Property scam arrests THE alleged mastermind behind a €5 million real estate scam in Mallorca has been arrested in Colombia followed by the round-up of 11 suspected accomplices. The Guardia Civil has confirmed it has frozen 98 bank accounts and taken control of 38 properties owned by the criminal organisation involved in the fraudulent sale of non-existent off-plan homes. Carlos Garcia Roldan and the other suspected members of the ‘firm’ are believed to have swindled more than 300 expatriates, offering 21 different large-scale promotions in Palma, Marratxi, Llucmajor and Santa Ponsa. The houses were offered at lower prices and buyers were asked to give at least 10 per cent in advance. Some victims paid as much as €200,000. A number of web pages and electronic mail domains are currently being investigated,
and a staggering 350,000 bank movements have been recorded. The detained are charged with the alleged crimes of fraud, money laundering, forgery of documents, appropriation of civil status and property. In a statement, the Guardia Civil, which is working in collaboration with the Colombian Police since last summer,
said: “Officers verified the existence of a ‘complex business network,’ which, taking advantage of misleading advertising and professional profiles to give an appearance of legality, was dedicated to gleaning deposits for the purchase of non-existent real estate.” As a result, the Guardia Civil arrested 10 people last August, including real estate
entrepreneur Michele Pilato who remains in custody. Overseas co-operation led investigators to Roldan, who had fled to Colombia where he was reportedly staying with his girlfriend and her mother’s partner. During a brief hearing at Bournemouth Town Hall, it was heard that the 28-yearold was formally identified by his fingerprints after a body was recovered from the seabed wreckage last Thursday. According to British press reports, senior acting coroner Brendan Allen said investigations were being carried out by the police, the Air Accidents Investigation Branch (AAIB) and the Civil Aviation Authority. This could take between six and 12 months, and the inquest has been adjourned until November 6. Pilot David Ibbotson is still missing and his family have set up a fundraiser, similar to the one which funded the search for Sala, to resume the search for the 59-year-old. More than €160,000 has already been raised.

UNVEILED: Memorial for prisoners of Francoism.
THE first memorial in Mallorca for more than 1,500 Republican prisoners held in concentration camps during the Civil War has been inaugurated. A small amphitheatre has been created by the Council of Mallorca at Banys de Sant Joan de la Font Santa in Campos, where the first camp was located. Information panels which explain what the Font Santa concentration camp signified, have been erected. During the unveiling on Friday, infrastructure councillor, Mercedes Garrido, explained that prisoners
worked on building 100km of road in Mallorca. They were transferred to the camp from Bellver Castle and other temporary prisons. Council leader Miquel Ensenyat, said the memorial should have been created much earlier, adding ‘we should not forget people who committed the crime of having dreamt of a fairer world, who fought for an education and for health.’ Government ministers Catalina Cladera and Fanny Tur attended along with PSOE councillor, Paco Blasco.

BY GORGE: Houses in Setenil are carved into a rock face.
Hewn into rock THIS village in Andalucia famous for buildings that are built into the side of a gorge has made it into a British newspaper ’s ranking of beautiful Spanish towns. Setenil de las Bodegas, in Cadiz Province, was chosen along with five others in The Times’ list of the most beautiful towns in Spain. The town sits at around 640 metres above sea level in the Sierra de Cadiz and is built around the Trejo River. Many buildings facing onto the
river have been carved out of a gorge side which now sticks out over the streets below. The Romans founded settlements in the area before the Moors later built up the town. Its natural defences were considered impregnable, but it attracted the attention of Castillan kings who saw it as a gateway to the territory of their Nasrid rivals. Attacks were mounted from 1407 until it was finally captured by the Juan II of Castilla in Sep-
tember 1484. The name Setenil is believed to come from the Latin Septem nihil, which alludes to seven attempts to conquer it that were unsuccessful. Others argue it comes from the Arabic Satt denil, which toughly translates as joyful riverbank. The Bodegas part of the name is believed to refer to the vineyards that were planted after the Castillan take over. The town currently is home to around 2,730 people.

Sex assault A TATTOOIST, 41, has been arrested for allegedly touching a female client ‘intimately’ at his shop in Palma. The woman claims he ‘touched intimate parts’ and tried to kiss her after finishing her tattoo, before she was able to get dressed and leave the shop.
Rent probe THE Balearic government is taking disciplinary action against 119 people for illegally renting properties to tourists in 2018. It is estimated that as much as €1.5 million could have been profited by those responsible for housing holidaymakers without the required paperwork and licences in the last 12 months.
Human remains THE skeletal remains of three bodies have been found during exhumation work at Pou de s’Aguila in Llucmajor. It is believed the corpses could belong to victims of the Franco regime, and families with missing relatives are invited to contact Mallorca Council to arrange DNA tests. Almudena García, director of the exhumation work carried out by the Aranzadi Institute, said that ‘after having lowered the initial level of the well by seven metres, the human re-
mains of three people appeared.’ He added ‘the skeletons have multiple fractures in their bones, probably due to blows suffered during the fall.’ Archaeologists are now working on recovering the remains, and have not ruled out the possibility of finding other ‘victims.’ Councillor for Culture, Fanny Tur, said the discovery of human remains inside the s’Àguila well confirms the repression experienced during the Civil War in Mallorca.

