Safe and sound NATALIA SANCHEZ URIBE, who has been in the national press headlines for a week since she disappeared without trace in Paris, has been found alive and unharmed. The 22-year-old Mallorcan Erasmus student sparked an intensive search by French Police when she vanished while moving in to a friend’s flat for the final two weeks of her studies at the Sorbonne. There had been no trace of her since May 1 when she left two suitcases in her new apartment and went to retrieve her third from her old digs. Her family later alerted police who launched a search. Nothing came to light until Monday when her backpack containing her mobile phone was found in a park close to

streets in a disorientated condition although apparently otherwise healthy. She was taken to a medical centre for a

Losing their flags SIX Mallorcan beaches have lost their coveted blue flags this year. Cala Major, in Palma, Cala Agulla, Canyamel, Cala Mesquida, Cala Gran, in the municipality of Santanyí, and the Font de sa Cala, in Capdepera are the ones which have failed to meet the standards required for the quality mark. On the other hand, the island has recovered the flags previously lost at Palma Beach and in Cala Llombards and s’Amarador, in Santanyí.

Mallorca now has 29 blue flags, compared to 32 l a s t y e a r. T h e o t h e r 1 5 b l u e f l a g b e a c h e s i n t h e Balearic Islands, awarded by the European Foundation for Environmental Education, are located in Menorca and Eivissa. By communities, the Balearic Islands has the fifth highest number of blue flags after the Valencian Community (135), Galicia (107), Cataluña (97), Andalucia (79), and ahead of the Canary Islands with 43.

THREE people were seriously burned when flaming cocktails were being prepared in a Palma bar. One of the victims, a 33-year-old Swedish woman was flown by air ambulance to Vall d’Hebron hospital in Barcelona for specialist treatment, with burns to 18 per cent of her body. A Swedish man, aged 34, and a German man, aged 48, were treated in Son Espases for second and third degree burns. Investigating police say that rumbased cocktails were being prepared when they flared up causing a fire ball. The woman victim was wearing a silk dress which was ignited by the flames. Within minutes two ambulances, Local Police of Palma and National Police were on the scene at about 11.30pm on Friday night.

High flyer THIS picture of a black kite in flight over Cadiz Province comes as Spain and the world marks International Migratory Bird Day tomorrow (Friday). The black kite (Milvus migrans) is a bird of prey and is the most populous species in the Accipitridae family, numbering an estimated six million. They are also part of a group known as raptor birds. Black kites tend to form large flocks during their migration, particularly when crossing water. Black kites in Spain feed on waterfowl during the summer to feed their young. They have also been known to carry off the nests of other black kites for their eggs.

Jail demand PROSECUTORS are demanding a 14-year prison sentence for a 46year-old man who allegedly repeatedly raped a teenage friend of his children. Palma Court will hear evidence that the man took advantage of the fact that the girl, who was allegedly abused from the age of 14 to 16, had psychological problems and had trouble expressing emotions to pressurise her into sex. Prosecutors allege that the man sometimes resorted to violence

and threats to break the victim’s will, saying that if she told anyone a bout w ha t ha d ha ppe ne d, he would harm her closest relatives or have her admitted to a psychiatric unit. He had access to his victim as she was friends with his children. The alleged assaults took place in his home and in vans in which he would drive her to secluded spots. A trial is due to start shortly, with the defendant having been held in custody since April 2018.

The birds breed in Spain during the summer after migrating from their home in subSaharan Africa. Black kites can also be found in Oceania and South Asia and migrate to other parts of Europe, the Middle East a n d Russia. The birds do not have many predators due to their nature as a bird of prey and their size. H o w e v e r, the Eurasian Eagle Owl does target black kites, both while the birds are young and fully grown. Many of the birds die after being electrocuted because they tend to perch on power lines and they can also cause problems while flying near airports. Some are also hit and killed by cars while swooping to catch dead rats and other roadkill. Black kites are listed in the Least Concern category on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species.

Good Samaritans PA S S E R S - B Y c a m e t o t h e rescue of a 16-year-old girl in Palma when she was pounced on by a man in broad daylight. The 42-year-old man, a resident of the Ca l’Ardiaca reception centre for the homeless, allegedly threw himself at the girl and started touching her on Sunday. A woman who witnessed the events immediately called police and then with the help of other passersby managed to separate him

But far from calming down o n c e o ff i c e r s w e r e o n t h e scene, the man is alleged to have tried to grab the victim a second time and had to be subdued. Even once inside a police car the man is said to have continued kicking out. Due to his high state of agitation he was taken to Son Espases hospital before later being arrested.

