Grieving father arrested for threatening doctor POLICE arrested the grieving father of a child cancer victim for threatening a doctor and criminal damage. The paediatric oncologist had been treating the man’s daughter at the Paediatric Intensive Care Unit at the Torrecardenas hospital. Sadly the child died. When the doctor informed the immediate family of the tragic news the father reacted by punching the wall and hitting the furniture and nearby flowerpots. At the same time the man verbally attacked the doctor, repeatedly threatening to kill him and blaming him for his daughter’s death. The doctor reported the incident to police. Officers arrested the father a few days later, reporting they had waited until after the child’s funeral and to ‘as much as

Rock rescue FIREFIGHTERS managed to rescue a man who fell onto rocks on Almeria’s Almadrabillas beach, leaving him injured. A passer-by called the emergency services just before midnight when they heard the 54-year old’s cries for help.
Fishy story THE appearance of large, hungry carp could be the explanation for a drop in the number of aquatic birds on some of the Punta Entinas lagoons, according to the Grupo Ecologista Mediterraneo (GEM).
Hands off! POLICE detained a man for going up behind a woman on an Almeria City street and touching and grabbing her bottom. Police said he had been reported on a previous occasion for a similar incident.
Happy ending IT was a happy ending for a dog which got stuck at the bottom of an irrigation pond. Guardia Civil rescued the exhausted German Shepherd from the artificial pool in Tabernas several days after it became trapped. A local resident had alerted the emergency services to the pooch’s plight. When officers arrived at the scene they found the dog flat out in the pond in shallow water, soaked and mud-caked, and clearly dehydrated. It soon became clear the animal slipped when it tried to get itself out and didn’t have the strength to make it to safety. Taking ropes provided by a neighbour, officers cut through the metal fence, one lowering the other down to the dog at the pool bottom. The officer managed to get hold of the hound, attach it to the rope and hoist it up. Police reported the German Shepherd had no microchip and has been entrusted to the care of the Refugio Patan animal protection society in Zurgena.

Violent workmate brawl ends in arrest A FIGHT between two female workmates in an El Ejido pub left one woman with serious cuts to her body. The bar owner called the police when a violent argument between the two got out of hand. A patrol found one of the women with a broken glass in her hand and the other covered in blood and with gashes on her hands, back, chest and side. She was taken to the Poniente hospital for emergency treatment. Officers arrested 64year-old ECR for inflicting bodily harm.
Pastry chef murder suspect behind bars A LITHUANIAN woman suspected of murdering a pastry chef in El Ejido in 2014 and skipping the country is now behind bars in Almeria. When police officers found the victim’s body there were clear signs of extreme violence, her face and head covered in cuts and bruises. Investigations pointed to money as the motive for the crime: the murdered woman was €700 in debt to the Lithuanian and her boyfriend.

GUARDIA CIVIL are investigating a Roquetas de Mar farmer for acquiring eight motors for opening and closing greenhouse roof windows which had been stolen from properties in the same municipality and in Nijar. Officers found the motors had been painted and the identification labels removed.
NIJAR has the lowest average income of any municipality in Spain with more than 20,000 inhabitants, according to the National Institute of Statistics’ 2019 Urban Indicators report. Average annual earnings per Nijar resident is €6,253, although the report findings are based on 2016 data.

Region celebrates THIS picture of the Santa Maria Cathedral in Murcia comes as the city’s region celebrates is annual holiday this Monday (June 10). The Murcia Region covers an area of about 11,313 square kilometres, about 2.2 per cent of the Spanish landmass. It is home to almost 1.5 million people, roughly a third of which live in its capital, Murcia City. The region has a warm, arid climate and water transfers from nearby rivers have supported its farming industry. It is home to the Mar Menor lagoon, a 170-square-kilometre body of
water known for its diverse marine life. Ancestors of modern-day humans have inhabited what is now the Murcia Region for around one million years. Phoenician settlers from North Africa arrived in the 3rd century BC and founded a city which the Romans named Cartago Nova after their conquest of the Iberian Peninsula. The modern-day city of Cartagena stands on its site. The area was later ruled by the Visigoths and then the Islamic Moors
during the Middle Ages, before becoming the independent Kingdom of Murcia in the 11th century. The region fell to the Kingdom of Castile in 1243. The region grew economically in following years and enjoyed a mining boom in the 19th century. Cartagena was a key Spanish naval base from the 16th century onwards. Work on the Santa Maria Cathedral (pictured) finished in 1465 after beginning in 1394. The 90-metre-tall bell tower was built between 1521 and 1791.

Music move THE Andalucia regional government approved the creation of the Cuevas del Almanzora Professional Music Conservatory from the Miguel Caparros Belmonte Elementary Music Conservatory. The music school will cover students from Antas, Bedar, Cuevas del Almanzora, Garrucha, Huercal-Overa, Los Gallardos, Mojacar, Pulpi, Sorbas, Turre and Vera.

Drug growing couple cuffed A COUPLE are under arrest after police found 239 marihuana plants growing in their Almeria City home. Police charged the Spaniard and his Algerian girlfriend with a crime against public health and with defrauding the power supply, also seizing a bag with 160 grammes of marihuana, 19 transformers, 19 halogen lamps, two air extractors and digital scales. Investigations into the property began at the end of April on the

back of reports there was a farmhouse close to the Andarax park which was being used as an indoor marihuana plantation. Observations of the area and the strong smell of the drug emanating from the property confirmed police suspicions. The operation revealed the couple, both in their 50’s, also lived in the farmhouse. One of them remained in the property at all times, the police said. Both the man and the woman have criminal records.
Police detain migrant smuggling suspects POLICE have arrested two Algerians suspected of trying to get 11 fellow countrymen to Spain. The detentions came after a patrol intercepted the rubber dinghy carrying the 13 North Africans one nautical mile from the Genoveses beach in Cabo de Gata at the end of last month. Investigations carried out with the assistance of the European Border and Coast Guard Agency (FRONTEX), along with inter-

According to police, they charged each would-be immigrant the equivalent of €1,500 to make the crossing from the Cap Blanc beach in Algeria in the 6x2 metre boat. ‘Beginning of the end’ for irregular property problem ‘AT last!’ was the AUAN housing association’s reaction to the Andalucia government’s announcement on measures dealing with the irregular property problem. AUAN President Maura Hillen and the Almanzora Valley-based association’s spokesman Gerardo Vazquez were in the Andalucia parliament last week to hear Junta Development and Territorial Planning Minister Marifran Carazo describe proposals to address the situation of the region’s estimated 300,000 properties which fail to comply with current planning regulations. The measures are designed, AUAN said, to bring relief to home owners and minimise environmental damage while a fundamental rewrite of the Planning Law (LOUA), is underway. Having reviewed existing legislation, the first step, the regional minister explained, would be the issue of a clarifying instruction to allow officials to expand the granting of an AFO certificate (a form of legal recognition) to more irregular homes. The instruction was signed on May 31 and is now in force.

would approve the decree before the end of the current parliamentary session in August, Carazo stated. In addition, she explained, the Andalucia government proposes dealing with the ‘more complex’ problem of irregular housing estates, or ‘asentamientos,’ without having to wait for the ‘lengthy process’ of the approval and execution of a town plan (PGOU).

This would be achieved through the introduction of ‘planes especiales,’ or special plans, which function independently of the town plan and establish solutions tailored to each estate. The minister emphasised the costs of these plans would be met by the property owners. AUAN said it understood a special plan would be applied if it is deemed impractical to legalise an irregular estate due to its physical characteristics or distance from existing urban centres. Even more important than what the minister announced, according to Gerardo Vazquez, was the ‘clear and convincing willingness’ to resolve the irregular houses problem. Maura Hillen echoed Vazquez’s optimism on political will. “Witnessing the minister’s statement to parliament and the response of the various political parties it is clear that we now have consensus to put an end to this problem once and for all. And we have a government that is prepared to listen to the associations and take the necessary realistic and practical steps,” the AUAN President affirmed.

