THE Almeria Cycling Classic was an all-round triumph. Sunday’s thrilling race attracted leading international competitors and was broadcast live on Eurosport to 40 different countries. This was the 23rd edition of what is now a top level sports event. Among the 18 teams taking part were some of the world’s best, including Spain’s Movistar, the Australian Mitchelton-Scott, Cofidis from France, Katusha from Switzerland, the German Bora-Hansgrohe, Rally UHC Cycling from the US and the Russian Gazprom. Cyclists battled it out over a tough 192-kilometre route. Starting in Almeria City and ending in Roquetas de Mar, they went through Viator, Rioja, Tabernas, the Filabres mountains, Uleila del Campo, Cuesta Blanca, Sorbas, Lucainena de las Torres, the Alhamilla mountains and Turrillas. Slovenian Luka Mezgec (MitcheltonScott) took third place on the podium. “We wanted the race to continue crossing borders, and we achieved that,” said Almeria Council president Javier A Garcia in reference to the TV
coverage. The provincial council head described Almeria as a ‘reference point’ for cycling and an ideal training location for teams, adding: “We are going to continue working to consolidate our province as a leading cycling destination at European and world level.”
Tradition and innovation THE Gastro Andalucia food fair will blend the most traditional regional cooking with the very latest in culinary innovation, Vera mayor Feliz Lopez has promised. The mayor described this weekend’s event at Vera’s El Palmeral fairground, as ‘unique’ in Almeria with its aim of reviving local cooking traditions while embracing new ideas. Lopez also labelled Gastro Andalucia a ‘showcase’ for the Levante area of the province, with Vera at its ‘gastronomic heart.’ The mayor was speaking at a presentation of the fair at the official base for the 2019 Almeria Spanish Gastronomy Capital events and activities in Almeria City, accompanied by chefs from some of the area’s most prestigious eateries.
This, the third edition of Gastro Andalucia, runs for three days, starting tomorrow (Friday). Fair co-ordinator Juan Leal promised it will be “a fair for everyone, thought out so it can be enjoyed by families.” Vera Trade Councillor Francisca Garcia explained one of the novelties this year is the 3,000sqm marquee “to bring together all the fair events in the same area and integrate the gastronomy with the folklore and craft events and performances.” Gastro Andalucia unites some of the top regional and national chefs and the Sabores Almeria gourmet brand producers, the cooking demonstrations, tastings and workshops clearly among the main attractions. There will also be live music, performances of folk
dancing and demonstrations by artisans skilled in crafts including lace, basket making and pottery. Special family-orientated games and activities are a further feature of the fair. The event has the full sup-
port of the provincial government, Almeria Council Agriculture and Environment Deputy Maria Lopez Asensio saying it showed off the high quality of Almeria cuisine and produce, and encouraged the public to go along.

Homeowners call on parties to deliver promise HOMEOWNERS’ associations have urged the governing political parties in Andalucia to ‘deliver on their promise to provide a solution for irregular houses.’ The call for action came at the annual meeting of the co-ordinating body of associations campaigning for planning legalisation (CALU), held in Cordoba at the weekend. The conference discussed an amendment proposed by Almeria-based Abusos Urbanisticos Andalucia NO (AUAN), which the association argues is a ‘concrete solution’ for thousands of houses ‘destined to be legalised over time’ via a town plan, and which meanwhile cannot be connected to basic services or for which it’s not possible to get deeds. AUAN said the amendment would allow for access to water and electricity, and for the application of measures to minimise the environmental impact of these houses stemming from not being able to connect to basic services, and some legal certainty over title deeds.
DEMAND: The homeowners’ associations want political parties which initially supported the proposed amendment, to do so now they are in power. AUAN explained the Popular Party had, with the support of Ciudadanos, presented the amendment in the Andalucian parliament last year, but it was rejected by PSOE, Podemos and the United Left party.
AUAN has now prepared the amendment in the form of a parliamentary bill and has initiated contacts with the political parties to promote the initiative, President Maura Hillen Hillen commenting “the par-
ties which supported the amendment in the first place, can do so again now that they are in power.” The majority of the representatives of associations from various parts of Andalucia attending the meeting backed the amendment, suggesting some changes which AUAN said it will include in the text. “We have a commitment from the new president of the Junta de Andalucia, Juanma Moreno, to resolve the problem of illegal houses,” Hillen maintained. “Our proposal is nothing new, already having the support of the PP and Ciudadanos in 2018. “We hope they will continue to maintain their support now they are in government, and will give maximum priority to this commitment, because we have had enough of the byzantine planning procedures which plague Andalucia.” The associations also agreed to request a meeting with the new Andalucia Minister for Development, Infrastructure and Planning, Marifran Carazo.

Flying high ALMERIA airport passenger numbers were up 12.6 per cent last month on January 2018 at 34,176, according to figures from AENA. Domestic flight passenger numbers rose 11 per cent, while the number of people taking foreign connections was just over 27 per cent more.

ENIGMATIC: Basque is thought to predate most European languages.
Unique language THE sign in this picture is written in Basque, one of Spain’s most unique and enigmatic languages which will be a talking point today (Thursday) as the world celebrates linguistic diversity. Basque and other regional dialects are celebrated every February 21 on International Mother Language Day. The day promotes multilingualism, the speaking of more than one language by a person or community. Basque is an ‘isolated’ language, meaning it cannot be traced to others currently in use or that have died out.
Spanish, as well as the Asturian, Catalan, Galician and Valencian, all have their roots in Latin and also have Arabic influences. Basque is thought to have developed before the spread of Indo-European languages across Europe and Asia which spawned the modern languages spoken in those areas today. Exact details of its origins and development are unknown. The first Basque book, a collection of poems called the Linguae Vasconum Primitiae, was published in 1545. The use of Basque was suppressed
New move on high-speed rail THE ADIF railway infrastructure administrator has put out to tender the consultation and technical assistance services for projects for the second phase of the AVE high-speed rail link integration works in Almeria. A more than two-kilometre stretch of underground line will go from the El Puche area of the city, where works are already underway, to the Avenida del Mediterraneo. The works will have a budget of nearly €2.4 million and an 18-month completion period, and will be divided into three stages:
preliminary project, business plan and construction. Almeria City mayor Ramon Fernandez-Pacheco said it was “great news for the city,” describing the high-speed rail line as “an absolute priority.” Government Sub-delegate in Almeria Manuel de le Fuente also welcomed ADIF’s announcement, saying it was “a further demonstration of the government’s commitment to this infrastructure, to this province and to the 2023 date.”

Activities app ALMERIA City Council has launched a 2019 Spanish Gastronomy Capital mobile app offering up-to-date information on all the programmed activities throughout the year. The Almeria 2019 app also features a selection of recipes for traditional dishes, information about locally produced gourmet products, and general tourist information about the city and the province, including places of interest, museums and galleries.

The app launch is the latest in a series of measures to promote Almeria’s status as this year’s gastronomy capital. Other promotional investments include advertising on a double-decker bus in central London from mid-February to mid-March and at Almeria, Palma de Mallorca, Barcelona and Sevilla airports. There is also a promotional video screening in 75 cinemas in Madrid featuring the voice of actor Ramon Langa, best known for the Bruce Willis Spanish voiceovers.

