Expat support website launches A BRITISH Consulate and University of Birmingham website seeking to help tackle the challenges of an ageing expatriate population has expanded coverage into Almeria. Support in Spain (www.sup portinspain.info), provides useful assistance for older and vulnerable British residents. It features information on how to get extra help on a wide range of matters, including health care, disabled services and benefits, as well as a directory of local support organisations. The initiative was launched last week at well-attended networking events in Turre and Arboleas, led by Neil Hesketh of the Support in Spain project and Javier Gonzalez, Consular Officer for the British Consulate Andalucia. The British Honorary Consul in Almeria, Alejandro Guerrero, also attended the Arboleas event. Over 60 representatives from charities and voluntary groups in the Costa Almeria
USEFUL TOOL: The website provides support for older and vulnerable British residents. and Almanzora areas which provide unstinting support for British and other foreign nationals took part in the meetings, among them the Royal British Legion, MACS Cancer Support, the Spanish Red Cross, and the Lions Club. The representatives expressed great interest in the
website. The meetings also provided an opportunity to meet with a Consulate representative and to get together with colleagues from other organisations. “It is exciting to see this website expanding into Almeria after a successful start on the Costa del Sol,” British
Consul Charmaine Arbouin said ahead of the launch. “There is some incredible work carried out by so many volunteers across southern Spain to support foreign residents who are in need. As the Consulate cannot be in all areas at once, I hope that this website is a useful support tool for voluntary groups in their work and for residents as well. “We have also compiled the site in Spanish, as well as English, so that social workers, medical staff and Spanishspeaking friends can, for the first time, access information on English-speaking support available.” Charmaine continued: “Our message from the British Consulate in Andalucia to UK residents is clear: plan ahead for the future. Anyone can become vulnerable at any time and it is better to be prepared.”

All in one place PROVIDING a source of essential information on locally available assistance and advice for older and more vulnerable UK citizens living in Spain, ‘all in one place’ is the key objective of the Support in Spain website. Neil Hesketh of the Support in Spain project told the Euro Weekly News how important it had been to also make the website as clear and simple to navigate as possible so that expatriates in Spain, their family members elsewhere in the world and Spanish professionals can easily search for information on the help available in residents’ own particular areas, ‘so they are all on the same page.’ Neil stressed too that the website is easy to use on mobile phones. The Support in Spain initiative is the result of a close co-operation between the British consulates in southern Spain and the University of Birmingham School of Social Policy. The original project set out to research the issues which older and more vulnerable British people face while living in Spain, and to suggest possible solutions to help prevent them becoming socially isolated in the future. One of the study’s conclusions was the need to develop a website which included all the contact information of the different voluntary groups and Spanish statutory authorities available locally, as well as helpful advice on common questions, such as how to secure extra social care, help for a disability or assistance with paperwork in Spanish. He pointed out the Spanish health and welfare system is still based on the assumption that family will take on much of the responsibility for looking after relatives, which can create difficult situations for British expatriates in Spain on their own. “We have to count on other organisations other-
wise we wouldn’t be able to assist: we just don’t have the resources,” he commented. The website content currently covers Malaga Province, the Costa del Sol and Almeria. Later this year the Canary Islands will be added as well as other parts of Andalucia. It has had over 25,000 visitors since it was launched. Aggrieved player accused of attacking ref A FOOTBALL referee in Roquetas de Mar has accused an 18-year-old player of attacking him after he handed out two yellow cards to the lad in a match. Guardia Civil are looking into the referee’s claims the youngster responded to the second yel-
low card with threats he was going to wait for him in the changing rooms. According to the referee, the youngster approached him in the changing rooms’ passageway after the final whistle and set upon him in front of a number of witnesses, causing injuries requiring
treatment at a medical centre. Almeria Guardia Civil reported that acts of aggression at lower level provincial football matches are not unheard of, attributing this to the fact that at amateur games the spectators are often members of the players’ families and friends.

Wanted man A RUSSIAN citizen wanted in his home country to serve a prison sentence for corrupting minors is under arrest after police identified him in an El Ejido hotel. The daily police check on travellers’ and hotel guests’ details revealed he was staying overnight in the establishment.

Prison swap THREE crew members of a yacht intercepted 60 nautical miles off the coast of Cabo de Gata coast in September with 2.5 tonnes of hashish on board have agreed to expulsion from Spain after serving half their four and a half year prison sentences.
Thief trap A BURGLAR is under arrest after a property owner caught him red-handed inside her Berja home and locked him in a bedroom. Guardia Civil suspect the 37-year-old Berja local broke into three homes in the area, officers recovering stolen items, including a TV and clothes.
Birth stats JUST over one in three births in Almeria in the third quarter of 2018 were to at least one non-Spanish parents, according to the Andalucia Institute of Statistics and Cart o g r a p h y. T h e r e w e r e 1 , 9 5 7 births in total in the province over the three-month period.

