Helicopter search for missing DJ By Karl Smallman THE family of Rem Kingston, 31, a DJ who went missing on a ferry in Spain on March 22 have appealed for the public’s help as they intensify their search to find him. They have set up a crowdfunding page with a £10,000 target to raise money for a private helicopter search that has, so far, proved fruitless. And at the time of going to press, €9,594 had been pledged. The pilot has donated his time free of charge. Rem was last seen on the Hypatia de Alejandria ferry as it travelled between Ibiza and Mallorca. “Spanish police have been extremely helpful,” say the family, adding: “However their resources and time are limited, so we are trying to raise funds to continue the search for Rem in every way we can. PP loses out in Balearics THE results of the General Election in the Balearics generally followed the overall voting throughout the rest of Spain with the PSOE (PSIB in the Balearics) taking the lead and the PP dropping dramatically. The Socialists won three seats (up from just two at the last election) with Podemos holding their vote and keeping two seats. The centre right Ciudadanos has now become the most popular of the ‘right wing’ parties whilst the previous main group the Partido Popular dropped two seats to leave them with just one. Although not perhaps performing as strongly as some thought they might, the recently formed Vox party which es-

CITY DAY: Spain marks Madrid Day today (Thursday).
Capital celebrates THIS picture of Madrid City Hall comes as the Spanish capital and the surrounding region celebrates its annual holiday today (Thursday). Madrid City has a population of almost 3.3 million while its metropolitan area has one of roughly 6.5 million. It is the third-largest city in Europe after London and Berlin. The city, which covers an area of more than 604 square kilometres, was named the 10th most liveable in the world by Monocle magazine in 2017.
It is the seat of government and the royal family and is home to two of the country’s most popular football teams, Real and Atletico Madrid. The city was founded sometime in the 9th century and the first documented reference to it comes from a Moorish source while Spain was under Muslim rule. Its original Arabic name, Majrit, comes from a fortress built on the Manzanares River. The city was conquered by the Christian Kingdom of Castile in
1085. In following centuries rulers and officials met in Madrid more often before King Philip II established the royal court there in 1561, making the city the de facto capital. Madrid grew into a modern city in the 18th and 19th century and was named explicitly as the Spanish capital in the 1931 Constitution of the Second Republic. The day of the holiday, May 2, marks the anniversary of an uprising staged by Madrid residents against the occupying French forces of Napoleon in 1808.

Sex trafficking plan THE president of the Balearic Islands has announced a new plan to combat people trafficking. The document, aimed specifically at tackling trafficking of women and girls for the purposes of prostitution, has been drafted over the last few months in coordination between several bodies. The plan proposes 60 measures to fulfil 12 objectives in cracking down on the issues, including improving detection, prevention, in-

President Francina Armengol said it was also important to look into the full reality of people trafficking on the Balearic Islands, as well as to provide tools to help women who have been victims of it. Forest fire risk up FIRE services in the Balearics are warning the beginning of May marks the start of the forest fire high risk season. Until October 15 no fires are allowed on or within 500 metres of forest land on the Balearic Islands, except for those who have special administrative authorisation. Since April 15, fire authorities have been putting in place measures to tackle potential blazes after lower winter rain-

So far this year, there have been 36 forest fires in the Balearics, affecting 14.97 hectares, compared to the 20 incidents and 3.08 hectares affected during the same period in 2018. Council evicts squatters OFFICERS this week evicted several families ‘squatting’ in flats on an urbanisation in Son Guells, following ‘hundreds’ of complaints from neighbours. The land behind the Balearic Stadium and close to the road to Manacor is council owned and notices were reportedly served days earlier. After the evictions, Local Police closed access to the properties with chains and boarded up the doors and windows. For the last two years, about five families of 20 people have reportedly taken over three floors and two sales offices in one of the buildings at the complex. The eviction process began in January of last year. Before the evictions, technicians from the council’s welfare department contacted the families to offer alternatives, but according to council sources, no help was requested. The squatters have had electricity and water connections from public roads, but no sewage, so the excrements have been accumulating under the houses, leading to months of complaints from neighbours. dents had to pick up their mail from the nearest post office. This was in breach of the principles, requirements and conditions agreed for the universal postal service. The CNMC said that, as a general rule, ordinary postal deliveries must be made in the mailbox of each dwelling. Only in specific circumstances laid out in the regulations can it be delivered elsewhere. Correos has two months to appeal.

Cleaning service slammed PALMA residents have rated their municipal services with 47 per cent overall satisfaction t hi s year, ni ne points less than in 2018 and 10 points below the national average. This is according to the results of the Public Services Satisfaction Barometer III the Observatory of Urban Services (OSUR). In a statement issued on Tuesday, OSUR has also reported that the number of people actually dissatisfied with municipal services has risen from 24 to 31 per cent year-on-year. OSUR general director, Ramiro Aurin, claims this is due to the fact there is ‘a lot of ideology and little management’ in the Mallorca capital, since the city, in his opinion, ‘takes another step back.’ The wat er suppl y m anaged to improve its score compared to last year going from 58 to 63 per cent satisfaction, although it is also below the Spanish average, whi ch st ands at 75 per cent. Meanwhile street cleaning obtained just 22 per cent satisfaction, 15 points below the national average.
Making a splash THE Balearic Group of Ornithology and Defence of Nature (GOB Mallorca) is calling for the immediate withdrawal of the pool, terraces and kiosk at the Hotel Mar y Paz in Can Picafort to return the site to its natural state. Last week, the press reported on a project promoted by the city of Santa Margarita with the intention of replacing the pool with other types of attractions, while other civic voices were in support of keeping things the way they are.

