Fitting way to remember local ‘legend’ FRIENDS of the late Mojacar c h a r a c t e r, I a n ‘T h e Legend’ Wadsworth, came up with a fitting way to remember the ‘all-round nice guy.’ The talented singer, DJ, sign writer and artist passed aw ay in No v e m b e r a t th e age of 67. Knowing he was an anim a l l o v e r a n d h a d adopted dog Jack when his previous owner was unable to loo k a f t e r h i m , Ian ’s close mates Andy Perry and Lemon Lounge owner Chris Lowe decided to donate in his name t o l o c a l a n i mal charities the lion’s share of money raised from selling off his possessions. Last week, Andy presented Chrissie Cremore from PAWS-PATAS, Penny Compton from the Animal Protection Society Albox (APSA), and Tracy Taylor from Helping Animals Almanzora (HAA) each with €400 at a gathering of Ian’s friends. PAWS-PATAS will put the money towards the charity shelter’s quarantine unit and APSA and HAA will allocate their money to vets’ fees. All three associations are honouring Ian’s memory. Chrissie will put forward ‘Legend’ as a rescue puppy name. The latest male dog to come into HAA’s care has been called Waddy, another of Ian’s nicknames. APSA will name an area of

and very little money, Andy explained. Sa dly he w a s una ble to speak towards the end of his life, but Andy told EWN “he
must have been thinking he might not make it,” writing a n ‘in the e ve nt of my death’ letter. Ia n le ft ins truc tions to sell such belongings as he had. Andy and Chris also orga nis e d a n a uc tion of Ian’s artwork, which raised over €500. In all Ian’s friends collected €1,630. Andy and partner Carolyn D ue rde n de a lt w ith Ia n’s service and cremation here, and friends in Manchester raised the money to makeup the shortfall to foot the bill and to fulfill Ian’s last wish for his ashes to be buried alongside his parents near where he was brought up. Andy said Ian will be greatly missed by everyone who got to know him during his years in Mojacar. “He was helpful, kind and generous. He’d do anything for anybody, and he didn’t say a bad word about anyone. He contributed a lot to this community. “He was a well-loved guy.”

112 call outs THE 112 emergency call out service dealt with 1,225 incidents across the province between 3pm on Easter Friday and midnight on Easter Sunday, 1.3 per cent more than last year. More than 500 calls were for health matters and 255 related to public safety. There were 116 calls connected to traffic circulation and 55 related to fires.

Death threats lead to illegal arms seizure REPORTS of making death threats against an exgirlfriend led to the arrest of a Roquetas de Mar man on illegal arms possession and gender-based violence charges. Guardia Civil launched an investigation into MM after his former partner claimed he had threatened to kill her while she was dropping her daughter off at school. She also claimed he had made similar threats on previous occasions, wielding a gun he usually carried. The investigations revealed the 51-year-old suspect had a criminal record for violence, illegal ownership of weapons and a robbery in Castalla in Alicante along with two accomplices. The thieves gagged the victims and hit one on the head with a gun before making off with cash, jewellery and four long-barrelled firearms. The Guardia set up protection for the woman while looking for MM and waiting on legal authorisation to carry out searches. Plain clothes officers caught up with him in a Roquetas supermarket car park. Officers narrowed down possible locations
STASH: The Guardia Civil found arms and ammunition hidden behind a false ceiling. where the detainee had hidden illegal weapons to a Roquetas pub. An exhaustive search of the premises led to the discovery of a rifle with the serial number filed off, an air pistol, a silencer,
walkie-talkies and a large amount of ammunition stashed behind a false ceiling. A court in Roquetas ruled the suspect should be held in prison without bail.
Infrastructure investment approved THE Almeria provincial council has rubber stamped infrastructure investments in various municipalities adding up to nearly €3 million. The Levante region accounts for approximately €1.8 million of the funding. The biggest chunk, €561,000, is earmarked for improvements to rural roads in Nijar aimed at benefitting the local agriculture sector. The second largest amount is the just over €513,000 destined for a pavillion for Huercal-Overa’s municipal sports complex.
The new indoor facilities will be used for sports including handball, basketball, badminton and tennis. A further €222,000 will be spent on upgrading country roads in Cuevas del Almanzora. In Turre and Los Gallardos there will be investments in updating water supply infrastructure, with allocations of €167,000 and just short of €192,000 respectively. Also planned is replacing the natural grass of Sorbas’s seven-aside football ground with artificial turf,
firstly to save on water consumption, and to make it possible for the pitch to be used daily for matches and training sessions. The Almanzora Valley and Los Velez regions stand to benefit from a significant share of the investment funds. More than €205,000 goes towards a municipal swimming pool and changing rooms in the El Higueral area of Tijola. There are also plans for upgrades to rural roads in Velez-Rubio, Chrivel and Maria.

Rich with history THIS picture of a fairytale-like castle comes from Castilla y Leon which celebrated its annual regional holiday yesterday (Wednesday). The Alcazar de Segovia (Sergovia Fortress in English) lies in the province of the same name in Castilla y Leon. Castilla y Leon became one of Spain’s 17 autonomous communities in 1983. It is made up of the historical Kingdoms of Leon and part of Castilla which both existed before Spain was unified after the Reconquista in the Medieval era.
The region is made up of nine provinces, home to almost 2,337,520 people, according to census data. It covers an area of 94,223 squarekilometres, making it the largest region in Spain and the third biggest in Europe. Castila y Leon has no official capital, but most of its administrative agencies are based in Valladolid City. The region started to form when the Kingdom of Asturias, a Christian stronghold in an otherwise Muslim Spain, began pushing south. They reached the area which is
Gang of thieves GUARDIA CIVIL uncovered a gang of burglars operating in the AlmeriaMurcia border area. Guardia said the suspected thieves broke into at least 11 warehouses, farms and homes in Pulpi, Puerto Lumbreras and Lorca, stealing items ranging from tools to mobiles and TVs, which they later sold. The gang operated mainly at night, targeting isolated properties. Working in collaboration with Local Police, Guardia investigations led to the suspects after officers clocked two

One, a moped, made off before officers could identify the rider, but they recognised the individual riding the quad bike as a local teenager. Surveillance operations resulted in the detention in Lorca of a 19 and a 25year old from La Campana-Lorca, a 33-year-old from Pulpi and a 17-yearold. Officers found stolen goods in the gang members’ property, among them a hunting rifle.

