The youth had disappeared shortly before the body of Gloria Zavala was found wrapped in plastic bags in the garage of a home on the Carretera Militar. Belgian officers and investigators from the Spanish National Police’s Homicide Group also arrested the girlfriend of t h e v i c t i m ’s s o n , a 1 7 y e a r- o l d w h o h a d d i s a p peared at the same time. A post-mortem examination allegedly found that Zavala, 53, was the victim of a homicide, although the advanced state of decomposition of the body did not make it possible to determine the precise cause of her death. Police had made finding Gloria Zavala’s son a priority following the discovery of the body and determining that it was a homicide. A watch was put on Palma Airport, but the youth had already left Mallorca. A European arrest warrant was issued, with investigators discovering the youth had moved to Belgium. Spanish authorities are now seeking his extradition. According to the enquiries of the Homicide Group agents, the son would have lived for at least two days in the same house as his mother ’s corpse. A man who shared the house with the mother and son had gone away for a few days. It was on his return t h a t Z a v a l a ’s b o d y w a s found, when a strong smell led him to the trunk.

Brit cyclist death A BRITISH cyclist aged 49 has died while cycling one of the most famous routes in Mallorca. The man, who authorities have not named, is thought to have gone into cardiac arrest while pedalling the road to Cap de Formentor in Pollensa at around 4pm on Sunday. The road is known for its picturesque views and includes some tough climbs on the way to the lighthouse. Police are carrying out an investigation, but no suspicious circumstances surround the incident. They will pass a report on to a local judge. Mallorca is a very popular holiday destination for cyclists and is used as a base by several professional cycling teams seeking warm weather training. There have however been several accidents in recent months. In April nine German cyclists were taken to hospital when a Porsche SUV collided with the group on the MA-15 road near Capdepera.

Europe’s Hollywood THIS picture of a Wild West film set in Almeria Province comes as new figures show movie making was responsible for an investment of almost €123.8 million into Spain last year. The Spanish Film Commission’s data showed the Treasury netted almost €8.7 million in payments for social security from film contracts in 2018. The film industry contracted a total of 21,809 people during the year, according to the Commission. One of the latest productions, the
US-made neo-Western The Sisters Brothers starring Joaquin Phoenix and John C Reilly, had a budget of around €38 million for shooting in Spain. It was shot in Navarra’s Urbasa-Andia natural park in the summer of 2017. Spain has long been a favourite for filmmakers, particularly those from the US who sought locations for Western films in the 1950s and 1960s. Baby hurt in fall A 19-MONTH-OLD boy has been left with serious head injuries after his mother reportedly slipped and ‘dropped him 20 feet’ in Mallorca. The incident is said to have taken place at around 1.45pm on Sunday as the woman walked along a pedestrian walkway in Sa Calobra, north west Mallorca. According to Spanish media, the walkway ‘led to the Torrent de Pareis tunnels.’ Staff at a nearby restaurant

A rescue helicopter later transferred the boy and his mother to the Hospital de Son Espases’ Paediatric Intensive Care Unit, while police drove the child’s father to the hospital. The boy was said to be ‘conscious and crying’ after the fall. The hospital is carrying out further tests to determine the extent of his injuries.

Police presence felt AN increase on the numbers of police for the tourism season is bearing fruit already in Palma. The National Police have in the past few days arrested nine people, five for theft, two for violently robbing tourists and two for drug trafficking in Playa de Palma. As reported on May 19 police saw two men wrestling with another at 3.30am. The men, aged 24 and 36 years appeared to steal their victim’s phone. They were immediately arrested and two mobile

police saw them stealing from tourists on the beach. Three phones were recovered. The same duo plus a 23year-old man were arrested the next day at 1.45am when a patrol saw them stealing from two couples who were on the beach. Police recovered cash and phones and returned them to the victims. In yet another incident two men, aged 19 and 20, were arrested when they were caught allegedly selling a narcotic substance to a tourist.
A Royal anniversary THE King and Queen of Spain celebrated 15 years of marriage last night, an anniversary shared by the people of Mallorca who view them with a certain paternal pride. Felipe of Borbon and Letizia Ortiz
may have tied the knot on May 22, 2004, in La Almudena cathedral in Madrid, but they are seen to be at their happiest in Mallorca, which they visit frequently to stay in the Marivent Palace.
They bring their children to the island for their annual summer holiday and the Royal family is viewed by many locals as ‘Mallorquins.’ The EWN joins the people of Mallorca in wishing them a happy anniversary!

