Jewellery heist POLICE have arrested a man on suspicion of stealing €19,900 of jewellery from a shop in Velez-Malaga. Officers from the National Police claim the 36-year-old Venezuelan man burgled three display cases of gold necklaces from the small store. The man was allegedly caught red-handed as he tried to flee with the jewels in a bag under his arm. After searching him, police claim to have discovered all the pieces reported stolen, valuing almost €20,000. The suspect was later charged with eight counts of robbery.
By Sally Underwood SUNDAY’S municipal elections turned up some interesting, and in some cases historic, results across Axarquia. While many municipalities suffered split results, leading to coalition negotiations, Frigiliana saw an outright victory for the left-leaning PSOE party, which gained 780 votes and six councillors out of 11. Meanwhile, in Torrox, incumbent mayor Oscar Medina celebrated a historic victory, gaining the first outright victory for the Partido Popular (PP) party in the town’s history. The right wing party won nine seats out of a possible 17, and 3,231 votes, while the PSOE party came second with four seats. The PP saw further success in Moclinejo, winning the most seats at four out of a possible nine. The party will still not need to form a coalition, however, in order for its mayor, Antonio

Muñoz, to retain power. In Nerja, it was a return to frontline politics for former mayor Jose Alberto Armijo. The politician, who was mayor between 1995 and 2015, ousted incumbent mayor Rosa Arrabal, after his PP won 10 out of a possible 21 seats. Armijo will now need to enter a coalition with fellow rightleaning parties Cuidadanos, Vox or UPNER. Other municipalities saw results which were far less clear, including Rincon de la Victoria, where the vote was split almost completely evenly be-

tween left and right wing parties. The PP gained the most seats with seven out of 21, while PSOE was not far behind with five councillors, meaning a coalition of at least two parties will be necessary for any governing team to take power. Similarly, in Velez-Malaga, incumbent mayor Antonio Moreno Ferrer’s position is in jeopardy after his PSOE party gained just seven out of a possible 25 seats, leaving the party scrambling to form a coalition with other left-wing parties.
According to Spanish media, talks to form a coalition in Algarrobo are already underway after the majority of votes were split evenly between the PSOE and PP parties, with six councillors each. This leaves the Ciudadanos party’s one councillor, Jose Luis Ruiz Cabezas, as kingmaker. He said: “The only thing we want is for our agenda to be respected, which involves improving the cleaning services, parks and gardens, beaches and making the council job boards much more transparent.”
TWO bodies have been discovered on beaches in Almuñecar and Salobreña in one week. On Sunday, the corpse of a 52-year-old man washed up on Playa Tesorillo, at the eastern end of Playa Velilla in Almuñecar. According to media reports, the body is currently with the Instituto de Medicina Legal awaiting a postmortem to determine a cause of death. A beach-goer reportedly alerted emergency services to the corpse after spotting it on the shore at around noon. Members of the Salvamento Maritimo, Local Police, and Proteccion Civil and health services attended the scene before removing the body. Two days later, on Tuesday, the corpse of an elderly woman was also found washed up on Playa de la Charca, near the Peñon, Salobreña. According to media reports, the victim is thought to have been a foreign woman in her 80’s. Her body, which had a lifejacket on, was spotted around 15 metres from the beach.

Marihuana bust by Sally Underwood POLICE have seized 300 cannabis plants from an alleged marihuana lab in Velez-Malaga. Officers from the National Police also arrested a 37-year-old Spanish man after raiding a property in the Pueblo Nuevo area. According to police, the man lives in a house nearby, but used the second property for growing cannabis indoors.
Officers claim the building also contained tools for growing the plants, as well as harvesting, drying, and selling it. They also allege the man was using the public electricity supply to run the operation. The suspect, who has been handed over to the judicial authority awaiting trial, was charged with drug trafficking offences, as well as electricity fraud. The drugs’ bust follows a string of similar cases across Axarquia so far this
year, as police clamp down on the trafficking of cannabis, cocaine, and even heroin. Earlier this year, officers reported shutting down seven cocaine dealing operations in Torrox and Nerja, with one outfit allegedly run by an elderly couple who own a horse farm and hair salon. Another bust in Velez-Malaga saw police uncover an illegal jetty used for drug-running boats between Spain and North Africa.
Blaze on the beach VOLUNTEERS from a kayak rental business have helped to extinguish a blaze consuming two hectares of scrubland off Burriana Beach. The steepness of terrain forced firefighters to ask a local kayak company to intervene, putting the boats out to sea to help move several water containers.
Members of the Provincial Consortium and Guardia Civil asked Educare Aventura to use the water tanks to get nearer to the rocks and extinguish the flames, which were burning ‘uncontrollably’ on an isolated patch of wasteland. According to emergency services, the drop from the cliffs above to the burning
area was almost 80 metres, with the only access point being from the water. The fire is said to have broken out shortly before 4pm on Monday in an area in the Cerro de San Isidro. Following the work by firefighters and kayakers, the blaze was extinguished by around 5pm.

Poisonous snake spotted OFFICIALS have captured a poisonous snake found in a playground in Torrox Costa. Workers from the Don Animal shelter and the Local Police attended the scene after being alerted by concerned parents who saw the reptile near their children. According to Spanish media, the three-metre long adult Montpellier snake was found in the Los Llanos playground. Workers were finally able to capture the animal ‘with difficulty,’ before placing it in a bucket and moving it to a cool place with plenty of reeds and near a stream. Don Animal’s manager, Jose Antonio Villadores, said: “[Capturing the snake] presented complication and resistance, but our technicians were able to rescue it from the urban area without incident.” So far this year, three snakes have been captured in the Axarquia area, before being returned to their natural habitats. Torrox’s mayor, Oscar Medina, thanked Don Animal and Local Police for capturing the animals, and said he was ‘enormously’ glad the serpent had been returned to its natural habitat without any injuries to the parents or children at the playground. The Montpellier snake is a mildly-venomous snake commonly found in scrub land in the Mediterranean.

Islands day THIS picture of one of the Canary Islands’ best-known volcanoes comes as the Spanish archipelago celebrates its regional holiday today (Thursday), May 30. Tenerife’s Mount Teide is almost 3,720 metres high when measured from sea level. If measured from the ocean floor it is about 7,500 metres tall, making it the highest volcano in the world from base to peak outside of Hawaii. Teide National Park which surrounds the volcano was named a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2007.
The islands take their name from the Latin Canariae Insulae, which means Islands of the Dogs. The Canary Islands’ flag bears two dogs on its crest. The Canary Islands is made up of Tenerife, Fuerteventura, Gran Canaria, Lanzarote, La Palma, La Gomera and El Hierro. There are also six smaller islands including La Graciosa which is home to 658 people. The islands’ geography is diverse but is famously volcanic. The archipelago was settled by Berbers from North Africa who became known as Guanches. Spain be-

Spelling mistake AN honorary plaque erected by Velez-Malaga Council has been found to contain a spelling error. The typographical mistake came to light after a resident took to Facebook to point it out to the council. The plaque, at the Maria Zambrano Park, contains an extra letter ‘h’ in a quote by the Zambrano; one of Spain’s most famous campaigners and writers. The error in the quote ‘Envy shies away from the darkness that every creature presents itself and fixes itself on an image that projects: an image born in darkness,’ will now be rectified after the council urged the company responsible to alter it. Partido Popular politician Jesus Lupiañez, said: “Maria Zambrano does not deserve that we flood part of her work with spelling mistakes…The preposition ‘a’ does not carry ‘h’.” The Facebook post highlighting the mistake has since generated more than 40 comments.

Officer ‘injured’ in beach arrest A LOCAL POLICE officer has allegedly been injured while trying to remove a man who was camping illegally in Caleta de Velez. The officer was treated for scratches and bruising after tackling a 28year-old homeless man from Germany. Police were called to the beach by concerned locals after a group of three men allegedly set up camp before letting loose five dogs, playing loud music, and disturbing bathers. Officers said two of the loose dogs were dangerous breeds, and were causing concern amongst those on the beach. After telling the three about the camping ban, the limits on loud music, and the obligation to keep dogs under control, the officers asked the men to identify themselves, which they were reportedly ‘reluctant to do.’ Police then tried to convince the group to leave the area, and succeeded in identifying two of the men, who then took their dogs and left. The third man, said to have been very muscular, resisted identifying himself or moving on, however. According to police, the situation became more complicated because of the presence of bathers and children, and so officers went to arrest the man after he refused to comply. In the process, one policeman was slightly injured. He was later taken to a health centre to be treated for several scratches, as well as bruising on one arm, none of which are not thought to have been serious.

