Welcome news for homeowners THE Andalucia government’s announcement it proposes a legal change allowing properties awaiting legalisation via a town plan access to basic services is welcome news, says the Abusos Urbanísticos Andalucia-NO (AUAN) homeowners’ association. AUAN said the change would allow houses on ‘asentamientos urbanisticos’ to connect to water and electricity supplies and to be registered at land registries by obtaining an AFO certificate. This would, according to AUAN, mean thousands of families in Andalucia would at last be ‘able to enjoy their homes in humanly acceptable conditions, subject to compliance with certain legal requirements and measures to correct any environmental impact.’
PRAISE: AUAN President Maura Hillen described the announcement as ‘like a breath of fresh air.’ Junta de Andalucia Development, Infrastructure and Territorial Planning Minister, the Popular Party’s Marifran Carazo, announced the proposal before a plenary session of the regional parliament last week.
Remembering terror victims COUNCILS around the province held a minute’s silence on Monday morning to mark the 15th anniversary of the Madrid train bombings and remember the victims of terrorism. The simultaneous explosions on March 11, 2004 claimed the lives of 193 people and injured around 2,000 more. Monday was also the European Day of Remembrance of Victims of Terrorism. Council President Javier A Garcia underlined Almeria’s solidarity, commenting, “The province wants to stand by the victims and condemn any terrorist or violent act.” In Vera, Mayor Felix Lopez declared the council wanted to “express our commitment to the struggle against terrorist brutality and our most sincere support for all victims, saying no to all kinds of terrorist violence.” Madrid bombings: See page 23.
AUAN President Maura Hillen Hillen praised the PP for maintaining commitments made to them prior to the elections, describing them as ‘people of their word.’ She also spoke optimistically about support for the change from other political parties, commenting, “The interventions during the plenary session made it clear that Ciudadanos is also sticking to its commitments. We believe that Vox is also disposed to solve the problem. “This is like a breath of fresh air for those affected,” the AUAN President remarked, adding, “We hope that the PSOE and Adelante
Andalucia will also see the necessity for this change, for social and environmental reasons.” Hillen said AUAN offered its collaboration and that of various other groups in Andalucia it works with “to help to make this measure as effective as possible and to bring it about as quickly as possible. “We hope to meet with the political parties and the minister shortly. Meanwhile, the statement from the minister has given us reassurance.” AUAN estimates there are some 2,000 properties on socalled ‘asentamientos urbanisticos’ in the Almanzora Valley and Levante region alone.

Robbery report drugs arrests GUARDIA CIVIL arrested a 30-year-old and a 54year-old man after uncovering a drug sale operation in a property in Viator. A search of the property led to the seizure of 67 grammes of cocaine, 77 grammes of hasish, two sets of precision sales, €612 in cash and a notebook containing details of the drug-related transactions. Officers discovered the drug sales operation after investigating reports of a possible robbery at the property.
Tortoise smuggler caught by police A ROUTINE Guardia Civil check on vehicles coming off a ferry from North Africa led to the discovery of a protected species of Mora tortoise hidden in a van. Officers found the tortoise in a box on top of the dashboard. The Guardia detained a 39-year-old for transporting the tortoise without Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of wild fauna and flora documentation issued by a member state administrative authority.

Art in flames THIS sculpture of a Spanish Conquistador taking on an Aztec king comes from Valencia City’s Las Fallas festival which begins tomorrow (Friday). Las Fallas is held in Valencia City every March and coincides with celebrations for the San Jose saint’s day. The celebration climaxes with the burning of the sculptures in an act known as La Crema on Tuesday. Las Fallas has its origins in the Middle Ages when craftsmen and
artisans would burn spare wood to celebrate the Spring Equinox. They would also burn their parots, or candleholders, and as the tradition evolved they began decorating them with hats and clothes to make it look like a person. The build up to the modern festival began on March 1 with the Mascleta. The Mascleta is a gunpowder display which takes place every day in Valencia City’s Plaza de Ayuntamiento at 2pm until Tuesday. Tomorrow sees the makers of the
Games hall thief GUARDIA CIVIL arrested a man suspected of stealing €5,000, identity theft and of illegally entering the country. Investigations into the individual followed the victim’s report someone had taken their wallet in which they had €5,300 in cash while they were in a games room in Roquetas de Mar. Footage from security cameras revealed what the thief looked like, allowing investigating officers to keep
an eye out for someone matching his description in the area’s games halls. Eventually they spotted the suspect leaving one establishment, reporting he looked edgy when he saw the Guardia patrol. When they asked for his identity the officer discovered the documentation he was carrying was someone else’s. When they did confirm his true identity they also found out an order had been issued prohibiting him from entering national territory.

Sunday and Monday sees a flower offering to a giant sculpture of Our Lady of the Forsaken, Valencia’s Patron Saint. Traffickers arrested POLICE interception of an inflatable dinghy off the coast of Almeria carrying Sub-Saharans led to the arrest of two men for trying to illegally bring immigrants from Morocco to Spain. There were 56 people in the boat, which was just nine metres long, 2.5 metres wide and powered by only a 25hp outdoor motor. The passengers included 11 women and three children. While processing and interviewing the immigrants, police,

assisted by the Guardia Frontiers and Coasts European Agency, identified the individuals believed to be responsible for navigating the boat. Police said the two, named as a 21 and a 26-year old from Senegal, had threatened the boat passengers with death if they reported them to the Spanish police. They also reported each immigrant had paid €4,000 to be taken to Spain.

