Roaring success THE Lionaid second charity ‘Party in the Park’ was a roaring success, smashing last year’s target. More than €10,000 was taken on the day, and donations are still coming in. The Vera & District Lions Club Sunday event fully lived up to the expectation of a great family day out. Vera’s El Palmeral Park was bustling from the minute the gates opened at 12 midday right through to the last act as the sun went down. Local bands, dance groups and Irish folk groups generously donated their time and provided the live entertainment. One group even travelled all the way from Ireland to take part. The Lion Bar did a brisk trade in food and drinks throughout the day. There were stalls galore, and for children there were bouncy castles, a fairground and entertainers. Many local businesses generously donated great prizes for the tombola. One of the most poignant parts of the day was the raffle held in memory of Leo the Lion, the courageous little boy who died just before his fifth birthday in December 2017 after battling a rare form of brain cancer for much of his short life. A Garrucha interiors business donated €500 worth of items for the Leo Memorial Board prize. The lucky ticketholder, Frank O’Sullivan of the Patrick Pierse Irish band, promptly donated his winnings straight back to the Lions. Just as moving was the moment the

Seeing is believing DRIVERS took a double take on a rainy roundabout in Roquetas de Mar on Friday night. Happily tucking into the roundabout’s lush grass was a fully grown… hippopotamus! After a quick green snack the hefty hippo legged it across a busy road, narrowly avoiding the traffic.
A video posted online of the huge beast near the shopping centre immediately went viral, receiving more than 14,000 views in less than an hour. The hippopotamus had escaped from a circus which had set up nearby, staff retrieving the runaway after the emergency services raised the alarm.

NEWS EXTRA Holiday home thefts GUARDIA CIVIL charged a man with breaking into three properties used as holiday homes and vehicles in rural areas of Nijar to steal items including TVs, mobiles, household goods and toys to sell in North Africa.
Drug arrest GUARDIA CIVIL arrested a 49-year-old man after uncovering an indoor marihuana plantation in a property by a Balanegra school. A joint police search of the property resulted in the seizure of 425 mature marihuana plants.
A bit blowy GUSTS of wind up to 90kms and three-metre waves interrupted ferry services between Morocco and Almeria on Saturday. The unseasonal weather also saw snow fall on the province’s mountain ranges.
LGBT nod THE Colega Almeria Association promoting lesbian, gay, bisexual and transsexual rights has recognised Almeria Council at the 12th edition of its annual awards ceremony for its efforts to promote tolerance, respect and equality for the LGTB community.
Facelift for fortress THE Andalucia regional government is planning a restoration programme for Almeria City’s Alcazaba citadel. ‘The Alcazaba’s time has arrived,’ the Junta de Andalucia Culture and Historic Heritage regional minister Patricia del Pozo announced in response to a question from Almeria deputy Pablo Venzal in the regional parliament last Thursday. The deputy had called on the regional administration to back a strategy to highlight the cultural value of the fortress and its potential in terms of the local economy, arguing its ‘tourism possibilities have not been exploited.’ The regional minister said turning ‘the heritage jewel’ into ‘a major economic and employment engine,’ was a priority for the Junta. Maximum sentence for savage murder THE Almeria Provincial court has condemned a man to ‘reviewable permanent prison’ for sexually assaulting and brutally murdering a woman in Huercal de Almeria in January 2017. This is the first time the sentence, reserved for convictions of terrorism, political assassination, genocide and certain types of murder, has been issued in the province. The court also ruled Francisco Salvador SG should serve a further 15
years behind bars for the sexual attack on the victim before ending her life , a nd orde re d him to pa y €460,000 in c ompe ns a tion to he r family. A popular jury found the defendant guilty of breaking into the home of Antonia GA, with whom he had had a brief relationship, early in the morning armed with a knife, violating her before repeatedly hitting and stabbing her and cutting her throat.

POLICE made two arrests after surprising a man carrying a pistol on an El Ejido street. A patrol approached him and a second individual after noticing them acting suspiciously in Calle Alcazaba. When they got closer to the pair, one of them tried to run off, throwing the Glock 26 semi-automatic onto the floor. When officers caught up with him he tried to fight them off, several times trying to reach for the gun. The second individual told officers he had bought the gun, but police reported he had no arms licence. A subsequent search of his top-of-the-range vehicle led to the discovery of a large machete. Police charged the two men with illegal possession of arms, and resisting arrest.
Hash cover up A MAN with more than 300 pellets of hashish strapped to his legs and torso and hidden under his clothing is under arrest after Guardia Civil stopped him at Almeria Port. The nervous behaviour of 41year-old MK from Alhama de Murcia during a routine check on passengers and vehicles disembarking from a ferry from Nador in Morocco, prompted officers to take him to a separate area to be searched, leading to the discovery of his drug padding.

A 32-YEAR-OLD man is under arrest for touching one woman on the legs and buttocks while she was walking down the street in Roquetas de Mar and for putting his hands on the legs of two other women in a local health centre.
Fire out SOME 20 forest firefighters, backed up by teams from the Turre and Huercal-Overa fire stations, tackled a blaze which broke out in an area of undergrowth in Sopalmo in Mojacar at midday on Saturday. The fire was reported to be completely extinguished by the evening.
Hidden hash POLICE arrested a man in Almeria City after discovering hash plantations hidden in the basement of his family home and a disused underground water cistern. Officers seized 264 marihuana plants and a hunting rifle, also identifying illegal connections to the power supply.

Jagged coast THIS distinctly jagged beach on Spain’s northern coast was recently chosen alongside nine other places in a ranking of the country’s best hidden gems. Sakoneta Beach, in the Basque Country province of Guipuzcoa, made it into El Confidencial’s ‘10 (Almost) Unknown Corners of Spain You Have to Discover’ table. The newspaper said the cove, which lies between the towns of Deba and Zumaia, was ‘small and wild.’ When the tide is low, a series of
jagged rock formations are exposed. They were sculpted by the sea over hundreds of years, creating a geological formation known as flysch. Flysch refers to a process where channels separated by rocky outcrops are formed in alternating layers of hard and soft stone. The process is gradual. Attempted murder charge A 21-YEAR-OLD from HuercalOvera is under arrest for attempted murder after firing shots at a car with two people inside. The bullets hit the window, but no-one was injured. Guardia Civil reported the shooting took place on March 29, prompted by an argument over the quality of cocaine the young man identified as BMG had sold the pair. Investigations revealed he had been involved in a cocaine and mari-
huana sales setup from a property in Huercal-Overa and had an extensive criminal record. A search of the property resulted in the seizure of various quantities of drugs, €4,500 in cash and the gun used to fire at the victims. Officers also charged the 21-year-old with drug trafficking, illegal possession of arms and traffic safety violations, and detained an 18 and a 20-year-old who were inside the property for crimes against public health.

