Homing scheme A NEW initiative to provide homes for vulnerable people is to start in Palma next month. In conjunction with SAM (Servicio de Acogida Muncipal), the branch of Social Services which helps rehome victims of sexual and domestic abuse, local government has offered to buy apartments for the cause. The idea is to find homes in less vulnerable areas of Palma, with good access to local transport and services. Palma locals can apply to sell their property to the scheme for competitive prices as part of the €950.000 project.

Feral felines OUT of control numbers of feral cats has become a problem for town halls in Mallorca, because of a lack of funding for sterilisation programmes. So the Council of Mallorca’s local co-operation department has responded by making financial assistance available. With the exception of a handful of town halls outside Palma - which deals with the issue itself the take-up has been widespread. Arta, Escorca, Felanitx, Petra, Soller and Vilafranca haven’t as yet.

DOGO ARGENTINO: Potentially dangerous if not well-trained and cared for.

Savage attack AN uncontrolled Dogo Argentino reportedly entered a home in Marratxi, maiming two dogs and killing another. According to the owner of the injured dogs, complaints about his neighbour’s ‘aggressive’ Dogo had previously been made. However, police said that all paperwork was correct. Angry and upset about the ‘vicious attack,’ the victim has asked for the dog to be removed. But because no people were harmed, police have said that this is not possible.

Infant critical A BABY was left in a critical condition after being knocked down by a car in the Soledad neighbourhood of Palma. The driver, who later tested positive in a police drugs test, reportedly ran in fear of his life as family members surrounded his car, demanding justice.

Although he fled the scene, the driver did call emergency services to the scene to attend to the one-year-old infant. The driver has since been arrested pending the outcome of the child’s recovery. The infant remains in a critical condition at Son Llatzer Hospital.

HUNDREDS of medical professionals from around the world descended on Mallorca recently for the eighth International IVIRMA Congress on Reproductive Medicine. The conference was attended by 1,600 doctors from 70 countries who gathered to hear about and to discuss the latest developments in reproductive medicine. Amongst the subjects under discussion were potential new embryo selection method, male factor infertility, and the emerging science of gene editing. “Bringing together the best researchers allows us to debate the latest trends in

this field and push the limits of reproductive medicine in the name of our patients,” said Dr Juan García Velasco, Director of IVI Madrid and the congress's scientific director. “Every time we meet, we are on the cusp of more powerful and exciting innovation, and this year was no exception.” IVIRMA Global was founded in 2017 when the Valencian Infertility Institute (IVI) merged with Reproductive Medicine Associates of New Jersey (RMANJ). Together, the companies comprise the largest group dedicated to assisted reproduction in the world.

Attack on parents A MAN faces 12 years in prison after allegedly brutally attacking his parents and forcing his father to eat his prized Miro painting. The suspect is said to have a history of drug addiction and consequent violence. The son reportedly appeared at his parent’s home in Felanitx early in the evening, despite having a restraining order. He is accused of breaking into the house and restraining his father, punching him and threatening to cut his

throat when his mother tried to appeal to her son. The son is believed to have taken all the money he could find in the house and stole his mother ’s bank card. Before leaving, he reportedly took his father ’s favourite possession, a dedicated painting by Joan Miro, and ripped it to pieces before forcing his father to eat it. The man now faces eight different charges of violence, abuse, destruction of property and breaking his restraining order.

Ex cycling pro ‘debts’ THE Mallorca-based cycling holiday business owned by former professional cyclist, Stephen Roche, is reportedly in financial difficulty with debts approaching €600,000. Roche, 59, from Ireland, won the 1987 Triple Crown with his wins of the Giro d’Italia, Tour de France and Road World Championship. Two hotels, which claim Roche owes them almost €400,000, have started legal action against him and are seeking to make his business bankrupt. They also state that Roche

has been negligent in continuing to trade, whilst insolvent. According to press reports, Roche has told Extra.ie that it is his intention to repay the debts, raising some of the funds from the sale of a property in France and some from future cycling projects he is planning. Visitors to Roche’s website are now diverted to an alternative cycling holiday business, owned by another former professional cyclist and friend of his. The case is ongoing.