Fugitive faces 10 years behind bars POLICE detained a suspected drug trafficker wanted by the French authorities in Roquetas de Mar. MGT, 56, faces 10 years behind bars for his role in a French-Spanish criminal network dedicated to illegal narcotics and psychotropic substance sales. The arrest was the fruit of police cooperation under the European Network of Fugitive Active Search Teams (ENFAST) project. Bordeaux police arrested three

French citizens in April 2017 for receiving 130 kilos of cannabis transported from Spain in a van. Spanish police identified the three from security camera footage from a service station in Irun near the French-Spanish border, along with three Spaniards. The French authorities wanted the Spanish criminals arrested and extradited to France to face justice. After two years of investigation an arrest warrant was then issued.

Easter wash-out DISAPPOINTING weather over the Easter weekend scuppered holidaymakers’ plans to lap up spring sunshine lounging on the beach. But the Holy Week celebrations in Almeria were by no means a complete washout. The rain mainly held off for the traditional Holy Week processions and local authorities reported good visitor numbers. The unseasonal conditions did force the cancellation of Cuevas del Almanzora’s Easter Friday morning procession however. It was the same story in Almeria City on Easter Sunday morning. The ASHAL Almeria hospitality sector association summed up the holiday in the

Sacred Semana Santa THE Mojacar Embrujo Mojaquero choir and the municipal music band gave a concert of sacred music as part of the Easter celebrations, performing to a full house at the Multiple Uses Centre. The flamenco ‘saetas’ and traditional Holy Week songs, like Costalero, Cadiz Cofrade, and Encarnacion Coronada, drew the loudest applause from the 300-strong audience. This year concertgoers were asked to make a small donation of €3 to the Santa Maria parish church, raising €700 in total.

Going greener PULPI is set to look greener. The local authority has signed up to the provincial government’s Savia Plan designed to encourage the creation, regeneration and improvement of municipal parks and gardens. Under the plan the council has taken delivery of some 200 plants and trees from the provincial nursery valued at just less than €10,000. The council will extend the garden running along the right-hand side of the Nogalte Rambla, establishing a new green area next to the Multiuse Building with 20 fan palms, 40 tipuana tipu trees and 20 chinaberry trees. A further 55 tipuana trees will be used to create a shaded corridor on the San Juan de Los Terreros seafront promenade. Also in San Juan, the council will plant 36 white poplars on the left side of the sports ground.
Robberies cleared up POLICE reported they had cleared up two robberies, helped by forensic evidence. Investigations began after the owner of a van reported it had been stolen while parked on the street in Huercal de Almeria. That same day there was a break-in at a bar in Santa Maria del Aguila in Ejido, the robber getting away with a tobacco vending machine and a slot machine. O ff i c e r s l o c a t e d t h e stolen vehicle on waste ground a few days later. The two stolen machines had been left just a few metres away. DNA samples and fingerprints taken from the van and the machines led to the identification of the suspected thief, n a m e d a s 3 0 y e a r- o l d AB.

Artful action on plastic ART and raising awareness on the threat of discarded plastic to the world’s seas are going handin-hand in Nijar. Sculptor Encarna Morales has designed innovative artworks which serve the double purpose of adding eye-catching features to key points around the municipality and acting as receptacles for plastic lids and high-density polyethylene. The first of the dual-purpose cre a tio n s p ro d u c e d in iron by Shovelito Mattman was unveiled last week in Aguamarga. Fashioned to resemble a sea u rc h in , it s tan d s n e x t to the tourist office. The initiative is a joint collaboration between Nijar’s Tourism, Historic Heritage and Beaches D e p artme n t an d the R odalquilarte art movement. “We are aware of the global problem of plastics, and therefore some years ago we launched campaigns to clean up coves with volunteers and schoolchildren, or as with this initiative where we b rin g art an d en v iro n me nta l awareness together,” commented

Marine life protection talk is topic of the month THE Dames in Turre will be welcoming back Alex Lawson from the Equinac Mojacar marine life rescue organisation as guest speaker at the group’s next meeting. Equinac Mojacar is on call 24/7 rescuing injured marine life on our beaches. Alex last gave a talk to the Dames in Turre in 2017, and since then pollution and plastic has become increasingly recognised as a serious problem for our planet. So many marine animals are injured or killed by plastics and other waste products deposited on our beaches, which is heartbreaking to see, and the Dames hope by the end of the meeting they will be able to better appreciate Equinac’s hard work. The meeting will be next Monday at 11am at the Hostal Rural in Turre. Dames in Turre is a friendship group raising money for local charities, and always welcomes guests. A BRAND new skate park is up and running in Mojacar. Located next to the municipal football ground, it offers skateboarding and skating enthusiasts a range of challenging features to test out their skills, including a mini-ramp, a wave, funboxes, pyramids, slides and an ollie-box. The actual 235sqm skating area is grey quartz on a concrete base with the sliding surfaces formed by high density HPI sheets. The whole facility has marked skate lines with lighting and is safely enclosed. A team of provincial government technical architects designed the €140,000 facilities in accordance with current technical and administrative regulations. Mojacar Sports Councillor Ana Garcia said she was pleased with the completed project, which has been on the drawing board for some time. The council said the new park is an ideal place for young people to meet up and practise these increasingly popular sports.

