Cat ruling first By Joe Gerrard A CARTAGENA court has upheld a ruling against the city’s council over the holding of six cats, one of which died while in captivity, in a legal first for Spain. Cartagena’s Administrative Court ruled the council took in the cats from the EL Molinete area in 2016 for reasons based on ‘falsehoods, half-truths and intentional silence,’ judges said. The court sided with the local Cuatro Gatos animal rights group who filed the case. The court heard one cat died in captivity at the Domestic Animal Shelter while the rest were sterilised.

This voided the council’s legal protection in the case of animals dying under Article 20 of the Autonomous Law of 2017. The rul-
ing set a Spanish legal precedent as the law was used in this kind for the first time. The council was ordered to pay all court costs.

Ryanair payout ruling A COURT in Murcia City has ordered budget airline Ryanair to pay out €250 to four passengers stranded at the region’s airport after their flight to Rome was cancelled. Murcia City’s First Commercial Court dismissed Ryanair ’s claim that the flight was cancelled because of bad weather and that the passengers were offered alternatives to resolve the situation. Ryanair lawyers presented weather data about the skies above Rome-Ciampino Airport to support its claim that the cancellation was valid. It also presented a report from Eurocontrol showing storms which struck large parts of Europe on August 17, 2018, the day the flight was due to take off. But the court ruled

in their ruling that Ryanair had presented no evidence to show conditions around the Murcia Region Airport.

Jail for Torrevieja dealers IN less than a year, Operation Mortalek has resulted in nine prison sentences being handed out to drugs dealers. The Guardia Civil of Torrevieja recently ended the project, which focused on cannabis associations throughout the town. During just one raid, more than €40,000 cash was seized together with
drugs worth more than €216,000. This included three plantations of cannabis, 25 kilos of marihuana, 4.5 kilos of hashish, 541 grams of hashish oil and 11 kilos of cannabis derivatives. A number of shops selling various drugs described as other products were also raided, revealing the extent of the operation.
The 38 arrests covered many different nationalities: Spanish, Colombian, Russian, Ukrainian, Dutch and British. All of the 10 shops involved have now been closed down. The authorities noted that the different drugs were sold, without any control, to residents, tourists, adults and children with total disregard for their safety.

Church fair LA SIESTA Evangelical Church in Torrevieja has put together a packed programme of events and attractions for its fundraising fair next weekend. As well as a tombola and raffle there will be ‘guess the weight of the cake,’ bric-a-brac, tea and coffee, stalls selling books, cakes, bags and jewellery and hot dogs. In addition, there will be shoes by Shoe Amor, crystals by Jess, clothes Tulsa Moda, handmade greetings cards by Ann and Pat, CBD oils by Gemma and new jewellery by PARATI. The Royal British Legion Band are performing at the fundraising event at the church in Calle Granados on Saturday, May 18 from 10.30am.
Highspending FOUR out of 10 properties in the Alicante region were bought by foreign citizens last year, according to a recent report from the College of Real Estate Agents (API). And with an increase in sales of over 6 per cent to people from 125 countries, the area now has the third highest number of sales to foreigners in all of Spain. The president of the API, Marifé Esteso, suggested there is a sustained growth in sales. “The data shows Alicante continues to be an attractive coastline market for citizens around the world,” he said.

High flyer THIS picture of a black kite in flight over Cadiz Province comes as Spain and the world marks International Migratory Bird Day tomorrow (Friday). The black kite (Milvus migrans) is a bird of prey and is the most populous species in the Accipitridae family, numbering an estimated six million. They are also part of a group known as raptor birds. Black kites tend to form large flocks during their migration, particularly when crossing water. Black kites in Spain feed on waterfowl during the summer to feed their young. They have also been known to carry off the nests of other black kites for their eggs.

Botanical gardens A NEW tourism project, the Orihuela Tourist Orchard, was announced on Friday by the councillor for Tourism, Sofía Álvarez. The idea is to promote agriculture and raise awareness of the diverse range of plants that can be grown in the Vega Baja, as well as providing employment. It will be located by the river inside a botanical garden formed by a large range of Mediterranean plants and trees representing the different ecosystems of the re-

gion. “It seeks to implement an educational space focused on heritage and environment,” said the mayor, Snra Álvarez, who stressed that the gardens will also “prioritise the local culture, bringing income and employment to the area.” Examples of the huge range of agriculture include the vineyards of Torrevieja, the artichokes of Almoradí; the oranges of Benijófar; the hemp of Callosa and the lemon crops of Los Montesinos.

The birds breed in Spain during the summer after migrating from their home in subSaharan Africa. Black kites can also be found in Oceania and South Asia and migrate to other parts of Europe, the Middle East a n d Russia. The birds do not have many predators due to their nature as a bird of prey and their size. H o w e v e r, the Eurasian Eagle Owl does target black kites, both while the birds are young and fully grown. Many of the birds die after being electrocuted because they tend to perch on power lines and they can also cause problems while flying near airports. Some are also hit and killed by cars while swooping to catch dead rats and other roadkill. Black kites are listed in the Least Concern category on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species.

These changes are part of a larger programme to improve the Santa Ana Industrial Estate, having suffered with heavy traffic over recent years. Other works include repainting of the traffic signalling, improvement to public lighting and CCTV. Improvements should be completed by the end of the year.

