Dead dogs shock By Dilip Kuner POLICE are investigating after they found 36 dogs living amongst the corpses of eight more at a Costa Blanca ‘animal association.’ The Guardia Civil’s animal protection service, SEPRONA, had learned about the transport of 40 Samoyed dogs from a property in Mazarron to a finca in Sax. When they inspected the latter, they found the dead dogs four adults and four new born puppies. They appeared to have been savaged to death by the

other animals. In a second inspection another three dogs and a cat were found dead. Again, they appeared to have been mauled. Of the remaining dogs just four were found not to need veterinary attention. The majority were suffering from ailments including leishmaniasis and rickets, while one had bite marks. Police found that the unnamed association was not licensed for its activities and did not have documentation to prove the dogs received required veterinary attention. Two people have been charged with a string of offences
relating to animal welfare, failure to correctly dispose of the dead dogs, failure to report animal attacks to the town hall and the absence of quarantine facilities and health controls. Samoyed puppies are much sought after and can fetch prices of up to €800.

The 25-year-old currently works in a private medical clinic in the Murcia city of Cartagena and is two weeks away from completing her studies in Aesthetic Medicine. She told Spanish press that medicine keeps her busy, which is why she left her job as a model. H o w e v e r, w h e n s h e w a s a p proached to participate in the world famous event she jumped at the opportunity. Grohs was contacted by Miss World Spain and immediately said yes, seeing it as an opportunity “to live an enriching experience that allows me to meet many people and visit other places like Melilla.”

Fake ‘gas man’ thefts TORREVIEJA Guardia Civil has arrested a 24-year-old man who has been accused of a number of domestic robberies, whilst posing as a fake gas inspector. A Belgian man had stumbled across the suspect upon returning to his Torrevieja home, claiming he was there to review gas installations.
By the time police arrived, he had fled, but he was quickly apprehended nearby. In the boot of his car were found items of ‘dubious’ origin, such as latest model mobile phones, jewellery, a clock, a pressure washer and garage controls, as well as cash. Officers discovered that many of
the items came from robberies committed in Torrevieja, San Fulgencio and Guardamar del Segura - which have subsequently been returned to their rightful owners. The Algerian man was placed at the disposal of the Court of Instruction No 2 of Torrevieja, and has been jailed without bail, pending trial.

Museum works start GUARDAMAR is to see refurbishment work start on the home of Francisco Mira I Botella next week, now that the contract has been awarded. A budget of €291,000 has been allocated by the Intelligent Heritage Company and local town hall in order to turn it into a museum, celebrating the life of the man who transformed the seaside town. The councillor of Historical Heritage, Pilar Gay, announced the news following a site visit with the mayor, José Luis Sáez. As well as re-establishing a courtyard, the museum will show off images, documents and tools relating to the works done to prevent the advancing sand dunes a century ago. Officials estimate it will open to the public in November.
Drug smuggler A GERMAN resident of Valencia was caught at AlicanteElche Airport this week, allegedly smuggling 2.2 kilos (4lb 13oz) of cocaine paste from Sao Paulo in Brazil. The 67-year-old man is now in custody awaiting trial, accused of drug trafficking. The detained was found to have manufactured a false bottom in his suitcase, where officers found the stash in two vacuum packed bags hidden in the concealed compartment.

MAZARRON Guardia Civil officers are investigating the owner of an animal rescue group accused of mistreating a group of Samoyed dogs that were being imported illegally. Investigations found eight dead dogs among a group of 36, which also included four puppies.
SPAIN’S Minister for Agriculture recently announced that the UK imports more than a quarter of vegetables grown and frozen in Murcia, more than any other country. Amazingly, the region produces 30 per cent of Spain’s frozen vegetables, despite covering only 2.2 per cent of the country’s area.

What a beauty THIS village in northern Spain has been named as one of the most beautiful in the country and one of the best places to visit this summer. Lastres (Llastres in Asturian), in Asturias on Spain’s northern Atlantic coast, is a fishing village and belongs to the Colunga urban area. It and the village of Tazones, also in Asturias, were both highlighted by the Association of the Most Beautiful Villages in Spain as two places that travellers should visit this year. Both villages also featured in a
Conde Nast Traveller article on escaping the summer Spanish heat without leaving the country. The magazine said Lastres was a calm place. Its performing arts offering and Las Tres Noches de Lastres festival, which takes place on the first weekend of August, were also highlighted as reasons to visit. Lastres won the Princess of Asturias Foundation award for Exemplary Town of Asturias in 2010. The region’s Tourist Board said the town was famous for its fishing industry, particular-

Tabarca clean-up VOLUNTEERS and the diving unit of SPEIS (Prevention, Firefighting and Rescue Service) cleaned up the seabed around the Tabarca Island on Sunday. As part of Environment Month, the day was to raise awareness of the threat made by discarded waste and, in particular, plastic. Positioned as it is, just off the Santa Pola coast, the little island is prone to collecting many tonnes of floating waste that originates from the mainland. For this reason, Tabarca became a prominent focus for the volunteers. So much so, many helpers got the first boat there and started clearing waste as soon as they could. As well as staff from the SPEIS, helpers included people from the diving community, Tabarca workers and members of the general public. Local councillor, Jose Ramon Gonzalez, thanked everyone for the ‘totally voluntary’ initiative.

THE Maritime Service of the Guardia Civil surprised a fishing boat which was fishing illegally in the Tabarca Island Marine Reserve, off the Santa Pola coastline - a crime that could incur a fine ranging from €600 to €60,000. The Malaga-registered boat was discovered early during the early hours of last Friday morning. The reserve is in place to protect the waters surrounding the island, only a few miles off the region’s Mediterranean coast. Found underwater is a wealth of beautiful marine flora and fauna, being safeguarded since 1986 when protected status was granted. Such serious crimes are immediately reported to the General Secretariat of Fisheries of the Ministry of Agriculture, because of their severity. Only in May of this year, the same officers discovered a 250m long ‘phantom longline’ of underwater fishing hooks, which can be incredibly dangerous to swimmers and divers, alike.

Athlete raises cancer awareness ORIHUELA sees the ‘seven days, seven half marathons’ challenge this week in aid of the Spanish Association Against Cancer. Athlete Rafael Martín, from the local Tragamillas Athletics Club, plans to run a total of 148 kilometres to help promote the charitable events. He said: “Anyone can join the challenge, either for a full race or to accompany me for a stretch.” The president of the Spanish Association Against Cancer thanked Rafael for getting involved, “because for us it is
very important that there are people so supportive that they lend themselves, so that together we can get the quality of life for the sick and their families.” Councillor for Sports, Victor Valverde, said: “It is very important to raise awareness among citizens to collaborate with these type of associations because of the importance they have and what they represent for society.” Paco Belmonte, president of the athletics club, also encouraged the public to participate in this challenge.

‘Carers’ arrested A COUPLE who allegedly emptied the bank account of an elderly woman in their care have been arrested by Torrevieja Guardia Civil. The crime came to light when the couple’s home was searched following their eviction through non-payment of rent. A bank card was found belonging to the victim, an 83-year-old lady, and the matter was reported to the police who visited her bank, where it transpired over €12,000 had been withdrawn without her permission. In addition, utility bills had gone unpaid and disconnection was imminent, as there was only €28 left in the account. Attributed crimes include bank fraud and theft, with the couple, aged 42 and 43, currently released on bail facing charges.
Taxis to be compensated SAN JAVIER taxi drivers who suffered as a result of the closure of the nearby airport have each been given a share of €180,000 as compensation. As soon as the last flights took off from the Mar Menor site on January 14, the local industry reportedly took a hit. There were also fears that the general profile of the area would be affected. The regional government insists that the monies will be used to modernise and adapt the 18 cabs in question.
Fine refunds TRAFFIC fines totalling more than €7,000 were reportedly given in error by the Local Police at San Javier Airport and must be refunded. This blunder is apparently down to an agreement about signage being out of date from January 2017.