Easier access GETTING to Playa de los Muertos, regularly voted one of the best beaches in Spain, is now easier. Carboneras Council has implemented a series of measures to make the track down to the beach less difficult to negotiate, while respecting the unspoilt natural surroundings. Stone steps have been created on a particularly steep 300-metre long section of the track, rocks and loose material have been manually cleared up, and a pathway has been marked out with stone borders. Five years for backstabber THE Almeria Provincial Court sentenced a man accused of stabbing someone in the back to five years in prison. The case dates back to May 2016, when the victim was loading suitcases into the back of their car in a Vera street. The aggressor, identified as EACA, approached the man and stabbed him twice in the upper part of his back and neck area with a knife with an 8cmlong blade. He was prevented from inflicting further wounds by others who went to the victim’s assistance. Fortunately the knife wounds did not touch any vital organs, but did require stiches, and the victim needed 10 days to recover from the attack. The court also ruled the aggressor has to pay €4,470 in compensation.
Sorting out road damage GARRUCHA Council has set to work on repairing 15kms of rural roads damaged as a result of last November’s torrential downpours. Town Planning councillor Jose Antonio Gallardo said there was a €20,000 budget for the works, which would all come from municipal funds.

Pedestrian safety steps WORKS are underway in the Los Labores area of HuercalOvera to improve pedestrian safety. As part of the Rural Employment Development Programme the local council is building pavements along the side of two stretches of road, at a cost of nearly €33,000. Huercal-Overa mayor Domingo Fernandez visited the works last week, saying the measure was a response to local residents’ demands. He pointed out that until now it has been necessary for pedestrians to walk along the side of the road ‘with the resulting danger this represented for traffic.’ The mayor reported the works were going well and should be completed soon, ‘giving our residents a greater daily quality of life and greater safety when it comes to walking around the area.’

Beach quality is recognised FIVE of Mojacar’s beaches have received national recognition for their quality. The Venta el Bancal, Ventanicas, Piedra Villazar, Descargador and Marina de la Torre have earned Spanish Tourism Quality (SICTED) awards, an initiative created by the Secretary of State for Tourism. Mojacar Tourism Councillor Emmanuel Agüero had the honour of collecting the quality commitment distinctions, which recognise and accredit the work carried out to comply with the system’s rigorous requirements. The latest distinctions are in addition to the European Foundation for Environmental Education Blue Flags which fly on Mojacar beaches every year, while the municipal tourist office has had the SICTED quality stamp every year since 2015. It was also the first tourist office in Andalucia to merit the Family Tourism Stamp and has the Q for Tourism Quality certification.

Music conservatory goes professional THE Cuevas del Almanzora music conservatory has gained professional status. Beginning in the next academic year it will become the professional music conservatory for the north Almeria region, following the Andalucia regional government’s approval of the change. Cuevas Education Councillor Ana Maria Castro thanked parents, teachers, pupils and music lovers for their perseverance in raising awareness about the importance of having professional musical training in the area.

Multi-ton coke haul by Sally Underwood BRAZILIAN police have stopped 1.7 tons of cocaine heading to Spain by ship. The large quantity of narcotics was allegedly found aboard a vessel at South America’s largest port, Santos. Police claimed the drugs were found by two sniffer dogs in a container carrying fresh lemons packed in paper boxes and headed towards Cartagena. The group behind the alleged smuggling attempt are said to have intended to move their cargo to another vessel once in the port of Algeciras. Brazilian officials claimed it is the largest amount of drugs seized in a single container at Santos and explained they believe the drugs were placed on board the ship without the knowledge of the lemon sellers.

‘Millions’ rally on Women’s Day HUNDREDS of thousands of protesters demonstrated in towns and cities across Spain and millions more went on strike on Friday to call for gender equality on International Women’s Day.
Trade union estimates placed the number of those taking part in the general strike called to coincide with the day at between five and six million. Around 5.3 million took part in 2018, with protests and
events held in around 1,500 locations across the country. The Madrid branch of the 8M Commission which helped to co-ordinate the protests and strikes said they were very happy with the turnout. “We had to repeat the strike because there are more than 1,000 reasons to keep protesting,” a spokesperson for the group said. “We exceeded expectations this year, which was difficult because of last year’s turnout,” the spokesperson added. Between 350,000 and 375,000 people are estimated to have demonstrated in Madrid, according to local authority figures. That is almost double the roughly 170,000 who took part in 2018. Valencian authorities estimated that around 220,000 took part in protests in the region’s capital on Friday. Barcelona’s Guardia Urbana estimated that around 200,000 turned out there. Estimates on the amount of people protesting in Sevilla range from 50,000 to 130,000. A manifesto read at the protests stated activists were fighting against policies made with ‘contempt’ for women. Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez said protesters had once again ‘made history’ with the demonstrations. The 8M Commission spokesperson said the fight would continue for gender equality because feminism is an ‘unstoppable force.’

Passport call HOLDERS of British passports due to expire in 15 months or less could be barred from some countries under a nodeal Brexit, a consumer group has claimed. Which? said passports with 15 months or less on them may fail to comply with the rules for entry to countries in the Schengen area, including Spain. Rory Boland, the editor of the Which? travel magazine, said millions of people could face disruptions to travel plans or be prevented from boarding planes. “Anyone who thinks they might be affected should look to renew their passport today or if you already have travel plans in the near future, consider using the fasttrack passport service,” Boland said. It comes as the British government recently launched an online passport checker which allows holders to see if they need to renew their documents. A Home Office spokesperson said new rules would apply to British travellers if Britain leaves the EU without a deal. “If your passport does not meet the new rules, you should apply for a new p a s s p o r t b e f o r e t r a v e l l i n g t o a ff e c t e d countries,” the spokesperson said.
Plan details By Joe Gerrard AN international law firm that works with British expatriates in Spain has released an outline about new measures passed by Madrid to secure residency rights in a no-deal Brexit. Pellicer & Heredia published an outline of the measures in the new Royal Decree-Law passed on Friday March 1. They have also produced an information video in collaboration with the Brexpats in Spain group’s Vice President Richard Hill. The law acts as a contingency plan in case Britain leaves the EU without a deal on Friday March 29. It is subject to London agreeing similar measures for Spanish citizens living in Britain. The law firm said the DecreeLaw requires all British nationals and their families to apply for a Foreigner Residence Card (Tarjeta de Identidad Exteranjero, TIE) before December 31 2020. This is because British nationals will be regarded as from a ‘third’ country, or one out-

