Mammoth challenge for cancer research LANCASTRIAN Ian Hunter is heading for his Mojacar holiday apartment the difficult way. The 64-year old is taking on the mammoth challenge of cycling the 1,500 miles from Morecambe to the Costa Almeria to raise funds for Cancer Research UK after losing his mum Joyce to the disease last year. Ian is due to set off today (Thursday May 23), and is aiming to make it to Mojacar by mid-June. His goal is to raise £5,000 for the cancer charity. What makes Ian’s endeavour especially impressive is that he is a relative newcomer to cycling, only taking up the sport after a health scare. “I first squeezed myself into Lycra for the first time in 2017,” Ian told the Euro Weekly News. “After having a mini stroke in 2016, I decided my health needed my attention, so I got on a bike. “I took part in my first sportive, the West Coast Classic, then the York 100 and the Cumbrian Cracker Exhilarating. I accomplished distances I never thought possible and I’m

So the idea of the M2M1500 cycle challenge was born. Ian has owned a holiday
home in Mojacar since 2005. His late mum visited him on the Costa Almeria many times and was planning to make one last visit. Sadly that never happened. Ian will now pedal from Morecambe to Mojacar in her memory, setting himself the target of covering the distance
in three weeks. “I’ve had to train very hard to get to a level of fitness to enable me to face this challenge and the demands it will place on my body,” Ian told EWN. “I’m ready to get started now” “We are absolutely delighted that Ian has decided to attempt such a great challenge to raise money for Cancer Research UK, commented the charity’s local fundraising manager for Lancaster, Vikki Bassek. “He has being doing lots of preparation and we’re sure he is going to have an amazing experience. We can’t thank him enough and want to wish him all the very best.” Vikki added: “Cancer Research UK has made enormous progress in the fight against cancer. Family feud leads to further arrests G U A R D I A C I V I L a r re s t e d f o u r members of the same family in connection with the fatal shooting of a 50-year-old man in Gador on May 10. Last week’s detentions of a married couple and their two sons in the Catalan town of Figueras followed the arrest of a 23-year-old immediately after the incident involving two families, in which the victim’s brother and a third person were also injured. The Guardia reported the four detainees had fled to Cataluña to evade justice. Officers found two firearms, bullets, six kilos of cannabis and € 2 , 0 0 0 i n c a s h i n t h e p ro p e r t y where the four were staying.
INVESTIGATIONS into a wave of warehouse break-ins led to the arrest of three suspected members of a criminal gang in El Ejido. Guardia Civil attributed four robberies from warehouses in the Poniente area of Almeria and one in Gualchos in Granada to the three, also charging them with belonging to a criminal organisation. One was hit with an additional charge for driving without a licence. Guardia launched the oper-

Gang bust for wave of warehouse break-ins ation at the beginning of the year in response to a number of reported thefts from warehouses specialising in supplies for the intensive agriculture industry and household electrical appliances on industrial estates in Adra, Viator and El Ejido. All the break-ins were at night.
Steps taken by the gang to cover their tracks, including constantly changing the vehicles they used to get around when carrying out the robberies and having up to four different mobiles, complicated the investigations. The three found themselves under arrest after the Guardia caught them with a
lorry full of stolen white goods. Officers recovered most of the items stolen from businesses in Adra and Viator, among them washing machines, fridges and numerous roles of irrigation piping. They also seized two lorries and three cars, one of them a top-of-the-range model. The Guardia said the operation remains open, not ruling out further arrests or uncovering evidence connecting the gang with other break-ins.

Hash in the home THREE men are under arrest after police found nearly 350 marihuana plants growing in a property in the Pescaderia neighbourhood of Almeria. A police search also netted a kilo of marihuana buds and items such as halogen lamps and ventilators for promoting the plant growth. A search of a second property led to the seizure of a gun and 20 bullets. Police investigations into a possible indoor marihuana plantation in the area began in March. One of the detainees, a 67-year old man, lived in the property and had been responsible for keeping an eye on the plants. The other two, 18 and 22-year old brothers, went there daily to tend the crop and pick it when ready.
Fugitive thwarted POLICE detained a fugitive from French justice as he tried to board a ferry to Morocco at Almeria port. Police checking passenger documentation discovered the Bordeaux High Court had issued a European Arrest Warrant for KSS in July 2015 for drug trafficking, money laundering and involvement with a criminal organisation. The 38-year old faces a seven-year prison sentence.

THE Andalucia regional government tourism minister announced plans to boost visitor numbers in Almeria through meetings with travel agencies and tour operators and by promoting the province at international cruise tourism fairs. He also identified golf as an important area for expanding the province’s tourism sector.

Europe’s Hollywood THIS picture of a Wild West film set in Almeria Province comes as new figures show movie making was responsible for an investment of almost €123.8 million into Spain last year. The Spanish Film Commission’s data showed the Treasury netted almost €8.7 million in payments for social security from film contracts in 2018. The film industry contracted a total of 21,809 people during the year, according to the Commission. One of the latest productions, the
US-made neo-Western The Sisters Brothers starring Joaquin Phoenix and John C Reilly, had a budget of around €38 million for shooting in Spain. It was shot in Navarra’s Urbasa-Andia natural park in the summer of 2017. Spain has long been a favourite for filmmakers, particularly those from the US who sought locations for Western films in the 1950s and 1960s. Texas Hollywood-Fort Bravo, Mini Hollywood and Western Leone were all built in Almeria Province’s
Tabernas Desert as sets for the Spaghetti Westerns. A Fistful of Dollars, Vengeance and Boot Hill were among the Westerns shot on location in the desert. Other films including the epics Lawrence of Arabia, El Cid and King of Kings were also made there. Recent years have seen US TV series Game of Thrones shoot in various locations across Spain. The British film Off the Rails and the US move Wonder Woman 1984 were both shot in Spain last year, in Mallorca and Almeria City respectively.

Cash points ALMERIA provincial council has approved a €7 million Financial Exclusion Plan under which the administration will install cash points in municipalities which lack the service and have no banks. Council spokesman Fernando Gimenez said local authorities only have to provide the space and an electric connection.

