Hair-raising cliff rescue FIVE climbers were trapped on a cliff edge in Sa Gubia, Bunyola, for 11 hours before being brought to safety during a ‘lengthy and complex’ overnight rescue operation. The group had reportedly been practising abseiling, but found themselves stuck and unable to descend at 7pm on Tuesday evening. Mallorca Fire Service confirmed the rescue was extremely difficult ‘due to the night time conditions and access to the site.’ One of the added problems was that the Guardia Civil helicopter could not fly over the area because of poor visibility, and locating the rescuees had to be done on foot. With the help of Inca and Soller parks mountain rescue teams, the climbers were
brought to safety at dawn yesterday morning after a fivehour operation. Despite having been stranded overnight, they are all said to be ‘in good health.’ Last week, Mallorca firefighters rescued a couple who were trapped in the rising torrent of Pareis, in Escorca, having spent the night waiting for help.

Body in plane wreckage AIR investigators have confirmed there is a body inside the wreckage of the plane found during the search for ex-Palma de Soledad youth squad footballer, Emiliano Sala. The Air Accidents Investigation Branch (AAIB) launched an investigation after the aircraft was lost at sea on January 21, while travelling over the English Channel from Nantes, France, to Cardiff. Sala, 28, had been signed by Cardiff City for a club record of €17 million. The light aircraft was being piloted by David Ibbotson,
59, who is also missing. On Sunday, a privately funded search team working closely with the AAIB, found wreckage of the plane on the seabed, which experts confirmed was the missing Piper Malibu. In a statement, the AAIB said: “Tragically, in video footage from the remotely operated vehicle (ROV), one occupant is visible amidst the wreckage.” The air investigator’s intention now is to recover the body inside and if feasible, the aircraft wreckage.

Rapist planned to be children’s holiday rep A MAN who was jailed for raping a young girl was reportedly planning to work as a childrens’ entertainer in Mallorca. According to British press, Durham Crown Court heard that James Milburn, 19, did a stint working on the island, and on his return to England said he planned to return to work as a children’s holiday rep. But, during this time, the mother of his victim reported the rape to the police. Shaun Dodds, prosecuting, reportedly said Milburn flew from Leeds Bradford Airport to Palma, on discovering he was being investigated, But family members urged him to return and he was arrested by police

Collapsed road EMERGENCY repairs to the CaimariLluc road in Escorca, which collapsed during Storm Helena’s heavy rains last week, will take at least a month. Mallorca Council is evaluating the damage and an alternative for light vehicles will be created. Mayor of Escorca, Toni Solivellas, raised the alarm last Friday as he was driving from Inca to Lluc and realised a section of road had disappeared. The Challenge Ciclista Mallorca cycle trophies had to be rerouted from Pollensa to Lluc as a result.
Dead birds probe JAILED RAPIST: James Milburn, 19, said he planned to go to Spain to work as a children’s holiday rep. at the airport when he landed. Milburn apparently made no comment to police questions, but after the case was sent to the crown court, he admitted a charge of rape.
Liam O’Brien, defending, told the court there was nothing he could say to ‘diminish the pain and suffering of the victim in this case and that of her family.’ He said Milburn ‘was
old enough to know right from wrong.’ Judge Jonathan Carroll imposed a six-year and nine-month custodial sentence and made Milburn subject to registration as a sex offender for life.
MORE than 130 starlings have been found dead close to Mallorca’s cathedral prompting an investigation. While animal protection experts believe the main cause of death could be ‘an infectious disease,’ samples have been sent to the Ministry of Environment, Agriculture and Fisheries for analysis. Two years ago, around 250 starlings were found dead next to the same cathedral. Researchers concluded the birds were poisoned. Months later, there was another incident.

THE Ministry of Health detected 485 cases of gonorrhea in 2017, up 66 per cent on 2016, and 207 cases of syphilis, a 17.8 per cent rise. The Epidemiological Surveillance Network of the Balearic Islands stressed these two diseases ‘show considerable increases in incidence.’

Sheep attacked by dogs AN Inca farmer has lost 14 sheep in four separate dog attacks over the last two weeks, with others having to be put down due to their injuries. Environment and Rural Affairs councillor, Angel Garcia, has expressed the town hall’s concern and said it was working on a by-law that will oblige dogs to be chipped, and confirmed there are two police officers specialised in this field. The problem, Garcia added, is that many owners leave dogs at properties they don’t actually live in.

According to the regional environment and agriculture ministry, town halls are responsible for dealing with attacks and have the support of the government’s protection of species agency, Cofib, to register incidents and take action against owners. But vice president of the College of Veterinarians, Tolo Palou, stressed dog owners and their dogs share responsibility. He believes the environment ministry must accept greater liability for the sheep so farmers are not left totally helpless.

Street performers UNOFFICIAL street acts will become a thing of the past in parts of Palma after the council approved proposals to ban unauthorised artists and musicians from the city centre. At the moment, artistic activities are prohibited in so-called Acoustically Contaminated Zones (ZAC), like sa Calatrava, sa Llonja, Santa Catalina and Canamut, but it will be extended to all of the neighbourhoods in the centre.

The new measures, expected to be given the government goahead next month, will extend the ban to Seu, Palau Reial and Plaza de Cort areas. Under the new rules, performers must have a card issued by the city council annually, and will only be allowed to operate in spaces allocated by the authority, depending on the area and the type of activity they perform. The aim is to be able to regulate noise and ‘nuisance’ levels.

