Ravine crash AN elderly Norwegian couple has reportedly been seriously injured after their car dropped 30 metres into a ravine in Torrox. According to Spanish media, firefighters were forced to help release the

Julen case appeal DAVID SERRANO, the owner of the land where Julen died in January, has appealed a judge’s decision not to investigate claims the boy could have been killed during rescue attempts. Serrano’s lawyers are urging the Malaga court to call members of the Provincial Fire Brigade, mountain rescue and Guardia Civil to testify over the claims. Antonio Flores, the firm’s senior partner, claimed a report compiled by his company and signed by his brother, architect Jesus Maria Flores, shows Julen may not have been killed by his fall down the 71-metre well but by rescue efforts. A judge had previously rejected requests to carry out further tests saying expert testimony was still pending.
At the court case investigating possible negligent manslaughter, Serrano’s lawyers claimed two-year-old Julen could have been killed by initial efforts to reach him. The defence team handed the court a report claiming the child could have been killed by a long instrument reportedly used by rescuers to try to move a presumed blockage in the well and which turned out to be where Julen had landed. Lawyers claimed hairs allegedly found on the tool could show it had harmed the boy’s head. However, sources told Spanish media it is unlikely since no blood is said to have been found on the instrument. tion, while several others have been called as witnesses, including Antonio Sanchez, the man who reportedly drilled the borehole.

Wanted man THE National Police are asking members of the public to look out for a man accused of killing a man in Malaga City last December. The 31-year-old suspect is said to be Spanish, around 1.7 metres tall, with white skin and short hair. Police claim the man weighs around 70 kilograms, has a broken or missing lower incisor and
a black-coloured top incisor. Officers have also released surveillance images of the man they believe committed the stabbing, recorded on the day of the killing. The crime, which took place on December 30, saw a man stabbed to death and left on a road in Malaga. Police claimed the body showed several stab wounds to the back. Officers began investi-
AN Axarquia man is braving the arctic cold travelling 400 kilometres between Greenland and Canada to raise awareness about climate change. Torrox man Manuel Calvo, aged 52, will travel to the Arctic in April for the fifth consecutive year to carry out the challenge with just 16

Cash point robbery POLICE have arrested a man who allegedly robbed a 78-year-old woman after she withdrew money from a cash machine. The incident allegedly took place in the doorway of a building in Velez-Malaga after the perpetrator saw the woman using an ATM and then followed her to her building before stealing her purse. The victim claimed she was approached from behind by a hooded man who grabbed her arm and began rifling through her handbag. After the woman resisted, the suspect allegedly shoved her, causing the woman to hit her head on a handrail. The reported thief then took her bag, which contained the €50 she had just withdrawn as well as some personal documentation. Officers from the National Police claimed the accused is a 49-yearold Spanish man who has a record of several similar crimes and had also attempted to steal a phone. Police allege the suspect is a local man and that officers found the clothes he had been wearing the day of the reported robbery when they searched his house.

Art in flames THIS sculpture of a Spanish Conquistador taking on an Aztec king comes from Valencia City’s Las Fallas festival which begins tomorrow (Friday). Las Fallas is held in Valencia City every March and coincides with celebrations for the San Jose saint’s day. The celebration climaxes with the burning of the sculptures in an act known as La Crema on Tuesday. Las Fallas has its origins in the Middle Ages when craftsmen and
artisans would burn spare wood to celebrate the Spring Equinox. They would also burn their parots, or candleholders, and as the tradition evolved they began decorating them with hats and clothes to make it look like a person. The build up to the modern festival began on March 1 with the Mascleta. The Mascleta is a gunpowder display which takes place every day in Valencia City’s Plaza de Ayuntamiento at 2pm until Tuesday. Tomorrow sees the makers of the

Posters down THE Electoral Board has ordered Velez-Malaga Council to withdraw a series of campaign posters which reportedly imply achievements which have not yet been carried out. The official body has given the town hall three days to comply with the order after the council put up a series of posters using the tagline, ‘we comply,’ reportedly suggesting they had begun projects requested by local people.
The ruling was made after opposition party the Partido Popular claimed the campaign violated electoral law. The Electoral Board upheld the complaint, and said the council must bring down all posters which imply achievements which have not been carried out and which were funded with public money. The Partido Popular said the law states no public money can be used to fund celebrations of public achievements.

Sunday and Monday sees a flower offering to a giant sculpture of Our Lady of the Forsaken, Valencia’s Patron Saint. The festival winds up on Tuesday with La Crema with the sculptures torched from 10pm and the last one set alight at 1am the following morning.

