiasm with which I’ve always worked. But I will have been mayor for 16 years when this legislature ends and 36 years in politics, so I think it’s time we must make way for younger people.” “I don’t say I’m going to completely leave politics,” she added however. “And of course whoever does stand will have my full support.” This weekend the local council, along with the whole of Mojacar, will live and
breathe the Moors and Christians festival, the municipality’s biggest, and loudest, public event of the year. It is, according to the mayor, “a fiesta unlike any other.” “There’s a large group of people who live here who organise all the events. The council collaborates: putting up stages, financially. But the part you can’t quantify financially is the work of all the Mojacans. “This fusion of the town hall with this large number of people makes it possible. So it’s really everyone’s fiesta, because we all take part.”
Earth moves in Zurgena THE National Geographic Institute reported a tremor measuring 3.4 on the Richter scale, the epicentre southeast of Zurgena, at 3.52am on Tuesday morning. The earth movement was two kilometres down and felt in other parts of the province, including Albox and HuercalOvera. There were no reports of material damage. There were also a couple of other tremors reported in the same area.

Beach clean ACEBUCHE prison inmates carried out a clean-up of the Torregarcia beaches in Retamar as part of an ecology awareness-raising programme organised by the jail’s education centre. All the participating prisoners were classified as no-risk and volunteered to take part in the community work initiative.
Police raid POLICE discovered a property was being used for sales of illegal drugs in the Chanca neighbourhood of Almeria. Officers seized heroin, cocaine, a shotgun, two air rifles and around €2,000 in cash in searches of the house and of the home of the couple arrested in the operation.

What a beauty THIS village in northern Spain has been named as one of the most beautiful in the country and one of the best places to visit this summer. Lastres (Llastres in Asturian), in Asturias on Spain’s northern Atlantic coast, is a fishing village and belongs to the Colunga urban area. It and the village of Tazones, also in Asturias, were both highlighted by the Association of the Most Beautiful Villages in Spain as two places that travellers should visit this year. Both villages also featured in a
Conde Nast Traveller article on escaping the summer Spanish heat without leaving the country. The magazine said Lastres was a calm place. Its performing arts offering and Las Tres Noches de Lastres festival, which takes place on the first weekend of August, were also highlighted as reasons to visit. Lastres won the Princess of Asturias Foundation award for Exemplary Town of Asturias in 2010. The region’s Tourist Board said the town was famous for its fishing industry, particular-
Drug den discovered A COUPLE in their 20’s are under arrest for using a storeroom in Almeria City for selling and consuming drugs. Police discovered the drug den in the Cortijo Grande area of the city after local residents reported a violent argument between a man and woman in the early hours of the morning. When officers arrived at the scene they discovered the woman had cut and seriously injured herself on the arm with a knife and needed medical attention. The patrol alerted the medical services who took her to Torrecardenas hospital. In the meantime, officers followed the trail of blood left by the woman to the storeroom, where they found 56 plastic bags containing marihuana and 161 bags of hashish, as well as what looked like cocaine and two sets of scales. The pair, identified as JGDG and OR, have been charged with crimes against public health.

Fire prevention plan now activated THE Andalucia government’s Infoca plan to protect the region’s countryside from fires from June until mid-October has been activated. Hundreds of personnel make up the Infoca Almeria Province firefighting force, supported by three transport and extinction helicopters, a cargo plane and 10 fire engines. This year they will also have a drone to observe and analyse fires at night. The budget for Almeria this year is €18.44 million, of which €8.99 million has been allocated to prevention and the rest to extinction. Part of the fire-prevention effort is the RAPCA Network of Firebreak-Grazing Areas, under which 17,700 heads of lifestock clear vegetation from 550 kilometres of strips of land. Among the administrations and bodies collaborating on the Infoca plan are the Guardia Civil, the police, the Emergency Military Unit, Civil Protection and the Red Cross, as well as the firefighting services.

ROAD BLOCK: The suspect rammed the police vehicle before speeding off.
A SUSPECTED thief evaded arrest twice in a week before police finally cuffed him. Officers detained the 39year-old as he was coming into Almeria City in a taxi shortly after a mugging in Aguadulce which the authorities believe was his work. The search for GHM began in the early hours of May 27 when he made off to avoid being pulled over in an ID check in the provincial capital. Knowing he did not have a driving licence, officers went after him, supported by
other police units. Minutes later they came across his vehicle, abandoned. Police said there were clear indications he had stolen the car. Four days later officers spotted the suspect driving another vehicle. To prevent him from taking off once more they blocked the road with a police car. Ignoring instructions to stop, he repeatedly rammed the patrol vehicle before shooting through at high speed with, police reported, total disregard for pedestrians and other motorists. The following day a
woman called 091 to report her bag had been snatched in Aguadulce. She said the muggers drove away in the direction of Almeria. Believing it probable GHM was responsible, police set up controls at entrances to the city. When officers stopped the suspect in the taxi they found the smartphone and the €88 stolen in the Aguadulce mugging. Police hit the 39-year-old with a series of charges, among them vehicle theft, criminal damage, and violent robbery.

It’s a recordbreaker! ALMERIA has made it into the Guinness World Records for the biggest ever gazpacho. No less than 9,800 litres of the cold soup to be exact! Official Guinness World Records judge Victor Cenes was at the event staged in Almeria City on Sunday to oversee a crane lift up and weigh the Unica Group cooks’ mammoth culinary creation and to confirm the provincial capital had snatched the gazpacho record from Portugal. Spain’s neighbour had held the title since 2013 with 5,000 litres. Acting city mayor Ramon Fernandez-Pacheco was among the thousands of people who gathered in the Almadrabillas Park to
celebrate the achievement. “There is no city which deserves this record more than Almeria due to the tradition and innovation of our agriculture sector, market garden of Europe, in the year in which it is the Spanish Gastronomy Capital,” FernandezPacheco told the crowd. Some 6,000 kilos of ripe tomatoes, 200 kilos of cucumber, 200 kilos of onion, 300 kilos of red pepper, 500 litres of virgin olive oil, 1,400 litres of water and 350 kilos of ice went into the Unica Group record-breaking effort. Money raised from sales of the gazpacho goes to the AECC Spanish Cancer Association and the Anda association for children with a disability.
Desert ultraendurance race revealed THE third edition of the La Desertica ultra-endurance race will be a tough challenge for the 5,500 runners and mountain bikers expected to take part. This will be the third year of the challenge, organised by the Spanish Legion based in Viator in collaboration with Almeria provincial government and councils of the host municipalities. Unveiling details last week, Don Juan de Austria de La Legion regiment commander Luis Francisco Cepeda explained participants will start from Almeria and cross the finishing line in Roquetas de Mar. Runners will have to complete a 70-kilometre route in a maximum time of 16 hours. Cyclists will have 12 hours to complete 100 kilometres. The race takes place on October 19 with a junior version the day before.

Giant stage THE organisers of the Dreambeach Villaricos electronic music festival have announced this year’s design for the biggest of the five stages: a 35-metre high pyramid-shaped structure with 800 lights and more than 400 square metres of LED screens.

Energy saving investment SORBAS is set to make major savings on its municipal electricity bill thanks to a provincial government investment in modernising the public street lighting. The €968,000 project approved by the Almeria Council Government Board includes the installation of 1,376 energy efficient LED light bulbs in the town and 27 hamlets. Existing lampposts in good condition will remain, and the current location of light points will be respected, maintaining channelling and cabling.
Provincial deputy and Sorbas mayor, Jose Fernandez, said the “highly anticipated” initiative would save the local council nearly 60 per cent on electricity expenditure, or more than €43,000 a year. Fernandez also said CO2 emissions would drop by 65,772 kilos annually. The project comes under the Andalucia Development and Innovation Agency Low Carbon Economy Plan, which in turn forms part of the European Regional Development Fund 20142020 sustainable growth programme.