For only €17 (or €13 for under 12’s), the trip is a full three hours of fun from start to finish with Rafting Blanca, just north of Murcia. Euro Weekly News spoke with Demi Surtees from Sunderland, who experienced the fun only last year. “I couldn’t believe how much fun could be had, just messing about in the water! We started the trip higher up in Cieza with a raft full of family and friends,” she said, adding: “The slow start meandering down the gorge had us taking photos of the wonderful views. “But as we came round one bend, there was a terrific weir which had us all screaming. “The staff were great and there was never any danger, as the water was only a foot deep or so. “Not long after that was a near vertical drop which had us clinging on to each other. The icing on the day’s cake was a complimentary sandwich and a couple of beers. Twin towns FIESTA season is well under way in the twin towns of Ciudad Quesada and Rojales, with another week of festivities. The highlight of the next few days includes ‘Fiestas de las Naciones’ (Parties of the Nations). Orihuela City Orchestra kick off proceedings performing a selection of classic movie soundtracks in an
evening of ‘Musica de Cine’ at 8.30pm tomorrow (Friday) at the Cultural Centre in Ciudad Quesada. Entrance is free, and it is advisable to get there early. Attention is focused the next evening towards Plaza Blanca for the opening of the food and craftwork stands, along with a dancing parade
by local schoolchildren. A giant Spanish omelette will be served up at 9pm. Sunday night sees the Moscow State Ballet celebrate their 30th year by performing their interpretation of ‘Swan Lake’ at Teatro Capitol in Rojales, which also sees Alicante’s Orchestra Sinfonica play out ‘Oscar Espla’ next Thursday.

Beaches set for the summer by Simon Wade THE Department of Beaches has started installing eight new rescue booths along the Orihuela Costa. The councillor of Beaches, Luisa Boné, reported that the older facilities were merely rented and had limited facilities. Additionally, in order to qualify for Blue Flag status, changes had to be made. Hence, the department designed the new rescue booths with three distinct functions - to improve the service provided, improve the working conditions of rescue personnel, and to improve the overall image of safety facilities on the beaches. The booths are self-supporting modules that are as carbon neutral as possible. Natural materials such as wood and prefabricated construction systems were used, so there is a limited impact on the en-

Two booths have already been installed at Le Glea (Campoamor) and Cala Bosque (La Zenia), with the rest arriving over the coming weeks. The total project cost was €173,000.
TORREVIEJA officials have announced the construction of a new municipal animal shelter in the city. Carmen Morate, councillor for Animal Protection, described the project as ‘ambitious and necessary’ and admitted the current shelter is failing. The new shelter will be larger and capable of accommodating more than 100 animals. Particular work has gone into consulting with current staff and volunteers in order to ascertain needs and demands. Municipal architect, Carlos Pascual, outlined the details. The new hostel will be on Rosa Mazón Avenue, and will have reception, offices, veterinary consultation room, surgery theatres, a laundry, an audio-visual room and locker room for staff. There will also be quarantine rooms and another for animals in observation. As well as the ability to provide improved accommodation for dogs, it also includes a catwalk area split into three parts. There will also be an area for larger animals such as horses or donkeys, and another for birds. The shelter will even include an area for pets to be walked. Work is expected to be completed this year.

A PRO-INDEPENDENCE politician and former deputy from Cataluña, Joan Tardà, suggested in a speech on Saturday Valencia, as a region, should say ‘enough’ to what he said was the permanent plunder of the region by the Spanish nation. He argued that Valencia should follow Cataluna and seek independence. He urged people to aspire to self-determination and that one day he hoped to see an Independent Republic of Valencia. In response, Jorge Bellver, the PP Deputy to Les Corts in Valencia said that the statements by Tardà ‘have been a heap of nonsense in which he joined together all independentistas yearnings, from the imaginary Països Catalans to the ‘Republic of Country Valencià’ hoping that Valencia will join a process of self-determination.’

Jobs for farm workers
WORK: Summer employment for farm workers. MORE than 100 previously unemployed farm workers will be given jobs this year by Orihuela City Council throughout this coming summer. Councillor for Employment, Victor Valverde, reported that
the three month contracts will be given out in order to repair, condition and clean various rural and urban green areas, coastal urbanisations, public spaces and the Peri-urban Green Belt of Orihuela (Palm Grove, Cerro de San Miguel,
Monte the Oriolet and the Sotos del Segura River). Valverde wanted to emphasise that over the last year, ‘more than 100 unemployed Oriolanos now benefit from work, while green and municipal spaces benefit too.’

Cleanest in southern Spain ELCHE is the cleanest city in southern Spain, according to the Organisation of Consumers and Users (OCU). The councilman of Cleaning of the City Council of Elche, Hector Diez, raised the point that although being 20th in the country (out of 60 surveyed), the 19 areas placed higher in the survey are all in the north. He also pointed to the fact that northern towns have newer street sanitation equipment and much more rain, making them easier to clean. Diez confidently promised by the time the next OCU report is published in 2023, ‘we are going to rub elbows with the cleanest cities in the north of Spain.’

CHANGES: The zoo said it would only take in animals that can be reintroduced to the wild.
Ethical zoo reforms BARCELONA’S zoo has announced it will reform its policy on which animals it takes in a bid to become more ethical. Zoo staff said they were attempting to move zoo policy towards helping conservation efforts for species in the wild.
They said that the only animals that would be taken in would be those that can be later reintroduced into their natural habitat. Animal rights groups welcomed the move and said the case of each animal there would
have to be studied in light of its specific circumstances. Zoo workers have opposed the changes and threatened to call strikes last week, fearing a fall in visitors if animals are released. Barcelona Zoo is currently home to about 300 different species.

A GROUP of more than 100 migrants previously held at a detention facility in Madrid have written a joint letter claiming conditions there were ‘worse than jail.’ The migrants claimed they witnessed assaults, a lack of medical attention and humiliating treatment at the Aluche Foreigner Internment Centre (CIE). One former inmate, a former Venezuelan army officer, told the media his experience there was like being in ‘purgatory.’