Papaya progress THE Mayora Institute for subtropical fruit has announced it is carrying out trials to create a seedless papaya. The body said it is continuing to try to create new crops which can adapt to the climate and may help farmers in Axarquia. Research professor Iñaki Hormaza said he is conducting tests to see how different varieties adapt, as well as looking into producing papaya without seeds. He

explained papayas can be male, female or hermaphrodite. He said farmers normally grow hermaphrodite species which contain seeds but he is experimenting with growing female varieties which can be propagated in vitro and which do not contain seeds. Some seedless papayas are already grown and sold in Israel and La Mayora believes the fruits could benefit farmers in Spain too.

Driving test fraud THREE people have been arrested in Malaga on suspicion of pressuring a man to take a driving theory test on behalf of another person. The incident allegedly took place after the man supposedly owed money to two people and they pushed him to carry out the fraud to pay off the debt. Two men and one woman, aged between 36 and 44, have been arrested after the Malaga Provincial Police’s Economic Crimes Group reportedly became aware of their plot to falsely obtain a driving licence. Police claim the two men arrested were the money lenders who pressured their victim into taking the test, while the woman was said to be responsible for the logistics of the operation. Officers arrested the group on suspicion of organised crime, coercion, and falsifying documents. Police also reportedly seized four mobile phones, two wireless microphones, two shirts which allegedly contained hidden cameras, 14 theory test papers, €1,000, and various documents.
Take a hike THE Provincial Council has announced plans to invest €244,000 in creating two new hiking routes in Archez and Canillas de Albaida. The project will see paving and wooden fencing installed to connect the mountain towns to the GR249 hiking trail. Officials said the works are expected to take around four months and will create several kilometres of new paths.

New school almost ready FOLLOWING an outcry over reported delays in opening a new school in Torre de Benagalbon, the Junta de Andalucia has announced the building will be ready in time for September. Schoolchildren are expected to have to remain learning in prefabricated classrooms after it was revealed works to build a new school are delayed. The Junta de Andalucia has granted a three-month extension to the project following a series of setbacks includ-
ing piloting the foundations and issues with the materials due to be used. The works were expected to be completed on March 25, the date set when the contract was initially signed in October 2017, and are more than 50 per cent complete. Currently, around 240 schoolchildren are leaning in prefabricated classrooms until their permanent building is complete, leading to complaints from parents concerned over alleged damp conditions.
Vigilante squads LOCAL residents in Motril are reportedly taking to the streets at night to look out for crime. According to media reports, last weekend there were at least 10 vigilantes out in the early hours of Sunday morning, patrolling for crimes and reporting incidents to the police. The movement has caught the attention of both social me-
dia and the national news and is aimed at pushing the town hall to increase security at night. The volunteers, who are not trained or armed, said they do not intervene if they witness any crimes, but simply hope their presence will be enough to deter some incidents. Local woman Ana Rubia, who started the project on
Facebook, claimed she and other volunteers are tired of break-ins and alleges her own business has been the target of crime four times in the last four years. Ms Rubia said the group hope to expand and take selfdefence courses, as well as possibly creating a base in the community.

Irrigation guarantees TROPICAL fruit growers in Axarquia are calling on the Junta de Andalucia to provide guarantees over the future of irrigation. The Spanish Tropical Fruit Producers Association has said it wants to address the drought issue which affects Axarquia and has requested a meeting with officials. The group would like to meet delegates from the Department of Agricultures, Livestock, Fisheries and Sustainable Development from Malaga and Granada. The body had a list of 40 measures it would like implemented to secure irrigation supplies.

No tram deal VELEZ-MALAGA Council has reportedly failed to find any companies willing to take on the project to restart the town’s tram service. After an initial tender failed to attract any companies, the council began a series of talks with specialist firms in February, however it has been reported there have still been no offers to take on the project. The town’s mayor, Antonio Moreno Ferrer, said the issue did not mean the works would not go ahead. The Tram campaign is one of the main projects of the current council coalition. The project would include work to kilometres of tracks, new video surveillance systems, roads signs and signals.

O n M a r c h 11 , 2 0 0 4 , a t 7.39am three bombs ripped through a train arriving at M a d r i d ’s A t o c h a s t a t i o n . Seven more blasts soon followed on other trains. The grim toll was to reach 192 dead and more than 1,800 injured. The last victim to pass away was in 2014, after remaining in a coma for 10 years. Thirty-four people perished in the train which exploded in the Atocha station; 63 in the one that exploded in front of Calle Tellez; 65 on a train at El Pozo station; 14 in the one at Santa Eugenia station and 16 in different hospitals. Just three days after the attack The PP (conservative) government of José María Aznar unexpectedly fell in a general election. Within hours of the attack, and with no evidence, Aznar ’s government blamed Basque separatists ETA. This was viewed by many as either a cynical election ploy and the Spanish people reacted by voting in the socialist PSOE led by José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero, who held power until 2011. According to an investi-
gation, the Al Qaeda affiliated Moroccan Islamic Combatant Group (GICM) was responsible for the attack, and the bombs were prepared on a farm in Chinchón (Madrid). On April 3 the police found seven of the terrorists in a flat in the Madrid town of Leganes. Surrounded by
anti-terror police, the cell committed suicide with a strong explosion that also killed Deputy Inspector F r a n c i s c o J a v i e r To rronteras, bringing the number of victims to 193. On February 15, 2007 a trial began in Madrid. The court concluded that 22 men participated in the attacks: the seven who committed suicide in a flat in Leganés and 14 other defendants and one unidentified person. The court decided that the Leganés’ seven, along with Jamal Zougam, arrested t w o d a y s l a t e r, and Otman Gnaoui, arrested on March 30, placed 13 backpacks loaded with explosives (three did not detonate). Zougam and El Gnaoui were sentenced to 42,922 and 42,924 years in prison respectively (under Spanish law they will serve a maximum of 40 years). The rest of those found guilty were jailed for up to 15 years. Of the victims, 89 still suffer from injuries which have left them totally disabled or with a degree of physical incapacity that makes them unable to work.