Improved disabled child facilities ALMUÑECAR Council has handed over a municipal area to two disabled charities. The site, measuring more than 100 square metres, is located in the Mariote Gardens, and has been given to charities ASINAL and ALOJHA. According to the council, the space will be used for ‘promoting the physical and mental well-being of people with disabilities through planned social action, as well as achieving maximum integration between people and the environment, promoting social skills and healthy behaviours, as well as promoting the different social and environmental factors for development.’ The area has been equipped with floating floors, adapted bathrooms for the disabled and im-

New school THE Junta de Andalucia has approved plans to create a new school in Rincon de la Victoria. The Torre de Benagalbon Institute will come at the same time as the closure of the Olias Public School, which faced a lack of students registering. Currently, around 240 schoolchildren are learning in prefabricated classrooms until their permanent building is complete, leading to complaints from parents concerned over alleged damp conditions. In March, following an outcry over reported delays in opening the new school, the Junta de Andalucia has announced the building would be ready in time for September. Schoolchildren are expected to have to remain learning in prefabricated classrooms after it was revealed works to build a new school are delayed.

‘Caught redhanded’ POLICE have allegedly caught a pair of burglars as they attempted to break into a property in Velez-Malaga. Officers from the Local Police arrested a 39-yearold man after chasing him through several streets in the El Castellano area. Concerned neighbours raised the alarm when they realised two people were allegedly trying to gain access to a property. After they were surprised by locals, the pair reportedly fled, jumping several walls and fences. Members of the Local Police then began pursuing the suspects, eventually catching one as he stopped to rest on a nearby road. According to media reports, the man,
who was tired and panting, tried to flee again but was caught. After searching him, officers found keys to a car parked near to the house which was nearly burgled. Inside, the officers found documentation belonging to what they believe is the suspect’s accomplice; an Italian 41-year-old man. In the boot of the car, officers also allegedly found a tool box, three locks, a cordless drill, a dark hooded sweatshirt and a flashlight. Later, officers inspected the area and found a black briefcase with tools, gloves and a black shirt, suggesting the second suspect of the attempted robbery managed to escape by changing his clothes.

Hiking route AROUND 20 hikers from Almuñecar have taken part in a route between Lanjaron and Niguelas. The event, organised by the Municipal Sports Area, was led by Enrique Garin. The participants, after a steep climb, came to the area of Pedro Calvo where fountains, yew trees, and walnut trees are in abundance, before stopping for food and beginning the final climb to the town of Niguelas. After arriving, the group celebrated with a
fortifying beer and the visit to the Romantic Garden. The next route, scheduled for June 6, will be the last before the summer break and will take in the Sierra Nevada and its rivers and meadows. It will be a route of medium-high difficulty, and a ‘unique opportunity for lovers of the high mountain where, even, you can step on snow,’ according to its organisers. Round Table event THE 41 Club Nerja has held two events, one of which saw members come in from around the world. The club for ex-Round Tablers from all over Europe, has 45 members from 10 different countries, most of whom drop into the club when they are in Spain. The association held its Club Meeting at the Al Andalus Hotel, Maro where their speaker was Elena Sanchis from Plan A talking about different events that they could
set up during the coming 41 Club year. Another event, the Munch Bunch Lunch, also took place, held at Miguel Al Manga, Nerja. The club’s new chairman, Alfie Fornear has called on members and potential members to come up with some new ideas so the club gets out and about as much as possible this year. Too noisy A NOISY party eventually led to the arrest of a fugitive wanted by the Swedish authorities for alleged drug trafficking. Local Police were called to a home in Hondon de las Nieves (Alicante) after neighbours complained. There they identified the people inside the house and as a matter of routine shared the information with the Guardia Civil in Aspe. They realised one of the people was a Swedish man who had an international arrest warrant outstanding on him. They started keeping a watch on the house and four months after the original complaint finally spotted him and moved in to make an arrest.

In the ecological red SPAIN is now an environmental debtor after consuming more resources than the ecosystem can regenerate in a year as from Tuesday (May 28), according to two NGOs. The World Wildlife Fund’s (WWF) and Global Footprint Network’s ‘ecological budgeting’ for Spain and Europe found more water, soil and clean air has been used than can be replaced annually. Now that Spain has passed its ‘Day of Overcapacity’ it is running on environmental credit, the NGOs said. Spain’s Day of Overcapacity came 18 days after the EU average on Friday May 10. The NGOs report found that if every person on Earth consumed as much energy as the average Spanish person, 2.3 planets would be needed to fuel the demand for resources.

School bus crash Daimiel, Ciudad Real Province. The cause of the accident is currently unknown. An emergency services helicopter took a 13-year-old boy to Ciudad Real Hospital after firefighters freed him
from the wreckage. He was left with slight injuries following the crash, doctors said. Three girls aged 11, 14 and 15, and a 56-year-old were also taken to Manzanares Hospital with slight injuries.

Illegal waste exports AFTER China closed the doors to the importation of waste material, it has been diverted to other parts of Asia and recently Malaysia seized large volumes of illegal plastic waste sent from Spain. According to Greenpeace, in 2018, Spain was the eighth largest exporter of waste to Malaysia and much of this was sent by clandestine methods with the content of contain-
ers not being properly described. The Minister of the Environment in that country, Madam Yeo Bee Yin recently revealed that no less than 24 containers full of plastic waste which cannot be recycled was seized in Selangor State and as they have been imported in breach of a United Nations Treaty, all will be returned to Spain in due course.

Surprise cash stash GUARDIA CIVIL officers on a routine callout found more than an overturned camper van. It came to rest near a precipice on the Puerto de la Mora mountain pass 40 kilometres from Granada but the Lithuanian couple who met them had suffered only minor injuries. After sending them to hospital for a checkup, the officers approached the van and found a third Lithuanian inside, clearly affected by drink and drugs. He too was sent to hospital and the van transferred to Guardia Civil headquarters in Granada where a search revealed an attaché case containing €18,000. Closer inspection revealed a hoard of notes under one of the seats. This could amount to more than €1 million but the
Guardia Civil are still checking it. “We want a bank to take the cash and help us count it, but this is proving difficult owing to security problems and the procedures involved in depositing this amount of money,” said Guardia Civil sources. The three Lithuanians, none of whom has a police record, insist that the cash is not theirs. They have not been arrested and unless the investigation uncovers further evidence, they will be fined only for money laundering. The maximum amount of cash that can be transported legally in Spain is €100,000 or €10,000 if taking it across a border into another country, regulations that were introduced to prevent moneylaundering or financing terrorism.

Deadly crossing THE Western Mediterranean migration route between North Africa and Spain is now the second deadliest in the world, according to a UN body. The UN’s International Organisation for Migration (IOM) found a total of 159 people have died or disappeared while taking the route this year. The route between North Africa and Spain came second to the Central Mediterranean route running from Libya to Europe. A total of 248 people have died or gone missing on that route so far this year, according to the IOM’s Missing Migrants report. The number of deaths and disappearances on the Western Mediterranean route made up 16 per cent of the 987 total across global routes this year, the report showed.

Medical bribery A GERMAN dialysis company has admitted to paying millions in bribes to secure business deals with doctors in Spain and across the world. The US’ Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) found corruption was visible in Fresenius Medical Care (FMC) from the early 2000s, but nothing was done to address it. The SEC was tasked with probing the claims made about FMC. FMC said it had co-operated fully with the investigation. The investigation found the company had bribed doctors in Spain, Turkey, China, Serbia, Bosnia, Mexico, Saudi Arabia and in several West African countries.
“Employees made improper payments through a variety of schemes including through the use of false consulting contracts, the forgery of documents and channelling bribes through external intermediaries,” the SEC said. “Senior management actively thwarted enforcement efforts. The improper conduct continued for years,” the regulator added. The SEC’s probe found FMC paid for Spanish doctors to go to international medical conferences and on holidays, funded their projects and bought them gifts to secure deals. Odds on new laws IN a series of tweets from the Office of the Defensor Del Pueblo, acting Ombudsman Francisco Fernandez Marugan has called for a review on the legality of advertising gambling in Spain. He considers that as the market has expanded dramatically in the past few years with
gross income rising to nearly €700 million in 2018, that it is dangerous and not being properly policed. Suggestions include a complete ban on advertising except for the lotteries run by the State and charity for the blind ONCE, failing that a ban on advertising on TV during chil-
dren’s programmes and the prohibition of the use of celebrities in any form of advert. In addition, it is recommended that studies are undertaken as to the effect on those who may be addicted to gambling and to offer assistance and advice to those involved.