Hunting tigers COUNCIL workers in Palma have been hunting out potential breeding grounds for the ferocious Tiger Mosquito that could potentially be a major nuisance in the city. In March and April more than 1,600 inspections were made with the campaign intensifying this month as warmer weather encourages the hatching of the pest which can cause a severe reaction to the people it bites. It is part of a €1.6 million pest control contract given to Lokimica, which also covers rat and cockroach control.

WITHIN just four days of the bathing season being officiall y o p e n t h e w a t e r s o ff C a n Pere Antoni and Ciutat Jardí beaches were closed to bathers after a sewage spill. The red flag was flown to warn people from entering the sea on Saturday after Friday’s rain caused an overflow from the local pumping station. The green flag was unfurled to give the go-ahead for bathing on Sunday after tests showed the sewage had dispersed and the water was safe once more. From August 7 until the end of last season, the beaches of Can Pere Antoni and Ciutat Jardí were closed to bathing on at least eight occasions due to faecal water discharges.

Blaze flared A UNIT on the Son Castello de Palma industrial estate caught fire when youths at a ‘botellon’ street party let off a nautical distress flare. Emergency services rushed to Calle Gremi Porgadors at 1.57am on Sunday with firemen able to extinguish the flames before extensive damage was caused. Eye witnesses were able to point police in the direction of a group of people aged between 20 and 30 in an area where two flares were apparently fired from. They have been summoned to give police a statement. Police warn that setting off powerful nautical flares on land is dangerous.

Jail demand A CLUB bouncer is facing two years in jail for allegedly assaulting four youngsters at a New Year’s Eve disco in Palma. The prosecutor is also asking a court to impose a fine of €2,700 on the man for the incident in which one person was held in a choke hold that left him faint and dizzy, before being taken to a terrace and being beaten. He suffered a fractured jaw and had to undergo surgery. Three other people suffered minor injuries in a series of assaults on the same night. The defendant has several previous convictions for assault, the court heard.

NEWS EXTRA Jobless down in Balearics THE jobless total in the Balearics fell by 18.32 per cent in April compared to the previous month and now stands at 44,730 people, with 25,659 of them being women compared to 19,071 men.

Dry April APRIL recorded 46 per cent less rainfall in the Balearic Islands than usual, with Mallorca receiving 22.7 l/m², (-49 per cent), Ibiza 22.9 l/m² (-25 per cent) and Menorca 27.4 l / m² (-36 per cent).

REFUGE: Crew locked themselves in ambulance.

Attacked medics TWO medics had to flee a home where they were attending an emergency call and lock themselves in their own ambulance while a man repeatedly hit the vehicle. The 061 health workers had been called to a flat in the Palma neighbourhood of Son Cladera when they

encountered a man in a highly agitated state. He started to threaten them and, fearing for their safety, they left the home and sought refuge in the ambulance. The attack only stopped when police arrived and arrested the alleged aggressor. The two medics have filed a complaint against the man.

Now the health authority has condemned the incident and points out that ambulance crew are officially considered ‘agents of authority’ so more severe penalties are likely in cases such as this. It believes the man could face a jail sentence of between one and three years.

Squatters move in DEVELOPERS didn’t have to wait long for families to move into their newly-built block of apartments. Unfortunately for them the entire building has been occupied by squatters rather than the buyers of the flats in Calle Emili Darder in Camp d’en Serralta (Palma). Four families with small children set up home in the four-floor building last weekend. Having heard the building had been occupied, the developer turned up on Monday morning accompanied by two National Police officers. According to the squatters he then flew into a rage which led to the police having to restrain him. The quantity surveyor of the new construction site said that on Friday last week he had given the apartments a last look over to make sure the final touches had all been done correctly and found no evidence that the house was inhabited. All paperwork had been completed and the flats had buyers - several of whom were purchasing their first flat - and all that was needed was to sign before a notary. The squatters claim that they had no other option because ‘we could not continue living in the homes of our parents with so many children.’