All set for celebrations

The grand procession this Saturday (June 8) is the main attraction. The local council has contributed €12,000 to the costs of staging the event. The Vera Moors and Christians Cultural Association announced the procession route will be the same as last year’s, but promised ‘a big final surprise’ when the troops make their entrance in the town centre’s Plaza Mayor. In the run up to this year’s big day
there have been a range of complementary cultural activities, including a roundtable debate on heritage restoration criteria with the team of experts working on the town’s Espiritu Santo archeological site. Tomorrow (Friday), Moors and Christians will take each other on in living chess in the Plaza de la Verja at 9pm. Children from the municipality’s four schools will be taking part in the dramatised match. This will be the sixth year Vera has staged a Moors and Christians festival
and marks the 450th anniversary of the siege of the town by Aben Humeya in 1569. “The event has become a wellknown tourism and cultural attraction in Almeria Province, giving more prominence to the fiestas in honour of our patron saint, the Virgin of the Sorrows,” commented Moors and Christians Cultural Association President Jose Manuel Ramirez. Ramirez said the celebrations benefited the local economy, especially the hotel and catering sector.
Shiny new fire engine arrives THE Levante Almeriense Firefighters Consortium has taken delivery of a shiny new fire engine. The firefighting service acquired the vehicle thanks to a €250,000 subsidy from the Almeria provincial council. The light urban vehicle has capacity for 2,000 litres of water, and is equipped
with everything necessary for firefighting and rescue operations. Features include an onboard computer, extendable ladder and the latest telecommunications equipment. The Levante Almeriense service covers 48 municipalities in the Levante, Los Velez and Almanzora regions of the province.

Recycling on wheels RECYLING in Pulpi just got easier. The local council’s Environment department has acquired three new mobile ‘ecoparks’ which are parking up in locations around the municipality, making it more convenient to dispose of waste items in an environmentally friendly way. Every day there is an ecopark next to the Punto Limpio (Clean Point) at Pulpi town’s market and at the beginning of the seafront promenade in San de los Terreros.
In El Convoy the site is the social centre, next to the Punto Limpio, every Tuesday. Thursdays and Fridays are ecopark days at the La Fuente pavillion, again by the side of the Punto Limpio. The Jaravia location is the social centre on the first and third Wednesday of every month. A variety of different items and packaging can be recycled in the ecoparks, ranging from small electronic items, cassettes, videos and batteries to toys, cosmetics, aerosols, paint, light bulbs and books.

THE countdown has begun to the biggest, loudest and most colourful event of the year in Mojacar, the spectacular Moors and Christians fiesta. The Al-Mosaquer Moors and Christians Association presented the third edition of its glossy Moros y Cristianos brochure last week. The publication includes the official programme and poster for this year’s event, and, the association says, features even more pages and content than before. There are a greater number of images of the fiesta characters and highlights, as well as Moors and Christians-related articles and details of other events set to take place in the village over the action-packed weekend of June 14 to 16. Speaking at the presentation in Mojacar’s plenary hall, Tourism Councillor, Emmanuel Agüero, stressed how important this ea-

gerly anticipated fiesta is, not only for local people, but for tourism in general. The councillor also explained the programme had been expanded over the years to incorporate activities and new ideas that take Mojacar’s Moors and Christians way beyond a usual fiesta, all designed to enrich and complement the event with a broader historical and cultural significance.
VISITOR ATTRACTION: Councillor Emmanuel Agüero (inset) stressed the importance of the Moors and Christians festival for the local tourist sector. The fiesta has the full support of Mojacar Council, and Agüero also announced that a medieval
camp would be set up to recreate the typical everyday life of the era, aimed to entertain as well as provide an insight into local history. The idea sprang from discoveries made last year through excavations on Mojacar la Vieja, believed to be the site of the original settlement, and the interest local people have expressed in finding out more about their roots. The concept will be an addition to the Moros y Cristianos Museum, which was created last year, and the educational workshops organised for the Bartolome Flores school pupils. Al-Mosaquer President, Diego Morales announced several other novelties this year, including the extension of the photography contest to five categories, each with a €200 prize. There is no restriction on the number of images which can be entered before the September 15 deadline.

Giant geode works going well MEASURES to enable Pulpi’s Rica Mine and Pilar de Jaravia giant geode to be opened up to guided visits are going well, works manager Jose Angel Solanilla reported. The mines engineer accompanied the newly re-elected Mayor Juan Pedro Garcia when he went to see in person how the works were progressing last week. This was Garcia’s first official visit after his conservative People’s Party claimed victory in the municipal election, gaining eight seats on the council. He was joined by provincial council deputy Angeles Martinez and Pulpi Tourism councillor Juan Bautista Lopez. “We wanted to make our first visit after the elections to be to the most important works we are carrying out at the moment”, the mayor commented. “The works are continuing at a good pace,” Solanilla told the visitors, estimating they could be finished by the end of June.

Music school movement CONSTRUCTION on the building which will house the Huercal-Overa music school has got going. Acting Mayor Domingo Fernandez described it as an ‘important project for the whole municipality.’ “Today the machines are working, and in a lit-
tle over a year this will be finished, having at last a building to house our municipal music school,” Fernandez commented. “It will be a place of training and a meeting point for music.” The municipal investment in the 1,000sqm, three-storey facility is €917,158.
PERSONAL: “If it only saves one life it’s worth it,” said playwright Jim Dale-Grey. A LOCAL theatre group is set to stage two special fundraising shows. Shoestring Productions will be putting on open-air performances of Jim Dale-Grey’s The Ghosts of Hotel La Resistance to raise money for potentially life-saving defibrillators. The two defibrillators are already in place in separate locations in Mojacar’s La Parata. They are automatically connected to the emergency services, and fitted with GPS so they can be easily located. Funds are now needed for the annual maintenance. Veteran fundraiser for worthy causes Keith Holland was prompted to raise the cash to acquire the La Parata defibrillators after learning about the experience of the Hotel La Resistance series of comedies’ author, playwright and actor Jim Dale-Grey. Tragically Jim lost his wife
Theatre fundraising for life-saving cause Annabelle two years ago to a heart attack. Annabelle collapsed at the couple’s home, and despite CPR attempts she died before the emergency services arrived. Aware that defibrillators can save cardiac-arrest victims, one of Jim and Annabelle’s sons, Mark Grey, came up with the money to buy one of the devices in his mother’s name through crowdfunding. This is now at the Red Cross on Mojacar Playa. Keith felt it made sense to install defibrillators in La Parata too given the fairly isolated mountain location. Various events organised with the sup-
port of restaurant owner Shea, who provided the venue, secured sufficient funds for the equipment. After seeing the La Resistance productions, it was a logical step for Keith and Shea to ask Shoestring to put on openair performances in La Parata to collect money for the defibrillator upkeep. Jim told the Euro Weekly News how important he believes the defibrillator initiative is, commenting, “if it only saves one person then it’s worth it.” Jim has just completed the fourth in the La Resistance series, which is due to be performed later this year.
Shoestring Productions shows have to date raised some €3,000 for the PAWS-PATAS animal charity shelter. All the money raised from ticket sales from the open-air La Parata performances on the evening of June 20 and 21 will go towards the defibrillator maintenance. Money raised from the raffles will go to PAWS-PATAS. Tickets for the shows, which include a two-course dinner and songs from popular local singer Jack Law in the interval, are available from the PAW-PATAS fundraising outlet in Mojacar Playa. Striking pacts EFFORTS to reach deals in town and city councils and in regional assemblies continue this week following local and regional elections at the end of this month. In Madrid, mayor Manuela Carmena, a former leftist judge with the Mas Madrid party, had the most council seats but could be ousted by an alliance between rightwing parties. Ciudadanos will likely be the kingmaker and will have to choose between working with the left or the conservative Partido Popular (PP) and far-right Vox. Barcelona’s Acting Mayor Ada Colau, of the cityfocused En Comu, faces having to strike a deal with the insurgent pro-independence Esquerra Republicana de Cataluya (ERC). PSOE faces a more straightforward path to power in Andalucia where it has taken six of eight of its diputacions.

