THE latest BIG MAC fundraising extravaganza exceeded expectations. Hundreds turned out for Sunday’s mega music festival and to support Mojacar Area Cancer Support, or MACS, a charity providing invaluable assistance for cancer patients, survivors and carers across the region. This was the fifth edition of the annual event, now firmly established as one of the most important music and entertainment dates in the Almeria social calendar. An energetic demonstration of Zumba by the Alison Bramwell and Holly Newell groups got proceedings going at midday, setting the upbeat tone at the Hostal Rural venue in Turre. Then it was non-stop music all the way through to early evening, with outstanding live performances of pop, blues, soul, swing and rock ‘n’ roll on the two stages from an impres-

sive line-up of acts. Driftwood, Carl Lewis, Altoonas, Marilyn Shipley, The Memphis Rockers, Tony Justice & Paul Ingman, Jack Law, Mad On Blonde, the Fusion Charity Band, Rio MacRae, Bryony Harrison, Pulse, Katy McAndrew, Plan Bee, The Blues Club: all performed free of charge, everyone there to do their bit and support MACS. There was plenty of festivalstyle food to keep energy levels up, and more than 30 stalls did a brisk trade in home-made crafts, vintage clothes, jewellery, and more. And thanks to the generosity of local businesses and volunteers, there were great prizes up for grabs in the MACS raffle. There is of course a very serious cause behind the fun. The numerous MACS volunteers in charge of the event organise and keeping everything running smoothly on the day, proof of the commitment of many local

expatriates to charitable causes and their readiness to dedicate time and energy to helping others. Maggi Lake is one such volunteer. Maggi, who has lived in the area for many years, and was an original member of the Sexy Santas fundraisers, has been fundraising for MACS since 2010. She told the Euro Weekly News so many people give up their time for MACS precisely because it is such a worthy cause. “Cancer is just so wicked. Practically every family has had someone with cancer.” MACS was founded by Elaine Brown in 2007 after she was diagnosed with T-cell nonHodgkin lymphoma. Elaine wanted to create a group for cancer patients and their families to ‘bridge’ gaps in communication and understanding, and to ‘offer an ear and support.’ The group became a registered charity, and today there are six MACS shops, and many vol-

unteers, who provide a range of support services. Sadly cancer finally claimed Elaine’s life in September last year, but her granddaughter and MACS VicePresident Shannon Kay Edwards is keen to continue her amazing work. “This is our biggest event of the year. It takes a lot of preparation, but hopefully it keeps everyone entertained throughout the day,” Shannon told the Euro Weekly News. “Everyone pitches in and helps and gives their time for free. I think it’s because cancer touches everyone in some way, shape or form; unfortunately noone hasn’t been touched by cancer themselves or doesn’t know someone who’s been touched by cancer. “I think knowing that and the impact it has on people’s lives, I think it’s nice to give something back.” The total amount raised at Big Mac 5 is due to be announced this week.

Drug spot check arrests POLICE spot checks on vehicles in Almeria resulted in four drug-related arrests. Officers detained a 45year-old and a 27-year-old after finding 29 doses of cocaine and heroin and €615 in cash in their car.

They tried to get away when they saw the police control in Calle Hipocrates, but police caught up with them in a nearby street. A vehicle search in Calle Jovellanos led to the discovery of over 700 grammes of

hashish and the arrest of a 39 and a 33-year-old. The spot checks were part of a police plan to address drug sale and consumption in leisure zones and in the vicinity of schools and colleges.

A SIX-YEAR-OLD child needed hospital treatment after swallowing cocaine it thought was a sweet. The incident occurred while the child was being watched over by an uncle at the father’s home in Roquetas de Mar, the Guardia Civil reported. The father told officers as soon as he realised what had happened he rushed the child to the local health centre, from

where the six-year-old was taken by ambulance to the Poniente Hospital in El Ejido. The hospital alerted the Guardia Civil, reporting that the father walked out with the child without telling medical staff, after realising they were going to call social services. Guardia Civil detained the father on charges of family abandonment and a public health offence.

Carnival coming to city streets THE city streets will be the main focus of this year’s carnival celebrations in Almeria, the provincial capital’s Culture councillor has promised. Unveiling the full line-up of carnival events, Carlos Sanchez said there is a really extensive programme this year. The fun begins on Thursday February 28 with a junior fancy dress competition and the election of the carnival God and Goddess in the

Mirador de la Rambla, followed by a weekend of performances by different carnival music groups and activities like a carousel, falconry displays, puppet shows, workshops and street parades. Other planned carnival-related events in the city between February 28 and March 10 include a grand procession and a gala night of music and dance at the Maestro Padilla Auditorium.

Clean help THE Almeria Provincial Council announced it will invest €500,000 in the acquisition of dumper trucks and industrial sweeping machines for cleaning and maintenance services in municipalities with populations of less than 2,000. There are 65 municipalities in the province which qualify to request the equipment.

Centre stats ALMERIA residents visit their medical centres an average of seven times a year and emergencies once a year. Andalucia regional government figures revealed there were more than five million consultations overall last year in the province’s 230 health centres, 800,000 emergencies and 300,000 home visits.

Mental health TORRECARDENAS Mental Health Unit ran a workshop for Almeria Local Police on dealing sensitively with people with serious mental disorders and doing away with prejudices associated with these kinds of conditions. The workshop was part of the Almeria, Land Without Stigma mental health initiative.

Sent down A JUDGE in Almeria sentenced a 28-year-old to seven years behind bars for robbing two men at knifepoint in Almeria City, taking their mobile phones and the small amount of cash they were carrying. The mugger already had a record for similar crimes.

Fire ball A ROCK from an asteroid briefly entered the earth’s atmosphere at some 72,000km/h, creating a fire ball which passed in front of the province’s east coast about 116kms above the sea. The Calar Alto observatory in Gergal described it as a ‘really impressive and bright’ phenomenon.