Keep the peace POLICE have been stopping motorbikes in an effort to protect the peace and quiet in UNESCO World Heritage site of the Serra de Tramuntana. Between February and April checks were made on 310 bikes, with police looking out for excessive noise and polluting exhausts. In total 119 motorbikes were reported for infringements. Sixty-nine of them broke permitted noise levels, one rider was over the alcohol limit, six had been using drugs, one had no insurance and 43 were reported for more minor infringements. Reporting to the Board of Mayors of the Serra de Tramuntana, it was explained that the Directorate General of Traffic (DGT) had also referred 145 bikes to the ITV centre for more inspections. Of those, 85 failed pollution tests.
Terrible teen A TEENAGE girl waited for her mum to fall asleep then allegedly smashed her over the head with a glass plate because her mobile phone had been confiscated as punishment for not tidying her room. According to police the 16year-old said she was angry because she was expecting an important call. She waited several hours before getting her revenge when she crept into her mother’s room. After the alleged assault the victim called Local Police who arrived to find her dripping with blood from a cut and sporting a 10cm bump on her head. They searched the house and found the alleged assailant hiding in a wardrobe. The Juvenile Prosecutor’s Office has been notified, while the minor remains in the family home. The mother claims this is not the first time she has had to call for police help, alleging that at 12 years of age her daughter tried to poison her by injecting floor cleaner into a yoghurt.

Lift fright FIREFIGHTERS had to rescue a pregnant woman who was trapped when a lift fell several metres before coming to a halt between two floors. The incident happened in Calle Fra Bernat Burdils Street on Saturday. Investigators say a mechanical failure caused the lift to suddenly drop with the woman inside. The 112 emergency service mobilised the Bombers de Mallorca, Local Police and Guardia Civil, who went to the woman’s aid. They managed to rescue her unharmed, although she was given a precautionary health check before leaving the scene.
Badly hurt AN Englishwoman has been left with serious injuries after she drove a Mini Cooper the wrong way on the Via de Cintura and collided with a tow truck and another vehicle. Her three companions, all English, were also hurt, but less seriously, in the incident at 5am on Saturday on the Andratx motorway near Cala Mayor. Ambulances and Guardia Civil were rapidly on the scene to care for the injured. The driver has been charged with reckless driving and road safety offences and is said by police to have failed an alcohol test.
Test case A POLISH woman who was involved in an accident that left a 15-year-old girl dead, fled the scene and tested four times over the alcohol limit wants her case dismissed on a technicality. The woman’s lawyer says her client should be cleared because Campos Local Police did not read her her rights in her own language after her arrest. This meant she did not know she was entitled to ask for a blood test to confirm the breathalyser reading.
A PENSIONER aged 76 returned from a week’s holiday in Madrid to find her front gate forced open and three strangers living in her Palma home. Then to make matters worse, police said they were powerless to do anything and the squatters continued to live on the ground floor of the two-

The police then explained to the lady that they could do nothing more than write a full judicial report and recommended that she go to the court to file a complaint. The squatters have since moved out voluntarily after considerable media pressure was brought to bear.

Saved from eviction NEIGHBOURS managed to postpone the eviction of a 71year-old woman from her home of 49 years. A judicial officer had gone to an address in Calle Malgrana, Son Cladera to enforce an eviction order only to turn on his heels when he arrived to find a crowd who had been mobilised by the pensioner’s son, Pepet Isern. He had called on them to gather to ‘applaud’ his mother as she left her home. But instead they were left cheering when she was allowed to stay instead. He said that the eviction was due to a mortgage which his father, who was suffering from dementia, had been ‘forced to sign’ by an unnamed third party. The family has filed a lawsuit to declare the mortgage void. They want the courts to freeze any eviction notices until the legal process has been resolved.
By Dilip Kuner IT would appear that tourism bosses have decided you can have too much of a good thing. So far, the Conselleria de Turisme has cancelled the registration of 5,439 tourism beds with a declared aim to reduce the number of holiday places available in Mallorca by 120,000 to a maximum of 435,000. It claims that this will not affect visitor numbers as people will visit at other times of the year instead of the peak summer months, thus ‘extending the season.’ Last year 13.1 million foreign tourists visited the Balearics as a whole, spending €14.82 billion. The regulations being applied now are restricted to Mallorca as the other islands have their own tourism plans. The drastic reduction in beds dates back to a law passed in 2016, which envisioned removing tourism accommodation from the official register that had been granted as an ‘exception’ to existing regulations.

