Clean water NERJA Council has released the results of tests on the town’s bathing water off the main beaches. According to the council, the water is ‘excellent for swimming.’ The study carried out by the Junta de Andalucia on April 1, is the first of the season to check on the quality of water. The sea water showed far lower levels of certain bacteria than the maximum allowed by law, and was ‘excellent’ quality. The town hall told locals and tourists: “Now during these holidays you can enjoy our wonderful weather and our beaches.” The delays in opening the town’s underwater sewage treatment plant had caused concern by environmentalists after it was claimed nine tons of wet wipes and other rubbish had been found on Nerja’s sea bed.

According to Spanish media, the report also rejects the theory put forward by the owner of the land where Julen fell suggesting the toddler was killed by subsequent rescue attempts. The post-mortem reportedly shows Julen died of trauma to his spine and head ‘a few minutes’ after his fall. Experts also revealed the boy did not free fall down the borehole but was ‘slowed down’ by clothing and material from within the hole. A MAN has reportedly been stabbed by a passerby in a random incident in Motril. The attack allegedly took place on Calle Fina as the victim cleaned a shop window. According to media reports, the man claims a stranger came up to him, took out a knife and stabbed him

The alleged incident took place at the La Posta petrol station, at the top of Motril. The suspect is said to have worn a mask and hood to hide his identity.

In an interview with Spanish media, Jose Rosello and Victoria Garcia, said: “Beyond the pain, it is a relief to know that he did not suffer.” Jose also rejected the claims made by David Serrano, the owner of the land where Julen fell. Asked about allegations Julen could have been killed by rescue attempts,

“[We want] to reduce part of the tax burden borne by people with limited economic re s ourc e s in our municipality.” He added: “This council continues to promote social policies of support for the most vulnerable residents.”

Julen’s parents speak out the father said: “We have never supported him [Serrano] and never will.” He added: “It is further pain and created doubts.”

The aid, which can be applied for in person at the town hall, could be given t o t hose who have been registered as a resident in Ri ncon de l a Vi ct or i a throughout the year, who hold full ownership or tenancy on a single home.

Jose explained he and his wife now have “no relationship” with Serrano, adding: “He has the right to defend himself in any way, but what we do not agree is that his lawyer said that we supported his report when it was not true.” Meanwhile, the Prosecutor’s Office revealed it has ruled out investigating any others as part of the criminal case into negligent manslaughter in Julen’s death. This leaves David Serrano as the only person under investigation.

By Sally Underwood RESIDENTS in Nerja are complaining rain is ruining the towns sports facilities. The director of the Club Deportivo Cultural Nerja Soccer-Sala, one of the facilities reportedly most affected, claimed: “Every time four drops of rain fall we cannot use it and we have to throw towels on the floor and pray that it stops raining.” The official went on: “It is true this season we have not had too many problems, but it is enough that there were four rain showers, so we had to suspend training, and if it happens on a Saturday, we cancel the game. Teams from away and referees have come around for nothing, and it gives us a bad image.” Nerja Council said it is working to fix issues at sporting facilities throughout the municipality. Last week, it emerged the town’s municipal indoor pool had remained unopened a year after closing due to technical problems. According to Spanish media, the site was closed in March 2018 after technicians found problems with the building’s roof following heavy rains.

Spain is famous the world over for its commemorations to mark the Bible story of Jesus Christ’s death and resurrection. Each town and city is home to several religious brotherhoods who don

special costumes to take part in processions held throughout the week. Different brotherhoods wear different coloured robes - or nazarenos - to show which group they are members of. Processions took place on Palm Sunday and take place today on Holy Thursday, tomorrow on Good Friday and Easter Sunday. The parades held are specific to the part of The Passion story remembered on that day. Processions throughout Spain all feature Pasos; elaborately-decorated floats depicting New Testament fig-

ures such as Jesus Christ, the apostles and the Virgin Mary. The parades take different forms and have distinct tones depending on the region. Processions in Andalucia have a celebratory atmosphere, particularly in the provinces of Granada, Malaga and Sevilla. Those in Castilla y Leon, particularly in the provinces of Camora and Valladolid, have a more sombre tone. The processions are accompanied by marching bands who play religious pieces, while marchers parade through the streets.