BREXIT BRIEF Election results THE dominance of Brexit in British politics has made itself felt in European elections which saw the Conservatives and Labour haemorrhage votes to pro-leave and remain parties. Results released from Sunday night to Monday showed the pro-leave Brexit Party, led by former UKIP leader Nigel Farage, took 29 seats in the European Parliament. They won 31.6 per cent of the vote. The Liberal Democrats, who campaigned on a staunchly pro-remain platform, came second with 20.3 per cent of the vote. The party now has 16 Members of the European Parliament (MEPs), up from one before the vote. The Green Party increased its share of MEPs from three to seven, overtaking the Conservatives and pushing them into fifth place. Brexit cost Labour 10 MEPs. The party’s total number of seats fell by half after the vote which saw them finish third. The Conservatives, who previously had 19 seats in the parliament, were left with four MEPs after the vote. Winners of the 2014 European election UKIP lost all 24 of their MEPs. Conservative leader Theresa May and Labour head Jeremy Corbyn both blamed their parties’ poor performance on Brexit. May said: “It shows the importance of finding a Brexit deal.”
Bowing out By Joe Gerrard BRITAIN’S prime minister has announced she will quit as leader of the Conservatives, paving the way for her successor to resolve Brexit which remains at an impasse. Theresa May addressed Britain from outside Downing Street on Friday. She said her failure to take Britain out of the EU was a matter of ‘deep regret’ for her. “I will shortly leave the job it has been the honour of my life to hold,” May said. The prime minister, who formerly stands down from the Conservative leadership on Friday June 7, said Brexit was the ‘biggest challenge’ that any British government has faced during peacetime. She called for all sides to compromise as she prepares to pass on her office, and the Brexit mantle she has carried since 2016, to her successor.

About 10 Conservatives have since entered the race, including former Foreign Secretary and archBrexiteer Boris Johnson and exBrexit Secretary Dominic Raab. Whoever succeeds May will have to decide whether to work with Parliament as it stands, or to gamble on a general election to shore up the Conservative’s position. They could also choose to hold a second referendum, but will have until the scheduled leave date of Thursday October 31 to decide.

THE WEEK IN POLITICS By Joe Gerrard SPANISH political parties have been taking stock of their results in local, regional and EU elections held on Sunday (May 26). A swing towards the left-leaning Partido Socialista (PSOE) in all three elections mirrors the results of April’s snap general election. But the vote continued to be fragmented between several parties, further undermining Spain’s traditionally two-party system. Acting Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez said he was proud of his party’s showing in the EU ballot. He called on other parties not to strike deals with the far-right Vox at a local and regional level. Locally PSOE’s results were broadly positive with the party picking up seats in councils, including ones traditionally dominated by the conservative Partido Popular (PP). But the party and others on the left were dealt a blow in the Spanish capital and elsewhere. The left-leaning city-focused Mas Madrid, which held the position of mayor with Manuela Carmena, lost one seat leaving it with 19 while the centrist Ciudadanos

Earthquake study A NEW catalogue describes the geological effects of the 50 largest earthquakes in Spain since 4,000 BC to the present day. The work of the Spanish Geological Association (AEQUA) highlights the first earthquake recorded in the country, in the Cueva del Toro de Antequera in Malaga, between 4,200 and 3,700 BC. Among the other earthquakes included is the one which happened in 1829 in Torrevieja, Alicante and caused 900 deaths. The catalogue offers photographs and diagrams of the effects of each earthquake.

The PP appeared to have recovered some ground compared to the heavy blow voters dealt the party in the general elections. The PP won 12 seats in the European Parliament, five seats ahead of the centrist Ciudadanos. Coalition talks at all levels of Spanish politics have since begun. Meetings between Sanchez and other party leads will be back on after the prime minister decided hold off from discussions until after last Sunday’s vote.
Depopulation impact THE number of councillors standing for election in Spain has fallen by 1,220 since 2011 due to the effects of depopulation. Figures from the Territories Ministry showed 67,010 council seats were contested in last Sunday’s (May 26) local elections. The number is down from 68,230 in 2011. The drop in councillor numbers highlights the ongoing impact of depopulation on parts of Spain. The issue has not just affected the number of politicians able to stand in certain areas, it has also emerged as central to many parties’ pitch to voters. Parties including the conservative Partido Popular (PP), the centrist Ciudadanos, the leftist Podemos and the far-right Vox have all vied for votes in ‘Empty Spain’. Each has promised measures to tackle the effects of depopulation. The exodus of younger workers from small villages and towns has placed a strain on council finances, with fewer taxpayers able to support local infrastructure. The number of urban areas home to less than 100 people rose by 290 from 2011 to 2019. The problems arising from this is likely to influence politics at all levels for the foreseeable future.

Spain slammed for torture THE UN Human Rights Committee has found that suspected ETA terrorist Gorka Lupiañez was tortured by Guardia Civil following his arrest in 2007. Now the committee is urging Spain to ‘guarantee justice,’ and pay Lupiañez compensation. He is currently in jail having been sentenced to 50 years last April for kidnapping a family and other crimes. It is also calling on Spain to put an end to incommunicado detention, ‘which creates a context more conducive to torture.’ Lupiañez - who in 2009 was sentenced to 11 years in prison for belonging to an armed gang, illegal possession of weapons and the continued crime of falsifying an official document - denounced the Spanish State to the United Nations Committee in June 2015. According to his testimony, officers of the Guardia Civil arrested him in Berriz (Basque Country) when they found that

In his account, the ETA member said he was subjected to ill treatment and torture for eight days, both in the barracks in La Salve (Bilbao) and in the General Directorate of the Guardia Civil in Madrid. In his testimony, Lupiañez said he was beaten, had plastic bags put over his head, was deprived of sleep and subjected to death threats and other abuse. The
Guardia Civil denied the allegations. The ETA member initially took his case to the European Court of Human Rights, which decided ‘not to admit’ his claim. The committee said that it expects Spain to inform it within 180 days of the measures it will take in response to its Views, in accordance with the International Covenant on Civil Rights.

Juan Carlos to retire SPAIN’S King Emeritus Juan Carlos has announced he will retire from public life next month. The former monarch’s announcement that he would retire from official duties on Saturday comes four years after he abdicated and Spain’s current King Felipe succeeded him. Juan Carlos came to power following the death of former dictator Francisco Franco in 1975. He became Spain’s head of state and oversaw its transition to democracy which was completed with the adoption of the country’s Constitution in 1978. The former monarch appeared on Spanish television in 1981 to denounce an at-
tempted coup by Guardia Civil officers and called on Spanish citizens to back their democratic government. Juan Carlos then took a step back from the business of government, adopting a more ceremonial role similar to a British monarch. He courted controversy later in his reign, first with an outburst directed at former Venezuelan leader Hugo Chavez at an IberoAmerican Summit in 2007. He also faced criticism after it emerged he had injured himself on an elephant hunting trip in Botswana in 2012. Juan Carlos announced his abdication in June and has taken part in public engagements since.
Live round training A SHIP with Britain’s Royal Navy was approached by a Spanish patrol boat after it began firing live rounds off Gibraltar as part of a training exercise. Spain’s SPS Audaz patrol boat came near to HMS Sabre after the latter began its planned routine exercise. The incident occurred outside British Gibraltar territorial waters last Saturday. A Ministry of Defence spokesperson told Gibraltarian media the Royal Navy’s squadron in the British enclave had asserted its right to exercise in international waters. Both vessels remained at a safe distance throughout the training, the spokesperson added.
Cocaine extradition request PROSECUTORS have called on a Nicaraguan woman to be deported from Spain in connection with a €720 cocaine haul found in Asturias. Prosecutors claimed the woman was found with almost 4.2 grams of cocaine in Langreo in 2018. They have called for her to be deported from Spain and prevented from returning for eight years if found guilty. The case continues.

Anyone who has lived continuously in the UK between 1980 and 1996 (a minimum of one year) will not be able to donate blood in Spain due to the risk of transmitting mad cow disease. Similarly, there are restrictions if you have received a blood transfer in the UK. However, each region may have different rules about donation. Call the donation helpline on 935 573 500. Alternatively, visit www.donorsang.gencat.cat to find out if you are eligible. If you are eligible, you can give blood at your local hospital, or via the Spanish Red Cross (Cruz Roja) at one of their clinics, or in one of their mobile units. You can check dates and locations by visiting www.donarsangre.org. A donor card is not necessary to give blood. On the first visit you will have to provide DNI, NIE, passport or a driving licence. If you are already registered in the Blood Bank, you only need a donor card or a document with your name and surname. The process of blood donation takes just 10 minutes in which 450 ml are collected (equating to 10 per cent of the total blood circulation of an adult person). Despite huge technological advances, the only way for hospitals to obtain blood is through the generosity of the public. The blood is carefully screened for disease to make sure it is safe. After a tattoo, you must wait four months to be eligible to donate. After surgery, the exclusion period will depend on the type of intervention. After minor surgical procedures, you cannot donate blood for seven days or until you are fully recovered. After undergoing major surgery, you will not be able to donate blood for four months. The rarest blood type is AB, present in 1 per cent of Caucasians, according to research by the America Red Cross. Blood transfusions are carried out daily in Spanish hospitals with more than 6,200 patients being given them, of whom almost a quarter are fighting cancer and a similar figure receiving transfusions during or after surgery. ‘Fake marriage’ probe NATIONAL POLICE have arrested 17 people in connection with a scheme which arranged 186 false domestic partnerships and marriages of convenience between Spanish and South American citizens in Malaga City. The people involved charged €2,000 to process the paperwork in order for South Amer-
ican citizens to obtain Spanish residence cards. Police have investigated who they claim to be the administrators and the manager. The manager, a 62-year-old Spanish man who passed himself off as a lawyer, has been arrested for alleged document forgery and crimes against Spain’s welfare system.
‘Murder plot’ arrests CATALAN police have arrested three Colombian men in their early 20’s in connection with an alleged murder plot in Barcelona. A court in Barcelona has remanded one suspect in custody and has bailed the other two. An investigation into a fight

outside a Barcelona nightclub earlier this year, which resulted in one person seriously injured, led the police to uncover the plan. Police had left the investigation open in order to find more people involved in the brawl after having previously arrested one suspect.
Officers tapped the suspects’ phones and claimed they were planning to murder one of the people involved in the fight with whom they had had disagreements ever since. One of them was about to buy a weapon to commit the murder, officers alleged. The case continues.
SPAIN has been named as the OECD country with the worst income rates for those aged under 30. According to a recent report, 49 per cent those in employment between the ages of 15 and 29 are on ‘low wages,’ classed as pay less than two-thirds the country’s medium salary. Experts also warned Spain has a high percentage of qualified young people who are underpaid, leading to a ‘talent drain’ with workers choosing to move abroad for work. The numbers of qualified, underpaid young workers has risen by 20.8 per cent since 2006.