Hewn into rock THIS village in Andalucia famous for buildings that are built into the side of a gorge has made it into a British newspaper ’s ranking of beautiful Spanish towns. Setenil de las Bodegas, in Cadiz Province, was chosen along with five others in The Times’ list of the most beautiful towns in Spain. The town sits at around 640 metres above sea level in the Sierra de Cadiz and is built around the Trejo River. Many buildings facing onto the

river have been carved out of a gorge side which now sticks out over the streets below. The Romans founded settlements in the area before the Moors later built up the town. Its natural defences were considered impregnable, but it attracted the attention of Castillan kings who saw it as a gateway to the territory of their Nasrid rivals. Attacks were mounted from 1407 until it was finally captured by the Juan II of Castilla in Sep-

Car-park theft blitz POLICE in El Ejido arrested a Spaniard, a Romanian and a Moroccan for blitzing a public carpark and breaking into numerous vehicles. The gang hit the parking area at the end of January in the early hours of the morning, smashing the windows of 15 cars to grab items of value. They also forced open a number of storerooms, stealing from one a bicycle worth €4,600. Police investigations were complicated by the lack of clues the

robbers left behind and by the fact there were no witnesses to the robberies. Police also had little luck trying to track the stolen items, saying they would have been sold immediately on the black market for cash, or exchanged for drugs or other items. Ultimately the investigation led to the arrest of the three suspects, identified as 27-year-old DMM, 20-year-old FNP, and 19-year-old MEA.

Uprooting illegal plantation POLICE discovered yet another illegal cannabis plantation in the province, this time hidden in a warehouse in Huercal de Almeria. Investigations into the premises on the San Rafael industrial estate began when officers became aware it was being lived in. Surveillance operations showed there was no sign of any business activity going on, but there was a noticeable smell of marihuana emanating from the premises. Police found 266 marihuana

plants, 1,500 grammes of marihuana buds, 34 electrical transformers, 30 halogen lamps, 30 600W bulbs, an air extractor, air filter, digital scales, €475 in cash and a 12-calibre shotgun. They also found an unauthorised connection to the general power supply to ensure sufficient electricity for the plantation. Police arrested a married couple who were using the warehouse as their residence on charges of an offence against public health and power supply fraud.

Common cause AUAN is working with other Andalucia homeowners’ associations to push the regional government on legal changes to resolve the issue of ‘irregular’ properties. “Our objective is to join forces and propose an urgent solution for the issue of access to water, electricity and paperwork for those awaiting legalisation via a town plan, so homeowners can live with dignity and be free from the worry of embargos and inheritance issues by being able to register their property in their own name at the land registry,” association president Maura Hillen said. “This is something they currently cannot do until the legalisation process is completed, something which can take decades, if it ever happens at all.” AUAN has met with Federation Extrarradio de Chiclana associations, reporting there are an estimated 14,000 irregular houses in the Cadiz municipality, awaiting legalisation via a town plan. AUAN also met with representatives of the Save Our Homes Axarquia (SOHA) platform in Malaga.

Rooftop chase ends in thief’s arrest

UNITED: Maura Hillen and AUAN members discuss joint action with leaders of Save Our Homes Axarquia. The draft text of a parliamentary bill developed by AUAN was a main point of discussion. If approved, it would allow properties on ‘asentamientos’ (houses awaiting legalisation via the execution of a town plan), to have access to a type of planning recognition called an AFO. This would permit owners to connect to available services and register their homes. This permission would not free homeowners from any obligation to contribute to the future urbanisation costs of their development and would not interrupt the legalisation process, says AUAN. The associations discussed the

need to speak to the newly elected Andalucia government and the political parties, AUAN undertaking to collaborate with this effort. “Residents on developments awaiting legalisation via a town plan have been tranquilised over the years by politicians and town halls into believing their town plan is just around the corner and about to be executed,” Hillen commented. PURSUIT: Officers involved in the chase. JOINT Guardia Civil and Local Police action led to the arrest of a suspected thief following a rooftop chase in Adra. A Guardia Civil patrol went to investigate at apartments in the town after receiving reports there was someone on waste ground next to the block trying to make a hole in the outside wall, seemingly to get into offices located on the ground floor. The Guardia patrol joined Local Police to take a closer look. When the man realised they were there he threw a stone at one of the officers, then climbed up a wall and tried to make a getaway across nearby roofs. Two officers went after him and the rest followed from the ground. During the chase the suspect jumped down, hitting his head, but kept running until officers managed to catch up with him and place him under arrest.

Backing sport values NIJAR Council has presented details of the School Olympics to be held later this month. Nearly 500 children from eight of the municipality’s schools are set to take part in the five-day event, which will feature a number of different sporting disciplines, among them athletics, basketball, hockey, swimming, football and table tennis. Nijar mayor Esperanza Perez said her administration was ‘proud’ to be relaunching the event, and support sport, a healthy lifestyle and team spirit, ‘in short, all the values which the different disciplines communicate,’ and which she said gave the children ‘the opportunity to realise their potential.’

Upgrades are going well UPGRADES to Calle Carretera and Avenida Felipe VI in Huercal-Overa are going well, the council reported. Mayor Domingo Fernandez has been to check out progress on the improvements being carried out by the local authority’s Infrastructure and Services Maintenance Department, along with the councillor in charge of this area, Blas Sanchez, and said the works should be completed within a couple of weeks. The improvements to Calle Carretera include putting in new pavements and access ramps for people with reduced mobility, and creating a new pedestrian crossing on the crossroads. Robbery case remains open GUARDIA CIVIL have made one arrest for a house break-in in Puebloblanco in Nijar earlier this month, but are continuing with their investigations and haven’t ruled out further detentions. The Guardia said one or more robbers got into the farmhouse by forcing their way through iron bars on a bedroom window, getting away with electronic items and

€500 in cash, which had been set aside in an envelope for paying greenhouse workers. Investigations, including studying security camera footage, led to the identity of one of the suspected thieves, one of the farm’s employees. A second man captured by the cameras had his face covered, and has yet to be identified.