Shot to leg in airport GUARDIA CIVIL shot a man in the leg after he got into a restricted area of Almeria airport. Spanish press reported officers found the Polish national close to the runways early on May 14. He made off and a chase began. At one point there was a struggle with officers. The man took out a knife and lurched towards them, managing to get away again. According to Spanish press, one of the officers fired a warning shot

in the air, but he kept going. An officer then fired ‘at a non-vital area’ to immobilise him, although he got as far as La Cañada de San Urbano before the Guardia detained him. He was operated on at Torrecardenas hospital and is reportedly out of danger. The Guardia launched an investigation into how the man managed to get into a restricted zone and why he was there.
Romance online scam A MAN suspected of conning five women he befriended on the internet out of money is under arrest in Roquetas de Mar. Guardia Civil said MANF got to know his victims in Murcia, Cuenca, Castellon, Madrid and Tenerife through dating websites. After faking a romantic interest, he fed the women a sob story about a serious illness or car problem and asked for a loan. The suspected scammer promised he would visit them

to pay them back. But once they deposited money in his bank account he cut all contact, and never paid back the money. One victim reported he threatened to send Eastern Europeans to ‘get rid of her’ if she didn’t pay him more. A second alleged he told her he’d upload a sexy video she’d sent him voluntarily onto websites and social media if she failed to immediately pay him €1,500.

23 - 29 May 2019 THE AUAN homeowners’ association has welcomed news that the Andalucia regional Territorial Planning ministry has stepped back from further action in a British-owned house demolition case as ‘a good day for common sense.’ AUAN reported Noel and Christine Payne have endured nearly 16 years of court proceedings defending their Albox home. The property was constructed in 2003 with planning permission granted by Albox Town Hall. But that permission was overturned by the regional government, and the couple have been defending their home against demolition ever since. Association president Maura Hillen told the Euro Weeky News that in February, a court suspended the demolition order against the house until such time as the local authority confirmed the property could be granted an AFO (an alternative form of documentation for houses built in contravention of planning law). Last week AUAN found out the Junta de Andalucia’s lawyers had appealed the decision, a move described by Hillen as ‘contrary to everything the new PP and Ciudadanos government

Speaking to the press, Andalucia Territorial Planning Director General Jose Maria Morente, said: “We will review the legal situation of the case and we will resolve it on that basis, acting within the law, but being
aware it is not the same thing to pursue a planning illegality 10 years after the fact, as it is to pursue it when it is happening.” Morente said the current regional government is working on new legislation so there is no repeat of ‘dramatic’ situations such as that of Mr and Mrs Payne. “On behalf of AUAN we applaud this new attitude on the part of the Junta, and we are very happy rational thinking has finally prevailed,” Hillen commented. AUAN revealed the association is due to have a working meeting with the Andalucia development and territorial planning and environment ministers and Junta provincial delegates for development and environment to talk about the new legal text which will shortly be approved to extend the figure of an AFO to ‘asentamientos’ (houses awaiting legalisation via a town plan), something housing associations have been demanding for years.

Holiday hash harvest A MAN from the Netherlands is under arrest after Guardia Civil uncovered a marihuana plantation at the isolated farmhouse he was renting out near Lubrin. Officers checked out the property on the back of information there could be an illegal drug production operation in the area. They discovered 120 cannabis plants. At the time, the tenant, identified as JKA, was moving the plants in flower pots. The weather had damaged the nearby greenhouse where the plants had been growing, and he had been shifting them indoors. The Guardia said they suspect the 24-year-old came to Spain and rented ‘out of the way,’ rural properties for the time it took to grow the marihuana, returning to the Netherlands after harvesting a crop.
Game over A ROBBER who snatched four video game consoles from an El Ejido shop found himself under arrest just minutes later. The shop assistant told police the 42-yearold forced open a cabinet and grabbed the consoles when her attention was elsewhere. When he took off down the street the employee pressed the panic button. Police were on the scene almost immediately and set about searching the area. They came across the suspected thief trying to hide inside a car. Officers found stolen items in the vehicle, among them the consoles.

Provincial plus points TOURISTS visiting Almeria in the first quarter of the year ranked hotel accommodation, service and leisure activities as some of the province’s best features, an Andalucia Institute of Statistics survey shows. Also scoring highly were the province’s wining and dining offer, its beaches, countryside and national parks, public safety, cultural heritage, and the low level of traffic relative to other parts of Andalucia. The survey put the number of tourists coming to Almeria between the beginning of the year and the end of March at 358,732, 0.5 per cent down on the same period of 2018. Visitors stayed for an average of 7.8 days and typically spent €66 a day.

Fit for purpose VERA Council has kitted out the Marinas-Bolaga, Puerto Rey and El Playazo beaches with nearly 1,000 metres of new removable cement walkways. The local authority has been gradually replacing the old wooden walkways over recent years. Beach and Public Services councillor Francisca Garcia said the new ones are made from a more durable, practical material and can be left on beaches year-round, while wooden versions are taken up at the end of the season. She also said they are cheaper to maintain. The councillor explained that roughly half the wooden walkways have to be repaired during the summer months due to wear and tear caused by the weather, the number of people using them and maintenance and cleaning vehicles driving over them.
PRACTICAL: The new walkways are safer, more durable and cheaper to maintain, according to Vera Council.
“They get very deteriorated, leaving a number of sections impassable, and every year there are accidents as a result,” the councillor commented. Vandalism and the thefts of sections of the wooden walkways created further headaches for the local council, according to Garcia. “This means they have to be constantly repaired,” she pointed out. “To all this you have to add the expense in personnel which installing and removing five kilometres of wooden walkway means annually.” A further advantage of the new walkways, the councillor reported, is they are suitable for people with restricted mobility. Vera mayor Felix Lopez underlined the importance of tourism for the local economy, and of beaches being fit for purpose 12 months of the year and fully accessible.