Death under investigation AN elderly woman died after waiting two and a half hours at the Torrecardenas hospital emergencies department without being seen by a doctor, Spanish press reported. According to the Voz de Almeria, the family of 74-year-old DAR maintained she was assessed by nurses at the Almeria City hospital, who classified her condition as a level two priority; level one is where there is a risk of loss of life. She had been taken to the hospi-

Dogs get their day THE focus was firmly on four-legged friends on Sunday with the first Vera Town Dog Fair. Organised by the Council’s Citizen Participation Department and the ACE Spanish Canine Association, the event featured competitions for best dogs and for handlers, presentations on canine care and well-being, obedience and training tests and demonstrations by Vera Local Police Canine Unit dogs. Around 200 dogs took part in the event, which was held in the municipal bullring. Citizen Participation councillor Francisca Garcia said “the fair would serve to raise awareness about the rights and obligations of pet owners.”
A night to remember RAIN and high winds on Saturday forced a change of venue for the Spanish AECC Cancer Association’s movie-themed Message of Hope fundraising show, but the stormy weather didn’t stop the event from being a resounding success. The town museum was packed to capacity for the ‘Music of Cinema and Life gala’ to raise awareness about prostate cancer investigation and prevention, proving to be an ideal substitute for Turre’s main square. The excellent acoustics perfectly showcased the performances. Among them, the Banda Indalia orchestra’s rousing medley of film score greats. AECC Turre branch President Cati Visiedo told the Euro Weekly News, “the whole occasion was simply spectacular” and an “unforgettable night which will stay in my memory.” Staged to feel just like an Oscars night ceremony, wellknown Spanish actors, directors and other professionals from the world of cinema had a lead role as event ambassadors and

Strengthening ties THE University of Almeria and Huercal-Overa Council are strengthening ties. Mayor Domingo Fernandez and UAL Rector Carmelo Rodriguez have signed an agreement under which the local authority’s Enterprise and Business Days, running today (Thursday) and tomorrow, are recognised as an educational activity for which university students can request credits. The rector said the agreement showed the university was in close touch with “the reality of the province” and with the “necessities of a very prosperous area” which is seen represented in a municipality considered the ‘entry gate’ to Andalucia on its eastern side.” Among those participating in this year’s Enterprise and Business Days are the economist Jose Maria Gay de Liebana, fashion designer Agatha Ruiz de la Prada, and actor Jesus Vidal, who won the Best Newcomer award winner at Spain’s equivalent of the Oscars. The event also features a company fair aimed at young people seeking employment or looking to change jobs with presentations by young provincial entrepreneurs, and networking areas. The initiative is sponsored by the Almeria Provincial Council, the Junta de Andalucia and the Chamber of Commerce, among others.
Food fair THE second edition of the Almanzora food fair was even more successful than last year’s, Cuevas del Almanzora Council reported. Some 2,000 people visited the weekend event, between them trying in the region of 5,000 tapas. “We are convinced that this fair, despite being so young, will grow and become established on Almeria’s gastronomic calendar”, commented Mayor Antonio Fernandez Liria.

Never too old! MOJACAR resident Edna Thirlaway proved you’re never too old to have fun, celebrating her 94th birthday on March 31 with a full weekend of parties. The festivities began with a do at Mojacar Council’s free exercise class for senior citizens, which Edna has attended since it began 12 years ago. Not surprisingly she is the most ‘senior’ student. The popular young tutor, David Parra, along with 35 friends, were invited for drinks and cakes in the 3rd Age Bar, where the birthday girl was presented with a magnificent floral arrangement. This was followed the next day w ith a p a rty in th e s u ns hine for friends and family at the home she has shared with her daughter, Jill Bennett and her son-in-law Patrick for the last 15 years. Council support for autism initiative VERA Council is giving its support to the work of a non-profit association providing services and support for children with autism and their families. The local authority has set up a sensory room at the municipal sports centre to be used for treating children affected by autism spectrum and pervasive developmental disorders. Signing the agreement between the council and ASTEA Huercal Overa last week, Vera mayor Felix Lopez said this formalised the collaboration between both entities on the development of the occupational therapy service which the association provides. “The aim is to maximise the individual potential of every child through the use of therapeutic activities promoting children’s interaction with their surrounding environment,” the mayor explained. ASTEA Huercal Overa representative Monica Lopez added, “These aims are achieved through fun, challenging activities to activate the nervous system and assimilate the new sensations they experience.”

Cat control collaboration NIJAR Council has taken steps to control feral cat colonies. The local authority’s Tourism, Heritage and Beaches Department, in collaboration with animal protection societies and volunteers, has carried out the first sterilisations in municipal veterinary clinics. Safe school roads ADRA council’s plan to create safer roads and ease traffic congestion on school routes is moving forward. The €134,000 Safe School Road project has now been put out to tender. The council said the works are scheduled to get started in May. The aim is to encourage people to walk or cycle the

school runs, helping to reduce the numbers of cars on the roads during rush hour. The first phase will focus on the five schools which have the greatest problems in terms of traffic. The Safe School Road initiative is co-financed by Adra Council and the European Regional Development Fund.
Cultural exchange SOME 100 young people from Vera and the University of Almeria Verasmus came together for a cultural exchange at the weekend. Organised by the Vera Council Youth and Tourism departments in collaboration with UAL, the Verasmus initiative was all about providing an enriching experience for all the participants through learning about different cultures and exchanging ideas. The youngsters took part in a series of leisure and educational activities, including visits to Vera’s most important sights, beaches and weekly market, opportunities to try local dishes and roundtable discussions. They also had a chance to learn a few flamenco steps with popular dancer and choreographer Rafael Amargo.

Green light given A NEW industrial estate in Huerca-Overa looks set to go ahead following the Council’s definitive approval of the plans. The new infrastructure in La Morena will cover an area of 182,000sqm in a location with direct access to the Mediterraneo dual-carriageway. This will be the municipality’s second industrial estate. There is already one on the road to Santa Maria de Nieva, with about 50 different businesses. “Having a new industrial estate represents another attraction for companies which can move into the municipality, as well as local businesses”, Mayor Domingo Fernandez commented.

Hazardous waste plot SPANISH police have smashed an organised crime gang who they claim earned up to €1 million by illegally trading 10 tons of ozone-depleting gas. The Guardia Civil discovered a company and an organised crime group involved in the illegal export of 10 tons of the banned R22 refrigerant gas smuggled from the EU. The SEPRONA nature protection branch of the Guardia Civil carried out the investigation supported by Europol and the French Na-
tional Gendarmerie (Gendarmerie Nationale). Europol said 10 people were involved in illegal earth-destroying activities. The investigation revealed a company in Valencia, Spain, was involved in smuggling the R-22 refrigerant gas without a legal licence, earning between €500,000 to €1 million in profit for the criminal gang. Police launched their investigations in 2017 when the Spanish Ministry of Environment was informed of R-22 gas allegedly being ex-

ported to Panama illegally. The operation found that the company repackaged R-22 refrigerant liquids which should have been sorted as hazardous waste. This led to around 10,000 kg of R-22 gas being traded illegally as regenerated gas. The investigation revealed these10 tons of illegally exported gas would have released 17,000 tons of CO2 into the atmosphere. The investigation started as part of Project TECUM, which focuses on the (transnational) organised
crime dimension of environmental crimes. Since 2010, the use and introduction of ozone-depleting gases onto the market has been banned in the EU.

A COURT in Colombia has ruled that treasure worth at least €1 billion on the wreck of a Spanish galleon sunk in the Caribbean should be salvaged. The Barranquilla court’s ruling came after a US company which claims around 50 per cent of the treasure on the San Jose which sunk in 1708. It overturned a previous decision to put the salvaging on hold as Colombia and Spain continue to dispute who has the right to raise the wreck. Spain had attempted to delay the salvaging of the wreck and praised a decision last month from the Colombian government to do so. Barranquilla’s Superior

Court overturned a previous ruling in October 2017 which stopped the US company Sea Search Armada from salvaging the wreck. The ruling follows a longrunning dispute between Colombia and Spain which dates back to the wreck’s discovery by the former ’s navy in 2015. Colombia claims they have the right to salvage the San Jose, which lies off Cartagena de Indies, due to it being in their waters. Spain claims the ship sunk during a battle with the British -is an underwater tomb, meaning it cannot be salvaged for commercial reasons under international law.