A bin collector is said to have found the body early in the morning before alerting police. ‘Millions’rally on Women’s Day HUNDREDS of thousands of protesters demonstrated in towns and cities across Spain and millions more went on strike on Friday to call for gender equality on International Women’s Day. Trade union estimates placed the number of those taking part in the general strike called to coincide with the day at between five and six million. Around 5.3 million took part in 2018, with protests and events held in around 1,500 locations across the country. The Madrid branch of the 8M Commission which helped to co-ordinate the protests and strikes said they were very happy with the turnout. “We had to repeat the strike because there are more than 1,000 reasons to keep protesting,” a spokesperson for the

Passport call HOLDERS of British passports due to expire in 15 months or less could be barred from some countries under a nodeal Brexit, a consumer group has claimed. Which? said passports with 15 months or less on them may fail to comply with the rules for entry to countries in the Schengen area, including Spain. Rory Boland, the editor of the Which? travel magazine, said millions of people could face disruptions to travel plans or be prevented from boarding planes. “Anyone who thinks they might be affected should look to renew their passport today or if you already have travel plans in the near future, consider using the fasttrack passport service,” Boland said. It comes as the British government recently launched an online passport checker which allows holders to see if they need to renew their documents. Plan details By Joe Gerrard AN international law firm that works with British expatriates in Spain has released an outline about new measures passed by Madrid to secure residency rights in a no-deal Brexit. Pellicer & Heredia published an outline of the measures in the new Royal Decree-Law passed on Friday March 1. They have also produced an information video in collaboration with the Brexpats in Spain group’s Vice President Richard Hill. The law acts as a contingency plan in case Britain leaves the EU without a deal on Friday March 29. It is subject to London agreeing similar measures for Spanish citizens living in Britain. The law firm said the DecreeLaw requires all British nationals and their families to apply for a Foreigner Residence Card (Tarjeta de Identidad Exteranjero, TIE) before December 31 2020. This is because British nationals will be regarded as from a ‘third’ country, or one out-

Double celebration KNITTED KNOCKERS, one of the two charities supported by Costa Women’s IWD conference, had two reasons to celebrate last week. The charity’s team of knitters create handmade breast prosthesis for women who have undergone mastectomies or other procedures to the breast. And during the event, president Maria Bailey revealed that after trying to build connections with Spain’s health services for some time, she was delighted to announce the charity is now working with the Spanish association against cancer, AECC. “We have wanted to help Spanish women for some time, this is fantastic news for everyone. We believe the Spanish connection could now take off even more.” To round off a wonderful week for the charity,
Maria was presented with a €1,000 donation by Euro Weekly News Media Group CEO, Michel Euesden. Speaking afterwards, a visibly moved Maria said: “Today has been absolutely overwhelming. The generous donation was completely unexpected.” She added that the timing was perfect: “We have just had our annual general meeting. Tax Agency VAT plans THE director general of Spain’s Tax Agency said officials are mulling a points-based VAT (IVA) system to certify compliant companies and allow them to avoid the rate on overseas purchases. Jesus Gascon said the criteria for the proposed system would include adherence to a code of good practice, transparency and making VAT payments without incident. He was speaking at the Thompson Reuters Foundation’s Tax Compliance Congress. Gascon said the deductions on overseas purchases would allow companies to pass savings onto consumers.