Pollensa housing problems POLLENSA is at risk of running out of social housing by 2037, according to new reports. 10-metre fall A 53-YEAR-OLD German woman fell down a slope at Cala Pi in Llucmajor. She was reportedly on a walk when she slipped and fell about 10 metres into the depths suffering an open head wound and multiple bruises last Monday. Coordinating with the 112 service, the Guardia Civil mountain rescue team and the local fire service transported the woman to the coast where a Guardia Civil rescue helicopter was waiting to take her to the Son Espases hospital. She is reported to have been in a serious condition when admitted to hospital.
‘Drug death’ dealers arrested THE National Police in Ferreries, Menorca, have arrested two men on suspicion of supplying drugs to a young man who later died. The suspects are accused of drug trafficking and reckless manslaughter after the victim allegedly died of a heart attack just hours after taking the narcotics. Police claim at properties supposedly connected to the suspects they seized 23 pills similar to those allegedly taken by the man before his death, as well as 20 grams of a powdered drug.

Poeta Guillem Colom. Neighbours, who later returned to their homes, were moved to the roof of the apartment block while firemen handled the situation. The men are believed to responsible for causing damage worth â‚Ź100,000. Investigators discovered eight
lighters and two five-litre cans with flammable material, in one of individual’s homes. The offenders could also be charged with a further two incidents which took place in the last few months. Despite the recent arrests, investigations into the string of fires reported will continue.

Bar brawl A 17-YEAR-OLD boy has been seriously injured following a brawl at a nightclub in San Sebastian. Seven people have been arrested in connection with the alleged fight, which reportedly left a further two people with minor in-
juries. The brawl is said to have taken place at 5am on Friday morning on a public road. Health workers were forced to perform CPR on the 17-year-old, resuscitating him before transferring him to the Donostia Hospital.

Killer fire man jailed A MAN held to be responsible for starting one of the fires that burned out of control in Galicia in 2017 killing four people has been jailed for nine months. Miguel Ángel MN, is the first of three men arrested after the forest fires that devastated nearly 50,000 hectares to be tried. As well as the jail sentence he was ordered to pay €1,620 by the Provincial Court of Ourense who decided he was guilty of serious negligence rather than arson. The defendant maintained he was holding a BBQ, saying “I was roasting chorizos, I am not an arsonist.”
ABUSE OF POWER: Police have arrested a doctor after sexual abuse reports.
Patient ‘abuse’ A DOCTOR in Valencia has been arrested on suspicion of abusing four patients. The 60-year-old Spanish man has been accused of inappropriately touching and flirting with several women in the town of Alfafar. Police began investigating after a woman claimed
her family doctor had begun hugging, kissing and touching her during a consultation. She alleged it was not the first time he had tried to do this. Following her complaint, officers began interviewing several other possible victims, including women aged between 40 and 70 years old.

Measles outbreak HEALTH experts are warning measles cases have risen by more than 300 per cent because more children are not receiving a vaccine. The World Health Organisation (WHO) claimed more than 20 million children worldwide are not being given the life-saving inoculation each year, declaring the issue a ‘public emergency.’ The WHO said decreased inoculation rates mean collective immunity the concept where a disease is almost eradicated if a high enough proportion of people receive a vaccine, normally 95 per cent - is beginning to fail. UNICEF reported around 169 million children did not receive the first part of the innoculation - which comes in two phases - between 2010 and 2017. The number of cases of measles worldwide in the first three months of 2019 has since reached more than 110,000, almost a 300 per cent increase on the same period last year.

Men arrested for ‘express kidnapping’ THREE men have been arrested by the Guardia Civil for carrying out an ‘express kidnapping’ in Toledo. The offenders, two of them father and son, threatened, bound and beat the victim who had set up a meeting to show an individual a piece of land which was on the market for sale. The offenders called the victim’s father giving him 20 minutes to pay €300,000 in exchange for his son’s release.
As the father reportedly could not raise enough money in such a short space of time, the beaten victim was dumped at an underpass. After further police investigations, the trio were individually detained in Mora, Ciudad Real and Telo and have been placed in the hands of the Court of Instruction number two of Orgaz.

Victory for Pedro Sanchez and PSOE By Linda Hall THE pollsters had it right and with 99.9 per cent votes counted at the time of going to press, the PSOE were the most-voted party on Sunday. The socialists headed by the current president Pedro Sanchez won 123 seats in the national parliament but will need pacts with other parties to govern. The Partido Popular, the PSOE’s closest rivals lagged further behind than expected with 66 seats and the party under Pablo Casado suffered its worst-ever defeat. His hard-hitting, far-right strategy backfired and the PP’s showing in Cataluña was abysmal, taking just one seat in Madrid and none in the Basque Region. Ciudadanos and Albert Rivera did better by poaching enough PP voters to win 57 seats, but did not manage to

the party that every other party feared for different reasons enters the national parliament for the first time with 24 seats although Santiago Abascal had hoped to win twice that. The Esquerra Republicana de Catalunya (ERC) pro-independence party doubled their seats in the national parliament to 15, while PNV and Bildu in the Basque Region also gained seats. There was a record turnout of almost 76 per cent, nine percentage points more than in the 2016 general election. It is already clear that the PP, Cs and Vox cannot repeat their Andalucia coalition and Albert Rivera ruled out a postelection alliance with the PSOE weeks ago. Pedro Sanchez must now look Left to form a government and woo the nationalists, possibly including ERC, to obtain the 176 seats he needs to govern.
PSOE and what they stand for PSOE are the oldest and arguably the most successful political party in Spain, having been in power for a longer time than any other party since the demise of the Franco dictatorship. PSOE (Partido Socialista Obrero Español) which translates as ‘The Spanish Socialist Workers Party’ is far removed from the British Socialist Workers party, having abandoned Marxist ideology in the 1980s. It now describes itself as ‘social democratic, centre-left and progressive.’ The leader of this party is Pedro Sanchez, 47, who became Prime Minister of Spain after the no-confidence vote in the previous government of conservative Mariano Rajoy in 2018. The major policies of POSE are: * Pro-European and further European integration. From May 1, Spain will hold the Presidency of the EU. * To introduce a fairer and more equitable system of taxation. * To create jobs - already policies are going ahead with the release of funds for major infrastructure spending projects as well as housing. * A review of spending to the regions, ensuring equality across the country. * Ensuring the rights of pensioners, the disabled, individuals from the ‘LGBTI’ communities, families and women, with a special emphasis on tackling racism. * Increasing spending in and improving the quality of education, especially in the sciences and to promote digital developments. * Developing health services to make Spain a worldwide leader in the field. * The urgent eradication of poverty. * Advancing consumer rights. * To develop policies to counter rural depopulation and develop opportunities in those affected areas.

