What a con! A HOLIDAY home scammer is under arrest in Almeria. Police said the woman is suspected of conning some 50 people out of at least €10,000 in all through online adverts for fictitious holiday lets over the last year. She passed herself off as an estate agent, offering rentals in Retamar-El Toyo, the Zapillo neighbourhood of Almeria City and Roquetas de Mar. After speaking to her on the phone, victims paid the alleged con artist a reservation for the full amount. But the tourists were in for a holiday spoiling shock. When they pitched up at the apartments they discovered they were already occupied or didn’t actually exist. To remain under the radar the fraudster moved from place to place around the country. She frequently changed her mobile number. She also regularly changed her appearance, altering her hairstyle and

Natural treasures FOUR of the province’s unique natural wonders have become protected areas. The regional government last week awarded Natural Monument status to the 400-metre high Rock of Bernal in the Gador mountains, the river channels in Padules, and the Peanna and Marchal del Abogado ancient holm oaks in the Filabres mountains in Seron. This brings the number of sites in Almeria categorised as Natural Monuments and meriting special conservation
due to their singularity, beauty, rarity, or scientific, scenic or cultural importance to 10. The Isla de Terreros and Isla Negra in San Juan de los Terreros, the Albar juniper in Chirivel, the Posidonia reef in Roquetas de Mar, the Isla de San Andres in Carboneras, the Rock of Lobera i n L u c a r, a n d t h e A m b r o s i o C a v e i n Velez-Blanco were already included in the Andalucia Natural Monument network.

NEWS EXTRA Jobless drop THE provincial unemployment rate has fallen seven points over the last year, dropping from 23.4 to 16 per cent, according to National Institute of Statistics figures. There are currently 54,700 people out of work in Almeria.
Voters up AROUND 71 per cent of the electorate turned out to vote in the province’s 103 municipalities in the general election on Sunday, nine points higher than in the last national poll in June 2016.
Taxi attack POLICE arrested four youngsters in Almeria for repeatedly hitting a taxi driver and damaging his vehicle after refusing to pay the fare for taking them home from a nightclub in the Cortijo Grande neighbourhood of the city.
First offence GUARDIA Civil detained a 19-year old first-time offender for forcing his way into a property in a rural area of Los Nietos in Nijar and stealing TVs, mobiles, toys, household goods and construction materials.

Surge in support for Socialists THE Socialist Party claimed victory in Almeria in Sunday’s general election. PSOE won more than 98,000 votes, or approximately 30 per cent of the provincial total. The result represented a massive surge in support for the party. In the last general election in June 2016 less than 85,000 Almerians cast their vote for PSOE. The conservative Popular Party, which had been the top political force in the province for the last 15 years, polled just over 73,500 votes, around a 22 per cent share. This was a massive drop from the nearly 132,000 voters opting for PP in Almeria in the last national election. New far-right party Vox emerged the third most voted for party at provincial level with over 62,500 votes (19 per cent), pushing the centreright Ciudadanos party into fourth place with just under 56,000 votes (17 per cent), up from just under 42,000 last time. The left-wing Unidas Podemos party took just under 9 per cent of the provincial vote.

Drug lab dismantled GUARDIA CIVIL dismantled a clandestine drug laboratory in Murcia used to produce cocaine and other narcotics for distribution and sale in the Los Velez region of Almeria. The Guardia operation began in September with looking into a group based in Chirivel and Velez-Rubio suspected of acquiring and distributing drugs. Exhaustive investigations traced production of the illegal substances back to a
Colombian-owned laboratory in Puente Tocinos in Murcia. There the drugs were transformed into blocks using presses and chemicals in preparation for their release onto the market. Once ready, the drugs were shared between various intermediary distributors in Los Velez, who in turn divided their deliveries into small quantities and stashed them in hiding places in isolated areas.
The operation involved searches of 12 properties in Velez-Rubio, Chirivel, Oria, Puerto Lumbreras and Lorca, as well as Puente Tocinos. Officers seized 1,875 grammes of cocaine, 39 ecstasy tablets, five vehicles, two simulated guns and €11,000 in cash. There were seven arrests: the laboratory owner and six suspected members of the criminal gang distributing the drugs, two from Chrivel and one Velez-Rubio.
Investment package announced THE provincial council announced details of another package of infrastructure investments. The administration has allocated €1.5 million to projects ranging from upgrades to basic services in the Almanzora Valley to initiatives to promote tourism in the Alpujarra. The council funding for Lubrin is for improvements to six country roads and to putting in new water pipes to prevent leaks and breakages. Seron will get a new, bigger €381,000 municipal services centre. The emphasis is on developing tourism in Ohanes, where a €500,000 investment will be for the renovation of four disused buildings to turn them into new visitor accommodation. In Laujar the provincial authority money will be for a new two-storey building for staging events, meetings, exhibitions, workshops and cultural activities.

Capital celebrates THIS picture of Madrid City Hall comes as the Spanish capital and the surrounding region celebrates its annual holiday today (Thursday). Madrid City has a population of almost 3.3 million while its metropolitan area has one of roughly 6.5 million. It is the third-largest city in Europe after London and Berlin. The city, which covers an area of more than 604 square kilometres, was named the 10th most liveable in the world by Monocle magazine in 2017.
It is the seat of government and the royal family and is home to two of the country’s most popular football teams, Real and Atletico Madrid. The city was founded sometime in the 9th century and the first documented reference to it comes from a Moorish source while Spain was under Muslim rule. Fugitive tracked down A LATVIAN wanted in his home country to serve a five-year prison sentence for robbery and damage to property is facing extradition after police tracked him down in Almeria City. Teenage thugs identified GUARDIA CIVIL detained four teenagers accused of attacking two other youngsters and stealing a mobile phone. The four 15 to 17-year-olds from Parador de las Hortichuelas are accused of cornering the two youths in Roquetas de Mar in January. The Guardia reported one aggressor demanded one of the victim’s phones, threatening to kill them if they didn’t hand it over while brandishing a knife. The other three were mean-

while hitting the second victim, only stopping when a passer-by heard the shouts for help and went to see what was going on. The attackers made off, leaving the youngster with injuries requiring medical treatment. Victim statements, along with footage from surveillance cameras in the area where the attack took place, pointed the Guardia investigation in the direction of the youth accused of wielding the knife and subsequently the other three.

