HERO POLICE: Officers allegedly prevented a woman throwing her child from the 10th floor.
Police ‘save baby from window fall’ By Sally Underwood TWO members of the National Police have reportedly saved the life of a three-yearold girl whose mother threatened to throw her from the 10th floor of a building. A 20-year-old Moroccan woman has been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder and assaulting a police officer following the incident. Police attended the building in Malaga City after neighbours reported hearing continuous crying from the small girl at around 2.05am on Saturday. After knocking on her
apartment door, police claimed a young, dishevelled-looking woman came to the door with a naked girl in her arms. When officers began questioning the woman, she reportedly became agitated and ran to the kitchen before trying to throw the girl out of the window. Police alleged they grabbed hold of the woman and child, whilst also preventing the suspect from suffocating the girl with one of her arms. During the struggle to free the child, one police officer was said to have been assaulted by the accused, who was later arrested.
The National Police claimed the woman’s apartment showed signs of neglect, with excrement and rubbish throughout the home. One officer reportedly found a dog locked in a cage surrounded by its own faeces in one of the rooms. The woman was transferred by ambulance to hospital for assessment with the
girl’s paternal grandmother who is said to be looking after the child.

Excess earth believed to be caused by Julen’s fall MEMBERS of the Guardia Civil’s Judicial unit said they believe the approximately 70 centimetres of soil found on top of Julen’s body was caused by the toddler’s fall and subsequent rescue attempts. Officers said they had examined ‘hours’ of footage taken by a robotic camera down the 71-metre borehole where the twoyear-old died in January ahead of the release of laboratory analysis of soil samples. Antonia Barba Garcia, the lawyer representing Julen’s parents, Jose and Victoria, said the results were ‘fortuitous’ and revealed police had found the soil was made up of material from within the borehole. Police told Spanish media they had reviewed 16 photographic files and 23 videos and revealed the inside of the well had ‘hard areas with smooth walls and softer areas with loose rocks and sandy material.’ The Guardia Civil said this type of earth, ‘could be easily detached’ revealing their camera had also caused ‘small detachments’ on its descent. Officers also revealed water leaks had caused the earth to become ‘compacted, forming mud,’ which also hindered rescue attempts to reach the boy. As a negligent homicide investigation takes place into the death of Julen, the assistant to Antonio Sanchez, the man reportedly responsible for drilling the borehole, is thought to have claimed his boss assured him he had covered the hole. The man reportedly told police Sanchez said he had blocked the opening with a ‘big, heavy’ stone, although he claimed he did not see this himself. The Junta de Andalucia this week revealed the rescue attempt to reach Julen had cost €700,000.

Councillor explains departure A GROUP of opposition politicians in Velez-Malaga are demanding answers from Mayor Antonio Moreno Ferrer over allegations there is a crisis in the council team. The Partido Popular (PP) has written to the council asking for more information over why former councillor Zoila Martin
resigned her position last week claiming she felt ‘discredited’ by the mayor. Ms Martin, who until now had been responsible for the Department of Social Welfare and Equality, said she had given up her post ‘for personal reasons and following disagreements with the mayor, Antonio Moreno Ferrer.’

THE wife of a British man who died in Nerja on a biking trip has announced she will demand answers from company Goodyear Dunlop. Mark Sears’ widow, who did not wish to give her first name, told one publication the 2016 trip on which her husband died had carried ‘risks.’ She claimed 42-year-old Mr Sears fell 65 feet to his death as he went offroad biking in Nerja, while ‘exhausted and under a lot of
stress.’ Mrs Sears claimed her husband had been giving a tyre demonstration when his bike left the road. Mark had worked for Midlands-based Goodyear for more than 27 years. Mrs Sears said: “He was a wonderful husband and father, we are lost without him. It has been a very difficult three years for the family, and while nothing will ever bring back Mark, we are hopeful we will obtain answers to the questions we have about his death, to help us come to terms with the loss.”
Steakhouse fire injures two A FIRE at a steakhouse in Alcaucin has reportedly left a man and a woman injured. The 45-year-old man and 43-year-old woman were taken to a medical centre to be treated for health conditions which have not yet been revealed. The event took place at around 10am on Saturday when witnesses reportedly warned of flames and smoke at the Ruygar restaurant on Avenida Buenavista in Puente de Don Manuel. Members of the Consortium of Firefighters, Public Company of Health Emergencies, Local Police and Guardia Civil attended the scene, after the blaze is said to have broken out on the restaurant’s ground floor.

The accused, aged 54 and 71, are said to have accessed a company’s emails and changed account number details to receive transfers themselves. They have been arrested on suspicion of fraud and money laundering.
Beach debt A CHIRINGUITO in Motril has been repossessed after a company leasing the beach bar allegedly fell behind on payments. The Chiringuito Oleaje on Playa Granada was rented out for 20 years to a company in 2013 for €1,300 a month, but the town hall will now revoke the lease after the business reportedly ran up a €150,000 debt.
Siesta theft POLICE in Malaga have arrested a 48-year-old Spanish man accused of burgling two shops in the city centre. According to police, the man carried out the crimes during the siesta break in the middle of the day while the businesses were closed before making off with €3,000.
Local poet TORROX Town Hall has unveiled a new ceramic mural honouring the poetry of local man Jose Sanchez. The 18th centurystyle piece also commemorates the town’s agricutural routes, as well as its local breadcrumbbased dish, migas. The mural, which is installed on Avenida de Competa, is by Axarquia artist Jose Antonio Rivas.

Unique language THE sign in this picture is written in Basque, one of Spain’s most unique and enigmatic languages which will be a talking point today (Thursday) as the world celebrates linguistic diversity. Basque and other regional dialects are celebrated every February 21 on International Mother Language Day. The day promotes multilingualism, the speaking of more than one language by a person or community. Basque is an ‘isolated’ language, meaning it cannot be traced to others currently in use or that have died out.
Spanish, as well as the Asturian, Catalan, Galician and Valencian, all have their roots in Latin and also have Arabic influences. Basque is thought to have developed before the spread of Indo-European languages across Europe and Asia which spawned the modern languages spoken in those areas today. Exact details of its origins and development are unknown. The first Basque book, a collection of poems called the Linguae Vasconum Primitiae, was published in 1545. The use of Basque was suppressed
Spruced up THE second phase of improvement works in the Los Fernandez area of Torre de Benagalbon are now complete, according to the council. The €124,464 investment saw pavements and public services improved. The works were financed by the Junta de Andalucia, Public Employment Service, Rincon de la Victoria Council, and Provincial Council.
Foot plan VELEZ-MALAGA’S mayor, Antonio Moreno Ferrer, has defended his plans to pedestrianise the town’s centre. The politician said the project would improve traffic to local businesses, improve trade, and enhance the area’s image. The project will culminate in an overhaul of the main square, Plaza de Las Carmelitas.
Award for rescue team THE Junta de Andalucia has announced it will award the medal of Andalucia to the team who worked to rescue two-year-old Julen. The award, one of the highest regional distinctions, was agreed by Junta minister Elias Bendodo alongside delegates from various councils in Malaga Province. The medal will be awarded next Thursday February 28, Dia de Andalucia (Andalucia Day). It will