Criminal network busted by Cathy Elelman A GUARDIA Civil investigation into the money laundering and drug trafficking activities of a criminal network led to seven arrests and the seizure of more than €800,000. The Guardia launched Operation Actinolita in September after a patrol in Huercal de Almeria observed two individuals loading a van with black plastic bags. When officers went to check out what was going on, they found cash of up to €825,955 stashed in compartments of the van. The two individuals were unable to explain where the money

officers’ questions. Suspicions were immediately raised that the money could be related to criminal activities, and under the directions of an Almeria court and Almeria Special Anti-Drug Public Prosecutor, investigations began into the origin of the cash. Investigations revealed the individuals formed part of a well-co-ordinated network dedicated to introducing hashish from Morocco to Spain via shipments to the Cadiz coast, which was then sold throughout Spain and other EU countries, the profits being laundered through property acquisitions.

Easter at its best HUERCAL-OVERA Council is on a mission to involve local residents in making the town look at its very best for Easter. The local authority’s Tourism Department has organised the first Embellishment Competition to ‘highlight the streets’ charms’ during the Easter week celebrations, which in Huercal-Overa have National Tourist Interest classification. The competition is open to all residents, with the idea they embellish the balconies, windows and façades of buildings, whether located on the streets the Easter processions pass through or not. The rules also state the embellishments should be appropriate to the nature of Easter in terms of decorum, and should not get in the way of the

processions’ path. The decorations should remain in place throughout Easter, and participants will have to send in one or more photos showing the fruits of their embellishment labours. Competition entries will be judged for composition, ornamental quality, overall harmony and design. The best efforts will be rewarded with a €200 prize, second place will win €100, and there will be prizes of €50 for the next best. Huercal-Overa mayor Domingo Fernandez encouraged as many people as possible to participate in the competition, commenting: “Adorning your balconies for what is without doubt our great week will also give a pretty image of our streets to the thousands of visitors we receive on those days.”

Saving animals for 30 years THE PAWS-PATAS animal charity reaches an important milestone this year, providing shelter and homes for stray and abandoned animals for 30 years. Over the last three decades PAWS-PATAS has saved and rehomed thousands of dogs and cats in Spain, Holland, the UK, Germany and Belgium. In addition, the organisation’s Trapping, Neutering, Returning (TNR) campaign for feral cats has steadily grown, ensuring the

local cat population is monitored and controlled to the best of the charity’s ability and within the scope of its funds. Earlier this month the organisation held its AGM, the Executive Committee setting out priorities for the next 12 months. Top of the agenda was fundraising to finance the charity’s shelter and work, and four areas in particular at this time: the quarantine isolation unit, the Jackie Naylor new cattery building, flooding re-

serves, and the TNR campaign. “We are spending the donations we receive for TNR as quickly as we receive them, and with so many pleas coming in for help with pregnant cats in every colony we need to start another TNR neutering campaign with some urgency,” commented Executive Committee member Chrissie Cremore. Judge denies claim By Sally Underwood THE judge presiding over a negligent manslaughter investigation into two-year-old Julen’s death on a plot in Totalan has rejected the

landowner’s claim to be given inside access to the trial. David Serrano’s lawyers had asked the judge to name him a ‘personada,’ a legal title naming someone as an in-

terested party in a trial and allowing them access to the details of the proceedings. The judge denied the claim, saying Serrano had ‘not specified on what basis

he has asked for it; an essential point in applying for it, either as an injured party or as someone under investigation.’ The same court has authorised a series of measures to secure the site where the incident took place, however. The judge ruled specialists could carry out work to reinforce the area where large amounts of earth were re-

moved to prevent land movement once the Guardia Civil has finished its investigations. These works, which will begin this week, will include shoring up embankments and slopes. Meanwhile, a court will continue to collect reports and statements to carry out its investigation in the negligent homicide case.

Expat corpse horror THE mummified body of a British woman, 71, has been found at a property where the daughter and granddaughter reportedly lived alongside the corpse for up to a year. Guardia Civil discovered the ‘skeletal and mummified’ remains under a mattress, still wearing clothes and surrounded by air fresheners at a house in Istan, close to Marbella. The macabre finding, investigated by the Benemerita Judicial Police Unit, was made in the early hours of

Saturday after a call from the daughter of the deceased. According to reports, she contacted the police after the dead woman’s husband found out and told her and her teenage daughter to go to the police. Officers visited the property and reportedly found the mother ’s body hidden under a mattress and card-

board. Initial inspections and a forensic examination carried out at the Institute of Legal Medicine (IML) in Malaga, found no sign of violence. Investigators believe she may have died of natural causes, although this is still to be confirmed by a postmortem. As well as the cause of death, examiners want to find out exactly when, though it is believed it could have been last March, based on statements by family members.

Talks update

Staff plan SPAIN’S government has approved a decree that would see 1,735 state workers hired to cope with the effects of Brexit in the civil service, at borders and for expatriates. The government is set to take on 875 extra civil servants across various government departments, 860 at ports and airports. The workers are also set to help the roughly 300,000 British expatriates living in Spain, according to plans approved at a Council of Ministers meeting on Friday. Ministers said Spain had the means to cope with the aftermath of Brexit but that certain departments needed extra resources. It comes as the Spanish government, the British embassy and Spain’s Directorate General of Traffic (DGT) continue to call on expatriates to ensure their paperwork is in order before Brexit. Separately, a human resources organisation has said companies employing British staff members should ensure they can prove their workers are legally residing in the country ahead of post-Brexit labour inspections. In these uncertain times it is easy to become overwhelmed by the legalities and sometimes conflicting information. But it isn’t as difficult as it initially seems. We hope that by sharing our experiences readers too can follow some relatively simple steps to ensure life runs smoothly after Brexit - deal or no deal. To explain, we have renewed our