Fraction of managers women FEMALE managers make up 16 per cent of the total in Spain, down from 20 per cent at the start of the last recession according to a new report. The ICSA Group and EADA Business School’s Female Talent report for this year found an average difference in the salaries of male and
female managers of €11,492. The study surveyed more than 80,000 managers throughout Spain. Indry Chancila, of the ISCA, said companies needed to take more of an initiative in promoting gender equality and not wait for the state to pass laws enforcing it.

‘Accidental’ cremation STAFF at a funeral home in Galicia accidentally cremated the body of a Portuguese man after mixing up his body with another, the region’s Institute of Legal Medicine has said. Institute officials said the mix up happened when staff took delivery of two bod-
ies at the funeral home in Vigo. The corpse of a Vigo resident set to be sent to relatives along with personal belongings was confused with that of a Portuguese citizen who was not properly identified. Galicia’s Junta apologised to both families for the ‘very painful’ situation.

Cancer progress A SPANISH oncologist has taken part in a study into the most effective and least toxic cancer treatments. Elisabeth Perez, a specialist in Medical Oncology from Costa del Sol Hospital in Marbella, worked with researchers from CIMA and the University Clinic of Navarra to trial treatments which are less harmful. Their work was published in Nature, one of the world’s most respected scientific journals.
Missing British man passed away
REMEMBRANCE: Family gathered to say a farewell to Tony. ANTHONY (TONY) OLDHAM, who was reported missing last month, passed away last Saturday. The man hadn’t been seen since April 1 when he was reported missing and was
last spotted near the Renfe train station in Fuengirola. Tony was found on April 3. His partner has since stated that ‘Tony passed away last Saturday. There will be a gathering at Mariners on the
marina today (Thursday) at 3pm in remembrance of Tony.’ Anthony is originally from Dukinfield but lived and worked in Spain for 15 years.

Digital progress SPAIN has come 10th in a ranking of EU countries and their progress towards digitisation, up from 12th last year. The European Commission’s Digital Economy and Society Index (DESI) placed Spain ahead of Germany, France and Italy. It came behind Demark, Sweden, Finland and Britain which were in first, second, third and seventh place respectively. The index score countries based on their connectivity, human capital, the use of internet, digital integration and digital public services. The EU said Spain and Ireland had made the most progress towards digitisation of the EU’s member states. It added challenges for Spain included the fact that one in five Spanish people are not online and around half lack basic digital skills.

Puigdemont rights claim THE former president of the Catala n Ge n e r a l i t a t h as called on the EU to sanction Spain under human rights rules over its response to the region’s independence push.
Ca rle s P u ig d emo n t ha s lodged a case with the European Commission claiming Spain violated Article Seven of the Treaty of the European Union. The article covers actions
the EU can take if member states are found to be violating human rights rules. Puigdemont said the case lodged against Spain would be a test of the power of EU citizenship.

Puigdemont also claimed Spain had failed to conduct legal proceedings into the secession attempt impartially. It comes as EU Rights Commissioner Franz Timmermans said last month that Spain applied the rule of law fairly and respected EU rules. Puigdemont will need to get one million people from at least seven EU member states to sign a petition in support of his efforts for it to be considered. The EU will then have two months to decide whether to proceed or dismiss the claim. Article Seven was used to sanction Poland for changes to its justice system and media regulation and proceedings in 2015. Vox ‘hate crime’ probe PROSECUTORS in the Va l e n c i a R e g i o n h a v e placed the deputy leader of the far-right Vox under investigation for alleged hate crimes against Muslims.
Investigators launched the probe into comments from Javier Ortega Smith, the party’s General Secret a r y, a f t e r h e d u b b e d t h e arrival of Muslims into Spain ‘an invasion.’
The Muslims against Islamophobia group filed a complaint with prosecutors over the comments, saying they were ‘highly alarmist’ and threatened peace and co-existence.

La Manada video fine by Joe Gerrard SPAIN’S data protection watchdog has fined one of those convicted of sexual assault during the so-called La Manada (Wolfpack in English) trial for sharing a video of the abuse. The Data Protection Agency fined Alfonso Jesus Cabezuelo €150,000 for sharing the video which is said to show he and four other men assaulting a woman in Pamplona in 2016. The assault took place during the town’s San Fermin Running of the Bulls festival. A feminist group and Navarra’s regional authority filed the case with the agency. Agustin Martinez, the lawyer acting for Cabezuelo and the four others convicted over the assault, said the penalty was ‘insane.’ The lawyer claimed Cabezuelo did not share the video but that it was taken

Journalism protection call by Joe Gerrard A TRADE UNION representing Spanish journalists has called for professional secrecy rules to be brought in to help preserve the freedom of the press. UGT said professional secrecy for journalists would help strengthen Article 20 of Spain’s Constitution. It comes as the world marked International Press Freedom Day on Friday. Mariano Rivero, the UGT’s journalism spokesperson, said there had been ‘very serious’ efforts to undermine press freedoms in Spain. He cited the seizing of mobile phones and documents from the offices of Europa Press, EFE and Diario de Mallorca on the island in December. Those news organisations

Measles epidemic worries A DISEASE organisation has warned that Spain faces an increasing threat from measles after data showed cases have spiked in neighbouring countries. The Spanish Society of Primary Care Doctors (Semergen) said cases of measles had risen globally by 300 per cent during the first three months of this year compared to the same time in 2018. Semergen added data from the World Health Organisation (WTO) showed the rise came as part of an upward trend during the last two years. Antoni Trilla, of Barcelona’s Clinical Hospi-
tal, said both France and Italy had seen about 2,500 cases of measles each since March 2018. The head of the Spanish Association of Vaccines (AEV) Amos Garcia Rojas said: “The solution is to be vaccinated. “Until a few years ago it was an act of faith, because one is immunised against something which does not exist at the time. But that is precisely why it is done, because vaccines erase diseases.” Semergen’s Manuel Linares Rufo said measles was a highly contagious virus which killed about 110,000 in 2017 alone.