There are lots of things to consider, and we are here to help try to make the transition and life in Spain a little easier by compiling a series of helpful facts and figures relating to a variety of topics.
IN simple words, the padron is a local certificate that you are given when you register at your town hall. In Spanish it is called ‘certificado de empadronamiento,’ and helps compile a list of those people who live in a municipality. The padron is used by the government and local authorities to keep a ‘head count’ on how many people live in the area, and as such receive financial assistance in the form of subsidies and grants from provincial, regional and central authorities for the provision of services.
Prison terms for insulting lesbians THE Barcelona High Court confirmed six-month prison sentences for two
men who insulted and attacked two lesbians for kissing in public.
They were in a café in central Barcelona when the two men rebuked them for kissing and then flashed their testicles at them. “ L i s t e n , y o u c a n ’t k i s s each other in public,” they told their victims, while one of the men also punched one of the women. This prompted the judges who tried the case to class the incident as hate crime as well as causing bodily harm. They also gave weight to the evidence of one of the w ome n w hic h the y de s c ribe d a s “ firm, s e rious and without contradictions.” Her ‘courage and determination’ had made it possible to identify the aggressors, the judges commented, because she ran out of the café after them and succeeded in retaining one until the police arrived.
Anyone who lives for more than six months in Spain is required to register on the padron. However, the certificate itself only lasts for a limited period of time, and must be renewed. A handy website is: www.spanishsolutions.net/of ficial-documents-in-spain/padron To register on the padron you need: Your passport, Your NIE or residence certificate, The deeds to your house or a copy of your rental agreement, A recent utility bill in your name. To add someone onto your padron, as it must contain all occupants, you will need: • Title deeds of the property, • The passports of both parties, and copies, • A utility bill, • Both certificates of residence, • Rental agreement (if renting and not residing with owner). Since you need the padron certificate to become a Spanish resident, but you cannot give the padron office your residency until you apply for it, the padron offices usually give a set period to return and present your Spanish residency. In the Alicante Province, for example, it’s three months. To find out more, visit: www.gov.uk/guidance-requirements-in-spain. Padron holders have the right to vote in local elections. Residents who can demonstrate a specified time on the padron, can also receive benefits or a cash grant when getting married to another resident, or could qualify for financial assistance for any children born in Spain. The traffic department of Spain, require a padron to register a car in your own name, to import a car from another country, to qualify for a Spanish driver’s licence, and in some cases to purchase mobile phones or electrical goods. THE Brexit deadline was pushed to the end of October and with the Easter break following immediately after, there was little to move the pound ahead of the bank holiday. The data available were not stellar enough to have any impact. Headline inflation came in below forecast at 1.9%. Government borrowing still failed to match last month’s forecast. In addition, the rumblings of a leadership challenge for the PM and stalemate in the cross party talks over Brexit cast a shadow and the pound trended lower, even after the leadership challenge was ruled out. It’s likely Brexit will resume its place as the primary influencing factor on the pound and investors will be looking for positive progress. A smaller than expected fall in industrial output across Europe had a positive effect on the euro, as did the news that inflation was holding steady at 1%. However, the European Central Bank remains cautious and this seems to be reflected in the numbers.
German business confidence was lower on the month and below forecast, and at 44.5 the German manufacturing PMI fell within the contraction zone and caused some concern. The picture was similar across Europe, with numbers coming in weaker than expected and the euro lost out to the US dollar and the pound in such challenging circumstances. While many central banks across the world seek to put a halt to the cycle of increasing interest rates, the US Federal Reserve’s 2.252.5% benchmark interest rate stands out and is having an impact on the dollar. In addition, retail sales increased by 1.6% in March, almost twice as much as forecast. Additional numbers brought a mixed picture; the main response from the market came from the prospect of fresh agreements with China, which will be announced in May. Core inflation increased to 1.6% in Canada and the Bank of Canada kept its rates unchanged at 1.75%. This caused the Canadian

Wholesale sales went up by 0.3%, comfortably beating the expected 0.1% increase. Reserve Bank of Australia cited several concerns after the April policy meeting, specifically looking at the various obstacles to growth, coupled with continued low inflation,
signposting an imminent decrease in the cash rate. Inflation dropped to 1.3% in Q1, against a forecast rise of 0.2%. However, strong retail sales from China, as Australia’s biggest export customer, gave the Aussie a boost, and a possible end to the USChina trade war was also good news, but the overall picture saw the Australian dollar struggle to gain any ground. In New Zealand, prices rose by just 0.1% in the first quarter, against a forecast of 0.3%. That meant a 1.5% inflation rate which undershot the forecast 1.7%, possibly opening the way to a rate cut by the Reserve Bank of New Zealand. Trade figures for March were a billion dollars higher on the month, resulting in a $922 million trade surplus. This caused the New Zealand dollar to break free from its Australian cousin and regain many of its earlier losses.

