Costa del Cleanup THE efforts of Alicante Province police to trace and detain foreign fugitives are bearing fruit after figures showed arrests on international warrants are second only to Spain’s capital. Latest figures show that only Madrid topped Alicante Province for the number of suspected criminals detained under European and international arrest warrants. The province saw 88 people picked up by police on international arrest warrants in 2018, compared to Madrid’s 164. Figures also showed the number of fugitives arrested in Alicante Province rose from 76 in 2017. Malaga Province, which was dubbed the Costa del Crime by the British tabloid press due to its reputation as a haven for wanted criminals, saw 77 warrants executed.
DETAINED: Lei Beumount was arrested in Calpe. It comes as Leonardus Lei Beumount, a Danish national aged 71, was arrested in the north of Alicante Province. He had been sentenced to life in abstentia for shooting his ex-wife in 2009. Nationally there were 915 arrests on international warrants, up from 750 seen in 2017.

AN environmental scientist working at the Mar Menor in Murcia has warned the waters of the lagoon could soon be in an ‘alarming’ state due to the dumping of waste. Angel Perez Ruzafa, of the Mar Menor scientific committee, said that while the lagoon’s waters had not turned to ‘green soup’ as some have claimed, it risks becoming more polluted. ORIHUELA now has its own ‘Senior Association,’ a collective aiming to defend the dignity of the elderly and promoting relevant cultural and leisure activities. The Board is made up of 12 people and although brand new, there are already 148 members - with more being added regularly. In Orihuela, 30 per cent of registered citizens are over 60 years old, hence the importance of solidarity. A spokesman said, “We are born to defend the right and dignity of the elderly as well as promoting leisure or cultural activities.” The mayor of Orihuela, Emilio Bascuñana, along with colleagues from Social Welfare and Festivities, attended the launch. He stressed, “It is a necessary project for Orihuela and it will be beneficial for the municipality.”
Lagoon warning means the situation could be reversed, the scientist added. “The Mar Menor is not only s u ff e r i n g f r o m w a s t e s p i l l s b u t from political spills and information spills,” Perez Ruzafa said. The scientist added the condition of the lagoon was now on a
‘knife edge.’ “But we have detected high levels of nitrates from agricultural spills and phosphates which suggests we need to pay attention to the cleaning of water storage tanks, purifiers and garages,” he said.
The Mar Menor lagoon is home to several animal and plant species. The Mar Menor Pact campaign group has also recently complained of spills at points including the Carrion beach in Los Alcazares and La Rambla de El Albujon.

Region celebrates THIS picture of the Santa Maria Cathedral in Murcia comes as the city’s region celebrates is annual holiday this Monday (June 10). The Murcia Region covers an area of about 11,313 square kilometres, about 2.2 per cent of the Spanish landmass. It is home to almost 1.5 million people, roughly a third of which live in its capital, Murcia City. The region has a warm, arid climate and water transfers from nearby rivers have supported its farming industry. It is home to the Mar Menor lagoon, a 170-square-kilometre body of
water known for its diverse marine life. Ancestors of modern-day humans have inhabited what is now the Murcia Region for around one million years. Phoenician settlers from North Africa arrived in the 3rd century BC and founded a city which the Romans named Cartago Nova after their conquest of the Iberian Peninsula. The modern-day city of Cartagena stands on its site. The area was later ruled by the Visigoths and then the Islamic Moors
during the Middle Ages, before becoming the independent Kingdom of Murcia in the 11th century. The region fell to the Kingdom of Castile in 1243. The region grew economically in following years and enjoyed a mining boom in the 19th century. Cartagena was a key Spanish naval base from the 16th century onwards. Work on the Santa Maria Cathedral (pictured) finished in 1465 after beginning in 1394. The 90-metre-tall bell tower was built between 1521 and 1791.

Police visited the woman and discovered she had not noticed the bank book had gone missing. Saying she hardly ever went to the bank as she was disabled by a chronic illness. Guardia Civil then found she had only €28 left in the account, with €12,500 missing. Police traced the woman’s carer - a 42-year-old woman who admitted that she and her 43-year-old boyfriend had been withdrawing cash from the account since last year.

Thieving carers A COUPLE who allegedly emptied the bank account of an 83-year-old woman they cared for has been arrested. An investigation began w h e n a To r r e v i e j a p r o p e r t y owner complained to police when his tenant disappeared owing several months rent. The landlord handed over to police a bank book amongst other items left behind. Police noticed it was in a different name to the tenant and found it belonged to an elderly woman.

TORREVIEJA has been recognised by the Worldwide Fund For Nature (WWF) Spain for its support with ‘Earth Hour 2019,’ which raises awareness about energy waste. Every year, towns and cities across the world turn off as many lights as they can as a symbolic gesture in the fight against climate change. The campaign started in Sydney in 2007, with this year ’s Earth Hour taking place on April 30, with a number of Torrevieja municipal sites ‘going dark’ at 8.30pm. More than 188 countries now take part, and the event is seen as one of the biggest for raising environmental awareness. The mayor of Los Verdes, José Manuel Dolón, was delighted w i t h t h e o ff i c i a l r e c o g n i t i o n f r o m o n e o f t h e m o s t r e c o g n i s e d conservationist organisations in the world, while inviting all citizens to be respectful of the planet and avoiding excessive spending on energy.

‘Hidden camera’ claim A TRADE UNION representing medical staff has complained after a camera was allegedly found hidden in a Murcia City hospital. Redes said labour inspectors had removed the camera after it was found in the security control room of the Reina Sofia Hospital. It was found during works in the room hidden next to a smoke alarm, according to the union. The union claimed the privacy of security
staff and other workers had been violated as the room was used to store their belongings and as a rest area. Clothing was stored there and workers sometimes used the room to change, Redes added. “Workers do not know about the intended use of the recorded images or the treatment of their data once it is collected because it was hidden,” the union said.

Minute’s silence for victim BENIDORM Council held a minute’s silence in memory of the latest victim of gender violence, a woman murdered i n t h e t o wn o f Agüimes, in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. PROHIBITED: Barbecues and fires are now banned in Murcia parks.
Murcia BBQ ban A SUMMER long ban on barbecues and agricultural fires is now in place through the Murcia area, a move justified by a recent fire in Ojos, about 37 kilometres north of the region’s capital. With summer now upon us, and much of the region under a yellow risk status, the local government has confirmed that a ban is now in place on the lighting of fires and barbecues in recreational parks. In addition, the cessation of agricultural burning has also
been ordered. The ban will be enforced until September 30, with the authorities hoping that the successes of last year will be repeated, when only four large fires were reported - the lowest for 20 years. The move affects the parks of Sierra Espuna, Calblanque, San Pedro del Pintar and El Valle y Carrascoy. Those wanting to burn agricultural waste must apply for a permit, safety standards permitting.

A summer of sport LOS MONTESINOS has announced a programme of sport throughout the summer that will include adults as much as children. The mayor said: “We are aware of the need for family and work-life balance and to enjoy summer, to play sports is a pleasure and a priority for our physical and mental health.”
Local goalkeeper Hector Pizana (ex Valencia and Albacete) will help with training. As well as football camps, other activities include swimming courses, aqua aerobics, tennis, rock climbing, skating, in addition to excursions and camping. Registration for all activities can be done in the city hall.
Rock school MUSIC fans will be keen to know that Torrevieja is holding a summer course entitled ‘Rock and Roll: The business of contemporary music,’ taking place from July 22 to 26 at the Virgen del Carmen Cultural Centre. It will focus on business management and elements of innovation, production, marketing and taxation. The subsidised course is aimed at entrepreneurs, managers and music professionals, as well as students.
In addition, it is open to people who are aiming to start professionally in the music business, and to fans of music in general. The coordinating prof e s s o r, A n t o n i n o M a r t í n Palacios, said: “The most curious element of this course is to learn from marketing, how large rock groups convert fans into customers in their fans.” He cited The Rolling Stones as a great example. Confirmed speakers include music journalists, concert producers and artist managers.