CRUISE CONTROL: Spain received a record high number of cruise passengers.
Cruising for success SPAIN is Europe’s second most popular destination for cruise passengers, according to new figures. The statistics, released by Puertos del Estado, showed around three million cruise
trips started and ended in Spain last year. The boost saw Spain become Europe’s most popular destination, second only to Italy, which launched 3.7 million cruise passengers. Spain
beat Germany, which had 2.9 million, and the United Kingdom, at 1.9 million. In total, Spain received more than 10.1 million cruise passengers in 2018, a record high for the country.
Carry on about carry-on fee CONVICTED Irish criminal John Gilligan complained bitterly at Alicante airport when he was obliged to pay a €25 carry-on fee. A witness told the Irish media that Gilligan was “less than pleased” after staff at the Ryanair check-in desk noticed that his bag was too large for free hand luggage. Gilligan was very put out but paid up, one onlooker said. “He basically went off on one then, saying it was a scandal
and a sham and - whatever that had to do with it - that Ireland was the most corrupt country on Earth. “But obviously the staff were Spani sh and hi s nam e m eant not hi ng t o them.” Gilligan was released from prison in 2013 after serving 17 years of a 20-year sentence for trafficking cannabis resin. He is currently bailed after trying to take a suitcase containing €23,000 on a flight from Belfast to Spain.
Sixth of Spanish have a foreign parent ONE in every six Spanish citizens was born to either a foreign mother or father, according to data from the National Institute of Statistics (INE). The INE’s Continuous Household Survey showed around 16.9 per cent of Span-
ish citizens had at least one parent born outside of Spain, or more than 7.8 million people. The amount has risen from almost 7.3 million in 2013, when the proportion stood at more than 15.7 per cent.
Celia Marcen, Professor of Sociology at Zaragoza’s San Jorge University, said the figures showed cultural and national identities were becoming blurred for more Spanish people. “It is increasingly difficult to define what it means to be Spanish, or Aragonese, or any other identity, which is a global phenomenon,” Marcen said. INE data also showed the population of Spanish citizens born to at least one foreign parent has grown by almost 10.8 per cent since 2013. The population growth of the whole of Spain during the same period was 0.2 per cent.

THE University of Barcelona has submitted the highest number of patent applications to European authorities out of any in Spain in 2018, according to a new report. The European Patent Office’s (EPO) Annual Report for this year also showed Spanish companies and inventors submitted 1,776 applications last year, a record high. The amount went up by 6.3 per cent compared to 2017.

Gibraltar ‘colony’ row SPAIN has welcomed the European Parliament’s passing of measures which referred to Gibraltar as a ‘colony,’ a great step forward as disputes between London and Madrid over the territory continue. The measures passed by MEPS, which cover post-Brexit travel visa arrangements for British citizens, referred to the enclave off Southern Spain as a ‘colony of the British crown.’ It also referred to Gibraltar
being included on a UN list of nonself governing territories. A Spanish government spokesperson said it would help Spain’s claims over the territory which was ceded to Britain in 1713 under the Treaty of Utrecht. “It is the first time the European Parliament and member states have recognised that Gibraltar is a colony,” the spokesperson said. A spokesperson for British prime
minister Theresa May previously said it was ‘completely inappropriate’ to refer to Gibraltar as a colony. Gibraltar Chief Minister Fabian Picardo said the document’s use of the term colony was ‘disgraceful.’ Gibraltar authorities said in a statement: “It is obvious that extreme pressure exerted by Spain and the bullying tactics of Spanish MEPs on purely nationalistic grounds has led to the acceptance of the reference.”
Favourite destinations ANDALUCIA was the most popular region for Spanish travellers in 2018, according to National Institute of Statistics (INE) figures. INE data showed 16.6 per cent of Spanish tourists holidaying in the country opted to stay in Andalucia. Cataluña was the next most popular with 12.8 per cent, followed by the Valencia Region with 9.9 per cent. The Balearic Islands, Navarra and La Rioja were the least popular with 1.8 per cent, 1.3 per cent and 0.8 per cent respectively. Travellers to the Balearic Islands spent €75 a day on average, the highest of any region.

Ice cream allergy warning A WARNING has gone out to people allergic to dairy or egg products, that an ice cream manufacturer has produced four sorbets and ice creams which fail to mention that they contain the products. The Spanish Agency for Consumption, Food Safety and Nutrition (AECSAN) reported that the milk and egg white proteins were not included on the labels, and so could be a danger to those with allergies. It stressed, however that the products from Catalan-based frozen food company La Sirena are perfectly safe for most people. The affected products are La Siena’s copa de sorbete de limon (milk protein), copa de vainilla de chocolate (egg white), tarrina pannacota frambuesa premium (egg white) and sorbete de horchata (milk protein). Official advice for people with dairy or egg allergies is to dispose of the products. The issue came to light when La Sirena itself spotted the problem and notified the relevant authorities. Netflix praises Spain THE head of Netflix has praised the film and television talent being cultivated in Spain as the company opened its first European production headquarters in the Madrid region. Company CEO Reed Hastings said Spain showed that not all interesting films and television series were made in Hollywood. The firm’s Casa Netflix is the first headquarters the company has set up in Europe. Hastings said Netflix’s audience wanted to see more Spanish-made content. “We have discovered a great need throughout the world for interesting stories. Stories are well-made in Spain,” Hastings said.

‘Illegal’ mine A BUSINESSMAN who allegedly ran an illegal open-cast coal mine in a UNESCO designated ‘biosphere’ in an area home to brown bears and other endangered species, could face an eight years and three months jail term. That is the sentence being demanded by the prosecutor for Victorino Alonso, who denies
running an illegal mining operation in the heart of the ‘Alto Sil’ Natural Area. It was located in the Valle de Laciana (Leon), declared a Biosphere Reserve by UNESCO in 2004. Alonso and co-defendant Jose Tascon, who protest their innocence, are accused of a crime against natural resources and the environment.
A SPANISH soldier is recovering in hospital in the Seychelles from a cut arm after falling down a ladder while on an anti-piracy operation in the Indian Ocean. Spain’s Defence Secretary Margarita Robles said the soldier was involved in a ‘small accident’ aboard the Navarra warship on Saturday. It was a work-related injury which could have happened ‘anywhere,’ Robles added. The soldier is said to be well. The accident comes as around 150 Spanish troops remain deployed off the coast of Africa as part of Operation Atalanta, an EU-wide anti-piracy mission.