Infrastructure investment THE Almeria Council president was in the Levante area of the province last week to see firsthand how works are coming along on infrastructure projects in Antas, Bedar and Mojacar. The provincial government has invested around €1 million in improvements to water supply networks and country lanes in the three municipalities, which Javier A Garcia said would ‘improve residents’ living standards.’ In Antas, nearly €120,000 of works on rural roads are already underway, and €200,000 works on water infrastructure are due to start shortly. Garcia visited two of the three projects in Mojacar, which together add up to an investment of nearly €600,000; the widening of the village’s main Avenida Paris and upgrades to

More than three kilometres of pipes are being replaced in 10 streets in the El Palmeral area: Camino de la Rumina, Calle Oran, Salvia, El Palmeral, Arenal, Camino de Los Gurullos, Calle Cuesta Almeces, Camino Huertas de Abajo, Callejon en
Huerta de las Parras and Calle Melodia. Further works on the water network in La Parata are also planned. The construction of a skate park next to the municipal football ground has already started. The provincial authority is financing the €140,000 facility for skaters and skateboarders.
Music school moves A MUSIC school in Huercal-Overa is closer to becoming a reality, following the town hall’s award of the construction project to the company Dizu SL. The local authority is investing just over
€850,000 in the Martin Alonso Municipal Music School project; the plan to build a new modern building in Calle Murcia next to the Cura Valera Institute and the sports grounds.

All set for carnival CARNIVAL is just the around corner, and Cuevas del Almanzora is all set for more than a week of celebrations. Cuevas mayor Antonio Fernandez and Festivals councillor Ana Maria Castro unveiled the winning carnival poster design and programme of events last week. Running from March 2 to 9, highlights include mask competitions, dances and grand processions. “Carnival in Cuevas is one of the biggest in the region, and designed for everyone’s enjoyment,” the mayor commented. Jose Miguel Torrecillas came first in the poster design competition, his design winning the most votes on the council’s social media pages.
Time saver DRIVERS in Vera now have the option of using their mobiles to pay for parking in blue zones, thanks to a new free app. Speaking at the presentation of the El Parking app last week, Vera mayor Felix Lopez said the council is “backing the most advanced public parking system on the market, with the aim of modernising and adapting the municipality with new digital tools to make our residents’ and visitors’ lives easier.” The app will save drivers time as they won’t have to look for a parking meter or worry about having change. Other advantages of the new system, are that it lets users know when the ticket runs out, and gives easy access to invoices and receipts. Vera Council launched a campaign to inform residents and visitors about the innovation, publishing and distributing leaflets and putting up informative stickers on parking ticket machines.

Works in progress INFRASTRUCTURE improvement projects are underway in Huercal-Overa. In the Calvario area, 759 metres of new water pipes are being installed, and a number of roads resurfaced as part of an €800,000 project coming under an Almeria Provincial Council and Huercal-Overa Council plan. Visiting the works last week, HuercalOvera mayor Domingo Fernandez said the investment would ‘bring to an end to the problems and cuts caused by old, deteriorated installations in many areas’ and ‘improve
residents’ daily lives.’ In Los Menos works are in progress on a new roundabout, which the mayor said will improve traffic flow. The project also includes creating a nearby children’s play area on a municipal plot. The mayor said the works were ‘necessary,’ and met Los Menos residents’ demands. The more than €300,000 infrastructure project will also involve resurfacing a number of roads.
Budget go-ahead CUEVAS DEL ALMANZORA Council has given the go-ahead to its 2019 budget. The local authority said the budget is based on the principles of stability, financial sustainability, spending regulations, efficient allocation of resources and transparency, and that major projects are a priority. These include the indoor swimming pool, improvements to municipal parks and improving energy efficiency. Economy and Finance councillor Maribel Alarcon said the administration aimed to meet residents’ needs while reflecting the fi-
nancial reality. She referred to issues like improving the access to El Alhanchete, resurfacing roads in outlying areas, creating a cycle lane connecting the municipality’s sports facilities and improved access to public buildings, as important. The budget also sets aside resources for job creation schemes. Expenses are put at €10.2 million. The council said it expects to reduce the municipal debt in this financial year to €2 million. Alarcon maintained the administration has since 2015 ‘worked with the aim of making Cuevas a more
dynamic town’ for both local residents and visitors, ‘so they see it as an attractive destination, and this at the same time improves the town’s economy.’ The councillor said the administration had tried to ensure council resources and funding from other administrations reached Cuevas town and the outlying areas, going towards infrastructure, beaches, schools, health facilities, promoting sport, culture and tourism, backing sustainable urban development and equal opportunities, and supporting the commercial sector.

The music festival raised €6,233.97 for the Mojacar Area Cancer Support (MACS), a charity providing invaluable assistance for cancer patients, survivors and carers across the region. Shannon Kay Edwards, MACS vice-president and granddaughter of the charity’s founder, the late Elaine Brown, described it as an ‘absolutely amazing’ total. Dancers living the dream Shared honours YOUNG dancers from Cuevas del Almanzora are living their dream. Four groups from the municipal music, dance and theatre school have qualified for the national final of the Live your Dream competition in Avila next month. The local classical and Spanish dance students were among more than 400 youngsters taking part in the first phase of the competition in Valladolid. For
most of them it was the first time they had participated in a contest of this kind, adding to their excitement. Dance school director Belen Lopez underlined the ‘hours of sacrifice, sweat, tears, rehearsals, teamwork and happiness’ behind the dancers’ achievements, adding it was their determination and attitude which above all else had got them where they are.
ALMERIA Provincial Council President Javier A Garcia and Bedar mayor Angel Collado shared the honours of laying the first stone of the new municipal multiuses centre. The provincial council is funding construction of the €240,000 facility, which the Bedar mayor said would become “the centre of the municipality’s social and cultural life.”

A warm welcome THE Dames in Huercal-Overa received a warm welcome when members visited the ‘sensory’ room set up by the ASTEA Association for Almeria families affected by autism spectrum and pervasive development disorders in collaboration with the local council. The Dames had donated €500 directly to the non-profit association and a further €500 directly to Huercal-Overa Council for the initiative; essentially a therapeutic space with a variety of equipment and objects to aid sensory development, and used as therapy for children with special needs, such as limited communication skills.

The Dames had raised the money back in the summer from a hugely successful treasure hunt. The ASTEA staff and HuercalOvera mayor Domingo Fernandez were keen to show their appreciation for the gesture, guiding members around the sensory room, and presenting them with a thank you slate and a gift of a pretty planted basket. Dames in Huercal-Overa meet on the third Wednesday of the month at 10.30am at the Hotel Rural Sabor de Miguel, and all are welcome to attend. The Dames also organise social activities.