Firms join work code
Business concerns TAXATION, the general economic outlook, regulations and demand were among the factors which negatively impacted Spanish businesses in 2018, according to a National Institute of Statistics (INE) survey of companies. The INE’s poll found that taxation was the leading concern, with 25.3 per cent of firms saying it was the factor which had the biggest negative impact on companies. Economic conditions during 2018 came second. It was cited as the leading negative factor by 24 per cent of companies. Taxation was of particular concern to
By Joe Gerrard firms in the construction, transport and hospitality sectors, while economic conditions were cited most by industrial and financial companies. It was also listed as the chief concern among small firms employing 10 workers or less. It was followed by regulations with 22.7 per cent, defaults with 21.5 per cent and the level of demand for goods and services at 21.2 per cent. Other factors cited by businesses were legal costs, input costs, the availability of capital, human resources and the labour market.
Infrastructure and a lack of equipment came last. They were cited by 8.6 per cent and 7.2 per cent respectively. A total of 51.1 per cent of the companies surveyed said demand for their products was the most important factor to drive their growth. It was followed by economic conditions at 36.4 per cent, and regulations at 33.2 per cent. The impact of court costs, a lack of equipment and infrastructure were considered the least important factors for increasing companies’ growth capacity. The INE polled businesses from all sectors of the Spanish economy over a two-week period for the survey.
A TOTAL of 16 Spanish companies have signed up to a new code which pledges them to improve access to senior management roles for female employees. The firms have joined the Spanish Association of Executives and Directors’s (EJE & CON) Code of Good Practices for the Management of Talent and Improvement of Competitiveness. Airbus, Autogrill Iberia, Bankia, Caternon, CLH, Enagas, Everis, Grupo GSS, HC Clover PS, Iferma, Mediapost Spain, Metlife, Norgine, Organizacion Red de Mentoring de España, Reale Seguros, Red Electrica all joined.

CHANCE: Brexit could boost trade. THE head of Spain’s Foreign Trade Institute (ICEX) said Brexit provides an opportunity to move into other overseas export markets, boosting economic activity. Maria Peña said Brexit had caused a lot of concern for the prospects of Spanish trade given that Britain is an ‘enormously important’ export market. But Britain’s withdrawal from the EU could give Spain the chance to move into other mar-
kets, allowing for Spanish economic activity to be better distributed. “Our foreign export sector has been reinforced in recent years and that is now bearing fruit meaning we can weather the storm of Brexit,” Peña said. Spain has been able to stave off economic slowdowns seen elsewhere in Europe, but dampening growth in China would affect it, the head of ICEX added.

The Accenture consultancy’s Getting to Equal study found equality was a bigger driver for innovation than a company’s size, demographic make-up, sector or its geographic location. The report was released to coincide with Interna-
tional Women’s Day last Friday. The report stated: “The achievement of an egalitarian culture is not only an ethical imperative, but a business priority.” The study found that Spanish companies who promote equality and diversity can increase their creative capacities to seven times higher than firms which do not.

SPAIN’S prime minister has vowed to tackle what he claimed was worsening wages and working conditions in companies in the socalled ‘gig economy’ if he wins the upcoming general election. Pedro Sanchez said he would introduce regulations on firms including Uber, Cabify, Deliveroo and Glovo if his ruling left-leaning Partido Socialista (PSOE) takes power following Sunday April 28’s vote. He was speaking to Labour Ministry and trade union officials. “It is crucial to extend labour regulations and social protection to new forms of business. These businesses cannot be allowed to degrade wages and conditions under the false appearance of modernity,” Sanchez said. It comes as several court rulings, including one in favour of Telepizza delivery drivers, have set precedents on how labour law will apply to such firms. The gig economy refers to companies which employ workers as freelancers, which usually means lower wages and little-to-no social benefits.

Experiences push SPANISH department store chain El Corte Ingles has drawn up plans to put gyms, beauty centres and spas in its outlets to tackle rising competition from online retailers. Senior company figures said they were aiming to offer more experiences to customers to differentiate the firm from sites such as Amazon. It comes as an agreement reached in December with La Liga to feature football experience spaces in its stores has already drawn more than 87,000 extra visitors, company figures showed. Arsenio de la Vega, Sales Director at El Corte Ingles, said the company had to give customers a reason to visit stores given that they could buy products online from home. “In the past we relied on having products which others did not sell and giving a personalised service to

THE European Central Bank (ECB) has slashed its growth forecast for the eurozone for this year to 1.1 per cent from 1.7 per cent due to weak manufacturing performance and a fall in overseas demand, president Mario Draghi said.

