Julen case: Landowner insists he covered well THE owner of the plot of land in the Sierra de Totalan where two-year-old Julen died la st we e k c l a i ms h e covered the borehole with two concrete blocks. The Guardia Civil told a Malaga court investigating the case witness statements about how the hole was sealed contradict each other. According to Spanish media, police claim the owner of the land where Julen fell down a 72-metre prospecting hole insists he covered it with concrete blocks, a claim backed by Julen’s father. The man responsible for digging the hole, Antonio Sanchez, reportedly told police he covered it with a 15kilogra m st o n e h i m s elf, however. The st a t e m e n t s wi l l b e used during the negligent manslaughter investigation currently underway in a Malaga court. According to Spanish media, officials will examine two leads; whether the owner of the land Julen died on, or the man who bored the hole we r e n e g l i g e n t , an d how Ju l e n c a m e t o b e buried under large quantities of soil after his fall. The n e g l i g e n t man slaughter charge carries a s enten c e o f o n e t o fo u r years in prison for serious cases, or a fine in more minor instances.

By Joe Gerrard BRITAIN’S Prime Minister is seeking changes to her and the EU’s draft Brexit deal after Parliament backed her in votes on Tuesday while Brussels said renegotiations were not an option. Theresa May told MPs the government would “redouble” its efforts to extract further concessions from the EU on the Northern Irish backstop. The House of Commons backed her but called for a no-deal scenario to be taken off the table and for the backstop to be replaced. Changing the agreement would not be easy because of Brussels’ ‘limited appetite’ for renegotiation, May said. She has until February 14, the day until the next vote on her deal in Parliament, to secure changes. May said: “This House has made clear what it needs to approve a withdrawal agreement.” The Prime Minister held talks with Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn yesterday (Wednesday). Corbyn said her handling of the situation had so far been “shambolic.” Michel Barnier, the EU’s chief Brexit negotiator, said the bloc was united around the existing agreement. EU Council President Donald Tusk said: “The backstop is part of the withdrawal agreement, and the withdrawal agreement is not open for renegotiation.”

OFFICERS from the Guardia Civil have released the first witness accounts of how Julen’s family say the toddler came to fall down a borehole measuring 25-centimetres in diameter. Police told the Malaga court investigating Julen’s death how statements from various family members at the scene all agree Julen fell down the hole as he played on the plot of land in the Sierra de Totalan. According to accounts, the group, made up of Julen, his parents Victoria Garcia and Jose Rosello, Jose’s cousin, as well as her husband - the land’s owner - and their young daughter, arrived at the plot at around 1pm on Sunday, January 13 for a family day out. The land owner claimed when the group arrived he told the others about the prospecting hole and said he had covered it with two concrete blocks. The man and Jose told police they began making paella while the two women watched the children. Around three-quarters of an hour after arriving, the land owner claimed he heard Jose shout, ‘Julen.’ He said when he looked over the concrete blocks had been moved. He told police he then put his wife and child into their car to go to their neighbour ’s house and ask for help, as well as stopping several cars and asking them to call emergency services. Julen’s father told police he had been throwing wood into the fire for the paella as he watched his son, between 10 and 15 metres away from him, run towards the well. Jose claimed he ran to catch the boy but

Natural beauty THIS picture of a flamingo taking flight was shot in southwest Spain’s Doñana National Park which will be in the spotlight on Saturday when the world marks World Wetlands Day. The National Park lies in the Andalucian province of Huelva and also crosses into Cadiz and Sevilla. It covers an area of 543 square kilometres, 135 of which are protected. Doñana is in the Guadalquivir River delta which flows into the Atlantic Ocean, creating its many marshes

and wetlands. Its level of biodiversity is one of a kind in Europe. The National Park is home to a myriad of animal species including fallow deer, Spanish red deer, wild boars, European badgers and the endangered Iberian lynx. There are also several bird species that live or migrate there from Africa, including flamingos, mallards, Egyptian vultures and the endangered Spanish imperial eagle. Labour laws POLITICIANS at Velez-Malaga Council have approved a series of measures to improve work conditions. In consultation with union reps, officials have agreed to reorganise work hours, increase pay, and create jobs. Councillor for Human Resources, Joe Antonio Moreno Ocon, explained: “We are complying with the commitment by the current council team to respond to our employees’ needs

and improve their work environment.” The politician added the current legal working week of 37.5 hours would be restructured to require 35 hours of mandatory attendance and 2.5 hours for preparation and training. Pay would also increase by 2.25 per cent from this month. In addition, officials will create 12 new, publically-advertised positions and 14 internal promotions.

AXARQUIA HOSPITAL: One union condemned a lack of X-ray facilities.

Outcry over broken X-ray machine By Sally Underwood A HEALTH union has criticised the condition of Axarquia Hospital’s X-ray machine, which it claims has been broken for a year.

CSIF Sanidad Malaga are demanding the machine in the hospital’s emergency centre is replaced after doctors have been forced to refer patients to other departments for tests. The union claimed: ‘[it] has

been damaged for almost a year without management committing to repairing or replacing it.’ The body alleged the hospital had made no plans to fix the machine, leading to increased waiting times.

Missing man SPANISH police announced they are urgently looking for a missing man who could be in Axarquia. According to reports, 58-year-old Felix Javier Perez Alamino, who went missing in Malaga, is in need of urgent medical attention. Police said the man is around 1.80 metres tall, thin, with grey hair. Perez Alamino, who also walks with difficulty and is missing his upper teeth, was reportedly last seen in Axarquia and Motril. Police hiring furore FOLLOWING a furore over hiring procedures within Rincon de la Victoria’s police, officials have announced they are advertising nine roles. Five of the positions have been published in the Official Province Gazette (BOP), while a further four will be internal promotions. Earlier this month, a union demanded an inquiry into the selection process used to hire members of the Local Police in Rincon de la Victoria. The CC OO labour union added its name to a list of political groups demanding answers over a recent statement made by Local Police chief Francisco Casanova. The controversy began in October after the head of the Local Police, Francisco Casanova, allegedly ‘made veiled references to alliances within different Local Police selection processes and criticised a lack of qualifications,’ according to the group. The council dismissed the claims, however, saying the processes have been ‘clean, using high-ranking professionals from the Local and National Police’ adding, ‘if they have legal doubts, go to court.’