Beth has been in the business for 31 years, opening her very first salon and barber shop in Scotland in 1989, and relocating to the Costa Almeria at the beginning of 2005. Beth is no stranger to Dames in Turre, and at this meeting she will be explaining the differences in shampoos and conditioners for all hair types and will be available to answer any questions. SPAIN is in the top 15 countries in Europe for the amount of speed radars on its roads, according to figures from Statistica which showed there was a total of 1,738 or 3.4 per 1,000 square kilometres.
Wage call THE UGT trade union has said that Spanish economic growth is high enough and inflation low enough to allow for wage rises of more than 2 per cent in line with agreements between themselves and companies.
Bird app AN app which lists some 563 Spanish bird series has been relaunched with new features including location of the best watching spots, with Spanish Ornithological Society’s Birds of Spain available free for iPhones and Androids.
DROPPING: Several Spanish towns have seen their populations fall. GROUPS campaigning for regions where the population has fallen, have said they will stage a protest in Madrid on March 31 to call for government action on the issue. A total of 14 groups from provinces across Spain are set to demonstrate in Madrid’s Plaza de Colon. The rally has been dubbed the Revolt of Empty Spain, with Aragon’s The Other Guadalajara and Castilla-La Mancha’s Paisanos de Sanco among those set to take part. The groups said in a joint statement they would protest against a lack of investment and what they claimed was the ‘progressive dis-
mantling’ of residents’ basic rights. The Other Guadalajara said: “What has been invested so far, and how it has been invested, has not resulted in the reversal of the trend towards zero inhabitants which we are on.” It comes as National Institute for Statistics (INE) figures showed there were 1,360 towns with less than 101 residents as of January, up from 1,319 at the start of 2018. The equivalent figure was 1,036 10 years ago. Territories Minister Meritxell Batet previously said that depopulation is the ‘biggest challenge’ facing Spain.
Latest wine route member TORO has become the latest Spanish town to be added to the country’s official association of wine producing areas. The town, in Zamora Province, Castilla y Leon, joined the Spanish Association of Wine Cities after the group approved its bid at a meeting on Friday. Toro has joined its Wine Routes list which another 29 towns and cities are members of. More than 600 towns and 2,000 companies are members of the association.
Race claims HUNDREDS of protesters from Spain’s Chinese community gathered at BBVA’s Madrid office to demonstrate against the mass closure of some acounts which they claimed was racist, but which the bank said was done to comply with money laundering rules.

Cocaine haul at sea A DRUGS network has been smuggling cocaine into Spain on cargo ships, police revealed after a 15-month investigation. A ship carrying a 3.3-ton consignment of cocaine with a â‚Ź100 million street value was recently intercepted almost 288 kilometres off the Portuguese coast and escorted into Setubal harbour. Here, the Guardia Civil and National Police officers, together with officials from tax authority Hacienda who planned the joint operation, were waiting for the Panama-registered ship. It was flying no flag when it was intercepted, but eight of the 11 seamen who were arrested were Ukrainian, one was Georgian, one Dutch and another French. Sources close to the investigation later explained that the crew were no more than subcontractors, engaged to transport the cocaine. The operation was launched in November 2017 following an interchange of information between Spanish units that fight the drugs trade and organised crime. These indicated that at least once a year an international network was bringing huge quantities of South American cocaine into Spain aboard a cargo ship and later transferred the drugs to smaller, faster and less conspicuous boats. The ship had been watched throughout its journey and investigators decided to strike while it was still some distance from the coast and before the cocaine could be offloaded.
Royal trip KING FELIPE VI and Queen Letizia of Spain completed a two-day official visit in Morocco last week. The couple, guests of King Mohammed VI, arrived late Wednesday afternoon at Rabat airport, and were greeted by the Moroccan royal family before heading to the royal palace for an official ceremony. The two kings reportedly used the visit to sign bilateral agreements. Felipe and Letizia had postponed a planned trip to Morocco several times since they last visited the North African country in July 2014. Spain is Morocco's top trade partner and the two countries share close diplomatic ties.

AI OFFER: L’Horitzo students will be the first in Spain to have AI lessons.
AI in school first A SECONDARY school in Cataluña is set to become the first in Spain to teach its pupils about artificial intelligence (AI). L’Horitzo school in Barcelona, is due to teach the subject to third and fourth year pupils, from this year. Marc Oliveras, director of l’Horitzo, said there was no precedent in Spain for teaching AI to school students. “If we do not offer the knowledge of
AI to our students, we are not preparing them for the current reality of the world, not to mention the future,” Oliveras said. The school plans to task students with creating a project based on their studies of AI. The lessons are also designed to teach pupils how to manage data. Josep Curto, an expert in AI who works with the school, said working with AI would throw up questions relat-
ed to philosophy and ethics for students. It would also give them new maths and programming knowledge, Curto added. Any machine able to perceive its environment and act to maximise its chances of achieving goals is said to possess artificial intelligence. AI is now used extensively in fields including healthcare, the creative industries, advertising and economics and finance, among others.

No-deal measures SPANISH government officials are continuing to draw up measures to protect the rights of British expatriates and Spanish citizens in Britain in a no-deal Brexit scenario before elections. Officials with the Treasury and Development, Health and Labour Ministries are drawing up plans to be approved ahead of the dissolution of the Cortes on Tuesday March 5. Government sources said they were aiming to preserve existing arrangements for both British and Spanish citizens living in either country in the event of a no-deal withdrawal. Officials are assuming that London will offer similar guarantees to Spanish people living in Britain. Some measures have already been agreed between London and Madrid separately from ongoing EU Brexit talks. Officials are aiming to ensure that Spanish workers and pensioners in Britain will continue to receive welfare payments in the event of a nodeal. Spain is set to pay unemployment benefits to its citizens who are living in Britain and can prove they have worked there for at least 12 months. Pensioners are due to continue receiving payments as normal.
Deal wrangling By Joe Gerrard BRITISH government officials have continued talks with the EU in a bid to change the current Withdrawal Agreement as Westminster politicians seek to influence the final outcome. Brexit Secretary Stephen Barclay travelled to Brussels on Monday for talks with EU chief negotiator Michel Barnier. Department for Exiting the EU sources said the meeting was productive, but that Brussels remained sceptical about proposed alternatives to the Northern Irish backstop. The mechanism designed to prevent a hard border falling between Northern Ireland and the Republic if future talks break down, continues to be a sticking point for some MPs. EU blocks Puigdemont event THE head of the European Parliament has refused to authorise a planned event featuring former Catalan President Carles Puigdemont and his successor over security concerns. A spokesperson for Antonio Tajan said the event, organised by Flemish nationalist MEP Ralph Packet, posed a high public order risk at the EU Parliament building in Brussels. “The analysis has concluded
that the threat to security posed by the event could not be controlled by Parliament security,” the spokesperson added. Puigdemont was due to appear alongside current Catalan President Quim Torra for a conference on the ongoing trial of those charged in connection with the region’s 2017 interdependence push. Puigdemont fled to Belgium after also being charged and has lived there since.
Facial recognition cash points arrive ONE of Spain’s largest banks has become the first in the world to introduce cash points which allow withdrawals with facial recognition technology rather than PIN numbers. CaixaBank launched the new cash machines on Thursday. They are designed to give depositors a better service and improve security, the bank said. The system was developed with technology companies Fujitsu and FacePhi. A camera in the cash machines scans 16,000 points on the depositor’s face to verify if they are the account holder. Four CaixaBank branches in Barcelona now use the system.