Foreign minister Josep Borell, who was in Washington during NATO’s 70th anniversary, said Spain would react with ‘personal sanctions.’ “We have said in every possible way that Madura and his government should respect the physical integrity and political capacity of Sr Guaido,” Borrell added. Juan Guaido, who opposes Maduro’s regime, is the elected president of Venezuela’s National As-
sembly, and recognised as acting president by 54 governments. Borrell also cited Venezuela’s economic crisis and the waves of people entering Colombia in search of food and medicines. It was a dramatic situation which continued to worsen, said Borrell, who also referred to problems with the electricity supply which affected access to drinking water. “Rebuilding the Venezuelan economy will be a difficult task,” he warned.
What to do in the event of an emergency in Spain LIVING in Spain can bring with it an array of issues which may not have been encountered when living in the UK. There are lots of things to consider, and we are here to help try to make the transition and life in Spain a little easier by compiling a series of helpful facts and figures relating to a variety of topics. HERE in Spain there is a general number for all emergencies, 112. No area code is needed and the number can be called from any phone, including mobiles without a Spanish SIM card. The responders speak a number of languages, and you can also fax or SMS 112. In addition, there are individual emergency numbers, depending on the type of assistance you need. It’s a good idea to keep a printout of them handy, in your bag or wallet, in the home and in the car. And it can’t hurt to have a few helpful Spanish medical/emergency terms written down, just in case you don’t get an English-speaking member of staff. National Police, also known as National Police Corps (Cuerpo Nacional de Policia, CNP), deals with criminal offences and public order in towns and cities, and can be contacted by calling 091 or 902 102 112. The latter was set up for non-Spanish to report burglaries, car theft or a break-in when documents and belongings are lost or stolen. Available in English from 9am to 2pm, all week long, the service is also available in French, German and Italian. Once the telephone report is made,
claimants have 48 hours to check and sign their statement at the police station of their choice. In the case of robbery, where threat or force has been used, victims should call 091 at the time, then go directly to a police station to make a report. The Guardia Civil is a military force which operates mostly in rural areas and is responsible for drug offences, fatal car accidents, robberies and murders, and can be contacted on 062. Local Police (Policia municipal) cover their local town or city area for traffic offences and control, lost property and crimes such as theft and neighbourhood disputes. You can reach them on 092. And a special helpine, 016, has been set up specifically to report instances of gender violence. MERCADONA is extending agreements with its suppliers in Cataluña. Until 2017 the Valenciabased supermarket chain had 15 Catalan suppliers, some on exclusive contracts. This network has been extended and the chain now maintains a commercial relationship with 126 suppliers as well as more than 1,800 small and medium-sized businesses. Some of the 126 suppliers were already selling part of their production to the chain, but in line with Juan Roig’s new policies they will gradually increase in importance and sales. Last year Mercadona’s transactions in Cataluña totalled €3.779 billion, 4 per cent more than in 2017, and created 230 new jobs.

Winter Wonderland AMAZING videos and photographs of snowfall in the south of Spain at the weekend have gone viral, with images showing vehicles buried under feet of snow and roads cut off. Although you would expect a good covering of the white stuff on the slopes of the Sierra Nevada near Granada in Andalucia in the winter, it’s pretty unusual in the month
of April. The freezing, wintery conditions in the ski resort were captured by the Ski and Do ski and snowboard school in Monachil, as much of the rest of the country shivered too. On Friday the freak weather caused a massive multi-vehicle smash near Spain’s capital Madrid which left more than 40 people injured.

Spain reopens consulate SPAIN is to reopen its Manchester consulate as it seeks to help its citizens in the UK cope with Brexit. The consulate was closed at the height of the financial crisis in 2011 as the Spanish government sought to cut costs. But now Spain feels the need to reopen it as Brexit looms, which may cause potential problems for the 150,000 Spaniards who live in the UK. Spain also has consulates in London and Edinburgh. An opening date for the consulate was not given.

World Heritage bid SPAIN has put forward Galicia’s Ribeira Sacra valley as its candidate for UNESCO World Heritage status in the current round of applications. The Ministry of Culture’s Council of Historical Heritage unanimously chose the valley, on the border of Galicia’s Lugo and Orense provinces, as Spain’s candidate for the status. It will be made a World Heritage Site in 2021 if UNESCO approves the bid. Ramon Fernandez-Baca, a senior government heritage official, said the Ribeira Sacra was of great cultural value to Spain. “It is a place of spirituality in the valleys of the Sil and Miño rivers,” Fernandez-Baca said. Female unemployment SPAIN has the second highest number of unemployed women of any country in the EU, according to new research. The Institute of Economic Studies found the unemployment rate among Spanish women is 17 per cent. The
EU average is 7.1 per cent. Greece has the highest level of female unemployment in the EU at 24.2 per cent. Italy came after Spain with 11.8 per cent of women out of work, according to the institute.

Ancient burial painting RESEARCHERS from two Spanish universities working in Andalucia have confirmed that a prehistoric burial site was painted and decorated like others elsewhere in the ancient world. Academics and archaeologists from the National Distance Learning University (UNED) and Madrid’s Alcala de Henares University (UAH) were working at the Dolmen de Soto site in Huelva Province. Their investigations with infrared microscopes found the burial site, built some-
time between 3,000 and 2,500 BC in the Neolithic Era, was originally elaborately painted. The researchers are using the Dolmen de Soto as evidence for their theory that more European burial sites were decorated than previously thought. Primitiva Bueno, Professor of Prehistory at UAH and co-director of the research team, said the work at the site came as part of projects being done across Europe. “We have been the first to show that the dolmens of Brittany were also painted,” Bueno said. The paintwork is believed to have consisted of red and black lines with a white

Afghan exit call SPAIN’S foreign minister is set to call on NATO to begin an ‘orderly’ withdrawal from Afghanistan after more than 17 years of conflict. Josep Borrell said Madrid would call for an exit from Afghanistan to make its efforts worthwhile. It comes as 102 Spanish soldiers have been killed so far in the conflict.
“Spain wants an orderly withdrawal which makes all the effort that has been put into the conflict and all the lives which have been lost, not useless,” Borrell said. “The war in Afghanistan is part of the global fight against terrorism and you know that we have been present there for a long time and we have suffered
a lot of casualties,” the foreign minister added. There are currently 8,000 NATO soldiers in Afghanistan and 14,000 US troops. The conflict, which began in 2001, has left at least 211,000 people dead including more than 38,000 civilians, according to estimates based on official figures.

Minute’s silence FOLLOWING the murder of a 26year-old woman by her partner, various cities in the Valencia community held a minute’s silence both in her memory and as a show of feeling against domestic violence. The body of the woman was found on Sunday buried and with signs of violence in a clearing of Ulldecona (Tarragona), following reports of her disappearance from an area of Vinaros, in the north of the province sometime earlier. Her boyfriend was arrested for murder and he reportedly confessed to this crime. Rosa Perris, a leading Valencian politician said: "We have to tell them that there is a way out and this society must place at the heart of political action the struggle against sexist violence." There have been 16 women killed in Spain as a result of domestic violence this year alone.

Tickled pink PASSENGERS on an easyJet to flight to Spain received an unusual welcome when their plane touched down on the tarmac. The plane was taxiing to its gate at the busy Palma de Mallorca airport when ground staff alerted the flight crew to the presence of a flamingo on the ground. The bird was filmed strolling just feet in front of the aircraft and, seemingly, oblivious to the huge, winged object trailing behind it. POLICE in Axarquia have arrested seven people accused of stealing almost 30,000 kilos of avocados in Velez-Malaga. The suspects, aged between 19 and 30 years old are said to have carried out thefts across a dozen farmhouses and farms. According to the National Police, the group stole around 27,800 kilos of avocados, mainly in the El Trapiche area,and causing more than €60,000 of damage. Officers began investigating following complaints of a spate of night-time avocado and mango thefts. After increasing surveillance, officers reportedly identified several members of the group. The National Police claimed the thieves access the farms by cutting fences surrounding farms before driving a vehicle in to collect fruit and help them make a quick getaway if discovered. The group were said to have sold the avocados and mangoes in fruit shops. According to police the gang also paid several people between €50 and €200 to use their identity documents to sell the crops.