By Joe Gerrard SPAIN marked one year since the left-leaning Partido Socialista (PSOE) took power following a successful motion of no confidence, with the party again reaching out to build a majority. PSOE’s Meritxell Batet, the new President of the Congress of Deputies, met with King Felipe on Monday to open talks on reaching a settlement among lawmakers. The two will also seek a path for acting Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez to stay on in the post as per Constitutional arrangements for choosing governments following elections. In echoes of manoeuvres which brought Sanchez and the PSOE to power a year ago, the support of some smaller, regionalist parties will be needed for an absolute majority. PSOE is in a stronger position following the recent rounds of elections which left it the largest party in the Cortes by some margin. The party may be able to rid itself from a dependence on pro-

The party’s claim to power is also strengthened by positive EU election results and a broadly successful showing in local and regional elections. predecessor Mariano Rajoy have signalled they will work with him again. The Basque Partido Nacionalista Vasco (PNV) has said it would be willing to support PSOE. But its condition is thought to be that PSOE rules out working with the centrist Ciudadanos, who they see as a threat to their demands for greater self-rule.
This shows that Sanchez and PSOE will have to navigate their way through a tangled web of demands, animosities and rivalries in order to build a working majority. The path looked smoother prior to the May elections when it looked likely that PSOE would strike a deal with the leftist Podemos. But that party’s poor showing in those elections robbed them of their leverage, freeing up PSOE to consider more options. The most straightforward option for Sanchez remains working with Ciudadanos. The two parties have a combined total of 180 seats in Congress, four more than is needed for a majority. But there is little appetite for the pact amongst PSOE members and, as the case of PNV shows, Sanchez would risk alienating other parties.

Renaissance coins SPAIN’S Royal Mint has released designs for commemorative coins marking the country’s Re-
naissance era. The Mint released the coins, a silver €10 piece and a gold €200 piece, as part of its Ages of Europe series.
The ages of the series match the seven stages of European cultural development depicted on euro banknotes. The design features an engraving of the Alhambra in Granada City.

Sustainability study RESEARCHERS have completed a study into the sustainability and well-being of thousands of protected areas throughout Spain. David Rodriquez and Javier Martinez’s Sustainability and Protected Areas in Spain book is being published as part of a wider project from the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC). The book covers natural habitats, species and human factors in the 3,823 protected areas that make up more than 27 per cent of the Spanish landmass.
Football club stripper row A FOOTBALL club in Cataluña has sparked a feminist outcry after hiring strippers to celebrate their promotion. Footage of team members from Club Esportiu Llanca partying with the scantilydressed women in their changing room surfaced in Spanish media last week. The club from Girona Province were celebrating their promotion to the Second Catalan Division. Club Secretary Franscesc Romero has apologised to Llanca mayor Pere Vila but said his mistake lay in not asking the town council for permission to hire the strippers. He said strippers were an ‘original’ way of celebrating the club’s promotion. Pictures and footage showed the women dancing while players cheer them on. On social media, the club has since apologised for the ‘error’ and said it supported tolerance, respect and equality. Cataluña’s Women’s Institute has complained to the club and to the region’s football league. Institute President Nuria Balada said she condemned the use of the women to celebrate.

FREED: Spanish Guardia Civil discovered illegally traded reptiles. TWELVE arrests - six in Spain - have been made in a massive international operation against the illegal trade in reptiles. Operation Blizzard, coordinated by Europol and INTERPOL, involved agencies from 22 countries and led to
seizures ranging from live animals to high-end fashion products. The operational activities targeted aircraft passengers, commercial cargo, pet shops and those legally allowed to keep reptiles. Almost 1,500 live snakes, lizards and geckos were seized from right across Europe. The inspections led to the arrests, with the other six held in Italy. Globally, operation Blizzard resulted in the seizure of 4,419 live animals including 2,703 turtles and tortoises, 1,059 snakes, 512 lizards and geckos and 20 crocodiles and alligators. Investigators also seized 152 handbags, wallets, watchstraps, medicines and taxidermies derived from reptiles. Pedro Felício, head of Europol’s Economic and Property Crime Unit, said: “Wildlife trafficking has increased significantly in recent years to the point where we have now thousands of reptiles, worth millions of euros, being seized every year by EU law enforcement agencies with the support of Europol.”

The Brexit Party, led by former UKIP leader Nigel Farage, hopes to capitalise on a strong showing at recent European Parliament elections. Labour is hoping to take the seat again after winning it by a slim majority from the Conservatives in 2017. Today’s by-election was called after sitting Labour MP Fiona Onasanya was removed by recall petition. Parties and pundits will be watching the vote closely. It is likely to be taken as a litmus test for whether The Brexit Party can make inroads into national politics. Results from the European Parliament election show about 38 per cent of voters in Peterborough backed Farage’s party. They also backed leave in the 2016 referendum by 61 per cent to 39 per cent. Previous attempts to create a united remain front for the election after talks between the Liberal Democrats, the Green party, Renew and Change UK were inconclusive. New cancer drug AN announcement has been made by the Spanish arm of drug company Eli Lilly that it is now able to offer an oral drug in Spain which helps extend the life expectancy of patients suffering from metastatic breast cancer. This is a relatively uncommon form of cancer as it is estimated that of the 30,000 diagnosed with breast cancer each year, just
8 per cent (2,400) suffer from the metastatic type. In announcing the introduction of this drug abemaciclib (marketed under the trade name Verzenios) a team of oncology specialists from the Gregorio Marañón General Hospital as well as a representative of the pharmaceutical company explained its benefits following trials which have lasted
more than 15 years. For this type of cancer, patients who had relapsed were previously given hormone treatment which tended to be effective for about a year but then lost potency. This new drug however has been seen to work for an average of 28.2 months before resistance occurs and there are very few adverse side effects.
Tourism growth A TOTAL of 21.4 million holidaymakers visited Spain during the first four months of this year, a year-on-year increase of 4.4 per cent according to the National Institute of Statistics (INE). INE figures showed the year-on-year increase for March and April was 5.3 per cent. Spending from tourists grew by 6.4 per cent during those two months compared to the same time in 2018, according to the INE. Data showed the average tourist spent €990 throughout their trip, 1.3 per cent more than in January to April 2018. The year-on-year aver-
age of daily spending increased by 6.3 per cent to €153. British holidaymakers were the single largest group of foreign tourists during the first four months of this year at around 4.3 million. They spent a total of around €4 million during that time, 3.5 per cent more than during the same four months in 2018. Cataluña was the most popular destination for holidaymakers during April with more than 1.6 million visitors. Andalucia came second with more than 1.13 million followed by the Canary Islands with 1.1 million.
Murder arrest A LAWYER and businessman Evaristo González has been arrested in Tenerife as the alleged instigator of the murder of Carlos Machín in April 2018. Both men were initially suspected of being involved in corrupt practices which involved a local politician and revolved around nightclubs in the Canary Islands. In the event, Machin was never charged and it is suggested locally that he may have been assassinated due to the information that he had about the case although there is no indication that he intended to use it against of those charged. He was shot in the car park of a language school in La Laguna where he was studying and the National Police who arrested González are reportedly still searching for others who they believe were involved in the murder.
Driving licences in Spain LIVING in Spain can bring with it an array of issues which may not have been encountered when living in the UK. There are lots of things to consider, and we are here to help try to make the transition and life in Spain a little easier by compiling a series of helpful facts and figures relating to a variety of topics. If you are planning on living in Spain on a permanent basis, it’s a good idea to have a Spanish driving licence - in fact it is mandatory after a while. Here are some guidelines for current and new drivers on how to do this quickly and easily. If you already have a valid EU (European Union) Community or an EEA (European Economic Area) driving licence and meet the minimum driving age in Spain, you can use it for the first two years of residence in Spain, although you must register your details with the traffic authorities after six months. You can register at your Central Register of Drivers and Minor Offenders of the Provincial Traffic Headquarters. The new regulation which requires new residents to exchange their licences for a Spanish one, was enforced three years ago. As such, Spain has agreements with more than 20 countries, allowing drivers to exchange a foreign driver’s licence for its equivalent. Bullfighter in ‘revenge porn’ row COMMENTS from a Spanish bullfighter about a woman who featured in a widely-shared sex video’s suicide have been criticised after he suggested men cannot watch such footage without sharing it. Fran Rivera said it was not ‘manly’ to let videos of that kind go viral and added the woman was not to blame. “But men, and I say this because I’m a man, we’re unable to have such a video and not share it,” Rivera said. It comes after Veronica Rubio, 32, took her own life days after an intimate video of her was shared by work colleagues.
The mother-of-two hung herself a day after her husband saw the video which was made about five years earlier when she was unmarried. It is believed to be a case of ‘revenge porn,’ sex videos of someone shared by ex-partners without their permission. Rivera’s comments drew fire from social media users. Irene Montero, a senior member of the leftist Podemos, said: “We women have to be coy and careful how we behave, because a man can’t see a video ‘like this’ and not share it. That’s not naive idiocy, it’s the kind of logic that blames women in order to hide sexism.”