EU migration pledge THE EU’s immigration spokesperson has said it recognised that Spain is facing ‘enormous’ pressure due to ongoing migration while pledging to step up funding to better manage arrivals. Dimitris Avramopoulos said the EU was ready to give Spain the technical, financial and political support it needed to deal with migration. The Immigration and Interior Commissioner added
the EU would step up its cooperation with Morocco to better manage migrant flows. “Spain is under pressure and will continue to have our full support. We gave Spain almost €36 million of emergency assistance last year,” Avramopoulos said. It comes as the EU pledged €140 million to improve border controls at Morocco. Hundreds of migrants have
attempted to cross the North African country’s borders with the Spanish enclaves of Ceuta and Melilla in recent years. More than 65,320 irregular migrants arrived in Spain in 2018, according to figures from the International Organisation for Migration. Many are fleeing war, poverty and persecution in their home countries in Africa and the Middle East.

Inequality concerns by Sally Underwood SPAIN has been placed 28th out of 33 countries for gender equality. A report by global consultancy firm PwC showed Spain was among the bottom 10 OECD (Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development) countries. Only Italy, Chile, Greece, Mexico and South Korea fared worse, with salary inequality in Spain reaching nearly 15 per cent.
Spain’s female unemployment rate fared even worse, making it the second highest figure out of the 33 countries, beaten only by Greece. However, the number of women entering the workforce has dramatically improved by almost 20 per cent in the last 17 years to 70 per cent. Euthanasia pledge S PA I N ’ S P r i m e M i n i s t e r has said the left-leaning Partido Socialista (PSOE) will legalise euthanasia if it takes power following Sunday April 28’s snap general election. Pedro Sanchez said a POSE government would recognise the right to euthanasia and to dignified dying. He was speaking at
a campaign event in La Coruña City in Galicia. E ff o r t s t o l e g a l i s e e u thanasia have been mounted since PSOE took power as a minority government in June. These have been blocked by the conservative Partido Popular (PP) and the centrist Ciudadanos. Supporters of euthanasia
argue it gives people with terminal or debilitating illnesses the option to die on their own terms and spare themselves more suffering. Opponents claim euthanasia could be abused if a terminally ill person is not of sound mind when making the choice and also criticise it on religious grounds.

Double celebration KNITTED KNOCKERS, one of the two charities supported by Costa Women’s IWD conference, had two reasons to celebrate last week. The charity’s team of knitters create handmade breast prosthesis for women who have undergone mastectomies or other procedures to the breast. And during the event, president Maria Bailey revealed that after trying to build connections with Spain’s health services for some time, she was delighted to announce the charity is now working with the Spanish association against cancer, AECC. “We have wanted to help Spanish women for some time, this is fantastic news for everyone. We believe the Spanish connection could now take off even more.” To round off a wonderful week for the charity,
Maria was presented with a €1,000 donation by Euro Weekly News Media Group CEO, Michel Euesden. Speaking afterwards, a visibly moved Maria said: “Today has been absolutely overwhelming. The generous donation was completely unexpected.” She added that the timing was perfect: “We have just had our annual general meeting. DISMEMBERED DOLPHINS: Police divers were called in after crew was allegedly spotted throwing bags into the sea. POLICE in Spain have opened an investigation after several bags of fish meat, believed to be dolphin, were recovered from the sea by divers. Basque regional police made the discovery in the port of Bermeo, in the Vizcaya region after two fishery
inspectors raised the alert about a fishing boat which had docked. Divers were called in after the crew was allegedly spotted throwing bags into the sea. The divers found and recovered three discarded bags and their contents de-
spite poor visibility in the water. Remains have been transferred to the headquarters of the Ertzaintza police, where forensic tests will verify if the remains are dolphin. The dolphin is a protected animal and its fishing is illegal in Spain.

11M: Remembering Spain’s worst terrorist atrocity ON Monday Spain remembered the worst terrorist atrocity to hit the country. On March 11, 2004, at 7.39am three bombs ripped through a train arriving at Madrid’s Atocha station. Seven more blasts soon followed on other trains. The grim toll was to reach 192 dead and more than 1,800 injured. The last victim to pass away was in 2014, after remaining in a coma for 10 years. Thirty-four people perished in the train which exploded in the Atocha station; 63 in the one that exploded in front of Calle Tellez; 65 on a train at El Pozo station; 14 in the one at Santa Eugenia station and 16 in different hospitals. Emergency services and the people of Spain rallied together - initially to offer immediate help and later to show solidarity for the victims in marches at-

Just three days after the attack The PP (conservative) government of José María Aznar unexpectedly fell in a general election. Within hours of the attack, and with no evidence, Aznar’s government blamed Basque separatists ETA. This was viewed by many as either a cynical election ploy and the Spanish people reacted by voting in the socialist PSOE led by José Luis
Rodríguez Zapatero, who held power until 2011. According to an investigation, the Al Qaeda affiliated Moroccan Islamic Combatant Group (GICM) was responsible for the attack, and the bombs were prepared on a farm in Chinchón (Madrid). On April 3 the police found seven of the terrorists in a flat in the Madrid town of Leganes. Surrounded by anti-terror police, the cell committed suicide with a strong explosion that also killed Deputy Inspector Francisco Javier Torronteras,
bringing the number of victims to 193. On February 15, 2007 a trial began in Madrid. The court concluded that 22 men participated in the attacks: the seven who committed suicide in a flat in Leganés and 14 other defendants and one unidentified person. The court decided that the Leganés’ seven, along with Jamal Zougam, arrested two days later, and Otman Gnaoui, arrested on March 30, placed 13 backpacks loaded with explosives (three did not detonate). Zougam and El Gnaoui were sentenced to 42,922 and 42,924 years in prison respectively (under Spanish law they will serve a maximum of 40 years). The rest of those found guilty were jailed for up to 15 years. Of the victims, 89 still suffer from injuries which have left them totally disabled or with a degree of physical incapacity that makes them unable to work.