Crippling tourist tax HOTELS in Mallorca are calling on the government to scrap the controversial tourist tax claiming it poses a ‘serious threat’ to the future of the island. It comes in the wake of a sixweek delay in the start of the holiday season with Easter falling in late April, concerns over Brexit and the growing popularity of other destinations such as Turkey and Egypt. The tourist tax was reintroduced in 2016 and doubled last year, meaning holidaymakers are

paying between two and four euros extra each night to stay in Mallorca. A spokesman for the collective Hotel Business Federation of Mallorca (FEHM), the Hotel Business Federation of Ibiza and Formentera (FEHIF) and the Hotel Association of Menorca (ASHOME) said that ‘those decisions could not have been more inappropriate given the uncertainty looming over the sector.’ Reservations are reportedly already down by 20 per cent.

by Tara Rippin A RESCUE boat has been named after a three-year-old Syrian boy who drowned, along with his brother and mother, while attempting to cross the Aegean. The father and aunt of Alan Kurdi attended a special ceremony in Palma on Sunday, and played a major part in the christening of the German non-profit SeaEye ship. Alan drowned in September 2015 along with his brother Ghalib, mother Rehanna, and eight other people. A photograph of Alan’s lifeless body washed up on a Turkish beach brought the plight of Syrian refugees home to people across the world. Together with Alan’s aunt, the toddler’s father, Abdullah Kurdi, who now lives in Erbil, attended Sunday’s ceremony. The Spanish Embassy in Ankara gave him permission and a visa to enable him to be present. He said: “This day is very difficult for me as I have many memories again. But I want to support Sea-Eye. I am grateful they have chosen the name of my boy.

It analysed 6,221 Spanish Instagram accounts with a minimum of 10,000 followers during 2018. The capital had 4,247 mentions. The league is led by Madrid, with 65,345 mentions, followed by Barcelona at 36,800. Popular cities sitting between the leaders and Palma are; Valencia, Sevilla, Malaga, Ibiza, Zaragoza and Marbella. Rich in heritage slogan PALMA has a new promotional slogan aimed at revealing the ‘hidden side’ of the city. At a cost of €15,000, ‘This is Palma’ comes in the form of various images with the slogan, aimed at both
visitors and island residents. Tourism councillor Joana Adrover said the plan is to reveal an unexpected side to Palma, adding “it has always been there, but attention has not been given to the authentic city, which can be dis-
covered at any time of the year.” The campaign therefore covers history, theatre, business, Joan Miro, artisan craft, sport, health, architecture, gastronomy and more. According to Adrover,

THE Union of Technicians of Nursing (SAE) has condemned the assault of two ambulance technicians while they were giving medical assistance to two injured members of the public in Palma on Monday.

A SERIES of consultations are to be held in Mallorca in late March and April to gauge public opinion on whether people prefer the Monarchy or republic. The meetings are being organised by several political groups which claim they want to establish a ‘democratic model of state,’ and the only way to do so is to ask the public what it wants. The ‘collective parties’ are Alternativa per Arta, Assemblea Popular de Porreres, Ateneu Popular d’Esporles, L’Ateneu de Pollenca, La Valldemossa que Volem, S’Ateneu de Santa Margalida and Unio d’Independents d’Arta. A statement reads: ‘The signatory collectives believe the citizens of the Spanish State have the right to be consulted on what model of state we want.’ It adds that the consultations ‘seek to make visible and put on the table the question of the state model, an issue which for many years since the Spanish Constitution was voted in 1978, strives to keep out of the public debate.’ The sessions, open to those over 16, will be held on March 30 and 31 in Valldemossa and on April 6 and 7 in Ara, Esporles, Pollensa, Porreres and Santa Margalida. Further details will be released within the next week.

Motorway mayhem A THREE-CAR pile-up created highway hell on the Inca motorway on Monday morning as motorists found themselves in five-kilometre tailbacks. According to the transport department DGT, a car entered the opposite lane on the motorway and collided with two oncoming vehicles. The crash occurred between Consell and Santa Maria at around 9am. There were no serious injuries, but traffic heading towards Palma came to a standstill for a few hours. Many vehicles were diverted by the old road, inside Consell, which created further traffic jams on the secondary road.
LOCAL POLICE in Palma confiscated 130 rental electric scooters being used on public roads on Monday. They also imposed €75 fines on the owners following a council agreement, signed last week, which prohibits the hiring of the vehicles for use on pavements and public roads. The ban was introduced to ‘remove the nuisance and danger’ posed by electric scooters to pedestrians and motorists.

AROUND 690,300 people were employed in the Spanish culture industry at the end of 2018, up from about 687,200 the previous year according to figures from the Labour Force Survey.
R and D fall SPENDING on research and development has fallen in Spain as a share of its economic output (GDP) from 1.23 per cent in 2007 to 1.2 per cent in 2017, according to the data from the EU’s Eurostat agency.
New cars THE number of petrol cars registered in Spain rose by 29.7 per cent in 2018 while the amount of diesel cars fell by 20.7 per cent in the same period, according to European Association of Automobile Manufacturers (ACEA).

THE mummified body of a British woman, 71, has been found at a property where the daughter and granddaughter reportedly lived alongside the corpse for up to a year. Guardia Civil discovered the ‘skeletal and mummified’ remains under a mattress, still wearing clothes and surrounded by air fresheners at a house in Istan, close to Marbella. The macabre finding, investigated by the Benemerita
Judicial Police Unit, was made in the early hours of Saturday after a call from the daughter of the deceased. According to reports, she contacted the police after the dead woman’s husband found out and told her and her teenage daughter to go to the police. Officers visited the property and reportedly found the mother’s body hidden under a mattress and cardboard. Initial inspections and a
forensic examination carried out at the Institute of Legal Medicine (IML) in Malaga, found no sign of violence. Investigators believe she may have died of natural causes, although this is still to be confirmed by a postmortem. As well as the cause of death, examiners want to find out exactly when, though it is believed it could have been last March, based on statements by family members.
Animal abuse arrests up THE number of people arrested or charged for animal abuse in Spain in 2018 rose by more than 20 per cent. Seprona, the Guardia C i v i l ’s n a t u r e p r o t e c t i o n
service investigated or detained 590 people for animal abuse against both wild and domestic animals. The agency investigated 10,920 offences related to
injuries against domestic animals in 2018, and a further 3,974 involving dangerous animals and 1,731 in connection with dangerous dog breeds. The agency also addressed 3,974 complaints regarding owners keeping wild animals as pets, and investigated more than 200 reports of animal exploitation at dog kennels, farms and zoos. T h e p r e v i o u s y e a r, S e prona dealt with 11,277 reports of animal abuse, and 488 people were arrested or c h a rg e d . B u t w h i l e t h e number of people investig a t e d r o s e s l i g h t l y, l a s t year compared to 2017, there was a 20 per cent rise in those arrested or charged. In Galicia, the agency is currently investigating the brutal killing of four wild horses, which were led into a deworming corridor and beaten to death.

