Driving home vital blood donor initiative By Tara Rippin SIXTY taxi drivers are taking a life-saving campaign to the streets of Mallorca to promote blood donation. The Autonomous Association of the Autonomous Taxi of Mallorca (ASATM) has linked up with the Blood and Tissue Bank Foundation to try to drive home the importance of donating. As part of the partnership, ASATM has provided space on the bodywork of their vehicles for advertising and will keep information booklets inside the taxis to give out to passengers. The initiative apparently came about following concerns from association members about the levels of donations the foundation needs and receives. A spokesperson said that knowing the amount of blood the victim of a serious road ac-
cident may require prompted board members to volunteer to help raise awareness. The blood foundation confirmed that dealing with casualties of a traffic accident may require up to the equivalent of 30 individual donations. Almost 35 per cent of the transfusions carried out in Mallorca are on patients who have undergone surgery or who have suffered some type
of trauma, such as those involved in traffic accidents. In the Balearic Islands every day, 200 donations are needed to attend to all patients. And because blood can’t be manufactured, the foundation relies entirely on blood donors. Anybody aged between 18 and 65 years and weighing more than 50 kilos can donate blood. The Traffic Department confirmed that in 2017, the number of accidents with victims in urban and rural roads resulted in 389 injuries which required hospitalisation, and possible transfusions. This was 39 more accidents than the previous year. ASATM, founded in 1977, has more than 900 members and is integrated into the Independent Federation of Taxis of the Balearic Islands (FITIB). Illegal street trading by Tara Rippin TRADERS in Mallorca have blasted a report carried out by Palma City Council which claims legitimate businesses are not affected by street vendors. The Federation of Small and Medium-sized Enterprises of Mallorca (PIMEM), the Gremi d’Oficis Artesanals i Artístics of the Balearic Islands and the Association of Artisans of the Plaza Mayor, organisations attached to the employers, are in total disagreement with the survey. They claim the study is ‘unreal’ and are so upset about the document, they have asked the council to apologise. PIMEM, president, Jordi Mora, said: “Our associations have reiterated

Theft ruling A COURT in Palma has ordered the deportation of two Algerians who admitted to mugging a woman and making off with €20. The court ruled the two defendants, aged 18 and 21, will not be able to come back to Spain for eight years. They are also set to pay out €50 in compensation to the victim. The court heard the defendants approached the woman early in the morning after seeing her withdraw money from a cash machine. They then grabbed her, ripped her shoulder bag from her and made of with it and the €20 inside.

Dead man on the rocks in Cala Llamp, Andratx THE body of a young man, believed to be an expat, was discovered on the rocks after his car reportedly fell 100 metres from cliffs at Cala Llamp, Andratx. The Guardia Civil found the car on Monday evening and in the early hours of Tuesday morning the police force’s special group of underwater activities (GEAS) located the body. An investigation has been launched to discover what happened, but initial reports suggest the car may have been driven deliberately into the sea.

Mental tests for murder suspect PSYCHIATRISTS are due to draw up a report into the mental state of a man accused of killing his ex-partner in Palma following a court ruling. The court ruled Rafael Pantoja, 44, s h o u l d u n d e rg o t e s t s which took place at Son Espases Hospital. It comes after he threatened suicide whilst in custody ahead of his trial. Psychiatrists are now working to determine whether he was mentally impaired when he committed the crime on November 16, 2018. A spokesperson for the hospital said psychiatrists had already ruled out the possibility of the accused having serious mental issues. Pantoja has been charged with stabbing Sacramento Rosa several times with a machete at the furniture ship where she worked in the Mallorcan capital. The defendant is also accused of harassing Rosa in the run-up to her death, including puncturing her car tyres. The case continues.

World beater THIS beach in northern Spain has come fourth in TripAdvisor’s ranking of the world’s best coastlines. La Concha Beach, in the Basque city of San Sebastian, beat others in Jamaica, Sicily, Hawaii and the Seychelles in the travel site’s 25 Best Beaches in the World ranking. It came behind Baia do Sancho in Brazil, Cuba’s Varadero and Eagle Beach on the Caribbean island of Aruba. Ses Illetes, on Formentera in the Balearic Islands,
came 14th in the ranking. La Concha beach is nestled in the bay of the same name to the west of the River Urumea on the coast by San Sebastian. It covers an area of around 54,000 square metres and has an average length of 1,350 metres and an average width of 40 metres. It is a sandy beach which faces outwards onto shallow waters which give way to the Atlantic. A rock formation known as Santa Clara Island sits roughly in the
Dogs eat fishhooks AT least six dogs in Molinar have been operated on after reportedly swallowing fishhooks hidden inside bait and later discarded by fisherman in rocks or on the beach. Another pet is being treated for poisoning, and some of the dog owners have apparently had to pay up to €1,000 in vet bills. Those affected, living between the Portitxol lighthouse and Sa Roqueta del Molinar, have lodged formal complaints to the Department of An-
imal Welfare, the Ministry of Environment, Agriculture and Fisheries and the Seprona of the Guardia Civil. They have questioned the legality of fishing in certain parts of the area, and claim that as a result of the practice, the seafront is becoming a mess and full of dirt. As such, the pet owners are requesting that fishermen are urged to fish responsibly, be monitored and sanctioned by the relevant agencies.

Destitute death A HOMELESS Polish man in his 60’s was found dead on Monday night in a field in the Palma neighborhood of El Amanecer. Other people living on the streets noticed the victim was not moving and contacted emergency services. Reports reveal there were no signs of violence and initial findings suggest the deceased may have died from a cocktail of alcohol and drugs. A post-mortem was expected to be carried out yester-

day (Wednesday) and the National Police has launched an investigation. Two weeks ago a homeless woman in her 30’s was found dead in an apartment block stairwell in the city, prompting criticism of the city council. Residents claimed they witnessed the woman deteriorate quickly before passing away, and felt more could have been done. The authority said it had offered assistance to the victim, which had reportedly been refused.