DENIA’S Les Bassetes area is once again affected by an intolerable stench from an irrigation channel. They are tired of having to complain time after time, year after year about the state of several of the neighbourhood’s irrigation channels, residents said. All are dirty because they are never cleaned out but the worst is the Sarc channel, they explained, as they called on the town hall to find a solution. The Sarc’s little remaining water, which is stagnant, putrefied and muddy, attracts mosquitoes and vermin but worse still, it is filling up with all kinds of rubbish. “Some people seem to think it’s a rubbish tip,” Les Bassetes residents lamented. “As warmer weather approaches, the problem will increase,” they warned. “In the winter it’s still possible to walk in this area, but by summer the stench will be unbearable.”

Hop back on the salt tour train THE hugely popular train tour of the Torrevieja salt works and pink lake is recommencing this Friday. For just under €8, visitors can take the tourist train for an hour-long guided tour to the protected part of the Natural Park of the Lagoons of La Mata and Torrevieja where the city produces its salt for exportation. Torrevieja is the largest salt producer in Europe and the only one that uses floating machines to extract the salt from the water. During this visit, you can admire the ‘Garberas’ salt mountains, some of which are up to 20 metres high, the equivalent of a seven-floor building. And you will also discover some amazing facts about the area, such as the numerous uses of salt or why the water on the lake is pink. The train tour starts from the Paseo de la Libertad, opposite the main water fountain, with departures at 10am, 12pm, 2pm, 4pm and 6pm.

Traffickers foiled A SHIPMENT of 150 kilos of cocaine destined for Mallorca was discovered hidden in a solvent recovery machine, allegedly scuppering the plans of a Colombian gang known as Los Pachenca. The Guardia’s organised crime squad had been liaising with Colombian police for five months and were reportedly alerted to the fact that the group planned to transport the drugs to the island via the Netherlands. Acting on information provided, raids were carried out. Mobile phones were impounded and the Guardia Civil discovered that the cocaine was to be despatched from Colombia inside pieces of metal. The police in Colombia were notified and duly inspected the machine which was in a container. It transpired they had in fact infiltrated the gang, observing them for three months before making their move last week. Thirty-nine people have so far been arrested and almost €800,000, the proceeds from the sale of drugs, has also been seized.

Tax Agency VAT plans THE director general of Spain’s Tax Agency said officials are mulling a points-based VAT (IVA) system to certify compliant companies and allow them to avoid the rate on overseas purchases. Jesus Gascon said the criteria for the proposed system would include adherence to a code of good practice, transparency and making VAT payments without incident. He was speaking at the Thompson Reuters Foundation’s Tax Compliance Congress. Gascon said the deductions on overseas purchases would allow companies to pass savings onto consumers.

Business concerns TAXATION, the general economic outlook, regulations and demand were among the factors which negatively impacted Spanish businesses in 2018, according to a National Institute of Statistics (INE) survey of companies. The INE’s poll found that taxation was the leading concern, with 25.3 per cent of firms saying it was the factor which had the biggest negative impact on companies. Economic conditions during 2018 came second. It was cited as the leading negative factor by 24 per cent of companies. Taxation was of particular concern to

It was also listed as the chief concern among small firms employing 10 workers or less. It was followed by regulations with 22.7 per cent, defaults with 21.5 per cent and the level of demand for goods and services at 21.2 per cent. Other factors cited by businesses were legal costs, input costs, the availability of capital, human resources and the labour market.
Infrastructure and a lack of equipment came last. They were cited by 8.6 per cent and 7.2 per cent respectively. A total of 51.1 per cent of the companies surveyed said demand for their products was the most important factor to drive their growth. It was followed by economic conditions at 36.4 per cent, and regulations at 33.2 per cent. The impact of court costs, a lack of equipment and infrastructure were considered the least important factors for increasing companies’ growth capacity. The INE polled businesses from all sectors of the Spanish economy over a two-week period for the survey.

The firms have joined the Spanish Association of Executives and Directors’s (EJE & CON) Code of Good Practices for the Management of Talent and Improvement of Competitiveness. Maria Peña said Brexit had caused a lot of concern for the prospects of Spanish trade given that Britain is an ‘enormously important’ export market. But Britain’s withdrawal from the EU could give Spain the chance to move into other mar-
kets, allowing for Spanish economic activity to be better distributed. “Our foreign export sector has been reinforced in recent years and that is now bearing fruit meaning we can weather the storm of Brexit,” Peña said. Spain has been able to stave off economic slowdowns seen elsewhere in Europe, but dampening growth in China would affect it, the head of ICEX added.
THE Portobello Capital equity firm has sold its controlling stake in the Iberconsa fishery company to the US-based venture capital company Platinum Equity which is set to take over the stake in the Galicia-based firm later this year.

The Accenture consultancy’s Getting to Equal study found equality was a bigger driver for innovation than a company’s size, demographic make-up, sector or its geographic location. The report was released to coincide with Interna-
tional Women’s Day last Friday. The report stated: “The achievement of an egalitarian culture is not only an ethical imperative, but a business priority.” The study found that Spanish companies who promote equality and diversity can increase their creative capacities to seven times higher than firms which do not.