THE results of a recent study carried out by the Institute of Health Carlos III (ISCIII) as part of World No Tobacco Day, May 31, show that one in five pregnant women in Spain smoke. The study showed that in 2016, 20.4 per cent of pregnant women smoked, compared to 14.3 per cent in 1980. Also, the percentage was higher in pregnant women under the age of 30 and in those with a lower education level. According to ISCIII, one in four Spanish people smoke and 20 per cent of the population considers that tobacco is not harmful to their health.
It comes as a survey carried out by the Spanish Society of Family and Community Medicine (semFYC) found eight out of 10 Spanish people are in favour of banning smoking in cars with children. Of those surveyed, 16 per cent are daily smokers, 33 per cent former smokers and 43 per cent non smokers. SemFYC claimed that in recent years, even though people are not worrying as much about the effects smoking can have on their health, the public acceptance of new rules to stop tobacco consumption has increased.
Vox homophobia row A FAR-RIGHT member of the Madrid Region assembly’s comments that she would prefer her son not to adopt if he were gay have been branded as homophobic. Vox’s health spokesperson in the assembly Gador Joya’s comments have been slammed by social media users and have revived a debate on whether her party is institutionally antiLGBTQ. Joya said: “I would prefer
not to have grandchildren from a homosexual relationship. I would prefer that if my son is homosexual he would not adopt.” Sarrion Pablo Lopez, a highprofile supporter of Ciudadanos, said on Twitter: ‘I imagine that in her years of being a practising paediatrician she never ran into children with parents of the same sex. A real pity! Both these children and their parents would have shown
him that love can help with anything (even her homophobia).’” ‘This is called homophobia. It is clear you prefer to defend your party rather than standing up against homophobia,’ another user Reyes Taranto said. Vox has yet to comment on Joya’s remarks, but party leader Santiago Abascal previously said there was no homophobia in the party and added it has several LGBTQ members.

A TRADE UNION has called on Catalan prosecutors to launch an investigation into the death of a worker for a delivery start-up in Barcelona. UGT said Glovo should be investigated for failing to protect workers’ rights. It comes after one of its riders, a 22-yearold originally from Nepal, was killed following a traffic accident in Barcelona while making deliveries for the company. “UGT believed that the company, Glo-
vo, imposes on its workers, through deception and abuse of their vulnerable status, labour conditions and social security conditions which violate the protections afforded to them by law,” the union said. Glovo said the rider may have been using another’s account which it said was illegal. “Glovo has always, and especially this week, collaborated with law enforcement agencies and has great respect for justice,” the company said.
Police suicide conference MURCIA is set to hold a conference on preventing suicides amongst police officers for the first time in the region. The conference, organised by the Unified Police Syndicate (SUP) and the Unified Association of Guardia Civil (AUGC), is aimed at National and Local Police as well as Guardia Civil officers. It will take place at the UNED (National Distance Education University) in Cartagena on Tuesday, June 11 from 9am. Psychologists will give presentations on the causes and psychological management of suicidal thoughts, violence from a psychological and emotional point of view and resources available for emotional self-protection. The annual rate of deaths by suicide in Spain is of 8.7 per 100,000 inhabitants. Police officers claim they do not have enough resources to prevent suicides in the Security Forces.

The INE’s Urban Indicators 2019 report showed the Madrid Region’s Pozuelo de Alarcon is the town with the highest average income per resident at €25,957 a year. Two Madrid towns, Boadilla
del Monte and Las Rozas, came second and third respectively with €19,702 and €19,340. Andalucia’s Nijar, in Almeria Province, had the lowest per capita income at €6,253. Sevilla Province’s Los Palacios and Villafranca, both with €6,550 were second and third respectively. Alhaurin el Grande, in Malaga Province near the Costa del Sol, was fourth with €6,629 while Almeria Province’s Vicar came fifth with €6,634.
The INE looked at towns with more than 20,000 inhabitants and used figures from 2016, the latest available data on income. The body’s data also showed Cataluña’s Cugat del Valles and Pozuelo de Alarcon had the lowest unemployment rates in 2018 at 6.2 per cent and 6.4 per cent respectively. Jaen Province’s Linares and La Linea de la Concepcion in Cadiz Province had the highest with 32.8 per cent and 29.9 per cent respectively.

Former Bank of Spain Studies Director Jose Luis Malo de Molina said imbalances and risks were not addressed following the 2008 financial crisis and subsequent recession. “We are not prepared to absorb shocks like those seen in 2008. The UGT said the Bank of Spain’s belief that an increase in the rate to €900 per month would negatively impact on job creation was harming its collective bargaining efforts. CEC slam ‘threatening’ tax tone AN association of small and medium sized companies has accused the Spanish Treasury of sending letters about tax with a ‘threatening’ tone to some firms. The Spanish Confederation of Commerce (CEC) said small businesses with low turnover had received the letters warning them about inconsistencies in tax returns. It comes as retail sales have risen by 2 per cent but
small and medium sized firms have seen a drop of 0.5 per cent. CEC General Secretary Jose Guerrero said: “Owners are struggling to move their businesses forward. Euro EUR/GBP: Up from £0.84 to £0.87 EUR/USD: Down from $1.12 to $1.11 The euro has spent the last month edging higher against a struggling pound but failing to exert itself against the US dollar. The news that the European Commission had slashed its growth forecasts for two of the largest economies in the Eurozone (Germany and Italy) applied some pressure to EUR/USD, as did the expectation that the European Central Bank (ECB) is likely to keep monetary policy accommodative for the foreseeable future. However, EUR rates were then boosted by the news that the White House would delay tariffs on all car imports by at least six months. The outcome of the EU elec-

with the British currency sliding against peers like the euro and US dollar in response to the collapse of cross-party Brexit talks. Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn indicated that talks had gone as far as they could and that striking a deal is impossible amid the ‘increasing weakness and instability’ of the government.
All the ongoing Brexit uncertainty meant the pound was unable to benefit from Bank of England (BoE) Governor Mark Carney asserting that interest rates are likely to rise faster than investors expect. MPs are currently set to vote on the withdrawal bill in early June, and it was reported that if Mrs

May’s plan is defeated again, the UK will either be set for a no-deal or for Article 50 to be revoked. May has also implied that she will set out a timetable for her resignation next month. Such upheaval could send the pound lower in the weeks ahead. With so much Brexit news on the horizon, UK data releases are unlikely to have much impact on the pound. US Dollar USD/GBP: Up from £0.76 to £0.78 USD/EUR: Up from €0.88 to €0.89 Concerns that the US/China trade war is escalating has reduced demand for higher-risk assets in the last few weeks - boosting the US dollar in the process. An article from Chinese media stated: ‘If there is no real concrete action by the United States, it will be meaningless for you to come and talk. It is better to suspend the consultation completely and return to the normal working track.’ Trade concerns may continue driving USD movement in the near-term.