After the vote By Joe Gerrard TALKS to build a coalition government have begun after Spanish voters gave no single party an absolute majority in the snap general election. The left-leaning Partido Socialista (PSOE) is in prime position to form a coalition after it won 123 seats. That is almost double that of the conservative Partido Popular (PP), which won 66 seats after support was sapped by the centrist Ciudadanos and the far-right Vox. Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez has invited the leaders of all of Spain’s parties for talks, except for Vox. PP leader Pablo Casado met with Sanchez on Monday and brought with him a wish list including pro-market economic reforms and measures to deal with the ongoing Catalan indepen-

He could return to his pre-election partners the leftist Podemos, whose leader Pablo Iglesias has already offered to join with PSOE. Iglesias said Podemos deputies would have to be given ministerial positions with PSOE, but Sanchez has ruled this out for the time being.
Between them the parties would have 165 deputies, meaning they would need other smaller groups to reach the 176 majority figure. The prime minister could also reach out to Ciudadanos which won 57 seats. That option is favoured by Spanish business and would give both a combined majority of 180, but there is little appetite for it among PSOE’s rank and file. Sanchez could choose to go it
alone, an option floated by senior PSOE figures including Organisational Secretary Jose Luis Abalos. But there would be no guarantee of a majority of deputies supporting his investiture vote, raising the prospect of an impasse. As Sanchez looks to build a workable government, Spain’s formerly pre-eminent right-wing party faces an existential crisis. The PP’s result was the worst in its history. It remains the largest right-wing party, but only by a slim margin of nine seats. Commentators have interpreted the party’s result as proof that Casado’s strategy of pivoting to the right to combat Vox was a tactical mistake. There are signs the party could try to return to the centre, with party sources suggesting nationalist rhetoric could be toned down ahead of the European elections this month.
Female representation WOMEN were one of the biggest winners of Spain’s snap general election as female deputies now make up almost half of the Congress of Deputies. There are 164 women to 184 men now sitting in the lower house of Spain’s Cortes following the vote on Sunday April 28. Women make up 46.8 per cent of congress members, the highest proportion in the country’s history. Spain now has the sixth-highest amount of female members of its parliament in the world and the second highest in Europe, according to figures from the Inter-Parliamentary Union. The proportion of women to men has increased eight-fold since a law passed in 2007 requiring political parties to ensure their candidate lists are roughly gender equal. There were 21 deputies in the lower house before the law came into force, about 6 per cent of the total. It comes as Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez has made gender equality a central plank in his progressive platform since he first took office in June. A total of 11 women are in his 17-strong Council of Ministers, the heads of each of Spain’s government departments. Opposition to parking charges THERE has been considerable opposition to the introduction of parking charges
at a Costa del Sol hospital. The fees at Marbella Hospital have been agreed by
the Ministry of Health and the city of Marbella and have already been imposed. But representatives of the trade unions CCOO, Satse and USO, and the consumers’ association Facua Malaga have since blasted them. A joint statement argued that charging fees to park in hospitals is ‘contrary to the right to public, free and universal health.’ The groups also stressed that it is clear that no one intends to use this space as a residents’ parking lot, nor does it present itself as a leisure and entertainment area. ‘It is, on the contrary, to access a public health centre and a necessity.’ The group has already put a petition to the government of Andalucia to scrap the charges at this and other hospitals in the region.

Defence spending by Joe Gerrard SPAIN spent the 16th largest amount on defence of any country in the world last year at almost €16.4 billion, according to new research from a think tank. The Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI) found Spain’s defence spending fell by 5.2 per cent between 2008 and 2018. Spain bucked a global rise, with global defence spending now 76 per cent
higher than it was in 1998. Jordi Calvo, of the Spainbased Delas Centre for Peace Studies, said global figures showed that a Cold War-style arms race was developing. Global military spending stood at more than €1.6 trillion in 2018, equivalent to 2.1 per cent of the world’s economic output (GDP) or more than €214 per person. The five countries with the largest military budgets in 2018 were the US, China, Saudi Arabia, India and
France. Their spending accounted for about 60 per cent of the global total. Calvo said the Spanish state’s spending on military equipment was helping to prop up a military industrial complex, or mutual link between the government and the arms industry. Spain’s dealings with Saudi Arabia in particular were fuelling violence in the ongoing Yemen Civil War which the UN said had spawned the world’s worst humanitarian crisis.

The GMB union said working class communities could be ‘sold down the river’ by the British government which they claimed was seeking to pacify Madrid during Brexit negotia-
tions. Spanish state-backed shipyard Navantia is one of four companies bidding for the Ministry of Defence contract to build three 40,000-ton Fleet Solid Support vessels for the Royal Fleet Auxiliary. The Scottish shipbuilder Babcock is the only British company bidding for the contract. Gary Smith, of GMB Scotland, said years of work would be created in British yards if Babcock is awarded the contract.
“Against the backdrop of a ruinous Brexit, the loss of the RFAs would be an absolute betrayal of the British shipbuilding sector by the Tory government,” Smith said. A Ministry of Defence spokesperson said they were required by law to put the contract out to international bidding. “The final decision regarding tenders for the winning bid will be made in 2020,” the spokesperson said.