Sharks and shopping HABANERAS Shopping Centre continues its commitment to the environment by launching an important social awareness and beach cleaning campaign for the beaches of Torrevieja. #YoSoyTorrevieja started last weekend and involves raising awareness and proactively cleaning the area in a variety of ways. To coordinate with World Envi-
ronment Day, a large lifesized shark sculpture was installed, which doubles as a rubbish bin for all of the plastic collected by the community from local beaches. The ‘la patrulla tiburón’ (Shark Patrol) workshops are also underway, which encourage and create awareness among the young about the importance of caring for
the sea and our beaches. Habaneras is joined by the City Council and AGAMED, promoting ‘June: Environment Month.’ Olga Hernández, manager of the shopping centre said, “This campaign means nothing without the collaboration of each and every citizen of Torrevieja as it is intended to preserve our most valuable habitat, our coasts.”

Leading the way THE ADAPT Metal Detecting club has been active for more than nine years now and offers a committed search and recovery service, helping look for lost keys, watches and jewellery etc on local beaches and in the sea. Last year, the club was asked by the Murcia ‘Hippocampus project’ (Save the Sea Horse) to help find lost fishing weights in the Mar Menor. Toxic lead has a terrible effect on the sea and its inhabitants, with sea horse re-
production in particular suffering badly. ADAPT have so far found 43kg (95lb) of lead, donating it to the San Pedro visitor centre to be melted down and sold on to help fund the research and development of the new born sea horses. Equality programme ends SEXUAL crimes and the causes of sexual crime are high on the agenda here on the Costa Blanca, now that Orihuela’s councillor of Equality, Sabina-Goretti Galindo has reported that the ‘More secure, more equal’ programme has been concluded. She said that the initiative “intended to form a local group and draft a specific
protocol to act effectively against gender violence.” As a result, the municipality now has a multidisciplinary team, composed of more than 30 professionals, who work together to guard the public against gender violence. Hundreds raise thousands MORE than €6,500 was raised at the 10th consecutive ‘Walk for Life’ in aid of the AECC. The event was organised by Maria and the Pink Ladies and Panthers and held at the promenade amphitheatre Playa Flamenca, supported by the Orihuela Costa Town Hall, which provided the facilities and policing. Some 425 people took part in the actual walk plus pet dogs and little children in pushchairs. The total raised on the day was €6,595.58 but
the final figure is expected to be more once all the outstanding sponsorship has been collected and paid in. A special mention was made of a young man from Los Dolses, 12-year-old Conor Kavanagh who asked to sing on stage if he collected donations from the crowd. He raised an amazing €375, and put in a great performance afterwards. AECC is a charity formed to help in the fight against cancer.

STASH: Police found bags of marihuana and cocaine. A COUPLE in their 20’s are under arrest for allegedly using a storeroom in Almeria City for selling and consuming drugs. Police discovered the drug den in the Cortijo Grande area of the city after local residents reported a violent argument between a man and woman in the early hours of the morning. When officers arrived at the scene they discovered the woman had cut and seriously
Drug den injured herself on the arm with a knife and needed medical attention. The patrol alerted the medical services who took her to Torrecardenas hospital. In the meantime, officers followed the trail of blood left by the woman to the storeroom,
where they found 56 plastic bags containing marihuana and 161 bags of hashish, as well as what looked like cocaine and two sets of scales. The pair, identified as JGDG and OR, have been charged with crimes against public health.
THREE species of angel shark have been officially protected after being included in the List of Wild Species in Special Protection Regime and the Spanish Catalogue of Threatened Species. The Canary Islands are the last bastion in Spain for the bottom-dwelling sharks, which are the second

SPAIN has over 25 million users on social network with WhatsApp being the most used application. The Annual Study of Social Networks 2019 carried out by IAB Spain showed that 85.5 per cent of Internet users between the ages of 16 and 65 use social networks. According to the report, around 49 per cent of male Internet users and 51 per cent of female users use social networks. The average age of a social network user is 39. The most used is WhatsApp, followed by Facebook and YouTube. The report also indicated that Instagram is the most popular amongst the youth between the ages of 16 and 30 years old. Rescue at sea THE crew of an Irish yacht had to be rescued by helicopter after it started to founder off the northwest coast of Spain. A Spanish Maritime Rescue (Salvamento Maritimo) helicopter was scrambled when the Loa Zour sent out a call for help at 8.30pm last Thursday during an Orange Alert for Storm Miguel which had swept past the Atlantic coast of
Portugal and Spain and up the English Channel. The yacht was about 85 nautical miles northwest of A Coruña when the incident occurred. The seas were too rough to attempt a rescue direct from the boat, which was bobbing and swirling dangerously, so the crew had to leap into the sea one by one to be rescued
by the helicopter. Maritime Rescue said winds of 60 knots (120kph) and waves from four to six metres made the task ‘very complicated.’ The four Irish and one Croatian crew members were winched to safety and transferred to Alvedro in northern Spain in good condition. The yacht is thought to be out of Kinsale in Cork.

BIG JOB: Police had to smash the rocks by hand.
Hard labour for police POLICE had to smash up nearly 19 tonnes of rock with sledge hammers to find 785 packages of cocaine which had been disguised as stone. Officers had learned that a shipment of 188,000 kilos of stone was being used to smuggle the drug into Spain.
The cocaine had been mixed with a rocky mixture which, when set, made it indistinguishable from the stones in the shipment. So National Police officers had no option but to roll their sleeves up, grab sledgehammers and do some serious hard labour to find the drugs
packages - each one of which held more than a kilo of cocaine. Online calls for ‘prisoners to be brought in to do the job’ were ignored. Eleven people - all Colombians and Venezuelans - were arrested in the operation in Humanes de Madrid.

Child poverty call
‘HIGH RATE’: The EU said Spain should spend more on tackling child poverty. THE EU has called on Spain to improve its support for low-income families to tackle the ‘high rate’ of child poverty. The European Commission drew up a report on the situation facing disadvantaged Spanish families which recommended investing in the welfare system and social housing to tackle the issue. The Report on Spain found that the child poverty rate remained very high in Spain although it has fallen in recent years. It also stated that Spanish spending on the welfare system remains lower than oth-
er EU member states. The number of Spanish children dropping out of school early is also ‘excessively high,’ the report found. ‘Efforts to reform the education system have stalled. Companies say they have trouble finding people with the necessary skills especially in regard to information technology and communications,’ the report stated. T h e C h i l d r e n ’s P l a t f o r m N G O s a i d i t welcomed the report and its recommendations, which also included creating a High Commissioner for fighting child poverty.