New cemetery RINCON DE LA VICTORIA’S cemetery is set for expansion following an investment of €267,300. The project will see room for 400 new plots and 288 new mausoleums created in a 639.78sqm extension. The new space will be added to the northern side of the existing cemetery, increasing the plot to 3,599.78sqm. Francisco Salado, mayor of Rincon de la Victoria, said: “In this first phase we will ex-

ecute 50 per cent of the works. This is an essential project due to the shortage of free burial plots in this cemetery.” He added: “[This] will guarantee us enough space for deaths that occur in the next five years.” The works are set to have a construction time of four months. Rincon de la Victoria’s cemetery, which was built in 1960, has been extending continually since it opened.

Filming continues in Axarquia By Sally Underwood THE Axarquia towns of Rincon de la Victoria and Velez-Malaga are set to make it to the big screen after filming began for new Netflix series, Toy Boy. The Spanish-language show will star Jesus Mosquera as Hugo, a male stripper who becomes caught up in a criminal network. The filming in several locations throughout the towns is said to have caused a stir with residents and businesses, and is hoped to prove a tourism boost for Axarquia. Juan Peñas, vicepresident of tourism said the series, which will also feature Malaga, Fuengirola, Benalmadena, Torremolinos, Mijas, Marbella and Estepona, could bring visitors to the relatively unknown town of Velez-Malaga.

A CAR has crashed into a roundabout on Avenida Vivar Tellez in Velez-Malaga. Local Police who attended the scene, said the accident only resulted in damage to the vehicle and no injuries were reported. Police were responsible for organising efforts to remove the car and maintain the flow of traffic.

Wholesalers cast blame WHOLESALERS involved in a stand-off with fishermen in Caleta de Velez have accused fishing vessels of ‘driving away big buyers.’ Buyers claimed they incur costs repacking and transporting fish when they buy from the port, and so should be able to keep their 5 per cent discount on sales of more than 10 boxes. Meetings to try to resolve the situation have so far been unsuccessful with the two sides reportedly even further entrenched in their positions over the future of the discount, which was removed in January. According to the Fishermen’s Association, buyers suggested maintaining a 3 per cent discount on bulk purchases for the next five years, with the fishermen taking over the costs of the fish containers, the cost of which had until now been halved. In turn, the fishermen reportedly suggested reducing the previous 5 per cent discount by 25 per cent a year for four years until it is eliminated, and for containers to be paid for by buyers.

PROSECUTORS in Malaga are asking for 25 years in prison for a man accused of stabbing his partner to death a year ago in La Viñuela. The woman was found with multiple stab wounds after allegedly being in a relationship with the man for around four months. Lawyers accuse the man of ‘repeatedly’ stabbing his victim, ‘with an evident desire to end her life.’ Prosecutors allege the injuries the woman sustained, ‘increased the victim’s suffering,’ as the mortal blows were only struck ‘towards the end of the attack.’ They added: “She had 45 puncture wounds, 13 cuts and 47 stabbing wounds.” These were on her abdomen, back, limbs, chest and face. According to the Guardia Civil, the victim’s son saw the accused leave her house around 6pm. Police located the man in Marbella, where he was arrested and remanded in custody.

RESIDENTS and businesses in Nerja are reportedly complaining about the number of motorhomes parked up in the area surrounding El Plazayo beach. According to media reports, around 50 vehicles have been parked in the area for more than a month, as well as a further 30 in the car park near the Rio Chillar. Nerja’s mayor, Rosa Arrabal, explained the plots are controlled by the Local Police. Previous governing Nerja Council teams reportedly
erected signs prohibiting the vehicles in public spaces and erecting height barriers to prevent the motorhomes entering. Barriers were also in place in the public parking space near El Plazayo but are said to have deteriorated to the point vehicles can now enter. Mayor Arrabal told Spanish media: “The parking area is controlled by the police and I know they are going every few days to ask the motorhomes to move, since they cannot camp there.”

Officers claimed they found 502 pills, 83 bottles of injectables of different anabolic steroids, 312 syringes and €5,415 during raids at various properties reportedly linked to the crime. They alleged the man also sold the drugs through a network of distributors, one of whom was arrested in Malaga City while reportedly carrying 315
doses of anabolic steroids. The investigation began in Malaga after police intercepted this haul, leading them to begin investigating who the main dealer was. Their inquiries led officers to VelezMalaga, where they claimed the man sold the drugs alongside authorised products. During investigations, police carried out three raids, at two homes and one at a shop.

Rescue dog finds lost hiker A FRIGILIANA police officer and his Belgian Shepherd have located a 62-yearold Finnish woman lost near the Rio Chillar. Francisco Gallardo Bossini and his dog Reina set out to find the hiker after her concerned husband reported his wife had not returned from her walk. At around 6pm, the man told officers his wife had set out on a route above the Rio Chillar early that morning and had not returned despite it almost being dark. Francisco Gallardo said: “I t ol d hi m t o br i ng m e a sock from his wife and I gave it to the dog to follow the trail.” He added: “I left my car by t he bar r i er next t o t he quarry and I started walking, I was about an hour and a half, and thanks to my dog I found her. VANDALISM: Police said three bins were burned down last weekend.
Spike in vandalism by Sally Underwood POLICE in Torre del Mar are reporting an increase in the incidence of rubbish bins being set alight. Last weekend, officers said three containers were burned down in Velez-Malaga’s historic centre and on Torre del Mar’s Paseo Maritimo.
New builds ACCORDING to recent figures, Velez-Malaga Council has granted 893 licences to build new homes since 2017. Of that figure, 180 have been granted so far this year. The town’s mayor, Antonio Moreno Ferrer, said the council had given out 8,975 licences for various kinds of major works, minor building projects, and occupation permissions since 2015.
In addition, several dumpsters were overturned on Calle Custodio Puga. Between January and November last year, police reported 68 burnt out containers in Axarquia, while Velez-Malaga’s mayor, Antonio Moreno Ferrer, claimed the cost of repairing vandalism reached €1 million a year.

