Cancer trek triumph by Dilip Kuner A WOMAN suffering from cancer has completed a 110km walk along the Tramuntana mountain range. Magdalena Socias Moya, a 59-year-old emergency doctor and former long-distance runner, completed her trek on Monday. Almost two years ago she was diagnosed with advanced cholangiocarcinoma, a malignant tumour in the bile ducts that occurs infrequently. Magdalena, who had started long-distance running when she was 50, kept up the sport until the cancer spread to her hip. She had undergone chemotherapy, but it was not effective because the cancer had also spread to her ribs and vertebrae. Undaunted she decided if she could not run any more, she
would do a long distance walk instead, with the aim of raising cash for charity. Her target is to collect €20,000 for the Biomedical Research Institute of Barcelona’s Metastasis Challenge (Repte Metastasi). Dr Socias Moya said money raised for the cause would be the ‘best investment’ for cancer patients and their families. Dr Socias Moya is currently being treated at Barcelona’s Vall d’Hebron Hospital. “I go for walks in the mountains whenev-
er my treatment allows me to. I believe in research because it will help us to move forward,” the doctor said. Her journey was done in five stages. The first was from Es Capdella to Esporles. She then went from Esporles to Deia, from there to Soller and Font des Noguer before arriving in Lluc and finishing in Pollensa. Dr Socias Moya has raised more than €15,900. Showing the flag THE Spanish frigate Mendez Nuñez recently visited Mallorca after joining the USS Abraham Lincoln Carrier Strike Group earlier this month. The Lincoln is the first US aircraft carrier to enter European waters since the Harry S Truman carried out a double deployment last year in the US Navy’s recently-revived concept of operating in an unpredictable pattern. “Our mission is to provide the Lincoln with defence capacity, carry out different maritime security assignments and guarantee the freedom of shipping and commerce,” said the M en d e z N u ñ ez ’s c a p tain A ntonio Gonzalez del Tanago.

HEALTH authorities have asked coastal town halls to introduce smoke-free beaches in a bid to reduce t he consum pt i on of ci garettes and promote healthy habits. At the moment the only beach t hat has a sm oki ng ban in the Balearics is Santa Eularia. “It is a programme to invite the municipalities that want to do it voluntarily to convert their beaches, some of t hem or a par t of t hei r beaches in spaces where smoking is prohibited,” said Maria Ramos, head of the health department. According to the Spanish press, a meeting was set to take place after the Easter holidays in which the town halls will be presented with materials such as flyers, brochures and badges to try and launch the initiative.
Show time THE Palma International Boat Show - one of Mallorca’s biggest events - starts on Saturday and it promises to be the best yet. The 36th edition of the show will be held at the Muelle Viejo until closing on Wednesday, and will feature 600 boats and 270 exhibitors on the 81,400sqm exhibition grounds.

Rich with history THIS picture of a fairytale-like castle comes from Castilla y Leon which celebrated its annual regional holiday yesterday (Wednesday). The Alcazar de Segovia (Sergovia Fortress in English) lies in the province of the same name in Castilla y Leon. Castilla y Leon became one of Spain’s 17 autonomous communities in 1983. It is made up of the historical Kingdoms of Leon and part of Castilla which both existed before Spain was unified after the Reconquista in the Medieval era.
The region is made up of nine provinces, home to almost 2,337,520 people, according to census data. It covers an area of 94,223 squarekilometres, making it the largest region in Spain and the third biggest in Europe. Castila y Leon has no official capital, but most of its administrative agencies are based in Valladolid City. The region started to form when the Kingdom of Asturias, a Christian stronghold in an otherwise Muslim Spain, began pushing south. They reached the area which is

Compo claim WORKERS in Mallorca who lost their jobs when Air Berlin went bust are in line for more compensation after a Palma judge ruled their dismissals illegal. A single worker - who will now get €27,000 compensation brought the case, but the ruling is applicable to all former employees of the German-based airline. The company went bust in 2017 with 43 employees in Mallorca losing their jobs. The Palma court’s decision follows a Nation-

Beaten to death A POST-MORTEM examination has revealed that Dutch film maker Wouter van Luijn, 34, suffered a brain injury before he was beaten to death while being robbed of €700. The incident happened in the early hours of July 13, 2018, but details are only coming to light now a court investigation is progressing. The main suspect in the crime, Adrian HF, 19, said in his court statement that he only pushed and slapped Mr van Lui-

He then took him to Son Espases hospital, where the victim died of a brain haemorrhage. Police were not convinced by the tale and arrested the suspect the next day. Cruising in PALMA Port was busy last Friday when two megacruise ships docked for the first time this year. These were the 183,000 tonnes Aida Nova, with a capacity for 6,600 passengers, and the 153,000 tonnes MSC Seaview, which can accommodate 5,200. The Aida Nova is the first of the new Excellence class and entered service last December. It will be based in Mallorca throughout the season. The MSC Seaview is the second of a new class and will also be based in Palma. Together they are expected to bring 300,000 people to the city this year.