Sex drug probe A BRITISH man from Palmanova has been arrested and 30 people are being investigated in connection with the sale of drugs to increase sexual potency in Calvia. The Guardia Civil launched an inquiry after learning the prohibited drugs - a substitute for Viagra called Boner Gold and Maxx Blue - were being dispensed in vending machines in toilets at a number of establishments. Several inspections were carried out and 1,000 doses were recovered together with €1,000. Further investigations led officers to the British man, believed to be behind the operation. On searching a warehouse in his name, 15 machines, 1,500 doses of the drug and €2,000 was reportedly seized.
Port lookout A NEW viewpoint is to be created at the port of Cala Figuera, one of the most emblematic places in Santanyi, at a cost of €140,000. Such is the popularity of the mouth of the post, that the city council has approved an official lookout at the junction of Calle Juan Sebastian and Calle Hernan Cortes. Parking lot arrest A SUSPECTED dealer who allegedly sold cocaine in broad daylight in the car park of a supermarket in Manacor, has been arrested. National Police officers reportedly seized 25 grams of the drug, tog eth er w ith € 8 4 0 a nd a mobile phone when they detained the 19year-old. According to police sources, the offender was caught ‘with his car window down’ carrying out what appeared to be a ‘sale.’ A plainclothed officer apparently w itn e s s e d th e ‘tran sa c tion’ a nd called for reinforcements. DEATH to cancer data for the Balearic Islands show one in five women and one in every three men develop the disease before the age of 75. The Ministry of Health has revealed 2,306 people lost their lives to cancer last year, 1,380 males and 926 females. Among women the most prevalent form is breast cancer, followed by trachea, bronchus, lung, colon and rectum. In the case of men, cancer of the trachea is most common, followed by bronchus, lung, colon, rectum and prostate.
Paramedic pressures AMBULANCE technicians are calling for more staff to meet the ‘real demands’ on the healthcare service after 9pm. The health trade union, Usae, claims the pressures are greater during the evening and overnight. They also want ambulances to be equipped with two blue lights.

Visionary initiative A RENEWED commitment to support the work of Calvia Lions Club has been made by Specsavers Opticas in Santa Ponsa. The two have been collaborating in a scheme to collect used glasses since 2012, due to a shared commitment to end avoidable blindness and improve eye health in developing countries. The company collects around 1,000 pairs of glasses each year and wants to boost this number through improved awareness. Customers donate old glasses which are picked up by Lions Club volunteers, then sent to the Melvin Jones glasses recycling centre near Alicante. There they are cleaned, repaired and sorted into
different prescriptions. Around 100,000 pairs are sent to over 30 countries each year, predominantly in Latin America, Africa and Asia. “We take it for granted we can correct our vision with glasses if our sight is bad,” said Martin Blake from Specsavers Opticas, “but in many parts of the world people don’t have that luxury and poor eyesight can make life very difficult for vulnerable people. Holiday fatality A TO U R I S T d i e d i n S o n Espases Hospital after being run over by her own hire car in Andratx on Sunday. The 70-year-old French woman and her husband, who were staying at a hotel in Illetes, were driving to Cala Llamp, when they parked up in a pine wood so that the deceased could get out to go to the toilet. For reasons yet unknown, the car began rolling backwards ‘uncontrollably’ and the woman was knocked
down and dragged several metres.Her husband was still inside, but was unable to stop the vehicle before it came to a standstill after colliding with a tree. Police, ambulance crews and firefighters attended and managed to lift the car, releasing the victim. She was admitted to the h o s p i t a l ’s i n t e n s i v e c a r e unit, but died from her ‘very serious’ injuries the same day. The Local Police of Andratx is investigating the circumstances.
Cruise app THE Port Authority of the Balearic Islands (APB) and the city council have developed an app called Welcome Palma which will inform cruise passengers about the least congested places, and offer a guide of places of interest to visit.
Cancer awareness A BANNER to mark Monday’s World Day Against Cancer has been hung on the balcony of Palma Town Hall. School dropout rates fall THE number of young Spanish people abandoning their studies has fallen to 17.9 per cent; the lowest in a decade. The figure is still shy of the Europeanw i d e 2 0 2 0 t a rg e t o f 15 per cent, however, leaving Spain with the third highest levels of education dropouts in Europe after Malta and Romania. The rates are 14 per cent lower than in 2008, although experts warn the number of men dropping out of studies between the ages of 18 and 24 was still high, at around 21 per cent.

Julen’s father speaks out By Sally Underwood JOSE ROSELLO, the father of two-year-old Julen who died after falling down a 72-metre borehole, has thanked the rescue workers who tried to save his son. Rosello said he and Julen’s mother, Victoria, are coping by staying with friends who are supporting them through their grief. Jose said: “I close my eyes and I see the same thing; the well.” He added friends have been encouraging him to play Playstation games to distract him. Jose added: “I curse myself… I curse that day.” The father, who lost his only other son, Oliver, in 2017 to a sudden heart attack, said: “We used to live with my family, but when Oliver died we had to go, because everything was a memory.” Mr Rosello told Spanish media his family had been reading messages of support from around the world: “We have felt very supported. Even if the pain does not leave me, I will be eternally grateful for that.”

