Rail link moving forward THE long-awaited Murcia to Almeria AVE high-speed rail link is a few steps closer to becoming a reality with the news works look set to start on the Pulpi-Vera and the River Andarax-El Puche line sections. The ADIF railway infrastructure administrator announced its High-Speed Administration Council has now awarded the works contracts, which have a combined budget of just short of €154 million. Of this, nearly €147 million corresponds to the 25.7-kilometre stretch of line which will go through Pulpi, Cuevas del Almanzora and Vera municipalities. The works will include land movements, drainage and repositioning electrical and telephone services. Also planned are the construction of 10 viaducts, a pedestrian footbridge, raised crossings over roads, five walls and six tunnels. There will be one track from the starting point as far as the Vera-Almanzora passenger station, and a double track as far as the end of the route. Once up and running, passenger trains on the line will be able to travel at speeds of between 200 and 300km/h, and freight
trains at a minimum speed of 100km/h. The 30-month contract has gone to the Union Temporal de Empresas (UT), which is formed by Acciona Construccion and Ferrovial Agroman, the works scheduled for completion at the end of 2021. The announcement the ADIF High-speed Administration Council had allocated the €7.2 million contract to construct the 1.6-kilometre River Andarax-El Puche stretch of the line to the company Comsa, came just a few days after ADIF formally became the owner of 35 plots of land in Almeria City, Huercal de Almeria and Viator, which are needed for the works. The infrastructure project is expected to take 10 months to complete and will extend up to the beginning of the works to run the rail line underground in the El
Puche area of Almeria City. The contract includes repositioning 1.8 kilometres of track on the conventional Linares-Almeria line, and will be co-financed by the European Regional Development Fund. The Almeria Mesa del Ferrocarril, a platform for a number of organisations and institutions pushing for improvements to the province’s rail infrastructure, described the announcements on the AVE works contracts as ‘good news,’ but added, ‘especially taking into account that now for more than seven years
Almeria Province has had the high-speed works paralysed.’ The platform was critical; it had taken four months between receiving companies’ bids and eventually choosing the one to take on the works. It also pointed out there would now have to be a period of time for the process of land expropriations for the PulpiVera section of line before works could start, and that there are other stretches of the Almeria-Murcia line for which works contracts have yet to be awarded. The government prediction for completion of the link is 2023.

Reckless driver suffered ‘psychotic break’
Jobless up ALMERIA ended January with an additional 1,257 people out of work, according to Employment Ministry figures, representing a 2.23 per cent increase in the provincial unemployment rate, and putting the total jobless figure at 57,526.
Break-in cost THE typical cost of a house break-in in Almeria Province is 15 per cent below the national average, according to an Insurance Company Association report, at €1,305.
Bullying POLICE and Guardia Civil registered 179 cases of psychological, verbal or physical bullying among six to 17-year-olds in Almeria’s schools between 2012 and 2017, with slightly more girls victims.

Car break-in reoffenders POLICE in Almeria charged two men with criminal records with stealing from vehicles. One is suspected of breaking the windows of two cars parked in the city centre, taking a laptop from one and from the other €1,150 in cash, a laser meter and an alarm remote control. Investigations led to the arrest of the 44-year-old, who has a police record for more than 30 similar offences. The second man was ac-
cused of breaking into five vehicles in Almeria City in November and January, smashing the window glass to get his hands on radios and other items of value. Police said the 41year-old had only just been released from prison and has notched up a hefty total of 81 arrests, mainly in Almeria. In the latest thefts the robber stole five radios and three cases of tools valued at around €2,300.
A COURT in Almeria ruled a 21-year-old who collided with vehicles and knocked over cyclists had suffered ‘a sudden psychotic break.’ The judge’s ruling came after the Prosecution Service modified its conclusions, and went from asking for a five-year prison sentence for reckless driving and assaulting an officer to requesting a year ’s probation and medical treatment. Forensic doctors who examined the young man said he had experienced an “acute psychotic episode” and had been suffering from “pseudo-hallucinations,” adding he had possibly been influenced by a popular video game and had lost “a sense of reality.”
The young man told the court he only realised what he’d done a month or so later, apologising for the damage he’d caused. The case dates back to February 2016. His father picked him up from work, double-parking to get out and pick up bread. When other vehicles started beeping the youngster jumped into the driver ’s seat and sped off down the Avenida Cabo de Gata towards the University of Almeria, bumping stationary and moving vehicles and going into a group of cyclists. He eventually stopped in the middle of the road, sat by the sea and took selfies while making the victory sign and smoking. When police went to arrest him he jumped into the water.

Brit numbers drop THE number of British residents in Almeria has dropped significantly in recent years from around the 22,000 mark in 2012 to just over 14,300 today. UK citizens are nevertheless the second most numerous European Union nationality resident in the province after Romanians, representing 27 per cent of the total. The majority of British expatriates have homes in Levante area municipalities, notably Albox (1,223 registered UK residents), Arboleas (2,438), Mojacar
(1,589), Zurgena (884), Vera (709), and Turre (515). There are also 189 registered British residents in Almeria City. The province has lost nearly 22,000 registered European residents since 2012, while the number of Russians living in Almeria has gradually increased in recent years and today stands at around 4,000. This compares with just 23 two decades ago. The number of Moroccan residents has gone up by 10,000 in 10 years to 45,000.

Friends centre now open THE Almanzora Group of Friends has officially opened the doors of its library and information centre in Albox. Local mayor Francisco Torrecillas cut the ribbon to the new premises in Plaza San Antonio at Saturday morning’s inauguration, also unveiling a commemorative plaque to mark the occasion. Before Cava and snacks to celebrate the event, the mayor took the opportunity to outline his plans for the Barrio Alto neighbourhood of the town in which the centre is located. Barrio Alto is the oldest part of Albox, and Torrecillas said he hoped the opening of the centre would be the first of many initiatives to rejuvenate the area. Almanzora Group of Friends President Shelagh Copeland thanked the local authority for its support, saying, “We are grateful to the mayor and the

Year-round tourism plan PROMOTING the municipality’s cultural heritage lies at the heart of a Huercal-Overa council plan to boost year-round tourism and stimulate the economy. Presenting the Strategic Plan for the Revitalisation of Cultural Heritage last week, Mayor Domingo Fernandez, said the aim was to follow the guidelines set out in the plan to give Huercal-Overa broad appeal “so tourists come and enjoy our municipality every day of the year.” The council is set to invest nearly €700,000 in around 20 measures under the
umbrella of the plan between now and 2023 “to grow tourism in our municipality,” the mayor said. He revealed these included creating an Explore Huercal-Overa corporate identity and starting the procedure for the emblematic Cuatro Torres building to be awarded BIC Cultural Interest classification. Tourism Councillor Monica Navarro said actions for this year include setting up an archaeological campus for teenagers for the summer months and improving the Easter Week celebrations app.

