Pig sick about farm plans By Cathy Elelman AN Albox couple are furious about plans to reopen a pig farm near their home. Paul Griffin and Luisa Fernandez claim the associated smell, noise and flies will be a stress-inducing nuisance and will devalue their property, which has been in Luisa’s family for five generations. The couple acknowledge the property was a piggery from the 1980’s up to some six years ago, but told the Euro Weekly News it looks likely to be sig-
nificantly bigger this time and will now be an intensive breeding operation. Other local residents also oppose the project, Paul and Luisa say, 350 people having signed their petition to stop it opening. Jenny Spear is one of the couple’s neighbours. Initially ‘nice little pig farm’ as before, alarm bells went off when she realised it was being enlarged. “From everything I’ve been told it’s not going to make the people living close to it very happy because there are going to be polluting smells and the
pigs are going to make a horrendous noise because they’re going to be battery,” a worried Jenny commented. Albox Town Hall Secretary Eva Cano insists the piggery plans are all in order. She told the Euro Weekly News it has the necessary permits and authorisation from the Andalucia regional government, which says everything in terms of land use, documentation and compliance with current regulations is correct. She did made it clear the council will check the farm activities are in line with the pig
breeding operation and works set out in the approved project. The ‘bad luck’ for Paul and Luisa is their home is close to land classified as ‘no urbanisable,’ Eva said, which she points out “is for agricultural, forestry or livestock use, hence this pig farm has its licence. “Anyone who lives very close to no urbanisable land has to be aware about the nuisances from land which is not for residential use.” Paul and Luisa have sought advice from groups lobbying against intensive pig farms.

NEWS EXTRA €90,000 fraud op POLICE have made five arrests and are investigating another 41 people in relation to an Almeria-registered company suspected of evading Social Security payments and of wrongful collection of benefits, totalling more than €90,000.
Sea rescue MARITIME RESCUE picked up 56 people trying to reach the Spanish coast in an inflatable dinghy which was letting in water in the Alboran Sea. All 56, among them three children, were taken to Almeria port.

Crime wave arrests GUARDIA CIVIL arrested three men in their 20’s in connection with a series of crimes in Roquetas de Mar. The launch last August of operation Estribera II came on the back of several reports of thefts of mopeds and other items of value from properties, which were then sold off privately or online. The modus operandi appeared very similar to the activities of a criminal gang at the centre of a 2017 Guardia investigation into 60 crimes in all, which resulted in eight arrests and the seizure of stolen vehicles. In the latest operation officers focused their attention on several suspects, particularly an individual identified a s CT G , w h o h a d s e rve d time following the original Estribera investigation. Keeping a discreet track on his movements, officers reported it lo o k e d lik e h e w as ta king s te ps to make sure he wasn’t being followed, and was hiding stolen items and vehicles in his garage. The suspect made a fairly dramatic getaway whenthe Guardia first tried to arrest him. Officers indicated the car he was travelling in as a passenger should pull over, but instead the driver

of the speeding car and another man named as ATG, and were questioning a youngster believed to have collaborated on a vehicle theft. Three stolen vehicles were recovered during the investigations.

Gabriel, known to his f r i ends and f am i l y as Little Fish, went missing from Las Hortichuelas near Nijar at the end of Febr uar y l ast year sparking a huge search involving thousands of people. Two weeks later police charged the 43-year-old girlfriend of Gabriel’s father with killing him when they found his lifeless body in the boot of her car. The date for Ana Julia Quezada’s trial is due t o be announced soon.

Jobless up ALMERIA registered a small increase in unemployment in F e b r u a r y, t h e m o n t h e n d i n g with an extra 180 jobless, or a rise of 0.31 per cent. Employment Ministry figures put the total number of unemployed in the province at 57,706, 1,214 less than this time last year.
Drug arrests POLICE controls and inspections of leisure outlets in Almeria City resulted in three arrests on drug charges. Officers found 34 doses of cocaine in one establishment, and seized cocaine, hashish and 12 tablets of a synthetic drug during checks on passers-by and vehicles.
Hash haul TWO arrests and the seizure of more than 400 marihuana plants and 33 grammes of cannabis resin was the result of a police investigation into an illegal indoor hash plantation in a house in El Ejido. There was also an illegal connection to the power supply.

World beater THIS beach in northern Spain has come fourth in TripAdvisor’s ranking of the world’s best coastlines. La Concha Beach, in the Basque city of San Sebastian, beat others in Jamaica, Sicily, Hawaii and the Seychelles in the travel site’s 25 Best Beaches in the World ranking. It came behind Baia do Sancho in Brazil, Cuba’s Varadero and Eagle Beach on the Caribbean island of Aruba. Ses Illetes, on Formentera in the Balearic Islands,
came 14th in the ranking. La Concha beach is nestled in the bay of the same name to the west of the River Urumea on the coast by San Sebastian. It covers an area of around 54,000 square metres and has an average length of 1,350 metres and an average width of 40 metres. It is a sandy beach which faces outwards onto shallow waters which give way to the Atlantic. A rock formation known as Santa Clara Island sits roughly in the
middle of the bay which itself lies between the mountains of Igueldo and Urgull. The beach’s promenade is decorated with the Barandilla de la Concha, art nouveau railings built by Juan Rafael Alday in 1910 and opened by King Alfonso XIII in 1916. The bay is also home to the old Damen coastal gun battery which is now a museum and library. La Concha was named one of the 12 Treasures of Spain in 2007.

Suspect seeds GUARDIA CIVIL found 30 metal containers of contraband pumpkin seeds hidden in a passenger ’s luggage during a routine check at Almeria port on passengers disembarking from the ferry from Nador in Morocco. The man from Burriana in Castellon had told officers he had nothing to declare.
Thief caught red-handed GUARDIA CIVIL caught a thief red-handed breaking into a property in Roquetas de Mar. Officers went to the property to investigate following a call from a security company reporting the property’s alarm had gone off and there was a hooded individual inside. When they arrived they found the front door was broken and there were lights on indoors. Hearing a noise from the upper floor, they shouted out a warning that they were there before rushing
upstairs. The officers came across the intruder in one of the bedrooms trying to force up a blind to get away. There was quite a struggle when they detained him. The suspect hit one of the officers, causing injuries for which he needed medical treatment. The Guardia identified the wouldbe thief as a 30-year-old with no fixed abode, charging him with breaking and entering and resisting arrest.

Grand plans for city ALMERIA City Council has announced plans for an ambitious new City of Culture. Mayor Ramon FernandezPacheco said the aim of the €5 million project, dubbed ‘Mirror facing the sea,’ was to create an up-to-date home for the Almeria City orchestras, bands and music groups, modernise the Maestro Padilla Auditorium and construct a new building for rehearsals. Describing it as “new, exciting and ambitious,” the mayor said

the project included improvements to surrounding gardens and parking between the beach and the Las Familias Park, and would integrate the city and developing of the Veca de Aca area. He explained the council is collaborating with the College of Architects to find “the best proposal and architectural solution” to harmonise the area covering around 20,000sqm. They have launched a competition to find the best idea.

High-speed chase arrest

Be prepared LOCAL authorities have been finding out how to put together municipal emergency plans. Experts from the Andalucia regional government’s Civil Protection Emergency Services met with representatives from Lubrin, Antas, Taberno, Carboneras, Arboleas and Vera councils last week to advise on the procedure for drawing up their plans, commonly known as PEMs.
The idea is for municipalities to set out, approve and implement a plan which gives greater protection of persons and property within their area of responsibility and in fulfilling their responsibilities. An action protocol has now been established, under which a local authority, the provincial council and the Andalucia emergency services establish a document which is part technical and part policy,
which serves as the basis for drawing up a PEM. Commenting after the informative meeting held at Vera Local Police headquarters, Vera mayor Feliz Lopez underlined the importance of the municipal emergency plans ‘for knowing how to act in the event of catastrophes or natural disasters, and for being organised and prepared to deal with emergency situations.’