NEW TEAM: Five new firefighters have joined the Almuñecar force.

New recruits THE Almuñecar Fire Service has revealed its five new recruits. The five new firefighters, Jose Manuel Rivas Franco, Francisco Manuel Matias Rivas, Jose Luis Varela Taboada, Jose Antonio Cabrera Alaminos, and Juan Antonio Alba Fernandez, were sworn in to their new positions by Trinidad Herrera, mayor of Almuñecar. Councillor for Security, Juan Jose Ruiz Joya, said: “With this we take a step further in professionalising the service.”

After an inauguration ceremony at Almuñecar Town Hall, the councillor congratulated the new firefighters, wishing them ‘the greatest of luck.’ Councillor J o y a s aid : “ With the s e ne w ro les w e in ten d to c re a te a co-ordinator responsible for each service, with which we can improve and make it more professional.” He added: “From the beginning we made it clear we had to improve the workforce and services.”

Fire guts workshop FIREFIGHTERS in Almuñecar have battled flames which gutted a painting workshop in Torrecuevas. The incident occurred after a fire broke out in the basement of a house in the neighbourhood. Emergency services received calls from residents who spotted smoke coming from the building. Three members of the Almuñecar fire brigade battled for more than an hour to extinguish the blaze while flammable chemicals in the workshop hindered their efforts.

Unions criticise police head THREE unions in Velez-Malaga have criticised the head of the Local Police, Antonio Moreno Ferrer. The groups announced they will begin demonstrating against alleged breaches of commitments from tomorrow (Friday). Unions claim Antonio Moreno Ferrer, who is also mayor of Velez-Malaga, has failed to fulfil several promises on work conditions, and is now restricting the rights of officers, as well as increasing insecurity amongst his employees and members of the public.

According to the organisations, the politician has often allowed just one patrol vehicle out on night shifts, leading to an alleged rise in nighttime vandalism. The unions also accuse Moreno Ferrer of getting rid of several Local Police roles. In addition, the SIP-AN, UPLB-A and UGTFeSP trade organisations have criticised a lack of funding for resources and personnel, as well as accusing the mayor of restricting the rights of officers to take their holiday days.

No interest NO company has put its name forward for a tender to carry out works to restart Velez-Malaga’s tram service. The contest to find a company for the €1,936,000 project has been cancelled after the council revealed not one company had bid for the contract. The town hall will now restart the process and invite various companies to take part in new bidding, maintaining the same rules set out in the previous tender. Earlier in January, politicians in Velez-Malaga came together for an ‘extraordinary’ council meeting over the future of the town’s tram service. The meeting, called by the opposition Partido Popular (PP), was used as an opportunity to question the council’s handling of the reopening of the tram.

Officers from the National Police in Malaga said they were able to arrest the man and recover several stolen items after seeing C C T V i m a g e s o f t h e m a n ’s d i s tinctive hand tattoo. Police arrested the 34-year-old Spanish man on suspicion of robbing the garages and storage containers in the centre of Malaga. They claim the suspect had used force to access the parking and storage areas of several communities before robbing them. During their investigation, officers said they located a piece of land, which seemed to have been abandoned, finding several items from the alleged robberies and other suspect goods. Police claimed they recovered 14 bicycles, televisions, 12 computer monitors, skis, tools, and other items. Officers also arrested a 37-yearold Spanish woman, thought to be

Pharmacist arrested over growth hormone thefts by Sally Underwood POLICE in Malaga have arrested a pharmacy technician over claims she was stealing human growth hormones from the hospital she worked in. The 32-year-old woman has been released pending trial on suspicion of theft and crimes against public health after it was claimed she sold the drugs on the black market.

Officers from the National Police alleged the woman used her role in a Malaga hospital to steal the drugs from the dispending area before selling them. Officers began investigating after the hospital complained of thefts from its pharmacy service between February and June 2018. Police claimed the thefts coincided with the days the woman was at work. They said the medicines had been stored in a restricted zone and were locked away.

€45.1m budget through RINCON DE LA VICTORIA Council has managed to push through its 2019 budget after receiving backing from two independent councillors. The accounts, which will include €4 million worth of local investments, were voted through despite strong opposition

Fake marriages POLICE in Cuenca, central Spain, have brought down a gang allegedly arranging 30 fake marriages between Asian nationals and EU citizens to acquire residency. National Police arrested seven people thought to be responsible for bringing in women from the EU who would pretend to be married to Asian citizens and help them live in Europe legally. The reported head of the group, an Indian citizen living in Cuenca, also expanded his criminal ring into Motilla del Palancar, where he recruited another man to help. The group are suspected of charging between €12,500 and €15,000 for their crimes.

A problem THE European Commission has announced it will take Spain to court over environmental concerns about the Doñana National Park in Andalucia. The body claims Spain is not adequately protecting this wetland, named a World Heritage Site. A letter states: ‘The diversion of large amounts of water both for agriculture and for the needs of local tourists is depleting the water table.’ The EC claims the water used from Doñana to grow strawberries and other fruits is causing an environmental problem.

Diamond theft A PRISONER in Valencia has been convicted for his part in the ‘biggest theft in history.’ One member of a gang accused of stealing €63 million of diamonds was sentenced to up to seven years in prison by a court in the Netherlands after being arrested in Valencia Province two years ago. He is one of six sentenced involved in the robbery in 2005. The main suspect, Errol HV, was handed a seven-year sentence, while a getaway driver, Marlon D, received six years.