Child’s life saving transplant EGYPTIAN Naila Avilés Coveña is expected to be heading to Spain to undergo a lifesaving bone marrow transplant. Naila was diagnosed with the cancer of the blood leukaemia and after a long battle with chemotherapy is now in the process of organising a final attempt to cure the disease. Fundraising attempts have been successful in covering the costs of the transplant through organisations such as FELL and FANO. Telethons and online fundraising have allowed the family to also purchase the tickets to travel. They now await visa applications and the final documents allowing them to travel. Naila’s uncle Edwin Coveña is eager for his niece to attempt the surgery. He said “she recovers (sometimes), but the chemotherapy is killing her because it damages her good cells and they told us that she needs a bone marrow transplant.” Now, their families need the economic resources to cover the expenses of the stay between one and two years in Spain for the child and her mother Cecibel Coveña.

By Joe Gerrard SPAIN marked one year since the left-leaning Partido Socialista (PSOE) took power following a successful motion of no confidence, with the party again reaching out to build a majority. PSOE’s Meritxell Batet, the new President of the Congress of Deputies, met with King Felipe on Monday to open talks on reaching a settlement among lawmakers. The two will also seek a path for acting Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez to stay on in the post as per Constitutional arrangements for choosing governments following elections. In echoes of manoeuvres which brought Sanchez and the PSOE to power a year ago, the support of some smaller, regionalist parties will be needed for an absolute majority. PSOE is in a stronger position following the recent rounds of elections which left it the largest party in the Cortes by some margin. The party may be able to rid it-

DEALS: PSOE is seeking a working majority in Congress. self from a dependence on proCatalan independence groups which effectively brought down his minority government earlier this year. The party’s claim to power is also strengthened by positive EU election results and a broadly successful showing in local and regional elections. Some of the regional groups who helped Sanchez oust his con-
servative Partido Popular (PP) predecessor Mariano Rajoy have signalled they will work with him again. The Basque Partido Nacionalista Vasco (PNV) has said it would be willing to support PSOE. But its condition is thought to be that PSOE rules out working with the centrist Ciudadanos, who they see as a threat to their demands for
greater self-rule. This shows that Sanchez and PSOE will have to navigate their way through a tangled web of demands, animosities and rivalries in order to build a working majority. The path looked smoother prior to the May elections when it looked likely that PSOE would strike a deal with the leftist Podemos. But that party’s poor showing in those elections robbed them of their leverage, freeing up PSOE to consider more options. The most straightforward option for Sanchez remains working with Ciudadanos. The two parties have a combined total of 180 seats in Congress, four more than is needed for a majority. But there is little appetite for the pact amongst PSOE members and, as the case of PNV shows, Sanchez would risk alienating other parties.

Glimpsing the future There is currently a crowded field of candidates hoping to bag the party’s top job and the keys to 10 Downing Street. A
total of 13 candidates are standing, with all having held some previous ministerial experience. The debate surrounding the race has already been moved in a hard Brexit direction. This is largely down to the mood among Conservative members who are by and large in favour of Britain leaving the EU. About 59 per cent of members voted for Nigel Farage’s Brexit Party in recent European Parliament elections, according to a YouGov poll. Those roughly 124,000 members will choose from the two most popular candidates after a series of run-off votes amongst Conservative MPs. The discussion has quickly turned to what is likely to be a red line for many members, the attitude of each candidate towards a no-deal Brexit. Current frontrunner Boris Johnson, former Brexit Secretary Dominic Raab, ex-Leader

TRAGIC: Day to the beach ended in death.
Road tragedy TWO young men and a woman aged between 17 and 18 were killed in a car smash as they returned from a day on the beach. The three - at a school in Pontevedra (Galicia) - were backseat passengers in a Peugeot 207 when the car left the road on the AP-9 motorway. It hit the guard rail, then a post and came to rest in the central reservation. Medics, firefighters from Vigo and Miño, the Guardia Civil and Local Police attended, but could
not save the victims. The car driver and front seat passenger were taken to hospital with serious, but not life threatening, injuries. All five were classmates who had recently graduated. The mayor of their hometown of Redondela decreed two days of mourning, with the town hall flying flags at half-mast. Councillor for Traffic Arturo Gonzalez described the victims as “good people, good students, some sportsmen.”

Danger spider By Dilip Kuner A MAN was hospitalised for 10 days after being bitten by a spider whose venom is 15 times more toxic than that of a cobra. Manuel Gil from Elda, Alicante, sought medical help after he was bitten and the wound became infected. Although he has now returned home, he still has necrosis in his leg and may face an operation if antibiotics fail to solve the problem. A couple from Sax and a woman from Elda have also needed medical attention after being bitten by a Chilean Recluse spider, known in Spain as brown or corner spiders. One of the women, Miranda Navarro, has been attending a health centre for a month and a half to have her bite treated and prevent it from becoming infected. Sustainability study RESEARCHERS have completed a study into the sustainability and well-being of thousands of protected areas throughout Spain. David Rodriquez and Javier Martinez’s Sustainability and Protected Areas in Spain book is being published as part of a wider project
from the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC). The book covers natural habitats, species and human factors in the 3,823 protected areas that make up more than 27 per cent of the Spanish landmass.

‘Game of death’ SPANISH police are warning parents to watch out for a potentially lethal ‘game of death’ spotted in schools. Youngsters are taping scenes where one child is pounced on from behind and strangled until they apparently lose consciousness. The video is then posted and shared on social media. Now Granada Local Police have sent one offending video to the Public Prosecutor’s Office for Minors. In it a group of children from a school in the Andalucian city practis-
es the game. Police sources say they are investigating to identify and take statements from the children involved to determine whether they took part in it voluntarily. Sources from the National Police say this game involves a high level of risk and want to raise awareness of the ‘serious consequences’ it can cause, including death. Granada Local Police on Tuesday posted on its Twitter account a video of two young people playing the game and asked parents to check their children’s mobile phones.

TRAPPED: Firefighters had to rescue the children from the monorail.
Schoolchildren rescued PALMA (Mallorca) firemen had to rescue 48 children from a monorail train that broke down on an elevated section. The youngsters from the IES Jafuda Cresques secondary school were stuck for an hour and a half at a height
of about eight metres in Son Reus when their school trip went wrong. Bombers de Palma firefighters used an elevated platform to bring the students and three adults to safety. The children had been vis-
iting the Centre d’Educació Ambiental of TIRME (Environmental Education Centre). The visit was supposed to be concluded with a short train ride around the campus. Instead the youngsters ended up with a ride in a fire engine.