PAY UP: Passengers suffering delays and lost luggage are demanding their rights. A MISERABLE year for travellers has seen the number of claims for compensation against airlines and shipping firms soar to nearly 3,000. But claimants may have to endure a long wait as Palma’s commercial courts are said to have ‘collapsed’ by
the sheer volume of cases they are having to deal with. In total the Balearic Islands saw 2,803 claims in 2018 with the majority asking for €600 as compensation for cancelled flights and others for lost luggage. This compares to just 173 cases in 2013 and 437 in 2014.

Planted pot PALMA Local Police have arrested a man who allegedly hid bags of drugs in decorative planters and other street furniture in the Lonja neighbourhood. Police say he placed the bags, each cont ai ni ng a small amount of marihuana or cocai ne, out of si ght while he waited for trade. When approached by people wanting to buy drugs he woul d r et r i eve t he substance desired from its hiding place, hoping to avoid police detection. Bus evacuated PANIC stricken bus passengers smashed windows to escape t he vehi cl e af t er someone let off a fire extinguisher. The interior was filled with fine powder, causing many of the 100 passengers - mainly aged between 17 and 25 - to start choking on the line 104 service to Punto Ballena at 11pm last Friday. The bus dr i ver cal l ed em ergency ser vi ces and completed the evacuation of the bus. Now a trade union is calling for security guards to be put on line 104 services due to the frequency of drunken incidents.
No to roads A PETITION against the construction of new motorways across Mallorca’s unspoilt countryside has attracted 4,200 signatures from people of 30 nationalities. Called ‘Llamamiento por una Mallorca más verde, digna y justa’ (appeal for a greener, more dignified and fairer Mallorca) the petition was supported by a string of local personalities from the field of culture and literature. It will be handed over to the Consell de Mallorca next week.

Drink driver A DRINK driver ploughed across a pedestrian island on the Andratx to s’Arraco road, demolishing road signs in the process. Several calls alerted emergency services to a ‘serious accident’ at 5.40am on Monday. Local Police and medics arrived quickly to find an Italian and a Belgian man standing by the wreckage of the car, both unharmed. A breath test showed the driver was over the limit. In a separate incident a driver lost control of his car and smashed into the wall of a tunnel at Son Vic de Andratx. Again there were no injuries, and Guardia Civil are investigating the cause of the accident, which left the tunnel partially blocked.

Good neighbours PALMA firefighters have to borrow an extending ladder from their Mallorca brigade colleagues whenever they need to go higher than three floors, it has been revealed. The news came to light when the Palma force had to send for help to remove a fire damaged sign from the Hotel Isla Mallorca in the city’s Son Armadams neighbourhood. The sign, on the hotel’s 11th floor was in danger of crashing to the ground and needed to be made safe, but local firefighters had no way of reaching it. Flames from the sign had already damaged the hotel’s exterior lift. The Mallorca brigade turned up from their Calvia base with a 30-metre ladder to help their colleagues. But it took 30 minutes for them to arrive, leading to concerns that in a serious emergency people may have to wait too long to be rescued.

All stuck up POLL PROSPECT: British voters could be polled for May’s European Parliament
EU Election looms by Joe Gerrard BREXIT has been delayed until October, but there was little respite for British political parties this week as it looked increasingly likely they will contest May’s European Parliament election. British Prime Minister Theresa May has repeatedly said she wants Brexit to take place before Britain has to hold the vote.
But the legal groundwork has been laid after Parliament was obliged to pass a ‘day of poll order’ mechanism earlier this month in light of ongoing uncertainty over Britain’s withdrawal. The country’s Electoral Commission, which would oversee the vote if it does take place, said their having to manage a ballot that may not happen was ‘unprecedented’. A Brexit deal would have to be
passed before Thursday May 23 if the vote is to be avoided. Polls show a drop in support for the ruling Conservatives who are in third place behind Labour and former UKIP leader Nigel Farage’s Brexit Party in first. Another new party, Change UK, is standing on a pro-remain platform and has drafted potential candidates from both Labour and the Tories and from outside politics.
MADRID vehicles, including mopeds and motorcycles, must now display an Environmental sticker or risk a €100 fine. The stickers, issued by the General Directorate of Traffic (DGT), classify vehicles according to the fuel they consume and their registration year. Vehicles with pre-2000 petrol engines and pre-2006 diesel engines are not eligible for the DGT stickers and the remainder are allotted one of five official categories. City mayor Manuela Carmena insists that the obligatory stickers will assist in
controlling Madrid’s notorious pollution problem. When pollution is high, they will determine which vehicles can enter central Madrid apart from residents on the municipal Padron or citizens officially recognised with mobility problems. Number-plate readers will ensure at these times that all vehicles not displaying their DGT sticker risk a fine. The measures will bar 3.3 million vehicles from the city centre, critics of the scheme have pointed out.
New army technology SPANISH soldiers are set to be equipped with new technology including unmanned vehicles,
augmented reality and exoskeletons. Army sources said the new technology would come into
service by 2035. The Logistics Corps is set to be equipped with unmanned supply vehicles while engineer divisions are due to get robots and machines that can work autonomously. The use of unmanned reconnaissance planes, or drones, is also due to be expanded. Electronic warfare systems capable of jamming enemy aircraft will also come into service and soldiers are due to be kitted out with exoskeletons that augment their strength.