passports, even though there were months left on them, to eliminate potential problems when travelling overseas post-Brexit (many airlines for example won’t permit you on board if your passport has fewer than six months to run). This can be done easily online at www.gov.uk/renew-adult-passport, simply fill in your details and upload a photograph via your phone or computer. It really is that easy, with the system taking you every step of the way. At each stage of the process text messages keep you informed - even to when the DHL delivery of the passport to your home is due to arrive In addition, our padrons - which are vital for all sorts of paperwork as well as benefiting the local council when it comes to calculating government grants (see next week’s EWN for a fuller explanation) - have been updated at our town hall, where the staff were only too happy to help. Not only that, but we have renewed our Spanish residencias to ensure we

are in possession of the official NIE card. These are issued at the Foreigner Office or National Police station, depending on where you live, and are now a handy credit card size. They are also essential for renewing your Spanish driving licence or swapping your UK one - as we have done well ahead of Brexit. So no matter what the outcome, we know we can continue to drive here and in Europe. You can do this at your nearest Trafico (DGT) office, or if you don’t speak Spanish, a gestor (Spanish administrator) will deal with all of the paperwork for you. We are in the process of updating our

The key is to break the issues down methodically, and tackle them one at a time. Police said the man ‘took many precautions’ to protect his identity, even hiding his real name from his wife. Officers began investigating in August 2017 using the code name ‘Operation Jack-

Football trainer in child porn arrest POLICE in Spain have arrested eight people aged between 21 and 66, for allegedly exchanging child pornography through the Internet. National Police officers made arrests in Segovia, Sevilla, Guipuzcoa, Madrid, Zaragoza and Malaga, and a large amount of computer material was seized. In Sevilla, a 21-year-old junior boys football team trainer was among those arrested. Police said another man had served time in prison,

and by mistake, sent pornographic files to the people who monitored his restraining order against his former partner. A 25-year-old man was arrested in Madrid who it is claimed shared videos of girls between the ages of 10 and 12 via several instant messaging channels and Internet chats. The investigation began after Spanish police were tipped off by colleagues in the United States and also involved Europol.

Five die in horror smash FIVE people died in a crash between a lorry and a car in southern Spain last Thursday. The accident happened on the A-394 between Utrera and Arahal in the province of Sevilla accordi n g t o t h e 11 2 A n d a l u c i a e m e r gency control centre. The five male victims, aged from 19 to 48 and from Las Cabezas de San Juan, were travel-

ling in the van according to officials. The lorry driver was also injured and transferred to hospital. Guardia Civil traffic officers are investigating the cause of the accident. In a separate incident in Almeria a 48-year-old man died after his car overturned in the early hours of the same morning in El Ejido.

Refreshment break A JET2 flight from Glasgow to Tenerife had to divert to Manchester Airport after it was claimed there was no water for tea and coffee. Flight LS155 had left Scotland and was flying over the Republic of Ireland when it was redirected after a plumbing issue was reported, the Daily Record reports. The Boeing 737 was bound for the Canary Islands when it was diverted. An airline spokeswoman said: “There was a technical issue with water on board. There wasn’t water for tea and coffee.” Passengers were transferred onto another flight and were being ‘well looked after.’

Dismembered corpse found in a freezer THE body of a dismembered woman, last seen by her family 18 months ago, was found in a freezer at a property in Alcala de Henares, near Madrid. A 42-year-old man, who has reportedly lived in the rented house for the last two years, has been arrested on suspicion of murder. The Russian victim, 22, had been missing since September 2017, but her disappearance was only reported on December 30 by her ‘estranged’ family after numerous failed attempts to contact her.

Investigating officers visited the property, where the detainee told them the young woman ‘no longer resided with him.’ A search warrant was requested and last Thursday evening, police made the grisly discovery in a freezer in the bathroom. A post-mortem was due to be carried out to determine when the young woman died, but according to sources, it is possible the suspect lived with the body in the house for some time.

Jose Dominguez said steps taken over the past decade had brought Spain into the lead on renewable e n e rg y. LOW-COST: Train travel may soon be cheaper than other modes of transport.

Full speed at low-cost RENFE’s project to launch a low-cost version of the current AVE service is set to be put in motion next year, according to company president Isaias Taboas. Taboas discussed Renfe’s company strategy for 20192021 during a meeting with the press, but did not release much information surrounding the project or what the service would entail as they are still working on the fine details. The president did say the

goal of the service is to attract clients who use their car as a mode of transport because they consider the train too expensive. The tariffs could be 40 per cent lower than traditional AVE tickets. Renfe’s main reason for starting the venture is to continue growing after 2020 when the railway sector opens its doors to other competitors who can offer a similar service to AVE. Taboas said the company was convinced that with the new ser-

vice they would continue to create revenue despite the arrival of competitors to the market. According to company data, the service will potentially increase sales 16 per cent by 2023, raking in €4.6 billion and by 30 per cent by 2028 to a revenue of €5.3 billion. Taboas explained the project will demand an investment of €3 billion in materials, and they plan to bring into service 200 new trains in March of this year, valued at €1.7 billion.

The school said in a statement that it was working with police on the investigation which remains ongoing.

AVENIDA MARINA BAIXA in La Cala de Finestrat has closed to traffic as channelling the treacherous La Cala stream progresses. Two British pensioners lost their lives when they were swept away after the stream flooded in 2011 and a Spanish man drowned there during the storms of December 2016. More than 100 of the 250 concrete box-culverts, each weighing 12 tons, which are needed to create the subterranean channel, are in position and the remainder are now being placed beneath the Avenida from the roundabout down to the beach. Work is also being carried out on a deposit to collect surface water, some of which will flow out to sea while the remainder is diverted to La Cala’s main drains. “This is a huge project that affects traffic and the entrances to several buildings’ parking areas,” Finestrat’s Public Works councillor Tomas Selles admitted. “We have reserved spaces in the beach car park for residents and want to thank them and local business owners for their understanding and patience,” continued Selles. “We expect to be on schedule and by Easter Week the Avenida should be open to traffic. And, most important of all, we hope to solve La Cala de Finestrat’s historic flooding problems.”