Cathedral fire plan IN the wake of the devastating fire at the Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris, the authorities at the Cathedral of Mallorca, are considering the consequences of a fire in the ancient building. The Head of Heritage, Mercè Gambús has said that no building is immune to the consequences of a fire, but that the main building in Palma is predominantly supported by iron rather than wood. Only a small section of the dome is supported by a wooden

infrastructure and this is regularly treated with a fire retardant. There is also an emergency plan in place for the evacuation of people. The Administration has stated that the cathedral should have plans for the removal of valuable artefacts from the building in the case of any fire. But Gambús has pointed out the impossibility of activating such a plan, particularly given the weight of many of the artefacts held there.

Sant Jordi book stops THE Gremi de Llibreters de Mallorca presented a new edition of Sant Jordi on Tuesday. They will set up 69 book stops distributed along the Plaza de Cort and the Plaza de España in Palma. This year’s World Book Day is on Tuesday, and there will be plenty of recitals, book signings, storytelling, music and parades. The Mallorca Literary Foundation is promoting Poeteca and Poetraca, this year’s novelty presentation. For the first time this year the Gremi de Floristes collaborates with the Gremi de Llibretes de Mallorca. Florists will be present throughout the day in the centre of Palma. Unesco’s World Book Day Festival will take place from 9am to 9pm. And Gremi book stores are offering a 10 per cent discount on all their books on the day.

RAIDS: Arrests made in Son Banya. OPERATION Greenland saw 70 police officers descend on Son Banya in a large scale drug raid earlier this week, resulting in six arrests and eight people under further investigation. The operation was headed by Antonio Suárez, chief of the UDYCO (Unidad de Drogas y Crimen Organizado), the special unit for drugs and organised crime. Some €30,000 of cash

was seized from one of the drug ‘selling points’ as well as large amounts of drugs, including heroin, cocaine, hashish and marihuana. Two properties have been identified as store houses for the merchandise in addition to 20 homes as purchase points. According to reports, one of those detained is related to La Sole, the matriarch of the drugs cartel in Son Banya, currently serv-

ing time in Mallorca’s women’s Prison. These raids come as part of the current government’s attempt to clamp down on narco-trafficking on the island. According to a statement released by the National Police regarding ‘Operation Groenlandia’; Mallorca will not be free from drugs until ‘the last shack in Son Banya is knocked down.’

Mobile offence SOPHISTICATED cameras to capture images of drivers using mobile phones have been installed on roads in Mallorca. Two of the cameras are on Via Cintura in Palma and on the Inca motorway, but police sources suggest there are more. The aim is to reduce driver distraction, which causes a third of all road deaths in Spain. Offenders will be fined €200 and a three-point deduction from the licence.

Bilingual Baleares BALEARIC collective PLIS Educacion Por Favor, have made a plea to UNESCO for the Mallorquin language to be respected as the co-official language on the island, as Catalan is on the mainland. Grup d’Accio Balear (GAB) claim that the island dialect is significantly different to Catalan and contributes to local culture and consequently should be recognised as such.

Teen fall A TEENAGE student was rescued on Tuesday after falling during a school trip in the Cingles de Son Rullan area, near Deia. Firefighters from Soller and Llucmajor immobilised the 16year-old after a four-metre drop and took him to the hospital. According to reports, the student became dizzy after hitting his back on a rock during the fall. The student was taken to Son Llatzer and is now in a more stable condition.

Missing boy found SAMUEL BENJAMIN DE VRIES, five, was reported missing on April 10 by his father. The boy disappeared in Calvia and has been in Germany since November with his German mother, who has been in contact with the father, with whom she shares custody. There is an ongoing investigation into Samuel’s circumstances and well-being.

IN PORT: The USS Abraham Lincoln is in Palma until Saturday.

Carrier docks A US aircraft carrier has docked in Palma and will remain in the city’s harbour until Saturday. The USS Abraham Lincoln arrived in port at around 2pm on Monday. The more than 332-metre-long ship, which is due to sail onto the eastern Mediterranean and the Red Sea, docked some distance off Mallorca’s coast. Spanish government representatives met with the ship’s captain and officers after their arrival on Monday. The Nimitz-class carrier left its base in

Norfolk, Virginia on Monday April 1. It carried its aircraft and around 5,600 crew members across the Atlantic before arriving in the Mediterranean and making for Mallorca. The ship, which can carry up to 85 warplanes, is rendezvousing with the Spanish frigate Mendez Nuñez. The two are due to be part of a training group for two months. The USS Abraham Lincoln is set to sail from the Red Sea to the Persia Gulf, then the Indian Ocean and the Pacific before arriving in San Diego, California in October.