LEAPY LEE SAYS IT OTHERS THINK IT AFTER watching the recent documentary on Michael Jackson, I truly do wish he were still alive. Were his present-day accusers able to confront him in a court of law and give the sort of evidence we saw on the recent documentary Leaving Neverland, then Jackson would most definitely have spent the rest of his miserable life behind bars. Before all the diehard fans (whose bruised egos will NEVER let them admit that their chosen idol could commit such atrocities) begin screaming their hysterical dissent; consider this: what would your opinion be if you’d just heard that creepy, 50-year-old ‘Fred Smith,’ who lives in the next street, had admitted to sleeping with children, some as young as seven, over the past 20 years or more? You’d be calling for the removal of his head and testicles, that’s what. And you would be 100 per cent correct. Why then should you blindly accept these actions as the ‘norm’ from another individual, merely because he is a talented personality who can dance and sing? Michael Jackson followed all the traits of the classic paedophile. Pick your victim. Ingratiate yourself with the family (à la Rolf Harris) and then slowly but surely earn their trust and friendship. When you have accomplished this, very carefully begin to separate the victim from the jurisdiction of their parents. Once alone with your target you can then begin to concentrate on what your intentions truly are. And quite frankly what chance does a little innocent have
against such a devious adversary - a family friend who their parent trusted and loved? My heart went out to these two haunted and utterly screwed up young men. Desperately trying to get their lives back together and create normal relationships. Trying to dispel the guilt that their abnormal relations with Jackson could possibly have been their own fault.
Admitting that they loved him, and still did. Confessing to their families, fully aware that in doing so they would destroy their parents in the knowledge that they had been duped into making catastrophic mistakes in their children’s upbringing. Ah, I hear from those who are still not convinced. What about all the other children who swore he never touched them, even though they too shared his bed? Well of course he didn’t, that was his devious ploy. He had already groomed his chosen sex objects. The other children were ‘beards.’ Especially actor Macaulay Culkin. What better high-profile vindicator could you have than this young, attractive and popular film star, swearing you never laid a hand on him? And just how do all you doubters think this obviously highly sexed individual was getting his rocks off over all those years? Celibacy? Ha! I hope these two young men get a fortune from Jackson’s estate. At least it’ll keep it out of the hands of his money grabbing family and lawyers. Ad blockers? You may break the internet, warns Terence Kennedy THE internet - like magazines - is essentially a device to get us to read advertising. Or so marketers thought until a few years ago. Then an unforeseen thing happened; ad blockers. They started small on computers in the mid-90’s, then grew, and grew. Exasperated by a profusion of pop-ups, flashing banner ads, superimposed videos, in-your-face messages and seriously unsubtle selling, some 30 per cent of internet users now employ ad-blockers on their devices, rising to more than 40 per cent among the young. Smartphone ad blocking has more than doubled in just four years. Granted, many online marketers brought it on themselves, pushing their ads ever harder, higher, and louder, swamping our screens until finally we cried ‘Enough!’ The people have spoken, hallelujah; but in doing so, might we ultimately ‘break’ the internet we now take so much for granted? The one where we now expect content and
information to be largely free for the taking? It’s obviously not from the goodness of their hearts or social philanthropy, that the corporate world spends gazillions on websites and all the gubbins it takes to get them onto our screens. They need to sell us stuff, and if they can’t, something’s got to give. But spoiled by years of ‘free,’ users are showing a stubborn reluctance to pay. Those brave souls (notably news sites) who have
moved their content behind socalled ‘paywalls’ have taken a massive hit, and for many that’s just not sustainable. Even the world’s most ad-driven techno giant Google was forced to capitulate; for the past year or so its Chrome browser - the world’s most popular - has had an ad blocker built in, with others following suit. Lest we think of the early ad blocking pioneers as online knights in shining armour, their business
models have not been squeakyclean. Many pressed companies to pay them to ‘whitelist’ their sites by default, in a modern take on the venerable protection racket. Those of us who do block ads either actively through an independent ad blocker, or passively because it comes built in with our browser, now regularly face pleas from sites we visit to ‘unblock’ their ads if we want to continue. Some folks will take the time and trouble, some won’t know how, and some will simply back out and move on. It’s hard to see this ending well without a radical rethink on both sides, and a technical arms race between advertisers and ad blockers. Bill Gates predicted early on that the internet represented the future of advertising. But marketing Guru Maurice Saatchi worried that advertising could actually be killed by the internet. Power to the people: for once it’s actually our call.
IF you do decide to ad-block, current browsers like Chrome or Opera enable it automatically, by default. Others like Firefox need optional add-ons. Ad blockers are generally free ‘extensions’ for browsers. The most popular include AdBlock Plus, AdBlock (no relation), AdBlocker Ultimate, uBlock Origin and 1Blocker. But blocking simply everything is really not a good way to go. Blockers let you ‘whitelist’ sites you favour, usually through an icon in the browser address bar which can simply be clicked and it’s done. In the meantime we all need to agree a middle way; a degree of advertising we can tolerate, in exchange for the internet’s wealth of free stuff. It’s either that, or the latest industry fightback tool; adblock killers. Followed by, what, ad-block killer killers?

