Julen’s parents just want to know the facts JULEN’S parents, Victoria Sanchez and Jose Rosello, have attended the Malaga court investigating a possible ca se o f n e g l i g en t mansla u g h t e r o v e r th e death of their toddler last month. According to Spanish media, the couple went to the proceedings to learn how their son died, and ‘are the first people to want to get to t h e b o t t o m o f th e facts.’ The family are said to have employed a Malagabased lawyer to represent them during the investigation. The judge presiding over the inv e st i g a t i o n h a s already made a ruling over a claim made by the owner of land where Julen fell down a 72-metre borehole. David Serrano’s lawyers had asked the judge to name him a ‘personada,’ a legal title naming someone as an interested party in a trial and allowing them access to the details of the proceedings.

Mayor accused over ‘illegal’ wells THE mayor of Totalan, where two-year-old Julen died in January, has been accused of illegally granting permission for drilling wells in exchange for votes. A member of opposition party Izquierda Unida (IU), Jesus de Oses Gomez, accused Mayor Miguel Angel of allowing three ‘illegal’ wells to be drilled near the farm where the toddler fell down a 72-metre borehole. Jesus de Oses Gomez said the mayor had failed to prevent the wells “with a clear electoral intention.” The mayor declined to respond to the allegations in the Spanish media.

Kidnapped POLICE have intercepted a Moroccan man as he allegedly tried to smuggle two of his children out of Spain at Motril Port. The 43-year-old, who is a resident of Ambers in Belgium, is said to have taken the toddlers from their home in the Netherlands without consent before attempting to cross them over to Morocco by ferry. Members of the National Police arrested the man during a vehicle boarding check as he attempted to drive onto the Nador ferry. After asking for identification for the four occupants of the car, they reportedly found the children, aged one and three, who were on a missing person’s list. It was also discovered there was a Dutch international arrest warrant for the man. The children were taken into care in Granada before relatives of the children and an employee from a Dutch children’s home came to collect them.

The alleged crimes came to light on Tuesday morning when a dead cat, showing signs of abuse, was found taped to a flag pole in the middle of the town. Later that day, concerned residents reportedly found a second body, that of a skinned rabbit, alongside a note signed ‘El Imbecil,’ (the imbecile). A GROUP of fishermen in Caleta de Velez port have returned to work despite an ongoing boycott of their catches. The fleet of 16 vessels began fishing again after almost a week off work following a disagreement with wholesalers of bulk discounts. The stand-off, which has seen kilos of fish left unsold, began after the group told wholesalers they would no longer be offering a 5 per cent discount on 10 or more boxes of fish. Buyers responded by refusing to purchase any goods, with even small businesses taking part in the boycott and instead buying fish from sellers in Estepona, Marbella and Fuengirola who have maintained their discounts. This week, wholesalers hardened their bargaining position, now demanding the fishing vessels also pay for the cost of fish containers, a cost which was previously halved between buyers and sellers. Maria del Carmen Navas, president of the Caleta de Velez fishermen association said the group would continue fishing not knowing whether anyone would turn up to buy their catches. Caleta de Velez’s fishing industry is thought to support around 200 local jobs.

Hewn into rock THIS village in Andalucia famous for buildings that are built into the side of a gorge has made it into a British newspaper ’s ranking of beautiful Spanish towns. Setenil de las Bodegas, in Cadiz Province, was chosen along with five others in The Times’ list of the most beautiful towns in Spain. The town sits at around 640 metres above sea level in the Sierra de Cadiz and is built around the Trejo River. Many buildings facing onto the

river have been carved out of a gorge side which now sticks out over the streets below. The Romans founded settlements in the area before the Moors later built up the town. Its natural defences were considered impregnable, but it attracted the attention of Castillan kings who saw it as a gateway to the territory of their Nasrid rivals. Attacks were mounted from 1407 until it was finally captured by the Juan II of Castilla in Sep-

Video vandals POLITICIANS in Rincon de la Victoria said they have installed CCTV cameras at the Casa-Fuerte de Bezmiliana, following several vandalism attacks. The high-definition surveillance cameras at the local tourist attraction are connected to the Local Police office, allowing officers to monitor the site 24 hours a day. The council said the five cameras will protect the Casa-Fuerte de Bezmiliana, which has been declared a Site of Cultural Interest. Antonio Jose Martin, coun-

Help for homeless veterans By Sally Underwood TWO serving members of the British Army will walk the equivalent of four marathons in four days on the Costa del Sol to raise funds for homeless veterans. Charity supporter Craig and his nephew Danny - for security reasons the Euro Weekly News cannot reveal their full names - will carry out the 111-mile challenge from Torrox to the top of the Rock of Gibraltar, leaving on April 17. Craig is no stranger to walking for charity, with 897 miles already under his belt. This time, he and Danny have set their sights on SSAFA Forces Help, raising funds for homeless veterans. Speaking exclusively to the Euro Weekly News, Craig explained: “I have raised money for other charities before, but I am really

Julen site to become tourist attraction THE mayor of Totalan, Miguel Angel, has announced that previous plans to create a tourist attraction in the Sierra de Totalan has been unchanged by the death of two-yearold Julen there in January. Mayor Angel said he had spoken to Juanma Moreno, the president of the Junta de Andalucia, and agreed to also create a memorial to the boy on the site. The politician said the area where the tragedy took place is the site of the Dolmen de Cerro de la Corona, a 6,000-year-old megalithic burial site which was discovered by a group of schoolchildren in the 90’s. Mayor Angel claimed the site, declared an Asset of Cultural Interest (BIC), is located around 200 metres from where Julen fell down a 72-metre borehole on private land. He said the council is yet to find out whether current legal proceedings could affect plans to create a tourist attraction.