High flyer THIS picture of a black kite in flight over Cadiz Province comes as Spain and the world marks International Migratory Bird Day tomorrow (Friday). The black kite (Milvus migrans) is a bird of prey and is the most populous species in the Accipitridae family, numbering an estimated six million. They are also part of a group known as raptor birds. Black kites tend to form large flocks during their migration, particularly when crossing water. Black kites in Spain feed on waterfowl during the summer to feed their young. They have also been known to carry off the nests of other black kites for their eggs.

Crime gang swoop SIX members of a crime gang accused of at least 25 burglaries in Almeria and the lower Andarax region are under arrest as part of a joint Guardia Civil police operation. Law enforcement launched the investigation into a possible organised criminal group at the end of last year due to a series of similar break-ins into businesses in the early hours of the morning. In each case the robbers caused considerable damage. Guardia Civil reported the four

men and two women planned each robbery meticulously, the thieves going to great lengths to hide their identities and to not leave any fingerprints. The gang sold the stolen items as quickly as possible on the black market. Officers raided several properties as part of the operation, recovering a significant number of stolen goods and seizing equipment used to carry out the robberies.

The birds breed in Spain during the summer after migrating from their home in subSaharan Africa. Black kites can also be found in Oceania and South Asia and migrate to other parts of Europe, the Middle East a n d Russia. The birds do not have many predators due to their nature as a bird of prey and their size. H o w e v e r, the Eurasian Eagle Owl does target black kites, both while the birds are young and fully grown. Many of the birds die after being electrocuted because they tend to perch on power lines and they can also cause problems while flying near airports. Some are also hit and killed by cars while swooping to catch dead rats and other roadkill. Black kites are listed in the Least Concern category on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species.

Home grown plants GUARDIA CIVIL arrested a 23year-old after finding an indoor marihuana plantation in the Roquetas de Mar home he shares with his young daughter. The Guardia launched Operation Vitauro on the back of neighbours’ complaints about a strong smell of the drug emanating from the property and the continuous noise of air-conditioning units. Investigations pointed to the likelihood of an illicit plantation. A subsequent inspection of the property led to the discovery of

274 plants completely filling two rooms and an illegal connection to the electricity supply to get extra power to boost the plantation’s productivity. Officers came across his daughter in the master bedroom. The child has been placed in the care of social services and under the protection of the Juvenile Court. The 23-year-old identified as JFCC has been charged with a crime against public health and defrauding the power supply.

Fundraising race a winner THE latest Wacky Races Villaricos fundraiser was a winner all-round. The sun shone, the crowds came along, and there was plenty of fun for the fifth edition of the event, this year staged on Saturday April 27. The organisers reported they were heading for a possible new record total raised of over €1,300, and will shortly announce where the money will be distributed this year. Events got going with children’s games like egg and spoon and musical chairs, organised by the AMPA parents’ association. This was followed by a spectacular display of hip-hop dancing by the Garrucha dance school team ‘La Ultima Fusion’ led by Natalia Lopez. The racing began with the younger and then the older children. The annual teachers versus parents ended in a one-metre win for the parents, the opposite of last year.
VROOM VROOM!: Young racers in action. There were also dancing displays from ‘A Contratiempo’ flamenco school and Villaricos village’s own Peña Fantasia. Music was skilfully provided by Bill & Mason, a new DJ team following the sad death at the end of last year of Wacky Races stalwart DJ, Ian the Legend. There were volunteers to help from the UK and as far
away as Sweden, as well as locals who arranged track markings, road closures and equipment storage and helped to clear up afterwards. The organisers are delighted the efforts put in by the team and all those who supported the event made the Wacky Races such a memorable day for audience and participants alike. They also
issued thanks for the support from sponsors and those who donated raffle prizes. Winning numbers for the raffle are held at Bar La Plaza in Villaricos and prizes can be claimed there from Mark. Shining a new light GARRUCHA Council is replacing all the municipality’s street lighting with more energy efficient LED with a view to cutting electricity consumption in half. The move is thanks to a subsidy of just over €488,000 from the European Regional Development Fund, which covers 80 per cent of the total €610,000 cost. Garrucha mayor Maria Lopez Cervantes said the funding would mean ‘improving energy efficiency in the municipality, reducing CO2 emissions into the atmosphere, which benefits the environment, at the same time as modernising public lighting and reducing the electricity invoice.’ The local authority will replace the 671 existing lights and install an additional 39 new lights for points where there is currently insufficient illumination.
Addiction runners SPORT and solidarity come together on Sunday in Nijar with the La Moruna run to raise money for the Nuevo Rumbo association devoted to helping people with addiction problems. Organised in collaboration with Nijar Council and local businesses, runners will set off from San Jose at 10am, following a 12-kilometre route along the Cabo de Gata Natural Park coastline to the finishing line in La Isleta del Moro.
Caught red-handed POLICE caught a thief redhanded as he was forcing open a lock on the door of a property in El Ejido. They came across the 42-year-old Romanian manipulating the lock with a bag at his side, in which officers found tools and other stolen items.

