DAVID SERRANO, the owner of the land where two-year-old Julen died in a 72-metre well, has said he will “never forgive” the man who drilled the borehole. Facing possible charges in a negligent homicide investigation, Serrano, who is the partner of Julen’s father ’s cousin, told Spanish media he blames Antonio Sanchez, the man responsible for creating the hole. Serrano said: “I warned [Julen’s family] of the danger there thinking that someone could break a foot. I never thought a child could get in there. I’m never going to forgive that.” He added: “I covered the mouth of the well with two grey concrete blocks and explained that the well had drilled down for more than 100 metres and left there ‘as is.’ “I bought that plot four months ago to grow some avocados and I wanted to bring some horses, so I was looking for water.” The man’s legal team maintained any criminal responsibility should fall on Antonio Sanchez. According to Spanish media, more than 50 homes and around 12 cars suffered damage in El Trapiche, Velez-Malaga, after water poured through the streets from the La Viñuela reservoir. The Eastern Costa del Sol Commonwealth’s insurance company is now said to be assessing claims, while members of the Local Police, fire services, and cleaners join residents in trying to clear away mud and silt from the town’s streets Some residents were reportedly forced to take refuge on the top floor of houses, while the town’s church of San Isidro is said to have been badly affected. Councillors accused of fuel fraud AN inquiry looking into an alleged fuel fraud, claims three councillors filled up their personal cars with town hall diesel. The investigation alleged three Partido Popular (PP) councillors in Torrox ‘put more than 800 litres of diesel’ intended

for municipal vehicles into their own cars. The inquiry claimed the accused made the ‘opaque and unjustified’ transactions between 2015 and 2016. It said it has now passed its conclusions on to Torrox’s town hall.

The town’s mayor, Oscar Medina (PP), denied the accusations, saying the council are due to create rules surrounding fuel use. He claimed: “PSOE and IU councillors also refuelled at the municipal pump.”

Julen’s father speaks JOSE ROSELLO, father of two-year-old Julen who died after falling down a 72-metre borehole in Totalan, has thanked the rescue workers who tried to save his son. Rosello said he and Julen’s mother, Victoria, are coping by staying with friends who are supporting them through their grief. He explained they have tried to encourage him to play Playstation games to concentrate on something else, “because I close my eyes and I see the same thing; the well.” Jose added: “And I curse myself… I curse that day.” The father, who lost his only other son, Olivar, in 2017 to a sudden heart attack, said: “We used to live with my family, but when Olivar died we had to go, because everything was a memory.” He added: “We’ve been staying at a friend’s house for three or four days.” Mr Rosello told Spanish media he and his family had been reading messages of support from around the world. He said: “We have felt very supported. Even if the pain does not leave me, I will be eternally grateful for that.”

Scooter wars RESIDENTS in Malaga have complained about the number of electric rental scooters in the city, saying the vehicles are being marketed in front of major monuments such as the cathedral. The historic centre’s residents’ association said they have submitted a complaint about the ‘invasion’ to the Junta de Andalucia. Safe haven ALMUNECAR Council has congratulated local taxi driver Tomas Valero for his initiative to provide free transport to women who have suffered domestic abuse. The cabbie, who hangs a purple ribbon raising awareness of the scourge from his car, joins other drivers committed to assisting abuse victims. Valero said: “Know you are not alone and if you find yourself in an emergency situation do not hesitate to call me and I will take you to the police, Guardia Civil, or health centre to protect you without charging you anything.” He added: “You can identify me by the purple ribbon on the taxi antenna.” Other cab drivers Antonio Franco, and Abelardo Manzano said they had also been inspired to join the campaign, and Tomas Valero said he has received the support of other colleagues. Almuñecar’s councillor for Social Welfare and Equality, Maria del Carmen Reinoso, congratulated the driver on his work, which was also praised by the local Centre for Women.

Zara expands By Sally Underwood RETAIL giant Zara has announced plans to open a new two-storey shop in Malaga’s Larios Centre. The Inditex group who owns the fashion chain said Zara will expand its current presence in the shopping

centre, offering access from both levels of the store and hosting the brand’s entire collection. The move comes after Merlin Properties, the company which owns the Larios Centre, announced a series of shake-ups to improve the mall’s appeal.

Treacherous weather FIREMEN in Almuñecar were forced to brave extreme weather conditions after high winds brought down a tree on the A-4050 in Torrecuevas last Friday. The cypress tree lay across Carretera de la Cabra which connects the town with Granada, leaving the major road impassable. Pre-election woes THE future of Velez-Malaga’s four-party council coalition is in doubt just four months before local elections on May 26. The ruling alliance between the PSOE, Partido Andalucista, and GIPMTM parties, and independent councillor Jose Antonio Moreno, could be under threat after a PSOE councillor resigned their post. Zoila Martin, who until now had been responsible for the Department of Social Welfare and Equality, said she had given up her post ‘for personal reasons and following disagreements with the mayor, Antonio Moreno Ferrer.’ The politician added she felt the mayor - also a member of the PSOE party - had shown a lack of confidence in her abilities, and claimed she had not been able to carry out her role without interference. Mayor Ferrer responded to Ms Martin’s decision and said: “I imagine we will ask for clarification on this matter, since I believe all councillors have sufficient autonomy to carry out work in their departments.” Francisco Delgado, a spokesman for opposing party Partido Popular (PP), called the situation ‘serious’ and asked for further ‘explanation of the reasons behind the situation.’

