British woman asks for €10m in compensation A BRITISH woman, 41, has reportedly initiated a legal battle in a bid to obtain €10.4 million in compensation after she became quadriplegic as a result of a wave pool accident at a hotel in Magaluf. The incident took place in 2017 when Bonnie Lackey, from Crawley, was on holiday celebrating her cousin’s hen party. The tragic accident allegedly happened when Bonnie, who was sat in a floatie, was tipped over by waves from the pool and fell face down into the water. €7.93m drugs bust BALEARICS customs officers have intercepted five tonnes of hashish worth €7.93 million, the largest seizure of the drug ever made in the islands. Patrol boats Paiño and Arao boarded a sailing yacht that had set sail from Morocco about 140 miles south of Mallorca. The three crewmen aboard tried to scuttle the rented boat by opening the seacocks when they saw the patrol vessels approaching. Customs Surveillance officials were prepared for rapid action and quickly boarded, arrested the crew and saved the yacht from sinking. They then pumped out the water and towed the boat to Ibiza, where the crew, boat and illicit cargo have been handed over to the courts.

Surprise package A 43-YEAR-OLD man was arrested in Palma when he tried to pick up a package containing 4,587 doses of medicine for erectile dysfunction. The Risk Analysis Unit (UAR) of the Guardia Civil and tax office had spotted a suspicious package at a parcel sorting and distribution office, so they simply waited for someone to pick it up. When he did so, they told him they needed to inspect the contents of the package and found the branded medicine, whose sale is strictly controlled in Spain. A sample will be sent to the Customs laboratory for analysis to see if they are genuine or fake, while the man is investigated for a crime against public health.
Robot enlisted Rent help HIGH tech is being brought in to help protect the Balearics’ environmentally important Posidonia sea meadows. From June 1 the help of an underwater robot that can descend 100m beneath the waves is being enlisted. Its task will be to find if there is Posidonia in a certain area, and inspect the meadows for signs of degradation as well as to check for endangered species. The annual operation is designed to warn boat skippers of the presence of the sea
meadows, which are important breeding grounds and habitats for all sorts of aquatic life. Last year inspectors made 50,000 actions - mostly warning yachters not to anchor in certain areas. Just 74 official files had to be opened against boaters who refused to obey warnings. There were 15 boats assigned to the operation full time, with more from the Guardia Civil and other agencies putting the total at 28.
PALMA Council has set aside €300,000 to help people struggling with their rent and it is now available to all registered residents. Previously the grants were only on offer to people under 35 years old, but now there is no age restriction, although under 35’s and over 65’s will be able to claim more - up to 50 per cent of their rent. Grants can be applied for between May 28 and June 28. The maximum annual amount payable is €4,200 for the younger and older groups, and €3,360 for everyone else. The requirements for applying for this grant are to be registered as living in Palma for at least six months, not own a home and that the rent does not exceed €900. There are also limits on income varying to how many people live in the property.

Work starts THE go-ahead has been given for the construction of 191 flats in the Nou Llevant district of Palma, with work to start immediately on the two projects which will cost a total of €24 million. About half the apartments were reserved before permission was granted.
Long hours WITHIN days of a new law obliging companies to register the number of hours their staff work, hotel employees in Mallorca have complained of fraud. Several have told their trade union management have obliged them to sign incorrect timings so as to avoid extra payments.
Sewer relief WORK on a 3.2 km pipeline to take rain and waste water from Palma’s sewers to the treatment plant at Coll d’en Rabassa has started. The €22.6 million scheme is intended to solve the problem of sewage contaminating beaches after heavy rainfall.

Museum marvel THIS picture of one of Spain’s most famous artefacts comes as the world marks International Museums Day on Saturday. The Dama de Elche (Lady of Elche) is currently held in Madrid’s National Archaeological Museum. It is believed to date from the 4th century BC and is thought to represent an ancient goddess. The sculpture takes its name from the town of Elche in Alicante Province, Valencia where it was discovered in 1897. Manuel Campello Esclapez found
the Dama de Elche on August 4, 1897. Campello Esclapez is said to have uncovered it while clearing land in the La Alcudia area for farming. It was initially acquired by the Louvre in Paris before being returned to Spain in 1941. It was moved to the National Archaeological Museum in 1971 and was loaned to Elche in 2006. The Dama de Elche is thought to have been painted in bright colours when it was originally made. Historians and archaeologists believe it was made by Punic-Iberians, a hybrid cul-
ture of pre-Roman Spanish natives and settlers from North Africa. The sculpture is thought to represent the Carthaginian goddess Tanit and the design also has Ancient Greek features. The artefact has become synonymous with ancient Spanish history. It featured on the one-peseta banknote in 1948. It has also inspired art including in French painter James Tissot’s Jephthah’s Daughter, produced shortly after the sculpture’s discovery. Tissot based other works on the Dama de Elche.

Ship drama TWO helicopters were scrambled and three Maritime Rescue boats launched to fight a fire aboard a merchant ship with 25 sailors on board. The Italian flagged Grande Europa was 15 miles off Cabrera when the blaze broke out yesterday morning. Balearic Islands rescue services were quickly on the scene and initially evacuated 14 crew members while the others remained to tackle the fire. At the time of going to press

the cause of the fire was unknown. In order to prevent possible toxic spills from the burned vessel, the Special Plan for Marine Water Pollution of the Balearic Islands (Cambal) was activated. The Grande Europa is owned by shipping company Grimaldi. It is the same company which owned the Sorrento ferry which was gutted by fire en route from Palma to Valencia in 2015 with 156 passengers and crew having to be rescued.