All’s well that ends well THERE was a happy ending for four wild boar and Paco the Pincher dog after they fell into an abandoned well in Nijar. The five animals all survived the traumatic experience unscathed thanks to a successful rescue operation. It was Paco’s owners, who after running some three kilometres to get help, first alerted the Guardia Civil that their seven-year old pooch had tumbled 10 metres down into the dried out well 400 metres from Playa Carnaje beach in the Cerro Lobos area, and that they thought there were other animals down there too. Officers hurried to the scene and confirmed there were also

were in a state of some distress. By this time Civil Protec-
tion volunteers and Junta de Andalucia Environment agents were also on hand. The decision was taken to get the Pincher out first. A member of Civil Protection was lowered down the 2.5-metre diameter shaft and managed to scoop up Paco and return him safe and sound to his enormously relieved owners. Getting the wild boar out was more complicated. Guardia Civil have now filed a complaint against the owner of the land where the abandoned well is located for failing to clearly signpost a dangerous excavation or take action to cover it to prevent people or animals from accidentally falling in.
Workout street style KEEP FIT enthusiasts in Mojacar can now workout street style. The local council’s Sports Department has created a Calistreetnia outdoor exercise park on the Descargador beach.
The new facility stands on a 100sqm impact absorbing surface made from two layers of recycled rubber. It features nine upright posts and two sets of parallel bars, one of which is sloping to allow for maximum exercise versatility.
Sports Councillor Ana Garcia said the workout park, along with the recently opened skate park, is part of a broad sporting offer in the municipality, and that further projects are in the pipeline.

Cat colony community action BEDAR residents came together to raise money for neutering local feral cat colonies, with a ‘table top’ event featuring sales of a selection of items and tarot readings by Chrissie Cremore. Jane Breay’s home-made marmalades helped attract a steady stream of customers and brought the grand total collected to €547. The hope is that with the assistance of the PAWSPATAS animal charity it will be possible to prevent the births of thousands of kittens and stop the cat colonies from expanding. PAWS-PATAS says it is happy to help out in areas which are inundated with feral cats, assisting with catching the animals and then returning them once they have been neutered. Drug pub arrest THE owner of an El Ejido pub is under arrest on drug trafficking charges. Acting in response to complaints from local residents about safety concerns stemming from the sale and consumption of illegal substances on the premises police began keeping a check on activities in the pub. It was during an inspection that officers found 179 grammes of hashish, along with €990 in cash. They also found half-smoked hash and marihuana joints, suggesting the owner tolerated his clients consuming drugs.

Church on the move THE New Life Church is moving to a new, more prominent location: former bar Salmentino’s on the road connecting Albox and the motorway. The idea of a church moving to a bar might raise some eyebrows, but New Life is not going to run Salmentino’s as a business. What the premises has in its favour is the double advantage of being easier to find and better for staging social and spiritual events than the church’s previous venue in Huercal-Overa. Pastor Robin Hawkins had been concerned that people in the community were unaware of the church’s existence. “Now many more people will get to know where we are, and will find it easier to visit us,” the pastor told the Euro Weekly News. New Life Church ministers primarily to the English-speaking community in Almeria, drawing its congregation from as far afield as Mojacar, San Juan, Urcal and the other side of Albox. However, its congregation is truly international, made up of 14 different nationalities. The church will be holding its weekly meetings at the new venue, starting this Sunday at 11am, and extends an invitation to anyone who would like to join them. The New Life Church’s new base is on the lefthand side of the Albox road, just up from junction 547 on the E15/A7 motorway.

Hunting out a good read MOJACAR came up with a novel way to celebrate World Book Day. For the second year running the Tourism Department invited members of the public to ‘Search for your Book,’ hunting out 10 strategically hidden vouchers at some of the municipality’s most emblematic locations, which they could exchange for a book of their choice at the Tourist Office from a selection put together by the staff. By 10am a visitor from Segovia had found the first voucher. They picked out the Guide to the Most Beautiful Towns in Spain. They were shortly followed by a San Sebastian couple, who chose the

Shoestring pulls it off again

A reason to visit FREE guided tours of Nijar town are underway for the third consecutive year. Organised by the local council’s Tourism Department, the organised tours run until October 12. Tourism councillor Alexis Pineda said the initiative gives tourists a reason for visiting the town outside the peak tourist months, and during the height of the summer season offers ‘an interesting alternative to the concentrated tourism on our beaches.’ There are three different routes. One takes visitors around the old part of the town and to the watchtower. A second focuses on Nijar’s artisans and commercial centre. The third option covers the start of the Molinos de Huebro track. The tours are offered from Monday to Saturday, setting off from the Museo del Agua at 10am and 7pm.

Road safety savvy A NEW programme of weekly classes teaching local primary school children about road safety got underway this week. The classes include practical and theory sessions, and will end with a session on the highway education track in June. Mayor Domingo Fernandez said the main objective of the programme was to get children interested in road safety and to make them see the importance of responsible behaviour and respecting traffic safety regulations when cycling, skating or skateboarding on public thoroughfares. He said the classes also gave the youngsters an insight into the work of the Local Police.
PRACTICAL: The classes will wrap up with a session on the highway education track.
Good start to tourist season MOJACAR’S tourist season has got off to a good start despite the April showers. The local council reported the municipality’s four-star hotels beachfront hotels were virtually booked up over the Easter holiday, visitors staying an average of four nights. Mojacar attracted tourists from around the world during Holy Week, the majority of national visitors coming from Madrid or Valencia. Brits accounted for the biggest group of foreign tourists, followed by French, American, Belgian, German and Irish. The Municipal Tourist Of-
fice dealt with nearly 2,500 enquiries in person over the Easter weekend. The office also registered a noticeable increase in telephone, email and social network messenger enquiries in recent weeks, and there were some 20,000 visits to the Mojacar tourism website in March and April. The Mojacar Tourism Facebook page now has more than 44,000 followers checking out the daily posts. The council also promotes Mojacar as a holiday destination through its Twitter and Instagram accounts and publishes details of cultural
events on its Mojacar Informa Facebook page. There is further online promotion of Mojacar thanks to its inclusion in the Prettiest Villages in Spain network. Mojacar offers more than 15,000 beds in its registered tourism establishments: 37 hotels and hostels of different categories, nine tourist apartment complexes, 870 properties registered for private rentals, four rural guesthouses and four campsites. There are also many apartments and villas used as holiday homes in the municipality.