SPAIN’S prime minister has vowed to tackle what he claimed was worsening wages and working conditions in companies in the socalled ‘gig economy’ if he wins the upcoming general election. Pedro Sanchez said he would introduce regulations on firms including Uber, Cabify, Deliveroo and Glovo if his ruling left-leaning Partido Socialista (PSOE) takes power following Sunday April 28’s vote. He was speaking to Labour Ministry and trade union officials. “It is crucial to extend labour regulations and social protection to new forms of business. These businesses cannot be allowed to degrade wages and conditions under the false appearance of modernity,” Sanchez said. It comes as several court rulings, including one in favour of Telepizza delivery drivers, have set precedents on how labour law will apply to such firms. The gig economy refers to companies which employ workers as freelancers, which usually means lower wages and little-to-no social benefits.

Experiences push SPANISH department store chain El Corte Ingles has drawn up plans to put gyms, beauty centres and spas in its outlets to tackle rising competition from online retailers. Senior company figures said they were aiming to offer more experiences to customers to differentiate the firm from sites such as Amazon. It comes as an agreement reached in December with La Liga to feature football experience spaces in its stores has already drawn more than 87,000 extra visitors, company figures showed. Arsenio de la Vega, Sales Director at El Corte Ingles, said the company had to give customers a reason to visit stores given that they could buy products online from home. “In the past we relied on having products which others did not sell and giving a personalised service to

THE European Central Bank (ECB) has slashed its growth forecast for the eurozone for this year to 1.1 per cent from 1.7 per cent due to weak manufacturing performance and a fall in overseas demand, president Mario Draghi said.

Were his present-day accusers able to confront him in a court of law and give the sort of evidence we saw on the recent documentary Leaving Neverland, then Jackson would most definitely have spent the rest of his miserable life behind bars. Before all the diehard fans (whose bruised egos will NEVER let them admit that their chosen idol could commit such atrocities) begin screaming their hysterical dissent; consider this: what would your opinion be if you’d just heard that creepy, 50-year-old ‘Fred Smith,’ who lives in the next street, had admitted to sleeping with children, some as young as seven, over the past 20 years or more? You’d be calling for the removal of his head and testicles, that’s what. And you would be 100 per cent correct. Why then should you blindly accept these actions as the ‘norm’ from another individual, merely because he is a talented personality who can dance and sing? Michael Jackson followed all the traits of the classic paedophile. Pick your victim. Ingratiate yourself with the family (à la Rolf Harris) and then slowly but surely earn their trust and friendship. Ah, I hear from those who are still not convinced. What about all the other children who swore he never touched them, even though they too shared his bed? Well of course he didn’t, that was his devious ploy. He had already groomed his chosen sex objects. The other children were ‘beards.’ Especially actor Macaulay Culkin. What better high-profile vindicator could you have than this young, attractive and popular film star, swearing you never laid a hand on him? And just how do all you doubters think this obviously highly sexed individual was getting his rocks off over all those years? Celibacy? Ha! I hope these two young men get a fortune from Jackson’s estate. At least it’ll keep it out of the hands of his money grabbing family and lawyers. Just a few of the many words of positivity spoken by Robson about his friend MJ. Robson now seems to have changed his mind and is one of the two accusers in the documentary Leaving Neverland. I have no idea if MJ is guilty or not. What I do know however is that MJ has been dead for 10 years and is not here to defend himself. His two accusers had 25 years to bring their allegations. The FBI investigated MJ for years and found nothing. Yes his behaviour was weird, and holding sleepover parties with kids was probably not the best idea. What motivated parents to send their kids to Neverland? What I don’t get is all the comments on social media from people who know nothing

I HAVE an app on my phone which allows me to check my phone bill; usage of data etc. It was in Spanish, all I had to do was click on the app and all my info is there, but yesterday it asked me for my password and then wouldn’t let me in. I tried it half a dozen times but it wouldn’t allow me access? Why? Because it needs updating and I can’t update it because it’s Spanish. I have an iPhone and my account is in the UK store. I went to the UK site and they don’t have that app in their store, so I tried to change to the Spanish app store and it wouldn’t let me. Now, this must have changed because how did I get it on there in the first place? So, I called the helpline and tried to find out if they could help, being a helpline and all. After all the BS pleasantries we got on to the question in hand. To cut to the chase, yes, I can change my stores except no, I can’t. Why? Because I
have a credit balance, so the helpline suggested I spent my balance then changed stores, downloaded the update then changed it back. The only problem is, I have £100 balance, but that’s never going to be spent just to update an app. I thanked him and got the obligatory question; ‘Is there anything else I can help you with?’ I was tempted to ask what he had actually helped me with but I didn’t. Simple things can be so complicated sometimes. Controversial subject, I know, but honestly is it fair that if you are a 6ft 3in, 200pound transgender female, you should be able to compete in female-only sporting events? The reason I put the question like that, is because I don’t see any petite, dainty, transgender women competing. Again, I must emphasise, I am not transphobic or any other phobic, but you must be allowed to ask a question or have an opinion. Women and those running all-female competitions and sporting events need to ask themselves whether they are willing to allow other female competitors to be marginalised and prevented from fully succeeding and competing on an equal footing with other females; all in support of a social justice agenda.

I JUST read your article concerning the killing of cats. The same thing happened with five of my cats some time ago. I went to the vet and told them after I was sure they were poisoned and they advised me to go to the council and ask for Seprona, which is the animal safety dept (of the Guardia Cicil). They advised me if it happened again to leave the cat where it is, do not move it. They will then come with a sniffer dog which is capable of sniffing out where the poison came from. With me it never happened again so I did not use it but perhaps this is a possibility to find out who is responsible for this. Hope you succeed with this, it is so painful. Health care concerns READING the March 10 Sunday Telegraph, the UK government placed an advert saying that after March 29 UK nationals should buy travel insurance when visiting Europe as, presumably, the EHIC will no longer apply. I am a Spanish resident (with Spanish Health card) and my concern is what is the situation if I now travel to Germany, France or Italy or indeed UK? Should I now buy travel insurance? Graham Mills Editor’s note: While no-one knows exactly what will happen after Brexit, UK nationals resident and working in Spain and paying into the Spanish Social Security system should be able to access health care throughout the EU via the EHIC. At the moment it is not known how UK pensioners resident in Spain will be affected. The UK Embassy says bi-lateral talks to resolve issues such as these are well under way.