Sri Lankan bombers named POLICE in Sri Lanka have identified all nine people thought to be suicide bombers who killed 257 people on Easter Sunday. Officers claimed two of the terrorists were brothers from a wealthy family of spice importers from Colombo and confirmed the attackers’ assets would now be seized. Zahran Hashim has been named as the leader of a local jihadist group behind the bombings. He detonated his device alongside fellow Islamist Ilham Ahmed Mohamed Ibrahim at the luxury Shangri-La hotel. Ilham’s elder brother Ishaf Ahmed is suspected of bombing the Cinnamon Grand Ho-

tel nearby. A third hotel, the Kingsbury, was allegedly bombed by Mohamed Azzam Mubarak Mohamed. Police have since arrested his wife. According to police, a fifth man, Mohamed Nasser Mohamed Asad, bombed a Christian Zion church in Batticaloa. Another man, Abdul Latheef, failed to detonate his device at a luxury hotel, instead blowing up a guest house near Colombo. Shortly afterwards, Fathima Ilham, wife of the two brothers, detonated her suicide vest, killing her two children and three policemen.

Digital progress SPAIN has come 10th in a ranking of EU countries and

their progress towards digitisation, up from 12th last year. The European Commission’s Digital Economy and S o cie ty In d ex (D E SI) placed Spain ahead of Germany, France and Italy. It came behind Demark, S w ed en , F in lan d a nd Britain which were in first, second, third and seventh place respectively. The index score countries

The c ourt ha d to rul e according to Spanish law which does not oblige the

country to comply with its ‘moral commitments,’ the judge said. “The court concluded that Thyssen-Bornemisza is the lawful owner of the painting,” Judge Walter ruled. The j udge added Spain’s continued possession of the painting broke the Washington Principles on Nazi-Confiscated Art in 1998. Spain signed up to the international agreement along with 43 other countries. The court’s ruling followed claims lodged by the Cassirer family in the

Drug muggings A WOMAN has been arrested for allegedly drugging seven people before stealing their money in Leon. The suspect is accused of using a drug called burundanga to render her victims helpless before robbing them. The alleged crimes came to light after four victims attended the Hospital de Leon presenting similar symptoms of dry mouth,

Brit navy Spain deal concerns PRESERVING RIGHTS: UGT said reporters needed more professional protection.

Journalism protection call by Joe Gerrard A TRADE UNION representing Spanish journalists has called for professional secrecy rules to be brought in to help preserve the freedom of the press. UGT said professional secrecy for journalists would help strengthen Article 20 of Spain’s Constitution. It comes as the world marked International Press Freedom Day on Friday. Mariano Rivero, the UGT’s journalism spokesperson, said there

had been ‘very serious’ efforts to undermine press freedoms in Spain. He cited the seizing of mobile phones and documents from the offices of Europa Press, EFE and Diario de Mallorca on the island in December. Those news organisations were investigating alleged corruption in the Balearic Islands. Police officers probing the outlets said at the time that their search was undertaken because official documents had been leaked to the

press. Rivero and the union also said they were concerned about the industry’s gender pay gap and about the harassment of journalists online. Article 20 protects the right to free speech and the right for individuals and organisations to freely communicate accurate information. It also calls for workers to be protected by conscience clauses and professional secrecy rules to preserve those freedoms.

By Joe Gerrard A BRITISH trade union said a Spanish shipyard could be awarded an almost €1.2 billion contract to build supply vessels for the Royal Navy to pacify Madrid over Gibraltar. The GMB union said working class communities could be ‘sold down the river’ by the British government which they claimed was seeking to pacify Madrid during Brexit negotiations. Spanish state-

backed shipyard Navantia is one of four companies bidding for the Ministry of Defence contract to build three 40,000-ton Fleet Solid Support vessels for the Royal Fleet Auxiliary. The Scottish shipbuilder Babcock is the only British company bidding for the contract. Gary Smith, of GMB Scotland, said years of work would be created in British yards if Babcock is awarded the contract.

“Against the backdrop of a ruinous Brexit, the loss of the RFAs would be an absolute betrayal of the British shipbuilding sector by the Tory government,” Smith said. A Ministry of Defence spokesperson said they were required by law to put the contract out to international bidding. “The final decision regarding tenders for the winning bid will be made in 2020,” the spokesperson said.