Get organised for Brexit Euro Weekly News Media Group publishers, Michel and Steven Euesden, share their personal experiences in the run up to March 29. FROM our postbag - as our editor Dilip Kuner told The Observer - the British expat population in Spain is pretty evenly split over Brexit. We strive to reflect this in our coverage, but one thing we feel is hugely important is to give advice that will be useful to all expats whatever their views. Having listened to the British Ambassador to Spain, Simon Manley, we decided to be pro-active in making sure our house is in order pre-Brexit. It was all too clear that there were a number of crucial things that we needed to do to make sure we are legal UK citizens living in Spain. In these uncertain times it is easy to become overwhelmed by the legalities and sometimes conflicting information. But it isn’t as difficult as it initially seems. We hope that by sharing our experiences readers too can follow some relatively simple steps to ensure life runs smoothly after Brexit - deal or no deal. To explain, we have renewed our
passports, even though there were months left on them, to eliminate potential problems when travelling overseas post-Brexit (many airlines for example won’t permit you on board if your passport has fewer than six months to run). This can be done easily online at www.gov.uk/renew-adult-passport, simply fill in your details and upload a photograph via your phone or computer. It really is that easy, with the system taking you every step of the way. At each stage of the process text messages keep you informed - even to when the DHL delivery of the passport to your home is due to arrive In addition, our padrons - which are vital for all sorts of paperwork as well as benefiting the local council when it comes to calculating government grants (see next week’s EWN for a fuller explanation) - have been updated at our town hall, where the staff were only too happy to help. Not only that, but we have renewed our Spanish residencias to ensure we
are in possession of the official NIE card. These are issued at the Foreigner Office or National Police station, depending on where you live, and are now a handy credit card size. They are also essential for renewing your Spanish driving licence or swapping your UK one - as we have done well ahead of Brexit. So no matter what the outcome, we know we can continue to drive here and in Europe. You can do this at your nearest Trafico (DGT) office, or if you don’t speak Spanish, a gestor (Spanish administrator) will deal with all of the paperwork for you. We are in the process of updating our

The key is to break the issues down methodically, and tackle them one at a time. NEWS EXTRA Female officers SPAIN’S National Police is celebrating 40 years of women in the uniform. Four decades ago there were just 42 female police officers, today there are 9,068, a figure which represents 14.8 per cent of the entire force.

Judge denies landowner claim By Sally Underwood THE judge presiding over a negligent manslaughter investigation into two-year-old Julen’s death on a plot in Totalan has rejected the landowner’s claim to be given inside access to the trial. David Serrano’s lawyers had asked the judge to name him a ‘personada,’ a legal title naming someone as an interested party in a trial and allowing them access to the details of the proceedings. School bus drugs bust POLICE in Spain took a school bus off the road after the driver tested positive for cannabis at a roadside check. The Local Police in Elda (Alicante) had stopped the vehicle as part of a national drive to ensure the safety of school transport. Officials said the bus had travelled from Villena and had also picked up students from the nearby town of Sax. They said the test was indicative only and to confirm the result a saliva sample
must be analysed in an approved laboratory. The result will not be known for two weeks. The bus was allowed to continue on its way once another driver, who was subjected to the same tests, was found. The week-long Directorate General of Traffic (DGT) safety campaign checked that vehicles and drivers meet the administrative requirements, safety measures, driving times, rest periods and other obligations.

Dia investors’ share offer THREE investors in the Spanish supermarket chain Dia have pooled their shares together as the basis for a syndication deal as a Russian tycoon plots a takeover bid. Pedro and Pablo Gomez-Pablos and Gregoire Bontoux Halley said they were aiming to boost Dia’s capital by 3.25 per cent. They also plan to admit other stockholders to their syndication agreement, according to information submitted to Spain’s CNMV market regulator. It comes as Russian billionaire Mikhail Fridman launched a takeover bid last week.

Renfe plans to compete
Minister budget hopes SPAIN’S Economy Minister has said she hopes lawmakers will back the government’s budget for this year as talks continue to secure parliamentary support. Nadia Calviño said government budget plans were designed to put the Spanish economy on a ‘sustainable’ path of growth. It comes as opposition politicians and companies have cast doubt on plans which include raising the minimum wage to €900. Calviño said concerns over the effects of measures in the budget were ‘exaggerated.’ “We hope that in the end our plans

The bank has still forecast unemployment will fall to 13.8 per cent in 2019. Calviño said the hike was designed to ensure workers enjoyed decent wages and dignified, quality jobs.
STATE-OWNED rail company Renfe has said a new app and website improvements are part of its plans to improve services as it prepares for competition from next year. Manel Villalante, the firm’s Strategy and Development Director, said the planned app for passengers was designed to stave off rivals. The company wanted to avoid the fate of traditional taxis after the arrival of Uber, Villalante added. Renfe has also tendered a deal worth €750,000 to redesign its website under its 2019 to 2023 Strategic Plan.

SHOCKS: The ECB will test banks this month. THE European Central Bank (ECB) has said it will test around 100 eurozone banks this month to see if they can handle mass withdrawals. The liquidity stress tests are set to see the banks subjected to various shocks to see how long they can cope with money being withdrawn from deposits. They come after Spanish bank Popular was brought down by mass withdrawals in 2017,
leading to Santander buying it out. The ECB tests are made up of three different scenarios. There is the baseline scenario of stable output flows, the adverse shock scenario where liquidity is limited and the extreme shock scenario where wholesale activity is frozen. The tests will not assess systemic economic shocks, but ones which affect banks individually.