Water cost of climate change
WATER TRANSFER: An aqueduct in Carrascosa del Campo (Cuenca). CLIMATE change will cause the Iberian Peninsula to suffer more and more water shortages, at a serious financial cost. At the moment much of Spain’s agriculture, industry and population relies on a transfer of water between the Tagus and Segura water catchment basins, But a new study on climate change effects on the TagusSegura transfer forecasts that by the year 2070 it will not be possible to transfer water, if present projections are fulfilled. Since 1979, the Segura basin
has been receiving water from the Tagus River, the longest in the Iberian Peninsula, thanks to one of the largest engineering hydraulic works in Spain. Forty years later, the flow transferred is increasingly scarce due to a factor which was not taken into account at the time of construction; climate change. Scarcer rainfall and rising temperatures will cause major fluvial alterations, especially in rivers which depend on groundwater discharges and snow thawing. ‘In recent years, transfers to
the Segura river basin from the headwaters of the Tagus have been much lower than planned. ‘Instead of the theoretical 540 hm3/year which should arrive, there have been flows into the Segura river basin of about 365 hm3/year on average,’ according to a study published in the journal Hydrology and Earth System Sciences. Lead authors Francisco Pellicer and José Miguel Martínez Paz say that direct economic losses of between €380 million and €425 million a year can be expected and the river basin would be destroyed.
No light touch RETIRED engineer Antonio Moreno Alfaro has accused Endesa of overcharging consumers almost €11 million since 2010. The power company charged users an extra 33 cents a month although not all were integrated into its remote- controlled meterreading network, the 75-year-old maintained. Consumers’ association Facua made - and won - a similar case in 2014, where Endesa had to return €1.39 million and pay a €400,000 fine. Moreno worked for an electricity meter company, but was sacked when he was 51
because he refused to take part in what he called’dirty business.’ Since then he spends much of his time uncovering irregularities in electricity bills and has accused ministers and denounced ex-presidents of the government, sometimes winning and sometimes losing. The engineer now wants the Junta to cancel the Facua verdict and seize €10.8 million from Endesa while increasing the fine to between €48 and €480 million, as the courts only obliged the company to return what was overcharged in 2014.
Hate crime
A PROSECUTOR at a murder trial over the death of a four-year-old claimed the girl was killed because of the accused’s ‘hatred of Romanians.’ The lawyer claimed Sara was abused and
killed in Valladolid in 2017 because her mother ’s boyfriend hated foreigners, particularly Romanians.
Roberto Hernandez is also accused of raping Sara, whose father is Romanian. The victim’s mother also faces life imprisonment for failing to prevent her abuse and death.

BREXIT BRIEF Second referendum debate reignited THE publicity surrounding Britain’s two new political parties and their European election campaigns has reignited the debate about a second referendum. The two groups, Change UK and the Brexit Party, have both set out their stalls on completely opposing ends of the political spectrum. Change UK has labelled itself as the ‘natural home of the remain alliance,’ while the Brexit Party is squarely behind leaving the European Union. Some commentators said the stark difference between the two parties could turn the European elections into ‘another vote on Brexit, with two very clear options.’ British journalist Thomas Hunt told podcast Brexit: The Final Countdown: ‘I actually think the whole ‘second referendum, we need another vote on Brexit,’ this is it.’ He added: ‘No- one is voting for their local leisure centre to get EU funded, this is down purely to Brexit, Remain or Leave, it’s the exact same.’ Meanwhile, Liberal Democrat leader Vince Cable was met with booing and shouts by the Question Time audience after he suggested a second referendum was the only way to, ‘lance the boil of Brexit.’
Farage sets sights on general election By Joe Gerrard NIGEL FARAGE has ruffled feathers in the Conservative and Labour parties after confirming his newly-formed Brexit Party will stand at the next general election. Rather than simply fielding candidates at next month’s European Parliament elections, the former UKIP leader said he now wants to use the opportunity as a ‘springboard,’ for ‘massive change’ in UK politics. According to several polls, Farage’s party already looks sets to make large gains at the EU elections, with many former Conservative and Labour supporters pledging to switch allegiance to his Brexit Party. The politician’s latest announcement that his party will also stand at the next general election could see Britain’s current political landscape dramatically altered. Farage, who said he made his return to politics because he does not believe parliament intends to follow through with Brexit, claimed he hoped his new party would put pressure on MPs to leave the European Union by October 31. He told British media: “We want the European election to be the first step of a massive change which entirely resets British politics. “MPs will realise that if they carry on trying to stop Brexit, they’ll lose their seats at the next general elec-

Agency assesses Telepizza bonds TWO ratings agencies have rated bonds offered by Spanish fast food chain Telepizza at B and B2, saying they are junk offerings, but stable. S&P Global and Moody’s said the €335 million debt auction from the company was positive if the company could carry out its ‘challenging’ business plan. It comes as the company is offering high-yield bonds with a seven-year maturity to refinance a debt restricting programme. They also follow Telepizza plans to take over several Spanish Pizza Hut stores.

Bank to revisit worker payout
Deficit fall on course SPAIN is currently set to exit an EU public spending scheme launched after the eurozone crisis after Brussels revised figures for Madrid’s annual deficit down. The EU’s Eurostat statistics agency revised down Spain’s estimated 2018 budget deficit as a percentage of economic output (GDP) to 2.48 per cent from the 2.63 per cent previously stated. That means Spain could leave Brussels’ Excessive Deficit Procedure as early as June this year if the financial and economic outlook does not change drastically in the coming months.
By Joe Gerrard The revised figures come as the government previously posted deficit figures of 2.63 per cent. Economy Minister Nadia Calviño said at the time that the fall from 3.1 per cent in 2017 came from increases in tax receipts despite higher government spending. Calviño added Spain would not be on course to meet targets for deficit reduction set by the previous conservative Partido Popular (PP) government. That administration wanted to cut spending to bring the deficit down to 2.2 per cent of GDP in 2018.
Spain entered the Excessive Deficit Procedure in 2011 during the eurozone debt crisis. It saw Brussels attempt to impose spending restrictions on Madrid as well as Greece, Ireland and Portugal. It requires member states to keep budget deficits below 3 per cent of GDP and national debt beneath 60 per cent of GDP. Spain’s national debt as a percentage of GDP stood at more than 97 per cent last year, according to Eurostat. IMF forecasts released earlier this month predicted Spain’s deficit would remain below 3 per cent of GDP until at least 2024.
MANAGERS of CaixaBank have agreed to look into increasing payoffs for workers recently laid off after unions claimed they were ‘extremely insufficient’. The bank and the USO union have been in talks over the compensation after managers announced plans to cut branches by 18 per cent, affecting around 2,157 workers. The union has asked the bank to increase payouts and to ensure workers who opt to transfer to different branches are adequately compensated. Previous plans would have seen staff aged under 53 paid redundancies worth 40 days per year worked.