Giant geode summer opening likely P ULPI ’ S g i a n t g e o d e a n d th e R ica mine housing the natural phenomenon could be opened up as a tourist attraction as soon as July. Measures to ensure the site is safe and prepared are expected to be completed at the end of June, according to works manager, mining engineer Jose Angel Solanilla. Around 300 local residents took advantage of a chance to see inside the mine last week on Pulpi Council-organised visits. Mayor Juan Pedro Garcia said the local authority was keen to highlight the importance of the more than 350 metres of galleries making up the mine and the site’s enormous natural heritage value. Visit o r s we r e a b l e to g o in to th e main gallery, where traces of minerals like iron and lead extracted from the mine up until the 1960’s are still visible. There are also smaller geodes in parts of the mine. The eight-foot long, two-metre high geode was discovered in 1999 by the Madrid Mineralogist Group.

The council will plant carob trees in the Calvario park on June 1, and asks local parents of any child born last year who would like to see their son or daughter’s names on one of the plaques to register at the Teatro Villa by May 27.

BILLIONS SPENT: The 16th highest on military of any country in the world.
Defence spending by Joe Gerrard SPAIN spent the 16th largest amount on defence of any country in the world last year at almost €16.4 billion, according to new research from a think tank. The Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI) found Spain’s defence spending fell by 5.2 per cent between 2008 and 2018. Spain bucked a global rise, with global defence spending now 76 per cent
higher than it was in 1998. Jordi Calvo, of the Spainbased Delas Centre for Peace Studies, said global figures showed that a Cold War-style arms race was developing. Global military spending stood at more than €1.6 trillion in 2018, equivalent to 2.1 per cent of the world’s economic output (GDP) or more than €214 per person. The five countries with the largest military budgets in 2018 were the US, China, Saudi Arabia, India and
France. Their spending accounted for about 60 per cent of the global total. Calvo said the Spanish state’s spending on military equipment was helping to prop up a military industrial complex, or mutual link between the government and the arms industry. Spain’s dealings with Saudi Arabia in particular were fuelling violence in the ongoing Yemen Civil War which the UN said had spawned the world’s worst humanitarian crisis.

Drug muggings A WOMAN has been arrested for allegedly drugging seven people before stealing their money in Leon. The suspect is accused of using a drug called burundanga to render her victims helpless before robbing them. The alleged crimes came to light after four victims attended the Hospital de Leon presenting similar symp-
toms of dry mouth, difficulty coordinating movements and speech, and loss of control. Following further investigations, police found the four had all seen the woman shortly before feeling ill. In addition, all reported having lost money during that period, with one person claiming the woman stole €1,400.

Radioactive waste monitoring THE EU is set to examine Spain’s monitoring of some 140,000 tons of nuclear waste stored in the Atlantic Trench. Madrid has not said whether it carried out inspections since 2005. Scot dies on Costa del Sol resort A MAN from Banff reportedly passed away after haven fallen ill whilst on holiday in Torremolinos. Steven West, 45, has been described as a “brilliant guy” and will be a “big miss.” According to Scottish press, the man and his wife flew to the Costa del Sol last Sunday. A Foreign Office spokesman is said to be helping the family following his passing.

The GMB union said working class communities could be ‘sold down the river’ by the British government which they claimed was seeking to pacify Madrid during Brexit negotia-

Fleet Auxiliary. The Scottish shipbuilder Babcock is the only British company bidding for the contract. Gary Smith, of GMB Scotland, said years of work would be created in British
yards if Babcock is awarded the contract. “Against the backdrop of a ruinous Brexit, the loss of the RFAs would be an absolute betrayal of the British shipbuilding sector by the Tory government,” Smith said. A Ministry of Defence spokesperson said they were required by law to put the contract out to international bidding. “The final decision regarding tenders for the winning bid will be made in 2020,” the spokesperson said.

Asylum requests Spain on VENEZUELANS placed the highest number of applications for asylum in Spain in the first two months of this ye a r, a c cording to the latest government figures. Interior Ministry data showed 5,969 Venezuelans a pplie d for a s ylum in Spain in January and February. Colombians placed the s e c ond mos t w ith 2,898 and Nicaraguans the third highest with 938. Venezuelans were also the group that grew by the most of any non-Spanish nationality last year.
Their numbers increased at a rate of almost 39 per cent, according to the National Institute of Statistics (INE). The f i gur es com e as Venezuela remains in the grip of political and social crises which have seen food shortages, rising unemployment and a spike in inflation. Jordan refugee situation
SPAIN’S Foreign Minister has said Madrid remains committed to working with Jordan on taking in refugees from Syria. Josep Borrell, who visited the Middle Eastern country last week, met with his counterpart Ayman Safadi to discuss the refugee situation. It comes as both ministers signed an agreement in Madrid last July covering the resettlement of refugees taken in by Jordan. Spain has resettled a total of 389 Syrian refugees who arrived in Jordan after fleeing the country’s civil war. Jordan has the highest number of registered refugees per capita of any country in the world. There are currently 1.2 million there, including Syrians and Palestinians.