TV role for animal charity PAWS-PATAS will feature in a forthcoming episode of the popular Channel 4 TV show A Place in the Sun. Mother and daughter Cath and Kate were looking for their perfect property on the Costa Almeria and wanted to know about an animal charity they could get involved with. Chrissie Cremore from PAWS-PATAS welcomed their invitation to walk some of the dogs, especially as she was coping with a fractured
foot at the time. Programme presenter Danni Menzies was delighted to have the opportunity to take

FREEDOM: Spain saw its ranking increase this year.
Press freedom By Joe Gerrard SPAIN has ranked 29th on a table of the countries with the most press freedom, up two places compared to last year. Reporters Without Borders’ (RSF) World Press Freedom Ranking scored 180 countries for the table. RSF said there had been a ‘clear improvement’ to the situation in Cataluña although it remains a hostile environment for radio and television reporters. RSF said there were around 40 verbal and physical attacks on journalists in the region over the last 18 months.
The organisation said reforms to Spain’s RTVE public broadcaster in 2017 to shield it from government interference was good news. But RSF added that hatred for journalists existed in Spain as it did in other Western democracies. Spain came behind Cyprus and ahead of Lithuania in the table. Norway, Finland and Sweden came first, second and third respectively while Germany came 13th and Britain came 33rd. RSF awarded countries zero to 100 points based on the representation of differing opinions, media independence, the environment for journalists, the legal framework, transparency, support infrastructure and abuses.

Although Belgium is a multi-faith country, the Belgian royal family is Catholic by tradition and Felipe has close links to Spain and its culture. His great-aunt Fabiola de Mora y Aragon was Spanish and she and her husband, King Baudouin, possessed a property in Motril (Granada) where Felipe often holidayed as a child.

Driving licences in Spain LIVING in Spain can bring with it an array of issues which may not have been encountered when living in the UK. There are lots of things to consider, and we are here to help try to make the transition and life in Spain a little easier by compiling a series of helpful facts and figures relating to a variety of topics. If you are planning on living in Spain on a permanent basis, it’s a good idea to have a Spanish driving licence - in fact it is mandatory after a while. Here are some guidelines for current and new drivers on how to do this quickly and easily. If you already have a valid EU (European Union) Community or an EEA (European Economic Area) driving licence and meet the minimum driving age in Spain, you can use it for the first two years of residence in Spain, although you must register your details with the traffic authorities after six months. You can register at your Central Register of Drivers and Minor Offenders of the Provincial Traffic Headquarters. If you don’t obtain a Spanish driver’s licence after two years of residence in Spain and are caught driving, you can face a fine of around €200. Visit: www.dgt.es to find out more. Once the process is under way, you will have to adhere to the same conditions as Spanish licence holders: Have reached minimum age in Spain for the specific category of vehicle you want to drive, Relevant medical checks, Renew or exchange the licence after the first two years’ residence in Spain. If an EU licence is renewed in Spain it effectively converts it into a Spanish EU licence, which then needs to be renewed every 10 years up to the age of 65, and every five years after 65. The new regulation which requires new residents to exchange their licences for a Spanish one, was enforced three years ago. As such, Spain has agreements with more than 20 countries, allowing drivers to exchange a foreign driver’s licence for its equivalent. To find out more, check with your home country’s consulate in Spain or the Spanish Traffic Authority at www.sede.dgt.gob.es. To exchange your licence, you will need to fill out an application form that is issued by the Provincial Traffic Headquarters. (See the above website). The following documents will be required: Proof of identity (original passport and a copy), Proof of your residence for six months (Certificate of Registration in the Central Aliens Register - the NIE number), Application form (in Spanish), Current valid driving licence to be exchanged (original and a copy), Written declaration stating that you don’t have another driving licence of the same class in another country, Written declaration stating that you have not been suspended or banned, Two recent passport size photographs (32 by 25 mm), Medical fitness report (visit the DGT website for information). Holidaying boy dies in shooting A 12-YEAR-OLD boy died after an incident involving an air gun in a town just inland from the Costa del Sol. Local sources say the ‘foreign’ family were spending the Easter holidays in Coin in the Guadalhorce Valley when the accident happened. Paramedics, Guardia Civil and Local Police responded to the emergency call, but they could not save the boy’s life. An investigation into the incident has been opened by the authorities.

Processions called off EASTER processions in Sevilla City and others were called off after heavy rain struck parts of Spain on Friday. Four out of the seven processions scheduled to go ahead in Sevilla City were suspended following rain and hail. For out of five of the parades planned for Valladolid City in Castilla y Leon were also pulled on Thursday. Only one, the Procession of the Bitterness of Christ, went ahead. A procession celebrating the Last Supper in Alicante City had to remain in the courtyard of the Maria Auxiliadora after rain struck the Costa Blanca region.
Poet honoured URUGUAYAN poet Ida Vitale has been in Spain to be awarded the Miguel de Cervantes 2018 Prize for Literature in the Spanish Language. She was presented the prize by king Felipe VI on Tuesday at a ceremony in Alcala de
Henares. Yesterday she attended a lunch with the Kong and Queen at the Royal Palace in Madrid which brought together academics, publishers, critics, teachers, booksellers and writers to pay tribute to the her.

Strikes force flight diversions SEVEN flights bound for Portugal had to refuel in the airports of Bilbao, Madrid and Sevilla due to strikes last week. Sources from Spain’s Aena airport management company said four stopped in Sevilla, two in the capital and one in Bilbao. A total of 44 flights had to refuel in Spanish airports on the previous day, Aena said. The diversions follow strikes called by Portugal’s National Union of Transporters of Dangerous Substances. The walkouts were called off on Thursday but Portugal’s Infrastructure Minster Pedro Nuno Santos said the return to normal would be gradual.