Industrial output grows THE amount of goods produced in Spanish factories grew by 0.8 per cent in 2018, the lowest increase in five years. Computers and electronic goods rose by 8 per cent while 6.3 per cent more transport materials
were produced. Extractive industry goods fell by 5.3 per cent and clothing output decreased by 4.3 per cent. The regions with the highest output increases were Cantabria with 6.6 per cent, Galicia with 4.9 and Asturias, 2.2. The largest declines took place in La Rioja with 5.6 per cent, the Balearic Islands with 3.9 and Andalucia, 2.9.

The changing face of London
LEAPY LEE SAYS IT OTHERS THINK IT MANY moons ago, when I began writing for this wholly unique, free thinking publication, I often wrote of the impending national disaster should the UK continue to allow immigration, particularly from countries outside of Europe, to continue unabated and virtually unchecked. This resulted in the emergence of the phrase ‘Another Leapy Rant,’ which became one of the most oft uttered observations in a whole multitude of derisory mail that subsequently found its way into the EWN postbag. Although many agreed with my sentiments, laughter and derision was, at that time, very much the order of the day. Well, in the words of Farage’s post referendum address to the EU parliament. They’re not laughing now are they? I’ve just returned from a month in the UK and I can quite categorically state that the face of Great Britain as we knew it has changed - forever. Sure, the country areas are, for the time being, reminiscent of our great culture and heritage, but in the cities, particularly parts of London, British values are virtually non-existent. Don’t take my word for it.These are a few observations from an article recently published in one of the nationals. They came from a lady journalist (Source: Jane Kelly, The Daily Telegraph) who has, for 17 years lived in Acton Vale, London, one of the areas virtually taken over by the

She writes: ‘So many Muslims in the area insist on their separateness - there are not even any attempts to integrate into British society.’ She goes on to say that her neighbours ‘flap by’ in full niqab, so heavily veiled she can’t see their eyes. When she smiles and tries to communicate, they won’t even look her in the eye. Apparently, most of the shops have been taken over by Muslims and even her fish and chip shop has become Halal. A nearby shop, which advertis-
es ‘no alcohol,’ added that alcohol is also banned in streets near the shop! In the past ‘normally clad’ Western girls, were reportedly admonished for ‘exposing themselves’ near a mosque. The members of these ‘patrols’ have also been heard shouting ‘this is a Muslim area’ at other white Britons. Openly gay men have been attacked on the streets. The list simply goes on and on. (Editor’s note: In 2013 ‘Muslim Patrol’ mem-

The East London Mosque denounced the group’s actions as completely unacceptable following reports that they were attacking gay men.) So, despite wishful thinking from multi culturists, wilful segregation by immigrants has resulted in, among other unacceptable practices, the chilling term ‘White Flight.’ Between 2001 and 2011, 640,000 white Britons left London, according to the census. So, most of the old Leapers ‘rantings’ have been realised. So, all you snowflakes out there, despite your well-intentioned, but unbelievably naïve aspirations for us all to all live side by side as one big happy family, it is well time you realised that it is not the poor beleaguered, well-meaning locals at fault. The fault is mass uncontrolled, alien immigration. An unforgivable error of judgement that unfortunately has merely resulted in making reluctant racists of just about everyone Keep the faith. TECH FOR THE TIMID I WENT to the newsagents the other day to see if they still stocked Newsweek. The shop’s there, but the magazine isn’t. And never will be, despite still selling thousands; it’s digital-only these days. In the beginning were e-books, and behold, Amazon founder Jeff Bezos saw they were good and began the Kindle and it was downhill from there for books on dead trees. And yet... Who would have thought it, but after peaking four years ago, e-books have steadily been giving back ground to their traditional counterparts. Their share drops slightly each year, from making up 20 per cent of all book sales at their peak in 2015. Let’s look at the technology of The Book as it fights its way back. The Book is innovative to an extreme in this chips-with-everything era. No wires, no electric circuits, no batteries, nothing to be connected or switched on. It’s so easy to use, even a child can operate it. Compact and portable, it can be used anywhere. The Book is constructed of se-

TRADITIONAL BOOKS: A demise greatly exaggerated. quentially numbered sheets of paper (recyclable), each capable of holding hundreds of bits of information. The pages are locked together with a custom-fit device called a binder which keeps the sheets in their correct sequence. The Book may be taken up at any time and used merely by opening it. The Book never crashes or requires
rebooting, though like other display devices it can become unusable if dropped in the bath. The browse feature lets you move instantly to any sheet, and forward or backwards as you wish. Many come with an index feature, which pinpoints the exact location of any selected information for instant retrieval.
You can also make personal notes next to Book text entries with an optional programming tool, the Portable Erasable Nib Cryptic Intercommunication Language Stylus (PENCILS). So far, so attractive. But like LPs versus MP3s, at least for now, the traditional and the electronic book both seem here to stay. I love fondling a musty book and even getting my nose right into it, but even US Customs might have trouble separating me from my cherished Kindle. A couple of clicks on any of its hundreds, nay thousands, of titles, and the world’s great literature is mine. So from magazines to music, like so many of today’s ‘media consumers,’ my compromise is to stay traditional for the tactile look and feel, but go digital for convenience. One thing’s for certain; never again will I set out on holiday lugging that ridiculous rucksack, groaning under the latest bonkbusters.
Paper vs pixels AS a child I remember dear old grandpops berating my parents when they bought me a book for Christmas: ‘The lad’s already got a book!’ Now I’ve got thousands of the things. E-readers were invented two decades ago, but it took 2007’s first Kindle to revolutionise the market. E-books are read on an ubiquity of devices, but dedicated e-readers continue their steady sales, with one estimate saying that Amazon alone has now sold around 100 million Kindles (other brands are available), while flogging half a billion e-books a year. E-readers weigh less than a paperback, start at less than €100, hold several thousand books, run for a month on charge, and some are even waterproof. Pity they don’t look great in a bookcase.