Bank boss trial THE trial into Rodrigo Rato, the former head of a major Spanish bank accused of fraud, will resume on Monday following a three-week break after the prosecutor fell ill. Rodrigo Rato, currently serving a four-and-a-half

year sentence for misusing funds when he was boss of both Caja Madrid and Bankia between 2010 and 2012, led the financial giant Bankia when it was floated on the stock market in 2011.

He joins 34 other individuals and clients accused of misleading investors, many of whom lost money. Rato, 69, faces five years in prison if found guilty of falsifying financial reports.

Little girl, 3, cancer free after treatment in Barcelona by Tara Rippin A TODDLER is reportedly free from a rare and aggressive form of cancer after her parents sold their home and sought celebrity help to fund pioneering treatment in Barcelona. Ka’iulani Forbes, three, was diagnosed with ganglio-neuroblastoma two years ago, and after exhausting all treatment options in her home country, New Zealand, parents Moana and Manihera, began looking overseas for hope. They believed Ka’iulani’s only chance of survival was to travel across the world and take part in a clinical trial in Barcelona, at a cost of €265,000.

Top jobs for women deal SPAIN and Morocco have signed a pact which commits both countries to get more women into leading

civil service roles. Meritxell Batet, Spain’s Territories Minister, signed the deal with her Moroccan

opposite number Mohamed Benabdelkader. The deal states that both Spain and Morocco will

work to get women into higher roles of responsibility in public services over the next five years.

The only obstacle was raising the cash, so the Forbes’ sold their home in Hamilton, and launched an appeal to help save their daughter’s life. A DJ, Dom Harvey, from The Edge radio station in New Zealand, immediately got on board, running five marathons in five days and giving the family’s plight continual airtime. The combined efforts paid off and the target was reached, allowing the family to travel to Barcelona, aware that there was only a 20 per cent chance the trial would get Ka’iulani into remission. They stayed in Spain for four months, and on returning to New Zealand, appeared on The Edge last week to share their great news with listeners, revealing that ‘basically, she’s out of the woods.’ Dad, Manihera, said doctors in Barcelona explained the tumours would stay in her body, but they expect them to ‘stay dead’ while Ka’iulani grows. As she gets older, the rest of her body should grow around the tumours. The family continue to raise funds and awareness about child cancer.

Brett Bridgen reportedly used online banking to send money into his personal account the day before travelling to the Spanish island. The offender appeared at Liverpool Crown Court last week and received a 17month jail sentence. Prosecutor, Jamie Baxter, said that the accused had visited his granddad, 73, at his home in Cheshire, on April 24, 2016 claiming he was owed a birthday present and was planning to fly to Ibiza the next day. Two days later the victim received a call from the fraud action department reporting that thousands of pounds had been transferred between a savings account and a current

account before being sent to Bridgen’s bank account, without authorisation. According to British press reports, the offender has been jailed in the past for stealing from his grandfather. Liverpool Crown Court was told that Bridgen’s grandfather has since found it difficult to sleep at night and to trust people as his relationships within the family had been strained. Judge Brian Cummings reportedly said the offence was the ‘most personal kind of fraud’ and that it has caused a ‘serious detrimental impact on the victim.’ Paul Wood, defending, described Bridgen as being at a low point in his life when he committed the fraud. He was given a 13-month sentence for fraud and a fourmonth sentence for committing an offence while on bail.

By Julie Day GUARDIA CIVIL have praised an expat who rushed to the aid of an elderly British couple who were caught in a gas explosion. Without the swift actions of John Frank and his Norwegian friend Roger the consequences of the frightening Monday afternoon incident could have been much worse, say police. The victims, both in their 70’s, were seriously injured due to the gas explosion in their bungalow. According to the Provincial Fire Brigade, it is likely that an accumulation of butane gas in the kitchen caused the accident, and as the couple had only just purchased two new gas bottles, this theory is well supported. The impact of the 2.30pm explosion was so strong that it caused the windows and doors at the back of the property to blow out and shatter, with the frames crumpling at the same time. First on the scene were neighbour John and Roger, who were at home at the time. “On hearing the explosion, we rushed round to Shirley and Brian’s,” said John. “The first thing we

saw was Shirley, who suffers from dementia, just standing there in the middle of the room in shock. Her clothes were all burnt and had fallen off and her body was totally black. She looked like a zombie from a film and had suffered particularly serious burns to her legs. “Brian, who’s got cancer, was covered in glass and blood.” Roger immediately called the emergency services, who after several minutes of questions about the incident, sent Torrevieja firefighters, Local Police, Guardia Civil and ambulance services round to the bungalow, which is located in Calle Segovia in the La Mata area of Torrevieja. In the meantime, after turning off the gas and electricity, John and Frank proceeded to fill buckets with water and managed to put out the clumps of fire that were dotted about the kitchen and front room. The couple’s 12-year-old Westie also suffered serious burns and is now recovering after being treated by the Clínica Veterinaria San Antón in Guardamar. “Sammie, the dog, looked like burnt toast,” said John, “so we put him in the shower and cleaned him up before he was taken away to be treated.”

Asylum applications break records THE number of people who applied for asylum status in Spain stood at around 55,600 last year, the highest amount since records began according to UN data. Figures from the UN’s High Commissioner for refugees (UNHCR) showed Venezuelan applicants made up around 40 per cent of the total, with about 20,000 applications made. That is almost double the amount made in 2017. Colombian applications came second with 8,700, about 20 per cent of the total. Syrians came third, making up around 5 per cent of the total with around 2,500 applications. The number of applications from Syrians fe ll c ompare d to 2017 when i t st ood at around 4,200. The UNHCR estimated that there would be around 78,500 applications placed this year, according to current trends.