Poet honoured URUGUAYAN poet Ida Vitale has been in Spain to be awarded the Miguel de Cervantes 2018 Prize for Literature in the Spanish Language. She was presented the prize by King Felipe VI on Tuesday at a ceremony in Alcala de Henares. Yesterday (Wednesday) she attended a lunch with the King and Queen at the Royal Palace in Madrid which brought together academics, publishers, critics, teachers, booksellers and writers to pay tribute to her.

Gender violence by Joe Gerrard THE economic cost of sexist violence against women in Spain is estimated to be as high as €185 per person, according to a new government report. The government’s Impact of Gender Violence report estimated the cost as a percentage of economic output (Gross Domestic Product- GDP) was at least 0.11 per cent.
Estimates range as high as 0.76 per cent, according to the study which used data from 2016, the most recent available. The total cost to the Spanish economy in cash terms was estimated to be between almost €1.3 billion and more than €8.5 billion. The report calculated the costs based on the estimated losses incurred by women who suffer from sexist attacks being unemployed or off
work. It also factored in the cost to the Spanish health system and to police and courts. Those factors are referred to in the report as tangible costs, those which can be measured. Intangible costs such as the psychological impact gender violence has on women’s children and relatives could be between almost €4.9 billion and more than €14.8 billion, according to the report.
Wildfire fatalities NEW figures have revealed 865 people died in wildfires in southern Europe between 1945 and 2016. The statistics, released by Wildfire Today, analysed the number of civilian and firefighter deaths in Spain, Portugal, Greece, and Sardinia. The report showed Sardinia had the highest proportion of wildfire-related deaths, based on its
population of 10.1 million. Leading causes of death were suffocation, burns, heart attacks, respiratory problems, physical trauma, and exhaustion. Another leading cause of death was aviation accidents involving firefighting planes. In Spain, 72 out of the total 96 fatalities were among crews on firefighting aircraft.

Driving licences in Spain LIVING in Spain can bring with it an array of issues which may not have been encountered when living in the UK. There are lots of things to consider, and we are here to help try to make the transition and life in Spain a little easier by compiling a series of helpful facts and figures relating to a variety of topics. If you are planning on living in Spain on a permanent basis, it’s a good idea to have a Spanish driving licence - in fact it is mandatory after a while. Here are some guidelines for current and new drivers on how to do this quickly and easily. If you already have a valid EU (European Union) Community or an EEA (European Economic Area) driving licence and meet the minimum driving age in Spain, you can use it for the first two years of residence in Spain, although you must register your details with the traffic authorities after six months. You can register at your Central Register of Drivers and Minor Offenders of the Provincial Traffic Headquarters. If you don’t obtain a Spanish driver’s licence after two years of residence in Spain and are caught driving, you can face a fine of around €200. Visit: www.dgt.es to find out more. Once the process is under way, you will have to adhere to the same conditions as Spanish licence holders: Have reached minimum age in Spain for the specific category of vehicle you want to drive, Relevant medical checks, Renew or exchange the licence after the first two years’ residence in Spain. If an EU licence is renewed in Spain it effectively converts it into a Spanish EU licence, which then needs to be renewed every 10 years up to the age of 65, and every five years after 65. The new regulation which requires new residents to exchange their licences for a Spanish one, was enforced three years ago. As such, Spain has agreements with more than 20 countries, allowing drivers to exchange a foreign driver’s licence for its equivalent. To find out more, check with your home country’s consulate in Spain or the Spanish Traffic Authority at www.sede.dgt.gob.es. To exchange your licence, you will need to fill out an application form that is issued by the Provincial Traffic Headquarters. (See the above website). The following documents will be required: Proof of identity (original passport and a copy), Proof of your residence for six months (Certificate of Registration in the Central Aliens Register - the NIE number), Application form (in Spanish), Current valid driving licence to be exchanged (original and a copy), Written declaration stating that you don’t have another driving licence of the same class in another country, Written declaration stating that you have not been suspended or banned, Two recent passport size photographs (32 by 25 mm), Medical fitness report (visit the DGT website for information). For new drivers, check the legal driving ages and permit types before you register. You can get details depending on what type of vehicle you want to drive by visiting: English-driving-school.com. The best option (for new drivers) is to go to a driving school as they take care of the registration process with the Jefatura (Jefatura Provincial de Trafico) on your behalf. Once you have registered, get your medical and vision test done, too. Theory tests can be done in a classroom or be computer based. Company makes growth ranking A TECHNOLOGY company based on the Costa del Sol has ranked 27th on a table of Europe’s fastestgrowing firms. Anteco Systems, which trades under the name AnyTech365, is among the companies which have made it onto the Financial Times most recent ‘Europe’s Fastest Growing Companies’ table. The table, which ranks companies based on annual turnover from 2014 to 2017, showed the Marbella and Torremolinos-based firm had an absolute revenue growth of more than 2.5 per cent. Its 2017 earnings stood at €5 million.