Wild boar on tour by Sally Underwood A GROUP of young people from Salobreña have posted a video of a herd of wild boar found wandering through the town’s streets in the middle of the night. The footage, which has been viewed m o r e t h a n 4 , 5 0 0 t i m e s o n Yo u Tu b e , shows a large number of the wild animals trotting along the grassy central reservation of a main road as a small

moped drives past. The boar briefly stop to graze on the ground before using a pedestrian crossing to go to the other side of the road and disappearing along an urban street. The sighting is the second in the town in a month after residents reported seeing w ild boa r throughout the tow n. The Guardia Civil’s environmental branch, Seprona, sent out a search party but were unable to find the animals.

Swine fever fears AN agricultural association in Malaga is asking the Junta de Andalucia to include African swine fever in its insurance cover. The Asaja association claimed although the disease has yet to affect Spain, it has been reported in several other European Union countries. Baldomero Bellido, president of the group, said: “Insurance should cover the needs of the farmer and be able to tackle any adversities that may occur.” He added: “Now we have this disease in

the sector and there is a great concern which must be dealt with.” According to recent reports, the disease has been found in Belgium, while Denmark is putting in place measures to prevent it coming into the country. Carlos Carreira, a veterinarian, told Spain media: “Right now insurance does not cover this disease and we intend to anticipate it, because if it enters Spain, farmers need to be able to keep their jobs to avoid ruin.”

‘Mafia’ takedown ONE of the most violent Italian organised crime groups has been brought down in Malaga. The gang, known as the ‘Marranella clan,’ allegedly stole drugs from other dealers before shipping them to Rome, and was said to be based on Malaga’s coast and in the Campo de Gibraltar. During their operation, police arrested 14 people, 13 of whom are now in prison. The Guardia Civil described the group as, ‘one of the most important and violent criminal organisations dedicated to trafficking drugs at an international level.’

Scaling back by Sally Underwood A LARGE group of wholesalers in Caleta de Velez are boycotting the fish market following a row over discounts. The move has seen more than 12 kilos of fish left unsold after wholesalers refused to buy from the port’s group of 16 vessels when it stopped offering a 5 per cent discount on more than 10 boxes of produce. Wholesalers usually buy around 90 per cent of the catches in Caleta de Velez, however their decision to boycott the mar-

ket has seen small businesses follow suit, meaning almost no fish is currently being sold. The fishing fleet reportedly decided to remove the discount at the end of January because no other ports offer a reduction on large numbers of boxes. Maria del Carmen Navas, president of the Velez-Malaga brotherhood, said: “The boxes have remained unsold. Some boats tried to take them to the fish market in Malaga, but they had to come back because the wholesalers refused to buy fish from Caleta de Velez.”

Couple burn homeless man POLICE are searching for a couple who allegedly set light to a car while a homeless man slept inside, in Malaga City. The man remains in a serious condition at the Carlos Haya Hospital after suffering burns to his chest and legs in the attack. Officers from the National Police said they believe the couple started the fire intentionally in a plot on Calle Zamorano, where ‘many peo-

ple’ come to abuse drugs. They claim the incident took place at around 7.30am on Sunday as the 43-year-old man slept in the abandoned car. According to Spanish media, the man woke up suddenly after feeling heat and smelling gasoline, before getting out of the car as quickly as he could. Police said witnesses saw a couple enter and then leave the abandoned lot at the time of the fire.

I can’t believe it. “When Carl didn’t come home, I knew he was dead, but I needed to find out exactly what happened. I’m relieve d t h a t I n o w k n o w and th a t h e c a n r e s t in peace. “Every day I get memories coming through on Snapchat reminding me of our threeyear relationship. I am staying strong and these photos are keeping the memories of him alive. I will always love Carl, but I’m glad that I now have some closure.” The body of 38-year-old Carr, who went missing after a night out in Cabo Roig last

On the move FIGURES from Spain’s National Statistics Institute (INE) have shed light on where people are moving to in the country, with the Madrid region home to 1.6 million residents born elsewhere. INE data showed that residents from the capital and the surrounding area have also moved to neighbouring provinces in large numbers. A total of 65 per cent of people living in Almeria Province were born there. People born in the provinces of Granada, Barcelona and Jaen made up the largest share of nonnative Almeria residents. Around 59 per cent of Alicante Province’s population are native to it, with people from