Vodafone TV package plan BRITISH-BASED telecommunications firm Vodafone is planning to slash prices for its TV package offering in Spain, to compete with Spanish rival Telefonica. The company has announced plans to abandon the existing model of offering large packages. It is now set to offer customers more options on which channels they get, as well as cutting sale prices. Vodafone’s television director Ignacio Garcia Legaz said the company was also working to offer streaming services such as Netflix and Amazon Prime as part of new packages.

PM praises tourism sector SPAIN’S prime minister has said the tourism industry helps to break down barriers between the country and others and offers ‘enormous opportunities’ to revitalise depopulated areas. Pedro Sanchez said Spain could look forward to returns from the €3 billion invested by companies in the country’s tourism industry. He was speaking at the 19th annual World Travel and Tourism Council in Sevilla City. Sanchez said tourism offered Spain and interior areas experiencing falls in population particularly, the chance to experience a new lease of economic life.

“All records for tourism in Spain were broken in 2018. Spain is an amazing country, home to authentic treasures which deserve to be discovered,” the prime minister said. Spain was now looking to expand its tourism offering beyond traditional ‘sun and beach’ holidays by opening up the interior to cultural and food and drink travellers, Sanchez added. Sanchez called on the sector to be sustainable, saying it was the only way to be efficient. The prime minister added the success of tourism was tied
up with a well-funded state which could support the industry. New technology such as artificial intelligence would be a ‘great ally’ to tourism and the sector’s growth will help to tackle economic issues including inequality, Sanchez said. “Tourism is a symptom of progress and a way of understanding the world. Travelling creates open, tolerant and diverse societies which have mutual respect for each other. “Now more than ever we need to expand our horizons and not build walls but create new frontiers,” the prime minister said.
PP’s economic plans set out THE opposition conservative Partido Popular (PP) has said it will make hiring easier for companies if it wins this month’s general election. The party is campaigning to deliver a ‘fiscal revolution’ which would see corporation tax cut to under 20 per cent for all firms. The PP has also vowed to streamline regulations by creating an ‘administrative highway’ fast-track system. PP economy spokesperson Daniel Lacalle said the party would also help small and medium-sized companies cope with the recent hike in the minimum wage to €900.

Advice for income tax returns FINANCIAL experts from a Catalan university have offered taxpayers tips on how to fill out tax returns after submissions opened last week. Specialists from the Open University of Cataluña (OUC) said taxpayers should submit their returns as far ahead of the Monday July 1 deadline as possible in case problems arise. Property values should be checked against those listed on registries and should
be aware of new deductions and allowances including one for maternity which has risen to €1,200, they added. Entrepreneurs who have created new companies should also be aware they can make deductions of 30 per cent, a maximum of €60,000, the experts said. The OUC specialists said taxpayers should double check arrangements in their regions as rules can vary.
Firm plots expansion FOOD delivery company Deliveroo has drawn up plans to expand its Spanish operations from 30 cities to 60, with country director Gustvo Garcia Brusilovsky saying the firm would become more efficient as it grows and gathers more customer data.
Bank rule BANKS and other financial companies will have to send details about their payment accounts to Spain’s central bank every June under new rules which came into force on Friday, governor Pablo Hernandez de Cos has announced.

Eurozone growth SPAIN has bucked a eurozone trend of slowing economic growth with the fastest rate of expansion in 10 months, according to data from the Purchasing Managers’ Index (PMI). Index figures, from the IHS Markit analysis firm, showed orders in the services sector drove growth in Spain. A slowdown in manufacturing sector orders created a drag on overall eurozone growth, data showed. IHS Markit said in a statement: ‘The strong conditions of Spanish demand helped push up new orders while another notable increase in employment helped strengthen capacity and allowed companies to catch up.’ The Spanish Commercial Activity Index, which measures the performance of the service sector, roses from 54.5 points in February to 56.8 points last month. Any figure above 50 indicates growth. The eurozone’s PMI index stood at 51.6 points in March, down from 51.9 points in February. The PMI Index assesses growth based on new orders, inventory levels, production, supplier deliveries and employment.

Fashion innovation ZARA, Mango and El Corte Ingles are the three Spanish fashion brands most valued by small and medium-sized companies in terms of technological innovation, according to an industry study. Adgoclick’s report found clothing chain Zara led the ranking. Its innovation unit, headed by Alejandro Ferrer and David Alayon, has created systems capable of detecting customer preferences while they are in store, by using location data and other information. The report placed fashion brand Mango in second place as the firm announced plans to open a digital innovation centre in Barcelona. The plans are reportedly designed to boost the company’s commitment to its digital offering. Mango’s online services accounts for more than 15 per cent of company turnover and the firm is aiming to boost that to 20 per cent by the end of 2019. El Corte Ingles, which came third, was found to have developed a strong digital strategy. The company recently announced a two-pronged approach to improving customer experience both on and offline.

Stock market index rise THE value of shares traded under the IBEX 35 index on the Spanish stock exchange stood at 9,503, an increase of 0.16 per cent during a half day last week to levels not seen since September 2018.
Dia offer LUXEMBOURG-BASED investment company Letterone has said it will not improve on its 67 cents a share buyout offer for Spanish supermarket chain Dia as talks for a capital injection of €500 million for the struggling firm continue. VALUED: Zara topped the ranking of Spanish brands. El Corte Ingles has signed a deal with Chinese e-commerce company Alibaba to boost its digital offering. It also now offers a home delivery service to customers across Europe, with buyers getting items delivered in three days or less. Offline, the company has signed
deals with a number of other firms to offer experiences in store and make visits more about shopping. La Liga is among those who have signed up. Adgoclick’s top 10 ranking also featured Pull & Bear in fourth place, Uterque in eighth and Massimo Dutti in 10th.
Rent debts THE amount of unpaid rent in Spain grew by 5.7 per cent last year, according to a housing industry study which also showed the average outstanding payment was €6,000 and the average time without payments was eight months.

LEAPY LEE SAYS IT OTHERS THINK IT WHAT must it be like to be a dedicated police officer who, through hard work, dedication (and probably a mountain of paperwork), finally manages to get a perpetrator into court, only to see them walk away free, because some bewigged berk decides that he or she deserves some form of leniency! These High Court clowns are often so unbelievably out of touch and pompous they are probably more familiar with ‘passing the port’ than passing appropriate sentences. Their naive lack of judgements must also, I’m sure, profoundly dampen any enthusiasm or confidence the officers involved have for the legal system which they are expected to support and act for. They must often feel like technicians who’ve created an intricate piece of valuable machinery, only to see their employers stick it on Ebay at a knockdown price. How can this incompetent bunch consider themselves impartial purveyors of British justice, when every week up pops yet another example of their utter inadequacy in matters of criminal retribution? Just last week there was yet another glaring example of their judicial incompetence. It concerned a burglar with a long record of offences who had broken into the home of a pregnant woman while her husband was out at work. Petrified, the poor woman was hiding in the bath-