Ancient remains found A HISTORIAN and a lawyer have unearthed the remains of two ancient villages in Arenas and Corumbela. Professor and historian Valentin Fernandez, and lawyer Pablo Rojo, said they might have found some of the most important findings in the Axarquia area. The two villages, dating from the Caliphate period of the 10th and 11th centuries, were found in two small villages bordering Sayalonga; Arenas and Corumbela. Valentin Fernandez told one publication: ‘At first glance you can see many remains, the most important one being a large cistern.” She added: ‘We have named [it] Corumbela La Vieja.’ The pair said they were now investigating why the original villages appear to have been abandoned.

Caterpillar complaints SALOBRENA Town Hall has reportedly asked the Junta de Andalucia to intervene over the large numbers of processionary caterpillars around the town. The council said the mild weather is allowing nests to flourish, particularly in the Camino del Canal between the Monte de los Almendros urbanisation and near the Rambla de Molvizar. In the meantime, the council team said it has hired a specialist firm to treat 45 pine trees between La Caltea and Monte Almendros.
Domestic abuse protection THE Ciudadanos party in Rincon de la Victoria has proposed using a new type of computer software which can reportedly help protect victims of domestic abuse. The group announced they want the council to use the ARGUS CVG system, or a similar one, consisting of a phone app which can be activated without the need to log in to a phone, and sends out a GPS alarm to the police officers nearest to the victim. Elena Aguilar, spokeswoman for Ciudadano, said: “It is a sustainable system since there is no need for any more resources than the ones we already have, only the application needs be installed on the mobile phones of the police or in their vehicles.” She added the app was, ‘undetectable,’ and free for domestic abuse victims.

No-deal measures SPANISH government officials are continuing to draw up measures to protect the rights of British expatriates and Spanish citizens in Britain in a no-deal Brexit scenario before elections. Officials with the Treasury and Development, Health and Labour Ministries are drawing up plans to be approved ahead of the dissolution of the Cortes on Tuesday March 5. Government sources said they were aiming to preserve existing arrangements for both British and Spanish citizens living in either country in the event of a no-deal withdrawal. Officials are assuming that London will offer similar guarantees to Spanish people living in Britain. Some measures have already been agreed between London and Madrid separately from ongoing EU Brexit talks. Officials are aiming to ensure that Spanish workers and pensioners in Britain will continue to receive welfare payments in the event of a nodeal. Spain is set to pay unemployment benefits to its citizens who are living in Britain and can prove they have worked there for at least 12 months. Pensioners are due to continue receiving payments as normal.
Deal wrangling By Joe Gerrard BRITISH government officials have continued talks with the EU in a bid to change the current Withdrawal Agreement as Westminster politicians seek to influence the final outcome. Brexit Secretary Stephen Barclay travelled to Brussels on Monday for talks with EU chief negotiator Michel Barnier. Department for Exiting the EU sources said the meeting was productive, but that Brussels remained sceptical about proposed alternatives to the Northern Irish backstop. The mechanism designed to prevent a hard border falling between Northern Ireland and the Republic if future talks break down, continues to be a sticking point for some MPs. Sources said the EU was doubtful that the alternative arrangements proposed, including a basic free trade deal with technological solutions to avoid customs checks, were not viable. BREXIT EXTRA Car plant closure HONDA has announced it plans to close its Swindon factory in 2022, leading to the loss of around 3,500 jobs, with some workers blaming Brexit, while the company is believed to be concerned about future EU exports.
Food pledge TALKS: Barclay met with Barnier this week. Corbyn again called on Prime Minister Theresa May to look again at his alternative Brexit plan to break parliamentary deadlock. Labour’s plan would see Britain remain in a permanent customs union with the EU. May had previously ruled that option out, over concerns it could prevent Britain striking trade deals independent of the bloc. Corbyn’s call comes as four government ministers called on May to stop using the threat of a no-deal
withdrawal as a bargaining chip in EU negotiations. Energy suppliers don’t like freeze TWO of the largest suppliers of energy in Spain, Endesa and EDP, are appealing against an ongoing freeze on parts of electricity bills charged to consumers. They argue that the freeze on the section of the bill which covers the cost of distribution as well as subsidies for renewable energy is unfair as it does not take into
account the investments that these two giants have made since 2015. With renewable energy in particular, initial production costs are high because of the machinery and hardware required and the companies believe that as the freeze (on what is effectively 40 per cent of the average bill) has been in place for five years
that the High Court needs to consider whether it is fair, especially if they are to continue with their current levels of investment. In 2017, Endesa declared profits of €1.46 billion whilst EDP revealed that its profits for that year were €246 million. The figures for 2018 should be available by the end of February 2019.

Benefits of the Padron By Mark Nolan IT is sometimes considered nothing more than an administrative bind, but there are many positive reasons why we should all make sure that we are on one key local register; the padron at the town hall. The padron is the municipal register which aims to give a true overview of the people who reside in a town. It is a mandatory requirement, but also ensures sufficient funding for all public services. It is also essential for foreign residents wanting to make their status entirely legal and above board in Spain, and, depending on your local town hall, gets extra benefits for those on the register. These can include discounts at sports centres, pensioners’ days out, and even free bus travel. By registering on the padron we advise the local council that we are living in the property under their administration. This then ensures they provide such necessary services as waste collection, for example, and policing. The town halls submit the information on their records to the central
GET REGISTERED: Being on the Padron can have additional benefits. government, which then ensures funding is provided for the correct number of people living in the area. However, the information goes even deeper than that. Every town and municipality in Spain has a status, and that
status is derived from the number of people officially living there, derived from the data provided by the padron. A town with more than 100,000 residents is classed differently to one with fewer registered on the padron.
That status is then reflected in such matters as the total number of councillors who sit in authority, whether national resources such as the Guardia Civil can be allocated to the area, and more importantly, the overall budget
from central government. Local taxes are collected by the town halls and invested in services which ensure the running of the municipality, but these funds are not enough to cover all services, and so are supplemented by the regional and national governments, regional authorities being responsible for education, for example. Although we can understand that towns of differing populations should be treated differently based on the total population figures, the actual amount of funding differs based not only on the population number, but also per capita, and so, as in our example of a town with more than 100,000 people, the actual investment from the national government increases based on the total population, and then is higher per person for larger towns. The padron should be updated periodically; this is an almost automatic process for those involved in such activities as registering for schools, but should be done by everyone in order to ensure that the correct funding is provided and ensured for all local services.