The Balearic tourist tax makes people angry LAURA PENN ‘PENN TO PAPER’ SHOULD people be taxed to come on holiday to Mallorca? Oh look at those worms slithering out of that opened can! This is one of those subjects where you light the touch paper and retire as the conversation goes off! Just in case you have been living under an olive tree for the past two years and don’t know, the so-called ‘tourist tax’ was introduced at the start of July 2016, and since then it has raised a total of 234.48 million euros for the Balearic government. This year there are new rates of €4 per night for staying in luxury hotels, €3 for mid-range accommodation, €2 for cruise passengers and cheaper hotels and apartments, and €1 per person per day for campers and

Last summer there were tales of angry tourists refusing to pay the tax at hotel receptions and the Majorca Hotel Group pointed a finger at the Balearic government for providing a ‘lack of sufficient information’ surrounding the tax. BIT of a whinge this week. First off, as if on cue, the same old headlines in the UK press recently: ‘Big freeze brings travel chaos!’ Yes, people are delayed, some airports and schools closed, but hey, it’s winter! Shock horror! As I watched TV, with news reports of trapped motorists, I wondered why they didn’t seem to pay attention to the many warnings. Is it a lack of trust in the Met Office? An ‘It won’t happen to me’ fantasy, or just plain stupidity? Why can’t the UK have an emergency stash of snow ploughs and gritters which can be mobilised when winter hits, instead of this annual pathetic chaos? Stick the vehicles in the areas where snow’s expected, and set them to work. Don’t wait until the roads are blocked. Other countries manage perfectly well in bad winter weather without this incompetent, inexplicable lack of action by government and local authorities. Speaking of which, my next whinge concerns some local authorities using taxpayer cash to pay consultants to ‘analyse a clown festival,’ ‘devise a pantomime strategy,’ and ‘decide how many golf courses a town needs.’ Council spending on consultants increased to nearly £400 million last year, despite a gov-
funds into ‘conserving the environment’ and to make tourism more sustainable for the islands ever-increasing population in the high season. So how has the money been spent so far? Again, according to the government, revenue raised in 2016 and 2017 has gone towards 108 projects which are underway. Anyone know one of these 108 projects? Revenue from the tax last year increased partly because it now applies to all 400 visiting cruise ships regardless of how
long or short their stopovers are. It could be argued that a €2 charge for an overnight cruise stop in Palma is easily soaked up in the price of the cruise, but is a €28 increase going to stop others booking a fortnight in Magaluf? Well considering that would get you 14 glasses of very nice Croatian wine, yes, it may well affect numbers. There is already concern it is doing just that. For the past 15 years I have been told the tourist season has been getting shorter each year, and one person you will never meet on Mallorca is a hotelier who tells you things are going great and they are raking it in! However, with Brexit looming and with so many viable and cheaper alternatives for price-sensitive holidaymakers,
adding a tourist tax is like taking a good aim and shooting yourself accurately in the foot. A-Z of Mallorca this week reaches the letter ‘F’ for Flabiol. A Flabiol is a woodwind musical instrument, a bit like a piccolo or a recorder. It is approximately 25cm in length and has five or six holes on its front and three underneath. It is made of a hard wood such as bubinga and is usually played by the left hand while the player uses the right hand to beat a small drum called tambori, attached to the left elbow. Flabiols are played from the south of Cataluña to France, but it is only in the Balearic Islands that it is used as a solo instrument. LEGALLY SPEAKING Can he still exchange licences? I hold a residence certificate as an EU citizen in Spain and I have a UK driver’s licence, valid until my 70th birthday. Because of Brexit, I have to exchange my UK licence for a Spanish licence. After the exchange, do the Spanish authorities return the UK licence? Obtaining the appointment to exchange it may take five to six months. Will this delay complicate matters due to being after the Brexit date, or because I started the procedure before the Brexit date, will that make the exchange simpler, meaning I will not need to take a Spanish driver’s test? vvSURPRISE, surprise! The Public Prosecution Department smells a rat in the Ministry of the Interior’s plot to rob notes - ie evidence - accumulated by Luis Barcenas, former Partido Popular treasurer. For those recently arrived from Outer Space, this occurred because Luis Barcenas was dishing the dirt on the PP’s dodgy funding and other fiscal sins. Judges handed out verdicts and sentences at the end of the Gurtel confidence at the end of last May, which put Pedro Sanchez in the Moncloa and the PSOE in government. In 2013 this likelihood prompted the Ministry of the Interior to launch Operation Kitchen, protecting the party’s interests, not the state’s. The Ministry spent €600,000 of public money, some of which was used to bribe Barcenas’ chauffeur to spy on him. Inevitably, the now-retired police chief Jose Manuel Villarejo also played a starring role in the conspiracy, as his presence appears to be a given in these cases. As it’s also a given that the Public Prosecution department took years to come up with a conclusion which occurred to the rest of us long before.

Delayed reaction Back to the jackboot THE Supreme Court, which is prosecuting members of the regional government who declared Cataluña an independent republic on October 27, 2017, has preferred not to accept international observers. Not the best of moves. No-one questions Spain’s democratic credentials, at least no-one living here, but this decision makes it less easy to erase the international image of poor downtrodden Cataluña crushed under Fran-
co’s cast-off jackboots. Allowing, as their lordships have, live coverage of the sessions is less convincing than they imagine. For a world fed a diet of reality television it will be so mind-numbingly boring that commentators will revert to the jackboot theory anyway.
Neutral tones A LEADING seaman in the Spanish Navy received 30 days in the glasshouse for signing an
anti-Franco manifesto. This responded to an earlier manifesto by 144 high-ranking officers, many of them retired, defending Francisco Franco and justifying the military uprising against the Republican government in July 1936. Another group made a public declaration the one which landed the seaman in hot water which supported the sovereignty of the Spanish people. The disciplinary proceedings against him claimed criticising the dead dictator ‘undermined the Armed Forces’ neutrality.’
British colony status GIBRALTAR voted almost unanimously to remain inside the European Union, so is not particularly happy with the prospect of a hard Brexit. Spain has been breathing down their necks for centuries, and now, adding insult to injury, Brussels has announced that if Britain says adieu, farewell and goodbye without a deal, Gibraltar will have the status of a British colony. Spain has succeeded in manoeuvring Brussels into using this term in a document prepared for the increasingly likely eventuality of a no-deal Brexit. Nothing is guaranteed to make Brexiteers froth at the mouth like accusing them of having little idea of what they were really voting for, but how many were prepared for this one?