LEAPY LEE SAYS IT OTHERS THINK IT WHY is it that when anyone in the public eye decides to comment on issues of immigration and the effect it is having on Europe and its culture, they are immediately vilified by the politicians, media and a small number of snowflakes, but praised to the roof by the majority of the concerned local populace? Last week John Cleese was the latest shining example. Don’t get me wrong, I have not been too impressed with this man and his antics over the last few years, (although I adored Fawlty Towers!) But when he stated publicly that London was ‘not English any more,’ the ‘likes’ and concurring comments posted on social media were numbered in their thousands. However, with their usual monotonous regularity, the ‘Good Morning’ and other media discussion outlets, (with their, oh so carefully selected panelists!) went out of their way to argue a case to the contrary. He was accused of racism (Natch) being unpatriotic, disliking black people, Islamophobia and just about anything else designed to stifle the free speech of anyone who dares to speak out against what actually is, so obviously, manifesting across the whole of Europe. Well, I’m sure it comes as no surprise to most of you, that I am one of the untold thousands of beleaguered and vilified ‘ordinary’ public that is in wholehearted agreement with his remarks.

Not English any more?
LONDON: Has it changed beyond recognition over the years? London isn’t English any more. It is a simple statement of fact. Frankly anyone who thinks otherwise, has either not been there, or walks around with a sack over their head. Over the last 30 years, this great city has
changed almost beyond all recognition. Large areas do truly resemble the Middle East. Often, when taking public transport, you can travel the whole journey without hearing the English language spoken once. When I was a young man
growing up in London, the only Burkas on show were worn by the wives of visiting Saudi Sheiks and Royalty escaping from Ramadan by travelling to the UK (where no one had even heard of it!) and wandering around Harrods and Hatton Garden, handbags stuffed with untold thousands, while their husbands wagered fortunes in the gambling clubs of the West End. These days, in many areas, you’d be hard pressed to find a female whose apparel didn’t cover her from head to foot. The point I am trying to make here is that it is glaringly obvious that London, and many other European cities, are not so culturally indigenous any more. Whether this is a good, or a bad thing is irrelevant. When the usual predictable lot emerge from the shadows, raising any objection they can think of to stifle one iota of reasonable discussion on the subject, methinks that many do protest far too much. Let them remember, that although many would prefer to turn our great societies into one of the suppressed countries of the Middle or Far East, freedom of speech is still at the very heart of our English heritage. It’s what our ancestors fought and died for. Woe betides those who seek to either erode or change this basic British right of existence. It will not sit well! loads of prizes and whoever wins just chooses what they fancy. But, if you think about it, even that way is better because the first winner out has a choice of everything on offer don’t they? Therefore getting the first prize first. This is just one of my grumps which is about a point of principle. What’s right is right isn’t it? One way to accommodate my type of complaint, yet keep the suspense factor, is to draw the tickets first, then announce them in reverse order. If you do this, be sure that the tickets cannot be switched or you will likely receive complaints. I still bought a couple of tickets, they still did it their way and I won sweet fanny adams as usual. Felon turned doomsday prophet, Jim Bakker, is selling ‘Donald Trump’ coins which he promises have special spiritual power. This guy is an ex-convict, accused rapist and TV evangelist. What he is claiming is that when believers hold the coin with Trump’s face, they are somehow magically united in prayer with everyone else and that creates a greater ‘point of contact’ with God. Idolatry, anybody? For the low, low price of $45 all this shameless superstition is all yours! God bless America!!
HERE’S one for you - I recently went to a function and during the evening I was offered the chance to buy some raffle tickets. There were three prizes. A week’s holiday was the first prize; the second was a meal at a posh restaurant and the third a case of nice wine. The tickets were not particularly cheap but then the prizes were OK and it was a good cause. But I had to ask my normal question which is what prize comes out first? She popped off for a second and then said, “its the normal way - third, second, first.” I then told her that’s the wrong way of doing it because everybody enters the raffle to have a chance of winning the first prize and if you draw the third prize first that cannot happen. She said, “But that’s the way we always do it.” It may well be and it’s always wrong. She then told me this is done to make it more exciting and to keep the suspense up. THE quiet dignity shown by Larry the cat on the doorstep of No 10 prior to Theresa May’s resignation speech is what I would wish for in the next prime minister. Before Theresa May could make the farewell speech, the stage first had to be made catfree. For 30 minutes, Larry the Downing Street mouser had sat on the doorstep, his back turned scornfully against the media as if to say: ‘What purrpuss do you serve? Are you fur real?’ before the door swung open and he was ushered inside. Theresa May led the Conservative party to a precipice; now that party is in danger of toppling over the edge. Its next leader has an unenviable task ahead. Bringing the party together will be as difficult as the Brexit negotiations, and the outcome just as unpredictable. Currently, everyone’s running in a selfindulgent leadership beauty parade. It’d be far easier if we had a list of MPs who AREN’T standing as candidates, it’d save time and space. And we can’t rule out the possibility Theresa May misreads the mood (again) and throws her hat into the ring. And heaven help us if Failing

LEGALLY SPEAKING Can they change their deed? Three years ago we bought a semi-detached villa in a community. The property is in fact bigger than our title deed says. We had a survey done and it shows that our property is 80 square metres bigger than the registered size. We would like to legalise this difference. It seems that we need a certificate from the community to show that no members oppose the change. When we asked the community administrator about this, he said it would be better if we do not do anything, just let it be. Or we have to wait 25 years. This does not make sense. M C (Costa del Sol)

Coolest transport since Mini MOKE Get the BMW badge on your E-scooter.
Nick Horne’s Morning Read Freelance correspondent, London, England VISITING Paris recently I was struck very nearly on several occasions by fast moving electric scooters. One in particular was bouncing across the cobbles on Place Vendome, the pilot clutching a large bag branded with a high end company’s logo. I did detect a chuckle emerging from my throat as I watched the jowls of this ardent shopper bouncing in counterpoint to the rest of his body as he made his way cross the cobbled square, the bag and its undoubtedly costly cargo waving to and fro. Later having had a slow and puzzled look at the Mona Lisa. Why does everyone who visits the Musee de Louvre in Paris have to tick that off the bucket list? Though we did too and rushed to the gallery itself and did so ahead of the crush. We then proceeded on to check in on the Venus de Milo and of course the Deity Athena dressed for war. As exhaustion, hunger and lunch was near I sat in a window seat in the Sully portion of the Palace and looking out across the enclosed courtyard spied an abandoned scooter. Alone in the midst of the vast courtyard the pilot stepped off and was nowhere to be seen in all of the lonely space. Over lunch we chatted mainly about the contents of the Musee de Louvre as well as the building itself, its facilities and the many art-
CONSULAR MATTERS JENS, my friend Peter’s brother, wants to come to live in Spain because after many years of hard work in a well-known supermarket in Copenhagen, he wants to have a warm retirement on our Costa Del Sol. Many of the foreigners who come to live in Spain decide to rent a house to establish their permanent residence, either because they prefer to rent and save their money or they want to spend some time and get to know the area before buying a property. Peter has instructed me to draft the rental contract because he has heard that during the last year the law relating to housing rental contract law has undergone what can only be described as roller coaster changes involving three new regulations in about four months. Since March 6, 2019 we have had a new regulation whose most important changes are also the least known, well at least by the tenants. The new law gives rights in favour of tenants who sign a lease after that date for their permanent residence.