Crunch time By Joe Gerrard SPAIN’S acting prime minister has held talks to try and form a government this week, with potential coalition partners naming their price for their support. Pedro Sanchez met with the leader of the leftist Podemos Pablo Iglesias on Tuesday. The two previously allied to get legislation through the Congress of Deputies prior to April’s snap general election. Initial talks held between the two parties before local, regional and European elections in May seemed to go smoothly, with sources from both saying their past working relationship created trust. But a PSOE-Podemos pact is not straightforward for either side to achieve. Sanchez and other senior PSOE figures previously said they want to govern along while other parties join in a confidence and supply arrangement, voting with the government where necessary. Iglesias is however pushing for a full coalition government with Podemos deputies serving as ministers. Iglesias told Sanchez on Tuesday that he wanted the Labour brief which would give his party control over

work laws and the welfare system. His party also wants a say in environmental, tax, public investment and gender equality policy-making, opening up more ministries for their control. This would force Sanchez to dispense with key PSOE figures in his Council of Ministers. PSOE and Podemos also do not have the numbers between them to govern in the Congress of Deputies, meaning they would have to reach out to smaller, regional groups. But their support will not come cheap. The Partido Regionalista de Cantabria (PRC), which has one member of the Congress, has already demanded €1.1 billion in investment for the region for their backing of the government.
If Sanchez feels he cannot spare the money or would prefer to deal with one other party then the centrist Ciudadanos also remains a potential partner. The maths is on the side of PSOE and of Albert Rivera’s party in this scenario. Their combined seats would get them four seats clear of the 176 majority figure. But the pact is fraught with wider political considerations. Although it is favoured by big business and other elements of the Spanish establishment, entering into a coalition could dampen Rivera’s efforts to make Ciudadanos Spain’s leading opposition party. Sanchez met with Rivera on Tuesday despite the latter declaring he would never work with the acting prime minister.

TRIUMPHING: La Rioja has conquered much of Spain.
La Rioja conquering THE northern Spanish region of La Rioja has conquered much of the country in a new computer simulation of a civil war between its 50 provinces. The GuerraCivilBot has been running the simulation since May and posts regular updates on the fictional conflict to Twitter. The war began in 2020 and the conflict is now in its fourth year. It was created by the same team of computer scientists who also made a Third World War simulation in which Spain conquered much of Europe and Africa. La Rioja conquered the neighbouring
provinces of Navarra and Soria and Alava early in the conflict. It now controls swathes of northern and central Spain, including Madrid, and recently conquered Valencia Province which was occupied by Cordoba. Elsewhere, Tenerife has conquered much of western Andalucia and Extremadura while Pontevedra controls roughly the same area as Galicia. The real La Rioja covers 5,045 square kilometres, about 1 per cent of Spain and is home to 315,675 people, which is around 0.7 per cent of the population.

Ins and outs of the Padron
Living in Spain can bring with it an array of issues which may not have been encountered when living in the UK. There are lots of things to consider, and we are here to help try to make the transition and life in Spain a little easier by compiling a series of helpful facts and figures relating to a variety of topics.
IN simple words, the padron is a local certificate that you are given when you register at your town hall. In Spanish it is called ‘certificado de empadronamiento,’ and helps compile a list of those people who live in a municipality. The padron is used by the government and local authorities to keep a ‘head count’ on how many people live in the area, and as such receive financial assistance in the form of subsidies and grants from provincial, regional and central authorities for the provision of services. Anyone who lives for more than six months in Spain is required to register on the padron. However, the certificate itself only lasts for a limited period of time, and must be renewed. A handy website is: www.spanishsolutions.net/of ficial-documents-in-spain/padron To register on the padron you need: Your passport, Your NIE or residence certificate, The deeds to your house or a copy of your rental agreement, A recent utility bill in your name. To add someone onto your padron, as it must contain all occupants, you will need: • Title deeds of the property, • The passports of both parties, and copies, • A utility bill, • Both certificates of residence, • Rental agreement (if renting and not residing with owner). Since you need the padron certificate to become a Spanish resident, but you cannot give the padron office your residency until you apply for it, the padron offices usually give a set period to return and present your Spanish residency. Residents who can demonstrate a specified time on the padron, can also receive benefits or a cash grant when getting married to another resident, or could qualify for financial assistance for any children born in Spain. The traffic department of Spain, require a padron to register a car in your own name, to import a car from another country, to qualify for a Spanish driver’s licence, and in some cases to purchase mobile phones or electrical goods. UNSEEN: Amnesty International said bullying often went unreported.
Bullying warning BULLYING in Spanish schools is not seen but is affecting thousands of children and their families every year, according to a human rights NGO. Amnesty International said in its new report on the issue that several cases of bullying reported to the Ministry of Education had not been followed up. Esteban Beltran, Amnesty International’s director in Spain, said measures to detect bullying were not working meaning the issue is not being tackled properly.
“We are only seeing the tip of the iceberg because thousands of cases are not officially registered, either due to data collection errors or by a lack of training fo r te a c he rs a nd fa milie s to s pot the signs of bullying,” Beltran said. There were 25,366 reports of bullying made to the ministry on its helpline in 2017, the first year of its operation. Almost 7,510 of them were identified as possible cases of bullying but only 278 cases, 3.7 per cent of the total, were referred to the Educational Inspectorate.

Chain goes green GIANT outdoor and sporting goods store chain Decathlon is joining the movement of reducing plastic waste by offering an alternative to its plastic and paper bags. From July 3, the company will be offering an alternative to shoppers of the traditional bag. Customers will have the option to purchase bags made from 100 per cent recycled textiles from their surplus articles. The new bags will cost €1 with the complete income gained from the sale of the
bags going towards the company’s annual Environmental Volunteer Campaign. Decathlon plans to reduce its CO2 emissions by 45 per cent, removing 338,000 kilos of plastic per year from circulation. Íñigo García, the person responsible for Sustainable Development of Decathlon said the ‘purpose is to offer sustainable solutions that allow our customers to make more responsible consumption decisions.’

Women ‘recycle more than men’ MORE than four in five women aged between 55 and 64 with higher levels of education regularly recycle, besting men of the same profile according to a new survey. Coinciding with the World Environmental Day, the Social Barometer of IPSOS published a report stating Spanish women are more aware of the impor-
tance of recycling than men. The equivalent figure for men of the same background was 78 per cent. IPSOS said in a report on the survey that Spanish people are increasingly moving towards sustainable living. “The Spanish are increasingly aware of the challenges associated with environment protection,” IPSOS said.
IPSOS surveyed people on their recycling habits and their attitudes to environmental issues. It found Spanish people aged between 18 and 24 were more alarmed about climate change than other age groups. In addition, 94 per cent believe that recycling is important, although one in four are reluctant as it is ‘inconvenient.’
Dystopian future SPANISH television channel Atresmedia has launched the first trailer of ‘La Valla,’ a series that depicts the capital in a fascist totalitarian light. The series shows Spain’s capital city in 2045, predicting a dystopian landscape where the populous lives in isolated blocks, with the rich and poor separated by walls and fences. Epidemics, lack of raw materials and economic crisis are all focal points to the narrative with the fascist politics taking over from democracies throughout the country. Sonia Martinez, director of fiction at Atresmedia says, “This is a series located in the very near future in which society has suffered an involution: less technology, less freedom, more fear… in this context, a great story starring a family that struggles to survive and stay together, all with great doses of action, suspense and emotion.” La Valla, starring Olivia Molina, Unax Ugalde and Angela Molina, will make its premiere on Spanish terrestrial TV channel Antena 3.