QROPS: The pros and cons of transferring your UK pension Qualifying Recognised Overseas Pension Scheme (QROPS) are widely seen as beneficial for expatriate retirees, but are by no means a one-size-fits-all solution. Here we explore some advantages and disadvantages. Tax efficiency Currently, Spain residents can transfer UK pensions into an EU/EEA-based QROPS without taxation. However, transfers outside the bloc attract the 25% UK ‘overseas transfer charge’ of 25%. This may be extended post-Brexit, so time may be limited for tax-free transfers. Funds in a QROPS are sheltered from future UK taxes on income and gains and lifetime pension allowance penalties. QROPS funds only become taxable once you start taking benefits in your country of residence. When accessing QROPS or taking UK pension lump sums and income, the general Spanish income

Freedom from UK rules… to a point Funds in a QROPS are no longer governed by UK pension legislation, so are protected from future changes to UK rules. However, you could still be subject to UK legislation – and taxation – if you transfer funds again to an unapproved scheme or permanently return to the UK. Where HMRC deems its rules have been broken, it can charge a 55% tax penalty on the transfer amount – potentially even if you had moved funds before the rules changed.
New Geopark A MOUNTAIN range in Galicia has been chosen as one of 11 natural areas globally which will be designated as a World Geopark by the UN. UNESCO chose the Serro de Courel, in Lugo Province, among others including from Chile, Ecuador, Peru, Norway and China to have the status. UNESCO said the Courel range was home to ‘remarkable’ evidence of ancient gold mining by the Romans which reflected the relationship between humans and nature. There is currently a total of 147 UNESCO World Geoparks across the globe.
Postal votes SPAIN’S postal service has handled more than 1.3 million requests for postal votes for this Sunday’s general election and for the Valencian Regional vote. Andalucia was the region with the highest numbers of postal votes requested at almost 214,330, followed by the Madrid Region with almost 194,130 and Valencia, 175,466.

Holiday push SPAIN’S regions have launched advertising campaigns in Britain to draw in tourists from the country and combat the expected fallout from Brexit. Cataluña is the latest region to launch a campaign aimed at British travellers. Its Legends of Cataluña publicity drive, backed by €1 million in regional funding, is set to begin in London and Manchester on Sunday May 26. It comes as provinces including Malaga and Cadiz set out their stalls at the World Travel Market in London earlier this year. The former is looking to hold as many British tourists as possible on the Costa del Sol. Spain’s national tourist board has also launched a series of events designed to address the concerns of companies in the sector as Brexit approaches. It comes as the Spanish Confederation of Hotels and Tourist Accommodation (CEHAT) predicted Spain could have lost up to three million tourists, had Brexit gone ahead on Friday April 12. Concerns have eased since Britain and the EU27 agreed to delay Brexit until Thursday October 31. Industry data from the Costa Blanca showed bookings from British travellers increased by 12 per cent this April compared to last year.
Election looms By Joe Gerrard BREXIT has been delayed until October, but there was little respite for British political parties this week as it looked increasingly likely they will be contesting May’s European Parliament election. British Prime Minister Theresa May has repeatedly said she wants Brexit to take place before Britain has to hold the vote. But the legal groundwork has been laid after Parliament was obliged to pass a ‘day of poll order’ mechanism earlier this month in light of ongoing uncertainty over Britain’s withdrawal. The country’s Electoral Commission, which would oversee the vote if it does take place, said having to manage a ballot which may not happen was ‘unprecedented.’ A Brexit deal would have to be passed before Thursday May 23 if the vote is to be avoided. The ruling Conservatives have the most to lose from the vote. Early signs are that the support for the Tories could collapse as pro-Brexit sup-

THE WEEK IN POLITICS By Joe Gerrard SPANISH politicians and voters are not the only ones hoping that this Sunday’s election will end 10 months of political deadlock. Sources close to top EU officials have reportedly said they are hoping that a stable government with a clear parliamentary majority will take charge after the ballot. ‘Spanish politics cannot continue to stumble along,’ the sources were quoted in Spanish media as saying. The comments come in reference to the failure of the ruling left leaning Partido Socialista (PSOE) to pass its draft budget for this year. This was the factor which led Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez to call the snap election in March. They also follow years of political uncertainty which began in 2015. An election in December last year saw thenruling conservative Partido Popular’s (PP) absolute majority wiped out, with the party going from 187 seats to