Taxis join marketing campaign ALMERIA City’s nearly 300 taxis have become marketing vehicles for the 2019 Spanish Gastronomy Capital events. RISKY: Guardia Civil said some of the beauty treatment products seized were out of date.
Dodgy beauty business INVESTIGATIONS into adverse reactions from bargain-priced beauty treatments resulted in the arrest of a woman on charges including the unqualified practice of a profession, and fraud. The victims said they had heard word of mouth about aesthetic treatments at very reasonable prices, and in December had called the woman offering the services. They met up with her and agreed to a lip treatment, going with her to an apartment in Garrucha where there was another woman who claimed
she was a doctor in Russia. In one of the apartment bedrooms the two women injected hyaluronic acid into the clients’ lips using disposable syringes and without any specific preparation or hygiene procedures. Both victims said they subsequently suffered reddening, inflammation and infection in the lip area, for which they required medical assistance. The Guardia said the two women left the country when they realised they were being investigated, but at the end of last month they locat-
ed one of them in Garrucha and searched the apartment which had served as the beauty clinic. Officers found various products used for aesthetic treatments, some of which were out of date. Having established that she lacked the qualifications to give these treatments, officers detained the woman, identified as 41-year-old MG. The Guardia has yet to locate the second woman, and the investigation dubbed Operation Relleno remains open.
Fake theft arrests DOUBTS about the veracity of a reported mugging in Roquetas de Mar led Guardia Civil to arrest a 66-year-old man on charges of faking a crime. Guardia initially launched investigations when the man made a claim he had been approached from behind by someone on a bicycle who had grabbed his wallet containing €500. However, there was no evidence of the mugging having taken place on surveillance camera footage of the supposed crime location.
Looking into the 66-year-old’s past, Guardia discovered he had made several previous claims he had been a mugging victim, reporting the supposed theft of personal documents, a mobile phone SIM card and cash. Taking a closer look at the past claims investigators established he had never requested duplicate documents from the corresponding authorities or a new SIM card, further raising suspicions and ultimately leading to his detention.

Microcar marihuana GUARDIA CIVIL arrested two men after finding more than 13 kilos of marihuana hidden in a microcar while carrying out spot checks in Berja. A strong smell of the drug emanating from the car and the jumpy behaviour of
the driver and passenger prompted officers to search the vehicle. They came across a plastic bag full of marihuana buds hidden on the floor under a bag of vegetables, and more of the drug concealed inside three bags of animal feed in the boot.

‘Dignified refuge’ for abandoned dogs THE new Huercal-Overa municipal rescue centre for abandoned dogs is up and running. Mayor Domingo Fernandez cut the ribbon on the new facility at the official inauguration on Sunday, accompanied by local councillors, representatives from the APA Nueva Vida Animal Protection Association and residents, many of whom had taken part in an earlier dog walk along the Green Way. “Today we fulfill the government team’s commitment to providing a solution to the problem of abandoned dogs in our municipality,” the mayor commented, saying the local authority had “created a centre at which these animals can be given a dignified refuge.” Fernandez also praised the

The local authority invested €107,000 in the centre, which is located in the Rambla Grande area. Among the facilities are kennels, a clinic, a bathing and disinfection clinic and a play area for the dogs.
Social and cultural hub RESIDENTS of Santa Maria de Nieva have started making use of the new municipal Social Hall. The first event to be staged in the building was the celebration of the Dia de la Torta, or Day of the Cake. A dance and cake lottery followed the annual mass and procession in honour of the municipality’s Virgen de las Nieves patron saint, which was attended by

The new centre was built with Rural Employment Development Programme and municipal funds, the Huercal-Overa mayor saying the aim was that it would become a social and cultural hub for the municipality.

Final whistle for turf THE grass is looking greener at Vera’s Sports City. The council has spent just under €100,000 on replacing the football ground’s artificial turf. Checking out progress on the laying of the new turf last week, Vera mayor Feliz Lopez said it was necessary “because for the 10 years of the current surface’s life it has been used daily for more than 10 hours every day, between sports schools, schools, enthusiasts, training and official matches, etc, which has caused considerable deterioration of the fibre, and subsidence in some areas.” The mayor maintained replacing the old turf had to be done to prevent the risk of injury to people using the ground. Funding for the new turf comes from Andalucia Local Entities’ subsidies for sports infrastructure and equipment. When Vera’s Sports City was built in

al centre in Bedar. Development deputy Oscar Liria said there will b e a n e w o n e - s t o r e y,
320sqm building, designed in keeping with the municipality’s characteristic architecture, which
will be used for staging all kinds of events and will have capacity for around 100 spectators.

Knife-wielder detained GUARDIA Civil detained a man wielding a knife and threatening customers in a bar in Balanegra. A call to the Guardia alerted officers to the situation. When a patrol got to the bar, they found the blinds half pulled down and a number of very anxious people at the door. Forcing their way in, the officers found the man brandishing a knife in one hand and threatening several people he had cornered at the back of the bar. Three of them had cuts and blood stains on their clothes. The officers managed to grab the man from behind and snatch the knife out of his hand. Four people suffered injuries in all, none of them serious. The victims told Guardia the aggressor had been in the bar with his brother, but they had had to leave because they had no money. He then went back to the bar and started making threats, demanding someone served him. Guardia identified the arrested man as 46-year-old MCC, a Balanegra resident.

THE Mojacar branch of the Royal British Legion is having a busy start to the year. On Thursday January 24 the branch had its usual coffee morning, this month at Casa Juan in Mojacar Playa, 38 people going along and joining in this social meeting. The next day, in conjunction with Kukis restaurant in Mojacar, the branch hosted a very successful Burns Night, with 73 people attending. Belinda and Richard of Kukis organised a three-course appropriately Scottish meal, Richard carrying in and ‘stabbing’ the Haggis, which was then ceremonially ‘addressed.’ This was followed by some lively dancing. The night’s raffle raised
€200 for the RBL, the branch thanking the restaurant staff and all those who supported the event. The next Mojacar RBL event is the branch meeting today (Thursday) at Mojacar’s Artisan’s Centre, starting at 11.15am, musician Kev Moore being the guest speaker. Then on February 19 the branch is having an evening at Miraflores, Los Gallardos, in conjunction with the campsite. There will be a quiz, with Tony Matthews as quizmaster, entertainment from Kay Francis and a buffet dinner. The Mojacar RBL welcomes everyone to their events, Legion member or not. Despite not being permitted to t a l k a b o u t th e s pecifi c s o f t h e ca s e , Danielle Coupe, Carr’s girlfriend o f t h r e e y e a r s, d id speak to EWN and said: “I am absolutely horrified that Carl was beaten to death. I can’t believe it. “When Carl didn’t come home, I knew he was dead, but I needed to find out exactly what happened. I’m relieve d t h a t I n o w kn o w and th a t h e c a n r e s t in peace. “Every day I get memories coming through on Snapchat reminding me of our threeyear relationship. I am staying strong and these photos are keeping the memories of him alive. I will always love Carl, but I’m glad that I now have some closure.” The body of 38-year-old Carr, who went missing after a night out in Cabo Roig last

The results of the audit are due in around the next 40 days, according to Junta sources. The Spanish Association of Wine Journalists and Writers (AEPEV) said on their Change.org page that wine was “inseparable” from Spanish culture at large. The drink goes hand-in-hand with Spain’s cuisine, as well as its history, economy and society, AEPEV added. “We Spaniards need to feel proud of our wine and what it represents. Wine is recognised as an integral cultural element of society. “It is the drink that most appeals to enjoyment, freedom of choice, distinction, history and culture,” AEPEV said. The association’s call comes as Argentina declared wine its national drink in 2013. Spain is home to 13 per cent of the world’s vineyards, according to data from the International Organisation of Wine and Vine (OIV). The country produced an estimated 3.5 billion litres of wine in 2017 according to the latest OIV data, about 13.6 per cent of the global total.