Airport booze ban call TOURISM bosses and police have called for a ban on alcohol sales at airports and on flights to Spain to put an end to ‘drunken tourism.’ UK and Spanish travel trade leaders met in Mallorca to try and tackle the problem which has led to negative press for the holiday hotspot island. Among some of the measures proposed was that passengers shouldn’t be allowed to walk down the drinks aisles in the duty-free shops as part of a campaign to get young people away from linking holidays with getting drunk. One police chief addressed the meeting saying: “We have already banned smoking. People can’t light up for three hours when flying from the UK to Spain so why do they have to drink? What are we waiting for? “Alcohol should be banned on flights and at airports. The only thing you see is the selling of alcohol at Palma airport, it’s a shopping centre where alcohol is sold.” The seminar was held under the

New fighter jet deal SPAIN has joined with France and Germany on a project to build the next generation of European fighter jets. Spanish Defence Minister Margarita Robles signed up to the project on Thursday during a meeting with her French and German counterparts Florence Parly and Ursula von der Leyen respectively. It comes after Spain first made moves to join the programme, known as the New Generation Weapons Systems (NGWS), in December. Robles said Spain was joining the project on equal terms with France and Germany. It was an opportunity to modernise Spain’s air force, the defence minister added. The aircraft set to be designed is due to replace Eurofighters and F-18s currently in service in the Spanish air force and in those of other European countries.
Spain’s ‘most active’ thieves POLICE have arrested a group of four men labelled, ‘the most active burglars in northern Spain.’ The Guardia Civil in Oviedo, northeast Spain, detained the men under ‘operation Mexico,’ after they were suspected of carrying out more than 30 crimes. The accused, aged between 25 and 35, allegedly targeted houses in rural areas, often in the middle of the night. The group are said to have smashed through doors or windows before stealing cash and jewellery, leaving behind any other items too difficult to hide. Benefits of the Padron By Mark Nolan IT is sometimes considered nothing more than an administrative bind, but there are many positive reasons why we should all make sure that we are on one key local register; the padron at the town hall. The padron is the municipal register which aims to give a true overview of the people who reside in a town. It is a mandatory requirement, but also ensures sufficient funding for all public services. It is also essential for foreign residents wanting to make their status entirely legal and above board in Spain, and, depending on your local town hall, gets extra benefits for those on the register. These can include discounts at sports centres, pensioners’ days out, and even free bus travel. By registering on the padron we advise the local council that we are living in the property under their administration. This then ensures they provide such necessary services as waste collection, for example, and policing. The town halls submit the information on their records to the central
GET REGISTERED: Being on the Padron can have additional benefits. government, which then ensures funding is provided for the correct number of people living in the area. However, the information goes even deeper than that. Every town and municipality in Spain has a status, and that
status is derived from the number of people officially living there, derived from the data provided by the padron. A town with more than 100,000 residents is classed differently to one with fewer registered on the padron.
That status is then reflected in such matters as the total number of councillors who sit in authority, whether national resources such as the Guardia Civil can be allocated to the area, and more importantly, the overall budget
from central government. Local taxes are collected by the town halls and invested in services which ensure the running of the municipality, but these funds are not enough to cover all services, and so are supplemented by the regional and national governments, regional authorities being responsible for education, for example. Although we can understand that towns of differing populations should be treated differently based on the total population figures, the actual amount of funding differs based not only on the population number, but also per capita, and so, as in our example of a town with more than 100,000 people, the actual investment from the national government increases based on the total population, and then is higher per person for larger towns. The padron should be updated periodically; this is an almost automatic process for those involved in such activities as registering for schools, but should be done by everyone in order to ensure that the correct funding is provided and ensured for all local services.

EU payments would probably end, as would free movement of people, meaning UK citizens would lose their automatic right to live and work in any European country. The UK would be free to make its own rules and regulations, and negotiate their own trade deals with countries around the world.

The woman was found dead with multiple stab wounds after she had allegedly been in a romantic relationship with the man for around four months. Lawyers accuse the man of ‘repeatedly,’ stabbing his victim ‘with an evident desire to end her life.’ Prosecutors also allege the injuries the woman sustained, ‘increased the victim’s suffering,’ as the mortal blows were only struck ‘towards the end of the attack.’ They claimed she had 45 puncture wounds, 13 cuts, and 47 ‘stabbing and gouging wounds.’ These were located on various parts of the woman’s body, including her abdomen, back, limbs, chest, and face. Bank: bubble not brewing AN economist at the BBVA bank has said the property market is not entering bubble territory and added rising prices were an adjustment following the last crisis. Miguel Cardoso, of BBVA Research, said rising prices were part of a cyclical recovery process following a “very significant” reduction in prices in the wake of the 2008 recession. “There is no property bubble but there is a process of adjustment which is normal for a sector that saw prices fall a lot during the crisis,” Cardoso said.

Santander-IBM tech agreement
Work contract concerns SPAIN has the highest proportion of people employed for six months or less compared with 18 European countries, according to the UN’s work agency which said such contracts harm workers. Figures from the International Labour Organisation (ILO) and the EU’s Eurostat statistics office showed around 60 per cent of Spanish temporary contracts in 2017 employed workers for six months or less. Germany had the lowest proportional amount at about 10 per cent. The ILO said the rising use of temporary contracts was making workers

The report found the total number of workers employed on temporary contracts grew to 26.8 per cent of the entire labour force in 2017, the highest proportion since 2008. More than 85 per cent of Spanish workers employed on temporary contracts were in that situation because
they were unable to find full time jobs, the report added. Around 85 per cent of temporary staff in Germany worked on those terms by choice. A total of 34 per cent of women working on part-time contracts did so to spend more time with their families compared to 16 per cent of men. The ILO found wages in the 52 countries studied always grew below 2 per cent from 2000, slowing further to 1.2 per cent in 2016 and 0.8 per cent in 2018. Real wages fell in both Spain and Italy in recent years, the report stated.
SPANISH bank Santander has signed a deal worth €620 million with computer company IBM to boost its digital transformation plan over the next five years. David Soto, general director of IBM for Santander, said the deal was designed to help the bank comply with regulatory and security needs and develop new ways of serving customers. IBM said: “The agreement will help Santander evolve towards an open, flexible and modern technological environment.” Santander currently spends around €2 billion a year on improving technology.

SLOWDOWN: Eurozone GDP grew in 2018 THE eurozone’s combined gross domestic product (GDP) grew by 1.8 per cent in 2018, the lowest level since 2014 according to EU data. Figures from the EU’s Eurostat statistics office showed eurozone output grew by 0.2 per cent in the final three months of last year compared to the previous quarter. GDP grew by 2.4 per cent in 2017. There was a growth of 1.2
per cent year-on-year from the fourth quarter of 2017 to that of 2018, data showed. Employment grew by 0.3 per cent in the fourth quarter of last year and by 1.4 per cent during the whole of 2018. The European Commission (EC) has forecast a 1.3 per cent growth for this year, followed by 1.6 per cent in 2020.