No-man’s land PARQUE VICTORIA is in demand by those seeking housing. What most do not know is that the area in is ‘noman’s land.’ Although Parque Victoria is legally recognised by the council of Rincon de la Victoria, it has not been treated as such. Mayor Francisco Salado confirmed the council handles the rubbish collection service but does not perform other services. Head of Vistabahia Urbanisation, Rafael Morales, said urbanisations are connected but the roads cannot be used as they are inaccessible due to fences

and the thefts of electric cables. Parque Victoria has no pavements leading to the shopping centre and a poor bus route. Neighbours claim they have not received a positive response from the previous government in office. And even though they pay the IBI, they still have to pay for the street lighting, maintenance, and green spaces. Now the Council has made public a plan of conditioning and embellishment of roundabouts and urbanisations in response to the neighbour’s complaints.

Aggression prevention NATIONAL POLICE officers held a talk at the Hospital de la Axarquia on the prevention of aggressions for health professionals from the emergency area. Health care professionals including doctors, nurses, and administrative personnel received first-hand guidelines to follow in case of verbal or physical aggression. A new reporting procedure has been launched in the hospital itself, avoiding the trip to the police station.

The sanity police position has been created in a bid to put a stop to aggressions in medical centres, and guarantee personalised attention to health professionals who are victims of violence or threats. This employee will have continuous meetings with the health care sector to encourage fluid communication and reduce criminal acts in medical centres. It also offers advice to centres and trains health care workers in self-protection measures.

More police A NOTICE has been published in Torrox advertising for seven new members of staff in the Local Police. The positions include several outside hires, as well as internal promotions. It is hoped the move will help to replete the number of police in the town after the number of officers fell by nine in the last decade to 26. In February, five policemen in Torrox reportedly saved the life of a 79-year-old man who tried to jump from a terrace.

The officers from the Local Police said they received a call from family members, who said the man, who reportedly suffers from Alzheimer’s disease, was trying to throw himself from a balcony in the family home. The family are said to have first contacted an off-duty Velez-Malaga police officer who lives nearby, before Torrox officers also intervened. Health improvements by Sally Underwood VELEZ-MALAGA Council is working with groups of experts to improve mental health in the municipality. Mayor Antonio Moreno Ferrer met with the president of the Andalucian Federation of Families and People with Mental Health Problems (FEAFES), as well as the president of the Association of Relatives and Persons with Mental Illness Velez-Malaga.

Among the initiatives discussed was an exhibition created with the Association of Relatives and Persons with Mental Illness of the Costa del Sol, about mental health which will take place in the exhibition hall in the convent of San Francisco next January. Manuel Movilla, president of FEAFES Andalucia, also showed his gratitude for the project launched on October 10 - World Mental Health Day - which saw the town hall and local media work together to show

Luxury shopping WORKS to create motorway access to the new Plaza Mayor luxury outlet will begin in May, i t has been announced. The planned site will involve its developers creating two new lanes on the MA-20 to avoid congestion on the motorway when it opens. Companies McArthur Glen and Sonae Sierra have announced t hey are currently finalising the details of the works to avoid disrupting traffic. One of the condit i ons of t he pl anni ng permission granted to the two companies was the creation of new entrances and exits to the com m er ci al cent r e, which in turn is expected to improve access to the current Plaza Mayor. The new luxury outlet cent r e i s expect ed t o open its doors after the summer. Its developers believe the site could attract around two million visitors in its first year alone.

Payment period down SUPPLIERS in Torre del Mar and Velez-Malaga are now waiting half as long for payment as they were four years ago, according to new figures. A report by Velez-Malaga Council showed the average payment period had reduced to 99.6 days, less than half what it was in 2015. It was also reported in the first quarter of this year that the council have made payments to suppliers worth around €8 million, as well as nearly €4 million paid in other bills since the beginning of the year. The council claims during the current legislature, Mayor Antonio Moreno Ferrer has reduced the municipal debt by 44 per cent, by more than €25.5 million. This takes the financial debt per resident down by almost 50 per cent, from €726 per person in 2015 to €408 now.

Train on track A COALITION of two political parties has promised to help build a coastal train line from Nerja to Cadiz if elected. The Podemos and Izquierda Unida parties have committed to working together to move the project forward after it ‘is still stuck after a century and a half.’ The groups said: “We are talking about isolated populations in terms of railways, in breach of Europe’s mandate to connect the area through train, something that, moreover, allows the Paris agreement on climate change to be met because it is a sustainable and effective means.”