This addresses the rate or refusal of potential donors or their families in giving permission for the use of organs. The rate of family refusal in Spain is 13 per cent, compared to 37 per cent in England (according to the National Transplant Organisation figures - ONT). According to the ONT, Brits living in Spain are more likely to donate their organs than their countrymen back home. It’s not necessary to have a donor card. What is important is to let family members and loved ones know your wishes in terms of organ donation. Figures published by the Spanish ONT in 2017 put the country as world leader in donation and transplants, reaching a new record with 46.9 donors per million people and 5.261 transplants. Spain has been a global leader in organ donation and transplantation for the past 26 years. Broken down by organ, there were 3,269 kidney surgeries (up 9 per cent on 2016), 1,247 liver transplants (up 8 per cent), 304 heart procedures (8 per cent rise), 363 lung surgeries (up 18 per cent), 70 pancreas transplants (down 4 per cent) and eight bowel surgical procedures (up 100 per cent). According to the National Transplant Organisation (ONT), these surgeries are equivalent to six donors and 14 surgical procedures a day. In addition, Spain saw a new record in bone marrow donation last year, with 78,291 new donors and an increase of 196 per cent over the previous year. At this rate, the country could reach its target of 400,000 bone marrow donors well before the mid-2020 goal. In Spain the number of those on the waiting list was reduced to 4,896 in 2017, from 5,480, although the number of children waiting for organs increased to 74, from 48 a year earlier. Lung and heart are viable for 4-6 hours after death, liver and pancreas 24 hours, kidney 72 hours, corneas 14 days, bone and skin five years, and heart valves up to 10 years. Small intestines, veins, tendons and ligaments can also be donated. A single organ donor can save up to eight people and a single tissue donor may enhance the lives of up to 50 people. After the vote By Joe Gerrard TALKS to build a coalition government have begun after Spanish voters gave no single party an absolute majority in the snap general election. The left-leaning Partido Socialista (PSOE) is in prime position to form a coalition after it won 123 seats. That is almost double that of the conservative Partido Popular (PP), which won 66 seats after support was sapped by the centrist Ciudadanos and the far-right Vox. Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez has invited the leaders of all of Spain’s parties for talks, except for Vox. PP leader Pablo Casado met with Sanchez on Monday and brought with him a wish list including pro-market economic reforms and measures to deal with the ongoing Catalan indepen-
WRANGLING: Talks to form a Congress majority have begun. dence situation. But a wide ideological chasm divides the two, making a pact unlikely. That leaves Sanchez with three options. He could return to his pre-election partners the leftist Podemos, whose leader Pablo Iglesias has already offered to join with PSOE. Iglesias said Podemos deputies would have to be given ministerial positions with PSOE, but Sanchez has ruled this out for the time being.
Between them the parties would have 165 deputies, meaning they would need other smaller groups to reach the 176 majority figure. The prime minister could also reach out to Ciudadanos which won 57 seats. That option is favoured by Spanish business and would give both a combined majority of 180, but there is little appetite for it among PSOE’s rank and file. Sanchez could choose to go it
alone, an option floated by senior PSOE figures including Organisational Secretary Jose Luis Abalos. But there would be no guarantee of a majority of deputies supporting his investiture vote, raising the prospect of an impasse. As Sanchez looks to build a workable government, Spain’s formerly pre-eminent right-wing party faces an existential crisis. The PP’s result was the worst in its history. It remains the largest right-wing party, but only by a slim margin of nine seats. Commentators have interpreted the party’s result as proof that Casado’s strategy of pivoting to the right to combat Vox was a tactical mistake. There are signs the party could try to return to the centre, with party sources suggesting nationalist rhetoric could be toned down ahead of the European elections this month.
Female representation WOMEN were one of the biggest winners of Spain’s snap general election as female deputies now make up almost half of the Congress of Deputies. There are 164 women to 184 men now sitting in the lower house of Spain’s Cortes following the vote on Sunday April 28. Women make up 46.8 per cent of congress members, the highest proportion in the country’s history. Spain now has the sixth-highest amount of female members of its parliament in the world and the second highest in Europe, according to figures from the Inter-Parliamentary Union. The proportion of women to men has increased eight-fold since a law passed in 2007 requiring political parties to ensure their candidate lists are roughly gender equal. There were 21 deputies in the lower house before the law came into force, about 6 per cent of the total. It comes as Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez has made gender equality a central plank in his progressive platform since he first took office in June. A total of 11 women are in his 17-strong Council of Ministers, the heads of each of Spain’s government departments. BREXIT BRIEF Taking stock of vote BRITAIN continues to face the prospect of holding European elections this month and political parties have entered campaign mode following local polls last week. The ruling Conservatives and the opposition Labour have been taking stock of disappointing results at the local elections. The vote was largely seen as an indication of the public’s attitude towards Brexit and politicians’ handling of it. As Labour and the Conservatives in particular nursed their wounds, the pro-European Liberal Democrats saw a resurgence which indicated their outspoken remain stance has electoral traction. Spoiled ballots at the local election with ‘Brexit’ written on them also showed Nigel Farage’s new pro-leave party could win several seats if the EU poll goes ahead. The collapse of support for UKIP, which hung on to 31 of its 176 councillors, also shows The Brexit Party could become the leading voice for leave supporters. Farage’s party and the pro-Remain Change UK did not field candidates. The upsurge in support for the Liberal Democrats shows the latter could benefit from ongoing clamour to remain in the EU or at least hold a second referendum.