Sport and culture investment focus SPORT, culture facilities and events are the focus of a new round of provincial government financial assistance for municipal councils. Almeria Council has awarded €155,000 to some of the province’s smaller municipalities for repair works and upgrades. Funding goes to projects including the installation of an access ramp to the Armuña del Almanzora municipal swimming pool and works on a shooting range facilities in Gador. The provincial council also allocated funding for Ohanes’ Night of Culture and Tradition and for the sixth Ruta BTT Sierras de Seron mountain bike race. Council president Javier A Garcia said the purpose of the investments was ‘to improve residents’ lives.’
Brits outnumber other nationalities ARBOLEAS and Partaloa are two of the 21 municipalities in Spain where foreigners make up more than half the population. Figures from the National Institute of Statistics also reveal 600 of Partaloa’s 710 registered foreign inhabitants are British. Nearly half (327), are aged over 65. In Arboleas 83 per cent of the municipality’s 3,054-strong foreign population are UK citizens. The total number of inhabitants is 4,586.

THE Asprodalba Association has cut the ribbon on its new residency and centre in Vera. More than 200 people attended last week’s inauguration of the two buildings, which have been constructed on land ceded by Vera Council, with financing from the Unicaja Foundation, the ONCE Foundation and the local authority. Asprodalba President Francisco Alonso described the residency, education and leisure centre as “a really important step forward for us,” with facilities “which are fully equipped and adapted to the needs of this group in an environment in which they feel protected and completely comfortable, avoiding the alienation of people with an intellectual disability.” He pointed out that in many cases adults with this kind of disability are the responsibility of family members “who due to their financial situation and advanced age cannot give them the daily attention they need.” In an emotional speech, Alonso talked about “the road on which Asprodalba set out more than 40 years ago with the aim of fighting for the rights, social inclusion and quality of life for people with an intellectual disability.” Based in Vera, Asprodalba, or the Levante Almeria Association for the Promotion of People

ADRA Council is promoting a healthy lifestyle with a week of activities focusing on fitness and well-being. Running from Monday until Sunday, June 2, the Adra Week of Health is a collaborative initiative between the council and the Andalucia Health Service. Highlights will include workshops for the elderly on active old-age and protecting
against falls, and a talk on celiac and a gluten-free diet. There will be a ‘Nordic Walk,’ a ‘Healthy Circuit’ and a wholesome breakfast held on the seafront promenade. Relaxation workshops, yoga and Zumba will feature as well. There will also be an International No Smoking Day run, and on the final day a hike along by the Archidona lagoons.

Customers will now be able to buy handmade products created in Spain and sold postagefree through Correos’s new platform; Correos Market. The initiative, which is designed to address the issue of jobs in rural areas by creating
opportunities for local entrepreneurs, will include a variety of different products. Sergio Peinado, the company’s head of Digital Solutions, said: “The goal of Correos has always been to provide services to citizens and companies, wherever they are, by structuring the territory thanks to the capillarity of their net-

THE oldest man in Spain with Down syndrome has celebrated his 74th birthday at a party organised by his carer. Gerardo Alonso Estupiñan, who lives in Tenerife, was surrounded by friends, family and colleagues at a party at the day centre he attends. The event in Telde was also attended by two mariachis to serenade Gerardo, who loves music and plays several instruments. The pensioner has lived with a family member since his parents died and has been attending a local day centre for several years.

Star teacher joins politics TONI GARCIA, the man named Spain’s best teacher, has announced he is running to become councillor for Education in San Javier. The educator, who won the title at the Educa Awards 2018, is running for the left-leaning PSOE party in Alicante. Garcia told media he wants to change the face of politics, and has made a ‘social commitment’ to his party. by Joe Gerrard RISING inequality in Spain is fuelling political strife and internal divisions, global economists have warned as another NGO claimed more Spanish families are slipping below the poverty line. T h e Wo r l d I n e q u a l i t y Lab, a group of economists which headed by Thomas Piketty, stated political division had grown in line with rising inequality in the wake of the last recession. “ We b e l i e v e t h a t i n equality, linked to austerity, unemployment and economic scarcity in general, is one of the main causes of the political instability the country is going through,” the authors of the report told Spanish media. “In general, both the initial boom of Podemos, the Catalan independence situation and now the rise of Vox can be understood as d i ff e r e n t r e s p o n s e s t o a shared economic malaise,” they added. The report found that although average incomes in Spain rose above pre-2007 levels for the first time in 2017, gains were concentrated among the wealthiest. The poorest 90 per cent saw wages rise by 2 per cent while the richest 1 per cent saw increases of 24 per cent. Save the Children has also claimed that more than two fifths single-mother families are at risk of poverty, and that a quarter live in extreme hardship. It comes as the Catholic Church’s Caritas Foundation claimed more than one half of families with only one working member face greater risks of poverty and social exclusion. The organisation claimed labour reforms undertaken by the previous conservative Partido Popular (PP) government increased the amount of temporary work, cutting salaries and hours.

What to do in the event of an emergency in Spain LIVING in Spain can bring with it an array of issues which may not have been encountered when living in the UK. There are lots of things to consider, and we are here to help try to make the transition and life in Spain a little easier by compiling a series of helpful facts and figures relating to a variety of topics. HERE in Spain there is a general number for all emergencies, 112. No area code is needed and the number can be called from any phone, including mobiles without a Spanish SIM card. The responders speak a number of languages, and you can also fax or SMS 112. In addition, there are individual emergency numbers, depending on the type of assistance you need. It’s a good idea to keep a printout of them handy, in your bag or wallet, in the home and in the car. And it can’t hurt to have a few helpful Spanish medical/emergency terms written down, just in case you don’t get an English-speaking member of staff. National Police, also known as National Police Corps (Cuerpo Nacional de Policia, CNP), deals with criminal offences and public order in towns and cities, and can be contacted by calling 091 or 902 102 112. The latter was set up for non-Spanish to report burglaries, car theft or a break-in when documents and belongings are lost or stolen. Available in English from 9am to 2pm, all week long, the service is also available in French, German and Italian. Once the telephone report is made,
claimants have 48 hours to check and sign their statement at the police station of their choice. In the case of robbery, where threat or force has been used, victims should call 091 at the time, then go directly to a police station to make a report. The Guardia Civil is a military force which operates mostly in rural areas and is responsible for drug offences, fatal car accidents, robberies and murders, and can be contacted on 062. Local Police (Policia municipal) cover their local town or city area for traffic offences and control, lost property and crimes such as theft and neighbourhood disputes. You can reach them on 092. And a special helpine, 016, has been set up specifically to report instances of gender violence. For an ambulance (ambulancia) and health emergencies, call 061 or 112, and in the case of a fire call the fire brigade (cuerpo de bomberos) on 061 or 112. For problems at sea, the Maritime Rescue Service (Salvamento Seguridad Maritmo) can be contacted by calling 900 202 202, and the Red Cross (Cruz Rojo) on 902 222 292. There is also a Red Cross 24- hour helpline 900 100 333.