Bubble fears rule plan OFFICIALS with Spain’s Ecology Ministry have drawn up plans to tighten regulations on the renewable energy market amidst fears excessive demand could fuel a speculative bubble. Figures from Red Electrica de España (REE), which is in charge of managing and granting renewable energy access permits, shows current applications amount to more than 144,400 megawatts of power. Ministry forecasts under its Energy and Climate plan predicted the amount would be 67,500 megawatts. Concerns over a potential bubble previously led the Ministry to increase the guar-

It was hoped this would stave off those who planned to buy the permits to sell on at a profit. REE figures show power generated under the permit system totalled 28,400 megawatts, with permission granted for a further 45,900 and requests for 70,500. Fears about speculation are new to the energy market. Previous permit rules coal and nuclear power plants and other installations contained no measures preventing speculation because it was thought no
company would sell such assets on at a profit. But the arrival of renewable energy sources such as solar panels and wind turbines has reduced investment costs, lowering market barriers to entry and opening it to speculation. Officials fear if that happens, permits could become sought after solely for investment reasons, distorting the market and creating the conditions for a later crash. Spain’s National Commission of Markets and Competition (CNMC) watchdog would have to approve any regulation changes put forward to make sure they do not harm competition.
SPAIN’S Tax Agency has warned about politicians increasingly using corporate entities to reduce payment burdens as four government ministers were previously found to be doing so. The agency said the use of sociedades patrimoniales (patrimonial societies in English) allowed some to play the tax system by billing and buying through them. It comes after Pedro Duque, Isabel Celaa, Nadia Calviño and Maxim Huerta were found to be using sociedades patrimoniales. Huerta resigned as Culture Minister less than a week after taking office over his tax arrangements.

Bank merger costs higher RESTRUCTURING costs incurred by the merger between Spain’s Unicaja and Liberbank are estimated at €317 million, three times more than previously thought according to industry analysis. Credit Suisse’s report on the merger showed the cost of the merger itself would be €101 million, 10 per cent of the combined cost of both banks. Credit Suisse has also cut its estimates of expected
profits of the unified banks by between 15 and 17 per cent due to Spain’s overall economic outlook going forward. The merged Unicaja and Liberbank entity is estimated make €175 million in profit in 2019. The new entity is expected to net more than €1 billion. The new bank is set to become the sixth largest in Spain with assets of €92 billion.

LEAPY LEE SAYS IT OTHERS THINK IT I TOO, was shocked and saddened by the terrible devastation of Notre Dame in Paris last week. At the time of writing, no group has claimed responsibility and no blame yet been apportioned. ‘Appears to be accidental’ is a phrase being bandied about. This reaction being the usual, ‘petrified to offend anyone’ attitude which complacent European Christians seem to adopt for almost any atrocity which isn’t actually followed by a ‘we are responsible,’ sign, emblazoned in sky writing above their heads! However, before I am once again accused of some kind of phobia or another, let me run a few facts by you. In 2016, three females, with radical ties to Islam, were arrested in a street adjacent to Notre Dame; along with a lorry containing six gas cylinders and Arabic propaganda papers. In the violence which ensued, two police officers were injured with one being stabbed in the chest. After the incident police declared they were ‘in a race against time’ before a major terrorist attack took place. Also in that year, a Catholic priest was murdered by ‘two soldiers’ of a group calling themselves Islamic State (ISLE). Last year, in France there were 873 reported attacks on Christian churches and 1,063 anti-Christian acts. Bearing all these facts in mind, quite frankly, if this Notre Dame disaster is put down to coincidence, then I