ITV reveals Victoria series three premiere Richard Shanley UK viewers won’t have to wait too much longer to see Victoria’s third series, thankfully. F o r t h e f i r s t t i m e e v e r, t h e r e g a l d r a m a i s c u r r e n t l y a i ring in the US as part of P B S ’s M a s t e r p i e c e p r o g r a m ming block before it even has a UK premiere date, which has ticked off fans here at home.
ITV was at first hesitant to update viewers on when it would be bringing them the new episodes, but does now have a firm timeline of when Her Royal Highness Jenna Coleman will be back on screens. T h e c h a n n e l ’s b o s s K e v i n Ly g o , h a s c o n f i r m e d t o t h e R a d i o T i m e s , t h a t Vi c t o r i a will definitely return ‘in the spring or summer.’ Asked why there was such a long delay in transmission, L y g o w o u l d o n l y s a y : “ We have to get it right and put it up against the right things on
the BBC and elsewhere.” We ’ r e s u r e f a n s w i l l b e thrilled with that reasoning! The third series picks up in ‘turbulent times’ for the Queen and her royal court in 1848, as her advisors warn her to leave London to avoid the possibility of an uprising. You can greet someone, kiss them on each cheek, and if it’s a female, say ‘hola guapa’ and they say thank you. Of course, the climate is glorious. I mean, this winter has been amazing. You can call the wife ‘heifer’ (cow) without getting a slap because jefa means ‘the boss’ here. There are not lots of words the same; I mean the spelling police are on my case permanently because is it two, to or too? Would or wood, through or threw, bear or bare, ate or eight. Your or you’re; that’s the worst one, or is it won? But of course there are some things here which are really infuriating. Top of that list is the ‘shrug.’ You know the one, when you complain about something and you are 100 per cent in order, and the person you are talking to just looks at you and does that weird facial expression and gives the shrug. There is absolutely nothing you can say
or do to get any further reaction. Red tape, forms, the different hurdles you have to jump over and hoops you have to go through to get the simplest things done. Motor scooters and their selfish, dangerous idiotic drivers are the bane of every car driver on the road, and of course the zebra crossings which are so ‘conveniently’ placed on the exits to roundabouts. Cyclists are up there with their annoying abuse of the roads and their total belief that no part of any highway code in any country applies to them, therefore allowing them to ignore every traffic light, every crossing and every one-way system, and to ride two or three abreast, whilst having a chat. Plus of course, not having any insurance or making any contribution to the highways they abuse. The legal system is a nightmare; again, everything takes forever. I have a friend who is owed a considerable amount of money for work done, and this geezer won’t pay; trying to collect it is a nightmare even though there is supposed to be a type of small-claims court procedure, it still takes forever and by the time it’s all put into place most of them have disappeared without trace. THERE are some tree-mendous trunks and terrific tree roots, found all over Spain. I recently found some really scary trees in Palma City centre, Mallorca. Can you spot the ghoulish face? Look at its eyes and mouth. Who yer gonna trunk call - ghost busters! Branching out to the Costa del Sol, I found another monster tree root in Paloma Park, Benalmadena. There’s creatures great and small in the park, but look closely and you will see there’s a crocodile under that tree. The ‘creature’ is massive - look at the size of its head, legs and tail. With Spain coming second only to Sweden for the largest amount of forests in Europe, there must be dozens of weird and wonderful trees in your neck of the woods. Rapid turnover I HAVE been enjoying the new series of Bargain Loving Brits. However, after doing a bit of Googling and Facebooking following the first episode, it appears that one couple who took on a bar have already called it a day. The bar has been redecorated in red - they painted it blue - and from Facebook threads, appears to have changed hands around October. Assuming the episode was filmed in early summer 2018 (it appears so) then they lasted all of three or four months. Ouch! Alan Hayes Leapy Lee has been getting a reaction from readers…
BBC take note I ENJOYED reading (Leapy Lee 1753) your article on Brexit (promise I won’t mention it again!) Perhaps if the BBC broadcast your article rather than the BBC’s invented doom and gloom, it would lift the whole nation and disclose our true opinions and stance on Europe. NEWS that Spain intends to work more closely with France and Germany on EU issues following Brexit is welcome if the country does not forgo its ties with Britain. Discussions between officials from Spain, France and Germany have so far focused on bringing Spain into the fold of leading EU member states. It comes as Irene Lozano, Secretary of State for Global Spain, said the country should strive to occupy the void left by Britain in the EU following Brexit. The official added that Spain and Britain must continue to work hand in hand over Europe and internationally. If Lozano’s comments are indicative of Spain’s policy towards Britain going forward then it is encouraging. Spain and Britain share many reasons for co-operation, including large communities of expatriates living in each other’s countries. Recent bilateral agreements on voting rights and other issues post-Brexit have shown officials in London and Madrid are keen to continue working closely together. Even the longrunning dispute over Gibraltar has so far failed to derail their efforts. If Britain and Spain continue to develop such ties then Madrid’s desire to make its presence felt in the EU should also be welcome. Spain, which would be the fourth-largest economy in the bloc following Britain’s departure, would be ideally placed to act as its third power alongside France and Germany. It could also prove a valuable ally for Britain in the EU after Brexit.