Organ donation Living in Spain can bring with it an array of issues which may not have been encountered when living in the UK. There are lots of things to consider, and we are here to help try to make the transition and life in Spain a little easier by compiling a series of helpful facts and figures relating to a variety of topics. As of 2010, Spain has operated an ‘opt-out’ (or presumed consent) system for deceased organ donation. This addresses the rate or refusal of potential donors or their families in giving permission for the use of organs. The rate of family refusal in Spain is 13 per cent, compared to 37 per cent in England (according to the National Transplant Organisation figures - ONT). According to the ONT, Brits living in Spain are more likely to donate their organs than their countrymen back home. It’s not necessary to have a donor card. What is important is to let family members and loved ones know your wishes in terms of organ donation. Figures published by the Spanish ONT in 2017 put the country as world leader in donation and transplants, reaching a new record with 46.9 donors per million people and 5.261 transplants. Spain has been a global leader in organ donation and transplantation for the past 26 years. Broken down by organ, there were 3,269 kidney surgeries (up 9 per cent on 2016), 1,247 liver transplants (up 8 per cent), 304 heart procedures (8 per cent rise), 363 lung surgeries (up 18 per cent), 70 pancreas transplants (down 4 per cent) and eight bowel surgical procedures (up 100 per cent). According to the National Transplant Organisation (ONT), these surgeries are equivalent to six donors and 14 surgical procedures a day. In addition, Spain saw a new record in bone marrow donation last year, with 78,291 new donors and an increase of 196 per cent over the previous year. At this rate, the country could reach its target of 400,000 bone marrow donors well before the mid-2020 goal. In Spain the number of those on the waiting list was reduced to 4,896 in 2017, from 5,480, although the number of children waiting for organs increased to 74, from 48 a year earlier. Lung and heart are viable for 4-6 hours after death, liver and pancreas 24 hours, kidney 72 hours, corneas 14 days, bone and skin five years, and heart valves up to 10 years. Small intestines, veins, tendons and ligaments can also be donated. A single organ donor can save up to eight people and a single tissue donor may enhance the lives of up to 50 people. POLICE in Sri Lanka have identified all nine people thought to be suicide bombers who killed 257 people on Easter Sunday. Officers claimed two of the terrorists were brothers from a wealthy family of spice importers from Colombo and confirmed the attackers’ assets would now be seized. Zahran Hashim has been named as the leader of a local jihadist group behind the bombings. He detonated his device alongside fellow Islamist Ilham Ahmed Mohamed Ibrahim at the luxury Shangri-La hotel. Ilham’s elder brother Ishaf Ahmed is suspected of bombing the Cinnamon Grand Hotel nearby. A third hotel, the Kingsbury, was allegedly bombed by Mohamed Azzam Mubarak Mohamed. Spain ‘best’ for solo travellers SPAIN is the best country to travel alone in, according to a US-based magazine’s new ranking. US News and World Report’s ranking placed Spain first in terms of the best offering for solo travellers. It marks the second year in a row that Spain has come first in the ranking, first done in the 1980s. Italy came
second and New Zealand third. The magazine said Spain’s position was based on it being a friendly destination. The table, which scored countries out of 10 across a number of different factors, gave the kindness of Spanish people full marks. Spain’s cultural and artistic offering was also highlighted. It came second to Italy in first and
ahead of Greece in third. The ranking placed those countries in the same order for their adventure tourism offering. Spain scored 9.3 on fun, 9.4 on weather and 4.6 for the ‘sexiness’ of its people. Fashion scored 8.1 and the country was given 7.5 in the modern category. The influence of its culture scored 8.7.

ETA disbandment: One year on By Joe Gerrard PEOPLE and political groups in the Basque Country marked one year since the nationalist terror group ETA announced it would disband, on Friday. The pro-Basque independence EH Bildu party held an event to mark the anniversary in San Sebastian on Saturday. It comes as 206 ETA prisoners continue to serve sentences in Spain while another 41 remain jailed in France and elsewhere. The Spanish government has moved some inmates closer to the Basque Country since May last year. The Amnesty Ta Askatasuna (ATA) advocacy group for ETA prisoners continues to demand their release, claiming they have no intention of committing more attacks. Cepsa issues bond offer MADRID-BASED oil company Cepsa offered investors bonds worth about half a billion euros in London on Monday. The firm has partnered with French bank BNP Paribas for the offer. Initial estimates reportedly show the offer could reach as high as €1 billion. The left-leaning Partido Socialista (PSOE) plans to raise taxes to bring revenue to 40.7 per cent of economic output (GDP) by 2022, up from 38.9 per cent currently. It comes as PSOE plans to rehash its budget plans for this year if it can form a stable coalition following the snap general election. The budget’s failure to pass led Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez to call the vote.
LetterOne Dia takeover offer LUXEMBOURG-BASED investment company LetterOne has formally submitted its bid to acquire a controlling stake in Spanish supermarket Dia for 67 cents a share to the country’s market watchdog. LetterOne’s bid to take over the struggling Spanish supermarket is now set to be reviewed by the National Securities Market Commission. The news comes as Dia has to repay a €305 million loan by June. The company also needs €170 million to avert bankruptcy and its credit lines are set to be closed if no agreement is struck with banks by May 31.

Airbnb host income reminder HOLIDAY accommodation rental site Airbnb has sent a reminder to its Spanish hosts that they will need to declare income earned from using the platform. The company sent a letter to its Spanish hosts which included a summary of their earnings and advice on how to declare their income. This included information on which taxes they will be eligible to be charged for.
Airbnb also included information on how hosts can find tax advisors in their area. The company provided hosts with a phone number for the PwC accounting firm for those who want more information about how much tax they will have to pay. It comes as Airbnb has partnered with the Spanish Association of Tax Advisors (AEDAF) for the second year running to provide tax training for hosts.
Industry growth G R O W T H i n S p a i n ’s manufacturing sector is speeding up, according to the latest PMI industry figure of 51.8 for April compared to 50.9 for March with the increase driven by rises in output and orders.
Firm funds THE Barcelona-based Glovo home delivery company has raised around €150 million in a round of financing undertaken to improve its engineering division and to boost its SuperGlovo supermarket product service.
Work bids PUBLIC works projects worth more than €5.3 billion were available for companies to bid for during the first quarter of this year, 23.3 per cent more than the same time in 2018 according to government data.