Victory for Pedro Sanchez and PSOE By Linda Hall THE pollsters had it right and with 99.9 per cent votes counted at the time of going to press, the PSOE were the most-voted party on Sunday. The socialists headed by the current president Pedro Sanchez won 123 seats in the national parliament but will need pacts with other parties to govern. The Partido Popular, the PSOE’s closest rivals lagged further behind than expected with 66 seats and the party under Pablo Casado suffered its worst-ever defeat. His hard-hitting, far-right strategy backfired and the PP’s showing in Cataluña was abysmal, taking just one seat in Madrid and none in the Basque Region. Ciudadanos and Albert Rivera did better by poaching enough PP voters to win 57 seats, but did not manage to

the party that every other party feared for different reasons enters the national parliament for the first time with 24 seats although Santiago Abascal had hoped to win twice that. The Esquerra Republicana de Catalunya (ERC) pro-independence party doubled their seats in the national parliament to 15, while PNV and Bildu in the Basque Region also gained seats. There was a record turnout of almost 76 per cent, nine percentage points more than in the 2016 general election. It is already clear that the PP, Cs and Vox cannot repeat their Andalucia coalition and Albert Rivera ruled out a postelection alliance with the PSOE weeks ago. Pedro Sanchez must now look Left to form a government and woo the nationalists, possibly including ERC, to obtain the 176 seats he needs to govern.
PSOE and what they stand for PSOE are the oldest and arguably the most successful political party in Spain, having been in power for a longer time than any other party since the demise of the Franco dictatorship. PSOE (Partido Socialista Obrero Español) which translates as ‘The Spanish Socialist Workers Party’ is far removed from the British Socialist Workers party, having abandoned Marxist ideology in the 1980s. It now describes itself as ‘social democratic, centre-left and progressive.’ The leader of this party is Pedro Sanchez, 47, who became Prime Minister of Spain after the no-confidence vote in the previous government of conservative Mariano Rajoy in 2018. The major policies of POSE are: * Pro-European and further European integration. From May 1, Spain will hold the Presidency of the EU. * To introduce a fairer and more equitable system of taxation. * To create jobs - already policies are going ahead with the release of funds for major infrastructure spending projects as well as housing. * A review of spending to the regions, ensuring equality across the country. * Ensuring the rights of pensioners, the disabled, individuals from the ‘LGBTI’ communities, families and women, with a special emphasis on tackling racism. * Increasing spending in and improving the quality of education, especially in the sciences and to promote digital developments. * Developing health services to make Spain a worldwide leader in the field. * The urgent eradication of poverty. * Advancing consumer rights. * To develop policies to counter rural depopulation and develop opportunities in those affected areas.

Sri Lanka bomber ‘studied in the UK’ ONE of the nine people suspected of carrying out Easter Sunday’s terrorist attacks in Sri Lanka reportedly studied at a university in the UK. As more details of the atrocities emerge, Sri Lankan state officials have revealed the suspects were all highly-educated. According to Deputy Defence Minister Ruwan Wijewardene, “They wanted Islam to be the only religion in Sri Lanka. Most are well educated and come from middle or upper middle-class families. They are quite independent financially and their families are stable. Game of Thrones feature film in Spain THE first Game of Thrones feature film is to be premiered in Sevilla this summer. But for fans of the HBO series it is probably best to be aware that this is an ‘unofficial’ production, which, although based on original scripts, does not include your favourite actors and will be in Spanish. It is the brainchild of journalism student Maria Barcenas who assembled a team of more than 100 film technicians and actors to recreate some of the highlights from the eight series of the world-wide phenomena. She managed to get the blessing of HBO before embarking on the ambitious project, in which she revisited the settings used in the original series in Sevilla and

scenes for the recreation and worked from the original scripts. Now filming is complete, production company Seven Kingdom’s Studios says it will premiere in Seviila this summer, with the film also being screened in several cinemas across Spain.

€18 million fraud probe NATIONAL POLICE have arrested 26 people out of 36 investigated for social security fraud amounting to more than €18 million. Last summer 18 complaints were received by the authorities with regards to the alleged crimes and 36 suspects were investigated. The authorities carried out an operation in collaboration with the general treasury of social security. A network of up to 17 companies (13 debtors and four assets) were allegedly formed by the group to evade the owed payments. During the operation, it was revealed that the ‘plot leader’ had put the companies in his three-year-old daughter’s name.

THE heartbroken sister of missing Scottish woman Lisa Brown has revealed the
family has been taking a break from the search for Lisa, who went missing in
the south of Spain in November 2015, following the death of their mother. Helen Jordan, with brothers Craig and Martin, have been mourning the loss of their mum Catherine who passed away without knowing what happened to Lisa. Lisa Brown disappeared from her home in Guadiaro near San Roque in November 2015. The alarm was raised after the 32-year-old failed to collect her son Marco, then aged eight, from school. She has not been seen since. In an emotional statement on the Find Lisa Facebook page, Helen wrote: ‘Due to the loss of our mum we have been taking a break and trying to get our strength back again. ‘Her biggest fear was never knowing what happened to Lisa and not being here to
see justice, but we assured her we would continue as we have and we hope they are now together again. ‘One act of evil has affected all our lives and we blame the passing of our mum with this and to the people that remained silent. ‘Thank you everyone for all the support and help we still receive, we couldn’t do this without you all.’ Scottish mum-of-one Lisa, who was 32 when she vanished, was last seen at her home on November 4, 2015. Investigators have said they believed a ‘violent episode’ had taken place prior to her disappearance, but her body has never been found. Liverpool-born yacht dealer Simon Corner was detained in Denmark on a European Arrest Warrant and extradited to Spain after leaving the country in the wake of Lisa’s disappearance. Last April Corner was freed from an Algeciras prison on bail but reportedly broke the terms of his agreement by failing to present himself at a Costa del Sol police station and was re-arrested at Heathrow airport. Her colleague Carlos Herrera announced Paloma’s death, saying, “It’s really hard for me to give you this news, it’s really hard for me, Paloma Tortajada has passed away, a companion for so many nights and mornings and an editor of this programme… Paloma Tortajada honoured our profession every day, in the media, in journalism in Spain… We will miss you always.”