THE WEEK IN POLITICS By Joe Gerrard MEMBERS of the Spanish Cortes met in Madrid to be sworn in on Tuesday following April’s election, with the day underscoring stark changes to the political landscape. Lawmakers in the Congress of Deputies and Senate form Spain’s 13th legislature since the country’s transition to democracy. The new crop of lawmakers, which in many ways provides a snapshot of Spain’s current body-politic, has already made history in a number of ways. Spain has had a two-party system up until the last decade or so. The left-leaning Partido Socialista (PSOE) and the conservative Partido Popular (PP) together took the vast majority of seats. Tuesday showed that the current political landscape could not be more different. Spanish politics has fragmented into a multi-party system, highlighted by the fact PSOE is far short of an overall majority despite winning 29 per cent

On the left the previously ascendant PSOE now shares its side of the parliamentary hemicycle with the leftist Podemos, which retained its foothold in the Congress of Deputies. The right is now divided into three, with the PP only having nine seats more than the centrist Ciudadanos and the far-right Vox entering the Con-
gress for the first time. The latter party’s congressional breakthrough is significant because it is the first time such a party has had national representation since Francisco Franco’s dictatorship. Some members of the proCatalan independence Esquerra Republicana de Catalunya (ERC) also made history for being the first Congress members to be sworn in while in
police custody. Oriol Junqueras and three others on trial over the 2017 independence push were allowed to leave prison for the ceremony and entered the Congress building with police escorts. The day also saw a changing of the guard at the head of the Congress and the Senate. Mexitxell Batet took over from Ana Pastor as president of the lower house while Manuel Cruz became head of the Senate. Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez chose to nominate two Catalans for the posts as an apparent gesture to the region which continues to be rocked by fallout from the independence push. Talks to form a government are now set to continue but all parties have said no announcements will be made before this Sunday’s elections.
European elections SPANISH voters are set to cast their ballots in EU elections on Sunday, with 54 seats out in the 751-seat European Parliament up for grabs. Almost 420 million Europeans are set to vote in the election. The last European Parliament election was held in 2014 when Spain’s conservative Partido Popular (PP) won the most seats with 16. Unlike countries such as Britain which are divided into constituencies for the EU election, Spanish members of the European Parliament (MEPs) represent the entire country. They are elected by proportional representation, meaning each party is allocated seats according to its share of the vote. Spain’s MEPs join European-wide groupings made up of similar parties from other countries once in the Parliament. The left-leaning Partido Socialista (PSOE) is part of the Progressive Alliance of Socialists and Democrats (S&D) and the PP is in the European People’s Party (EPP). The centrist Ciudadanos members sit with the Alliance of Liberals and Democrats for Europe (ALDE) while leftist Podemos MEPs sit with The European United Left (GUE/NGL). The European Parliament votes on budgets and other legislation and for holding the Commission to account. ACCORDING to information released by the European Border Agency Frontex, the number of illegal immigrants to arrive in the EU is down, except in Spain. The decline in April against March was 19 per cent overall, but for Spain the number doubled to 900 making a total for the year so far of 6,300 (more than 25 per cent of all illegal immigrants detected arriving in the EU).
In the past, both Greece and Italy have seen the largest number of arrivals, but they have both experienced significant declines although Greece still sees large numbers arriving at its borders. As is to be expected, because of its proximity to North Africa and its long coastline, the majority of those arriving in Spain come by sea and are generally from Morocco and Sub-Saharan Africa.

Mercedes boss sentenced THE General Manager of Mercedes-Benz in Spain has been sentenced to one year in jail after he was involved in an accident while racing against his son on a public road. Emilio Titos overtook another car at high speed and caused an accident which ‘endangered the life’ of another driver in
Herrera (Alva). His son, who was driving another sports car at the time was cleared as he was not involved in the accident. Titos has also been banned from driving for two years and ordered to pay €17,762 compensation to the insurance company of the other driver in the accident.

Each location will receive €15,000 in European Commission funding to install the networks in public p l a c e s. T h e E u ro p ea n Co mmis s io n h a s a n nounced the name of further 3,400 European municipalities which will now provide internet in plazas, parks, museums, libraries and health centres. The scheme, Wifi4EU, which has been running for several years, will see connections in between 6,000 and 8,000 parts of the EU between 2018 and 2020. According to a report from Brussels, 98 per cent of municipalities submitted the online request for the funding within one minute of the registration period opening. Spain, Italy and France were among the biggest winners in the lottery for the funding.
MADRID mayor Manuela Carmena is the highest paid council head in Spain, making more than €102,010 a year according to recently released figures. Territories Ministry data showed Barcelona mayor Ana Colau would be the second-highest paid in Spain at €100,000. But the official caps her pay at €30,800 to comply with her party’s ethics codes. Bilbao mayor Juan Mari Aburto also takes home more than Sanchez, making almost €91,320. Trying again By Joe Gerrard BRITAIN’S prime minister is set to redouble her efforts to pass her Brexit deal and said she will make a ‘bold’ offer to win over sceptical lawmakers. Theresa May plans to hold talks with government ministers in a bid to find a way through the Brexit impasse. The prime minister wrote in the British press: ‘I still believe there is a majority in parliament to be won for leaving with a deal. ‘When the Withdrawal Agreement Bill comes before MPs, it will represent a new, bold offer.’ Deadlock continues after the House of Commons rejected her Withdrawal Agreement three times. May plans to table her draft deal for a fourth and likely final vote next month. Changes to the deal itself are impossible unless the prime minister returns to Brussels which has repeatedly ruled out reopening talks. But May could attempt to get further changes to the Political declaration which sketches out Britain’s future relationship with the EU. She has also pledged to bolt guarantees on areas including workers’ rights and the environment onto her deal bill to