Agency on coalitions RATINGS agency Moody’s has said a coalition government between the left-leaning Partido Socialista (PSOE) and the centrist Ciudadanos would be most likely to implement economic reform. The agency said a pact between the two parties could see reforms that it claimed would shore up the Spanish economy and the state pension system. PSOE may also be able to govern alone after winning 123 seats in the Congress of Deputies in the snap election. The party would also be in a position to reach out to Podemos and regional parties, Moody’s added. The rating firm said minority governments returned from elections from 2015 onwards had so far meant that structural economic reforms could not be undertaken. PSOE’s position in the Congreso opens the way to achieve a more stable government which could boost Spain’s credit rating, making it cheaper for the country to borrow, Moody’s added. The ratings agency said the economic fallout from the Catalan independence situation could be more easily contained due to the election results.

Don Quixote cheese ruling COMPANIES producing manchego cheese which features Don Quixote branding on packaging could be breaking trading rules if they are not covered by product origin rules, an EU court has said. The EU’s Court of Justice ruled companies that do not have accreditation from the Denomination of Origin Queso Manchego organisation could not feature images related to the fictional knight-errant. The court ruled imagery which evoked a certain region, such as Don Quixote and La Mancha, could lead consumers to mistake unofficial products for those protected by Denomination of Origin status. The ruling follows a complaint lodged by the Denomination of Origin after the Quequera Cuquerella company featured images of a famished man on a landscape of windmills and sheep. Fuel prices increase THE price of petrol increased by 1.73 per cent to almost €1.40 a litre during April while that of diesel rose by more than 1.2 per cent to almost €1.30 a litre, according to EU Oil Bulletin figures.

it to sell their goods. There can be no exceptions to using the imagery if a company is not accredited, even if the cheesemaker is based in La Mancha, the court said. The Supreme Court is now set to weigh the EU court’s decision in its ruling on the use of the branding. The case continues.
BARCELONA-BASED pharmaceutical company Grifols has bought a controlling stake in the American blood donation firm Interstate Blood Bank Inc for about €89.1 million, with the former now owning 51 per cent of the latter’s stock.
Share payout AMANCIO ORTEGA, the founder and largest shareholder of fashion company Inditex, has taken home €813.1 million in dividend payments and is expected to earn more than €1.6 billion from payouts this year, according to company figures.

LEAPY LEE SAYS IT OTHERS THINK IT WELL well. At least two rare examples of common sense took place last week. A judge overturned the ludicrous decision to award £3,000 to a father who sued a local football club for substituting his 10-year-old son during a game. The father considered the move ‘emotional abuse,’ and had originally reported the club to the local child protection service! To me it was the father’s decision to take this course of action which was the true child abuse. Apart from risking his son dying from embarrassment, he should also receive retribution for failing to equip the lad with some strength of character to face up to the real world. Having said all that, I looked more closely at the case and realised we hadn’t actually found a judge with a bit of common sense, but one who had reversed the decision, purely because the original notification had been sent to the wrong address. Ah well, we’ll all await the new hearing with much anticipation! The second ruling was far more serious and welcome. It concerned the OAP who was exonerated for protecting himself from a young thug who was burgling his house and had threatened both him and his elderly wife with a sharpened screwdriver. The terrified pensioner grabbed a kitchen knife, and in the ensuing melee, the masked intruder received an injury from which he subsequently died. Last week the judge

Rare common sense
WELCOME DECISIONS: One ruling exonerated an elderly man defending his home. ruled the householder had ‘lawfully killed’ the man and he was completely exonerated from any charges. And quite right too. I have always considered that once an individual enters your home without permission, they forfeit all their human rights and
legal standing, and become fair game for whatever befalls them. However, in a sad reflection of today’s society, this toe-rag’s family has since issued death threats against the victims, leading to him and his wife having to leave their family home after 42 years and take on different identi-
ties in another part of the country. An unfortunate reminder of the type of lowlifes the UK is spawning in this day and age. I received a positive deluge of mail after last week’s column, in which I highlighted the Muslim company who, somewhat surreptitiously, allegedly announced their decision to build an enclave of London homes strictly for Muslim occupation. A feeling of shocked disbelief seemed to be the general consensus of opinion. It was of course perfectly true, and yet another example of the appeased minorities running slipshod over the beleaguered local citizens. I feel I must take issue with one correspondent however. The gentleman in question cited the fact that there had also been Christian building companies, and even some building accommodation specifically for woman. Yes good sir, I do take your point, but the UK is a Christian country (at the moment!) and the companies you mention weren’t building a segregated area, in a blatantly racist and highly provocative scheme to install a totaly different culture into the heart of one of our great British cities. FOLLOWING the death of a friend, lover of Northern Soul, Terry Hopkinson, decided to set up a charity to raise funds for Prostate Cancer Research in 2013. He came up with the idea that other lovers of this thriving music style which dates back to the late 1960s would be happy to attend special events where they could dance to their favourite music and help raise funds for Charity Soul. All funds raised are channelled to the Prostate L a b o r a t o r y a t t h e Yo r k University Cancer Research Centre run by Professor Norman Maitland and his team. Prostate Cancer is the most common form of cancer in the UK and statistics suggest that one in eight men can become infected. Although there are tests to catch the disease at very early stages, it can still be fatal if not treated urgently. The scientists at the research unit are working in the area of cancer stem cells. This is a relatively new and exciting area of research. There are labs all
over the world working on different cancer stem cells in different cancer types. Knowledge obtained in one cancer can be useful in another cancer type. Cancer stem cells are considered as the root of the cancer and are not susceptible to current chemotherapy and radiotherapy. During the last 10 years, Prof Maitland’s team has isolated and characterised these cells and now the aim of the research is focused on what makes these cells different, how to sensitise them to current treatments as well as developing new treatments. Professor Maitland and his colleagues have found ‘the root’ of prostate cancer and therefore revolutionised research methodology so continued support of their research is vital.