COINCIDENCE?: Over the last few years there have been attacks on Christian artefacts and holy shrines. truly do give up. Just to drive my point home, as I write, reports are coming in from Sri Lanka of seven explosions, targeting six churches and hotels, which have killed nearly 300 people and injured hun-
dreds more. And all of these recent atrocities are occurring during one of the most sacred Christian periods of the year. Here are a few more facts for the disbelieving snowflakes and ‘infidels.’ Over the last few
years, all across Europe, there have been thousands of attacks on Christian artefacts and holy shrines. This year, in March alone, four churches in Germany were vandalised or torched. And still the silence from the authorities is deafening! Don’t take my word for this cowardly inaction. Cast an eye over a report last week on PI - News, a German news site. I quote: ‘Hardly anyone writes about the increasing attacks on Christian symbols. There is an eloquent silence in both France and Germany about the scandal of the desecrations and the origin of the perpetrators. Not a word or even the slightest hint which could in any way lead to the suspicion of immigrants. It is not the perpetrators who are in danger of being ostracised, but those who dare to associate the desecration of Christian symbols with immigrant imports. They are instead, accused of hatred, hate speech and racism.’ Unquote. Well, be that as it may, I am utterly convinced that unless the authorities get some bottle and at least publically recognise the problems of increasing ‘Christianophobia,’ some form of rightwing ‘tit for tat’ will begin to occur. TECH FOR THE TIMID FAREWELL little white Dash button, we hardly knew you. Well, barely, in its brief five years of life (though only two in late-adopter Spain). Certainly not at all in Germany where the courts ruled this January that it was a nein-nein. Killed off worldwide by Amazon recently, at its peak the retailer’s €5 Dash button came in several hundred ‘flavours.’ Initially thought to be an April Fool’s joke, the tiny electronic gadgets could be stuck on the wall, the fridge, the cupboard, and indeed in the toilet - a one-button method of reordering common household products. Just jab the Dash button dedicated to Tide washing powder, say, and its embedded wireless circuit would instantly send out your replenishment order to the Amazon warehouse. Hey presto, a day or two later and you could be kneedeep in detergent - as indeed one hapless family was when their toddler discovered the button.

HOPES DASHED: No more auto-ordering buttons. But over in Germany a court ruled that the buttons didn’t provide sufficient information about the product being ordered or its price. Shoppers have to know what they’re paying. Given technology’s inevitable Law of Unintended Consequences, hackers naturally descended on the little devices to make them seriously unfit for their original purpose. Hacked Dash buttons cropped up
to summon an Uber taxi, to order pizzas or beer, to track baby habits or working hours, to control home lighting, to fire up Netflix, to brew coffee or open the garage door, even to send a pre-worded text or most scarily of all, to transfer money from your checking to your savings account. All with a €5 gadget and a twitch of reprogramming. But now, says Amazon, we have moved on. Worryingly for some of
us, it says hundreds of ‘Internet of Things’ devices are now actually capable of ordering stuff themselves. Oh great; soon our gadgets can just rack up our grocery bills all by themselves while we get on with the important business of consuming all the stuff they’re ordering. It’s the ultimate capitalist wet dream; consumption which entirely removes the consumer’s decisionmaking process from the transactional loop. And the company certainly isn’t giving up on ideas for parting us from our cash. Alongside their hope you will use an Alexa assistant to voice-order stuff, Amazon’s ‘Subscribe & Save’ program lets you ‘automatically receive your favourite items every month.’ Goodbye regular shopping lists. Should we weep over the demise of the Dash? Not at all; offer it a brief word of thanks for creating more smart-home gear, come the day you reorder bread through your toaster.

‘Alexa don’t buy…’ SURPRISE surprise; despite 70 million Alexa-powered digital assistants sold so far, almost no-one uses them to actually order stuff. That’s not what Amazon hoped. Barely 2 per cent of ‘Echo’ owners use them for buying things. Of those who do, 90 per cent don’t repeat the experience. Ouch. That sheds doubt on predictions that the smart speaker shopping market will soon be worth far more than today. One problem is how to stop your kids, or indeed even an attentive parrot, from ordering stuff simply by saying ‘Alexa, buy some ……’ I should know. Teaching a nervous friend how to use his new assistant, I talked him repeatedly through the steps of ordering toilet paper. Alexa overheard; and he now has a year’s supply.