INUNDATED: Streets were submerged when water mains ruptured.
Floody hell EVEN when it doesn’t rain Palma has a flooding problem. Several streets were inundated on Saturday, with locals left to wade through water when a mains pipe ruptured. And as if the flood damage was not bad enough, residents in large parts of the city found themselves with no water when the supply was cut as the emergency was dealt with. To make matters even worse electricity company Endesa re-
ported it had to shut down several transformer stations because of the floods, leading to power cuts. Traffic was affected too as several roads had to be cordoned off to allow workmen to complete emergency repairs. Local Police sandbagged the entrances to underground garages in the area in an effort to stop them flooding, while many shops suffered significant
water damage to stock. Firemen evacuated one building as they were worried it may have been structurally affected by the water. The neighbourhoods of es Forti, Son Armadams and El Terreno were the most affected from water cuts after the pipe in Plaça Forti broke at 7.15am. It was not until 7pm that supplies were finally reconnected to all the affected areas.
A burning issue TAKE care in the sun was the message given as health authorities got together to launch a skin cancer prevention campaign for the Balearics. The College of Pharmacists of the Balearic Islands, IB-Salut and the Spanish Association Against Cancer AECC reported that last year 401 people on the islands were diagnosed with the disease, up from 374 cases detected five years ago. Although cases are up, prognosis is better due to earlier detection and better treatment - but prevention is always better than cure, said the organisations. And crucial to prevention is to know what skin
‘biotype’ you have. “The people of northern Europe are not genetically adapted to the level of sunshine in Spain,” said the AECC’s Javier Cortés. So the campaign is setting up informative tents in six municipalities across the Balearic Islands where people will be able to get free skin biotype determinations, and thus know what sun cream protection factor to use. Of the 401 people diagnosed with skin cancer in the community, 144 were women and 257 were men. In addition, 145 of those detected were from Palma, and the vast majority (279) were over 75 years old.

Espionage on display A NEW exhibition exploring the intrigue and espionage of the conquistadores has gone on display in the Alcazar Real, Sevilla. Until June 30, the historical site will be hosting the exhibit, Atlas and Illuminated Codices, spanning a period of 40 years in which Spain and Portugal tried to conquer the ‘new’ world. Of particular interest is the Miller Atlas, a ‘false map’ created by Portugal in 1519 to throw Spain off the scent of Magellan’s trip to the Moluccan Islands. A ‘near original’ copy of the map, considered the most important in the history of cartography, will included in the event, which celebrates the 500th anniversary of the first round-the-world sail.

Brit causes havoc A 33-YEAR-OLD British man injured three police and one Guardia Civil officers whilst being arrested in Puerto del Carmen, Lanzarote. The individual reportedly became violent during his arrest due to an altercation in a bar. He also broke the window of the police vehicle in which he was to be transferred.
Once in police custody, he wrecked the prison cell’s door and was then taken to the psychiatric area at the Molina Orosa Hospital. The Court Number 1 judge of Arrecife has reportedly charged the man for causing injuries, damages and resisting police officials. He will face multiple fines including €1,500 for property damages.

THE WEEK IN POLITICS By Joe Gerrard MEMBERS of the Spanish Cortes met in Madrid to be sworn in on Tuesday following April’s election, with the day underscoring stark changes to the political landscape. Lawmakers in the Congress of Deputies and Senate form Spain’s 13th legislature since the country’s transition to democracy. The new crop of lawmakers, which in many ways provides a snapshot of Spain’s current body-politic, has already made history in a number of ways. Spain has had a two-party system up until the last decade or so. The left-leaning Partido Socialista (PSOE) and the conservative Partido Popular (PP) together took the vast majority of seats. Tuesday showed that the current political landscape could not be more different. Spanish politics has fragmented into a multi-party system, highlighted by the fact PSOE is far short of an overall majority despite winning 29 per cent