A Harrier jet from the Ninth Navy Flotilla Squadron will take part in the air festival in Gloucestershire, UK, between July 19 and 21. The Cabrera park, south of Mallorca, covers an area of 90,794 hectares, having started as a joint land and sea protected area in 1991. It enjoys the maximum

Smoker loses children A COURT in Cordoba has awarded primary custody of two children to their mother after finding their father was a ‘pathological smoker.’ A judge found: “It would not be logical that children are not protected in their home - a place society deems ‘protected’for any citizen, young or old - when we have rules around public places, schools, work centres or health centres.” The children, 10 and 13, told the court they were concerned about smoke levels at home, accusing the father of smoking in their bedroom.

NEW FINDINGS: The prints were found at Altamira (file photo). ARCHAEOLOGISTS have discovered three new hand prints among prehistoric artwork in a Cantabria cave. Researchers said the prints, at the Altamira cave, were “almost certainly” made more than 20,000 years ago. The discovery was announced by Altamira Museum director Pilar Fatas and the head of the Handpas cataloguing project Carmen de las Heras. De las Heras said the find was “exceptional” as very few prints of hands of the size of those found at Altamira have been discovered. Researchers believe the
hands that made the prints could have belonged to children. “The cave continues to produce relevant findings that never cease to amaze us 32 years after the last publication on art in Altamira,” De las Heras said. The prints have been photographed and digitally catalogued with Handpas’ 3D Paleolithic hands in Europe collection. The Altamira cave is famous for the Palaeolithic paintings of animals that adorn its walls. Modesto Cubillas discovered the location in 1868 and it was later named a UNESCO World Heritage site.
POLICE unions have stood by a Guardia Civil officer suspended for recording Catalan independence prisoners being transferred to jail in Madrid. The officer was accused of failing to comply with the Guardia Civil’s constitution after posting the video online. The union said he was left ‘defenceless.’
Cancer deaths THE cancer mortality rate has dropped by 18 per cent worldwide since 1990, it has emerged. Scientists at the Society of Medical Oncology predict 277,234 cases of cancer will be diagnosed in Spain this year, but many will be survivable. Jose Marcilla, General Director of Novartis Oncology Spain, said: “Fortunately today we are facing a new era in the approach to cancer, marked by increased survival.”

EU expat help BRITISH expatriate campaign groups have praised Members of the European Parliament (MEPs) after they called on senior EU officials to offer guarantees that current rights would be protected. Members of the New Europeans campaign group said EU officials including European Council (EC) president Donald Tusk were responsible for what happened to British people in the bloc after Brexit. It comes as the European Parliament’s Civil Liberties, Justice and Home Affairs Committee is due to begin debating offering guarantees to the 1.5 million British nationals living in the EU. Roger Casale, of New Europeans, said the issue was a test of EU values. His group is campaigning for a new visa to protect British expatriates’ rights and those of EU citizens in Britain. His comments follow 25 British MEPs writing a letter to Tusk and European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker calling for guarantees. Clauide Moraes, a Labour MEP who signed the letter, said ‘fundamental rights’ were at stake. “This is a moral issue,” Moraes said. A British government spokesperson called on the EU to offer guarantees as Britain has done for EU citizens there.

Facing deadlock By Joe Gerrard BRITAIN’S prime minister has vowed to ‘battle for Britain’ when she returns to Brussels to secure amendments to her Brexit deal which EU officials rallied around this week. Theresa May wrote in The Telegraph that she would be armed with a fresh mandate to secure changes to the Withdrawal Agreement. It comes as EU officials and member states again said the current deal remains the best and only option for an orderly withdrawal on Friday, March 29. The opening salvos in May’s ‘battle for Britain’ came in the form of a war of words between officials in London, Brussels and the capitals of the EU’s other 27 member states. I can’t believe it. “When Carl didn’t come home, I knew he was dead, but I needed to find out exactly what happened. I’m relieve d t h a t I n o w kn o w and th a t h e c a n r e s t in peace. “Every day I get memories coming through on Snapchat reminding me of our threeyear relationship. I am staying strong and these photos are keeping the memories of him alive. I will always love Carl, but I’m glad that I now have some closure.” The body of 38-year-old Carr, who went missing after a night out in Cabo Roig last

Later that day, Carl went to a nightclub in Almoradi where he was seen with the murder suspect’s girlfriend, who has been remanded in prison accused of covering up the crime as well as for extortion and possession of a firearm. Danielle, who did not officially know that any arrests had taken place although she’d heard some rumours, has also asked if people could respect her privacy during this difficult time and stop continuously calling her mobile and sending her Facebook friend requests, of which she has received around 300 in the last week.