On the right recycling track ADRA looks as though it is leading the way in recycling. Figures from the Poniente Residues Consortium for 2018 show the municipality’s residents each recycle an average of 11 kilos of packaging and plastic a year, while the provincial average is eight kilos per person. Adra mayor Manuel Cortes said the findings show “we are on the right track,” and “encourage us to keep on working and raising awareness about the importance of respecting
and looking after our surroundings.” But, the mayor added, “there is still room for improvement.” Cortes promised that as well as campaigns promoting recycling the local authority would make the most of recycling points and up the number of containers where possible. The Poniente Residues Consortium collected 247,000 kilos of materials from Adra’s yellow recycling bins last year, a 44 per cent increase on 2015.
Pavement proposal CUEVAS DEL ALMANZORA Council has put in a request to the provincial government to create pavements in Burjulu at its own expense. The €61,000 project envisages a pavement connecting the centre of Burjulu with the children’s play area, the hermitage and the social hall. The local authority said the main aim was to make it safer for pedestrians, who currently have to walk along the side of the busy road connecting Cuevas town with the coast.

Station renovation on track THE renovation of HuercalOvera’s old station is on track. Works have started on turning the station into an interpretation centre, cafe and multiple uses space which will serve as the headquarters for the Almanzora Sports Club. A children’s play area will also be created. The building’s exterior appearance will be preserved using original materials. Preparing to spruce up historic site INSTALLATION of an irrigation system at Adra’s Cerro de Montecristo archaeological site has begun in preparation for creating garden areas. The municipality will take delivery of 1,850 trees and bushes worth nearly €15,500 as part
of the Almeria provincial council’s Savia Plan for sprucing up municipalities and promoting sustainability. Other Adra locations to benefit from the programme include the Fishing Interpretation Centre and the Azucarera roundabout.
Solar power lighting SOLAR power is shining a light along one side of the river in Cuevas del Almanzora. The local authority has installed public lighting with LED technology with photovoltaic panels near the sports centre and municipal swimming pool. The initiative is part of the cycle lane project connecting the municipality’s sports facilities. Acting Mayor Antonio Fernandez said 12 of the solar powered lights are being installed in all “as one of the measures to improve energy efficiency and reduce CO2 emissions in the atmosphere, with the consequent environmental improvement.” Works are set to get started on the 2.6km bike track. The €157,000 project is almost entirely financed by subsidies from

MOJACAR is all set to celebrate the municipality’s biggest event of the year. The Moors and Christians fiesta will be impossible to ignore this weekend as residents and visitors get into the party swing, and the sound of musket fire and strident music echo round the municipality. Moorish and Christian encampments are set up in the village, where there will be a medieval market. All this week schoolchildren at the village’s Bartolome Flores school have been learning about Moors and Christians-related subjects like shields and medieval costume-making through activities and educational workshops. Tomorrow (Friday) the children will parade from the school up to the Plaza Nueva, followed by the fiesta’s opening ceremony. Events really get going at 9.30pm with the Moorish

fire, fireworks and all-night merrymaking. On Saturday afternoon the action moves down to the Lance beach in front of the Pueblo Indalo, where there will be a medieval encampment from 9am to 9pm offering free workshops. There will be much firing of blunderbusses, a display of horsemanship and jousting for scarfs. This will be followed by a march of troops to the Red Cross, with dancing and a fire show before more partying until dawn . Moorish and Christian fusiliers will be making a noise
by the Las Ventanicas beach midday on Sunday. The grand procession on Sunday evening brings events to a spectacular close. Locals in their full festival finery will parade in grand style down the hill from the village square to the public fountain accompanied by marching bands. Mojacar has been staging its annual Moors and Christians celebrations for three decades, over which time it has grown into a major event attracting visitors from all over and has gained Andalucia Tourist Interest recognition.
Celebrating 50 years of priesthood THE Rev Canon Alan Bennett of the Costa Almeria and Costa Calida chaplaincy celebrates 50 years of priesthood this month. To mark the occasion the canon conducted a Eucharist service at Llanos del Peral church attended by members of the Aljambra chapel, Llanos del Peral and Mojacar church congregations on June 1. After the service the congregation hosted a lunch
at the church followed by the cutting of a special cake and a Champagne toast. Father Alan was born and grew up in Portsmouth. He attended two theological colleges to qualify as a priest. His first parish was in the Isle of Wight. On retirement he moved to Spain and has been of great service to the chaplaincy, where he is much loved.

A REPORT by the EU Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO) shows that the annual losses to the Spanish economy are around €6.7 billion, equivalent to 10.6 per cent of total sales in the country.
This figure forms part of a large picture across Europe that estimates the total loss to counterfeit items being €60 billion, according to the EuroAgencia based in Alicante. Items that are most regularly

Losses to piracy found being sold illegally are clothing, footwear, toys and games, jewellery, personal items, music, pharmaceuticals and technology. The most popular item is clothing and footwear which annually accounts for €3.8 billion in losses to the market. Second is pharmaceutical which equates to €810 million.
Committed to space SPAIN is committed to supporting the country’s growing space industry including through public funding, its Science Minister has said. Pedro Duque said Spain’s industrial and scientific capabilities meant it could take on the new challenges presented by international space projects. The minister, also head of the Council of the European Space Agency (ESA) and a former astronaut, was speaking at a European conference on space in the Netherlands on Thursday.

A royal visit QUEEN LETIZIA was due in El Burgo de Osma (Soria) on June 12 to tour the town and to be a guest at a special conference being held to discuss depopulation in rural areas. The exodus from rural areas to cities has been going on for many years, but it has now become a major talking point as some
communities are literally denuded of their young people in particular who look for a better life in cities or abroad. This conference is aimed at representatives of the media who may be able to highlight the social problems involved and to try to influence the revitalisation of rural areas.

Spain under cyber-attack ACCORDING to a report from the National Centre for Infrastructure Protection and Cybersecurity (CNPIC), cyber-attacks in Spain have jumped by 600
per cent in the past four years. In 2014, the centre received reports of 18,000 attacks and by 2018 this had increased to more than
110,000, so the real figure will be much higher as not every attack is reported. Companies and individuals are at threat and it would appear that the bulk of the
attacks come from international criminal consortiums who try to block people’s computers using ‘malware’ and then demand a ransom to remove the problem.
It is understood however that a significant amount of attacks were also undertaken by hackers backed by foreign governments or their intelligence services.

Police car mounted cameras ACROSS Spain the National Police is upgrading its fleet to improve efficiency. Valencia, Zaragoza, Sevilla, Malaga, Palma de Mallorca and Vigo already have vehicles equipped with the new technology. The new cameras will be mounted in eco-friendly patrol cars to help with the environment. Each car will have three cameras which can read 400 number plates a minute, whilst the data collected is automatically checked and processed to identify false plates or stolen vehicles. Other technology which will accompany this new advancement will be dash fingerprint readers connected to a database for easy identification and extra cameras to record footage of 30 days. It is thought that by 2020, 162 of these police vehicles will be on the road making up around 10 per cent of the whole fleet.
Dystopian future SPANISH television channel Atresmedia has launched the first trailer of ‘La Valla,’ a se-
ries that depicts the capital in a fascist totalitarian light. The series shows Spain’s
capital city in 2045, predicting a dystopian landscape where the populous lives in isolated blocks, with the rich and poor separated by walls and fences. Epidemics, lack of raw materials and economic crisis are all focal points to the narrative with the fascist politics taking over from democracies throughout the country. Sonia Martinez, director of fiction at Atresmedia says, “This is a series located in the very near future in which society has suffered an involution: less technology, less freedom, more fear… in this context, a great story starring a family that struggles to survive and stay together, all with great doses of action, suspense and emotion.” La Valla, starring Olivia Molina, Unax Ugalde and Angela Molina, will make its premiere on Spanish terrestrial TV channel Antena 3.

Sports chain goes green GIANT outdoor and sporting goods store chain Decathlon is joining the movement of reduc-
ing plastic waste by offering an alternative to its plastic and paper bags. From July 3, the company will be offering an alternative to shoppers of the traditional bag. Customers will have the option to purchase bags made from 100 per cent recycled textiles from their surplus articles. The new bags will cost €1 with the complete income gained from the sale of the bags going towards the company’s annual Environmental Volunteer Campaign. Decathlon plans to reduce its CO2 emissions by 45 per cent, removing 338,000 kilos of plastic per year from circulation. Íñigo García, the person responsible for Sustainable Development of Decathlon said the ‘purpose is to offer sustainable solutions that allow our customers to make more responsible consumption decisions.’