Climate emergency call by Joe Gerrard SPAIN should declare a ‘state of climate emergency’ and act immediately to combat climate change, 26 NGOs and campaign groups have said. Ecologists in Action, Extinction Rebellion Spain and Fridays for Future were among those who made the call. It comes as the world marked Biodiversity Day on May 22.
They said Spain should follow the example of Britain’s Parliament which voted to declare a climate emergency earlier this month. Mario Rodriguez, of Greenpeace Spain, said ‘climate legislatures’ should be formed after this Sunday’s elections. “We must take courageous measures in the next four years to avoid problems in Spain,” Rodriguez said. The groups have said they
will stage ‘quick and forceful’ protests until the Spanish government meets their demands. Thousands of Spanish school pupils joined hundreds of thousands around the world in walking out of classes to call for action on climate change. The Fridays for Future movement which co-ordinates the school strikes was one of the groups who made the call for a climate emergency to be declared.
Tragic death on flight TRAGEDY struck a Ryanair flight when a British woman aged 58 died of a heart attack as the plane waited to take off at Palma’s Son Sant Joan airport. Passengers were disembarked from the plane, which was due to fly to Edinburgh at 12.10pm last Wednesday, to give SAMU emergency medics access to the patient. Despite their efforts the life of the victim could not be saved.

FASHION company Inditex and the Mercadona supermarket are the two most respected companies in Spain, according to a new ranking. Merco Empresas y Lideres’ table placed oil company Repsol third and the Santander bank fourth. Inditex founders Amancio Ortega and Juan Riog and manager Pablo Isla joined Santander president Ana Botin as the most respected business leaders, according to the same ranking. The table was created by analysing more than 47,550 responses to a survey, 25 company evaluations and about 200 factors.

ECB eurozone growth concerns THE slowdown in eurozone growth is worse than expected, the European Central Bank has said, while Spanish output remains stable. Members of the central bank’s Governing Council said during their last monetary policy meeting in April that a ‘persistence of uncertainties’ continued to threaten growth prospects. Brexit, vulnerabilities in emerging markets and the ongoing trade war between the US, China and the EU were among the uncertainties, bank officials said. The bank decided to revise down economic output (Gross Domestic
By Joe Gerrard Product, GDP) growth forecasts from the 1.7 per cent predicted in December to 1.1 per cent. The bank’s warning comes as Spain’s central bank said in March that it expected GDP to have grown by 0.6 per cent during the first quarter of 2019. The Bank of Spain found the country’s GDP growth was being boosted by improved household and business investment. Spending increases planned by the left-leaning Partido Socialista (PSOE) if it can form a coalition and
pass its draft budget would also boost growth, the bank said. A fall in house sales and ongoing political uncertainty proved to be drags on growth in the first quarter. The fact that Holy Week fell in April this year is also believed to have had an impact on growth figures. Consumers spent 24 per cent more during the holiday this year compared to the last two, according to the Cetelem Seasonal Obersvatory. The value of Spanish GDP stood at around €1.2 trillion at the end of 2018, according to figures from the National Institute of Statistics (INE).
Santander plans job relocations SPANISH bank Santander is planning to offer relocations to more than 3,700 workers affected by branch cuts. The bank struck a deal with unions which would also see some workers offered early retirement or redundancies. Relocations were offered after Santander announced plans to close up to 1,150 branches, 26 per cent of those in Spain. The move comes as Santander continues to restructure its business after taking over the Popular bank. Santander bought the bank after Popular’s depositors withdrew money en masse in 2017.

Region plans first rent controls CATALUÑA is set to become the first Spanish region to cap rent increases after two of its governing parties agreed to adopt the measure. New regulations stop landlords from increasing rents by more than 10 per cent of the average in areas of high demand for property. Some homes will be eligible for increases of a further 5 per cent. The Junts per Cataluyna (JxCat) and Esquerra Re-
publicana de Cataluyna (ERC), who govern the region as part of a wider pro-independence coalition, agreed to implement the controls. The measures are designed to stop rent rates being pushed higher by rising demand, particularly for holiday rentals. Industry figures including Barcelona’s Chamber of Urban Property claimed it could drive away investment, limiting new property building.
Record profit SPANISH airline Volotea made a total of €13.6 million in pre-tax profits during 2018, 63 per cent more than the previous year and the best in the firm’s history according to its own figures.
Fashion sales OVERSEAS sales for the Spanish fashion industry fell during the first quarter of this year compared to the same period in 2018, according to sector data which showed they dropped by 21 per cent in Britain.
Job losses MORE than 5,470 workers in the Spanish banking industry were dismissed in 2018, according to the Bank of Spain which found there were 181,999 employees in banks at the start of this year compared to 187,472 12 months previously.

OECD on jobs automation THE amount of jobs at risk from the rise of automation in Spain is the third highest of all members of the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD). The international body said some 30 per cent of low-income jobs and 15 per cent of high earning posts could be automated out of existence in the near future. The rise of machines doing human labour is set to affect different industries unequally, according to the OECD. “Certain jobs will disappear, but above all the nature of many jobs will change,” the OECD said. It said skilled workers stood to benefit as their jobs would become easier while low-skilled workers could see their roles automated and themselves out of work. Spain should encourage firms to re-train workers to make the automation process as profitable and inclusive as possible, the body said. The OECD added Spanish productivity continued to be low compared to other countries. Productivity refers to the amount of wealth generated per hour worked on average.

Dia set for change A PRIVATE equity company has completed its takeover of the struggling Spanish supermarket chain Dia, with its new owners already making changes. LetterOne, owned by Russian tycoon Mikhail Fridman, took over almost 70 per cent of the company with Santander backing it as its main creditor. Karl-Heinz Holland has been appointed the new CEO of Dia and Stephan DuCharme has been made its president. The former replaces previous chief executive Borja de la Cierva. The changes at the top of Dia have all been communicated to Spain’s National Securities and Markets Commission (CNMV) regulator. Karl-Heinz Holland takes up the post of CEO after previously serving in the same post at Lidl from 2008 to 2014. “I believe in this company and I am committed to carry-

LEAPY LEE SAYS IT OTHERS THINK IT FOR reasons I find difficult to understand, I have to date, shied away from the issues which beleaguer South Africa. I really don’t know why. Possibly it’s because I have my hands (and heart) preoccupied with enough of the vitriol and differences of opinion which surround the Immigrant and Islamist problems, and subsequently felt yet another can of worms emerging into the daylight and landing on the ol’ boy’s page may just be a bit much to handle! Well, I’m afraid the shocking and despicable event which occurred last week has finally made me reach for the tin opener. What’s he ranting on about now? I hear you say. Oh, you hadn’t heard? Well there’s a surprise. Not like the UK media to keep such a despicable act of this nature under wraps. Ha! Well I’ll tell you. Last week a young South African municipal councillor Annette Kennealy was brutally murdered on the smallholding she owned in Louis Trichard, SA. Annette was an outspoken and tireless advocator of white farmer’s rights. Always aware of the danger she evoked she found it necessary to constantly carry a gun! (Nice!). Unfortunately, the firearm was not protection enough and she was discovered in her home, brutally bludgeoned to death with a pipe and a hammer. Before the usual suspects begin wingeing on about my knowledge on the subject, I can tell you