Fuel prices THE Spanish Ministry of Industry, Trade and Tourism publishes regular details of the cost of fuel on its Geoportal Gasolineras website. The latest information shows that there is a vast disparity between prices in different regions with the cheapest petrol costing €1.06 per litre (compared to up to €1.308 in some parts of the country) and diesel at €1.019 (compared to €1.25). The cheapest fuel is generally found in service stations in Cataluña although there are also good prices in parts of Huesca and Tarragona.

Circus animal ban for Madrid

UNJUSTIFIED: The use of wild animals (inset) in circuses. TRAVELLING circuses featuring wild animals look set to be banned in Madrid City. The city council has approved an amendment to animal welfare by-laws acknowledging circus facilities do not meet the ‘physiological, mental and social condition needs of animals’ or respect animal welfare. The decision is based on a recommendation by the European Veterinary Federation (FVE), adopted in June 2016, which warns the needs of ani-

mals ‘cannot be met in a travelling circus, especially with regard to accommodation and the possibility of expressing natural behaviours.’ It adds the use of ‘wild animals is unjustified’ and has ‘little or no educational, conservationist or economic value’ while at the same time ‘violating’ the universal declaration of animal rights in 1987. This states that every wild animal has the right to live free in its own natural environment.

Prior to approving the amendment, the city council carried out an online public consultation and met with representatives from several animal protection associations. The move must now be ratified by the Plenary in March or April. The use of wild animals in circuses is already prohibited in the provinces of Valencia, Murcia, Galicia, Cataluña, Cueta, La Rioja and the Balearic Islands.

Whale tragedy by Tara Rippin EXPERTS believe a 10-tonne common fin whale, which died on Mallorca’s Cala Millor beach at around 4am on Sunday, may have been weakened by an infection before being struck by a boat. The 15-metre long mammal showed signs of severe weight loss and severe external wounds. Luis Parpal, leading the team of professionals carrying out a post mortem, told Spanish press that early indications suggest an infection, ‘toxicological or biological, it’s still unknown, had weakened the specimen, leaving it adrift’ and that ‘a boat later hit the whale causing the wounds.’ Parpal, manager of the Official Association of Pharmacists of the Balearic Islands

(COFIB), explained the team wants to find out if there is an infection that affects cetaceans in general that could rule out toxicology caused by plastic or microbiology interference. While a technician from the Palma Aquarium pointed out that lately there are ‘more cases of death than normal,’ particularly in the northern part of Spain. As such, the findings of the post-mortem will be shared with centres across the country to try to determine the cause of the rise in strandings of this marine species. An emergency tent was installed on the beach and a large plastic canvas placed around the dead whale while the examination was carried out, and security forces were on site to protect the scene. It is hoped scientists will be able to complete their investigation this week.

Polic e found the 64-year- ol d’s body and t hose of several dead dogs floating in the water in rural Ripoll after the alarm was raised when the hunter did not return home. Officers believe the man either fell into the pond while trying to help his animals - who are believed to have accessed the site through a hole in the fence - or gone into the water voluntarily to try to help them to shore.

Couple arrested POLICE found a young woman locked inside a cupboard, allegedly by her boyfriend, 19, after responding to reports of violence at the property in Pontevedra. The 20-year-old told officers she was locked up regularly as a form of ‘punishment.’ When Local Police tried to arrest the male, his girlfriend allegedly punched the officer, and they were both detained. The woman was later charged and released, while her partner was remanded in custody for imprisonment and an additional charge of possession of hashish.

Migration plan and disunity BRITAIN’S Home Secretary has unveiled the government’s back-up plans for EU citizens living in and coming to the country in a no-deal scenario. Sajid Javid said EU migrants coming into Britain after Friday, March 29 would be allowed to stay for up to three years in the event of a nodeal. That arrangement covers an interim period, with EU citizens then having to apply under a European Temporary Leave to Remain scheme once free movement ends. Britain’s immigration system is then set to transition to a ‘skills-based’ model in 2021, which EU citizens will have to go through to remain in the country. The announcement comes as separate research showed Britain has become a more divided country politically since the 2016 referendum. A total of 69 per cent of respondents to the Edelman Trust poll said they were ‘angrier’ about the state of British politics and society since the referendum. Around 65 per cent said they thought Britain was on the wrong track, with the pollsters saying it showed Britain was becoming a ‘disunited Kingdom.’

France-Spain pipe setback SPAIN’S market regulator has rejected the first phase of a planned gas pipeline between the two countries saying it does not serve market needs. The National Commission of Markets and Competition (CNMC) and France both rejected part-one of the Midcat project. SPANISH bank Santander has said it is going to close 140 of its British branches and cut 1,270 jobs due to the rise in online banking. The bank is set to talk with unions over the closures.The bank’s British arm said branch transactions had fallen by 23 per cent during the last three years as the use of its online service has grown. Susan Allen, head of retail banking at Santander UK, said: “The way clients relate to the bank has changed dramatically in recent years.”

The new levy, dubbed the ‘Google Tax,’ taxes companies 3 per cent on online advertising, brokerage and the sale of data and metadata.

A ghostly visitation LEAPY LEE SAYS IT OTHERS THINK IT WELL, I’ve just appeared in a haunted hotel. No not as an apparition (yeah, yeah!) Just as this old, boring pop-singing mortal I’m afraid. The hotel in question is situated in the depths of the beautiful, but somewhat foreboding New Forest. It’s called the Foxlease. Parts of this imposing edifice date back to the 16th century and it abounds with stories of unexplained noises and apparitions, which over the years have manifested both to its staff and residents alike. All right, all right, I can hear the snorts of derision from here. No, this is not some establishment trying to sell rooms on the backs of paranormal spirits created by some dubious PR exercise. On the contrary, because the main core of their business is centred on Guides, Scouts, and schools whose students take camping holidays and ‘outward bound’ courses in the summer, they are trying to keep the whole thing as quiet as possible. As a spiritualist and staunch believer in such things, I was more than a little interested to find out as much as I could about their numerous supernatural experiences.