Murcia, Madrid and Albacete leading on the number of those born outside. About 55 per cent of the Balearic Islands’ population was born there. The rest came primarily from Barcelona, Granada and Madrid. In Malaga Province people from Cadiz, Madrid and Granada led the way for Spanish residents born outside the area. The province’s population is 65 per cent nativeborn. Three quarters of those living in Murcia wer e bor n i n t he r egi on. Catalan trial delay THE trial of 12 defendants charged in connection with the 2017 Catalan independence referendum and declaration will open a week later than planned on Tuesday February 12, judicial sources said. Spain’s Supreme Court confirmed the date while detailing which witnesses and what evi-

dence would appear in the trial. Hundreds of witnesses have been called, including former Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy and his ex-deputy Soraya Saenz de Santamaria. The former Deputy Prime Minister ran Cataluña after Article 155 was used to suspend

its regional government in 2017. The court has refused to accept written testimonies from UN officials, human rights advocates and intellectuals including the American Marxist Noam Chomsky. Justices said their views were ‘dispensable’ as far as the trial was concerned.

Spanish king in Iraq by Sally Underwood KING FELIPE VI has paid a surprise visit to Spanish troops in Iraq. According to Spanish media, the monarch visited the Gran Capitan base in Besmayah, just outside Baghdad, to boost morale on the ground, as well as pave the way for future Spanish business opportunities as Iraq begins to stabilise. Whilst at the base, troops sang Happy Birthday to King Felipe, who was celebrating his 51st birthday. Thief ruins Brit trip A BRITISH couple have shared a video of a thief breaking into their car while they enjoyed a holiday in Barcelona last August. Rommy Jan and Gayner Nash told one publication they were in the city during a ‘dream summer holiday,’ when the thief was reportedly seen to smash the back window of their €120,000 Range Rover, and make off with their possessions. The couple claim the thief stole Mrs Nash’s Prada handbag and purse, which contained €1,300, before getting into a car parked nearby and driving away.

‘One of the largest’ truffles found in Spain A SPANISH supplier has found one of the country’s largest ever truffles, weighing 750 grammes. The luxury food, labelled the ‘black diamond’ of the restaurant industry, will be served up by

restaurant Goya Gallery in Valencia. The truffle, which was found in the Abejuela area between Valencia and Castellon Province, was handed over to the restaurant’s owner Fernando Navarro. Truffles normally retail for around €1,200 per kilo, however experts believe this specimen could be worth more because it is rare to find one single truffle weighing so much.

Possible Pope trip POPE FRANCIS has said he could visit Spain if the country asks him. During a flight to Abu Dhabi, the Pope told Spanish media he would come to Spain if there was ‘an agreement.’ The Pontiff also told media he had many trips planned for this year, explaining “we must move.”

UK Embassy’s post-Brexit healthcare priority by Dilip Kuner THE UK Embassy in Spain has reassured Britons in Spain that plans to safeguard their right to healthcare in the country are well advanced. The move comes after official UK government advice was published telling people to check on healthcare arrangements in each individual EU country they intend to visit after Brexit. A report on the UK.GOV website says: ‘Travellers who intend to use their European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) must check what the arrangement is with the specific country they are visiting as the card may not be valid. This advice also applies to students studying in the EU.’ It adds: ‘In addition, UK nationals should follow current advice from the government which recommends travellers take out separate travel insur-

AT RISK: The number of children facing poverty has almost doubled since 2008.

Child poverty almost doubles THERE are around 139,000 households where children live with parents who have no income, according to Spain’s Labour Force Survey, almost double the amount in 2008 before the last recession. Data from the survey was cited by the country’s High Commissioner of Child Poverty, Pau Mari-Klose, in a speech to Parliament’s Health, Consumption and Social Welfare Commission. Mari-Klose said it was his job to stop

BREXIT BRIEF BRITISH expatriate campaign groups have praised Members of the European Parliament (MEPs) after they called on senior EU officials to offer guarantees that current rights would be protected. Members of the New Europeans campaign group said EU officials including European Council (EC) president Donald Tusk were responsible for what happened to British people in the bloc after Brexit. It comes as the European Parliament’s Civil Liberties, Justice and Home Affairs Committee is due to begin debating offering guarantees to the 1.5 million British nationals living in the EU. Roger Casale, of New Europeans, said the issue was a test of EU values. His group is campaigning for a new visa to protect British expatriates’ rights and those of EU citizens in Britain. His comments follow 25 British MEPs writing a letter to Tusk and European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker calling for guarantees. Clauide Moraes, a Labour MEP who signed the letter, said ‘fundamental rights’ were at stake. “This is a moral issue,” Moraes said. A British government spokesperson called on the EU to offer guarantees as Britain has done for EU citizens there.