On the left the previously ascendant PSOE now shares its side of the parliamentary hemicycle with the leftist Podemos, which retained its foothold in the Congress of Deputies. The right is now divided into three, with the PP only having nine seats more than the centrist Ciudadanos and the far-right Vox entering the Con-
gress for the first time. The latter party’s congressional breakthrough is significant because it is the first time such a party has had national representation since Francisco Franco’s dictatorship. Some members of the proCatalan independence Esquerra Republicana de Catalunya (ERC) also made history for being the first Congress members to be sworn in while in
police custody. Oriol Junqueras and three others on trial over the 2017 independence push were allowed to leave prison for the ceremony and entered the Congress building with police escorts. The day also saw a changing of the guard at the head of the Congress and the Senate. Mexitxell Batet took over from Ana Pastor as president of the lower house while Manuel Cruz became head of the Senate. Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez chose to nominate two Catalans for the posts as an apparent gesture to the region which continues to be rocked by fallout from the independence push. Talks to form a government are now set to continue but all parties have said no announcements will be made before this Sunday’s elections.
European elections SPANISH voters are set to cast their ballots in EU elections on Sunday, with 54 seats out in the 751-seat European Parliament up for grabs. Almost 420 million Europeans are set to vote in the election. The last European Parliament election was held in 2014 when Spain’s conservative Partido Popular (PP) won the most seats with 16. Unlike countries such as Britain which are divided into constituencies for the EU election, Spanish members of the European Parliament (MEPs) represent the entire country. They are elected by proportional representation, meaning each party is allocated seats according to its share of the vote. Spain’s MEPs join European-wide groupings made up of similar parties from other countries once in the Parliament. The left-leaning Partido Socialista (PSOE) is part of the Progressive Alliance of Socialists and Democrats (S&D) and the PP is in the European People’s Party (EPP). The centrist Ciudadanos members sit with the Alliance of Liberals and Democrats for Europe (ALDE) while leftist Podemos MEPs sit with The European United Left (GUE/NGL). The European Parliament votes on budgets and other legislation and for holding the Commission to account. What to do in the event of an emergency in Spain LIVING in Spain can bring with it an array of issues which may not have been encountered when living in the UK. There are lots of things to consider, and we are here to help try to make the transition and life in Spain a little easier by compiling a series of helpful facts and figures relating to a variety of topics. HERE in Spain there is a general number for all emergencies, 112. No area code is needed and the number can be called from any phone, including mobiles without a Spanish SIM card. The responders speak a number of languages, and you can also fax or SMS 112. In addition, there are individual emergency numbers, depending on the type of assistance you need. It’s a good idea to keep a printout of them handy, in your bag or wallet, in the home and in the car. And it can’t hurt to have a few helpful Spanish medical/emergency terms written down, just in case you don’t get an English-speaking member of staff. National Police, also known as National Police Corps (Cuerpo Nacional de Policia, CNP), deals with criminal offences and public order in towns and cities, and can be contacted by calling 091 or 902 102 112. The latter was set up for non-Spanish to report burglaries, car theft or a break-in when documents and belongings are lost or stolen. Available in English from 9am to 2pm, all week long, the service is also available in French, German and Italian. Once the telephone report is made,
claimants have 48 hours to check and sign their statement at the police station of their choice. Spain withdraws warship escort by Joe Gerrard SPAIN has withdrawn a warship which was escorting a US aircraft carrier through the Red Sea while tension between the two countries, their allies and Iran increased last week. The Mendez Nuñez frigate was part of a 12-ship flotilla which including the USS Abraham Lincoln carrier. The Spanish ship was set to sail with the others to the Persian Gulf before making for India. It comes as tensions increased between Iran and the US after the former allegedly sabotaged four oil tankers off the coast of the United Arab Emirates (UEA) last week. Spain’s Defence Ministry said the ship was withdrawn due to technical problems. A spokesperson for the US Department of Defence said the relationship between Washington and Madrid remained ‘strong and close’ following the decision. Spain’s opposition conservative Partido Popular (PP) accused the ruling left-leaning Partido Socialista (PSOE) of making Spain internationally by withdrawing the ship. The alleged sabotage from Iran comes as relations between Tehran and Washington continue to deteriorate after the latter pulled out of the Iran nuclear deal. Spain and other EU countries, which remained signed up to the pact, have said they will continue to stand by it. The US has begun reapplying sanctions targeting Tehran.

By Joe Gerrard BRITAIN’S prime minister is set to redouble her efforts to pass her Brexit deal and said she will make a ‘bold’ offer to win over sceptical lawmakers. Theresa May plans to hold talks with government ministers in a bid to find a way through the Brexit impasse. The prime minister wrote in the British press: ‘I still believe there is a majority in parliament to be won for leaving with a deal. ‘When the Withdrawal Agreement Bill comes before MPs, it will represent a new, bold offer.’ Deadlock continues after the House of Commons rejected her Withdrawal Agreement three times. May plans to table her draft deal for a fourth and likely final vote next month. Changes to the deal itself are impossible unless the prime minister returns to Brussels which has repeatedly ruled out reopening talks. But May could attempt to get further changes to the Political declaration which sketches out

Airline posts new losses
Budget goes back to Cortes THE Spanish government’s draft budget for this year is set to go before lawmakers again following the general election called after it failed to pass. Acting Commerce Minister Reyes Maroto told a meeting of businesspeople in Bilbao budget plans would be put to the Cortes when the new government is sworn in. Coalition talks between the left-leaning Partido Socialista (PSOE), which won the most seats in the Congress of Deputies following the election, and opposition groups are ongoing. Maroto said: “I hope investments will be channelled from the new 2019 budget