Notre Dame DEAR Leapy Regarding the fire at Notre Dame and your column, I totally agree with you except that in this case you’re possibly wrong as it was probably caused by a workman with a cigarette. Even in the filming of the repairs after the fire, it can be seen on the BBC news that there was a workman with a cigarette hanging from his lips. What bugs me is that the Catholic church are so quick begging for money for the repair when the Catholic church / Vatican are one of the wealthiest organisations in the world. Take a hike I WAS of course relieved to hear that the group of five girls and a woman had been found safe and well after getting lost hiking in the national park in Nerja, Axarquia. I was amazed to read though that the woman had set off ‘for a few hours walk’ at 6pm. I would have thought there was an obvious risk that it wo u l d b e c o m e d ark an d might be difficult to find the way home in an unfamiliar area. It was also shocking to read that the gro u p we r e a l l we a rin g flip flops! Glad everyone is safe, but a good lesson in taking the necessary precautions in nature. Mrs K Hill

Beach rave Hi Leapy, Keep up the good columns. I agree with 95 per cent of what you say. I have been on holiday for a few months in Spain and was at Cullera, south of Valencia on Saturday, April 27, and the youngsters had organised a rave on the beach,
aged 16 to 25 years old. The next day we walked on the beach and the crap they had left was disgusting, plastic glasses, glass bottles and plastic bottles and bags. This is the next generation who obviously don’t give a s**t about the planet. If they

AN open letter written by a group of migrants describing a Madrid detention centre as ‘worse than jail’ raises serious questions about the way arrivals in Spain are treated. One migrant who stayed there compared his experience of being in the Aluche Foreigner Internment Centre (CIE) to purgatory. He and others alleged the centre lacked adequate medical provisions and access to legal representation. Others said they saw assaults and ‘humiliating’ treatment while there. A report drawn up by lawyers in 2015 dubbed the site ‘Spain’s Guantanamo Bay’ in reference to the US prison camp of the same name. Regardless of whether there should be greater or lesser controls on immigration, we should not lose sight of the fact that migrants are human beings deserving of dignity. A society’s moral standing can often be seen in how it treats the most vulnerable. Migrants who have risked their lives to escape dire conditions in their home countries to seek a better life are some of the most vulnerable people in society. Although the motives of some should be checked and investigated, we live in a society where people are presumed innocent until proven guilty. Being held in a centre which occupies the site of a former jail for extended periods of time is effectively imprisonment without trial. If we were in their position we would expect a fair hearing and dignified treatment, not to be treated like convicts.

Honey trap DESPITE the popular belief that honey is good for us, one charity has warned consumers are being ‘misled’ into eating it in ‘excessive’ quantities. Action on Sugar analysed 223 honey-based products from UK supermarkets and found many contained honeys which are full of normal sugar. While honeys such as Manuka may provide some additional health benefits, experts warned they still contain ‘free sugars,’ which can lead to type 2 diabetes and obesity. Action on Sugar said misinformation surrounding honeys made many people unaware their sugar levels are as high as table sugars. Campaign lead Dr Kawther Hashem said: “It’s disappointing that companies boast about products containing honey, knowing that honey and syrups are nearly as high in sugars as table sugar.” The charity is now demanding that front of pack labelling displays a product’s sugar content.

It is the season of new life, of birth and rebirth, of sun and outdoor activities, of holidays and making new plans, of positivity and smiles and so much more. Spring is life, our planet’s way of giving us a new chance and showing us how beautiful she is. And even when we know that the spring season will end after three months. we also know since the moment we are on this planet that it will come again
change at any moment in time. And even when is hard to do sometimes… remember that like the seasons it is all temporary and spring will eventually come back into your life. PERFORMANCE: The Show Choir is performing in Torrevieja next week and is directed by Paul Day (inset). THE community-based Southend Show Choir, one of the most popular in Essex, is set to perform two shows in Torrevieja in aid of charity. The shows are in aid of Alimentos Solidarios Torrevieja and are being put on in conjunction with Lions Club Torrevieja Suomi. The first takes place at Torrevieja’s Old Casino on Thursday May 16 at 8pm. The second is due to be staged at the White Church of Plaza de Oriente on Saturday May 18 at 8.30pm. Founded in 2012 by Paul Day, the group places the emphasis on fun and the enjoyment of singing.
Paul spent many years on the stage playing roles as diverse as Arvide Abenathy (Guys & Dolls) and Monsieur Le Clerc (‘Allo ‘Allo). He has also worked with many musical and theatrical societies in and around Southendon-Sea. The choir performs songs from traditional musicals including Les Miserables, A Chorus Line, Phantom of the Opera, The Lion King and Jersey Boys. It also covers more modern ‘jukebox’ musicals so you may hear them singing anything from Cole Porter to Tina Turner and Queen to Abba. The Show Choir performs
in local theatres and churches in and around Essex and most of their shows are in aid of charity. The choir members are said to be very excited to be visiting Torrevieja. Steve’s original vision for the choir was for it to have over 100 members and to be able to perform at a local theatre. He said he is delighted to have exceeded those expectations. Paul said: “A lot of these groups have a very high standard and whilst we strive to get a great standard from The Show Choir, we are a lot more relaxed and like to keep things very simple. Music is therapy for me.”

Walk of Life THE Pink Ladies are set to hold their next Walk for Life at the Playa Flamenca in Orihuela on Saturday June 2 in aid of a cancer charity. Maria and the Pink Ladies are celebrating their 10th anniversary. The five-kilometre stroll is set to be held to mark it, with funds raised going to Spanish Association against Cancer (AECC). Live music is set to take place throughout the day: There is also set to be an on-site bar, a hog roast and burger bar. Registration for the walk costs â‚Ź5, with all proceeds going to the AECC. Walkers also get an official t-shirt, donated by the Spain Property Shop, and a bottle of water from Evolution. Call in to the AECC office at Playa Flamenca or the Spain Property Shop to register. Registration is also available on the day at the venue from 9.30am onwards. The walk will begin at 10.30am.