Steal magnolias MORE than 2,000 signatures have been collected opposing plans to remove trees to pedestrianise an area in Velez-Malaga. Backing angry residents is political party, Izquierda Unida (IU) who claim the area’s magnolia trees are ‘compatible’ with the works. Mayor Antonio Moreno Ferrer rejected the objections however. He said: “In no case will [the trees] be felled, but transplanted to another place.” He added: “The design includes palm trees and we will include other elements which help to provide shade in the hottest weather, as is done in many other cities.”

According to new figures, only 17.4 per cent of owners have complied with the new law, leading Local Police to begin handing out fines. Of the estimated 10,565 dogs in the area, only 1,835 are currently on the DNA database, which was launched to cut down on the problem of dog mess.

Put that phone down THE Guardia Civil’s traffic division will be able to examine a driver ’s mobile after a serious road accident. Bartolome Vargas, a public prosecutor attached to the Supreme Court and Spain’s Road Safety coordinator, sent out an order allowing traffic police to scrutinise calls made and received prior to a crash. Studies show that using a mobile while driving increases the accident risk by 20 per cent and this now incurs a € 2 0 0 f i n e , p lu s th e loss of three points from a driving licence. The new ruling does not allow onthe-spot inspections and investigators must seek a court order before asking a phone company to list calls on a driver’s phone at the time of the accident. Nor will all calls automatically imply an offence, as using a Bluetooth system is legal, Vargas conceded. The Guardia Civil also want powers enabling them to pursue drivers with mobile apps that warn of roadblocks or drink and drugs controls. Trafficdeclines considerably minutes after they set up a roadblock due, presumably, to these apps, they believe.

Family’s dream break ruined by builders A FAMILY who splashed out £3,000 on a dream, all-inclusive holiday to Spain has claimed that it was ruined by builders staring at their young girls and noise from cement mixers near the pool. Julie Reeves, 42, and husband, David, travelled with their daughter Jessica and Julie’s niece Ria to Playa Blanca on the island of Lanzarote in the Canaries on April 1. But the family say builders working on construction near the swimming pool spoiled it on the first day and they were forced to spend the remaining days of their week-long break at the beach instead. Julie told Mail Online: “We arrived to a construction site around the pool area with pneumatic drills, cement mixers, electric saws and tile cutters. “Dust was flying over us continually and lecherous workmen were constantly up and down with wheelbarrows.

“The girls didn’t feel comfortable and said the workmen were staring which made me feel sick. “We ended up spending every day at the beach after the first day as it was horrendous. It cost us a fortune.” Julie said they complained to TUI and said they were offered £250 compensation or £350 off a future stay - but dubbed this ‘an insult.’ A TUI spokesman said: “We’re sorry to hear of the Reeves party’s experience in Lanzarote. “We were not made aware of the planned building so were unable to notify the customers before they travelled, which we will be addressing with our hotel partner. “We will also be investigating other concerns the customers have raised. We will be in contact with the customers directly to apologise and offer a gesture of goodwill.”

Train and airport strikes over Easter TRAVEL plans may be hindered as an avalanche of strikes affecting planes and trains could continue for over a fortnight in Spain. The new protests are set to target Adolfo Suarez Madrid-Barajas airport, Air Nostrum and Renfe, along with other companies and infrastructures. Security staff at Barajas announced an indefinite strike last Friday that could continue until the end of the month if an agreement is not reached. Passengers have been advised to arrive at the airport with enough time in advance as queues have been building up at security over the past few days. Other airports will too be affected as ground staff known as ‘handling,’ encompassing around 60,000 workers around the country, are set to be on strike on April 21 and 24. Air Nostrum has cancelled 148 flights so far as a collective pilot strike took place on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday of this week, and are planned for the same days next week (April 22, 23 and 24). Euthanasia case continues A MAN who helped his wife with multiple sclerosis to die earlier this month could go on trial at a gender violence court following a Madrid judge’s ruling last week. Angel Hernandez, 70, turned himself in to Madrid police after helping wife Maria Jose Carrasco, 61, die. Tourism holds BRITAIN and Spain remain popular destinations for travellers from either country despite Brexit, industry data has shown. Spending from British travellers has grown by 5.4 per cent so far this year compared to 2018, according to figures from the Exceltur industry association. Data from the Hosteltur hotel body showed the number of bookings made for Easter week has risen by 12 per cent compared to last April. The Costa Blanca’s HOSBEC industry association’s figures showed the number of reservations made by British holidaymakers in Benidorm grew by 7 per cent year-on-year in the second half of March. “The British are returning positive figures despite uncertainty over Brexit,” the association said. British travellers are still the biggest single nonSpanish group of holidaymakers in Benidorm, the same data showed. They accounted for 42.7 per cent of all overnight stays in the second half of March, HOSBEC said. The figures follow a push from the Costa Blanca tourism industry and authorities to draw British travellers during this spring. HOSBEC said in February the industry believed bookings from British travellers would pick back up once the factors causing Brexit uncertainty were resolved.