STRIFE: South Africa continues to struggle with its colonial legacy. that I have always loved Africa. Visiting this beautiful continent many times I have experienced both Rhodesia and later, Zimbabwe. I also stayed in South Africa during and after apartheid and twice toured the country with two number one records in the late 60’s. I have witnessed the empty shelves in the supermarkets of Victoria after the inauguration of Mugabe and expe-
rienced black locals slide up to me whispering that ‘it was much better under Mr Smith’! Well, before the snowflakes begin muttering empty antiquated sentiments and quoting 200-yearold events, I can tell you that the white inequality which prevailed in those dark days was NOTHING compared with what is happening there now. In what can only be described as genocide, the
white populace, especially the farmers, are slowly but surely being wiped out. Throughout SA antiwhite propaganda is being broadcast far and wide every day. Those who manage to hold on to their properties, including friends of mine, live surrounded by walls and barbed wire with dogs roaming and guns permanently at hand. Those less lucky are begging in the streets (where they are often kicked to death) while others with families are moved into ‘white squatter camps’ where they live in filth and squalor, with up to 100 to a bedroom and shared kitchen. Helpless white parents wander the streets unable to find work and watch their children go hungry, begging for bread and dying. And the West watches this despicable regime sink into an abyss of evil rapacity and bloodlust - even against their own - and does precisely nothing. Shame on us all. Especially those in the West who continue to support its vile leaders. A bunch of tyrannical murderers who continue to wipe out those who simply happen to be of a different colour. Oops, sorry. TECH FOR THE TIMID THE lifespan of new technologies is often shorter than a fruit-fly’s. So which country would you think is the most stubborn at letting go of the old stuff? Here’s a clue: if you thought electronic pagers, or beepers, died a decade ago, you obviously haven’t had any recent dealings with Britain’s embattled National Health Service, the NHS. They’re still using 130,000 of the things, around 10 per cent of all those running worldwide, at a cost of some €7 million a year. And they’re feeding 8,000 fax machines (remember them?). So entrenched is Britain’s healthcare Luddism that ‘axe the fax, purge the pager’ was actually introduced into law a while back. Not that the NHS is alone in its ‘obsophilia.’ A technophobic friend who was steadily shedding contacts as all around moved from letters to email, devised the worst of all worlds: his correspondents have to e-mail his business partner, who

prints the e-mail to paper and faxes it to him. He types and faxes his reply to the partner, who must run it through OCR (optical character recognition) in order to e-mail it onwards. Oh dear. Make no mistake, I love old tech, and the computer museum in Britain’s Bletchley Park is still high on my bucket list, definitely ahead of the barbed wire museum in
Kansas. I reach raptures of reminiscence when I hear that painful scrape and screech of a 90’s modem. But I have two VHS video machines in the attic, alongside an overflowing of audio cassettes, a uselessness of shortwave radios, two film cameras even the charity shop doesn’t want, and and and… Radio shows I presented in an
ancient life are lost forever. In practice. In principle they’re all on a stack of reel-to-reel tapes, irretrievable. And let’s not even mention all that data so many of us still have (or in reality don’t have) on floppy disks. Drafted the novel of the century on WordStar back in the day, perchance? Tough tittles, gone forever. A credit to Microsoft Word that it does at least still read WordPerfect files from long, long ago. Equally lucky are fans of those early Nintendo GameBoy devices - astonishingly, nostalgia for the 90’s original has now spurred a retro version able to play all the old games. Yes I miss my trusty Sony Walkman, but I absolutely wouldn’t swap its wow and flutter, muffle and hiss and a tendency to chew up cassettes for lunch, for the crystal clarity of a modern MP3 player. Fax me if you agree; my pager’s on the blink.
Back to the future SURPRISINGLY, some tech really was better in The Good Old Days. There’s a huge resale market for vintage valve amplifiers, still said to offer rounder, fuller audio than their transistorised successors. Serious photographers swear by the richness of film over digital. I was one of the first to ditch my typewriter for a Brother electronic machine which printed its output on thermal paper - until I lost months of work when the print faded fast. Word processing on an early Amstrad, I quickly met my match trying to print an envelope. Frustration mounted as the wasted envelopes piled up. My distinctly low-tech partner had finally had enough of the technotantrums: ‘For pity’s sake just write the damn thing by hand!’ Now why didn’t I think of that?

By David Worboys IF you were given the choice of the best era for your lifespan (80 years) which would you go for? It surely depends on whether you value material and technological advancement over moral and spiritual decline. I was born in 1939 just before the second outbreak of hostilities in Europe. The 40’s were years of war and sacrifice followed by years of deprivation and recovery. We spent the summer holidays on my grandparents’ farm in rural Bedfordshire. The house was lit by candles and heated by a fire in a grate with coke and newspapers. Our water came from the single village pump up the street where there was a solitary phone box, and the ‘bog’ was outside in the farmyard. We had a tin bath for personal hygiene and a mangle for rinsing the washing. We would return to Buckinghamshire after the holidays where there was electricity, running water, a flushing loo, a bath with taps - and, eventually, a washing machine. The next 70 years saw changes beyond our imagination. Many inventions and discoveries had already been

BEST ERA: Which would you choose? made before the war, but were not yet available for the benefit of the general public. In the 50’s, computers and air conditioning were the preserve of only the major companies while only the more affluent could afford televisions, washing machines, refrigerators and heaters in their cars.
By the 80’s there were also numerous facilities which now seem indispensable. Personal computers, colour television, automatic transmission, remote control, automatic check-outs and credit cards. Today we benefit from inventions and technological breakthroughs
which were simply inconceivable in the 40’s. The use of DNA for tracking criminals, genetics and genealogy, the worldwide web, keyhole surgery, the smartphone, non-stop flights across the world, factory and domestic robots, and camera surveillance. There are driverless cars, artificial
intelligence, facial and voice recognition, sensors and remote control. However, our planet has gradually become a less stable place. The 50’s were an age of continuing innocence and tolerance followed by the swinging 60’s of free sex and the emergence of drugs. In subsequent decades traditions and standards began to disappear. Discipline, humour and common courtesies declined and the family unit began to break up. Confusion over sex began in the 90’s. Thanks to climate change, illegal hunting and factory farming, thousands of species of animal are endangered - as is the very existence of Earth and its inhabitants. We have seen a rise in terrorism increasing the risks to everyday life from Norway to New Zealand. Prior to 1939 there were too few home comforts and human rights. After 2019, there is confusion about so many aspects of the world we live in and its continued existence. My conclusion is that our generation got it right.

Worst kind of parent Mike Senker In my opinion Views of a Grumpy Old Man BACK when I was bad at school, which was quite often, the school punished me then would inform my parents who would also punish me. Now what happens is the school threatens to punish the naughty kid and the parents threatens to sue the school. There are serious cases of tails wagging the dogs these days. In a recent incident someone’s little precious had been told off by a teacher, the parents decided to completely take the word of their child and without trying to make any contact with the school or said teacher, decided to have a vent about the teacher on Facebook. In my opinion that makes them look like one of the worst kind of parents - the obnoxious, overbearing, helicopter parent (one that’s permanently hovering over their child). The kind of parent no-one wants at a sports event because they’re always arguing with the referees or having a go about the coaches. The kind of parent whose kid can get away with murder (or at least with-
out ever picking up a pencil in class or completing their homework) because that kid knows he doesn’t have to do anything he doesn’t want to. I used to be a kid myself. Here’s one thing I know about them: sometimes they misunderstand or misrepresent, and sometimes they flat out lie. I think a bit more discipline at home and school might be needed to solve some of the problems we are seeing at the moment. Just a few words on the Europa League final - it’s a football match which is being played on May 29 between two London clubs - Arsenal and Chelsea. Where’s it being played? Well Azerbaijan’s capital Baku, of course. What makes it even worse is that one of Arsenal’s star players is being left out of the team because no one can guarantee Armenian Henrikh Mkhitaryan’s safety because of the hatred between Armenia and Azerbaijan. I’m not a***d about the history of all this but in my opinion if he doesn’t go neither of the teams should go - end of. If one of my mates was left out of something because of his race or religion I wouldn’t go either. Just tell them to do one and play the final at Wembley and done with. At least all the fans can get there without having to remortgage their house for tickets, flights and hotels! Sorted!

SPAIN’S newly-constituted parliament has not yet invested a president but it does have four MPs on remand. The fate of the Catalan politicians involved in the Proces intended to lead to an independent republic will not be known until their Lordships announce their verdict until next September. So unless there is a change of official heart Oriol Junqueras, Jordi Turull, Josep Rull and Jordi Sánchez who were elected last month to the national parliament for pro-independence parties will remain remanded on charges of sedition, rebellion and misappropriation of public funds. The Catalan separatists have been peddling their sob story outside Spain to anybody willing to listen to, with mutterings not long ago in the German Bundestag. There is immense irritation inside Spain amongst all but separatists when Junqueras and Co are referred to as political prisoners. Soto del Real where the four are banged up is no gulag but whichever way you look at it, those four are imprisoned because of their politics. Misappropriation of public funds has been around for quite some time, but archaic accusations of sedition and rebellion assures them of unmerited sympathy and has the undesired effect of making them look like political prisoners.
THE separatist parties in the Catalan parliament did a favour to Miquel Iceta, the leader of the PSC-PSOE socialists in Cataluña, by vetoing him as Speaker of the Senate. They did Pedro Sanchez a favour, too. Their refusal was parliamentary bad manners, but not to worry. Had they backed the nomination, Sanchez would never have heard the end of it
amid accusations from the PP, Ciudadanos and naturally - Vox, of being in thrall to the separatists and an enemy of Spain.
Dialogue v Negotiation CAYETANA ALVAREZ DE TOLEDO’S full name is much longer than that as she is a marchioness, although it would be unfair to link this to her far-right doctrines.
Predictably she was scathing about the outpourings of affection and praise for the late Alfredo Perez Rubalcaba. She particularly scorned his role in disbanding ETA, which she dismissed as negotiation. Naturally, when her mentor Jose Maria Aznar’s government had contact with the Basque terrorists, that was dialogue, wasn’t it, Cayetana.

