Un-looky looky fine A FOREIGN tourist has become the first person to fall victim to a crackdown on illegal street vendors when he was fined €100 for buying from a looky looky man. Plain clothes officers had launched a surveillance operation on Calle Pare Bartomeu Salvà (Platja de Palma). But rather than directing their uniformed colleagues to the ‘looky looky’ men they targeted the tourist, whose nationality is unknown. A new by-law makes it possible to fine people for buying from illegal street traders, with fines ranging between €100 and €750, potentially making that ‘bargain’ a very expensive option. In this case police decided on the lowest possible amount as it was the first time the penalty had been given. He was not made to pay on the spot, and will have to pay it later. Police warn that they will be paying special attention to street trading throughout the summer and warn people not to buy items except from licensed tradesmen. The new Ordinance Regulating the Civic Use of Public Space also provides for fines for people who practise ‘bal-

Nazi-era chants shock A SHOCKED traveller has called for action to be taken after a group of men on a flight to Palma from Berlin started chanting Nazi-era racist slogans. Many of the German men were also wearing shirts bearing far-right and Nazi phrases. Eliza Zenck took a video which appears to show the men chanting words including ‘Du Zigeuner’ - a term used by Nazis in the holocaust to describe Romany Gypsies. Speaking to The Independent website she said there were “at least 30 drunk men, who were wearing t-shirts with the inscriptions ‘Division Mallorca - power through joy’ as well as ‘European Brotherhood’.” She added: “‘I talked to one of the cabin crew, and she said
every plane from Berlin to Mallorca in the summer is like that.” Eliza said that the men’s behaviour led to a tense atmosphere on the flight, with other passengers rushing to get off as soon as possible on landing. She said: “The airline and the airport need to do something. It’s a policy issue.” A Ryanair spokesman said: “We sincerely regret any misbehaviour by a small group of passengers on board this flight. The group stopped singing when requested to do so by our cabin crew.” SLOGANS: Passengers allegedly chanted racist phrases on Ryanair flight.
Good from tragedy SINCE human organs first started to be donated in the Balearic Islands in 1990 there have been 36 children’s donations, nearly a quarter from foreign youngsters. On last week’s National Donor Day the Ministry of Health wanted to thank the parents of young donors, saying that from the tragedy of children’s deaths - usually in road accidents - some good can come.

Lucky break POLICE have described a British tourist as lucky after he survived an eight-metre fall with just a broken ankle. Calvia Local Police were called to the scene in Calle Punta Ballena, Magaluf, fearing the worst after reports of a man plunging from a complex’s walkway. When they arrived they found the 18-year-old British man relatively unscathed from what could easily have been a fatal incident. Police say the drunk victim was taken to Son Espases hospital. A few days previously a Finnish tourist was not so lucky. He was taken to hospital in a critical condition after a three-metre fall in the same resort.
PALMA’S port is one of the most polluted ports in Europe when it comes to the effects of cruise ships on air quality. The city’s place as a destination for liners takes it alongside Barcelona, Venice, Civitacecchia and Southampton according to a new report by the Transport & Environment federation, which analysed air pollution caused by luxury passenger ships in European waters. According to the study, t h e s h i p s o f t h e w o r l d ’s largest cruise operator, Carnival Corporation, emitted 10 times more sulphur dioxide in Europe alone in 2017 than the 260 million passenger vehicles circulating in Europe. Tr a n s p o r t & E n v i r o n ment’s director of transport policy, Faig Abbasov, said: “While cities are banning the circulation of diesel cars to reduce the pollution breathed by their population, they are giving free rein to shipping companies, which cause large concentrations of pollutants with a high risk to the health of their passengers and the populations closest to the cruise terminals. Region celebrates THIS picture of the Santa Maria Cathedral in Murcia comes as the city’s region celebrates is annual holiday this Monday (June 10). The Murcia Region covers an area of about 11,313 square kilometres, about 2.2 per cent of the Spanish landmass. It is home to almost 1.5 million people, roughly a third of which live in its capital, Murcia City. The region has a warm, arid climate and water transfers from nearby rivers have supported its farming industry. It is home to the Mar Menor lagoon, a 170-square-kilometre body of
water known for its diverse marine life. Ancestors of modern-day humans have inhabited what is now the Murcia Region for around one million years. Phoenician settlers from North Africa arrived in the 3rd century BC and founded a city which the Romans named Cartago Nova after their conquest of the Iberian Peninsula. The modern-day city of Cartagena stands on its site. The area was later ruled by the Visigoths and then the Islamic Moors
during the Middle Ages, before becoming the independent Kingdom of Murcia in the 11th century. The region fell to the Kingdom of Castile in 1243. The region grew economically in following years and enjoyed a mining boom in the 19th century. Cartagena was a key Spanish naval base from the 16th century onwards. Work on the Santa Maria Cathedral (pictured) finished in 1465 after beginning in 1394. The 90-metre-tall bell tower was built between 1521 and 1791.
Less people GOVERNMENT figures recently released show that unemployment on the Balearic Islands fell 13.04 per cent from April to May, with 5,833 less people unemployed. Though these figures are encouraging, there were only 171 less people out of work, when compared to May 2018.
Witness dies A WITNESS in a criminal trial being heard in Palma has died. The man, who was about to give evidence, suddenly collapsed after experiencing chest pains and despite the efforts to resuscitate him, he was pronounced dead. A heart attack is suspected, but an autopsy will determine the cause.