GUARDIA CIVIL arrested a young man on charges of reckless driving and resisting arrest following a car chase in Vera. Officers were carrying out checks on vehicles and their occupants in the La Ribina area, when they noticed a car approaching at high speed. They indicated to the driver he should pull over, but instead he put his foot down and headed straight for the officers, who had to jump out the way to avoid being run down. A patrol car immediately went after the car, which made off at great speed, swerving over into the oncoming lane more than once, and eventually coming off the road and slamming into olive trees. Two of the passengers, including the driver, fled on foot. Officers detained a third as he was getting out the car and found two others sitting in the back, one an underage teenager. A short time later officers managed to track down the driver and owner of the vehicle, who the Guardia identified as 27year-old HN from Vera. They also reported he tested positive for alcohol.
Advances on rail link THERE is news of another step forward on the MurciaAlmeria high-speed rail link. The ADIF Railway Infrastructure Administrator announced approval on the allocation of the consultation and technical assistance service contracts on two sections of the line running through Sorbas and Lucainena de la Torre, with a total budget of €5.6 million. UTE gets the €2.8 million contract for the 17.8-kilometre Los Arejos-Nijar stretch of line, while the €2.8 million contract for the 25.5-kilometre Nijar-Rio Andarax section goes to TPF Getinsa Euroestudios.

GUARDIA CIVIL seized 20 kilos of contraband tobacco in Pulpi. Officers discovered the unsealed packets of granulated tobacco in the boot of a car during a vehicle inspection, their checks revealing it was illegal.
Museum first CONSTRUCTION has started on the future Almeria ecological history museum in the village of Alcudia de Monteagud, the first project of its kind in Europe, which is being financed under the Almeria Council Provincial Plans.
Overturned THE A-7 dual carriageway which goes through Vera was partially blocked in the early hours of Saturday when a lorry overturned, injuring a 28 and 57-year-old man, who were taken to Huercal-Overa Hospital.
TOP GEAR: The Peña Anonymous carnival club was named Carnival 2019 winner for best costumes and for fabulous choreography. IT was a weekend of full-on carnival colour in HuercalOvera, with a large turnout for the junior and adult processions. The Peña Anonymous carnival dance group scooped top prize this year for best costumes and for putting on a fabulously choreographed performance. Culture Councillor Belen Martinez praised the high standard of all the competi-
tion entrants, commenting: “Yet another year the originality of the spectacular, the participation and the number of people coming out onto the streets to enjoy our carnival, many of them from different areas of the province, have been even greater.” There’s more carnival fun this weekend, this time in Overa, the event to be filmed by Canal Sur TV for the
progamme Andalucia de Fiesta. Overa’s Mascaras de Peloteros is listed in the regional Intangible Heritage Atlas, this very particular procession taking place at 5.30pm on Sunday. Tomorrow (Friday) there will be a junior procession beginning at 5pm, and on Saturday it will be the turn of the grown-ups to take to the streets at 7pm, followed by further celebrations.

Food fair attracts record crowd THIS year’s Gastro Andalucia food fair attracted a record number of visitors, Vera Council reported. The local authority put the total number going along to the event at more than 20,000, with sales of some 30,000 tickets for tapas and drinks in the 3,000sqm exhibition area. Vera Trade Councillor Francisca Garcia described the fair as a ‘complete success,’ adding, “We are super pleased with how it went, as we had a massive turnout and we are getting congratulations from all over.” Vera mayor Felix Lopez highlighted the contribution the event made to the local economy, particularly at a time of year which can be somewhat slow for wining and dining businesses. “Our aim is to support and boost trade in the area, and break the seasonal nature of the influx of tourists to our municipality, expanding the offer of activities during off-peak periods,” the mayor said. This, the third edition of the fair, was held over the l a s t w e e k e n d i n F e b r u a r y a n d f e a t u re d c o o k i n g demonstrations, performances by folklore groups and bands and gourmet food themed conferences, among other activities.

Online search favourite MOJACAR is an online search favourite, according to a tourism portal study. The Sensacion Rural and o10media investigation of Google searches for Spanish tourist towns and villages ranks Mojacar as the third most popular last year, with 365,000 hits. Other Almeria towns making it into the 2018 top 10 for online searches for Andalucia destinations were Carboneras, ranked eighth, and Aguadulce, which was 10th. The analysis looked at tourism-related searches, for example linked to accommodation, restaurants and places of interest.

Home for bottle cap octopus THE Coastal Cleaners Andalucia bottle cap octopus has found a forever home, the organisation has announced. Having displayed the mural, dubbed David, throughout February, and received a lot of positive feedback, Neptuno’s Mojacar has decided to keep it. In return the popular Mojacar Playa restaurant is contributing funds to CAA, which will go towards art materials for up-
coming childrens’ activities. The mural is the creation of CCA founder Suzanne Parmenter-Phillips, who chose the name David for two reasons. First because it represents the fight of a small group against a giant problem, but also because it reminds her of her hero David Attenborough, who along with the Blue Planet team has inspired millions to get involved with beach cleans.

Great rhythm A BRILLIANT performance by the Vera Rhythmic Gymmastics Club juniors earned the team a silver medal at last weekend’s Marbella International Grand Prix. The team’s near faultless routine earned them 10.95 points, just three-10ths behind the eventual champions, Club Algeciras. Plant power MORE than 35,000 plants and trees will be planted in 55 different municipalities, creating in excess of 2,000 days of gardening work, under an Almeria Council plan. Provincial Environment Deputy Maria del Mar Lopez unveiled Plan Savia 2019 last week, explaining this was the third round of the initiative, billed as a sustainable way to create and improve green areas, and which this time will see €360,000 worth of plants and trees shared between municipalities including Antas, Arboleas, Garrucha, Huercal-Overa, Lubrin, Macael, Olula del Rio, Pulpi, Roquetas de Mar, Seron, Sorbas, Taberno, Turre, VelezRubio, Vera and Zurgena. Species set to be planted in gardens and squares, on avenues and paths, and in other public areas, include palms, carob trees, cypress, olive trees, pines, mulberry, daises, hibiscus, roses and oleanders.
Big day MOJACAR marked Andalucia Day with various local council-organised events. The celebrations got going at noon with the traditional flag-raising ceremony in the town hall square, Mayor Rosa Maria Cano doing the honours, accompanied by local councillors. The municipal band performed the Andalucia anthem, before entertaining the crowd with more toetapping pasodobles and other melodies. Other highlights of the day included the release of 500 biodegradable green and white balloons, the colour of the Andalucia flag, from Plaza Nueva, and a giant paella in Plaza del Parterre, around 800 people tucking into a serving. The day’s celebrations were brought to a close with performances by young students from the municipal dance and music schools in the Multiple Uses Centre.

Drones to go ahead NIJAR Council has approved municipal regulations allowing the Local Police to use drones. The local authority said the drones would be used for greater vigilance and public safety, in the event of accidents or disasters, and to help prevent crime. Mayor Esperanza Perez said the move would mean
‘greater security for farmers in the control of our extensive area dedicated to cultivation,’ and would be an essential tool in cases of disappearances or searches, ‘which will allow us to multiply exponentially the radius and capacity of Local Police and Civil Protection action.’
The mayor said drones would also be useful in keeping the municipality’s beaches safe and preventing drownings. The drones measure moves forward with the votes in favour of the Socialist Party and the United Left and the abstention of the Popular Party.

Green light STREET lights in Pulpi are going green. Much of the municipality’s public lighting will be updated and LED technology installed, principally in Pulpi town and San Juan de los Terreros, under the provincial government’s Exterior Lighting Energy Efficiency Improvement Project. Total investment in the works will be just short of €1 million. Of this, 80 per cent comes from the European Rural Development Fund under its Sustainable Growth Operational Growth Programme, 15 per cent from the Almeria Provincial Council, and 5 per cent from Pulpi Council funds.