Rafa to wed sweetheart MALLORCA’S favourite son Rafa Nadal is about to tie the knot sooner than expected, according to Spanish TV. The news that the 17 times Grand Slam champion and native of Manacor was finally going to ‘do the decent thing’ and marry girlfriend of 14 years Xisco Perelló was first hinted at by Hola magazine in January. But details have been hard ‘in the autumn’ date, with Nadal and Perelló remaining tight lipped about the event. Now, according to the Socialité show on Telecinco, it has been revealed the wedding bells are set to ring in June at a private event. The ceremony will be held in an abbey ‘in the north of Mallorca’ chosen because it has enough room to accommodate 500 guests as well as offering privacy from the prying lenses

Homes for victims SIX houses have been handed over to help home victims of domestic abuse. The Balearic Institute of Housing (Ibavi) ceded four properties in Mal-
lorca and one in each of ibiza and Menorca to the Balearic Institute of Women (IBDona). Five will be used to house women who have been through a recovery

Thanks for saving my baby A YOUNG dad has personally thanked two police officers whose rapid action saved the life of his 11-day-old daughter who had stopped breathing. Every new parent’s nightmare came true when Kevin, an Ecuadorian, and his wife were heading for something to eat in Son Castelló (Palma) at around 11am on Saturday morning. They noticed something was wrong with Ashley, their new born daughter, who had gone very pale and still. Kevin spotted police cars parked up outside the National Police station in Gran Via Asim and ran for help. National Police officers Toni and Saúl were on duty at the door and, quickly realising the gravity of the situation, whisked the little girl to Son Espases hospital, blue lights flashing. Once there, hospital staff carried out resuscitation and revived the baby, with the speed with which she had got attention being critical to her recovery. It is thought she had choked on a little vomit. At the time of going to press Ashley remained in hospital for tests, but was making a good recovery. On Monday Kevin returned to the police station to offer his thanks to Toni and Saúl.

CAMPAIGN: Meningitis vaccinations will be given.
Get your jabs PARENTS of children born between 2001 and 2007 are being advised to have their youngsters vaccinated against meningitis, even if they have already had the jab. Normally the vaccination schedule includes one injection at four months, one at 12 months and one at 12 years. But a new vaccine has been
developed that offers greater protection not just against meningitis C, but also against groups A, C, W and Y, infections of which are on the increase in Spain. It is only the dose given at 12 years that has been modified and now health authorities on the Balearics want all children between the ages of 12 and 18 to
be injected with the new vaccine regardless of whether they were previously inoculated. The new vaccine has been ordered and supplies are due to start being delivered this autumn with the vaccination campaign planned to run through 2020 and 2021.
A MAN who repeatedly raped a teenage girl over the course of three years has accepted an eight-and-a-half jail sentence. Prosecutors had wanted a 14-year term to be imposed on the 46-year-old Ecuadorean man who abused the friend of his children from the ages of 13 to 16. Palma Court heard that the man took advantage of the fact that the girl had psychological problems and had trouble expressing emotions or even talking. The court heard that the man sometimes resorted to violence and threats to break the victim’s will, saying that if she told anyone about what had happened, he would harm her closest relatives or have her admitted to a psychiatric unit. The alleged assaults took place in his home and in vans in which he would drive her to secluded spots. As well as the jail term the man has been banned from approaching his victim for 15 years and been ordered to serve six years on probation on his release under a sex education programme. He will also have to pay his victim ₏15,000 compensation.

BUSY: Passenger arrivals are on the up at Palma airport.
Booming Palma PALMA Airport handled 5,550,973 passengers between January and April, up 12 per cent over the same period last year. In April alone 2,514,286 passengers (+14.8 per cent) went through the arrival and departure gates, with 480,514 of the 1,897,260 international passengers being British (up 10.8 per cent). By country, Germany remained by far the biggest market with 893,743 passengers in April, an increase of 26 per cent, followed by Spain,
with 616,895, (+6.7 per cent.) Palma Airport handled a total of 18,980 take offs and landings in April, 10.6 per cent more than in the same month of 2018. The big year-on-year rises in April can be attributed in part to the fact that Easter fell entirely in that month, whereas last year the holiday period spanned part of March too. But the overall figures for the first quarter, as reported by airport operator AENA, show a tourism boom starting in Mallorca.