Prison drama FIVE prison warders were injured when they had to subdue a radical Islamist inmate who was reportedly trying to kill a fellow prisoner with a home-made knife. So violent was the Palestinian that other prisoners being held in a special unit for ‘conflictive’ offenders joined in to help the officers pin down and control him. Warders were alerted that a very violent inmate with a long history of prison incidents had got hold of a knife - which was made from

metal tubing and a screwdriver and was attempting to kill a fellow prisoner. When he was finally subdued, he was transferred to solitary confinement, but once there he attacked officials again with kicks and punches and trying to bite them. Of the five officers injured, one had to be taken to hospital, as did the inmate himself. The offender is serving a jail term until 2028 for multiple offences.

Bin remand A MAN remains in prison accused of being the main instigator of a wave of fires in Palma that has left 371 rubbish bins destroyed. The 58-year-old is at the moment accused of setting 14 fires that destroyed 36 bins, damaged 11 cars and affected the facades of four buildings. A judge has set bail at €100,000. He was arrested in Sunday after a surveillance operation. At the time the non-smoker was carrying three lighters. In January, a 39-year-old man was arrested as the alleged perpetrator of at least four container fires in S’Arenal. In April, two other men, aged 48 and 51, were arrested and charged with burning two containers, in s’Escorxador. Four hours after the latest arrest a bin in La Soledat was set alight.

Cruise control PALMA has become a victim of its own success when it comes to welcoming cruise ships to the islands. The busy port is a favourite stop for cruise companies, but this brings problems with congestion in the city in the peak season. So now the new legislature is looking at ways of encouraging smaller ships to dock at alternative Balearic ports in order to spread the load and share out the economic benefit.
Director general of Ports and Airports, Xavier Ramis called on all levels of government to “study this matter in depth, because the arrival of cruise passengers to the Balearic Islands is necessary and we must avoid the overcrowding that occurs at times in Palma, despite the improvements introduced. To do this, we must diversify the arrival of ships and shipping companies should include in their schedules other islands ports.”

Stairway to jail POLICE have arrested a pensioner who allegedly pushed his ex-partner down the stairs, breaking her nose and wrist in the process. hand said it was an accident, and lay down next to her to show how they had both lost their balance and fallen, although he was completely uninjured. Unconvinced by his explanation, police brought him before a judge on Sunday who remanded him in custody on charges of gender violence.

Doorman faces prison ILLEGAL doormen, working in Palma’s nightclubs and bars are coming under the spotlight as a third doorman is facing criminal charges. In the latest trial, it is alleged a doorman punched a customer after he had lost a jacket in the club. The victim suffered a fractured skull and shattered jaw, which required surgery. In this case, the prosecutor is asking for the doorman to be jailed for 18 months and ordered to pay over €3,000 in compensation. In a previous case, a doorman received a sentence of five years in prison for assaulting a member of the public.
Suicide attempt AFTER a violent argument with his wife, a man, who was armed with a replica revolver then allegedly tried to attack an Emergency Doctor at the Inca Health Centre in Palma, with a bottle. The man subsequently evaded capture by the police and went back to his farm, where he climbed onto the roof and tried to hang himself. Although the man was close to death on being found, medics at the scene managed to revive him and get him to hospital, where he is recovering. The Guardia Civil are investigating the series of events.

FOR SALE: Michael Douglas has put his estate on the market.
A costly bargain by Dilip Kuner SOMETIMES you have to be realistic when you want to sell your house, as actor Michael Douglas has realised as he reduces the price tag on his Mallorcan villa by €21.1 million. He originally put s’Estaca up for sale in 2014 at a whopping €50 million. Over the years he has failed to find anyone willing to pay that sort of money, and so has gradually brought down the asking price.
It can hardly be described as cut-price though, as it is now being marketed at €28.9 million. The estate has seven buildings containing five apartments with 10 separate rooms and sleeps up to 20 people. The main buildings are built on a 1,000 sqm plot of land with 100 hectares of land with vines and olives. The actor has also lent his voice to a promotional video in which he explains the history of the estate, which began when Archduke Lluis Salvador bought a
piece of land on the west coast of Mallorca ‘to start creating a magical retreat’ in the 19th century. Douglas says he “fell in love with Mallorca, very different from the formality of the Royal Court of Vienna. Empress Sisí of Austria visited him many times on the Archduke’s private boat, anchored in front of S’Estaca in the protected port of Sa Foradada.” The property was acquired by Douglas and his then wife, Diandra Lucker, in 1989 for ‘just’ €4 million.

Brexit reassurance THE British Consul General, Lloyd Milen, has reassured Balearics Government Vice President, Bel Busquets, that Brexit poses no risk to British tourism. He was speaking at a meeting where they were launching this year’s #trav elaware campaign to fight ‘uncivil tourism’ that is such a headache both to the UK and Spanish authorities. Mr Milen said that the strength of the British economy means that British tourists will continue holidaying in Spain, saying: “It seems that there is no effect on tourism.” A low unemployment rate of 4 per cent in the United Kingdom, allows its citizens to continue making plans to travel, while “the important thing is that the season is extended,” added the consul. Flights delayed EIGHTY-SEVEN baggage handlers at Son Sant Joan airport have had their right to free and discounted air tickets reinstated by the Supreme Court. Acciona took over ground handling from Iberia in 2012 but refused to honour an agreement to maintain the perk as it is not an airline. The workers have spent years fighting in the courts to have free tickets reinstated, having won a previous case in 2015. Acciona appealed to the Supreme Court, but on losing the case will now have to compensate handlers for seven years’ worth of flights.