Cycle connection CUEVAS DE ALMANZORA Council’s plans to create a cycle track connecting the municipality’s sports facilities looks good to go. The Andalucia regional government’s Agriculture, Fishing and Rural Development Department has awarded the local authority a subsidy of just short of €157,000 for the project. The subsidy is part of the planned assistance under the Junta’s LEADER Local Development Strategies, in this case for a project adding or improving infrastructure or facilities which favour non-motorised transport. The cycle track will be 2,685 metres long in all, divided into two different stretches. Cuevas mayor Antonio Fernandez said the track would unite local sports facilities in a “safe and sustainable” way.
Easter funding VERA Council has allocated €70,000 to the town’s Easter processions and other costs paid by the brotherhoods and associations which organise the events. “As a public institution Vera Council has among its responsibilities the promotion and development of cultural heritage, of which popular fiestas and traditions form a part,” commented Finance Councillor Alberto Clemente.

VICTIMS: Spain registered the highest amount between 2000 and 2018.
Terror deaths FROM all EU countries, Spain registered the highest amount of terrorism victims between 2000 and 2018, according to a study published this week. During the mentioned dates, the Black and White Book of Terrorism in Europe stated that 268 people died due to terrorist attacks carried out in Spain. Some of the victims were from Madrid’s train bombings back in 2004,
Islamic state attacks and also those carried out by ETA. France ranked in second place with 263 fatalities, followed by the United Kingdom with 212 victims. The study also showed that 1,115 Europeans had died from terrorist attacks in 30 countries around the world, with the United Kingdom lost 492 nationals, the highest number in Europe, followed by France with 181 deaths,
Germany (89), Italy (63) and Spain (49). Among the total number of Europeans killed in and outside Europe in terror attacks (1,868), 91.1 per cent lost their lives to jihadist outrages. The book explained that the EU is ‘fighting more and more effectively’ against terrorism, with 69 victims recorded compared to 18,000 worldwide.
JELLYFISH have been seen on a Costa del Sol beach - with the early sightings believed to be due to the high winter temperatures and recent mild weather. The creatures have been pictured on the popular Torreblanca beach in Fuengirola. While many jellyfish are unlikely to sting or cause irritation, caution is still advised if you encounter one. Last year saw a surge in the
number of jellyfish washing up on Spanish beaches. Beachgoers were warned to stay away from the potentially lethal Portuguese man o’war after several were spotted on beaches in Malaga City and the holiday hotspot Marbella. Hundreds of the venomous blue and purple creatures also washed up in Cadiz and Huelva provinces after being blown in by strong westerly winds from the mid-Atlantic Ocean.

BANK FRAUD: Nuisance calls can include serious scams.
Spain suffers most spam calls By Sally Underwood SPAIN is the country which receives the most spam calls per month, according to new figures. A new study by caller identity company Hiya, showed Spanish phone users receive an average of around nine spam calls per month; a rate of 24 per cent. Globally, more than 85,000 million spam calls were received in 2018, a 325
per cent increase on the year before. Spain received the highest percentage, followed by the United Kingdom at seven calls a month and 22 per cent, and Italy at six calls and 21 per cent. Many calls were automated by telecommunications companies, however some were more serious, involving banking scams, false kidnappings, or special rates number scams.

BEST BOOKS: The University of Cordoba’s library is among the best in Spain.
By Sally Underwood A STUDY by the University of Granada has revealed the library at the University of Cordoba is among the best in Spain.
The institution is the third best in Andalucia, behind the library at the University of Pablo de Olavide which comes in first, and the University of Sevilla is second. The ranking is based on an
efficiency calculator comparing each library’s budget with the number of book loans and computer downloads made. The results also factor in the number of people in the surrounding area.
Youth unemployment falls A TOTAL of 32.6 per cent of Spanish workers aged under 25 were unemployed at the end of January this year, down from 36.1 per cent the previous year. The fall comes as the equivalent figure for Italy rose from 32.6 per cent in January 2018 to 33 per cent this year. In October 2013, during the Eurozone debt crisis, the same statistics for both countries were 56 per cent for Spain and 40 per cent for Italy.

Blaze deaths TWO people have died after a fire broke out in an apartment building in Barcelona. A t 7 . 3 0 o n Su n d ay morning a group of firefighters were called to the scene after receiving multiple alerts from neighbours of the complex. The blaze broke out on the fourth floor of an 11storey apartment building with residents of the 44 apartments evacuated. The fire was extinguished around half an hour after the incident occurred. According to Spanish press, the victims were between 60 and 70 years of age. Catalan trial Rajoy testifies at Madrid hearings By Joe Gerrard S PA I N ’ S f o r m e r P r i m e Minister has said ex-Catalan Generalitat officials on trial over the 2017 independence referendum and declaration knew he would not allow a vote to ‘liquidate’ Spain. Mariano Rajoy, who was in office when the referendum was held in October 2017, said he was obliged to defend Spanish unity under the country’s Constitution. He was speaking as a witness in the ongoing trial of 12 defendants at the Supreme Court. Rajoy, who activated Article 155 after the Catalan Generalitat declared independence following the 2017 vote, said he and other officials had acted with

Former Secretary of State for Security Jose Antonio Nieto told prosecutors he believed activists with the Committee for the Defence of the Republic (CDR) encouraged violence. Nieto, who testified on Monday, also claimed the Catalan Generalitat had encouraged it. The trial continues.

PAY INEQUALITY: A new law will crack down on gender discrimination in the workplace.
Workplace discrimination By Sally Underwood SPAIN’S cabinet has announced it will crack down on gender discrimination in the workplace. New legislation, approved by the PSOE party, will see new fathers granted up to 16 weeks of paternity leave by 2021, while businesses will also be made to complete
equal pay audits. Politicians claimed women’s hourly earnings are 12.7 per cent lower than men’s in Spain and announced businesses will be forced to compile figures on average salary values, bonuses, and nonwage benefits by gender. The law, which currently only applies to companies with more than 250 employ-
ees, will be adopted by those with more than 150 employees in the legislation’s first year, those with more than 100 employees in its second year, and 50 or more in the third year. The new rules will also address issues including selection and hiring processes, as well as work conditions and sexual harassment.

Deal efforts BRITISH efforts to secure changes to the Brexit Withdrawal Agreement continued on Tuesday with further talks in Brussels. British Brexit Secretary Stephen Barclay and Attorney General Geoffrey Cox met with EU officials in a bid to change the proposed backstop mechanism. The backstop aims to prevent a hard border falling between Northern Ireland and the Republic if future trade talks between London and Brussels break down. It has become a sticking point in Westminster with pro-Brexit and DUP MPs, hampering Prime Minster Theresa May’s efforts to get her deal passed. It comes as May prepares to return to Parliament to put her Brexit deal to Parliament next Tuesday. If the deal fails to pass MPs will be asked whether they are willing to let Britain leave the EU without a deal. If they reject a no-deal outcome they will then be asked if the withdrawal date should be pushed back. Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn has said his party will back a second EU referendum. The party will continue to push for other options including a snap general election, Corbyn added.
Taking measures By Joe Gerrard BRITAIN’S ambassador to Spain has joined an expatriate group in welcoming measures approved by Spanish Ministers covering expatriates and tourists in a no-deal Brexit if London adopts similar measures. Simon Manley said the measures, passed by Royal Decree on Saturday, offered assurances to British expatriates and holidaymakers including for healthcare and residency. “I am pleased to see the Spanish government has announced a series of detailed Brexit contingency measures, published extensive advice to business and citizens, and has guaranteed the rights of EU nationals living in Britain,” the ambassador said. Richard Hill, vice president of the Brexpats in Spain advisory group, told Euro Weekly News the announcement was good news, and added he was ‘impressed’ with Spanish planning so far. “It is good news, but it should be said that it depends on the British government reciprocating for Spanish

Elephant’s lonely demise A FEMALE elephant passed away at Cordoba’s zoo after suffering a serious physical deterioration over the past six months.
The Cordoba Town Hall confirmed the death of the elephant, known as Flavia, after having spent 43 years in the zoo.
During a press conference, the town hall stated that Flavia’s passing came as a ‘hard hit’ to its keepers. Flavia’s physical well-being
had deteriorated over the past six months and had declined even further during the two weeks leading up to her passing.
The zoo had been working in collaboration with Pacma, an animal rights party, to try and transfer Flavia to a sanctuary in order to improve her everyday well-being. However, the Pacma stated that Cordoba zoo had ‘isolated the elephant, known as the saddest elephant in the world, during 43 years of confinement.’ They also assured that they had tried, up until Flavia’s last moments, to ‘save’ her from
captivity as she had spent all of her life in a confined space without being able to interact with other elephants and without enjoying the environmental richness that these types of animals require. Pacma stated that despite their ongoing efforts to give Flavia the ‘utmost dignified retirement’ that, in the most unexpected and sad way, she had the ‘worst ending’ she could have endured.