Facing deadlock By Joe Gerrard BRITAIN’S prime minister has vowed to ‘battle for Britain’ when she returns to Brussels to secure amendments to her Brexit deal which EU officials rallied around this week. Theresa May wrote in The Telegraph that she would be armed with a fresh mandate to secure changes to the Withdrawal Agreement. It comes as EU officials and member states again said the current deal remains the best and only option for an orderly withdrawal on Friday, March 29. The opening salvos in May’s ‘battle for Britain’ came in the form of a war of words between officials in London, Brussels and the capitals of the EU’s other 27 member states. GDP growth falls short TOTAL economic output (Gross Domestic Product, GDP) in Spain grew by 2.5 per cent last year, a 10th less than government predictions according to the National Institute for Statistics (INE). Quarterly year-on-year growth amounted to 0.7 per cent between October and December, one-10th higher than the previous three quarters and above government predictions. The value of GDP stood at more than €1.2 trillion, INE data showed. Economy Minister Nadia Calvino said Spain’s economy was growing faster than that of its neighbours.

By Joe Gerrard The growth of 0.7 per cent between October and December was driven by a rise in household purchasing of 0.5 per cent compared to the previous quarter. Government spending increases of 1.2 per cent, the highest since the first quarter of 2015, also contributed to the rise. Gross fixed capital formation, the amount spent by firms in investments on fixed assets, fell by 0.2 per cent after growing throughout the year. Data for different sectors showed

farming grew by 5.3 per cent in the fourth quarter of 2018 while construction rose by 1.2 per cent and services by 0.8 per cent. Industrial output shrank by 0.9 per cent, INE data showed. Exports grew by 1.9 per cent between October and December after falling by 0.9 per cent in the previous quarter. Imports grew by 1.1 per cent during the same period. Last year marked the third in a row where GDP growth has slowed. It grew by 3 per cent year-on-year in 2017 and 3.2 per cent in 2016, according to INE data.

SPANISH Social Security Secretary Octavio Granado has said the government would like companies to help plug gaps in the welfare budget by paying more in contributions. Granado said Spanish companies ought to be matching the level of contributions made by businesses in other European countries. Employer contributions in Spain total around 9.7 per cent of GDP compared to the European average of 10.4 per cent. “We do not want the competitiveness of Spain to be based on low salaries and low prices,” Granado said.

Ebioss CEO steps down THE chief executive of Spanish energy firm Ebioss Luis Sanchez Angrill, has resigned from his position after reaching an agreement with board members as restructuring continues, the company said in a statement.

GROWTH: Sales rose by 2 per cent. SWEDISH fashion store chain H&M saw its sales in Spain grow by 2 per cent between December 2017 and November 2018 to €710 million, the company has said. The results come as the company recorded a total net profit of more than €1.2 billion during the same period, 22 per cent less than the year before. H&M’s chief executive

Karl-Johan Persson said the fall came on the back of a ‘demanding’ year for the company but added it was on the right track. It comes as H&M has been trying to improve logistics in a bid to cut costs and boost profits, the results of which are beginning to bear fruit, Persson added. The firm currently has 172 stores in Spain.

SPANISH distribution company Logista netted a profit of €36 million between October and December last year, 1.9 per cent less than the same time in 2017, while revenues rose by 5 per cent to €2.4 billion according to company data.

Price plan DIA, one of Spain’s largest supermarkets, has announced it will cut prices on 500 of its own-brand products by up to 30 per cent while also seeking to increase capital by €600 mill i o n i n a b i d t o s t a v e o ff competition.

Stock market hits lows THE total value of shares on Spain’s stock exchange stood at more than €38.8 billion at the end of January, the lowest figure for that month in 12 years. Spanish Stock Exchange (BME) data showed the figure was lower than the average for January of more than €84 billion between 2008 and 2018. The total value of trading in 2018 was more than

€587 million, 10.5 per cent less than the year before and the lowest since 2003 according to BME data. Market analyst Pablo Fernandez de Mosteyrin said uncertainty caused by the ongoing trade war sparked by US tariff hikes, Brexit and other factors were dampening trade. The IBEX index has recovered by 6.2 per cent since the start of 2019.

LEAPY LEE SAYS IT OTHERS THINK IT I TRULY do believe, that were I confronted with the individual who coined the word ‘Brexit’ I would happily abandon all my views on peace, love and compassion and take fiendish delight in strangling them with my bare hands! Last week, I took the trouble to count how many times the word was mentioned on Alan Boulton’s Sky News programme; I actually lost count (and the will to live), after 36 utterances. But that, of course, is the whole idea is it not? The ploy of the remoaner’s has always been to make us all so heartily sick of the whole mind-warping, utterly teeth-grinding caboodle, that we’ll accept any result which makes it simply go away (or go their way!). Well I personally think they could well have shot themselves in the foot. The remainers’ petulant plan to create indecision and confusion in the British ranks, and particularly its politicians, has lulled the EU mob into a false sense of security. In their arrogance and growing disdain for the UK, they are beginning to reveal their true colours, issuing statements and opinions which are showing the British public just what they truly do think of us. Well I have news for all of them; the British