GOOD morning class. No talking at the back, please. I’d like to begin with a moan. Did you read about the Oxford college who served an octopus terrine at dinner one evening, which left a first-year student upset because she hadn’t encountered octopus before? Whereupon the college instantly banned it. Now, why should a dish be removed from menus just because a student was upset? I’m only amazed that, like any weedy millennial, she didn’t squeal, drop it, call the fire brigade and then go into therapy to cope with the PTSD. The same Oxford students then voted to ban Halal and Kosher meat. So, this year’s grads aren’t going to be much cop at any job requiring overseas travel. Unless that is, they take enough tofu sandwiches to tide them over. I think I’ll pour myself a large Scotch and lie down in a cool, dark room. Letting snowflakes dictate menus is like putting someone in charge of a blood bank despite knowing he’s changed his name from Count Dracula. Or being trapped in a lift for a week with David Cameron (or, worse, Tony Blair). All this ‘snowflakes getting upset’ nonsense makes you wonder how their future

Fees to be legal? We are a group of homeowners caught up in the ‘illegal’ housing problem. The boundaries have been changed, and we are told that the properties are now legal. However, our town hall are asking the homeowners to pay fees which the developers should have paid but didn’t when we purchased our houses. The charges include things like architects’ fees and subdivision costs. My question is: Are we, the homeowners liable for these costs when we have already paid the full price for our properties? Also, is there a time limit on these debts after which they become null and void? We are approaching 15 years since purchasing our houses. MH (by e-mail)

I tried it half a dozen times but it wouldn’t allow me access? Why? Because it needs updating and I can’t update it because it’s Spanish. I have an iPhone and my account is in the UK store. I went to the UK site and they don’t have that app in their store, so I tried to change to the Spanish app store and it wouldn’t let me. Now, this must have changed because how did I get it on there in the first place? So, I called the helpline and tried to find out if they could help, being a helpline and all. After all the BS pleasantries we got on to the question in hand. To cut to the chase, yes, I can change my stores except no, I can’t. Why? Because I have a credit balance, so the helpline sug-
gested I spent my balance then changed stores, downloaded the update then changed it back. The only problem is, I have £100 balance, but that’s never going to be spent just to update an app. I thanked him and got the obligatory question; ‘Is there anything else I can help you with?’ I was tempted to ask what he had actually helped me with but I didn’t. Just a few of the many words of positivity spoken by Robson about his friend MJ. Robson now seems to have changed his mind and is one of the two accusers in the documentary Leaving Neverland. I have no idea if MJ is guilty or not. What I do know however is that MJ has been dead for 10 years and is not here to defend himself. His two accusers had 25 years to bring their allegations. The FBI investigated MJ for years and found nothing. Yes his behaviour was weird, and holding sleepover parties with kids was probably not the best idea. I JUST read your article concerning the killing of cats. The same thing happened with five of my cats some time ago. I went to the vet and told them after I was sure they were poisoned and they advised me to go to the council and ask for Seprona, which is the animal safety dept (of the Guardia Cicil). They advised me if it happened again to leave the cat where it is, do not move it. They will then come with a sniffer dog which is capable of sniffing out where the poison came from. With me it never happened again so I did not use it but perhaps this is a possibility to find out who is responsible for this. Hope you succeed with this, it is so painful. Health care concerns READING the March 10 Sunday Telegraph, the UK government placed an advert saying that after March 29 UK nationals should buy travel insurance when visiting Europe as, presumably, the EHIC will no longer apply. I am a Spanish resident (with Spanish Health card) and my concern is what is the situation if I now travel to Germany, France or Italy or indeed UK? Should I now buy travel insurance? Graham Mills Editor’s note: While no-one knows exactly what will happen after Brexit, UK nationals resident and working in Spain and paying into the Spanish Social Security system should be able to access health care throughout the EU via the EHIC. At the moment it is not known how UK pensioners resident in Spain will be affected. The UK Embassy says bi-lateral talks to resolve issues such as these are well under way.

MARCHES: Women joined massive rallies around Spain.
Standing up for their rights! I HAVE to say, having witnessed the ‘strikes’ and marches to mark last Friday’s International Women’s Day that the Spanish have really taken it to their hearts! All the major cities were heaving with women protesting against gender violence and inequality, as well as just coming together in solidarity. It is such a shame that women need to do this - but given the high levels of gender violence in Spain and the numbers of women killed at the hands of their partners, I am proud that women have decided to make a stand. I recently booked an ‘economy’ hire car for a long weekend, pick up Friday, return on Monday, so four days. For this I paid the grand total of £9 for a very nice Skoda Fabia. Yes, nine pounds. This is by no means the first time I have stumbled across a bargain like this on a car hire comparison website. I once hired a car for five weeks in February for £42. This particular one was from Niza Cars at Malaga Airport and everything was extremely smooth, no problems at all. So hiring a car is not always a nightmare…. Angus
LAST Friday saw hundreds of thousands of women protest in towns and cities across Spain on International Women’s Day, showing that the backlash against a male-dominated society continues unabated. A general strike called on women both in the workplace and in the home to down tools. ‘If we stop, the world stops,’ was their motto. The eyes of Spain and the world were certainly on those striking against ongoing gender inequality, including on pay gaps and the representation of women in senior business roles. Women are paid 22.8 per cent less than men on average for doing the same work when tax credits are taken into account, according to the Fedea economic research institute. Data from companies shows 18 per cent of board directors are female. Researchers from Pompeu Fabra University also found that while 10.4 per cent of men who apply for a job get an interview, only 7.7 per cent of women do. But women sought to address more than inequality in the workplace. Protesters were demanding that Spain confronts a toxic ‘maschismo’ masculinity that has seen three women killed since International Women’s Day. A total of 47 women died in proven or alleged gender violence-related attacks in 2018. The backlash against this is not only emerging on the streets. A play about the La Manada (Wolfpack) sex assault case shows these issues are now entering mainstream debates and culture. They will stay there until equality is achieved.