TWO BODIES: Found in an apartment in Calle Rio Retortillo, Las Lagunas.
Police find two bodies in apartment POLICE officers found two bodies in an apartment in Mijas on the Costa del Sol after receiving alerts of a strong smell. Guardia Civil officers are investigating the death of the two people whose bodies were found decomposing. According to investigators, they could have been dead for
at least three or four days. The remains are thought to be of a 26-year-old woman and a 34-year-old man, both of whom were Finnish. They were found last Thursday at 1.15pm in an apartment in Calle Rio Retortillo in Las Lagunas. It was initially thought the bodies were of a
couple, but the neighbours confirmed the woman had a boyfriend with whom she rented the apartment. This man has not yet been located but a neighbour claimed that she saw him entering the building on Wednesday, after the death of the pair. The investigation rests on the post-mortem.

Speed traps SPAIN’S vehicles department has warned of the nine types of traffic cameras which can issue fines. The DGT explained there are multiple ways police can now track and penalise drivers, including

Marine mammal rescue THE Department of the Environment, Heritage and Climate Change (DEHCC) at the HM Government of Gibraltar undertook a marine mammal rescue course, organised and accredited by the British Divers Marine Life Rescue (BDMLR). BDMLR is an organisation dedicated to the rescue and well-being of all marine animals in distress around the UK.
It is a voluntary network of trained marine mammal medics who respond to call outs from the general public, HM Coastguard, police, RSPCA and SSPCA. BDMLR is the only marine animal rescue organisation in England, Wales and Scotland. In addition to acting as a first point of call by the other emergency services, the organisation also trains their staff.

Beach tragedy A FIVE-YEAR-OLD girl drowned on Spain’s Costa Dorada after she was blown out to sea on an inflatable. She was on a family holiday from Georgia when tragedy struck on the beach of La Pineda, in the municipality of Vilaseca (Tarragona). According to the emergency services the little girl was swept out 200 metres from the shore by stong winds and waves. Local Police, Maritime Rescue and Red Cross were involved in an attempted rescue, but by the time they reached her she had slipped off the inflatable and was already unconscious. A Red Cross boat took her out of the water and brought her to the port, where medics attempted to resuscitate her for an hour, but to no avail.

Access denied By Joe Gerrard THE European Parliament has refused to give a provisional pass to the former president of Cataluña after being elected as an MEP. Carles Puidgemont, of the pro-independence Junts per Cataluyna, arrived at the parliament in Brussels to collect his pass last week. He was reportedly refused
entry after three Spanish parties asked the European Parliament not to issue passes for MEPs until they had formally taken office in Spain. Puigdemont said he and pro-independence figures would not allow themselves and their supports to be ignored. “We won the elections in Cataluña but the ‘democratic’ general secretary of the Euro-
pean Parliament considers that our voters are less respectable than the rest,” he said. An arrest warrant for sedition and rebellion remains active in Spain for Puigdemont over the 2017 independence push, meaning he would be detained if he returned. The former Catalan president fled Spain shortly after the warrant was issued in October last year.

Psychosis conference Bullfighter in ‘revenge porn’ row COMMENTS from a Spanish bullfighter about a woman who featured in a widely-shared sex video’s suicide have been criticised after he suggested men cannot watch such footage without sharing it. Fran Rivera said it was not ‘manly’ to let videos of that kind go viral and added the woman was not to blame. “But men, and I say this because I’m a man, we’re unable to have such a video and not share it,” Rivera said. It comes after Veronica Rubio, 32, took her own life days after an intimate video of her was shared by work colleagues. The mother-of-two hung herself a day after her husband saw the video which was made about five years earlier when she was unmarried. It is believed to be a case of ‘revenge porn,’ sex videos of

Nationwide clean up THOUSANDS of volunteers are set to clear rubbish from natural areas across Spain on Saturday June 15. The One Metre Squared by Nature clean-up is taking place for the third time this year. It first began in 2017 and is supported by the Spanish Ornithological Society (SEO) bird charity and the Ecoembes environmental group. Sara Guemes, of Ecoembes, said the organisation would only consider itself successful when people were able to visit
natural areas without coming across rubbish. “The amount of rubbish is not only a wake-up call, it is a call to action. This is a global problem, we need to reduce consumption and reuse and recycle,” Guemes said. Organisers said they hope to surpass the 11,000 volunteers who took part in last year’s clean-up. The first collection in 2017 saw around 5,000 volunteers clear more than 30 tons of rubbish in 48 provinces, organisers said.

Driving licences in Spain LIVING in Spain can bring with it an array of issues which may not have been encountered when living in the UK. There are lots of things to consider, and we are here to help try to make the transition and life in Spain a little easier by compiling a series of helpful facts and figures relating to a variety of topics. If you are planning on living in Spain on a permanent basis, it’s a good idea to have a Spanish driving licence - in fact it is mandatory after a while. Here are some guidelines for current and new drivers on how to do this quickly and easily. If you already have a valid EU (European Union) Community or an EEA (European Economic Area) driving licence and meet the minimum driving age in Spain, you can use it for the first two years of residence in Spain, although you must register your details with the traffic authorities after six months. You can register at your Central Register of Drivers and Minor Offenders of the Provincial Traffic Headquarters. If you don’t obtain a Spanish driver’s licence after two years of residence in Spain and are caught driving, you can face a fine of around €200. Visit: www.dgt.es to find out more. Once the process is under way, you will have to adhere to the same conditions as Spanish licence holders: Have reached minimum age in Spain for the specific category of vehicle you want to drive, Relevant medical checks, Renew or exchange the licence after the first two years’ residence in Spain. If an EU licence is renewed in Spain it effectively converts it into a Spanish EU licence, which then needs to be renewed every 10 years up to the age of 65, and every five years after 65. The new regulation which requires new residents to exchange their licences for a Spanish one, was enforced three years ago. As such, Spain has agreements with more than 20 countries, allowing drivers to exchange a foreign driver’s licence for its equivalent. To find out more, check with your home country’s consulate in Spain or the Spanish Traffic Authority at www.sede.dgt.gob.es. To exchange your licence, you will need to fill out an application form that is issued by the Provincial Traffic Headquarters. (See the above website). The following documents will be required: Proof of identity (original passport and a copy), Proof of your residence for six months (Certificate of Registration in the Central Aliens Register - the NIE number), Application form (in Spanish), Current valid driving licence to be exchanged (original and a copy), Written declaration stating that you don’t have another driving licence of the same class in another country, Written declaration stating that you have not been suspended or banned, Two recent passport size photographs (32 by 25 mm), Medical fitness report (visit the DGT website for information). For new drivers, check the legal driving ages and permit types before you register. You can get details depending on what type of vehicle you want to drive by visiting: English-driving-school.com. The best option (for new drivers) is to go to a driving school as they take care of the registration process with the Jefatura (Jefatura Provincial de Trafico) on your behalf. A month of celebration IF there is one town that k n o w s h o w t o p a r t y i t ’s Catral which is getting ready for the famous Chupinazo Festival which takes place this Saturday June 8. This is jus t the s ta rt of almost a whole month of celebration to honour St John the Baptist (San Juan Bautista). The launch of the Chupinazo (a special type of rocket) marks the start of the festivities which sees a whole range of different entertainments aimed at the entire family