Commentary by Moneycorp GBP weekly currency update GBP loses Commons vote AFTER nearly a week of upward progress, the wheels came off sterling’s bandwagon when the House of Commons worked its way through a string of amendments to the latest Brexit withdrawal plan. As each was rejected, the pound moved lower in real time. Of the two which received Parliament’s approval, one was no more than a plea not to leave without a deal. The other was a rehash of the Plan A which had been comprehensively discarded two weeks earlier, in which the unpopular Irish Backstop was replaced by ‘alternative arrangements.’ Investors had been hoping for (and even assuming) the passing of an amendment which would allow the House to postpone Article 50 if no deal was imminent. What they saw instead was a show of bogus party unity with little prospect of approval by the EU. They were not impressed, and the pound has been on the back foot ever since. It is lower on all
fronts, down by an average of 1.3%. EUR weekly currency update EUR weathers lacklustre economy One set of eurozone economic data offered some help to the euro. Tuesday’s lending and money supply figures from the European Central Bank showed both holding up well, a sign of continued economic vigour. Most of the others were less supportive. German business confidence faded. All but one of the European Commission’s confidence measures were lower. Gross domestic product for Euroland as a whole expanded by a provisional 0.2% in the fourth quarter, unchanged from Q3, but Italy dropped back into recession and Germany marked down its growth forecast for this year, from 1.8% to 1.0%. When the ECB president talked to the European Parliament about monetary policy, he was more upbeat than at his previous visit. The operative word there is ‘temporary’: Trump says he will shut it all down again in mid-February if he does not get the money for his wall. A lasting effect of the shutdown is the economic data, which have been prevented from appearing. They begin to flow again today, with November’s new home sales, but it will be weeks before the backlog is sorted out. Wednesday’s Federal Reserve press conference was the main event of the dollars’ week. As expected, the Fed kept its benchmark rate unchanged and made the now-habitual comment it will be ‘patient’ in making rate adjustments. But the chairman managed to give the impression it might be facing not just a pause, but a halt to the tightening process. The dollar fell, leaving it just a quarter of a cent ahead of the troubled pound.

According to Spanish media, the monarch visited the Gran Capitan base in Besmayah, just outside Baghdad, to boost morale on the ground, as well as pave the way for future Spanish business opportunities as Iraq begins to stabilise. Whilst at the base, troops sang Happy Birthday to King Felipe, who was celebrating his 51st birthday. The surprise visit, known about ahead of time only by Spain’s Minister for Defence and prime minister, comes as the country’s troops help tackle Daesh. King Felipe told soldiers: “The relationship with Iraq will last, and will largely be for the inheritance you leave forever.” He added: “Thank you for what you do and how you do it, for your professionalism and

Thief ruins Brit trip A BRITISH couple have shared a video of a thief breaking into their car while they enjoyed a holiday in Barcelona last August. Rommy Jan and Gayner Nash told one publication they were in the city during a ‘dream summer holiday,’ when the thief was reportedly seen to smash the back window of their €120,000 Range Rover, and make off with their possessions. The couple claim the thief stole Mrs Nash’s Prada handbag and purse, which contained €1,300, before getting into a car parked nearby and driving away.

Bank stands by CEO decision THE president of Spanish bank Santander said the decision to backtrack on the appointment of Andrea Orcel as the company’s chief executive was difficult, but right. Ana Botin said the cancellation of the appointment followed the ‘highest standards’ of corporate governance. She was speaking as the bank presented its annual results. Botin said: “When we learned of the full amount of the contract we felt it was not acceptable, especially given our responsibilities to our shareholders, employees and to society in general.”

GDP growth falls short TOTAL economic output (Gross Domestic Product, GDP) in Spain grew by 2.5 per cent last year, a 10th less than government predictions according to the National Institute for Statistics (INE). Quarterly year-on-year growth amounted to 0.7 per cent between October and December, one-10th higher than the previous three quarters and above government predictions. The value of GDP stood at more than €1.2 trillion, INE data showed. Economy Minister Nadia Calvino said Spain’s economy was growing faster than that of its neighbours.
By Joe Gerrard The growth of 0.7 per cent between October and December was driven by a rise in household purchasing of 0.5 per cent compared to the previous quarter. Government spending increases of 1.2 per cent, the highest since the first quarter of 2015, also contributed to the rise. Gross fixed capital formation, the amount spent by firms in investments on fixed assets, fell by 0.2 per cent after growing throughout the year. Data for different sectors showed
farming grew by 5.3 per cent in the fourth quarter of 2018 while construction rose by 1.2 per cent and services by 0.8 per cent. Industrial output shrank by 0.9 per cent, INE data showed. Exports grew by 1.9 per cent between October and December after falling by 0.9 per cent in the previous quarter. Imports grew by 1.1 per cent during the same period. Last year marked the third in a row where GDP growth has slowed. It grew by 3 per cent year-on-year in 2017 and 3.2 per cent in 2016, according to INE data.
SPANISH Social Security Secretary Octavio Granado has said the government would like companies to help plug gaps in the welfare budget by paying more in contributions. Granado said Spanish companies ought to be matching the level of contributions made by businesses in other European countries. Employer contributions in Spain total around 9.7 per cent of GDP compared to the European average of 10.4 per cent. “We do not want the competitiveness of Spain to be based on low salaries and low prices,” Granado said.

Ebioss CEO steps down THE chief executive of Spanish energy firm Ebioss Luis Sanchez Angrill, has resigned from his position after reaching an agreement with board members as restructuring continues, the company said in a statement.