‘POLITICIANS come and go but governments go on forever’ Astonishingly, I agree with most of Leapy’s article on this occasion. I am looking just now at a graph in a BBC news item showing the percentages of English local authority schools in deficit in recent years. In 2018 it was 30.3 per cent. This is because English schools are being so underfunded by the Tory government that nearly a third of them
are now in deficit. Spending per pupil has fallen by 8 per cent in real terms since 2010 while hard pressed parents are being asked by head teachers to provide money for school books and even for roof repairs! Now here’s the thing, Tory politicians actually think it suits their purposes to keep the masses less well educated than they should be. After all if you are a well educated privately schooled Tory government minister, this makes it easier to pull the wool over the eyes of your electorate. Or so the thinking goes. So Tories always cut state education funds. Always. Where their thought processes fall down though, is that many of the problems facing our society today are partly caused by that poorer education. There are many other factors at work of course, but poor education is one of the largest contributory factors towards the ever increasing wealth gap between rich and poor. This leads to widespread unrest in our society. It feeds criminality. It feeds knife crime. It feeds uneducated hate crime. Fortunately for me, I come from Scotland where things are a bit different. Knife crime there, for example, is going down while it is soaring upwards in England. This is partly because Tory cuts in education and social services are partly offset by additional funding from the Scottish government. Scotland’s more caring approach is paying off. Unfortunately the English don’t have that option - not as long as the Tories are in power. And I don’t fancy their chances with the current Labour party either! Leapy’s right this time. Politicians and the wealthy ruling classes have us in their grip, and there is nothing we can do about it. Austerity sucks. Brian

THE judge who last month upheld an appeal to halt Francisco Franco’s exhumation from the Valle de los Caidos explained his position long before. The Historical Memory Law ‘represents the thirst for revenge on the part of the defeated,’ he maintained in a 2007 magazine article. The Historical Memory Law, passed in 2007 during Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero’s first term as president, recognises the victims of both Civil War bands, gives rights to victims and the descendants of victims during the Civil War and Francisco Franco’s post-war dictatorship, while formally condemning his regime. Despite its good intentions, the Historical Memory Law still rankles with some descendants of some victors. The old claim that there are two Spains has not been laid to rest along with the old dictator who still lies in state in the Valle de Los Caidos. On the contrary, it’s no myth and it’s alive and occasionally it kicks as well.

Until I’d experienced it, Carnival was for me a high street procession with lots of baton-twirling majorettes, trade vehicle floats and children in fancy dress. Then, shortly after coming to live here, we left La Gomera to prevent the car being snatched by the Guardia Civil for overstaying its welcome, (this was preEU membership, think of all the fun after Brexit!) for

It was the Entierro de la Sardina (burial of the sardine) final day. The children and I drove, astonished, into what looked like a city-wide performance of the Rocky Horror Show. Everyone was in black, wailing and screaming. There were nuns, ghouls, priests, tarts, bishops, and thousands of grief-stricken, howling widows of both sexes, many with enormous plastic breasts. The death of a giant sardine had upset them badly; a mock priest eulogised to frenzied wailing. As an exconvent girl, (but all Brits are prudes compared to the Spanish) I was thrilled, and continue to be so.

Presumably Ciudadanos leader Albert Rivera would not be averse to this, either, as his views are flexible on most issues except Cataluña. He was venomously critical of Pedro Sanchez’s failed attempts at dialogue which, as a Catalan viscerally opposed to independence, he interprets as weakness. Casado and Rivera increasingly give the impression that they are as fanatically opposed to rationality and mediation as the Catalan separatists.And ultimately, they are capable of inflicting as much harm to the region they want to save.

UK media should focus on its own woes
Barry Duke THERE’S an interesting Internet resource called Numbeo, which allows one to make a variety of comparisons between world cities. One can check out the differences in, for example, costs of living, property prices, quality of life and the like. I homed in on crime, and compared Spain’s capital with the UK’s; and was far from surprised to learn that Madrid is by far the safer city. It has a safety scale of 67.38 as opposed to London’s 48.08. Madrid’s crime index stands at 32.68, while London’s is 51.92. What prompted me to research crime statistics was the wide coverage given mainly in UK tabloids to a recent incident in Benidorm in which two doormen were stabbed - thankfully not fatally - at the Beachcomber bar. Two young Brits were arrested in connection with the attack. After I expressed my fury on Facebook, saying: ‘Brits bringing their knife crime culture to my home town. Disgusting!’ Someone I know well Andy Mansell - promptly berated me, saying ‘The UK tabloids are engaging in an awful lot of unwarranted ‘Benidorm bashing’ at the moment and

But this they won’t do, because they are the ones who have done the most to poison public attitudes towards people they’ve cruelly chosen to caricature as interlopers. If Hitler were alive today, he’d be rubbing his hands with glee.