‘Cat killer’ arrested POLICE in Velez-Malaga have arrested a 46-year-old man accused of torturing and killing two small animals before leaving their bodies in prominent public spaces. The alleged crimes came to light on Tuesday morning when a dead cat, showing signs of torture, was found hoisted up a flag pole in the middle of the town. Later that day, concerned residents reportedly found a second body, that of a skinned rabbit, alongside a note signed ‘El Imbecil,’ (the imbecile). The letter read: ‘Dear lady: Yesterday it was a cat, today it is a rabbit that was run over by a national imbecile. Do not call me: I do not want to hurt your sensibility and there are more people floating in the Mediterranean than ‘your rabbit’.’ Police said the note also included a full name, leading them to arrest a man with the initials OCM and originally from Barcelona.

nie Lenox: “There was a time when they used to say that behind every great man there had to be a great woman. But in these times of change you know that it’s no longer true.” Sisters here in Spain and around the world are doing it for themselves. Women are proving beyond any shadow of a doubt that they are just as capable as men at creating innovative new businesses, overseeing companies, at holding political office, at reaching the top of their chosen professions. Here in Spain, both the current and the former deputy prime ministers are women, more than half the cabinet are female, and over 50 per cent of judges are women. It’s also the case that around one third of businesses in this country are run by women, according to the Mastercard Index of Women Entrepreneurs. This would all have been unimaginable not so very long ago. That’s not to say there is yet a level gender playing field in Spain or elsewhere. Inequalities between the genders remain in many areas of society, in many countries, many women having to fight every step of the way to be treated in the same way as their male counterparts. The most recent World Economic Forum Global Gender Gap Report covering the areas of health, education, economy and politics in 144 major and emerging economies showed that while the overall gender gap has very slightly improved, at the current rate of change it will take 108 years to close, while differences in economic opportunity, including pay between men and women, are so great that gender parity remains 202 years off. she’d do if didn’t work, “it has to work, end of. I’ll make sure it works.” Well Harrison’s certainly does work, but Nicki stresses this is not just down to her, but also to her fantastic team, as well as friends and family. Nicki already had extensive experience in running her own shop before moving to Spain. She and Lee ran their own newsagents and convenience store back in the UK, working seven days a week, 15 hours a day, and building the business up into a busy, thriving concern. The decision to relocate to the Almanzora Valley 12 years ago was driven by the feeling that this part of the world would allow them and their children to enjoy a slower paced, more laid back way of life, and it’s a move which Nicki says was absolutely the right choice. Not that Nicki doesn’t still work incredibly hard, but then she says, “I’ve always worked - I’d be bored if I didn’t!” But Nicki has managed to strike a good balance between working to the best of her ability to make sure her business continues to be successful and enjoying some downtime. And despite the challenges and responsibility which being in charge of a business brings, Nicki wouldn’t have it any other way. “I like being my own boss!”

and she has been a guest on a whole bunch of TV and radio programmes, ranging from the Graham Norton Show to Woman’s Hour. She has also been recognised by her peers from the world of food, receiving the 2009 Lifetime Achievement Award from the Guild of Food Writers and being Honoured as Freeman of the Worshipful company of Bakers of London in 2014. In 2012 she was made a CBE for services to culinary arts. The impression of Mary Berry is that despite becoming one of the UK’s best-known cooks and publishing more than 75 books, home and family has always been a priority for her, and her approach to cooking reflects this. Inspiring role model OLYMPIC gymnast Simone Biles is a sporting phenomenon. The diminutive 21-year-old force of nature is the most decorated American gymnast ever and the third most decorated female gymnast in history. She is often described as the greatest gymnast of all time, and is widely regarded as an outstanding role model for young women. Biles really shot to world fame at the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro when she became the individual allround, vault and floor gold medallist. Then after an extended break, she triumphed at last year’s World Gymnastics Championships, becoming the first gymnast in three decades to win a medal in all six women’s events, and taking her total world championship gold medal tally to a record-breaking 14.

In 2016, Biles was chosen as one of BBC’s 100 Women and was one of the finalists for Time magazine’s Person of the Year, and in 2018 she was a BBC Sports Personality of the Year nominee. Making science history CHEMICAL engineer Frances Arnold made science history in 2018, becoming only the fifth woman ever to win the Nobel Prize for chemistry. The 62-year-old American professor of chemical engineering at the California Institute of Technology was awarded the prize for her directed evolution method to engineer enzymes with improved and or novel functions. Frances Arnold has had a highly distinguished career, receiving a number of prestigious awards, including the US National Medal for Technology and Innovation in 2013, which was presented to her by President Obama. She is also one of only a handful of people to have been named in the three US National Academies of Engineering, Science and

Medicine. She is certainly a fantastic role model for young women considering a career in science, and yet she did herself flirt with the idea of going in a completely different professional direction. She studied mechanical and aerospace engineering at Princeton University, concentrating on research into solar energy, but she also took classes in subjects like economics, Russian, and Italian, and wondered about moving in the direction of international affairs. In the end she did take an engineering and scientific path, focusing first on developing sustainable sources of energy, then later gaining a PhD in chemical engineering from the University of California-Berkeley, and at the

February 11 was the UNESCO International Day of Women and Girls in Science to raise awareness about this particular gender gap. The UN uses the day to serve as a reminder that the science and technology communities need to harness as much talent as possible, attracting new ideas, perspectives and creativity, diversifying research, and that women should have full and equal access to and participation in science.