BREXIT BRIEF Election results LABOUR has narrowly held Peterborough following a by-election last Thursday which saw the pro-leave Brexit Party push the Conservatives into third place. Labour’s candidate Lisa Forbes won the seat with a total of 10,484 votes, 683 ahead of the Brexit Party’s Mike Greene. The Conservatives came third with 21.4 per cent of the vote and the Liberal Democrats fourth with 12.3 per cent. Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn said the Conservative government’s ‘disastrous’ handling of Brexit and austerity programme had seen their support evaporate in the town. Brexit Party leader Nigel Farage said the result showed British politics had ‘fundamentally changed’ despite not claiming victory. Farage’s party had been tipped to snatch the seat from Labour, with voters there backing leave by 61 per cent in the 2016 referendum. Despite not winning, both Labour and the Conservatives suffered due in part to their respective stances on Brexit, losing 17.2 and 25.5 per cent of their previous support respectively. The Liberal Democrats, the main outwardly remain party, saw its vote share increase by 8.9 per cent. It shows that while Labour was able to win despite its Brexit infighting, parties that took a firm stance on Brexit one way or another were rewarded.

TRIUMPHING: La Rioja has conquered much of Spain.
La Rioja conquering THE northern Spanish region of La Rioja has conquered much of the country in a new computer simulation of a civil war between its 50 provinces. The GuerraCivilBot has been running the simulation since May and posts regular updates on the fictional conflict to Twitter. The war began in 2020 and the conflict is now in its fourth year. It was created by the same team of computer scientists who also made a Third World War simulation in which Spain conquered much of Europe and Africa. La Rioja conquered the neighbouring
provinces of Navarra and Soria and Alava early in the conflict. It now controls swathes of northern and central Spain, including Madrid, and recently conquered Valencia Province which was occupied by Cordoba. Elsewhere, Tenerife has conquered much of western Andalucia and Extremadura while Pontevedra controls roughly the same area as Galicia. The real La Rioja covers 5,045 square kilometres, about 1 per cent of Spain and is home to 315,675 people, which is around 0.7 per cent of the population.

Ins and outs of the Padron
Living in Spain can bring with it an array of issues which may not have been encountered when living in the UK. There are lots of things to consider, and we are here to help try to make the transition and life in Spain a little easier by compiling a series of helpful facts and figures relating to a variety of topics.
IN simple words, the padron is a local certificate that you are given when you register at your town hall. In Spanish it is called ‘certificado de empadronamiento,’ and helps compile a list of those people who live in a municipality. The padron is used by the government and local authorities to keep a ‘head count’ on how many people live in the area, and as such receive financial assistance in the form of subsidies and grants from provincial, regional and central authorities for the provision of services. Anyone who lives for more than six months in Spain is required to register on the padron. However, the certificate itself only lasts for a limited period of time, and must be renewed. A handy website is: www.spanishsolutions.net/of ficial-documents-in-spain/padron To register on the padron you need: Your passport, Your NIE or residence certificate, The deeds to your house or a copy of your rental agreement, A recent utility bill in your name. To add someone onto your padron, as it must contain all occupants, you will need: • Title deeds of the property, • The passports of both parties, and copies, • A utility bill, • Both certificates of residence, • Rental agreement (if renting and not residing with owner). Since you need the padron certificate to become a Spanish resident, but you cannot give the padron office your residency until you apply for it, the padron offices usually give a set period to return and present your Spanish residency. Residents who can demonstrate a specified time on the padron, can also receive benefits or a cash grant when getting married to another resident, or could qualify for financial assistance for any children born in Spain. The traffic department of Spain, require a padron to register a car in your own name, to import a car from another country, to qualify for a Spanish driver’s licence, and in some cases to purchase mobile phones or electrical goods. BIG JOB: Police had to smash the rocks by hand.
Hard labour for police POLICE had to smash up nearly 19 tonnes of rock with sledge hammers to find 785 packages of cocaine which had been disguised as stone. Officers had learned that a shipment of 188,000 kilos of stone was being used to smuggle the drug into Spain.
The cocaine had been mixed with a rocky mixture which, when set, made it indistinguishable from the stones in the shipment. So National Police officers had no option but to roll their sleeves up, grab sledgehammers and do some serious hard labour to
find the drugs packages - each one of which held more than a kilo of cocaine. Online calls for ‘prisoners to be brought in to do the job’ were ignored. Eleven people - all Colombians and Venezuelans - were arrested in the operation in Humanes de Madrid.
The real cost of corruption AROUND €60 billion is estimated to be lost to corruption in Spain every year, according to the latest figures from the International Monetary Fund (IMF). IMF figures showed the amount lost to corruption is equivalent to around 4.5 per cent of Spanish economic
out put ( Gr oss Dom est i c Product, GDP). The figures follow the appearance of a University of Boston corruption expert at Bar cel ona’s I nst i t ut e of Economics this week. He said corruption is very di ff i cul t t o m easur e and added IMF estimates could
be underestimating the costs as they do not take into account social costs and other factors. It comes as a recent study from the BBVA Foundation found the Spanish economy could grow by up to 1 per cent more each year if corruption is properly tackled.
UNESCO status THE bells of churches in 16 towns in Castilla y Leon were run on Saturday to mark the granting of UNESCO World Heritage status to a natural park there. Las Loras geopark, in Burgos Province, has been declared a World Heritage site following a decision from the UN’s culture agency. An
event was held in the town of Sedano to mark the awarding of the status. Las Loras covers an area of more than 95,000 hectares. The Covalagua springs, Las Tuerces rock formations, Horadada Canyon and the Monte Bernorio archaeological site are among its attractions.

THE WEEK IN POLITICS By Joe Gerrard SPAIN’S acting prime minister has held talks to try and form a government this week, with potential coalition partners naming their price for their support. Pedro Sanchez met with the leader of the leftist Podemos Pablo Iglesias on Tuesday. The two previously allied to get legislation through the Congress of Deputies prior to April’s snap general election. Initial talks held between the two parties before local, regional and European elections in May seemed to go smoothly, with sources from both saying their past working relationship created trust. But a PSOE-Podemos pact is not straightforward for either side to achieve. Sanchez and other senior PSOE figures previously said they want to govern along while other parties join in a confidence and supply arrangement, voting with the government where necessary. Iglesias is however pushing for a full coalition government

with Podemos deputies serving as ministers. Iglesias told Sanchez on Tuesday that he wanted the Labour brief which would give his party control over work laws and the welfare system. His party also wants a say in environmental, tax, public investment and gender equality policy-making, opening up more ministries for their control. This would force Sanchez
to dispense with key PSOE figures in his Council of Ministers. PSOE and Podemos also do not have the numbers between them to govern in the Congress of Deputies, meaning they would have to reach out to smaller, regional groups. But their support will not come cheap. The Partido Regionalista de Cantabria (PRC), which has one member of the
Congress, has already demanded €1.1 billion in investment for the region for their backing of the government. If Sanchez feels he cannot spare the money or would prefer to deal with one other party then the centrist Ciudadanos also remains a potential partner. The maths is on the side of PSOE and of Albert Rivera’s party in this scenario. Their combined seats would get them four seats clear of the 176 majority figure. But the pact is fraught with wider political considerations. Although it is favoured by big business and other elements of the Spanish establishment, entering into a coalition could dampen Rivera’s efforts to make Ciudadanos Spain’s leading opposition party. Sanchez met with Rivera on Tuesday despite the latter declaring he would never work with the acting prime minister.
Far-right worries THE centrist Ciudadanos’ candidate for mayor of Barcelona said he is concerned about his party’s overtures to the far-right as talks on pacts to govern local and regional authorities continue. Manuel Valls said meetings between Ciudadanos officials and those from the far-right Vox risked normalising an ‘extreme’ party. He has previously spoken out about his party’s decision to enter into a coalition deal with the conservative Partido Popular (PP) in Andalucia which is backed by Vox. Vall’s comments have exposed a fissure in a party which pitches itself as progressive and liberal. Ciudadanos leader Albert Rivera has previously refused to pigeon hole it as either left or right. But his refusal to work with the left-leaning Partido Socialista (PSOE) and his pivots from the centre to the right suggest the party is retreating from Spanish politics’ middle ground. Elsewhere, Ciudadanos candidate for head of the Madrid Region Ignacio Aguado has also suggested he could break ranks and join with PSOE to govern there. He also ruled out working with ‘populists and nationalists’ a thinly-veiled reference to Vox. Such divisions could come to hamstring a once insurgent force in the Spanish centre.