Airline posts new losses
Budget goes back to Cortes THE Spanish government’s draft budget for this year is set to go before lawmakers again following the general election called after it failed to pass. Acting Commerce Minister Reyes Maroto told a meeting of businesspeople in Bilbao budget plans would be put to the Cortes when the new government is sworn in. Coalition talks between the left-leaning Partido Socialista (PSOE), which won the most seats in the Congress of Deputies following the election, and opposition groups are ongoing. Maroto said: “I hope investments will be channelled from the new 2019 budget
By Joe Gerrard soon. It will be presented once the new government is set up and present in the Cortes.” The minister’s comments come after lawmakers rejected the governing PSOE’s budget in February. Pro-Catalan independence parties refused to support it over the region’s ongoing independence dispute. Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez then called a snap general election to shore up PSOE’s position in the Congress of Deputies. The party had 86 seats in the 350-member lower house.
Budget plans unveiled in January included €7.5 billion in infrastructure investment and a youth unemployment plan backed by €670 million. The government also budgeted €220 million to help tackle gender violence. It also made headlines for a proposal to raise the minimum wage by 21 per cent to €900 a month, the largest increase in Spain’s democratic history. The government planned to fund spending increases by tax hikes on large firms, particularly technology companies. Finance Minister Maria Jesus Montero said the budget would make the Treasury an extra €5.7 billion.
GERMAN-BASED airline TUI has posted an underlying annual loss of €300.6 million which it said was due to overcapacity in Spain and the grounding of some planes. The airline said it expected to take another profit hit if its 15 Boeing 737 MAX planes remain grounded. The company said it would clarify the situation by the end of this month. Excess supply in its operations in and out of Spain have also contributed to the losses which were higher than the €168.7 million posted last year.

Spanish firm takeover plan BRITAIN’S opposition Labour party said it would take the Spanish Iberdrola’s subsidiary Scottish Power into public ownership if it takes power. The party said the company and others made huge profits while raising bills for customers and holding back infrastructure investments. Rebecca Ling Bailey, Labour’s Shadow Energy Secretary, said: “Many people would be surprised to
know the cables that carry gas and electricity into their homes are owned by Wall Street investment banks, multinational conglomerates and sovereign funds.” Labour plans to compensate Scottish Power shareholders with Treasury bonds. Scottish Power made more than €1 billion in pre-tax profits last year. Labour said it would nationalise other firms.
Bankrupt families THE amount of Spanish families who declared bankruptcy for not making debt payments fell by 3.3 per cent in the first quarter of this year compared to the same period of 2018, National Institute for Statistics (INE) figures show.
Reform call THE CSIF trade union has called for a change in labour laws to bring worker representation to staff in small and medium-sized companies after finding that 4.3 million of Spain’s 17 million workers are employed in non-unionised firms.

LEAPY LEE SAYS IT OTHERS THINK IT THIS week I had decided to write something completely different. One of the banes of being a columnist is the never ending search for subject matter. As most of my offerings generally cover rather more serious, and consequently somewhat depressing subjects, I decided to look around for something a little lighter - hopefully to raise a smile or two. Well, in a sad reflection of the world we now live in, I’d have had more chance of finding something good to say about Diane Abbott! With the advent of ever increasing political correctness, even the wonderful British quality of being able to find some humour in its problems is slowly being eroded from our culture and way of life. Everywhere I looked it was doom and gloom. With the usual monotonous regularity, the UK’s entry for the Eurovision Song Contest came in last. When are people going to realise that we wouldn’t win it with Delilah, Hey Jude or even Little Arrows!? Europe hates us. And those who don’t hate us are jealous. Entering for this antiquated heap of pure elephant dung is a complete waste of time and effort. The usual affronts to our democracy and culture were also in full, unacceptable prominence this week. A highly respected GP faces a watchdog enquiry for asking a Muslim woman to raise

This time he managed to stick his oar in to one of our most treasured British institutions by ordering the removal of a new Wimbledon poster which depicted strawberries and cream! Don’t ask. I can
only assume it had something to do with food and Ramadan! Also climbing firmly aboard the idiot bandwagon this week came ‘ealth n’ safety. Apparently Leicester Council has banned Women’s Institute cakes from a local hospice. The WI ladies had been providing cakes to 2,500 annual patients of the hospice for 40 years, but now the local council have decided that factory products are ‘more hygienic.’ Ha! I know what I’d rather have. Still looking for something amusing? Forget it. The most disturbing action this week was the convergence of young Muslim men onto the peaceful members of Tommy Robinson’s election campaign in Oldham. Video evidence clearly shows a hoard of young Asian men, many totally masked and carrying weapons, being actually escorted by police to the Robinson rally on a local housing estate. There they proceeded to pelt Robinson and his team with bricks and missiles until the police finally broke it up. At no time were Robinsons people the aggressors, but the next day the meagre press reports merely stated ‘rioting broke out at a ‘far-right’ rally of Tommy Robinson on an Oldham estate’. Mojacar’s mayor talks on spectrum radio’s ‘Almeria today’ with her Tourism Councillor MOJACAR’S mayor, Rosmari Cano, along with her Tourism Councillor, Emmanuel Aguero, were recently interviewed on the ‘ A l m e r i a To d a y ’ s h o w, a regular morning slot on the town’s Spectrum Radio. The regular appearances on this popular station by members of the mayor ’s team aim to keep residents informed about the town and, on this occasion the interview focused on some of the latest developments. The interviewer was particularly interested to hear from them about any direct impact on Mojacar the newly formed Junta de Andalucia administration would have, as they are now of the same political party. Both reported that, thanks to this change within the Andalu-

The Plan also includes a designated bus station to improve the town’s communication systems. Wi t h r e g a r d t o s p o r t s , b o t h were keen to mention the recently opened installations such as the outdoor skate and workout parks, along with other future plans in this area for both the old town and the beach area.