JUDGES DECISIONS: Do we need a review to allow proper sentencing? room when the husband came home unexpectantly and confronted the intruder. As he grappled with him, the young thug called to his mate outside that he was caught. “Stab the f****” screamed his mate. “Just stab him and get out of there.” With this threat of serious injury highly possi-
ble, the husband let the man go and he escaped with an Armani watch, cash and gift cards. The victim’s poor wife subsequently suffered a miscarriage which was later directly attributed to the traumatic experience of the raid. Due to dedicated police efforts, the perpetrator was caught and finally brought to court where he
admitted the crime, and also owned up to a later offence where he had threatened another victim with a hammer in the process of a further robbery, whilst on bail. Obviously this man was a hardened criminal and should have been sent down for a considerable length of time? Wrong! Judge Sylvia Carter was swayed by his defence lawyer and decided that he had been ‘Egged on by his mates!’ She sentenced him to 12 months community service and he walked free from the court. I mean, just how naive can you get? This lowlife was probably out plundering some other poor victim’s house the same night. If I were the police I’d be spitting nails at this result of my endeavours, and at the very least, it would sorely discourage me from putting my best efforts into any subsequent investigations. It’s a review of our non-sackable Judges which we need. Perhaps if we see some proper sentencing from these privileged pillocks it would encourage more people to join the force and hopefully raise the morale of those already serving. CONGRATULATIONS: EWN Operations’ Director Nicki Burgess marks a decade with the group.
EWN’S Operations’ Director, Nicki Burgess, has celebrated 10 years at the company at a surprise party organised by her colleagues. Walking into the office to shouts of, ‘happy anniversary,’ as well as confetti, pompoms, and applause, Nicki was noticeably moved by the outpouring of warmth from her team. The EWN family celebrated in style, presenting Nicki with a bouquet of balloons, personalised cake, flowers, cards, and multiple gifts. The group were also joined by Nicki’s son, Jamie, and her father, John. Nicki Burgess has been working for the Euro Weekly News since 2009, following

The fact that we’re congratulating Nicki Burgess on her 10 years with the Euro Weekly News says quite a lot. Her role as Operations Director for the newspaper is one of the most demanding as the newspaper gains more prominence and influence in the media. ONE of the arguments for leaving the EU was so that the British government could manage its own affairs rather than be subject to the laws of Brussels or Strasbourg. Instead, the present impasse shows the British government is incapable of running a corner store let alone look after the interests of the nation or its people. Pillar to post YOU would think in today’s modern era of computers it would be relatively simple to replace a stolen residency card. My wife’s handbag was stolen in Barcelona railway station in January. We went to a police station and got the necessary paperwork. On returning home to Calpe, where we have been tax paying residents since 2006, we made an appointment and four months later went to Benidorm to replace the card. But we were not told they wanted €12. Or that we needed to rearrange our appointment. On returning the wait was two hours. We were then told the police report did not state the items that were stolen. So now my wife has to prove she lives here. If only they looked at their records, but that would be too easy I suppose. Padron expiry WRITING this, I have no idea what tomorrow will bring regarding Brexit and unfortunately I think the same can be said for the British government. Precisely because of this I need everything in order and having moved last year I wanted my new address on the piece of paper saying I’m a permanent resident. As I live in an inland backwater I had to go the Oficina de Extranjeria in Valencia City. Once there I was told my Padron certificate had expired. I obtained another, went back to Valencia and I’m now registered under my new address. But I thought I’d warn readers that they are on the Padron for as long as they want, but the piece of paper that proves it expires three months after it is issued. Helen Lambeth
Tragic time I WAS deeply saddened to read on the Euro Weekly News website about the young girl who died while riding in a tractor with an adult on a farm in Cantabria. We hear so much about ‘health and safety gone mad’ but incidents like this are a reminder that tragic accidents can take place so quickly, however. I hope the adult who was seriously injured recovers soon and my heart goes out to the family who have lost their child. Gill Ball

LATE WINTER: Snow blanketed parts of Andalucia at the weekend.
Dusting of snow I SAW the images of snowy conditions across Andalucia on the Euro Weekly News online. Despite having lived here for over 10 years, I never cease to be amazed at how quickly the weather in Spain can change. Just two weeks ago my family were over from the UK for a short holiday and we were able to spend a day at the beach. It was so hot we even had to leave early! Now, it is like living in another country altogether, and I am sure next week we will be back to tropical sun again. Roger Hendrix

MADRID has hailed the reference to Gibraltar as a ‘colony’ in EU Brexit documents as a diplomatic victory, but pursuing such grievances now hardly helps Spain in the long run. Madrid said it was the first time the EU had used the term. It follows decades of dispute between Spain and Britain over who has the right to run the Rock. Regardless of how legitimate Madrid’s Gibraltar claims are, now is not the time to bring them up. Spain has willingly used ongoing wrangling over Brexit to try and get concessions on Gibraltar and remind the world of its territorial claims. Brexit is a high-stakes game. Not only for London and Brussels but also for countries like Spain which benefit from tourism and trade with Britain. Spain’s work to avoid a no-deal Brexit and their efforts to guarantee arrangements for expatriates and holidaymakers regardless of the outcome is of course welcome. But their consistent push for concessions on Gibraltar days before Britain faces leaving demonstrates a need to reassess their priorities. Brexit negotiations were always going to open a Pandora’s Box of claims that other member states had previously bottled up. Spain has already been granted concessions on Gibraltar on taxes and the right to conduct future talks on the territory solely with Britain. But after more than two years since negotiations began, the time has come to stop indulging in nationalistic grievances and get back helping prevent Brexit ending disastrously.

Not so in Spain. It appears some countries in the EU, France for one, has never learned from its past. So instead of trying to enforce their ideals on citizens it should look, listen and be one with its citizens, Catalan has every right to vote on independence. That is what democracy is about. It just a shame that governments don’t know the real meaning of democracy but its people do. James

TECH FOR THE TIMID THE first thing we used to reach for in the morning was a cigarette. Now, it’s a phone. And you know you’re in trouble when your first priority is your screen, not your partner. Guilty as charged, m’lud. Well, almost. Priorities needed shuffling when I found myself checking e-mails before the kettle, scrolling headlines while scrabbling for slippers, and consulting the weather on my phone instead of through the window. More than a decade into the smartphone era, the inevitable backlash has begun, as increasing numbers report trying to wean themselves off the things. Divorce is in the air; from our devices. A British journalist realised he was hooked when he used an app to track his phone use. Its findings: he picked up his phone a thousand times a week, about 150 times a day. He spent 45 minutes of his first hour jabbing at the screen, received 300 notifications a week, and realised the true extent of his addiction when he kept hearing the phone buzzing even when it wasn’t. Sound familiar? If so, maybe it’s time for a detox. Step one is to find out just

turkey. Among their recommendations: • Delete all social media apps from your phone. Go on, you can do it. Only check them from your computer. • Turn off all notifications; set a timer to check your e-mail manually every hour. • Leave your phone in your pocket or bag when interacting with actual people. • Keep your phone out of sight when commuting. • Don’t take the phone with you into the bathroom or toilet. Well, it’s a start. Get past these and you’re ready for the true tests of phonelesshood: leave your phone outside your bedroom at night, put the phone in one place when at home instead of carrying it around, block work e-mail from your phone after-hours, and go out to dinner without your phone. If you get that far (go on, I dare you), you’re ready for the two final, ultimate challenges: Keep your phone on flight mode all day, only deactivating it when you really need it. Keep it switched off from Friday night to Monday morning. Frankly, I suspect alcoholism might be easier.