Pro-Catalan independence parties refused to support it over the region’s ongoing independence dispute. Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez then called a snap general election to shore up PSOE’s position in the Congress of Deputies. The party had 86 seats in the 350-member lower house.
Budget plans unveiled in January included €7.5 billion in infrastructure investment and a youth unemployment plan backed by €670 million. The government also budgeted €220 million to help tackle gender violence. It also made headlines for a proposal to raise the minimum wage by 21 per cent to €900 a month, the largest increase in Spain’s democratic history. The government planned to fund spending increases by tax hikes on large firms, particularly technology companies. Finance Minister Maria Jesus Montero said the budget would make the Treasury an extra €5.7 billion.
GERMAN-BASED airline TUI has posted an underlying annual loss of €300.6 million which it said was due to overcapacity in Spain and the grounding of some planes. The airline said it expected to take another profit hit if its 15 Boeing 737 MAX planes remain grounded. The company said it would clarify the situation by the end of this month. Excess supply in its operations in and out of Spain have also contributed to the losses which were higher than the €168.7 million posted last year.

Spanish firm takeover plan BRITAIN’S opposition Labour party said it would take the Spanish Iberdrola’s subsidiary Scottish Power into public ownership if it takes power. The party said the company and others made huge profits while raising bills for customers and holding back infrastructure investments. Rebecca Ling Bailey, Labour’s Shadow Energy Secretary, said: “Many people would be surprised to
know the cables that carry gas and electricity into their homes are owned by Wall Street investment banks, multinational conglomerates and sovereign funds.” Labour plans to compensate Scottish Power shareholders with Treasury bonds. Scottish Power made more than €1 billion in pre-tax profits last year. Labour said it would nationalise other firms.
Bankrupt families THE amount of Spanish families who declared bankruptcy for not making debt payments fell by 3.3 per cent in the first quarter of this year compared to the same period of 2018, National Institute for Statistics (INE) figures show.
Reform call THE CSIF trade union has called for a change in labour laws to bring worker representation to staff in small and medium-sized companies after finding that 4.3 million of Spain’s 17 million workers are employed in non-unionised firms.
New post SPANISH Economy Minister Nadia Calviño has been appointed president of the board of governors of the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) alongside her ministerial brief for a year, replacing current head Jyrki Katainen.

LEAPY LEE SAYS IT OTHERS THINK IT THIS week I had decided to write something completely different. One of the banes of being a columnist is the never ending search for subject matter. As most of my offerings generally cover rather more serious, and consequently somewhat depressing subjects, I decided to look around for something a little lighter - hopefully to raise a smile or two. Well, in a sad reflection of the world we now live in, I’d have had more chance of finding something good to say about Diane Abbott! With the advent of ever increasing political correctness, even the wonderful British quality of being able to find some humour in its problems is slowly being eroded from our culture and way of life. Everywhere I looked it was doom and gloom. With the usual monotonous regularity, the UK’s entry for the Eurovision Song Contest came in last. When are people going to realise that we wouldn’t win it with Delilah, Hey Jude or even Little Arrows!? Europe hates us. And those who don’t hate us are jealous. Entering for this antiquated heap of pure elephant dung is a complete waste of time and effort. The usual affronts to our democracy and culture were also in full, unacceptable prominence this week. A highly respected GP faces a watchdog enquiry for asking a Muslim woman to raise