UNCERTAIN: Deadlock has plagued Spanish politics since 2015. 123. The election was also novel because it saw the entry of the centrist Ciudadanos and the leftist Podemos into the Congress of Deputies lower house for the first time. Both took seats from the PP and PSOE, upending what had largely been a two-party system up to that time. Efforts began to cobble together coalitions on both the
left and the right. But neither side could muster the necessary support to command a majority in the Congress of Deputies, leading to another election the following year. Little change came from the 2016 vote which saw the PP claw back a handful of seats to reach a total of 137 deputies, still far short of a majority. The PP had called
for stability at the time in the face of what they branded as a rise of radicalism and populism. The two elections took place against a backdrop of economic instability unleashed by the last recession and corruption scandals which benefitted the insurgent Ciudadanos and Podemos. The 2016 election also took place in the wake of the Brexit referendum, closely watched in Spain and elsewhere in Europe. Now in 2019, the spectre of uncertainty continues to haunt Spanish politics. A new party, far-right Vox, looks set to enter Congress after exploiting anti-migrant feelings which will complicate efforts to build coalitions and a parliamentary majority further. The jury is still out on whether stability will return to Spanish politics.
Election day VOTERS in Spain go to the polls this Sunday to cast their ballots for the snap general election. The election was called at the start of March after the ruling left-leaning Partido Socialista (PSOE) effectively had its budget plans vetoed by pro-Catalan independence parties. That left Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez no choice but to go to the polls. Campaigning is now reaching its pre-election climax, with party leaders having criss-crossed the country to try and win over undecided voters. That will come to an end at midnight on Friday, after which Spanish law prohibits campaigning until voters go to the polls. Polling stations open at 9am and close at 8pm. After they close their doors the provisional counting of results will begin. The general counting of votes begins on Wednesday after ballot papers arrive from abroad. The deadline for the count to finish is Saturday May 4. There is likely to be some indication of who will win the election after the provisional votes are counted, but the official results will be declared no later than Monday May 13. The new members of the Congreso are then set to meet on Tuesday May 21. With the results looking close, it is unclear how long it will take for parties to reach coalition deals. Anteco Systems, which trades under the name AnyTech365, is among the companies which have made it onto the Financial Times most recent ‘Europe’s Fastest Growing Companies’ table. The table, which ranks companies based on annual turnover from 2014 to 2017, showed the Marbella and Torremolinos-based firm had an absolute revenue growth of more than 2.5 per cent. Its 2017 earnings stood at €5 million.

Bubble fears rule plan OFFICIALS with Spain’s Ecology Ministry have drawn up plans to tighten regulations on the renewable energy market amidst fears excessive demand could fuel a speculative bubble. Figures from Red Electrica de España (REE), which is in charge of managing and granting renewable energy access permits, shows current applications amount to more than 144,400 megawatts of power. Ministry forecasts under its Energy and Climate plan predicted the amount would be 67,500 megawatts. Concerns over a potential bubble previously led the Ministry to increase the guar-

It was hoped this would stave off those who planned to buy the permits to sell on at a profit. REE figures show power generated under the permit system totalled 28,400 megawatts, with permission granted for a further 45,900 and requests for 70,500. Fears about speculation are new to the energy market. Previous permit rules coal and nuclear power plants and other installations contained no measures preventing speculation because it was thought no
company would sell such assets on at a profit. But the arrival of renewable energy sources such as solar panels and wind turbines has reduced investment costs, lowering market barriers to entry and opening it to speculation. Officials fear if that happens, permits could become sought after solely for investment reasons, distorting the market and creating the conditions for a later crash. Spain’s National Commission of Markets and Competition (CNMC) watchdog would have to approve any regulation changes put forward to make sure they do not harm competition.
SPAIN’S Tax Agency has warned about politicians increasingly using corporate entities to reduce payment burdens as four government ministers were previously found to be doing so. The agency said the use of sociedades patrimoniales (patrimonial societies in English) allowed some to play the tax system by billing and buying through them. It comes after Pedro Duque, Isabel Celaa, Nadia Calviño and Maxim Huerta were found to be using sociedades patrimoniales. Huerta resigned as Culture Minister less than a week after taking office over his tax arrangements.

Bank merger costs higher RESTRUCTURING costs incurred by the merger between Spain’s Unicaja and Liberbank are estimated at €317 million, three times more than previously thought according to industry analysis. Credit Suisse’s report on the merger showed the cost of the merger itself would be €101 million, 10 per cent of the combined cost of both banks. Credit Suisse has also cut its estimates of expected
profits of the unified banks by between 15 and 17 per cent due to Spain’s overall economic outlook going forward. The merged Unicaja and Liberbank entity is estimated make €175 million in profit in 2019. The new entity is expected to net more than €1 billion. The new bank is set to become the sixth largest in Spain with assets of €92 billion.

LEAPY LEE SAYS IT OTHERS THINK IT I TOO, was shocked and saddened by the terrible devastation of Notre Dame in Paris last week. At the time of writing, no group has claimed responsibility and no blame yet been apportioned. ‘Appears to be accidental’ is a phrase being bandied about. This reaction being the usual, ‘petrified to offend anyone’ attitude which complacent European Christians seem to adopt for almost any atrocity which isn’t actually followed by a ‘we are responsible,’ sign, emblazoned in sky writing above their heads! However, before I am once again accused of some kind of phobia or another, let me run a few facts by you. In 2016, three females, with radical ties to Islam, were arrested in a street adjacent to Notre Dame; along with a lorry containing six gas cylinders and Arabic propaganda papers. In the violence which ensued, two police officers were injured with one being stabbed in the chest. After the incident police declared they were ‘in a race against time’ before a major terrorist attack took place. Also in that year, a Catholic priest was murdered by ‘two soldiers’ of a group calling themselves Islamic State (ISLE). Last year, in France there were 873 reported attacks on Christian churches and 1,063 anti-Christian acts. Bearing all these facts in mind, quite frankly, if this Notre Dame disaster is put down to coincidence, then I