Freddie Starr dies FREDDIE STARR, the British comedian, impressionist and singer, has died aged 76 at his home on the Costa del Sol according to his manager. Starr ’s manager confirmed the news on Facebook last T h u r s d a y. Coroners told Euro Weekly News on Friday that postmortem tests showed he had died of coronary heart disease. Starr had previously said he wanted to die in ‘the place I love.’ A British funeral director has offered to repatriate his body and hold a service for free after his family found themselves struggling to pay roughly €3,240 for a Spanish burial. PASSED AWAY: Starr, who had his heyday in the 1970s (inset) died aged 76 in Mijas. one of those who paid tribute to Starr on social media, said: “He was the funniest man I have ever seen.” Starr was born Frederick Leslie Fowell in Huyton in Lancashire. He performed with The Midnighters Merseybeat group before breaking into mainstream British popular culture with an appearance on the Opportunity Knocks talent show. Starr later became known
for his eccentric behaviour and was famously accused of eating a friend’s hamster in 1986. He later claimed in his 2001 autobiography Unwrapped that the story was false. The 1990s saw Starr front a number of TV shows including The Freddie Starr Show. The comedian was later dogged by allegations of sexual abuse. He was arrested in 2012 and 2014 before the
Crown Prosecution Service dropped the case Starr moved to the Costa del Sol after losing a defamation case against his accuser in 2015. “I thought ‘I’m not going to tell anyone, I’m just going to get on a plane and go to Spain, the place I love, and this is where I’m going to die’,” he later said. Starr leaves behind six children.
Fewer Blue Flag beaches ALTHOUGH Spain boasts more Blue Flag beaches than any other country, the 2019 figures show an overall reduction of 25, with a total of 566. In all, 50 beaches - the majority in Andalucia and the Canary Islands - have lost their Blue Flag status and only 25 new flags were awarded. This information was released by Association of Environmental and Consumer Education (ADEAC) which is responsible for checking all Spanish beaches and it was re-
vealed the majority of the losses were due to poor quality of bathing water, bad management of urban wastewater and in some cases inadequate control of Chiringuitos (beach bars). The most prolific number of beaches awarded Blue Flags are in the Autonomous Community of Valencia followed by Cataluña. There are 98 marinas and five piers also awarded this accolade, but overall the total number of Blue Flags is the lowest since 2014.
Mixed news on jobs EACH month, online recruitment agency Infojobs announces the number of job vacancies in Spain on its portal and compares it with the previous month. April saw a total of 235,397 jobs on offer, a reduction of 3 per cent over the previous month, but the fig-
ures vary tremendously from area to area and unemployment is down by 91,518. The reduction in jobs registered may be due to the holidays surrounding Holy Week, but readers of Euro Weekly News may be pleased to know that vacancies in all of the areas covered by our
six editions are up with Murcia seeing an increase of 26 per cent, closely followed by the Balearics with 25 per cent. An increasing number of jobs are full-time, although it is anticipated that fixed period positions will increase as the tourist season grows.

Claim: Gibraltar ‘illegally occupied’ SPAIN’S Foreign Ministry said Britain’s control of Gibraltar amounts to an ‘illegal occupation’ as representatives from Madrid presented their case on the enclave to the UN. Foreign Ministry officials said the British enclave was a colony within its own borders and said its ongoing ‘occupation’ raises issues in the modern era. This comes as Spanish envoys travelled to Grenada to make the country’s case on the territory to the UN. They argued Gibraltar was different to others on the UN list of non self-governing territories because the principle of

2002 referendum. The UN meeting was also attended by Gibraltar Employment Minister Joe Bossano. He

It comes as Spain recently got the EU to refer to Gibraltar as a colony in a document covering post-Brexit visa arrangements. A spokesperson for British Prime Minister Theresa May said at the time that the use of the term in relation to the enclave was ‘unacceptable.’ Spain has claimed Gibraltar since the enclave was seceded to Britain under the Treaty of Utrecht in 1713 following the War of the Spanish Succession.
Century’s 2nd-wettest April LAST April was the second wettest in Spain in the 21st
century and saw the fourthhighest rainfall on record, ac-
cording to data from the country’s meteorological
agency AEMET. AEMET figures showed an average of 96 litres of rain per square metre fell on Spain during April. That is 48 per cent higher than the 65litre average recorded between 1981 and 2010. The rainiest day was Friday April 19, when 99 litres per square metre fell on the area around Alicante-Elche Airport. Parts of the Valencia and Murcia regions saw more than three times their average amount of rainfall. Eastern provinces in Andalucia saw about double while Mallorca saw half the average amount.

Talks continue By Joe Gerrard SPAIN’S prime minister has completed a round of talks with other party leaders as he continues to seek a coalition deal following April’s general election. Pedro Sanchez has not yet said which party or parties he will work with going forward. He met with the leaders of the conservative Partido Popular (PP), the centrist Ciudadanos and the leftist Podemos last week. PP leader Pablo Casado’s turn came first. By election day on Sunday April 28, it appeared the relationship between the two was in disrepair, with each trading heavy rhetorical blows in the run up to the vote. Their meeting appeared to show a thawing of relations, with the two agreeing to open a direct line of communication on the ongoing Catalan inde-