There are foam parties, special costumes, parades, coronation of the queens and ladies and carnival floats alongside a whole range of sporting events. One event that is bound to appeal is the tennis tournament which takes place on June 15 and 16 for all forms of doubles competitions, men, women and mixed with prizes for winners in different categories and the finals will be televised locally. It costs €15 to take part but all those who sign up before June 12 will receive a special t-shirt, water and isotonic drink
and free access to the town swimming pool, so perhaps the next Nadal might just be on show. Music is of course a very special part of any fiesta and Catral is no different, with a very wide selection of musical entertainment on hand from local dance schools to municipal bands, adult dance troops, flamenco hosted by a selection of Peña clubs, rock bands, DJs, indeed every type of music imaginable. Food is important with food trucks on hand some nights plus local bars and restaurants going out of their way to ensure that all who visit will have both their bodies and their souls satisfied. excuse to have fun as there is a clearly religious meaning behind the celebrations as both the statues of the Sacred Heart of Jesus and St John the Baptist are paraded through on different days but solemn masses will be held on each occasion. Small town, plenty to do CATRAL is able to trace its founding back almost 1,000 years, although the meaning of the name has been lost in time. It was ruled by the Moors until the 13th century until it was recovered by Castile and then passed to Aragon. It was a relatively sleepy backwater until the 18th cen-
tury when local wetlands were drained allowing for more farmland to be cultivated and thanks to the increased prosperity, it managed to purchase independence from Orihuela. Known as the gateway to the Vega Baja, the native population still rely heavily
on agriculture for their income but in recent years particularly, it has seen an influx of immigrants from the UK and other parts of Europe seeing its population almost double and giving it a very cosmopolitan feel. Situated as it is, between Murcia and Alicante, whilst there may not be a huge

La Fuente / Waste funding BOOST: Waste treatment is set to improve.
THE urbanisations of La Fuente and Campoamor Golf are set to benefit from €800,000 in funding earmarked for new waste disposal facilities in the Vega Baja area. Alicante provincial authorities approved the spending as part of a €2.2 million spending package aimed at improving waste disposal across the area. A total of 13 areas have been granted funding under the programme. It comes after Alicante’s Consell agreed to j o i n w i t h t h e Va l e n c i a
G e n e r a l i t a t ’s E n v i r o n ment Department which has also backed waste management improvements in those areas. Manuel Pineda, head of the Vega Baja Sustainable Consortium, said the area was getting more funding than others to make sure it had proper facilities for the first time. “With this approval and the signing of the agreement, which we will carry out shortly, we take a step further in the improvement of waste management in the region,” he said.
Extra firefighters LA FUENTE and Campoamor Golf are set to have six more firefighters available after a total of 11 were taken on throughout Alicante Province. The six firefighters are due to serve with the Orihuela and Torrevieja brigades which cover La Fuente and Campoamor Golf. Jose Francisco Rubio, chief inspector of the Alicante Province Fire Brigade’s Operational Service, said the new firefighters brought the force closer to a full complement of staff. “We are very close to reaching those levels which we consider essential for the present and future,” the chief inspector said. The addition of 11 more firefighters brings the total throughout Alicante Province to 647. This includes a chief service inspector, three officers, 11 non-commissioned officers, 81 corporals and 507 firefighters across 13 local divisions.

/ Campoamor Golf NEWS A SAILING club in Dehesa de Campoamor has joined others throughout the Valencia Community in calling on regional authorities to enact rules allowing them to extend moorings. The Association of Nautical Clubs of the Valencian Community (ACNCV) has requested an urgent meeting with the authority’s public works spokesperson Jose Salvador to discuss the rules. The Campoamor Nautical Club is part of the association. The Association claimed concessions for ports were last renewed 17 years ago. The law has only been used to raise mooring fees in that time, it also claimed. It comes as the Association requested meetings with the Valencia Region’s Subdirectorate of Ports in February, but received no response. The association said on behalf of its clubs: “The current situation generates legal uncertainty and makes it

impossible to make significant investments to improve our sites.” The regional authority should take action on the issue and remember that the clubs are non-profit organisations whose purpose is to promote local sports. The Torre Horadada Nautical Club, one of those in the association, said current rules were ‘suffocating’ clubs and added some had reached a point of no return. “We hope that this is not the real objective of this paralysis because, if the clubs die of starvation, the first victim will be water sports,” the club said. “We hope the authority has the sensitivity and will to comply with its legislative mandate,” they added. New regulations approved by the Valencia Region’s Generalitat in December covering port moorings are yet to be enforced, the clubs claimed.

It’s a dog’s life IF you have a dog and you are in the vicinity of Ciudad Quesada, then you and your pooch can have great fun at the public dog park. Aware of the number of people who own dogs in the area, the council decided to invest in creating a special place for the four-legged members of the family and this was opened a few years ago. Since then, it has been significantly upgraded and fenced in so that the dogs can run around safely, with no fear of them escaping. There are now six large concrete pipes that they can explore whilst owners can use them as seats, although if it gets too warm eight trees were planted last year to allow for shade and there is also some public seating. Obviously dogs running around having fun will get thirsty so water pipes have been installed and there are two separate drinking areas
MAKING FRIENDS: Dogs and their owners in the public dog park. and four entrances to the dog park. As well as drinking, dogs have other regular needs and the council has thoughtfully installed pooh bags and somewhere to dispose of them so, owners are encour-
aged to ensure that they leave the park as they would like to find it. Twice a year the council sprays the entire area in order to keep mosquitos and other insects at bay and the area is regularly cut so that grass and
weeds do not get out of hand. So popular has the dog park become that people bring their animals from far and wide to let them exercise in a safe environment, but also to meet new people and make friends.

La Zenia Playa Flam Walking for life MARIA and the Pink Ladies and Panthers held their 10th ‘Walk for Life’ to raise funds on behalf of the AECC cancer charity on Sunday. The event was held at the promenade amphitheatre, Playa Flamenca, and was supported by Orihuela Town Hall, which provided the stage, tables, chairs, toilets and the Local Police to marshal the walk. In total 425 people took part in the walk plus pet dogs and little children in pushchairs. The entrants paid a registration fee of €5
DAY OUT: There was a great atmosphere. to take part and in return received an official Pink Ladies ‘Walk for Life’ tshirt sponsored by Spain Property Shop and a bottle of water donated by Evolution bar from La Fuente. It was a great family afternoon beginning with a warm up Zumba presentation performed by Angie Nichols and her Zumba girls. Once the walk was finished live music was provid-
ed by some of the coast’s top entertainers, all of whom donated their time free. The artists performing were Al Joel, No Limits, Abba Elite Girls, Morris Dancers, Jacuzz duo, Keily Paige, Johnny Lea, Diane Diaz, Rees, Cindy Fitzpatrick, Nigel Burchill and a Blues Brothers tribute who arrived on stage in an authentic American police car. hosted the day. The total raised on the day was €6,595.58 but the final figure is expected to be more once all outstanding sponsorship has been collected. Twelve-year-old Conor Kavanagh asked if he collected donations from the crowd could he sing on stage, as he did last year when he raised €225, so off he went and smashed last year’s total by raising €375.
Take the train THE popular tourist ‘train’ that runs from Playa Flamenca along Orihuela Costa to Campoamor will soon be restarted for the summer. Big plans... THE green light has been given to a massive new development in Playa Flamenca. Orihuela Town Hall granted permission for 128 homes, shops, offices, store rooms, garages and swimming pools. The hiring of a new architect at the town hall has enabled various schemes to be given the go-ahead after delays of up to 18 months in the planning process. The Department of Urbanism was unable to process
building permits due to the lack of the official. As well as the Playa Flamenca development, plans for four large blocks of apartments in El Barranco were passed. The councillor for Urb a n is m, Ra fa e l A lma gro, explained that “little by little we will be taking out all the issues to incorporate the chief architect and thus we can unblock all the files.”
Almagro acknowledged that there is a big backlog but is aiming to have dealt with all outstanding applications in four or five months. Speaking after a meeting of the Local Government Board Almagro said that as well as giving permission to build new developments, action had been taken to halt construction on two sites in Orihuela Costa and Montepinar that had started without a licence.