COINCIDENCE?: Over the last few years there have been attacks on Christian artefacts and holy shrines. truly do give up. Just to drive my point home, as I write, reports are coming in from Sri Lanka of seven explosions, targeting six churches and hotels, which have killed nearly 300 people and injured hun-
dreds more. And all of these recent atrocities are occurring during one of the most sacred Christian periods of the year. Here are a few more facts for the disbelieving snowflakes and ‘infidels.’ Over the last few
years, all across Europe, there have been thousands of attacks on Christian artefacts and holy shrines. This year, in March alone, four churches in Germany were vandalised or torched. And still the silence from the authorities is deafening! Don’t take my word for this cowardly inaction. Cast an eye over a report last week on PI - News, a German news site. I quote: ‘Hardly anyone writes about the increasing attacks on Christian symbols. There is an eloquent silence in both France and Germany about the scandal of the desecrations and the origin of the perpetrators. Not a word or even the slightest hint which could in any way lead to the suspicion of immigrants. It is not the perpetrators who are in danger of being ostracised, but those who dare to associate the desecration of Christian symbols with immigrant imports. They are instead, accused of hatred, hate speech and racism.’ Unquote. Well, be that as it may, I am utterly convinced that unless the authorities get some bottle and at least publically recognise the problems of increasing ‘Christianophobia,’ some form of rightwing ‘tit for tat’ will begin to occur. IT’S no secret that institutions develop their own language in the interests of time and confidentiality. Restaurant staff use various terms to describe their customers, sometimes derogatory, occasionally complimentary. So, when next in your favourite restaurant, consider how you’re maybe being described. While lots of regular customers are referred to by what they regularly order or their idiosyncrasies (for example, ‘extra garlic,’ ‘doggie-bag lady,’ ‘lousy tipper’), ‘PIA’ is code for ‘Pain In the A*** ,’ ‘HAF’ means ‘Had A Few,’ and ‘FF’ in the reservation book against your name means you’re ‘F***ing Fussy.’ Oops! Doctors too have their codes. While a ‘GLM’ is a ‘Good-Looking Mum,’ with ‘GLL’ (Great-Looking Legs) and an ‘FLK’ a ‘Funny-Looking Kid,’ a ‘TBP’ is a ‘Total Bloody Pain,’ a ‘GPO’ is ‘Good for Parts Only,’ and ‘TEETH’ is ‘Tried Everything Else, Try Homeopathy.’ Plus, cases which are ‘LOB’ (Load Of B*****ks) and individuals who are ‘TF Bundy’ (Totally F***ed But Unfortunately Not Dead Yet). ‘Digging for worms’ is varicose vein surgery, the ‘departure lounge’ the geriatric ward, while ‘handbag positive’ is a

confused patient (usually elderly lady) lying on a hospital bed clutching a handbag. While the most common call-out for ambulance services is to elderly ladies who’ve fallen over (a ‘nan-down’) and the special ambulances used to transport obese patients are ‘fat trucks,’ regular visitors to A&E on Friday/Saturday nights are also classified. ‘UBI’ is an ‘Unexplained Beer Injury,’ a ‘PFO,’ a drunken patient who’s injured himself falling over, while a ‘PGT,’ ‘got thumped’ instead. One doctor in court had to explain ‘TTFO’ (Told To F*** Off). Fortunately, he came out with: ‘To Take Fluids Orally.’ Oops again! Call centres have similar codes for techni-
cal helplines. A blatantly obvious query is categorised as an ‘RTFM on line 1,’ code for ‘Read The F***ing Manual.’ Which reminds me of a similar code used in East Anglia hospitals until fairly recently: ‘NFN,’ - ‘Normal For Norfolk.’ Finally, as for ‘B’ (Brexit) Day, anyone know when this will be? WITH regard to the charges levied on our group of ‘illegal’ homes to be ‘legalised,’ and your response of March 14, would the ‘bill payer’ change if the original developer was still trading and being encouraged by the town hall to deal directly with the Junta? Unfortunately, David Searl no. The buyer of You and the Law a property buys it with all in Spain rights that go with it and also with charges outstanding. You could have obtained a Certificado Urbanistico from your town hall at the time of purchase which would have revealed this. The 15-year limit to recover debt does not apply here because your house is now part of a Sistema de Cooperación, in which the town hall pays a part of the costs and the homeowner the remainder. Because your inclusion in this ‘co-operation system’ is recent, the time limit does not apply. If it is any consolation, thousands of homeowners along the Spanish coasts are suffering similar charges. Even more annoying is the knowledge that the original developer has got away with not paying.

AFTER 17 years living in this country I have to agree with your article (Thank you to the Spanish health system - Issue 1760). Always an excellent service. Only three weeks ago I rang at 8.45am for a non-urgent check up with our doctor. The receptionist’s reply was ‘9.15?’ Then it was agreed that 10.30am would be perfect. Always the same doctor, sometimes a few minutes late, but sometimes out before the actual appointed time. Torrevieija hospital is more than first class. Sue Gell

Euthanasia I WAS so saddened to read the article about a man who helped his wife with multiple sclerosis to die who could go on trial at a gender violence court (Issue 1763). It is such a sensitive and important subject, and everybody is entitled to their own opinion. But while debates about euthanasia are being carried out, this case proves we must never forget that there are real people, with real lives who are suffering and have been for a long time. A Spanish nurse turned up to do routine obs. She didn’t even acknowledge the patient let alone the visitors. Without speaking she checked her temperature, then left. Last night at 10.15pm, my friend rang her bell and when a nurse came she asked her to help her to make her more HEALTH SYSTEM: An environment of comfortable. She said she would come collective togetherness. back. She did - at 7.30am. So don’t think for one minute that the Spanish way is superior to that of the UK. Lots of Spanish nurses are severely lacking in social skills. In my experience of nursing in the UK and Spain, the vast majority of my colleagues have been caring people irrespective of nationality. ‘Staff of different colours, creeds, nationalities with a variety of languages, all performing their duties in an aura of separateness.’Actually they operate in an environment of collective togetherness and bring a wealth of expertise to their work. We don’t have mass immigration. But without the immigration we have, the NHS would simply not be able to function. I don’t know why you have seen inside a lot of London’s hospitals this winter. If it is to have received treatment for yourself, then I sincerely hope in future, you stay away from our overworked NHS and have the treatment in Son Espases. Yours sincerely, Pat Brudenell

VIOLENCE and abuse against women is not only morally abhorrent, it is also costing the Spanish economy billions. A new government report has claimed the cost of gender violence is equivalent to €185 for every person in Spain in the worst case. The estimated overall economic cost ranges between €1.3 billion and €8.5 billion. The latter figure is equivalent to more than one 10th of what Spain budgeted for welfare in 2017. Those costs do not take into account those incurred by the trauma inflicted on children and relatives who witness gender violence first-hand. The government estimates those are equivalent to billions in economic losses. Society clearly has incentives to eradicate the scourge of gender violence. If communities and the government could do more to spare women from mistreatment then they would be happier and free of violence-induced trauma. They would then be able to offer their talents in the workplace alongside the rest of us instead of suffering, often in silence, while their prospects dwindle. The wealth they create could be spent on helping to eradicate gender violence and offer more support to victims. Not only this, but it could be used to help reduce poverty, addiction and other factors that create the conditions for gender violence to thrive. But ultimately, we should never lose sight of the fact that the highest price for gender violence is paid by its victims.

