by Sally Underwood THE family of a man who died following a gas leak at a Spanish hotel has received €320,000 compensation. The 62-year-old victim from La Cala del Moral had been on a group holiday in Cantabria with a pensioners’ association in 2017 when 21 people were affected by carbon monoxide poisoning at a hotel. Jose Manuel was on an annual tour with the group, visiting Madrid, Bilbao, San Sebastian, Guernica, and Bermeo. On the fourth day of the trip, the group toured Santander before spending the night at the Campomar de Isla
hotel in Cantabria. The victim and his wife went to sleep in their hotel room unaware carbon monoxide caused by a faulty boiler was entering their bathroom. The couple’s room was the most affected by the leak. At breakfast the next morning, other members of the group raised the alarm after noticing the couple were missing. Jose Manuel was later found in his room in car-
diorespiratory arrest. Health workers were able to resuscitate him before he was transferred to the Valdecilla Hospital. Doctors said nothing more could be done to save Jose Manuel, however, and life support was withdrawn. The majority of the total 92 people affected by the carbon monoxide poisoning, including Jose Manuel’s travelling companions, suffered less se-
rious health consequences, although several were treated in Intensive Care. A law firm representing seven people from Malaga affected in the incident, as well as the relatives of Jose Manuel, has announced the hotel’s insurer has agreed to compensate the victims. In addition to the €320,000 received by Jose Manuel’s family, other victims received €100,000.

Stabbing trial PROSECUTORS have asked for seven-and-a-half years in prison for a man accused of a stabbing in Almuñecar. The alleged incident on August 28, 2016, is said to have taken place following an altercation near a bar in the town’s Paseo del Altillo. Two men, Ramon CG and Ramon FF, are said to have approached the victim as he stood with two male and two female friends. The suspects are said to have begun arguing with the two women before the victim tried to calm the situation down. Ramon FF is then accused of punching the alleged victim, claiming he would not hurt the girls but would instead harm the man. The man then reportedly left the area with his two male friends before being followed by the two suspects. After catching him up, Ramon CG allegedly pulled out a large knife before stabbing the alleged victim twice in the stomach. The Public Prosecutor said the accused carried out the stabbing “with the intention of taking his life.” The victim was later taken to hospital and medics were able to save his life. Ramon CG is on trial for attempted murder and faces seven-and-a-half years in prison, as well as an order not to come within 300 metres of the alleged victim for 15 years following his release. Julen’s parents pursue case THE parents of two-year-old Julen have told a court investigating his death they want the negligent manslaughter case to continue. Following the release of Julen’s postmortem report last week, parents Jose Rosello and Victoria Garcia were asked by a Malaga judge whether they wanted to pursue an investigation into the owner of
the land where the boy died. The couple said they wanted to continue with the case, while the Office of the Prosecutor also supported a continued investigation into David Serrano, whose rural plot the 71-metre Julen fell down was located on. Last week’s post-mortem showed Julen had died as a result of and shortly after falling down the borehole.

Serrano’s lawyers had previously claimed the child could instead have been killed by equipment used in rescue efforts to reach him and had requested further tests to take place. The defendant’s lawyers also claimed Serrano should not be under investigation, instead blaming the man who dug the borehole, claiming he lied about covering the opening.
FOLLOWING labour disputes among cleaners in Torrox, it has emerged the council has still not decided whether to grant the town’s cleaning company a new contract. According to Torrox’s mayor, Oscar Medina, services will continue to run, “normally,” while the council determines the future of Livitemsa. After providing services in Torrox for the past 16 years, Livitemsa’s contract expires in May, leaving councillors deciding its fate. According to Spanish media, municipal technicians are currently working on reports to determine whether Livitemsa should be brought under council control or extend its contract by nine years. Last November, around 60 members of Torrox’s cleaning services protested working conditions. Backed by labour unions CC OO and UGT, the cleaners threatened to go on strike if their demands over pay and time off were not met. Following months of negotiations, Torrox Council agreed to commit a further 22.4 per cent to cleaning costs. The workers will also be back paid a salary increase of 6 per cent for 2018, and receive a further increase of 2.5 per cent in 2019.

MALAGA’S metro service received a record amount of travellers for the Easter period, with almost 175,000 people using the service. The figure represents a 15.2 per cent increase on the same period in 2018, and is the h i g h e st n u m b e r o v er Easter since it opened in 2014.
Mobile ‘fraud’ A MAN accused of fraudulently selling mobile phones over the internet told a Malaga court he has returned the money he is able to. The suspect is claimed to have conned 250 customers who paid for mobile phones but never received them. The man instead blames the distributor and said he was only a ‘mediator.’

The blaze, which reportedly broke out on the second floor of a flat on Rambla de Capuchinos, is said to h a v e c r e a t e d a larg e amount of smoke which drifted over the procession. The fire was later extinguished with no injuries reported.
Green area VELEZ-MALAGA Council has signed a €9.3 million contract to main t a i n t h e a r e a ’s g ree n spaces for the next four years. The co u n c i l sa i d t h e mo v e would p u t a n e n d t o rec e n t complaints over the condition of the municipality’s parks and gardens. The contract, costing €2,498,000, will cover 168,172 square metres of green areas.
Drug arrests POLICE have arrested five people in El Palo, Malaga, after allegedly finding five grams of hashish and 94 grams of heroin. Officers from the National Police also claim to have seized €1,569 in cash, a dagger, precision scales, a bicycle, a moped, and 16 mobile phones.

Rich with history THIS picture of a fairytale-like castle comes from Castilla y Leon which celebrated its annual regional holiday yesterday (Wednesday). The Alcazar de Segovia (Sergovia Fortress in English) lies in the province of the same name in Castilla y Leon. Castilla y Leon became one of Spain’s 17 autonomous communities in 1983. It is made up of the historical Kingdoms of Leon and part of Castilla which both existed before Spain was unified after the Reconquista in the Medieval era.
The region is made up of nine provinces, home to almost 2,337,520 people, according to census data. It covers an area of 94,223 squarekilometres, making it the largest region in Spain and the third biggest in Europe. Castila y Leon has no official capital, but most of its administrative agencies are based in Valladolid City. The region started to form when the Kingdom of Asturias, a Christian stronghold in an otherwise Muslim Spain, began pushing south. They reached the area which is
now Leon and formed a Kingdom there in 910. The Kingdom of Castilla was created in 1065 and the two merged in 1230 as Christian forces continued to move further into Moorish territory. The region has witnessed some of Spain’s key historical events including the summoning of the Cortes of Leon, Europe’s first parliamentary body, in 1188 by King Alfonso IX. The Medieval Spanish knight Rodrigo Diaz de Vivar (otherwise known as El Cid) was from Vivar in Burgos Province.