New hotels NINE hotels with around 1,500 rooms are set to be built across Mallorca, developers have said. The hotels are being built by six developers and will be constructed in the Camp de Mar area of Andratx, Palma, Playa de Palma and Sa Coma. The Sapphire and Zafiro Palaca Andratx are due to open in 2020. They are set to add some 600 hotel rooms between them across nine buildings. Feminism tribute TONIGHT a documentary exploring the history of feminism in the Balearic Islands will premiere in Mallorca at 7pm in the Cinema Ciutat, Palma. Semillas de futuro (seeds of the future) will feature around 30 interviews from various women involved in the feminist movement in the islands, dating from the 1970’s. The documentary explores six different
themes, including health and sexuality; work; gender violence; studying; empowerment and political participation, and activism and culture. Produced by Good News, one of the initiatives from the Balearic Women’s Institute, interviews were carried out by journalist Victoria Morell, while writer Nuria Varela was responsible for the script.

€900,000 health centre THE Health Service is looking for a company to build a new health centre in Consell. According to media reports, the unit will include a doctor and a nurse, as well as a full time paediatrician. The 760 squar e m et r e building will offer two fami l y m edi ci ne ser vi ces, as well as general consultat i ons and t wo t r eat m ent rooms. The project is thought to have become necessary following an increase in Consell’s population, which has grown to 3,651 health card holders. The new centre will sit on a 4,134 square metre plot on the northern edge of the town in a wellconnected site near the municipal sports centre.
Child doctor shortage ABOUT half of all roles for child and family doctors in the Balearic Islands are covered by medical professionals from other specialities, according to a professional body. Figures from the Association of Paediatrics and Primary Attention of the Balearic Islands (APAPIB) show 56 out of 114 paediatrician positions are covered by child doctors. Those figures also showed the Balearic Islands has the highest proportion of child doctor places not covered by specialists, APAPIB added. APAPIB said the figures suggest ed l ocal chi l dr en were held in less regard than in other parts of Spain. “Families have a right to know if the person who is looking after them or their children is a qualified paediatrician,” the association said. All of the positions for child doctors in the La Rioja region are filled by professional paediatricians, they added.

Supply and demand PRESIDENT of the association of distributors, Bartomeu Servera, claims that companies involved in storage and supply of food and other products have noted a decrease in demand due to an apparent fall in tourism and hotels opening late.
Compared with January and February last year, there has been an average decrease of 3 per cent. Servera said if that level of decline were to continue, there would be a serious problem for the distribution sector.
The town hall also raised the issue of an agreement signed with the ports authority in 2004 which granted the use of public spaces to the town for up to 25 years. This deal enabled the ports authority to redevelop the dock and build the maritime station, which it did.
Gender violence rally THE Feminist Movement of Mallorca held a rally in front of the courts of Via Alemania in Palma on Tuesday to protest against what it terms patriarchal justice. The group argues that the judicial system holds women responsible for aggressions and violations against them, and is calling on support for national feminist strikes planned for tomorrow (Friday), International Women’s Day. In addition, the movement wants to see more gender training for members of the judicial system and a review of the law on gender violence. Spokesperson Anna Lopez said: “There is a brutal lack of protection of women. The current law needs to be applied effectively, the definition of sexist violence must be expanded and the necessary resources for the protection of females have to be put in place.”

Gibraltar tax pact By Joe Gerrard SPANISH and British officials have signed a treaty covering taxes and finances in Gibraltar, the first agreement of its kind since the one which handed the enclave to Britain. Spanish Foreign Minister Josep Borrell and Britain’s Cabinet Office Minister David Lidington signed the agreement on Monday. It covers arrangements for the British enclave after Brexit. It will stop Gibraltar undercutting Spanish tax rates and curb payment fraud if approved by Spain’s Council of Ministers and Parliament, Spanish Foreign Ministry sources said. Borrell said the agreement had involved a lot of work due to it covering sensitive issues and there being many issues at stake.
The treaty is the first to be signed between London and Madrid on Gibraltar since 1713’s Treaty of Utrecht which handed the British control of the Rock. Its signing comes as Madrid and London became involved in a separate diplomatic spat over the exclusion of Gibraltar’s airport from
no-deal Brexit contingency plans. British officials were reportedly concerned that EU documents referring to those arrangements did include references to Spain’s claim to the ‘isthmus’ on which the airport is built. The isthmus is the roughly 800-metre strip of land which connects Gibraltar with the Spanish mainland. It was not included in the Treaty of Utrecht and has been disputed ever since.
New reforms THE Spanish government has passed a raft of new reforms to make it easier for scientific institutions to hire staff and for scientists to buy equipment, as well as helping researchers return to the field after maternity and paternity leave.

Workplace discrimination By Sally Underwood SPAIN’S cabinet has announced it will crack down on gender discrimination in the workplace. New legislation, approved by the PSOE party, will see new fathers granted up to 16 weeks of paternity leave by 2021, while businesses will also be made to complete equal pay audits. Politicians claimed women’s hourly earnings are 12.7 per cent lower than men’s in Spain and announced businesses will be forced to compile figures on average salary values, bonuses, and non-wage benefits by gender. The law, which currently only applies to companies with more than 250 employees, will be adopted by those with more than 150 employees in the legislation’s first year, those with more than 100 employees in its second year, and 50 or more in the third year.

Blaze deaths TWO people have died after a fire broke out in an apartment building in Barcelona. At 7 . 3 0 o n Su n d ay morning a group of firefighters were called to the scene after receiving multi p l e a l e r t s f r o m neighbours of the complex. The blaze broke out on the fourth floor of an 11storey apartment building with residents of the 44 apartments evacuated. The f i r e wa s e x t i n guished around half an hour after the incident occurred. According to Spanish press, the victims were between 60 and 70 years of age. Rep o r t s a l so c o n firmed that several witnesses stated that they had heard an explosion appare n t l y f r o m th e apartment.
Catalan trial Rajoy testifies at Madrid hearings By Joe Gerrard S PA I N ’ S f o r m e r P r i m e Minister has said ex-Catalan Generalitat officials on trial over the 2017 independence referendum and declaration knew he would not allow a vote to ‘liquidate’ Spain. Mariano Rajoy, who was in office when the referendum was held in October 2017, said he was obliged to defend Spanish unity under the country’s Constitution. He was speaking as a witness in the ongoing trial of 12 defendants at the Supreme Court. Rajoy, who activated Article 155 after the Catalan Generalitat declared independence following the 2017 vote, said he and other officials had acted with