Spain under cyber-attack ACCORDING to a report from the National Centre for Infrastructure Protection and Cybersecurity (CNPIC), cyber-attacks in Spain have jumped by 600 per cent in the past four years. In 2014, the centre received reports of 18,000 attacks and by 2018 this had increased to more than 110,000, so the real figure will be much higher as not every attack is reported. Companies and individuals are at threat and it would appear that the bulk of the attacks come from international criminal consortiums who try to block people’s computers using ‘malware’ and then demand a ransom to remove

Police car mounted cameras ACROSS Spain the National Police is upgrading its fleet to improve efficiency. Valencia, Zaragoza, Sevilla, Malaga, Palma de Mallorca and Vigo already have vehicles equipped with the new technology. The new cameras will be mounted in ecofriendly patrol cars to help with the environment. Each car will have three cameras which can read 400 number plates a minute, whilst the
data collected is automatically checked and processed to identify false plates or stolen vehicles. Other technology in this new advancement will be dash fingerprint readers connected to a database for easy identification and extra cameras to record footage of 30 days. It is thought that by 2020, 162 of these police vehicles will be on the road making up around 10 per cent of the whole fleet.

THE town of Catral just loves to party and the whole of June continues to see something for everyone as the Fiesta resumes. Thousands of people turned up for the Chupinazo Festival which took place last Saturday and almost every night from now on until the end of the month sees a reason for the local population to just party. Tonight (Thursday) it’s the turn of local football club Atlético Catral CF to celebrate their season in the Plaza Casa de Cultura whilst on Friday, the same venue welcomes a performance by youngsters from the Conser-

weekend, but that’s not all. At 11am on Saturday there’s the children’s party with bouncy castles and plenty of games at La Palmera Park and then in the evening there’s the annual mul-
ticolour parade through the town with more than 2,000 participants from 40 local clubs which starts at 8.30pm and ends up with another of the town’s famous street parties. Sunday sees an early opening of the municipal swimming pool with a special party and then in the evening there will be a great fashion show at the Plaza Casa de Cultura. Things then go a little quieter for a few days with emphasis on the graduation ceremonies and celebrations of students from a number of schools, but on the following Friday, for the first time, the council has introduced a Feria de Sevillanas (a celebration of flamenco dance and music) which starts at 7pm followed by a performance from flamenco group Arte Payá at 9pm in the Plaza Casa de Cultura. This will be another excuse (as if one was really needed) for all of the ladies to appear in their most attractive party dresses.

With some 30 national and international awards including a bronze medal at the 2015 European Championships in Azerbaijan and silver in the 2018 European Championships in Russia, he is supported by Project FER, a private organisation dedicated to helping athletes from the Valencia region. His next aim is to win gold at one of the international tournaments, but in the meantime, the Municipal Sports Centre in Catral has been named after him and the new arena was inaugurated last Thursday, June 6 with the athlete present.

Ciudad Quesada NEWS LAST week, we wrote about the dog park in Lo Marabu and one of our readers whilst congratulating us on ‘a lovely article’ has contacted us with an update on the situation. It would appear that there has been something of a downturn in the facility as the water is no longer on tap (possibly because of an undiscovered leak) and it is thanks to the kindness of a local lady who delivers bottles of water at her expense that the dogs can have a drink. So far this year, it is believed that no fumigation has taken place, so mosquitos are enjoying a taste of different species of dogs as well as their owners. Our reader also suggests that part of the dog park may be taken by the local council in order to open a children’s playground and that a further percentage of the area may be used to build a new school. By all reports this is still a very popular meeting place for both four-legged and twolegged creatures of all nationalities and our reader has not only met a number of new friends who come from as far

Moors, Christians and Pride events ALTHOUGH Pride events in Spain have become large and very popular events, the Rojales LGBTI celebration which takes place on Friday June 28 is a somewhat more restrained affair. It starts at 8pm at the Replaceta del Teatro by the Rodeo Caves and features three main acts, DJ Shirra Fussion, Dammy MC and the enigmatic Greta von Killer (Lady Killer), the alter ego of Rubén González. This is scheduled to be part of the annual Moors and Christians festival in honour of patron saint San Pedro
Apóstol which features the conquest and reconquest of Moors and Christians, parades, fireworks, mass for the patron saint, procession, children’s games and sports competitions, a total of some 50 celebrations in all. The first rocket to announce the true beginning of the celebrations will be fired off on Sunday June 16 and there will be various shows and parades until Saturday June 29 when the procession of the statue of San Pedro will take place. The fun doesn’t finish with the pa-
rade and mass, but will continue in the town until July 7 and it is expected that the Charles III Bridge which has been closed for four months will be reopened especially for the festival. Visitors flock from far and wide to see local residents dressed in medieval costume re-enacting the various battles that finally saw the Moors ejected from this part of Spain. The crowning of the Queen and her princesses and attendants has already taken place with much pomp and ceremony.

Specsavers’ clinical spokesperson, Dr Nigel Best says: “Hay fever sufferers who wear contact lenses may notice the vision through their lenses can appear smeary and eyes can generally feel uncomfortable. “However, there are some things contact lens wearers can try to help reduce the irritation. “Contact lens-friendly eye drops can help to calm down any itchiness and wearing prescription glasses (particularly wraparound sunglasses) can prevent pollen from getting into your eyes. “Those suffering with hay fever could also try daily disposable lenses during the summer months.” Dr Best also recommends: “While it’s not always possible, staying inside when the pollen count is high will help to avoid irritation or showering and changing your clothes when you get home will also help to remove pollen from skin and hair.” For more advice you can visit Specsavers. Life-saving initiative ORIHUELA Town Hall has bought 35 heart defibrillators, many of which will be available to people in La Zenia, Playa Flamenca and other parts of the coast. Mayor Emilio Bascuñana, and Health councillor, Noelia Grao announced that six of the life-saving machines will be carried by Local Police cars and one by a Civil Protection vehicle so they are available anywhere in the district. The other 28 will be located in different municipal offices and facilities, including several on the coast. The town hall office in Playa Flamenca will have one, with more at the civic centre in Alameda del Mar and in Campoamar. The mayor said: “It is a day to be happy and satisfied, because we now have a more modern and safer Orihuela.
With this equipment we can quickly address any incident that might happen, but hopefully we never have to use them.” Orihuela Council has reached an agreement with Telefónica for the service. The company took on the installation and servicing of the devices, which are connected to the 112 emergency network. The contract also includes training people to use the equipment. Grao said: “These courses were given between March and April to about 300 council workers who are already prepared to use the devices if needed.” The contract signed is for five years and involves the rental of the defibrillators at a cost of €2,266 a month. “We want Orihuela to become a protected cardio space, with immediate defibrillator
assistance 24 hours a day, 365 days a year,” explained Grao. “When activated in an emergency, the device automatically alerts the 112 emergency services. While waiting for the emergency services to arrive, previously trained non-medical personnel can use the equipment.” There are also step-bystep instructions. The device performs an evaluation of the victim’s condition and in the event of cardiac arrest it applies an electric shock to restart the heart. These semi-automatic defibrillators weigh around two kilos and have the capacity to administer up to 30 shocks. The mobile teams will also have devices to automatically send alerts to emergency services in order to improve response coordination and GPS equipment to guide medics to the patients.