Child poverty call Gardai and Guardia collaboration AS part of the 175th anniversary of the Guardia Civil, two members of the Irish police force have been awarded ‘La Cruz de la Orden del Merito de la Guardia,’ the Cross of Merit of Order of the Guardia Civil. Detective Superintendent Seamus Boland of the Drugs and Organised Crime Bureau and a liaison officer, who cannot be named for operational reasons, have been celebrated for their work fighting Irish crime gangs who were operating in Spain. This included providing assistance which led to the con-
viction of James Quinn, aged 35, at a court in Malaga, the getaway driver in the murder of Gary Hutch in 2015. Quinn was also convicted of possession of illegal weapons. The ceremony took place at the Guardia Civil Headquarters in Mallorca and amongst those present were the Assistant Commissioner of An Garda Síocháná, John O’Driscoll, who praised the ongoing collaboration between the two police forces relating to investigations associated with organised crime, with an Irish connection.
‘HIGH RATE’: The EU said Spain should spend more on tackling child poverty. THE EU has called on Spain to improve its support for low-income families to tackle the ‘high rate’ of child poverty. The European Commission drew up a report on the situation facing disadvantaged Spanish families which recommended investing in the welfare system and social housing to tackle the issue. The Report on Spain found that the child poverty rate remained very high in Spain although it has fallen in recent years. It also stated that Spanish spending on the welfare system remains lower than oth-
er EU member states. The number of Spanish children dropping out of school early is also ‘excessively high,’ the report found. ‘Efforts to reform the education system have stalled. Companies say they have trouble finding people with the necessary skills especially in regard to information technology and communications,’ the report stated. T h e C h i l d r e n ’s P l a t f o r m N G O s a i d i t welcomed the report and its recommendations, which also included creating a High Commissioner for fighting child poverty.
School denounced for autism comments FOUR teachers from a school in Sevilla have been denounced after reportedly being recorded ridiculing a girl with autism in their class. The seven-year-old girl, who has not been named, suffers from Pervasive Developmental Disorder with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), Specific Language Disorder (SLE) and epilepsy.
Her parents began to notice strange behaviour in the girl after she had two seizures in a short time and began displaying signs of self-harm. These behaviours allegedly intensified during the school week then eased during weekends. When questioned, the teachers denied noticing any unusual behaviour but, unconvinced, the parents sent the girl to class
with a tape recorder in her bag. In the six hours of recording phrases such as ‘the girl’s brain is broken,’ ‘she has already turned upside down,’ ‘wash your hands, you filthy girl, I’m watching you play with snot’ or ‘in the asylum there was this profile in adults.’ The case has been presented to the courts for further investigation.

Regulator to take on cartels
THE head of Spain’s market watchdog has said the fight against cartels in the public works contract bidding process remains a top priority. National Commission of Markets and Competition (CNMC) President Jose Maria Marin Quemada said the watchdog regularly saw companies banding together in Temporary Company Unions (UTEs) for bids. While there is no problem with UTEs in general, their use in contract bidding distort markets and undermine competition, the president added. Marin Quemada has proposed raising the €60,000 fine limit to tackle the issue.

EU ends Spanish debt procedure THE European Commission (EC) has formerly requested the end of the excessive debt procedure brought against Spain in 2009 but said reduction efforts should continue. The EC’s request is pending improvement from the European Council of member states. “Once the Council adopts this decision, all procedures for excess deficits that date from the eurozone crisis will be closed,” the EC said. The decision came after Spain’s public spending deficit stood at 2.5 per cent of economic output (Gross Domestic Product, GDP) last year. It

Spanish Economy Minister Nadia Calviño said Madrid was satisfied with the EC’s decision and pledged to cut the deficit to 2 per cent of GDP by the end of 2019. The EC said there was a risk of Spain ‘significantly’ deviating from its spending targets this year and in 2020. The warning comes as the left-leaning Parido Socialista (PSOE) pledged to hike taxes and boost spending if it can re-enter government following
April’s snap general election. The EC’s announcement follows comments from its Economic Commissioner Pierre Moscovici who said about a month ago it would request the shelving of the procedure. Spain was one of 24 member states subject to the procedure in 2011 when the eurozone debt crisis was at its height. The excessive deficit procedure forms part of the EU’s Stability and Growth Pact. It states budget deficits must not exceed 3 per cent of GDP and overall public debt should not exceed 60 per cent of GDP.
Iberdrola green energy push ENERGY company Iberdrola is planning to invest more than €300 million in a new 590-megawatt solar plant in Extremadura which is set to be the biggest in Europe. The firm’s plan, which would see the 1,300-hectare site enter service in 2022 and employ about 1,000 staff, comes as part of moves towards generating more power from renewable sources. Iberdrola has also made a deal with financial company Macquarie’s Green Investment Group subsidiary to bid for a 750-megawatt offshore wind farm near the Netherlands.

EC lodges foreign asset case THE European Commission (EC) has lodged legal proceedings against Spain in the European Court of Justice (EJC) over laws requiring residents to declare assets in other EU member states. The EC said the Model 720 law, which came into force in 2012, hands down ‘disproportionate and discriminatory’ penalties to non-compliant individuals and companies.
The rules were brought in by the previous conservative Partido Popular (PP) government in a bid to curb tax fraud. The requirement also discourages residents and companies investing elsewhere in the single market, violating the freedom of movement for capital which is one of the EU’s four founding freedoms.

Bond yield at new low THE yield on 10-year bonds issued by the Spanish Treasury fell to about 0.6 per cent last week, the lowest level in a decade according to market data. Bonds were trading on markets at 0.6 per cent on Thursday. It touched 0.599 per cent at one point, the lowest level for 10-year bonds in history. The fall in the yield came as the European Commission (EC) announced it would close its excessive debt procedure for Spain. The EC placed Spain in the mechanism in 2009 following the outbreak of the financial crisis the previous year. The low yields indicate investors are now more confident that Spain can meet its debt obligations. That confidence comes as the EC said there was a risk Spain could deviate ‘significantly’ from its debt targets this year and in 2020. Yields on five-year bonds issued last week went negative on the markets, reaching -0.09 per cent. The Treasury offered investors a marginal interest rate of 0.033 per cent.

THE CEO of CaixaBank has said the banking sector has made mistakes in recent years after a recent survey found almost 70 per cent of Spanish people viewed it negatively. Gonzalo Gortazar said the reputation of banks among Spanish customers put the sustainability of the industry at risk. It comes as almost 70 per cent of respondents to LLYC’s Reputational Relevance report said they viewed banks as ‘lousy’ or ‘bad.’ Consumers said they felt banks lacked ‘social sensitivity.’ Gortazar said the sector had a bad reputation and said banks should stop complaining and instead focus on addressing the problem. “We need to make sure that the population perceives a change in the industry,” the CaixaBank CEO told an insurance sector meeting. Boss Botin’s jobs call SANTANDER president Ana Botin has said the Spanish economy needs to redistribute wealth effectively ahead of the expected replacing of between 40 and 50 per cent of current jobs with machines, adding the country risks being ‘left behind.’

THE head of CCOO trade union’s committee for the Euskaltel telecommunications company Javier del Blanco said he feels ‘total uneasiness’ towards the planned takeover of British rival Zegona due to concerns over whether it is motivated by making quick profits.