Recently my youngest daughter Stefanie sent me a message from Brazil saying that she had the most amazing raw surf and turf using oysters and steak tartare. I immediately went to work on a similar concept

lunchtime clients who loved it. Either way cooked or raw the idea of eating something from the ground like beef and combining it with something from the sea sounds unusual, but tastes unusually, sensational! I recall the occasion when I cooked surf and turf for the pop star Beyonce in Abu Dhabi. She was performing at the Yas Marina Circuit where my company was contracted to look after all food and hospitality. She had asked for some fresh fish and the crew wanted burgers, so we served some fresh red snapper with some fish sushi and lobsters. We also served homemade cheeseburgers on one large platter and we arranged lobster tails around the burgers.
Beyonce who loves her food but looks after herself, tries to stay away from red meat. She swooned at the buffet of fish, shellfish and sushi and commented it was the most beautiful food, but where is the pizza? She was joking, but in truth she loves a jalapeno pizza! Meanwhile the crew had finished off the burgers and the lobsters together on one plate whilst Beyonce’s plate was a bit finer consisting of some fresh fish, quinoa salad and a little lobster, no burger. I called in to check on them all and she said Chef we are great, I love you! Beyonce I said I love you too… but then again so does the whole goddamn world! A few hours later she performed live at our arena at
Yas Marina in front of 46,000 people after the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix in 2009. My mother was with us in those days and although she had memory loss, she remembered some of the words to Crazy in Love and the Best Thing I Never Had and she moved a little to the music whilst we watched the show from a suite above the arena… I didn’t know that you liked Beyonce I said to my mum, Beyonce she said… Who’s that?

Following Saturday’s defeat, Rayo have now lost six games back to back, but the match did get off to a promising start with an opening goal from on-loan Real Madrid striker Raul de Tomas. However, defender Gerard Pique equalised before half time, and Barca went on to notch up two more with a penalty from Lionel Messi and a strike from Luis Suarez. A 4-1 win over Real Valladolid ended a run of three straight defeats in all competitions for Real Madrid, but press attention was more focused on the drama surrounding manager Santiago Solari’s sacking. MotoGP opening drama THE opening MotoGP of the season in Qatar on Sunday saw Ducati’s Andrea Dovizioso clinch a last bend victory after a record-breaking and controversial race. Firing past the Repsol Honda of world champion Marc Marquez on the home straight, Dovizioso took the flag 0.023 seconds ahead of his rival. Britain’s Cal Crutchlow finished a close third, just 0.32 seconds adrift. The top 15 riders were separated by just over 15 seconds, a premier class record, and the top five by only 0.6 seconds. But Dovizioso’s win was not without controversy, after Honda, Suzuki, Aprilia and KTM lodged a protest over a new aerodynamic wing on the Ducati’s rear suspension. The protest was rejected, though an appeal was later lodged.
SPORT Neymar tax probe THE Spanish tax authorities are reportedly investigating Neymar in relation to a bonus he received for renewing his Barcelona contract shortly before leaving the club for Paris Saint-Germain. Apparently, the intervention of the tax authorities in an ongoing judicial procedure is rare and has been ordered to determine if Neymar paid the correct taxes on his €64.4 million bonus and on his €222 million transfer to PSG. As such, according to Spanish press, the tax authorities have asked the Barcelona Labour Court for all paperwork relating to the case in which Neymar and the club are trying to settle their outstanding debts. Neymar lived in Spain for more than 183 days in 2017 and therefore has to declare all his income from both Barcelona and PSG as a tax resident in the country. La Liga leaders Barcelona allegedly made the first payment of €23.7 million to Neymar for his renewal bonus and the Brazilian’s subsequent transfer left the rest of the bonus outstanding. Hockey win SPAIN has bested New Zealand after winning during penalties at hockey in Australia, leaving the team in fourth place in the FIH Pro League before playing Germany tomorrow (Friday). Victory for the Fred Soyez-led team comes after Spain won a shoot-out against Belgium and Holland who were both World Cup finalists. Spain gained an early lead in the match before the New Zealanders equalised in the 38th minute. Marc Miralles scored in the 53rd minute before Pau Quemada bagged another, his second of the match, bringing the total to 3-3. Both teams then went head to head in a penalty shootout. Spain scored a total of four goals in the shootout, with New Zealand missing twice. The victory comes as Spain plays Germany tomorrow in Valencia City. Germany is third in the FIH Pro League, with Australia first and Belgium second.