GROWTH: Sales rose by 2 per cent. SWEDISH fashion store chain H&M saw its sales in Spain grow by 2 per cent between December 2017 and November 2018 to €710 million, the company has said. The results come as the company recorded a total net profit of more than €1.2 billion during the same period, 22 per cent less than the year before. H&M’s chief executive
Karl-Johan Persson said the fall came on the back of a ‘demanding’ year for the company but added it was on the right track. It comes as H&M has been trying to improve logistics in a bid to cut costs and boost profits, the results of which are beginning to bear fruit, Persson added. The firm currently has 172 stores in Spain.
SPANISH distribution company Logista netted a profit of €36 million between October and December last year, 1.9 per cent less than the same time in 2017, while revenues rose by 5 per cent to €2.4 billion according to company data.
Price plan DIA, one of Spain’s largest supermarkets, has announced it will cut prices on 500 of its own-brand products by up to 30 per cent while also seeking to increase capital by €600 mill i o n i n a b i d t o s t a v e o ff competition.
Stock market hits lows THE total value of shares on Spain’s stock exchange stood at more than €38.8 billion at the end of January, the lowest figure for that month in 12 years. Spanish Stock Exchange (BME) data showed the figure was lower than the average for January of more than €84 billion between 2008 and 2018. The total value of trading in 2018 was more than
€587 million, 10.5 per cent less than the year before and the lowest since 2003 according to BME data. Market analyst Pablo Fernandez de Mosteyrin said uncertainty caused by the ongoing trade war sparked by US tariff hikes, Brexit and other factors were dampening trade. The IBEX index has recovered by 6.2 per cent since the start of 2019.

LEAPY LEE SAYS IT OTHERS THINK IT I TRULY do believe, that were I confronted with the individual who coined the word ‘Brexit’ I would happily abandon all my views on peace, love and compassion and take fiendish delight in strangling them with my bare hands! Last week, I took the trouble to count how many times the word was mentioned on Alan Boulton’s Sky News programme; I actually lost count (and the will to live), after 36 utterances. But that, of course, is the whole idea is it not? The ploy of the remoaner’s has always been to make us all so heartily sick of the whole mind-warping, utterly teeth-grinding caboodle, that we’ll accept any result which makes it simply go away (or go their way!). Well I personally think they could well have shot themselves in the foot. The remainers’ petulant plan to create indecision and confusion in the British ranks, and particularly its politicians, has lulled the EU mob into a false sense of security. In their arrogance and growing disdain for the UK, they are beginning to reveal their true colours, issuing statements and opinions which are showing the British public just what they truly do think of us. Well I have news for all of them; the British

Particularly when it finds itself at the receiving end of insults from nations they never had much respect for in the first place. There is a perceptible change of mood in the attitude of the Brits. People are beginning to question the true ambitions of the European
Union. They are beginning to realise that the forming of a ‘super state’ with its own army controlling all of Europe, in much the same manner as another historical despot attempted in the not too distant past, is no longer quite so ludicrous. Well, with Germany on the brink of recession, Italy and Greece just about ready to
abandon ship, and a whole host of countries who were initially bribed to join the coalition now finding the money drying up, the outlook for the Union’s ambitions are beginning to look just about as bleak as they did 70-odd years ago. As for the scare tactics being deployed by the big companies, threatening to abandon the UK should it leave the EU, let them. Most of them are monopolies, firmly enmeshed in the highly lucrative and elite Euro club. A bunch of profit-mongers, heavily involved in the plot to inveigle the whole of Europe into their greedy money-grabbing empires. The last thing they want is competition from the rest of the world. Have no doubt, the minute it is established we are truly dumping this whole bunch of self-satisfying greedy egomaniacs, huge worldwide conglomerates will be queuing up to create business with a highly successful European country which is unshackled from the yoke of the Brussels bureaucrats and able to negotiate on its own terms. TECH FOR THE TIMID FROM software to malware to adware to freeware; it’s wearing keeping up with the wares in the techno world. Hardware used to be the DIY tools everyone but me could use with ease. Now it’s the lumps of plastic and metal the average westerner spends 5.9 hours a day using with digital media. We all know it’s software which makes the hardware work. But ‘all the wares’ in today’s IT slang can denote anything ranging from shareware (from developers hoping to shame you into paying) to vapourware (announced prematurely as The Next Big Thing but still just a twinkle on a developer’s screen). There’s malware which can do terrible things to your computer and your bank balance if you pay the ransom, to freeware which is exactly what it says on the tin, to the dubiously-named crapware: all that rubbish software pre-loaded on your new computer and which you will never, ever use, what were they thinking? Adware lets you use the program

HUMANWARE MEETS SOFTWARE: Accept or abort? or app in return (they hope) for glancing occasionally at the pop-up ads littering the interface. Groupware is software which lets you share stuff, from documents to collaborative materials. Spyware lurks on your phone or computer and ‘phones home’ your habits to the bad guys, somewhere. Courseware is that wonderful edu-
cational stuff we used to have to stay awake through the night to watch on Open University, but which can now teach us things at a time and place of our choosing. At its best (as in a MOOC, or a Massive Open Online Course), courseware lets us learn things we could never have dreamed of studying pre-internet. At worst its origina-
tors will take your money, teach you next to nothing and then send you a diploma from the University of Bombay Railway Station. Firmware is what drives your hardware, and feeware is a geeky term for commercial software. For junkware see bloatware see crapware, while fatware is bigger than it needs to be. And for Turing’s sake is there no way to turn off those constant ‘upgrade now!’ pop-ups in nagware? Pushware turns up on your device when you wanted to download something else. Obnoxiousware is just getting silly now. Scumware definitely doesn’t remove stains from the bath. Nor does spamware promote processed meat. Ultimately the most dangerous ware of all is humanware (yes it really is a term). Powered by wetware (the brain and nervous system), it’s also known disparagingly as liveware or warmware or even just meatware. Though where does that leave a vegetarian programmer?
Good wares, bad warez CHANGE just one innocent letter in all the wares and it becomes a far darker affair entirely. ‘Warez’ covers the vast slew of copyrighted digital content copied and/or distributed illegally. Pirate a paid office suite, a movie or an MP3 and you’ve joined the renegade warez community. Warez are downloaded at your peril, perhaps freighted with hidden, malicious coding which can wreak havoc on your device. The most-pirated software on warez sites these days is Windows in its various flavours, Microsoft Office, Adobe Photoshop and with no sense of irony at all, antivirus programs. But as the warez industry gets squeezed, the good news is ‘only’ 37 per cent of the software installed on our computers worldwide is now illegal. Guilty as charged m’lud?