Mayor in court OSCAR MEDINA, the mayor of Torrox, has been summoned to court over a complaint by a car park company. The owners of the La Almedina parking lot claimed the council is doing nothing to prevent ‘illegal’ parking around the site despite the company investing more than €7 million in creating the space. La Almedina, which opened in 2008 and created 385 parking spaces, said the council should compensate them for an alleged loss of business. It claimed: “The inaction of the council over parking is not only a contractual issue, but a matter of public order, and a breach on its part of the most basic powers and responsibilities a council has.” Mayor Medina said: “The council complies with the law and this was confirmed by a report by the Local Police.”

Fire forces evacuation A FIRE in the garage of a building in Ve l e z - Ma l a g a fo rce d emergency workers to evacuate around a dozen residents from their homes. The blaze, which broke out at around 2pm on Monday, took place on Calle Domingo Heredia, and saw residents on the upper floors removed for their own safety. Members of the Local Police and Provincial Consortium of firefighters were able to quickly extinguish the flames, which were concentrated on the building’s ground floor. Officials believe a short-circuit in an offroad vehicle parked in one of the street’s garages prompted the fire. Rescue workers said they evacuated residents over concerns t h e f i r e c o u l d q u ic k ly spread as the garage contained flammable liquids. Ultimately, howev e r, n o f u r t h e r d ama g e took place and no one was injured.

Legal limbo A GROUP of around 40 homeowners in El Puente de Don Manuel claimed they are ‘totally desperate,’ after allegedly being without a legal electricity meter for 12 years. The property owners in the Arco Iris building told one publication electric companies refuse to give them a meter because there was no building licence for a transformer installed next to their homes. The group, which paid more than €12,000 for the transformer, said their properties have the necessary licence of first occupation but are being denied a permanent meter. Isidoro Urrestarazu, the president of the community, told Spanish media: “We are desperate, in an absolute judicial limbo, with the fear a disaster will occur and the insurance companies will refuse to cover the damages because we have a provisional electrical connection.” The residents previously staged various protests after Endesa cut off their electricity supply in March 2014. After two years of fighting, they managed to regain their connection on a temporary basis. Mr Urrestarazu said: “We are continually threatened with the risk of being cut off again.”

The project, which also involves the Marcelino Champagnat Foundation, was announced by the town’s mayor, Antonio Moreno Ferrer. In addition to finding employment, the scheme will also raise awareness among the public and employers about hiring those who are at risk of social exclusion. Mayor Ferrer said: “We are handing over use of the community social services building so that staff at the

Marcelino Champagnat Foundation can help with the work requirements of those residents with greater needs, such as young people, those over 45, people with any type of physical or intellectual disability, immigrants, or victims of gender violence, among other groups.” Francisco Garcia, the director of the Caixa bank in Velez-Malaga, said: “[The project] has already been tried out by about nine associations, and last year more than 800 people were able to find quality employment. It does not just help train and assist people in their search for work, but in many cases also helps train and finance people for self-employment.”

Free heating SPAIN’S central government has announced 50,029 families in Axarquia and Malaga Province will receive up to €100 of gas and heating for free. The benefit, which ranges from €25 to €100, will be offered to help with heating, hot water, or cooking costs for some of the area’s most vulnerable households in areas including Comares. The ‘social thermal bond’ will be paid directly by bank transfer to residents during the first few months of the years, subsidising utilities bills by between 25 and 40 per cent for large families, pensioners on the basic pension, and families on a low income. As well as economic factors, Spanish officials will take into account the temperatures in different areas, with high-altitude towns being seen as vulnerable.

Culinary recognition TORROX has been named the Malaga Gastronomic Capital in recognition of its culinary success. The award, which was handed out after the town won the Provincial Council’s Sabor a Malaga (Taste of Malaga) competition. Torrox’s mayor, Oscar Medina, picked up the prize, which includes a €35,000 investment to go towards a local project.

Ocean changes as temperatures rise By Tara Rippin CLIMATE change and fluctuations in water temperature are altering the colour of the oceans. A new study explains that the distribution of Crib-Phytoplanton - or algae - which is not visible to the human eye, affects the colour of the sea. The team of researchers from Massachusetts Institute of Technology claim that now, because of climate change, the distribution of these organisms in the water is changing. The specialists have developed a system that, through images taken by satellites, is able to simulate how the growth, the new distribution and the interaction of the phyto-

SPAIN’S gambling regulator has published the fourth quarter results of 2018. They reveal that Gross Gaming Revenue (GGR) reached €189.5 million, an increase of 4.21 per cent on the same period last year. Sports wagering accounted for 52.74 per cent of the total while casinos represented 34.19 per cent. The remainder came from slot machines, roulette, blackjack and poker.