Ortega was accused in the past of implementing ‘aggressive’ tax avoidance strategies, raising the question of whether Inditex pays taxes where its real economic activity takes place. Once Ortega began distributing his largesse it was unworthy, but possibly accurate, to suspect this was either conscience money or a philanthropic version of the pickpocket’s ‘distraction’ technique.

Stay ever-ready with our 12 hand luggage essentials guide and avoid untold stress if your baggage decides to go on a little trip all of its own… 1) Travel documents Keep essentials in easily accessible compartments/folders. Include passport, visa, boarding pass, insurance, hotel, car hire. Carry printed copies of bookings, in case your mobile dies or goes missing! 2) Valuables Carry cash, cards and valuables (including spectacles, prescription). Don’t risk loss, theft of precious items, so leave the crown jewels at home! Don’t keep cash/cards in one place. Split it between you and travel companions for added security.
BE READY: For anything when you travel, including the essentials to stay hydrated. 3) Prescribed medication Carry enough medication for at least two days in case checked luggage goes walkies. Carry your prescription and keep medication in original packaging to comply with security requirements. You’re permitted essential medicines of more than 100ml in hand luggage as long as you have supporting documentation from your doctor,
or the prescription. 4) First aid kit Painkillers, indigestion tablets, anti-diarrhoea, sickness tablets, allergy medication, plasters, bandages, antiseptic etc. Carry in a clear travel/toiletry bag. It’ll avoid simple ailments stopping you in your tracks. 5) Toiletries Basic travel-size items, like toothbrush, toothpaste, soap, razor. Keep
within 100ml liquid regulations. Carry anything else you can’t live without, like favourite make-up (you may not find your preferred brand locally, or it could cost you five times more!). 6) Spare clothes Trust me, this saves serious hassle if your luggage vanishes. Choose light, compact items. It’s amazing how small you can fold/roll shorts/ trousers and a top. Ladies - include a shawl and tie it to your bag handle to double-up as a blanket on the flight, or while travelling. 7) Snacks It pays to take food in case of unexpected delays (which may happen once boarded) and saves shelling-out airport prices. Critical if travelling with old or young travellers with special requirements. Carry chewing gum to help with ear popping and as an instant breath freshener. 8) Water Opt for a refillable water bottle. Silicone is reinforced and folds up to save space. Most airports have water fountains past security.
9) Mobile phone/tablet Stay connected and occupied during the journey. Remember earbuds/ earphones. 10) Portable charger/adaptor Choose light, compact, powerful chargers to avoid stress of battery failure on the move. 11) Pen and paper Yes it’s old-style, but always useful and takes up no room! 12) Travel insurance We would say that wouldn’t we? AS a writer, I’m often asked where do characters in novels spring from? Well, like people who make sausages, writers who create characters would sometimes rather their readers didn’t know exactly what’s involved in the production process. Sometimes it is not quite as edifying as you’d think! Most writers I know keep a kind of ‘filing cabinet’ in the back of their heads of people they’ve met that they dip into for ideas. Sometimes it’ll be the way someone talks breathlessly, lisping, repeating themselves (for instance, ‘I am clear that...’ As in: I am clear that Brexit means Brexit.’ Remind you of anyone? Maybe best not to go down that path). Or a physical tic - jaw clenching, chin scratching, nail biting (Oops! That you, too?). Writers are quite leech-like. Virtually everyone I’ve met (who’ll all remain nameless to protect the guilty) has ended up in my novels somewhere. Nobody’s safe! As for plot, it may be something totally inconsequential like a funny story or anecdote overheard on a bus, train, in the park. Or personal experience. LEGALLY SPEAKING Who pays the water bill? I am about to rent an apartment which has a community pool and in my contract it says that I have to pay the water bills. My friend who rents an apartment with a pool in another block doesn’t pay any water bills, so I wonder what the legal position is please? P W (Costa del Sol)

Sometimes the contract says the tenant pays the community fees as well. Most apartments have individual water meters but some buildings have one communal meter and charge the owners a calculated fee. Perhaps this is your friend’s situation. Or perhaps the owner has factored the water bill into his rental charge. One way or another, you can be sure that your friend is paying for his water. The communal pool has a separate meter paid out of community fees.

WHILE like most people I was not certain that Theresa May had shown she was the person to unite her party and country on a Brexit deal, I was still moved by her emotional resignation speech. I cannot imagine the pressures of being prime minister, both from her own backbenchers, the opposition, press, and even some of her Cabinet. At least Mrs May seemed like she genuinely believed she was trying to do the best thing for the country, even if no one else shared her views on what sort of Brexit we should have. I only hope the next prime minister will have the same commitment to their country. Laurence Hill
Saving a species DEAR editor, I read your article about the project to save the Iberian Lynx from extinction in last week’s paper (Issue 1768) and it made me very happy to read that something is being done to try and save this precious animal belonging to the Iberian Peninsula. As we are currently experiencing the worst spate of species becoming extinct in a very long time, it is so important that we all realise how important it is to take action to try to stop it. I know extinction is a natural phenomenon, but unlike in the past, when extinctions were caused by natural events, the current crisis is almost entirely caused by us humans. Though this project may be a drop in the ocean with regards to tackling the problem, it is a step in the right direction. Chloe Johnson
Three conversations DEAR Editor I am learning Spanish and if I say so myself, not doing too bad. I can chat happily with my Spanish neighbours, converse with my doctor in Spanish and generally, apart from my English accent have little problems, apart from one. The problem I have is how you can listen to three conversations at once, in any language, let alone Spanish. And yet the Spanish, particularly the ladies manage to have this ability. I was in a café the other day and there were four Spanish ladies at the next table, I saw and heard all four of them speaking at the same time. I had to have a small operation, the two nurses were wheeling me into the theatre with the doctor and all three of them were questioning me, at the same time, about whether I had eaten anything that morning. BRITAIN’S prime minister has become Brexit’s latest casualty. Theresa May’s resignation announcement on Friday comes almost three years after the result of the 2016 referendum dealt a lethal blow to her predecessor David Cameron’s premiership. May, who sided with Remain during the referendum, entered Number 10 Downing Street on a wave of pro-Brexit sentiment in her Conservative party. ‘Brexit means Brexit’ she vowed at the time, and she was going to make a success of it. Almost three years later the country watched as May said her failure to do so was a matter of ‘deep regret.’ Theresa May will, for better or worse, go down in history as Britain’s Brexit prime minister. The issue will, more than any other success of scandal, come to define her time in power. The deadlock which brought May low proved her government, parliament and Britain remains deeply divided over the biggest constitutional change made since it entered the then Common Market in 1973. Vote after vote showed there was no majority in the House of Commons for her deal, or for the options laid out buffetstyle after its failure. Cross-party talks between the Conservatives and Labour opposition also proved fruitless. May’s successor faces having to cobble a majority from a fragmented parliament together to pass either the current deal or a new version. For the sake of Britain and the fate of expatriates living here, May’s successor has to achieve what she could not.

PSOE makes gains in Spain and Europe AS most people know, this election did not use the UK’s almost unique ‘First Past the Post’ system. That’s what’s used in a General Election. The BBC’s Laura Kuenssberg has calculated if it had been a General Election using that system, there would be NO Conservative MPs in the UK Parliament at all! WOW! But before all the Brexit Party members get too excited about forming the next government, the arithmetic shows the Pro-Brexit parties got only 34.9 per cent of the vote when added together. The Pro-Remain parties added together got 40.4 per cent. The hopelessly split Tories and Labour would count as ‘Don’t Knows’ under current circumstances of course - and they got demolished. Cleaning and clearing out makes life brighter, lighter, happier. It feels like a brand new start. Leaving some of the old behind, starting a new life. By taking material things away from yourself you will automatically clear your head in a positive way. In this season alone and it happens worldwide, there is the highest rate of women and men starting to create a new dream. Or making a start from an older dream. As our well known friend Walt Disney once said: ‘All our dreams can come true if we have the courage to pursue them.’