LAURA PENN ‘PENN TO PAPER’ A BIG ‘thank you’ to all the people who responded to this column a few weeks ago when I wrote about the A-Z of Mallorca. It seems I am not alone in finding this island unique and fascinating and I was delighted by the response and suggestions. If you missed it, when I first came to Mallorca I started to jot down in a notebook things which were new to me about the island; everything from sobrassada (spicy sausage) to suirells (whistles). This notebook grew, and was transferred onto computer and has now become quite a resource of local knowledge, though I say so myself! Sam from Santa Ponsa even suggested I publish it as a book! Nice idea, but no one does books any more. Everything is online. Unless you have the luxury of two weeks on the beach, no one has time

Do we rely on social media? to pore over a book. I was recently asked to proofread a 380-page novel and it was hard going. My eyes were out on sticks by the end of it. It made me realise my attention span has shrunk to the size of a Facebook post. Everybody’s has! One of the things campmates in the jungle in the TV show ‘I’m a Celebrity… Get me Out of Here’ noticed, was how much they didn’t miss their mobile phones. Before they entered the jungle, most of the celebs (particularly the young ones) were concerned how they would fare without social media. By the end of it, almost all agreed they had appreciated not being addicted to their mobiles and how they had enjoyed actually talking to each other. It made me realise a thing or two, like how I used to check social media before getting out of bed. How I used to use the phone screen as an excuse to

LAST week I wrote about self-improvement obsessions which gripped the UK in January like Veganuary, dry January and ‘clothes sobriety.’ January’s got a lot to answer for, hasn’t it? With New Year’s resolutions already starting to founder, we’re then hit by Blue Monday, reckoned to be the most depressing day of the year, and it’s a long time ‘til spring! Well, to this list, add self-help books. The annual chart for audio books recently issued by Audible (part of Amazon), shows that more than a quarter of the top 50 are self-help books, all but two of which are by men. Unlike e-books, bought most commonly by women, audio books are, apparently, the domain of young, urban men. As a woman, I think men in general are in a particularly difficult period due to #MeToo and similar movements, and it’s great they’re seeking to better understand themselves, how to take control of their lives and be as happy and successful as possible. This is only good news for all of us; men and women. Generally, though, isn’t the secret to life being happy with your lot? You don’t really need the latest kitchen/car/holiday/lifestyle. Just go for a walk with the dog, pop into your local

If you look around any public space you will see people staring at a mini screen, not each other. I have even seen entire families out to dinner, all of them looking at tablets/phones and not each other. Psychologists warn that even having your phone on the table is a mental distraction as you are drawn to it as a reminder of all the other things you are not doing.
A team of cognitive anthropologists studying the ‘dysfunctional’ use of smart devices has found ‘our dependence on technology likely stems from a desire to connect with other people.’ Presumably the people sitting with us don’t count. Worrying research published in 2017 revealed we reach for our smartphones around 4,000 times a year for no apparent reason. More than one in three people think they are addicted

It’s not all bad; you can learn a lot from Google and it’s great for fact-checking so you look smarter than you are. Personally, I cherish Google Maps or I would still be lost in a banana plantation in New South Wales! I would say mobile phones are the biggest social change in my life time; or should that be the biggest anti-social change? You can hear more from the A-Z of Mallorca on my radio show this Sunday but for now, here is ‘E’ for ‘Ensaimada.’ This most traditional of all Mallorca pastries originated in the Middle East and brought to the island by the Moors, although this is hotly contested. The first written references to this tasty treat date back to the 17th century. Shaped in the form of a coil is a mix made of flour, water, sugar and eggs
with pork lard fat instead of butter. The lard is named ‘saim’ in Catalan from the Arabic ‘sham’ meaning fat. There is the plain version, often sprinkled with icing sugar, a savoury version covered in sobrassada sausage and pumpkin (called Tallades) and sweet versions such as Crema (egg cream), or Cabell d’angel (filled with the stringy bits of a pumpkin cooked with sugar). Large ensaimadas can be bought as gifts and are sold in octagonal pizza-style boxes. Although you can find them in patisseries all over the island, only the bakeries displaying the official ‘Indicacio Geogra fica Protegida Ensaimada de Mallorca’ plaque can claim to be the real deal. Can he get SIP card? I confess that I am one of those UK false residents living mostly in Spain without any Spanish documentation at all, not even the European Union citizen residence paper. Now with Brexit coming up, I am concerned about health care. I live in the Valencian Region and people tell me I can apply for an SIP card to get healthcare here, and that I only need a certificate of ‘empadronamiento’ in my town and my passport. Is this true? The SIP stands for Sistema de Informacion Poblacional, the System of Information regarding the Population. Every resident of the Valencian Region is supposed to have one, which enables the authorities to plan their services. Even a newborn baby gets a SIP. Basically, it is a census. The SIP is now being changed to a new model card and called a TSI-SIP or a Tarjeta Sanitaria Individual. Let us know how you get on.