Summer taxi plan TAXIS from Torrevieja will be able to pick up passengers from Villamartin ranks this summer as the authorities try to cope with the tourist crowds. The regional government has decided to allow taxi drivers in Orihuela and Torrevieja to provide services jointly in their respective areas to meet the increase in passenger demand, from June 16 to September 15. The authorities recognised that summer traffic jams often mean there are not enough taxis available. Licensed taxis from Torrevieja will be able to pick up passengers at taxi ranks in Playa Flamenca, La Zenia Boulevard, Cabo Roig and Villamartin.
FINANCE Investing in renewables
THE head of the Acciona infrastructure and energy company has said it will continue to invest in clean power and hopes to expand its output. Jose Manuel Entrecanales told a meeting of company shareholders that Acciona plans to go from a total renewable output of 1,600 megawatts to 2,000 megawatts in the next 18 months. “Acciona will contribute to efforts to invest in renewables in Spain,” said Entrecanales. The president of the company said changes to regulations and positive results from reviews of asset remuneration made the investments possible.

‘Not ready’ for next crisis A FORMER senior economic analyst at Spain’s central bank has said the country is ill-equipped to face another crisis like the one which struck the world in 2008. Former Bank of Spain Studies Director Jose Luis Malo de Molina said imbalances and risks were not addressed following the 2008 financial crisis and subsequent recession. “We are not prepared to absorb shocks like those seen in 2008. What happened during the crisis can happen again,” Malo de Molina said. The economist was speaking at the launch of his book ‘A Macroeconomic

A TRADE UNION has accused Spain’s central bank of having an ‘unhealthy obession’ with the economic consequences of a planned minimum wage hike. The UGT said the Bank of Spain’s belief that an increase in the rate to €900 per month would negatively impact on job creation was harming its collective bargaining efforts. It comes as the central bank said in a report that it could not rule out job losses in the event the increase goes ahead. The wage rise was first floated in government budget plans.

CEC slam ‘threatening’ tax tone AN association of small and medium sized companies has accused the Spanish Treasury of sending letters about tax with a ‘threatening’ tone to some firms. The Spanish Confederation of Commerce (CEC) said small businesses with low turnover had received the letters warning them about inconsistencies in tax returns. It comes as retail sales have risen by 2 per cent but
small and medium sized firms have seen a drop of 0.5 per cent. CEC General Secretary Jose Guerrero said: “Owners are struggling to move their businesses forward. The last thing we need is a sword of Damocles over our heads.” The CEC is working ‘intensely’ to ensure small and medium sized companies can adapt to new consumer habits which have driven a rise in online sales.
Huawei 5G rollout CHINESE technology company Huawei is still set to put Spain’s new 5G network into place despite a ban on the company doing so in the US, according to the CEO of its Spanish division Tony Jin Yong.
New CEO IGOR GARZESI has been appointed the new CEO of Banco Mediolanum and has pledged to put the bank in an ‘unbeatable’ position after replacing Vittorio Colussi following a unanimous decision from the company’s board.
Scooter use MORE than one million trips have been made by around 300,000 unique users on Lime scooters since the company began operating in the cities of Pamplona, Madrid, Malaga, Valencia and Zaragoza, leading to reduction in emissions of 210,000 kilograms of CO2, according to company estimates.

Euro EUR/GBP: Up from £0.84 to £0.87 EUR/USD: Down from $1.12 to $1.11 The euro has spent the last month edging higher against a struggling pound but failing to exert itself against the US dollar. The news that the European Commission had slashed its growth forecasts for two of the largest economies in the Eurozone (Germany and Italy) applied some pressure to EUR/USD, as did the expectation that the European Central Bank (ECB) is likely to keep monetary policy accommodative for the foreseeable future. However, EUR rates were then boosted by the news that the White House would delay tariffs on all car imports by at least six months. The outcome of the EU elec-

with the British currency sliding against peers like the euro and US dollar in response to the collapse of cross-party Brexit talks. Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn indicated that talks had gone as far as they could and that striking a deal is impossible amid the ‘increasing weakness and instability’ of the government.
All the ongoing Brexit uncertainty meant the pound was unable to benefit from Bank of England (BoE) Governor Mark Carney asserting that interest rates are likely to rise faster than investors expect. MPs are currently set to vote on the withdrawal bill in early June, and it was reported that if Mrs

May’s plan is defeated again, the UK will either be set for a no-deal or for Article 50 to be revoked. May has also implied that she will set out a timetable for her resignation next month. Such upheaval could send the pound lower in the weeks ahead. With so much Brexit news on the horizon, UK data releases are unlikely to have much impact on the pound. US Dollar USD/GBP: Up from £0.76 to £0.78 USD/EUR: Up from €0.88 to €0.89 Concerns that the US/China trade war is escalating has reduced demand for higher-risk assets in the last few weeks - boosting the US dollar in the process. An article from Chinese media stated: ‘If there is no real concrete action by the United States, it will be meaningless for you to come and talk. It is better to suspend the consultation completely and return to the normal working track.’ Trade concerns may continue driving USD movement in the near-term.

LEAPY LEE SAYS IT OTHERS THINK IT WHY is it that when anyone in the public eye decides to comment on issues of immigration and the effect it is having on Europe and its culture, they are immediately vilified by the politicians, media and a small number of snowflakes, but praised to the roof by the majority of the concerned local populace? Last week John Cleese was the latest shining example. Don’t get me wrong, I have not been too impressed with this man and his antics over the last few years, (although I adored Fawlty Towers!) But when he stated publicly that London was ‘not English any more,’ the ‘likes’ and concurring comments posted on social media were numbered in their thousands. However, with their usual monotonous regularity, the ‘Good Morning’ and other media discussion outlets, (with their, oh so carefully selected panelists!) went out of their way to argue a case to the contrary. He was accused of racism (Natch) being unpatriotic, disliking black people, Islamophobia and just about anything else designed to stifle the free speech of anyone who dares to speak out against what actually is, so obviously, manifesting across the whole of Europe. Well, I’m sure it comes as no surprise to most of you, that I am one of the untold thousands of beleaguered and vilified ‘ordinary’ public that is in wholehearted agreement with his remarks.