Other big names announced to also play the event are Madonna, 2014 Eurovision winner Conchita Wurst, 2015 winner Mas Zermerlow, and last year’s runner-up Eleni Foureira. ‘Illegal’ taxi driver fined POLICE in Spain have ‘immobilised’ a pirate taxi after the driver tried to charge three tourists €12 for a trip which was just a 100metre walk. Algeciras Local Police in the south of Spain leapt into action after spotting three people approaching a Renault Scenic near the ferry terminal. They say the taxi driver planned to charge
the three tourists €4 each for the trip which was just a 100-metre walk away in a straight line; although the ‘taxi’ would need to take a detour. The unlicensed local driver now faces a fine of €1,380 for breaking local regulations and also the cost of recovering his vehicle from the municipal compound where it was taken by a recovery truck.

Banking changes SPANISH banking group BBVA has announced plans to unify its branding and bring all its subsidiaries around the world under one name. The move means the group will discontinue using country-specific names, including Bancomer in Mexico and Frances in Argentina. The Garanti Turkish franchise will also
change its name to Garanti BBVA, consolidating the group’s image globally. The announcement was made at a meeting attended online and in person by almost 126,000 people. At the event, BBVA also revealed its new logo, as well as plans to offer its customers the best service in an increasingly digital age.
Insurance fraud THREE people have been arrested in Cataluña on suspicion of committing a €76,000 medical insurance fraud. The group, two residents of Cervera and one from Guissona, are also accused of document forgery after they allegedly falsified medical reports to claim compensation. According to Catalan police, the investigation began eight months ago following a complaint from an insurance company about alleged scams committed by four people in the
Lleida region of La Segarra. The company claimed the suspects had ‘fraudulently’ collected compensation for fractures despite not having been signed off for sick leave in the periods they had allegedly suffered the injuries. The detainees, a 37 and 31year-old from Egypt, and a 31year-old from Romania are accused of submitting nearidentical medical reports to justify their injuries, leading the insurance company to investigate further.

Killer fire man jailed A MAN held to be responsible for starting one of the fires that burned out of control in Galicia in 2017 killing four people has been jailed for nine months. Miguel Ángel MN, is the first of three men arrested after the forest fires that devastated nearly 50,000 hectares to be tried. As well as the jail sentence he was ordered to pay €1,620 by the Provincial Court of Ourense who decided he was guilty of serious negligence rather than arson. The defendant maintained he was holding a BBQ, saying “I was roasting chorizos, I am not an arsonist.”

Running dry CLIMATE change will leave Spain’s Tajo-Segura Water Transfer dry by 2070, according to news reports. The water transfer system, one of the largest hydraulic engineering works ever created in Spain, channels water from the Tagus River, Spain’s longest river. According to experts, by 2070 it will no longer be possi-
ble to transfer water to the Segura basin due to decreased rainfall. Since 1979, the TajoSegura Water Transfer has been providing water to the area in southeast Spain, bringing in a GDP of €2,364 million and supporting more than 100,000 jobs, according to one report. Francisco Pellicer, researcher at the Catholic University of
Murcia, told Spanish media: “In recent years, the transfers to the basin of the Segura River from the Tagus are much lower than planned. Instead of the theoretical 540 cubic hectometres per year that should arrive, there have been flows to the basin of the Segura River of about 365 cubic hectometres per year on average.”
Ins and outs of the Padron
Living in Spain can bring with it an array of issues which may not have been encountered when living in the UK. There are lots of things to consider, and we are here to help try to make the transition and life in Spain a little easier by compiling a series of helpful facts and figures relating to a variety of topics.
IN simple words, the padron is a local certificate that you are given when you register at your town hall. In Spanish it is called ‘certificado de empadronamiento,’ and helps compile a list of those people who live in a municipality. The padron is used by the government and local authorities to keep a ‘head count’ on how many people live in the area, and as such receive financial assistance in the form of subsidies and grants from provincial, regional and central authorities for the provision of services. Anyone who lives for more than six months in Spain is required to register on the padron. However, the certificate itself only lasts for a limited period of time, and must be renewed. A handy website is: www.spanishsolutions.net/of ficial-documents-in-spain/padron To register on the padron you need: Your passport, Your NIE or residence certificate, The deeds to your house or a copy of your rental agreement, A recent utility bill in your name. To add someone onto your padron, as it must contain all occupants, you will need: • Title deeds of the property, • The passports of both parties, and copies, • A utility bill, • Both certificates of residence, • Rental agreement (if renting and not residing with owner). Since you need the padron certificate to become a Spanish resident, but you cannot give the padron office your residency until you apply for it, the padron offices usually give a set period to return and present your Spanish residency. Residents who can demonstrate a specified time on the padron, can also receive benefits or a cash grant when getting married to another resident, or could qualify for financial assistance for any children born in Spain. The traffic department of Spain, require a padron to register a car in your own name, to import a car from another country, to qualify for a Spanish driver’s licence, and in some cases to purchase mobile phones or electrical goods. BREXIT BRIEF Second referendum debate reignited THE publicity surrounding Britain’s two new political parties and their European election campaigns has reignited the debate about a second referendum. The two groups, Change UK and the Brexit Party, have both set out their stalls on completely opposing ends of the political spectrum. Change UK has labelled itself as the ‘natural home of the remain alliance,’ while the Brexit Party is squarely behind leaving the European Union. Some commentators said the stark difference between the two parties could turn the European elections into ‘another vote on Brexit, with two very clear options.’ British journalist Thomas Hunt told podcast Brexit: The Final Countdown: ‘I actually think the whole ‘second referendum, we need another vote on Brexit,’ this is it.’ He added: ‘No- one is voting for their local leisure centre to get EU funded, this is down purely to Brexit, Remain or Leave, it’s the exact same.’ Meanwhile, Liberal Democrat leader Vince Cable was met with booing and shouts by the Question Time audience after he suggested a second referendum was the only way to, ‘lance the boil of Brexit.’
Farage sets sights on general election By Joe Gerrard NIGEL FARAGE has ruffled feathers in the Conservative and Labour parties after confirming his newly-formed Brexit Party will stand at the next general election. Rather than simply fielding candidates at next month’s European Parliament elections, the former UKIP leader said he now wants to use the opportunity as a ‘springboard,’ for ‘massive change’ in UK politics. According to several polls, Farage’s party already looks sets to make large gains at the EU elections, with many former Conservative and Labour supporters pledging to switch allegiance to his Brexit Party. The politician’s latest announcement that his party will also stand at the next general election could see Britain’s current political landscape dramatically altered. Farage, who said he made his return to politics because he does not believe parliament intends to follow through with Brexit, claimed he hoped his new party would put pressure on MPs to leave the European Union by October 31. He told British media: “We want the European election to be the first step of a massive change which entirely resets British politics. “MPs will realise that if they carry on trying to stop Brexit, they’ll lose their seats at the next general elec-