Standing up for their rights! I HAVE to say, having witnessed the ‘strikes’ and marches to mark last Friday’s International Women’s Day that the Spanish have really taken it to their hearts! All the major cities were heaving with women protesting against gender violence and inequality, as well as just coming together in solidarity. It is such a shame that women need to do this - but given the high levels of gender violence in Spain and the numbers of women killed at the hands of their partners, I am proud that women have decided to make a stand. I recently booked an ‘economy’ hire car for a long weekend, pick up Friday, return on Monday, so four days. For this I paid the grand total of £9 for a very nice Skoda Fabia. Yes, nine pounds. This is by no means the first time I have stumbled across a bargain like this on a car hire comparison website. I once hired a car for five weeks in February for £42. This particular one was from Niza Cars at Malaga Airport and everything was extremely smooth, no problems at all. So hiring a car is not always a nightmare…. Angus
LAST Friday saw hundreds of thousands of women protest in towns and cities across Spain on International Women’s Day, showing that the backlash against a male-dominated society continues unabated. A general strike called on women both in the workplace and in the home to down tools. ‘If we stop, the world stops,’ was their motto. The eyes of Spain and the world were certainly on those striking against ongoing gender inequality, including on pay gaps and the representation of women in senior business roles. Women are paid 22.8 per cent less than men on average for doing the same work when tax credits are taken into account, according to the Fedea economic research institute. Data from companies shows 18 per cent of board directors are female. Researchers from Pompeu Fabra University also found that while 10.4 per cent of men who apply for a job get an interview, only 7.7 per cent of women do. But women sought to address more than inequality in the workplace. Protesters were demanding that Spain confronts a toxic ‘maschismo’ masculinity that has seen three women killed since International Women’s Day. A total of 47 women died in proven or alleged gender violence-related attacks in 2018. The backlash against this is not only emerging on the streets. A play about the La Manada (Wolfpack) sex assault case shows these issues are now entering mainstream debates and culture. They will stay there until equality is achieved.

‘POLITICIANS come and go but governments go on forever’ Astonishingly, I agree with most of Leapy’s article on this occasion. I am looking just now at a graph in a BBC news item showing the percentages of English local authority schools in deficit in recent years. In 2018 it was 30.3 per cent. This is because English schools are being so underfunded by the Tory government that nearly a third of them
are now in deficit. Spending per pupil has fallen by 8 per cent in real terms since 2010 while hard pressed parents are being asked by head teachers to provide money for school books and even for roof repairs! Now here’s the thing, Tory politicians actually think it suits their purposes to keep the masses less well educated than they should be. After all if you are a well educated privately schooled Tory government minister, this makes it easier to pull the wool over the eyes of your electorate. Or so the thinking goes. So Tories always cut state education funds. Always. Where their thought processes fall down though, is that many of the problems facing our society today are partly caused by that poorer education. There are many other factors at work of course, but poor education is one of the largest contributory factors towards the ever increasing wealth gap between rich and poor. This leads to widespread unrest in our society. It feeds criminality. It feeds knife crime. It feeds uneducated hate crime. Fortunately for me, I come from Scotland where things are a bit different. Knife crime there, for example, is going down while it is soaring upwards in England. This is partly because Tory cuts in education and social services are partly offset by additional funding from the Scottish government. Scotland’s more caring approach is paying off. Unfortunately the English don’t have that option - not as long as the Tories are in power. And I don’t fancy their chances with the current Labour party either! Leapy’s right this time. Politicians and the wealthy ruling classes have us in their grip, and there is nothing we can do about it. Austerity sucks. Brian

DEBONED CHICKEN: Cooks faster than a whole chicken usually does.
Not as hard as you think... IN my quest to learn more about food preparation here at Olive Tree Farm, I decided last year to have a go at deboning a chicken. One of my friends does it regularly and said it wasn’t as difficult as it looked. After a quick search on the internet, I found a video on YouTube, where an experienced butcher showed how it was done, from start to finish in just over five minutes. The first attempt took me about an hour or so, mainly due to my knives not being sharp enough. Since then I have done it probably another six or so times, each time it got easier, although I still watch the video to remind me of the order in which to proceed. This week, I used my new knives, bought as a present for Christmas, and what a difference they made. It isn’t something that can be explained easily in writing, so I would

This time however, I did it slightly differently and after removing all the bones, and keeping the skin intact, I added an extra chicken breast, which I butterflied and placed in the centre of the meat instead of using stuffing. I then formed it into a cushion shape, tying with strings to keep it all together (see photo). Can I just add, it still takes me longer to remem-
ber how to do the butcher’s knots and tie it all together, than it now takes me to actually bone out the chicken. It may sound a bit of a waste of time, but trust me. The half hour or so spent is well worth it. The end result after roasting, gives you a lovely piece of meat, which is far easier to carve when you come to serve it, and it looks quite pretty as well. I brushed it with a little olive oil and sprinkled some herbs over it, and cooked it surrounded by vegetables in the middle of the oven on 190ºC, for about an hour and a half. It does cook faster than a whole chicken usually does. Hope you have a go, but make sure your knives are super sharp! Did you read about the Oxford college who served an octopus terrine at dinner one evening, which left a first-year student upset because she hadn’t encountered octopus before? Whereupon the college instantly banned it. Now, why should a dish be removed from menus just because a student was upset? I’m only amazed that, like any weedy millennial, she didn’t squeal, drop it, call the fire brigade and then go into therapy to cope with the PTSD. The same Oxford students then voted to ban Halal and Kosher meat. So, this year’s grads aren’t going to be much cop at any job requiring overseas travel. Unless that is, they take enough tofu sandwiches to tide them over. I think I’ll pour myself a large Scotch and lie down in a cool, dark room. Letting snowflakes dictate menus is like putting someone in charge of a blood bank despite knowing he’s changed his name from Count Dracula. Or being trapped in a lift for a week with David Cameron (or, worse, Tony Blair). All this ‘snowflakes getting upset’ nonsense makes you wonder how their future