Facing jail A FORMER school assistant faces 28 years in jail for a series of sex crimes against children. The Public Prosecutor’s Office accuses him of several crimes of continued sexual abuse, possession of child pornography and degrading treatment of children. As well as the jail term, the prosecutor wants an order for €30,000 compensation for the victims to be made. The prosecutor also says the school involved and insurance company Cáser should be held liable for further compensation. The accused, identified as Samuel AR, worked from 2015 as a caretaker as well as overseeing religious and extracurricular activities including theatre, catechisms and canteen work. He is accused of abusing children under the age of 11 both at school and at home over a prolonged period. He has been held in custody since his arrest in March 2018.

British girl raped POLICE are investigating after an unidentified man raped a holidaying 15-yearold British girl in a hotel sauna. The attack happened in Llucmajor, Mallorca after the girl, who was staying in the hotel with her parents, went alone to the accommodation’s sauna when the man approached her. According to sources
from the Armando Institute to Europa Press the rape has been medically confirmed after gynaecological examination. A full investigation is ongoing and the hotel staff have been questioned to try to identify the mystery attacker. Police have not yet released a description of the assailant.

Crack down A POLICE operation to crack down on crime in general and thefts from cars at Mallorcan beauty spots is bearing results. Guardia Civil arrested last weekend three men at a car park in the Tramunta mountains near the Cuber reservoir. They had been seen to be acting suspiciously, so officers kept a close eye on them. When one of them was spotted trying to break into a vehicle while the other two kept watch, police moved in and made the arrests. A search of their car uncovered suspected stolen goods and cash. A court has since released the three with charges, and one has been ordered to stay away from Escora viewing points.

By Joe Gerrard SPAIN marked one year since the left-leaning Partido Socialista (PSOE) took power following a successful motion of no confidence, with the party again reaching out to build a majority. PSOE’s Meritxell Batet, the new President of the Congress of Deputies, met with King Felipe on Monday to open talks on reaching a settlement among lawmakers. The two will also seek a path for acting Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez to stay on in the post as per Constitutional arrangements for choosing governments following elections. In echoes of manoeuvres which brought Sanchez and the PSOE to power a year ago, the support of some smaller, regionalist parties will be needed for an absolute majority. PSOE is in a stronger position following the recent rounds of elections which left it the largest party in the Cortes by a margin. The party may be able to rid itself from a dependence on pro-

DEALS: PSOE is seeking a working majority in Congress. Catalan independence groups which effectively brought down his minority government earlier this year. The party’s claim to power is also strengthened by positive EU election results and a broadly successful showing in local and regional elections. Some of the regional groups who helped Sanchez oust his con-
servative Partido Popular (PP) predecessor Mariano Rajoy have signalled they will work with him again. The Basque Partido Nacionalista Vasco (PNV) has said it would be willing to support PSOE. But its condition is thought to be that PSOE rules out working with the centrist Ciudadanos, who they see as a
threat to their demands for greater self-rule. This shows that Sanchez and PSOE will have to navigate their way through a tangled web of demands, animosities and rivalries to build a working majority. The path looked smoother prior to the May elections when it looked likely that PSOE would strike a deal with the leftist Podemos. But that party’s poor showing in those elections robbed them of their leverage, freeing up PSOE to consider more options. The most straightforward option for Sanchez remains working with Ciudadanos. The two parties have a combined total of 180 seats in Congress, four more than is needed for a majority. But there is little appetite for the pact amongst PSOE members and, as the case of PNV shows, Sanchez would risk alienating other parties.

Psychosis conference PSYCHIATRIC patients, their families and doctors met in Barcelona yesterday (Wednesday June 5) for a conference on addressing mental illnesses. The first Psychosis Hackathon saw attendees discuss ways of using technology to deal with mental illness.
Early intervention, eliminating the stigma around psychosis and making treatment more personal were all discussed. There are around 400,000 people in Spain currently diagnosed with schizophrenia, according to official figures.
It is believed to be a case of ‘revenge porn,’ sex videos of someone shared by ex-partners without their permission. Rivera’s comments drew fire from social media users. Irene Montero, a senior member of the leftist Podemos, said: “We women have to be coy and careful how we behave, because a man can’t see a video ‘like this’ and not share it. That’s not naive idiocy, it’s the kind of logic that blames women in order to hide sexism.”