MEASLES VACCINE: Experts believe concerns of vaccine safety has caused a decrease.
Measles outbreak HEALTH experts are warning measles cases have risen by more than 300 per cent because more children are not receiving a vaccine. The World Health Organisation (WHO) claimed more than 20 million children worldwide are not being given the life-saving inoculation each year, declaring the issue a ‘public emergency.’ The WHO said decreased inoculation rates mean collective immunity - the concept where a
disease is almost eradicated if a high enough proportion of people receive a vaccine, normally 95 per cent - is beginning to fail. UNICEF reported around 169 million children did not receive the first part of the innoculation - which comes in two phases - between 2010 and 2017. The number of cases of measles worldwide in the first three months of 2019 has since reached more than 110,000, almost a 300 per cent increase on the same period last year.

Bank to revisit worker payout
Deficit fall on course SPAIN is currently set to exit an EU public spending scheme launched after the eurozone crisis after Brussels revised figures for Madrid’s annual deficit down. The EU’s Eurostat statistics agency revised down Spain’s estimated 2018 budget deficit as a percentage of economic output (GDP) to 2.48 per cent from the 2.63 per cent previously stated. That means Spain could leave Brussels’ Excessive Deficit Procedure as early as June this year if the financial and economic outlook does not change drastically in the coming months.

Economy Minister Nadia Calviño said at the time that the fall from 3.1 per cent in 2017 came from increases in tax receipts despite higher government spending. Calviño added Spain would not be on course to meet targets for deficit reduction set by the previous conservative Partido Popular (PP) government. That administration wanted to cut spending to bring the deficit down to 2.2 per cent of GDP in 2018.
Spain entered the Excessive Deficit Procedure in 2011 during the eurozone debt crisis. It saw Brussels attempt to impose spending restrictions on Madrid as well as Greece, Ireland and Portugal. It requires member states to keep budget deficits below 3 per cent of GDP and national debt beneath 60 per cent of GDP. Spain’s national debt as a percentage of GDP stood at more than 97 per cent last year, according to Eurostat. IMF forecasts released earlier this month predicted Spain’s deficit would remain below 3 per cent of GDP until at least 2024.
MANAGERS of CaixaBank have agreed to look into increasing payoffs for workers recently laid off after unions claimed they were ‘extremely insufficient’. The bank and the USO union have been in talks over the compensation after managers announced plans to cut branches by 18 per cent, affecting around 2,157 workers. The union has asked the bank to increase payouts and to ensure workers who opt to transfer to different branches are adequately compensated. Previous plans would have seen staff aged under 53 paid redundancies worth 40 days per year worked.

Survey finds debt optimism ALMOST half of Spanish debtors think their financial situation will improve, and more than one in 10 believe it will get worse in the coming years, a study has found. The Kruk Group lending broker study also found the percentage of people who did not have outstanding debts who were optimistic about their financial futures stood at 36 per cent.
Around two-thirds of survey respondents not making payments said having debt is a problem which must be dealt with as soon as possible. The equivalent figure for those in debt was 51 per cent, the study found. About 9 per cent of people not in debt had savings equivalent to three years worth of income. The survey found telephone and internet bills were the least urgent payments to make.

Pound GBP/EUR: Down from €1.16 to €1.15 GBP/USD: Down from $1.32 to $1.30 The pound had a volatile start to February, fluctuating against currencies like the euro and the US dollar as April 12 - the UK’s revised deadline for leaving the EU - approached. A series of failed votes and stalled talks undermined hopes that a deal would be struck in time, and some feared that the UK would crash out of the EU without a deal. However, the UK was granted a flexible extension, with the possibility of staying in the EU until October 31. This development stopped the pound tumbling, but concerns about the impact of more months of uncertainty saw Sterling struggle as Easter approached.

EUR/USD: Down from $1.14 to $1.12 Although a dovish policy outlook from the European Central Bank (ECB) and mixed ecostats for the Eurozone have prevented the euro from shining against the US dollar in the last four weeks, the common currency has managed to edge higher against the pound. EUR/GBP has risen slightly in the wake of the EU granting the UK another Brexit extension, and the euro could extend these gains in the weeks ahead if the prospect of a deal being reached before the EU elections remains unlikely. Other news to look out for includes the ECB’s monthly bulletin, the EU Commission’s economic forecasts and Eurozone inflation data.