Trade between the UK and the EU would continue, but with more restrictions and new rules on how it would work. No-deal If a new set of rules and regulations for a hard Brexit cannot be agreed, then the UK could leave the EU with a no-deal. In this scenario, the UK may have to defer to the World Trade Organisation rules on international trade when doing business with EU countries. UK exports would be subject to taxes and customs checks. The legal status of UK expatriates in Europe, and EU expatriates in the UK would be uncertain. Would people require visas? Would the price of food imports rise? Would business be thrown into chaos? Bank: bubble not brewing AN economist at the BBVA bank has said the property market is not entering bubble territory and added rising prices were an adjustment following the last crisis. Miguel Cardoso, of BBVA Research, said rising prices were part of a cyclical recovery process following a “very significant” reduction in prices in the wake of the 2008 recession. “There is no property bubble but there is a process of adjustment which is normal for a sector that saw prices fall a lot during the crisis,” Cardoso said.

Work contract concerns SPAIN has the highest proportion of people employed for six months or less compared with 18 European countries, according to the UN’s work agency which said such contracts harm workers. Figures from the International Labour Organisation (ILO) and the EU’s Eurostat statistics office showed around 60 per cent of Spanish temporary contracts in 2017 employed workers for six months or less. Germany had the lowest proportional amount at about 10 per cent. The ILO said the rising use of temporary contracts was making workers

The report found the total number of workers employed on temporary contracts grew to 26.8 per cent of the entire labour force in 2017, the highest proportion since 2008. More than 85 per cent of Spanish workers employed on temporary contracts were in that situation because
they were unable to find full time jobs, the report added. Around 85 per cent of temporary staff in Germany worked on those terms by choice. A total of 34 per cent of women working on part-time contracts did so to spend more time with their families compared to 16 per cent of men. The ILO found wages in the 52 countries studied always grew below 2 per cent from 2000, slowing further to 1.2 per cent in 2016 and 0.8 per cent in 2018. Real wages fell in both Spain and Italy in recent years, the report stated.
SPANISH bank Santander has signed a deal worth €620 million with computer company IBM to boost its digital transformation plan over the next five years. David Soto, general director of IBM for Santander, said the deal was designed to help the bank comply with regulatory and security needs and develop new ways of serving customers. IBM said: “The agreement will help Santander evolve towards an open, flexible and modern technological environment.” Santander currently spends around €2 billion a year on improving technology.

Worker ruling A SOCIAL court in Madrid has ruled that delivery company Glovo must reinstate a worker who was dismissed for striking after finding that they should have been classed as a full time employee and not a freelance autonomous one.

SLOWDOWN: Eurozone GDP grew in 2018 THE eurozone’s combined gross domestic product (GDP) grew by 1.8 per cent in 2018, the lowest level since 2014 according to EU data. Figures from the EU’s Eurostat statistics office showed eurozone output grew by 0.2 per cent in the final three months of last year compared to the previous quarter. GDP grew by 2.4 per cent in 2017. There was a growth of 1.2
per cent year-on-year from the fourth quarter of 2017 to that of 2018, data showed. Employment grew by 0.3 per cent in the fourth quarter of last year and by 1.4 per cent during the whole of 2018. The European Commission (EC) has forecast a 1.3 per cent growth for this year, followed by 1.6 per cent in 2020.

Hispasat stake sale deal ROAD management company Abertis has reached a deal with energy firm Red Electrica to sell its almost 89.7 per cent stake in satellite maker Hispasat for €949 million. The sale was made with the agreement of the current government. It now awaits approval from competition watchdogs in Spain and Portugal, according to company sources. Jordi Sevilla, president of Red Electrica, said the
deal was good for the company. “We have closed the deal with a lower price than Abertis requested,” Sevilla said. Hispasat said the deal allowed them to expand their communications offering and opened the door for expansion into Latin America. Italian firms ACS and Atlantia, which own Abertis, are reportedly planning to use the money from the deal to pay off debts.

MEXICO’S Cemex construction company has offered to relocate almost all 188 workers who faced job losses after the closure of two Spanish factories. The firm reached an agreement with trade unions under its employment regulation file (ERE) issued after the closures of plants in Mallorca and Almeria Province were announced. The company said it was restructuring its Spanish operation in order to make it viable in the long term. The deal is set to see workers offered the chance to move to plants in the provinces of Alicante, Valencia, Toledo, Tarragona and Zaragoza. Cemex has also agreed to pay €900 per year in compensation to affected workers as part of a wider social support plan. The closures came amidst a fall in demand for construction materials reported by the Oficemen cement manufacturing association. They also come ahead of new EU emissions regulations due to come into force in 2020.

Prices and tolls are set t o be appr oved by t he CNMC after it has approved methodologies, according to the regulator. The CNMC was created in 2013 as the successor to the National Competition Commission. It regulates all markets to prevent them from being monopolised and supervises energy, electronics and communication, rail and ai r por t pr i ces and postal services.

The only reason for the entire furore surrounding this ungrateful piece of pathetic humanity is the fact that the bunch of psychopaths she chose to show her allegiance to, actually lost the battle. Had they won, she would now be sitting in some Daesh caliphate, living the life of Riley as a baby factory for future Daesh terrorists. Unfortunately, for her and her murderous associates, this didn’t happen. As usual it is the British government who are initially responsible for this whole disgraceful episode (which also includes the hundreds of traitorous toerags now wheedling their way back into the UK under the utterly ridiculous and intelligence insulting excuses that they ‘only went for humanitarian reasons’). If, at the outset of this conflict, MPs had faced their responsibilities and passed firm legislation, clearly ruling that all those who decide to take sides with enemies of the UK and