The benefits of boredom CONSPIRACY theorists absolutely love the notion that our bodies are being radiated by our phones, but the authorities won’t tell us. It might certainly help today’s phone addicts if they thought it was true. ‘Twitchy hand syndrome,’ is now a recognised affliction for those wanting to check their devices but unable to (most typically in meetings). A friend recently decided to deprive herself of an hour’s sleep in the mornings so she could check her social media in bed. Researchers warn of whole generations now unable to cope with boredom, that languorous state which so often leads to much of the world’s creativity. So when was the last time you just stared into space or sat admiring the world; on the horizon, not on your phone?

Mackerel Masala WHILST I am waiting for my new batch of preserved lemons to be ready to use in Moroccan dishes, which I will share over the next couple of weeks, it got my taste buds going just thinking about all the lovely spices I will be using! We also enjoy Indian food here at Olive Tree Farm and this week’s recipe is a traditional Indian dish which works really well with the strong flavours of mackerel. You can of course fillet the fish and remove all the
bones, but I do it the traditional way by removing the heads after gutting them and then cutting each fish into thick steaks. The sauce is a lovely mix of spices and has a sweetness to it which works beautifully. Although the recipe calls for fresh skinned tomatoes, I didn’t have any to hand and used a 400g can of chopped tomatoes, which I drained off quickly before adding to the pan. It is simple dish to prepare and takes around 30 minutes from start to finish.
Ingredients 2 mackerel (one per person) cut into 2-2.5cm thick steaks ½ teaspoon ground turmeric 2 tablespoons olive oil 1 large onion finely chopped 4 tomatoes (skinned and chopped), I use tinned tomatoes 1 tablespoon tomato puree (ketchup works as well) A couple of fresh sprigs of coriander for garnish For the Masala paste 2 teaspoons ground coriander ½ teaspoon ground turmeric 1 teaspoon hot chilli powder ½ cinnamon stick The seeds from 3 green cardamom pods 3 whole cloves 1 bay leaf 2cm piece of fresh ginger chopped 3 garlic cloves chopped 2 onions chopped (I used one red and one white) 2 tablespoons malt vinegar 2 tablespoons granulated sugar Method After cutting the fish into steaks sprinkle with the turmeric rubbing it into the fish and set aside. Take all the ingredients for the Masala paste, add to a food processor and whizz up. You end up with a lovely gold coloured paste. Set aside. Add the olive oil to a frying pan along with the chopped onions and a little salt and black pepper and sauté gently for about six to eight minutes. Add your Masala paste to your pan and mix through, leave it to gently simmer for a couple of minutes. Add your tomatoes and tomato puree, stir though and then place the mackerel on top. Cover the pan and simmer for around four to five minutes until the mackerel is cooked. Serve immediately and sprinkle with torn fresh coriander leaves.

Sorry, no parking Mike Senker In my opinion Views of a Grumpy Old Man I JUST spent a few days in wonderful Sevilla. I booked a four-star hotel which was advertised as having parking on-site. As soon as I got there and asked where the car park entrance was, I was told it was closed for repairs. The hotel was on a main road so I couldn’t leave the car there, and the hotel guy said if I did a left, a right, another left... I didn’t hear the rest, just the last bit, which was ‘it’s €12.50 a day.’ I asked why they didn’t inform their guests before arriving that the car park was closed. After all, I’d had numerous emails from them or their booking agents pointing out offers I could partake in. I, of course, got the shrug. He then pointed out that I could take a chance and park on the other side of the road on a bit of wasteground which was free, but wasn’t as secure as the other one. I decided to take my chances and parked on the wasteground. I was greeted by a bunch of self-appointed parking attendants and one of then instantly took me to my al-
lotted space and guided me in. He then gave me my ‘parking permit,’ I gave him a couple of euros and that was the parking and the first problem sorted. Next, we get into our room and there were no tea or coffee making facilities. And, by the way, there is no restaurant in the hotel either, just room service which I find out is basically; you phone down and order food off the menu then they send out for takeaway. Again, something I didn’t realise, as I’d taken the breakfast included option so assumed there was a working kitchen there. Then there was the room itself; it was pretty small. Now you might be wondering why I didn’t do my usual ‘can I see the third room first’ routine. Well, I was on a bit of a warning from Mrs S, as we were celebrating our 30th wedding anniversary and she wanted a quiet few days away without me complaining or being grumpy. I tried my best - honest but then I couldn’t resist the remark I made to the duty manager, that as there was no mirror in the bedroom and only a small one in the bathroom, I hope he didn’t mind me getting dressed in the lift as there were four full-length mirrors in there. Next week: the journey home. Not to be missed, I promise.

Almanzora highway pledge COMPLETING the Almanzora dual-carriageway is a priority, the Andalucia government says. Junta de Andalucia Development, Infrastructure and Planning regional minister Marifran Carazo Villalonga has called on the Almanzo r a r e g i o n t o h av e ‘confidence’ that the commitment of this new government is to conclude this im-
p o rtan t in fra s tru ctu re a s soon as possible. The regional minister made the comments in the Andalucia parliament last week in response to a question from Almeria regional MP Rosalia Espinosa on the future of the project. Carazo Villalonga did not offer any specific timetable for putting out to tender the contracts for constructing the
outstanding stretch of the dual-carriageway. She did however report that 21 companies have put in bids for the Cucador-La Concepcion section and that they are currently being evaluated. Rosalia Espinosa said the Almanzora highway represented “the dream of valley residents for their region to be definitely connected to the Almeria coast.”

THE Minister of Culture brought the Rural Pride initiative in Seron to a close this weekend, an event designed at promoting the values and importance of pastoral life. Jose Guirao Cabrera referred to the ‘great challenge’ of preventing depopulation and inequality in the development of rural areas. Highlights of the Rural Pride weekend included a street procession, pottery and embroidery workshops, traditional dance and music and typical country cuisine. Local school children planted trees with the aim of raising awareness about the importance of preserving the environment.
AS many as 20,000 chickens died in a fire in an agricultural warehouse in Velez-Blanco. Calls reporting the incident at the site led to the immediate mobilisation of firefighters, Guardia Civil, Local Police and Civil Protection. The fire completely destroyed the factory before it was finally extinguished.

Job opportunities for unemployed CANTORIA Council is providing jobs for 10 local unemployed thanks to European and regional funding. The local authority will receive nearly €106,000 to contract three 18 to 29-year olds, two 30 to 44-year olds and four over 45’s, and a specialist in job placement. Eighty per cent of the financing comes from the European Social Fund Youth Employment Operative Programme and the remaining 20 per cent from the Junta de Andalucia. “Thanks to this programme we are going to be able to give work opportunities to residents with difficulties in finding employment, who will have the chance to work in various jobs for a period of between seven and 12 months”, explained Cantoria Mayor Puri Sanchez. Under the programme the

A glimpse of McLaren’s new car MCLAREN has unveiled a bit more of its much-anticipated grand tourer, but it is teasingly keeping it in camouflage wrap to hide its full glory. Up until now the only pictures of the car have seen it clad in shape-changing, additional body panels used to hide its true form. But now, the car’s ‘sleek and boldly elegant design,’ (according to McLaren) can now be discerned although the lightweight body remains covered by a shrink-wrapped livery. If you want to see more you will just have to be patient; the company is promising it will begin to peel off this disguise this May.
The application of the shrink-wrap will also enable the development team to enter the closing stages of the car ’s extensive evaluation programme, which has already encompassed thousands of miles in hot and cold climates across the globe. The team says that the ‘Grand Tourer’ has already proven its ability to cover long distances in supreme comfort, but it has so far done so with extra shapechanging and noise-inducing panels applied. Now that these have been removed, the development team will run further validation tests, including a 1,000 mile (1,600km) drive from

He stated the McLaren of Grand Tourers will be the most usable mid-engined car yet. The McLaren of Grand Tourers will also be the only one to share its DNA with a Hyper-GT; McLaren’s Speedtail. Mike went on to say the car - a name is yet to be announced - won’t be part of any of the company’s existing model series and will be a unique, tailored model. It’s interior will feel spacious, uncluttered and modern with only authentic, high-quality materials employed.