To lose weight we first need to know what our body needs as an individual. This depends on weight, height, age and fitness level. Then, we can start to look at a long-term way of eating which is enjoyable and sustainable. This can even also depend on your body shape! Endomorphs are the most common body type to gain weight and struggle to get it off. It’s also the most effective shape to carb cycle with as they are the most sensitive to carbs! Endomorphs have a larger bone structure with higher amounts of total body mass and fat mass, and this extra fat seems to resist most efforts to get rid of it. The endomorph body type is solid and generally soft, and gains fat very easily. Endos are usually a shorter build with thick arms and legs. Carb cycling is a concept which has been around for some time. It means you can still eat carbs, as long as you eat them on certain days. You have low carb days (max 50g) for five days a week and mod-
THREE STEPS: Live your dream. In my belief this is it. If you really believe in your dream and you really want it to happen, it will happen. You can use many steps to fulfil your dreams. Things that instantly put a big smile on your face. No censorship. Let it flow. At this stage everything is possible. If you can buy a little note book and take it everywhere you go, from time to time write everything down concerning your dream project. Step 2 Say no to all the negativity in your life at this stage. Keep your thinking positive. This is your train and no one elses. You are at the steering wheel. Look into a mirror every day and smile at yourself. Even try to say a few positive words to yourself. Ask questions and give answers. Because this person in the mirror is going to make your dream come true. Don’t you just love that person? Step 3 Review a few times what you have been

Vaping ‘effective’ for quitting E-CIGARETTES are three times more effective at helping smokers quit than nicotine substitutes. According to a new study at University College London, vapers are 95 per cent more likely to give up smoking than those not using the devices. Meanwhile, those who use nicotine substitutes, such as patches or gum, were 34 per cent more likely to succeed than using nothing at all. The study of almost 20,000 smokers found those who were given medication to help their nicotine addiction were also 82 per cent more successful.

ADAM THOMAS, 30, was spotted partying with brothers Ryan and Scott on a yacht in Ibiza last Wednesday. The Thomas brothers soaked up the Spanish sunshine as they partied with pals on board the luxury liner. Among the trio’s friends group was Chris Fountain, who used to star alongside Ryan on Coronation Street. This holiday comes after Adam was rushed to hospital earlier this month when he dropped a weight on his face while training in the gym. Adam left his role in Emmerdale in 2018 after eight years of playing Adam Burton on the show. Corrie star Ryan has also had a stressful time, after being wrongfully accused of punching Roxanne Pallett with intent on Celebrity Big Brother last year.

TOWIE’S Chloe Sims has sparked reunion rumours with co-star Dan Edgar after recently jetting to Ibiza following their bitter split. After their brief fling, things ended badly as Chloe discovered Dan was also seeing his ex Amber Turner at the same time. Dan then met up with both his love interests in order to admit to his wrongdoings. Despite these events, Chloe looked happy to be united with Dan last week as they joined a group of pals for drinks in the Spanish sun. This holiday came at the same time as his ex Amber appeared to have moved on as she was spotted last Thursday with her new boyfriend on a yacht in Ibiza.

not enough. The guiding marketing principle is to make a property stand out from the crowd. Think about what makes it different from all the others: what makes it special, what is its unique selling point. It could be its outstanding location just metres from the sea. It could be its huge roof
terrace, complete with stylish chill-out zone. It could be the quirky nooks and crannies of a typical village house. A professional estate agent will be a dab hand at producing polished and effective property marketing reports. They will be able to recognise stand-out photos which best represent the property’s attractions. And they will choose the most appropriate order in which to group images online. Some estate agencies use professional photographers who know how to capture images to make properties look at their very best. Property sector professionals can also advise sellers on how to stage a property in preparation for photos and show it off to its best advantage. First impressions absolutely do count. To make sure a property reaches the widest possible audience, investing in a professional marketing strategy is a no-brainer.
Moving inland? HAVE you ever considered moving away from the coast, away from the hordes, away from the world of urbanisations? Recent reports show that housing inland is increasing in value far quicker than coastal properties. Spain adores its drag queens Barry Duke I THOUGHT I’d seen drag queens in every shape and size when I lived in Brighton, but nothing prepared me for the variety of unique drag acts I saw on my first holiday to Sitges, close to Barcelona. After watching three fabulous and very funny acts in a single bar on a Saturday night, I asked a barman whether drag was just a Sitges thing, or whether acts like these were to be found elsewhere. He chuckled and said ‘Spain loves its travestis (transvestites) and has more drag artists than a duck has quacks.’ When I settled in Spain I found this indeed to be true. But no amount of Googling explained why female impersonators are so popular in a country which, until the end of the Franco era and the collapse of the power of the Catholic church, treated anyone deemed a ‘deviant’ with the utmost cruelty and contempt. But there’s a great deal on the Internet about the history of drag acts in the

US and Britain, and one article explained the word ‘drag’ originated in the theatre to describe lengthy dresses worn by men that would drag across the floor. Spain even has the world’s only drag queen science populariser. Mario Peláez has a unique way of sharing knowledge. This doctoral student - ‘Sassy Science’ wears drag when discussing scientific
research and promoting gay and women’s rights. He has a number of English language videos on YouTube. What got me thinking about drag shows was the sad news that one of Benidorm’s top drag venues, the renowned Rich Bitch Showbar - which starred in ITV’s ‘Benidorm’ and BBC’s ‘Escape to the Sun’ - shut last month
when owners Gary Brown and his partner of 26 years, Michael Beddow, decided to return to the UK to open a hotel in Blackpool. For 21 years, Rich Bitch was one of Benidorm’s most popular nightspots where Brown, aka Miss Jordan Rivers, together with a bevy of drag queens, entertained literally tens of thousands of tourists and locals. Gary performed his swansong act as ‘the Vicar of Benidorm’ when he gave a commitment blessing to a couple who met and fell in love - Colin Wainwright and Angel Perez Martin. The event took the form of a joyful street party hosted by Company bar in the Old Town, and I was delighted to be the official photographer.
The combined commitment ceremony and farewell party for Gary and Michael attracted around 80 guests and developed into a lively celebration, with Company bar providing bunting, balloons and a superb buffet lunch. Have I ever dragged up? Yes. Once and it went horribly wrong. When I was 18 I got invited to a ‘vice versa’ party in South Africa. Men had to dress as women, and vice versa. I sneaked out of the house in a frock, wig and stiletto heels filched from my mum, but my parents found out when I was picked up by police who spotted me staggering home, wearing an ornate silk lampshade on my head. I was handed over to my parents in a very sorry state, and never heard the end of it for months.

And they will be hoping that their race engineers will be able to transfer the form shown by the new car in testing on the Nordschleife of the Nürburgring to their own slightly underpowered (by F1 standards) cars. It took the record for a frontwheel drive ‘compact’ car by almost three seconds, beating the best previous lap set by the Honda Civic Type R. The car, officially unveiled last Friday, will not be available as a mainstream model, but rather as a limited edition of a few hundred units (Renault has not said exactly how many). They will be available from next year with a ‘yet to be an-

nounced’ price tag. They are not expected to be cheap, with predictions being made they will top €50,000 each. It was developed as a racing car in a very short time, by a small dedicated team who focused on three aspects: maximum weight reduction (up to 130kg compared to the Megane RS Trophy excluding options), reworked aerodynamics and a more radical development of its drive axles. Together with its 300bhp engine it is truly quick - it has set the new officially approved record and reference time for the compact car segment of production cars of the Nürburgring, now a world-renowned race track and proving ground for cars and sports performance. It covered the 20.600km in 07’40’’100, and the official whole lap length of the Nordschleife 20.832km in 07’45’’389.

A clean future A NEW development could make the production of hydrogen much more economically and environmentally viable for use as a fuel for cars. At the moment most hydrogen is produced by splitting methane. Unfortunately, this produces not just hydrogen, but also lots of carbon dioxide - the very greenhouse gas hydrogen fuel cell motors are designed to eliminate. While the exhaust waste of hydrogenpowered vehicles is harmless water vapour, the whole exercise is rendered pointless from a climate change point of view if the CO2 emissions are merely transferred to factories producing the fuel instead. One of the main problems is that the major alternative source of hydrogen has been the electrolysis of water. With fresh water in relatively short supply the obvious source is the sea. But up until now this has not been a tenable solution for mass-producing hydrogen because of the salt in seawater. It quickly corrodes the electrolyser’s anode, making it too difficult and costly to be worth using. Desalinising the water first is possible, but the costs in terms of price and power makes it untenable for mass production. Now scientists at the USA’s Stanford University say that they may have come up with
the solution that could be a game changer. The researchers discovered that if they coated the anode with layers which were rich in negative charges, the layers repelled chloride and slowed down the decay of the underlying metal. They layered nickel-iron hydroxide on top of nickel sulfide, which covers a nickel foam core. The nickel foam acts as a conductor transporting electricity from the power source - and the nickel-iron hydroxide sparks the electrolysis, separating water into oxygen and hydrogen. During electrolysis, the nickel sulfide evolves into a negativelycharged layer which protects the anode. Without the negatively charged coating, the anode only works for around 12 hours in seawater, according to Michael Kenney, colead author on the paper. “The whole electrode falls apart into a crumble,” Kenney said, “But with this layer, it is able to go more than a thousand hours.” They have produced hydrogen from seawater using solar power as efficiently as electrolysing pure water. Together with other new developments the case for hydrogen fuel cell cars is getting stronger as costs come down. For the motorist the main advantage is range - as today you simply fill up at a pumping station rather than wait for a battery to charge.