SPAIN is to conduct one of the biggest clinical trials into a vaccine against HIV - the virus that causes AIDS. This pioneering clinical trial is known as AELIX-003 and will involve 90 participants who have started early antiretroviral therapy after being infected with HIV. Patients will continue to receive antiretroviral therapy at the start of the study and will be closely monitored to ensure their HIV viral loads are kept under detection limits. They will then be vaccinated, with their antiretroviral treatment being suspended to see if the vaccine is effective in keeping their HIV levels under control. The clinical test is to see if the vaccine is as effective in humans as it has been in apes. Although the pace of HIV

New cars THE number of petrol cars registered in Spain rose by 29.7 per cent in 2018 while the amount of diesel cars fell by 20.7 per cent in the same period, according to European Association of Automobile Manufacturers (ACEA).

THE mummified body of a British woman, 71, has been found at a property where the daughter and granddaughter reportedly lived alongside the corpse for up to a year. Guardia Civil discovered the ‘skeletal and mummified’ remains under a mattress, still wearing clothes and surrounded by air fresheners at a house in Istan, close to Marbella. The macabre finding, investigated by the Benemerita Judicial Police

Unit, was made in the early hours of Saturday after a call from the daughter of the deceased. According to reports, she contacted the police after the dead woman’s husband found out and told her and her teenage daughter to go to the police. Officers visited the property and reportedly found the mother’s body hidden under a mattress and cardboard. Initial inspections and a forensic

examination carried out at the Institute of Legal Medicine (IML) in Malaga, found no sign of violence. Investigators believe she may have died of natural causes, although this is still to be confirmed by a postmortem. As well as the cause of death, examiners want to find out exactly when, though it is believed it could have been last March, based on statements by family members.

Animal abuse arrests up THE number of people arrested or charged for animal abuse in Spain in 2018 rose by more than 20 per cent. Seprona, the Guardia Civil’s nature protection service investigated or detained 590 people for animal abuse against both wild and domestic animals. The agency investigated 10,920 offences related to injuries against domestic animals in 2018, and a further 3,974 involving dangerous animals and 1,731 in connection with dangerous dog breeds. The agency also addressed 3,974 complaints regarding owners keeping wild animals as pets, and investigated more than 200 reports of animal exploitation at dog kennels, farms and zoos. The previous year, Seprona dealt with 11,277 reports of animal abuse, and 488 people were arrested or charged. But while the number of people investigated rose slightly, last year compared to 2017, there was a 20 per cent rise in those arrested or charged. In Galicia, the agency is currently investigating the brutal killing of four wild horses, which were led into a deworming corridor and beaten to death.

CHILD PORNOGRAPHY RAIDS: National Police in Spain made eight arrests. POLICE in Spain have arrested eight people aged between 21 and 66, for allegedly exchanging child pornography through the Internet. National Police officers made arrests in Segovia, Sevilla, Guipuzcoa, Madrid, Zaragoza and Malaga, and a large amount of computer material was seized. In Sevilla, a 21-year-old junior boys football team trainer was among those arrested. Police said another man had served time in

prison, and by mistake, sent pornographic files to the people who monitored his restraining order against his former partner. A 25-year-old man was arrested in Madrid who it is claimed shared videos of girls between the ages of 10 and 12 via several instant messaging channels and Internet chats. The investigation began after Spanish police were tipped off by colleagues in the United States and also involved Europol.

FROM our postbag - as our editor Dilip Kuner told The Observer - the British expat population in Spain is pretty evenly split over Brexit. We strive to reflect this in our coverage, but one thing we feel is hugely important is to give advice that will be useful to all expats whatever their views. Having listened to the British Ambassador to Spain, Simon Manley, we decided to be pro-active in making sure our house is in order pre-Brexit. It was all too clear that there were a number of crucial things that we needed to do to make sure we are legal UK citizens living in Spain. In these uncertain times it is easy to become overwhelmed by the legalities and sometimes conflicting information. But it isn’t as difficult as it initially seems. We hope that by sharing our experiences readers too can follow some relatively simple steps to ensure life runs smoothly after Brexit - deal or no deal. To explain, we have renewed our

passports, even though there were months left on them, to eliminate potential problems when travelling overseas post-Brexit (many airlines for example won’t permit you on board if your passport has fewer than six months to run). This can be done easily online at www.gov.uk/renew-adult-passport, simply fill in your details and upload a photograph via your phone or computer. It really is that easy, with the system taking you every step of the way. At each stage of the process text messages keep you informed - even to when the DHL delivery of the passport to your home is due to arrive In addition, our padrons - which are vital for all sorts of paperwork as well as benefiting the local council when it comes to calculating government grants (see next week’s EWN for a fuller explanation) - have been updated at our town hall, where the staff were only too happy to help. Not only that, but we have renewed our Spanish residencias to ensure we

are in possession of the official NIE card. These are issued at the Foreigner Office or National Police station, depending on where you live, and are now a handy credit card size. They are also essential for renewing your Spanish driving licence or swapping your UK one - as we have done well ahead of Brexit. So no matter what the outcome, we know we can continue to drive here and in Europe. You can do this at your nearest Trafico (DGT) office, or if you don’t speak Spanish, a gestor (Spanish administrator) will deal with all of the paperwork for you. We are in the process of updating our