We have the President of our greatest and strongest ally visiting, on what I considered a brilliantly selected occasion for our two countries, and this so-called contender for number 10, the leader of the opposition, who has condoned terrorist organisations and supports Communist regimes, refuses to break bread with the Queen of the realm and the leader of the free world - basically because he doesn’t like some of his policies! I mean how juvenile and utterly ridiculous can you get? Not only that, he chooses instead, to address a (much smaller than anticipated or reported) rabble of lefties, at a rally comprising mainly of followers epitomised by an overweight (ex) NHS worker, with a ring through her nose and purple hair, screaming ‘Nazi Scum’ into the face of an OAP who dares to display ‘Welcome Trump’ on his hat. As for Trump’s unfortunate boo boo, with his remark on the NHS. This was obviously a mistake in the heat of a Q and A session, from a man who comes from a country far away that is awash with the initials of whole conglomerations of different companies. NHS could have been the title of the Nuneaton Haricot Sowing organisation for all he knew. As soon as he realised the error, the following day he made it absolutely clear that there would be no meddling in the NHS whatsoever. No, I think Trump and his extremely sophisticated First Lady, made a very favourable impression on this visit. I just hope the antics of a few utterly childish members of our so-called leaders and their motley rag tag of supporters, didn’t give him the impression that the majority of the British people all follow the same lines of infantile persuasion. The people behind the publication BUSINESS people and friends of EWN from across the Costas joined the team for an afternoon of socialising, music, drinks and tapas to mark EWN National Day. CEO Michel Euesden explained: “All day the team have worked and put their heart and soul into celebrating 20 years producing papers. Today is about the people involved. We all have a story and have a life, aside from what we do. We are not our job title, we are real people. “Seven years ago my life was different. Of all the charities that we continue to support, I was one of those people who received that support when I was ill. Never think you are alone.” Co-owner Steven added: “We want to thank everybody present and all of the team for their hard work. Some people have been here as long as us and it has been a wonderful journey.”

In thanking and motivating the complete EWN team from across six regions, Michel Euesden spoke about her illness, life experiences, beliefs and principles, all of which have helped her overcome challenges. On her recovery from her illness, she told the EWN team: “I got through that with the help of you guys. What people don’t tell you about serious illness is that you suffer from depression. But I decided to live.” She added: “Give thanks for the things you have. Be grateful.” Michel urged everybody to believe in their own abilities, to set and continually strive to achieve their goals, to realise their full potential and always be thankful. “You always feel better when you move and take action. The more you give the more you receive,” she said. Husband and EWN co-owner Steven Euesden also took to the stage to share his enviable wealth of sales knowledge in a combined drive to ensure EWN remains at the top of its game - the leading weekly, free Englishlanguage newspaper in Spain.

One found where are the others? NICK HORNE’S Morning Read Freelance correspondent, London, England OFF the west coast of Scotland lies the Isle of Lewis and reputedly hidden in the 12th or 13th centuries by a passing ivory merchant was a hoard of chess pieces. Enough pieces to make up four complete sets of chess except for one Knight and four Warders. The hoard was discovered and the long lost treasure consisted of 93 objects. Of these, 82 are at the British Museum in London with the remainder in the collection of the National Museum of Scotland. The location of the remaining five pieces remains unknown. On July 2, 2019 what appears to be an additional piece from the Lewis Hoard, the first to be discovered since 1831 comes up for auction. It appears in the Ledger of an Edinburgh antique dealer in 1964 as an ‘Antique Walrus Tusk Warrior’ recording the purchase of the Warder. According to a family spokesman: “It can be assumed that he (the owner) was unaware he had purchased an important historic artefact. It was stored away in his home and then when my grandfather died my mother inherited the chess piece. “My mother was very fond of the Chessman

She believed that it was special and thought perhaps it could even have some magical significance. For many years it resided in a drawer in her home where it had been carefully wrapped in a small bag. From time to time she would remove the chess piece from the drawer in order to appreciate its uniqueness.” The origins of the Lewis Chessmen probably lie in Trondheim in Norway, a centre for the carving of chessmen in the 12th and 13th centuries. The good condition of the pieces and their lack of wear supports the theory that they were, at the time they were lost, the stock of a trader in chessmen who did not return to

their resting place to recover them. Scholars have advance competing theories, however, this one appears to have the strongest claim. In any case, collectively they are a significant symbol of European civilisation. Neil Macgregor, a past director of the British Museum, included the Lewis Chessmen amongst his selection of ‘The History of the World in 100 Objects.’ He said that “if we want to visualise European society round the year 1200, we could hardly do better than look at how they play chess. And no chess pieces offer richer insights than the Lewis chessmen.” The warders who made up the Hoard are of
two types, the majority are bearded with a sword in their right hand and shields either at their left side or in front. Three are shown biting the tops of their shields, marking them out as representation of those legendary Norse warriors known as Berserkers. “The whole world is like a chess board, of which one square is white and another black” wrote the Franciscan John of Wales, “following the dual state of life and death, praise and blame.” The society - familia - of this chessboard are men of this world who are all taken from a common bag and placed in different parts of this world and, as with individuals, have different names. One is called king, another queen, a third rook, a fourth knight and a fifth alphin (bishop), with a sixth called pawn.” Which of the men and women of the world will bid to acquire this piece, a chess Warder lost to the world for more than seven centuries. Where are the remaining four chess pieces? Perhaps the estimate of £1,000,000 set by Sotheby’s will call them out. Nick Horne, London, England

While Foreign Office advice puts Crimean War battleground tours off-limits to ordinary travellers, some opportunist firms offer tourists in Ukraine the chance to visit the modern-day war zones. Ads for trips have appeared in areas frequented by tourists, containing phrases like ‘Impress your friends with the ultimate selfies’ and ‘see where the fighting is.’ Incredible! Or how about a trip to Afghanistan, Iraq or Algeria? All available to visit by fearless tourists courtesy of trigger-happy tour companies, though finding adequate travel insur-

HEATWAVE: Keep your pets hydrated.
Keeping your dog cool during the heat JUST like humans, dogs can suffer from sunburn and heatstroke during the hot summer days, so it’s important to give them a little extra care. Dogs can cool themselves only by panting and sweating through their paw pads, so keep them in a well-ventilated place. Pets left outside should have plenty of water and access to shade, bearing
in mind the sun shifts. Pavements can get very hot in warm weather. If it’s too hot to touch with your hand, then it’s too hot for a dog’s paws. A great exercise for your pet during the hot days is swimming. Under no circumstances should dogs be left in a parked car in hot weather. On a 26ºC day the temperatures inside a shaded car is 32ºC,
and the inside of one parked in the sun can reach 70ºC. A dog showing any symptoms of heatstroke - such as restlessness, heavy panting, vomiting, tiredness or lack of coordination - should be taken to a shady spot immediately. And there are pet-friendly sunscreens that should be used on exposed areas, including nose, ears and tummy.
PENTECOST, or Whit Sunday having passed, we are just entering the season of Trinity, with this coming Sunday, June 16, being Trinity Sunday. But I wonder how well we understand the significance of this particular festival? For the Trinity must be one of the hardest concepts to comprehend in the whole of the Christian religion. It’s certainly something that many followers of Islam and Judaism find incomprehensible, being convinced that I, and other Christians like me, worship three Gods. But no, along with these other great faiths, I emphatically believe there is just one God, and can happily endorse the Muslim creed that ‘there is no God but ‘The God,’ He is God.’ But just as I am a son to my parents, a father to my children and a husband to my wife, so we Christians believe that this one God may be known in three very different ways, as Father, Son and Holy Spirit, yet remains a single entity. Of course it’s not an easy concept to understand, as we have a tendency to think of God in human terms.
Back in the 50’s, J B Phillips, aware of this tendency to belittle the nature of God, wrote a book entitled ‘Your God is too small,’ which challenged the perceptions of that time, and indeed of our own time too. For by definition, God must necessarily be more than merely ‘super-human,’ so isn’t restricted as we are, by time or location. God, in my mind, being way beyond the understanding of even the most brilliant human scientist, must necessarily transcend all the physical laws which He created for our protection, so can be present at any moment, past, present or future, anywhere in the universe, which after all, Christians, Jews and Muslims all believe He put in place. And it is only as we allow ourselves to appreciate God in this light, that concepts such as the Trinity, that The One God is Father, Son and Holy Spirit, can begin to make sense. And so, in this Trinity season, which extends right through until the end of October, we are encouraged to contemplate our understanding of God, to ensure that the God we worship is not ‘too small.’