SCARY: Would you have the courage to stay the night? Subsequently, on further investigation of the hotel I found that a number of the restricted areas (purposely not used as guest accommodation!), were extremely spooky indeed. In fact, while I was there, the landlord took a small party on a guided tour of these areas. Within a few minutes, one young lady rushed back into the lounge, and shaking noticeably, told me she was frightened to even walk down one of the corridors! The staff and landlord were actually extremely ‘matter of fact’ and quite nonchalant

about the whole situation. An acceptance I had not actually experienced before, and did indeed lend a whole new authenticity to their ghostly claims and stories. Apparently none of them lock their bedroom doors at night, they explained this was a precaution enabling them to escape in a hurry should they feel the need! All had heard the noise of footsteps and children talking and crying. The landlord told me last summer he was having a drink with a friend in the garden, when the friend sud-

denly froze and went deathly white. When he asked him what the matter was, he said he’d just seen a woman walk out through the wall of the hotel! Apparently, a few years ago, without them naming the hotel, Channel Five’s TV paranormal ‘Ghostbusters’ spent a few nights filming there. They later reported, in their opinion, there were eight ghostly ‘guests’ residing on the premises. Sometime later the landlord invited the Royal Navy paranormal squad (yep they really do exist, mainly to investigate reports of ship haunting) to look in to their claims. This team had no connection or links with the TV series, but lo and behold, after their overnight stay, they too reported they had detected eight spirits in the hotel! Whoooooo! Well be that as it may, and having actually seen a (never forgotten) manifestation at the age of four, I am not a sceptic and my mind is always totally open to all things both spiritual and mortal. I have to confess however, despite their kind invitation, we declined their offer to stay the night! TECH FOR THE TIMID IMAGINE the distress message from a friend last month, stranded on a Greek island without her passport, her money and her phone. Could I, would I, head for the nearest Western Union to help? Except I had been having coffee with her that very morning. Half a world away from the Greek Islands. As the Mafia tried to teach Hugh Grant to say in ‘Mickey Blue Eyes’: ‘Fuhgeddabahtid!’ Stealing our friend’s previous phone had unleashed the bad dudes on her data, hence the spurious message to everyone in her contacts list. Nobody responded, which either says a lot about how scam-savvy we all are, or perhaps she needs better friends. Being hacked can change your life, as the 2013 movie ‘Identity Thief’ portrayed so graphically. The hero is ruined financially, loses his job, is falsely identified as a drug dealer, and is arrested for missing a court date for a crime he didn’t commit, all from online identity theft. BE AWARE: Have you been ‘pwned?’ over to the instructions alongside to check safely and easily whether your own e-mail accounts are secure, just for starters. I just did and alarmingly, two of the three e-mail accounts I use have been compromised, one of them by three different sets of hackers. How does that happen? Let me not

name the ways, there are simply far too many and increasing by the day. One of the most recent, if you’ve ever stayed at a Marriott hotel anywhere in the world, in November they admitted ‘losing’ 500 million customer records to hackers. Oops. Yahoo had a breathtaking one billion accounts compromised in 2016.

LinkedIn released 165 million account-holders’ data into the wild. Sony, Tumblr and Evernote have all been breached and the list goes on. And on. ‘Sextortion’ is the newest twist in this never-ending story. Hackers with stolen passwords ambush their victims, showing the passwords as ‘proof’ they have records of porn site visits, which they will release to family and friends if ransoms are not paid. According to the ‘Have I been pwned’ website (see alongside), my own far less salacious data went public thanks to breaches of Dropbox, an online ‘spambot’ in Holland, and a South African cinema club I joined in another life. As the site specifies, the stolen data includes my birth date, my e-mail address, my gender, my name, my passwords, my phone numbers, my physical address and my spoken languages. All that seems missing is my underwear size. At least until M&S gets hacked.

How secure is your e-mail? IS your e-mail still secure, and with it, your registrations on sites which have recorded that e-mail address? One simple check may help. Being ‘pwned’ (pronounced ‘poned’ but your mileage may differ) is a streetwise corruption of being perfectly ‘owned.’ Hence the name of the definitive site, ‘Have I been pwned’ (https://haveibeen pwned.com). Enter your address, press search, and brace for dismay. Of my three current addresses, only one is still sacrosanct, the other has starred in no fewer than three infamous dumps, and the third in ‘just’ one. Ouch. Obviously the service only searches among known data dumps from breaches; there’s no guarantee your info isn’t also lurking out there somewhere else, quietly ticking like the proverbial time bomb. OF all the self-improvement obsessions which have gripped the UK this month - like ‘Veganuary,’ ‘dry January’ and ‘clothes sobriety’ (a respite from retail therapy) - none seems to have gripped more than the first one, the worship of the plant-based diet, veganism. But please can we stop talking about it so much? Yes, it’s on the rise, however, and in the past four years the number of vegans in the UK has quadrupled to 600,000, with many more signing up to ‘Veganuary.’ But let’s get to the meat (sorry, couldn’t resist) of the issue. The problem with veganism (and vegetarianism, for that matter) is it seems to turn what simply amounts to a food choice, into basically, a religion. One which apparently requires its adherents to try to make converts of the rest of us in a humour-free, hectoring fashion with about as much warmth and brio as a dinner party jointly hosted by Jeremy Corbyn and Theresa May. My other ‘beef’ is why do vegans try to imitate meat, fish or dairy products? An imitation burger will always compare unfavourably with a decent meat one. They should be developing their own cuisine, with

The unstoppable rise of veganism VEGANISM: Are we obsessed with becoming vegans? the vegetarian cuisines of India, China and south-east Asia a good place to start. As veganism grows and McDonald’s offers vegan Happy Meals, even naysayers like Gordon Ramsay, who once said if his children ever went vegetarian he’d electrocute them, offered a Veganuary menu. (Well, business is business.) However, another big trend is, apparently, flexitarian; people who eat meat, fish and dairy but want to cut back or try vegan/veggie food. A bit like the chap who decided he was trans-vegan so he could virtue signal all day but still have a nice bit of steak in the evening. But each to their own.