The Axarquia-Eastern Costa del Sol Commonwealth of Municipalities began the campaign at the IES Salvador Rueda de Velez-Malaga school, where students will be taught about the importance of healthy food. The project will also emphasise the importance of eating locally-produced products,

while students will be taught about the nutritional differences between artisanal and industrially-made foods. Among the foods discussed will be popular local ones, including subtropical fruits, raisins, and extra virgin olive oil. Among other activities, students will also visit the San Isidro de Periana and Nuestra Señora del Rosario agricultural cooperatives, which both produce locally-made artisanal food products.

The fire, which broke out on a palm and subtropical fruit farm, is said to have also reached a cane field in the La Campana area near the Rio Seco. According to municipal firefighters, it took professionals almost five hours to control the flames. Experts

New currency A VELEZ-MALAGA native has become the head of the first Spanish cryptocurrency company. Carlos Martin, head of Crypto Birds, announced his company will launch the new currency aimed at both investors and businesses seeking financing. The engineer told one publication the launch has been the result of two years ‘intense work,’ and the company had ‘more lawyers than developers,’ in order to comply with Spain’s laws. Martin said cryptocurrency companies
previously claiming to be trading from Spain had ‘in fact done it from Switzerland or Gibraltar, for example,’ due to Spain’s complex laws. Crypto Birds means the form of currency will be launched legally for the first time ever. The business will rely on users to research and rank potential investments before being rewarded in the form of tokens which can be used for financing. Mobile phone theft POLICE have arrested two men accused of mugging seven victims of their mobile phones in Malaga City. The suspects, aged 29 and 41, are claimed to have used intimidation or the threat of knives to rob their victims, before fleeing by moped. Officers from the National Police allegedly identified one of the men after one person’s friend took a screenshot of the suspect’s face after he stole the phone as his victim made a video call. The photo reportedly showed the exact moment the victim was approached from behind by the man, and was said to be instrumental in identifying the suspect for this alleged crime and six others. Police claim the accused are responsible for seven robberies between April 3 and 13, mainly concentrated in the Avenida de Europa and Churriana areas.
Easter incidents ACCORDING to Andalucia’s emergency services, a total of 3,492 incidents were reported in Malaga Province during Holy Week. The figures, recorded between April 12 and April 22, representing an 11 per cent increase on the previous year. The majority of incidents related to health problems, with 1,647 calls reported, while security issues represented 805 reports. The number of reports of traffic incidents was 286, while traffic accidents was 203, while 126 reports of fire were received. The busiest hours for emergency calls were between 7pm and 10pm, when an average of 109 reports were made every hour. By province, Malaga recorded the second largest number of incidents during the period, representing 20.19 percent of emergencies attended in Andalucia.

€14,250 signs by Sally Underwood ALMUÑECAR Council has announced it is set to make more than €14,000 a year after replacing all tourist signs with new ones containing adverts. Trinidad Herrera, the town’s mayor, said the move had cost the council nothing but would instead make money after the signs were replaced by company Public Activity Levante SL. The new signs have been installed in various tourist areas throughout Almuñecar and La Herradura, including Cantarrijan beach and Cabria beach. Mayor Herrera said: “All the signage on streets, monuments, cu ltu ra l a s s e ts , b e a c he s a nd tourist resources has been redesigned.” In addition to replacing the 68 current signs, a further 30 new information posts in both Spanish and English have also been installed. Tourist village remains closed AN iconic tourist complex in Periana has now remained closed for 16 years, despite growth in the tourism sector. The f ut ur e of t he com pl ex i n Cor t i j o Blanco, located three kilometres from Periana, is now under discussion within the Junta de Andalucia, and several Chinese investors are said to be interested in taking over the site. Around €7 million is thought to have been invested in the complex up to 2007, despite its closure in 2003. The site has capacity for 200 guests, and is located in the heart of Axarquia. Periana’s mayor, Rafael Torrubia, told Spanish media: “For us it is a real shame, it is a totally unacceptable situation, because there is no week in which we do not receive a call at the town hall asking about the tourist village, and we have to tell you that it has been closed since 2003.”

Spain returns sculptures THREE Roman sculptures have been returned to Italy after they were sold on the Spanish black market. National Police officers seized the artefacts after one was sold in Madrid and
two were sold in Barcelona. Domingo Suarez, an envoy at Spain’s embassy in Rome, said the operation showed authorities were working to protect cultural heritage.
Royal couple’s pilgrimage THE King and Queen of Belgium, Felipe and Matilde, again walked the Santiago Way over Easter. They first followed the Camino in 2017 along the Navarra route to Santiago de Compostela accompanied by their four children. In 2018 they travelled via Alava and Logroño while this year the royal
couple took the 28-kilometre French route from Burgos and Palencia. Discreetly dressed in comfortable clothes and sensible footwear, the royal couple and their bodyguards were practically anonymous amongst other the pilgrims making for Santiago. Although Belgium is a