The small wheels defy the cobbles and race across the tarmac roads of the city, the plank of a platform the spindly shaft of the steering column all lend a precarious air to the enterprise of travel. Yet there they are and I have no doubt are here to stay in Paris and spread, quite possibly worldwide. The scooters we saw in Paris were work a day implements, no doubt conforming to whatever regulations if any that pertain to this excit-
ing new transport phenomenon. It occurred to me it could not be long before an Important Brand would step into this space and lay claim and association to the coolest transport mode since the Mini MOKE. I have not had to wait very long. BMW have just announced their EScooter to launch in the autumn 2019. In cooperation with the Micro Mobility Systems AG. They say that their BMW E-Scooter will have a range of 12 kilometres and a top speed of 20 km/h. Two separate braking systems, front and rear lights, a space saving design that will allow it to be folded up and weighs in at just nine kilos including the battery. The 150 watt motor and lithium ion battery slip out of sight into the footplate and rear wheel. Taking two hours to fully charge it can be parked away neatly in space saving style on its integrated kickstand. Crucially of course this E-Scooter will also boast the classical blue BMW propeller logo! When you are asked what do you drive? ‘BMW,’ may well be the answer, even for the greenest most ecological. Hidden side of rental contracts
RENTAL CONTRACT: The law has undergone roller coaster changes. The first of this new regulation is that the law itself imposes on the landlord a minimum contract term of five years if the tenant so wishes. It is a right for tenants and an obligation for owners. Once the five-year contract has been completed, the
lease can be renewed for another three years if the tenant so wishes and notifies the landlord within the legally established time frame and in the event that the landlord has not reported the said contract extension. It also establishes the new word-
ing of the law that the annual increase in rent being paid can only be increased according to the official index standard of living (IPC) published by the INE (Spanish National Institute of Statistics). This index will operate as a maxi-
mum limit; therefore the rent being paid cannot be raised beyond the increase of said IPC. The intention of this law is to give some stability to tenants so that they can settle in a house with certain guarantees of permanence, but it is also true that this extension of the mandatory term of the lease and the limit that the law has put on raising the rent could cause landlords to think twice before renting their home and this could lead to a decrease in the number of houses available for permanent rental in our area where holiday rentals can be very attractive. We will have to wait a bit to see how this new regulation affects a seasonal market. These measures do not apply to leases of holiday homes, rural homes for farms or luxury homes, among others that are governed by other rules, but it is not Jens’ intention to rent one of these homes. Flight chaos
TO the Editor My friend was booked on to a low cost flight from Corvera to Leed’s Bradford on Friday, May 31 in the evening. After boarding, a technical fault meant the flight would be delayed, so they were disembarked and the baggage offloaded. They were informed that because the airport closed early on Fridays and Saturdays there would not be sufficient time to do the repair to meet the the closure time, and because of this the replacement aircraft would have to fly into Alicante. This meant they would not get to Leeds until the early hours of Saturday morning. I think I have my facts correct, and if so what a cowboy, village airstrip this herd of white elephants, this whole ill thought out, ego boosting money gobbling disaster has turned out to be. How’s it Leapy I APPLAUD your article on South Africa (Issue 1769). My wife and I were fortunate to have left SA two years ago and with me being UK born were welcomed into this lovely country we now live in. When I tell people about the life conditions in SA they look at me as if I’m talking gobbledy gook. The amount of farm murders, the couple who ran out of petrol last week who were shot dead for a mobile phone, SA has more road deaths over Christmas than the UK has for a whole year, the amount of unlicensed firearms, it’s worse than a war zone and nobody cares. Apartheid was started by a very short sighted man but what there is now, is Apartheid in reverse in a far worse state where you are forced to employ indigenous people, forced to have them in managerial positions, to have them as majority partners in your business and to have them in all sporting teams regardless of the consequences and or qualifications, you cannot employ the best qualified person, your business is allocated points for employment of black people, employment of coloured, Indian or whites gets you no points, not enough points no government or municipal work at all. I salute you for bringing some of the plight of all South Africans and Zimbabwians regardless of race or creed to light, it is the greedy ministers to blame. NEWS that anti-tourist graffiti appeared on the walls of Granada City last week has reignited the debate over the effects of an economically vital industry on Spanish locals. Spain’s tourism sector is the third largest contributor to the overall economy, accounting for about 10 per cent of total output (Gross Domestic Product, GDP) according to government figures. The industry is responsible for developing large swathes of the country’s Mediterranean coastline which expatriates now call home, as pictures of Benidorm from the 1950s and 1960s illustrate. Cities such as Granada also draw a hefty dividend from tourists who spend their money in local shops, bars and restaurants, benefiting the wider economy. The traffic of travellers into Spain has also helped to build bonds across borders and break down misconceptions held by tourists and locals about each other and their countries. But as with all aspects of the economy, the gains are seldom shared equally and the price of success for some is suffering for others. The Canary and Balearic islands are both home to anti-tourism movements who argue the industry has led to overdevelopment, harming their homes and the environment. In Barcelona the rise of holiday rentals has seen residents priced or even turfed out of neighbourhoods where they grew up because of the lure of profits from tourism. If tensions are to be eased then the benefits from the industry must be more widely shared and the impact on locals reduced.

Anti-tourist graffiti appears in Granada I live in a simple flat in a tourist hotspot on Mallorca. The residents pay their rents and feed their families because of doing business with the people visiting their small city. Only very few residents are against tourists. Typically those who hate foreigners in general. But, as I said, they are very few in number. Property prices in certain Spanish areas are not surging because of tourism, but because of big companies and rich individuals who are buying up property for investment purposes. controllable. If we can separate the emotion from our thinking, from our brain and literally just look at
the emotion from a distance - in a way examine it rationally - then we have a wonderful opportunity to see and feel that those emotions are not here to stay. It is not as easy done as said, but it can be done. And for those who know how to handle this there is a more peaceful life ahead. An example of how to do this is the next time you feel an emotion, use your brain, look at the emotion and ask yourself what kind it is. Look at the emotion from a distance. If it is fear for example, ask yourself where this fear is coming from. Because fear on its own does not really exist. With our brain we make something fearful, it comes from our past. What we have learned or experienced. Look at little children they have no fear. We as adults bring fear into their minds because we want to protect the children, maybe overprotect them. Our parents brought fear into
our minds. We can handle fear if we want to. Look differently towards it and experience it differently - even learn how not to accept it and let it go. We can control fear and make it something temporary. Another quote says: ‘Everything in life is temporary. So if things are going good, enjoy it because it won’t last forever. And if things are going bad, do not worry. It cannot last forever either.’ So dear friend, love life, now at this present moment. This is the moment that really exists. Enjoy it with a big smile on your face.

A NEW study has shown that a cup of blueberries a day could reduce the risk of heart disease by around 15 per cent. Research at the University of East Anglia found that 150 grams of the fruit could improve blood flow and reduce stiffness of arteries. The study looked at 138 overweight and obese adults aged between 50 and 75, and with a combination
of diabetes and high blood pressure. Scientists found the blueberries reduced their risk of heart disease by between 12 and 15 per cent over six months. Dr Peter Curtis, the s t u d y ’s c o - a u t h o r, s a i d : “We found eating one cup of blueberries per day resulted in sustained improvements in vascular function and arterial stiffness.”

A favourite tapa for all the Olive Tree family A FAVOURITE tapas for all the Olive Tree Farm family, when we go out, is fried aubergine, so I decided to have a go. There were a few recipes around the internet, but in the end, I decided to make batter the same way as I do for fish and chips. Usually I make beer batter for fish, but seeing as this is a dessert, I decided to use fizzy orange and it worked. The first couple of attempts were not quite right. The batter slid off too quickly. So again, I reverted back to how I make my fish and decided to dip the slices of aubergine in flour first and then batter before dropping into the oil. It worked. The batter stayed on and puffed up beautifully. A quick flip over with a slotted spoon to make sure both sides were golden, and within about a minute they were perfect!
FRIED AUBERGINE: When hot drizzle with honey. Here is how I made them. Ingredients Olive oil 1 fresh aubergine Salt Plain or self raising flour (about one - one and a half cups) plus extra for dusting Bicarbonate of soda (just a pinch)
Can of fizzy pop (I used orange pop) Clear honey to serve Method Slice the aubergine evenly into rings of about 5-8 mm. Lay the slices on a large plate and sprinkle with salt, layering them and salting as you go. Set aside and leave
for at least half an hour until you can see the liquid has been released. Drain, rinse well under cold water and then pat them dry using kitchen paper. Set aside. For the batter Put the flour into a mixing bowl, add a pinch of bicarbonate of soda, and then using a hand-held mixer slowly pour the pop into the bowl whilst mixing. Don’t add the whole can all at once. You need to mix as you go along until you get a nice smooth creamy batter with the texture of double cream. Heat your oil in a deep, frying pan, you need about 2-3 cm of oil. To test the heat, drizzle a little batter into the oil using a teaspoon, if it bubbles up, the oil is ready. Taking one slice of aubergine at a time, dip it in the extra flour for dusting, to coat both sides, then coat in the batter, then carefully drop into the oil. You should be able to do three or four slices at a time, but don’t put too many in at once. Flip them over to make sure both sides are golden and remove from the pan and sit on kitchen paper to remove excess oil as you carry on cooking them. You want two to three slices per serving. Serve immediately, whilst still hot and crispy, drizzle with honey.
OLIVE TREE FARM was set up about four years ago with the intention of achieving a level of self sufficiency. We have poultry for meat and eggs, goats for milk, rabbits and small pigs for meat and harvest our 70 olive trees each year for oil. We also grow a variety of fruits and vegetables.