Fees to be legal? We are a group of homeowners caught up in the ‘illegal’ housing problem. The boundaries have been changed, and we are told that the properties are now legal. However, our town hall are asking the homeowners to pay fees which the developers should have paid but didn’t when we purchased our houses. The charges include things like architects’ fees and subdivision costs. My question is: Are we, the homeowners liable for these costs when we have already paid the full price for our properties? Progress on water works upgrades ALMERIA Provincial Council President Javier A Garcia visited Taberno and Fines last week to see first-hand how the €450,000 of works on upgrading water infrastructure are progressing. The works include replacing 5.5 kilometres of pipes in Tabernas and 1.5 kilometres in Fines. The Hydrological Infrastructure Renovation Plan covers 20 municipalities in the Galasa water company network and represents an €8 million investment overall in Antas, Bedar, Carboneras, Cuevas, HuercalOvera, Los Gallardos, Mojacar, Pulpi, Taberno, Turre, Zurgena, Albanchez, Fines, Laroya, Macael, Sierro, Somontin, Sufli, Tijola, and in the near future, Arboleas.

The President spoke to ALZA members about the advantages of joining the Flavours Almeria gourmet brand platform, insisting, “Through this platform we aim to reach more locations than you could reach alone. “This brand encompasses all the high quality agri-food products produced in the province. This brand is open to all of you so you can become part.” He invited the businesses to participate in Flavours Almeria initiatives to boost sales and promote provincial products overseas, telling them, “Attending these fairs not only offers financial advantages, but also allows businesses to collaborate and feed off each other. It is the epicentre of what we want to sell and a strategy for increasing business opportunities.”
He also pointed out the gourmet brand is promoted at big events, like the La Vuelta cycle race, and via collaborations with Almeria-born singer David Bisbal, the latest promotional video featuring the star having now been viewed more than two million times on social media. Another council initiative the President referred to is aimed at encouraging entrepreneurs in municipalities with populations of less than 3,000: 3,500 self-employed who set up in these municipalities will be given assistance on access to financing for their businesses. ALZA was created in 2017. Association President Jose Antonio Lopez, who heads the honey production company at which the meeting was held, said it had been set up to bring businesses together, commenting: “We thought that union makes strength.” He said the association currently has 25 members, ranging from bakeries and butchers to construction companies and olive mills. Water company exec named TABERNO mayor Antonio Martos has been unanimously elected new chief executive of Galasa, the public company managing the water supply service in the Levante and Almanzora Valley areas of the province. Martos takes over the post from HuercalOvera councillor Antonio Lazaro. The Taberno mayor said he takes on the job with “the commitment of giving it my best.”

Lack of information beef THE Almeria Public Prosecutor agreed to lodge a complaint against Albox mayor Francisco Torrecillas and the local authority auditor for allegedly failing to provide information to the opposition PSOE Socialist party in connection with the renovation of the old convent building, recently inaugurated as the town hall. PSOE claimed it made repeated requests to the council for information in 2018 about the costs of the renovations, but received no response.

APSA AGM coming up THE Animal Protection Society Albox (APSA) charity AGM will take place at Chapmans in Albox on Tuesday April 9 at 2.30pm. The meeting will be open to everyone, but only APSA members will have the right to vote.
ASPA invites anyone interested in the charity to go along to find out more about its work: the animal shelter, shop, fostering, dog walking, fundraising, etc. Also at the meeting, it will be possible to join the charity or renew the annual â‚Ź5 member-

Mayor absolved A COURT in Almeria has absolved former Albox mayor Rogelio Mena of perverting the course of justice and the misuse of public funds in connection with expenses while he was in office. The magistrate-judge said there was a lack of proof of unlawful motive or implication of profit-making in Rogelio Mena’s conduct as a public representative. The charges against the exmayor had meant he was facing a sentence of an 18-month prison sentence, and a fine.

Prices increase moderately in February By Julie Day WHILE reports on property prices have shown positive results for quite some time, with house prices rising considerably each month - more so in some places than others - the latest study from the Tinsa IMIE General Index has shown that while prices are still going up, the rate at which they do so has slowed down slightly. Annually Figures for last month (February) have revealed that property prices as a whole, including both new builds and resales, are 4.1 per cent higher than they were in February 2018. However, this inter-annual increase of 4.1 per cent is 2.7 per cent lower than the annual increase in house prices recorded in January. Property prices went up the most in Spain’s big cities and metropolitan areas, at 7.2 per cent and 4 per cent respectively. In other areas of the country, the increase in prices was much less noticeable. In concrete, property prices on the Mediterranean Coast went up 2.9 per cent in the last year, while the Balearic and Canary Islands only registered an annual rise of 0.3 per cent.
MODERATE RISE: Studies show that while house prices continue to increase, they do so at a slower rate. Monthly With regards to the difference in property prices from January this year to February, only the capital and big cities saw their prices go up, and only by 0.1 per cent at that. House prices on the Mediterranean coast and in inland areas actually saw prices drop by as much as 4 per cent in the last month. Recovery Since house prices were at their lowest, they have recovered some 13 per cent on average across the country. As can be expected, property prices have recovered the most in Madrid and other large cities, at 23

per cent. Recuperation has also been strong in the Balearic and Canary Islands, where prices have clawed back 18 per cent from their lowest values. On the Mediterranean coast, the recovery has been in line with the national average, at 13.6 per cent and in metropolitan areas the figure is 12 per cent. In other areas, however, the value of property has not seen such an increase, with house prices only rising 5 per cent since reaching rock bottom. The current statistics also show house prices are now 34.7 per cent cheaper than what they were in 2007 at the height of the real estate boom.