And (natch!) the whole situation has brought out the snowflakes in positively blizzard proportions. Well I’ve only one question for these particular naive numbskulls. What will they say to the relatives of the loved ones and victims of any future attack perpetrated by either the ‘returners’ or those they have subsequently managed to radicalise with their warped doctrines? Will they take part of the responsibility? Of course they won’t. Well have no doubt, should they succeed, these pathetic ‘do-gooders’ who would sacrifice the country to anyone with a convenient sob story, will be partially responsible and frankly this ol’ boy wouldn’t like to have anything of that ilk on his conscience. Gatwick chaos a taste of what’s to come, predicts Terence Kennedy DRONE used to be what a visiting neighbour did if we weren’t quick enough to bar the doors and hide. Now there are an estimated 1.2 million of the things in America alone (the gadgets, not the people. Although…). And Europe’s not far behind. Name one parliamentarian who actually has hands-on experience with these increasingly ubiquitous gadgets and I’ll happily concede that the disruption inflicted on 140,000 Gatwick passengers at Christmas was just a once-off. Yeah, right. When a typically tech-dunce US senator actually had to ask Mark Zuckerberg how Facebook made money (‘We sell ads, Senator’), it’s a pretty safe bet we’re headed for an infestation of uncontrolled drone activity long before legislators actually grasp what it’s all about. European officials are certainly worried, but in Spain for one you still need no licence to do pretty much anything with your buzzy new toy; as long as you keep it be-
low 120 metres, fly it no further than 500 metres away, stay eight kilometres from airports, and keep at least 150 metres from buildings generally. Number of specific inspectors dedicated to enforcing these rules: zero. Sales are set to double annually worldwide, and certainly many will be used for entirely legitimate purposes. David Attenborough’s magnificent Dynasties series relied
heavily on drones, construction sites use them for safety, farmers inspect their land, mapping has been simplified, drones delivered 5,000 units of blood in Rwanda in 2017, and last year they’re said to have saved no fewer than 133 lives. The photographic industry is the biggest professional purchaser, followed closely by estate agents (yes really). By 2025, the global drone industry is predicted to be worth a breath-
taking €72 billion, and Amazon is among the major retailers trialling how to drop its packages on us. Well not precisely, but you get the idea. Yet Gatwick was a wake-up call, amid an almost universal incredulity that one malevolent hobbyist, perchance a pimply teenager in a fetid bedroom, could inflict such devastation on one of the world’s busiest travel hubs. And get away with it, as this was being written. There have already been scores of global reports of aircraft elsewhere diverting or even suffering near-collisions with drones, a frightening thought when a €100 gadget could bring down a Boeing or an Airbus with virtual impunity. There’s the ultimate celebrity nightmare: paparazzi with drones. Or the epidemic of drones now dropping contraband into prisons. Right now I’m off to break it gently to my neighbour: she just wasted her money installing a two-metre fence to sunbathe au naturel.
UNLIKE the gadgets themselves, hobbyist drone prices certainly don’t go sky-high. Indeed less than €100 gets you your own wasp-like starter drone to amaze your friends and irritate your neighbours. A really good drone comes in at about four times that, while professional models reach a couple of grand. A mid-range drone can capture 4K video footage with ease, but most can only stay aloft for 15 or 20 minutes before their batteries give out. As for official anti-drone measures, such as above airports, the pioneering Dutch have now given up on what they hoped would be the world’s first really effective drone-disruptors; trained eagles. Their risk of injury on engagement was simply too high. Or perhaps it was all just too ‘talon’ order…

Food trends & fad diets: overcooked and overegged
LOOK away now if you are of a nervous disposition. Do you know your pomegranate molasses from your kefir, your harslevelu from your pulled jackfruit? Well, if you’ve only just finished stockpiling the fridge with all that, now a new health fad has popped up; vinegar-based drinks. They’re supposed to reduce cholesterol, support the immune system, promote digestion and even help lose weight. Victoria Beckham reportedly enjoys a daily shot of apple cider vinegar, which maybe explains the facial expression? Fad diets are designed to fail, otherwise the industry would vanish. The solutions are simple, but they require discipline and self-control. As regards healthy eating, there’s no art to it, no science, nothing but simple common sense and a little knowledge. Restrict salt intake, avoid anything containing processed or refined sugars and reduce carbohydrate consumption favouring more vegetables, beans, nuts, lean meat, chicken and fish. Basically, no desserts other than fresh fruits. Simples! Just add - gulp - a bout of brisk exercise daily. As for food trends I’d like to see the back of, first up is the hipster obsession with communal tables; if I want to sit with other people, I’ll bloody well bring them myself! And pop-up
hipster restaurants whose crusade is to convince you that Uzbek cuisine is something you’ve been missing out on all your life (Plov, anyone?) And I can’t wait for this no-bookings trend to be over. A 90minute wait is essentially saying ‘We don’t give a toss about families, or anyone with a train to catch or a movie to see.’ And don’t get me started on never-ending, no-choice tasting menus, with dishes as local and seasonal as a polar bear in a bikini. With news of the return of ‘Crackerjack’ on TV and ‘Only Fools and Horses: The Musical,’ I’m not going even further and demanding a return to early closing days and the reintroduction of the Austin Allegro. But sometimes,

Mike Senker In my opinion Views of a Grumpy Old Man INTERESTING to see company bosses could face up to seven years in prison if they mismanage employee pension schemes, says Work and Pensions Secretary Amber Rudd. She wants a new offence of ‘wilfully or recklessly’ mismanaging funds. That’s great news isn’t it? But hold on a minute; in my opinion, and many others, the biggest mismanagers of pensions are the British government themselves. How many women were expecting to receive their pensions at the age of 60, only to be told it would not be happening until they were 66 thereby nicking approximately 60 grand off them each? It seems to me that 1950’s women have been used as a cash cow. Indeed, a previous chancellor said changing the pension age for women was the easiest way of saving money. Surely it would have been easier to increase the pension age of men and women starting their working life who would have plenty of time to make pension arrange-
ments, unlike the women now suffering the effects of two pension acts in the middle of their working lives. I agree it’s a great idea to keep an eye on rogue companies and their crooked bosses but to me the words pot, kettle and black spring to mind. I was listening to TRE the other day and that wonderful lady Myra from the Citizens Advice Bureau. They were chatting about Brexit, and as usual, she was giving brilliant advice. What intrigued me was the last caller of the day. This was a bloke who had lived in Spain for the last 25 years, and in his own words, was ‘completely under the radar.’ He has never paid any tax, never declared any income, worked for cash and wasn’t on the Padron. Now, don’t get me wrong, if that is the way he wants to conduct his life out here, good luck to him. I’m just fascinated that he called in and declared all this and asked what was going to happen to him. I don’t work for CAB but I’ll tell you what’s going to happen to you mate... nothing. You will still get away with paying nothing to the government because they will be too busy going after the people who filled in form 720 and are being terrorised by the Hacienda looking for their share, which they said they would never do!