Article 155 was the constitutional mechanism used to suspend Cataluña’s regional authority and impose direct rule from Madrid after the independence declaration. “We made efforts to get support from everyone. is the Spanish who should decide what Spain is,” Rajoy told the court. Rajoy said he did not recall any violence and added he did not have any data to hand on the issue. “I never made decisions about police operations, those were taken by offi-

Prosecutors will have to prove those defendants used violence to gain independence while defence lawyers claim it was Madrid and Spanish police forces that used force on protesters and voters. Former Secretary of State for Security Jose Antonio Nieto told prosecutors he believed activists with the Committee for the Defence of the Republic (CDR) encouraged violence. Nieto, who testified on Monday, also claimed the Catalan Generalitat had encouraged it. The trial continues.

Marbella shooting AN investigation has been activated by the National Police after a man was injured during a shooting last Friday evening in Marbella. According to inform a t i o n p ro v i d e d b y the police to the local Spanish press, a man was transferred to the Marbella Costa del Sol hospital with multiple injuries after g u n s h o t s w e re re p o r t e d a t a ro u n d 9.00pm. The incident occ u r re d i n t h e L a Dama de la Noche urbanisation, located in the Nueva Andalucia area. Reports indicate that the authorities are searching for two men believed to have been involved in the incident.
Heavy winds fan flames GALES complicated the work of firefighters battling to control more than 100 fires in the north of Spain. Seventy-seven of the fires were located in Asturias where gusts reached 100 kilometres per hour while in Cantabria the regional government activated its Forest Firefighting Plan owing to warnings of high wind. Residents in Muskiz (Vizcaya) had to leave their homes as a forest fire approached and were temporarily housed at the municipal sports centre. This blaze was the most serious of the forest fires affecting Vizcaya where, as in Asturias and Cantabria, high winds were causing difficulties.

AN assault on the North Korean embassy, originally dismissed as a hysterical woman’s overreaction, was probably espionage. The ambassador Kim Hyok Chol was expelled by Spain following North Korea’s nuclear tests in September 2017. Only one diplomat, staff and their families now live at the embassy in the exclusive Aravaca area outside Madrid. Late last month 10 men stormed the house, hooding its occupants whom they tied up, struck and interrogated. “They carried replica weapons and held the Koreans for two hours,” sources close to the case revealed. A woman who managed to escape through a window was spotted minutes later by a National Police patrol car. A GROUP of Spanish laboratories warned around 30 per cent of medicines approved for rare diseases by the European Medicines Agency do not make it onto the Spanish market. The collective claimed only 61 of 118 rare disease treaments available in Europe were approved in Spain. The group added: “The current average time [for approving drugs in Spain] is 19 months, well above other EU countries.” It added the time taken before a medicine goes on sale in Spain jumped from 12.4 months between 2002 and 2013, to 14 months in 2014 and 2017. The association said: “While not a significant difference, the data shows it is necessary to implement new policies to reduce inequality of access.”

GBP: THE pound enjoyed a positive couple of weeks. The statistics gave some assistance and while the clock was ticking on Brexit, the news of another postponed vote actually proved to be positive for the pound. Investors were hopeful that MPs, empowered to rule out a no-deal and propose an extension to Article 50 if the updated deal fails to pass, would prevent a no-deal scenario. Early in the week, sterling has climbed to the highest point against the Euro since May 2017 over the increasing likelihood of a Brexit delay. After Theresa May’s address to parliament, the pound touched a 21month high against the euro. The ongoing strength was attributed to a report in the Evening Standard that the EU would prefer a much longer, 21-month delay. As the date of the vote draws closer and the details of any delay emerge, there may be renewed volatility in the pound. EUR: The European Central Bank has evidently recognised that the Euroland economy is
not firing on all cylinders. More than one member of the bank’s Governing Council spoke during the week of a possible need to increase monetary stimulus or extend the period of near-zero interest rates beyond the summer. Eurozone manufacturing activity went into reverse for the first time in over five years. The situation weighed on the euro which lost out against the pound as Brexit sentiment approved, but it made gains against the US dollar and has gained some bullish momentum. At the end of the month, EUR/USD was trading above 1.14 and investors appear to believe it may have further to go. USD: The numbers from the US are lacking consistency which is causing some volatility. The minutes of the Federal Open Market Committee’s January meeting revealed the Fed is preparing to bring to a halt its disposal of the trillions of assets built up during the quantitative easing programmes. The US-China trade war rumbled on, but the postponement of the deadline without a new date gave investors hope a resolution was being sought. CAD: A speech on monetary policy by Bank of Canada governor Stephen Poloz did nothing to help the Canadian dollar. He had to concede the future course of interest rates is ‘highly uncertain.’
Investors had been hoping for something more concrete than that. Canadian inflation came in at 1.4%, a little lower than forecast and the loonie lost two thirds of a cent on the news. AUD: When RBA governor Philip Lowe made his biannual appearance at the House of Representatives Economic Committee, he sounded generally comfortable with the economy. He saw no problem with falling house prices, arguing ‘as prices come down, new households can form.’ The Aussie was on average unchanged. NZD: Like the Australian dollar, the New Zealand dollar is under pressure due to trade concerns. News that the RBNZ proposes to increase capital ratios to 16% of risk-weighted assets and balance this with lower interest rates was not good news for the kiwi. It lost half a US cent and falling by four-and three-quarter cents against sterling.