Korean embassy arrest A FORMER US marine has reportedly been arrested in Los Angeles (USA) in connection with a raid on North Korea’s embassy in Madrid. Christopher Ahn has been named as the man arrested, according to an anonymous source quoted by AP news agency and the Washington Post. Ahn is thought to be a member of the North Korean dissident group Cheollima Civil Defense (CCD), which claimed responsibility for the assault. According to the newspaper, Ahn is scheduled to appear before a Los Angeles court on Friday. It is also reported that federal agents carried out a search of the home of Adrian Hong, leader of the CCD. L e e Wo l o s k y, H o n g ’s l a w y e r, s a i d h e w a s ‘ d i s -
mayed’ by the fact the authorities ‘have decided to execute court orders against US citizens deriving from criminal lawsuits filed by the North Korean regime.’ The assault happened on February 22, when a group of about 10 hooded people apparently jumped a wall at the Madrid embassy. The assailants allegedly handcuffed and beat the employees of the Legation and a group of North Korean architecture students who were there at the time; something which CCD denies. The assailants took several computers and documents from the building. Yun Sok So told the police the robbers were from South Korea, that their hands had been tied and their heads covered with plastic bags and beaten.
Beach smoking ban THE General Directorate of Public Health has proposed a new scheme to ban smoking from several beaches in the Balearic Islands. All coastal town halls belonging to the island have been requested to voluntarily introduce smoke-free beaches in a bid to reduce the consumption of cigarettes and promote healthy habits. The only beach that has a smoking ban in the Balearics is Santa Eularia. According to Spanish press, a meeting was set to take place after the Easter holidays in which the town halls will be presented with materials such as flyers, brochures and badges to try and launch the initiative.
Alzheimer’s research plan SPAIN’S Council of Ministers has approached the country’s first plan to research and understand the causes of Alzheimer’s. The plan, approved at a meeting of ministers last week, seeks to curb the rejection, exclusion and stigmatisation of people living with the illness. Around 700,000 people live with the disease in Spain, according to government estimates. Health Minister Maria Luisa Carcedo said an estimated two million people would have the illness by 2050. Alzheimer ’s is expected to rise due to people living longer on average, with the onset of the illness typically coming in old age. The plan aims to improve responses to Alzheimer’s in Spain’s health system by studying what will be required to adequately treat those with the condition. It also seeks to improve the situation for family carers.
Sing it in Spanish TWO years after Luis Fonsi’s Despacito, Spanishlanguage hits have cemented their place in mainstream music. They have moved beyond one-off smashes and infiltrated charts worldwide, headlining festivals instead of appearing as guests or relegated to lesser stages. There were an unprecedented number of Latin hits at this year’s Coachella festival in California, an unmistakeable sign of their growing influence in the US where Spanish is the mothertongue of 41 million people. “It took 15 years for reggaeton to get to Coachella. We are here!” shouted Colombian J Balvin as he took to the main stage. The 33-year-old boundary-pusher will also headline Chicago’s Lollapalooza festival, becoming the first Spanish- language acts to sing one of the coveted spots.

ETA appeal denied AN appeal by former ETA terrorist Kepa Pikabea Ugalde has been thrown out by the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR). He was asking that the 10 years he spent in a French prison be deducted from the 30-year term imposed on him in Spain for three counts of murder. The ECHR decided the time served in France should not be taken into account as the sentence was imposed for belonging to a terrorist group. This was a different offence for which he was jailed in Spain; specifically the three murders. The Strasbourg court recognised that in Spain the maximum term possible is 30 years and decided that this should not be reduced on the basis of time served for a separate offence in another EU country. Pikabea, 63, was arrested in France in 1994 and is now serving his Spanish sentence at Martutene Prison in San Sebastian. On March 29, he

Unity trolling SPANISH Twitter users have offered parody suggestions to a former government minister after he asked which national symbol united Spain following the Notre Dame cathedral fire in Paris. Jordi Sevilla, the Minister for Public Administration under Jose Luis Rodriquez Zapatero, asked social media users: ‘Do we in Spain have a national symbol which unites us all like the Notre Dame for the French and Europeans?’ Martin Pettersson replied ironically: ‘Currently a hatred of Catalans which provides electoral capital.’ Antonio Baños said IBEX 35, in reference to the index of Spain’s most valuable publicly listed companies. Last year’s Gurtel corruption scandal, cocaine, the Valley of the Fallen mausoleum and the national debt were also posted as answers.

Cathedral funding cut FUNDING to restore and repair cathedrals in Spain has fallen by more than 90 per cent in the last 10 years, according to the country’s heritage agency. The deputy director of the Institute of Spanish Heritage of Culture (IPCE) said funding had fallen from €18.3 million to €1.6 million. “Cathedrals require constant attention. We have to go back to €18 million in funding for stable maintenance,” Rivera said. The deputy director added funding was ‘very little,’ and that funding had fallen drastically in recent
years. “National plans have no budget. It is a mistake which should be corrected urgently,” Rivera said. The IPCE repairs about 40 cathedrals a year on average. The agency has maintained the holy buildings since 1990 when it struck an agreement with the Catholic Church to oversee renovations and repairs. A PLANNED terror attack on Sevilla was prevented after a suspected jihadist was arrested in Morocco, say Spanish police. According to Spanish newspaper El Confidencial, it is thought by police that the suspect, who has a flat in Sevilla, was planning to attack Easter celebrations in the Andalucian city. The Spanish Interior Ministry had previously decided to increase security for Easter parades around Spain as well as for the upcoming general election on April 28. Both the police and the Interior Ministry refused to comment on the report. The Easter celebrations and parades in Sevilla are some of the biggest and most important in Spain, attracting huge crowds packed shoulder to shoulder in the narrow streets of the historic centre.

Narrow escape AN Easter tradition in a Spanish village nearly ended in disaster when a tree trunk crashed to the ground, narrowly missing spectators. In the festival - the origins of which are unknown - a 40metre tall tree trunk is taken to the main square in Cornella del Terri, Cataluña, before being allowed to crash to the ground and shatter into pieces
on the hard cobbles. Crowds gather to witness the event, but this time high winds nearly caused a tragedy as the trunk started to topple towards the specatators rather than fall into the empty square. People scattered amongst screams to avoid the trunk, which at the last second was pushed away from the spectators by two men who had been
holding it upright. The trunk smashed onto the cobbles narrowly missing residents including a young boy who had run across the square to avoid the tree’s original path. The town’s mayor has pledged to keep crowds further back in future years, saying such a dangerous situation should never have arisen.

Holiday push SPAIN’S regions have launched advertising campaigns in Britain to draw in tourists from the country and combat the expected fallout from Brexit. Cataluña is the latest region to launch a campaign aimed at British travellers. Its Legends of Cataluña publicity drive, backed by €1 million in regional funding, is set to begin in London and Manchester on Sunday May 26. It comes as provinces including Malaga and Cadiz set out their stalls at the World Travel Market in London earlier this year. The former is looking to hold as many British tourists as possible on the Costa del Sol. Spain’s national tourist board has also launched a series of events designed to address the concerns of companies in the sector as Brexit approaches. It comes as the Spanish Confederation of Hotels and Tourist Accommodation (CEHAT) predicted Spain could have lost up to three million tourists, had Brexit gone ahead on Friday April 12. Concerns have eased since Britain and the EU27 agreed to delay Brexit until Thursday October 31. Industry data from the Costa Blanca showed bookings from British travellers increased by 12 per cent this April compared to last year.
Election looms By Joe Gerrard BREXIT has been delayed until October, but there was little respite for British political parties this week as it looked increasingly likely they will be contesting May’s European Parliament election. British Prime Minister Theresa May has repeatedly said she wants Brexit to take place before Britain has to hold the vote. But the legal groundwork has been laid after Parliament was obliged to pass a ‘day of poll order’ mechanism earlier this month in light of ongoing uncertainty over Britain’s withdrawal. The country’s Electoral Commission, which would oversee the vote if it does take place, said having to manage a ballot which may not happen was ‘unprecedented.’ A Brexit deal would have to be passed before Thursday May 23 if the vote is to be avoided. The ruling Conservatives have the most to lose from the vote. Early signs are that the support for the Tories could collapse as pro-Brexit sup-

Driving licences in Spain LIVING in Spain can bring with it an array of issues which may not have been encountered when living in the UK. There are lots of things to consider, and we are here to help try to make the transition and life in Spain a little easier by compiling a series of helpful facts and figures relating to a variety of topics. If you are planning on living in Spain on a permanent basis, it’s a good idea to have a Spanish driving licence - in fact it is mandatory after a while. Here are some guidelines for current and new drivers on how to do this quickly and easily. If you already have a valid EU (European Union) Community or an EEA (European Economic Area) driving licence and meet the minimum driving age in Spain, you can use it for the first two years of residence in Spain, although you must register your details with the traffic authorities after six months.