An arrogant affront
LEAPY LEE SAYS IT OTHERS THINK IT JUST how much more of this one-sided, socalled diversity claptrap are we intended to put up with? This latest announcement, sanctioned and approved by the Lord Mayor of London (surprise surprise), is not only an insult to the intelligence of the beleaguered local British populace, but just about as far from integration and harmonious diversity as you can get. Apparently the North London Muslim Housing Association, (Yep), who actually go to great pains to advertise that they build and provide accommodation for all denominations and cultures, intends to build a London enclave of houses for Muslim occupation only. Apparently this company is fully endorsed by the GLC, who have already donated almost two million pounds to its coffers, and you can be certain if Mayor Khan has his way, are no doubt poised to pour in even more. Just how naïve do these people think (or not even care) the local populace actually is? Just consider the outcry there would be if a UK construction company announced it was building an estate to house only English or white practising Christians, or in fact any religion other than Muslim. There would be condemnations in the media, questions in the House, rioting in the streets and possible legal proceedings in the courts. Instead of that, this whole unsavoury scheme

the very heart of British freedom and democracy and if allowed to continue will one day envelope the whole country. This one-sided appeasement and intentional segregation of a religion and culture, which the British public is trying so hard and patiently to nurture and understand, is nothing short of disgraceful, and both Mayor Khan and indeed anyone who condones these housing developments should be thoroughly ashamed and indeed brought up in front of the authorities to explain their actions, which are in the very least racist, and certainly in no way constructive to the UK’s endeavours to instill diversity and integration into the British way of life. Well, I wouldn’t hold yer breath. After all when you compare the outpouring of grief at the NZ mosque attack to the relatively lukewarm reaction from both the snowflakes and authorities to the Sri Lanka atrocities, I think you get some idea of how the land is beginning to lie. In fact, had some of the tragic victims in the latter attack not been British; it would probably have been old news after a couple of days! It would if the BBC had had anything to do with it anyway. TECH FOR THE TIMID ALL hail the arrival of flexible phones. Now all their inventors need to do is find consumers gullible enough to spend two grand on them. Earlier this year Samsung, Huawei and several also-rans unveiled their fancy new folding phones to a market frenzied with apathy. Why in Edison’s name would anyone actually want one? The cynical answer: because in a smartphone market struggling to overcome stalled innovation and the vanilla blandness of one glass slab after another, manufacturers are desperate to introduce The Next Big Thing. Big the folding phones certainly are. Instant candidates for a WeightWatchers course, some are double the thickness and heft of a standard phone as well as being double the price. It’s actually cheaper to buy two complete phones and use them alongside each other, but just like owning one of these fancy new Siamese-twinned phones, why would you? Open up the clunky device and voila, you’ve got an eight-inch tablet-

Back in my formative years I opened my copy of Catcher in the Rye so many times the cover broke. Wouldn’t the new folding phone suffer the same fate? Not at all, say the producers; the hinge is guaranteed for ‘tens of thousands’ of foldings, thanks to innovative
thin and durable polymer screens and an ingenious mechanism with multiple interlocking gears hidden in the enclosure. It all smacks of overkill. And should we really buy the hype, given that we actually had folding phones way back in 2009? That’s when those peskily awkward flip phones were the absolute height of chic with their clamshell designs.
True nerds (I plead guilty) went the whole hog and bought Nokia’s monstrous Communicator phone with its complete fold-out keyboard; in essence a computer you hoisted to your ear and about as practical as a chocolate teapot. Flip phone users had endless tales to tell, from hitting the external internet button by mistake and then having to pay for expensive data during the subsequent scramble to open the phone and find the kill command, to the unrivalled satisfaction of being able to slam the phone shut on a bad conversation. With the new folding phones due on sale in Europe shortly (some at an eyewatering €2,000 or more) who can say whether they are the future for anyone other than early adopters desperate to impress. But hey, if you really want a folding phone right now there’s actually a cheaper way. Just sit on your existing phone.
5G or not 5G THERE are only two real smartphone innovations on the horizon to part us from our cash, and folding phones are one. 5G is the other; the new superfast worldwide mobile data standard. But r i g h t n o w i t ’s s t i l l m o re hype than happening. 5G is touted as the driver of the ‘Internet of Things’; enabling all of our connected devices to ‘talk’ to each other untouched by the human hand. Right now, as I write this, I’m in Tanzania, with my daughter and family at their home in Arusha, under the shadow of Kilimanjaro, having flown out from Alicante to Dar-Es Salaam for a few days with them on the coast near Zanzibar. Our administration company is also the managing agent for the aparthotel and the rentals. We recently called an EGM to remove this administrator. Now he has refused permission to see our bank accounts and we are told that our community fees are far too high. The same administrators were removed by the court from another apartment block and had to refund money to the owners. We have installed a new administration company. CONSULAR MATTERS MY Danish friend Peter has now told me that he wants a dog and he was wondering what the law is here in Spain. As Danish Consul and as a lawyer I always try to help people remain within the law, but in my particular case I have two rescue dogs so I am a dog lover and I am proud to be part of the dog owning fraternity. Peter wants to have a dog as he is now retired and it is good to have some company as he lives alone. Also it is a good way to keep his grandchildren occupied when they stay with him, and also a way to meet people in the dog park or when he is just sitting in a cafeteria having a coffee with his dog beside him. It’s not common for me as lawyer to advise on dog ownership, but maybe he chose me as I have two rescue dogs. Well the first thing in Spain is that the dog needs to be microchipped and have the corresponding vaccinations according to the age of the dog. Basically all vaccinations and the micro-chip have to be done during the first six months. After