THE naming of Baby Sussex (as he was previously known), caught some by surprise. But, as far as naming your own child is concerned, does anything go? Well, what you can legally call your child depends on where he or she was born. In France and Germany, for instance, there are several enforceable rules, basically to protect the child’s welfare and prevent ridicule. So, no infant ‘Nutella’ or ‘Fraise’ (strawberry) in France or ‘Pfefferminze’ (peppermint) or ‘Lord’ in Germany. In Iceland things are even stricter. Parents have to choose a name from a list of about 3,500 pre-approved Icelandic names. Catchy names like ‘Yngveldur’ and ‘Osvaldur.’ And while Chinese parents have to choose names that are computer-readable, Japanese parents must select from a list of commonly used kanji characters or names. The UK is thought to be one of the more easy-going countries where, unless it’s downright offensive or a number, practically anything goes. In 2017, reportedly there were infants ‘Diesel,’ ‘Fox,’ ‘Flourish’ and ‘Mars.’ Wow! As for Scottish names registered last

year, some of the daftest are ‘Awesome,’ ‘Adora-Belle’ and ‘Wiseman.’ Celebrity singers seem to have influenced girls’ names too. Amongst the top 100 were various spellings of ‘Ariana,’ a ‘Cardi,’ and even a ‘Cher.’ Some names even got political. One baby boy was named ‘Corbyn,’ another ‘Corbyn Blue,’ and yet another ‘Boris’ (bless!). Four girls share a first name with First Minister Nicola Sturgeon. But there was only one baby ‘Theresa’ (strange that!). There was no infant ‘Trump,’ but there were six called ‘Donald,’ 10 ‘Reagan,’ two ‘Clinton’ and 113 ‘Carter.’ Which reminds me: parents please bear in mind potential name combinations. I once came across one unfortunate infant
named ‘Orson’ whose surname was Cart. (Think about it!) And a ‘Justin’ with the surname Case. Plus a ‘Peter’ Enis (P Enis). Just what was his mother thinking? But some name combinations are simply unavoidable. There was a girl I went to school with named Alison Young. We called her Ali. She later married a guy called Mark Gator. Nuff said. LEGALLY SPEAKING Can they stop the frogs? Our apartment complex in Fuengirola is a beautiful place to live. There are two large communal pools. Between the pools, there is a pond. The problem is, from April until late July, as soon as the sun goes down, the bullfrogs in the pond start to croak and keep on until sunrise. They are so loud we cannot hear ourselves speak on our balcony. We can still hear them inside our apartment even with the windows shut. This is the same for all the residents near the pond. I have asked the president of the urbanisation but he simply says that the frogs are part of living in Spain and that they are a protected species. The frog noise is making our lives a misery. Is there anything we can do? You get the impression that all the politicians care about is their own backside and their own power. We are still in limbo land, without any real clue as to what is going to happen. We do not even know what the real projected effects will be of leaving the EU, half-leaving, remaining in etcetera etcetera. We have been lied to, treated like fools, and subjected to the most ridiculous scaremongering by both the politicians, in England and at the EU, and by the mainstream media in the UK. All I do know is that I would not trust our politicians to tie their own shoe laces, let alone ours. Where are the real leaders of the type that Britain apparently used to produce? As a ‘normal’ chap, all I can say is, ‘sort it out!’ Darren Price
A black legacy YOUR article about the so-called Spanish ‘black legend’ in last week’s paper (Issue 1767) intrigued me. I have often thought the stereotype of the typical Spaniard is unpleasant in films. When I want to watch something about Spain I go with something made by people from the country for this reason. What interested me was finding out that these stereotypes have a long history, the legacy of which lingers on. I think it’s important to understand the historical context and development of such things to learn about their present state and how we can move away from tarring everyone with the same brush. Leapy Lee could do with a history lesson along those lines to cure him of his obsession with negative stereotypes about immigrants, made all the more ironic because he is one. Stuart McPherson
Having a ball I READ your article about the Cannon and Ball show in last week’s Costa del Sol edition (Issue 1767) with interest and nostalgia. The Cannon and Ball show was a favourite of mine and a fixture in our home in the 1980s. I always found their social observance comedy hilarious, it was a real commentary on life and society at the time. They were great ambassadors for the north of England too. It’s great to hear the duo are still going strong and that they were able to entertain expatriates on the Costa. And it was lovely to see they managed to reunite with an old friend of theirs. Bored of Brexit DEAR Ed My God what a lot of whingers we are! We whinge about the roads, the dogs, the noise of the fiestas, the food, the local council, the internet, the weather, the Spanish drivers, the apparent lack of manners of our host nation, the list is endless. In fact, I have decided that many Brits just enjoy whingeing, to the extent I am convinced that if the 100-metre whinge were to be an Olympic sport then the British would win the gold medal, with little competition. FINDINGS this week which showed almost three quarters of legally registered foreigners cannot vote in Spain has rightly led to calls for change. Labour Ministry data showed about 27 per cent, or almost 1.3 million, of the roughly 4.7 million foreigners registered in Spain would be entitled to vote in elections this Sunday. Spanish voters are set to cast their ballots in local, regional and European elections. Legally registered foreigners who have told their council they intend to vote can cast ballots in local and EU elections. But foreigners and expatriates are not allowed to vote in regional or national elections. Being able to vote is a crucial part of the social contract in the community in which people live. The democratic compact which sees citizens elect politicians to speak on their behalf means politicians have an incentive to respond to their needs. Those same politicians, be they a local councillor, Congress deputy or Member of the European Parliament (MEP), take decisions that affect all our lives. Although many expatriates may not have decided to become fully-fledged Spanish citizens, we still form part of and contribute to the community around us. Many own businesses or work in those run by Spanish entrepreneurs. They pay taxes, use Spanish hospitals, send children to its schools and are protected by its police force. It follows therefore that expatriates and foreigners should have a say about how the institutions which affect them and their families are run.