Brit civil war volunteers heard By Joe Gerrard RECORDINGS of two British volunteers who travelled to Spain to fight fascism during the country’s civil war are set to be heard in public for the first time. The interviews with John Dunlop and George Drever, from Glasgow and Leith respectively, are being played as part of a University of Edinburgh’s exhibition on its Hispanic Studies offering. The recordings were made in the 1980’s and featuring both men talking about the reasons why they travelled to fight in the conflict and about their experiences. Dunlop said he had joined the Communist Par-
ty after taking an interest in politics and began reading about the Spanish Civil War. “It seemed to me that in Spain, great injustice was being perpetrated on the people of Spain. “I was also disgusted by the fact other democratic governments in Europe were not doing anything to help the legal government of Spain,” Dunlop said. Drever can be heard talking about being in Valladolid City where he carried a casualty to hospital in what he said was a ‘very strange’ experience. “Some of the Spaniards of course said: ‘You’re an extanjero (foreigner), si? And I remember the nuns saying: ‘pobre chico’ Poor boy,” Drever said.

Once the process is under way, you will have to adhere to the same conditions as Spanish licence holders: Have reached minimum age in Spain for the specific category of vehicle you want to drive, Relevant medical checks, Renew or exchange the licence after the first two years’ residence in Spain. If an EU licence is renewed in Spain it effectively converts it into a Spanish EU licence, which then needs to be renewed every 10 years up to the age of 65, and every five years after 65. The new regulation which requires new residents to exchange their licences for a Spanish one, was enforced three years ago. As such, Spain has agreements with more than 20 countries, allowing drivers to exchange a foreign driver’s licence for its equivalent. To exchange your licence, you will need to fill out an application form that is issued by the Provincial Traffic Headquarters. (See the above website). The following documents will be required: Proof of identity (original passport and a copy), Proof of your residence for six months (Certificate of Registration in the Central Aliens Register - the NIE number), Application form (in Spanish), Current valid driving licence to be exchanged (original and a copy), Written declaration stating that you don’t have another driving licence of the same class in another country, Written declaration stating that you have not been suspended or banned, Two recent passport size photographs (32 by 25 mm), Medical fitness report (visit the DGT website for information). For new drivers, check the legal driving ages and permit types before you register. You can get details depending on what type of vehicle you want to drive by visiting: English-driving-school.com. The best option (for new drivers) is to go to a driving school as they take care of the registration process with the Jefatura (Jefatura Provincial de Trafico) on your behalf. Criminal thoughts THE average career criminal in Spain takes care to observe and prepare before striking, avoiding using violence, according to a study by the company Techco Security. In 2018 there were 152,602 thefts compared to 33,821 violent robberies. For the most part thieves want to make sure there is no one on the premises before they break in to shops and homes.
Most break-ins happen between midnight and 4am, with half of this sort of crime committed at weekends when businesses are closed and families away. However, when it comes to violent crime, offences are most likely to occur in daylight hours when alarms are switched off and less planning is required, with speed being the most desired characteristic.
Showing the flag THE Spanish frigate Mendez Nuñez recently visited Mallorca after joining the USS Abraham Lincoln Carrier Strike Group earlier this month. The Lincoln is the first US aircraft carrier to enter European waters since the Harry S Truman carried out a double deployment last year in the US Navy’s recently-revived concept of operating in an unpredictable pattern. “Our mission is to provide
the Lincoln with defence capacity, carry out different maritime security assignments and guarantee the freedom of shipping and commerce,” said the Mendez Nuñez’s captain Antonio Gonzalez del Tanago. Before joining the strike group, the Mendez Nuñez had to undergo an intense assessment and certification process, taking part in several integration exercises with the Carrier Strike Group on the
East Coast in January and February. The frigate will accompany the Abraham Lincoln for seven months in the Mediterranean, Persian Gulf, Indian Ocean, South China Sea and the Pacific before returning to the US naval base in San Diego (California). The Strike Group is making a deliberate show of force in regions where the Russian navy has grown more active, the US Navy admitted.

THE family of a 27-year-old Costa Rican woman who died in Barcelona are appealing for financial help to bring her body home. Stephany Gradys, a special educator who had lived in Spain for three years, reportedly died suddenly on Saturday of asphyxiation after eating. While Spanish authorities continue to investigate what caused the girl’s death, her family is trying to raise the €9,000 needed to return her body to Costa Rica. They are also hoping to raise funds to cover the plane tickets of her mother and two sisters who would like to fly to Barcelona to accompany Stephany home.
Haemophilia numbers AROUND 3,000 people in Spain suffer from haemophilia or another blood clotting disease, according to new figures. The disease was highlighted across Spain in a series of events to commemorate World Haemophilia Day. The Spanish Federation of Haemophilia (Fedhemo) took the opportunity to push for improvements in treatment in Spain. Fedhemo’s president, Danial Anibal Garcia Diego, said: “The problem is the difficulty in accessing these types of therapy is more noticeable in the national market due to its cost and the obvious inequality of access between the different autonomous communities.” Pablo Estival Monteliu, a patient with type B haemophilia, said: “Spain is going to the back of the queue regarding other European countries in access to these new treatments.” F e d h e m o ’s g e n e r a l s e c r e t a r y, M i g u e l A n g e l M a r t i n Dominguez, added: “[These treatments] are approved but not reimbursable and that is why autonomous communities have not generally taken them on.”

Spain’s water reserves at lowest levels DESPITE the threat of heavy rain spoiling many Easter week processions in Spain last week, newly-released data shows that the country’s national water reserves are at just 57 per cent of capacity. The figures show the spring level of 32,388 hm3 of water in the reservoirs have not been so low since 2008.