EU ends Spanish debt procedure
THE head of Spain’s market watchdog has said the fight against cartels in the public works contract bidding process remains a top priority. National Commission of Markets and Competition (CNMC) President Jose Maria Marin Quemada said the watchdog regularly saw companies banding together in Temporary Company Unions (UTEs) for bids. While there is no problem with UTEs in general, their use in contract bidding distort markets and undermine competition, the president added. Marin Quemada has proposed raising the €60,000 fine limit to tackle the issue.
THE European Commission (EC) has formerly requested the end of the excessive debt procedure brought against Spain in 2009 but said reduction efforts should continue. The EC’s request is pending improvement from the European Council of member states. “Once the Council adopts this decision, all procedures for excess deficits that date from the eurozone crisis will be closed,” the EC said. The decision came after Spain’s public spending deficit stood at 2.5 per cent of economic output (Gross Domestic Product, GDP) last year. It

Spanish Economy Minister Nadia Calviño said Madrid was satisfied with the EC’s decision and pledged to cut the deficit to 2 per cent of GDP by the end of 2019. The EC said there was a risk of Spain ‘significantly’ deviating from its spending targets this year and in 2020. The warning comes as the left-leaning Parido Socialista (PSOE) pledged to hike taxes and boost spending if it can re-enter government following
April’s snap general election. The EC’s announcement follows comments from its Economic Commissioner Pierre Moscovici who said about a month ago it would request the shelving of the procedure. Spain was one of 24 member states subject to the procedure in 2011 when the eurozone debt crisis was at its height. The excessive deficit procedure forms part of the EU’s Stability and Growth Pact. It states budget deficits must not exceed 3 per cent of GDP and overall public debt should not exceed 60 per cent of GDP.
Iberdrola green energy push ENERGY company Iberdrola is planning to invest more than €300 million in a new 590-megawatt solar plant in Extremadura which is set to be the biggest in Europe. The firm’s plan, which would see the 1,300-hectare site enter service in 2022 and employ about 1,000 staff, comes as part of moves towards generating more power from renewable sources. Iberdrola has also made a deal with financial company Macquarie’s Green Investment Group subsidiary to bid for a 750-megawatt offshore wind farm near the Netherlands.

EC lodges foreign asset case THE European Commission (EC) has lodged legal proceedings against Spain in the European Court of Justice (EJC) over laws requiring residents to declare assets in other EU member states. The EC said the Model 720 law, which came into force in 2012, hands down ‘disproportionate and discriminatory’ penalties to non-compliant individuals and companies.
The rules were brought in by the previous conservative Partido Popular (PP) government in a bid to curb tax fraud. The requirement also discourages residents and companies investing elsewhere in the single market, violating the freedom of movement for capital which is one of the EU’s four founding freedoms.

Bond yield at new low THE yield on 10-year bonds issued by the Spanish Treasury fell to about 0.6 per cent last week, the lowest level in a decade according to market data. Bonds were trading on markets at 0.6 per cent on Thursday. It touched 0.599 per cent at one point, the lowest level for 10-year bonds in history. The fall in the yield came as the European Commission (EC) announced it would close its excessive debt procedure for Spain. The EC placed Spain in the mechanism in 2009 following the outbreak of the financial crisis the previous year. The low yields indicate investors are now more confident that Spain can meet its debt obligations. That confidence comes as the EC said there was a risk Spain could deviate ‘significantly’ from its debt targets this year and in 2020. Yields on five-year bonds issued last week went negative on the markets, reaching -0.09 per cent. The Treasury offered investors a marginal interest rate of 0.033 per cent.

THE CEO of CaixaBank has said the banking sector has made mistakes in recent years after a recent survey found almost 70 per cent of Spanish people viewed it negatively. Gonzalo Gortazar said the reputation of banks among Spanish customers put the sustainability of the industry at risk. It comes as almost 70 per cent of respondents to LLYC’s Reputational Relevance report said they viewed banks as ‘lousy’ or ‘bad.’ Consumers said they felt banks lacked ‘social sensitivity.’ Gortazar said the sector had a bad reputation and said banks should stop complaining and instead focus on addressing the problem. “We need to make sure that the population perceives a change in the industry,” the CaixaBank CEO told an insurance sector meeting. We have the President of our greatest and strongest ally visiting, on what I considered a brilliantly selected occasion for our two countries, and this so-called contender for number 10, the leader of the opposition, who has condoned terrorist organisations and supports Communist regimes, refuses to break bread with the Queen of the realm and the leader of the free world - basically because he doesn’t like some of his policies! I mean how juvenile and utterly ridiculous can you get? This was obviously a mistake in the heat of a Q and A session, from a man who comes from a country far away that is awash with the initials of whole conglomerations of different companies. NHS could have been the title of the Nuneaton Haricot Sowing organisation for all he knew. As soon as he realised the error, the following day he made it absolutely clear that there would be no meddling in the NHS whatsoever. No, I think Trump and his extremely sophisticated First Lady, made a very favourable impression on this visit. I just hope the antics of a few utterly childish members of our so-called leaders and their motley rag tag of supporters, didn’t give him the impression that the majority of the British people all follow the same lines of infantile persuasion. I have recently sold my house in Spain, but I am told that I will have to pay the SUMA tax on it in September because the owner of the property on January 1 of each year is responsible for this tax. Could you confirm that this is true? Renting out your property in Spain touristic licence and tax liabilities Juan Ángel Álvarez-Gómez Abogado/Solicitor ON renting out your property in Spain and especially in the Valencian county (Comunidad Valenciana), you could be in one of these situations A - Renting out your property on your own. The property needs to be registered with the Valencian Touristic Department (VTD). A form must be submitted in order to get a registration number which will allow you to rent out your property legally. In such a form you have to declare you are holding the deeds for the property and the occupation licence among other documents. You do not need to submit all the referred papework along with the form, but must hold them in case of an inspection. However, there are some exceptions to the rule, ie the property does

you were non-resident in Spain rental incomes should be declared every quarter (January-March, AprilJune, July-September, October-December). Property expenses could be deducted from the related incomes
provided you were an EU citizen and you were paying for them and not the tenant. Among all those expenses you can find community fees, household insurance premiums, local rates and rubbish collection fees, TV/satellite bills, any reparations you can make in the property, etc. Water and electricity bills are also deductible though they used to be paid by the tenant, specially in long term contracts. If you were a tax resident in Spain, you do not need to make quarterly rental tax returns. Your rental incomes should be declared in your annual Income Tax returns along with your other ones (pensions, salaries, etc). In case you were resident, property expenses could be deductible in the same way as if you were non-resident, you should be an EU citizen and paying for them and not the tenant.
B - Renting out your property through an estate agent. The property also needs to be registered with the VTD, but the estate agent is the one who does it for you in case your property has not been registered before. Your estate agent should also be registered with the VTD to deal with your rentals. You must provide him with some documents from you and your property, such as your passport, NIE, title deed and occupation licence. The agent will need them either to register your property with the VTD or to rent it out on your behalf. It is also necessary for you to sign a mandate with the agent so that he can rent out your property. The property does not need to be registered with the VTD, if you had agreed with your agent that it would be only rented for a long term (five years). Tel: 608 104 498.