NOW, I am a glass half full kind of guy and I just think about how wonderful it is to live here in Spain. Earlier today my cousin spoke to me after he had returned home to Blighty yesterday, to howling winds and rain and has even lit a fire indoors. Meanwhile, I am writing this, sat in my shorts in the garden, enjoying a nice cooling breeze, a cacophony of birdsong and the scent of flowers. For lunch, I will have some really fresh fish simply grilled with a nice glass of cold white wine. People ask me, what do you miss about England, the seasons, the food, the beer? Beyond belief THE sheer number of candidates jostling for the Conservative leadership astounds me. I don’t know why anyone in their right mind would want the prime minister’s job at the moment. NEWS that anti-tourist graffiti appeared on the walls of Granada City last week has reignited the debate over the effects of an economically vital industry on Spanish locals. Spain’s tourism sector is the third largest contributor to the overall economy, accounting for about 10 per cent of total output (Gross Domestic Product, GDP) according to government figures. The industry is responsible for developing large swathes of the country’s Mediterranean coastline which expatriates now call home, as pictures of Benidorm from the 1950s and 1960s illustrate. Cities such as Granada also draw a hefty dividend from tourists who spend their money in local shops, bars and restaurants, benefiting the wider economy. The traffic of travellers into Spain has also helped to build bonds across borders and break down misconceptions held by tourists and locals about each other and their countries. But as with all aspects of the economy, the gains are seldom shared equally and the price of success for some is suffering for others. The Canary and Balearic Islands are both home to anti-tourism movements who argue the industry has led to overdevelopment, harming their homes and the environment. In Barcelona the rise of holiday rentals has seen residents priced or even turfed out of neighbourhoods where they grew up because of the lure of profits from tourism. If tensions are to be eased then the benefits from the industry must be more widely shared and the impact on locals reduced.

JORIS PLU WHEN you type the words ‘all you need is…’ in any browser, then you will discover that most of the time the next word is ‘love.’ I believe that even without looking it up you would have known this. For the most of us this is common, we hear it all the time. This is the way it is. When asking people, which I did, what this means for them personally, 99 per cent gave the same kind of answers - that love needs to come from outside of themselves. From a partner, children, animals, employers, neighbours, the government, the city council, the waiter of a restaurant, the car sales person, food and drinks. The list is endless. I am pretty sure that if you ask yourself that same question at this very moment, you would also like that ‘love’ should come from an out-

marketing and what others have told us that something or someone else will make us happy.
So self-love is not included here, that kind of self-love that we need so much in our life. Without it people may feel lost and may feel the need for others to fill in that gap. So start loving yourself. When I asked the question to the same people if they knew how to do this most of them could not give an answer. You may be in the same position yourself right now. Do not blame yourself. You have probably never learned how to love yourself. I will write some guidelines how to start loving yourself (more) in forthcoming columns. In this week’s column I want to tell you that all the inspiration, all the power you need in your life is within yourself and therefore first of all you have to love yourself. Imagine what your life would be like if you really loved yourself, if you could fully plug into your own power starting doing
those things ‘you’ would like and love to do. It’s your life. Not someone else’s life (any more). The life inspirer you are looking for is within you in the first place. So what you can do already today is just tell yourself, even out loud if you can, that you really love yourself. And together with this put a big smile on your face. Make it positive. It does not matter at this stage that you do not know exactly how to deeply love yourself. Just by saying it your brain will already get into a positive mode. Do this a few times a day. Make it a habit, like eating, drinking and sleeping. Make it a daily routine. I am sure things will already start to change in your life in an inspiring way.

FINDINGS: It turns out coffee has many benefits.

How you should be washing your hair WE grew up being told to wash our hair every day, and later learned that we should probably only wash it a couple of times a week in order to maintain its natural oils. Washing your hair properly can make a world of difference to its health, shine and condition. Making common mistakes could be damaging your hair without you even realising it. Here are some tips from New York hair pros Nunzio Saviano and Kyle White on how to wash your hair the right way: • First of all, make sure you are going to be using the right shampoo and conditioner for your hair type. • Start by rinsing your hair, preferably with warm water. Hair should be properly wet before applying any products. • Condition the ends first if you have long hair (past your
shoulders). This will protect fragile ends from drying out and further damage. • Apply shampoo - but only at the scalp. Don’t use too much shampoo. • Be gentle when massaging the shampoo into the roots of your hair. If you are too rough, you can permanently damage your hair’s cuticle, leading to breakage and frizz. Don’t use circular motions, as this can tangle your hair. • Smooth the lather from the shampoo over the ends of your hair in a stroking motion. • Rinse out the shampoo with warm water. • Don’t shampoo your hair again unless your hair is really dirty and the first wash didn’t produce lather. • Condition from the midlengths to the tips of your hair. Squeeze some of the water out of your hair before conditioning.
After applying the conditioner, clip your hair up and finish showering. Rinse the conditioner as the final step of your shower. The longer you leave the conditioner on your hair the better it absorbs. Never put conditioner on your roots as that is where the natural oils are and it can make it look greasy. • Rinse with cold water to shut the cuticle. How many times a week should you wash your hair? It depends on your hair type. If you have oily fine hair, you may need to shampoo daily. Normal or dry hair may need to be washed around three times a week. BEST RESULTS: Washing your hair correctly can make all the difference.

Braised rabbit in a mustard sauce OLIVE TREE FARM was set up about four years ago with the intention of achieving a level of self sufficiency. We have poultry for meat and eggs, goats for milk, rabbits and small pigs for meat and harvest our 70 olive trees each year for oil. We also grow a variety of fruits and vegetables.
SMALL time farmers, living in the country and feeding themselves from the fruits of their land, often resorted to very simple but tasty dishes, using what was in season at the time. Although we haven’t bred our own rabbits for a couple of years now following an outbreak of VHD which resulted in the death of over 25 of them, here at Olive Tree Farm, we do still buy them off our neighbours, or from the butchers. This particular recipe, even though the ingredients are few, is incredibly tasty. If rabbit isn’t your thing, you

can substitute chicken, using thighs or breasts, but the rabbit version is superior in flavour and has a mild taste all of its own! If you don’t know how to break down a rabbit, ask the butcher to cut it into six portions. You will get the four legs and the back section cut into two. Allow the rabbit meat to come to room temperature before browning it off which helps the meat to
relax a little. Ingredients 1 rabbit, cut into six portions 4 tablespoons butter 2 large shallots, chopped or two small/medium onions 1 cup white wine 1 cup water 1/2 cup grainy country mustard, like Dijon 1 teaspoon dried thyme 3/4 cup of double cream 4 tablespoons finely
chopped parsley Method Heat the butter in a large sauté/frying pan over a medium heat and add the rabbit portions three at a time, allowing them to colour to a nice golden tone without scorching. Set aside when done. In the same pan as you have browned the rabbit in, add the shallots or onions, I used onions this time as we had a lot ready to harvest. Move them around in the pan and allow them to brown, this will take around three-four minutes. Turn the heat up high, add the white wine and scrape the bottom of the pan to lift all the tasty brown bits off the bottom. Add your mustard, thyme and water and bring it to a boil. Taste it at this point and check if it needs a little more salt. Add the rabbit portion and coat them in the sauce. Cover the pan with a lid, turn
down the heat to low and simmer for around 45 minutes. (If you are using wild rabbit, it may take a further 15 or so minutes). You want the meat to be almost falling off the bone, so adjust timings to suit, but it should take longer than an hour. When the rabbit is cooked, remove from the pan and set aside on a warm plate. Reduce the sauce by about half by simmering without the lid on the pan. Turn off the heat. Add the cream and parsley to the pan and stir it through to combine. Serve whilst hot, spooning the sauce over the rabbit portions. I also stirred through some garden peas and spinach at the end just before adding the cream to make sure it was all heated through. Although you can serve with potatoes and extra vegetables, it is delicious served on its own with lots of crusty bread to mop up the sauce!
Full on flamenco ALMERIA will reverberate to the sounds of stamping feet and guitars next month when the city celebrates its 53rd Flamenco Festival. The city council has unveiled details of the extensive festival programme. Among the highlights will be five nights of performances in the bullring, f re e re c i t a l s i n c i t y squares and master classes with major figures from the world of the art form, including Almeria-born Tomatito. There will also be a performance by the Andalucia Flamenco Ballet in the Maestro Padilla auditorium. Mayor Ramon Fernandez-Pacheco pointed out the last three editions of the flamenco festival attracted more than 22,000 people to the city, “making it a top level tourist and cultural attraction.”