Permission to sail By Joe Gerrard SPANISH maritime authorities have granted the Open Arms rescue boat permission to leave harbour and take supplies to refugees in the Eastern Mediterranean after 100 days spent in Barcelona. Officials have given the boat permission to sail to the Greek islands of Lesbos and Samos to deliver humanitarian aid to refugees in camps there. It comes after authorities prevented it from leaving, accusing the Proactiva Open Arms NGO which runs the boat of failing to comply with international agreements and docking rules.

Proactiva Open Arms founder Oscar Camps said volunteers had been denied the chance to do something to help migrants and refugees stranded in the Mediterranean while it remained docked. Camps previously called on Spanish prime minister Pedro Sanchez to stop blocking the boat and to live up to his rhetoric about migration being a common challenge for Europe. The boat was due to leave the port on Friday. The Open Arms has been active in rescuing migrants stranded in the Mediterranean for about four years and is estimated to have saved hundreds of lives.
In comparison, for the same period last year, the reserve was 68 per cent of the total capacity. Data shows that the northern regions of the peninsula have enjoyed plentiful rainfall through the winter and levels are now between 60 - 90 per cent. But the worst figures are
from reservoirs in the south of the country with Jucar and Segura at just 37.6 per cent and 30.3 per cent respectively. The hydrological year, which began on October 1, has seen 14 per cent less rainfall than usual according to data from state national Met Office AEMET.
A MAN was arrested after smashing his car into A & E at Basurto hospital in Bilbao. He had gone to the hospital’s Urgencias department with an elderly family member who was taken ill in the early hours of the morning. When told there was a wait, he returned to his car, rammed the hospital doors and drove inside the building, coming to a stop just before the reception desk. Neither the hospital staff nor the two people inside his white Seat Cordoba were injured although he then allegedly got out of the car and attacked an ambulance driver. When Bilbao’s Municipal Police arrived to arrest him, he refused to take a breath test. He now faces charges of dangerous driving and damaging public property.

THE WEEK IN POLITICS By Joe Gerrard SPANISH politicians and voters are not the only ones hoping that this Sunday’s election will end 10 months of political deadlock. Sources close to top EU officials have reportedly said they are hoping that a stable government with a clear parliamentary majority will take charge after the ballot. ‘Spanish politics cannot continue to stumble along,’ the sources were quoted in Spanish media as saying. The comments come in reference to the failure of the ruling left leaning Partido Socialista (PSOE) to pass its draft budget for this year. This was the factor which led Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez to call the snap election in March. They also follow years of political uncertainty which began in 2015. An election in December last year saw thenruling conservative Partido Popular’s (PP) absolute majority wiped out, with the party going from 187 seats to

UNCERTAIN: Deadlock has plagued Spanish politics since 2015. 123. The election was also novel because it saw the entry of the centrist Ciudadanos and the leftist Podemos into the Congress of Deputies lower house for the first time. Both took seats from the PP and PSOE, upending what had largely been a two-party system up to that time. Efforts began to cobble together coalitions on both the
left and the right. But neither side could muster the necessary support to command a majority in the Congress of Deputies, leading to another election the following year. Little change came from the 2016 vote which saw the PP claw back a handful of seats to reach a total of 137 deputies, still far short of a majority. The PP had called
for stability at the time in the face of what they branded as a rise of radicalism and populism. The two elections took place against a backdrop of economic instability unleashed by the last recession and corruption scandals which benefitted the insurgent Ciudadanos and Podemos. The 2016 election also took place in the wake of the Brexit referendum, closely watched in Spain and elsewhere in Europe. Now in 2019, the spectre of uncertainty continues to haunt Spanish politics. A new party, far-right Vox, looks set to enter Congress after exploiting anti-migrant feelings which will complicate efforts to build coalitions and a parliamentary majority further. The jury is still out on whether stability will return to Spanish politics.
Election day VOTERS in Spain go to the polls this Sunday to cast their ballots for the snap general election. The election was called at the start of March after the ruling left-leaning Partido Socialista (PSOE) effectively had its budget plans vetoed by pro-Catalan independence parties. That left Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez no choice but to go to the polls. Campaigning is now reaching its pre-election climax, with party leaders having criss-crossed the country to try and win over undecided voters. That will come to an end at midnight on Friday, after which Spanish law prohibits campaigning until voters go to the polls. Polling stations open at 9am and close at 8pm. After they close their doors the provisional counting of results will begin. The general counting of votes begins on Wednesday after ballot papers arrive from abroad. The deadline for the count to finish is Saturday May 4. There is likely to be some indication of who will win the election after the provisional votes are counted, but the official results will be declared no later than Monday May 13. The new members of the Congreso are then set to meet on Tuesday May 21. With the results looking close, it is unclear how long it will take for parties to reach coalition deals. Anteco Systems, which trades under the name AnyTech365, is among the companies which have made it onto the Financial Times most recent ‘Europe’s Fastest Growing Companies’ table. The table, which ranks companies based on annual turnover from 2014 to 2017, showed the Marbella and Torremolinos-based firm had an absolute revenue growth of more than 2.5 per cent. Bubble fears rule plan OFFICIALS with Spain’s Ecology Ministry have drawn up plans to tighten regulations on the renewable energy market amidst fears excessive demand could fuel a speculative bubble. Figures from Red Electrica de España (REE), which is in charge of managing and granting renewable energy access permits, shows current applications amount to more than 144,400 megawatts of power. Ministry forecasts under its Energy and Climate plan predicted the amount would be 67,500 megawatts. Concerns over a potential bubble previously led the Ministry to increase the guar-

It was hoped this would stave off those who planned to buy the permits to sell on at a profit. REE figures show power generated under the permit system totalled 28,400 megawatts, with permission granted for a further 45,900 and requests for 70,500. Fears about speculation are new to the energy market. Previous permit rules coal and nuclear power plants and other installations contained no measures preventing speculation because it was thought no
company would sell such assets on at a profit. But the arrival of renewable energy sources such as solar panels and wind turbines has reduced investment costs, lowering market barriers to entry and opening it to speculation. Officials fear if that happens, permits could become sought after solely for investment reasons, distorting the market and creating the conditions for a later crash. Spain’s National Commission of Markets and Competition (CNMC) watchdog would have to approve any regulation changes put forward to make sure they do not harm competition.
SPAIN’S Tax Agency has warned about politicians increasingly using corporate entities to reduce payment burdens as four government ministers were previously found to be doing so. The agency said the use of sociedades patrimoniales (patrimonial societies in English) allowed some to play the tax system by billing and buying through them. It comes after Pedro Duque, Isabel Celaa, Nadia Calviño and Maxim Huerta were found to be using sociedades patrimoniales. Huerta resigned as Culture Minister less than a week after taking office over his tax arrangements.