Further delay By Joe Gerrard BRITAIN’S prime minister narrowly avoided a no-deal Brexit last week after securing an 11th-hour extension to the withdrawal date, giving her and Westminster until October 31 to pass a deal. Theresa May secured the sixmonth extension after meeting with leaders from the EU27 in Brussels. Together they struck a compromise between May’s request for a short extension and Brussels officials including EU Council President Donald Tusk’s call for a year-long delay. The agreement, dubbed a ‘flextension,’ allows lawmakers in London time to come to a consensus on the terms of Britain’s withdrawal. Britain will be able to leave the EU if a deal is passed before the deadline. But an EU summit will be held in June to monitor Britain’s behaviour after leaders including French president Emmanuel Macron expressed concerns it could undermine EU business going forward. But it is expected the economy will benefit by many million more in the coming years as fans of the series visit the country to view the locations used. The eighth and final blockbuster series was filmed in locations around the world, with Spain once more being fea-

tured heavily including the Sevillian town of Osuna where filming continued for 15 days. Some 650 extras were taken on, with a total of 1,000 people working on the film in that time. This boosted the town’s economy for those days, and now a tourism boom is expected for the usually sleepy municipality. Spain is becoming increas-

ingly attractive for filming thanks to the improved tax and economic advantages offered to production companies. Mainland Spain offers a tax incentive to international filming in the form of a tax rebate of between 15 per cent and 25 per cent (up to €5 million) depending on the autonomous community. Anyone who has lived continuously in the UK between 1980 and 1996 (a minimum of one year) will not be able to donate blood in Spain due to the risk of transmitting mad cow disease. Similarly, there are restrictions if you have received a blood transfer in the UK. However, each region may have different rules about donation. Call the donation helpline on 935 573 500. Alternatively, visit www.donorsang.gencat.cat to find out if you are eligible. If you are eligible, you can give blood at your local hospital, or via the Spanish Red Cross (Cruz Roja) at one of their clinics, or in one of their mobile units. You can check dates and locations by visiting www.donarsangre.org. A donor card is not necessary to give blood. On the first visit you will have to provide DNI, NIE, passport or a driving licence. If you are already registered in the Blood Bank, you only need a donor card or a document with your name and surname. The process of blood donation takes just 10 minutes in which 450 ml are collected (equating to 10 per cent of the total blood circulation of an adult person). Despite huge technological advances, the only way for hospitals to obtain blood is through the generosity of the public. The blood is carefully screened for disease to make sure it is safe. After a tattoo, you must wait four months to be eligible to donate. After surgery, the exclusion period will depend on the type of intervention. After minor surgical procedures, you cannot donate blood for seven days or until you are fully recovered. After undergoing major surgery, you will not be able to donate blood for four months. The rarest blood type is AB, present in 1 per cent of Caucasians, according to research by the America Red Cross. Blood transfusions are carried out daily in Spanish hospitals with more than 6,200 patients being given them, of whom almost a quarter are fighting cancer and a similar figure receiving transfusions during or after surgery. A giant bill By Joe Gerrard GREENPEACE has hung a giant bill on a Madrid skyscraper to raise awareness of what they claimed was the price of political and corporate inaction on climate change. The environmental NGO hung the 300-metre high banner on the side of one of the Colon towers in the Spanish capital on Thursday. Inaction from politicians and corporations has racked up an environmental and social bill which will ultimately have to be paid by the people, Greenpeace said. “They are

costing us our lives, they are costing us the planet. And we are not going to pay the bill,” Greenpeace said. “The bad practices of large companies and current policies not only destroys the environment, but also creates an increasingly unequal society with fewer rights,” the NGO added. Greenpeace’s protest comes as demonstrations against climate change have stepped up in recent months. Spanish school pupils have repeatedly joined hundreds of thousands of others from around the world in striking from lessons every Friday in protest against pollution.