The units include penthouses (‘aticos’) with roof terraces, normal flats with small terraces, and one, on the roof over the garage, has a small garden. We have had rainwater leakages from the roof terraces, damaging several flats. The owner of the flat over the garage has placed a small hut in the garden area with a washing machine inside. He has drilled a hole through the garage roof for his piping. All this was done without any permission from the community. We considered it ‘girls stuff,’ and the boys would look on waiting for The Jam, The Specials and Madness. The girls would be waiting for Duran Duran, The Human League and the aforementioned Spandau Ballet. Formed in Islington in 1976 by Gary Kemp and Steve Norman, the band would go through several line up and name changes until settling on the ‘classic’ Spandau. Gary Kemp was the song writing talent and persuaded his brother Martin Kemp to join as the bass player. Gary knew that no matter how good the music, the band

Bergerac rebooted… Nakedly anti-Brexit
Richard Shanley THE programme, which ran for nine series from 1981 until 1991, starred John Nettles as detective sergeant Jim Bergerac who later became a private investigator. Based on the island of Jersey, the BBC show is being revived by Artists Studio, backed by Endemol Shine UK and Jerseybased Westward Studios. They are presenting it as a commission for Paramount Network International’s channels outside the US. However, there has been no indication as to who will play the famous detective. Nettles himself went onto play a police detective in another crime show, Midsomer Murders. The Bergerac remake will be updated for the modern day, with

What have the gays ever done for us?
ALAN TURING: Recognised as a humanist in Uganda. because of over-population, and it asked: ‘Why shouldn’t homosexuality be seen as providing a viable option to over-population?’ I could have gone on to demonstrate that throughout history, gays have made enormous contributions to the betterment of humanity in a variety of fields, but I knew that would be pointless be-
cause one cannot engage intelligently with blinkered fools whose brains have been turned to oatmeal by religion. C o i n c i d e n t a l l y, i n t h e s a m e week I was delighted to learn that a gay man who played a key role in bringing an early end to the Second World War - Alan Turing is about to be recognised at a hu-
manist secondary school in Kanunga, Uganda. The school - which excludes all religion from its curriculum and encourages critical thinking among its pupils - is currently being helped by the US-based Brighter Brains Institute to raise money for an Alan Turing science laboratory. I assume most readers will be aware that Turing, an atheist, was the British scientist, who during the Second World War, cracked the German Enigma codes. His work is widely believed to have led to the war ending earlier than expected. But, far from thanking him for his invaluable contribution, the British authorities persecuted him for being gay. He was convicted of ‘gross indecency’ and committed suicide in 1954. The laboratory will complement two other Brighter Brains classrooms named after prominent British atheists; Richard Dawkins
and the late Christopher Hitchens. The man behind the scheme to promote freethinking among Ugandan schoolchildren is Robert Magara, Executive Director at Kanungu Humanist Association, who ditched his Christian faith after reading Professor Dawkins’ The God Delusion. Uganda, like many other African countries, is infested with foreign Christian missionaries, and needs more people like Magara to spread the message that progress can never be accomplished by promoting superstition, which serves only to fracture societies and engender intolerance. It was only recently that Uganda was contemplating introducing the death penalty for homosexuality, and I wrote a piece about a British evangelist from St Neots who had travelled to the country to support a proposed ‘Kill the Gays’ bill. Paul Shinners flatly denied having been involved in a Christian rally supporting the bill, and threatened to sue me for causing his Cornerstone Cafe to close due to demonstrations which followed my exposé. He went very quiet when a video surfaced showing him addressing the rally, and one can only hope he keeps his hateful mouth shut from now on.

International Women’s Day 2019 A global push for gender equality By Tara Rippin FOR more than 100 years, International Women’s Day (IWD) has celebrated women’s achievements, from political to social, while calling for gender equality and making a positive difference for females. And this year’s theme #BalanceForBetter, is again a nod to the global push for professional and social equality. Described as a ‘business issue,’ the aim of the slogan is to encourage gender balance in boardrooms, in the media and in wealth as a way for economies to thrive. First observed in 1911, IWD is now recognised each year on March 8, and is not specific to one group, but brings together women’s organisations, governments, corporations and charities. IWD is marked around the

In 1910, a woman named Clara Zetkin - leader of the Women’s Office for the Social Democratic Party in Germany tabled the idea of an International Women’s Day at an International Conference of Working Women in Copenhagen. She proposed that every year in every country there should be a celebration on the same day - a Women’s Day - to press for their demands. The conference of over 100 women from 17 countries, representing unions, socialist parties and working women’s clubs greeted the suggestion with unanimous approval and International Women’s Day was born. It was celebrated for the first time in 1911 in Austria, Denmark, Germany and Switzerland on March 19. In 1913, it was decided to transfer IWD to March 8, and it has been celebrated on that day ever since. IWD was only recognised by the United Nations in 1975, but ever since it has created a theme each year for the celebration. In 2011, former US President Barack Obama declared March to be ‘Women’s History Month.’ IWD is still marked today because the original objective, to achieve full gender equality for women around the world, has still not been achieved. Figures show that globally, women’s education, health and violence towards women is still worse than that of men. And according to a 2017 report by the World Economic Forum, it could still take another 100 years before the global equality gap between men and women disappears entirely. As such, on International Women’s Day, women across the world unite to push the cause.

And that the UK does not want to take responsibility for the future of Europe! That is not what I thought of your nation! We have not yet seen the end of the soap opera that is going on in the UK Parliament, but it does not give me a feeling of firmness and United Strength. Barking mad! IT’S time that they brought in a law against dogs that constantly bark. Owners need to keep their dogs in check or fines should be put in place or have their dogs confiscated. A COSTA BLANCA town’s decision to hold a street art competition shows that graffiti once thought to blight local areas can be viewed as a legitimate creative outlet. Torrevieja’s Urban Design Competition is due to see 20 street artists compete for hefty cash prizes with their designs sprayed across the town. The competition follows a broader trend in Spain and across the world which has come to embrace what was once considered wanton vandalism as the art of the streets. Graffiti and murals gained respectability thanks to Banksy and other high-profile artists. But their subject matter shows the works are more than just potential attractions for visitors. Street art at its best can provide an insight into the concerns and views of people whose opinions are often marginalised or not heard in the wider public sphere. Street art comes in a variety of forms, from simple statements to works such as Banksy’s that act as a commentary on wider society. It has also been used, as the case of Torrevieja shows, to help revitalise areas where economic and social decline has bred discontent which often finds expression in graffiti. Street art acts almost as a diary tracking the thoughts and feelings of those who create it. The fact works stand publicly for all to see, rather than being tucked away in an art gallery, makes them part of the collective human experience we all share.