I wonder who would have been blamed if he had prescribed the wrong treatment? I would also like to reiterate here there is no mention in the Koran that this garment should be worn. It has no religious significance whatsoever.
It is merely insisted on by Muslim males to protect their women from the prying eyes of other men. Mayor Khan was also in the news again. This time he managed to stick his oar in to one of our most treasured British institutions by ordering the removal of a new Wimbledon poster which depicted strawberries and cream! Don’t ask. I can
only assume it had something to do with food and Ramadan! Also climbing firmly aboard the idiot bandwagon this week came ‘ealth n’ safety. Apparently Leicester Council has banned Women’s Institute cakes from a local hospice. The WI ladies had been providing cakes to 2,500 annual patients of the hospice for 40 years, but now the local council have decided that factory products are ‘more hygienic.’ Ha! I know what I’d rather have. Still looking for something amusing? Forget it. The most disturbing action this week was the convergence of young Muslim men onto the peaceful members of Tommy Robinson’s election campaign in Oldham. Video evidence clearly shows a hoard of young Asian men, many totally masked and carrying weapons, being actually escorted by police to the Robinson rally on a local housing estate. There they proceeded to pelt Robinson and his team with bricks and missiles until the police finally broke it up. At no time were Robinsons people the aggressors, but the next day the meagre press reports merely stated ‘rioting broke out at a ‘far-right’ rally of Tommy Robinson on an Oldham estate’. You get the impression that all the politicians care about is their own backside and their own power. We are still in limbo land, without any real clue as to what is going to happen. We do not even know what the real projected effects will be of leaving the EU, half-leaving, remaining in etcetera etcetera. We have been lied to, treated like fools, and subjected to the most ridiculous scaremongering by both the politicians, in England and at the EU, and by the mainstream media in the UK. All I do know is that I would not trust our politicians to tie their own shoe laces, let alone ours. Where are the real leaders of the type that Britain apparently used to produce? As a ‘normal’ chap, all I can say is, ‘sort it out!’ Darren Price
A black legacy YOUR article about the so-called Spanish ‘black legend’ in last week’s paper (Issue 1767) intrigued me. I have often thought the stereotype of the typical Spaniard is unpleasant in films. When I want to watch something about Spain I go with something made by people from the country for this reason. What interested me was finding out that these stereotypes have a long history, the legacy of which lingers on. I think it’s important to understand the historical context and development of such things to learn about their present state and how we can move away from tarring everyone with the same brush. Leapy Lee could do with a history lesson along those lines to cure him of his obsession with negative stereotypes about immigrants, made all the more ironic because he is one. Stuart McPherson
Having a ball I READ your article about the Cannon and Ball show in last week’s Costa del Sol edition (Issue 1767) with interest and nostalgia. The Cannon and Ball show was a favourite of mine and a fixture in our home in the 1980s. I always found their social observance comedy hilarious, it was a real commentary on life and society at the time. They were great ambassadors for the north of England too. It’s great to hear the duo are still going strong and that they were able to entertain expatriates on the Costa. And it was lovely to see they managed to reunite with an old friend of theirs. Bored of Brexit DEAR Ed My God what a lot of whingers we are! We whinge about the roads, the dogs, the noise of the fiestas, the food, the local council, the internet, the weather, the Spanish drivers, the apparent lack of manners of our host nation, the list is endless. In fact, I have decided that many Brits just enjoy whingeing, to the extent I am convinced that if the 100-metre whinge were to be an Olympic sport then the British would win the gold medal, with little competition. Maybe, just maybe, some of us misery-guts should open our eyes a little, and see what a beautiful country Spain is. It is a land of tradition, of rugged beauty

FINDINGS this week which showed almost three quarters of legally registered foreigners cannot vote in Spain has rightly led to calls for change. Labour Ministry data showed about 27 per cent, or almost 1.3 million, of the roughly 4.7 million foreigners registered in Spain would be entitled to vote in elections this Sunday. Spanish voters are set to cast their ballots in local, regional and European elections. Legally registered foreigners who have told their council they intend to vote can cast ballots in local and EU elections. But foreigners and expatriates are not allowed to vote in regional or national elections. Being able to vote is a crucial part of the social contract in the community in which people live. The democratic compact which sees citizens elect politicians to speak on their behalf means politicians have an incentive to respond to their needs. Those same politicians, be they a local councillor, Congress deputy or Member of the European Parliament (MEP), take decisions that affect all our lives. Although many expatriates may not have decided to become fully-fledged Spanish citizens, we still form part of and contribute to the community around us. Many own businesses or work in those run by Spanish entrepreneurs. They pay taxes, use Spanish hospitals, send children to its schools and are protected by its police force. It follows therefore that expatriates and foreigners should have a say about how the institutions which affect them and their families are run.