Moffat and Gatiss reveal when Dracula series starts fangs. With the project known to be in development for a couple of years now, it looks like the Dracula cameras are finally being readied for action. Speaking at the Radio Times Covers Party recently, the writing pair were asked for an update on the situation, with Moffat noting: “We are shooting soon - but obviously, we’re n o t t e l l i n g y o u w h e n . The great Trump mystery Mike Senker In my opinion Views of a Grumpy Old Man ROGER J STONE JR, a long-time adviser to Teflon Don is yet another Trump adviser/official to be charged in the special counsel investigation. Robert S Mueller III, who is investigating possible links between the Trump campaign and Russian officials, has issued more than 100 criminal counts against at least 28 people and three companies. Of that number, at least 10 have been found guilty and are in prison. We aren’t talking about low-profile people either; his lawyers and top advisors are included in that number. About 26 members of his staff have been fired; a number no other President has achieved. The man tweets so many lies, it is impossible to count. So my question is, what am I missing? How is this man still president? He has caved in on shutting down all the government workers. He will never get the money for the wall, yet he’s still there. He’s a racist, homophobic, misogynist yet he’s still there

FOR people around my age (born in the late 1960’s), our first experience of pop music involved having to listen to your parents records from the 1950’s and 1960’s. The Beatles, The Stones, The Who, or if you were really unlucky, Herman’s Hermits! I was lucky in that when I was maybe four or five my dad brought home the album ‘Slayed by Slade.’ For years it was my favourite album; I played it to death. Yes, I could use the record player at that age! Slade were an amazing proposition. Not exactly pretty boys, a singer who looked old, mad dress sense… but boy could they write and play a tune. Noddy Holder’s voice, Dave Hill’s guitar and hats, Jim Lea’s bass and violin and Don Powell’s drumming all added up to a unique band. Slade ended up being the most successful British band of the 1970’s with six number
rambling day in day out on Twitter calling people names like a kid in a school playground. What does he have to do to be kicked out? He is a snake, oil-salesman and a liar with zero empathy for anyone. He even treats his wife like some menial staff member, not even sharing an umbrella with her. He has to go down in history as the worst US president ever. Astonishing! Who do British politicians think they are fooling when walking round a hospital or a school? Does Matt Hancock really think that we believe because he has his jacket off, his sleeves rolled up and his tie tucked in that he has been there cleaning the loos or doing some kind of manual labour? We know their PR advisors are telling them to do it. Why are we treated like idiots? I saw it on the news the other day and there they were, walking around like they had turned up to do a shift when we all know, all they do is pay lip-service to the major problems the UK has with the NHS and schools. If you are going to be filmed walking around, it’s fine with me if you have your jacket on, mate; I know you are doing sweet FA about anything. Jacket off will not fool me or anybody else.

I WAS wondering how much more UK consumers will pay for their food and drinks should there be a no-deal Brexit, Since the UK imports 30 per cent of its food, tariffs could have a meaningful impact on UK household budgets. We ran back-of-the-envelope calculations to estimate WTO tariffs on average UK food and drink spending and found: For each household, a year ’s worth of food and drink tariffs could be equivalent to the cost of two weeks’ worth of food and drink spending. The average UK household (according to Office of National Statistics Family Spending data) could pay an additional £132 for the weekly shop and £78 for takeaways/restaurants each year, or £210 overall. For each £50 of weekly food and drink spending today, a household should budget an extra £1.92 per week or £100 per year. EY
It’s never too late… I REFER to the recent correspondence from Joan Butler (Issue 1751) in which she laments the fact that letters and Christmas cards posted at the beginning of December only arrived in Spain at the end of January. I experienced this ‘phenomenon’ several years ago and after some investigation discovered that there is a very simple, but rather surprising explanation. Having witnessed letters posted in the national post box being mixed together in a supermarket trolley with those in the international box I also discovered the reason for the delay to the Christmas post. Those letters and cards arriving early in Spain are placed at the bottom of a trunk and those arriving later are placed on top. When it comes to delivering the mail those on top are removed first and as a result those arriving first are the last to be distributed. You may remember the slogan many years ago Post early for Christmas however if your letters and cards are destined for Spain it is preferable to post late for Christmas! Peter Sanderson

Poverty risk THE number of Spanish households where children live with unemployed parents has almost doubled since the last recession began, showing little has been done to mend damage the crisis caused. Figures from Spain’s Labour Force Survey revealed there are now 139,000 households with jobless parents and that about one in three Spanish children are at risk of poverty. Spain was third only to Romania and Bulgaria for the amount of children facing hardship. The figures expose the hollowness of assurances that the economy has bounced back. Many in Spain and across Europe remain unemployed or severely underemployed. Those fortunate enough to have jobs increasingly work on zero-hour contracts and within the rising ‘gig’ economy. Oxfam data shows the poorest 50 per cent of Spanish people have seen their incomes fall by 4 per cent since the onset of the last recession in 2008. Meanwhile, the wealth of the richest 1 per cent has grown by 7 per cent. These figures show a tiny number of wealthy people continue to grow rich in a ‘recovery’ where half the population increasingly struggles to provide for itself. It is in reality a recovery enjoyed exclusively by a tiny segment of the population. Children are now paying for faults of an economic system that caused the last crisis with what should be some of the happiest years of their lives. Many were not even alive when the recession began.