Bank merger costs higher RESTRUCTURING costs incurred by the merger between Spain’s Unicaja and Liberbank are estimated at €317 million, three times more than previously thought according to industry analysis. Credit Suisse’s report on the merger showed the cost of the merger itself would be €101 million, 10 per cent of the combined cost of both banks. Credit Suisse has also cut its estimates of expected
profits of the unified banks by between 15 and 17 per cent due to Spain’s overall economic outlook going forward. The merged Unicaja and Liberbank entity is estimated make €175 million in profit in 2019. The new entity is expected to net more than €1 billion. The new bank is set to become the sixth largest in Spain with assets of €92 billion.

Christianophobia?
LEAPY LEE SAYS IT OTHERS THINK IT I TOO, was shocked and saddened by the terrible devastation of Notre Dame in Paris last week. At the time of writing, no group has claimed responsibility and no blame yet been apportioned. ‘Appears to be accidental’ is a phrase being bandied about. This reaction being the usual, ‘petrified to offend anyone’ attitude which complacent European Christians seem to adopt for almost any atrocity which isn’t actually followed by a ‘we are responsible,’ sign, emblazoned in sky writing above their heads! However, before I am once again accused of some kind of phobia or another, let me run a few facts by you. In 2016, three females, with radical ties to Islam, were arrested in a street adjacent to Notre Dame; along with a lorry containing six gas cylinders and Arabic propaganda papers. In the violence which ensued, two police officers were injured with one being stabbed in the chest. After the incident police declared they were ‘in a race against time’ before a major terrorist attack took place. Also in that year, a Catholic priest was murdered by ‘two soldiers’ of a group calling themselves Islamic State (ISLE). Last year, in France there were 873 reported attacks on Christian churches and 1,063 anti-Christian acts. Bearing all these facts in mind, quite frankly, if this Notre Dame disaster is put down to coincidence, then I

Just to drive my point home, as I write, reports are coming in from Sri Lanka of seven explosions, targeting six churches and hotels, which have killed nearly 300 people and injured hun-
dreds more. And all of these recent atrocities are occurring during one of the most sacred Christian periods of the year. Here are a few more facts for the disbelieving snowflakes and ‘infidels.’ Over the last few
years, all across Europe, there have been thousands of attacks on Christian artefacts and holy shrines. This year, in March alone, four churches in Germany were vandalised or torched. And still the silence from the authorities is deafening! Don’t take my word for this cowardly inaction. Cast an eye over a report last week on PI - News, a German news site. I quote: ‘Hardly anyone writes about the increasing attacks on Christian symbols. There is an eloquent silence in both France and Germany about the scandal of the desecrations and the origin of the perpetrators. Not a word or even the slightest hint which could in any way lead to the suspicion of immigrants. It is not the perpetrators who are in danger of being ostracised, but those who dare to associate the desecration of Christian symbols with immigrant imports. They are instead, accused of hatred, hate speech and racism.’ Unquote. Well, be that as it may, I am utterly convinced that unless the authorities get some bottle and at least publically recognise the problems of increasing ‘Christianophobia,’ some form of rightwing ‘tit for tat’ will begin to occur. TECH FOR THE TIMID FAREWELL little white Dash button, we hardly knew you. Well, barely, in its brief five years of life (though only two in late-adopter Spain). Certainly not at all in Germany where the courts ruled this January that it was a nein-nein. Killed off worldwide by Amazon recently, at its peak the retailer’s €5 Dash button came in several hundred ‘flavours.’ Initially thought to be an April Fool’s joke, the tiny electronic gadgets could be stuck on the wall, the fridge, the cupboard, and indeed in the toilet - a one-button method of reordering common household products. Just jab the Dash button dedicated to Tide washing powder, say, and its embedded wireless circuit would instantly send out your replenishment order to the Amazon warehouse. Hey presto, a day or two later and you could be kneedeep in detergent - as indeed one hapless family was when their toddler discovered the button.

HOPES DASHED: No more auto-ordering buttons. But over in Germany a court ruled that the buttons didn’t provide sufficient information about the product being ordered or its price. Shoppers have to know what they’re paying. Given technology’s inevitable Law of Unintended Consequences, hackers naturally descended on the little devices to make them seriously unfit for their original purpose. Hacked Dash buttons cropped up
to summon an Uber taxi, to order pizzas or beer, to track baby habits or working hours, to control home lighting, to fire up Netflix, to brew coffee or open the garage door, even to send a pre-worded text or most scarily of all, to transfer money from your checking to your savings account. All with a €5 gadget and a twitch of reprogramming. But now, says Amazon, we have moved on. Worryingly for some of
us, it says hundreds of ‘Internet of Things’ devices are now actually capable of ordering stuff themselves. Oh great; soon our gadgets can just rack up our grocery bills all by themselves while we get on with the important business of consuming all the stuff they’re ordering. It’s the ultimate capitalist wet dream; consumption which entirely removes the consumer’s decisionmaking process from the transactional loop. And the company certainly isn’t giving up on ideas for parting us from our cash. Alongside their hope you will use an Alexa assistant to voice-order stuff, Amazon’s ‘Subscribe & Save’ program lets you ‘automatically receive your favourite items every month.’ Goodbye regular shopping lists. Should we weep over the demise of the Dash? Not at all; offer it a brief word of thanks for creating more smart-home gear, come the day you reorder bread through your toaster.
‘Alexa don’t buy…’ SURPRISE surprise; despite 70 million Alexa-powered digital assistants sold so far, almost no-one uses them to actually order stuff. That’s not what Amazon hoped. Barely 2 per cent of ‘Echo’ owners use them for buying things. Of those who do, 90 per cent don’t repeat the experience. Ouch. That sheds doubt on predictions that the smart speaker shopping market will soon be worth far more than today. One problem is how to stop your kids, or indeed even an attentive parrot, from ordering stuff simply by saying ‘Alexa, buy some ……’ I should know. Teaching a nervous friend how to use his new assistant, I talked him repeatedly through the steps of ordering toilet paper. Alexa overheard; and he now has a year’s supply.