ITV reveals Victoria series three premiere Richard Shanley UK viewers won’t have to wait too much longer to see Victoria’s third series, thankfully. For the first time ever, the regal drama is currently airing in the US as part of PBS’s Masterpiece programming block before it even has a UK premiere date, which has ticked off fans here at home. ITV was at first hesitant to update viewers on when it would be bringing them the new episodes,

but does now have a firm timeline of when Her Royal Highness Jenna Coleman will be back on screens. The channel’s boss Kevin Lygo, has confirmed to the Radio Times, that Victoria will definitely return ‘in the spring or summer.’ Asked why there was such a long delay in transmission, Lygo would only say: “We have to get it right and put it up against the right things on the BBC and elsewhere.” We’re sure fans will be thrilled with that reasoning! Still, at least there’s solid news on when Victoria and Albert’s epic romance will continue play-

ing out. The third series picks up in ‘turbulent times’ for the Queen and her royal court in 1848, as her advisors warn her to leave London to avoid the possibility of an uprising. vvSURPRISE, surprise! The Public Prosecution Department smells a rat in the Ministry of the Interior’s plot to rob notes - ie evidence - accumulated by Luis Barcenas, former Partido Popular treasurer. For those recently arrived from Outer Space, this occurred because Luis Barcenas was dishing the dirt on the PP’s dodgy funding and other fiscal sins. Judges handed out verdicts and sentences at the end of the Gurtel confidence at the end of last May, which put Pedro Sanchez in the Moncloa and the PSOE in government. In 2013 this likelihood prompted the Ministry of the Interior to launch Operation Kitchen, protecting the party’s interests, not the state’s. The Ministry spent €600,000 of public money, some of which was used to bribe Barcenas’ chauffeur to spy on him. Inevitably, the now-retired police chief Jose Manuel Villarejo also played a starring role in the conspiracy, as his presence appears to be a given in these cases. As it’s also a given that the Public Prosecution department took years to come up with a conclusion which occurred to the rest of us long before.

Delayed reaction Back to the jackboot THE Supreme Court, which is prosecuting members of the regional government who declared Cataluña an independent republic on October 27, 2017, has preferred not to accept international observers. Not the best of moves. No-one questions Spain’s democratic credentials, at least no-one living here, but this decision makes it less easy to erase the international image of poor downtrodden Cataluña crushed under Fran-

co’s cast-off jackboots. Allowing, as their lordships have, live coverage of the sessions is less convincing than they imagine. For a world fed a diet of reality television it will be so mind-numbingly boring that commentators will revert to the jackboot theory anyway.

Neutral tones A LEADING seaman in the Spanish Navy received 30 days in the glasshouse for signing an

anti-Franco manifesto. This responded to an earlier manifesto by 144 high-ranking officers, many of them retired, defending Francisco Franco and justifying the military uprising against the Republican government in July 1936. Another group made a public declaration the one which landed the seaman in hot water which supported the sovereignty of the Spanish people. The disciplinary proceedings against him claimed criticising the dead dictator ‘undermined the Armed Forces’ neutrality.’

British colony status GIBRALTAR voted almost unanimously to remain inside the European Union, so is not particularly happy with the prospect of a hard Brexit. Spain has been breathing down their necks for centuries, and now, adding insult to injury, Brussels has announced that if Britain says adieu, farewell and goodbye without a deal, Gibraltar will have the status of a British colony. Spain has succeeded in manoeuvring Brussels into using this term in a document prepared for the increasingly likely eventuality of a no-deal Brexit. Nothing is guaranteed to make Brexiteers froth at the mouth like accusing them of having little idea of what they were really voting for, but how many were prepared for this one?

A powerful message? I’M not normally someone who pays any attention to award ceremonies. To me, the Oscars, the Grammys and the Brits are just evenings where a bunch of actors, singers and musicians get to tell each other how great they are. H o w e v e r, sometimes a worthwhile m o m e n t emerges which is worth mentioning. At Sunday night’s Grammys it

was widely expected that Shallow by Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper (from the soundtrack to A Star is Born) would clean up. However, it was the controversial This Is America by Childish Gambino (actor Donald Glover) which won Best Song and Best Record. The video for the song is so powerful and disturbing, with its highlighting of American gun violence that I’m not sure it could be

classed as entertainment. However, it’s a very important piece of social commentary. This Is America is not the first record dealing with gun violence. The Boomtown Rats’ massive hit I Don’t Like Mondays and Pearl Jam’s Jeremy were both songs about school shootings. Sometimes music is, and should be, about pure entertainment. But we also need music which can deliver a powerful message. Childish Gambino didn’t turn up to collect his Grammys.

THERE are some tree-mendous trunks and terrific tree roots, found all over Spain. I recently found some really scary trees in Palma City centre, Mallorca. Can you spot the ghoulish face? Look at its eyes and mouth. Who yer gonna trunk call - ghost busters! Branching out to the Costa del Sol, I found another monster tree root in Paloma Park, Benalmadena. There’s creatures great and small in the park, but look closely and you will see there’s a crocodile under that tree. The ‘creature’ is massive - look at the size of its head, legs and tail. With Spain coming second only to Sweden for the largest amount of forests in Europe, there must be dozens of weird and wonderful trees in your neck of the woods. Rapid turnover I HAVE been enjoying the new series of Bargain Loving Brits. However, after doing a bit of Googling and Facebooking following the first episode, it appears that one couple who took on a bar have already called it a day. The bar has been redecorated in red - they painted it blue - and from Facebook threads, appears to have changed hands around October. NEWS that Spain intends to work more closely with France and Germany on EU issues following Brexit is welcome if the country does not forgo its ties with Britain. Discussions between officials from Spain, France and Germany have so far focused on bringing Spain into the fold of leading EU member states. It comes as Irene Lozano, Secretary of State for Global Spain, said the country should strive to occupy the void left by Britain in the EU following Brexit. The official added that Spain and Britain must continue to work hand in hand over Europe and internationally. If Lozano’s comments are indicative of Spain’s policy towards Britain going forward then it is encouraging. Spain and Britain share many reasons for co-operation, including large communities of expatriates living in each other’s countries. Recent bilateral agreements on voting rights and other issues post-Brexit have shown officials in London and Madrid are keen to continue working closely together. Even the longrunning dispute over Gibraltar has so far failed to derail their efforts. If Britain and Spain continue to develop such ties then Madrid’s desire to make its presence felt in the EU should also be welcome. Spain, which would be the fourth-largest economy in the bloc following Britain’s departure, would be ideally placed to act as its third power alongside France and Germany. It could also prove a valuable ally for Britain in the EU after Brexit.