Survey finds debt optimism ALMOST half of Spanish debtors think their financial situation will improve, and more than one in 10 believe it will get worse in the coming years, a study has found. The Kruk Group lending broker study also found the percentage of people who did not have outstanding debts who were optimistic about their financial futures stood at 36 per cent.
Around two-thirds of survey respondents not making payments said having debt is a problem which must be dealt with as soon as possible. The equivalent figure for those in debt was 51 per cent, the study found. About 9 per cent of people not in debt had savings equivalent to three years worth of income. The survey found telephone and internet bills were the least urgent payments to make.

Pound GBP/EUR: Down from €1.16 to €1.15 GBP/USD: Down from $1.32 to $1.30 The pound had a volatile start to February, fluctuating against currencies like the euro and the US dollar as April 12 - the UK’s revised deadline for leaving the EU - approached. A series of failed votes and stalled talks undermined hopes that a deal would be struck in time, and some feared that the UK would crash out of the EU without a deal. However, the UK was granted a flexible extension, with the possibility of staying in the EU until October 31. This development stopped the pound tumbling, but concerns about the impact of more months of uncertainty saw Sterling struggle as Easter approached.

Currency outlook: Brexit chaos calms, GBP/EUR edges lower
UNCERTAINTY: Recent Brexit news saw the pound continue to struggle. News that talks between Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn and Prime Minister Theresa May had stalled, also kept the pound
under pressure. At this stage it would take a significant Brexit development or seriously impressive UK data to
give the pound a boost. Euro EUR/GBP: Up from £0.85 to £0.86
EUR/USD: Down from $1.14 to $1.12 Although a dovish policy outlook from the European Central Bank (ECB) and mixed ecostats for the Eurozone have prevented the euro from shining against the US dollar in the last four weeks, the common currency has managed to edge higher against the pound. EUR/GBP has risen slightly in the wake of the EU granting the UK another Brexit extension, and the euro could extend these gains in the weeks ahead if the prospect of a deal being reached before the EU elections remains unlikely. Other news to look out for includes the ECB’s monthly bulletin, the EU Commission’s economic forecasts and Eurozone inflation data.

LEAPY LEE SAYS IT OTHERS THINK IT JUST how much more of this one-sided, socalled diversity claptrap are we intended to put up with? This latest announcement, sanctioned and approved by the Lord Mayor of London (surprise surprise), is not only an insult to the intelligence of the beleaguered local British populace, but just about as far from integration and harmonious diversity as you can get. Apparently the North London Muslim Housing Association, (Yep), who actually go to great pains to advertise that they build and provide accommodation for all denominations and cultures, intends to build a London enclave of houses for Muslim occupation only. Apparently this company is fully endorsed by the GLC, who have already donated almost two million pounds to its coffers, and you can be certain if Mayor Khan has his way, are no doubt poised to pour in even more. Just how naïve do these people think (or not even care) the local populace actually is? Just consider the outcry there would be if a UK construction company announced it was building an estate to house only English or white practising Christians, or in fact any religion other than Muslim. There would be condemnations in the media, questions in the House, rioting in the streets and possible legal proceedings in the courts. Instead of that, this whole unsavoury scheme

SADIQ KHAN: Mayor of London. has been conducted in virtual silence and secrecy. It only came to my attention from one of my column correspondents, (thanks for that). The whole project is an arrogant affront to our British culture and heritage. It can only evoke suspicion,
fear and isolation. No doubt these areas will become no-go areas for non-Muslims and be conducted under the laws of Sharia. This and any other areas like it are a blight on our society. They are like cancers growing within
the very heart of British freedom and democracy and if allowed to continue will one day envelope the whole country. This one-sided appeasement and intentional segregation of a religion and culture, which the British public is trying so hard and patiently to nurture and understand, is nothing short of disgraceful, and both Mayor Khan and indeed anyone who condones these housing developments should be thoroughly ashamed and indeed brought up in front of the authorities to explain their actions, which are in the very least racist, and certainly in no way constructive to the UK’s endeavours to instill diversity and integration into the British way of life. Well, I wouldn’t hold yer breath. After all when you compare the outpouring of grief at the NZ mosque attack to the relatively lukewarm reaction from both the snowflakes and authorities to the Sri Lanka atrocities, I think you get some idea of how the land is beginning to lie. In fact, had some of the tragic victims in the latter attack not been British; it would probably have been old news after a couple of days! It would if the BBC had had anything to do with it anyway. TECH FOR THE TIMID ALL hail the arrival of flexible phones. Now all their inventors need to do is find consumers gullible enough to spend two grand on them. Earlier this year Samsung, Huawei and several also-rans unveiled their fancy new folding phones to a market frenzied with apathy. Why in Edison’s name would anyone actually want one? The cynical answer: because in a smartphone market struggling to overcome stalled innovation and the vanilla blandness of one glass slab after another, manufacturers are desperate to introduce The Next Big Thing. Big the folding phones certainly are. Instant candidates for a WeightWatchers course, some are double the thickness and heft of a standard phone as well as being double the price. It’s actually cheaper to buy two complete phones and use them alongside each other, but just like owning one of these fancy new Siamese-twinned phones, why would you? Open up the clunky device and