The mountain town now appears in a one-minute campaign broadcast across all national television networks and online. The advert, designed by Argentine company McCann Market, was filmed at the beginning of February on Frigiliana’s Calle Santo Cristo, and shows diners enjoying the brand’s drinks overlooking the town’s views. Frigiliana was previously chosen by confectionary company Ferrero Rocher for filming an advert in 2015. The town’s mayor, Alejandro Herrero said he was pleased with the latest piece of publicity for the area. He explained: “As soon as they arrived to ask for permission to shoot, we gave the crew all possible help and even provided them with the details of some residents who worked with horses to haul the material to the terrace where they staged a restaurant.”

Bankruptcies up by a fifth A TOTAL of 9,115 people and companies filed bankruptcy proceedings with Spanish courts in 2018, an increase of 20 per cent on the previous year according to official figures. Data from the General Council of the Judiciary (CGPJ) showed 5,842 of the cases came from companies and were filed in Commercial Courts. The number of business-related insolvencies rose by 9.1 per cent last year compared to 2017. A total of 3,273 of the cases were filed by individuals with no connection to business.

Budget deficit of €16 billion
Profits and losses SPANISH companies listed on the Madrid stock exchange have posted their results for last year, with those on the IBEX 35 index netting a combined total of almost €43 billion. The combined total for net profits was 0.1 per cent less than 2017 levels, pulled down by losses of more than €2.8 billion for the Naturgy energy company. The combined total for companies increased by 10.8 per cent from 2017 to 2018 without the Naturgy losses. International expansion, cost cutting and a combined increase in revenue of 4.1 per cent contributed to strong levels

The Santander bank made more than €7.8 billion in net profits, the largest amount netted by any company in the index. Oil company Repsol saw its net profits rise to more than €2.3 billion, an increase of 10.4 per cent compared to
2017 and the highest result for eight years. The increase was driven in part by rising crude oil prices. Energy firm Iberdrola made more than €3 billion in net profit in 2018, breaking all previous records. Fast food chain Telepizza posted €10.4 million in net losses, compared to a net profit of €31.8 million in 2017. The losses came as the firm increased sales by 14.5 per cent last year. Industrial chemical company SNIACE, which is not in the IBEX index but is on the stock market, posted losses of almost €5 million, 32 per cent more than 2017.
THE winner of the Sunday April 28 snap general election will have to find €16 billion to cover the deficit due to government budget plans being rejected. Finance Minister Maria Jesus Montero said the ruling left-leaning Partido Socialista (PSOE) budget’s failure to pass the Cortes would create a deficit of 2.4 per cent of economic output (GDP). The government was aiming to cut the deficit to 1.1 per cent of GDP but gaps in finances have risen because some spending measures have already passed, Montero added.

GROWTH: Deutsche Bank wants more customers. DEUTSCHE BANK said it is committed to increasing the number of its Spanish customers by 40 per cent to 900,000 by 2023. The German bank’s pledge comes after customer numbers grew in Spain between 2014 and 2018. Deutsche Bank reportedly considered pulling out of Spain during that time. Fernando Sousa, Deutsche Bank Spain’s general director,
said its company lending arm was likely to come up against ‘aggressive competition’ from rival banks. “We are seeking profitability rather than a bigger market share,” Sousa said. The general director for Spain added competition meant Deutsche Bank was seeking to differentiate itself to Spanish clients by offering specialised services to individuals and companies.
PUBLIC sector workers in Spain are set to see their salaries rise to €1,071.40 a month later this year, with government officials having approved the increase on Monday and the increase due to apply to roughly 40,000 staff members.
Data claim TELEFONICA President Jose Maria Alvarez-Pallete predicted users of electronic devices may eventually demand payment from companies to hand over personal data and added firms would have to continue self-regulating customer information use until the state regulates it.
Losses of €291 million SPANISH olive oil maker Deoleo has posted losses of €291 million and a fall in the value of assets of €200 million in 2018. The company reported a fall in sales of around 12.5 per cent to €605.5 million last year to Spain’s National Securities Market Commission (CNMW) regulator. Company share prices fell by 9.9 per cent to 7.5 cents after the news.
Deoleo said in a report on the results that it would maintain its commitment to producing quality goods. “The olive oil business is strongly shaped by a product offer in which the only incentive for purchases is low prices,” the company said. It comes as Deoleo replaced CEO Pierluigi Tosato with Miguel Iberrola Lopez. Tosato is set to stay on as a director.

ONCE again, Brexit rumours and developments have left the pound one of the market’s biggest movers, with the euro and US dollar steadier amid slowing economic outlooks. Euro EUR/GBP: Down from £0.87 to £0.85 EUR/USD: Down from $1.14 to $1.13 With Eurozone political jitters and uncertainties taking a backseat for the time being, the biggest news for euro investors over the past month has been uncertainty about the Eurozone’s economic outlook. Demand for the euro has been limp for most of the past month as concerns worsened that slowing global growth is having a worse impact on the Eurozone than previously expected.
MOVEMENT: Brexit rumours have meant mixed movement of currencies. German data has continued to print well below expectations. While the nation was able to avoid a recession in Q4 2018, data has been pointing towards a longer than expected economic slowdown for the Eurozone as a whole. So far, Eurozone data has not seen a notable uptick of any kind, keeping investors doubtful that the European Central Bank (ECB) will tighten Eurozone monetary policy any time soon. As the euro is still limp, investors are waiting for more optimistic Eurozone data before returning to the shared currency. German data will be particularly influential, and Friday’s German retail sales
data, unemployment stats and Markit manufacturing PMIs could offer the euro some support if they impress investors. Next week’s Eurozone growth estimates for Q4 and ECB press conference could influence the euro outlook if they surprise investors, and looking even further ahead, German factory data will continue to play an influential role in euro movement in the coming month. Pound GBP/EUR: Up from €1.14 to €1.16 GBP/USD: Up from $1.31 to $1.32 The past month has been a rollercoaster ride for the pound and UK markets in general. While at the start of the month
investors were lamenting a lack of progress in Brexit and fears the process was heading to an end without any firm outcome, market sentiment on Brexit has quickly turned around over the past couple of weeks. Despite a lack of fresh Brexit developments mid-February, speculation began to flare up that the UK government was leaning towards delaying the Brexit date past its current date of March 29. As bets of a delay rose, no-deal Brexit fears lightened and the pound strengthened. This week, sterling surged further as the UK government finally confirmed there could be a vote for an option of ex-
tending the process, if parliament continues to vote against its Brexit plan. Markets are anxious a no-deal Brexit remains on the table and this could lead to a sterling plunge if uncertainty persists throughout March. However, if UK parliament votes in favour of the government’s plan or in favour of a delay, the pound could sturdy as no-deal fears would lighten. US Dollar USD/GBP: Down from £0.76 to £0.75 USD/EUR: Remained at €0.87 Unsurprising US data, a more cautious Federal Reserve and developments in US-China trade developments have made investors hesitant to keep buying safe haven currencies like the US dollar. As a result, the dollar’s movement over the past month has been mixed. The Federal Reserve has indicated it expects the US economy to be impacted by the global economic slowdown. As a result, if US data falls short of expectations over the coming month, the dollar could be in for losses versus its rivals. The most influential data will be factory and growth stats.