Bigger and better than ever - 36th Palma International Boat Show By Simon Wade THIS weekend sees the launch of the 36th Palma International Boat Show to Mallorca (Saturday to May 1). Considered one of the best floating boat shows in Europe, the five-day event, organised by the Balearic Institute for Business Innovation (IDI) is considered a glorious opener to the 2019 season. The festival of boating beauty - one of the industry’s leading fairs on an international level - takes place at the Moll Vell in Palma, with a record 270 participating exhibitors. This year is expected to be bigger and better than ever, with an exhibition area totalling 82,000m2 and more than 600 boats on show to the public. And the 36th edition will feature in
excess of 100 super yachts, the largest congregation of the sleek vessels in Europe and more than enough for spectators to stand and stare in equal measures of admiration, lust and possibly jealousy. Palma is considered as the perfect place for such an event as the historic Mallorcan capital has a total of 184 companies devoted to boating, making it the most dedicated in Spain. Specific areas around the show are designed to promote new equipment, water sports, nautical services and a number of brokerages. Events include presentations about plastic pollution in our seas and sustainable sailing. On Tuesday night, there is even a cocktail making demonstration by the Balearic champion of cocktails. And later in the day, attendees are invited
to enjoy a DJ set ensuring the party atmosphere continues well into the evening. Isabel Flores is from Azul Yachts in Palma. She said: “There can be no doubt that Palma International Boat Show is an unmissable annual event. Our experience at this show has always been excellent. Justifiably, it has succeeded in establishing a position for itself and gaining international prestige. “For this reason, being part of this major showcase is a real luxury. RUNWAY: Around 150 workers create a unique circuit for visitors. THE 36th Palma International Boat Show will feature a unique circuit for visitors to follow throughout the entire event. For the last couple of weeks a team of around 150 people have been involved in setting up the floating gangway which will link all the show exhibition area. The fair complex’s design means that some areas of the exhibition have been remodelled in order to optimise the Moll Vell setting even further. The gangway will connect Consigna Jetty with Industria Pesquera dock so that visitors can take advantage of the fair’s areas via a circular route

AFTER 17 years living in this country I have to agree with your article (Thank you to the Spanish health system - Issue 1760). Always an excellent service. Only three weeks ago I rang at 8.45am for a non-urgent check up with our doctor. The receptionist’s reply was ‘9.15?’ Then it was agreed that 10.30am would be perfect. Always the same doctor, sometimes a few minutes late, but sometimes out before the actual appointed time. Torrevieija hospital is more than first class. Sue Gell

Euthanasia I WAS so saddened to read the article about a man who helped his wife with multiple sclerosis to die who could go on trial at a gender violence court (Issue 1763). It is such a sensitive and important subject, and everybody is entitled to their own opinion. But while debates about euthanasia are being carried out, this case proves we must never forget that there are real people, with real lives who are suffering and have been for a long time. In my experience of nursing in the UK and Spain, the vast majority of my colleagues have been caring people irrespective of nationality. ‘Staff of different colours, creeds, nationalities with a variety of languages, all performing their duties in an aura of separateness.’Actually they operate in an environment of collective togetherness and bring a wealth of expertise to their work. We don’t have mass immigration. But without the immigration we have, the NHS would simply not be able to function. I don’t know why you have seen inside a lot of London’s hospitals this winter. VIOLENCE and abuse against women is not only morally abhorrent, it is also costing the Spanish economy billions. A new government report has claimed the cost of gender violence is equivalent to €185 for every person in Spain in the worst case. The estimated overall economic cost ranges between €1.3 billion and €8.5 billion. The latter figure is equivalent to more than one 10th of what Spain budgeted for welfare in 2017. Those costs do not take into account those incurred by the trauma inflicted on children and relatives who witness gender violence first-hand. The government estimates those are equivalent to billions in economic losses. Society clearly has incentives to eradicate the scourge of gender violence. If communities and the government could do more to spare women from mistreatment then they would be happier and free of violence-induced trauma. They would then be able to offer their talents in the workplace alongside the rest of us instead of suffering, often in silence, while their prospects dwindle. The wealth they create could be spent on helping to eradicate gender violence and offer more support to victims. Not only this, but it could be used to help reduce poverty, addiction and other factors that create the conditions for gender violence to thrive. But ultimately, we should never lose sight of the fact that the highest price for gender violence is paid by its victims.

THE rural property market is starting to boom according to data from the National Statistics Office (INE). Last year, the purchase and sale of ‘rustic properties’ in Spain increased by 3.9 per cent compared to 2017. What’s more, 13.6 per cent of all property sales in Spain corresponded to rural real estate, with 138,906 sales of this type of property. Apart from farming, rural homes are increasingly used as second homes, holiday homes or tourism accommodation - this is particularly important given the steady population decline seen in country areas. According to a study by FEMP
Rustic investments (Spanish Federation of Municipalities and Provinces) this is a real problem, with more than 4,000 Spanish municipalities having fewer than 1,000 inhabitants and being at risk of extinction in the medium to long-term.
In terms of investment, rustic properties can be a good opportunity, but it pays to shop around between regions. According to website Vitrio, the cheapest areas are Extremadura (4,149 €/ha), Aragon (5,194 €/ha),