BEND IT LIKE BECKHAM: World’s first foldable phone, from Royole. voila, you’ve got an eight-inch tablet-sized screen. One model needs dual batteries to handle the extra power drain. Back in my formative years I opened my copy of Catcher in the Rye so many times the cover broke. Wouldn’t the new folding phone suffer the same fate? Not at all, say the producers; the hinge is guaranteed for ‘tens of thou-
sands’ of foldings, thanks to innovative thin and durable polymer screens and an ingenious mechanism with multiple interlocking gears hidden in the enclosure. It all smacks of overkill. And should we really buy the hype, given that we actually had folding phones way back in 2009? That’s when those peskily awkward flip phones were the absolute height of chic with
their clamshell designs. True nerds (I plead guilty) went the whole hog and bought Nokia’s monstrous Communicator phone with its complete foldout keyboard; in essence a computer you hoisted to your ear and about as practical as a chocolate teapot. Flip phone users had endless tales to tell, from hitting the external internet button by mistake and then having to pay for expensive data during the subsequent scramble to open the phone and find the kill command, to the unrivalled satisfaction of being able to slam the phone shut on a bad conversation. With the new folding phones due on sale in Europe shortly (some at an eye-watering €2,000 or more) who can say whether they are the future for anyone other than early adopters desperate to impress. But hey, if you really want a folding phone right now there’s actually a cheaper way. Just sit on your existing phone.

5G or not 5G THERE are only two real smartphone innovations on the horizon to part us from our cash, and folding phones are one. 5G is the other; the new superfast worldwide mobile data standard. B u t r i g h t n o w i t ’s s t i l l more hype than happening. 5G is touted as the driver of the ‘Internet of Things’; enabling all of our connected devices to ‘talk’ to each other untouched by the human hand. Perhaps more importantly, it’s the technology needed to really make driverless cars work, as your Audi negotiates wirelessly at 120km/h with an adjacent Tesla to duke out which one owns the fast lane. I n re a l i t y f o r l o a d s o f u s r i g h t n o w, 5 G o r n o t 5G is not the question, given that we can barely get 3G. On a good day.

Carbon monoxide IT was good news to hear that the family of the poor man who died from carbon monoxide poisoning while on holiday in Cantabria has now received compensation for the tragic accident. I was surprised but pleased to hear that the case had settled so quickly and hopefully his relatives can now begin to heal. The case does raise the wider issue of carbon monoxide risk, however, and serves as a good reminder to us all to install carbon monoxide and smoke detectors in our homes. I personally also like to make sure a professional checks my boiler regularly. Arthur Drake
Citizen Sarah THE news that Sarah Almagro Vallejo has been given honorary citizenship of Marbella brought a tear to my eye. I cannot imagine how much this young woman’s life has changed since she lost all her limbs to septicaemia last year, but she continues to carry herself with such courage and optimism. I was delighted to read that local politicians have now recognised her bravery. It was also good to read that thanks to fundraising efforts, Sarah has now received prosthetic hands, and will soon receive prosthetic feet. I hope locals continue to be generous in supporting this inspiring girl. Mrs G Halls
Suicide stopped I WAS saddened to read about the teenage girl who a taxi driver reportedly prevented from killing herself in Marbella. While I am of course delighted to hear t h a t t h e g i r l w as ta lk ed down from the bridge and taken to hospital, it was shocking to hear that s h e wa s sa i d t o h a v e b ee n brought to that state because of bullying. With the rise of social media I believe the issue of teenage bullying is becoming worse. It was bad enough when I was at school, but now it seems to be that with computers it does not stop once you get home. Mr Charles James
Cancelled passport I LIVE here in Spain and work in Moscow. Recently I was coming home from Moscow via Eindhoven and the Dutch police refused me entry because Malaga Consulate had cancelled my current valid Passport. I applied on April 4 to have my old passport cancelled as I had lost it. Instead Malaga Consulate cancelled my valid passport. I was left in Eindhoven airport police station with no help from anyone in the UK Consulate. Nobody on any of the socalled Helplines answered the phone - and it took one hour 45 minutes to get any response on an Online Chat Helpline UK Gov use. When I got a response it was to say that they could
REFUSED ENTRY: Valid passport cancelled. not guarantee to ‘reverse the cancellation notice you provided.’ So now, because they cancelled the wrong passport - the one I told them (in the letter that accompanied the request) that I could not be without - hence applying by post. So they took my request, went away, found my other passport number and

cancelled that and now refuse to correct their mistake. And people should be aware that the passport people can cancel your passport at any time and you have no recourse, no help, nobody available from UK Gov to help UK nationals in trouble if it is a Sunday. Geoffrey Saunders

OUR VIEW Times are changing FOR many people there is a conundrum in Spain - the attitude of Spaniards to animals. On the one hand many lavish love and attention on their pets, just like people everywhere. But on the other there are said to be 12,000 events in the country, which involve some form of suffering to animals. And on top of that the abandonment of dogs and other animals is a huge problem, that requires voluntary charities all around Spain - many of them run by expats - to help. Even worse, there are still cases reported every year of hunting dogs being strung up to die, or thrown down wells when their owners have no further use for them. And for many outsiders looking in animal ‘cruelty’ is actually institutionalised with the bullfighting seen by its supporters as an integral part of Spanish culture. But what many people do not see is that things are changing for the better. And the showing of PACMA in the general elections on Sunday highlighted the growing influence on animal rights activists within the country. It is one of the very few political parties anywhere in the world which stands in elections in the name of animal protection. It garnered 326,000 votes, up more than 40,000 from the 2016 election. Only a quirk of Spanish electoral law stopped them gaining a seat for the first time. But PACMA is confident they will gain representation in the upcoming European elections. This would indeed show the world that the times are a changing in Spain when it comes to attitudes to animals.