Take my dog, for instance, who is lactose and gluten-intolerant but loves chips. Only kidding! As for me, I’m off to have my eggs, bacon, black pudding, sausages and fried bread (all cooked in delicious duck fat) breakfast. What more could anyone want? How to cancel insurance? I would like to cancel my medical insurance at the end of 2019. When exactly do I have to cancel it? Can I do it now, or must I wait until December 2019? Attached is a text from the insurance company which I do not understand very well. HK (Costa del Sol)

If your insurance office is near you, my advice is to deliver your written notice personally and discuss it with your agent or broker. In addition, inform your bank in writing not to pay the insurance bill. Just in case. It is surprising how often the insurance company sends the bill and the bank pays it, even when they are properly informed. Do this in November.

Barry Duke IN the space of a week, first as a passenger in a taxi and then on a bus, I heard the respective drivers swearing like fishwives after they’d come within inches of what could have been two serious prangs. In both instances - in the same week that Prince Philip, 97, crashed his Land Rover - the cars which had caused the near-collisions had UK licence plates and elderly drivers. Most of what the bus driver yelled was incomprehensible to me. But I got the gist of what he shouted: ‘Foreign drivers are s*&t!’ The taxi driver ’s tirade, on the other hand, was in English and he told me foreign drivers were the bane of his life. ‘The problem is they are far too old and have no idea what they’re doing.’ Then, suddenly realising he may have offended me, he asked whether I drove. I replied that I gave up because I suffer glaucoma, a condition which has robbed me of my peripheral vision. So I decided the responsible thing to do was to pack in motorcycles and cars. But I agreed that far too many

have reached an age which makes them a danger to themselves and others. For decades, I tore around the streets of London on a variety of motorbikes without getting turned into flying mince by incompetent drivers, but when I moved to Brighton, all that changed. Very soon I learned the roads of Sussex were full of pensioners mainly driving Volvos, and they only ever looked into their rear view mirrors to check whether they were wearing their cloth caps and spectacles. On one occasion, a Volvo ahead of me stopped without warning. The driver then threw the car into reverse, and crashed into me. Amazingly he angrily accused me of rear-ending him! The old geezer quickly backed down when a witness confirmed not only was I stationary when I was hit, but that I was sounding my horn. Turned out

the driver was practically stone deaf. But British drivers in Spain are often heard loudly complaining that Spanish drivers are the ones who are rubbish. This from freelance writer Sandra Piddock: ‘Your average Spaniard is very laid back and never in a hurry; unless he’s behind the wheel. ‘He’ll overtake anyone who isn’t going fast enough for him, which means just about everybody else on the road. What’s really annoying is the way the Spanish signal their intentions. They don’t, and you have to play Mystic Meg and guess where they’re heading. ‘The average Spaniard is so full of his own importance behind the wheel he expects everyone to know what he’s doing and where he’s going. If you don’t guess right, it’s your fault, not his.’ I’m fine not owning a vehicle in Spain because bus and train fares are dirt cheap, and taxis charge fair prices, so my annual outlay on transport is minimal. But not everyone thinks public transport is a good thing. A moronic Tory politician once told me in all seriousness that if London were to ban buses, car drivers would get around the city far faster than they do.

Despite being the third biggest autonomous region in Spain, it is one of the most sparsely populated; yet it is still an area of unspoilt beauty and has plenty to offer all types of visitor. Parque Natural de las Lagunas de Ruidera Located within an otherwise parched region of Castile-La Mancha, the wetlands of the Parque Natural de

las Lagunas de Ruidera are an oasis of stunning lakes and diverse flora and fauna. The protected park consists of 15 interconnected turquoisecoloured lakes that stretch for 25 kilometres through the valley of the Alto Guadiana. Here you will find numerous species of birds including bustards, herons, eagles and many species of duck. During the summer visitors are able to enjoy the waters in the bathing areas and practise sports such as diving, fishing and canoeing. Alcaraz Alcaraz is an ancient city steeped in history and culture that sits at the foot of the Sierra de Alcaraz. Of particular tourist interest is the Renaissance Plaza Mayor that houses the ‘twin towers’ of Tardón and Trinidad, which have been declared sites of national tourist interest. The main square is surrounded by narrow streets lined with traditional houses. On the outskirts of the town you will see the castle ruins as well as the remaining arch of what was once a magnificent aqueduct. Other impressive buildings include the San Miguel church and the Santa María Magdalena convent.