Julen’s father speaks out By Sally Underwood JOSE ROSELLO, the father of twoyear-old Julen who died after falling down a 72-metre borehole, has thanked the rescue workers who tried to save his son. Rosello said he and Julen’s mother, Victoria, are coping by staying with friends who are supporting them through their grief. Jose said: “I close my eyes and I see the same thing; the well.” He added friends have been encouraging him to play Playstation games to distract him. Jose added: “I curse myself… I curse that day.”
The father, who lost his only other s o n , O l i v e r, i n 2 0 1 7 t o a s u d d e n heart attack, said: “We used to live with my family, but when Oliver died we had to go, because everything was a memory.” Mr Rosello told Spanish media his family had been reading messages of support from around the world: “We have felt very supported. EU expat help BRITISH expatriate campaign groups have praised Members of the European Parliament (MEPs) after they called on senior EU officials to offer guarantees that current rights would be protected. Members of the New Europeans campaign group said EU officials including European Council (EC) president Donald Tusk were responsible for what happened to British people in the bloc after Brexit. It comes as the European Parliament’s Civil Liberties, Justice and Home Affairs Committee is due to begin debating offering guarantees to the 1.5 million British nationals living in the EU. Roger Casale, of New Europeans, said the issue was a test of EU values. His group is campaigning for a new visa to protect British expatriates’ rights and those of EU citizens in Britain. His comments follow 25 British MEPs writing a letter to Tusk and European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker calling for guarantees. Clauide Moraes, a Labour MEP who signed the letter, said ‘fundamental rights’ were at stake. “This is a moral issue,” Moraes said. A British government spokesperson called on the EU to offer guarantees as Britain has done for EU citizens there.

Theresa May wrote in The Telegraph that she would be armed with a fresh mandate to secure changes to the Withdrawal Agreement. It comes as EU officials and member states again said the current deal remains the best and only option for an orderly withdrawal on Friday, March 29. The opening salvos in May’s ‘battle for Britain’ came in the form of a war of words between officials in London, Brussels and the capitals of the EU’s other 27 member states. EU officials were particularly critical of renewed calls to ditch the Northern Irish backstop in favour of unspecified ‘alternative arrangements.’ A spokesperson for European Council (EC) president Donald Tusk said the backstop was not up for

Giant leap for Spain A SPANISH company has been contracted to build parts for a space station which will be the first to orbit the Moon. A group of agencies including Europe’s ESA and NASA have signed five contracts with the Basque Country-based SENER to build parts for the Lunar Orbital Platform-Gateway. It is set to design robotic arms, several mechanised gates and two communication antennas. SENER said in a statement that it had been a firstlevel supplier of components and systems for space-going structures for more than 50
years. Companies in the US, Canada, Russia and Japan have also been contracted to make parts for the station which is due to be built in the 2020’s. The Lunar Orbital Platform-Gateway is set to contain an on-board laboratory, living quarters for astronauts and a lander and rover to explore the Moon’s surface. It is similar in design and function to the International Space Station (ISS) which currently orbits the Earth. It is due to be assembled over several years before becoming operational in the late 2020’s at the earliest.

Cancer death rate down THE cancer mortality rate has dropped by 18 per cent worldwide since 1990, it has emerged. Scientists at the Society of Medical Oncology predict 277,234 cases of cancer will be diagnosed in Spain this year, but many will be survivable.
Jose Marcilla, General Director of Novartis Oncology Spain, said: “Although the number of diagnoses will continue to grow, fortunately today we are facing a new era in the approach to cancer, marked by increased survival, the arrest of progression and improving the quality of life of patients.”

SIX THOUSAND people signed a petition asking Orba’s mayor to free nine hunting dogs living in appalling conditions. A video of the dogs kept on short chains in cramped, dark and filthy quarters has been viewed on 72,000 occasions and shared 4,438 times on Facebook. The case was first reported in 2016 but went viral after the Asociacion Defensa Derecho Animal Marina Alta (Addama) complained once more about the dogs’ plight on Facebook. Since the social media became involved, the dogs’ story has touched hearts all over Spain and the Change.org petition is calling on Orba’s mayor Ignasi Cerver to free the dogs immediately. “We won’t be satisfied if the dogs’ conditions are improved by shutting them up in cages in the open, as chaining and permanently caging an animal is prohibited in the Valencian Community,” Addama said.

Holiday fatality A TOURIST died in Son Espases hospital after being run over by her own hire car in Andratx on Sunday. The 70-year-old French woman and her husband, who were staying at a hotel in Illetes, were driving to Cala Llamp, when they parked up in a pine wood so the deceased could get out to go to the toilet. For reasons yet unknown, the car began rolling backwards ‘uncontrollably’ and the woman was knocked down and dragged several metres. Her husband was still inside, but was unable to stop the vehicle before it came to a standstill after colliding with a tree. Police, ambulance crews and firefighters attended and managed to lift the car, releasing the victim. She was admitted to the hospital’s intensive care unit, but died from her ‘very serious’ injuries the same day. The Local Police of Andratx is investigating the circumstances.

Bank stands by CEO decision THE president of Spanish bank Santander said the decision to backtrack on the appointment of Andrea Orcel as the company’s chief executive was difficult, but right. Ana Botin said the cancellation of the appointment followed the ‘highest standards’ of corporate governance. She was speaking as the bank presented its annual results. GDP growth falls short TOTAL economic output (Gross Domestic Product, GDP) in Spain grew by 2.5 per cent last year, a 10th less than government predictions according to the National Institute for Statistics (INE). Quarterly year-on-year growth amounted to 0.7 per cent between October and December, one-10th higher than the previous three quarters and above government predictions. The value of GDP stood at more than €1.2 trillion, INE data showed. Economy Minister Nadia Calvino said Spain’s economy was growing faster than that of its neighbours.
By Joe Gerrard The growth of 0.7 per cent between October and December was driven by a rise in household purchasing of 0.5 per cent compared to the previous quarter. Government spending increases of 1.2 per cent, the highest since the first quarter of 2015, also contributed to the rise. Gross fixed capital formation, the amount spent by firms in investments on fixed assets, fell by 0.2 per cent after growing throughout the year. Data for different sectors showed
farming grew by 5.3 per cent in the fourth quarter of 2018 while construction rose by 1.2 per cent and services by 0.8 per cent. Industrial output shrank by 0.9 per cent, INE data showed. Exports grew by 1.9 per cent between October and December after falling by 0.9 per cent in the previous quarter. Imports grew by 1.1 per cent during the same period. Last year marked the third in a row where GDP growth has slowed. It grew by 3 per cent year-on-year in 2017 and 3.2 per cent in 2016, according to INE data.
SPANISH Social Security Secretary Octavio Granado has said the government would like companies to help plug gaps in the welfare budget by paying more in contributions. Granado said Spanish companies ought to be matching the level of contributions made by businesses in other European countries. Employer contributions in Spain total around 9.7 per cent of GDP compared to the European average of 10.4 per cent. “We do not want the competitiveness of Spain to be based on low salaries and low prices,” Granado said.