Casado, who is still dealing with the fallout from the election which saw the PP score its worst result in its history, said his party would not back Sanchez’s reinvestment. Talks between Sanchez and Ciudadanos leader Albert Rivera came next. Rivera offered to support Sanchez if he chose to reinstate Article 155 in Cataluña, the constitutional mechanism
used to suspend its regional government and impose direct rule in 2017. The Ciudadanos leader said his party would be a firm but loyal opposition force. He previously ruled out working with the left-leaning Partido Socialista (PSOE) while Sanchez remains its leader. Sanchez then met with Podemos leader Pablo Iglesias. Their talks follow 10 months
of PSOE and Podemos co-operation in the Congress of Deputies since PSOE came to power last June. Sources from both parties said they had built trust and understanding between them in that time, possibly laying the foundations for a coalition deal. Iglesias told reporters after the meeting he and Sanchez had ‘agreed to agree.’ Both sides said the meeting was positive and the two had been able to find common ground on a number of issues. Party sources suggest there will not be further meetings between the two until after local, regional and EU elections on Sunday May 26. But the two have agreed to work together during the Congreso investiture vote which Sanchez needs to win to stay on as prime minister. It is due to take place on Tuesday.
Local forecast THE left-leaning Partido Socialista (PSOE) is on course to take control of several authorities in local and regional elections on Sunday May 26, new polling suggests. Spain’s Centre for Sociological Investigation (CIS) forecast PSOE would win in 10 of the 12 regions up for grabs, including in the conservative Partido Popular’s (PP) Murcia stronghold. PSOE is set to fall just short of an absolute majority, 16, in Sevilla City, winning between 13 and 15 council seats with 42.3 per cent of the vote. PSOE is also set to surge in Zaragoza City, becoming the second-largest party with between eight and nine councillors in a typically PP-safe city. New residency requirements LIVING in Spain can bring with it an array of issues which may not have been encountered when living in the UK. There are lots of things to consider, and we are here to help try to make the transition and life in Spain a little easier by compiling a series of helpful facts and figures relating to a variety of topics.
While there are new rules for British nationals applying for residency in Spain, there will be no change to the right and status of EU nationals living in the UK, nor UK nationals living in the EU, while the UK remains in the EU. As an EU citizen it is now mandatory to register as a resident if you intend on living in Spain for more than three months. You must register in person at the Oficina de Extranjeros (immigration office) - visit: http://www.seat.mpr.gob.es/portal/servicios/extranjeria/extranjeria_ddgg.html for regional offices - or a designated police station, which you can find at: https://www.policia.es/docu mentacion/oficinas/oficinas_extran.html You must make an appointment online before going to your local office or station, which can be done on the Spanish public administration website: https://sede.administracione spublicas.gob.es/icpplus/index.html When making your appointment you must select the province where you live and then the option ‘certificados UE’ and follow the instructions. You take the following documents with you to your appointment: Passport or other identity document (not expired) Official form (EX-18), two copies, filled and signed by the UE national. In addition, you will need other documents, depending on your situation: • (employed) - contract of employment or other proof of your employment status. • (self-employed) - proof of registration in the register of economic activities or other proof of your employment status. • (not employment in Spain) - Proof of: health cover valid in Spain; sufficient means to support yourself and your family. • (pensioners) - provide proof of public health cover. • (students) - proof of your registration in an educational establishment; proof of public or private health cover; formal declaration that you have sufficient means to support yourself during your stay. *You will be issued with a credit-card sized residence certificate which will include your name, address, nationality, NIE number, and date of registration. *The old A4 residence certificates are still valid, and you do not need to apply for a creditcard sized alternative unless your circumstances change, for example you move house. THE Bank of England kept the interest rate unchanged at 0.75% as expected, but the growth forecast was revised up to 1.5% this year, from 1.2% in February. Despite some good news on Brexit, with reports of cross-party talks yielding some agreement, it seems that the Monetary Policy Committee’s caution was not unfounded. Before the bank holiday, sterling touched a two-month high against the euro, but fell into retreat as the week went on and was an average of 0.2% lower on the week. The ecostats showed a mixed picture, but the dashed hopes of an end to the Brexit impasse appear to be the key influence on the pound yet again. The European Central Bank is also remaining cautious over the slow-down across Europe, but there was positive news as Italy’s economy expanded by 0.2% and the Eurozone beat expectations with 0.4% growth. The news came as something of a
surprise to the market and the euro made gains, strengthening 0.3% against the US dollar. The latest round of tariffs from the US suggest that talks intended to ease the tension may not be going too well. All this suggests the ECB may be wise to remain cautious; even though there was a pick-up reported in German factory orders and exports, the global picture remains uncertain and the euro could only make small gains. The US Federal Reserve held interest rates in the 2.25% - 2.5% range and the US dollar made gains against sterling and the euro in the wake of the decision. Positive economic data were largely overshadowed by the news of more tariffs on Chinese goods. The escalation should have been positive for the dollar, but the wider impact and implications meant the market may be taking a longer view, and after the announcement of the new tariffs, the greenback was an average of

However, reports showed overall, the Loonie lost ground for the third consecutive month in April. The Ivey purchasing managers’ index came in higher than expected at 55.9, but the balance of trade was a cause for concern, with the deficit
coming in at $3.21 billion which was wider than expected. Oil prices remained largely static and had no impact on the currency. The US-China trade war has been having a significant impact on the Australian dollar and news of the latest tariffs from America is an unwelcome development, particularly after the Aussie made gains after predictions that an agreement was in sight. The Reserve Bank of Australia kept its Cash Rate unchanged at 1.5%. The Reserve Bank of New Zealand cut the benchmark interest rate from 1.75% to 1.5%; the kiwi fell initially, but clawed back losses as investors recognised that the widely-expected move had already been priced in. Despite positive trade figures and an increase on 21% on exports and steady imports, business confidence remains shaky, perhaps anticipating the recent escalation of the USChina trade war.

Regions make taxation cuts THE Balearic Islands, Murcia and Valencia are among the seven regions which have offered new tax deductions ahead of this month’s local elections. The Balearic Islands has offered a deduction of 40 per cent on the cost of childcare, including those of nurseries and nannies. Murcia has offered a similar deduction of 20 per cent, with a maximum of €660 per child. The Valencia Generalitat has extended deductions for households which install renewable energy sources such as solar and wind power.

Santander in jobs talks SPANISH bank Santander is meeting with trade union representatives as it aims to avoid making redundancies during corporate restructuring which could affect more than 3,000 workers. The bank and the CCOO union are negotiating the company’s Employment Regulation File (ERE), plans firms have to put into place for staff if corporate decisions put jobs at risk. Santander sources said their restructuring came as it continues to integrate the technological infrastructure of Banco Popular into its business. PRIVATE EQUITY firm KKR now has a majority stake in Spanish fast food chain Telepizza after buying more than a quarter of its stock for almost €28 million. The firm and its partners made its stock offer through the Tasty Bidco entity, according to Spain’s National Securities and Markets Commission. KKR now controls about 56.3 per cent of Telepizza either directly or indirectly, up from the almost 28.6 per cent before the purchase. Some rival stockholders of Telepizza had previously refused to sell their stakes.