pany. Dogs are welcome as guests in hotels, or private houses rented through AirBnb, Home Away or any other sites. He will need to search to make sure the host allows dogs; as time goes by more and more places are allowing dogs. As for the question of poop, you have to pick it up and dispose of it correctly; not only can it be a health risk but there is also a fine. As for carrying a bottle of water with vinegar in it, now this is the law in a few places but I highly recommend it at least during the summer time. Peter asked where is the best place to find a dog. Well in my case I wanted to adopt an abandoned dog so I went to the ‘Podencos’ and ‘Galgos’ association and ended up getting one from each. There are a number of rescue centres and even groups on facebook which help rehome dogs. Carbon monoxide IT was good news to hear that the family of the poor man who died from carbon monoxide poisoning while on holiday in Cantabria has now received compensation for the tragic accident. I was surprised but pleased to hear that the case had settled so quickly and hopefully his relatives can now begin to heal. The case does raise the wider issue of carbon monoxide risk, however, and serves as a good reminder to us all to install carbon monoxide and smoke detectors in our homes. I personally also like to make sure a professional checks my boiler regularly. Arthur Drake
Citizen Sarah THE news that Sarah Almagro Vallejo has been given honorary citizenship of Marbella brought a tear to my eye. I cannot imagine how much this young woman’s life has changed since she lost all her limbs to septicaemia last year, but she continues to carry herself with such courage and optimism. I was delighted to read that local politicians have now recognised her bravery. It was also good to read that thanks to fundraising efforts, Sarah has now received prosthetic hands, and will soon receive prosthetic feet. I hope locals continue to be generous in supporting this inspiring girl. Mrs G Halls
Suicide stopped I WAS saddened to read about the teenage girl who a taxi driver reportedly prevented from killing herself in Marbella. While I am of course delighted to hear t h a t t h e g i r l w as ta lk ed down from the bridge and taken to hospital, it was shocking to hear that s h e wa s sa i d t o h a v e b ee n brought to that state because of bullying. With the rise of social media I believe the issue of teenage bullying is becoming worse. It was bad enough when I was at school, but now it seems to be that with computers it does not stop once you get home. Mr Charles James
Cancelled passport I LIVE here in Spain and work in Moscow. Recently I was coming home from Moscow via Eindhoven and the Dutch police refused me entry because Malaga Consulate had cancelled my current valid Passport. I applied on April 4 to have my old passport cancelled as I had lost it. Instead Malaga Consulate cancelled my valid passport. I was left in Eindhoven airport police station with no help from anyone in the UK Consulate. Nobody on any of the socalled Helplines answered the phone - and it took one hour 45 minutes to get any response on an Online Chat Helpline UK Gov use. When I got a response it was to say that they could
REFUSED ENTRY: Valid passport cancelled. not guarantee to ‘reverse the cancellation notice you provided.’ So now, because they cancelled the wrong passport - the one I told them (in the letter that accompanied the request) that I could not be without - hence applying by post. So they took my request, went away, found my other passport number and

cancelled that and now refuse to correct their mistake. And people should be aware that the passport people can cancel your passport at any time and you have no recourse, no help, nobody available from UK Gov to help UK nationals in trouble if it is a Sunday. Geoffrey Saunders

OUR VIEW Times are changing FOR many people there is a conundrum in Spain - the attitude of Spaniards to animals. On the one hand many lavish love and attention on their pets, just like people everywhere. But on the other there are said to be 12,000 events in the country, which involve some form of suffering to animals. And on top of that the abandonment of dogs and other animals is a huge problem, that requires voluntary charities all around Spain - many of them run by expats - to help. Even worse, there are still cases reported every year of hunting dogs being strung up to die, or thrown down wells when their owners have no further use for them. And for many outsiders looking in animal ‘cruelty’ is actually institutionalised with the bullfighting seen by its supporters as an integral part of Spanish culture. But what many people do not see is that things are changing for the better. And the showing of PACMA in the general elections on Sunday highlighted the growing influence on animal rights activists within the country. It is one of the very few political parties anywhere in the world which stands in elections in the name of animal protection. It garnered 326,000 votes, up more than 40,000 from the 2016 election. Only a quirk of Spanish electoral law stopped them gaining a seat for the first time. But PACMA is confident they will gain representation in the upcoming European elections. This would indeed show the world that the times are a changing in Spain when it comes to attitudes to animals.

Election: Victory for Pedro Sanchez and PSOE Good to see turnout was more than 75 per cent! Wish the apathetic UK could get so much interest. Great to see the Conservative PP get its just desserts with a major collapse in its share of the vote after all the revelations in the courts. I see the latest projections for England’s local elections on Thursday suggest a similar result for the Tory party with an expected loss of 1,000 seats! (wonder why?) Meanwhile in Spain, look forward to seeing Pedro Sanchez ease hardship among long-suffering Spaniards with socialist reforms. Not so good though to see a far-right party in parliament for the first time since Franco’s military dictatorship fell in the 70s. The last thing Spain needs is the Vox party which opposes multiculturalism and even feminism! Brian