Driving licences in Spain LIVING in Spain can bring with it an array of issues which may not have been encountered when living in the UK. If you are planning on living in Spain on a permanent basis, it’s a good idea to have a Spanish driving licence - in fact it is mandatory after a while. Here are some guidelines for current and new drivers on how to do this quickly and easily. If you already have a valid EU (European Union) Community or an EEA (European Economic Area) driving licence and meet the minimum driving age in Spain, you can use it for the first two years of residence in Spain, although you must register your details with the traffic authorities after six months. You can register at your Central Register of Drivers and Minor Offenders of the Provincial Traffic Headquarters. Once the process is under way, you will have to adhere to the same conditions as Spanish licence holders: Have reached minimum age in Spain for the specific category of vehicle you want to drive, Relevant medical checks, Renew or exchange the licence after the first two years’ residence in Spain. If an EU licence is renewed in Spain it effectively converts it into a Spanish EU licence, which then needs to be renewed every 10 years up to the age of 65, and every five years after 65. The new regulation which requires new residents to exchange their licences for a Spanish one, was enforced three years ago. As such, Spain has agreements with more than 20 countries, allowing drivers to exchange a foreign driver’s licence for its equivalent. To exchange your licence, you will need to fill out an application form that is issued by the Provincial Traffic Headquarters. (See the above website). The following documents will be required: Proof of identity (original passport and a copy), Proof of your residence for six months (Certificate of Registration in the Central Aliens Register - the NIE number), Application form (in Spanish), Current valid driving licence to be exchanged (original and a copy), Written declaration stating that you don’t have another driving licence of the same class in another country, Written declaration stating that you have not been suspended or banned, Two recent passport size photographs (32 by 25 mm), Medical fitness report (visit the DGT website for information). For new drivers, check the legal driving ages and permit types before you register. You can get details depending on what type of vehicle you want to drive by visiting: English-driving-school.com. The best option (for new drivers) is to go to a driving school as they take care of the registration process with the Jefatura (Jefatura Provincial de Trafico) on your behalf. Once you have registered, get your medical and vision test done, too. Theory tests can be done in a classroom or be computer based. By Joe Gerrard PARLIAMENTARY wrangling over Brexit has been temporarily put on the back-burner while the ruling Conservatives select their new leader, but proposals from contenders indicate how things could progress. There is currently a crowded field of candidates hoping to bag the party’s top job and the keys to 10 Downing Street. A total of 13 candidates are standing, with all having held some previous ministerial experience. The debate surrounding the race has already been moved in a hard Brexit direction. This is largely down to the mood among Conservative members who are by and large in favour of Britain leaving the EU. About 59 per cent of members voted for Nigel Farage’s Brexit Party in recent European Parliament elections, according to a YouGov poll. Those roughly 124,000 members will choose from the two most popular candidates after a series of run-off votes amongst Conservative MPs.
Glimpsing the future The discussion has quickly turned to what is likely to be a red line for many members, the attitude of each candidate towards a no-deal Brexit. Current frontrunner Boris Johnson, former Brexit Secretary Dominic Raab, ex-Leader of the House of Commons Andrea Leadsom and others have
said they would be prepared to leave without a deal. International Development Secretary Rory Stewart was the only candidate to rule that eventuality out, while former Universities Minister Sam Gyimah said he would hold a second referendum. Virtually all the candidates

FINANCE Investing in renewables
THE head of the Acciona infrastructure and energy company has said it will continue to invest in clean power and hopes to expand its output. Jose Manuel Entrecanales told a meeting of company shareholders that Acciona plans to go from a total renewable output of 1,600 megawatts to 2,000 megawatts in the next 18 months. “Acciona will contribute to efforts to invest in renewables in Spain,” said Entrecanales. The president of the company said changes to regulations and positive results from reviews of asset remuneration made the investments possible.

‘Not ready’ for next crisis A FORMER senior economic analyst at Spain’s central bank has said the country is ill-equipped to face another crisis like the one which struck the world in 2008. Former Bank of Spain Studies Director Jose Luis Malo de Molina said imbalances and risks were not addressed following the 2008 financial crisis and subsequent recession. “We are not prepared to absorb shocks like those seen in 2008. What happened during the crisis can happen again,” Malo de Molina said. The economist was speaking at the launch of his book ‘A Macroeconomic

needed now while outlook remains positive. “You have to repair the roof while the sun is shining,” Calviño said. Calviño also commented on recent remarks from the Bank of Spain about the lack of savings among Spanish families. “If they cannot survive on their pay until the end of the month then they cannot save,” the minister said. It comes as central bank governor Pablo Hernandez de Cos said whichever parties take power following recent elections needed to face economic challenges promptly and decisively.
A TRADE UNION has accused Spain’s central bank of having an ‘unhealthy obession’ with the economic consequences of a planned minimum wage hike. The UGT said the Bank of Spain’s belief that an increase in the rate to €900 per month would negatively impact on job creation was harming its collective bargaining efforts. It comes as the central bank said in a report that it could not rule out job losses in the event the increase goes ahead. The wage rise was first floated in government budget plans.

CEC slam ‘threatening’ tax tone AN association of small and medium sized companies has accused the Spanish Treasury of sending letters about tax with a ‘threatening’ tone to some firms. The Spanish Confederation of Commerce (CEC) said small businesses with low turnover had received the letters warning them about inconsistencies in tax returns. It comes as retail sales have risen by 2 per cent but
small and medium sized firms have seen a drop of 0.5 per cent. CEC General Secretary Jose Guerrero said: “Owners are struggling to move their businesses forward. The last thing we need is a sword of Damocles over our heads.” The CEC is working ‘intensely’ to ensure small and medium sized companies can adapt to new consumer habits which have driven a rise in online sales.
Huawei 5G rollout CHINESE technology company Huawei is still set to put Spain’s new 5G network into place despite a ban on the company doing so in the US, according to the CEO of its Spanish division Tony Jin Yong.
New CEO IGOR GARZESI has been appointed the new CEO of Banco Mediolanum and has pledged to put the bank in an ‘unbeatable’ position after replacing Vittorio Colussi following a unanimous decision from the company’s board.
Scooter use MORE than one million trips have been made by around 300,000 unique users on Lime scooters since the company began operating in the cities of Pamplona, Madrid, Malaga, Valencia and Zaragoza, leading to reduction in emissions of 210,000 kilograms of CO2, according to company estimates.