SOCIAL MEDIA: Facebook bans individuals who promote violence and hate. FACEBOOK has banned Alex Jones and Louis Farrakhan from its site for violating hate policy. The social media giant said: “We’ve always banned individuals or organisations that promote or engage in violence and hate, regardless of ideology.” The pair, who the company claims hold views which violate its code of conduct, have also been banned from Instagram, while Mr Jones’ far-right

politics site, Infowars, was also removed. Facebook explained: “The process for evaluating potential violators is extensive and it is what led us to our decision to remove these accounts today.” Mr Jones took to Infowars to protest his innocence. He said: “They didn’t just ban me. They just defamed us. Why did Zuckerberg even do this?”

Mining boost COMPANY RCT has announced it has completed a major project to automate MATSA’s mines in Huelva. MATSA, which owns and operates three mines in Huelva, has been fitted out with a multiple machine

control which will be able to remotely control multiple machines at the same time. The company owns Aguas Teñidas, Magdalena and Sotiel. A MATSA spokesperson said: “This system not only allows us to

operate in hazardous conditions safely from the surface, but also increases productivity by permitting us to operate during shift change and smoke clearing. We also have the capability to simultaneously operate more than one piece of equipment with the same remote operator.”

Trafficking SPANISH police have brought down a people smuggling ring operating from this country. Officers said the ring charged those living in Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Pakistan and India up to €20,000 to secure them visas to Algeria before bringing them by boat to Spain. According to the National Police, the group housed people in properties near the Moroccan border. Police now believe they have identified those responsible and arrested 11 people.

Organ donation Living in Spain can bring with it an array of issues which may not have been encountered when living in the UK. There are lots of things to consider, and we are here to help try to make the transition and life in Spain a little easier by compiling a series of helpful facts and figures relating to a variety of topics. As of 2010, Spain has operated an ‘opt-out’ (or presumed consent) system for deceased organ donation. This addresses the rate or refusal of potential donors or their families in giving permission for the use of organs. The rate of family refusal in Spain is 13 per cent, compared to 37 per cent in England (according to the National Transplant Organisation figures - ONT). According to the ONT, Brits living in Spain are more likely to donate their organs than their countrymen back home. It’s not necessary to have a donor card. What is important is to let family members and loved ones know your wishes in terms of organ donation. Figures published by the Spanish ONT in 2017 put the country as world leader in donation and transplants, reaching a new record with 46.9 donors per million people and 5.261 transplants. Spain has been a global leader in organ donation and transplantation for the past 26 years. Broken down by organ, there were 3,269 kidney surgeries (up 9 per cent on 2016), 1,247 liver transplants (up 8 per cent), 304 heart procedures (8 per cent rise), 363 lung surgeries (up 18 per cent), 70 pancreas transplants (down 4 per cent) and eight bowel surgical procedures (up 100 per cent). According to the National Transplant Organisation (ONT), these surgeries are equivalent to six donors and 14 surgical procedures a day. In addition, Spain saw a new record in bone marrow donation last year, with 78,291 new donors and an increase of 196 per cent over the previous year. At this rate, the country could reach its target of 400,000 bone marrow donors well before the mid-2020 goal. In Spain the number of those on the waiting list was reduced to 4,896 in 2017, from 5,480, although the number of children waiting for organs increased to 74, from 48 a year earlier. Lung and heart are viable for 4-6 hours after death, liver and pancreas 24 hours, kidney 72 hours, corneas 14 days, bone and skin five years, and heart valves up to 10 years. Small intestines, veins, tendons and ligaments can also be donated. A single organ donor can save up to eight people and a single tissue donor may enhance the lives of up to 50 people. That is almost double that of the conservative Partido Popular (PP), which won 66 seats after support was sapped by the centrist Ciudadanos and the far-right Vox. Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez has invited the leaders of all of Spain’s parties for talks, except for Vox. PP leader Pablo Casado met with Sanchez on Monday and brought with him a wish list including pro-market economic reforms and measures to deal with the ongoing Catalan indepen-

He could return to his pre-election partners the leftist Podemos, whose leader Pablo Iglesias has already offered to join with PSOE. Iglesias said Podemos deputies would have to be given ministerial positions with PSOE, but Sanchez has ruled this out for the time being.