Not English any more?
LONDON: Has it changed beyond recognition over the years? London isn’t English any more. It is a simple statement of fact. Frankly anyone who thinks otherwise, has either not been there, or walks around with a sack over their head. Over the last 30 years, this great city has
changed almost beyond all recognition. Large areas do truly resemble the Middle East. Often, when taking public transport, you can travel the whole journey without hearing the English language spoken once. When I was a young man
growing up in London, the only Burkas on show were worn by the wives of visiting Saudi Sheiks and Royalty escaping from Ramadan by travelling to the UK (where no one had even heard of it!) and wandering around Harrods and Hatton Garden, handbags stuffed with untold thousands, while their husbands wagered fortunes in the gambling clubs of the West End. These days, in many areas, you’d be hard pressed to find a female whose apparel didn’t cover her from head to foot. The point I am trying to make here is that it is glaringly obvious that London, and many other European cities, are not so culturally indigenous any more. Whether this is a good, or a bad thing is irrelevant. When the usual predictable lot emerge from the shadows, raising any objection they can think of to stifle one iota of reasonable discussion on the subject, methinks that many do protest far too much. Let them remember, that although many would prefer to turn our great societies into one of the suppressed countries of the Middle or Far East, freedom of speech is still at the very heart of our English heritage. It’s what our ancestors fought and died for. Woe betides those who seek to either erode or change this basic British right of existence. It will not sit well! Just one of my grumps Mike Senker In my opinion Views of a Grumpy Old Man HERE’S one for you - I recently went to a function and during the evening I was offered the chance to buy some raffle tickets. There were three prizes. A week’s holiday was the first prize; the second was a meal at a posh restaurant and the third a case of nice wine. The tickets were not particularly cheap but then the prizes were OK and it was a good cause. But I had to ask my normal question which is what prize comes out first? She popped off for a second and then said, “its the normal way - third, second, first.” I then told her that’s the wrong way of doing it because everybody enters the raffle to have a chance of winning the first prize and if you draw the third prize first that cannot happen. She said, “But that’s the way we always do it.” It may well be and it’s always wrong. She then told me this is done to make it more exciting and to keep the suspense up. Look, it’s OK if you are buying a ticket for a euro I guess and there are loads of prizes and whoever wins just

If you do this, be sure that the tickets cannot be switched or you will likely receive complaints. I still bought a couple of tickets, they still did it their way and I won sweet fanny adams as usual. Felon turned doomsday prophet, Jim Bakker, is selling ‘Donald Trump’ coins which he promises have special spiritual power. This guy is an ex-convict, accused rapist and TV evangelist. What he is claiming is that when believers hold the coin with Trump’s face, they are somehow magically united in prayer with everyone else and that creates a greater ‘point of contact’ with God. Idolatry, anybody? For the low, low price of $45 all this shameless superstition is all yours! God bless America!!

Victory by default Cassandra Nash A weekly look - and not entirely impartial reaction to the Spanish political scene
PABLO CASADO believes the Partido Popular has won Madrid. Err, no, Pablo. He saved his skin by taking the two jewels in the Spanish crown by foul means, not fair. Manuela Carmena and Mas Madrid were the most-voted in the municipal elections but the PP will have no compunction about teaming up with Ciudadanos to get into city hall, despite the bile on both sides during both elections. And the PP will have even fewer qualms about getting into bed with Vox which is so far to the Right that it’s out of sight this side of democracy. The Madrid Community should have gone to the Left, too, where Mas Madrid and Iñigo Errejon were the m o s t - v o t e d b u t t h e y w o n ’t h a v e a chance thanks to the Andalucia threesome. Neither result is PP victory, they were Mas Madrid defeats.
Leading by example PEDRO SANCHEZ and François Macron intend to attempt what, in the best of all
possible worlds, should happen in Spain. Although Sanchez is a socialist and Macron a liberal, they hope to join forces to prevent the European People’s Party the Partido Popular to you and me - from taking over the European Commission. With 20 seats, the Spanish PSOE has more than any other socialist party in the European Parliament and the same goes for Macron’s 21 Renaissance seats. After 15 years of conservative domination, they want socialists and liberals to introduce a more progressive U agenda. And all the while, Sanchez will be looking over his shoulder at Albert Rivera and Ciudadanos as if to say, ‘See, this is the way to do it.’
No consolation prizes PROBABLY the biggest loser in the local and regional elections was the Podemos supremo Pablo Iglesias. Podemos lost seats everywhere and instead of tipping the balance to the Left on councils and regional governments, in many cases it is handing that privilege to Vox. Predictably, Iglesias continues to believe that he could, and should, occupy a seat in a future PSOE government in return for his 42 parliamentary seats. His reasons are nebulous, but his motives are as obvious as his sense of entitlement.
Time to go SAD to say, although it’s no surprise, Juan Carlos I’s time is up. He will no longer take part in public life, he announced. And quite right too. He was what Spain needed in 1975 after Franco died when he, Fernando Alvarez de Miranda, Adolfo Suarez and a few others piloted Spain into the safe haven of democracy. He was what Spain needed when he pulled rank on military plotters and defused the attempted coup of February 23, 1981. But his usefulness is at an end
and at 81 the Bourbon king can lead a peaceful life hunting - elephants (possibly) included - with afternoons at the bullring and, who knows, the company of someone not his wife.

THE quiet dignity shown by Larry the cat on the doorstep of No 10 prior to Theresa May’s resignation speech is what I would wish for in the next prime minister. Before Theresa May could make the farewell speech, the stage first had to be made catfree. For 30 minutes, Larry the Downing Street mouser had sat on the doorstep, his back turned scornfully against the media as if to say: ‘What purrpuss do you serve? Are you fur real?’ before the door swung open and he was ushered inside. Theresa May led the Conservative party to a precipice; now that party is in danger of toppling over the edge. Its next leader has an unenviable task ahead. Bringing the party together will be as difficult as the Brexit negotiations, and the outcome just as unpredictable. Currently, everyone’s running in a selfindulgent leadership beauty parade. It’d be far easier if we had a list of MPs who AREN’T standing as candidates, it’d save time and space. And we can’t rule out the possibility Theresa May misreads the mood (again) and throws her hat into the ring. And heaven help us if Failing

LEGALLY SPEAKING Can they change their deed? Three years ago we bought a semi-detached villa in a community. The property is in fact bigger than our title deed says. We had a survey done and it shows that our property is 80 square metres bigger than the registered size. We would like to legalise this difference. It seems that we need a certificate from the community to show that no members oppose the change. by Peter Purvey I HAVE just finished watching David Attenborough' s latest film - ‘Climate Change - The Facts.’ I must say it’s a stunning resume of everything we have been hearing and seeing in bits and pieces over the last few years. Together its impact is decisive and urgent. The planet is warming (despite the President of the USA saying it’s all a huge hoax!) In 1988 American scientists announced what effect global warming would have - nobody believed them! Schoolchildren are demonstrating all over the world; their message is simple they are demanding that we, the current generation, leave them a planet fit for them to grow up and live in. Not an unreasonable demand. The last few years we have watched on our TV screens the effect of droughts, tornados, floods and fearsome fires that have destroyed whole communities. But taking them in as a whole is completely awesome and very shocking. Between 2040 and 2050 the earth is estimated to rise in temperature between 1.5 and 2 degrees Celsius. The amount of Arctic ice that could melt as a consequence of this could flood every coastal

CLIMATE CHANGE: Some of the effects of it. city around the world. Every single atlas and map of the world would have to be redrawn. In Minnesota, every 45 minutes an area the size of a football pitch is covered with flood water. In Africa, parts of Mozambique, Zimbabwe and
Malawi are becoming uninhabitable because of rising flood waters. One of the consequences of the ice melting is that it reveals an outlet for the methane gas that for the moment cannot escape. This alone could cause the earth
to go beyond the tipping point of no return as methane is 21 times as toxic as Co2. The warming of the seas has already killed off almost a third of the world’s coral. Massive deforestation to make way for agriculture and animals is

also partly to blame. The oil and gas companies, the most profitable of all the Co2 generators, like the tobacco companies of a few years ago, deny their responsibility. ‘Not us Guv.’ Renewable energy will be the byword for decades to come. But how much of this effort will have to go into generating all the extra electricity that our electric conveyances will consume. It appears that one full revolution of a wind generator can power the average house for a day. The only question that nags in my mind is this. Roughly 2.6 million years ago, during the Pleistocine era and lasting until around 11,000 years ago the Great Ice Age virtually turned our world into a giant snowball. We were not around in any significant numbers until the last million years or so. Certainly the early hominids were not driving Co2 emitting vehicles. The fact that they adapted and survived, thank goodness, is why we are here. But if humans were not responsible, what was? I do believe in ‘Gaia’; the word used to describe the whole of the ecosystems of our planet as a living entity. Perhaps, every now and then our dear old earth has a bad hair day and decides to take a holiday. How much worse could it get? Maybe this time we can’t just wait and see...