Surprisingly good for you WE all know some foods are better for us than others, and most of us try to stick mainly to a diet of products which support our health, spurning some of our favourites in the quest to look after ourselves. But did you know that some of the foods we might think of as being traditionally ‘bad,’ may in fact contain surprising health benefits? And while this may be warranted in the case of potatoes served in the form of French fries, crisps or mash, prepared healthily potatoes

When we exercise, especially intensively such as performing cardio, High Intensity Interval Training (HIIT) or a full-on weights session, our body requires fuel and energy to sustain this. This fuel comes from protein which helps to repair muscle, and carbs which our body draws on for energy. To exercise and not supply our body with this, will lead to storing fat we have eaten, for energy. The result? Fatigue, injury, and certainly not weight loss. Green vegetables, wholegrain rice, lentils, quinoa, pasta, sweet potatoes, all with a healthy supply of meat or fish for the protein. Quarter of antibiotics ‘unnecessary’ ANTIBIOTICS - once prescribed freely for even minor infections - are increasingly being given out less frequently due to concerns we are becoming resistant to them. Even so, a recent study found that in 2016 one in six patients was still given antibiotics they did not need. Researchers at the University of Michigan looked at antibiotic prescriptions for privately insured Americans and found that 23 per cent were unnecessary, and 28 per cent were given without diagnosis, while only 36 per cent were possibly necessary, and even fewer - 8 per cent - were absolutely necessary. The data also showed that one in 10 children had received an unnecessary prescription in 2016. Kao-Ping Chua, lead author of the study, warned that the study may still underestimate the full extent of the problem, and that overuse of antibiotics may one day make even the mildest of infections impossible to treat.

More questions than answers Reader John Hare in Almeria Province has taken issue with the EWN over its coverage of the PGOU master plan that helps to make homes legal in Zurgena. HAVING attended the PGOU meeting, it was good to think that quite a high number of Zurgena residents may eventually, in time, get legal status for their property. However, having sat through the whole meeting, seen the article in the Euro Weekly News, I must take issue over some of what I heard and have read. The main reason for my suspicion is the status of some of the land as on the plan shown at the meeting, seems to be clearly wrong and contravenes one of the strictest parts of the LOUA planning laws. That is: Article 46. Non Urbanisable Land (Suelo No Urbanizable) Section i. “It presents real risks of erosion, slippage, landslide, flood or other natural risks.” Many properties have already been affected by flooding and some have lost land into the ramblas (gulley). There are even cases where the villas are very close to crumbling edges and look dodgy to say the least. Such examples, I would have thought, must be non-urbanisable yet shown on the provided plan as Non Consolidated Urban. I therefore think it is misleading to the community to make quotes such as ‘approval of the PGOU in its entirety’ and ‘all properties shown as urban consolidated, urban not consolidated and urbanisable will become urban consolidated, in other words fully legal.’ If the council intends to issue more building licences on such land in the future, surely, this could be very misleading and costly to unsuspecting buyers. Rest in peace WE were sad to learn that the remains of Julen, the twoyear-old boy who fell down a well in Andalucia’s Malaga Province, were found on Saturday. Post-mortem tests have now begun on his body, with the results due in about two weeks. Coroners and forensic experts said the two-year-old probably free fell 71 metres down the bore hole in Totalan. Sunday saw hundreds of mourners gather at Malaga City’s San Juan Cemetery for Julen’s funeral. Parents Jose Rosello and Victoria Garcia were joined by government officials and those who took part in rescue efforts for the ceremony. The death of Julen is tragic, made all the more so by the fact the two-year-old’s parents lost another son in 2017. The search for Julen saw the local community rally round to lend its efforts in hope of reaching him alive. Their efforts were in vain but in the tragedy we saw how the desire to put aside daily concerns to help those in jeopardy can push people to heroic lengths. Those efforts captured the imagination of our readers, Spain and large parts of the world. The death has also cast light on the wider issue of illegal wells in Spain. The Ministry of Agriculture estimates there could be as many as 510,000 throughout the country. But for now we join our readers who commented in the hundreds on our coverage to say: ‘Rest in peace’ to Julen.

He landed on earth that filled up the lower part of the well and there was no water. He wouldn’t have drowned, but most definitely that fall would have killed him instantly. You may wonder why a stranger in the UK is writing this? I’ve no one to talk to - and Julen has been on my mind since the accident. It helps me - as i hope it does you too - to know he didn’t suffer. While two weeks in Benidorm are still popular and weekends in Marbella or Barcelona are as glitzy as ever, the search for a moments diversion now encompasses Oslo, New Orleans or even the South Seas of the Pacific. The Galapagos Islands are no longer considered distant, more an option to add to the visit list. Telly making me grumpy Mike Senker In my opinion Views of a Grumpy Old Man AS my readers know by now, Mrs S and I like a bit of telly. Currently there are two shows making me grumpy: The Voice and The Greatest Dancer. It’s not the content, but the judges, and not actually the judges themselves, but their clothes. The shows have been on for three weeks now and in every episode they are wearing the same clobber. Now, either they stink, or all the episodes are filmed on the same day. If so, at least give them a few changes of clothing because it’s really getting on my nerves. How hard can it be to have a few shirts around for the blokes and some frocks for the ladies? I mean, for goodness sake, make an effort to make me believe it’s just not churned out on one day. Here’s another one the PC brigade have come up with. In movies where the storyline features a disabled person they say the part should only be played by a genuinely disabled person. I am registered 66 per cent disabled so I am allowed an opinion on this. Here it is.

Don’t talk nonsense - if there is a disabled actor who fits the role then fine, and if not, then use any actor who can do the part justice and make the movie as realistic as possible. Eddie Redmayne, Al Pacino, Daniel DayLewis, Tom Hanks and Leo DiCaprio - to name just a few - have all done it, done it well and in a sympathetic way. Who are we to say that Sean Penn has no right to portray someone with a disability? That’s his job - to portray people who he is not - and he’s pretty good at it too. That’s what actors do! It’s getting ridiculous. Let’s take advertising. Does every painkiller ad have to be played by someone with a headache? What about the Maltesers ad where two secretaries are chatting - here’s an exclusive - they are really actors! Oh and here’s something I’m sure is going to shock you: the meerkat compare insurance ads don’t actually feature real meerkats! Of course, there are some brilliant actors with disabilities or learning difficulties who play great parts like Liz Carr in Silent Witness, RJ Mitte from Breaking Bad and Liam Bairstow from Coronation Street. On that subject, I’m trying to get hold of David Walliams as I am the real Andy Pipkin from Little Britain, because although I use a wheelchair, I can get up and walk and I want them to use me in the show in future.