Fast growing Costa company THE owner of a Costa del Sol-based company which recently featured in a ranking of the fastest growing companies in Europe has spoken to Euro Weekly News about the business. Janus Nielsen, of the AnyTech 365 IT support firm, said it contracts with technology and appliance companies to offer help to customers experiencing technical problems with devices. His company re-
cently ranked 27th in the Financial Times’ Europe’s Fastest Growing Companies table. “We offer the first service for free and then we ask if the client wants to subscribe for a fee. About 30 per cent do so,” Neilsen said. “We employ about 360 people at the moment, but we are aiming to reach 500. We can offer clients services in their native language,” he added.
Bankrupt families THE amount of Spanish families who declared bankruptcy for not making debt payments fell by 3.3 per cent in the first quarter of this year compared to the same period of 2018, National Institute for Statistics (INE) figures show.
Reform call THE CSIF trade union has called for a change in labour laws to bring worker representation to staff in small and medium-sized companies after finding that 4.3 million of Spain’s 17 million workers are employed in non-unionised firms.

Times have changed LEAPY LEE SAYS IT OTHERS THINK IT NO blacks. No Irish and no dogs. This is the oft publicised ‘unacceptable face of racism,’ of the late 50’s and early 60’s, when landladies, letting out rooms in areas of London and other cities posted this on the doors and windows of their establishments. By today’s standards these signs do of course appear utterly disgusting and totally unacceptable. But times have changed drastically since those far more insular and uninformed times. Back then, these were not blanket judgements, simply because of someone’s skin colour or country of origin. They were decisions made because of the general reputation gained by those who were considered foreigners at that time. Many Irish were not welcomed by landladies because the vast majority worked the roads and building sites, and on weekends were renowned for arriving back at all hours and keeping all the other tenants awake by bellowing Irish ditties at the tops of their voices. People of colour had, in the main, only recently arrived from countries which were far less developed than the UK, with many having never even seen a toilet or experienced abodes with running water. Through no fault of their own, their general stan-
dards of living were vastly different to the locals. The landladies simply couldn’t cope with the culture differences. As for dogs, this was in no way a comparison. Merely that landladies didn’t want the barking to annoy the other tenants. We weren’t racists; we were merely treating those around us as we found them. I personally NEVER judged people by creed or colour. In those heady flower-power days, I truly did believe the UK was the forerunner of how the whole world would be one day; convinced that in the words of Blue Mink and Madeline Bell, (who I know still peruses this column) that all we did indeed require was a great big melting pot, turning out coffee coloured people by the score! For a time I lived in Bayswater’s All Saints Road. At the end of the road was a pub frequented mainly by the black neighbourhood community. I was often the only white face in the pub and thoroughly enjoyed the company and the Ska and reggae music while enveloped in the vaguely sweet aroma of ‘pot.’ No racism there either. Some years later I returned to reminisce in the area which held so many memories. The taxi driver wouldn’t even drive down the street! I walked to the packed, still wholly black clientele pub and after a few minutes made the decision to leave because of the uncomfortable silence which had descended over the whole establishment. I truly was utterly
SIGN: Found in establishments in the 1960s. shocked and disappointed. Believe me, we were never the racists. Generally we welcomed those from different societies. We never envisaged that our liberal attitude would in later years bring the threat of other religions and cultures trying to alter our whole way of life and democratic liberty. No wonder the UK is now infested with racist views.

A SCOTTISH airport’s about to introduce the first full-time therapy dogs in the UK travel industry to calm anxious passengers. There are already more than 50 animal therapy programmes in airports across America, including one, at San Francisco International, featuring Lu Liu the pig. Though not all airlines are sympathetic. Last year, a woman was refused permission to bring Dexter, her emotional-support peacock, on board a flight to Los Angeles. But it’s not just at airports that you come across ‘therapy’ pets. They’re now in the work place, schools and hospitals. An interesting idea, but doubtless there’ll be protests, demonstrations and angry letters to papers in the cause of ‘animal-slavery,’ certain religious objections (let’s not go down that avenue) and allergy - ‘if they bring cats in, I’ll scream and scream until I’m sick’ as someone about to go the full (‘Just William’) Violet Elizabeth Bott might put it. With the imminent approach of the 75th anniversary of D-Day, I often wonder how those who fought and survived the atrocities of the Second World War managed without

THERAPY DOGS: Are to be introduced in a Scottish airport. all these therapy ‘aids’ seemingly deemed ‘essential’ today. I can’t help asking myself whether the high levels of stress and mental illness experienced by millennials nowadays in any way coincide with living in such a riskaverse culture that they’re forbidden all
kinds of emotionally satisfying activities and experiences. Taking risks - like jumping into a pool or climbing a tree - plays a significant role in confidence building for kids. When they learn to swim or ride a bike - learning to feel what it’s like to master something - it has positive effects that spill over into other aspects of their life. Incidentally, a friend of mine has a large Rottweiler. Though she (the dog!) has a calm, placid temperament, she’s so threatening-looking, she’d have zero therapeutic effect on anxious passengers. Quite the opposite! My own little toy poodle would get so stressed she’d need her own therapy dog to recover... Whatever next? Transgender dogs? Would they, in turn, need therapy adults? Blame it all on Brexit - it’s gone to the dogs! LEGALLY SPEAKING Must he pay in cash? We have lived in our rented apartment for five years. We have paid our rent monthly by bank transfer and declared this to Hacienda when making our tax return, which gave us a refund. We now have a new owner who insists that the rent is paid in cash to the estate agent and also that we do not declare to the Spanish Tax Agency that we pay rent to him. We do declare the rent automatically through our accountant. I suffer from arthritis in both knees and find it difficult to walk the 1.5 km to the estate agency. Our question is: are we legally entitled to pay our rent by bank transfer? P M (Costa del Sol)
No, you cannot David Searl oblige your You and the Law landlord to accept only in Spain payment by bank transfer. He is within his rights to insist on cash payment. However, he has no right to ask you to break the law by not declaring the payment on your tax return. I suggest you tell the estate agency that, if they want payment in cash, that they come to you and collect the rent.