The results come as the company recorded a total net profit of more than €1.2 billion during the same period, 22 per cent less than the year before. H&M’s chief executive
Karl-Johan Persson said the fall came on the back of a ‘demanding’ year for the company but added it was on the right track. It comes as H&M has been trying to improve logistics in a bid to cut costs and boost profits, the results of which are beginning to bear fruit, Persson added. The firm currently has 172 stores in Spain.
SPANISH distribution company Logista netted a profit of €36 million between October and December last year, 1.9 per cent less than the same time in 2017, while revenues rose by 5 per cent to €2.4 billion according to company data.

Stock market hits lows THE total value of shares on Spain’s stock exchange stood at more than €38.8 billion at the end of January, the lowest figure for that month in 12 years. Spanish Stock Exchange (BME) data showed the figure was lower than the average for January of more than €84 billion between 2008 and 2018. The total value of trading in 2018 was more than
€587 million, 10.5 per cent less than the year before and the lowest since 2003 according to BME data. Market analyst Pablo Fernandez de Mosteyrin said uncertainty caused by the ongoing trade war sparked by US tariff hikes, Brexit and other factors were dampening trade. The IBEX index has recovered by 6.2 per cent since the start of 2019.

At the same time, the GBP/USD exchange rate has risen from $1.26 to $1.28, although it also briefly plummeted to a 20-month low of $1.24

LEAPY LEE SAYS IT OTHERS THINK IT I TRULY do believe, that were I confronted with the individual who coined the word ‘Brexit’ I would happily abandon all my views on peace, love and compassion and take fiendish delight in strangling them with my bare hands! Last week, I took the trouble to count how many times the word was mentioned on Alan Boulton’s Sky News programme; I actually lost count (and the will to live), after 36 utterances. But that, of course, is the whole idea is it not? The ploy of the remoaner’s has always been to make us all so heartily sick of the whole mind-warping, utterly teeth-grinding caboodle, that we’ll accept any result which makes it simply go away (or go their way!). Well I personally think they could well have shot themselves in the foot. The remainers’ petulant plan to create indecision and confusion in the British ranks, and particularly its politicians, has lulled the EU mob into a false sense of security. In their arrogance and growing disdain for the UK, they are beginning to reveal their true colours, issuing statements and opinions which are showing the British public just what they truly do think of us. Well I have news for all of them; the British

Particularly when it finds itself at the receiving end of insults from nations they never had much respect for in the first place. There is a perceptible change of mood in the attitude of the Brits. People are beginning to question the true ambitions of the European
Union. They are beginning to realise that the forming of a ‘super state’ with its own army controlling all of Europe, in much the same manner as another historical despot attempted in the not too distant past, is no longer quite so ludicrous. Well, with Germany on the brink of recession, Italy and Greece just about ready to
abandon ship, and a whole host of countries who were initially bribed to join the coalition now finding the money drying up, the outlook for the Union’s ambitions are beginning to look just about as bleak as they did 70-odd years ago. As for the scare tactics being deployed by the big companies, threatening to abandon the UK should it leave the EU, let them. Most of them are monopolies, firmly enmeshed in the highly lucrative and elite Euro club. A bunch of profit-mongers, heavily involved in the plot to inveigle the whole of Europe into their greedy money-grabbing empires. The last thing they want is competition from the rest of the world. Have no doubt, the minute it is established we are truly dumping this whole bunch of self-satisfying greedy egomaniacs, huge worldwide conglomerates will be queuing up to create business with a highly successful European country which is unshackled from the yoke of the Brussels bureaucrats and able to negotiate on its own terms. Robert S Mueller III, who is investigating possible links between the Trump campaign and Russian officials, has issued more than 100 criminal counts against at least 28 people and three companies. Of that number, at least 10 have been found guilty and are in prison. We aren’t talking about low-profile people either; his lawyers and top advisors are included in that number. About 26 members of his staff have been fired; a number no other President has achieved. The man tweets so many lies, it is impossible to count. So my question is, what am I missing? How is this man still president? He has caved in on shutting down all the government workers. He will never get the money for the wall, yet he’s still there. He’s a racist, homophobic, misogynist yet he’s still there
rambling day in day out on Twitter calling people names like a kid in a school playground. What does he have to do to be kicked out? He is a snake, oil-salesman and a liar with zero empathy for anyone. He even treats his wife like some menial staff member, not even sharing an umbrella with her. He has to go down in history as the worst US president ever. Astonishing! Who do British politicians think they are fooling when walking round a hospital or a school? Does Matt Hancock really think that we believe because he has his jacket off, his sleeves rolled up and his tie tucked in that he has been there cleaning the loos or doing some kind of manual labour? We know their PR advisors are telling them to do it. Why are we treated like idiots? I saw it on the news the other day and there they were, walking around like they had turned up to do a shift when we all know, all they do is pay lip-service to the major problems the UK has with the NHS and schools. If you are going to be filmed walking around, it’s fine with me if you have your jacket on, mate; I know you are doing sweet FA about anything. Jacket off will not fool me or anybody else.

CONSULAR MATTERS LET me start by saying that my friend Peter is quite theatrical in his approach to his legal affairs, so when he came to see me at my law firm to ask for advice on how to distribute his property after his death, he spoke to me in his serious voice. With gestures worthy of a movie lover he told me: “You have to help me to fulfil my last Will.” Such a dramatic appeal can actually be solved by means of a Will. But beware; this is a case in which international laws come into play. Indeed, Peter is a good example of the global world and the cosmopolitan society in which we are lucky to live. Although Peter is Danish by birth and nationality, he has been living in Spain for many years and how could it be otherwise, he has his family divided between Denmark and Spain and obviously worries that if something happened, his heirs could encounter problems regarding the distribution of their inheritance. Indeed, the fact of granting a Will already guarantees that the assets of which he is the owner at the time of