Election: Victory for Pedro Sanchez and PSOE Good to see turnout was more than 75 per cent! Wish the apathetic UK could get so much interest. Great to see the Conservative PP get its just desserts with a major collapse in its share of the vote after all the revelations in the courts. I see the latest projections for England’s local elections on Thursday suggest a similar result for the Tory party with an expected loss of 1,000 seats! (wonder why?) Meanwhile in Spain, look forward to seeing Pedro Sanchez ease hardship among long-suffering Spaniards with socialist reforms. Not so good though to see a far-right party in parliament for the first time since Franco’s military dictatorship fell in the 70s. The last thing Spain needs is the Vox party which opposes multiculturalism and even feminism! Brian

We read messages on VHS, audio cassettes, CDs and DVDs over the years saying piracy is killing the entertainment industry but we don’t see much evidence of activity to prevent the sales of blatantly pirated goods on the streets of Europe. This is also true of the handbags and jewellery and sunglasses. Huge raids are carried out in the UK, but you rarely hear of any activity in Spain. NEWS that a Barcelona school has removed Little Red Riding Hood and Sleeping Beauty for being sexist got me thinking fairy tales won’t survive in the UK either in their current form. Not unless they can prove they’re ultra PC… Take for instance, Little Red Riding Hood (Red to her trans co-workers) who, you’ll recall, lives with her homemaker mother near a wood full of protected plants. One day, her mother asks her to take some organically-grown fruit to Grandma. Red: “Aren’t you oppressing me by ordering me like this?” “No,” Mother replies. “It’s impossible for women to oppress each other since all women are equally oppressed until all women are free.” On her way to Grandma’s, Red is challenged by the wolf. CONSULAR MATTERS MY Danish friend Peter has now told me that he wants a dog and he was wondering what the law is here in Spain. As Danish Consul and as a lawyer I always try to help people remain within the law, but in my particular case I have two rescue dogs so I am a dog lover and I am proud to be part of the dog owning fraternity. Peter wants to have a dog as he is now retired and it is good to have some company as he lives alone. Also it is a good way to keep his grandchildren occupied when they stay with him, and a way to meet people in the dog park or when he is just sitting in a cafeteria having a coffee with his dog beside him. It’s not common for me as a lawyer to advise on dog ownership, but maybe he chose me as I have two rescue dogs. Well the first thing in Spain is that the dog needs to be microchipped and have the corresponding vaccinations according to the age of the dog. IT’S A DOG’S LIFE: Make sure you know the rules for owning a dog. that the dog needs a yearly vaccination. The dog will need to be registered in the Junta de Andalucia. The vet will do that and will grant the dog’s passport. If his dog grows to 20kg or more
he will need to muzzle the dog when it is in a public place. Also the dog will need to be on a lead when it is in a public place. As for places to take the dog in addition to the great expanses of countryside near to our cities in

Spain there are also dog beaches and dog parks maintained by the local town hall. Peter can even take his new dog on holiday travelling by train, taxi, buses, plane or boat, always with prior approval of the shipping com-
pany. Dogs are welcome as guests in hotels, or private houses rented through AirBnb, Home Away or any other sites. He will need to search to make sure the host allows dogs; as time goes by more and more places are allowing dogs. As for the question of poop, you have to pick it up and dispose of it correctly; not only can it be a health risk but there is also a fine. As for carrying a bottle of water with vinegar in it, now this is the law in a few places but I highly recommend it at least during the summer time. Peter asked where is the best place to find a dog. Well in my case I wanted to adopt an abandoned dog so I went to the ‘Podencos’ and ‘Galgos’ association and ended up getting one from each. There are a number of rescue centres and even groups on Facebook which help rehome dogs. As for finding a vet there are a huge number here in Spain and just in case your dog has problems, health insurance is available. Good luck and welcome to the world of dog lovers. It was a let-down anyway, because Spain’s Electoral Committee decided that Vox couldn’t have its say along with Sanchez, Casado, Rivera and Iglesias because the rabidly ultraright-wing party does not have parliamentary representation. The argument that it definitely will after Sunday carried no weight, and Sanchez’s attempt to circumnavigate the veto by holding the debate on the private Atresmedia channel backfired. In the event the four held forth on the state broadcaster TVE as well as Atresmedia, but what they had to say paled into insignificance compared with getting them there. Supposedly it’s better to travel hopefully than to arrive, and it was more riveting to follow the politics of arranging the debatable debates than actually hearing them.

‘PENN TO PAPER’ I TOOK an exciting train ride this week. It may not be up there with Hercule Poirot’s Adventures on the Orient Express or Tony Robinson’s trips around the world, but for me it was mildly thrilling and new. I have always moved around the island by car or foot. The machinations of the Mallorcan public transport system have never really figured noticeably in my thinking and I have always dismissed buses and trains as irrelevant to life on the island. For reasons which aren’t important, I found myself minus my trusty car this week, and needing to get somewhere fast, I decided to tackle the issue of my ignorance of Mallorca’s alternatives to driving. Naturally I have been on the Soller train and enjoyed the view of beautiful blossom on row upon row of olive trees, but there is a massive difference between leisurely pleasury travel and necessary stressy travel. So imagine the scenario; there I am in a field in the middle of the island, (don’t ask why, just imagine!) needing to be at Mallorca Sunshine Radio HQ in Palma in 30 minutes. No car, no taxi (as I know

Time for reflection WHO would have thought it? Pablo Iglesias lauding the Constitution and pledging to fulfil and not demolish it during the pre-election debates! After all, not so long ago, he was agitating to boot out the Generation of ’78, but changing nappies for several months while on paternity leave must have given the Podemos supremo time to reflect. Probably he decided that implementing and respecting Spain’s Constitution isn’t a bad way of ensuring democracy will still be flourishing by the time his babies have full control over their sphincters.