Hispasat stake sale deal ROAD management company Abertis has reached a deal with energy firm Red Electrica to sell its almost 89.7 per cent stake in satellite maker Hispasat for €949 million. The sale was made with the agreement of the current government. It now awaits approval from competition watchdogs in Spain and Portugal, according to company sources. Jordi Sevilla, president of Red Electrica, said the
deal was good for the company. “We have closed the deal with a lower price than Abertis requested,” Sevilla said. Hispasat said the deal allowed them to expand their communications offering and opened the door for expansion into Latin America. Italian firms ACS and Atlantia, which own Abertis, are reportedly planning to use the money from the deal to pay off debts.

MEXICO’S Cemex construction company has offered to relocate almost all 188 workers who faced job losses after the closure of two Spanish factories. The firm reached an agreement with trade unions under its employment regulation file (ERE) issued after the closures of plants in Mallorca and Almeria Province were announced. The company said it was restructuring its Spanish operation in order to make it viable in the long term. The deal is set to see workers offered the chance to move to plants in the provinces of Alicante, Valencia, Toledo, Tarragona and Zaragoza. Cemex has also agreed to pay €900 per year in compensation to affected workers as part of a wider social support plan. The closures came amidst a fall in demand for construction materials reported by the Oficemen cement manufacturing association. They also come ahead of new EU emissions regulations due to come into force in 2020.

New energy rules SPAIN’S National Commission of Markets and C o mp etitio n (C N M C ) watchdog has drawn up 13 new regulations for th e e n erg y s ec tor a fte r lawmakers approved the creation of more rules last week. CNMC is planning to introduce new rules on the calculation of energy transfer and distribution c o s ts , th e o pe ra tion of the wholesale electricity market and the manageme n t o f n atura l ga s movements. It c o mes a s the C ongress of Deputies approved a government decree granting the CNMC new powers to supervise e n erg y ma rke ts w hic h have broadened the scope of its remit. market watchdogs to be completely independent. It is set to see the CNMC oversee the payment, storage and distribution of electricity and natural gas throughout Spain and the internal markets for both. The new rules propose standards for compensation methods for firms in t he i nt er nal m ar ket , as well as remunerations. Prices and tolls are set t o be appr oved by t he CNMC after it has approved methodologies, according to the regulator. The CNMC was created in 2013 as the successor to the National Competition Commission. It regulates all markets to prevent them from being monopolised and supervises energy, electronics and communication, rail and ai r por t pr i ces and postal services.

However, I couldn’t allow the only subject which has actually managed to push Brexit off the front pages to pass by without sticking in my own three penny’th. Let’s get one thing absolutely clear. The only reason for the entire furore surrounding this ungrateful piece of pathetic humanity is the fact that the bunch of psychopaths she chose to show her allegiance to, actually lost the battle. Had they won, she would now be sitting in some Daesh caliphate, living the life of Riley as a baby factory for future Daesh terrorists. Unfortunately, for her and her murderous associates, this didn’t happen. As usual it is the British government who are initially responsible for this whole disgraceful episode (which also includes the hundreds of traitorous toerags now wheedling their way back into the UK under the utterly ridiculous and intelligence insulting excuses that they ‘only went for humanitarian reasons’). If, at the outset of this conflict, MPs had faced their responsibilities and passed firm legislation, clearly ruling that all those who decide to take sides with enemies of the UK and

Pity the law was rescinded, perhaps they would have thought twice about returning if the outcome of a trial could result in them dangling at the end of a rope! And (natch!) the whole situation has brought out the snowflakes in positively blizzard proportions. Well I’ve only one question for these particular naive numbskulls. What will they say to the relatives of the loved ones and victims of any future attack perpetrated by either the ‘returners’ or those they have subsequently managed to radicalise with their warped doctrines? Will they take part of the responsibility? Of course they won’t. Well have no doubt, should they succeed, these pathetic ‘do-gooders’ who would sacrifice the country to anyone with a convenient sob story, will be partially responsible and frankly this ol’ boy wouldn’t like to have anything of that ilk on his conscience. Bergerac rebooted… Nakedly anti-Brexit
Richard Shanley THE programme, which ran for nine series from 1981 until 1991, starred John Nettles as detective sergeant Jim Bergerac who later became a private investigator. Based on the island of Jersey, the BBC show is being revived by Artists Studio, backed by Endemol Shine UK and Jersey-based Westward Studios. They are presenting it as a commission for Paramount Network International’s channels outside the US. However, there has been no indication as to who will play the famous detective. Nettles himself went onto play a police detective in another crime show, Midsomer Murders. The Bergerac remake will be updated for the modern day, with ‘contemporary stories of the week’ and a ‘strong serial spine,’ said Gub Neal, Artists Studio’s executive producer.

International Women’s Day 2019 A global push for gender equality By Tara Rippin FOR more than 100 years, International Women’s Day (IWD) has celebrated women’s achievements, from political to social, while calling for gender equality and making a positive difference for females. And this year’s theme #BalanceForBetter, is again a nod to the global push for professional and social equality. Described as a ‘business issue,’ the aim of the slogan is to encourage gender balance in boardrooms, in the media and in wealth as a way for economies to thrive. First observed in 1911, IWD is now recognised each year on March 8, and is not specific to one group, but brings together women’s organisations, governments, corporations and charities. IWD is marked around the

The conference of over 100 women from 17 countries, representing unions, socialist parties and working women’s clubs greeted the suggestion with unanimous approval and International Women’s Day was born. It was celebrated for the first time in 1911 in Austria, Denmark, Germany and Switzerland on March 19. In 1913, it was decided to transfer IWD to March 8, and it has been celebrated on that day ever since. IWD was only recognised by the United Nations in 1975, but ever since it has created a theme each year for the celebration. In 2011, former US President Barack Obama declared March to be ‘Women’s History Month.’ IWD is still marked today because the original objective, to achieve full gender equality for women around the world, has still not been achieved. Figures show that globally, women’s education, health and violence towards women is still worse than that of men. And according to a 2017 report by the World Economic Forum, it could still take another 100 years before the global equality gap between men and women disappears entirely. As such, on International Women’s Day, women across the world unite to push the cause.

TECH FOR THE TIMID DRONE used to be what a visiting neighbour did if we weren’t quick enough to bar the doors and hide. Now there are an estimated 1.2 million of the things in America alone (the gadgets, not the people. Although…). And Europe’s not far behind. Name one parliamentarian who actually has hands-on experience with these increasingly ubiquitous gadgets and I’ll happily concede that the disruption inflicted on 140,000 Gatwick passengers at Christmas was just a once-off. Yeah, right. When a typically tech-dunce US senator actually had to ask Mark Zuckerberg how Facebook made money (‘We sell ads, Senator’), it’s a pretty safe bet we’re headed for an infestation of uncontrolled drone activity long before legislators actually grasp what it’s all about. European officials are certainly worried, but in Spain for one you still need no licence to do pretty much anything with your buzzy new toy; as long as you keep it be-

taking €72 billion, and Amazon is among the major retailers trialling how to drop its packages on us. Well not precisely, but you get the idea. Yet Gatwick was a wake-up call, amid an almost universal incredulity that one malevolent hobbyist, perchance a pimply teenager in a fetid bedroom, could inflict such devastation on one of the world’s busiest travel hubs. And get away with it, as this was being written. There have already been scores of global reports of aircraft elsewhere diverting or even suffering near-collisions with drones, a frightening thought when a €100 gadget could bring down a Boeing or an Airbus with virtual impunity. There’s the ultimate celebrity nightmare: paparazzi with drones. Or the epidemic of drones now dropping contraband into prisons. Right now I’m off to break it gently to my neighbour: she just wasted her money installing a two-metre fence to sunbathe au naturel.