Railway exhibit THIS week is the last chance to see an exhibition about a British man who built a well-known railway network and bridge in Aguilas. The exhibition showcases the life of engineer and photographer Gustavo Gillman. It is being held at the town’s Auditoria Infanta Elena. Gillman was born in London in 1856 and came to Spain to work for the Great Southern Spanish Railway Company. While working there he built the railway network linking Aguilas, Lorca and Baza in Granada. Gillman was behind the Embarcadero del Honrillo railway pier which still stands in Aguilas. The pier was built so raw materials mined from further inland could be brought to waiting ships and exported overseas. Gillman took several photographs while living and working in Spain. His pictures of daily life towards the end of the 19th century form part of the exhibition which is open between 6pm and 9pm ends on Sunday May 12.

government, which wants 150,000 new homes built a year. The number of homes built in 2018 was just over 100,000. However, despite the year-

on-year increase, the number of new build permits fell slightly from the 9,306 homes approved in January, although that was 39 per cent more than in the same month of 2018.
Despite these increases there are few fears that the construction sector is anywhere near overheating as it did in the lead up to the financial crisis. The 100,000 new licences approved last year were eight times fewer than those granted in 2006, when a record 865,561 permits were given. In addition, there was a 21.7 per cent rise in the number of permits given for reformation of older housing in the month compared to February 2018, showing an increased willingness to invest in property. However, new flats being built are getting smaller. Rising property prices per square metre would appear to be encouraging developers to reduce sizes to keep apartments affordable. In February 2018 the average new build licence was for 116.4sqm compared to 108.9sqm this past February.

IT is always worth trying to negotiate the price when buying a property with latest figures showing 62 per cent of buyers said they managed to get a reduction. According to Spanish property portal Fotocasa the average saving was €11,800 over the asking price. Slightly puzzlingly, some 69 per cent of sellers said they had given an average €14,200 reduction, with the difference attributed to a quirk of the survey methodology. In both cases the reduction was around 10 per cent of the original asking price. But as the property market continues to rise, the number of reductions negotiated last year fell compared to the 73 per cent reported by buyers in 2017. The survey concluded that although prices are rising, demand remains high enough to not just absorb these increases, but also to keep the market driving forward. When it came to buyers, 74 per cent of house hunters said high prices were a problem, with 47 per cent saying the poor condition of homes was

THE price of second-hand housing in Spain rose 8.4 per cent in the 12 months up to the end of March. This was the biggest annual increase since the 2007 height of the property boom. Across Spain the average price of a used home is €1,900/sqm, a figure last seen in November 2012, when the figure stood at €1,906/sqm. “The price of second-hand housing continues to recover some of the ground lost during the crisis, although at very different rates. Madrid and the islands continue to concentrate the largest increases, although prices are still far from the peaks of the boom years except in the case of the Balearic Islands, where the average price is already only 5 per cent below the levels reached in 2007. In the rest of the country, a secondhand home is 35.6 per cent cheaper than 12 years ago and there are regions such as Navarra, Aragon or Castilla La Mancha where the difference is around 50 per cent,” explained Beatriz Toribio, director of studies at property portal Fotocasa. At an interannual level, the price of housing increased in 16 of the 17 Autonomous Communities. Three of them experienced two-digit interannual increases: Madrid (19 per cent), Baleares (12.5 per cent) and Canarias (11.8 per cent). At the other extreme, Asturias was the only community that experienced interannual falls in the first quarter, specifically falling 0.03 per cent. The price of housing in Spain reached an all-time high in April 2007 with a value of €2,952/sqm, 35.6 per cent higher than the present price.

GERMAN carmaker Porsche has taken further steps to becoming carbon neutral after launching two new cogeneration machines at its Stuttgart-Zuffenhausen factory. The carmaker said the machines, which have an output of two
megawatts each, run exclusively on biogas and organic waste. They provide heat and hot w a t e r f o r t h e o ff i c e o n the site which employs almost 12,000 people. The installation of the machines come as Porsche recently replaced natural gas generators for

AS the F1 roadshow rolls into Spain, many are asking the question will Ferrari be able to catch Mercedes, who have taken first and second in the first four races of the season. But that may be overlooking Red Bull, (racing as Aston Martin Red Bull) who despite being off the pace this season are looking to get back in the mix. Much attention has been focussed on their Honda engine, but the team admits they have not got their aerodynamics right. CRISTIANO RONALDO has somewhat bizarrely said that his decision to open a hair clinic in Madrid is his way of thanking ‘the people who love me.’ The 34-year-old superstar now plays in Italy for Juventus but spent the best part of a decade at Real Madrid. He opened the implant clinic in March. Good challenge FRENCHMAN Antoine Rozner played the back nine in five under par to win the 2019 Challenge de España title by four shots at Izki Golf (Basque Country). He had started the day three strokes behind overnight leader Sebastian Garcia Rodriguez, but brushed the challenge aside by gaining five shots in just four holes in a blemish-free round of a six under par 66 in the European Challenge Tour event. The 26-year-old started well with a birdie on the first before carding 11 consecutive pars. Rozner made his move with birdies on the 13th, 14th and 16th, with the highlight of his day being holing out from 123 yards for an eagle on the 15th. After the event he said: “The victory will bring me confidence. It puts me in a good position in the rankings. It’s going to be a long season, so I’ll keep playing tournament after tournament, fighting to the end, and hopefully get a European Tour card.”