Between them the parties would have 165 deputies, meaning they would need other smaller groups to reach the 176 majority figure. The prime minister could also reach out to Ciudadanos which won 57 seats. That option is favoured by Spanish business and would give both a combined majority of 180, but there is little appetite for it among PSOE’s rank and file. Sanchez could choose to go it

alone, an option floated by senior PSOE figures including Organisational Secretary Jose Luis Abalos. But there would be no guarantee of a majority of deputies supporting his investiture vote, raising the prospect of an impasse. As Sanchez looks to build a workable government, Spain’s formerly pre-eminent right-wing party faces an existential crisis. The PP’s result was the worst in its history. It remains the largest right-wing party, but only by a slim margin of nine seats. Commentators have interpreted the party’s result as proof that Casado’s strategy of pivoting to the right to combat Vox was a tactical mistake. There are signs the party could try to return to the centre, with party sources suggesting nationalist rhetoric could be toned down ahead of the European elections this month.

Female representation WOMEN were one of the biggest winners of Spain’s snap general election as female deputies now make up almost half of the Congress of Deputies. There are 164 women to 184 men now sitting in the lower house of Spain’s Cortes following the vote on Sunday April 28. Women make up 46.8 per cent of congress members, the highest proportion in the country’s history. Spain now has the sixth-highest amount of female members of its parliament in the world and the second highest in Europe, according to figures from the Inter-Parliamentary Union. The proportion of women to men has increased eight-fold since a law passed in 2007 requiring political parties to ensure their candidate lists are roughly gender equal. There were 21 deputies in the lower house before the law came into force, about 6 per cent of the total. It comes as Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez has made gender equality a central plank in his progressive platform since he first took office in June. A total of 11 women are in his 17-strong Council of Ministers, the heads of each of Spain’s government departments. Cepsa issues bond offer MADRID-BASED oil company Cepsa offered investors bonds worth about half a billion euros in London on Monday. The firm has partnered with French bank BNP Paribas for the offer. Initial estimates reportedly show the offer could reach as high as €1 billion. Rating agencies S&P, Fitch and Moody’s have also given assessments of the bonds of BAA3 and BBB-respectively and said their outlook was stable. The offer comes as the sovereign fund of Abu Dhabi Mubaldala agreed to sell 40 per cent of its stake in Cepsa to The Carlyle Group.

Government plans tax hikes SPAIN’S government told EU officials it plans to raise taxes to boost government coffers ahead of plans to boost spending if parliamentary support can be found. The left-leaning Partido Socialista (PSOE) plans to raise taxes to bring revenue to 40.7 per cent of economic output (GDP) by 2022, up from 38.9 per cent currently. The hikes and other economic measures were outlined in the government’s Stabilisation Programme for 2019 to 2022 which was sent to Brussels last week. Government officials said it was part of plans to ensure Spain’s taxation system

LetterOne Dia takeover offer LUXEMBOURG-BASED investment company LetterOne has formally submitted its bid to acquire a controlling stake in Spanish supermarket Dia for 67 cents a share to the country’s market watchdog. LetterOne’s bid to take over the struggling Spanish supermarket is now set to be reviewed by the National Securities Market Commission. The news comes as Dia has to repay a €305 million loan by June. The company also needs €170 million to avert bankruptcy and its credit lines are set to be closed if no agreement is struck with banks by May 31.

Airbnb host income reminder HOLIDAY accommodation rental site Airbnb has sent a reminder to its Spanish hosts that they will need to declare income earned from using the platform. The company sent a letter to its Spanish hosts which included a summary of their earnings and advice on how to declare their income. This included information on which taxes they will be eligible to be charged for.

Airbnb also included information on how hosts can find tax advisors in their area. The company provided hosts with a phone number for the PwC accounting firm for those who want more information about how much tax they will have to pay. It comes as Airbnb has partnered with the Spanish Association of Tax Advisors (AEDAF) for the second year running to provide tax training for hosts.