LEAPY LEE SAYS IT OTHERS THINK IT ‘POLITICIANS come and go, but governments go on forever.’ Didn’t this recent quote hit the nail squarely on the appendage? As I have observed in this blurb on a number of occasions, the whole political masquerade is merely an illusion. Because we freely elect our politicians, we are under the almost laughable impression that we also in some way control our own future. Ha! Pure naïve bunkum. We are all players in a subversive system implemented by the shadowy billionaires who are our true masters. A preconceived plan to keep us all happy and firmly convinced that our democracy and ‘freedom’ are so important to us they are ultimately worth dying for. The truth is, the more chaotic and precarious our societies become, the more the money manipulators like it. Keeps us all nicely occupied ya see. I was recently speaking to a member of the Home Office and asked him if a newly-elected government made any difference to the workings of his department. With a barely detectable smirk he told me that, apart from a few small ‘irritations’ at the outset, nothing changes at all, the department simply carries on just as before. In fact, he went on to say that many new

This is precisely what happens with the world’s faceless financiers; they simply carry on business as usual, irrespective of governments or politicians. And they all cover each other’s backs. der affair (which has gone mysteriously very quiet)? Did you honestly think the King of Saudi Arabia, (family worth an estimated 1.4 trillion dollars!) would have his position threatened in any way by the actions of these assassins; even though, in my opinion, he almost certainly instigated the whole unsavoury affair himself?
Why not? Because he’s in league with the true rulers of the planet, as any leader of that oilsoaked country of corruption will always be. Murder means nothing to them. These people are a law unto themselves, an elite ‘club’ of secrecy and subterfuge who don’t care what government or dictator happens to be in power, just as long as they don’t threaten their own exalted positions. Among the many disruptions to society these faceless few revel in war, it’s a wonderful source of income and keeps the participants thoroughly occupied and out of their hair. They are no doubt also revelling in all the Brexit Bull, which is also keeping enormous numbers of the peasants extremely busy. It’s all a charade and they are the all-powerful puppet masters. Their aim is to make us fear life itself. They want us to hate ‘the other.’ They love confusion. They want us to practise aggression. They seek to divide us all. With division comes chaos and chaos is their greatest ally. And there aint a durn thing either you or I can do about it. On a lighter note ta rah! I see the pests of summer are already arriving. Peter’s odd and curious world by Peter Purvey AS this is my first article for EWN, a small introduction to new readers may be appropriate. I have been writing a monthly column for the RTN for over a year, about a combination of things I have read or heard which piques my interest or curiosity, and best describes the odd and curious brain I was born with. Most of the stories I relate are largely autobiographical. I have travelled extensively in the USA and Australasia, and have experienced hotel fires, earthquakes, met people and been in situations you would have loved (or hated!) I read Time each week, and Astronomy, Scientific American and Discover monthly so I keep my interests up-todate on many fronts. I hope my writings will entertain, amuse and sometimes give you food for thought. For my first contribution I offer ‘Memories,’ from an experience last summer which I hope to repeat this year. Memories are made of this...
MAKING MEMORIES: Food with a view at Arenal beach. While enjoying an early evening meal at my favourite little restaurant ‘Calpe Playa’ on Arenal beach, the thought came over me; at that particular moment in time there was nowhere else in the world I would rather be. With a panoramic view from the Ifach to (almost) the setting sun, I watched people coming off the beach carrying the remains of a day’s pleasure; strollers, many with their pets, taking a paseo, looking for somewhere to eat. I
began to think, If I wasn’t here, where would I like to be? The association of food with location was uppermost and I began to think of food with a view. The revolving restaurant high over Las Vegas as the sun sets and the desert all around changes colour would be high on my list. The food’s not bad either. I don’t usually eat oysters, but three locations where I made a pig of myself are: an evening boat trip round Sydney Bay where the oysters are some of the
finest in the world; New Orleans with dinner and oysters at the revolving rooftop restaurant is a must, and in San Antonio on the river walk. The river snakes its way across the town deep in a self-carved gorge with river taxis, shops and restaurants serving the most mouthwatering oysters. Once, in San Diego, I invited a dear old lady friend of mine to dinner. To my embarrassment she completely ate and drank me under the table on a feast of
oysters, Champagne, Guinness and red wine. I slept through the most severe earthquake that night, dreaming only of pink elephants climbing the wall. A few odd items... • I read that a bacterium which can ingest plastic and turn it into a harmless chemical residue has been found by accident. (With plastic waste much in the news these days, I hope it has a voracious appetite). • The oldest known footprints have been found in South China. The 546million-year-old fossil imprints represent the earliest known record of an animal with legs. (Not one of us! We weren’t around for ages.) • The Earth has been given a new geological Chapter named ‘The Meghalayan Age.’ ( named for the Countess of Sussex?) This covers a period from 4,260 BC to the present. • The beginning was marked by a dreadful drought which saw the end of a number of civilisations across the planet. Why are we conned? Mike Senker In my opinion Views of a Grumpy Old Man WHY do I feel like the unluckiest punter in the world sometimes? As you all know, because everything is done online now and you have to give your email details to book flights, hotels, car hire etc, the companies keep all your information and then start sending you offers. This is OK except none of the offers ever apply to me. I never qualify for any of them. Flights are to places I don’t want to go and car hire is at a time of year I don’t want to travel. The same applies to hotels. They dangle carrots all the time. PayPal send me stuff for discounts I don’t want or need. I never get free delivery on Amazon because although it’s offered, when you check you find out you have to spend €50 and my order comes to €20 and I’m not going to spend €30 more to save €4. Not one offer I am sent have I ever been able to use. So, what I’m doing
now is unsubscribing to all the mailing lists so I don’t get the hump any more. On the subject of offers and car hire my pal asked me if I knew any decent car hire places here and, as he was busy, could I look for one for him. Wow, what a minefield of con artists are out there. I saw one for about €50 for a week. I thought it was silly cheap so I delved a bit deeper. Lo and behold it was an impossible price. Firstly, you had to pay for a full tank of fuel and bring it back empty and if you don’t there’s no refund so that could cost you an extra €20 - 30. Then there is the extra insurance because you’re not covered for this or that. This is a real killer because they hold back about €1,000 on your credit card. When I read some reviews for this particular company so many people said they had a problem getting their deposit back because this firm came up with reasons like there was a scratch that wasn’t there before and as the person hiring hadn’t had the foresight to take pictures of the car beforehand, they couldn’t prove otherwise. Why does everything have to be such a chore? Yeah, I know, once you find the right one it’s all fine, but why do we have to be conned all the time?

IN the interests of balanced journalism may I point out an error of exaggeration in the report by Joe Gerrard on Migrant arrivals in issue 1753? On page nine he reports: ‘This January’s figure is almost three times higher than that of the same time last year.’ Using the two figures of 4,104 and 1,396 here’s the error. Divide the second into the first and you get 2.94; almost three I agree. But it means the latest figure is not three times more but three times AS MUCH. His statement is an exaggeration. To explain further, 4,104 is 2,708 more than 1,396 and that is nearly double the first figure. So he can truthfully say EITHER: January’s figure is almost three times as much as last year’s OR: January’s figure is almost two times more than last year’s The corruption of the two is an exaggeration that if true at three times more would mean the latest figure would be about 1,396 + 3x1,396 = 5,584. That is the clear exaggeration in his writings. This mistake is sadly very common with journalists which undermines their credibility if they can’t report correctly proportional increases in numbers. SPAIN’S announcement on guaranteeing the status of legally registered British expatriates in a no-deal Brexit is welcome, but now is not the time to stop preparing. Madrid said the some 300,000 legally registered expatriates will continue to enjoy the same rights they have now, including on healthcare. British officials including Ambassador Simon Manley have welcomed the move. So have expatriate groups and no doubt many expatriates themselves were also encouraged. But speaking to one senior member of Brexpats in Spain, we were told that concern remains over those expatriates who have are not registered. Brexpats in Spain Vice President Richard Hill told Euro Weekly News that regardless of whether Britain leaves with or without a deal on Friday March 29, getting registered was essential. If Britain leaves with a deal the new measures will no longer be needed as they are already covered by the Withdrawal Agreement itself. If a no-deal Brexit comes to pass then, providing Britain makes similar guarantees to Spanish citizens there, legally registered expatriates will be protected. But being legally registered is the catch. Spanish authorities have worked tirelessly to accommodate those expatriates getting their residency ahead of Brexit day, including fast-tracking applications and making more resources available to cope with the mounting backlog. If you have not begun the residency process then we advise that you do not gamble on them being as accommodating after Brexit. A little hassle now could save you a lot more later.

for patients undergoing radiotherapy, to help ease the stress of travelling to and from appointments during the treatment period. In provinces where MACS does not have apartments, alternative accommodation can be made available through financial support, following a social assessment.