REASSURANCE: Make sure your preferences are documented. his death, may be distributed according to his preferences, which is much better than leaving the law to distribute them according to the de-
fault legal position. However, even if you set out your preferences in a Will, the law establishes rules which must be met under
penalty of invalidating that Will. But it is also in his case, and in the case of any foreigner residing in Spain, a matter complicated by the involvement of the laws of the different countries in which you have your property, family, and income. The European Inheritance Regulations, which came into force some time ago, means any foreign residents in Spain will be subject to Spanish rules for the distribution of their assets after death unless they expressly state through a Will that the inheritance has to be ruled according to their ‘home country’s’ law. And of course, Peter, as soon as I explain this possibility to him, with the same solemnity with which, as I have said, he deals with all his legal subjects, he confirms that he wants his personal law to be applicable, this is the Danish law. However, this option may not be the most appropriate in Peter’s current circumstances so I have to remind him that he has to choose the law which better suits his needs as much as possible because there are many
personal, economic and family variables which should be taken into account before making a decision about it. After weighing up all these variables, we finally agreed that I write a draft of his Will to be granted in front of a notarywhich protects the interests of his daughters and grandchildren in the face of possible claims from his current second wife from whom he is thinking of separating, as well as the possible conflicting claims from his son-in-laws. At the present time his daughters enjoy good relations with their husbands but this might not be the case in the future. Peter invited me to have a beer after the consultation and we went to the bar near to the office, and with a ‘tapa’ of good ‘jamon Iberico’ he told me with great aplomb and seriousness: “Now I’m calm and I can die knowing that everything is where I want it to be regarding my assets,” and this is why I said my friend Peter deserves to be cast in a dramatic role in a movie.

Moffat and Gatiss reveal when Dracula series starts Richard Shanley THE BBC’s adaptation of Dracula will commence shooting ‘very soon,’ according to the screenwriters Mark Gatiss and Steven Moffat. The duo are bringing Bram Stoker’s iconic blood-drinker to the small screen (which will be streamed via Netflix for everyone outside of the UK), having previously rehashed Sherlock Holmes into a show which catapulted leading man Benedict Cumberbatch towards stardom. Claes Bang slip under the cloak and brandish the fangs. With the project known to be in development for a couple of years now, it looks like the Dracula cameras are finally being readied for action. Speaking at the Radio Times Covers Party recently, the writing pair were asked for an update on the situation, with Moffat noting: “We are shooting soon - but obviously, we’re not telling you when. Very soon.” “We’re not telling you where or when,” added Gatiss. “It’s the usual game.” Meanwhile, Moffat has previously admitted that the classic vampire story will be reinvented ‘in a Sherlock-y way, but not in exactly the same way.’

I WAS wondering how much more UK consumers will pay for their food and drinks should there be a no-deal Brexit, Since the UK imports 30 per cent of its food, tariffs could have a meaningful impact on UK household budgets. We ran back-of-the-envelope calculations to estimate WTO tariffs on average UK food and drink spending and found: For each household, a year ’s worth of food and drink tariffs could be equivalent to the cost of two weeks’ worth of food and drink spending. The average UK household (according to Office of National Statistics Family Spending data) could pay an additional £132 for the weekly shop and £78 for takeaways/restaurants each year, or £210 overall. For each £50 of weekly food and drink spending today, a household should budget an extra £1.92 per week or £100 per year. EY
It’s never too late… I REFER to the recent correspondence from Joan Butler (Issue 1751) in which she laments the fact that letters and Christmas cards posted at the beginning of December only arrived in Spain at the end of January. I experienced this ‘phenomenon’ several years ago and after some investigation discovered that there is a very simple, but rather surprising explanation. Having witnessed letters posted in the national post box being mixed together in a supermarket trolley with those in the international box I also discovered the reason for the delay to the Christmas post. Those letters and cards arriving early in Spain are placed at the bottom of a trunk and those arriving later are placed on top. When it comes to delivering the mail those on top are removed first and as a result those arriving first are the last to be distributed. You may remember the slogan many years ago Post early for Christmas however if your letters and cards are destined for Spain it is preferable to post late for Christmas! Peter Sanderson

Poverty risk THE number of Spanish households where children live with unemployed parents has almost doubled since the last recession began, showing little has been done to mend damage the crisis caused. Figures from Spain’s Labour Force Survey revealed there are now 139,000 households with jobless parents and that about one in three Spanish children are at risk of poverty. Spain was third only to Romania and Bulgaria for the amount of children facing hardship. The figures expose the hollowness of assurances that the economy has bounced back. Many in Spain and across Europe remain unemployed or severely underemployed. Those fortunate enough to have jobs increasingly work on zero-hour contracts and within the rising ‘gig’ economy. Oxfam data shows the poorest 50 per cent of Spanish people have seen their incomes fall by 4 per cent since the onset of the last recession in 2008. Meanwhile, the wealth of the richest 1 per cent has grown by 7 per cent. These figures show a tiny number of wealthy people continue to grow rich in a ‘recovery’ where half the population increasingly struggles to provide for itself. It is in reality a recovery enjoyed exclusively by a tiny segment of the population. Children are now paying for faults of an economic system that caused the last crisis with what should be some of the happiest years of their lives. Many were not even alive when the recession began.

LAST week I wrote about self-improvement obsessions which gripped the UK in January like Veganuary, dry January and ‘clothes sobriety.’ January’s got a lot to answer for, hasn’t it? With New Year’s resolutions already starting to founder, we’re then hit by Blue Monday, reckoned to be the most depressing day of the year, and it’s a long time ‘til spring! Well, to this list, add self-help books. The annual chart for audio books recently issued by Audible (part of Amazon), shows that more than a quarter of the top 50 are self-help books, all but two of which are by men. Unlike e-books, bought most commonly by women, audio books are, apparently, the domain of young, urban men. As a woman, I think men in general are in a particularly difficult period due to #MeToo and similar movements, and it’s great they’re seeking to better understand themselves, how to take control of their lives and be as happy and successful as possible. This is only good news for all of us; men and women. Generally, though, isn’t the secret to life being happy with your lot? You don’t really need the latest kitchen/car/holiday/lifestyle. Just go for a walk with the dog, pop into your local

Can he get SIP card? I confess that I am one of those UK false residents living mostly in Spain without any Spanish documentation at all, not even the European Union citizen residence paper. Now with Brexit coming up, I am concerned about health care. I live in the Valencian Region and people tell me I can apply for a SIP card to get health care here and that I only need a certificate of ‘empadronamiento’ in my town and my passport. Is this true? Clean break A thoroughly-cleansed complexion gets rids of the dirt, oil, and sweat which builds up in our pores, leading to bumps, unevenness, and even spots. Cleaner skin will also contain fewer dead cells which sit
on the surface of our complexion, preventing any products we apply afterwards from taking full effect. This means when you cleanse your skin thoroughly, you will actually be receiving more of the benefits of any other serums, creams, or lotions you put on later. She says if we force ourselves to spend more time cleaning our faces, we are less likely to leave out some of the more commonly-missed areas we often ignore, such as around the sides of our nose, under the jaw line or on the temples. The expert says these are often the areas where we suffer from spots, oiliness, or blackheads, because they are never fully cleaned. Finally, she claims apart from all the other benefits of a thorough cleanse, slowing the process down means we give ourselves a short facial massage, which increases blood circulation, creates a glowing complexion, improves collagen levels, and reduces puffiness caused by fluid retention.