The problem is that Iberdrola have almost a complete monopoly over energy supply. You only have to look at British TV with their numerous ‘switch energy suppliers’ adverts to get the best deal to realise that in Spain that option is not really available. One of the most expensive destinations for holiday rentals this summer in Spain Tourism will go down, then the hoteliers will complain and put their prices up and the law of unintended consequences will take over. We have a word for it, it’s called communicating. Some people are very good at it and they inspire others who are listening. So saying something, asking questions, listening… all this is part of our human communication. Where is all this leading to y o u m a y a s k y o u r s e l f . We l l , I would like to talk to you about asking ‘the right’ questions. We can discuss for days and weeks what talking is all about, even the question part. things in my life?’ or ‘What is good about myself?’ or ‘What can I do to like myself much more?’ or ‘How can I make this day a great day?’ These questions are far more powerful put in a positive way and they will help your brain get used to this new positive way of thinking, which is always a good thing. But salad can be way more exciting than that! If you are on a high carb day,
why not add some chickpeas or cous cous into the mix? Experiment with different cheeses, meats, fish, and even some fruits go fantastic with salads, especially strawberries, orange and kiwi. On low carb days you can treat yourself to a high fat dressing such as full fat mayo, ranch or Caesar dressing and for high carb days stick to low carb varieties such as vinaigrette. Greek salad is fantastic for low carb day with the addition of feta cheese, olives and olive oil.
Good fats and delicious! Just be aware of sneaky ingredients which you think would be ok but are notoriously high in carbs! Carrot, sweetcorn and a large amount of avocado can tip the balance too much the other way, so be careful! The Italian classic Insalata Caprese is also a perfect low carb light option. New builds drive market NEW build homes are driving the rise in the Spanish market, according to latest figures from the National Statistics Institute (INE). In the first three months of the year a total of 133,989 homes changed hands in Spain, representing an increase of 3.7 per cent over the same quarter last year, when 129,164 houses were sold. Of those, 26,100 were new houses, compared to 22,810 in the same period last year. This represents an increase of 14.4 per cent. On the other hand, the second-hand market, which has been the locomotive of sales since the market recovered, has lost some of its dynamism. In Q1 2019 just 1,565 more second- hand homes were sold than in the same period of 2018 - 107,889 units as opposed to 106,354. When it comes to house prices there has been a substantial increase on average, according to the College of Registrars. This stood at 8.7 per cent for the first quarter, compared to Q1 of 2018, with the College saying: “Current house price levels are close to those reached in the second half of 2010 and at the end of 2005. Therefore, below historical highs, but not far away.” With respect to the month of March, the INE says that the purchase and sale of homes rose by 6.8 per cent compared to the same month

In March housing sales fell in the Basque Country (4.4 per cent), Valencia (1.9 per cent), and Aragon (4.9 per cent). But where it really came to a halt was in the islands. The Canary Islands recorded a drop of 10.1 per cent year-on-year and in the Balearic Islands, the figure was down 6.6 per cent, due largely to a slowdown of sales to foreigners as prices have risen. In the other regions sales rose especially in La Rioja (44.5 per cent), Cantabria (27.8 per cent), Castilla La Mancha (23.8 per cent) and Andalucia (19.7 per cent).

LAURA PENN ‘PENN TO PAPER’ A RECENT post that I read on TripAdvisor saw a certain Miss Linda Ling from Singapore asking for advice about whether to honeymoon on Mallorca or Malta. The general opinion was Mallorca for scenery, Malta for history. As I write to you this week sitting on the marvellous island of Malta, I am in the perfect position to advise Miss Ling (although that means attempting to be objective about Mallorca, which holds a piece of my soul, as well as my heart.) Both are small islands begin with the letter ‘M’ and both are in the Mediterranean Sea. Mallorca is much bigger weighing in at 75 kilometres from north to south and 100 kilometres from east to west compared to Malta’s miserly 27 kilometres long and only 14.5 kilometres wide.
Malta and Mallorca compare and contrast Not surprisingly given the difference in size, more people live on Mallorca with the Balearic’s largest island having more than twice Malta’s population of 433,111. Mallorca is a Spanish island whilst the Republic of Malta is the world’s 10th smallest and fifth most densely populated country. Now the differences become subjective. Mallorca is very Spanish with a slight sprinkling of historical Moorish influence. Malta is a right old mix of Arabic, Greek and even British influences. They drive on the left (like in Blighty) and speak English (but also Maltese which sounds like Arabic). They eat kebabs and also fish and chips. They drink ouzo and gin. Allin-all Malta is a terrific holiday destination for the average Brit