Dia investors’ share offer THREE investors in the Spanish supermarket chain Dia have pooled their shares together as the basis for a syndication deal as a Russian tycoon plots a takeover bid. Pedro and Pablo Gomez-Pablos and Gregoire Bontoux Halley said they were aiming to boost Dia’s capital by 3.25 per cent. They also plan to admit other stockholders to their syndication agreement, according to information submitted to Spain’s CNMV market regulator. It comes as Russian billionaire Mikhail Fridman launched a takeover bid last week.

Renfe plans to compete

Minister budget hopes SPAIN’S Economy Minister has said she hopes lawmakers will back the government’s budget for this year as talks continue to secure parliamentary support. Nadia Calviño said government budget plans were designed to put the Spanish economy on a ‘sustainable’ path of growth. It comes as opposition politicians and companies have cast doubt on plans which include raising the minimum wage to €900. Calviño said concerns over the effects of measures in the budget were ‘exaggerated.’ “We hope that in the end our plans

the minister added. It comes as Pablo Casado, the leader of the conservative Partido Popular (PP) opposition, said rises in the minimum wage could destroy jobs for young people. He has proposed raising it gradually to €850 by 2020. It also follows analysis from the BBVA bank which claimed the rise in the minimum wage would cut the total number of Spanish jobs by 60,000 this year. The bank has still forecast unemployment will fall to 13.8 per cent in 2019. Calviño said the hike was designed to ensure workers enjoyed decent wages and dignified, quality jobs.

STATE-OWNED rail company Renfe has said a new app and website improvements are part of its plans to improve services as it prepares for competition from next year. Manel Villalante, the firm’s Strategy and Development Director, said the planned app for passengers was designed to stave off rivals. The company wanted to avoid the fate of traditional taxis after the arrival of Uber, Villalante added. Renfe has also tendered a deal worth €750,000 to redesign its website under its 2019 to 2023 Strategic Plan.

SHOCKS: The ECB will test banks this month. THE European Central Bank (ECB) has said it will test around 100 eurozone banks this month to see if they can handle mass withdrawals. The liquidity stress tests are set to see the banks subjected to various shocks to see how long they can cope with money being withdrawn from deposits. They come after Spanish bank Popular was brought down by mass withdrawals in 2017,

leading to Santander buying it out. The ECB tests are made up of three different scenarios. There is the baseline scenario of stable output flows, the adverse shock scenario where liquidity is limited and the extreme shock scenario where wholesale activity is frozen. The tests will not assess systemic economic shocks, but ones which affect banks individually.

Computers and electronic goods rose by 8 per cent while 6.3 per cent more transport materials

were produced. Extractive industry goods fell by 5.3 per cent and clothing output decreased by 4.3 per cent. The regions with the highest output increases were Cantabria with 6.6 per cent, Galicia with 4.9 and Asturias, 2.2. The largest declines took place in La Rioja with 5.6 per cent, the Balearic Islands with 3.9 and Andalucia, 2.9.

The changing face of London

LEAPY LEE SAYS IT OTHERS THINK IT MANY moons ago, when I began writing for this wholly unique, free thinking publication, I often wrote of the impending national disaster should the UK continue to allow immigration, particularly from countries outside of Europe, to continue unabated and virtually unchecked. This resulted in the emergence of the phrase ‘Another Leapy Rant,’ which became one of the most oft uttered observations in a whole multitude of derisory mail that subsequently found its way into the EWN postbag. Although many agreed with my sentiments, laughter and derision was, at that time, very much the order of the day. Well, in the words of Farage’s post referendum address to the EU parliament. They’re not laughing now are they? I’ve just returned from a month in the UK and I can quite categorically state that the face of Great Britain as we knew it has changed - forever. Sure, the country areas are, for the time being, reminiscent of our great culture and heritage, but in the cities, particularly parts of London, British values are virtually non-existent. Don’t take my word for it.These are a few observations from an article recently published in one of the nationals. They came from a lady journalist (Source: Jane Kelly, The Daily Telegraph) who has, for 17 years lived in Acton Vale, London, one of the areas virtually taken over by the