Local faces in the frame LITTLE girls dressed as ballerinas, musicians, participants in the Moors and Christians celebrations, different generations of the same family. Just a handful of the different faces making up Mojacar ’s population who feature in a fascinating exhibition of photographs by Miguel Garcia Campoy.
The 50 black and white images on display at the municipal La Fuente Art Centre are a selection of the nearly 200 the photographer has taken so far for his Al-Mojacar project. Garcia Campoy wants to capture images of local residents, whether born or bred in the municipality or who have moved to Mojacar from
elsewhere, and preserve them for future generations. His idea is to photograph as many locals as possible to create an archive which will be kept at the town hall and serve as a time capsule to reflect the Mojacar of today. The photographer said he had chosen to capture the faces in black and white “because it makes everyone equal.” He has also chosen to make them very natural, spontaneous and unposed images. The e xhibition is ope n from 10a m to 1pm until next Sunday. However, Garcia Campoy plans to continue photographing local residents at the Multiple Uses Centre and expanding the

Feral cat fundraiser A KITTYKAT Almanzora Valley Easter raffle in Cantoria to raise funds and awareness about the group’s feral cat neutering programme netted €168. The project has the support of Cantoria Council, and it was Mayor Puri Sanchez who did the honours of drawing the winning numbers. Kittykat’s Jean and Ron Nield believe the area’s street cat situation is a matter of concern to many local residents. Jean reported that
people making a donation to the programme had commented on the need to use a humane way to manage the
feral cat population. KittyKat aims to trap, neuter and return feral cats to the street.

THE rural property market is starting to boom according to data from the National Statistics Office (INE). Last year, the purchase and sale of ‘rustic properties’ in Spain increased by 3.9 per cent compared to 2017. What’s more, 13.6 per cent of all property sales in Spain corresponded to rural real estate, with 138,906 sales of this type of property. Apart from farming, rural homes are increasingly used as second homes, holiday homes or tourism accommodation - this is particularly important given the steady population decline seen in country areas. According to a study by FEMP (Spanish Federation of Municipalities and Provinces) this is a real problem, with more than 4,000 Spanish municipalities having fewer than 1,000 inhabitants and being at risk

212kph (132mph). Emissions are 125g/km and average fuel consumption is 16.8kpl (47.1mpg). While the model is labelled Sport, don’t expect the performance on this entry version to be very sporty. However it is perfectly adequate for normal needs and the suspension set-up reflects the targeted family use by putting the emphasis on all-round comfort. With light precise steering and a nice overall balance, the B Class drives well with excellent cornering composure and its higher driving position provides good allround visibility. Overall the B Class comes across as an ideal family car, offering space, comfort and practicality. Rivals include the BMW 2 Series Active Tourer and the Volkswagen Golf SV and while both are strong contenders, in my view neither can match the level of kudos which comes with the famous Mercedes Benz three-pointed star.

50 years of the Nissan GT-R THE 2020 Nissan GT-R 50th Anniversary Edition has been unveiled, with the Japanese manufacturer promising its high performance will be usable by drivers of all standards. “A GT-R is about total balance management,” said Hiroshi Tamura, chief product specialist for the model. “It is not about chasing power figures, but creating a new GT-R, where no aspect has been overlooked. This is appropriate to celebrate the GT-R 50th anniversary.” Nissan engineers have managed to upgrade the car’s performance even though some people may have thought the refinement and performance of the GT-R’s 565-horsepower 3.8-litre V6 24-valve twin-turbocharged engine - each handcrafted by its own Takumi technician - was so high, there
was no room for improvement. New turbochargers providing tighter clearances and a 5 per cent increase in efficiency have been fitted. Overall, they provide sharper engine response in and out of corners, making the driving experience more rewarding and richer than ever before, according to Nissan. The GT-R features a revised six-speed dual-clutch transmission with a refined R mode, made for both road and track. It features more aggressive downshifts to better anticipate swift cornering exits, with gear selection happening during ABS engagement, resulting in reduced under steer and a more driver-intuitive feeling. The adaptive shift control is programmed to change shift schedules to fit the user’s driving style, making it possible
to drive according to the law on public roads, with full brute force available on the race track, without needing to manually change shift modes. The electronically controlled suspension has been tuned to provide better cornering stability and a smoother ride. The steering is more precise than ever, requiring minimal corrections at speeds of up to 300kph (186mph). A new

brake booster increases the initial braking response by engaging with less pedal stroke, resulting in enhanced stopping power and feel. The special edition car will come in three heritage-era, two-tone exterior colour com-
binations meant to represent the GT-R’s liveries from the Japan GP series; of which the original GT-R was born to compete in. Retired since the GT-R ‘R34’ model, Bayside (Wangan) Blue makes a return, complete with white racing stripes. A four-coat, double-
heat treatment process ensures a vivid blue with striking highlights and deep shadows. Blue accents on the wheel spokes are among several fine touches made to celebrate the GT-R's milestone. Pearl White with red stripes and Super Silver with white stripes round out the 50th Anniversary liveries.