I WAS disgusted but not surprised to read about the group of 26 people who were arrested for allegedly scamming tourists on Palma beach. Wherever high levels of holidaymakers concentrate there always seem to be people who seek to take advantage of those letting their guard down while away from home. However, while I sympathise with those who have lost their money on these ‘games,’ I was a little shocked that adult tourists had been taken in by the group. It seems to prove the old adage true, ‘if it seems too good to be true, it is.’ Mr John Hedron
French air strikes HI Leapy, I have to compliment you on very detailed articles in the Euro Weekly News , we look forward to continue reading them online here in Ireland. Sometime, if you think it’s worth mentioning, you might mention the fallout of the effects of the continuing French air traffic controllers strike. On May 8, we were affected by this action for the second time, the large expense of rehiring a car, and for some, hotel fees etc. There was little mention of this in the news anywhere. Surely, as this ongoing dispute affects many countries in Europe, it should be an issue for the European Parliament to get involved, in the form of mediation, and indeed put pressure on both sides, to reach a settlement. I am going to write to the MEPs going up for election to see what they have to say about this issue. Keep up the great articles, and looking forward to reading them online. Danny Murphy
Points raised RE: An arrogant affront (Issue 1765). Might I say I have enjoyed reading your articles since I came to Spain and always seem to agree with what your views are. However this I feel has moved me to put something in writing. Both points mentioned are a disgrace. I cannot believe these things are happening and no one in England stands up and speaks. The Sri Lankan atrocity was far more devastating than New Zealand and as you say hardly mentioned. OUR VIEW More action needed THE news that Spanish emissions fell by a higher rate than the EU average last year is welcome, but action on climate change must be stepped up to avoid catastrophe. Emissions in Spain fell by 3.2 per cent last year, according to the Eurostat data agency. The EU average was 2.5 per cent, with both figures well below that of Portugal’s which dropped by 9 per cent. Climate change is the single-biggest existential threat to the survival of our species and to the natural world we depend on. The UN’s Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) has warned we have 11 years to drastically change climate policies to prevent irreversible damage. As leading naturalist David Attenborough said in a recent documentary, a failure to do so would mean the end of civilisation as we know it. Here in Spain we are likely to see more heat waves, droughts and desertification of once-arable farmland. Flash floods like the ones which struck Mallorca and the Costa Blanca this year and Malaga Province last year will also increase, and several of Spain’s native animals will disappear. The current left-leaning Partido Socialista (PSOE) government has promised a raft of measures to wean Spain off fossil fuels and achieve net-zero emissions by 2050, also the EU’s target. But progress must be accelerated and the fossil fuel industry should shoulder a heavy burden of the effort given it brought us to the brink of a climate cataclysm.

Dramatic rescue: Five girls found after going missing in southern Spain The Guardia Civil mountain rescue team are brilliant. I took a wrong turning on top of Mt Maroma a couple of weeks ago and ran out of food and energy and ended up trying to sleep through the night under bits of grass half way up the mountain. Yet Mountain Rescue found me and helped me back down at 3.30 in the morning. I felt like an idiot as I am an experienced walker, but it was a lesson for me and the rescue guys were superb, hats off to them. Angus

And I mean not just full but with that weird feeling of it being filled with cooked spaghetti? Lots and lots of it - so much of it that you cannot see things clear anymore. You feel like you are almost not able to make those decisions that are the right ones for you. Feeling blocked and blind. Well, no worries. This happens to everyone on this planet. Hope you feel ok now? And most of the time we can easily read what the spaghetti is trying to say to us. So we can follow the path we want or we need to follow in our special life. Most of the time it all works
outside your inner circle to help you read what it says. If you are in this stage of your life, your body, soul and mind need a fresh start. So give it to yourself. Give yourself that new fresh start where you will find out who you are at that particular moment in time and what you really want to do in your life. Take a look into a mirror and say to yourself: “Yes, I will give myself a fresh new start right now” … and give yourself a big positive smile. Take good care!

IRISH boyband superstars Ronan Keating and Brian McFadden rekindled their bromance by meeting up for the first time in years in Marbella. The Irish pals - who shot to fame in rival 90’s bands Boyzone and Westlife, looked delighted as they met up for drinks. TECH FOR THE TIMID pREMEMBER that classic Tony Hancock ‘Radio Ham’ sketch, where his new receiver suddenly picks up a distressed ‘Mayday’ call? ‘Mayday? What’s he on about, Mayday, that was weeks ago, it’s June.’ The saddest sight at a recent country fair was a tent of tenacious old codgers trying to interest the young in their amateur radio hobby. Teenagers couldn’t believe that anyone would take all that trouble to talk to someone on-air, when all you need now is a click of the mouse. Buy a simple internet radio and according to one sales blurb, 100,000 stations are at your fingertips. Though sadly it’s a bit like everybody’s favourite TV whinge these days: so many channels, so little to watch. But lurking amidst the many wallpaper stations which clutter the net there are still gems to be found. And what other medium lets us get on with vital everyday duties like stocktaking one-cent coins in the holiday fund jar, or microwave-drying the rain-soaked cat (don’t!), while still exercising our intellect with news from The Voice of

Now all you have to do is wave your hand in the general direction of the components and hope. It saves a lot of muscular expenditure of course, but means that you have to sit infuriatingly still if you want to keep listening to the same programme...’ These days we’re pretty blasé about our radio. We’re unlikely to see a repeat of the infamous episode of 1938, when Orson Welles sent hundreds of Americans rushing out into the streets in blind panic during his radio-theatre production of H G Wells’ War of the Worlds - stampeded by the fictitious news bulletin announcing the arrival of Martians in New Jersey. Television was supposed to kill radio. It didn’t. Phones were supposed to kill conversation. They haven’t. Now satellite and the internet are supposed to kill radio. Trust me, they won’t.