Agency on coalitions RATINGS agency Moody’s has said a coalition government between the left-leaning Partido Socialista (PSOE) and the centrist Ciudadanos would be most likely to implement economic reform. The agency said a pact between the two parties could see reforms that it claimed would shore up the Spanish economy and the state pension system. PSOE may also be able to govern alone after winning 123 seats in the Congress of Deputies in the snap election. The party would also be in a position to reach out to Podemos and regional parties, Moody’s added. The rating firm said minority governments returned from elections from 2015 onwards had so far meant that structural economic reforms could not be undertaken. PSOE’s position in the Congreso opens the way to achieve a more stable government which could boost Spain’s credit rating, making it cheaper for the country to borrow, Moody’s added. The ratings agency said the economic fallout from the Catalan independence situation could be more easily contained due to the election results.

Don Quixote cheese ruling COMPANIES producing manchego cheese which features Don Quixote branding on packaging could be breaking trading rules if they are not covered by product origin rules, an EU court has said. The EU’s Court of Justice ruled companies that do not have accreditation from the Denomination of Origin Queso Manchego organisation could not feature images related to the fictional knight-errant. The court ruled imagery which evoked a certain region, such as Don Quixote and La Mancha, could lead consumers to mistake unofficial products for those protected by Denomination of Origin status. The ruling follows a complaint lodged by the Denomination of Origin after the Quequera Cuquerella company featured images of a famished man on a landscape of windmills and sheep. Fuel prices increase THE price of petrol increased by 1.73 per cent to almost €1.40 a litre during April while that of diesel rose by more than 1.2 per cent to almost €1.30 a litre, according to EU Oil Bulletin figures.

it to sell their goods. There can be no exceptions to using the imagery if a company is not accredited, even if the cheesemaker is based in La Mancha, the court said. The Supreme Court is now set to weigh the EU court’s decision in its ruling on the use of the branding. The case continues.

BARCELONA-BASED pharmaceutical company Grifols has bought a controlling stake in the American blood donation firm Interstate Blood Bank Inc for about €89.1 million, with the former now owning 51 per cent of the latter’s stock.

Share payout AMANCIO ORTEGA, the founder and largest shareholder of fashion company Inditex, has taken home €813.1 million in dividend payments and is expected to earn more than €1.6 billion from payouts this year, according to company figures.

LEAPY LEE SAYS IT OTHERS THINK IT WELL well. At least two rare examples of common sense took place last week. A judge overturned the ludicrous decision to award £3,000 to a father who sued a local football club for substituting his 10-year-old son during a game. The father considered the move ‘emotional abuse,’ and had originally reported the club to the local child protection service! To me it was the father’s decision to take this course of action which was the true child abuse. Apart from risking his son dying from embarrassment, he should also receive retribution for failing to equip the lad with some strength of character to face up to the real world. Having said all that, I looked more closely at the case and realised we hadn’t actually found a judge with a bit of common sense, but one who had reversed the decision, purely because the original notification had been sent to the wrong address. Ah well, we’ll all await the new hearing with much anticipation! The second ruling was far more serious and welcome. It concerned the OAP who was exonerated for protecting himself from a young thug who was burgling his house and had threatened both him and his elderly wife with a sharpened screwdriver. The terrified pensioner grabbed a kitchen knife, and in the ensuing melee, the masked intruder received an injury from which he subsequently died. Last week the judge

WELCOME DECISIONS: One ruling exonerated an elderly man defending his home. ruled the householder had ‘lawfully killed’ the man and he was completely exonerated from any charges. And quite right too. I have always considered that once an individual enters your home without permission, they forfeit all their human rights and

legal standing, and become fair game for whatever befalls them. However, in a sad reflection of today’s society, this toe-rag’s family has since issued death threats against the victims, leading to him and his wife having to leave their family home after 42 years and take on different identi-