Euro EUR/GBP: Up from £0.84 to £0.87 EUR/USD: Down from $1.12 to $1.11 The euro has spent the last month edging higher against a struggling pound but failing to exert itself against the US dollar. The news that the European Commission had slashed its growth forecasts for two of the largest economies in the Eurozone (Germany and Italy) applied some pressure to EUR/USD, as did the expectation that the European Central Bank (ECB) is likely to keep monetary policy accommodative for the foreseeable future. However, EUR rates were then boosted by the news that the White House would delay tariffs on all car imports by at least six months. The outcome of the EU elec-

EXCHANGE RATES: The outcome of the EU elections could have an impact. tions could have an impact on EUR exchange rates as the month draws to a close. Pound GBP/EUR: Down from €1.15 to €1.13 GBP/USD: Down from $1.29 to $1.27 The last couple of weeks haven’t been kind to the pound,
with the British currency sliding against peers like the euro and US dollar in response to the collapse of cross-party Brexit talks. Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn indicated that talks had gone as far as they could and that striking a deal is impossible amid the ‘increasing weakness and instability’ of the government.
All the ongoing Brexit uncertainty meant the pound was unable to benefit from Bank of England (BoE) Governor Mark Carney asserting that interest rates are likely to rise faster than investors expect. MPs are currently set to vote on the withdrawal bill in early June, and it was reported that if Mrs

May’s plan is defeated again, the UK will either be set for a no-deal or for Article 50 to be revoked. May has also implied that she will set out a timetable for her resignation next month. Such upheaval could send the pound lower in the weeks ahead. With so much Brexit news on the horizon, UK data releases are unlikely to have much impact on the pound. US Dollar USD/GBP: Up from £0.76 to £0.78 USD/EUR: Up from €0.88 to €0.89 Concerns that the US/China trade war is escalating has reduced demand for higher-risk assets in the last few weeks - boosting the US dollar in the process. An article from Chinese media stated: ‘If there is no real concrete action by the United States, it will be meaningless for you to come and talk. It is better to suspend the consultation completely and return to the normal working track.’ Trade concerns may continue driving USD movement in the near-term.

LEAPY LEE SAYS IT OTHERS THINK IT WHY is it that when anyone in the public eye decides to comment on issues of immigration and the effect it is having on Europe and its culture, they are immediately vilified by the politicians, media and a small number of snowflakes, but praised to the roof by the majority of the concerned local populace? Last week John Cleese was the latest shining example. Don’t get me wrong, I have not been too impressed with this man and his antics over the last few years, (although I adored Fawlty Towers!) But when he stated publicly that London was ‘not English any more,’ the ‘likes’ and concurring comments posted on social media were numbered in their thousands. However, with their usual monotonous regularity, the ‘Good Morning’ and other media discussion outlets, (with their, oh so carefully selected panelists!) went out of their way to argue a case to the contrary. He was accused of racism (Natch) being unpatriotic, disliking black people, Islamophobia and just about anything else designed to stifle the free speech of anyone who dares to speak out against what actually is, so obviously, manifesting across the whole of Europe. Well, I’m sure it comes as no surprise to most of you, that I am one of the untold thousands of beleaguered and vilified ‘ordinary’ public that is in wholehearted agreement with his remarks.

Not English any more?
LONDON: Has it changed beyond recognition over the years? London isn’t English any more. It is a simple statement of fact. Frankly anyone who thinks otherwise, has either not been there, or walks around with a sack over their head. Over the last 30 years, this great city has
changed almost beyond all recognition. Large areas do truly resemble the Middle East. Often, when taking public transport, you can travel the whole journey without hearing the English language spoken once. When I was a young man
growing up in London, the only Burkas on show were worn by the wives of visiting Saudi Sheiks and Royalty escaping from Ramadan by travelling to the UK (where no one had even heard of it!) and wandering around Harrods and Hatton Garden, handbags stuffed with untold thousands, while their husbands wagered fortunes in the gambling clubs of the West End. These days, in many areas, you’d be hard pressed to find a female whose apparel didn’t cover her from head to foot. The point I am trying to make here is that it is glaringly obvious that London, and many other European cities, are not so culturally indigenous any more. Whether this is a good, or a bad thing is irrelevant. When the usual predictable lot emerge from the shadows, raising any objection they can think of to stifle one iota of reasonable discussion on the subject, methinks that many do protest far too much. Let them remember, that although many would prefer to turn our great societies into one of the suppressed countries of the Middle or Far East, freedom of speech is still at the very heart of our English heritage. It’s what our ancestors fought and died for. Woe betides those who seek to either erode or change this basic British right of existence. It will not sit well! Going gaga on gigas Terence Kennedy recalls when men were men and computers saved kilobytes
ON eBay I recently found a book I once wrote priced at €20. They also had another copy in the same condition, but this time with an added cachet: it was signed by the author. And cost €5 less. This humbling discovery set me to remembering the extent of that book’s original text. It was written on a simple DOS-based word-processor, and the entire text occupied a minuscule 532 KB - half a megabyte! Megabytes? Remember those before we all went gaga on gigas, teras and petas? When storage was so precious (and of course men were men and we all lived in cardboard boxes), a Sinclair ZX chess game didn’t even need 1KB to run (487 bytes is still apparently the world record). These days my toothbrush needs a thousand times that just to log its bedtime routine. Once the floppy disk and then the writeable CD bit the digital dust we became hugely cavalier w ith t h e sh e e r v o lu mes o f th e
stuff we now create and save. Wh ere it u se d to be said a floppy disk could hold a couple of hundred bibles, now we casually rac k u p a hundre d megabytes for a turgid report with a few piecharts, several gigabytes for Microsoft’s monster O ffice s u ite , a nd don’t ev en me n tio n jus t how man y s q u illi ons of megabytes today’s gargantuan games gobble up. Just how should we be backing up our precious information now there’s s o d a rn ed mu ch of it? (And you do of course backup, don’t you?). flash drives and SD cards to back up, but despite ever-decreasing prices and ever-increasing capacities, the best bang f or your backup buck is still an external (USB) harddrive. What ever m edi um you choose ( and t he accompanying panel m i ght hel p) , don’t make the fundamental error I committed those many years ago: keeping your backup wi t h your com put er. Store it somewhere ‘off-site,’ even with a neighbour for safety. I didn’t - until a fire consumed both my computer and its backup on the same desk. So now if I want to see what I actually wrote back then it’s going to cost me that €20. Or €5 less for the signed copy.