Brexit affects Baleares BRITISH tourist numbers have dropped significantly this year, down by 5.6 per cent compared to this time in 2018. Alianza para la Excelencia Turistica, Exceltur, stated they believe this result is due to the uncertainty surrounding Brexit. The Baleares and Canary Islands are the two Spanish provinces to suffer this drop, as they benefit most from the British tourist market.

Culture of quality THE Palma Beach Association, made up of 46 companies, this week joined forces with the town hall to present the latest campaign to ‘minimise the negative effects of excesses’ in Playa de Palma. Mayor Antoni Noguera said the public-private campaign aims to place the resort in a positive light and emphasise gastronomy and culture ‘of quality.’

But it is expected the economy will benefit by many million more in the coming years as fans of the series visit the country to view the locations used. The eighth and final blockbuster series was filmed in locations around the world, with Spain once more being fea-

tured heavily including the Sevillian town of Osuna where filming continued for 15 days. Some 650 extras were taken on, with a total of 1,000 people working on the film in that time. This boosted the town’s economy for those days, and now a tourism boom is expected for the usually sleepy municipality. Spain is becoming increas-

ingly attractive for filming thanks to the improved tax and economic advantages offered to production companies. Mainland Spain offers a tax incentive to international filming in the form of a tax rebate of between 15 per cent and 25 per cent (up to €5 million) depending on the autonomous community. The Canaries offer tax breaks of up to 40 per cent.

GREENPEACE has hung a giant bill on a Madrid skyscraper to raise awareness of what they claimed was the price of political and corporate inaction on climate change. Inaction from politicians and corporations has racked up an environmental and social bill which will ultimately have to be paid by the people, Greenpeace said. “They are

costing us our lives, they are costing us the planet. And we are not going to pay the bill,” Greenpeace said. “The bad practices of large companies and current policies not only destroys the environment, but also creates an increasingly unequal society with fewer rights,” the NGO added. Greenpeace’s protest comes as demonstrations against climate change have stepped up in recent months. Spanish school pupils have repeatedly joined hundreds of thousands of others from around the world in striking from lessons every Friday in protest against pollution.

GBP: Instead of crashing out of the EU on April 12, PM Theresa May asked for a postponement until the end of June. Much to the delight of tabloid newspapers and headline-writers, October 31 was instead announced as the new date. The inevitable was already something investors had factored in, and despite it being a slight bit of sterling-positive news, it was so anticipated that the air around the announcement was anticlimactic, and the pound was unmoved. The new extension is seen by many as a mere prolonging of uncertainty for the currency; it’s important to note that the price to pay for not crashing out of the EU on April 12 comes with European elections which must be held in May, otherwise the UK leaves without a deal on June 1. For sterling the result was an average weekly loss of 0.4% and it is down by 1.6% from a month ago. EUR: Strengthening by an average 0.3% against other currencies, the euro was the top performer of the week, after Euroland economic da-

ta exceeded expectations. The euro added two thirds of a US cent and went up by seven eighths of a cent against sterling. Apart from the European Central Bank’s President Mario Draghi suggesting economic weakness in the Eurozone had been longer-lasting than expected, the rest of European news was all positive. Eurozone investor confidence delivered a pleasant surprise, as did industrial production in Germany, France and Italy which came in higher than initially forecast. USD: The Federal Open Market Committee stated they will be patient in making adjustments to monetary policy, and while it seemed some of the market was looking for hints of a rate cut, there wasn’t a mention and USD strengthened slightly from this stance. It is a fifth of a cent lower on the week against sterling. US employment data from last week was also better than predicted, with nonfarm payrolls increasing by 196k in March. Put that phone down THE Guardia Civil’s traffic division will be able to examine a driver ’s mobile after a serious road accident. Bartolome Vargas, a public prosecutor attached to the Supreme Court and Spain’s Road Safety coordinator, sent out an order allowing traffic police to scrutinise calls made and received prior to a crash. Studies show that using a mobile while driving increases the accident risk by 20 per cent and this now incurs a € 2 0 0 f i n e, p lu s th e loss of three points from a driving licence. The new ruling does not allow onthe-spot inspections and investigators must seek a court order before asking a phone company to list calls on a driver’s phone at the time of the accident. Nor will all calls automatically imply an offence, as using a Bluetooth system is legal, Vargas conceded. The Guardia Civil also want powers enabling them to pursue drivers with mobile apps that warn of roadblocks or drink and drugs controls. Trafficdeclines considerably minutes after they set up a roadblock due, presumably, to these apps, they believe.