I had seen many a bus whizz past in both directions up and down the road so I calculated it was a reasonable possible solution to the issue. After a short wait I saw a bus approaching and flung my arm out, waving it around frantically to flag down this public mode of moving. The driver saw me - excellent, I will soon be cruising down the Avenidas and past the Cathedral I thought. But this is Mallorca. Golden rule; never assume anything! The driver accelerated and
had the audacity to wave to me as he moved into fourth gear and off into the distance. Yes, I did swear at the ever-decreasing back end of the bus! My brother once described me as ‘resourceful’ and I think he knows me well, so I took stock of the situation and made some quick decisions. First, time to call in some overdue favours. Mates were summoned via phone and the joint decision to drop me at the Metro station was made. This was the equivalent of Miss Penelope (Thunderbird fans will know what I mean) opting to take a trip on Apollo 13. It was totally alien territory
for me to get the Metro. I was only vaguely aware it even existed. Since then I have done my research and I can inform you the Metro de Palma is a light metro system consisting of two lines. The M1 has 7.2km of route and nine stations, and was opened in 2007. In 2013, an existing 8.35km and nine-station rail line was bundled into the metro’s service as the M2 line. At the last count in 2014, the Palma Metro carried 1.17 million passengers; an average of 3,208 passengers a day. Last Thursday it was 3,209 passengers with me adding an extra bum on a seat.
First I went down the wrong hole (as it were) and stood looking lost and useless at the wrong side of the track. I was in danger of ending up in Inca. Next I had to grapple with the automatic ticket machine, but once that little test was successfully completed, I had the joy of waiting - alone - for a while. Unlike the Paris Metro, or the London Tube, Palma Metro does not have a service every three minutes, but every 20 minutes. On the upside, nor does it seem to have other passengers so I had the pleasure of a carriage to myself. My trip from Son Castello to Placa d’Espanya may not threaten Michael Palin in terms of entertainment value, but it was clean, smooth and - wait for it - efficient! I emerged from the underground dark burrow safe into the daylight of Palma, a little bewildered why I had never done it before. I may just do it again; and to the bus driver who ignored me so blatantly, I say (Oh they won’t let me publish that!) Men dream of models and air hostesses with beautiful faces and shapely figures, inspired by Sophia Loren and Vivien Leigh. The coarse or rotund are of less appeal. Each year a Miss World contest is held and provides television entertainment for millions of viewers. Some protestors claim the parade reduces the women to the level of a cattle auction, but they are in a minority. It is widely recognised that we are born with various blessings. Some of us have a developed intellect, others physical strength, a sunny disposition or sharp business acumen. Some are good at ‘fixing things.’ Others are blessed with good looks, so why should this not be recognised and celebrated? There is a range of daily newspa-

origin. Men are actors or conductors, women are actresses or conductresses. Firefighters are firemen and pupils are known as either schoolboys or schoolgirls. Churches are well-attended and the country upholds many Christian values. In most areas there is tolerance of al-
ternative beliefs and religious practices. Most families sit round a table together for meals. They bond over fried eggs for breakfast and homeprepared lunches and suppers. The children’s parents - mother and father - have been together since before the birth of the eldest and are likely to remain so. In a majority of cases the parents know where the children are practically all the time. When there are problems with bullying or unwanted attention, the children are likely to confide in their parents for a solution. If they misbehave at school, a caning may instil discipline. At home either parent can decide whether the offending offspring deserves a slap on the bottom or a ‘clip round the ear.’ Health and safety issues are sensibly appropriate for a mature society. For example, it is recommended that road workers wear face protection when using pneumatic drills to dig roads. The government may offer such guidelines, but greater responsibility is invested in parents, teachers and employers. Sadly there are no flights to this destination. This is, believe it or not, England in the 1950s.

MotoGP comes to Jerez
Valverde agony SPANISH world champion cyclist Alejandro Valverde (Movistar team), one of the favourites for the classic Liège-Bastogne-Liège (LBL) race, had to retire after the pain from a training accident became too much to bear. The four-times winner of the oldest classic race in the international calendar, gritted his t e e t h t h r o u g h 1 5 0 kilomet r e s b e f o r e h i s in jured tailbone caused him to pull up. Explaining the problem Valverde said: “I fell training on Thursday, I hurt myself at the base of the spine. Today we I decided to start, but there has been no improvement.” This is the first time he has retired from the classic race, although he was disqualified in 2012 for going off-route by mistake. Valverde has been enduring a tough season so far and has not looked comfortable for several weeks.

THERE are two huge weekends for motor racing fans in Spain coming up. On May 12 Barcelona will be hosting Louis Hamilton, Sebastian Vettel, and winner of the last race Valtteri Bottas as the F1 show comes to town for the start of the European leg of the championship. But before that it is the turn of MotoGP to grab the limelight. The world’s top racers will be at Jerez this weekend as the championship leaders battle it out for the exciting event. Spanish fans have high hopes of a home win and will be on the edge of their seats to see if Alex Rins can follow up his debut win in the last round with victory at the Andalucian circuit. Fellow Spaniard Marc Marquez will be out for revenge as he aims to bounce back from a crash in Austin that hit his title chances. Meanwhile Italian legend, Valentino Rossi is desperate for a podium finish to keep him in the hunt. He took second place in Austin and now occupies the same position in the championship standings - not bad for a 40-year-old. Fellow Italian Andrea Dovizioso was fourth in the last round after starting from 13th on the grid, which was good enough for him to claim top-spot in the table. Dovizioso is on 54 points with Rossi on 51, Rins on 49 and Marquez has 45 points.
SPORT THERE was a double triumph for Spanish golf in Rabat when Jorge Campillo and Nuria Iturrios won the Trophee Hassan II and Lalla Meryem Cup respectively. Cutting Costa ACCORDING to reports in Mundo Deportivo Atletico Madrid have finally tired of the behaviour of their Spanish international striker Diego Costa and put him up for sale. He is currently serving an eight-match ban after being red-carded in the recent loss against Barcelona. He compounded the offence by using foul language to insult the referee, as well as ‘man handling’ the official. The report says that head coach Diego Simeone wants to hold on to the Brazilian-born player, but senior management now see Costa as a liability. The 30-year-old has played 28 matches this season, scoring seven goals.