She writes: ‘So many Muslims in the area insist on their separateness - there are not even any attempts to integrate into British society.’ She goes on to say that her neighbours ‘flap by’ in full niqab, so heavily veiled she can’t see their eyes. When she smiles and tries to communicate, they won’t even look her in the eye. Apparently, most of the shops have been taken over by Muslims and even her fish and chip shop has become Halal. A nearby shop, which advertis-

es ‘no alcohol,’ added that alcohol is also banned in streets near the shop! In the past ‘normally clad’ Western girls, were reportedly admonished for ‘exposing themselves’ near a mosque. The members of these ‘patrols’ have also been heard shouting ‘this is a Muslim area’ at other white Britons. Openly gay men have been attacked on the streets. The list simply goes on and on. TECH FOR THE TIMID I WENT to the newsagents the other day to see if they still stocked Newsweek. The shop’s there, but the magazine isn’t. And never will be, despite still selling thousands; it’s digital-only these days. Who would have thought it, but after peaking four years ago, e-books have steadily been giving back ground to their traditional counterparts. Their share drops slightly each year, from making up 20 per cent of all book sales at their peak in 2015. Let’s look at the technology of The Book as it fights its way back. The Book is innovative to an extreme in this chips-with-everything era. No wires, no electric circuits, no batteries, nothing to be connected or switched on. It’s so easy to use, even a child can operate it. Compact and portable, it can be used anywhere. The Book is constructed of se-

The pages are locked together with a custom-fit device called a binder which keeps the sheets in their correct sequence. The Book may be taken up at any time and used merely by opening it. You can also make personal notes next to Book text entries with an optional programming tool, the Portable Erasable Nib Cryptic Intercommunication Language Stylus (PENCILS). So far, so attractive. But like LPs versus MP3s, at least for now, the traditional and the electronic book both seem here to stay. I love fondling a musty book and even getting my nose right into it, but even US Customs might have trouble separating me from my cherished Kindle. A couple of clicks on any of its hundreds, nay thousands, of titles, and the world’s great literature is mine. So from magazines to music, like so many of today’s ‘media consumers,’ my compromise is to stay traditional for the tactile look and feel, but go digital for convenience. One thing’s for certain; never again will I set out on holiday lugging that ridiculous rucksack, groaning under the latest bonkbusters.

Paper vs pixels AS a child I remember dear old grandpops berating my parents when they bought me a book for Christmas: ‘The lad’s already got a book!’ Now I’ve got thousands of the things. E-readers were invented two decades ago, but it took 2007’s first Kindle to revolutionise the market. E-books are read on an ubiquity of devices, but dedicated e-readers continue their steady sales, with one estimate saying that Amazon alone has now sold around 100 million Kindles (other brands are available), while flogging half a billion e-books a year. E-readers weigh less than a paperback, start at less than €100, hold several thousand books, run for a month on charge, and some are even waterproof. Pity they don’t look great in a bookcase.

BIT of a whinge this week. First off, as if on cue, the same old headlines in the UK press recently: ‘Big freeze brings travel chaos!’ Yes, people are delayed, some airports and schools closed, but hey, it’s winter! Shock horror! As I watched TV, with news reports of trapped motorists, I wondered why they didn’t seem to pay attention to the many warnings. Is it a lack of trust in the Met Office? An ‘It won’t happen to me’ fantasy, or just plain stupidity? Why can’t the UK have an emergency stash of snow ploughs and gritters which can be mobilised when winter hits, instead of this annual pathetic chaos? Stick the vehicles in the areas where snow’s expected, and set them to work. Don’t wait until the roads are blocked. Other countries manage perfectly well in bad winter weather without this incompetent, inexplicable lack of action by government and local authorities. Speaking of which, my next whinge concerns some local authorities using taxpayer cash to pay consultants to ‘analyse a clown festival,’ ‘devise a pantomime strategy,’ and ‘decide how many golf courses a town needs.’ Council spending on consultants increased to nearly £400 million last year, despite a gov-

LEGALLY SPEAKING Can he still exchange licences? I hold a residence certificate as an EU citizen in Spain and I have a UK driver’s licence, valid until my 70th birthday. Because of Brexit, I have to exchange my UK licence for a Spanish licence. After the exchange, do the Spanish authorities return the UK licence? Obtaining the appointment to exchange it may take five to six months. Will this delay complicate matters due to being after the Brexit date, or because I started the procedure before the Brexit date, will that make the exchange simpler, meaning I will not need to take a Spanish driver’s test? You know who you are! Mike Senker In my opinion Views of a Grumpy Old Man I’VE lived here for about 15 years, and mostly I love it for the following reasons: There is no political correctness, which is great. You can greet someone, kiss them on each cheek, and if it’s a female, say ‘hola guapa’ and they say thank you. Of course, the climate is glorious. I mean, this winter has been amazing. You can call the wife ‘heifer’ (cow) without getting a slap because jefa means ‘the boss’ here. There are not lots of words the same; I mean the spelling police are on my case permanently because is it two, to or too? Would or wood, through or threw, bear or bare, ate or eight. Your or you’re; that’s the worst one, or is it won? But of course there are some things here which are really infuriating. Top of that list is the ‘shrug.’ You know the one, when you complain about something and you are 100 per cent in order, and the person you are talking to just looks at you and does that weird facial expression and gives the shrug. There is absolutely nothing you can say