Deal appeal By Joe Gerrard BRITAIN’S prime minister has called on the leader of the Labour opposition to join her in reaching a deal as both sides remain sceptical that consensus can be reached. Theresa May spoke following last Thursday’s local election which saw both parties and the ruling Conservatives in particular, haemorrhage votes. May and other Conservative top brass interpreted her party’s loss of 1,330 seats as an indictment of the government’s and parliament’s handling of Brexit so far. “To the leader of the opposition, I say this: Let’s listen to what the voters said in the local elections and put our differences aside for a moment, let’s do a deal,” she said in a newspaper editorial on Sunday. The Conservatives and Labour have been locked in cross-party talks for a month to try and break the Brexit impasse currently plaguing Parliament. Both sides have described the

‘Ultra-right indoctrination’ THE parents of a child excluded from a school in Malaga have accused his teacher of ‘indoctrinating’ students. The couple claim the teacher at the Bezmiliana Institute in Torre de Benagalbon, who reportedly supports ultra-right po-
litical party Vox, tried to push her views onto the children. One boy was suspended after the teacher claimed he had pushed her chair and intimidated her. The child’s mother alleged: “I have spoken with students from my son’s class and
other classes and they tell me this teacher in class defends her ideology. That always speaks of Vox, who criticises homosexuals, abortion or gay marriage.” The woman said she had punished her son for ‘lack of respect.’

Spain ‘best’ for solo travellers SPAIN is the best country to travel alone in, according to a US-based magazine’s new ranking. US News and World Report’s ranking placed Spain first in terms of the best offering for solo travellers. It marks the second year in a row that Spain has come first in the ranking, first done in the 1980s. Italy came
second and New Zealand third. The magazine said Spain’s position was based on it being a friendly destination. The table, which scored countries out of 10 across a number of different factors, gave the kindness of Spanish people full marks. Spain’s cultural and artistic offering was also highlighted. It came second to Italy in first and
ahead of Greece in third. The ranking placed those countries in the same order for their adventure tourism offering. Spain scored 9.3 on fun, 9.4 on weather and 4.6 for the ‘sexiness’ of its people. Fashion scored 8.1 and the country was given 7.5 in the modern category. The influence of its culture scored 8.7.

Cepsa issues bond offer MADRID-BASED oil company Cepsa offered investors bonds worth about half a billion euros in London on Monday. The firm has partnered with French bank BNP Paribas for the offer. Initial estimates reportedly show the offer could reach as high as €1 billion. Rating agencies S&P, Fitch and Moody’s have also given assessments of the bonds of BAA3 and BBB-respectively and said their outlook was stable. The offer comes as the sovereign fund of Abu Dhabi Mubaldala agreed to sell 40 per cent of its stake in Cepsa to The Carlyle Group.

Government plans tax hikes SPAIN’S government told EU officials it plans to raise taxes to boost government coffers ahead of plans to boost spending if parliamentary support can be found. The left-leaning Partido Socialista (PSOE) plans to raise taxes to bring revenue to 40.7 per cent of economic output (GDP) by 2022, up from 38.9 per cent currently. The hikes and other economic measures were outlined in the government’s Stabilisation Programme for 2019 to 2022 which was sent to Brussels last week. Government officials said it was part of plans to ensure Spain’s taxation system

working and middle class,” the government added. Madrid said it wanted all companies to pay at least 15 per cent of their profits in taxes. The Stabilisation Programme also estimated that the Spanish economy would grow by 2.2 per cent this year and that unemployment will fall by 10 per cent by 2022. It comes as PSOE plans to rehash its budget plans for this year if it can form a stable coalition following the snap general election. The budget’s failure to pass led Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez to call the vote.
LetterOne Dia takeover offer LUXEMBOURG-BASED investment company LetterOne has formally submitted its bid to acquire a controlling stake in Spanish supermarket Dia for 67 cents a share to the country’s market watchdog. LetterOne’s bid to take over the struggling Spanish supermarket is now set to be reviewed by the National Securities Market Commission. The news comes as Dia has to repay a €305 million loan by June. The company also needs €170 million to avert bankruptcy and its credit lines are set to be closed if no agreement is struck with banks by May 31.

Airbnb host income reminder HOLIDAY accommodation rental site Airbnb has sent a reminder to its Spanish hosts that they will need to declare income earned from using the platform. The company sent a letter to its Spanish hosts which included a summary of their earnings and advice on how to declare their income. This included information on which taxes they will be eligible to be charged for.
Airbnb also included information on how hosts can find tax advisors in their area. The company provided hosts with a phone number for the PwC accounting firm for those who want more information about how much tax they will have to pay. It comes as Airbnb has partnered with the Spanish Association of Tax Advisors (AEDAF) for the second year running to provide tax training for hosts.