Keeping your dog cool during the heat JUST like humans, dogs can suffer from sunburn and heatstroke during the hot summer days, so it’s important to give them a little extra care. Dogs can cool themselves only by panting and sweating through their paw pads, so keep them in a well-ventilated place. Pets left outside should have plenty of water and access to shade, bearing
in mind the sun shifts. Pavements can get very hot in warm weather. If it’s too hot to touch with your hand, then it’s too hot for a dog’s paws. A great exercise for your pet during the hot days is swimming. Under no circumstances should dogs be left in a parked car in hot weather. On a 26ºC day the temperatures inside a shaded car is 32ºC,
and the inside of one parked in the sun can reach 70ºC. A dog showing any symptoms of heatstroke - such as restlessness, heavy panting, vomiting, tiredness or lack of coordination - should be taken to a shady spot immediately. And there are pet-friendly sunscreens that should be used on exposed areas, including nose, ears and tummy.

TECH FOR THE TIMID LAST week I paid €10 for a bargain. It cost €31 million to develop, and originally sold for €1,250 to the few privileged families who ordered and cherished it. Fulfilling a bookworm’s dream at a charity bazaar, I staggered away with 60 kg of the world’s most expensive literary creation: 30,000 pages holding 40 million words in 32 volumes, of the last edition of Encyclopaedia Britannica ever to be printed - in this case back in 1993. Given the ridiculous colonisation of household real estate it needs, my wife is seriously unimpressed. Especially considering she bought me the newer digital version of that same Britannica on one little DVD just a few years back for about the same price. In its heyday Britannica was the ultimate font of all knowledge. Forests were felled to produce up to 120,000 expensively-bound sets a year at its peak (1990). It represented man’s last, and arguably finest, attempt to collect

ALTERED STATES: ‘Hey look what I can do!’ all human knowledge in one printed repository. Then popular computing happened. In the 2000s Microsoft’s attractive Encarta knocked it from its lofty perch until it, too, succumbed to the internet. Since then nothing has been able to withstand the steamroller of the mighty ‘crowd-edited’ behemoth Wikipedia. Britannica is down but not (entirely) out. Like so much of the traditional media it pins its hopes
of survival on a website paywall, a small alternate voice in the vast Wikipedia wilderness. Other reference sites nurture similar hopes: Oxford with its famous dictionaries, specialist publishers controversially putting scientific papers behind paywalls, even struggling local newspapers hoping you will actually cough up to learn what’s happening down your street. As the new ‘font of all human knowledge’ Wikipedia seems unstoppable. Free to anyone with an
internet connection where Britannica was only for the privileged, Wikipedia is now in 300 languages with 40 million articles and 500 million visitors a month. Britannica served as the inspiration for that ultimate fictional encyclopaedia of life, the universe and everything, Encyclopedia Galactica, first conceived by sci-fi novelist Isaac Asimov back in 1951, then recycled by Robert Heinlein and Arthur C Clarke, until it appeared most famously in Douglas Adams’ fabled Hitchhiker’s Guide series. Thus Britannica begat Encarta which begat Wikipedia which may beget Galactica if humanity lasts that long, and despite it all, one thing can be certain: despite Herculean efforts, rest assured that we will never, ever, manage to collect all human knowledge together in one repository, thereby granting it a monopoly on facts. As Douglas Adams emblazoned on the cover of his own fictitious guide: ‘Don’t Panic!’

Just ask Google? THOSE of us so attached to actually owning physical works of reference are a dwindling band. Unable to afford the mammoth 24 printed volumes of the Oxford English Dictionary years ago, I shelled out handsomely for its CD version. But that too is now obsolete: pay your modest fee these days and you can look up nearly a million words on Oxford’s website. Where my computer still chokes on installed reference works, younger users just ask Google. Why, they wonder, would you buy a physical source when it’s all there at the tap of a screen in your pocket? Oh well, my sprawling Britannica does at least have one advantage over a smartphone. It’s 60 kilos. Looking stuff up is often the best exercise I get.

NOW, I am a glass half full kind of guy and I just think about how wonderful it is to live here in Spain. Earlier today my cousin spoke to me after he had returned home to Blighty yesterday, to howling winds and rain and has even lit a fire indoors. Meanwhile, I am writing this, sat in my shorts in the garden, enjoying a nice cooling breeze, a cacophony of birdsong and the scent of flowers. For lunch, I will have some really fresh fish simply grilled with a nice glass of cold white wine. People ask me, what do you miss about England, the seasons, the food, the beer? No, I really cannot think of anything. Except, if I have to go back for any reason, I think I will miss the plane! Raymond Stark

Beyond belief THE sheer number of candidates jostling for the Conservative leadership astounds me. I don’t know why anyone in their right mind would want the prime minister’s job at the moment. Missing England? EXHUMATION HALTED I READ about the halting of the moving of General Franco’s body from the Valley of the Fallen in last week’s paper ( Issue 1770) with concern. NEWS that anti-tourist graffiti appeared on the walls of Granada City last week has reignited the debate over the effects of an economically vital industry on Spanish locals. Spain’s tourism sector is the third largest contributor to the overall economy, accounting for about 10 per cent of total output (Gross Domestic Product, GDP) according to government figures. The industry is responsible for developing large swathes of the country’s Mediterranean coastline which expatriates now call home, as pictures of Benidorm from the 1950s and 1960s illustrate. Cities such as Granada also draw a hefty dividend from tourists who spend their money in local shops, bars and restaurants, benefiting the wider economy. The traffic of travellers into Spain has also helped to build bonds across borders and break down misconceptions held by tourists and locals about each other and their countries. But as with all aspects of the economy, the gains are seldom shared equally and the price of success for some is suffering for others. The Canary and Balearic Islands are both home to anti-tourism movements who argue the industry has led to overdevelopment, harming their homes and the environment. In Barcelona the rise of holiday rentals has seen residents priced or even turfed out of neighbourhoods where they grew up because of the lure of profits from tourism. If tensions are to be eased then the benefits from the industry must be more widely shared and the impact on locals reduced.

PROTECTION: Look after your skin in intense heat.
Staying safe in the sun HERE in Spain, the sun is intense and to remain healthy, it is essential to take precautions. Always use sunscreen, even on cloudy days. Choose a good sunscreen to guard against both UVA and UVB radiation, with an SPF of 30 or preferably higher. Remember to apply thoroughly and then re-apply the lotion at regular intervals and always apply more after going into the water. Cover up. It is always advisable to wear a hat in strong sun, preferably a wide
brimmed hat. Sunglasses with UV protection for the eyes and when out and about you should be wearing long trousers and sleeves. Seek shade. When spending any length of time outside, aim to stay in the shade. Keep an umbrella or pop-up beach tent in the car to have ready if shade isn’t available. Mad dogs and Englishmen. Since UV radiation is a top contributor to melanoma skin cancer, aim to avoid outdoor activities during the sun’s peak intensity around lunchtime.
Drink plenty. Be sure to always stay hydrated, and avoid too much alcohol, it is actually a diuretic and will dehydrate you, if you drink too much. Beware of medications. Many modern prescription medications can cause sun sensitivity. Always check with your doctor or pharmacist. Moderation is key for vitamin D. Yes it is important to get some sunlight on the body to make sure your body produces Vitamin D. But research shows a mere 10 minutes of sun exposure daily enough.