Carbs. Lots of them! At the finish line luckily for me there were home-made pies and cakes - if you can’t eat them after doing the distance then there’s no hope! It was great to see at stations throughout the marathon that the right foods were provided; bananas, blueberries, and slices of orange. Great fuel to keep everyone going! Recovery is a crucial part of exercise and nutrition, and is so important to help your body recover and repair especially when you put it through something intensive and gruelling. Protein is key to repair those muscles and carbs are being eaten up at a rate of knots as soon as they are digested! That doesn’t mean fat takes a back seat - it still has a part to play, but choose good fats like nuts, oily fish, olive oil, avocado and cheese. The main downfall of anyone who undertakes exercise in general is not eating enough calories to keep their body going

Your body cannot run on empty!

Exercise may ‘prevent dementia’ THERE could be hope on the horizon for those showing early signs of dementia after a recent study found increased exercise could improve the memory and thinking skills of older people, even those already suffering from the disease. A team of scientists from the Rush University Medical Centre in Chicago, United States, found older adults who were more active than average, performed better in memory and cognitive function tests. During the study, which was published in the Neurology Journal, researchers monitored 450 adults, nearly 200 of whom had dementia. All participants underwent a physical exam, memory test, and cognitive test each year, over the space of 20 years, and at around 89 years old each participant was given a device to monitor physical activity. Scientists used data from these devices to work out an ‘average daily levels exercise’ which they measured in ‘counts per day.’ Final figures showed adults with dementia averaged around 130,000 ‘counts’ per day, while those without the disease averaged 180,000. Dr Aron Buchman, a professor at the Rush department of neurological sciences, told one publication the results showed, ‘people who moved more, had better thinking and memory skills compared to those who were sedentary and did not move much at all.’ He added: “If you took someone in the 75th percentile of physical activity and compared them with someone in the 25th percentile, they had a 31 per cent reduced risk of developing dementia,” concluding: “We found movement may provide a reserve to help maintain thinking and memory skills when there are signs of dementia present in the brain.”

Variations on the Valentine’s theme RED roses, chocolates, a loveydovey card and a romantic candlelit dinner a deux: all perfect ways to show our significant others how much they mean to us as we celebrate Valentine’s Day. Originally a Western Christian feast day, February 14 has become a day dedicated to love in many parts of the world, varying cultures and commercial interests influencing different countries’ take on Valentine’s Day customs. Take Japan for example. It is the ladies who do the buying of the gifts and the chocolates for the chaps in their lives, the guys are not supposed to return the favour until March 14. Japanese women gift different classes of chocolate depending on the nature of their relationship with a man. A romantic partner gets the finest kind, a male friend or work colleague another type. Ghana, one of the world’s biggest cocoa producers, uses the excuse of Valentine’s to boost the economy. February 14 has been declared National Chocolate Day, with all kinds of events and eateries featuring chocolate-themed menus. The Brazilians call Valentine’s Lovers’ Day, but the celebration of love is extended to family too, get-togethers with relatives are common. In the Philippines Valentine’s is a big day for tying the knot, hundreds of couples coming together to get married en masse. Back in Europe, Bulgarian couples traditionally toast their feelings for each other with a glass of local wine on Valentine’s, while in Estonia and Finland the day is about celebrating friendship and all kinds of love. In Germany a pig is seen as a symbol of luck and lust, and on
February 14 couples exchange pig figurines, pictures and chocolate pigs. Also popular are heartshaped ginger biscuits with romantic messages written in icing. The Norwegians have a particularly quirky Valentine’s custom. The gents send rhyming love notes known as ‘Gaekkebrev’ to the objects of their affections, signing them with a set of dots for each letter of their name. If the lady can correctly guess the name of the sender she’ll get an Easter egg at Easter, and if she can’t, she owes the sender an Easter egg instead. VALENTINE’S: Red roses and chocolates are the perfect gift.

Skweeze me Pleeze me FOR people around my age (born in the late 1960’s), our first experience of pop music involved having to listen to your parents records from the 1950’s and 1960’s. The Beatles, The Stones, The Who, or if you were really unlucky, Herman’s Hermits! I was lucky in that when I was maybe four or five my dad brought home the album ‘Slayed by Slade.’ For years it was my favourite album; I played it to death. Yes, I could use the record player at that age! Slade were an amazing proposition. Not exactly pretty boys, a singer who looked old, mad dress sense… but boy could they write and play a tune. Noddy Holder’s voice, Dave Hill’s guitar and hats, Jim Lea’s bass and violin and Don Powell’s drumming all added up to a unique band. Slade ended up being the most successful British band of the 1970’s with six number

SLADE: A unique band. one singles (they were the first band to have three records go straight in at number one). Their popularity waned in the late 1970’s, but in 1980 they were asked to stand in for Ozzy at the Reading Rock Festival. A triumphant performance cemented their place in rock history.
Pause for re-evaluation WELL, February already, and all the partying and associated excesses of the festive season, with their necessary consequences on our bodily well-being, are now a distant memory. In my case however, it wasn’t me, but my computer which suffered apparently incurable indigestion over the New Year/Three Kings period, working non-stop on activities which it alone could comprehend, to the absolute exclusion of anything I might have wished it to undertake; it simply shut down in a sulk whenever I tried to take control. I even tried re-installing the operating system, which gave me a few hours relief, but in a short time it was back in its own world, having no time at all for anything I might have had in mind. Frustrating things, computers, aren’t they?! But as I’ve been struggling with this machine, I couldn’t help but empathise with it, to some extent at least. How often I get sidetracked by my own priorities, spending far too much time on things important to myself without considering the needs of others. How often we all ignore the requirements
and priorities of our Creator as we concentrate our efforts on the comparatively inconsequential needs of politics, pride and personal greed. How frustrated God must feel when our otherwise best endeavours are so often defeated by the ‘what’s in it for me?’ mindset we each so frequently display. How often we who claim to be Christians seem to think, rather like my computer, that we own our lives, so can live how we wish, forgetting the words St Paul wrote to the church in Corinth stating ‘You are not your own; you have been bought at a price.’ So how much we all need to learn from the Christmas story of the Creator, utterly humbling himself to identify with the poorest and weakest in society; to live not for self but only and entirely for the benefit of others, for whose sake he willingly accepted torture and early death. For whatever we think of the Christian faith, the life, death and teaching of Jesus should be an inspiration to us all in his absolute self-giving love for others in all he said or did.