Some years ago, Black Friday arrived on these shores and has since gone global. A shopping event imported from the USA, one which had a logic in the USA as its origin lies within the holiday weekend of Thanksgiving but in Europe and the UK it seemed to me always a little odd. Black Friday advertising in the newspapers and on TV in the week prior seems OK, but when it goes on and on not only for the day after and beyond, it is very odd indeed.

In 1981, I was taken aback by the arrival in England of The Stray Cats. The spectacularly coiffured retro rockers who took the 1950’s sound of Sun Studio Rockabilly, added a dash of punk attitude and styling, and for a brief period, added something different and pure to the charts. Formed in Massapequa, New York in 1979 by guitarist and singer Brian Setzer, double bass player Lee Rock and drummer Slim Jim Phantom, the trio quickly picked up a substantial following across New York. Over the years it has become one of the most popular cuts of meat, very much on trend with chefs like me that like using the sou-

vide machine or slow cooking unusual cuts of meat. It is one of those dishes that is widely appreciated all over the world, but it hailed from Cordoba on our doorstep! Its tradition began around the 16th century when most women had to reinvent their cooking skills in order to cook for large numbers of people. Since they were allowed to take the tails from the bulls killed in the bull fights, this type of food became extremely popular. Soon rabo de toro turned from the poor food into an elegant and aristocratic dish, like most poor food! Although found all over the world especially in places like South America, the Spanish have the dish perfect in my opinion. The rich gravy flavoured from the tender meat cooking on the bone, creates the most amazing flavours. Oxtail is a gelatin rich meat which helps it keep moist whilst it slow cooks and adds all that

I got started before lunchtime to prepare in advance. I opened at least three bottles of good red wine to cook it in and obviously

sampled them first! The first wine was an amazing Barolo from Italy and after a few glasses I reluctantly gave the rest up for the stew. The second bottle was a French burgundy and that too was great and so I took a couple of glasses. The third bottle was a Spanish Rioja reserva

and after a large glass of this beautiful smooth red I started to feel a bit dizzy and very tired and so I put the stew in the oven on a low heat and sat down on the sofa. I fell asleep and when my friends turned up for dinner at 8pm I had been asleep for almost eighthours! Oh my god

the stew!! I rushed to the oven with my friends laughing out loud and looked in the pan. To my surprise the oxtail had cooked to the most tender delicious meat absorbing all the red wine and the stock, the flavours were amazing. I served it up with truffled mash and everyone said it was the best oxtail they had ever eaten. Falling asleep had done me a favour albeit the recipe I was looking at had only called for four hours cooking. From that day on I have always made it the same way. I drink some of the wine, put the rest in the stew, put the stew in the oven and then fall asleep. It’s such a treat to wake up to this delicious meal as long as you set the alarm! I served this dish up in my Geranium in La Cala this week and regulars Mike and Mary (foodies) were so delighted that they left me a great TripAdvisor review and begged me to cook it more often.

REMEMBER Harold Wilson and George Brown, Tony Blair and Gordon Brown, or even further back, K and B? Political duos rarely last, as it happened in Spain too, with Felipe Gonzalez and Alfonso Guerra, so Pablo Iglesias and Iñigo Errejon were an estrangement waiting to happen. Errejon was one of Podemos’ founders, but the rot had set long before 2017 when Iglesias’ partner Irene Montero eclipsed Errejon by taking over as party spokesman and the party’s second in command. The split is likely to be less helpful than the Podemos hierarchy might hope, because the considerable number of voters who did not take to party supremo Pablo Iglesias were rather taken with Errejon. Podemos came out of nowhere, arriving with flash and a bang and a wallop by winning five seats in the European parliament in the May 2015 elections. That’s the trouble with arriving in a blaze of glory as fireworks so often turn out to be damp squibs. Are you listening Santiago Abascal?

MADRID mayor Manuela Carmena is an independent backed by Mas Madrid while Iñigo Errejon has left his parliamentary seat but insists that he still belongs to Podemos. Meanwhile, he has nailed his colours to Carmena’s mast to campaign with Mas Madrid for the Madrid Community presidency, instead of Podemos as originally planned. Errejon for community president? A lot of people would like to see him put Iglesias’ nose out of joint and he might manage both.

An ill-wind THE PSOE has the jitters, fearing that Podemos’s imminent shipwreck won’t do it any favours come May and the municipal and regional elections. At present, Podemos shores up PSOE town and city halls all over Spain and Pedro Sanchez expected more of the same this time round. What’s the problem? Hardcore supporters will still vote Podemos while outside Madrid they’ll only have the PSOE to turn to, just as pre-Vox right-wingers only had the PP to vote for. The Iglesias-Errejon split could be just what Sanchez needs.

FORMER PRIME MINISTER: Harold Wilson.

The anointed one AT the Partido Popular’s recent Madrid conference the former president Mariano Rajoy made only a fleeting appearance. He also demonstrated his opinion of Pablo Casado by not staying around long enough for a family photo with Jose Maria Aznar which would formally anoint the present PP as a worthy successor. On leaving politics after losing the vote of no confidence at the end of May, Rajoy said, “I will be loyal” ; a pointed but elegant dig at Aznar who had named him as his successor in 2003. Aznar was not loyal to Rajoy, criticising him for being insufficiently forceful and ditching his honorary presidency of the Partido Popular in 2016. Much of that was pique because Rajoy did his own thing, not Aznar’s, so it will be interesting to see how Casado rubs along with Aznar although since the former is further to the Right than Rajoy ever was, everything should be fine and dandy. Until Casado spreads his wings, that is.