The eagle has grounded UNLIKE the gadgets themselves, hobbyist drone prices certainly don’t go sky-high. Indeed less than €100 gets you your own wasp-like starter drone to amaze your friends and irritate your neighbours. A really good drone comes in at about four times that, while professional models reach a couple of grand. A mid-range drone can capture 4K video footage with ease, but most can only stay aloft for 15 or 20 minutes before their batteries give out. As for official anti-drone measures, such as above airports, the pioneering Dutch have now given up on what they hoped would be the world’s first really effective drone-disruptors; trained eagles. Their risk of injury on engagement was simply too high. Or perhaps it was all just too ‘talon’ order…

We have not yet seen the end of the soap opera that is going on in the UK Parliament, but it does not give me a feeling of firmness and United Strength. Barking mad! IT’S time that they brought in a law against dogs that constantly bark. Owners need to keep their dogs in check or fines should be put in place or have their dogs confiscated. A COSTA BLANCA town’s decision to hold a street art competition shows that graffiti once thought to blight local areas can be viewed as a legitimate creative outlet. Torrevieja’s Urban Design Competition is due to see 20 street artists compete for hefty cash prizes with their designs sprayed across the town. The competition follows a broader trend in Spain and across the world which has come to embrace what was once considered wanton vandalism as the art of the streets. Graffiti and murals gained respectability thanks to Banksy and other high-profile artists. But their subject matter shows the works are more than just potential attractions for visitors. Street art at its best can provide an insight into the concerns and views of people whose opinions are often marginalised or not heard in the wider public sphere. Street art comes in a variety of forms, from simple statements to works such as Banksy’s that act as a commentary on wider society. It has also been used, as the case of Torrevieja shows, to help revitalise areas where economic and social decline has bred discontent which often finds expression in graffiti. Street art acts almost as a diary tracking the thoughts and feelings of those who create it. The fact works stand publicly for all to see, rather than being tucked away in an art gallery, makes them part of the collective human experience we all share.

Better health in under a minute by Sally Underwood WE have all heard many times that the key to good health is moderation, regular exercise, and a good varied diet. But while this advice will certainly help us take care of ourselves, it can sometimes make getting healthy feel like a full-time pursuit. Luckily, there is a whole multitude of things we can do to look after ourselves which use up less time than it takes for the kettle to boil. These simple tips each take less than a minute, but could help you to feel better in the short-term, as well as promoting better quality of life in the long-term as well. One very quick but crucial health tip is to always remember to apply sunscreen to the tops of ears. While we should all be wearing an SPF every day - particularly living in Spain - most people forget to protect this
vulnerable area. This is a common place for skin cancer to develop, making it especially important to take the extra few seconds to do this. Next, we can all improve our overall health by flossing daily. A report from 2011 found that older adults who never flossed, had a 30 per cent higher risk of dying than those who did so daily. Flossing can help prevent gum disease; a common but major health issue which is linked to other serious illnesses, including heart disease, strokes, and diabetes. Another simple habit to get into is to stretch fully, and regularly. Animal-lovers will be used to the sight of their cats and dogs doing this often, and for good reason; stretching releases tension, improves circulation, and improves flexibility, making you more resilient to injury. Simple hygiene tips which take seconds can also save lives.
These common practices are more important now - during flu season - than ever, and mean we should be washing our hands more regularly and for longer. It is also vital to maintain hygiene levels at home, which means washing bedding and towels more regularly than normal, and replacing kitchen sponges frequently. If you hate the idea of waste, or are trying to cut down on your plastics use, why not try microwaving your sponges in a bowl of warm soapy water? This hack ensures clean, hygienic sponges without the need to replace them. And finally, don’t forget to regularly take a moment to check your body for any lumps or changes. Normandy Pork slow cooker style! A DELICIOUS dish enjoyed often here at Olive Tree Farm. This recipe I found some time ago on the BBC Good Food website. Although I have done all the preparing and frying off as per the recipe, I have on a couple of occasions, just chucked it all in and left it and it works perfectly! I also usually only add one of the apples at the start and add the other about an hour or two towards the end as I have found they disappear. 4-5 servings Ingredients 2 tablespoons olive oil 600g pork shoulder or pork cheeks, fat and sinew trimmed and cut into chunky pieces 1 large onion chopped 2 carrots chopped but chunky 2 celery sticks, cut chunky 200g pack smoked bacon lardons 250ml dry cider 2 eating apples 1 chicken stock cube 1 bay leaf 3-4 thyme sprigs
OLIVE TREE FARM was set up about four years ago with the intention of achieving a level of self sufficiency. We have poultry for meat and eggs, goats for milk, rabbits and small pigs for meat and harvest our 70 olive trees each year for oil. We also grow a variety of fruits and vegetables. 140g crème fraîche or cream 1-2 tbsp Dijon mustard, plus extra to serve (optional) 1-2 tsp cornflour, optional Method Heat half the oil in a large pan and brown the meat in batches. Only turn the meat
when it has a deep brown crust on the underside, as this will add lots of flavour. When one batch is cooked, tip it into the slow cooker and continue with the next batch, adding more oil as you need it. When all the meat has been transferred to the slow cooker, add the onion, carrots and celery to the pan and cook for five to 10 mins to just soften. Tip the veg into the slow cooker. Add the lardons to the pan and fry until crispy. Pour in the cider, bubble for 1 min, then tip the cider and lardons into the slow cooker too. Add the apples, stock cube and herbs to the slow cooker, pour in 400ml water, season well and turn the heat to Low. Cover with the lid and cook for six to eight hours until the meat is very tender. Turn your slow cooker up to High. Add the crème fraiche (or cream) and mustard to the stew and check the seasoning. Tip: If the sauce is thin, you can thicken it with the cornflour - ladle two spoonfuls of the sauce into a pan and bring to a simmer, mix the cornflour with one to two tsp cold water to make a paste, then stir it into the sauce. Once thickened, return the sauce to the slow cooker and cook for 10 mins more on High, stirring occasionally (or for five mins on the hob). Serve with mashed potato, green beans and extra mustard and thyme, if you like.