Lifestyle factors THE Andalucian Society for the Study of Cancer has spoken about the importance of a healthy lifestyle in helping to prevent cancer. The organisation’s president Ana Serradilla, explained more than half of cancers which occur today are due to factors which can be controlled, in particular diet, nutrition, physical inactivity and obesity. She added these aspects can be modified through changes in habits, saying: “Factors such as poor eating habits, smoking or ageing increase the risk of suffering [cancer]. Prevention, early detection and adequate treatment are increasingly effective against this disease.” According to the International Agency for Research on Cancer, it is estimated by 2030 the number of new cases of cancer will increase by 70 per cent. This increase will be higher in developing countries due to lifestyle habits. The Andalucian Society for the Study of Cancer will hold a conference on Nutritional Health and Oncology on April 5 and 6 in Malaga, bringing together professionals from the fields of nutrition, surgery, oncology, and sports to discuss the issue.

A LIGHT LUNCH: Serve with lemon wedges and crusty bread.
Emperador Swordfish THE warmer afternoons over the past week have meant enjoying a few leisurely lunches sat in the sun here at Olive Tree Farm. The longer days have meant the hens are now laying well, but sometimes we need something different to egg dishes! Having spotted a pack of Emperador reduced in our newly refurbished Mercadona store, I decided to give it a go. Although we have had it numerous times whilst eating out, it was just one of those things I never actually bought. If you are having guests for lunch and enjoy pan fried/griddled fish, this a perfect dish to make taking less than 10 minutes from start to finish.
Emperador a la Plancha • Ingredients 1 fish fillet per person Olive oil Salt and black pepper Parsley Garlic A couple of lemons • Method Heat a heavy based frying pan or griddle pan. Splash a sprinkle of water in the pan to check the temperature. If it bubbles and evaporates immediately the temperature is correct. Dry your fish fillets with kitchen paper. Rub a little olive oil on both sides of the fillet and

season with salt and pepper. Add the fillets to your hot pan and cook for about three minutes. Turn it over and cook the second side for about two minutes. Remove from the pan and
set aside. For the dressing… Take a few sprigs of parsley and chop finely. Chop or grate a couple of cloves of garlic and add to a mortar and pestle, give it a good crush. Add a couple of tablespoons of olive oil to the garlic, a sprinkle of sea salt, a squeeze of fresh lemon juice and then your chopped parsley and stir through. Plate up your fish and spoon over some of your dressing. Serve with a couple of lemon wedges a salad and crusty bread. A simple tasty dish that doesn’t mean spending hours in the kitchen and results in a lovely light lunch.

We recently won an award for best contemporary restaurant on the Costa del Sol and I had thought that the word meant extremely modern/creative, but in truth it means living in present day times. That is better than living in the past I suppose! With food it is a little different because creative chefs are masters of inventing new things and recreating old things, evolving them to make them modern and we call this contemporary. I often write about this, for example when I recreated the classic Eton mess dish using a more modern approach or when I recreated the paella much to the shock of the Spanish! The word contemporary works well for the style of tapas we cook at lunch-
time because we are not cooking tapas from the past like most of the Spanish tapas restaurants. Last week I wrote about some of our Asian fusion tapas which are very popular at the Geranium, but we also use a lot of local ingredients and cook them in a more classic way. One example is the pork fillet that we buy from a little farm near Toledo. It’s anything but regular pork, it is pretty much a wild beast and feeds off either chestnuts or acorns depending on what forest they live in. I actually visited the area to see for myself with a friend who is a hunter. He was hunting wild boar which is similar to the Iberian pork that we buy only bigger and more vicious! When pork is bred like this in the wild, it can and should be eaten on the rare side, because it’s wild there are no salmonella concerns, medium rare is perfect. When it is cooked like this it is moist and juicy and full of flavour, you must try it! Memories of cooking this type of pork go back quite a long way into the late 90’s, when I prepared it for an event that Her Majesty the Queen was attend-

I refused to cook it well done because this was special pork and so we conjured up some lamb rumps which because of the high fat content, can be cooked well done and still be moist. It was a far more traditional dish and not what I had in mind, but Her Majesty was happy and that was all that mattered. She obviously was not aware of the commotion in the kitchen, thank heavens and in fact she commented to me about how smoothly the event had run! I remember that one of the Royal guests thanked me for my service and held out his hand to me. I opened my hand to find a pound coin. Thank you, sir, but there is no need I said, but he insisted! On leaving I went to pack my knives in my car which was a fairly new Porsche 911 convertible. The Royal guest appeared from the car next door which was a fairly old Fiesta. He looked shocked, I called out… good night Sir... Good night Chef, he replied in a sort of posh grumpy way!

Consumers don’t know what they want, warns Terence Kennedy THE bravest t-shirt I ever saw was sported by a brash Aussie lass: ‘So many men, so little time.’Perhaps today it needs a slight amendment; So many toys… How did we get locked into the ruinous cycle (for the planet’s resources and our bank balances) of constantly wanting, needing, the shiniest new gadgets? I blame that first iPhone back in 2007. Granted, the rot had begun before that, with providers herding us into two-year replacement contracts leaving us with drawers of dead phones. But unlike today’s stalled innovation, each new model did often boast a huge techno-leap over its quickly-obsolete predecessor. T h e n c a m e t h e i P h o n e ’s r e lentless annual upgrade cycle, surrounded by showbiz hype to rival the second coming, and yea verily did Samsung and Moto and the rest join in and be-
fore we knew it, those with more money than sense were changing their phones every year. I don’t know what circles you move in, but I’ve only ever met one person who absolutely had to buy a new car each year: an American ‘realtor’ or estate agent who insisted other Americans wouldn’t buy property from someone driving last year’s hopelessly outdated model. Ye t p h o n e s l a s t p o t e n t i a l l y longer than cars; no moving
parts, just slap in a new battery every few years and in theory they could go on forever. The ecological cost of our upgrade frenzy has been devastating in terms of the raw materials, not least the so-called ‘conflict minerals’ whose proceeds help fuel the misery of African wars and corruption. The good news is that the tide is finally turning. A UK survey back in 2013 found users were changing their phones every 20 months. Now it’s 29 months and rising.
A random sampling from the world’s 1.5 billion smartphone users recently found 54 per cent intending to keep their phones until they’re finished. A p p l e ’s r e c e n t p r o f i t d i p comes as its top-end phone hits more than €1,500, more than I p a i d f o r m y c u r r e n t c a r, a n d triple the price of my desktop computer containing at least as much top technology and 10 times the materials, which is quite simply nuts. Samsung’s flagships aren’t far behind, yet half that price spent on a ‘lesser ’ brand like Honor or OnePlus buys almost as much technology for your pocket in today’s cutthroat market, and I recently picked up a basic emergency phone in our local hypermarket for a princely €12. Perhaps a famous philosopher ’s warning should be heeded: ‘You can never get enough of what you don’t need to make you happy.’
YES I realise I do need to get out more as I confess to logging every charge I give my devices. But my 2014 Nexus tablet has now had over 500 charges yet still runs for days. Contrary to our ‘buywashed’ beliefs, the batteries in modern devices will not generally be exhausted after two years, and certainly not one. A friend who is an average smartphone user is still going strong with the original battery in her five-year-old iPhone. If she does need a replacement, a battery costs less than €70 to install. Although manufacturers don’t shout about it, most other flagship phones can be refurbished back to ‘asnew’ for a mere fraction of the price of the newest model. So why wouldn’t you?