People are beginning to question the true ambitions of the European

Union. They are beginning to realise that the forming of a ‘super state’ with its own army controlling all of Europe, in much the same manner as another historical despot attempted in the not too distant past, is no longer quite so ludicrous. Well, with Germany on the brink of recession, Italy and Greece just about ready to

abandon ship, and a whole host of countries who were initially bribed to join the coalition now finding the money drying up, the outlook for the Union’s ambitions are beginning to look just about as bleak as they did 70-odd years ago. As for the scare tactics being deployed by the big companies, threatening to abandon the UK should it leave the EU, let them. Most of them are monopolies, firmly enmeshed in the highly lucrative and elite Euro club. A bunch of profit-mongers, heavily involved in the plot to inveigle the whole of Europe into their greedy money-grabbing empires. The last thing they want is competition from the rest of the world. Have no doubt, the minute it is established we are truly dumping this whole bunch of self-satisfying greedy egomaniacs, huge worldwide conglomerates will be queuing up to create business with a highly successful European country which is unshackled from the yoke of the Brussels bureaucrats and able to negotiate on its own terms. TECH FOR THE TIMID FROM software to malware to adware to freeware; it’s wearing keeping up with the wares in the techno world. Hardware used to be the DIY tools everyone but me could use with ease. Now it’s the lumps of plastic and metal the average westerner spends 5.9 hours a day using with digital media. We all know it’s software which makes the hardware work. But ‘all the wares’ in today’s IT slang can denote anything ranging from shareware (from developers hoping to shame you into paying) to vapourware (announced prematurely as The Next Big Thing but still just a twinkle on a developer’s screen). There’s malware which can do terrible things to your computer and your bank balance if you pay the ransom, to freeware which is exactly what it says on the tin, to the dubiously-named crapware: all that rubbish software pre-loaded on your new computer and which you will never, ever use, what were they thinking? Adware lets you use the program

HUMANWARE MEETS SOFTWARE: Accept or abort? or app in return (they hope) for glancing occasionally at the pop-up ads littering the interface. Groupware is software which lets you share stuff, from documents to collaborative materials. Spyware lurks on your phone or computer and ‘phones home’ your habits to the bad guys, somewhere. Courseware is that wonderful edu-

cational stuff we used to have to stay awake through the night to watch on Open University, but which can now teach us things at a time and place of our choosing. At its best (as in a MOOC, or a Massive Open Online Course), courseware lets us learn things we could never have dreamed of studying pre-internet. At worst its origina-

tors will take your money, teach you next to nothing and then send you a diploma from the University of Bombay Railway Station. Firmware is what drives your hardware, and feeware is a geeky term for commercial software. For junkware see bloatware see crapware, while fatware is bigger than it needs to be. And for Turing’s sake is there no way to turn off those constant ‘upgrade now!’ pop-ups in nagware? Pushware turns up on your device when you wanted to download something else. Obnoxiousware is just getting silly now. Scumware definitely doesn’t remove stains from the bath. Nor does spamware promote processed meat. Ultimately the most dangerous ware of all is humanware (yes it really is a term). Powered by wetware (the brain and nervous system), it’s also known disparagingly as liveware or warmware or even just meatware. Though where does that leave a vegetarian programmer?

Good wares, bad warez CHANGE just one innocent letter in all the wares and it becomes a far darker affair entirely. ‘Warez’ covers the vast slew of copyrighted digital content copied and/or distributed illegally. Pirate a paid office suite, a movie or an MP3 and you’ve joined the renegade warez community. Warez are downloaded at your peril, perhaps freighted with hidden, malicious coding which can wreak havoc on your device. The most-pirated software on warez sites these days is Windows in its various flavours, Microsoft Office, Adobe Photoshop and with no sense of irony at all, antivirus programs. But as the warez industry gets squeezed, the good news is ‘only’ 37 per cent of the software installed on our computers worldwide is now illegal. Guilty as charged m’lud?