The power of asking the right questions Joris Plu WE humans love to talk. Well, not all of us but many of us. Talking and asking questions, all the time, sometimes all day long. We have a word for it, it’s called communicating. Some people are very good at it and they inspire others who are listening. So saying something, asking questions, listening… all this is part of our human communication. Where is all this leading to you may ask yourself. Well, I would like to talk to you about asking ‘the right’ questions. We can discuss for days and weeks what talking is all about, even the question part. But for now let us stick to the
POSITIVE THINKING: Change the way your brain thinks. power of asking the right quest i o n s . A n d i n p a r t i c u l a r, t h a t enormous power of asking the right questions of ‘yourself.’ Why do I want to write about this? Because far too many people, including myself at times, are asking ourselves the wrong questions.
‘The quality of our lives is closely related to the quality of our questions’ - a quote from Michael Angier. Remember that every question we ask ourselves, our brain will always respond to it acc o r d i n g l y. L e t m e g i v e y o u some examples of questions we
should not ask ourselves from now on. Many things in our lives happen to us all the time, good and not so good, and we tend to ask questions like ‘What am I doing wrong this time?’ or ‘Why do those things always happen to me?’ or ‘Why can I not like myself for who I am?’ or even ‘What is wrong with me?’ Have a closer look over the next few days at the questions you are beating yourself up with. Most of them have a negative feeling about them. Your brain will always give you answers. Only if you ask questions in a much more positive way, will your brain give you more positive answers. So future questions could be like ‘I made a mistake, I am open for a positive change, what can I learn from it?’ or ‘Why do
I deserve all these wonderful things in my life?’ or ‘What is good about myself?’ or ‘What can I do to like myself much more?’ or ‘How can I make this day a great day?’ These questions are far more powerful put in a positive way and they will help your brain get used to this new positive way of thinking, which is always a good thing. I recently had to log on to the police website webpol.policia.es - by following a link they sent me and this is what came up ‘This website may be impersonating ‘webpol.polica.es’ to steal your personal or financial information You should close this page.’ This had to be a mistake surely but, of course, it wasn’t. Mrs S pointed out this was not the first time this had happened. Apparently a similar message had come up before when trying to log on to another official site. How on earth can this happen? How can the police and other official sites not be safe? Not only unsafe but so dodgy my browser on my iPhone wouldnit even open it? Is there anybody out there that can explain it to me? One of the problems is that I had to ignore the warning and open it because it is the only way to register rental clients’ information including all their passport details, names and dates of birth. Surely their sites should be the most secure of them
all? Who do you complain to and do they even care? It’s hard enough to follow all the crazy rules they seem to make up on a weekly basis without having to worry that the information you are giving them is totally unsecure but, hey ho, if they don’t care why should I? Settled down on Saturday night to watch Britain’s Got Talent. A couple of singers were OK, then a magician. He was very good. Then a bloke came on and decided to hang upside down on a pole after swallowing a sword and do something called a death drop. Just before he did this a message came up on screen saying ‘DO NOT TRY THIS AT HOME.’ Well thank goodness that came up as I was just trying to swallow the carving knife and tie my ankles to the chandelier but I saw that and thought oh that’s a shame I was looking forward to doing that. Seriously do they honestly think it’s necessary to put these messages up on screen? Do they think you are stupid enough to try a knife throwing act or set yourself on fire in a straight jacket in the comfort of your own lounge? And if you are that type of deranged maniac, putting a message on the screen is certainly not going to stop you!

Trumpeting Moors and Christians VERA Council has been trumpeting the programme of events lined up for next month’s Moors and Christians celebrations. of room for extra side dishes to sit in the centre of the table, and this week’s recipe is probably one of the simplest and is very tasty! Although we do have asparagus on the grow here,
you aren’t supposed to harvest it until year three, so in the meantime, frustratingly, as asparagus is currently in s e a s on a nd ve ry c he a p, I regularly pick it up when I go shopping. If you have something in the ove n, jus t ha ve this ready prepared and pop it in at about 200ºC for around 15 mins. I like it still firm and it does dry out quickly, so don’t leave it too long, especially if the asparagus spears are quite thin! Ingredients Five asparagus spears per person Se rra no ha m - one ha lf slice per bunch of asparagus spears Salt and black pepper Olive oil One clove of garlic Method Holding each spear of asparagus individually, bend it until the woody end snaps off. We have poultry for meat and eggs, goats for milk, rabbits and small pigs for meat and harvest our 70 olive trees each year for oil. We also grow a variety of fruits and vegetables. REALLY EASY: And they look lovely when presented. together. Drizzle or spray with olive oil, a few twists of black pepper and a sprinkle of salt. Finally grate a little garlic over them. When you are ready, bake for a round 15 mins a t 200ºC. Serve whilst warm. That’s it! Nothing fancy,
really easy and they look lovely when presented. Tip: Keep the woody ends which you have snapped off and freeze in a bag. Every time you use asparagus, for whatever you are making, add the woody ends to the bag.

Help, advice and activities THE Almanzora Group of Friends is a self-funding group of unpaid volunteers, unaffiliated to political or religious organisations, offering help, advice, activities and more for expatriates in the Almanzora Valley area. AGoF has a library and information centre in Albox’s Plaza San Antonio. The group lends and sells books, talking books, DVDs, jigsaw puzzles, magazines and periodicals. It hires out items such as wheelchairs, walking frames and crutches. It produces a free monthly magazine for members, and organises social events, day trips and mini-breaks. AGoF also operates a ‘help desk’ and has a list of translators to assist with medical or legal matters. It advises on mobile phone and tablet use, and provides access to computers and laptops with WiFi. The group has a children’s

Rewarding work VOLUNTEERING for the Animal Protection Society Albox is very rewarding work, says the association President Dianne Reid. APSA is a registered charity which rescues, rehabilitates and rehomes dogs and cats. Founded in 2003, it has helped over 1,000 dogs, homing locally and in other European countries. Supported by the local community, membership has risen 300 per cent over the last year, patrons receiving monthly newsletters. APSA relies on volunteers to help at the kennels, walk and foster the dogs. Funds are raised through its shop in Avenida Lepanto in Albox, its Los Llanos market stall and regular fundraising events. The charity holds a monthly raffle and earlier this month staged a fundraising fashion show. The annual APSA Summer Bash is on June 22, and one of the charity’s regular sponsored walks is planned for October. Dianne hopes more people