This time it was news of the untimely death (at the age of just 49) of Keith Flint; charismatic, lunatic frontman of one of the UK’s most successful electronic dance bands, The Prodigy. Formed in Essex by Liam Howlett, Keith Flint’s official duties in the band were dancer and vocalist. The Prodigy quickly achieved a cult and dedicated following in the early 90’s rave scene in London. They would emerge from the underground scene, and along with The Chemical Brothers and Fatboy Slim, would become pioneers of the Big Beat genre. Mainstream success followed in the mid-90’s, with massive No 1 hits Firestarter and Breathe. Flint adopted a punk persona which dominated the videos for the band’s hits. The music was hardcore and so were the videos, with Flint developing a somewhat scary image. This image was somewhat at odds with his real personality, with people who knew knew him and who worked with him describing him as a complete gentleman!

Double celebration THERE was a double celebration in Arboleas last Thursday. Not only did the municipality mark Andalucia Day, the local council also inaugurated the new Social Centre building. Mayor Cristobal Garcia Granados led the honours of cutting the ribbon on the new facility located in front of the health centre. Accompanying the mayor were representatives of charities based in the area: Cecilia Molina Verdu from the AECC Spanish cancer association, Jean Bircher from Walk for Life, and Carrie Ann Earl from FACE (Fundraising in Arboleas, Caring for Everyone). The official inauguration was followed by an exhibition of traditional Spanish folklore dancing performed by the municipal dance school, with music provided by the municipal band. Home again A YOUNG man from Olula del Rio prevented from leaving Taiwan for six months after he was i n v o l v e d i n a tra ffic a c c id en t in which a woman died, has arrived back in Spain. A lva r o C a r r i o n f l e w in to M a d rid las t week, where his family were waiting to welcome him back. Alvaro had been in Taiwan in relation to his doctorate in marine geology. Last summer he rented a moped for a day out with
friends and collided with an elderly lady on a bicycle, who subsequently lost her life. A court decided to take away his passport until there was a decision on the case. Alvaro launched a campaign to raise the €50,000 which would enable him to reach a financial agreement with the woman’s family. Spanish press reported in the end he paid the family €41,000, and a court subsequently ruled he was free to leave the country.
Residence budget priority INVESTMENT in an adult residence and occupational centre is one of the key features of the Seron 2019 budget, which the local authority approved in a plenary meeting. This year ’s budget earmarks €1.8 million for the construction of the residence out of a total budget of €7.6
million. Also featuring in the investment section, which adds up to more than €3.1 million, is the allocation of nearly €213,000 for restoration works on the castle, which include tackling a problem of rainwater drainage, repairing cracks and building a structure over the crumbled turret.
A further substantial investment is the nearly €150,000 for rural roads, while smaller investments include €50,000 for running electrical cables underground. The 2019 Seron municipal budget represents a 30 per cent increase on last year, or up €1.7 million.

Town hall open ALBOX Council’s new headquarters is open for business. The renovated former convent, hospital and school was officially inaugurated as the town hall in a ceremony on Monday evening, Albox mayor Francisco Torrecillas, Public Works Councillor Jose Campoy, and Andalucia regional government provincial Tourism, Justice and Local Administration Delegate Jose Luis Delgado doing the ribbon cutting. Hundreds of people turned out for the event, also attended by dignitaries from civil society, the church and military.
Gender-violence victim support SEVEN municipalities have signed up to the VioGen System aimed at improving protection of victims of gender-based violence. The inclusion of Arboleas, Cantoria, Gador, Los Gallardos, Tabernas, Tijola and Zurgena brings to 25 the total number of municipalities participating in the Gender-Violence Complete Monitoring System, to give it its full name. The mayors of the seven made it official last week, signing agreements in an act attended by the new head of the Andalucia Co-ordination Unit on violence against women, Maribel Montaño, the provincial Guardia Civil Command colonel Arturo Prieto, and Government Sub-delegate in Almeria Manuel de la Fuente. The Government sub-delegate acted as the delegate for the Secretary of State for Security. The VioGen system is based on information gathered from risk evaluations. The information is used to establish preventive, monitoring and protection measures for gender-based violence victims, adapted to each specific case, and therefore ‘represents a valuable tool when it comes to evaluating the situation and needs of female victims of mistreatment,’ Montaño commented. “In the fight against this scourge there can be no going back,” she added. The Government Sub-delegation put the number of active gender-based violence cases included in the VioGen system in Almeria at the end of 2018 at 1,940, 16.5 per cent more than at the end of 2017. In 26 of the active cases the victim is under 16. Since 2003, 34 women in Almeria have been killed by their partners or expartners.

Carnival comes to a close CARNIVALS in Cantoria were brought to a close on Saturday with a colourful procession through the streets of Almanzora. Starting off from the old palace at five in the afternoon, members of the local carnival groups kitted out in all manner of fancy dress took part in in what was the final event of nearly a week of celebrations.
“It’s very difficult to imagine what Carnival in Cantoria and Almanzora is like if you don’t come and experience it at least once, as it is a very ingrained tradition, and which every year young people take responsibility for keeping alive with an increasingly large number of carnival groups,” commented local mayor Puri Sanchez.

Until I’d experienced it, Carnival was for me a high street procession with lots of baton-twirling majorettes, trade vehicle floats and children in fancy dress. Then, shortly after coming to live here, we left La Gomera to prevent the car being snatched by the Guardia Civil for overstaying its welcome, (this was pre-EU membership, think of all the fun after Brexit!) for Tenerife

It was the Entierro de la Sardina (burial of the sardine) final day. The children and I drove, astonished, into what looked like a city-wide performance of the Rocky Horror Show. Everyone was in black, wailing and screaming. There were nuns, ghouls, priests, tarts, bishops, and thousands of grief-stricken, howling widows of both sexes, many with enormous plastic breasts. The death of a giant sardine had upset them badly; a mock priest eulogised to frenzied wailing. As an ex-convent girl, (but all Brits are prudes compared to the Spanish) I was thrilled, and continue to be so. This year’s carnival in

Pause to accept THERE are some who suggest that as Christians we should, like aeroplane passengers just sit back, relax and enjoy the journey, allowing God to be in control. There’s a story of one such Christian, who was shipwrecked and left floating on a piece of wreckage in the ocean unconcerned as he was confident God would save him. The captain of a passing liner hailed him asking if he was OK, and he replied he was fine. A submarine later surfaced nearby and the captain invited him on board, but he declined, explaining that as a Christian he was confident God was in control, so all would be well. Then, as he was nearing exhaustion, a helicopter hovered above and tried to rescue him, but with such little strength as remained, he fought off all attempts, seeing acceptance of any such human intervention as a denial of his faith. Minutes later, he died, and on arriving in heaven he protested God had let him down; he’d had absolute faith that God would save him, but his faith had gone un-
rewarded. Then came the reply: “My child, I tried, but you kept refusing my help. I sent a liner, a submarine and a helicopter. What more could I do?” I sometimes feel we can be a bit like this man. Yes, I believe God is in control and could intervene in any situation, so there’s no need for me to worry. But God frequently uses human instruments, often unaware that they’re acting at His direction, to implement His purposes, so we need to be ready to respond accordingly and to recognise God’s hand in so many events, actions and decisions of those around us. And of course, God never forces His will on us, but like the liner, the submarine and the helicopter in the story, merely offers help; it’s up to us to accept. And how bad we often are at accepting! It hurts our pride to admit we can’t help ourselves. So God tirelessly offers free forgiveness for all our failures through Jesus, and all we need to do is accept. But so often, like the man in the story, we stubbornly refuse all God’s offers.