LAST week I wrote about self-improvement obsessions which gripped the UK in January like Veganuary, dry January and ‘clothes sobriety.’ January’s got a lot to answer for, hasn’t it? With New Year’s resolutions already starting to founder, we’re then hit by Blue Monday, reckoned to be the most depressing day of the year, and it’s a long time ‘til spring! Well, to this list, add self-help books. The annual chart for audio books recently issued by Audible (part of Amazon), shows that more than a quarter of the top 50 are self-help books, all but two of which are by men. Unlike e-books, bought most commonly by women, audio books are, apparently, the domain of young, urban men. As a woman, I think men in general are in a particularly difficult period due to #MeToo and similar movements, and it’s great they’re seeking to better understand themselves, how to take control of their lives and be as happy and successful as possible. This is only good news for all of us; men and women. Generally, though, isn’t the secret to life being happy with your lot? You don’t really need the latest kitchen/car/holiday/lifestyle. Just go for a walk with the dog, pop into your local

CONSULAR MATTERS LET me start by saying that my friend Peter is quite theatrical in his approach to his legal affairs, so when he came to see me at my law firm to ask for advice on how to distribute his property after his death, he spoke to me in his serious voice. With gestures worthy of a movie lover he told me: “You have to help me to fulfil my last Will.” Such a dramatic appeal can actually be solved by means of a Will. But beware; this is a case in which international laws come into play. Indeed, Peter is a good example of the global world and the cosmopolitan society in which we are lucky to live. Although Peter is Danish by birth and nationality, he has been living in Spain for many years and how could it be otherwise, he has his family divided between Denmark and Spain and obviously worries that if something happened, his heirs could encounter problems regarding the distribution of their inheritance. Indeed, the fact of granting a Will already guarantees that the assets of which he is the owner at the time of

Can he get SIP card? I confess that I am one of those UK false residents living mostly in Spain without any Spanish documentation at all, not even the European Union citizen residence paper. Now with Brexit coming up, I am concerned about health care. fault legal position. However, even if you set out your preferences in a Will, the law establishes rules which must be met under

penalty of invalidating that Will. But it is also in his case, and in the case of any foreigner residing in Spain, a matter complicated by the involvement of the laws of the different countries in which you have your property, family, and income. The European Inheritance Regulations, which came into force some time ago, means any foreign residents in Spain will be subject to Spanish rules for the distribution of their assets after death unless they expressly state through a Will that the inheritance has to be ruled according to their ‘home country’s’ law. And of course, Peter, as soon as I explain this possibility to him, with the same solemnity with which, as I have said, he deals with all his legal subjects, he confirms that he wants his personal law to be applicable, this is the Danish law. However, this option may not be the most appropriate in Peter’s current circumstances so I have to remind him that he has to choose the law which better suits his needs as much as possible because there are many

personal, economic and family variables which should be taken into account before making a decision about it. After weighing up all these variables, we finally agreed that I write a draft of his Will to be granted in front of a notarywhich protects the interests of his daughters and grandchildren in the face of possible claims from his current second wife from whom he is thinking of separating, as well as the possible conflicting claims from his son-in-laws. At the present time his daughters enjoy good relations with their husbands but this might not be the case in the future. Peter invited me to have a beer after the consultation and we went to the bar near to the office, and with a ‘tapa’ of good ‘jamon Iberico’ he told me with great aplomb and seriousness: “Now I’m calm and I can die knowing that everything is where I want it to be regarding my assets,” and this is why I said my friend Peter deserves to be cast in a dramatic role in a movie.

Moffat and Gatiss reveal when Dracula series starts fangs. With the project known to be in development for a couple of years now, it looks like the Dracula cameras are finally being readied for action. Speaking at the Radio Times Covers Party recently, the writing pair were asked for an update on the situation, with Moffat noting: “We are shooting soon - but obviously, we’re n o t t e l l i n g y o u w h e n . Until recently, large numbers of UK expats did zilch to comply with Spanish regulations, imagining that being British somehow made them oh-so-special, and absolved them from applying for essential documentation. Many, who’ve learned not a word of Spanish, are now in a blind panic, scuttling to people like Anne for assistance at police stations and other administrative offices. These centres are no longer as accessible as they once were because of the sheer numbers demanding the residencias they should have applied for upon settling here, and they are now having hissy-fits about delays. Anne wrote: “At the police station yesterday helping somebody get

Since Brexit, I have heard, on several occasions when I’ve returned to the UK on business, people speaking foreign languages among themselves being viciously abused. It’s got to the point now that when British strangers approach me in Spain and speak English, I snap “speak Spanish or @*%* off!”

LIKE with most things in life, the key to glowing, healthy skin starts with thorough preparation. The road to recovery

FUEL: After a gruelling workout, feed your body what it deserves! and burning unwanted fat. The ‘1200 calorie’ average which is a default for many, is wrong for many reasons as your calorie intake should be based on your specific weight, height and age and there is no way a 1,200 calorie diet can be used as a ‘one size fits all.’ If any exercise is undertaken, that needs to be taken into account too. Exercise may ‘prevent dementia’ THERE could be hope on the horizon for those showing early signs of dementia after a recent study found increased exercise could improve the memory and thinking skills of older people, even those already suffering from the disease. A team of scientists from the Rush University Medical Centre in Chicago, United States, found older adults who were more active than average, performed better in memory and cognitive function tests. During the study, which was published in the Neurology Journal, researchers monitored 450 adults, nearly 200 of whom had dementia. All participants underwent a physical exam, memory test, and cognitive test each year, over the space of 20 years, and at around 89 years old each participant was given a device to monitor physical activity. Scientists used data from these devices to work out an ‘average daily levels exercise’ which they measured in ‘counts per day.’ Final figures showed adults with dementia averaged around 130,000 ‘counts’ per day, while those without the disease averaged 180,000. The cost of Brexit?