Make an inventory EXPERIENCED landlords have learned how important it is to take an inventory before a new tenant moves in. And it is just as important to do the same if you are the one renting the property. It is basically a move-in move-out checklist which details not just what is in the property, but also its condition. The document will be used to compare the state of the home once a tenant moves out to assess any damage that has been caused during the tenancy and help the landlord and tenant reach an agreement for any payments that should be made (in most likelihood in the form of a deduction made from a deposit before it is returned). The cost of repairing pre-existing damage, or damage which existed prior to moving in, should not be the responsibility of the new tenant. However, damage which occurred while the tenant lived in the property may need to be covered by the tenant. The inventory ensures that this process is handled smoothly and fairly. Move-in and move-out checklists are important. They protect both the landlord and the tenant by informing the landlord what, if anything, is newly damaged and in need of repair, and preventing the tenant from having to pay for pre-existing damage. If damage to the property occurs while the lessee is living at the property, they may be re-
sponsible for covering repair costs. Typically, once the lease has ended, the home has been carefully inspected, and the move-in move-out checklist has been completed, the landlord will provide the tenant with an itemised list of deductions (if any) from their initial security deposit. Without proof of damage from a move-in move-out checklist, a tenant may be able to dispute the deductions. For the tenant’s part it also means landlords cannot make unreasonable demands. A good idea for both landlord and tenant is to take before and after photos as proof to determine whether or not something was damaged during the rental period. Tenants should read over their contract carefully to find details on who pays for what when something breaks or becomes damaged at the property. Keep in mind that though a property should be returned to the landlord in the same general condition it was in when the renter initially moved in, the tenant is not typically responsible for “general wear and tear.� It is a good idea for tenants to give the property a deep clean when they move in. Not only will they have a sparkling home, but it is likely to show up hidden problems that may not have been noticed otherwise. If they do find examples of hidden damage, they should notify the landlord immediately.

Day I took a shine to cowboy boots Barry Duke WHEN I arrived in Dallas in the 1980s for a series of business meetings, the first thing I noticed about the executive who met me at the airport were his beautifully crafted black cowboy boots, which blended in perfectly with his expensive suit. ‘Wow,’ I exclaimed ‘I wish I could wear boots like yours, but I have trouble enough with conventional footwear, and I think those would crucify my feet.’ I explained that I suffered from bunions, and virtually all my shoes put painful pressure on my instep and I could only walk short distances before experiencing excruciating pain. ‘Well,’ the guy replied. ‘I had similar problems, but they vanished virtually overnight after I bought my first pair of boots. Why not try a pair?’ A day later he took me to a magnificent boot emporium

Made by top Spanish company, Sendra, I grabbed my bargain and immediately headed to a nearby leather retailer that specialises in the brand. I was curious to see how much they would have cost new. The cheapest pair they had was €295.00. But while I was admiring their range, I came across a pair that I w o u l d n ’t b e s e e n d e a d i n : a snakeskin creation with the snake’s head on each pointed toe. They had a €500.00 price tag! Far more tasteful, but considerably pricier, were boots made of
stingray skin. These come in at around €1,000.00, and should I ever be lucky enough to win the lottery, I’ll get myself a top-ofthe-range pair. Incidentally, the health benefits of cowboy books were spelled out in a 2018 American article which quoted an orthopaedic surgeon, Brady Rhodes, ‘who wears his boots as easily as Carrie Bradshaw wore her Christian Louboutins in Sex and the City.’ ‘I wear them all the time,’ says Rhodes, a specialist in foot and a n k l e s u rg e r y. T h e a r t i c l e s a i d surgeons like Rhodes advise their clients to wear cowboy boots because they give one a built-in heel lift, which reduces stress on the Achilles tendon. Rhodes also likes the soles of cowboy boots which have a rigid metal shank from end to end for solid support. So the next time you see someone wearing cowboy boots, don’t assume they’re being ostentatious or flamboyant - unless their b o o t s h a v e a r e p t i l e ’s h e a d a t tached.

Honda’s electric pledge HONDA has confirmed it will produce its first fully electric urban vehicle - the rather unimaginative sounding ‘Honda e.’ And it has also said that the next-generation Jazz will be available with a hybrid powertrain featuring the brand’s Intelligent Multi-Mode Drive (i-MMD) technology. The manufacturer says that this is part of its ‘Electric Vision’ to make 100 per cent of the brand’s European sales feature electrified powertrains by 2025. The Honda e, which was recently presented as a production prototype in Geneva, is Honda’s first model to benefit from a dedicated EV platform rather than be converted from a traditionally-powered design. This means it is optimised for electric power through its design and technology with no compromises. The compact electric car offers sporty rearwheel drive format and advanced electric powertrain. The Honda e has already
received over 22,000 expressions of interest across Europe, and customers can visit their national Honda website for more information. The i-MMD hybrid system that will be available with the next generation of the popular Jazz hatchback has already won widespread acclaim across Europe for delivering high-levels of realworld efficiency and refinement in the new CR-V Hybrid. Ahead of its 2025 electrification goal, Honda will expand the application of its i-MMD dualmotor hybrid system, with the introduction into smaller segment cars an important first step. The next-generation Jazz will make its international premiere at the Tokyo Motor Show later this year.