Tourism holds BRITAIN and Spain remain popular destinations for travellers from either country despite Brexit, industry data has shown. Spending from British travellers has grown by 5.4 per cent so far this year compared to 2018, according to figures from the Exceltur industry association. Data from the Hosteltur hotel body showed the number of bookings made for Easter week has risen by 12 per cent compared to last April. The Costa Blanca’s HOSBEC industry association’s figures showed the number of reservations made by British holidaymakers in Benidorm grew by 7 per cent year-on-year in the second half of March. “The British are returning positive figures despite uncertainty over Brexit,” the association said. British travellers are still the biggest single nonSpanish group of holidaymakers in Benidorm, the same data showed. They accounted for 42.7 per cent of all overnight stays in the second half of March, HOSBEC said. The figures follow a push from the Costa Blanca tourism industry and authorities to draw British travellers during this spring. HOSBEC said in February the industry believed bookings from British travellers would pick back up once the factors causing Brexit uncertainty were resolved.

Further delay By Joe Gerrard BRITAIN’S prime minister narrowly avoided a no-deal Brexit last week after securing an 11th-hour extension to the withdrawal date, giving her and Westminster until October 31 to pass a deal. Theresa May secured the sixmonth extension after meeting with leaders from the EU27 in Brussels. Together they struck a compromise between May’s request for a short extension and Brussels officials including EU Council President Donald Tusk’s call for a year-long delay. The agreement, dubbed a ‘flextension,’ allows lawmakers in London time to come to a consensus on the terms of Britain’s withdrawal. Britain will be able to leave the EU if a deal is passed before the deadline. But an EU summit will be held in June to monitor Britain’s behaviour after leaders including French president Emmanuel Macron expressed concerns it could undermine EU business going forward. Donating blood in Spain LIVING in Spain can bring with it an array of issues which may not have been encountered when living in the UK. There are lots of things to consider, and we are here to help try to make the transition and life in Spain a little easier by compiling a series of helpful facts and figures relating to a variety of topics. In Spain, Blood Components and Services are provided by 17 Regional Blood Transfusion Services. Despite their autonomous operations management, every regional service is fully incorporated into a unique and common Public National Health System, supplying a cohesive blood transfusion care to all citizens, residents, and visitors in Spain based on 100 per cent voluntary and non-remunerated blood donation. For more general information, visit www.msps.es. Anyone who has lived continuously in the UK between 1980 and 1996 (a minimum of one year) will not be able to donate blood in Spain due to the risk of transmitting mad cow disease. Similarly, there are restrictions if you have received a blood transfer in the UK. However, each region may have different rules about donation. Call the donation helpline on 935 573 500. Alternatively, visit www.donorsang.gencat.cat to find out if you are eligible. If you are eligible, you can give blood at your local hospital, or via the Spanish Red Cross (Cruz Roja) at one of their clinics, or in one of their mobile units. You can check dates and locations by visiting www.donarsangre.org. A donor card is not necessary to give blood. On the first visit you will have to provide DNI, NIE, passport or a driving licence. If you are already registered in the Blood Bank, you only need a donor card or a document with your name and surname. The process of blood donation takes just 10 minutes in which 450 ml are collected (equating to 10 per cent of the total blood circulation of an adult person). Despite huge technological advances, the only way for hospitals to obtain blood is through the generosity of the public. The blood is carefully screened for disease to make sure it is safe. After a tattoo, you must wait four months to be eligible to donate. After surgery, the exclusion period will depend on the type of intervention. After minor surgical procedures, you cannot donate blood for seven days or until you are fully recovered. After undergoing major surgery, you will not be able to donate blood for four months. The rarest blood type is AB, present in 1 per cent of Caucasians, according to research by the America Red Cross. Blood transfusions are carried out daily in Spanish hospitals with more than 6,200 patients being given them, of whom almost a quarter are fighting cancer and a similar figure receiving transfusions during or after surgery. Spain has around two million donors in total, but needs closer to four million. This information is for guidance only, and should not be taken as legal advice. Campaigns kick off By Joe Gerrard THE official window for general election campaigning has now opened, following a lively pre-campaign phase which saw parties set out their stalls to voters. The official period for campaigning began on Friday. Posters have now gone up in towns and cities across the country and party leaders are currently on the trail to galvanise their support bases and win over undecided voters. The talking points have broadly fallen along a left-right divide with some cross over and exchange between the two. All parties have released detailed manifestos featuring policies on education, the economy, healthcare, defence, foreign policy and social issues and others. But a small number of points have made it to the fore. Key talking points for the left have centred around social and eco-