So self-love is not included here, that kind of self-love that we need so much in our life. Without it people may feel lost and may feel the need for others to fill in that gap. Do not blame yourself. You have probably never learned how to love yourself. I will write some guidelines how to start loving yourself (more) in forthcoming columns. In this week’s column I want to tell you that all the inspiration, all the power you need in your life is within yourself and therefore first of all you have to love yourself. Imagine what your life would be like if you really loved yourself, if you could fully plug into your own power starting doing
those things ‘you’ would like and love to do. It’s your life. Not someone else’s life (any more). The life inspirer you are looking for is within you in the first place. So what you can do already today is just tell yourself, even out loud if you can, that you really love yourself. And together with this put a big smile on your face. Make it positive. It does not matter at this stage that you do not know exactly how to deeply love yourself. Just by saying it your brain will already get into a positive mode. Do this a few times a day. Make it a habit, like eating, drinking and sleeping. Make it a daily routine. I am sure things will already start to change in your life in an inspiring way.

How you should be washing your hair WE grew up being told to wash our hair every day, and later learned we should probably only wash it a couple of times a week to maintain natural oils. Washing your hair properly can make a huge difference to its health, shine and condition. Making common mistakes could be damaging your hair without you even realising it. Here are some tips on how to wash your hair the right way: • First of all, make sure you are using the right shampoo and conditioner for your hair type. • Start by rinsing your hair, preferably with warm water. Hair should be properly wet before applying any products. • Condition the ends first if you have long hair (past your shoulders). This will protect fragile ends from drying out and further damage. • Apply shampoo - only at the scalp and don’t use too much. • Be gentle when massaging the shampoo into the roots. If you are too rough, you can permanently damage your hair’s
cuticle, leading to breakage and frizz. Don’t use circular motions, as this can tangle hair. • Smooth the lather from the shampoo over the ends of your hair in a stroking motion. • Rinse with warm water. • Don’t shampoo your hair again unless your hair is really dirty and the first wash didn’t produce lather. • Condition from the midlengths to the tips of your hair. Squeeze some of the water out before conditioning. After applying the conditioner, clip your hair up and finish showering. Then rinse the conditioner out. The longer you leave the conditioner on your hair the better. Never put conditioner on your roots as it can make it greasy. • Rinse with cold water to shut the cuticle. How many times a week should you wash your hair? It depends on your hair type. If you have oily fine hair, you may need to shampoo daily. Normal or dry hair may need to be washed three times a week.

Best for children (and dogs) GIJON is the best place in Spain to visit with children, according to National Geographic. “There are so many places where children can have a great time and two are linked to water,” the magazine found. As well as the Gijon’s thermal baths, children should enjoy the Aquarium located in the
same Poniente area with interactive areas and enclosures where they can touch sole, sea cucumbers, otters and penguins amongst other creaturs. National Geographic also recommended a trip to the Railway Museum: “Great for children who have never seen a steam engine,” the article commented.
The magazine also found this coastal city on the Bay of Biscay good for dog owners. Gijon has more than 50,000 dogs and there is a dogs-permitted beach as well as hundreds of parks where they are allowed, a feature that National Geographic pointed out is increasingly important for family holidays.

Faro and its hidden Algarve gems THE capital of the southern Algarve region is usually used merely as a city to pass through. But Faro, with its cobbled archways and Moorish architecture, is a distinctly Portuguese coastal city with plenty on offer. Ideal as a stop off spot, the underrated Algarve resort is less than four and a half hours from Malaga by car and is one of the most southerly points in Portugal. The monumental Arco da Vila archway belies the city’s Moorish influences - along with the original Moorish wall, of course. The white lighthouse, though, is probably the city’s most recognisable landmark. Other parts of the city are undoubtedly less attractive on the eye. But when you are partying with the near 10,000 strong student population on one of many lively nights out,

During the days, the historic old town is packed with outdoor cafes and well-maintained squares, while sophisticated tourists may appreciate the theatre offerings. The Ria Formosa Natural Park is nearby, boasting lagoons and mudflats. Attractive parks, intriguing museums, chapels and a 13th century cathedral make for an engaging stroll, but really it is all about sand, sun and sea.
Situated on the North Atlantic coast, Faro has an impressive marina and a number of attractive beaches in touching distance. For those who need a little more stimulation, a number of undeveloped nearby islands make for hidden gems and are almost undoubtedly the best day-tripping options around. Elsewhere, a 16th century convent has been turned into a museum featuring medieval and prehistoric artefacts, alongside religious art.

What’s the tax you have to pay? SOME things are unavoidable in life. Tax is one of them, although it must be said that in years gone by many people did seem to get away with not paying it when it came to property sales in Spain. Despite the stories you may have heard about the ‘wild west’ days of yore, it is advisable not to try to evade what you are due to pay these days. The taxman is highly likely to catch up with you, and then it can become very expensive indeed. So, when buying or selling what taxes do you need to pay? Here is a brief guide of what you may be liable for. When buying a home all people (private individuals, not companies which have different regulations) must pay: I VA ( VAT ) : T h i s i s
levied in new builds, generally those homes bought direct from a developer. It is charged at 10 per cent of the sale value, which should be listed in the title deed. Non-residents taxation can be complicated (particularly if you are a non-EU citizen, so professional advice is highly recommended. When selling a property, the main tax to be aware of is Plusvalia which is raised on the increase in the rateable value of the property combined with the number of years since it last changed hands. One found where are the others? NICK HORNE’S Morning Read Freelance correspondent, London, England OFF the west coast of Scotland lies the Isle of Lewis and reputedly hidden in the 12th or 13th centuries by a passing ivory merchant was a hoard of chess pieces. Enough pieces to make up four complete sets of chess except for one Knight and four Warders. The hoard was discovered and the long lost treasure consisted of 93 objects. Of these, 82 are at the British Museum in London with the remainder in the collection of the National Museum of Scotland. The location of the remaining five pieces remains unknown. On July 2, 2019 what appears to be an additional piece from the Lewis Hoard, the first to be discovered since 1831 comes up for auction. It appears in the Ledger of an Edinburgh antique dealer in 1964 as an ‘Antique Walrus Tusk Warrior’ recording the purchase of the Warder. According to a family spokesman: “It can be assumed that he (the owner) was unaware he had purchased an important historic artefact. It was stored away in his home and then when my grandfather died my mother inherited the chess piece. “My mother was very fond of the Chessman

She believed that it was special and thought perhaps it could even have some magical significance. For many years it resided in a drawer in her home where it had been carefully wrapped in a small bag. From time to time she would remove the chess piece from the drawer in order to appreciate its uniqueness.” The origins of the Lewis Chessmen probably lie in Trondheim in Norway, a centre for the carving of chessmen in the 12th and 13th centuries. The good condition of the pieces and their lack of wear supports the theory that they were, at the time they were lost, the stock of a trader in chessmen who did not return to