ties in another part of the country. An unfortunate reminder of the type of lowlifes the UK is spawning in this day and age. I received a positive deluge of mail after last week’s column, in which I highlighted the Muslim company who, somewhat surreptitiously, allegedly announced their decision to build an enclave of London homes strictly for Muslim occupation. A feeling of shocked disbelief seemed to be the general consensus of opinion. It was of course perfectly true, and yet another example of the appeased minorities running slipshod over the beleaguered local citizens. I feel I must take issue with one correspondent however. The gentleman in question cited the fact that there had also been Christian building companies, and even some building accommodation specifically for woman. Yes good sir, I do take your point, but the UK is a Christian country (at the moment!) and the companies you mention weren’t building a segregated area, in a blatantly racist and highly provocative scheme to install a totaly different culture into the heart of one of our great British cities. Notre Dame DEAR Leapy Regarding the fire at Notre Dame and your column, I totally agree with you except that in this case you’re possibly wrong as it was probably caused by a workman with a cigarette. Even in the filming of the repairs after the fire, it can be seen on the BBC news that there was a workman with a cigarette hanging from his lips. What bugs me is that the Catholic church are so quick begging for money for the repair when the Catholic church / Vatican are one of the wealthiest organisations in the world. Take a hike I WAS of course relieved to hear that the group of five girls and a woman had been found safe and well after getting lost hiking in the national park in Nerja, Axarquia. I was amazed to read though that the woman had set off ‘for a few hours walk’ at 6pm. I would have thought there was an obvious risk that it wo u l d b e c o m e d ark an d might be difficult to find the way home in an unfamiliar area. AN open letter written by a group of migrants describing a Madrid detention centre as ‘worse than jail’ raises serious questions about the way arrivals in Spain are treated. One migrant who stayed there compared his experience of being in the Aluche Foreigner Internment Centre (CIE) to purgatory. He and others alleged the centre lacked adequate medical provisions and access to legal representation. Others said they saw assaults and ‘humiliating’ treatment while there. A report drawn up by lawyers in 2015 dubbed the site ‘Spain’s Guantanamo Bay’ in reference to the US prison camp of the same name. Regardless of whether there should be greater or lesser controls on immigration, we should not lose sight of the fact that migrants are human beings deserving of dignity. A society’s moral standing can often be seen in how it treats the most vulnerable. Migrants who have risked their lives to escape dire conditions in their home countries to seek a better life are some of the most vulnerable people in society. Although the motives of some should be checked and investigated, we live in a society where people are presumed innocent until proven guilty. Being held in a centre which occupies the site of a former jail for extended periods of time is effectively imprisonment without trial. If we were in their position we would expect a fair hearing and dignified treatment, not to be treated like convicts.

I made my statement in English, but we always hire an interpreter/translator for the AGM. Here’s lookin’ at you YouTube, Twitter and Facebook just for starters. All those millions (literally) of music videos posted by kind-hearted folks wanting to share the love? Illegal now unless approved by their actual copyright-holders. And there’s the rub. Some 300 hours of video are posted to YouTube every minute. Say half contain copyrighted material, ie

stuff which doesn’t actually belong to the person posting it. Exactly how is YouTube supposed to police this? With vast fleets of human checkers (impossible given the volume), or automated filters which suffer one slight difficulty: they don’t exist to that degree of sophistication, and probably can’t. But wait, it gets worse. Get your news from anywhere but

its actual originators (eg the BBC, Guardian, New York Times or the like) and it’s illegal if your third-party site of choice quotes the originating media without payment. Germany and Spain both discovered this to be A Seriously Bad Idea in their own local attempts to curb ‘news aggregators’ a while back. When Google News refused to pay for quoting their stories, German publishers ultimately caved as referral traffic to their sites dropped like a stone. A similar attempt in Spain saw Google shut down its News site entirely. It’s another fine mess, warn vocal opponents such as the man behind Wikipedia, Jimmy Wales, and the inventor of the internet, Sir Tim Berners-Lee: the new laws will be catastrophic, constraining use of the internet, encouraging a surveillance society but doing little in practical terms to actually help the ‘content creators.’ In the meantime, where did I put my eye-patch, peg-leg and shoulderparrot?

www.euroweeklynews.com SPAIN’S housing construction is starting to boom Licences to build new homes grew by 10.4 per cent in February with 9,168 permits granted, according to latest data from the Ministry of Development. This is the highest February figure since 2009, when 10,253 homes were approved and is well over double those authorised in the same month four years ago (4,200). The sector is now approaching the rate targeted by the government, which wants 150,000 new homes built a year. The number of homes built in 2018 was just over 100,000. However, despite the year-on-year increase, the