I WAS wondering how much more UK consumers will pay for their food and drinks should there be a no-deal Brexit, Since the UK imports 30 per cent of its food, tariffs could have a meaningful impact on UK household budgets. We ran back-of-the-envelope calculations to estimate WTO tariffs on average UK food and drink spending and found: For each household, a year ’s worth of food and drink tariffs could be equivalent to the cost of two weeks’ worth of food and drink spending. The average UK household (according to Office of National Statistics Family Spending data) could pay an additional £132 for the weekly shop and £78 for takeaways/restaurants each year, or £210 overall. For each £50 of weekly food and drink spending today, a household should budget an extra £1.92 per week or £100 per year. EY

It’s never too late… I REFER to the recent correspondence from Joan Butler (Issue 1751) in which she laments the fact that letters and Christmas cards posted at the beginning of December only arrived in Spain at the end of January. I experienced this ‘phenomenon’ several years ago and after some investigation discovered that there is a very simple, but rather surprising explanation. Having witnessed letters posted in the national post box being mixed together in a supermarket trolley with those in the international box I also discovered the reason for the delay to the Christmas post. Those letters and cards arriving early in Spain are placed at the bottom of a trunk and those arriving later are placed on top. When it comes to delivering the mail those on top are removed first and as a result those arriving first are the last to be distributed. You may remember the slogan many years ago Post early for Christmas however if your letters and cards are destined for Spain it is preferable to post late for Christmas! Peter Sanderson

Poverty risk THE number of Spanish households where children live with unemployed parents has almost doubled since the last recession began, showing little has been done to mend damage the crisis caused. Figures from Spain’s Labour Force Survey revealed there are now 139,000 households with jobless parents and that about one in three Spanish children are at risk of poverty. Spain was third only to Romania and Bulgaria for the amount of children facing hardship. The figures expose the hollowness of assurances that the economy has bounced back. Many in Spain and across Europe remain unemployed or severely underemployed. Those fortunate enough to have jobs increasingly work on zero-hour contracts and within the rising ‘gig’ economy. Oxfam data shows the poorest 50 per cent of Spanish people have seen their incomes fall by 4 per cent since the onset of the last recession in 2008. Meanwhile, the wealth of the richest 1 per cent has grown by 7 per cent. These figures show a tiny number of wealthy people continue to grow rich in a ‘recovery’ where half the population increasingly struggles to provide for itself. It is in reality a recovery enjoyed exclusively by a tiny segment of the population. Children are now paying for faults of an economic system that caused the last crisis with what should be some of the happiest years of their lives. Many were not even alive when the recession began.

Robert S Mueller III, who is investigating possible links between the Trump campaign and Russian officials, has issued more than 100 criminal counts against at least 28 people and three companies. Of that number, at least 10 have been found guilty and are in prison. We aren’t talking about low-profile people either; his lawyers and top advisors are included in that number. About 26 members of his staff have been fired; a number no other President has achieved. The man tweets so many lies, it is impossible to count. So my question is, what am I missing? How is this man still president? He has caved in on shutting down all the government workers. He will never get the money for the wall, yet he’s still there. He’s a racist, homophobic, misogynist yet he’s still there

rambling day in day out on Twitter calling people names like a kid in a school playground. What does he have to do to be kicked out? He is a snake, oil-salesman and a liar with zero empathy for anyone. He even treats his wife like some menial staff member, not even sharing an umbrella with her. He has to go down in history as the worst US president ever. Astonishing! Who do British politicians think they are fooling when walking round a hospital or a school? Does Matt Hancock really think that we believe because he has his jacket off, his sleeves rolled up and his tie tucked in that he has been there cleaning the loos or doing some kind of manual labour? We know their PR advisors are telling them to do it. Why are we treated like idiots? I saw it on the news the other day and there they were, walking around like they had turned up to do a shift when we all know, all they do is pay lip-service to the major problems the UK has with the NHS and schools. If you are going to be filmed walking around, it’s fine with me if you have your jacket on, mate; I know you are doing sweet FA about anything. Jacket off will not fool me or anybody else.

By that I mean that I am delighted to be sat here overlooking the marina of Marigot Bay cooking and eating Creole cuisine, which is the traditional food in St Lucia.