Campaigns kick off By Joe Gerrard THE official window for general election campaigning has now opened, following a lively pre-campaign phase which saw parties set out their stalls to voters. The official period for campaigning began on Friday. Posters have now gone up in towns and cities across the country and party leaders are currently on the trail to galvanise their support bases and win over undecided voters. The talking points have broadly fallen along a left-right divide with some cross over and exchange between the two. All parties have released detailed manifestos featuring policies on education, the economy, healthcare, defence, foreign policy and social issues and others. But a small number of points have made it to the fore. Key talking points for the left have centred around social

VOTE PITCH: Campaigning is now in full swing. and economic policies. Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez said his ruling left-leaning PSOE was the only ‘moderate’ party which voters could elect on Sunday April 28. Sanchez laid out a programme which included raising the minimum wage, helping young people to buy homes, working to end gender violence, tackling rural depopulation and fighting against climate change. The leftist Podemos has emphasised the similar issues. Speaking in Palma in Mallor-

ca, leader Pablo Iglesias focused on working conditions, proposing the curbing of temporary contracts and raising the minimum wage to €1,200. PSOE and Podemos both reportedly have a pact to avoid criticising each other on the campaign trail, likely in preparation for post-election coalition wrangling. Meanwhile on the right, parties have focused on issues including the ongoing independence issue in Cataluña and on further opening the Spanish economy to private business

and financial control. All parties on the right have made cuts to taxes and deregulation a part of the latter issue. The conservative Partido Popular (PP), the centrist Ciudadanos and the far-right Vox have each tried to convince right-wing voters they are best able to deliver their vision for Spain. The PP has made that appeal a central part of its broader electoral strategy. Campaign videos have told voters considering backing Vox that their ballots would be wasted because of the way votes are allocated for the Congress of Deputies, favouring more established groups. Ciudadanos has slightly departed from free market orthodoxy. Leader Albert Rivera has proposed easing pressure on businesses while curbing temporary work contracts and offering more state aid for families.

Profile: Regional parties WITH a general election looming on Sunday April 28, we are profiling each of the political parties vying for victory in the vote. When voters cross their ballots, not only in the general election but also for local, regional and European polls in May, there will be region-specific parties standing. Regional parties vary in ideology, policy platforms and purpose. Cataluña and the Basque Country are both home to nationalist and pro-independence groups, but there are others who stand to campaign on issues which are particular to a given region. Coalicio Compromis stand exclusively in the Valencia Region. They espouse left-wing, environmental and Valencian regional positions including promoting its language and is currently part of the governing coalition in the Corts Valencianes assembly. Mallorca is home to the Mes per Mallorca and the Proposta per les Illes party. The former is on the left while the latter lies in the political centre and both have a handful of seats in the Balearic Islands Assembly. In Andalucia, the far-left Candidatura Unitaria de Tabajoadores (CUT) has one seat in the region’s parliament. Poll tracker: Partido Socialista (PSOE): 28.8 per cent, 126 seats Partido Popular (PP): 20.8 per cent, 82 seats Ciudadanos: 15.6 per cent, 54 seats Unidos Podemos: 13.5 per cent, 36 seats Result: PSOE largest party, no overall control.

Ancient vase exhibit AN exhibit is being held in the Madrid Region showcasing finds on how the 4,000-year-old design of a vase spread across Europe from modern-day Russia to the Iberian Peninsula. Alcala de Henaresâ€™s Regional Archaeological Museum is hosting the Toast to the Prince exhibition. Items from 22 European collections have been loaned to the museum for the exhibit, in materials including clay and gold. The design of the bell-shaped vases spread across Europe between 2,500 and 2,000 BC. They have puzzled historians and archaeologists since their discovery in the 19th century as it is unknown why a uniform design would have spread across the continent at that time. The vessels were used for a variety of purposes including to hold food and drinks and in religious and funerary ceremonies.

Three of the suspected gang members were detained in Valencia following a car chase through the city streets after they had carried out a series of robberies in Xativa. The detentions of the other two members and the businessman receiving the stolen goods followed three days later in Madrid. The Guardia said they believed the gang were responsible for break-ins in Alicante, Valencia, Ciudad Real, Cuenca, Valladolid, Lugo, Madrid and Toledo.