Even though they sold or shifted on nearly €90 billion worth of foreclosed assets and bad loans in 2018, real estate continues to pose a high risk to their balance sheets, even all these years after the property crash. The Bank of Spain estimates that banks still have €72 billion tied up in real estate and loans, while credit rating agency Standard & Poor raises the figure to €80 billion one of the highest stocks in Europe. This translates as 7 per cent of the domestic financial sector’s balance sheet, a percentage which is practically double that recorded before the crisis. S&P argues Spanish banks should divest another €30 billion, leaving exposure to real estate risk below 4 per cent. It is possible, say analysts, this could happen over the course of the next two years. While S&P remains worried about exposure to property-related debt, it should be remembered that the banks have already divested themselves of considerable

Indeed, consulting firm Oliver Wyman, which was responsible for assessing the capital needs of banks in the darkest days of the financial crisis, now considers that property risk is no longer a problem for the sector. However, several organisations including the European Central Bank (ECB), the Bank of Spain, the International Monetary Fund (IMF) or S&P itself say banks should continue to divest themselves of real estate risk to ensure financial stability in the case of another recession.

LAURA PENN ‘PENN TO PAPER’ SOMEONE once told me that you ought never to meet your heroes as it only leads to disappointment. I cannot remember who that was, but in hindsight they must have had a bad experience. I have always found that meeting someone who you admire, for whatever reason, is an uplifting and inspiring gift. Ah - hang on - I do have one exception to prove that rule. I used to have a mega-crush on Tony Hadley, lead singer of Spandau Ballet, until I met him in the hospitality tent of a Madonna concert in the 1980s. Funny how you can go off someone instantly. I am not even sure what it was about him that repulsed me, but my crush was crushing me no longer. I am coming on to my point this week, which is that I once met one of my all-time idols and loved every minute of the experience - and I loved him even more at the end of it. Bobby Womack was on of the soul singing family the Womacks. He is often confused with his brother Cecil who had a big chart hit with