We have closed The Little Geranium for the week to see an old friend who is a chef on this beautiful island and experience some of his special cuisine. Creole cuisine is a style of cooking originating in Louisiana, United States, which blends French, Spanish, West African, Haitian and German influences as well as influences from the general cuisine of southern America. The best known dishes from this beautiful island are green fig and salt fish, accra (crispy fried fish cakes), fried plantain chips, Callaloo soup (like spinach), pepperpots (spicy meat stews) and breadfruit which is like a starchy potato. But don’t forget about the local rum which is aromatic and sensational. I have a bottle of Spiced Chairman’s reserve rum on

just the name that they call the plantains. It is thought that Columbus may have discovered St Lucia as he sailed through the Caribbean seas in 1502. In the 17th century the island moved to and fro between English occupancy (who wanted it for the sugar cane) and the French so many times that I lost count. The Caribs (settlers) hung on and fought fiercely, but the French and Brits returned again and again interested in their sugar and slavery. In the 19th century it was restored to French control and Napoleon reinstated slavery. In 1967 the Brits helped St Lucia form a government and it became an associated state of the UK, eventually handed back on February 22, 1979 when St Lucia achieved full independence. I was invited to enjoy the Independence Day street par-

ties but unfortunately I have to get home to my restaurant. But I am here to cook and sample some of their national dishes on the build up to their Independence Day. Some of the national dishes like the salt fish have been handed down from the slavery days when bananas were over plentiful. Bananas exceeded sugar as their major export by the 20th century. You can see banana plantations all over the island, with the UK being their largest importer of bananas. The first night we arrived chef Billy Boyle cooked us up a fabulous arrival BBQ with slow roasted suckling pig, jerk chicken, crispy fish cakes (accra) and coconut and pumpkin rice with a variety of salads, passion fruit dressing and various salsas. It was all accompanied by traditional local dancers and fire eaters!

Freelance correspondent, London, England LATE 2018 and news filtered out that an extraordinary event was to take place early in the new year. An exceptionally rare figure study by Sir Peter Paul Rubens led the Sotheby’s auction of Old Master Drawings on January 30, in New York. Gregory Rubinstein, Head of the Old Master Drawings department enthused: “This immensely powerful study shows Rubens actually working out the pose of his figure as he goes along. The sense of looking over the artist’s shoulder as he develops one of the most important paintings of his career is incredibly moving.” Peter Paul Ruben’s study of a ‘Young Man with Raised Arms’ offers a fascinating insight into the process by which the artist arrived at the final composition of key figures in the great altarpiece representing ‘The Raising of the Cross’ which Rubens painted for the Antwerp Church of Saint Walburga in 1608.

The drawing is one of a collection assembled by King William of the Netherlands [1792-1849] and his Russian wife Anna Pavlovna [17951865] who together assembled one of the greatest collections of paintings and drawings in Europe. Among the works were masterpieces by Michelangelo, Raphael, Leonardo da Vinci, Rubens and Rembrandt. The drawing ‘Nude Study of Young Man with Raised Arms’ by Rubens - passed down through the generations privately through the family - was the first drawing of this scale and significance to appear on the market for 50 years. With a distinguished provenance which may be translated to mean we have a high confidence that the drawing is genuine and we know not only who created it but also who owned it from its creation to the present day - the large (491 mm x 315 mm) and powerful drawing of a nearly nude figure of a young man straining every muscle to push a heavy weight above his head, was one of a small handful of similarly monumental figure studies which survived for the key figures in the great altarpiece

representing ‘The Raising of the Cross,’ which Rubens painted for the Antwerp church of Saint Walburga shortly after his return from Italy at the end of 1608. While Rubens created chalk figure studies throughout his career, his drawings of this type were at their most imposing and sculptural in these first years after his return to Antwerp. At this key moment in his artistic career Rubens made figure studies which are judged to be truly Michelangelesque in their grandeur suggesting the visual visceral impact of Michelangelo’s Sistine Chapel in the Vatican, Rome and Ruben’s own magnificent Baroque ceiling at the Banqueting House in Whitehall Palace, London with its three principal paintings ‘The Apotheosis of James I,’ ‘The Union of the Crowns’ and ‘The Peaceful Reign of James I’ completed and installed in 1636. With a life story and a historical context which is endlessly fascinating, the draw to Sotheby’s auction in New York City on January 30, 2019 was to prove irresistible. FOR people around my age (born in the late 1960’s), our first experience of pop music involved having to listen to your parents records from the 1950’s and 1960’s. The Beatles, The Stones, The Who, or if you were really unlucky, Herman’s Hermits! I was lucky in that when I was maybe four or five my dad brought home the album ‘Slayed by Slade.’ For years it was my favourite album; I played it to death. Yes, I could use the record player at that age! Slade were an amazing proposition. Not exactly pretty boys, a singer who looked old, mad dress sense… but boy could they write and play a tune. Noddy Holder’s voice, Dave Hill’s guitar and hats, Jim Lea’s bass and violin and Don Powell’s drumming all added up to a unique band. The city has its own small airport but there is also a high-speed train service that links Girona to the Catalan capital of Barcelona, so it makes a perfect destination for a quick day trip.