Deal efforts BRITISH efforts to secure changes to the Brexit Withdrawal Agreement continued on Tuesday with further talks in Brussels. British Brexit Secretary Stephen Barclay and Attorney General Geoffrey Cox met with EU officials in a bid to change the proposed backstop mechanism. The backstop aims to prevent a hard border falling between Northern Ireland and the Republic if future trade talks between London and Brussels break down. It has become a sticking point in Westminster with pro-Brexit and DUP MPs, hampering Prime Minster Theresa May’s efforts to get her deal passed. It comes as May prepares to return to Parliament to put her Brexit deal to Parliament next Tuesday. If the deal fails to pass MPs will be asked whether they are willing to let Britain leave the EU without a deal. If they reject a no-deal outcome they will then be asked if the withdrawal date should be pushed back. Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn has said his party will back a second EU referendum. The party will continue to push for other options including a snap general election, Corbyn added.
Taking measures By Joe Gerrard BRITAIN’S ambassador to Spain has joined an expatriate group in welcoming measures approved by Spanish Ministers covering expatriates and tourists in a no-deal Brexit if London adopts similar measures. Simon Manley said the measures, passed by Royal Decree on Saturday, offered assurances to British expatriates and holidaymakers including for healthcare and residency. “I am pleased to see the Spanish government has announced a series of detailed Brexit contingency measures, published extensive advice to business and citizens, and has guaranteed the rights of EU nationals living in Britain,” the ambassador said. Richard Hill, vice president of the Brexpats in Spain advisory group, told Euro Weekly News the announcement was good news, and added he was ‘impressed’ with Spanish planning so far. “It is good news, but it should be said that it depends on the British government reciprocating for Spanish

Bankruptcies up by a fifth A TOTAL of 9,115 people and companies filed bankruptcy proceedings with Spanish courts in 2018, an increase of 20 per cent on the previous year according to official figures. Data from the General Council of the Judiciary (CGPJ) showed 5,842 of the cases came from companies and were filed in Commercial Courts. The number of business-related insolvencies rose by 9.1 per cent last year compared to 2017. A total of 3,273 of the cases were filed by individuals with no connection to business.

Budget deficit of €16 billion
Profits and losses SPANISH companies listed on the Madrid stock exchange have posted their results for last year, with those on the IBEX 35 index netting a combined total of almost €43 billion. The combined total for net profits was 0.1 per cent less than 2017 levels, pulled down by losses of more than €2.8 billion for the Naturgy energy company. The combined total for companies increased by 10.8 per cent from 2017 to 2018 without the Naturgy losses. International expansion, cost cutting and a combined increase in revenue of 4.1 per cent contributed to strong levels

Exchange rate changes between the euro and Latin American currencies hit the sales and profits of others, including telecommunications firm Telefonica and the Mapfre insurance company. The Santander bank made more than €7.8 billion in net profits, the largest amount netted by any company in the index. Oil company Repsol saw its net profits rise to more than €2.3 billion, an increase of 10.4 per cent compared to
2017 and the highest result for eight years. The increase was driven in part by rising crude oil prices. Energy firm Iberdrola made more than €3 billion in net profit in 2018, breaking all previous records. Fast food chain Telepizza posted €10.4 million in net losses, compared to a net profit of €31.8 million in 2017. The losses came as the firm increased sales by 14.5 per cent last year. Industrial chemical company SNIACE, which is not in the IBEX index but is on the stock market, posted losses of almost €5 million, 32 per cent more than 2017.
THE winner of the Sunday April 28 snap general election will have to find €16 billion to cover the deficit due to government budget plans being rejected. Finance Minister Maria Jesus Montero said the ruling left-leaning Partido Socialista (PSOE) budget’s failure to pass the Cortes would create a deficit of 2.4 per cent of economic output (GDP). The government was aiming to cut the deficit to 1.1 per cent of GDP but gaps in finances have risen because some spending measures have already passed, Montero added.

GROWTH: Deutsche Bank wants more customers. DEUTSCHE BANK said it is committed to increasing the number of its Spanish customers by 40 per cent to 900,000 by 2023. The German bank’s pledge comes after customer numbers grew in Spain between 2014 and 2018. Deutsche Bank reportedly considered pulling out of Spain during that time. Fernando Sousa, Deutsche Bank Spain’s general director,
said its company lending arm was likely to come up against ‘aggressive competition’ from rival banks. “We are seeking profitability rather than a bigger market share,” Sousa said. The general director for Spain added competition meant Deutsche Bank was seeking to differentiate itself to Spanish clients by offering specialised services to individuals and companies.
PUBLIC sector workers in Spain are set to see their salaries rise to €1,071.40 a month later this year, with government officials having approved the increase on Monday and the increase due to apply to roughly 40,000 staff members.
Data claim TELEFONICA President Jose Maria Alvarez-Pallete predicted users of electronic devices may eventually demand payment from companies to hand over personal data and added firms would have to continue self-regulating customer information use until the state regulates it.
Losses of €291 million SPANISH olive oil maker Deoleo has posted losses of €291 million and a fall in the value of assets of €200 million in 2018. The company reported a fall in sales of around 12.5 per cent to €605.5 million last year to Spain’s National Securities Market Commission (CNMW) regulator. Company share prices fell by 9.9 per cent to 7.5 cents after the news.
Deoleo said in a report on the results that it would maintain its commitment to producing quality goods. “The olive oil business is strongly shaped by a product offer in which the only incentive for purchases is low prices,” the company said. It comes as Deoleo replaced CEO Pierluigi Tosato with Miguel Iberrola Lopez. Tosato is set to stay on as a director.