or do to get any further reaction. Red tape, forms, the different hurdles you have to jump over and hoops you have to go through to get the simplest things done. Motor scooters and their selfish, dangerous idiotic drivers are the bane of every car driver on the road, and of course the zebra crossings which are so ‘conveniently’ placed on the exits to roundabouts. Cyclists are up there with their annoying abuse of the roads and their total belief that no part of any highway code in any country applies to them, therefore allowing them to ignore every traffic light, every crossing and every one-way system, and to ride two or three abreast, whilst having a chat. Plus of course, not having any insurance or making any contribution to the highways they abuse. The legal system is a nightmare; again, everything takes forever. I have a friend who is owed a considerable amount of money for work done, and this geezer won’t pay; trying to collect it is a nightmare even though there is supposed to be a type of small-claims court procedure, it still takes forever and by the time it’s all put into place most of them have disappeared without trace. vvSURPRISE, surprise! The Public Prosecution Department smells a rat in the Ministry of the Interior’s plot to rob notes - ie evidence - accumulated by Luis Barcenas, former Partido Popular treasurer. For those recently arrived from Outer Space, this occurred because Luis Barcenas was dishing the dirt on the PP’s dodgy funding and other fiscal sins. Judges handed out verdicts and sentences at the end of the Gurtel confidence at the end of last May, which put Pedro Sanchez in the Moncloa and the PSOE in government. In 2013 this likelihood prompted the Ministry of the Interior to launch Operation Kitchen, protecting the party’s interests, not the state’s. The Ministry spent €600,000 of public money, some of which was used to bribe Barcenas’ chauffeur to spy on him. Inevitably, the now-retired police chief Jose Manuel Villarejo also played a starring role in the conspiracy, as his presence appears to be a given in these cases. As it’s also a given that the Public Prosecution department took years to come up with a conclusion which occurred to the rest of us long before.

Delayed reaction Back to the jackboot THE Supreme Court, which is prosecuting members of the regional government who declared Cataluña an independent republic on October 27, 2017, has preferred not to accept international observers. Not the best of moves. No-one questions Spain’s democratic credentials, at least no-one living here, but this decision makes it less easy to erase the international image of poor downtrodden Cataluña crushed under Fran-

co’s cast-off jackboots. Allowing, as their lordships have, live coverage of the sessions is less convincing than they imagine. For a world fed a diet of reality television it will be so mind-numbingly boring that commentators will revert to the jackboot theory anyway.

Neutral tones A LEADING seaman in the Spanish Navy received 30 days in the glasshouse for signing an

anti-Franco manifesto. This responded to an earlier manifesto by 144 high-ranking officers, many of them retired, defending Francisco Franco and justifying the military uprising against the Republican government in July 1936. Another group made a public declaration the one which landed the seaman in hot water which supported the sovereignty of the Spanish people. The disciplinary proceedings against him claimed criticising the dead dictator ‘undermined the Armed Forces’ neutrality.’

British colony status GIBRALTAR voted almost unanimously to remain inside the European Union, so is not particularly happy with the prospect of a hard Brexit. Spain has been breathing down their necks for centuries, and now, adding insult to injury, Brussels has announced that if Britain says adieu, farewell and goodbye without a deal, Gibraltar will have the status of a British colony. Spain has succeeded in manoeuvring Brussels into using this term in a document prepared for the increasingly likely eventuality of a no-deal Brexit. Nothing is guaranteed to make Brexiteers froth at the mouth like accusing them of having little idea of what they were really voting for, but how many were prepared for this one?

ITV reveals Victoria series three premiere Richard Shanley UK viewers won’t have to wait too much longer to see Victoria’s third series, thankfully. F o r t h e f i r s t t i m e e v e r, t h e r e g a l d r a m a i s c u r r e n t l y a i ring in the US as part of P B S ’s M a s t e r p i e c e p r o g r a m ming block before it even has a UK premiere date, which has ticked off fans here at home.

Barry Duke HARD to believe, I know, but recently I got involved in a lively conversation in my favourite whisky den in which the dreaded word Brexit wasn’t mentioned at all. It was all about names. When I introduced myself to a couple of Brits enjoying a winter’s break in Benidorm, they insisted that ‘noone these days calls their son Barry, so I’m guessing you were born somewhere around the mid 1 9 6 0 ’s . ’ I t o o k t h i s a s c o m p l i ment, because I’d just hit the 72 mark. Our chat got me wondering whether any research had been done relating birth dates to names. Sure enough, there has. An online report, based on findings from America’s Social Security administration makes for fascinating reading. Published five years ago, it revealed for example, anyone in the US named Mildred would, in 2014, have been 78 years old, while Gertrudes, were on average, aged 80.