HDD or SSD is the question WHAT should it be: a cheaper, heavier HDD, or the newer, more expensive but far faster SSD? Megabyte for megabyte the clunky old mechanical beasts are still the best bargain, but the gap is narrowing fast. And as a general rule of thumb, the bigger (ie higher capacity) drive you buy, the cheaper it gets per megabyte of storage. One thing you can safely ignore is the hoary old warning that solid-state storage wears out fast. Yes it can survive fewer read and write cycles than its mechanical predecessor, but these days that’s almost irrelevant. Some SSDs now have a 10-year warranty, and experts reckoned that one new model just out will last the average Joe 114 years. I’m not counting on outliving mine.

TO the Editor My friend was booked on to a low cost flight from Corvera to Leed’s Bradford on Friday, May 31 in the evening. After boarding, a technical fault meant the flight would be delayed, so they were disembarked and the baggage offloaded. They were informed that because the airport closed early on Fridays and Saturdays there would not be sufficient time to do the repair to meet the the closure time, and because of this the replacement aircraft would have to fly into Alicante. This meant they would not get to Leeds until the early hours of Saturday morning. I think I have my facts correct, and if so what a cowboy, village airstrip this herd of white elephants, this whole ill thought out, ego boosting money gobbling disaster has turned out to be. How’s it Leapy I APPLAUD your article on South Africa (Issue 1769). My wife and I were fortunate to have left SA two years ago and with me being UK born were welcomed into this lovely country we now live in. When I tell people about the life conditions in SA they look at me as if I’m talking gobbledy gook. The amount of farm murders, the couple who ran out of petrol last week who were shot dead for a mobile phone, SA has more road deaths over Christmas than the UK has for a whole year, the amount of unlicensed firearms, it’s worse than a war zone and nobody cares. Apartheid was started by a very short sighted man but what there is now, is Apartheid in reverse in a far worse state where you are forced to employ indigenous people, forced to have them in managerial positions, to have them as majority partners in your business and to have them in all sporting teams regardless of the consequences and or qualifications, you cannot employ the best qualified person, your business is allocated points for employment of black people, employment of coloured, Indian or whites gets you no points, not enough points no government or municipal work at all. I salute you for bringing some of the plight of all South Africans and Zimbabwians regardless of race or creed to light, it is the greedy ministers to blame. NEWS that anti-tourist graffiti appeared on the walls of Granada City last week has reignited the debate over the effects of an economically vital industry on Spanish locals. Spain’s tourism sector is the third largest contributor to the overall economy, accounting for about 10 per cent of total output (Gross Domestic Product, GDP) according to government figures. The industry is responsible for developing large swathes of the country’s Mediterranean coastline which expatriates now call home, as pictures of Benidorm from the 1950s and 1960s illustrate. Cities such as Granada also draw a hefty dividend from tourists who spend their money in local shops, bars and restaurants, benefiting the wider economy. The traffic of travellers into Spain has also helped to build bonds across borders and break down misconceptions held by tourists and locals about each other and their countries. But as with all aspects of the economy, the gains are seldom shared equally and the price of success for some is suffering for others. The Canary and Balearic islands are both home to anti-tourism movements who argue the industry has led to overdevelopment, harming their homes and the environment. In Barcelona the rise of holiday rentals has seen residents priced or even turfed out of neighbourhoods where they grew up because of the lure of profits from tourism. If tensions are to be eased then the benefits from the industry must be more widely shared and the impact on locals reduced.

Anti-tourist graffiti appears in Granada I live in a simple flat in a tourist hotspot on Mallorca. The residents pay their rents and feed their families because of doing business with the people visiting their small city. Only very few residents are against tourists. Typically those who hate foreigners in general. But, as I said, they are very few in number. Property prices in certain Spanish areas are not surging because of tourism, but because of big companies and rich individuals who are buying up property for investment purposes. THE quiet dignity shown by Larry the cat on the doorstep of No 10 prior to Theresa May’s resignation speech is what I would wish for in the next prime minister. Before Theresa May could make the farewell speech, the stage first had to be made catfree. For 30 minutes, Larry the Downing Street mouser had sat on the doorstep, his back turned scornfully against the media as if to say: ‘What purrpuss do you serve? Are you fur real?’ before the door swung open and he was ushered inside. Theresa May led the Conservative party to a precipice; now that party is in danger of toppling over the edge. Its next leader has an unenviable task ahead. Bringing the party together will be as difficult as the Brexit negotiations, and the outcome just as unpredictable. Currently, everyone’s running in a selfindulgent leadership beauty parade. It’d be far easier if we had a list of MPs who AREN’T standing as candidates, it’d save time and space. And we can’t rule out the possibility Theresa May misreads the mood (again) and throws her hat into the ring. And heaven help us if Failing