Job done THE final phase of the new Olula del Rio Health Centre has been completed following a €1 million provincial government investment in the project. Almeria Council president Javier A Garcia described the health centre as a ‘real mini-hospital,’ and said it would be a reference point for the region, crediting the Olula mayor for his efforts to turn the project into a reality and ‘improve residents’ quality of life.’ In return, Antonio Martinez Pascual gave credit to the provincial government, commenting, “Without the council it would not have been possible to finish an infrastructure which is necessary and historic for the municipality.” The five-storey building’s services will include clinics, rehabilitation, surgery, emergencies, x-rays and paediatrics.
Arboleas signs up to tourism initiative ARBOLEAS Council has joined the Almanzora Tourism Association and signed the annexation of the Arboleas Tourism Project launched last year by Almanzora businesses. The local authority said it would gradually incorporate its tourist resources into the shared regional tourism project, including the Pedro Gilabert Museum and Santiago Church. The service sector will also be included, ‘to solidify this inland tourism project which will contribute to the economic sustainability of the region,’ said Arboleas mayor, Cristobal Garcia.

NEW BASE: A new Albox HQ for the Medio Almanzora rural school, which is made up of 18 different units in nine different areas.
Permanent HQ for rural school THE Medio Almanzora Rural Public School has a permanent home. Albox mayor Francisco Torrecillas and deputy mayor Jose Campoy inaugurated the school’s new base in the grounds of the Virgen del Saliente school in Albox last week, following a local authority investment of more than €50,000 in the project. Also attending was the head of Virgen del Saliente school, and
the head of nearby Velazquez school, where the Medio Almanzora had been based for more than 15 years. The 1988 decision to establish the Medio Almanzora rural school, or CPR, was prompted by the isolation of some of the region’s outlying areas, in many cases just one teacher giving classes for various levels. Today the CPR is made up of 18 units in nine areas, including
Partaloa, Oria, Cantoria, Las Pocicas in Albox, El Prado in Arboleas and La Concepcion in Huercal-Overa. It is in fact the biggest CPR in Andalucia in terms of the number of municipalities and districts it covers. There are 25 Medio Almanzora teachers; one for each class and seven who divide their time between units to give lessons in English, music, French, religion and PE.

MONICA OLTRA, vice-president of the Valencian Community’s regional government, was in good company when a security guard at the Fitur tourism trade fair reproved her for speaking Valenciano. When the first Borgia pope, Callixtus III, arrived in Rome in 1455, there were grumbles in the corridors of Vatican power that more Valenciano was heard there than Latin. Still, the Italians have much to thank the Xativa-born Borja clan for: they also took Valencian coca with them to Rome, thus giving them the pizza.
Heroic tradition AS in the UK, there is still coal in Spain’s mines but it cannot compete pricewise with imports from Poland or Colombia. Thatcher apart, it is incomprehensible that any government or society could begrudge the money that miners earn although they deserve every cent and penny of it. Despite the government’s efforts to keep Spain’s mines open the last recently closed in Leon, not long before the day when members of the Hunosa Rescue Brigade reached the body of two-year-old Julen. Notwithstanding the advanced technology that was used to locate Julen, in the end eight men - miners and engineers - had
to take it in turns to break through the rock to reach him. Ironically, those eight men are now out of jobs and although they have been applauded for their vital role in the Totalan rescue, how many have given a moment’s thought to the closed mines in Leon, Asturias and Teruel?
Word play THEY’RE at it again. It has been suggested that instead of referring to Los Reyes when referring to Felipe VI and his consort Letizia, it would be less sexist to refer to El Rey y La Reina. So what’s wrong with Los monarcas? Talk about gender-neutral: we’ve got the masculine los and the feminine-looking monarcas with a little bit of everything to keep everyone happy.
Dark Ages vocabulary THE ex-members of Cataluña’s regional government who declared the Unilateral Declaration of Independence on October 27 in 2017 aren’t being tried for defending their rights, as the separatists claim. On the contrary, it’s maintained that they were wresting them away from the 50 per cent of Catalans who do not want independence. All of which is true, but the argument would look infinitely more convincing if they were tried for infringing the Constitution and not rebellion and sedition. Spain might be a democracy but the judiciary’s vocabulary belongs to the Dark Ages.

Seeing red CIUDADANOS leader Albert Rivera has a ‘visceral dislike’ of Pedro Sanchez, the current president of the Spanish government, insiders maintain. He is making it known that any alliances following the municipal and regional elections next May will depend on Sanchez’s presence - or absence. Sanchez, Rivera is saying, is on the other side of the red line beyond which he is not prepared to go. Funny that, when Vox’s leader in Andalucia was not. And the trouble with red lines is that people who draw them often find that they’ve painted themselves into a corner.

Freelance correspondent, London, England LATE 2018 and news filtered out that an extraordinary event was to take place early in the new year. An exceptionally rare figure study by Sir Peter Paul Rubens led the Sotheby’s auction of Old Master Drawings on January 30, in New York. Gregory Rubinstein, Head of the Old Master Drawings department enthused: “This immensely powerful study shows Rubens actually working out the pose of his figure as he goes along. The sense of looking over the artist’s shoulder as he develops one of the most important paintings of his career is incredibly moving.” Peter Paul Ruben’s study of a ‘Young Man with Raised Arms’ offers a fascinating insight into the process by which the artist arrived at the final composition of key figures in the great altarpiece representing ‘The Raising of the Cross’ which Rubens painted for the Antwerp Church of Saint Walburga in 1608.
TECH FOR THE TIMID FROM software to malware to adware to freeware; it’s wearing keeping up with the wares in the techno world. Hardware used to be the DIY tools everyone but me could use with ease. Now it’s the lumps of plastic and metal the average westerner spends 5.9 hours a day using with digital media. We all know it’s software which makes the hardware work. But ‘all the wares’ in today’s IT slang can denote anything ranging from shareware (from developers hoping to shame you into paying) to vapourware (announced prematurely as The Next Big Thing but still just a twinkle on a developer’s screen). There’s malware which can do terrible things to your computer and your bank balance if you pay the ransom, to freeware which is exactly what it says on the tin, to the dubiously-named crapware: all that rubbish software pre-loaded on your new computer and which you will never, ever use, what were they thinking? Adware lets you use the program
The drawing is one of a collection assembled by King William of the Netherlands [1792-1849] and his Russian wife Anna Pavlovna [17951865] who together assembled one of the greatest collections of paintings and drawings in Europe. Among the works were masterpieces by Michelangelo, Raphael, Leonardo da Vinci, Rubens and Rembrandt. The drawing ‘Nude Study of Young Man with Raised Arms’ by Rubens - passed down through the generations privately through the family - was the first drawing of this scale and significance to appear on the market for 50 years. With a distinguished provenance which may be translated to mean we have a high confidence that the drawing is genuine and we know not only who created it but also who owned it from its creation to the present day - the large (491 mm x 315 mm) and powerful drawing of a nearly nude figure of a young man straining every muscle to push a heavy weight above his head, was one of a small handful of similarly monumental figure studies which survived for the key figures in the great altarpiece
representing ‘The Raising of the Cross,’ which Rubens painted for the Antwerp church of Saint Walburga shortly after his return from Italy at the end of 1608. While Rubens created chalk figure studies throughout his career, his drawings of this type were at their most imposing and sculptural in these first years after his return to Antwerp. At its best (as in a MOOC, or a Massive Open Online Course), courseware lets us learn things we could never have dreamed of studying pre-internet. At worst its origina-
tors will take your money, teach you next to nothing and then send you a diploma from the University of Bombay Railway Station. Firmware is what drives your hardware, and feeware is a geeky term for commercial software. For junkware see bloatware see crapware, while fatware is bigger than it needs to be. And for Turing’s sake is there no way to turn off those constant ‘upgrade now!’ pop-ups in nagware? Pushware turns up on your device when you wanted to download something else. Obnoxiousware is just getting silly now. Scumware definitely doesn’t remove stains from the bath. Nor does spamware promote processed meat. Ultimately the most dangerous ware of all is humanware (yes it really is a term). Powered by wetware (the brain and nervous system), it’s also known disparagingly as liveware or warmware or even just meatware. Though where does that leave a vegetarian programmer?