CONSULAR MATTERS THE Danish handball team have previously been the best in Europe on two occasions, and won gold as Olympic champions in the 2016 Rio de Janeiro games, but they have never won a Handball World Cup before. However, a few weeks ago, Denmark proved that their team is a steamroller by crushing Norway and winning the 2019 Handball World Championship for the first time in their history. Denmark played at home and their team members entered the field convinced this was their day. The team not only had a whole sports pavilion with bleachers crowded with fans willing to support them until they were exhausted, but also with the whole country behind them. A totally dedicated country which began celebrating their anticipated victory from the second half, standing in the Herning pavilion and at home, watching the game on TV. On February 4, Alberto Camas, president of the City of Malaga Handball Club, with whom I have a

The agreement will allow young people to approach the handball team in Malaga, and to become members of the club as well as the creation of an association of young fans linked to the team. This is a clear example in which sport and diplomacy can and should be of service to society. Society becomes more and more competitive each day, but we must base the education of its young people on effort and honesty and ultimately try to be the best version of ourselves that we can. ONE single word in Spanish conjures up only one image... and that word is Rioja. And with Rioja comes the fine wines that are made in the region in Spain that bears its name. The wine is produced from grapes harvested in both the autonomous communities of La Rioja and Navarre and the Basque province of Alava. Rioja itself is divided into three zones known as Rioja Alta, Rioja Baja and Rioja Alavesa, and a significant number of the famous wines from the region are blended from fruit grown in all three. La Rioja is located south of the Cantabrian Mountains along the River Ebro, and benefits from a typical continental climate with the mountains helping to protect the many vineyards from the fierce winds. The name Rioja is believed to have taken its name from the River Oja (Rio Oja), and most of the area is situated on a plateau around 460 metres (1,500 feet) above sea level. Yes, wine is the dominating feature of La Rioja - not a surprise when you consider there are over 500 wineries - but as well as

GRAPES: Rioja wine is also harvested using grapes from Navarra and the Basque Province. wine tasting (and buying the odd crate to sample at a later date) a visit to the region also offers a wide range of other activities. The more adventurous can take part in horse-riding, hot-air ballooning and quad biking, whereas the more relaxed can investigate La Rioja’s links to the Saint James pilgrim route. Declared as World Heritage Sites by UNESCO, the Santo Domingo de la Calzada
and its cathedral, San Millán de la Cogolla, site of the Suso and Yuso monasteries, are known for being the birthplace of the first written words in Spanish. The unbeatable combination of culture and wine makes the La Rioja region a place not to miss out on. Add to that the forest areas, lunar landscapes and mountainous areas there is every opportunity for some spectacular photography.

LAST weekend an email popped into my website inbox from someone called ‘Shirley.’ Nothing strange in that; I frequently get terrific comments (very flattering, many thanks!) from readers of my novels as well as of this column. But this email was a bit different. It was accompanied by a photo of an extremely pretty, smiling teenager with the message that she hoped she could become my ‘girlfriend.’ I know I appear in trousers in the photos on my website but do I really look, umm, male? (Check this out for yourself; the website’s listed below!). And, in any case, would I honestly be interested in befriending someone a fraction of my age over the internet? The sad truth is that many have been duped into sending money to internet conmen posing as would-be girlfriends/ boyfriends. (Last year, UK victims of romance scams - the majority of whom are women - lost £50m, an average of £11,145 each, according to data from police reporting centre Action Fraud). All part and parcel of what’s usually known as ‘Nigerian scam,’ because Nigeria is where it usually originates. And it works. One Nigerian conman received a 12-year jail sentence after scamming

CONMEN TRAP: Beware of the internet romance scam. $1.3 million from victims. Nigerian scam has many variations, but its dating or romance scam, in addition to requesting money for college fees, sick relations etc, is a bit different; the fraudsters upload fake glamorous photos, mostly of white people claiming to be foreign specialists working in Nigeria or Ghana. After they initiate some correspondence and perhaps even send some cheap gifts, they’ll inevitably be almost on their way to meet you, but something will happen to them. They’ll get robbed, roughed up (you get the picture) and naturally, you’ll be their only contact to beg for financial help. Scams so obvious they could have been
made up by members of the present government; themselves world leaders in rewriting the textbook on incompetence. Who owns my terrace? I refer to David Searl’s article in January. I agree with the roof of a building being a ‘communal element,’ but I can’t understand why ‘no unit actually owns its terrace.’ The title deeds to my apartment state the area of my terrace is included in the total area of the property. I pay community fees at a lower rate than my neighbour who has exactly the same sized apartment, but with a bigger terrace. I have David Searl’s book but I cannot see where in the LHP it says everything outside of the apartment wall is communal. D.H. (by e-mail)

Article 396 of You and the Law in Spain the Spanish Civil Code establishes the Law of Horizontal Property, and it also establishes that communal property includes the ‘Building façade, with the exterior fittings of terraces, balconies and windows…’ Your property title separates the terrace from the enclosed area, but does not state specifically that you have ‘exclusive use’ and not full title as a private element. This does not appear in the LHP. Your neighbour’s larger terrace can affect the amount of his fees.

Three cars - the VW Golf 1.6TDI, the FIAT Panda 1.0 and the previous level Ford Fiesta 1.0 EcoBoost - get zero-star ratings. The Mini line-up has been simplified in recent months, though many are likely to find it still rather complex especially as there are several options and packages in the mix. Prices start at €18,648 (£16,190) for a three-door model, though many will opt for the more practical five-door variant which is priced from €19,454 (£16,890). The SEAT el-Born has been designed to guarantee the pleasure of driving. It has an electric propulsion system associated with dynamic qualities, with the four wheels located at the ends of the vehicle and a more agile and energetic response compared to traditional cars. It represents the design of the vehicles of the future, in a modern and integrated way, with special emphasis on the front. Aerodynamics are the key to maximising the vehicle’s autonomy, which is why the
SEAT logo on the front is aligned with the bodywork, and no air intake is necessary to cool the engine, so the grille is ignored. The cooling fans, which are located under the front of the vehicle, provide air to the battery and optimise the air flow in that area. “The SEAT el-Born is the reflection of our design and SEAT brand in the new era of electric cars. Our development team has taken the challenge of making our first electric car attractive very seriously. IRISHMAN Peter Moloney and the Team Harmony-owned mare Ornellaia won Sunday’s four-star Grand Prix at the Spanish Sunshine Tour in Vejer De La Frontera, Cadiz. Only five of the 50 starters managed to jump clear in the opening round, with Moloney from Waterford joined in the jump-off by fellow Irish rider Billy Twomey with Lady Lou. Moloney and the 14-year-old Ornellaia claimed the winner’s prize of almost €23,500 after setting an unbeatable target of clear in 43.25 seconds. Switzerland’s Carlo Pfyffer cleared in 43.10 to finish second. There was another Irish winner in the 1m45 speed class at the same venue, Sligo’s Richard Howley riding Chinook.

Almeria Bowling Club 2019 Spring Handicap Triples THIS is the sixth year of this competition, which this year got underway on January 7, and was played mainly on Monday afternoons. The best five individual total scores were totted up from the period of eight planned dates. These were then drawn into two triples to play in the final on Friday March 1. The final six successful members were the winners, Tony Mullen, Tony Lear and Sandra Brown, who were drawn to play against Reg Birmingham, Lyn Smith and Siobhan Herrity. The competition is a drawn triple, where the total handicaps of the drawn teams are averaged and the difference starts the game at that level. On paper the final was forecast as a very tight game considering the players taking part. The bowling was of a very good quality, but it wasn’t to be a good day for Reg and team, having to concede the championship on the 16th end as they were unable to win due to the number of ends and the score Tony and team had achieved. Club captain Chris Brown thanked the many supporters, Bryan Hughes for the care of the green and equipment, Tony Lear for running the competition and the players taking part.