A month for health awareness THIS month marks an important series of national and international health awareness days, aiming to draw attention to some of the most important causes of our time. Beginning today (Thursday), with European Sexual Health

The International Childhood Cancer Day organisation (ICCD) explained: “ICCD 2019 campaign focuses on ‘No More Pain’ and ‘No More Loss’ for children with cancer and their families. To achieve this goal, governments, healthcare providers, industry, parent support groups and society at large must ensure the right to early diagnosis; the right to access life-saving essential medicines, the right to appropriate and quality medical treatments, the right to treatment without pain and suffering, and when a cure is not attainable, the right of the child to pain-free death. Next Friday, February 22, is World Day of Encephalitis and Wednesday February 27 is World Organ Transplant Day.

In the beginning were e-books, and behold, Amazon founder Jeff Bezos saw they were good and began the Kindle and it was downhill from there for books on dead trees. And yet... Who would have thought it, but after peaking four years ago, e-books have steadily been giving back ground to their traditional counterparts. Their share drops slightly each year, from making up 20 per cent of all book sales at their peak in 2015. Let’s look at the technology of The Book as it fights its way back. The Book is innovative to an extreme in this chips-with-everything era. No wires, no electric circuits, no batteries, nothing to be connected or switched on. TRADITIONAL BOOKS: A demise greatly exaggerated. quentially numbered sheets of paper (recyclable), each capable of holding hundreds of bits of information. The pages are locked together with a custom-fit device called a binder which keeps the sheets in their correct sequence. The Book may be taken up at any time and used merely by opening it. The Book never crashes or requires

rebooting, though like other display devices it can become unusable if dropped in the bath. The browse feature lets you move instantly to any sheet, and forward or backwards as you wish. Many come with an index feature, which pinpoints the exact location of any selected information for instant retrieval.

You can also make personal notes next to Book text entries with an optional programming tool, the Portable Erasable Nib Cryptic Intercommunication Language Stylus (PENCILS). So far, so attractive. But like LPs versus MP3s, at least for now, the traditional and the electronic book both seem here to stay. I love fondling a musty book and even getting my nose right into it, but even US Customs might have trouble separating me from my cherished Kindle. A couple of clicks on any of its hundreds, nay thousands, of titles, and the world’s great literature is mine. So from magazines to music, like so many of today’s ‘media consumers,’ my compromise is to stay traditional for the tactile look and feel, but go digital for convenience. One thing’s for certain; never again will I set out on holiday lugging that ridiculous rucksack, groaning under the latest bonkbusters.

Paper vs pixels AS a child I remember dear old grandpops berating my parents when they bought me a book for Christmas: ‘The lad’s already got a book!’ Now I’ve got thousands of the things. E-readers were invented two decades ago, but it took 2007’s first Kindle to revolutionise the market. E-books are read on an ubiquity of devices, but dedicated e-readers continue their steady sales, with one estimate saying that Amazon alone has now sold around 100 million Kindles (other brands are available), while flogging half a billion e-books a year. E-readers weigh less than a paperback, start at less than €100, hold several thousand books, run for a month on charge, and some are even waterproof. Pity they don’t look great in a bookcase.

Big screen favourites together again TWO of Spain’s hottest movie stars, Antonio Banderas and Penelope Cruz, are reuniting to take lead roles in Sony Pictures’ upcoming film, Dolor y Gloria (Pain and Glory). The movie is directed by Pedro Almodovar, who took the reins of the last film the pair starred in together, I’m so Excited, in 2013. A trailer - more a collection of unconnected scenes kicks off with a shot of 58year-old Banderas’ character, film director ‘in decline’ Salvador Mallo, sitting at the bottom of a pool.

It then shifts to footage of Cruz’s character holding a young boy, while in another clip, Banderas is sitting peacefully with a blonde woman. The short trailer features various characters from Mal-

It seems to imply 48-yearold Cruz’s character is Mallo’s mother as he reflects on his life. T h e film is released March 22. While Banderas only starred in I’m So Excited, Cruz has been in six of Almodovar’s films over the years, including Live Flesh in 1997, followed by All About My Mother in 1999.

Ramos said getting engaged is ‘a very special moment for us after being together for so long and forming such a fantastic family’. A star-studded guest list is inevitable, and anybody invited will be asked to leave mobiles and cameras at the door of the secret wedding location, ‘so that celebrities attending the after party can enjoy themselves without fear of being snapped.’ The excited pair got together in 2012. Food capital status features in UK press FISH: With crispy, light batter.

A taste of home … HAILING from the north west of England meant a takeaway of fish and chips was a Friday night treat when living in the UK. The Friday treat has continued here at Olive Tree Farm, although I now make it myself. Although I have tried various types of fish to batter, without a doubt our favourite is fresh Cod (Bacalao). As we are also mushy pea fans, I often make my own, which is easy to do. Although not quite the bright green of the tinned version. To get a really crispy, light batter, use self-raising flour, plus an extra pinch of Bicarbonate of Soda. I usually use one cup of flour, and enough freshly opened beer to give a smooth semi-thick batter. If it is too runny it will fall off the fish as you add it to your oil when cooking. When you are ready to start cooking, pat the fish portions dry using kitchen paper, and then toss through flour coating all sides, then dip into the batter and add to your oil, which needs to be around 190ºC. This amount of batter is enough for five decent sized portions of fish, which I cook in batches of two or three at a time. Cook until golden and drain on kitchen paper before serving. If you manage to get hold of the Marrowfat peas (I got mine from one of the English supermarkets) here is what you do to make your own traditional mushy peas! Tip: If you wish to make a large batch, they freeze well. Dissolve one tablespoon of Bicarbonate of Soda in a litre of boiling water and when dissolved add one cup of Marrowfat peas (180 g - four servings) and stir through. Cover and leave to soak for at least 12 hours. I leave them overnight. Once soaked, drain using a sieve and add to a pan,