Spandau Ballet SCHOOL discos from 1980 to 1983 (do they still have those?) inevitably featured a track or two by Spandau Ballet. We considered it ‘girls stuff,’ and the boys would look on waiting for The Jam, The Specials and Madness. The girls would be waiting for Duran Duran, The Human League and the aforementioned Spandau Ballet. Formed in Islington in 1976 by Gary Kemp and Steve Norman, the band would go through several line up and name changes until settling on the ‘classic’ Spandau. Gary Kemp was the song writing talent and persuaded his brother Martin Kemp to join as the bass player. Gary knew that no matter how good the music, the band needed a

Electric plus points THE benefits of installing an electric vehicle charging point was the focus of the first Almanzora Electric informative day. Organised by the Almanzora Valley Tourism Business Association, the Olula del Rio event was aimed at hospitality sector companies and local authorities belonging to Almanzora Tourism. Vice-President of the ‘Pasate a lo Electrico’ (Change to Electric) national consulting entity on charging points and electric vehicles, Daved Perez,
explained issues like the initial investment required, cost analysis and return on the investment. There was also an opportunity for local council representatives to ask about the advantages of installing a charging point in their municipalities. “If we create a concentration of charging points now, the region will be setting a trend, it will be a benchmark for other regions, and the Alm a n z o r a Va l l e y w i l l b e k n o w n throughout Spain as a pioneer rural area in the development of electric ve-
hicle use,” Perez said. The Almanzora association president Oscar Muñoz encouraged business owners and mayors to have future vision and to become part of the project. Olula del Rio, Seron, Sierro, Laroya, Cantoria and Oria councils have already expressed an interest in the initiative. The aim is to create m o r e t h a n 2 0 c h a rg i n g p o i n t s t h i s year, making the Almanzora Valley the rural region with the greatest number per kilometre in the country.
Heart-themed quiz for defibrillator FACE (Fundraising in Arboleas, Caring for Everyone) staged a heart-themed quiz night to raise money for the purchase of a defibrillator for Arboleas. Thirteen teams of between two and six battled it out at Bar Kubatin under Hostel Meson in Arboleas, with quizmaster Richard Bond testing their knowledge on matters of the heart with 80 questions. The Willones won the ‘wooden spoon,’ while the winning team for the second year running was the Honey Pops led by Keith Lazell. They donated their €60 prize straight back to FACE. There was also a raffle for prizes donated by some of
FACE’s supporters and sponsors. The charity thanked the sponsors of each individual quiz round on the night: Angels Nursing Group, Jenni Rock of Glad Rags in Albox, the Sol Yoga Centre in La Cinta and the Almeria Bowling Centre in Los Llanos, Arboleas. A €20 donation from Mary and Dennis Kingshott brought the grand total to €467.70, a quarter of the amount needed to purchase a defibrillator. Good carnival turnout SOME 3,000 people turned out for last Friday’s junior carnival procession in Albox. Revellers included 1,200 pupils from the Virgen del Saliente, Velazquez and Medio Almanzora schools. Embracing the themes of games, toys and classic tales, children dressed up as astronauts, princesses, dinosaurs, soldiers and Disney characters. The procession ended at the Agua y Salud centre where the young audience were treated to a music and dance spectacular.
Group of Friends go back to school MEMBERS of the Almanzora Group of Friends went back to school last week. They were at the CEIP Virgen del Saliente primary school in Albox to read to the children in English, and to encourage them to join in with singing English nursery rhymes. Members reported they had great fun interacting with the five to seven-yearolds, and found the whole experience very rewarding. The initiative was the first following discussions with Albox Council at the inauguration of the Group of Friends’ new centre about how members can make contributions to the local community. Albox mayor Francisco Torrecillas told members he was particularly interested in supporting the municipality’s children and young people. Primary school head Victor Muñoz presented the group with a plaque made to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the school in 2016. The group is planning to put this up in their children’s corner where reading groups will be held.
PLAY TIME: Members read to the children in English and encouraged them to sing English rhymes. The group also plans to continue with the storytelling and nursery rhyme sessions at the school every Tuesday and Wednesday mornings, and invite

Job creation collaboration THREE projects in Macael will create more than 1,700 working days. The old health centre is being converted into an extension of the new municipal health complex at a cost of around €105,000. A second project involves improvements to several streets, costing just short of €50,000. A third focuses on smartening up public gardens and parks, tree pruning and repainting, with a budget of over €27,000. The projects come under the PFEA Rural Employment Development Plan, under which the national government pays salaries, the re-
gional Andalucia government funds materials and the Almeria Provincial Council contributes towards materials and pays project managements costs. PFEA provincial deputy Guillermo Casquet visited the health centre works last week. Accompanied by Macael mayor Raul Martinez, the deputy said the plan is a symbol of unity between the three administrations, which ‘generates employment, retains population and improves municipal infrastructure, which otherwise would be difficult to take on and carry out.’

Property purchases reach 10-year high IN 2018, a total of 515,051 properties were sold in Spain, an increase of 10.1 per cent from the previous year. It is also the highest number of sales registered in the last 10 years, according to data published by the National Statistics Institute (INE). The percentage of growth in property purchases has registered double digits for the last few years, for this reason experts in the real estate sector agree the market is entering a period of greater stability. Sales of second-hand properties have risen steadily for six years, but last year’s figures show a moderation in recovery in comparison to the three previous years, while sales of new builds reached their highest level since 2007. Director of Studies at Fotocasa warns the majority of property purchases last year were made by investors and individuals who already owned a home. She insisted the average person in Spain is still struggling to get onto the property ladder. Monthly figures December saw an increase of 3.8 per cent in purchases from the same month in 2017, reaching 33,831 operations. However, when compared to November’s figures for 2018, sales fell by 19.7 per cent in December, according to the INE. While experts believe this is partly due to the time of year, it is also believed the market was suffering uncertainty, as the High Court’s decision on who has to pay mortgage costs still hadn’t been made.

Pause for orientation STILL working on our new home, with the latest task being to fit the weather vane to the apex of the garage roof. Sounds easy, but it has to be absolutely plumb, and of course it must be oriented the right way. It had taken quite a battering with high winds at our previous home, so it needed some straightening and greasing as well. Considerable work was also required to create good fixings, remaking the holding brackets to ensure it was fully secure and ready to be fitted. But of course, things rarely go exactly as planned. However accurately I measured and marked the fixing points, the drill seemed to have a mind of its own, frequently kicking to one side; and why would I presume the garage wall to be vertical? Having eventually got the mast absolutely plumb, there was then the problem of reaching it to position the compass points and arrow (an eagle chasing a rabbit in our case) as the garage roof was of light construction and not to be walked on. Working to overcome the various diffi-
culties, I wondered if God sometimes looks on us in similar vein. The storms of life frequently give us quite a battering, leaving us requiring a bit of straightening out. How often we, like my drill, ‘kick’ to one side, following our own ways rather than God’s. How far we can stray from being plumb, or true! And yes, I guess we all have a tendency at times to be unreachable, and like my garage roof, object to being ‘walked on,’ which can leave us a bit uncertain of direction. So, for any of us who recognise these symptoms, perhaps it’s time we paused a while to allow God to reorientate and straighten us out. St Paul, in his letter to the Church at Colossae suggested they should spend their time thinking of positive and eternal things rather than negative or earthly passions like anger, malice, slander, foul language and lies and instead clothe themselves with compassion, kindness, humility, meekness, patience and love. Sounds like a pretty good way of reorienting ourselves to me!