ITV was at first hesitant to update viewers on when it would be bringing them the new episodes, but does now have a firm timeline of when Her Royal Highness Jenna Coleman will be back on screens. Giving children silly names

father, Lear jet founder Bill Lear, in the 1940’s. In 1967, musician Frank Zappa named his daughter Moon Unit, and she in turn gave her daughter the name Mathilda Plum Doucette. I n t h e 1 9 7 0 ’s , o n e c h i l d w a s named Marijuana Pepsi, and in 1983 singer Bob Geldof and TV star Paula Yates named their first child Fifi Trixibelle, a name more suited to a miniature French poodle. For some strange reason - lack of inspiration perhaps - 300 American children in the 1990’s were named ABCDE. In a 2015 poll of strange celebrity names, Pilot Inspektor, son of American actor Jason Lee, topped the list. He was born in 2003, and his dad said the name was inspired by a song by the b a n d G r a n d a d d y c a l l e d ‘ H e ’s Simple, He’s Dumb, He’s the Pilot,’ which pretty well describes the Great Trumpkin. There’s a very useful resource on the Internet which relates people’s names to their birth dates. When I entered Barry it showed it reached the height of popularity in1960. It’s a great time to come to the Canaries. I don’t often listen to recorded classical music, but watching it being played is very enjoyable. Last night we watched an extraordinarily good, charismatic performance from the Orquesta Barroca de Tenerife, right here in Valle Gran Rey, La Gomera. One of the great aspects of the festival is this attempt to include smaller islands. This year’s programme includes performances on La Gomera, El Hierro, Fuerteventura, Lanzarote and La Palma as well as Tenerife and Gran Canaria, involving more expenditure. Likewise, if any of us small island dwellers venture off to the big islands in search of culture, medical help, shopping, public administration headaches or just a change of scene, we must move fast to get it done and get back in time. This is difficult; culture shock leaves some of us stunned and slow moving on encountering the Real World. Drivers blast their horns at any

nanosecond of hesitation, whereas on small islands we routinely stop in the middle of the road for a chat. It’s very bad form indeed to express impatience, whereas impatience seems fundamental on big islands. I cross Tenerife on small roads that wind up through pine forest to the spectacular Teide National Park and then meander down to capital Santa Cruz. This is an incredibly scenic route taking nearly three times as long as the autopista connecting southern shag and vomit tourist zones to the delightful north.

It drives my daughters, avid shoppers both, mad, most others too. The inconvenience of having to immediately turn round and set off back in time to get the last ferry home does give pause for thought. But it’s a great drive. No amount of driving fast would make it feasible to go to an evening event and get back to your island that night. You have to stay over. It gets pricey. But spare a thought for the elderly and infirm, whose morning medical appointments in Tenerife involve

them leaving home at 3.30am from El Hierro, from La Palma a little earlier and from La Gomera 5.30am. Just what you need when you’re feeling unwell. There are some inter island planes too, and with our newish 75 per cent resident discount they’re in great demand, as is recreational travel between islands. Should the dreaded Brexit event ever sort itself, Brits here will likely lose the discount. Could anyone with even a vague idea of the Brexit outcome, please contact me?

THERE are some tree-mendous trunks and terrific tree roots, found all over Spain. I recently found some really scary trees in Palma City centre, Mallorca. Can you spot the ghoulish face? Look at its eyes and mouth. Who yer gonna trunk call - ghost busters! Branching out to the Costa del Sol, I found another monster tree root in Paloma Park, Benalmadena. There’s creatures great and small in the park, but look closely and you will see there’s a crocodile under that tree. The ‘creature’ is massive - look at the size of its head, legs and tail. With Spain coming second only to Sweden for the largest amount of forests in Europe, there must be dozens of weird and wonderful trees in your neck of the woods. Rapid turnover I HAVE been enjoying the new series of Bargain Loving Brits. However, after doing a bit of Googling and Facebooking following the first episode, it appears that one couple who took on a bar have already called it a day. The bar has been redecorated in red - they painted it blue - and from Facebook threads, appears to have changed hands around October. NEWS that Spain intends to work more closely with France and Germany on EU issues following Brexit is welcome if the country does not forgo its ties with Britain. Discussions between officials from Spain, France and Germany have so far focused on bringing Spain into the fold of leading EU member states. It comes as Irene Lozano, Secretary of State for Global Spain, said the country should strive to occupy the void left by Britain in the EU following Brexit. The official added that Spain and Britain must continue to work hand in hand over Europe and internationally. If Lozano’s comments are indicative of Spain’s policy towards Britain going forward then it is encouraging. Spain and Britain share many reasons for co-operation, including large communities of expatriates living in each other’s countries. Recent bilateral agreements on voting rights and other issues post-Brexit have shown officials in London and Madrid are keen to continue working closely together. Even the longrunning dispute over Gibraltar has so far failed to derail their efforts. If Britain and Spain continue to develop such ties then Madrid’s desire to make its presence felt in the EU should also be welcome. Spain, which would be the fourth-largest economy in the bloc following Britain’s departure, would be ideally placed to act as its third power alongside France and Germany. It could also prove a valuable ally for Britain in the EU after Brexit.

Staff plan SPAIN’S government has approved a decree that would see 1,735 state workers hired to cope with the effects of Brexit in the civil service, at borders and for expatriates. The government is set to take on 875 extra civil servants across various government departments, 860 at ports and airports. The workers are also set to help the roughly 300,000 British expatriates living in Spain, according to plans approved at a Council of Ministers meeting on Friday. Ministers said Spain had the means to cope with the aftermath of Brexit but that certain departments needed extra resources. It comes as the Spanish government, the British embassy and Spain’s Directorate General of Traffic (DGT) continue to call on expatriates to ensure their paperwork is in order before Brexit. Separately, a human resources organisation has said companies employing British staff members should ensure they can prove their workers are legally residing in the country ahead of post-Brexit labour inspections. The Human Resources observatory said the Spanish government would likely adopt measures covering British workers in the EU Withdrawal Agreement even if it does not receive parliamentary backing.