Rise in Valencia furniture exports IN 2018, exports of furniture manufactured in the Valencia Region reached a total of €522 million. This is a 12.5 per cent rise on sales reached the previous year, according to statistics from Anieme. The majority of exports of Valencia furniture went to France followed by the Uni t ed St at es, and between the two this represented 40.5 per cent of all exports last year. Both countries imported more furniture from Valencia in 2018 than they did the previous year, with exports going up 23.6 per cent t o Fr ance and 13.6 per cent t o t he Uni t ed States. The r i se i n expor t s of furniture from Valencia last year was superior to
t he nat i onal aver age, which saw furniture exports go up 4.8 per cent. And, a comparison must also be made to the region of Cataluña, which only saw their furniture sales outside of Spain increase 2 per cent. Nevertheless, Cataluña is still the leading region in Spain for exports in this sector, and exports from this region alone total just over a quarter of all furniture exports in Spain. The Valencia Region is, however, not far behind, with exports reaching 23.5 per cent of Spain’s total. ROAD TEST by Nick Fletcher WITH diesel cars declini n g i n p o p u l a r i t y, m a n y people are considering switching to hybrid models, and though the choice is limited in the family hatchback sector, there are some stand-out models including the Lexus CT200h. Lexus has a well-established presence in the h y b r i d s e c t o r, a n d t h e CT200h is aimed at those who want hybrid performance from a practical family hatchback which also has premium cachet, and the Lexus brand certainly has that. CT200h prices start at €29,216 (£25,150), and it was this entry-level model which I tested. All versions use the same engine, a 1.8-litre 98hp petrol unit boosted by an electric motor and mated to a standard CVT auto gearbox. Performance is fairly typical of class standards; 0-100kph in 10.3 seconds, top speed 180kph

The ‘integrated patrol’ vehicles allow officers to set up checkpoints on any road across the country far easier than before, with the officers able to set up their equipment in seconds. Therefore, the chances of
those drivers who flout the rules being caught is increasing constantly, and the penalties getting harsher. Unlike the UK, one significant difference with the process in Spain is that roadside checks are evidential, and therefore the reading given at the time of being stopped is what will be recorded in the event of an offence having been committed. A blood test is only available when you have finished the alcohol test and you disagree with the result, and at your own expense. Refusal to co-operate is
considered a criminal offence. At the moment, if a driver exceeds their maximum prescribed limit at the roadside, the driver will be heavily fined and lose several points from their licence. In the event that the breathalyser exceeds 0.60mg/l, the driver becomes subject to a criminal proceeding and will be arrested. If the driver has not been arrested but has failed the roadside test, they will also have to find alternative means of getting to their destination, as the vehicle will be seized, the driver also facing a bill for recovery. If another competent driver is with the vehicle however, they will be allowed to drive, but will also be asked to undergo a test before proceeding.

IRISH jockey Dermott Lennon has come out on top against 15 other riders at the show jumping Grand Prix in Spain on Saturday. Lennon, from County Down, rode MJM Pursuit to finish first in 37.37 in Ve j e r d e l a F ro n t e r a in Cadiz Province, Andalucia. He landed a three-star 1.45m Grand Prix. The Czech Republic’s Emma Augier de Moussac finished second with 38.18, followed by Lisa Cubitt from New Zealand with 39. The riders were taking part in the Sunshine Tour.
Cabrera Lawn Bowls Club - the Mojacar Bowls Barry Woods Open Mixed Pairs marks fifth anniversary
CABRERA Lawn Bowls Club hosted the Barry Woods Open Mixed Pairs competition over the weekend of March 2 and 3. The competition was played on a round robin basis, with two groups of seven teams. Each team played six matches: the winners of each group played in the final, while the runners-up of each group played each other for the third and fourth places. Each match was over eight ends and played against a timer. Group A winners were Trevor Moore and Jean
WINNERS: Trevor Moore, Jean Ayres with Cath and Graham Patrick.
Ayres from Cabrera LBC and the winners of group B were Graham and Cath Patrick from Almeria BC. The runners-up from group A were John Henworth and Barbara Ruscoe from Indalo BC, while the runners-up from group B were Austin Crilly from Cabrera LBC with Sandra Brown from Almeria BC. Graham and Cath emerged the winners of the finals, beating Trevor and Jean 9-2. Austin and Sandra were third and John and Barbara fourth. Barry Woods, who is a founder member of Cabrera and spent many years as club president, kindly sponsored the competition and generously contributed to the prize money. The club issued thanks to all the organisers and spectators who made the event such a success, helped also by the fabulous weather.
MOJACAR Bowls Club celebrated its fifth anniversary on March 4 by hosting an open, all day triples event. This has proved to be a very successful occasion in the past, and this year was no exception, with players from the Almeria, Cabrera and Zurgena bowling clubs taking part and a crowd of spectators to cheer them on. Mojacar Sports Councillor Ana Garcia and Tourism Councillor Emmanuel Agüero were there to join in the anniversary celebrations, along with the managers of the Marina Playa and Marina Mar hotels. The final between Mojacar and Cabrera was a sudden death, three-end play off. It was a nail biting finish, with Mojacar putting in the winning shot by sending the jack into the ditch. Marina Mar hotel director Marta Astilleros did the honour of presenting the winners and runners-up with their trophies. Mojacar mayor Rosa Maria Cano inaugurated the Mojacar Bowls Club facilities in 2014. Belonging to the Hotel Servigroup Marina Playa, the facilities include a 25sqm green of artificial grass, a clubhouse and a bar terrace. Mojacar Bowls Club has grown tremendously since it was launched five years ago, and currently has around 70 members and holds top position in the local elevens league.