ONCE again, Brexit rumours and developments have left the pound one of the market’s biggest movers, with the euro and US dollar steadier amid slowing economic outlooks. Euro EUR/GBP: Down from £0.87 to £0.85 EUR/USD: Down from $1.14 to $1.13 With Eurozone political jitters and uncertainties taking a backseat for the time being, the biggest news for euro investors over the past month has been uncertainty about the Eurozone’s economic outlook. Demand for the euro has been limp for most of the past month as concerns worsened that slowing global growth is having a worse impact on the Eurozone than previously expected.
MOVEMENT: Brexit rumours have meant mixed movement of currencies. German data has continued to print well below expectations. While the nation was able to avoid a recession in Q4 2018, data has been pointing towards a longer than expected economic slowdown for the Eurozone as a whole. So far, Eurozone data has not seen a notable uptick of any kind, keeping investors doubtful that the European Central Bank (ECB) will tighten Eurozone monetary policy any time soon. As the euro is still limp, investors are waiting for more optimistic Eurozone data before returning to the shared currency. German data will be particularly influential, and Friday’s German retail sales
data, unemployment stats and Markit manufacturing PMIs could offer the euro some support if they impress investors. Next week’s Eurozone growth estimates for Q4 and ECB press conference could influence the euro outlook if they surprise investors, and looking even further ahead, German factory data will continue to play an influential role in euro movement in the coming month. Pound GBP/EUR: Up from €1.14 to €1.16 GBP/USD: Up from $1.31 to $1.32 The past month has been a rollercoaster ride for the pound and UK markets in general. While at the start of the month
investors were lamenting a lack of progress in Brexit and fears the process was heading to an end without any firm outcome, market sentiment on Brexit has quickly turned around over the past couple of weeks. Despite a lack of fresh Brexit developments mid-February, speculation began to flare up that the UK government was leaning towards delaying the Brexit date past its current date of March 29. As bets of a delay rose, no-deal Brexit fears lightened and the pound strengthened. This week, sterling surged further as the UK government finally confirmed there could be a vote for an option of ex-
tending the process, if parliament continues to vote against its Brexit plan. Markets are anxious a no-deal Brexit remains on the table and this could lead to a sterling plunge if uncertainty persists throughout March. However, if UK parliament votes in favour of the government’s plan or in favour of a delay, the pound could sturdy as no-deal fears would lighten. US Dollar USD/GBP: Down from £0.76 to £0.75 USD/EUR: Remained at €0.87 Unsurprising US data, a more cautious Federal Reserve and developments in US-China trade developments have made investors hesitant to keep buying safe haven currencies like the US dollar. As a result, the dollar’s movement over the past month has been mixed. The Federal Reserve has indicated it expects the US economy to be impacted by the global economic slowdown. As a result, if US data falls short of expectations over the coming month, the dollar could be in for losses versus its rivals. The most influential data will be factory and growth stats.

LEAPY LEE SAYS IT OTHERS THINK IT ‘POLITICIANS come and go, but governments go on forever.’ Didn’t this recent quote hit the nail squarely on the appendage? As I have observed in this blurb on a number of occasions, the whole political masquerade is merely an illusion. Because we freely elect our politicians, we are under the almost laughable impression that we also in some way control our own future. Ha! Pure naïve bunkum. We are all players in a subversive system implemented by the shadowy billionaires who are our true masters. A preconceived plan to keep us all happy and firmly convinced that our democracy and ‘freedom’ are so important to us they are ultimately worth dying for. The truth is, the more chaotic and precarious our societies become, the more the money manipulators like it. Keeps us all nicely occupied ya see. I was recently speaking to a member of the Home Office and asked him if a newly-elected government made any difference to the workings of his department. With a barely detectable smirk he told me that, apart from a few small ‘irritations’ at the outset, nothing changes at all, the department simply carries on just as before. In fact, he went on to say that many new

This is precisely what happens with the world’s faceless financiers; they simply carry on business as usual, irrespective of governments or politicians. And they all cover each other’s backs. der affair (which has gone mysteriously very quiet)? Did you honestly think the King of Saudi Arabia, (family worth an estimated 1.4 trillion dollars!) would have his position threatened in any way by the actions of these assassins; even though, in my opinion, he almost certainly instigated the whole unsavoury affair himself?
Why not? Because he’s in league with the true rulers of the planet, as any leader of that oilsoaked country of corruption will always be. Murder means nothing to them. These people are a law unto themselves, an elite ‘club’ of secrecy and subterfuge who don’t care what government or dictator happens to be in power, just as long as they don’t threaten their own exalted positions. Among the many disruptions to society these faceless few revel in war, it’s a wonderful source of income and keeps the participants thoroughly occupied and out of their hair. They are no doubt also revelling in all the Brexit Bull, which is also keeping enormous numbers of the peasants extremely busy. It’s all a charade and they are the all-powerful puppet masters. Their aim is to make us fear life itself. They want us to hate ‘the other.’ They love confusion. They want us to practise aggression. They seek to divide us all. With division comes chaos and chaos is their greatest ally. And there aint a durn thing either you or I can do about it. On a lighter note ta rah! I see the pests of summer are already arriving. Consumers don’t know what they want, warns Terence Kennedy THE bravest t-shirt I ever saw was sported by a brash Aussie lass: ‘So many men, so little time.’Perhaps today it needs a slight amendment; So many toys… How did we get locked into the ruinous cycle (for the planet’s resources and our bank balances) of constantly wanting, needing, the shiniest new gadgets? I blame that first iPhone back in 2007. Granted, the rot had begun before that, with providers herding us into two-year replacement contracts leaving us with drawers of dead phones. But unlike today’s stalled innovation, each new model did often boast a huge techno-leap over its quickly-obsolete predecessor. T h e n c a m e t h e i P h o n e ’s r e lentless annual upgrade cycle, surrounded by showbiz hype to rival the second coming, and yea verily did Samsung and Moto and the rest join in and be-
fore we knew it, those with more money than sense were changing their phones every year. I don’t know what circles you move in, but I’ve only ever met one person who absolutely had to buy a new car each year: an American ‘realtor’ or estate agent who insisted other Americans wouldn’t buy property from someone driving last year’s hopelessly outdated model. Ye t p h o n e s l a s t p o t e n t i a l l y longer than cars; no moving
parts, just slap in a new battery every few years and in theory they could go on forever. The ecological cost of our upgrade frenzy has been devastating in terms of the raw materials, not least the so-called ‘conflict minerals’ whose proceeds help fuel the misery of African wars and corruption. The good news is that the tide is finally turning. A UK survey back in 2013 found users were changing their phones every 20 months. Now it’s 29 months and rising.
A random sampling from the world’s 1.5 billion smartphone users recently found 54 per cent intending to keep their phones until they’re finished. A p p l e ’s r e c e n t p r o f i t d i p comes as its top-end phone hits more than €1,500, more than I p a i d f o r m y c u r r e n t c a r, a n d triple the price of my desktop computer containing at least as much top technology and 10 times the materials, which is quite simply nuts. Samsung’s flagships aren’t far behind, yet half that price spent on a ‘lesser ’ brand like Honor or OnePlus buys almost as much technology for your pocket in today’s cutthroat market, and I recently picked up a basic emergency phone in our local hypermarket for a princely €12. Perhaps a famous philosopher ’s warning should be heeded: ‘You can never get enough of what you don’t need to make you happy.’
YES I realise I do need to get out more as I confess to logging every charge I give my devices. But my 2014 Nexus tablet has now had over 500 charges yet still runs for days. Contrary to our ‘buywashed’ beliefs, the batteries in modern devices will not generally be exhausted after two years, and certainly not one. A friend who is an average smartphone user is still going strong with the original battery in her five-year-old iPhone. If she does need a replacement, a battery costs less than €70 to install. Although manufacturers don’t shout about it, most other flagship phones can be refurbished back to ‘asnew’ for a mere fraction of the price of the newest model. So why wouldn’t you?