work which has halted. Halfbuilt hotels and apartment blocks are clearly visible on any trip away from the capital Valetta. In the heady days of the 80’s Malta welcomed 1.2 million visitors, but this number
dropped significantly to just 640,570 British tourists in 2018. Compare to the 2,310,425 Brits who visited Mallorca in 2017. The Maltese economy has suffered due to the fickle trends in the UK holiday market. Spain has been spanking Malta’s tourism buttocks for over 30 years. Yes Malta is smaller, but even so... surely it is not the extra hour plane journey which puts off British holidaymakers? I am fortunate enough to be visiting Malta for work, but I would definitely return for a holiday. On my flight from Manchester there were a host of young things travelling to a BBC Music Festival on the island, so clearly efforts are being made to attract more visitors. The Malta Marathon is an-
other big pull in February and the island has, in recent years, promoted itself as a centre for medical tourism. Valetta is a centre of excellence for a quick nip and tuck or a liposuction holiday. I would advise Miss Ling to honeymoon in Malta. It is a terrific little gem of an island with a bottomless well of history and incredible architecture. The island’s legendly heroicism during the Second World War does not surprise me. The islanders are a proud and stubborn people, yet incredibly friendly and welcoming. New Cayenne Coupé PORSCHE would appear to have decided you cannot have too much of a good thing and has launched another Cayenne Coupé variant to its lineup. The latest incarnation of the speedy cross-over SUV vehicle is now available to order and will arrive at German dealerships at the end of July. Called the Cayenne S Coupé it sits between the Cayenne Coupé and the Cayenne Turbo Coupé when it comes to power. The 2.9-litre V6 engine with twin turbocharging is at the heart of the latest model and develops 324 kW (440 PS). The maximum torque of 550 Nm guarantees powerful acceleration and goes from 0 to 100 km/h in 5.0 seconds in combination with the standard Sport Chrono Package. This figure drops to 4.9 seconds with the three optional lightweight sports packages. The top speed is 263 km/h. Prices for the Cayenne S Coupé start at €99,657 including VAT and country-
specific equipment. In addition to the Sport Chrono Package, the standard equipment includes speed-sensitive Power Steering Plus, 20-inch alloy wheels, Park Assist at the front and rear including reversing camera and Porsche Active Suspension Management (PASM). Porsche is extending the model range with the S Coupé. The Cayenne Coupé with 250 kW (340 PS) and the Cayenne Turbo Coupé with 404 kW (550 PS) will be available at dealerships from the end of May. The highlights of the Coupé include sharper proportions with a unique rear section, an adaptive rear spoiler, two different roof concepts and a rear seat bench with the characteristics of individual seats, with a sitting position that is lowered by 30 millimetres compared with the Cayenne. The vehicle features a 2.16 m2 panoramic fixed glass roof as standard or optionally a contoured carbon roof with typical sports car look.
The 2.9-litre twin turbo engine of the Cayenne S Coupé delivers its maximum torque of 550 Nm across a wide engine speed range between 1,800 and 5,500 rpm. Both exhaust turbochargers have been arranged in a central turbo layout inside the cylinder V. This results in an engine with compact dimensions, allowing it to be installed in a lower position inside the vehicle. This in turn lowers the centre of gravity and improves lateral dynamics. The shortened exhaust paths between the combustion chambers and the turbochargers produce a particularly spontaneous engine response and a faster buildup in power. The exhaust manifold has been integrated into the cylinder head, which reduces the weight and means the manifold is surrounded by coolant. This ensures highly efficient combustion, particularly under full load.
POWERFUL: The Cayenne S Coupé. A roof line that drops significantly more steeply towards the rear also lends the Cayenne S Coupé a particularly dynamic appearance. This effect is supported by a fixed roof spoiler, which accentuates the distinctive Coupé silhouette. The front windscreen and A-pillar are shallower than in the Cayenne, courtesy of a roof edge that has been lowered by around 20 millimetres. Newly designed rear doors and wings broaden the shoulders of the vehicle by 18 millimetres, contributing to its overall muscular impression. In each Cayenne Coupé model, a fixed roof spoiler is combined with the new adaptive rear spoiler as part of Porsche Active Aerodynamics (PAA). The spoiler is harmoniously integrated
into its silhouette. and extends by 135 millimetres at speeds of 90 km/h and above, increasing the downforce on the rear axle. This has benefits for driving stability.

By Dilip Kuner IN a hugely disappointing weekend for the Spanish motor racing legend, Fernando Alonso’s dream of an Indianapolis 500 victory was shattered when he failed to qualify by just 0.019mph. He was fourth fastest out of six drivers who were competing for the final three places on the grid via a four-lap speed test. He managed a 227.353mph average, which ultimately was not quite good enough with American Kyle Kaiser squeezing him out on the last run of
‘bump day.’ Earlier, Alonso had finished 31st in qualifying, with the top 30 making the grid. Alonso had left F1 - in which he was twice champion - with the declared intention of winning the Indianapolis 500 as part of his campaign to win the ‘triple crown.’ It is an unofficial title which involves winning three of motorsports’ most prestigious events, the Indianapolis 500, the 24 Hours of Le Mans and the Monaco Grand Prix. Only one driver in history has managed the feat - the UK’s Graham Hill. Alonso has two of the titles in the bag, with him claiming the Le Mans trophy alongside Toyota teammates, Kazuki Nakajima and Sébastien Buemi last year. His win at Monaco came in 2007. Speaking on social media after failing in Indianapolis he said: ‘A difficult week, no doubts,’ adding: ‘We tried our best, even today with a com-

A series of problems in practice, including a high-speed crash, left Alonso and McLaren struggling to catch up in the weekend qualifying. The other two drivers to make it on to the grid on ‘bump day’ were Canadian James Hinchcliffe and American Sage Karam. The race, over 200 laps, is on Sunday at 7.30pm.