THE concept of a beach buggy really took hold in the California of the 1960’s. The most popular vehicle to be converted into a fun, dune-riding car was the Volkswagen Beetle, with its chassis being used as the base for tens of thousands of examples. Now the Wolfsburg-based car manufacturer is bringing the legend back to life with a modern, clean version of the classic buggy. At the beginning of March, Volkswagen will reveal the first fully electric version of a new buggy. Taking its cues from popular American dune buggies, the concept vehicle is based on the modular electric drive matrix (MEB), which according to head designer Klaus Bischoff demonstrates how multifaceted the new platform is. He said: “A buggy is more than a car. It is vibrancy and energy on four wheels. These attributes are embodied by the new e-buggy, which demon-

strates how a modern, non-retro interpretation of a classic can look, and more than anything else, the emotional bond which electric mobility can create.” True to the original style, this reinterpretation of a proper buggy has no fixed roof or conventional doors, while the free-standing wheels fitted with off-road tyres and open side sills
dominate the overall look. The new MEB concept vehicle shows this fully electric platform can be used for more than just largescale series production models. Like the Beetle chassis of yesteryear, the modular electric drive matrix has the potential to allow the development of low-volume niche series.
The history of recreational vehicles and Volkswagen technology is a long one. From the Beetle convertible and special bodies produced by companies such as Hebmüller and Rometsch, to fully open designs of the kind em-
braced by the Meyers Manx buggy, the Beetle chassis allowed for creative - and sometimes exclusive - custom solutions for decades. Globally, around 250,000 individual vehicles were built as one-offs or at low volumes through to the 1980’s. The latest one-of-a-kind model, the fully electric concept buggy, will be revealed for the first time at the 89th International Geneva Motor Show from March 7 - 17.

ROAD TEST by Nick Fletcher THE Subaru Forester has been a familiar sight on the roads for more than 20 years and over that period has been revised and improved several times, gradually transforming from a versatile four-wheel-drive estate to a smart family SUV which still retains formidable offroad ability. It competes in a crowded SUV sector but has a distinct edge over main rivals with its impressive tough-terrain performance, and is able to tackle rough roads, mud, snow and ice with relative ease. Forester comes in two versions and the entry level XE costs €34,746 (£30,000) and has features such as four-wheeldrive, automatic transmission, cruise control, rear camera and touch-screen infotainment centre. The XE Premium Lineartronic which I recently tested costs €37,638 (£32,500) and adds other features including sunroof, heated leather seats, satnav, powered tailgate, adaptive cruise control, lane-keep assis-

The latest Forester has had a design makeover which adds extra visual cachet and a more upmarket look to the exterior, while the cabin has benefited from an upgrade which has given it a classier ambiance. Seating is very comfortable and supportive and there is plenty of adjustment of the steering wheel and the powered
driver’s seat to get an ideal position. All-round visibility is very good, with the added advantage of a reversing camera. Out and about, the Forester is surprisingly light and easy to drive and it corners with reassuring composure. The ride quality is on the firm side but still comfortable and on smooth roads where it is likely to spend most of its time, it is extremely car-like to drive and handle. With good head and leg room, five adults can be easily accommodated, and there is ample boot space at 505 litres. The boot floor is flat to make loading easier and the rear seats fold to give van-like capacity for larger items. The Forester is not the cheapest family-size SUV in the class, but it is one of the most versatile and few can match its off-road capability and its tough build quality, backed by a five-year warranty.

Even lower emissions from Jaguar JAGUAR has revealed details of its 2019 upgrades to the XF Saloon and Sportsbrake range, with lower CO2 and NOx emissions for its diesel models perhaps the most eyecatching. It has also launched a new Chequered Flag special edition and what Jaguar calls more ‘customer focused’ technology. The 20MY Jaguar XF models also become the first premium executive cars to be declared as available with RDE2-compliant diesel engines. RDE2 (Real Driving Emissions) is the latest and most stringent NOx emissions testing regulation, which all cars must abide by from January 2021. All 20MY Jaguar XF 2.0d 163PS and 180PS rear-wheeldrive variants have been optimised for certification as RDE2-compliant. As a result of other product actions, including fitment of ultra-low rolling resistance tyres, CO2 emissions have also been cut by as much as 8g/km. The XF Saloon 180PS RWD Manual Portfolio, for example, sees CO2 emissions fall from 134g/km to 126g/km.
CHEQUERED FLAG: More ‘customer focused’ technology. Rawdon Glover, MD of Jaguar Land Rover UK, said: “These new diesel engines meet the demanding target, set by the latest European standards, well ahead of schedule. The test results reflect their performance in real-world driving conditions - and Jaguar’s commitment to offering customers outstanding driving dynamics with the lowest cost and impact on the environment.” Jaguar’s latest diesel engines have approximately 25 per cent better fuel economy than petrol engines, produce around 15 per cent less CO2 and emit around the same amount of NOx. The Chequered Flag editions feature a selection of unique
exterior enhancements, handpicked interior design elements and a choice of Jaguar’s efficient and powerful British-built Ingenium diesel and petrol engines. A selection of exterior enhancements distinguish the Chequered Flag models from the rest of the range, including unique badging on the side vents. Further design cues include sport front bumper, Black Pack, body-coloured

THE under-19’s side of Huddersfield Town travelled to Sevilla for training last week ahead of a match with the city’s junior team today (Thursday). The trip saw the junior side of the English club beat local side Real Betis Balompie three goals to one. Huddersfield said the under-19’s showed plenty in their defeat of a “quality side.” Kian Harratt, Huddersfield’s 16-year-old striker, netted a goal for the team after coming on as a substitute. Dean Whitehead’s side took the opportunity to hone their skills while in the south of Spain. Whitehead said the trip would be a “real learning experience” for the younger players and added it was the first such jaunt for many of them. “You have to get used to the travel and representing the Club in a proper way, as well as playing in a different country against players

REAL MADRID edged closer to Barcelona and Atletico in the La Liga table after beating Alaves by three goals to nil in the Spanish capital on Sunday. Karim Benzema scored the first goal about half an hour into the match. Vinicus Junior bagged the second goal in the 80th minute and Mariano got the final one 91 minutes into the match. It comes as Benzema has scored six goals in the last four games. Mariano said he was “very happy” to be back playing again.