Some of the world’s most powerful and fastest cars cruise the roads of the capital of the UAE, but this gives the local traffic police a bit of a problem. If someone really wants to put their foot down in a McLaren, Ferrari or Lamborghini, how on earth are you going to catch them? Well they have decided that if you want to catch a su-
percar you must use - a supercar. So the latest addition to the Abu Dhabi police fleet is a 750bhp £2 million Lykan Hypersport. Best known for its role in Fast and Furious 7 (when it flew!) just seven of the superluxury cars have ever been built. With a 3.7-litre twin turbo flat six engine it is capable of 242mph, with a 0-62mph time of 2.8 seconds, so fast enough
to keep up with even the most spoiled Arab prince. The doors are rear-hinged and open upwards. The leather has gold thread stitched into it. The LED headlights have diamonds in them and the car has a more suitable paintjob as a police vehicle. W Motors - the Dubai-based manufacturers of the car - only had this to say: “Would you rather be chased or caught by the Special Forces Lykan Hyper Sport?”

The new S60 is priced from €44,534 (£37,935) and packages a 250 hp 2.0-litre fourcylinder power unit with signature Volvo styling cues to reveal a smart and sophisticated premium saloon. Built in the United States, the S60 is the
first new-model Volvo with no diesel engine option. My test model was the T5 RDesign Edition and it ably demonstrated it was the perfect premium, mile-munching saloon. With a top speed of 233 kph (145 mph) the T5 passes the benchmark 100 kph in just 6.3 seconds. Average fuel economy is 13.1 kpl (37 mpg) with emissions of 155 g/km. Driving the front wheels through an eight-speed automatic gearbox, with paddle shifts, a large Tesla style portrait touch screen offers most of the controls - including an array of connectivity options and settings including the different drive modes. The dynamic mode really sharpens up the S60’s responses without loss of ride comfort. The shortest of gaps in traffic offers safe overtaking and on twisting country roads the car’s tight handling capability is demonstrated to great effect. Nadal’s wait goes on WINNER: As good as it gets says Novak Djokovic. WHILE one tennis great continu e d h i s c o m e bac k , another has been left waiting the longest for his first title in a se a so n f o r 1 4 years. Novak Djokovic’s 6-3, 64, win against young Greek star Stefanos Tsitsipas in the Mutua Madrid Open final was made all the sweeter for the w o r l d n u m b e r o n e b y two statistics. Not only was it his 200th victory against a top 10 opponent (200 wins against 90
losses), it was also his 33rd ARP Masters 1000 title. This means he is now tied with Rafa Nadal at the top of the table of most wins at the elite level. But for the latter, his loss against Tsitsipas in the semi-final meant an unwelcome record continuing. Nadal - still world number two - is yet to win a trophy this season, the longest he has gone before winning in any season since 2004. And with the clay court
season - his strong point well under way he most certainly would have expected to have a title by now. He actually hasn’t been playing too badly with five semi-finals under his belt, but much more is expected of him from his legion of followers. Nadal himself is taking the drought phlegmatically. Celebrations turn to horror THE celebrations to mark Real Sociedad’s victory in the Copa de Reina (Queen’s Cup) turned to horror when club captain Sandra Ramajo had to be rushed to hospital following an epileptic fit. The Sociedad women’s team had the night before beaten Atletico Madrid 2-1 in Granada to claim their first Copa del Reina and on Sunday were showing their fans the trophy in their home stadium in San Sebastian. The team had already undertaken a tour of the city and were now thanking fans in the Anoeta Stadium. Ramajo was signing autographs when she went into seizures, with members of the public taking care of her until the club’s medical team arrived. She was then rushed to Donostia Hospital where she is recovering. The final itself broke records for a televised women’s football match in Spain. It had an average audience of 1.66 million and a peak of 2.2 million giving Telecinco a 14.4 per cent share of the viewing figures.

SPORT By Dilip Kuner WHILE FC Barcelona have long since been crowned champions of La Liga, there is still lots to play for in the final round of matches. The questions of who will qualify for next season’s Champions and Europa Leagues is still to be decided while the last relegation spot will probably be taken by Girona, unless there is an improbable combination of results. At the weekend fourth placed Getafe had to travel to Barcelona, where they suffered a 2-0 reverse. The home team were booed onto the pitch in response to their 4-0 loss to Liverpool last week, which denied them a Champions League final spot. Leonel Messi made the pass for Arturo Vidal’s opening goal with an 89th minute own goal from Mauro Arambarri completing the scoring. The result opened the way for Valencia to move into the final Champions League place, which they duly did with a 3-1 win at home to Alaves. If they win away to Valladolid at the weekend they will claim the coveted spot. Alaves gave Valencia a scare when they rook a 12th minute lead through Ximo Navarro, but goals from Carles Soler, Santi Mina and

Brahim Diaz scored his first goal for Real Madrid in just the sixth minute, but it turmed into another poor performance from the Madrid club. Mikel Merino equalised 20 minutes later, then Jesus Vallejo was sent off in the 39th minute to leave Real Madrid with 10 men. Igor Zubeldia headed Real Sociedad ahead in the 57th minute and 17-year-old Ander Barrenetxea wrapped it up with the third goal. Girona’s 2-1 loss to Levante has left them clinging on to survival by their fingertips. They must now win away to Alaves by at least five goals and hope Celta lose at home to Rayo Vallecano.
AT the end of qualifying Lewis Hamilton must have been wondering what had happened. His hungry young teammate Valtteri Botas - winner in Azerbaijan - had comprehensively outperformed him to take the Barcelona F1 pole position. And it wasn’t as if he had just been pipped either. Bottas had put in a superb performance to be more than half a sercond faster than the reigning champion, an absolute chasm in F1. But when the chips are down Hamilton knows how to perform.