TECH FOR THE TIMID ON eBay I recently found a book I once wrote priced at €20. They also had another copy in the same condition, but this time with an added cachet: it was signed by the author. And cost €5 less. This humbling discovery set me to remembering the extent of that book’s original text. It wa s wr i t t e n o n a s imp le DOS-based word-processor, and the entire text occupied a minuscule 532 KB - half a megabyte! Megabytes? Remember those before we all went gaga on gigas, teras and petas? When storage was so precious (and of course men were men and we all lived in cardboard boxes), a Sinclair ZX chess game didn’t even need 1KB to run (487 bytes is st i l l a p p a r e n t l y th e w o rld record). These days my toothbrush needs a thousand times that just to log its bedtime routine. Once the floppy disk and then the writeable CD bit the digital dust we became hugely cavalier with t h e sh e e r v o lu me s o f th e

Terence Kennedy recalls when men were men and computers saved kilobytes
WHAT should it be: a cheaper, heavier HDD, or the newer, more expensive but far faster SSD? Megabyte for megabyte the clunky old mechanical beasts are still the best bargain, but the gap is narrowing fast. And as a general rule of thumb, the bigger (ie higher capacity) drive you buy, the cheaper it gets per megabyte of storage. One thing you can safely ignore is the hoary old warning that solid-state storage wears out fast. Yes it can survive fewer read and write cycles than its mechanical predecessor, but these days that’s almost irrelevant. Some SSDs now have a 10-year warranty, and experts reckoned that one new model just out will last the average Joe 114 years. I’m not counting on outliving mine.

Of course there’s the famous ‘cloud,’ but good luck sucking all th o s e g ig s o f da ta ba c k dow n again come the day you have to rebuild your digital life after a disaster.
Safest of all is still the trusty old external drive, and the good news is that prices keep plummeting just slightly faster than our personal data sprouts like Jack’s beanstalk. You can of course keep using
f l ash dr i ves and SD cards to back up, but despite ever-decreasing prices and ever-increasing capacities, the best bang f or your backup buck is still an external (USB) harddrive. What ever m edi um you choose ( and t he accompanying panel m i ght hel p) , don’t make the fundamental er r or I com m i t t ed those many years ago: keeping your backup wi t h your com put er. St or e i t som ewher e ‘off-site,’ even with a neighbour for safety. I didn’t - until a fire consumed both my computer and its backup on the same desk. So now if I want to see what I actually wrote back then it’s going to cost me that €20. Or €5 less for the signed copy.

Flight chaos
TO the Editor My friend was booked on to a low cost flight from Corvera to Leed’s Bradford on Friday, May 31 in the evening. After boarding, a technical fault meant the flight would be delayed, so they were disembarked and the baggage offloaded. They were informed that because the airport closed early on Fridays and Saturdays there would not be sufficient time to do the repair to meet the the closure time, and because of this the replacement aircraft would have to fly into Alicante. This meant they would not get to Leeds until the early hours of Saturday morning. I think I have my facts correct, and if so what a cowboy, village airstrip this herd of white elephants, this whole ill thought out, ego boosting money gobbling disaster has turned out to be. My wife and I were fortunate to have left SA two years ago and with me being UK born were welcomed into this lovely country we now live in. When I tell people about the life conditions in SA they look at me as if I’m talking gobbledy gook. The amount of farm murders, the couple who ran out of petrol last week who were shot dead for a mobile phone, SA has more road deaths over Christmas than the UK has for a whole year, the amount of unlicensed firearms, it’s worse than a war zone and nobody cares. Apartheid was started by a very short sighted man but what there is now, is Apartheid in reverse in a far worse state where you are forced to employ indigenous people, forced to have them in managerial positions, to have them as majority partners in your business and to have them in all sporting teams regardless of the consequences and or qualifications, you cannot employ the best qualified person, your business is allocated points for employment of black people, employment of coloured, Indian or whites gets you no points, not enough points no government or municipal work at all. I salute you for bringing some of the plight of all South Africans and Zimbabwians regardless of race or creed to light, it is the greedy ministers to blame. NEWS that anti-tourist graffiti appeared on the walls of Granada City last week has reignited the debate over the effects of an economically vital industry on Spanish locals. Spain’s tourism sector is the third largest contributor to the overall economy, accounting for about 10 per cent of total output (Gross Domestic Product, GDP) according to government figures. The industry is responsible for developing large swathes of the country’s Mediterranean coastline which expatriates now call home, as pictures of Benidorm from the 1950s and 1960s illustrate. Cities such as Granada also draw a hefty dividend from tourists who spend their money in local shops, bars and restaurants, benefiting the wider economy. The traffic of travellers into Spain has also helped to build bonds across borders and break down misconceptions held by tourists and locals about each other and their countries. But as with all aspects of the economy, the gains are seldom shared equally and the price of success for some is suffering for others. The Canary and Balearic islands are both home to anti-tourism movements who argue the industry has led to overdevelopment, harming their homes and the environment. In Barcelona the rise of holiday rentals has seen residents priced or even turfed out of neighbourhoods where they grew up because of the lure of profits from tourism. If tensions are to be eased then the benefits from the industry must be more widely shared and the impact on locals reduced.

Anti-tourist graffiti appears in Granada I live in a simple flat in a tourist hotspot on Mallorca. The residents pay their rents and feed their families because of doing business with the people visiting their small city. Only very few residents are against tourists. Typically those who hate foreigners in general. But, as I said, they are very few in number. Property prices in certain Spanish areas are not surging because of tourism, but because of big companies and rich individuals who are buying up property for investment purposes. So why not try an at-home pampering session, cutting down on expense and which can be fitted in to a spare moment? Begin with a relaxing bath or shower, using a handful of salt or sugar mixed with a little oil as a gentle all-body exfoliator. This will get the circulation going- great for skin tone - as well as sloughing off dead cells to reveal glowing skin; just take care not to slip during this step. If running a bath, you can also add some gentle exfoliating and hydrating properties by adding dry or powdered milk, Cleopatra-style. The lactic acid in dairy products can gently exfoliate skin at the same time as nourishing it. After drying off, treat yourself to a DIY facial by first thoroughly cleansing and then exfoliating the skin using a gentle facial scrub. If you have an at-home steamer, use this for 10 minutes to help clear pores, or alternatively use a towel over a bowl of hot water, taking care not to burn