PORTION CONTROL: Experts say our hands may hold the answer. IF you have ever worried you are eating all the right things and exercising regularly, but still seem to gain weight, experts say the answer may be in growing portion sizes. While a diet of salad, protein, and whole grains is generally considered very healthy, scientists warn it is still possible to gain weight by eating these foods, if we have too much . In fact, the British Nutrition
Foundation has said portion sizes in restaurants and shops are become increasingly bigger, changing our view of what a ‘normal’ amount of food looks like, and in turn encouraging us to eat more. This tends to lead to bad choices, guilt, and eating and drinking to excess. It doesn’t have to be that way. If you are prepared, you can make better choices and still have a great time, whether you are eating out, or hitting the town. If eating out, it helps if you know where you are going. If possible, glance at a menu online to get ideas, rather than panicking on the night and ordering something at random. Steakhouse? Easy. Steak, vegetables, low-carb sauces, flavoured butters. Indian? A creamy curry or tandoori chicken and dips. No rice, no naan. If the menu is carb-heavy, opt for complex carbs such as lentils, chickpeas, whole grains and vegetables. You’ll notice a difference, as you’ll be the one not nodding off later that night and leading the way on the dance floor! If you are embarking on a night out of the drinking variety, this can also be less damaging than you think. Opt for wine (white is the lowest in carbs, the dryer the better) vodka or gin with slimline tonic

measuring, equalling one portion of potato, while two thumbs equate to one serving of cheese. Finally, cooked meat and fish should measure around half the size of our hands. This system is said to work well, because the portion sizes, which will change depending on how big your hand is, will also be proportional to how short or tall a person is, and how many calories they need.

EATING OUT: Making the right choices is easier than you think. (standard tonic has 28g of carbs per can and 110 calories would you believe) Avoid sugar-loaded drinks such as lager, beer and ciders. The only danger is those munchies which follow, cravings for pizza and kebabs after a heavy night are obviously not a good idea, but if you really must, opt

Big screen favourites together again TWO of Spain’s hottest movie stars, Antonio Banderas and Penelope Cruz, are reuniting to take lead roles in Sony Pictures’ upcoming film, Dolor y Gloria (Pain and Glory). The movie is directed by Pedro Almodovar, who took the reins of the last film the pair starred in together, I’m so Excited, in 2013. A trailer - more a collection of unconnected scenes - kicks off with a shot of 58-year-old Banderas’ character, film director ‘in decline’ Salvador Mallo, sitting at the bottom of a pool.

NOW that the property market has entered a positive trend, with it comes the fear another crash is looming on the horizon. We are in a period of rising house prices, double-digit spikes in the number of mortgages being granted, and growing interest from international investors in domestic assets. However, experts in the property field are insisting the situation which we are experiencing now is nothing like that which we went through before the crisis in 2008. According to Joaquin Maudos, Professor of Economic Analysis at the University of Valencia, one of the most telling statistics to prove we are not about to enter a

Despite the fact more and more loans are being granted by the banks, and the number is at its highest since 2011, in the last 12 months 72 per cent fewer mortgages have been awarded than in 2006. Maudos’s study also looks at other data including the type of interest applied and how much an average family must spend from its wages to cover its monthly mortgage payments, and compares it with other countries in the eurozone.
The eurozone share In 2006, the number of mortgages coming from Spain was 20 per cent of the EU total, but now this figure is only 5.2 per cent. This figure becomes even more revealing when we note that we are the third eurozone market in terms of volume of loans (the outstanding balance is around €519,000 million), second only to Germany and France. Nor can we forget we are the fifth country where mortgages weigh more than the total assets of the bank, tied with the Netherlands. The real estate sector accounts
for 19.7 per cent of total assets within the financial sector, compared to the 13.8 per cent represented on average in the eurozone, according to data from the European Central Bank (ECB). Spanish mortgages amongst the cheapest The number of mortgages being taken out in Spain are attributed, according to Spain’s moneylenders, to a greater consumer confidence, cheaper mortgage rates and economic house prices. One figure which backs this up is that current loans are subject to

SWEDISH furniture giant, IKEA, is always at the forefront of new ideas when it comes to furnishing your home or business. Taking a completely new direction, the Nordic powerhouse of flat-pack furniture is making a move into the realm of rentals. And that’s renting out furniture, not property. The group has decided to start renting out furniture to businesses and will begin with its office furniture. If it goes well, the scheme may well be extended to kitchens as well.
The idea would be to rent out office furniture such as desks and chairs for a determined period of time, after which the businesses would then return the furniture which would then be used for recycling or even for resale if the company wanted to upgrade their furniture and rent out something more updated and modern. This scheme will be piloted in Sweden first before moving into other countries. “The idea behind this,” said Torbjorn Loof, Managing Director of Inter Ikea, “is to prolong the shelf-life of the furniture and our products because after the
furniture has been returned, instead of throwing it away, we will restore it and resell it.” IKEA is also considering launching its own spare parts business, so customers can purchase accessories such as screws and door hinges which are no longer available in any stores. The process is part of the transformation of the group’s business model, which moves away from selling products purely in stores outside the city and lets customers collect and assemble their own items.

mortgage debt in September 2008, which was the maximum value reached at the height of the crisis, during a time when families were heavily indebted. Since then, debt service has been falling gradually until reaching a minimum of 6.6 per cent in March last year (latest available data), thus returning to figures of 2003. This figure is similar to that of Germany (6.1 per cent) and France (6.2 per cent) and less than the UK (9.4 per cent) or the USA (8.2 per cent). Spain is also the second country where the debt service of families has fallen the most since the beginning of the financial crisis, only behind Denmark.