Agency on coalitions RATINGS agency Moody’s has said a coalition government between the left-leaning Partido Socialista (PSOE) and the centrist Ciudadanos would be most likely to implement economic reform. The agency said a pact between the two parties could see reforms that it claimed would shore up the Spanish economy and the state pension system. PSOE may also be able to govern alone after winning 123 seats in the Congress of Deputies in the snap election. The party would also be in a position to reach out to Podemos and regional parties, Moody’s added. The rating firm said minority governments returned from elections from 2015 onwards had so far meant that structural economic reforms could not be undertaken. Don Quixote cheese ruling COMPANIES producing manchego cheese which features Don Quixote branding on packaging could be breaking trading rules if they are not covered by product origin rules, an EU court has said. The EU’s Court of Justice ruled companies that do not have accreditation from the Denomination of Origin Queso Manchego organisation could not feature images related to the fictional knight-errant. The court ruled imagery which evoked a certain region, such as Don Quixote and La Mancha, could lead consumers to mistake unofficial products for those protected by Denomination of Origin status. The ruling follows a complaint lodged by the Denomination of Origin after the Quequera Cuquerella company featured images of a famished man on a landscape of windmills and sheep. Fuel prices increase THE price of petrol increased by 1.73 per cent to almost €1.40 a litre during April while that of diesel rose by more than 1.2 per cent to almost €1.30 a litre, according to EU Oil Bulletin figures.

BARCELONA-BASED pharmaceutical company Grifols has bought a controlling stake in the American blood donation firm Interstate Blood Bank Inc for about €89.1 million, with the former now owning 51 per cent of the latter’s stock.
Share payout AMANCIO ORTEGA, the founder and largest shareholder of fashion company Inditex, has taken home €813.1 million in dividend payments and is expected to earn more than €1.6 billion from payouts this year, according to company figures.

LEAPY LEE SAYS IT OTHERS THINK IT WELL well. At least two rare examples of common sense took place last week. A judge overturned the ludicrous decision to award £3,000 to a father who sued a local football club for substituting his 10-year-old son during a game. The father considered the move ‘emotional abuse,’ and had originally reported the club to the local child protection service! To me it was the father’s decision to take this course of action which was the true child abuse. Apart from risking his son dying from embarrassment, he should also receive retribution for failing to equip the lad with some strength of character to face up to the real world. Having said all that, I looked more closely at the case and realised we hadn’t actually found a judge with a bit of common sense, but one who had reversed the decision, purely because the original notification had been sent to the wrong address. Ah well, we’ll all await the new hearing with much anticipation! The second ruling was far more serious and welcome. It concerned the OAP who was exonerated for protecting himself from a young thug who was burgling his house and had threatened both him and his elderly wife with a sharpened screwdriver. The terrified pensioner grabbed a kitchen knife, and in the ensuing melee, the masked intruder received an injury from which he subsequently died. Last week the judge

WELCOME DECISIONS: One ruling exonerated an elderly man defending his home. ruled the householder had ‘lawfully killed’ the man and he was completely exonerated from any charges. And quite right too. I have always considered that once an individual enters your home without permission, they forfeit all their human rights and
legal standing, and become fair game for whatever befalls them. However, in a sad reflection of today’s society, this toe-rag’s family has since issued death threats against the victims, leading to him and his wife having to leave their family home after 42 years and take on different identi-
ties in another part of the country. An unfortunate reminder of the type of lowlifes the UK is spawning in this day and age. I received a positive deluge of mail after last week’s column, in which I highlighted the Muslim company who, somewhat surreptitiously, allegedly announced their decision to build an enclave of London homes strictly for Muslim occupation. A feeling of shocked disbelief seemed to be the general consensus of opinion. It was of course perfectly true, and yet another example of the appeased minorities running slipshod over the beleaguered local citizens. I feel I must take issue with one correspondent however. The gentleman in question cited the fact that there had also been Christian building companies, and even some building accommodation specifically for woman. Yes good sir, I do take your point, but the UK is a Christian country (at the moment!) and the companies you mention weren’t building a segregated area, in a blatantly racist and highly provocative scheme to install a totaly different culture into the heart of one of our great British cities. THE British supermarket industry is often praised as the world’s most advanced, generated by decades of intense rivalry. But when it comes to shopfloor technology, the UK’s lagged behind. In the USA, Amazon’s opening thousands of checkout-free innercity grocery stores, while Walmart deploys thousands of robots in its supermarkets to reduce overheads and improve operational efficiencies. But is it all good news? Hear about the faulty robot that caused the recent Ocado warehouse fire and badly hit the online grocer’s sales? Maybe it was arson in retaliation for the conditions it was working under? You know conditions must be bad when even the robots are burning the place down: bloody robots, taking workers’ jobs, spontaneously combusting! Basically, there’s no getting away from the fact that the age of the robot is already here. It’s just a question of how many there’ll be and how quickly they’ll replace humans. (But hang on! Don’t they already run the civil service, the public sector - and the EU?) According to international research from consultants Deloitte, 38 per cent of compa-