What will you give up for Lent? LAURA PENN ‘PENN TO PAPER’ IF you were brought up a good Catholic girl like me (don’t snigger) you will know that Lent is a period of fasting and abstinence (Google that word) in the run-up to Easter. It lasts 40 days replicating the period of time Jesus spent in the desert doing battle with the devil. The actual ‘rules’ of Lent are that anyone aged 18 or over must abstain from eating meat on Ash Wednesday and each Friday in Lent and everyone aged 18 - 59 must fast on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday, (the Friday before Easter Sunday). As a child we were encouraged to give something up for Lent which is a practice that has stuck with me through life. These days it’s less of a religious observation for me and more of a personal challenge to see if I can sacrifice one of my joys in life for almost six weeks.
LENT CHALLENGE: Would you be able to give up alcohol for 40 days? I was amused to see that, according to an online survey, the top most popular things to give up are: School (11,330 tweets) Chocolate (8,916) Twitter (8,171) Swearing (6,733) Alcohol (5,820) Soda (5,087) Social networking (4,087) Sweets (3,860) Could you go without Social Media for six weeks???
This year I am refraining from drinking alcohol. I am not kidding. I did it once, I can do it again! Mind you the first time was a bit of a mistake. I just made a casual remark that I was thinking of giving up drink for Lent and the reaction of unmitigated mirth from my chums made the highly-developed stubborn side of me prove that I could do it. I even went an extra week! Mistakenly I thought Lent ended on Easter Sunday. Hence, I was sitting in bar on East-
er Saturday evening waiting for the second-hand to click over to midnight with a large glass of red on the table. It was only when I explained why I was waiting that a tearful friend pointed out that Lent ended on Palm Sunday the week before. The tears were her laughing! One year I gave up potatoes. Think about it: mash, roasties, crisps, chips none touched my lips for weeks. Hence the photo of me lusting over a sack of unpeeled spuds. On Palm Sunday that particular year my delightful chum Hugh Carville appeared with a plate of every kind of cooked potato for me to enjoy. Never has a chip tasted so good. I have considered abstaining from prawns - but seeing as I hate the creepy baby’s toes, this is hardly in the spirit of the challenge. The only thing that I have never considered giving up is chocolate. I hope at my age I know my own limitations. There is nothing worse than starting a venture with the solid certain knowledge that you will fail. I would love to know what (if any-

This week the A-Z of Mallorca reaches the letter ‘I’ for - Ironman Mallorca is a triathlon event that is held annually starting in Alcudia in the north of the island. It is also known as the Ironman 70.3 or Half Ironman and it is organised by the World Triathlon Corporation. The ‘70.3’ refers to the total distance in miles (113.0km) covered in the race, consisting of a 1.2-mile (1.9km) swim, a 56-mile (90km) bike ride, and a 13.1-mile (21.1km) run. Finish times range from under four hours by elite level athletes to eight-and-a-half hours which is the cut off time. Hundreds of athletes from all over the world travel to Mallorca to compete in the challenge which this year will be held on May 11. CONSULAR MATTERS THE Danish handball team have previously been the best in Europe on two occasions, and won gold as Olympic champions in the 2016 Rio de Janeiro games, but they have never won a Handball World Cup before. However, a few weeks ago, Denmark proved that their team is a steamroller by crushing Norway and winning the 2019 Handball World Championship for the first time in their history. Denmark played at home and their team members entered the field convinced this was their day. The team not only had a whole sports pavilion with bleachers crowded with fans willing to support them until they were exhausted, but also with the whole country behind them. A totally dedicated country which began celebrating their anticipated victory from the second half, standing in the Herning pavilion and at home, watching the game on TV. The Danish steamroller the participation of this sport among the Danish young people living on the coast. The agreement will allow young people to approach the handball team in Malaga, and to become members of the club as well as the creation of an association of young fans linked to the team. This is a clear example in which sport and diplomacy can and should be of service to society. Society becomes more and more competitive each day, but we must base the education of its young people on effort and honesty and ultimately try to be the best version of ourselves that we can. Congratulations to Denmark on your victory, champions of the world 2019!