RBL Albox, active and social MANY readers will know about The Royal British Legion, but may not know there is an Albox branch. This is an active, social branch, with regular meetings and events. Members meet on the third Thursday of every month from 11am to 1pm at La Parrilla, with talks, presentations, quiz and raffle, membership enquiries and a chance to socialise. There’s a coffee/tapas morning on the first Thursday of every month from 11am to 12.30pm at various locations. The branch arranges numerous social and fundraising events, among them treasure hunts, dinner dances, BBQs and bazaars. The branch’s strength is in communication. According to the General Council of Notaries, sales rose to 50,249 transactions, representing a year-on-year increase of 1.4 per cent. Transactions carried out by foreign buyers represented 18.2 per cent of the total numbe r o f p u r c h a se s mad e in th e s ix month period. Of those, 44 per cent of transactions to foreigners involved non-residents. The purchase s a n d sa l e s o f th is g ro u p fe ll year-on-year (-4.9 per cent). However, sales to resident foreigners more than made up for this decline and accounted for 56 per cent of sales to nonSpaniards, a 6.9 per cent rise year-onyear.
It seems that the trend of growth in the purchase and sale of real estate by foreign res id en ts , w hic h s inc e 2014 ha d be e n growing at a rate above 10 per cent in general has started to slowdown. In the second half of 2018, the British was the biggest group of buyers (15.3 per cent), followed by foreigners from outside the EU (12.1 per cent), French (8.0 per cent), Germans (7.5 per cent) and Romanians (7.1 per cent). This represents a recovery in interest from Britons after steep falls following the Brexit vote. In the second half of 2016 sales to the UK sector dropped 23.6 per cent, and fell another 16.1 per cent in the first half of 2017. In total some 67.5 per cent of sales to foreigners went to EU (including British) citizens. From outside the region Morocco (6.8 per cent), China (4.6 per cent) and Russia (3.0 per cent) stood out.

MOTORING MOTORING FACT PORSCHE would appear to have decided you cannot have too much of a good thing and has launched another Cayenne Coupé variant to its lineup. The latest incarnation of the speedy cross-over SUV vehicle is now available to order and will arrive at German dealerships at the end of July. Called the Cayenne S Coupé it sits between the Cayenne Coupé and the Cayenne Turbo Coupé when it comes to power. The 2.9-litre V6 engine with twin turbocharging is at the heart of the latest model and develops 324 kW (440 PS). The maximum torque of 550 Nm guarantees powerful acceleration and goes from 0 to 100 km/h in 5.0 seconds in combination with the standard Sport Chrono Package. This figure drops to 4.9 seconds with the three optional lightweight sports packages. The top speed is 263 km/h. Prices for the Cayenne S Coupé start at €99,657 including VAT and countryspecific equipment. The Cayenne Coupé with 250 kW (340 PS) and the Cayenne Turbo Coupé with 404 kW (550 PS) will be available at dealerships from the end of May. The highlights of the Coupé include sharper proportions with a unique rear section, an adaptive rear spoiler, two different roof concepts and a rear seat bench with the characteristics of individual seats, with a sitting position that is
lowered by 30 millimetres compared with the Cayenne. The vehicle features a 2.16 m2 panoramic fixed glass roof as standard or optionally a contoured carbon roof with typical sports car look. The 2.9-litre twin turbo engine of the Cayenne S Coupé delivers its maximum torque of 550 Nm across a wide engine speed range between 1,800 and
5,500 rpm. Both exhaust turbochargers have been arranged in a central turbo layout inside the cylinder V. A roof line that drops significantly more steeply towards the rear also lends the Cayenne S Coupé a particularly dynamic appearance. This effect is supported by a fixed roof spoiler, which accentuates the distinctive Coupé silhouette. The front windscreen and A-pillar are shallower than in the Cayenne, courtesy of a roof edge that has been lowered by around 20 millimetres. Newly designed rear doors and wings broaden the shoulders of the vehicle by 18 millimetres, contributing to its overall muscular impression. In each Cayenne Coupé model, a fixed roof spoiler is combined with the new adaptive rear spoiler as part of Porsche Active Aerodynamics (PAA). The spoiler is harmoniously integrated into its silhouette.

Pollution plan call A MOTOR industry pressure group has called on more incentives to take older vehicles off the road in order to tackle pollution. The Spanish Association of Automobile and Truck Manufacturers (Anfac) says that replacing one million cars with an average age of 15 years with new vehicles would reduce nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions by at least 82.3 per cent. Particulate emissions would drop 84.7 per cent and there would be a fall of 29.1 per cent in carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions. Now Anfac says an incentive plan is needed to scrap older, more polluting cars and replace them with modern, more efficient vehicles.

By Dilip Kuner IN a hugely disappointing weekend for the Spanish motor racing legend, Fernando Alonso’s dream of an Indianapolis 500 victory was shattered when he failed to qualify by just 0.019mph. He was fourth fastest out of six drivers who were competing for the final three places on the grid via a four-lap speed test. He managed a 227.353mph average, which ultimately was not quite good enough with American Kyle Kaiser squeezing him out on the last run of
‘bump day.’ Earlier, Alonso had finished 31st in qualifying, with the top 30 making the grid. Alonso had left F1 - in which he was twice champion - with the declared intention of winning the Indianapolis 500 as part of his campaign to win the ‘triple crown.’ It is an unofficial title which involves winning three of motorsports’ most prestigious events, the Indianapolis 500, the 24 Hours of Le Mans and the Monaco Grand Prix. Only one driver in history has managed the feat - the UK’s Graham Hill. Alonso has two of the titles in the bag, with him claiming the Le Mans trophy alongside Toyota teammates, Kazuki Nakajima and Sébastien Buemi last year. His win at Monaco came in 2007. Speaking on social media after failing in Indianapolis he said: ‘A difficult week, no doubts,’ adding: ‘We tried our best, even today with a com-

This year McLaren decided to set up their own team rather than piggyback on the highly succesful Andretti organisation, but the result did not go their way. A series of problems in practice, including a high-speed crash, left Alonso and McLaren struggling to catch up in the weekend qualifying. The other two drivers to make it on to the grid on ‘bump day’ were Canadian James Hinchcliffe and American Sage Karam. The race, over 200 laps, is on Sunday at 7.30pm.