MAGO DE OZ: ‘Life is a yellow brick road.’
One of Spain’s iconic bands AFTER playing as goalkeeper for the Real Madrid Futsal (five-a-side) team for eight years, Jesús Gil retired due to injury, changed his name and became the singer with a folk/ rock/metal band in 1988. Originally known as Transilvania (after an Iron Maiden number) they changed their name the following year to Mago de Oz (Wizard of Oz) as according to the singer “life is a yellow brick road where we search our dreams in the company of others.”
Now with a much changed line-up, the band has celebrated 30 years of playing popular rock and heavy metal becoming one of the talismanic Spanish bands and they are still touring on a regular basis. TORREVIEJA U3A was honoured with a visit from Jim Jump, the chairman of the International Brigade Memorial Trust. The Brigade was formed to remember the sacrifices of the many men and women from Ireland and the UK that gave their lives to support the fight against fascism during the Spanish Civil War. Volunteers from many other countries also joined in to support the anti-fascist movement. Many interesting details came to light including the fact that it was mainly due to the actions of a couple of the Brigade members that the Home Guard (better known as Dad’s Army) came into being in the UK during the Second World War. CONSULAR MATTERS JENS, my friend Peter’s brother, wants to come to live in Spain because after many years of hard work in a well-known supermarket in Copenhagen, he wants to have a warm retirement on our Costa Del Sol. Many of the foreigners who come to live in Spain decide to rent a house to establish their permanent residence, either because they prefer to rent and save their money or they want to spend some time and get to know the area before buying a property. Peter has instructed me to draft the rental contract because he has heard that during the last year the law relating to housing rental contract law has undergone what can only be described as roller coaster changes involving three new regulations in about four months. Since March 6, 2019 we have had a new regulation whose most important changes are also the least known, well at least by the tenants. The new law gives rights in favour of tenants who sign a lease after that date for their permanent residence.

RENTAL CONTRACT: The law has undergone roller coaster changes. The first of this new regulation is that the law itself imposes on the landlord a minimum contract term of five years if the tenant so wishes. It is a right for tenants and an obligation for owners. Once the five-year contract has been completed, the
lease can be renewed for another three years if the tenant so wishes and notifies the landlord within the legally established time frame and in the event that the landlord has not reported the said contract extension. It also establishes the new word-
ing of the law that the annual increase in rent being paid can only be increased according to the official index standard of living (IPC) published by the INE (Spanish National Institute of Statistics). This index will operate as a maxi-
mum limit; therefore the rent being paid cannot be raised beyond the increase of said IPC. The intention of this law is to give some stability to tenants so that they can settle in a house with certain guarantees of permanence, but it is also true that this extension of the mandatory term of the lease and the limit that the law has put on raising the rent could cause landlords to think twice before renting their home and this could lead to a decrease in the number of houses available for permanent rental in our area where holiday rentals can be very attractive. We will have to wait a bit to see how this new regulation affects a seasonal market. These measures do not apply to leases of holiday homes, rural homes for farms or luxury homes, among others that are governed by other rules, but it is not Jens’ intention to rent one of these homes. make sure that you are in the position to pay for the house with your personal income. Commercial real estate financing is often based in the properties’ ability to produce positive cash flow and to cover the financing cost. First, you need to learn as much about real
estate as possible. In commercial real estate you’re dealing with professionals. If you come across as too much of a newbie your commercial real estate career could be ended before it actually started. Second, no commercial real estate lender will lend you any money if you can’t show at least a little bit of real estate investment experience. What’s the solution to this? Go out there and do one or two single family home deals yourself. It doesn’t matter if you make huge profits to start off with. If you can manage to show positive cash flow with your single family home deals you are ahead of the pack, plus you will have collateral for future loans. So, buy a small single family home in a decent neighbourhood and rent it immediately. This will keep your out of the pocket expenses at a minimum and you will have rent income to cover your monthly expenses. And as a bonus, you gain experience as an investor and as a landlord.

Suzuki Jimny SZ5 Allgrip ROAD TEST by Nick Fletcher
SUZUKI’S tiny four-wheeldrive Jimny has been around for many years in virtually unchanged form, but now there is an all-new version which looks less cute and more formidable. The new Jimny is still very small but has more purposeful styling and even looks quite cool, an important element in an imageconscious market. It still has selectable 4WD with low-ratio transfer box which means it is amazingly capable off-road, often able to venture into terrain t h a t l a rg e r 4 W D m o d e l s cannot cope with. Powered by a 1.5 litre 100 hp petrol engine and five-speed manual gearbox (there is a four-speed auto option), the Jimny has a 0100 kph time of 12 seconds and top speed of 150 kph ( 9 0 m p h ) . economy is 14.7 kpl (41.5 mpg) and emissions are 154 g/km. Pr i ces st ar t at €17,583 (£15,499), though my topspec SZ5 Allgrip test version cost €20,420 (£17,999) and is very well equipped with automatic a i r- c o n d i t i o n i n g , c r u i s e control, digital radio and CD player, Bluetooth, LED headlights, rear privacy glass, alloy wheels, and satnav with touchscreen and smartphone link. Safety features include stability control, lane departure warning, hill descent control and tyre pressure monitoring. The cabin is narrow but functional, with good dashboard layout and comfortable seating.The two rear seats will accommodate adults, but luggage space is then very limited at just 85 litres. But with the rear seats down flat, the load space is 377 litres litres, larger than in the previous Jimny. There is very little
cabin stowage space - a tiny glove-box, very slim door pockets and a couple of cup holders is about all you get. The Jimny can double as a neat, versatile rural vehicle with strong off-road and towing ability, or as a practical and nimble city car with eye-catching cachet. On tarmac, ride quality is firm but quite acceptable and the handling is agile thanks to revised steering which gives much-improved feedback and a greater sense of control. I found the four-speed auto transmission rather overbusy but most buyers will go for the slick manual gearbox. The previous Jimny had a lot of friends, selling almost three million worldwide, and this updated and enhanced version will attract many more to the Suzuki brand. The Jimny looks good, drives well, and there is nothing truly comparable or as capable at the price.

For me, that alone was reason enough to do this project - filling in the gaps and completing BMW’s history.” The original BMW Garmisch was developed by Bertone as an independent design proposal intended to demonstrate the studio’s creativity. “The original idea came from Nuccio Bertone himself

who wanted to consolidate our existing relationship with BMW by designing a surprise show car for the Geneva Motor Show,” remembers Marcello Gandini, who was in charge of Bertone’s design department at the time. “We wanted to create a modern mid-sized coupe that was faithful to BMW’s design language, but that was also more dynamic and even a bit provocative.” While the side profile of the car was very sleek and clean, the most distinctive design feature of the BMW Garmisch was its bold, vertical and almost angular variation of BMW’s kidney-shaped radiator grill, which was flanked by square glass-covered headlights. Other unusual details included sports car-like louvres on the C-pillars and the honeycomb-patterned mesh cover for the rear window - a trademark element of Marcello Gandini’s style. Being faithful to the original car, the new BMW Garmisch is also a showcase of BMW’s ex-

pertise in design research and prototype building. As original documents of the BMW Garmisch were sparse, the design team had to retrace every detail of the car’s exterior and interior from a small selection of period images, most of them only available in black and white. Marcello Gandini himself contributed to the research process with memories from the creation of the car, allowing the design team to refabricate key details such as the exterior colour - a light champagne metallic in line with Italian fashion trends of the time - and the interior materials and trim. And while the BMW Design team used the latest 3D modelling technologies to revive and specify the original structures and shapes, the BMW Garmisch was coach-built by skilled craftsmen in Turin - just like the original car almost 50 years ago. “When I first heard that BMW wanted to recreate the BMW Garmisch, I was a bit surprised,” Marcello Gandini recalls of his first meeting with Adrian van Hooydonk, who asked for his approval in 2018.