Peter’s odd and curious world by Peter Purvey AS this is my first article for EWN, a small introduction to new readers may be appropriate. I have been writing a monthly column for the RTN for over a year, about a combination of things I have read or heard which piques my interest or curiosity, and best describes the odd and curious brain I was born with. Most of the stories I relate are largely autobiographical. I have travelled extensively in the USA and Australasia, and have experienced hotel fires, earthquakes, met people and been in situations you would have loved (or hated!) I read Time each week, and Astronomy, Scientific American and Discover monthly so I keep my interests up-todate on many fronts. I hope my writings will entertain, amuse and sometimes give you food for thought. For my first contribution I offer ‘Memories,’ from an experience last summer which I hope to repeat this year. Memories are made of this...
MAKING MEMORIES: Food with a view at Arenal beach. While enjoying an early evening meal at my favourite little restaurant ‘Calpe Playa’ on Arenal beach, the thought came over me; at that particular moment in time there was nowhere else in the world I would rather be. With a panoramic view from the Ifach to (almost) the setting sun, I watched people coming off the beach carrying the remains of a day’s pleasure; strollers, many with their pets, taking a paseo, looking for somewhere to eat. I
began to think, If I wasn’t here, where would I like to be? The association of food with location was uppermost and I began to think of food with a view. The revolving restaurant high over Las Vegas as the sun sets and the desert all around changes colour would be high on my list. The food’s not bad either. I don’t usually eat oysters, but three locations where I made a pig of myself are: an evening boat trip round Sydney Bay where the oysters are some of the
Why are we conned? Mike Senker In my opinion Views of a Grumpy Old Man WHY do I feel like the unluckiest punter in the world sometimes? As you all know, because everything is done online now and you have to give your email details to book flights, hotels, car hire etc, the companies keep all your information and then start sending you offers. This is OK except none of the offers ever apply to me. I never qualify for any of them. Flights are to places I d o n ’t w a n t t o g o a n d c a r h i r e i s a t a time of year I don’t want to travel. The same applies to hotels. They dangle carrots all the time. PayPal send me stuff for discounts I don’t want or need. I never get free delivery on Amazon because although it’s offered, when you check you find out you have to spend €50 and my order comes to €20 and I’m not going to spend €30 more to save €4. Not one offer I am sent have I ever been able to use. So, what I’m doing
now is unsubscribing to all the mailing lists so I don’t get the hump any more. On the subject of offers and car hire my pal asked me if I knew any decent car hire places here and, as he was busy, could I look for one for him. Wow, what a minefield of con artists are out there. I saw one for about €50 for a week. I thought it was silly cheap so I delved a bit deeper. Lo and behold it was an impossible price. Firstly, you had to pay for a full tank of fuel and bring it back empty and if you don’t there’s no refund so that could cost you an extra €20 - 30. Then there is the extra insurance because you’re not covered for this or that. This is a real killer because they hold back about €1,000 on your credit card. When I read some reviews for this particular company so many people said they had a problem getting their deposit back because this firm came up with reasons like there was a scratch that wasn’t there before and as the person hiring hadn’t had the foresight to take pictures of the car beforehand, they couldn’t prove otherwise. Why does everything have to be such a chore? Yeah, I know, once you find the right one it’s all fine, but why do we have to be conned all the time?

finest in the world; New Orleans with dinner and oysters at the revolving rooftop restaurant is a must, and in San Antonio on the river walk. The river snakes its way across the town deep in a self-carved gorge with river taxis, shops and restaurants serving the most mouthwatering oysters. Once, in San Diego, I invited a dear old lady friend of mine to dinner. To my embarrassment she completely ate and drank me under the table on a feast of
oysters, Champagne, Guinness and red wine. I slept through the most severe earthquake that night, dreaming only of pink elephants climbing the wall. A few odd items... • I read that a bacterium which can ingest plastic and turn it into a harmless chemical residue has been found by accident. (With plastic waste much in the news these days, I hope it has a voracious appetite). • The oldest known footprints have been found in South China. The 546million-year-old fossil imprints represent the earliest known record of an animal with legs. (Not one of us! We weren’t around for ages.) • The Earth has been given a new geological Chapter named ‘The Meghalayan Age.’ ( named for the Countess of Sussex?) This covers a period from 4,260 BC to the present. • The beginning was marked by a dreadful drought which saw the end of a number of civilisations across the planet. IN the interests of balanced journalism may I point out an error of exaggeration in the report by Joe Gerrard on Migrant arrivals in issue 1753? On page nine he reports: ‘This January’s figure is almost three times higher than that of the same time last year.’ Using the two figures of 4,104 and 1,396 here’s the error. Divide the second into the first and you get 2.94; almost three I agree. But it means the latest figure is not three times more but three times AS MUCH. His statement is an exaggeration. To explain further, 4,104 is 2,708 more than 1,396 and that is nearly double the first figure. So he can truthfully say EITHER: January’s figure is almost three times as much as last year’s OR: January’s figure is almost two times more than last year’s The corruption of the two is an exaggeration that if true at three times more would mean the latest figure would be about 1,396 + 3x1,396 = 5,584. That is the clear exaggeration in his writings. This mistake is sadly very common with journalists which undermines their credibility if they can’t report correctly proportional increases in numbers. SPAIN’S announcement on guaranteeing the status of legally registered British expatriates in a no-deal Brexit is welcome, but now is not the time to stop preparing. Madrid said the some 300,000 legally registered expatriates will continue to enjoy the same rights they have now, including on healthcare. British officials including Ambassador Simon Manley have welcomed the move. So have expatriate groups and no doubt many expatriates themselves were also encouraged. But speaking to one senior member of Brexpats in Spain, we were told that concern remains over those expatriates who have are not registered. Brexpats in Spain Vice President Richard Hill told Euro Weekly News that regardless of whether Britain leaves with or without a deal on Friday March 29, getting registered was essential. If Britain leaves with a deal the new measures will no longer be needed as they are already covered by the Withdrawal Agreement itself. If a no-deal Brexit comes to pass then, providing Britain makes similar guarantees to Spanish citizens there, legally registered expatriates will be protected. But being legally registered is the catch. Spanish authorities have worked tirelessly to accommodate those expatriates getting their residency ahead of Brexit day, including fast-tracking applications and making more resources available to cope with the mounting backlog. If you have not begun the residency process then we advise that you do not gamble on them being as accommodating after Brexit. A little hassle now could save you a lot more later.