All airport facilities should have strict limits on how much drink each person is served, or better still, ban alcohol from airports altogether. So to then see an ambulance trying to drop off a patient with heart problems, get a ticket because another car was blocking its access seems hard to comprehend; perhaps the result of a jobsworth with a deficiency in common sense. Steven Saunders FMCGB The Little Geranium La Cala de Mijas & Marbella www.thelittlegeranium.com ETON MESS is a traditional English dessert dating back to the late eighteen hundreds originating from Eton College. It was served at the Eton schools’ annual cricket matches and became famous when the English people discovered that they loved it and then related it to all things that anEnglish summer should be - whipped cream, fresh strawberries and good tennis or cricket! Now chefs love evolving recipes, Heston Blumenthal said that he couldn’t and wouldn’t change Eton Mess and concluded that although it looks messy that is where the tradition lies. I like Heston and his work but I saw this as a challenge and so I
went home and started messing about with meringues. I tried many different ways of serving them with cream and summer fruits to make them more attractive. Then I remembered my days at The Savoy in London where I had spent my training and I used to pipe Duchess Potatoes by the tray load for parties in the Lancaster suite. On one occasion I had piped over a thousand for an event hosted by Frank Sinatra and on another occasion a similar amount for the Queen Mother’s birthday party and it came to mind when I was holding the piping bag filled with the meringue mix! So I piped a tray of duchesslooking meringue nests standing tall and cooked them really slowly at 100c for about two hours. When I felt them they were hard on the outside as they

should be, but they weren’t cooked on the inside and so I scooped the inside out and discarded it thinking, back to the drawing board! Then it came to me, fill the gap (the scooped out meringue) with the fruit and cream and you will have a perfect looking meringue all neat and tidy, quite beautiful and then serve it at the table so the guest admires your work and then smash it in front of them and there you have Eton Mess! You can evolve it even more by making a huge meringue duchess nest for say four or more people and then add liquid nitrogen. When smashed in front of the guest it will add theatre, creating the wow factor, chilling the fruit and adding vapor. Now serve it as mushed up meringue with fruit and cream like the boys do at Eton and guess what… no wow factor! Heston is evolving and improving it but not really changing our
lovely Eton Mess. As always when I have spent hours in my kitchen playing, all the good results end up on the Geranium menu and although it’s a little early for summer fruits the Spanish raspberries I am getting are delicious and so I have been using them and the result has been great. My restaurant guests are loving the dessert so much that El Torreon restaurant (on the playa in La Cala) where I am also involved, wants it on the menu too!

AS the trial started of 12 members of Cataluña’s former regional government, protesters were out in force. ‘Self-determination is not a crime’ proclaimed a banner outside Madrid’s Supreme Court. But it is if it involves a Unilateral Declaration of Independence like Cataluña’s on October 27 in 2017. And it is if half the population doesn’t want it. And the bother, bile and brouhaha over the Northern Ireland backstop should be enough to conclude that dragging Cataluña into a similar quagmire would be criminally silly.
The millionaire bungler IT’S impossible to separate retired police chief Jose Villarejo’s name from the headlines. We now learn that in 2005 Villarejo supposedly agreed to remove some bothersome documents from Deloitte’s Madrid offices in Edificio Windsor for Francisco Gonzalez, BBVA bank president until recently. Vehicle information sheets By Mark Nolan SPANISH documentation may be a daunting prospect to many of us to consider, but when it comes to motoring, the Director General of Traffic (DGT), is trying to make things easier by providing information in a variety of languages, including English. The only slight problem is that you have to have a little bit of an understanding of Spanish in order to find it. The DGT provide a wealth of information about driving on their website, dgt.es. If you go to their front page, look down the page, under the scrolling banner, until you see the word, ‘Tramites.’ The website is constantly evolving, but currently, the second option in the list is named ‘Hojas informativas de Tramites.’ Click on that sentence. Once the page has loaded, you will see a list of languages, and at the bottom, the word ‘Ingles.’ Click on this word (or any of the other languages if
you prefer French or German for example). Having clicked on your choice of language, for which we are going to assume is English, you are now presented with another list, in Spanish, which is again, constantly growing. There are some key phrases to look out for, the most important forms you might need, but feel free to look around, click them and save them all if you wish; they are all free, and they all have guidance notes so you know what to fill in, and the process for each procedure. The most important forms you are likely to need, we think, are: Cambio titularidad vehiculo: Change of vehicle ownership. Baja temporal. Alta del vehiculo en baja temporal: Temporary deregistration of a vehicle. Baja definitiva por traslado de vehiculo a otro pais: Definitive deregistration of the vehicle due to transfer to another country. Informe del vehiculo: Vehicle re-
port (important for checking the history of a vehicle before buying it). Duplicados y renovaciones del permiso de circulacion: Duplicates or renewals. Baja definitiva: Definitive deregistration. There are other information sheets and as you look around the website you might find other information in English too, including a very informative section explaining how to oppose a traffic fine if you genuinely weren’t the driver at the time, but we can deal with that another time; for now get downloading and learning.

Looking for treasure! T
he Classic Car Club of Andalucia ran its first Treasure Hunt for some time last week, dovetailing the event into its regular classic car run and lunch. The idea for the Treasure Hunt was conceived by club member Richard Masters who cunningly dreamt up a list of 30 items that crews would have to find and produce at the end of the run. Some amusing items needed to be found and some of them needed a bit of head scratching to work out. For example, how many people know what a ‘Bract’ is? Some clever items such as an image of the Cathedral at Santiago de Compostela was required to get one point. Difficult, but not many people realised that this image is on many Spanish coins! Some 40 cars turned up for registration at Venta Los Morenos, between Alhaurin and Mijas, on a bright and sunny Saturday morning. The list of items that had to be produced was not released until just before the 11.00am start after most had enjoyed the traditional coffee and bacon sarnie. A superb group of classic and modern classics had assembled, all of them pristine and gleaming in the winter sunshine, waiting for the ‘Off.’ After briefings by Club President Ian Giles and Treasure Hunt organiser, Richard Masters, cars set off gently in the direction of Coin but bypassing the town and heading past Venta Platero before turning up the A357 to head towards Álora. Light traffic meant an easy run up past the town before crews headed off towards the Torcal and some stunning countryside and well surfaced roads, making driving such a pleasure. It’s what we’re all here for really! Passing through the town of Vale de Abdalajis, and a quick refuelling stop for those that needed it, and then in to Venta