ON eBay I recently found a book I once wrote priced at €20. They also had another copy in the same condition, but this time with an added cachet: it was signed by the author. And cost €5 less. This humbling discovery set me to remembering the extent of that book’s original text. It was written on a simple DOS-based word-processor, and the entire text occupied a minuscule 532 KB - half a megabyte! Megabytes? Remember those before we all went gaga on gigas, teras and petas? When storage was so precious (and of course men were men and we all lived in cardboard boxes), a Sinclair ZX chess game didn’t even need 1KB to run (487 bytes is still apparently the world record). These days my toothbrush needs a thousand times that just to log its bedtime routine. Once the floppy disk and then the writeable CD bit the digital dust we became hugely cavalier w ith t h e sh e e r v o lu mes o f th e

flash drives and SD cards to back up, but despite ever-decreasing prices and ever-increasing capacities, the best bang f or your backup buck is still an external (USB) harddrive. What ever m edi um you choose ( and t he accompanying panel m i ght hel p) , don’t make the fundamental error I committed those many years ago: keeping your backup wi t h your com put er. Store it somewhere ‘off-site,’ even with a neighbour for safety. I didn’t - until a fire consumed both my computer and its backup on the same desk. So now if I want to see what I actually wrote back then it’s going to cost me that €20. Or €5 less for the signed copy.

Although Sanchez is a socialist and Macron a liberal, they hope to join forces to prevent the European People’s Party - the Partido Popular to you and me - from tak-
ing over the European Commission. With 20 seats, the Spanish PSOE has more than any other socialist party in the European Parliament and the same goes for Macron’s 21 Renaissance seats. After 15 years of conservative domination, they want socialists and liberals to introduce a more progressive U agenda. And all the while, Sanchez will
be looking over his shoulder at Albert Rivera and Ciudadanos as if to say, ‘See, this is the way to do it.’

HDD or SSD is the question WHAT should it be: a cheaper, heavier HDD, or the newer, more expensive but far faster SSD? Megabyte for megabyte the clunky old mechanical beasts are still the best bargain, but the gap is narrowing fast. And as a general rule of thumb, the bigger (ie higher capacity) drive you buy, the cheaper it gets per megabyte of storage. One thing you can safely ignore is the hoary old warning that solid-state storage wears out fast. Yes it can survive fewer read and write cycles than its mechanical predecessor, but these days that’s almost irrelevant. Some SSDs now have a 10-year warranty, and experts reckoned that one new model just out will last the average Joe 114 years. I’m not counting on outliving mine.
Pablo Iglesias. Podemos lost seats everywhere and instead of tipping the balance to the Left on councils and regional governments, in many cases it is handing that privilege to Vox. Predictably, Iglesias continues to believe that he could, and should, occupy a seat in a future PSOE government in return for his 42 parliamentary seats. His reasons are nebulous, but his motives are as obvious as his sense of entitlement.
Time to go SAD to say, although it’s no surprise, Juan Carlos I’s time is up. He will no longer take part in public life, he announced. And quite right too. He was what Spain needed in 1975 after Franco died when he, Fernando Alvarez de Miranda, Adolfo Suarez and a few others piloted Spain into the safe haven of democracy. He was what Spain needed when he pulled rank on military plotters and defused the attempted coup of February 23, 1981. But his usefulness is at an end and at 81 the Bourbon king can lead a peaceful life hunting - elephants (possibly) included - with afternoons at the bullring and, who knows, the company of someone not his wife. But Juan Carlos’s time is up and, always aware of what is needed, he knows he has nothing left to contribute and it’s time to go.

Charging ahead with Go Electric BUSINESSES in the Almanzora Valley are charging ahead with plans to make the region an attractive destination for electric car drivers. Electric vehicle charge points have now been installed at a tourist complex in Laroya, the first under the Valle del Almanzora Tourism Company Association’s ‘Go Electric’ initiative. One of the points is exclusively for Tesla vehicles. The other is valid for any kind of electric car on the market. The use of both charge points is free to the establishment’s guests. The business association expects 20 charge points to be established in the Almanzora Valley this year at restaurants, shops, hotels, hostels and on public roads.

Final project starts THE final Almeria Council work projects to improve infrastructure in Macael are set to start. The provincial administration’s Government Council has given the green light to allocating the contract for upgrades on the central Avenida de La Viña. The €188,000 investment will cover improvements to road markings, new paving, storm drains and drainage, as well as street lighting and improved accessibility in the Plaza del Monumento al Cantero area. The avenue is an important and busy thor-
oughfare, on which the Las Canteras infant and primary school is located. A further measure will be signals advising of the proximity of the school. Additional works will be carried out on the Plaza del Monumento al Cantero, which pays homage to quarry workers. The Almeria Council has invested over €1 million overall in measures in the town, which provincial Development deputy Oscar Liria said “had improved the quality of life of Macael residents.”

The association described music as ‘the universal language par excellence,’ and said it wanted to ‘pay homage to one of the oldest arts in the world.’ The festival will feature performances of a variety of musical genres, including soul, blues, rock, flamenco fusion and reggae. By David Worboys IF you were given the choice of the best era for your lifespan (80 years) which would you go for? It surely depends on whether you value material and technological advancement over moral and spiritual decline. I was born in 1939 just before the second outbreak of hostilities in Europe. The 40’s were years of war and sacrifice followed by years of deprivation and recovery. We spent the summer holidays on my grandparents’ farm in rural Bedfordshire. The house was lit by candles and heated by a fire in a grate with coke and newspapers. Our water came from the single village pump up the street where there was a solitary phone box, and the ‘bog’ was outside in the farmyard. We had a tin bath for personal hygiene and a mangle for rinsing the washing. We would return to Buckinghamshire after the holidays where there was electricity, running water, a flushing loo, a bath with taps - and, eventually, a washing machine. The next 70 years saw changes beyond our imagination. Many in-

In the 50’s, computers and air conditioning were the preserve of only the major companies while only the more affluent could afford televisions, washing machines, refrigera-
tors and heaters in their cars. By the 80’s there were also numerous facilities which now seem indispensable. Personal computers, colour television, automatic transmission, remote control, automatic check-outs and credit cards. Today we benefit from inventions and technological breakthroughs
which were simply inconceivable in the 40’s. The use of DNA for tracking criminals, genetics and genealogy, the worldwide web, keyhole surgery, the smartphone, non-stop flights across the world, factory and domestic robots, and camera surveillance. There are driverless cars, artifi-
cial intelligence, facial and voice recognition, sensors and remote control. However, our planet has gradually become a less stable place. The 50’s were an age of continuing innocence and tolerance followed by the swinging 60’s of free sex and the emergence of drugs. In subsequent decades traditions and standards began to disappear. Discipline, humour and common courtesies declined and the family unit began to break up. Confusion over sex began in the 90’s. Thanks to climate change, illegal hunting and factory farming, thousands of species of animal are endangered - as is the very existence of Earth and its inhabitants. We have seen a rise in terrorism increasing the risks to everyday life from Norway to New Zealand. Prior to 1939 there were too few home comforts and human rights. After 2019, there is confusion about so many aspects of the world we live in - and its continued existence. My conclusion is that our generation got it right.
Travel MENTION the Balearic Islands in conversation with anyone and the majority of people will immediately only think of Mallorca and Ibiza. However, geography students and travel experts will know that their often forgotten neighbours of Menorca and Formentera have their own individual attractions on offer. Menorca (or Minorca) takes its name from its size when contrasting it to the nearby island of Mallorca. With a population of roughly 95,000, Menorca is particularly well known for its traditional summer fiestas, with the biggest held at the end of June during the ‘Festes de Sant Joan.’ Spanish fiestas in general are known for their strange and unusual traditions that are often on display during their local parades, and Menorca certainly has one of the more off-beat among them. On the first day of the three-day festival, a man carries a freshly groomed sheep on his shoulders and parades it around the streets! The production of wine has been a major part of the local