REVIEW by Tim Saunders INCREASINGLY - perhaps it’s old age setting in - I value a sat nav more and more. In fact, the strength of a car can plummet if it is fitted with a substandard device from my point of view. It’s the first thing I try when I sit in the Kia Stonic. And I am very impressed. It is extremely easy to use and it works. It’s easy to punch the destination details in and then it gets to work guiding you with precision. There are two qualms though, sometimes the instructions can be a little delayed for my liking and the voice sounds suspiciously like Theresa May. What about that name, too? Was it conjured up by an everso- slightly tipsy marketing team? Did they mean to call it tonic? As a fan of the 80’s BBC TV drama Howard’s Way, I can just imagine Jack Rolfe calling it’s name. So it’s already working then, a good name which recalls fond memories; it’s not going to be quickly forgotten. But then the other day while admiring the rear - where the name can be found - the ‘S’ is

larger than the ‘T’ which got me thinking that as the emphasis is on the ‘S’ perhaps this could refer to ‘super’ or ‘special’ ; a super or special tonic. A number of options here, but whatever it is, it is positive. There is no denying this is an attractive little estate car; little to look at from the outside and a small car feel when driving. Yet it easily accommodates five occupants and there’s a good-sized boot which swal-

The door inserts in the rear consist of hardwearing plastic, which is a good choice for mucky children. As the children still require child seats, seatbelt points need to be well-spaced to avoid causing me unnecessary aggravation when belting them in. Unfortu-

nately, although the width of the Kia is certainly not slim, the belt points don’t allow for the cumbersome child seats meaning it takes twice as long to strap each child in. Really annoying. My eldest daughter Harriett, seven, must have been in more than 100 cars already and she, like me, is always so excited about the arrival of a new one. The children enjoy spotting the different cars throughout the journey and even Henry spots a number of Kias. The Stonic provides a comfortable drive for both the driver and their passengers. It is quite a nippy car and the sound of the diesel engine can only really be heard when it starts. With engine stop/ start it is a pretty efficient vehicle too, delivering around 60mpg over the course of our time together. The six-speed manual gearbox is fairly smooth and the cruise control is easy enough to operate. Other refinements include air conditioning, all round electric wing mirrors, power folding wing mirrors and a useful reversing camera. Overall, I like the Stonic. Both outside and in it’s an attractive car with a sensible price tag.

The 30 countries in which these comprehensive tests are being carried out have temperatures ranging from -35 to over 50 degree celsius. “After carrying out computer simulations and comprehensive bench tests early on, we have now reached the final phase of this demanding testing programme,” says vice president of the model line, Stefan Weckbach: “Before the Taycan is launched at the end of the year, we will have covered approximately six million kilometres across the globe. We are already very happy with the current status of the vehicles. The Taycan is going to be a true Porsche.” At Porsche, electric cars have to undergo the same rigorous testing programme as sport cars with combustion engines. Other typical development targets include circuit performance, multiple accelerations, as well as a range suitable for everyday use. Test experts were able to build upon findings from the digital testing stage using digital prototypes. At present, computers are used to design the body, drive, chassis, electronics and overall vehicle of a new model and to simulate their functions, which includes how they work together. In total, the virtual prototypes of the Taycan have completed more than 10 million digital kilometres. The Porsche Taycan will be introduced in September and launched onto the market at the end of the year. Across the globe, there are already over 20,000 prospective buyers.

UNDERWAY: Cyclists were racing in the Vuelta al Pais Vasco this week.
On their bikes CYCLISTS arrived in the Basque Country for the start of this year’s Vuelta al Pais Vasco, the first stage of which began on Monday. Stage one of the race began and finished in Zumarraga. It saw riders cover a distance of 11.2 kilometres of narrow and windy roads through the heart of Green Spain. Around 141 riders took part in the race. Germany’s Maximilian Schachmann finished on top with a time of 17 minutes and 10 seconds. The Basque Country race comes ahead of that in Ibiza in May from Friday April 19, to Sunday April 21. The Vuelta a Ibiza Mountain Bike race is due to feature Spanish rider Joaquim Ro-
driguez who has notched some 45 wins throughout his professional career. It is also set to feature six-time Spanish champion Sandra Santanyes who is due to ride with husband Toni Pacios. The race is made up of three stages. Riders begin in Ibiza City where they ride to Sant Antoni de Portmany over a distance of 72 kilometres. All three stages make up a total distance of 230 kilometres, with riders climbing more than 5,850 metres in terms of altitude.

Competition year comes to a close CABRERA Lawn Bowls Club has drawn to a close with two competitions in recent weeks. First was the Cyril Heath Singles Handicap between March 15 and 21. This is a very popular competition as Cyril Heath was a long serving member of the club. The vey well contested final was between Peter Marriott and Tony Wells. Peter started the better, but Tony did not let him get out of reach. Peter only needed one point to win,
but sadly for him he dropped a four to lose the final 21-20. The club issued congratulations to Tony and commiserations to Peter. Completing the competition year was The Bob Wright Singles, held over several weeks beginning in February and concluding
with the final on March 22. This competition is slightly different as it is for members who have not won a singles club competition before. The winner is the first player to 21. The final was between Bob Craig and Joan Wells, and what a brilliant final it was.
Bob started the better, but Joan hung in there, not letting Bob get too far ahead. Bob did, however, eventually win 21-17. Bob has been on fantastic form all season and was a deserved winner. There were commiserations to Joan, who put up a brilliant fight.

Bowing out MURCIAN tennis player Nicolas Almagro has announced his retirement from the sport at the age of 33. Almagro, who was ranked ninth-best in the world in 2011 and who won 13 international titles, said he was leaving the profession with ‘pride’ in having being able to play. Almagro is now set to return to his native Murcia where he will head up a tennis academy in La Manga. The player said he had given everything to tennis throughout his career and that he was retiring in the same spirit that he played during his career. “I can say I have made my dreams come true. Many people told me I could have achieved more, but I have given everything to tennis,” Almagro said. “I have participated in a historic era for this sport. There have been many victories and many defeats,” he added. The 33-year-old announced his retirement at the Challenger Murcia Open tournament. He was accompanied by family and friends including football coach Jose Antonio Camacho, bullfighter Pein Liria and chef Pablo Gonzalez Conejero. Murcia City mayor Jose Ballesta was also present along with the region’s sports spokesperson Adela MartinezCacha. Almagro is due to take part in the tournament which will be his last before leaving the sport as a player. “It hurts me to only take part in the first edition but I will give my best and I hope to be playing all week,” he said.