He voted against them, lining up with Mariano Rajoy and the Partido Popular because he wanted another election, assuming that Podemos could succeed in overtaking the PSOE in the longed-for but elusive sorpasso. Iglesias got the election but not the sorpasso. The rot really set in after the 2016 party conference when Iglesias managed to head off a challenge from one of the party originals, the now sidelined and alienated Iñigo Errejon who didn’t manage to pull off the Madrid Community presidency for Manuela Carmena’s Ahora Madrid. If Podemos had obtained better results in the regional and local elections Iglesias would be in

Podemos no longer can a strong position when bartering a price for Podemos’s national parliament seats that Pedro Sanchez needs to become president. Having disappeared from many local and regional governments and becoming barely noticeable in others he has little to bargain with, but still believes he is entitled to a place in a future Pedro Sanchez Cabinet. Political observers and commentators haven’t been able to avoid observing and commenting t h a t w h i l e S p a i n ’s R i g h t i s
preparing to make pacts, the Left is falling apart. And unless Iglesias is careful it could all end in tears and another election from which Podemos is unlikely to recover.

it is not appealing and those split ends are appalling. A trim and conditioner are called for and while he’s still in Samson mode Iglesias could try toning down his demands and expectations. After saying ‘No te preocupes,’ to remanded ERC leader Oriol Junqueras when they met in the Madrid parliament as the latter picked up his MP’s credentials, Sanchez was accused of promising to get him out of jail free and hold a referendum. In fact Junqueras had said that possibly he had compromised him with the greeting which doubtless he had - so good-mannered Sanchez said, ‘Don’t worry.’ Who can blame Sanchez for remaining silent about Cataluña? Whatever he says is going to upset somebody and probably everybody.

Dancing social AWARD-WINNING line dancing instructor and choreographer Rob Fowler was in Arboleas last week for a workshop and social afternoon, giving local enthusiasts the chance to learn new steps from one of the best. Rob taught Almeria Line Dance members and a group from Benidorm five dances, from novice to advanced level, with social dancing in between. Rob is considered a pioneer of traditional and modern line dancing, initially rooted in Western dance, expanding to include music of almost every genre and his choreography has pushed back the boundaries.

Investment priorities WATER and the Almanzora main road are ranked as top priorities in Almeria in the Andalucia regional government’s 2019 budget. The Junta de Andalucia has allocated more than €125 million to the province. Of this amount, €55 million is earmarked for hydraulic infrastructure, notably the Lower Almanzora desalination plant, and €7 million for the Almanzora Valley dual-carriageway which will ultimately run from Fines to the A-7 Mediterranean motorway. Other projected major investments include €7.1 million for the completion of the Almeria Maternity-Children’s hospital, due to open next year, and a further €5.2 million for education facilities. Junta delegate in Almeria, Maribel Sanchez, said she is confident the regional budget will be approved on July 18. The delegate described the administration’s 2019 budget as “the most social in Andalucia’s history,” pointing out the average investment per inhabitant in Almeria is €176, compared with €135 for the whole region. “Sevilla is now closer to Sevilla than ever,” according to Sanchez. She said this budget would mean

EMPHASIS: The Junta de Andalucia delegate in Almeria highlighted the funding for the Almanzora main road. Almeria would no longer be the region’s ‘forgotten’ province. The delegate put particular emphasis on the Almanzora main road funding. The Junta expects works on the road to resume imminently with the allocation of the project for the Cucador-Concepion stretch for €25.5 million. The following step will be the Concepion to A7 section, which will require some €24
million. The €7 million set aside in the Junta’s budget for the works would be to move the works along. “The machines are not going to go while these stretches are unfinished,” according to the delegate. Other specific planned investments in the province’s road network include the Vera-Garrucha road and improvements to Garrucha port accesses.

The performance of Joan Sutherland as Lucia was held by the critics and public alike to be a sensation. A global superstar was born. I enjoyed the performance, but at the age of 20, had nothing to compare it with, apart from a few records by Callas and Tebaldi. It was, after all, my first attendance at an opera. More important to me was that I could let everybody know I had been there. I could then associate myself with the emergence of a world famous celebrity and pass myself off as a culture vulture. I was to bring such experiences into conversation at every opportunity for the next 45 years. I was an unashamed snob in my 20’s and 30’s. I look back in horror and remorse on the behaviour and attitudes I felt I had to adopt to maintain my ‘position’ in this exclusive society - that of the English middle-

ALTERED STATES: ‘Hey look what I can do!’ all human knowledge in one printed repository. Then popular computing happened. In the 2000s Microsoft’s attractive Encarta knocked it from its lofty perch until it, too, succumbed to the internet. Since then nothing has been able to withstand the steamroller of the mighty ‘crowd-edited’ behemoth Wikipedia. Britannica is down but not (entirely) out. Like so much of the traditional media it pins its hopes
of survival on a website paywall, a small alternate voice in the vast Wikipedia wilderness. Other reference sites nurture similar hopes: Oxford with its famous dictionaries, specialist publishers controversially putting scientific papers behind paywalls, even struggling local newspapers hoping you will actually cough up to learn what’s happening down your street. As the new ‘font of all human knowledge’ Wikipedia seems unstoppable. Free to anyone with an
internet connection where Britannica was only for the privileged, Wikipedia is now in 300 languages with 40 million articles and 500 million visitors a month. Britannica served as the inspiration for that ultimate fictional encyclopaedia of life, the universe and everything, Encyclopedia Galactica, first conceived by sci-fi novelist Isaac Asimov back in 1951, then recycled by Robert Heinlein and Arthur C Clarke, until it appeared most famously in Douglas Adams’ fabled Hitchhiker’s Guide series. Thus Britannica begat Encarta which begat Wikipedia which may beget Galactica if humanity lasts that long, and despite it all, one thing can be certain: despite Herculean efforts, rest assured that we will never, ever, manage to collect all human knowledge together in one repository, thereby granting it a monopoly on facts. As Douglas Adams emblazoned on the cover of his own fictitious guide: ‘Don’t Panic!’

more. We look at those ‘ahead of us’ with envy. Likewise we live in fear that those ‘behind us’ may overtake us. We hate being wrong about anything. There seems to be a general lack of awareness of the shallowness of this kind of existence. What surprises me is that in my experience, so many of us in our 60’s and beyond have not yet recognised the futility of the pursuit of ‘acceptance.’ Either we have not examined the potential in ourselves or we simply have no desire to escape our ‘comfort zone’ in search of a more meaningful and less stressful life. What we feel as material security is in fact entrapment in a perpetual rat-race. In our 60’s many of us sense a change as we begin to ask ourselves: Where do we come from? Why are we here? Where are we going? As we become more appreciative of nature and our surroundings, we seek inner peace and space, and reflect more on the challenges facing the survival of our planet and the behaviour of its resident humanity. Assuming we have consequently attained the inner confidence which should result, we cease worrying about how we are seen and evaluated by others.
Just ask Google? THOSE of us so attached to actually owning physical works of reference are a dwindling band. Unable to afford the mammoth 24 printed volumes of the Oxford English Dictionary years ago, I shelled out handsomely for its CD version. But that too is now obsolete: pay your modest fee these days and you can look up nearly a million words on Oxford’s website. Where my computer still chokes on installed reference works, younger users just ask Google. Why, they wonder, would you buy a physical source when it’s all there at the tap of a screen in your pocket? Oh well, my sprawling Britannica does at least have one advantage over a smartphone. It’s 60 kilos. Looking stuff up is often the best exercise I get.