VOTE PITCH: Campaigning is now in full swing. nomic policies. Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez said his ruling left-leaning PSOE was the only ‘moderate’ party which voters could elect on Sunday April 28. Sanchez laid out a programme which included raising the minimum wage, helping young people to buy homes, working to end gender violence, tackling rural depopulation and fighting against climate change. The leftist Podemos has emphasised the similar issues. Speaking in Palma in Mallorca,

leader Pablo Iglesias focused on working conditions, proposing the curbing of temporary contracts and raising the minimum wage to €1,200. PSOE and Podemos both reportedly have a pact to avoid criticising each other on the campaign trail, likely in preparation for post-election coalition wrangling. Meanwhile on the right, parties have focused on issues including the ongoing independence issue in Cataluña and on further opening the Spanish

economy to private business and financial control. All parties on the right have made cuts to taxes and deregulation a part of the latter issue. The conservative Partido Popular (PP), the centrist Ciudadanos and the far-right Vox have each tried to convince right-wing voters they are best able to deliver their vision for Spain. The PP has made that appeal a central part of its broader electoral strategy. Campaign videos have told voters considering backing Vox that their ballots would be wasted because of the way votes are allocated for the Congress of Deputies, favouring more established groups. Ciudadanos has slightly departed from free market orthodoxy. Leader Albert Rivera has proposed easing pressure on businesses while curbing temporary work contracts and offering more state aid for families.

Profile: Regional parties WITH a general election looming on Sunday April 28, we are profiling each of the political parties vying for victory in the vote. When voters cross their ballots, not only in the general election but also for local, regional and European polls in May, there will be region-specific parties standing. Regional parties vary in ideology, policy platforms and purpose. Cataluña and the Basque Country are both home to nationalist and pro-independence groups, but there are others who stand to campaign on issues which are particular to a given region. Coalicio Compromis stand exclusively in the Valencia Region. They espouse left-wing, environmental and Valencian regional positions including promoting its language and is currently part of the governing coalition in the Corts Valencianes assembly. Mallorca is home to the Mes per Mallorca and the Proposta per les Illes party. The former is on the left while the latter lies in the political centre and both have a handful of seats in the Balearic Islands Assembly. In Andalucia, the far-left Candidatura Unitaria de Tabajoadores (CUT) has one seat in the region’s parliament.

Banks drafted for rail bonds SPAIN’S ADIF railway infrastructure body has called in four leading banks to sell bonds worth at least €500 million to fund the building of new high-speed lines. Spanish banks BBVA and Santander will sell the bonds alongside London-based HSBC and France’s Societe General. The sale is set to be done as ‘green bonds’ which were first offered in 2017 and again last year. ADIF president Isabel Pardo said green bonds were part of plans to improve sustainability and become more environmentally-friendly.

IMF Spain deficit forecast SPAIN’S public spending deficit will be 2.3 per cent of Gross Domestic Product (GDP) this year and remain below 3 per cent afterwards, the International Monetary Fund (IMF) has predicted. The IMF forecasted a fall in the difference between the Treasury’s income and outgoings of 0.4 percentage points from 2018 to this year. Spain’s deficit was 2.7 per cent of GDP last year. The deficit will remain slightly below 2.5 per cent of GDP until 2022 when it will rise and reach 2.8 per cent of GDP by 2024, the IMF

The IMF said then that ‘credible’ measures would be needed to bring the deficit down. The international lending body said the forecasts were based in part on predictions that economic growth will slow in Spain and elsewhere in the coming years. Spain’s national debt will fall

gradually in GDP percentage terms from 96 per cent this year to 95 per cent in 2020 and 93 per cent by 2023. The equivalent average figures for the eurozone are expected to be 83.6 per cent this year and 81.8 per cent in 2020. Spain is second to Italy in terms of eurozone countries with the highest national debt as a percentage of GDP. The IMF said it based its forecasts for Spain on budget plans drawn up by the ruling left-leaning Partido Socialista (PSOE) last year and other measures approved since.