ALL-TIME IDOL: I loved meeting Bobby Womack. Teardrops together with his wife Linda. Bobby was a sole soul singer - if you see what I mean. He had several hits in the 80’s and soul fans know his gravelly voice well. He was one of those soul singers who used to talk before sang, and he even made fun of
this on one of his hits. The Womacks grew up in the slums of Cleveland Ohio and were so poor that they would fish pig snouts out of the local rubbish bins to feed their hunger. Bobby recalled that his mother told them to sing their way
out of poverty and a dynasty of great soul singers began. Bobby worked with the greats of 20th century music from Sam Cooke to the Rolling Stones and yet he was as down to earth as you could imagine. I had the good fortune to interview him at a radio station in Milton Keynes (of all places) and he arrived in a taxi with no entourage and definitely no airs and graces. He was meant to stay for an hour - he stayed for the full three-hour show. In the end we sent out for pizza and had a party in the office with one of the great soul legends of music. A memory I will always cherish. I was so sad when I heard of Bobby’s death in 2014, but I still get to hear his amazing voice when I play his songs on my radio show. If you ever get the chance to meet a human you admire, famous or not, grab it with both hands. It may just turn out to be the kind of memory that keeps you warm during chilly times. The A-Z of Mallorca has reached the letter ‘Q’ for Quely - a brand of biscuits that have been manufactured
on the island since the 18th century. The origins of these biccies go back to when seafaring folk needed food that could be preserved on ship. Quay biscuits last a long time! The oven in Can Guixe that produced these biscuits in the 19th century can still be seen in Inca today. The man behind the modern Quely is Jaime Doménech Borrás who bought land in 1934 to construct the first factory, but production was delayed by the Spanish Civil War in 1936 and the Second World War. After he died in 1947, his sons, Jaime and Gabriel, completed his work, producing biscuits under the name ‘Quely’ (the original choice of ‘Cor de Mallorca’ unavailable due to then legal challenges). The biccies became successful in the Mallorcan market during the 1960s. Today, the company is still run by the family and in 2010 Rafa Nadal became the international ambassador of the Quely biscuit. Mercedes-Benz B180 Sport ROAD TEST by Nick Fletcher THE Mercedes-Benz B Class is a spacious compact family MPV aimed at those seeking better accommodation for passengers and their luggage, and its stand-out sales point is the premium image it carries over from the company’s larger, more prestigious models. The latest version has sleek subtle styling cues which give the B Class an elegant exterior appearance, and inside, the beautiful cabin design is classy and impressive and immediately makes you feel you are driving a car which might cost twice the price. In fact, the entry versions start at €31,188 (£26,980) and are very well-equipped with climate control, LED headlights, cruise control, satnav, reversing camera, Bluetooth connectivity, alloy wheels, digital instrument cluster behind the steering wheel and a central infotainment screen. There are also optional upgrade packages to add extra
features. Standard safety kit includes forward collision warning and lane-keep assist. Accommodation in this compact MPV is spacious for five adults, with excellent head and leg room, and the boot at 455 litres is one of the largest in the class and can be increased to 710 litres as the rear seat can slide forward. With rear seats folded flat, you get a substantial 1,540 litres. There are petrol and diesel engine options with differing power outputs, and my model is the entry-level B180 Sport priced at €31,188 (£26,980) with a punchy four-cylinder 136hp 1.3-litre petrol unit and standard seven-speed auto gearbox. The 0-100kph time is 9.0 seconds and top speed is 212kph (132mph). Emissions are 125g/km and average fuel consumption is 16.8kpl (47.1mpg). While the model is labelled Sport, don’t expect the performance on this entry version to be very sporty. However it is perfectly adequate for normal needs and the suspension set-up reflects
the targeted family use by putting the emphasis on allround comfort. With light precise steering and a nice overall balance, the B Class drives well with excellent cornering composure and its higher driving position provides good all-round visibility. Overall the B Class comes across as an ideal family car, offering space, comfort and practicality. Rivals include the BMW 2 Series Active Tourer and the Volkswagen Golf SV and while both are strong contenders, in my view neither can match the level of kudos which comes with the famous Mercedes Benz three-pointed star.
CHINESE automaker BYD has debuted its all-electric ESeed GT concept car at the Shanghai Motor Show - and dare it be said about a car from that nation, it looks pretty sexy. While the Chinese motor industry has been making giant strides, it has not up until now been famed for the aesthetic beauty of its products. BYD decided to change that by bringing together the expertise of three international design experts, Wolfgang Egger, BYD Global Design Director, Juan Ma Lopez, BYD Global Exterior Design Director and Michele Jauch-Paganetti, BYD Global Interior Design Director. They have taken inspiration from the company’s home country’s traditions to use what they call ‘Dragon Face’ design language. In this they attempted to apply the ele-
ments of a Chinese dragon into a super car design, such as headlights resembling ‘dragon whiskers,’ a ‘dragon ridge’ on its roof, tail and seats and ‘dragon-scale’ features on its door panels. It also boasts a three-screen interconnection, a retractable steering wheel plus a ‘BYD heart’ and other technologies. BYD adheres to its ‘technology based, innovation oriented’ concept. With its solid R&D strength and innovative development model, it has achieved comprehensive development, playing a decisive role in many fields such as automobiles, rail transit, electronics and the renewable energy-related business (solar and energy storage). THE Spanish sailing team is starting to look good for medalling in next year ’s Tokyo Olympics after a series of excellent results at the World Cup in Genoa (Italy), which also served as an Olympic qualifier. Iker Martínez and Olga Maslivets took gold in the Nacra 17 class on Saturday, then on Sunday Alex Muscat (silver) and Joan Cardona (bronze) made the podium in the Finn class. In addition, six other crews have been classified among the top 10 in six of the eight classes in the competition. BARCELONA are on the verge of claiming the La Liga title, with their next game against Levante quite likely to be the match they wrap it up. They beat Real Sociedad 2-1 in the 33rd round of games this weekend without never really getting out of second gear. They certainly never reached the performance levels they did in last week’s Champions League triumph against Manchester United, though credit should go to Real Sociedad for putting up a spirited fight. They defended well in the first half, holding Barcelona at bay until the 44th minute when central defender Clement Lenglet got a head to the ball to put Barca into the lead. Real Sociedad didn’t let their heads drop and equalised in the 62nd minute when Juanmi netted the ball following a slide-rule pass from Mikel Merino. In the Nacra 17 class Ben Saxton and Nicola Boniface (GBR) held a seven-point lead heading into the Medal Race so the advantage was theirs. The British team had a tough start and found themselves sandwiched in the pack. Meanwhile the Spaniards, New Zealand’s Gemma Jones and Jason Saunders and Argentina’s Santiago Lange and Cecilia Carranza Saroli pushed ahead. Jones and Saunders led at the mid-point but the Spaniards attacked and grabbed the lead. The Argentinians then went on the attack and picked off the Spaniards on the final downwind.
Lange and Saroli claimed the race win which propelled them into the bronze medal position. The Spaniards finished second and when Saxton and Boniface followed in sixth, gold was officially theirs by a single point. “For us it was important to get a medal today,” said Martinez. “We only noticed where the British were on the second upwind. We hadn’t noticed them as we were too busy so we fought hard to pass the ones in front. “We’ve been working very hard. We have a new boat and we struggled in Palma. We were not fast enough and we weren’t good enough. This week was a very light week so we know that we can perform in the light but that doesn’t mean we will perform in the medium or strong winds. “We’re still far away from other guys we’ve beaten this week, Ben for example. The Italians and New Zealand were also very strong this week. We’re a long way away from them.”