Los Atanores for refuelling of the crews themselves with some much enjoyed coffee and tapas. It was also a good opportunity to see all the cars parked together there and for the CCCA members to enjoy the company, the chat and the coffee in the sunshine. It was amusing to see a couple of bemused motorcyclists at the coffee stop, wondering why all the ladies in the cars were getting them to have ‘selfie’ photos taken with them. One of the items to collect on the Treasure Hunt list was ‘A selfie taken with a motor-cyclist!’ One could see that many of these crews were now starting to get serious about the competition. It’s always the same, noone is that bothered about the winning until the competition starts - then, its ‘all hands to the pumps’ and victory is essential! After the coffee stop the
route became very special, approaching the lakes of El Chorro from the north-east, crossing the Sierras de Chimeneas, a road seldom used but most spectacular with the most amazing views of the lakes and the surrounding mountains. And hardly another vehicle in sight, although the occasional people that were encountered were so enthusiastic to see the CCCA cars on the move. A really beautiful sight when they were all close together with the lakes as a backdrop. A second, optional, coffee stop was organised in El Chorro itself, right by the lakes with such fabulous views and such clear blue skies, a real treat indeed! After the cars had skirted the lakes a fuel stop was taken on the outskirts of Ardales before joining the fast A-357 to head back towards Pizarra and
then take the newish A-355 back up towards Coin. A drinks stop was the next thing on the agenda, Richard Masters having arranged a stop on the edge of the woods at Barranco Blanco where he served Martini Rosso cocktails to everyone. A fine idea! From here the route headed towards Mijas, skirting Valtocado where the most spectacular views out over the straits were enjoyed by all. Next, a descent from Mijas Pueblo to the main A-7 coast road and in to the finish at the Safari Lounge of CLC World Resorts and Hotels. Live music had been arranged by CLC World as most diners enjoyed sitting out in the warm February sunshine. The lunch that was provided by the Safari Lounge there was absolutely first-class and thoroughly enjoyed by all.
ON SAFARI: Dinner was enjoyed at CLC World. Around 80 people sat down to enjoy the magical atmosphere created where not only were the food and surroundings superb, but so was the warm welcome and the excellent service. Definitely a venue to be used again in the future. The results of the Treasure Hunt were being calculated at this time and, amazingly, two crews managed to get 100 per cent of the 30 items asked for. A quick tie-deciding question settled a winner and very generous prizes of CCCA fleeces, Champagne and chocolates were presented to the winners. First prize went to Chris and Zena Ring in their gorgeous little green Morris Minor Convertible.
The next events on the calendar include a Jaguar run organised by Philip Wray of the JEC, which takes place this Saturday. The next CCCA classic car run will be on March 9 but the Club would also like to let people know that it's now famous annual Summer Ball takes place on June 22 at the Tamisa Golf Hotel. LA LIGA leaders moved seven points clear at the top after a narrow 1-0 win over Real Vallidad at the weekend, while Real Madrid lost 2-1 to Girona to fall to third behind Atletico Madrid. Just last week Lionel Messi was described as ‘not 100 per cent’ after a thigh problem, and though he looked in better shape on Saturday, he was certainly not back to his spectacular self. Several passes went astray and a few shots by the normally accurate forward were high or wide of goal. All the same, the Argentine scored Barcelona’s only goal, driving home a first-half penalty, before missing a second. Barca will be hoping Messi’s mojo returns before Champion League action on Tuesday against Olympique Lyonnais. Recent weeks of promise and a spectacular 3-1 win over Atletico Madrid two weeks ago were forgotten as Los Blancos suffered a disastrous defeat by Girona on Sunday, leaving them nine points from the top.

LA LIGA may scrap Friday and Monday night matches as part of negotiations with the Spanish FA, according to national paper, Diario Sport. The two organisations have long-standing disagreements over a number of administrational issues, with league chief Javier Tebas eager to spread matches out across the weekend for TV purposes. But in the past, these two time slots have proven hugely unpopular with Spanish football fans and supporters of Rayo Vallecano and Alaves are among those who have staged protests. The move would take effect from next season onwards.

If not, then Spanish radio Cope’s El Partidazo show has reported that the club will ask the board members for the possibility of leaving the division. In the press conference after the game, Madrid’s basketball section director, Juan Carlos Sanchez, said that ‘it is the second year that there is a misfortune in the arbitration against Real Madrid.’ He added that ‘if the three referees have not seen that it is a legal block, something has happened that is wrong.’

Montmelo is this year’s main circuit to host the pre-season tests which began this week and continue from Tuesday until March 1. October, one of two which make up the 2019 European Tour here in Spain. The fairly new Multisport World Championships Festival will be held in Pontevedra from April 27 to May 4 - the first of which was held in Canada in 2017. The aim is to gather as many professional athletes as well as
amateurs from different sports for a week of cycling, running, swimming and more. Meanwhile, in Madrid, the incredible Caja Magica sports stadium with its moving walls will host the Mutua Madrid Open Tennis Tournament from May 3 to 12. From August 24 to September 15, the La Vuelta Ciclista a España will take television viewers on tour through most parts of Spain. This year the contest will, for the first time, begin in Salinas de Torrevieja with three stages in total along the Costa Blanca. Taking place over three weeks and with 21 different stages, La Vuelta will cover much of Spain’s geography, especially the Mediterranean coast and a number of breathtaking mountain ranges.

SPANISH badminton champion Carolina Marin has returned to her training regime after injuring her knee in January. Marin shared videos and pictures on social media showing her practising shots while walking on crutches. It comes after she ruptured the cruciate ligament in her knee during the final of the Indonesian Masters Tournament on Sunday January 27 and underwent surgery on January 29. She was back training six days later. Marin, 25, from Huelva Province, said her goal to win the gold at the Tokyo Olympic Games in 2020 kept her motivated and keen to get back on the court. “What makes me train is the desire to do what I enjoy doing. Otherwise it would be impossible,” Marin said. “It’s a new challenge, we do different things and what motivates us is to travel on new paths

I am very competitive and being outside of things does not get you anywhere. “As soon as I left hospital I told myself that I had to be patient.