Barry Duke HARD to believe, I know, but recently I got involved in a lively conversation in my favourite whisky den in which the dreaded word Brexit wasn’t mentioned at all. It was all about names. When I introduced myself to a couple of Brits enjoying a winter’s break in Benidorm, they insisted that ‘noone these days calls their son Barry, so I’m guessing you were born somewhere around the mid 1 9 6 0 ’s . ’ I t o o k t h i s a s c o m p l i ment, because I’d just hit the 72 mark. Our chat got me wondering whether any research had been done relating birth dates to names. Sure enough, there has. An online report, based on findings from America’s Social Security administration makes for fascinating reading. Published five years ago, it revealed for example, anyone in the US named Mildred would, in 2014, have been 78 years old, while Gertrudes, were on average, aged 80.

in the 1940’s. In 1967, musician Frank Zappa named his daughter Moon Unit, and she in turn gave her daughter the name Mathilda Plum Doucette. I n t h e 1 9 7 0 ’s , o n e c h i l d w a s named Marijuana Pepsi, and in 1983 singer Bob Geldof and TV star Paula Yates named their first child Fifi Trixibelle, a name more suited to a miniature French poodle. For some strange reason - lack of inspiration perhaps - 300 American children in the 1990’s were named ABCDE. In a 2015 poll of strange celebrity names, Pilot Inspektor, son of American actor Jason Lee, topped the list. He was born in 2003, and his dad said the name was inspired by a song by the band Grandaddy called ‘He’s Simple, He’s Dumb, He’s the Pilot,’ which pretty well describes the Great Trumpkin. There’s a very useful resource on the Internet which relates people’s names to their birth dates. When I entered Barry it showed it reached the height of popularity in1960. SPAIN led the way amongst European countries as Mazda showed strong sales growth in the first nine months of the 2018-2019 fiscal year. Sales in Europe were 196,000 units, up 2 per cent year-on-year, with strong growth continuing in Spain with 16,000 vehicles sold (+10 per cent) and the UK with 25,000 units (+6 per cent). Sales in Europe were driven by the Mazda2 and Mazda CX-5, up 8 per cent and
15 per cent year-on-year respectively. Globally, the corporation sold a total of 1,170,000 units during this period. Demand for the company’s crossover models remained strong and the introduction of several updated models - Mazda 6, CX-3 and MX-5 - drove sales momentum towards the end of the first nine months.
As in the first half of the fiscal year, the ASEAN region saw the highest year-on-year increase in vehicle sales in the nine months from April 1 to December 31, with
unit sales up 26 per cent to 104,000, and Japan contributed to the growth with a 7 per cent lift in sales to 150,000 units. North America sold 320,000 units. Mazda’s sales performance during the first nine months brought in revenue of ¥2,622.6 billion (€20.3 billion), resulting i n
an operating profit of ¥59.6 billion (€462 million) and net income of ¥37.0 billion (€286.8 million). Mazda’s full-year forecast has been revised to reflect the current status of sales volume and exchange rate assumptions. The full-year forecast of global sales volume is now 1,569,000 (previously 1,617,000) and operating profit of ¥80 billion (€625 million; previously ¥70 billion) and net income of ¥55 billion (€429.7 million; previously ¥50 billion).

I DON’T usually pay much attention to the weather, but during my test drive of the Skoda Karoq, I cannot help but notice it. I decide to take it on a trek to Hertfordshire and before long, spitting rain turns into a torrential and persistent downpour which sees many motorists stranded. But not us, and I am grateful because the Karoq, being an SUV, stands taller than those smaller run-of-the-mill cars, like the usual Fiesta I drive. I thank my lucky stars that I’m in the Karoq as I have to make my way through what seems to be a lake covering a country lane as we head towards Shaw’s Corner, playwright George Bernard Shaw’s retreat. Although the water level is high, it doesn’t pose a problem for the Skoda. Thank goodness. As this downpour continues for a good hour, my new friend has

many similar challenges thrown at him. My only criticism during this time is that I could do with a faster speed for the windscreen wipers. This is an excellent first impression which this competent vehicle keeps up for the duration of the test. It puts up with my three children and their heavy feet in the rear and there is a very positive contrast to the Hyundai i30 Fastback which I have just returned, in that I can
fit my children’s three car seats quickly and easily in the Skoda. The seatbelt points are placed in sensible positions unlike in the Hyundai. The seats are comfortable, there’s a good amount of space and the boot is large enough to allow us to travel with our luggage as well as Henry’s pushchair. Not many cars are so
accommodating. Another pleasant surprise is the full-size spare tyre, stored underneath the boot compartment. This is a real luxury these days, as some manufacturers have done away entirely with providing a spare, opting instead for a little repair pack. My steed is a fast and reliable vehicle and the cruise control on the left of the steering wheel, is easy to use. However, if you are too eager it can result in the indicator being operated instead. The six-speed manual gear-
box is decisive, and there’s an electrically-operated handbrake, which always unsettles me, but it seems reliable and the car does not roll when stuck in a jam on a hill. My heart is in my mouth at one point though, because I have to negotiate a very tight entrance to a car park, so tight I have to retract the power folding wing mirrors but thankfully we make our way trouble-free, to our space. Others have not been so fortunate, I see as I survey the parked cars with their various dents and scrapes. The other great thing about the Karoq is its satellite navigation system, which is a joy to use. There’s no faffing about, the driver just needs to know the postcode and can enter it without even needing a space in between characters. However, the female voice delivering the instructions unnervingly sounds like Theresa
May and there is an irritating delay at the most nerve-wracking of moments for instance, while tackling a roundabout where I need to know which exit to take. It’s also a sensitive soul, because while I reverse onto my driveway I try to park as near as possible to the lavender bush which lines the edge and it doesn’t like it. So much so, buzzers start sounding until the Karoq stops and refuses to move any further. Overall though, it’s a competent family vehicle.

Reds in Spain for ‘focused’ training LIVERPOOL manager, Jurgen Klopp, has flown his squad to Spain for a training camp following their early FA Cup exit. The Reds have a week’s break before they head to Old Trafford to take on Manchester United. And Klopp has confirmed they will make the most of the time by ‘going away for a couple of days to really focus on training’ adding that the change of scenery ‘has always worked out pretty well’ in the past. La Liga leaders secure young Real Mallorca star BARCELONA has signed Real Mallorca teen Chadi Riad. The club has seen off competition from Villarreal to secure the 15-year-old defender, who will move to Barca’s La Masia academy at the end of the season. The defender is a Moroccan youth international and will initially be registered to the Juvenil B U19 team. He was proclaimed champion of the Youth African Games when he played for his country’s U15 team after being a key player in the 3-1 win over Nigeria in July.