It is believed that its name derives from the Latin word ‘frumentarium’ which means granary, and many time-served tourists say that Formentera is ‘what Ibiza was 20 years ago.’ Extra connections from the Spanish mainland and inter-islands have developed the tourist trade although still remains popular for naturists who use the long sandy beaches for an ‘all-over tan.’

Go out there and do one or two single family home deals yourself. It doesn’t matter if you make huge profits to start off with. If you can manage to show positive cash flow with your single family home deals you are ahead of the pack, plus you will have collateral for future loans. So, buy a small single family home in a decent neighbourhood and rent it immediately. This will keep your out of the pocket expenses at a minimum and you will have rent income to cover your monthly expenses. And as a bonus, you gain experience as an investor and as a landlord.

ROAD TEST by Nick Fletcher SUZUKI’S tiny four-wheeldrive Jimny has been around for many years in virtually unchanged form, but now there is an all-new version which looks less cute and more formidable. The new Jimny is still very small but has more purposeful styling and even looks quite cool, an important element in an image-conscious market. It still has selectable 4WD with low-ratio transfer box which means it is amazingly capable off-road, often able to venture into terrain that larger 4WD models cannot cope with. Powered by a 1.5 litre 100 hp petrol engine and fivespeed manual gearbox (there is a four-speed auto option), the Jimny has a 0-100 kph time of 12 seconds and top speed of 150 kph (90 mph). Average fuel economy is 14.7 kpl (41.5 mpg) and emissions are 154 g/km. Prices start at €17,583 (£15,499), though my topspec SZ5 Allgrip test version cost €20,420 (£17,999) and

The cabin is narrow but functional, with good dashboard layout and comfortable seating.The two rear seats will accommodate adults, but luggage space is then very limited at just 85 litres. But with the rear seats down flat, the load space is 377 litres litres, larger than in the pre-
vious Jimny. There is very little cabin stowage space - a tiny glove-box, very slim door pockets and a couple of cup holders is about all you get. The Jimny can double as a neat, versatile rural vehicle with strong off-road and towing ability, or as a practical and nimble city car with eye-catching cachet. On tarmac, ride quality is firm but quite acceptable and the handling is agile thanks to revised steering which gives much-improved feedback and a greater sense of control. I found the four-speed auto transmission rather over-busy but most buyers will go for the slick manual gearbox. The previous Jimny had a lot of friends, selling almost three million worldwide, and this updated and enhanced version will attract many more to the Suzuki brand. The Jimny looks good, drives well, and there is nothing truly comparable or as capable at the price.

NISSAN’S plant in Barcelona’s Zona Franca has had its future guaranteed, but it comes at the cost of 600 jobs. Nissan’s management and unions reached an agreement to maintain the viability of the factory, but it involves cutting the workforce. The departures will be made through early retirements with the rest in voluntary redundancies. Those taking early retirement will get 85 per cent of net salary until official retirement at age 63. Those applying for voluntary redundancy will be paid €50,000 net on top of their legally entitled compensation. Workers will also receive a pay rise of 4 per cent over the next three years. This agreement unblocked Nissan’s plan to invest €70 million over the next two years in a new paint plant, as current facilities were on the verge of failing stricter environmental regulations. This will enable the company to allocate another model for assembly at the factory within the next two years.

A concept reinvented... By Dilip Kuner AS concept cars go, it is not exactly futuristic. But it is drop dead gorgeous. The BMW Group is taking the occasion of this year’s Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este to unveil the recreation of the BMW Garmisch, a classic concept car that was designed by Marcello Gandini for Bertone and vanished after its debut at the Geneva Motor Show in 1970. “Marcello Gandini to me is one of the grandmasters of car design and his cars always have been an important source of inspiration for my work,” says Adrian van Hooydonk, Senior Vice President of BMW Group Design, who has been intrigued by the BMW Garmisch since he first discovered a faded period picture of the car some years ago. “Building the BMW Garmisch for a second time gave us the opportunity to
pay tribute to Mr Gandini, recall one of his lesser-known cars and highlight Bertone’s stylistic influence on the evolution of BMW design. For me, that alone was reason enough to do this project - filling in the gaps and completing BMW’s history.” The original BMW Garmisch was developed by Bertone as an independent design proposal intended to demonstrate the studio’s creativity. “The original idea came from Nuccio Bertone himself who wanted to consolidate our existing relationship with BMW by designing a surprise show car for the Geneva Motor Show,” remembers Marcello Gandini, who was in charge of Bertone’s design department at the time. “We wanted to create a modern midsized coupe that was faithful to BMW’s design language, but that was also more dynamic and even a bit
provocative.” While the side profile of the car was very sleek and clean, the most distinctive design feature of the BMW Garmisch was its bold, vertical and almost angular variation of BMW’s kidney-shaped radiator grill, which was flanked by square glass-covered headlights. Other unusual details included sports car-like louvres on the C-pillars and the honeycomb-patterned mesh cover for the rear window - a trademark element of Marcello Gandini’s style. Being faithful to the original car, the new BMW Garmisch is also a showcase of BMW’s expertise in design research and prototype building. As original documents of the BMW Garmisch were sparse, the design team had to retrace every detail of the car’s exterior and interior from a small selection of

Marcello Gandini himself contributed to the research process with memories from the creation of the car, allowing the design team to refabricate key details such as the exterior colour a light champagne metallic in line with Italian fashion trends of the time - and the interior materials and trim. And while the BMW Design team used the latest 3D modelling technolo-
gies to revive and specify the original structures and shapes, the BMW Garmisch was coachbuilt by skilled craftsmen in Turin - just like the original car almost 50 years ago. “When I first heard that BMW wanted to recreate the BMW Garmisch, I was a bit surprised,” Marcello Gandini recalls of his first meeting with Adrian van Hooydonk, who visited him in Turin in the summer of 2018 to ask for his approval. “Now I am very pleased that I was able to be part of this project and happy that BMW chose to recall this enjoyable past. Having seen the final car, it is hard for me to even distinguish it from the original.”

CHARITY EVENT։ The day’s golf raised €1,119.
A great day of fundraising golf MOJACAR Royal British Legion held the branch’s third charity golf day at Aguilon Golf Club, raising €1,119 for the Poppy Appeal. This Stableford event on Saturday May 25 saw 76 golfers enjoying a great day of golf. The course was in very good condition and the weather mild. Once again, the event was organised by Branch Welfare officer Alan White and his wife Christine, the branch secretary. Branch Chairman Andrew Richardson presented the prizes. The winner of the Men’s (Yellow Tee) with 39 points was Jock Glynn. Geoff Ashton was runner up with 38 points. Ladies’ winner (Red Tee) with 40 points was Emma Rundle, and runner up was Jean Preston with 35 points. The winner of the Blue Tee was Therese Stahl with 38 points. Dave Pramod was runner up with 37 points. The team winners were Team Pramod Dave. The branch issued thanks to the organisers, the hosts and sponsors Aguilon Golf, Ibex Insurance, all those who took part and the numerous other sponsors for their continued support.