LEGALLY SPEAKING Can they change their deed? Three years ago we bought a semi-detached villa in a community. The property is in fact bigger than our title deed says. We had a survey done and it shows that our property is 80 square metres bigger than the registered size. We would like to legalise this difference. Everything in life is temporary Joris Plu THERE is a nice quote which says ‘everything is temporary, emotions, thoughts, people and scenery. Do not become too attached. Just flow with it.’ I strongly believe that when you in your life can master this saying, you will be a very happy person. And of course the people around you will benefit from this state of mind. Yes we all know that everything is temporary, but still we find it very hard to live by this. The most common thing that keeps people away from acting towards this belief is not fully understanding that we are in control of our emotions. We do not fully understand that emotions are not controlling us even though it appears that way for

many of us most of the time. Our thoughts which are led by our emotions are temporary and
controllable. If we can separate the emotion from our thinking, from our brain and literally just look at
the emotion from a distance - in a way examine it rationally - then we have a wonderful opportunity to see and feel that those emotions are not here to stay. It is not as easy done as said, but it can be done. And for those who know how to handle this there is a more peaceful life ahead. An example of how to do this is the next time you feel an emotion, use your brain, look at the emotion and ask yourself what kind it is. Look at the emotion from a distance. If it is fear for example, ask yourself where this fear is coming from. Because fear on its own does not really exist. With our brain we make something fearful, it comes from our past. What we have learned or experienced. Look at little children they have no fear. We as adults bring fear into their minds because we want to protect the children, maybe overprotect them. Our parents brought fear into

BLUEBERRIES: Scientists believe they may be key to improving heart health.
Superfoods A NEW study has shown that a cup of blueberries a day could reduce the risk of heart disease by around 15 per cent. Research at the University of East Anglia found that 150 grams of the fruit could improve blood flow and reduce stiffness of arteries. The study looked at 138 overweight and obese adults aged between 50 and 75, and with a combination of diabetes and high blood pressure. Scientists found the blueberries reduced their risk of heart disease by
between 12 and 15 per cent over six months. Dr Peter Curtis, the study’s co-author, said: “We found eating one
cup of blueberries per day resulted in sustained improvements in vascular function and arterial stiffness.”

Hidden side of rental contracts
CONSULAR MATTERS JENS, my friend Peter’s brother, wants to come to live in Spain because after many years of hard work in a well-known supermarket in Copenhagen, he wants to have a warm retirement on our Costa Del Sol. Many of the foreigners who come to live in Spain decide to rent a house to establish their permanent residence, either because they prefer to rent and save their money or they want to spend some time and get to know the area before buying a property. Peter has instructed me to draft the rental contract because he has heard that during the last year the law relating to housing rental contract law has undergone what can only be described as roller coaster changes involving three new regulations in about four months. Since March 6, 2019 we have had a new regulation whose most important changes are also the least known, well at least by the tenants. The new law gives rights in favour of tenants who sign a lease after that date for their permanent residence.

RENTAL CONTRACT: The law has undergone roller coaster changes. The first of this new regulation is that the law itself imposes on the landlord a minimum contract term of five years if the tenant so wishes. It is a right for tenants and an obligation for owners. Once the five-year contract has been completed, the
lease can be renewed for another three years if the tenant so wishes and notifies the landlord within the legally established time frame and in the event that the landlord has not reported the said contract extension. It also establishes the new word-
ing of the law that the annual increase in rent being paid can only be increased according to the official index standard of living (IPC) published by the INE (Spanish National Institute of Statistics). This index will operate as a maxi-
mum limit; therefore the rent being paid cannot be raised beyond the increase of said IPC. The intention of this law is to give some stability to tenants so that they can settle in a house with certain guarantees of permanence, but it is also true that this extension of the mandatory term of the lease and the limit that the law has put on raising the rent could cause landlords to think twice before renting their home and this could lead to a decrease in the number of houses available for permanent rental in our area where holiday rentals can be very attractive. We will have to wait a bit to see how this new regulation affects a seasonal market. These measures do not apply to leases of holiday homes, rural homes for farms or luxury homes, among others that are governed by other rules, but it is not Jens’ intention to rent one of these homes. FLEA MARKETS: Snafflers always find the best bargains here. the Salvation Army secondhand shop in Son Caliu does a roaring trade, and it has been joined by others in different parts of Mallorca. Then there are car boot sales. The one at Marratxi has grown massively since it first started and Consell’s flea market is legendary. My friend Louis the Lip is a connoisseur of the car
boot. He used to run his expert eye over the rows of tat and hone in on a find at 500 metres. He is now keeping folks amused at many antiques fairs in his beloved Essex. Louis has the snaffle gene that part of your DNA that enables you to sniff out bargains. Of course, the best bargains are the ones that are free.
There are certain places on Mallorca where (thanks to the street bins) you can literally pick up a ‘free’ bargain. I can’t reveal the secrets of a lifetime of snaffling, but suffice to say that, over the years, I have acquired (totally legally) an armchair, a mattress and a fullyworking television and video combo by being at the right bin
at the right time. Okay so it wasn’t a flat screen, more of a fat screen, but it worked! Snafflers have the eternal optimist streak of always hoping to find a lost Rembrandt in their nan’s fuzzy felt collection. You can see it in the eyes of the ever-hopeful contributors who have elbowed their way to the front of the line in ‘The Antiques Roadshow.’ Surely that cracked gravy boat I picked up for 50p at the car boot is worth a small fortune? The highest valued piece ever to turn up in front of Fiona Bruce was a Faberge flower presented to the Queen’s Own Worcestershire Hussars as a tournament trophy by the Countess of Dudley in the early 1900s. Having gathered dust in the regiment’s mess for over a century it is now estimated to worth over a million pounds. And what about Carole Barrett who bought four enamelled glass tumblers for 25p each at a car boot sale in Brighton only
to sell them for £21,600 catapulting her into the top division of treasure hunters. So get up in the attic, grovel round in the garage and rifle through your mum’s old biscuit tins, you never know what you might find! A - Z OF MALLORCA This week reaches the letter ‘Z’ for ZAMBOMBA... A zambomba is a drum-like instrument that has a stick inserted through the skin. The stick is moved up and down, creating the rhythm. Small cymbals are normally attached to the stick to give extra effect, and these zambombas would normally be made from an old paint tin or terracotta flower pot, with a membrane stretched over the top and a stick inserted through it. Fixed term loans on the rise THE number of fixed rate mortgages given is exploding as prospective homeowners hedge against a rise in interest rates. In March they made up 41.9 per cent of all mortgages granted for housing, compared to 58.1 per cent for variable rate loans. This is a historical high in Spain, where fixed deals have not traditionally been popular. Although the European Central Bank delayed a decision on a rise in interest rates at its last meeting in March, consumer fears of a rise have been driving fixed-rate loans for
years. In 10 years they have gone from being marginal (3 per cent in March 2009) to almost half of the mortgage cake. The new record, for the second month in a row, came despite the fact that they became more expensive. On average, the fixed interest rate on home mortgages signed in March stood at 3.11 per cent, compared with 3.05 per cent in February. This is the highest interest rate since April 2018, after last December’s low of 2.98 per cent. On the other hand, the price of variable interest mortgages fell to 2.34
per cent, compared to 2.37 per cent in February, although in this case it is at the same level as in recent months. The average for all housing loans, both fixed and variable, is an average 2.62 per cent, identical to the previous month, according to data provided last week by the National Statistics Institute (INE) from property records throughout Spain. When it comes to the number of mortgages granted, in March this year they increased by 15.8 per cent over the same month in 2018. The growth accelerated in comparison with re-
spect to the previous month (9.2 per cent year-on-year). By Autonomous Communities, almost all of them saw a rise in mortgages approved, but the Balearic Islands (49 per cent), Extremadura (35.6 per cent) and Murcia (31.1 per cent) stood out. Halls were registered in just three, with a collapse in Aragon (-18.3 per cent) and very slight falls in Comunidad Valenciana (-2.1 per cent) and Asturias (-1.6 per cent). Barry Duke I HAVE been following with intense interest and a great deal of concern the protests outside schools in Birmingham about the teaching of relationship lessons. At the centre of the escalating row, which has seen at least two schools coming under siege from mainly Muslim extremists, is the assertion that children are ‘being taught to be gay’ ridiculous since sexual orientation is an innate characteristic, rather than one that is learned. My sympathies lay squarely with the staff at Parkfield Community and Anderson Park schools who have received abuse and death threats for simply abiding with the provisions of the Equality Act of 2010. But now, thanks to Britain’s antiextremist campaigner Maajid Nawaz my sympathies extend to what he called the ‘true’ victims of the controversy: gay Muslims. On his LBC radio slot on May 25, he pointed out that the outpouring of homophobia in Birmingham needs to be halted immediately as it was sending a message to the thousands of homosexuals in Muslim communities that they are