IT’S no secret that institutions develop their own language in the interests of time and confidentiality. Restaurant staff use various terms to describe their customers, sometimes derogatory, occasionally complimentary. So, when next in your favourite restaurant, consider how you’re maybe being described. While lots of regular customers are referred to by what they regularly order or their idiosyncrasies (for example, ‘extra garlic,’ ‘doggie-bag lady,’ ‘lousy tipper’), ‘PIA’ is code for ‘Pain In the A*** ,’ ‘HAF’ means ‘Had A Few,’ and ‘FF’ in the reservation book against your name means you’re ‘F***ing Fussy.’ Oops! Doctors too have their codes. While a ‘GLM’ is a ‘Good-Looking Mum,’ with ‘GLL’ (Great-Looking Legs) and an ‘FLK’ a ‘Funny-Looking Kid,’ a ‘TBP’ is a ‘Total Bloody Pain,’ a ‘GPO’ is ‘Good for Parts Only,’ and ‘TEETH’ is ‘Tried Everything Else, Try Homeopathy.’ Plus, cases which are ‘LOB’ (Load Of B*****ks) and individuals who are ‘TF Bundy’ (Totally F***ed But Unfortunately Not Dead Yet). ‘Digging for worms’ is varicose vein surgery, the ‘departure lounge’ the geriatric ward, while ‘handbag positive’ is a

While the most common call-out for ambulance services is to elderly ladies who’ve fallen over (a ‘nan-down’) and the special ambulances used to transport obese patients are ‘fat trucks,’ regular visitors to A&E on Friday/Saturday nights are also classified. ‘UBI’ is an ‘Unexplained Beer Injury,’ a ‘PFO,’ a drunken patient who’s injured himself falling over, while a ‘PGT,’ ‘got thumped’ instead. One doctor in court had to explain ‘TTFO’ (Told To F*** Off). Fortunately, he came out with: ‘To Take Fluids Orally.’ Oops again! Call centres have similar codes for techni-
cal helplines. A blatantly obvious query is categorised as an ‘RTFM on line 1,’ code for ‘Read The F***ing Manual.’ Which reminds me of a similar code used in East Anglia hospitals until fairly recently: ‘NFN,’ - ‘Normal For Norfolk.’ Finally, as for ‘B’ (Brexit) Day, anyone know when this will be? WITH regard to the charges levied on our group of ‘illegal’ homes to be ‘legalised,’ and your response of March 14, would the ‘bill payer’ change if the original developer was still trading and being encouraged by the town hall to deal directly with the Junta? Unfortunately, David Searl no. The buyer of You and the Law a property buys it with all in Spain rights that go with it and also with charges outstanding. You could have obtained a Certificado Urbanistico from your town hall at the time of purchase which would have revealed this. The 15-year limit to recover debt does not apply here because your house is now part of a Sistema de Cooperación, in which the town hall pays a part of the costs and the homeowner the remainder. Because your inclusion in this ‘co-operation system’ is recent, the time limit does not apply. If it is any consolation, thousands of homeowners along the Spanish coasts are suffering similar charges. Even more annoying is the knowledge that the original developer has got away with not paying.

AFTER 17 years living in this country I have to agree with your article (Thank you to the Spanish health system - Issue 1760). Always an excellent service. Only three weeks ago I rang at 8.45am for a non-urgent check up with our doctor. The receptionist’s reply was ‘9.15?’ Then it was agreed that 10.30am would be perfect. Always the same doctor, sometimes a few minutes late, but sometimes out before the actual appointed time. Torrevieija hospital is more than first class. Sue Gell

Euthanasia I WAS so saddened to read the article about a man who helped his wife with multiple sclerosis to die who could go on trial at a gender violence court (Issue 1763). It is such a sensitive and important subject, and everybody is entitled to their own opinion. But while debates about euthanasia are being carried out, this case proves we must never forget that there are real people, with real lives who are suffering and have been for a long time. A Spanish nurse turned up to do routine obs. She didn’t even acknowledge the patient let alone the visitors. Without speaking she checked her temperature, then left. Last night at 10.15pm, my friend rang her bell and when a nurse came she asked her to help her to make her more HEALTH SYSTEM: An environment of comfortable. She said she would come collective togetherness. back. She did - at 7.30am. So don’t think for one minute that the Spanish way is superior to that of the UK. Lots of Spanish nurses are severely lacking in social skills. In my experience of nursing in the UK and Spain, the vast majority of my colleagues have been caring people irrespective of nationality. ‘Staff of different colours, creeds, nationalities with a variety of languages, all performing their duties in an aura of separateness.’Actually they operate in an environment of collective togetherness and bring a wealth of expertise to their work. We don’t have mass immigration. But without the immigration we have, the NHS would simply not be able to function. I don’t know why you have seen inside a lot of London’s hospitals this winter. VIOLENCE and abuse against women is not only morally abhorrent, it is also costing the Spanish economy billions. A new government report has claimed the cost of gender violence is equivalent to €185 for every person in Spain in the worst case. The estimated overall economic cost ranges between €1.3 billion and €8.5 billion. The latter figure is equivalent to more than one 10th of what Spain budgeted for welfare in 2017. Those costs do not take into account those incurred by the trauma inflicted on children and relatives who witness gender violence first-hand. The government estimates those are equivalent to billions in economic losses. Society clearly has incentives to eradicate the scourge of gender violence. If communities and the government could do more to spare women from mistreatment then they would be happier and free of violence-induced trauma. They would then be able to offer their talents in the workplace alongside the rest of us instead of suffering, often in silence, while their prospects dwindle. The wealth they create could be spent on helping to eradicate gender violence and offer more support to victims. Not only this, but it could be used to help reduce poverty, addiction and other factors that create the conditions for gender violence to thrive. But ultimately, we should never lose sight of the fact that the highest price for gender violence is paid by its victims.