Rise in resale property prices By Julie Day JUST by taking a look at w h a t ’s g o i n g o n a r o u n d you in your neighbourhood is enough to realise that the property market is active once more. E s t a t e a g e n t s a r e b u s y, new construction is taking place and people are enquiring about property for sale and for rent. This movement is also backed up by the figures. Monthly Figures published by Fotocasa have revealed that the average price of a second-hand property in Spain registered at €1,876 per square metre in January this year; an increase of 0.4 per cent from the previous month. This slight increase is characteristic of the trend for the whole of 2018, which saw prices go up every month at a rate of between 0.3 and 0.9 per cent. The most significant price hike took place bet w e e n A p r i l a n d M a y, when prices went up 1.3 per cent from month to month. Annual When compared with statistics for January 2018, resale property 12 months later was 7.7 per cent more expensive, with prices showing a year-onyear rise for the last 28 months. In fact, every month for the last seven months, y e a r- o n - y e a r p r i c e s h a v e registered a rise in prices of more than 7 per cent each time. Statistics have shown h o w e v e r, t h a t t h e l a rg e s t increases in the price of resale property have been registered in Madrid, Cataluña and the Islands; elsewhere they are going up at a more moderate rate. Nevertheless, buyers are still paying 36.5 per cent less for a second-hand

Madrid saw the biggest rise in prices at +1.6 per cent, followed by Navarra (+1.4 per cent), the Balearic Islands (+1.1 per cent) and Galicia (+0.5 per cent). At the other end of the scale, prices fell in six regions from December 2018 to January 2019, with the biggest drops in prices registered in Cataluña (-0.7 per cent), the Valencia Region (-0.4 per cent) and Castilla-La Mancha (-0.3 per cent). Madrid is the most expensive region for resale property, with an average price of €2,930 per square
metre, followed by Pais Vasco, the Balearic Islands and Cataluña. Second-hand property is the least expensive in Extremadura at €1,109 per square metre, followed by Castilla-La Mancha and Murcia.
Provinces With regards to the evolution of second-hand property prices by provinces, prices went up in 27 of them from December 2018 to January 2019, with the largest increase in Lugo at +1.7 per

This means people with intolerant views who set out to make life a misery for those they disapprove of, can instantly be identified and publicly shamed. And rightly so, as was the case recently of a woman who runs a t a x c o n s u l t a n c y o ff i c e i n R u s sianville, Indiana. Nancy Fivecoate, of Carter Tax Service, told a recently-married lesbian couple to sling their hook when they asked her to prepare a joint tax return. Her reason for turning Bailey and Samantha Brazzel away, was that same-sex marriage ran contrary to her religious beliefs. Normally a case like this would wind up in court, but in this part of the world there are no legal protections for gay people, t h a n k s t o t h e s t a t e ’s R e l i g i o u s Freedom Restoration Act which

They automatically shriek ‘persecution!’ In 2015, Jonathan Brennan suffered similar bigotry when a print shop in Drogheda, Ireland - Beulah Print and Design - refused to print invitations for his upcoming same-sex union with his partner John Kierans, because it too disapproved of gay marriage. I t ’s n o s u r p r i s e t h a t i n t h i s case, the store owners argued that they were being persecuted for their religious beliefs. Fortunately, Ireland does not allow discrimination of this sort, and the owners of business were ordered this month to pay Bren-
nan damages of €2,500 by the Workplace Relations Commission (WRC). I’m delighted that in addition to the fine, Beulah Print and Design were exposed to criticism on social media. On its Facebook page, which attracted many angry comments, the outfit had the temerity to say: ‘ We a r e a b s o l u t e l y c l e a r, a n d have maintained from the outset, that we did not discriminate against our customer in turning down the designing and printing of a same-sex wedding invitation. Therefore, we reject the findings of the WRC...’ Feel free to disagree with me, but I firmly believe that if people set out to make a living by prov i d i n g a p u b l i c s e r v i c e , t h a t ’s precisely what they should do. And if they feel that some of their customers are unworthy of receiving equal treatment, perhaps they should find alternative vocations which don’t bring them into contact with the general public. Becoming nomadic goatherders in a remote region of Namibia may suit them better.

It aims to improve the quality of the air we breathe, to maximise the use of resources used for passenger transportation and to reduce global warming. The highest standard is attributed to a car which maximises the reduction of its own pollutants and greenhouse gases, and at the same time, operates at minimised
ROAD TEST by Nick Fletcher MINI is a global motoring brand name dating back 60 years, and latest versions still offer a touch of retro styling while delivering everyday practicality and a lot of driving fun. The Mini line-up has been simplified in recent months, though many are likely to find it still rather complex especially as there are several options and packages in the mix. Prices start at €18,648 (£16,190) for a three-door model, though many will opt for the more practical fivedoor variant which is priced from €19,454 (£16,890). There are several petrol engines and a diesel, and while a six-speed manual gearbox is standard, there is a sevenspeed automatic option. The entry-level five-door Classic model featured is quite wellequipped with standard kit including auto lights and wipers, digital radio, Bluetooth, infotainment screen with rotary control, LED lights and airconditioning. GTI gets a credible four stars, BMW’s X1 2.0d and the Mercedes Benz A200 are both awarded three stars, the Ford Fiesta 1.0 EcoBoost is rated as two stars in its latest guise, and a one-star rating is given to the Audi A7 50 TDI, the Volvo XC40 T5 and the Subaru Outback 2.5. Three cars - the VW Golf 1.6TDI, the FIAT Panda 1.0 and the previous level Ford Fiesta 1.0 EcoBoost - get zero-star ratings. and this does give rear occupants improved head and legroom, and there is the added convenience of rear doors and a tail date. The car seats four adults easily though the rear seat is quite cramped for a fifth. Boot space has been improved and is now 278 litres, adequate for normal shopping needs and the backs of the rear seats can be adjusted to make
the boot area a more boxy shape. The dashboard, dominated by a large circular screen, has a smart look which underpins the cabin’s quality ambience. Underway, this Mini proves to be smooth, quiet and responsive and precise steering and firm suspension help give composed cornering while retaining decent ride quality. The nimble driving dynamics give the Mini more of a fun factor than most rivals, though competition is keen in this sector and includes strong rivals such as the Volkswagen Polo and Audi A1. Even so, the Mini One Classic still scores highly as a practical hatchback with the added bonus of a very cool image.

Race for the MotoGP title THE 2019 MotoGP season kicks off at the weekend with the Qatar Grand Prix. HAVING knocked Real Madrid out of the Copa del Rey last week, Barcelona went on to possibly eliminate their greatest rivals from La Liga title race, with a 1-0 victory at the Santiago Bernabeu on Saturday. The pressure was on Madrid, not only to make up for their defeat in the Copa, but also to reduce the ninepoint gap between them and La Liga’s leaders Barca. But instead, a great chip from Croatian midfielder, Ivan Rakitic, earned a victory for dominant Barcelona, taking them 12 points ahead of Los Blancos.