Big screen favourites together again TWO of Spain’s hottest movie stars, Antonio Banderas and Penelope Cruz, are reuniting to take lead roles in Sony Pictures’ upcoming film, Dolor y Gloria (Pain and Glory). The movie is directed by Pedro Almodovar, who took the reins of the last film the pair starred in together, I’m so Excited, in 2013. A trailer - more a collection of unconnected scenes - kicks off with a shot of 58-year-old Banderas’ character, film director ‘in decline’ Salvador Mallo, sitting at the bottom of a pool.

When I first met Michele I invited her to dinner at my house - it was our first date. I was able to show off my culinary skills, she fell for it hook, line and sinker and came back for dessert the week after! I married her a year or so later and so what that tells me is simple. Cook a romantic meal with love, passion and a bit of style

and you will definitely score! The great thing about the Wellington is that most of us enjoy a good piece of beef (if not you could do a vegetable Wellington the same way) baked in pastry, it’s a great sharing dish. Make it for two and then carve it through the centre at the table, serve the sauce on the side, the vegetables in the middle of the table and you have a perfect sharing dinner. As for dessert… It needs to be simple. What I don’t want is that you are stressed in the kitchen having to spend too much time on the food and not at the table with your partner. For dessert I serve a fondue of fresh fruits and toasted marshmallows on long wooden skewers. Easy to make and you can dip the fruits into white and dark melted chocolates as you eat them, feed each other and have fun with the concept. So whatever you are doing this Valentine’s do it in style and cook something lovely one of the evenings this week.

Driving licences in Spain LIVING in Spain can bring with it an array of issues which may not have been encountered when living in the UK. There are lots of things to consider, and we are here to help try to make the transition and life in Spain a little easier by compiling a series of helpful facts and figures relating to a variety of topics.

If you are planning on living in Spain on a permanent basis, it’s a good idea to have a Spanish driving licence - in fact it is mandatory after a while. Here are some guidelines for current and new drivers on how to do this quickly and easily. If you already have a valid EU (European Union) Community or an EEA (European Economic Area) driving licence and meet the minimum driving age in Spain, you can use it for the first two years of residence in Spain, although you must register your details with the traffic authorities after six months. You can register at your Central Register of Drivers and Minor Offenders of the Provincial Traffic Headquarters. If you don’t obtain a Spanish driver’s licence after two years of residence in Spain and are caught driving, you can face a fine of around €200. Visit: www.dgt.es to find out more. Once the process is under way, you will have to adhere to the same conditions as Spanish licence holders: Have reached minimum age in Spain for the specific category of vehicle you want to drive, Relevant medical checks, Renew or exchange the licence after the first two years’ residence in Spain. If an EU licence is renewed in Spain it effectively converts it into a Spanish EU licence, which then needs to be renewed every 10 years up to the age of 65, and every five years after 65. The new regulation which requires new residents to exchange their licences for a Spanish one, was enforced three years ago. As such, Spain has agreements with more than 20 countries, allowing drivers to exchange a foreign driver’s licence for its equivalent. To find out more, check with your home country’s consulate in Spain or the Spanish Traffic Authority at www.sede.dgt.gob.es. To exchange your licence, you will need to fill out an application form that is issued by the Provincial Traffic Headquarters. (See the above website). The following documents will be required: Proof of identity (original passport and a copy), Proof of your residence for six months (Certificate of Registration in the Central Aliens Register - the NIE number), Application form (in Spanish), Current valid driving licence to be exchanged (original and a copy), Written declaration stating that you don’t have another driving licence of the same class in another country, Written declaration stating that you have not been suspended or banned, Two recent passport size photographs (32 by 25 mm), Medical fitness report (visit the DGT website for information). For new drivers, check the legal driving ages and permit types before you register. You can get details depending on what type of vehicle you want to drive by visiting: Englishdriving-school.com. The best option (for new drivers) is to go to a driving school as they take care of the registration process with the Jefatura (Jefatura Provincial de Trafico) on your behalf. Once you have registered, get your medical and vision test done, too. Theory tests can be done in a classroom or be computer based. To me, the Oscars, the Grammys and the Brits are just evenings where a bunch of actors, singers and musicians get to tell each other how great they are. However, sometimes a worthwhile m o m e n t emerges which is worth mentioning. At Sunday night’s Gram-

However, it was the controversial This Is America by Childish Gambino (actor Donald Glover) which won Best Song and Best Record. The video for the song is so powerful and disturbing, with its highlighting of American gun violence

that I’m not sure it could be classed as entertainment. However, it’s a very important piece of social commentary. This Is America is not the first record dealing with gun violence. The Boomtown Rats’ massive hit I Don’t Like Mondays and Pearl Jam’s Jeremy were both songs about school shootings. Sometimes music is, and should be, about pure entertainment. But we also need music which can deliver a powerful message. Childish Gambino didn’t turn up to collect his Grammys.