And he went as far as to encourage Muslims who disapprove of the protests to show their solidarity with the schools by joining the city’s Pride parade which took place on the day of his broadcast. The parade was led by gay teacher
Andrew Moffat who started the ‘No Outsiders’ lessons at Parkfield. He was joined by Khakan Qureshi, founder of Birmingham South Asians LGBT and Saima Razzaq, from Supporting Education of Equality and Diversity in Schools (SEEDS). In the phone-in that followed, Nawaz expressed further incredulity over the baloney being spouted by mainly religious callers siding with the
protesters. One numpty, calling from Texas, even suggested that teaching inclusivity would lead to children being told that it was OK to beat one’s wife! Nawaz is seldom at a loss for words but this stunned him to such an extent that he abruptly terminated the call. The Texan’s opinion was as stupid as the one by one Birmingham protester who said that being gay was ‘not acceptable in Islam. God created man, then he created women for man’s pleasure and companionship - not another man.’ But one of Nawaz’s callers was highly supportive of the ‘No Outsiders’ programme, saying that she reluctantly intends returning from Madrid to the UK because of the lack of relationship teaching in the Spanish school her kids attend. Not only was there an absence of such lessons, but her children were being exposed to racism. An example she cited was a teacher calling a Japanese child Chinese. When the error was pointed out to her, she retorted ‘what’s the difference?’ All of this tells me that ignorance, fuelled by religious intolerance, is the main reason we’re experiencing these troubling culture clashes.

DANILO PETRUCCI - so often the nearly man - has finally won and he couldn’t have chosen a better venue than his home Italian MotoGP. Now in his eighth season of GP racing, the Italian rode his Ducati to victory, fending off Spaniard Marc Marquez in a thrilling final lap to take the chequered flag by 0.043 of a second. Andrea Dovizioso on the second Ducati came in third just behind the Honda rider, with Alex Rins fourth on a Suzuki. In an exciting start several riders made big improvements on their grid positions. Britain’s Cal Crutchlow stormed off the line and into second from sixth while Andrea Dovizioso went from ninth to third. Alex Rins also had a phenomenal start and climbed seven positions by the end of the opening lap. There was plenty of action in the early stages - a bit too much for home favourite Valentino Rossi. He had made a good start after disasterous qualifying, but
on turn four he tangled with Joan Mir and rejoined in last position after running across the gravel. There was no coming back on lap eight when he crashed at high speed to finish what he himself described as his worst ever Italian MotoGP. At the front there was plenty of action as Rins and Dovizioso took the front, with Marquez dropping down the order before fighting back. Crutchlow also found himself being overtaken, to finish an eventual eighth. Going into the last lap Dovizioso got ahead of Marquez at turn one but ran wide, leaving the door open for Danilo Petrucci to roar through into the lead. Into the final corner Marquez closed rapidly, but Petrucci held on for his first ever win. Speaking after the race Petrucci said: “It’s amazing. It’s unbelievable.” The teams now head to Barcelona for the next round of the championship.