SPANISH government ministers have approved funding worth €452 million to support small and medium-sized companies. Industry Minister Reyes Maroto, who announced the measures last week ahead of their approval, said the package would be split into three parts. Almost €96 million will be available for young entrepreneurs, €50 million will go to boosting overseas trade for companies and €307 million will help with energy efficiency. Maroto said: “These measures seek to eliminate obstacles to small business growth and international expansion.”

Number of companies rises A TOTAL of 9,386 companies were created in Spain in February, up 7.4 per cent on the same month in 2018 the latest National Institute for Statistics (INE) figures show. Almost €848 million in capital was invested into the founding of the companies during February, an increase of 86.7 per cent year-on-year. A total of 2,311 companies folded in February this year, ac-

cording to INE data. About 19.4 per cent of new firms were in the trade sector while 15.6 per cent were in the construction industry. A total of 82.5 per cent of companies which folded did so voluntarily, with 6.9 per cent ceasing to exist due to mergers and 10.6 per cent closing for other reasons.

Turnover increases SPAIN’S chemical industry increased its turnover by 4 per cent to more than €65.6 billion in 2018, the largest amount of growth ever recorded for the sector the Business Federation of the Spanish Chemical Industry (FEIQUE) said.

ONE beneficiary of Euro Weekly News during its history was Leo Bermejo, who died from a rare form of cancer despite a fundraising effort and campaign on his behalf. Many readers will remember Leo by his nickname Leo the Lion. The boy, from Vera Playa in Almeria Province, was diagnosed with a rare and aggressive form of brain cancer in September 2015. Leo’s family contacted Euro Weekly News in January 2017 when he was aged four shortly after he had several tumours removed. Leo’s mother Karen Keefe said they aimed to raise €176,000 so Leo could travel to the US for pioneering treatment which they hoped would rid him of the illness. Euro Weekly News journalists soon got to work on raising awareness for the four-year-old’s plight. More than €75,000 was raised for Leo in eight days, in part thanks to our publicity and efforts on the ground from Almeria Sales Manager Jackie Butcher. Attention from the public soon followed. Former Real Madrid defender Leo Bermejo, who shared a love of football with the four-year-old as well as a name, retweeted a Euro Weekly News Twitter post calling for help. By May 2017 Leo had flown to the US and completed his proton therapy treatment. He was welcomed back in Almeria on Sunday May 7. But an MRI scan in September of that year showed the tumours were once again growing. An urgent appeal for more support, including for a dedicated private nurse, was made with the help of Euro Weekly News in November. But it was not enough and weeks later, on Friday December 1, Leo passed away days before his fifth birthday. His last words were: “I love you.” Karen told Euro Weekly News after Leo’s passing that she was grateful for the support she had received. She added this newspaper’s publicity had helped to show the true face of cancer in children.

LEAPY LEE SAYS IT OTHERS THINK IT ONCE again, it appears strangely coincidental that a subject I chose in a previous column seems to manifest on a wider scale the following week. In the last blurb, I wrote about the pathetic retributions being passed on by our so-called Judges. Well this past week, one of those judgements truly did take the whole tin. It concerned the case of the Turkish born toerag who has apparently been fighting deportation for some five years. This man is a violent criminal, who has never applied for citizenship, and over the years, has been convicted of robbery, criminal damage, burglary, assault and shoplifting. In 2016 a judge decided because he had become the member of a notorious North London gang, he had (wait for it) ‘integrated well, into a part of UK society.’ The judge decided this made him a ‘home-grown criminal’ and allowed him to stay. (I defy anyone to make that one up!). In a series of immigration appeals his blood- sucking lawyers have cost the British taxpayers untold thousands of pounds. And he’s still here - awaiting yet another public purse draining appeal. Sometime I truly do lose the will to live. What with the Brexit fiasco and judgements like this, is it any wonder our once proud British nation has become the laughing stock of the world? If we’d had this lot of ‘do gooders’ and pathetic politi-