their resting place to recover them. Scholars have advance competing theories, however, this one appears to have the strongest claim. In any case, collectively they are a significant symbol of European civilisation. Neil Macgregor, a past director of the British Museum, included the Lewis Chessmen amongst his selection of ‘The History of the World in 100 Objects.’ He said that “if we want to visualise European society round the year 1200, we could hardly do better than look at how they play chess. And no chess pieces offer richer insights than the Lewis chessmen.” The warders who made up the Hoard are of
two types, the majority are bearded with a sword in their right hand and shields either at their left side or in front. Three are shown biting the tops of their shields, marking them out as representation of those legendary Norse warriors known as Berserkers. “The whole world is like a chess board, of which one square is white and another black” wrote the Franciscan John of Wales, “following the dual state of life and death, praise and blame.” The society - familia - of this chessboard are men of this world who are all taken from a common bag and placed in different parts of this world and, as with individuals, have different names. One is called king, another queen, a third rook, a fourth knight and a fifth alphin (bishop), with a sixth called pawn.” Which of the men and women of the world will bid to acquire this piece, a chess Warder lost to the world for more than seven centuries. BMW and Jaguar Land Rover partnership By Dilip Kuner IN one of the more surprising-yet-unsurprising moves in the car industry BMW and Jaguar Land Rover have announced a collaboration to develop the next generation of electric drive systems. It is surprising news in that both manufacturers have already invested huge sums in pioneering technology, but unsurprising in that it is clear even the biggest companies can’t afford to develop the next generation of electric technology on their own. When it comes down to it the move is all about money. Sharing knowledge, research, development engineering and suppliers will save vast sums by avoiding duplication and generating economies of scale. The deal encompasses electric drive systems, including the motors and operating software.
Nick Rogers, Jaguar Land Rover engineering director said: “The transition to Autonomous, Connected, Electric and Shared (ACES) represents the greatest technological shift in the automotive industry in a generation. “The pace of change and consumer interest in electrified vehicles is gathering real momentum and it’s essential we work across industry to advance the technologies required to deliver this exciting future. “We’ve proven we can build world beating electric cars, but now we need to scale the technology to support the next generation of Jaguar and Land Rover products. It was clear from discussions with BMW Group that both companies’ requirements for next generation EDUs to support this transition have significant overlap making for a mutually beneficial collaboration.” Klaus Fröhlich, Member of the Board of Management of BMW AG,

Abarth 124 GT ROAD TEST by Nick Fletcher ABARTH is a performance car brand established 70 years ago and is now part of the giant Fiat Group, though the latest Abarth is a stand-alone sports model without any Fiat badges and establishes its own distinct identity. The Abarth 124 GT is a classic rear-wheel-driven two-seater sports car with a 168 hp turbo-petrol engine - 30 hp more than in Fiat’s own 124GT version - a n d i s l i g h t e r, h a s firmer suspension and a limited-slip differential for greater traction.
The result is that the manual-gearbox Abarth has a zesty 0-100 kph time of 6.8 seconds and top speed of 232 kph (144 m p h ) . Ye t a v e r a g e f u e l economy is still impressive at 15.6 kpl (44.1 mpg), with emissions of 148 g/km. Automatic transmission with paddleshifters is also available. Back to the future GORDON MURRAY could be said to be going back to the future with the design of his latest supercar. Dubbed the T.50, it has been conceived as the spiritual successor to the iconic Murraydevised McLaren F1. Murray has promised that it will be the ‘purest, lightest, most driver-focused supercar ever built.’ To achieve this target the design team has focused on weight and aerodynamics - and this is where a throwback to Formula 1 in the 1990s comes in, although updated for a modern road car. Uniquely, the supercar will feature a 400mm ground-effect fan, similar to that on Murray’s famous Brabham BT46B Formula 1 ‘Fan Car.’ This was so good the technology was banned as being ‘against the rules.’ Some readers may remember the secrecy that enveloped the Brabham, with the distinctly low-tech device of a dustbin lid at times used to hide the
high-tech innovation from prying eyes in the pit lane. The Gordon Murray Automotive team has established a new technical partnership with a Formula One team, which will make its rolling-road wind tunnel available to develop the aerodynamics of the T.50. The development of T.50 is at an advanced stage, with full production and customer deliveries set to commence in early 2022. Just 100 owners of the T.50 will experience Murray’s vision - a supercar inspired by his 50 years at the top of Formula One and automotive industry engineering and design. They will have to pay ‘in excess’ of €2.2 million plus taxes for the privilege. volved an investment of just over €31 million and it will boost the productivity thanks to greater automation and manufacturing speed, as well as an advanced robot system. A little over €25 million was also invested in two new hot stamping lines that will also help increase efficiency, speed and precision in the production process. In addition to this overall €57 million investment, in the past five years SEAT has allocated €6.5 million to improving, renovating and modernising the plant. SEAT Vice-President for Production and Logistics Dr Christian Vollmer said: “SEAT Barcelona is a key factory for our company and these new facilities will enable us to position it as a technologically strategic plant for SEAT and the Volkswagen
Group. The new metal press and the new stamping lines will help us increase our production output by 15 per cent, to close to 60 million parts.” The SEAT factory located in Barcelona’s Zona Franca began operating in 1953 with the production of the brand’s initial models, such as the SEAT 1400 or the 600, the car that put Spain on wheels. In 1993, vehicle production was shifted to the Martorell factory, and since then, the Barcelona facilities have been producing stamped parts such as doors, roofs, mudguards and cross bars. About 80 per cent of the parts for the MQB A0 platform and most of the stamped parts on SEAT models are also made in these facilities. In 2018 and were exported to 22 factories located in six countries.

World Cup bid launched If successful, this would be the second time Spain has hosted the competiton - the first time was in 1982. Portugal has never held the finals, but did host the 2004 European Championship. The countries put in a joint bid for the 2018 tournament, but lost out to Russia. Spain, the 2010 world champions, hosted the 1982 World Cup and launched a failed bid along with Portugal to stage the 2018 tournament which was awarded to Russia. Portugal has never hosted the World Cup, but held the 2004 European Championship. Morocco has tried five times to host the tournament, failing each time. It lost out to the United States, Mexico and Canada for the 2026 competition. A joint bid by Argentina, Uruguay, Chile and Paraguay for the 2030 tournament has also been announced. It will mark the centenary of the competition, which was first hosted by Uruguay in 1930.
By Dilip Kuner SPAIN and Portugal have started to investigate a joint venture to host the 2030 football World Cup, but they seem to have dropped Morocco, which was originally thought to be part of the bid. At a meeting in Porto (Portugal) representatives of the countries’ football federations said in a joint statement: “After holding several meetings, the football federations of Spain and Portugal can confirm that they are set to begin an in-depth analysis of the possibility of presenting a joint bid to host the 2030 World Cup. “Both federations would like to take this opportunity to state that the governments of both countries have been properly informed about this process, given that they will have a key part to play in its development.” But there was no mention of Morocco. Last year Spanish PM Pedro Sanchez had suggested a three-way bid during a visit to the country. With the expansion of the finals tournament to 48 teams it had been suggested spreading the load across three nations was the best way to proceed.

RAFAEL NADAL not only took his 12th Roland Garros title on Sunday, but he also took the lead in the battle for the year-end No 1 ATP Ranking from Novak Djokovic. Nadal passed Djokovic in the ATP Race To London with 5,505 points, taking a 780point advantage over the second-placed Serbian (4,725). It is the third consecutive year in which Nadal has led the Race after the season’s second Grand Slam, and he has fittingly won the title on the Parisian clay on each occasion. This sets the stage for what could be an exciting battle for the yearend No 1 ATP Ranking. This is the closest the Race has been between the top two players after Roland Garros since 2012, when Nadal led Djokovic by 630 points after claiming his seventh trophy in Paris. In 2017, Nadal led second-placed Roger Federer by 2,870 points and last season, he was ahead of second-placed Alexander Zverev by 1,545 points. Nadal is now in a strong position to make a run for his fifth year-end finish (2008, ‘10, ‘13, ‘17) atop the ATP Rankings. Nadal would join Djokovic,

At the moment they are 31 points ahead of the second Toyota in the standings. But this has led to pitlane gossip that Alonso will turn away from WEC having achieved everything in the series in order to concentrate on Indy Car racing and his hunt to collect the Indianapolis 500