Clean break LIKE with most things in life, the key to glowing, healthy skin starts with thorough preparation. Just as the key to success in so many areas is often the unseen work carried out before the main event, every successful skincare regime begins with the same thing; clean skin. She claims this is the amount of time needed to allow the cleansing agents to properly break down oil, make-up, and dead skin, and allow the products to actually reach our pores. Nayamka explains this amount of time is also long enough to allow any active ingredients the cleanser itself has - whether to help with brightness, oil control, or hydration to penetrate the skin.
COMING CLEAN: Experts claim we should cleanse for 60 seconds. She says if we force ourselves to spend more time cleaning our faces, we are less likely to leave out some of the more commonly-missed areas we often ignore, such as around the sides of our nose, under the jaw line or on the

Next up, the show travels to Axarquia and Sheffield-born market trader Jacqui Harrison. As money is tight, Jacqui needs to make as much as she can at the tourist night markets down on the promenade. However, with an
expensive licence to pay for the privilege, and a paid assistant for all the carrying, can her stall selling hats, bags, lipsticks and nicknacks attract enough customers to make it all worthwhile or will she have to rethink her whole business? In this episode, audiences will also meet Victor Nash, 66, a former publican turned motorhome maverick and international traveller. The larger-than-life cockney has spent the last 18 years living in his motorhome and 10 of them parked up in the gorgeous campsite near the pretty port of Cabopino. The Columbus, his beloved motorhome has seen him through tough times and tragedies as well as the highest highs of his life. Barry Duke ANNE HERNANDEZ is administrator for a Facebook page called Brexpats in Spain, and she recently sparked a lively debate when she wrote of the atrocious behaviour of some Brits living here who have suddenly realised their need for residency, what with the Brexit calamity looming. Until recently, large numbers of UK expats did zilch to comply with Spanish regulations, imagining that being British somehow made them oh-so-special, and absolved them from applying for essential documentation. Many, who’ve learned not a word of Spanish, are now in a blind panic, scuttling to people like Anne for assistance at police stations and other administrative offices. These centres are no longer as accessible as they once were because of the sheer numbers demanding the residencias they should have applied for upon settling here, and they are now having hissy-fits about delays. Anne wrote: “At the police station yesterday helping somebody get

ROAD TEST by Nick Fletcher THE Subaru Forester has been a familiar sight on the roads for more than 20 years and over that period has been revised and improved several times, gradually transforming from a versatile four-wheel-drive estate to a smart family SUV which still retains formidable off-road ability. It competes in a crowded SUV sector but has a distinct edge over main rivals with its impressive tough-terrain performance, and is able to tackle rough roads, mud, snow and ice with relative ease. Forester comes in two versions and the entry level XE costs €34,746 (£30,000) and has features such as fourwheel-drive, automatic transmission, cruise control, rear camera and touch-screen infotainment centre. The XE Premium Lineartronic which I recently tested costs €37,638 (£32,500) and adds other features including sunroof, heated leather seats, sat-nav, powered tailgate, adaptive cruise control, lane-

THE concept of a beach buggy really took hold in the California of the 1960’s. The most popular vehicle to be converted into a fun, dune-riding car was the Volkswagen Beetle, with its chassis being used as the base for tens of thousands of examples. Now the Wolfsburg-based car manufacturer is bringing the legend back to life with a modern, clean version of the classic buggy. At the beginning of March, Volkswagen will reveal the first fully electric version of a new buggy. Taking its cues from popular American dune buggies, the concept vehicle is based on the modular electric drive matrix (MEB), which according to head designer Klaus Bischoff demonstrates how multifaceted the new platform is. He said: “A buggy is more than a car. It is vibrancy and energy on four wheels. These attributes are embodied by the new e-buggy, which demon-

strates how a modern, non-retro interpretation of a classic can look, and more than anything else, the emotional bond which electric mobility can create.” True to the original style, this reinterpretation of a proper buggy has no fixed roof or conventional doors, while the free-standing wheels fitted with off-road tyres and open side sills
dominate the overall look. The new MEB concept vehicle shows this fully electric platform can be used for more than just largescale series production models. Like the Beetle chassis of yesteryear, the modular electric drive matrix has the potential to allow the development of low-volume niche series.
The history of recreational vehicles and Volkswagen technology is a long one. From the Beetle convertible and special bodies produced by companies such as Hebmüller and Rometsch, to fully open designs of the kind em-
braced by the Meyers Manx buggy, the Beetle chassis allowed for creative - and sometimes exclusive - custom solutions for decades. Globally, around 250,000 individual vehicles were built as one-offs or at low volumes through to the 1980’s. The latest one-of-a-kind model, the fully electric concept buggy, will be revealed for the first time at the 89th International Geneva Motor Show from March 7 - 17.

a classier ambiance. Seating is very comfortable and supportive and there is plenty of adjustment of the steering wheel and the powered driver’s seat to get an ideal position. All-round visibility is very good, with the added advantage of a reversing camera. Out and about, the Forester is surprisingly light and easy to drive and it corners with reassuring composure. The ride quality is on the firm side but still

comfortable and on smooth roads where it is likely to spend most of its time, it is extremely car-like to drive and handle. With good head and leg room, five adults can be easily accommodated, and there is ample boot space at 505 litres. The boot floor is flat to make
loading easier and the rear seats fold to give van-like capacity for larger items. The Forester is not the cheapest family-size SUV in the class, but it is one of the most versatile and few can match its off-road capability and its tough build quality, backed by a five-year warranty.