LAUGHING STOCK: Pathetic retributions by judges? cians in 1939, the whole population would have been under the jackboot of the Nazis by 1940! Another so-called ‘judgement’ also caught the ol’ boy’s eye this week. A serial drink-driver was ‘given a chance’ by Judge Sarah Buckingham,

even after the accused had crashed into three other vehicles and needed rescuing from her own blazing car. This was her third offence and she admitted to dangerous driving while three times over the limit. It wasn’t even the judge’s almost

unbelievable decision to give her another chance it was actually her reason for doing so. She was deferring sentence for three months, she said, to see if the defendant could address her issues ‘because she was a woman.’ ‘Had Miss Parry been a man,’ the judge added; ‘it would have been straight down the stairs.’ Hold on a minute, is that not a more blatant case of sexism than you would ever be likely to hear? Can you imagine the scream up if she had told a man that if he were a woman, he would have been immediately incarcerated? Loose Women would have had a field day. The roads to Westminster would have been jammed with Boadicea lookalikes and men would be going without their dinner or sexual favours for weeks. As it is I have yet to see one protest from the poor beleaguered males of the populace. Come on fellas you can’t all have become transgenders. THERE is a lot of confusion over registering on the Padron. To do so one must be habitually resident in the town, so that excludes holiday home owners. I know for many years some town halls have turned a blind eye or even encouraged such registration. The municipality get financial assistance in the form of subsidies and grants from provincial, regional and government authorities for the provision of services. Until a few years ago the Padron registration was valid until cancelled by the named person. However, now EU Nationals must renew their registration every five years, non EU nationals every two years. Elaine Gonzales

Deplorable shelter I WAS so disgusted to read about the dog kennels in Malaga which was said to have kept 80 dogs in just 16 small enclosures. Well done to the Guardia Civil for raiding this ‘shelter’ and cracking down on negligent animal ownership. Fact checking REGARDING a letter concerning the theft of an EU Citizen’s Registration certificate (green paper) in your previous edition. The writer complained that having reported the theft in Barcelona, upon applying for a replacement they had problems because the report (denuncia) did not show that the certificate had been stolen. Whilst inconvenient to the writer it should be apparent that a crime report showing just a synopsis of what was stolen cannot be used as proof that a specific item was stolen. In this case the EU Citizen Registration Cert. The set fee, currently, to replace a certificate is €12, whether that is because of loss, theft, change of address etc. Julian Ward

I am a retired Brit living in Germany, who left Spain after 15 years, and who has become so disenchanted with our UK government and scare-mongering UK press. People misguidedly talk of the need for a second referendum which shows how little they understand the democratic process. The vote was the vote and the result was the result. What is, in my view, important is to leave the EU with a deal that protects the rights of the individuals and trade which in turn will protect jobs for those still needing to work and health care for those relying on the Department of Works and Pension (DWP). ‘Horror’ at smash I WAS horrified to see the photos in last week’s Euro Weekly News of the bus which smashed into nine cars in Malaga after its driver had a heart attack. It is so lucky that no one was injured, although I still feel sorry for pedestrians and owners of the cars which were hit as the incident must have come as quite a shock. You reported that the driver had previously undergone a medical test. This incident is a stark reminder that despite medical checks and restrictions for some suffering from particular conditions, these are never any guarantees about safety behind the wheel. OUR VIEW Ensuring opportunity A NEW study which showed fewer millennials are making it into Spain’s middle class compared to previous generations makes for worrying reading. The Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) found half of those born between 1983 and 2002 have or will make it into the middle class by age 20. The equivalent figure for ‘baby boomers,’ those born between 1942 and 1964, was 60 per cent. All governments champion economic prosperity and their commitment to it is shown by the enthusiasm of officials to cite Gross Domestic Product (GDP) figures among others. But ensuring a country is rich is half the battle. The key to true prosperity is making sure that wealth reaches as many people as possible. Good, well-funded education for the young and quality jobs for them once they leave school is a crucial part of this. Not only does it benefit them, but it ensures public coffers are furnished with adequate tax revenue to spend for the benefit of us all. This virtuous cycle, known as the ‘multiplier effect’ in economics, can break and become a vicious one if wealth is concentrated in fewer and fewer hands. An EU study found a lack of opportunities during the last recession saw 133,000 highly-skilled workers leave Spain from 2007 to 2017. If such workers leave they take their talents with them and deprive the public purse and society with the means of making economic improvements. Once established, that vicious cycle is hard to break.