BMW and Jaguar Land Rover partnership By Dilip Kuner IN one of the more surprising-yet-unsurprising moves in the car industry BMW and Jaguar Land Rover have announced a collaboration to develop the next generation of electric drive systems. It is surprising news in that both manufacturers have already invested huge sums in pioneering technology, but unsurprising in that it is clear even the biggest companies can’t afford to develop the next generation of electric technology on their own. When it comes down to it the move is all about money. Sharing knowledge, research, development engineering and suppliers will save vast sums by avoiding duplication and generating economies of scale. The deal encompasses electric drive systems, including the motors and operating software.
Nick Rogers, Jaguar Land Rover engineering director said: “The transition to Autonomous, Connected, Electric and Shared (ACES) represents the greatest technological shift in the automotive industry in a generation. “The pace of change and consumer interest in electrified vehicles is gathering real momentum and it’s essential we work across industry to advance the technologies required to deliver this exciting future. “We’ve proven we can build world beating electric cars, but now we need to scale the technology to support the next generation of Jaguar and Land Rover products. It was clear from discussions with BMW Group that both companies’ requirements for next generation EDUs to support this transition have significant overlap making for a mutually beneficial collaboration.” Klaus Fröhlich, Member of the Board of Management of BMW AG,

Abarth 124 GT ROAD TEST by Nick Fletcher ABARTH is a performance car brand established 70 years ago and is now part of the giant Fiat Group, though the latest Abarth is a stand-alone sports model without any Fiat badges and establishes its own distinct identity. The Abarth 124 GT is a classic rear-wheel-driven two-seater sports car with a 168 hp turbo-petrol engine - 30 hp more than in Fiat’s own 124GT version - a n d i s l i g h t e r, h a s firmer suspension and a limited-slip differential for greater traction.
The result is that the manual-gearbox Abarth has a zesty 0-100 kph time of 6.8 seconds and top speed of 232 kph (144 m p h ) . Ye t a v e r a g e f u e l economy is still impressive at 15.6 kpl (44.1 mpg), with emissions of 148 g/km. Automatic transmission with paddleshifters is also available. Back to the future GORDON MURRAY could be said to be going back to the future with the design of his latest supercar. Dubbed the T.50, it has been conceived as the spiritual successor to the iconic Murray-devised McLaren F1. Murray has promised that it will be the ‘purest, lightest, most driver-focused supercar ever built.’ To achieve this target the design team has focused on weight and aerodynamics - and this is where a throwback to Formula 1 in the 1990s comes in, although updated for a modern road car. Uniquely, the supercar will feature a 400mm ground-effect fan, similar to that on Murray’s famous Brabham BT46B Formula 1 ‘Fan Car.’ This was so good the technology was banned as being ‘against the rules.’ Some readers may remember the secrecy that enveloped the Brabham, with the distinctly low-tech device of a dustbin lid at times used to hide the hightech innovation from prying eyes in the pit lane.

The Gordon Murray Automotive team has established a new technical partnership with a Formula One team, which will make its rolling-road wind tunnel available to develop the aerodynamics of the T.50. neering and design. They will have to pay ‘in excess’ of €2.2 million plus taxes for the privilege. Murray said of the car: “An unflinching dedication to lightweighting, highly-advanced active aerodynamics and world-leading standards of advanced engineering will ensure the T.50 rewrites the supercar rulebook. Our experienced team is applying the same uncompromising approach to design and engineering that shaped every facet of the F1, and they are able to deliver substantial improvements over that car in every meaningful way.” The engineering planning, plus all interior and exterior styling of the new vehicle has been carried out by Gordon Murray Design and it will be manufactured in the UK by Gordon Murray Automotive. It will be powered by a compact and light, naturally-aspirated, all-new V12 engine. The unit will be capable of an extraordinary 12,100rpm - unparalleled in a V12 road car - and 650hp to deliver unmatched power-toweight. However, Murray says: “I have absolutely no interest in chasing records for top speed or acceleration. Our focus is instead on delivering the purest, most rewarding driving experience of any supercar ever built - but, rest assured, it will be quick.” The T.50 adopts the same three-seat format that Murray pioneered for the F1, with the driver sitting in a central ‘jet-fighter-style’ driving position. The new car builds on the F1’s highly-advanced aerodynamics, taking Murray’s ground-effect innovations to an all-new level with intelligent management of underbody airflow coupled with the 400mm fan at the rear. The fan actively controls underbody airflow, allowing the upper surfaces of the car to retain purity and beauty, without the exaggerated scoops and spoilers familiar in the segment and equipping the T.50 with the most advanced aerodynamics of any road car, claims Murray.

If successful, this would be the second time Spain has hosted the competiton - the first time was in 1982. Portugal has never held the finals, but did host the 2004 European Championship. The countries put in a joint bid for the 2018 tournament, but lost out to Russia. Spain, the 2010 world champions, hosted the 1982 World Cup and launched a failed bid along with Portugal to stage the 2018 tournament which was awarded to Russia. Portugal has never hosted the World Cup, but held the 2004 European Championship. Morocco has tried five times to host the tournament, failing each time. It lost out to the United States, Mexico and Canada for the 2026 competition. A joint bid by Argentina, Uruguay, Chile and Paraguay for the 2030 tournament has also been announced. It will mark the centenary of the competition, which was first hosted by Uruguay in 1930.
SPAIN and Portugal have started to investigate a joint venture to host the 2030 football World Cup, but they seem to have dropped Morocco, which was originally thought to be part of the bid. At a meeting in Porto (Portugal) representatives of the countries’ football federations said in a joint statement: “After holding several meetings, the football federations of Spain and Portugal can confirm that they are set to begin an in-depth analysis of the possibility of presenting a joint bid to host the 2030 World Cup. “Both federations would like to take this opportunity to state that the governments of both countries have been properly informed about this process, given that they will have a key part to play in its development.” But there was no mention of Morocco. Last year Spanish PM Pedro Sanchez had suggested a three-way bid during a visit to the country. With the expansion of the finals tournament to 48 teams it had been suggested spreading the load across three nations was the best way to proceed.

RAFAEL NADAL not only took his 12th Roland Garros title on Sunday, but he also took the lead in the battle for the year-end No 1 ATP Ranking from Novak Djokovic. Nadal passed Djokovic in the ATP Race To London with 5,505 points, taking a 780point advantage over the second-placed Serbian (4,725). It is the third consecutive year in which Nadal has led the Race after the season’s second Grand Slam, and he has fittingly won the title on the Parisian clay on each occasion. This sets the stage for what could be an exciting battle for the yearend No 1 ATP Ranking. This is the closest the Race has been between the top two players after Roland Garros since 2012, when Nadal led Djokovic by 630 points after claiming his seventh trophy in Paris. In 2017, Nadal led second-placed Roger Federer by 2,870 points and last season, he was ahead of second-placed Alexander Zverev by 1,545 points. Nadal is now in a strong position to make a run for his fifth year-end finish (2008, ‘10, ‘13, ‘17) atop the ATP Rankings. Nadal would join Djokovic,

trophy for the 12th time. The Spaniard overcame Dominic Thiem to prevail 6-3, 5-7, 6-1, 6-1. “It is truly incredible. I cannot explain it,” said Nadal. He is now just two Grand Slam titles behind Roger Federer’s record 20 for most Grand Slam titles in the Open Era. Thiem held his ground for the first two hours of the final, even taking his first-ever set from Nadal in four meetings at Roland Garros. A majestic shotmaking display greeted fans as both competitors pushed each other to the limit. But as the match wore on, Nadal found his top gear and Thiem was unable to sustain his level.

his title in the race that starts at 3pm on Saturday. More importantly this is his last WEC race under h i s c u r r e n t To y o t a c o n tract and it offers him and teammates Sebastian Buemi and Kazuki Nakajima the opportunity to clinch the WEC championship. At the moment they are 31 points ahead of the second Toyota in the standings. But this has led to pitlane gossip that Alonso will turn away from WEC having achieved everything in the series in order to concentrate on Indy Car racing and his hunt to collect the Indianapolis 500

But speaking to the 24 Hours of Le Mans YouTube channel, Alonso quashed the rumours that he will not return after this year.