While the prospect of being reunited with bikinis, shorts, and maxi dresses may be a happy one for some of us, many people worry about exposing skin which may have become neglected over the colder months. Breathe life into skin which has been covered up all winter with a quick and easy skincare detox for the face and body to boost circulation and improve skin tone. Begin by body brushing; a centuries-old method of exfoliating and improving skin tone; even helping to reduce the appearance of cellulite. Cycling fun for all by Sally Underwood FRIGILIANA is set to celebrate Labour Day next Wednesday with its fifth annual Pedal Day; a one-hour cycling tour of the town.
All cycling enthusiasts of every ability are able to participate in the event, as the route planned is of a low difficulty level. Participants will leave at noon from Plaza del Ingenio, continuing along Calle Real, Chorruelo, Rosarico la Joaquin, Carlos Cano, Paseo de las 3 Culturas, Avenida Andalucia, and Calle San Sebastian, before finishing at the Plaza del Ingenio. Those interested in taking part can register from 10am to noon at the Plaza del Ingenio. After a cycling tour of Frigiliana, the festive day will continue in the Plaza del Ingenio with a series of performances by the groups Cosmic Debris a local progressive rock group - Rosstown, which will perform classics from funk, soul, blues, and rock and roll, and Los Canallas, a local Pop Rock group. THE rural property market is starting to boom according to data from the National Statistics Office (INE). Last year, the purchase and sale of ‘rustic properties’ in Spain increased by 3.9 per cent compared to 2017. What’s more, 13.6 per cent of all property sales in Spain corresponded to rural real estate, with 138,906 sales of this type of property. Apart from farming, rural homes are increasingly used as second homes, holiday homes or tourism accommodation - this is particularly important given the steady population decline seen in country areas. According to a study by FEMP (Spanish Federation of Municipalities and Provinces) this is a real problem, with more than 4,000 Spanish municipalities having fewer than 1,000 inhabitants and being at risk

Even though they sold or shifted on nearly €90 billion worth of foreclosed assets and bad loans in 2018, real estate continues to pose a high risk to their balance sheets, even all these years after the property crash. The Bank of Spain estimates that banks still have €72 billion tied up in real estate and loans, while credit rating agency Standard & Poor raises the figure to €80 billion - one of the highest stocks in Europe. This translates as 7 per cent of the domestic financial sector’s balance sheet, a percentage which is practically double that recorded before the crisis. S&P argues Spanish banks should divest another €30 billion, leaving exposure to real estate risk below 4 per cent. It is possible, say analysts, this could happen over the course of the next two years. This led to millions of properties being repossessed, and led to a reluctance from the banks to give new mortgages. Some 6.7 per cent of home mortgages were last year taken out by foreigners, with them borrowing an average €133,368, compared to the €124,333 average mortgage given to Spaniards.

Women desire male celebrities, epitomised by Cary Grant and Rock Hudson, who are well-groomed, clean-shaven, fit and handsome. The hairy, dishevelled and unhealthy are not considered attractive. Men dream of models and air hostesses with beautiful faces and shapely figures, inspired by Sophia Loren and Vivien Leigh. The coarse or rotund are of less appeal. Each year a Miss World contest is held and provides television entertainment for millions of viewers. Some protestors claim the parade reduces the women to the level of a cattle auction, but they are in a minority. It is widely recognised that we are born with various blessings. Some of us have a developed intellect, others physical strength, a sunny disposition or sharp business acumen. Some are good at ‘fixing things.’ Others are blessed with good looks, so why should this not be recognised and celebrated? There is a range of daily newspa-

ternative beliefs and religious practices. Most families sit round a table together for meals. They bond over fried eggs for breakfast and homeprepared lunches and suppers. The children’s parents - mother and father - have been together since before the birth of the eldest and are likely to remain so. In a majority of cases the parents know where the children are practically all the time. When there are problems with bullying or unwanted attention, the children are likely to confide in their parents for a solution. If they misbehave at school, a caning may instil discipline. At home either parent can decide whether the offending offspring deserves a slap on the bottom or a ‘clip round the ear.’ Health and safety issues are sensibly appropriate for a mature society. For example, it is recommended that road workers wear face protection when using pneumatic drills to dig roads. The government may offer such guidelines, but greater responsibility is invested in parents, teachers and employers. Sadly there are no flights to this destination. This is, believe it or not, England in the 1950s.

Mercedes-Benz B180 Sport ROAD TEST by Nick Fletcher THE Mercedes-Benz B Class is a spacious compact family MPV aimed at those seeking better accommodation for passengers and their luggage, and its stand-out sales point is the premium image it carries over from the company’s larger, more prestigious models. The latest version has sleek subtle styling cues which give the B Class an elegant exterior appearance, and inside, the beautiful cabin design is classy and impressive and immediately makes you feel you are driving a car which might cost twice the price. In fact, the entry versions start at €31,188 (£26,980) and are very well-equipped with climate control, LED headlights, cruise control, sat-nav, reversing camera, Bluetooth connectivity, alloy wheels, digital instru-
ment cluster behind the steering wheel and a central infotainment screen. There are also optional upgrade packages to add extra features. Standard safety kit includes forward collision warning and lane-keep assist. Accommodation in this compact MPV is spacious for five adults, with excellent head and leg room, and the boot at 455 litres is one of the largest in the class and can be increased to 710 litres as the rear seat can slide forward. With rear seats folded flat, you get a substantial 1,540 litres. There are petrol and diesel engine options with differing power outputs, and my model is the entry-level B180 Sport priced at €31,188 (£26,980) with a punchy four-cylinder 136hp 1.3-litre petrol unit and standard seven-speed auto gearbox. The 0-100kph time is 9.0 seconds and top speed is 212kph (132mph). Emis-
sions are 125g/km and average fuel consumption is 16.8kpl (47.1mpg). While the model is labelled Sport, don’t expect the performance on this entry version to be very sporty. However it is perfectly adequate for normal needs and the suspension set-up reflects the targeted family use by putting the emphasis on all-round comfort. With light precise steering and a nice overall balance, the B Class drives well with excellent cornering composure and its higher driving position provides good all-round visibility. Overall the B Class comes across as an ideal family car, offering space, comfort and practicality. Rivals include the BMW 2 Series Active Tourer and the Volkswagen Golf SV and while both are strong contenders, in my view neither can match the level of kudos which comes with the famous Mercedes Benz three-pointed star.

BARCELONA are on the verge of claiming the La Liga title, with their next game against Levante quite likely to be the match they wrap it up. They beat Real Sociedad 2-1 in the 33rd round of games this weekend without never really getting out of second gear. They certainly never reached the performance levels they did in last week’s Champions League triumph against Manchester United, though credit should go to Real Sociedad for putting up a spirited fight. They defended well in the first half, holding Barcelona at bay until the 44th minute when central defender Clement Lenglet got a head to the ball to put Barca into the lead. Real Sociedad didn’t let their heads drop and equalised in the 62nd minute when Juanmi netted the ball following a slide-rule pass from Mikel Merino. Things were not looking good for the Spanish team when they found themselves 2-1 behind against Belgium on Sunday. But Carla Suárez Navarro stepped forward to turn the tie around. The 30-year-old did what she had to do to force a fifth rubber and beat Yanina Wickmayer in straight sets. Carla then teamed up with Garbiñe Muguruza to win the deciding match, 76(4), 2-6, 6-2, and send Spain back to the World Group. The tie had been level at 1-1 before Sunday’s play.