Banks drafted for rail bonds SPAIN’S ADIF railway infrastructure body has called in four leading banks to sell bonds worth at least €500 million to fund the building of new high-speed lines. Spanish banks BBVA and Santander will sell the bonds alongside London-based HSBC and France’s Societe General. The sale is set to be done as ‘green bonds’ which were first offered in 2017 and again last year. IMF Spain deficit forecast SPAIN’S public spending deficit will be 2.3 per cent of Gross Domestic Product (GDP) this year and remain below 3 per cent afterwards, the International Monetary Fund (IMF) has predicted. The IMF forecasted a fall in the difference between the Treasury’s income and outgoings of 0.4 percentage points from 2018 to this year. Spain’s deficit was 2.7 per cent of GDP last year. The deficit will remain slightly below 2.5 per cent of GDP until 2022 when it will rise and reach 2.8 per cent of GDP by 2024, the IMF

The IMF said then that ‘credible’ measures would be needed to bring the deficit down. The international lending body said the forecasts were based in part on predictions that economic growth will slow in Spain and elsewhere in the coming years. Spain’s national debt will fall

gradually in GDP percentage terms from 96 per cent this year to 95 per cent in 2020 and 93 per cent by 2023. The equivalent average figures for the eurozone are expected to be 83.6 per cent this year and 81.8 per cent in 2020. Spain is second to Italy in terms of eurozone countries with the highest national debt as a percentage of GDP. The IMF said it based its forecasts for Spain on budget plans drawn up by the ruling left-leaning Partido Socialista (PSOE) last year and other measures approved since.

SPANISH government ministers have approved funding worth €452 million to support small and medium-sized companies. Industry Minister Reyes Maroto, who announced the measures last week ahead of their approval, said the package would be split into three parts. Almost €96 million will be available for young entrepreneurs, €50 million will go to boosting overseas trade for companies and €307 million will help with energy efficiency. Maroto said: “These measures seek to eliminate obstacles to small business growth and international expansion.”

Number of companies rises A TOTAL of 9,386 companies were created in Spain in February, up 7.4 per cent on the same month in 2018 the latest National Institute for Statistics (INE) figures show. Almost €848 million in capital was invested into the founding of the companies during February, an increase of 86.7 per cent year-on-year. A total of 2,311 companies folded in February this year, ac-

cording to INE data. About 19.4 per cent of new firms were in the trade sector while 15.6 per cent were in the construction industry. A total of 82.5 per cent of companies which folded did so voluntarily, with 6.9 per cent ceasing to exist due to mergers and 10.6 per cent closing for other reasons.

The club aims to help people leave a legacy, whether it be in the business world, charitable causes or even something more personal. What both these events have in common is that they bring together people from all parts of the expat community who want to make a real difference -just like the EWN always has.

ONE beneficiary of Euro Weekly News during its history was Leo Bermejo, who died from a rare form of cancer despite a fundraising effort and campaign on his behalf. Many readers will remember Leo by his nickname Leo the Lion. The boy, from Vera Playa in Almeria Province, was diagnosed with a rare and aggressive form of brain cancer in September 2015. Leo’s family contacted Euro Weekly News in January 2017 when he was aged four shortly after he had several tumours removed. Leo’s mother Karen Keefe said they aimed to raise €176,000 so Leo could travel to the US for pioneering treatment which they hoped would rid him of the illness. Euro Weekly News journalists soon got to work on raising awareness for the four-year-old’s plight. More than €75,000 was raised for Leo in eight days, in part thanks to our publicity and efforts on the ground from Almeria Sales Manager Jackie Butcher. Attention from the public soon followed. Former Real Madrid defender Leo Bermejo, who shared a love of football with the four-year-old as well as a name, retweeted a Euro Weekly News Twitter post calling for help. By May 2017 Leo had flown to the US and completed his proton therapy treatment. He was welcomed back in Almeria on Sunday May 7. But an MRI scan in September of that year showed the tumours were once again growing. An urgent appeal for more support, including for a dedicated private nurse, was made with the help of Euro Weekly News in November. But it was not enough and weeks later, on Friday December 1, Leo passed away days before his fifth birthday. His last words were: “I love you.” Karen told Euro Weekly News after Leo’s passing that she was grateful for the support she had received. She added this newspaper’s publicity had helped to show the true face of cancer in children.