Vehicle information sheets By Mark Nolan SPANISH documentation may be a daunting prospect to many of us to consider, but when it comes to motoring, the Director General of Traffic (DGT), is trying to make things easier by providing information in a variety of languages, including English. The only slight problem is that you have to have a little bit of an understanding of Spanish in order to find it. The DGT provide a wealth of information about driving on their website, dgt.es. If you go to their front page, look down the page, under the scrolling banner, until you see the word, ‘Tramites.’ The website is constantly evolving, but currently, the second option in the list is named ‘Hojas informativas de Tramites.’ Click on that sentence. Once the page has loaded, you will see a list of languages, and at the bottom, the word ‘Ingles.’ Click on this word (or any of the other languages if
you prefer French or German for example). Having clicked on your choice of language, for which we are going to assume is English, you are now presented with another list, in Spanish, which is again, constantly growing. There are some key phrases to look out for, the most important forms you might need, but feel free to look around, click them and save them all if you wish; they are all free, and they all have guidance notes so you know what to fill in, and the process for each procedure. The most important forms you are likely to need, we think, are: Cambio titularidad vehiculo: Change of vehicle ownership. Baja temporal. Alta del vehiculo en baja temporal: Temporary deregistration of a vehicle. Baja definitiva por traslado de vehiculo a otro pais: Definitive deregistration of the vehicle due to transfer to another country. Informe del vehiculo: Vehicle re-
port (important for checking the history of a vehicle before buying it). Duplicados y renovaciones del permiso de circulacion: Duplicates or renewals. Baja definitiva: Definitive deregistration. There are other information sheets and as you look around the website you might find other information in English too, including a very informative section explaining how to oppose a traffic fine if you genuinely weren’t the driver at the time, but we can deal with that another time; for now it’s for you to get downloading and learning.

ROAD TEST by Nick Fletcher SUZUKI’S revised Vitara comes with new engines, styling upgrades, added levels of equipment and safety features, and with a starting price of just €19,424 (£16,999) it stakes a strong claim to be the best value SUV in the class. A new front-end design gives the Vitara a more eyecatching upmarket look, and an upgraded interior underlines its credentials as a significant contender in a sector bursting with compelling rivals. The Vitara comes in three trim levels and manual and automatic gearboxes are available, along with four-wheeldrive on some models. There is a 1.0-litre three-cylinder Boosterjet engine and a 1.4-litre fourcylinder turbocharged unit both petrol - and my test model had the 1.0-litre unit which offers 110hp and six-speed auto gearbox. My mid-range SZT model has plenty of features including sat-nav, digital radio, smartphone connectivity, alloy wheels, roof rails, chrome detailing, auto headlights and rear parking camera. Safety kit includes seven airbags and LED daytime running lights. My lingering memory of the Vitara is what good value it is. While some mainstream rivals may have a little extra equipment and perhaps more badge image, they usually cost considerably more, and these days, perhaps more than ever, genuine value for money is what potential buyers are seeking.

CLASSIC STYLE, The first show in 1919. too-distant future.’ Automobile Barcelona will take place between Saturday May 11 - Sunday May 19 at the Fira de Barcelona in Montjuïc, celebrating the event for the 40th time, having showcased the industry’s novelties for the last 100 years. The first show under the name was held in September 1919 at the Palacio de Bellas Artes. A total of 58 exhibitors attended, highlighting Spanish brands Hispano-Suiza, a Swizz-Spanish collaboration which also manufactured aircraft engines for the First World War, and Elizalde, a
company also involved in aircraft engine production, later absorbed into the Daimler-Benz AG group. Although the original idea was to make the event annual, something which took decades to achieve, the second edition didn’t take place until 1922 when 33,410 visitors attended the event, including King Alfonso XIII, also a motoring enthusiast. It was declared an official event by the King a year later, when 413 exhibitors showcased their products to an ever-increasing 50,000 visitors.
A COMPLEX network of cables of more than 2.2 kilometres in length runs through the SEAT Ateca, which the company bravely compares to a ‘set of arteries, veins and capillaries of the human body.’ The cables form part of the electronic system which allows a central computer to read data from sensors around the vehicle and respond within ‘thousandths of a second,’ when some of the vehicle’s functions are activated, mimicking the circulatory and nervous system, but in a car. Don’t worry too much that you might be breathing life into a vehicle and the attachment of the human emotional
system will take over, it is still a machine, it is just a car, but it is now one of the most technologically advanced in its sector. Models such as the SEAT Ateca have more than 1,350 cables, that when placed in a straight line, would cover a length similar to that of a runway. They branch off in more than 30 circuits which ‘guarantee almost all functions of a car and transfer energy from one place to another, as happens with the blood circulating through the body,’ says Pedro Manonelles, engineer at SEAT. With up to 100 sensors and switchboards, these devices, capable of interacting with each other, work in a similar way to the human body. Just as the brain sends a signal for the hand to move and it does, this system ‘allows activation of functions such as stability control, parking proximity, driving modes, sound or the blind spot detector,’ he continues. Despite the complex net-
work, weight is kept to a minimum, with the Ateca’s system weighing in at around 40 kilograms. Although we might think this almost humanoid system is the most advanced on the market, it has had some 20 engineers in the past three years to thread the systems through the car to offer the most effective and ergonomic use, without compromising the functionality of the electrical system. Of course the obvious downside, which may well be an upside for some, is that it will be almost impossible for a general mechanic to fix a fault; making repairs, if they are needed, a potentially costly process, as they will only be able to be done by engineers with as thorough a knowledge of the systems as those who developed it, but with as much research and development they have invested, perhaps faults are a thing of the past and our cars will become intelligent enough to fix themselves, if needed.

LA LIGA may scrap Friday and Monday night matches as part of negotiations with the Spanish FA, according to national paper, Diario Sport. The two organisations have long-standing disagreements over a number of administrational issues, with league chief Javier Tebas eager to spread matches out across the weekend for TV purposes. But in the past, these two time slots have proven hugely unpopular with Spanish football fans and supporters of Rayo Vallecano and Alaves are among those who have staged protests. The move would take effect from next season onwards.

From August 24 to September 15, the La Vuelta Ciclista a España will take television viewers on tour through most parts of Spain. This year the contest will, for the first time, begin in Salinas de Torrevieja with three stages in total along the Costa Blanca. Taking place over three weeks and with 21 different stages, La Vuelta will cover much of Spain’s geography, especially the Mediterranean coast and a number of breathtaking mountain ranges.
REAL MADRID has reportedly threatened to leave top professional basketball division ACB unless the league officially recognises an ‘error’ the referees allegedly made in play that decided the outcome of the Copa Del Rey Final versus Barcelona. With eventual winners Barca down 92 - 93 in over t i m e, t he r ef er ees count ed a basket by Barcelona centre Ante Tomic, after calling Real Madrid big Anthony Randolph for a goaltending violation. Randolph had risen to block Tomic’s layup and made contact with the ball only after it touched the rim. Randolph went on to grab a rebound. After watching the Instant Replay, referees decided it was a goaltending violation and the basket was the game-winner that gave Barcelona their second Spani sh cup t i t l e i n a r ow. And now Real Madrid wants ACB to officially acknowledge the mistake. If not, then Spanish radio Cope’s El Partidazo show has reported that the club will ask the board members for the possibility of leaving the division. In the press conference after the game, Madrid’s basketball section director, Juan Carlos Sanchez, said that ‘it is the second year that there is a misfortune in the arbitration against Real Madrid.’ He added that ‘if the three referees have not seen that it is a legal block, something has happened that is wrong.’