CCCA goes arty! T’S an unusual thing for the Classic Car Club of Andalucia to participate in a static display, most members preferring to drive their cars rather than sit gazing at them in a car park. However, it is quite a good thing now and again to put these gorgeous cars on display so that the general public can look at and enjoy them and, at the same time, their owners can meet, socialise and have a closer look at each other’s cars. So that’s just what happened last Saturday in Mijas Pueblo. The CCCA teamed up with famous Swiss-American Artist Kelly Fischer who was presenting her work for the first time in Spain, curated by Vesaniart in collaboration with the Municipality of Mijas, the Embassy of Switzerland in Spain and HG Contemporary Art Center in New York. The CCCA would provide a super collection of 20 classic and modern classic cars to support the exhibition and the cars were parked close to the town hall in Mijas Pueblo where the exhibition took place. The artist specialises in a form of street art and the members enjoyed a tour, and explanation, of the exhibits given by Ms Fischer herself. There was a plentiful supply of Cava to

keep members going whilst the cars were shown and the tour enjoyed. Following that, a special BBQ lunch had been arranged at The Secret Garden in the village. All the club members attended along with the Artist, Ms Fischer, her husband and other local dignitaries which rounded off a most enjoyable day. The GCVA Rally in Gibraltar The annual GCVA (the Gibraltar Classic Vehicle Association) Rally took place in Gibraltar over the weekend of May 18 and 19. The event was a huge success with well over 100 classic cars displayed on the Saturday in Casemates Square. A marvellous opportunity for people to view these beautiful cars at close quarters, the square was packed with visitors doing just that. On the Sunday a classic car run was arranged which started near Algeciras and finished with an excellent lunch at Los Barrios. One for the diary next year. JEC in Action Again The CCCA had already had its May classic car run which

More cars in Mijas, the Datsun 240Z of Win Percy in the foreground. was featured in this newspaper recently and last Saturday was the turn of the JEC (Jaguar Enthusiasts Club) to enjoy a day out and a good lunch. The event, organised by JEC Chairman Philip Wray, started near Pizarra where, after the usual bacon sarnis and coffee, the route headed off to Zalea and then a fabulous climb over the Sierras de las Nieves enjoying some spectacular views and scenery along the way. The route went on through stunning countryside to El Burgo coming back through Alozaina and Yunquera before heading towards Coin and a first coffee stop at Venta Gallardo.
From here the route wound its way around Coin and up towards Barranco Blanco where a most enjoyable stop for Cava at the home of a JEC member, Mike Ashmore, was much appreciated. Lunch then was served at the Venta Cruz de Piedra just outside Coin which went down very well indeed! The next CCCA events are the Clubnight and dinner on Tuesday, June 4 and then a classic car run organised by Ian Giles on Saturday June 8 which will finish with a firstclass lunch at Da Bruno’s Italian restaurant near Mijas.

Always a fabulous event, there is an hour or so of Cava and canapes served before an excellent three-course dinner which is served ‘al fresco’ under the stars around the pool with the golf course as a
backdrop. It’s a stunning venue. Some fabulous entertainment has been booked with plenty of opportunity for dancing until the wee small hours. That’s it for now, more in the next issue.

Redemption for Valencia IN the end there was redemption for Valencia. Halfway through their centenary season, most of the club’s fans could see little reason to celebrate. They were just four points off the relegation places and the days of head coach Marcelino Garcia Toral looked numbered. But the club hierarchy held their nerve. They decided that the team had not being playing badly and just needed a change of fortune. Garcia Toral kept his job and now they are the holders of the Copa del Rey. They had to do it the hard way too, beating holders Barcelona 2-1. For the latter it was the end of an era. For the first time in 1,456 days they were not the cup holders. In terms of European competition, winning the showdown in Sevilla was irrelevant. Valencia’s road to redemption had already taken in Champions League qualifi-

CHAMPIONS: Valencia took the Copa del Rey. cation when they sealed fourth spot in La Liga the previous weekend with a 2-0 win against Valladolid. A season which threatened to be a disaster had been rescued then, but the Copa del Rey has turned it into a triumph. They can now look forward to the next campaign with huge optimism. Not so
for Barcelona. They may have won La Liga at a canter, finishing 11 points ahead of Atletico Madrid and 19 points in front of arch-rivals Real Madrid, but that is not good enough for the Catalans. They crave Champions League glory, but the team is starting to look over-reliant on one man - Lionel Messi.
Super regatta for Platoon AFTER a thrillingly close finish, Harm Müller-Spreer ’s Platoon crew clinched the first regatta title of the 2019 52 Super Series season, winning the Menorca event by a single point on Saturday. Second placed was Provezza, who led into the last race, but missed out on the overall win by just four seconds. Platoon finished strongly, super consistent tactician John Kostecki pushing the risk-reward equation more through the second half of the eight race series. Armed with excellent all-round speed across the event’s varied wind conditions - from six to 18 knots Platoon delivered a 2,2,1 from the last three races to narrowly eclipse Ergin Imre’s Provezza. It is Platoon’s first regatta title since they won the Rolex TP52 World Championship in 2017 in Scarlino, Tuscany. “The fleet is getting
stronger every year, it is definitely harder than ever to win and so we are super happy to start the season like this,” smiled Platoon’s Victor Mariño. “The week was not so good at the start for us, we started a bit slow and cold, but we got better day by day. There is a lot of pressure coming on us this year as everyone says ‘hey we need to win the season, we need to win the season,’ so at the moment we have won the first one, but we need to keep working hard.” Had Provezza only been able to close down Bronenosec in the final sprint to the finish line of the last race today, it would have been a different story. But the Turkish-flagged team have to be content with their significant improvements on what was a barren 2018 season when compared to their 2017 season, when

SPECTACLE: The 52 Super Series came to Menorca. they were regular podium contenders and won the Puerto Portals regatta. It is a welcome one-two for designs from the Judel/Vrolijk design studio, the first time in the eight-year history of the 52 Super Series where Judel/Vrolijk designs have taken both top spots. The defending champions Quantum Racing could not continue a 2,1,1 momentum over the previous two days, and with a seventh and sixth today, Doug DeVos’s crew
finish third. Müller-Spreer’s crew reap the benefit of a settled line-up - the majority have sailed together for five years and the only swap has been the addition of super-chilled Briton Jules Salter as navigator. “It is really good for Jules to come in and win the first event,” Mariño, the runner trimmer explains. “He is very calm, quiet and a really nice person to have on the boat, and he passes that calmness on to all of us.”
WITH all eyes on Madrid for Saturday’s Champions League final, Tottenham and Liverpool have been preparing for the match in different ways. Spurs have now arrived in Spain and are training at Real Madrid’s impressive complex today and tomorrow. Up until now they had been preparing for arguably the biggest match in their history quietly at their Enfield training ground. They called on under-23 players to make up numbers for the sessions. By contrast, Liverpool jetted to Malaga last week for warm weather training at the Marbella Football Centre. Their party of 70 trained behind closed doors for six days. Head coach Jurgen Klopp was keen to play a full-scale practice match against quality opposition, which was provided by Portuguese side Benfica B. The Reds won 3-0 against the team who play in the second tier of the Portuguese league. They then returned home to carry on preparations at their Melwood facilities. They will complete final warm-ups at the same real Madrid complex as Tottenham, but this time on Saturday morning. The match is being held at Atletico Madrid’s Wanda Metropolitano stadium at 9pm. Klopp and his squad return from their week-long training camp on Sunday and will continue their preparations at Melwood before jetting out to Spain again later this week. Tottenham have been working at their training ground in Enfield with Mauricio Pochettino calling up a group of under-23 and Academy players to bolster numbers. The Londoners travel to Madrid on Wednesday and will train at Real Madrid’s complex on Thursday and Friday, with Liverpool utilising the same facilities on Saturday morning ahead of the final later that evening.

While the plaudits were rightly taken by Lewis Hamilton, who held off Max Verstappen (who was relegated to fourth spot following a five-second penalty for a pitlane incident) for 30 laps on degrading tyres, Sainz was ‘best of the rest’ to finish sixth. Only the Mercedes of Hamilton, Ferrari of Sebastian Vettel, second Mercedes of Valtteri Bottas and Red Bulls of Verstappen and Pierre Gasly were ahead of him. It means that Sainz’s love affair with Montecarlo extends for another year. He has scored points in every
Monaco GP he has competed in, and is rightly proud of his record on one of the most difficult tracks on the F1 calendar. It hadn’t looked too good for Sainz and McLaren on Thursday, when technical issues meant he missed most of free practice in session one, but he still managed to qualify in P9. Then a combination of a scorching start, good pace and decent tactical decisions by McLaren saw him pick up three places by the end. Sainz enjoyed a fantastic start, surging past the Toro Rosso of Alex Albon before going around the outside of Daniil Kvyat through Massenet. start with, but we peaked at the right time, which was in qualifying [and] we peaked in the start picking off the two Toro Rossos.