It allows people to see themselves in a mirror-like screen which takes their picture and applies overlays including emojis and frames. Fran told the Euro Weekly News her and business partner Steph were among the first in Spain to get a magic mirror. “It’s great to bring fun and joy to people and to see them enjoying themselves whenever we go to an event with the Magic Mirror,” Fran said. The company offers the service from €375 for two hours and are GPR Protected under European Privacy rules. Costa Blanca Magic Mirror is able to offer bespoke packages to customers depending on the event and their needs, Fran said.

The money raised went to fund training for 100 caseworkers to help the elderly and vulnerable in Spain. Before the party was over, EWN’s Michel and Steven Euesden, were called to the stage to thank them for all they had done to support the Garden Party, and they in turn thanked everyone in the community who had got together to achieve so much to make the night one to remember.

Questionable judgements

LEAPY LEE SAYS IT OTHERS THINK IT ONCE again, it appears strangely coincidental that a subject I chose in a previous column seems to manifest on a wider scale the following week. In the last blurb, I wrote about the pathetic retributions being passed on by our so-called Judges. Well this past week, one of those judgements truly did take the whole tin. It concerned the case of the Turkish born toerag who has apparently been fighting deportation for some five years. This man is a violent criminal, who has never applied for citizenship, and over the years, has been convicted of robbery, criminal damage, burglary, assault and shoplifting. In 2016 a judge decided because he had become the member of a notorious North London gang, he had (wait for it) ‘integrated well, into a part of UK society.’ The judge decided this made him a ‘home-grown criminal’ and allowed him to stay. (I defy anyone to make that one up!). In a series of immigration appeals his blood- sucking lawyers have cost the British taxpayers untold thousands of pounds. And he’s still here - awaiting yet another public purse draining appeal. Sometime I truly do lose the will to live. What with the Brexit fiasco and judgements like this, is it any wonder our once proud British nation has become the laughing stock of the world? If we’d had this lot of ‘do gooders’ and pathetic politi-

LAUGHING STOCK: Pathetic retributions by judges? cians in 1939, the whole population would have been under the jackboot of the Nazis by 1940! Another so-called ‘judgement’ also caught the ol’ boy’s eye this week. A serial drink-driver was ‘given a chance’ by Judge Sarah Buckingham,

even after the accused had crashed into three other vehicles and needed rescuing from her own blazing car. This was her third offence and she admitted to dangerous driving while three times over the limit. It wasn’t even the judge’s almost

unbelievable decision to give her another chance it was actually her reason for doing so. She was deferring sentence for three months, she said, to see if the defendant could address her issues ‘because she was a woman.’ ‘Had Miss Parry been a man,’ the judge added; ‘it would have been straight down the stairs.’ Hold on a minute, is that not a more blatant case of sexism than you would ever be likely to hear? Can you imagine the scream up if she had told a man that if he were a woman, he would have been immediately incarcerated? Loose Women would have had a field day. The roads to Westminster would have been jammed with Boadicea lookalikes and men would be going without their dinner or sexual favours for weeks. As it is I have yet to see one protest from the poor beleaguered males of the populace. Come on fellas you can’t all have become transgenders. TECH FOR THE TIMID IN the beginning was the iPod, and lo, Steve Jobs saw that it was good, and sold over half a billion of the things. Eighteen years on, only the overpriced iPod Touch remains, struggling for sales among myriad Chinese MP3 player clones so cheap they could almost come free with corn flakes. Indeed, a knock-off iPod Shuffle I bought on a street market actually cost less than those corn flakes. The Walkman begat the Discman which begat the MP3 player which begat the smartphone and most music listened to on the move (and increasingly at home) now happens from our phones. Yet surprisingly, there’s still a niche market for higher-quality music players. All you need is good ears to hear the difference; and deep pockets. All but the most dedicated of audiophiles tolerated a huge quality hit when the Walkman turned the music world upside down in 1979. Never mind the (middling) audio quality, enjoy the portability. The 1998 MP3 players continued the trade-off, its compressed music files no match for the fidelity of the CD originals.

HI-RES, HI-PRICE: From €100, to 10 times that. Now audiophiles are fighting back, with growing ranges of dedicated ‘high-resolution music players’ which look like their iPod ancestors, but pack studio-quality circuitry and processing into formats barely larger than a cigarette pack. If you can imagine a cigarette pack costing several hundred euros.