AS the range of electric cars gets steadily longer the main obstacle to their take up remains pricing; but not for much longer, according to Bloomberg New Energy Finance. The analysts, who specialise in forecasting on a range of clean energy issues, now forecast that electric vehicles will be cheaper than their petrol equivalents by the end of 2022 - less than three years away. The forecast date has come down each year from 2029 (in 2017), then 2026 (in 2018). Key to the fall in costs, according to Bloomberg NEF analysts, is the price of batteries, the most expensive element of electric cars. These have been rapidly falling in recent years as production has upscaled.

BARCELONA are on the verge of claiming the La Liga title, with their next game against Levante quite likely to be the match they wrap it up. They beat Real Sociedad 2-1 in the 33rd round of games this weekend without never really getting out of second gear. They certainly never reached the performance levels they did in last week’s Champions League triumph against Manchester United, though credit should go to Real Sociedad for putting up a spirited fight. They defended well in the first half, holding Barcelona at bay until the 44th minute when central defender Clement Lenglet got a head to the ball to put Barca into the lead. Real Sociedad didn’t let their heads drop and equalised in the 62nd minute when Juanmi netted the ball following a slide-rule pass from Mikel Merino. Sevilla had started the match one point ahead of the Madrid side, but two disputed handball penalty decisions by referee Mateu Lahoz undid them. The second decision also saw Sevilla defender Sergio Escudero given a second yellow card, though the ball clearly rebounded onto his arm off his head. The first penalty was put away by Jaime Mata and Jorge Molina sank the second as well as scoring the final goal early in the second half.
HAT TRICK: Karim Benzema benefitted from goal keeping howlers. Valencia kept up their good run of form and climbed into fifth spot with a 2-1 win away to Real Betis. WINNER: Fognini took the Monte-Carlo title. ITALIAN Fabio Fognini followed up his defeat of 11-times champion Rafa Nadal in the semi-finals with a nerveless display to win the final of the Monte-Carlo Masters. He became the first Italian to win an ATP Masters title when he brushed aside Dusan Lajovic 6-3, 6-4 in one hour and 38 minutes. Speaking after the match he said: “I’m really, really happy. Nothing to say. I have to keep calm, maybe take a shower, re-
lax, and think about this because it’s something incredible.” The mercurial world number 13 became the lowest seeded player to lift the trophy since fellow No 13 seed Gustavo Kuerten’s title run in 1999. To call the win a surprise is an understatement. Capable of playing to the highest level, Fognini’s big problem is consistency, and he has not been on top form this year. He had lost all four of his clay court
matches coming into the tournament and had only one win out of his last eight tour-level matches. Fognini becomes only the fourth winner at Monte-Carlo since 2005, with Nadal dominating. The other names on the trophy are Djokovic (2013 and 2015) and Stan Wawrinka (2014). Now the clay court season moves on to Barcelona, where Nadal will hope to return to form and winning ways.
SPAIN have won back their place in the World Group of the Federation Cup after a two-year absence. Things were not looking good for the Spanish team when they found themselves 2-1 behind against Belgium on Sunday. But Carla Suárez Navarro stepped forward to turn the tie around. The 30-year-old did what she had to do to force a fifth rubber and beat Yanina Wickmayer in straight sets. Carla then teamed up with Garbiñe Muguruza to win the deciding match, 76(4), 2-6, 6-2, and send Spain back to the World Group. The tie had been level at 1-1 before Sunday’s play. Ysaline Bonaventure, who was subbed in
for Alison van Uytvanck, surprised Muguruza in their singles match. After coming back from losing the first set 6-4 it looked like Muguruza was back on course after taking the second 0-6. But Bonaventure dug in to take the deciding set 6-4. “It was one of the best matches of my career,” Bonaventure told reporters after the match. “So it was such a great feeling to play in front of the whole crowd. To get the support from my family and also the fans in Belgium. Fed Cup is something special. You don’t only play for yourself - you play for yourself and the team.” Unfortunately for her it was all to be for nothing as Spain stormed back to win the tie.

THE Spanish sailing team is starting to look good for medalling in next year ’s Tokyo Olympics after a series of excellent results at the World Cup in Genoa (Italy), which also served as an Olympic qualifier. Iker Martínez and Olga Maslivets took gold in the Nacra 17 class on Saturday, then on Sunday Alex Muscat (silver) and Joan Cardona (bronze) made the podium in the Finn class. In addition, six other crews have been classified among the top 10 in six of the eight classes in the competition. In the Nacra 17 class Ben Saxton and Nicola Boniface (GBR) held a seven-point lead heading into the Medal Race so the advantage was theirs. The British team had a tough start and found themselves sandwiched in the pack. Meanwhile the Spaniards, New Zealand’s Gemma Jones and Jason Saunders and Argentina’s Santiago Lange and Cecilia Carranza Saroli pushed ahead. Jones and Saunders led at the mid-point but the Spaniards attacked and grabbed the lead. The Argentinians then went on the attack and picked off the Spaniards on the final downwind.
Lange and Saroli claimed the race win which propelled them into the bronze medal position. The Spaniards finished second and when Saxton and Boniface followed in sixth, gold was officially theirs by a single point. “For us it was important to get a medal today,” said Martinez. “We only noticed where the British were on the second upwind. We hadn’t noticed them as we were too busy so we fought hard to pass the ones in front. “We’ve been working very hard. We have a new boat and we struggled in Palma. We were not fast enough and we weren’t good enough. This week was a very light week so we know that we can perform in the light but that doesn’t mean we will perform in the medium or strong winds. “We’re still far away from other guys we’ve beaten this week, Ben for example. The Italians and New Zealand were also very strong this week. We’re a long way away from them.”