We read messages on VHS, audio cassettes, CDs and DVDs over the years saying piracy is killing the entertainment industry but we don’t see much evidence of activity to prevent the sales of blatantly pirated goods on the streets of Europe. This is also true of the handbags and jewellery and sunglasses. Huge raids are carried out in the UK, but you rarely hear of any activity in Spain. Revisiting the past FIFTEEN years after the murder of Claire Calderwood’s sister, Rachel, in Maine, Claire is working as a homicide detective in Detroit, in the US. When local police back in her home town ask the detective to help out on a case similar to her sister’s Claire is forced to revisit the past. Hoping to solve the crime, and overcome her grief, Claire begins investigating the new murder. As she carries out her work, journalist Noah Washington begins to take a very close interest in the case, pushing the detective for answers she does not yet have. MACS Buddies - for when you need someone to lean on
SUPPORTIVE: There are many different ways of raising money for MACS.
IN times of need it’s good to know you have the support of people around you, to pick you up when times get tough and simply to be there when you need them. This is especially true when you are battling cancer or have just received the devastating diagnosis. MACS cancer support group
has been there for more than a decade, supporting cancer patients and their families during these difficult times. MACS adopted song ‘Lean on Me’ has lyrics that really tell it all, and working tirelessly in the background, the MACS Buddies are there for patients and their carers whenever they need someone to lean on.
The MACS Buddies support system was set up during the early years of the charity and since then this group of selfless individuals has helped hundreds of cancer sufferers through some of the toughest times of their lives. The Buddies’ responsibilities vary according to the needs and requirements of each individual patient. Some people simply need someone to talk to, while others may require that little bit more. Buddies can also help the patients’ family or carers in tasks such as doing some shopping, picking up prescriptions or just spending some time with the patients so family members can get a little ‘me time.’ The main thing is that the Buddies are there to stay in
touch with the patient for whenever they need them. Inevitably patients and Buddies develop close relationships and many lifelong friendships have been formed. MACS Buddies come from all backgrounds and with different skill sets, but all have the same thing in common: the desire to make a difference. Aileen Cameron became a Buddy a number of years ago after initially applying to be a shop volunteer. She met with MACS founder, Elaine Brown and was so taken by her enthusiasm that she decided to become a MACS Buddy and really enjoys being part of the MACS team. Aileen moved to Spain in 2002 and lives in the HuercalOvera area. She explained that being a carer for someone suffering from cancer can be quite isolating, and having the support of a Buddy can make the journey easier for all concerned. Another Buddy is Sue Nortley from Mojacar. Sue lost her brother to cancer, and some months later joined the MACS team. As a former police officer for Greater Manchester Police, Sue enjoys dealing with people and she said that while police work is different from being a Buddy, it is similar in that no two days are the same. Sue puts her police training to good use in being strong and supportive, helping patients from all walks of life. MACS has been supporting cancer patients and their families for more than a decade and continues to expand its reach to help more people who are battling this terrible disease. The charity can’t function without its supporters and MACS welcomes assistance in any way, be it donations, fundraising, volunteering or simply just spreading the word. Homage to local literary giant VELEZ-RUBIO is paying homage to highly respected locally-born poet Julio Alfredo Egea with an exhibition dedicated to his life and work opening this Saturday at the Fernando Palanques library Exhibits include a selection of the late poet’s personal items, among them his typewriter, camera and a family photograph album. A further highlight is the black and white images of the literary giant captured by photographer Rodrigo Valero. Born in Chirivel in 1926, Egea became a leading figure in Granada’s literary movement in the 1950s, going on to have his work translated into many different languages and earning him a long list of awards. He passed away in September last year.

The walk begins at 6pm. The three and

Fire station upgrade
PLANS: As well as major improvements to the existing fire station there are plans to create a training centre for firefighters. ALBOX fire station is set to undergo important upgrades under an agreement between the provincial government and the Levante fire service consortium. Almeria Council is investing â‚Ź317,000 in major improvements to the facilities, which are now 30 years old. There are also plans to create a training centre for firefighters for the whole province on the site. Speaking during a recent visit to the fire station, Almeria Council president Javier A Garcia was keen to repeat that the provincial authority covers the entire cost of the firefighting service for the smallest municipalities.
The president was accompanied by the consortium president and Mojacar mayor Rosmari Cano, and by Levante Fire Station Chief Francisco Flores. The fire chief said he was grateful to the provincial administration for the upgrade project, commenting that there are currently ‘deficiencies.’ The Albox station is the centre of the firefighting service covering the Almanzora Valley. The fire station had been managed by Albox Council from 1989 to 2017 when responsibility was passed over to the provincial council.

Animal charity moving forward THE Animal Protection Society Albox (APSA) had a very successful 2018, the charity’s president, Dianne Reid told the recent well-attended AGM, Thanking the volunteers, Dianne outlined APSA’s development over the years and praised the many new ideas which keep the charity improving and moving forward. Margaret Ridyard was able to announce that membership has increased by 300 per cent. The homing team has been more success-
ful than ever, and APSA has a large, committed team of dog walkers. Val Shepherd was introduced as the new shop manageress. The charity made an appeal for more volunteer dog fosterers. APSA says dogs have more chance of being homed successfully if they have been in a normal environment with a family. A spacious five-seater with massive boot capacity and flat-fold seats also give it a high score for day-today practicality and with petrol and diesel engines in the line-up, manual and auto gearboxes and three trim levels, the C5 Aircross ticks all the boxes for those seeking versatile family transport. MotoGP comes to Jerez THERE are two huge weekends for motor racing fans in Spain coming up. On May 12 Barcelona will be hosting Louis Hamilton, Sebastian Vettel, and winner of the last race Valtteri Bottas as the F1 show comes to town for the start of the European leg of the championship. But before that it is the turn of MotoGP to grab the limelight. The world’s top racers will be at Jerez this weekend as the championship leaders battle it out for the exciting event. Spanish fans have high hopes of a home win and will be on the edge of their seats to see if Alex Rins can follow up his debut win in the last round with victory at the Andalucian circuit. Fellow Spaniard Marc Marquez will be out for revenge as he aims to bounce back from a crash in Austin that hit his title chances. Meanwhile Italian legend, Valentino Rossi is desperate for a podium finish to keep him in the hunt. He took second place in Austin and now occupies the same position in the championship standings - not bad for a 40-year-old. Fellow Italian Andrea Dovizioso was fourth in the last round after starting from 13th on the grid, which was good enough for him to claim top-spot in the table. Dovizioso is on 54 points with Rossi on 51, Rins on 49 and Marquez has 45 points.
SPORT THERE was a double triumph for Spanish golf in Rabat when Jorge Campillo and Nuria Iturrios won the Trophee Hassan II and Lalla Meryem Cup respectively. Fist to take the laurels was Iturrios who sealed her second Ladies European Tour win by seven shots. Both her wins have come in this event, with the previous one coming in 2016. A few hours later her countryman sealed his first tour victory on his 229th start. The win leaves Iturrios top of the LET Order of Merit.
Cutting Costa ACCORDING to reports in Mundo Deportivo Atletico Madrid have finally tired of the behaviour of their Spanish international striker Diego Costa and put him up for sale. He is currently serving an eight-match ban after being red-carded in the recent loss against Barcelona. He compounded the offence by using foul language to insult the referee, as well as ‘man handling’ the official. The report says that head coach Diego Simeone wants to hold on to the Brazilian-born player, but senior management now see Costa as a liability. The 30-year-old has played 28 matches this season, scoring seven goals.