Powered by audio-specific hightech DACs (or Digital-to-Analog Converters) far more advanced than those in a normal player, phone or computer, they will indeed play bog-standard MP3 tracks. But that would be a little like owning a Ferrari and keeping it in first gear. MP3 is a so-called ‘lossy’ music

format; the compression which reduces its file size to make it portable, also strips out lots of the detail, especially the stuff we’re supposed to feel, not hear. High-resolution music players favour ‘lossless’ formats like the ubiquitous FLAC, the old-fashioned WAV, Apple’s ALAC or a compromise which sounds like Austrian royalty: Ogg-Vorbis. People with ‘perfect’ hearing insist they can tell the difference. Most of us closer to our sell-by dates are happy just to load in our music collections on mini-SD cards, secure in the knowledge that what’s being pumped out will be pretty much the best our lugholes can discern. Meanwhile smartphones play music at no extra charge. So do tiny music players costing €20 or €30. Ultimately whether you think it’s worth many times that for a high-resolution device depends either on audiophile snob value, or the genuine sensitivity of your own lords and peers. Which is of course cockney rhyming slang. Have a banana.

Hear the hertz HERTZ isn’t for car hire if you’re an audiophile. The holy grail used to be 20 to 20,000 hertz, a frequency range few humans - bar the very young - can distinguish. High Fidelity was the buzzword in the 1950s with the introduction of LPs, then came CDs in the 1980s. But when cassettes stormed the popular market from the 1960s they ran at a barely a 10th of the speed of studio tape, audio range was abysmal and their hiss would have done a cobra proud. In principle, high-resolution audio can achieve more than double the human hearing range. Easter celebrations MALAGA local, Antonio Banderas, has been pictured walking hand in hand with his model girlfriend through the city’s streets during the Semana Santa celebrations. Banderas, aged 58, and girlfriend Nicole Kimpel, aged 38, looked more in love than ever as they strolled through the streets of Malaga. The Spaniard has returned to his native city for many years to take part in the celebrations as a member of the Virgen de Lagrimas y Favores brotherhood. The Hollywood actor was later photographed taking part in a procession with his brotherhood, wearing traditional robes and ringing a large bell to attract celebrants outside the San Juan Bautista church.

Jordan ‘rejects Spanish proposal’

MODEL Katie Price has revealed she deliberately tricked fans into thinking she had become engaged to her boyfriend following a romantic Spanish holiday. Promoting her new reality television series, My Crazy Life, Price shared a photograph of an enormous diamond ring. Later, a sneak peak of her show saw Katie and 30-year-old boyfriend Kris Boyson sit down for a romantic Valentine’s meal during a holiday in Malaga.

Fans are convinced Kris is about to propose as he presents his girlfriend with a small black box. Visibly shocked, Price looks set to reject the romantic gesture when the box is opened to reveal a key. Kris explains: “It’s a key to the house, so you know, it’s a bit more commitment and you can turn up whenever you want.” Relieved, the model tells cameras: “Thank god it was not a ring! I’m not saying it will not happen one day, but jeez I’m not even divorced yet.”

Taking it slowly HILARIA BALDWIN, the Spanish-born wife of actor Alec Baldwin, has shared her journey with followers after suffering a tragic miscarriage. The Majorcan beauty, aged 35, took to Instagram to share a short video of her carrying out a gentle yoga routine around a week after the traumatic event. Originally from the United Kingdom and living in Frigiliana for six years, the artist and musician says: “My way of painting and song writing are very similar in many aspects. Light and shade with space and detail to bring an emotion to the viewer and listener.” The exhibition entitled Sunday Best is an exploration of colour, harmony and balance in abstract paintings, figurative paintings and portraits. COMPETA’S annual Art Walk is back for its 11th year. Taking place on Saturday, Sunday, Tuesday, and Wednesday, the event will see 38 artists from nine nationalities exhibiting in the mountain village. Also on offer will be workshops as well as the opportunity to see the artists at work at various venues throughout Competa. The displays will include paintings, drawings, textile art, photographic art, video-projections, ceramics, bronze, wood, stone and steel sculptures. Workshops will include a Ceramic Raku workshop by Pepe Galvez on Saturday from 3.30pm to 7.30 pm. Tickets, priced €20, include materials and the workshop can accommodate between five and 12 participants. To book, contact artcompeta@gmail.com. This year, there will be a shuttle bus from Nerja and Torrox to Competa at 10am and 12pm with return at 6pm and 8pm. The trip is €4 each way between Torrox and Competa