I wanted this read into the Minutes of the meeting so I made sure to have it placed on the official Agenda for the meeting. I made my statement in English, but we always hire an interpreter/translator for the AGM. Notre Dame DEAR Leapy Regarding the fire at Notre Dame and your column, I totally agree with you except that in this case you’re possibly wrong as it was probably caused by a workman with a cigarette. Even in the filming of the repairs after the fire, it can be seen on the BBC news that there was a workman with a cigarette hanging from his lips. What bugs me is that the Catholic church are so quick begging for money for the repair when the Catholic church / Vatican are one of the wealthiest organisations in the world. Take a hike I WAS of course relieved to hear that the group of five girls and a woman had been found safe and well after getting lost hiking in the national park in Nerja, Axarquia. I was amazed to read though that the woman had set off ‘for a few hours walk’ at 6pm. I would have thought there was an obvious risk that it wo u l d b e c o m e d ark an d might be difficult to find the way home in an unfamiliar area. It was also shocking to read that the gro u p we r e a l l we a rin g flip flops! Glad everyone is safe, but a good lesson in taking the necessary precautions in nature. Mrs K Hill

aged 16 to 25 years old. The next day we walked on the beach and the crap they had left was disgusting, plastic glasses, glass bottles and plastic bottles and bags. This is the next generation who obviously don’t give a s**t about the planet. If they

AN open letter written by a group of migrants describing a Madrid detention centre as ‘worse than jail’ raises serious questions about the way arrivals in Spain are treated. One migrant who stayed there compared his experience of being in the Aluche Foreigner Internment Centre (CIE) to purgatory. He and others alleged the centre lacked adequate medical provisions and access to legal representation. Others said they saw assaults and ‘humiliating’ treatment while there. A report drawn up by lawyers in 2015 dubbed the site ‘Spain’s Guantanamo Bay’ in reference to the US prison camp of the same name. Regardless of whether there should be greater or lesser controls on immigration, we should not lose sight of the fact that migrants are human beings deserving of dignity. A society’s moral standing can often be seen in how it treats the most vulnerable. Migrants who have risked their lives to escape dire conditions in their home countries to seek a better life are some of the most vulnerable people in society. Although the motives of some should be checked and investigated, we live in a society where people are presumed innocent until proven guilty. Being held in a centre which occupies the site of a former jail for extended periods of time is effectively imprisonment without trial. If we were in their position we would expect a fair hearing and dignified treatment, not to be treated like convicts.

Low carb has been a popular way of eating for a while, but what the low carb eaters find is that after a while the weight loss slows down and eventually comes to a stop. Carb cycling introduces a more flexible way of eating to keep the body working efficiently and also not depriving it of those all important carbs, which to cut out full stop is not a good idea. There are three types of day: Low carb day On this day you can eat up to 50g of

High carb day The complete opposite of the above, with the amounts based on your personal weight. A fruity version of chicken tagine AFTER four to five weeks in the fridge, my latest batch of preserved lemons were ready, so Tagine it had to be. If you haven’t come across a Tagine before, it is a traditional earthenware pot used in Morocco. The base is shaped like a cazuela or casserole dish, and it has a chimney like lid which sits on the base. The chimney is sealed at the top and the moisture from the meat works its way up to the top on the inside and runs back down to the meats and vegetables cooking in the base, which means little moisture needs to be added. I picked mine up at a local market for just a few euros. You ideally need to soak the pot in hot water before cooking with it. The soaking helps to keep the food moist and stop the vessel from cracking. I have made a few variations of Tagines over the years, but this one I really like. Served with couscous, or rice and crunchy bread it makes a flavourful supper. Chicken Tagine with Apricots, Prunes and Preserved Lemon Ingredients • For 2 - 4 servings • 4 bone-in chicken thighs and or legs (I used breasts this time) • 2 tablespoons olive oil • 1/2 large onion, very finely diced • 4 cloves garlic, very finely diced • 1 teaspoon ground coriander • 1 teaspoon ground ginger • 1 teaspoon ground cumin • 1 tsp ground turmeric • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper • 1 tablespoon harissa, Moroccan chilli sauce (I got this in a British health food store) • 2 - 3 cups chicken stock • 10 pitted dried apricots, cut in half • 6 pitted prunes, cut in quarters (I didn’t have these so used a handful of raisins) • 1/2 preserved lemon • 1 teaspoon butter or ghee (butter works fine) • 2 tablespoons fresh
cilantro - chopped • 2 tablespoons fresh parsley - chopped • 1 tablespoon fresh mint chopped Instructions 1. Place washed and dried chicken into a bowl and combine with harissa (or other spicy chilli sauce) along with the dry spices. Thoroughly coat the chicken and allow to sit in the refrigerator for one two hours. 2. Add the olive oil to the pan over medium heat. Add the onion, garlic, pulp of the preserved lemon, and sauté until the onion softens and goes translucent. 3. Add the chicken to the pan and brown on both sides. 4. Add the prunes or raisins and apricots and simmer a couple of minutes. 5. Add the chicken stock. until the chicken is 3/4 covered by liquid. Bring it to a boil and then reduce the heat
TAGINE: Serve with couscous and crunchy bread. to a simmer. Add the butter or ghee, cilantro and parsley (reserving some for garnishing). Turn the chicken occasionally, and add a little water if the
liquid reduces below covering 1/2 of the chicken. 6. Continue to cook for about 30 minutes to one hour, until the chicken is cooked
through. Turn off the heat, add the lemon peel. 7. Continue to cook for another 15 to 30 minutes until the chicken is cooked through and tender. 8. Serve with crusty bread or with rice or couscous and garnish with more chopped cilantro and parsley. NB - I didn’t add any salt. As the preserved lemons are preserved in salt, even though I rinse them before using, the finished dish for me, is fine as it is.