LAURA PENN ‘PENN TO PAPER’ I WAS chatting to one of my colleagues at Mallorca Sunshine Radio this week. She was born on Mallorca and has lived on the island all her life. I told her that she was lucky and she looked at me puzzled, head cocked to one side, and asked why. Now, how do you answer that? I could have started with the sunny weather and contrasted it with the constant grey damp which pervades the UK for nine months of the year. I might have alluded to the natural geographical beauty of the island; glorious beaches, majestic mountains and clandestine coves. Or perhaps the history and traditions of the people who bind families in close-knit supportive units who share fun, festivities and fiestas together. The real stuff of life. Instead I muttered something inane about the benefits of Hierbas and wandered off. It was just too big a question to tackle at the kettle in the studio kitchen. But it set me thinking. THE Partido Popular and Ciudadanos both want to lead the Opposition. Pablo Casado, who took the PP to its worstever defeat, reasons that his party with 66 seats in the Madrid parliament should lead the Opposition because it was the second most-voted party on April 28. Albert Rivera believes that honour should go Ciudadanos, demonstrating his unassailable belief in his and Cs’ worth, while overlooking simple arithmetic. In the past, when Spain was a runner-up in international football, the side were invariably described in the media as sub-campeones. Being a sub-campeon is almost like winning, which is why Casado and Rivera are bickering over second place while forgetting they lost.

Casado knows and now admits that he lost votes by trying to out-voice Vox and placate PP voters likely to be seduced by Vox’s antediluvian policies. This holds true with my Australian chums - and they have a very big island to explore. I suppose this is also true of us British expatriates who live on Mallorca. After all, we left an

island to come to this one. It is that casual familiarity with a place which fails to appreciate its charms to others. One of my Australian friends I met working on I’m a Celebrity Get Me Out of Here told me she longed to visit London. She wanted to see Buckingham Palace! My face must have been puzzled and my head cocked to one side as I asked her ‘Why?’ I have lived in London twice, so the appeal of cramped tube trains, dirty damp pavements and being ignored by charmless locals has rather faded for me, but to my chum the capital of England was the epitome of her travel desires. In January she sent me a photo of her standing on Pall Mall - wearing a very big coat. Back to my ponderings on the addictive qualities of Mallorca. When I first came to live on the island I became entranced by the many traditions and festivities. I love a good fiesta! These gatherings, steeped in historical tradition, are still some of my favourite things about the island. I

really enjoy being part of a community sharing in something they take as ‘normal.’ I have tried to explain that where I come from in Liverpool, people do not dress up as pirates and have a battle on the beach every year - well not officially anyway! But possibly it is the very simple things which really make life on the island so precious. As I write this I am sitting at a cafe (outside) with the sun setting behind the local buildings. I am not in an office. In a few minutes I am expecting two friends to join me and we will share a sundowner together and chat about this and that, as we often do. I will not be stuck in front of the TV on my own. It is these subtle yet gigantic life differences that make living on Mallorca my Kryptonite. Opposition position the Ciudadanos leader saw an opportunity to attract turned-off PP faithfuls. Both have tacitly admitted that they helped Pedro Sanchez to mop up the middle ground. The PSOE has always done best and won elections from the centre, as have other parties, so it will be interesting to watch the PP and Cs shuffle to the centre in a bid to pre-

vent a rout on May 26. But would that stop them getting into bed with VOX if the numbers miraculously add up on May 27?

laughing. Pablo Casado defeated the former vice-president and Mariano Rajoy’s righthand woman in the Partido Popular primaries last year and she has ostensibly left politics. But no-one doubts that had she led the PP on April 28, the results would have been entirely different.

Keeping schtum THE general election results put ‘it’s all over bar the shouting’ in a different light because the shouting starts now. The PSOE was the most-voted party, but with 123 parliamentary seats Pedro Sanchez is 53 short of an overall majority. He cannot survive an investiture debate without support from other parties, but PSOE hierarchs are already clamouring for a minority government. The logical solution is a repetition of the ill-fated PSOE-Ciudadanos alliance to form a government after the December 2015 elections as the two parties now have 180 seats between them. Albert Rivera ruled out a replay before the last election and so did jubilant PSOE militants outside the Calle Ferraz party headquarters on the night of April 28 with the repeated chant of ‘Con Rivera no!’ Pablo Iglesias, who scuppered Sanchez’s March 2016 investiture when he was riding high, is still going to charge a high price for his 42 seats and Sanchez will in any case need others.

NO REPLAY: PSOE and Ciudadanos Alliance was not very successful last time. So until after the municipal election results give a clear picture of who’s in, who’s out, who’s strong and who’s weak, Sanchez is keeping schtum. To use another well-worn phrase, Sanchez is boxing clever between now and May 26.