NEWS of Almeria’s status as 2019 Spanish Gastronomic Capital has reached the UK press. An article in the Guardian newspaper focuses on the city’s best eateries, pointing out Almeria is in the fine dining spotlight this year thanks to its national food capital title. In her extensive piece Fiona Dunlop focuses on what she considers are 10 of the provincial capital’s best bars and restaurants. The food and travel writer, and author of books including Andaluz - a Food Journey through Southern Spain, recommends trying a variety of establishments, going from the most traditional offering local classics, to more contemporarystyle eateries. Dunlop talks about the quality and variety of cuisine available

in the city, enthusing also about decor, friendly service and ambience. She refers to the “enticing, buzzy atmosphere” in one of the old city’s longest established tapas bars, describes a Moroccan tearoom as “a tranquil retreat,” and says the menu of a new restaurant and cocktail bar in the Paseo de Almeria is “a blast of world food.” “Some find it a bit of a mystery that Almeria has been

named Spain’s gastronomic capital for 2019,” the writer remarks, but suggests it is in fact something of an unknown treasure. “The modest city in the southeast corner of the peninsula is often overlooked and draws fewer visitors than the rest of Andalucia. Yet it boasts Europe’s largest Islamic fortification after Granada’s Alhambra.” She highlights the city’s

Moorish past and the influence of the city’s proximity to the North African coast on its rich culinary traditions, writing, ‘Islamic flavours don’t stop there as, following centuries of connecting Almeria’s traders with the Arab world, there are daily ferries from Algeria and Morocco. Their imprint is part of the food scene - along with succulent seafood fresh from the Mediterranean.”

House demolition off A RETIRED British couple can celebrate good news after the courts suspended a demolition order on their home in Albox following 16 years of litigation. Noel and Christine Payne, now in their 70’s, had the house built in 2003, with planning permission and a licence of occupation. The couple’s lawyer, Gerardo Vazquez, successfully argued the property could be regularised via an AFO administrative certificate to regularise housing, and that according to article 108.3 of the LJCA (contentious administrative law), demolition is not the only means to execute a sentence nullifying planning permission. Re-enacting marble history MACAEL is aiming to attract more than 20,000 visitors to what will be the third edition of a three-day celebration of the history of the municipality’s marble industry. The local council has just renewed the contract with an Almeria-based production company on the organisation of the Canteros y Caciques en Lucha

The event relates the story of the workers’ fight against the marble chiefs, with many local residents taking an active part. The event aims to attract more visitors to the municipality, high-

At this year’s event there will also be a focus on music and cuisine, in recognition of the Almeria 2019 Spanish Gastronomic Capital status; the number of tapas based on traditional Macael recipes available in quarry workers’ bars will be doubled.

Former mayor banned FORMER Albox mayor Jose Garcia Navarro has accepted a seven-year ban from holding public office, for not following the correct procedures in connection with appointments to several council fixed-term posts between 2007 and 2013. The Public Prosecutor originally asked for a 10-year ban, but an agreement was reached at a hearing in an Almeria court last week. According to the prosecutor, Garcia Navarro had been aware he was acting on the ‘margin’

of the legal system, without justifying the reasons for turning to temporary contracts. He also said he failed to justify why these individuals were chosen, hence ‘putting his own will before the general interests of the local authority and those of individuals potentially interested in the posts.’ The prosecutor indicated that the former mayor had endorsed contracts ‘without taking into account criteria of need, merit and ability.’

Rural job scheme THE provincial director of the State Employment Public Service (SEPE) visited Castro de Filabres, Cantoria and Bentarique last week to see first-hand how a number of Rural Employment Development Programme projects are progressing. Jose Carlos Lara met with the mayors of the three municipalities and visited the sites of the various projects: garden area maintenance, repairs to urban infrastructure and improvements to public buildings. He was also

given information about projects which could be subsidised by the programme. The rural employment programme is financed by the state, with contributions from the Andalucia regional government, the provincial council and the local authorities in the municipalities receiving assistance. SEPE funding covers works personnel costs, while funding provided by other administrations covers the costs of materials needed for projects.

‘Key tool’ for councils ALMERIA Provincial Council president Javier A Garcia has officially inaugurated an office providing assistance to Almanzora councils on urban development issues. Located in the old Macael Town Hall, the new Municipalities Assistance Unit covers 22 areas: Albanchez, Alcontar, Armuña del Almanzora, Bacares, Bayarque, Cantoria, Chercos, Cobdar, Fines, Laroya, Lijar, Lucar, Macael, Olula del Rio, Partaloa, Purchena, Seron, Sierro, Somontin, Sufli, Tijola and Urracal. Garcia described the units as ‘a key tool’ for the smallest municipalities in particular for consultations on daily matters.

IKEA takes new direction SWEDISH furniture giant, IKEA, is always at the forefront of new ideas when it comes to furnishing your home or business. Taking a completely new direction, the Nordic powerhouse of flat-pack furniture is making a move into the realm of rentals. And that’s renting out furniture, not property. The group has decided to start renting out furniture to businesses and will begin with its office furniture. If it goes well, the scheme may well be extended to kitchens as well. The idea would be to rent out office furniture such as desks and chairs for a determined period of time, after which the businesses would then return the furniture which would then be used for recycling or even for resale if the company wanted to upgrade their furniture and rent

The process is part of the transformation of the group’s business model, which moves away from selling products purely in stores outside the city and lets customers collect and assemble their own items.