Louie Weir (17, Partaloa), Bobbie Blakemore (15, Piedra Amarilla) and Lana McMaster (15, Chercos) will fight for a place to represent Spain at the WAKO Europeans in Hungary this summer. According to Spanish property portal Fotocasa the average saving was €11,800 over the asking price. Slightly puzzlingly, some 69 per cent of sellers said they had given an average €14,200 reduction, with the difference attributed to a quirk of the survey methodology. In both cases the reduction was around 10 per cent of the original asking price. But as the property market continues to rise, the number of reductions negotiated last year fell compared to the 73 per cent reported by buyers in 2017. The survey concluded that although prices are rising, demand remains high enough to not just absorb these increases, but also to keep the market driving forward. When it came to buyers, 74 per cent of house hunters said high prices were a problem, with 47 per cent say-

Used homes price rises THE price of second-hand housing in Spain rose 8.4 per cent in the 12 months to the end of March. This was the biggest annual increase since the 2007 height of the property boom. Across Spain the average price of a used home is €1,900/sqm, a figure last seen in November 2012, at €1,906/sqm. “The price of second-hand housing continues to recover some of the ground lost during the crisis, although at very different rates. Madrid and the islands continue to concentrate the largest increases, although prices are still far from the peaks of the boom years except in the case of the Balearic Islands, where the average price is already only 5 per cent below the levels reached in 2007. In the rest of the country, a secondhand home is 35.6 per cent cheaper than 12 years ago and there are regions such as Navarra, Aragon or Castilla La Mancha where the difference is around 50 per cent,” explained Beatriz Toribio, director of studies at property portal Fotocasa. At an interannual level, the price of housing increased in 16 of the 17 Autonomous Communities. Three of them experienced two-digit interannual increases: Madrid (19 per cent), Baleares (12.5 per cent) and Canarias (11.8 per cent). At the other extreme, Asturias was the only community that experienced interannual falls in the first quarter, falling 0.03 per cent. The price of housing in Spain reached an all-time high in April 2007 with a value of €2,952/sqm, 35.6 per cent higher than the present price.

Hyundai upgrade IONIQ IT may be just three years since Hyundai Motor launched its IONIQ range - the first billed to have been designed from the start to offer hybrid, plug-in hybrid and full electric motors - but it is already upgrading. The new IONIQ features advanced Blue Link connectivity services, SmartSense active safety and driving assistance systems and state-of-the-art infotainment features. In addition, both the exterior and interior design receive updates, while drivers of the new IONIQ Electric can also enjoy 36 per cent added energy capacity thanks to an upgraded 38.3kWh battery. With over 60,000 cars sold since its launch in 2016, the original IONIQ has established itself as one of the main pillars in Hyundai’s progressive future
mobility lineup. Together with the hydrogen-powered NEXO, which is equipped with a revolutionary fuel cell electric powertrain, and the Kona Electric, Hyundai claims to be the automaker with the widest range of electrified powertrains. GERMAN carmaker Porsche has taken further steps to becoming carbon neutral after launching two new cogeneration machines at its Stuttgart-Zuffenhausen factory. The carmaker said the machines, which have an output of two megawatts each, run exclusively on biogas and organic waste. They provide heat and hot water for the office on the site which employs almost 12,000 people. The installation of the machines come as Porsche recently replaced natural gas generators for biogas ones at the Stuttgart-Zuffenhausen plant. It also comes as work continues on the Porsche Taycan, the company’s first fully electric car which is currently being put through its paces in performance tests.

CABRERA LAWN BOWLING CLUB has hosted the first competition of the new season, the Almanzara Drawn Hong Kong Pairs. There were some very good rounds, and the club was delighted some of its newer members took part. It was a great final enjoyed by the many spectators who turned up to watch. Paul Cartwright and Barbara Moynihan were pitted against Arthur Lees (91 years young) and Janet Jackson. Both these pairs had an excellent competition and were deservedly in the final. Things did not start off well for Paul and Barbara, who were 11-4 down after eight ends. But after 16 ends

Good challenge FRENCHMAN Antoine Rozner played the back nine in five under par to win the 2019 Challenge de España title by four shots at Izki Golf (Basque Country). He had started the day three strokes behind overnight leader Sebastian Garcia Rodriguez, but brushed the challenge aside by gaining five shots in just four holes in a blemish-free round of a six under par 66 in the European Challenge Tour event. The 26-year-old started well with a birdie on the first before carding 11 consecutive pars. Rozner made his move with birdies on the 13th, 14th and 16th, with the highlight of his day being holing out from 123 yards for an eagle on the 15th. After the event he said: “The victory will bring me confidence. It puts me in a good position in the rankings. It’s going to be a long season, so I’ll keep playing tournament after tournament, fighting to the end, and hopefully get a European Tour card.”
