Protecting citizens’ rights is top priority by Cathy Elelman ENSURING the rights of British expatriates will be protected, deal or no-deal Brexit, is a top priority, British Ambassador to Spain Simon Manley has made clear. Speaking exclusively to the Euro Weekly News during a visit to Almeria the day after the British Parliament’s crushing defeat of Teresa May’s Brexit deal, the Ambassador described the vote as a ‘disappointment,’ but stressed whatever the final scenario of the UK’s departure from the European Union, the British government is working to guarantee British nationals in Spain will have the same rights and benefits as they do now. Admitting the deal reached with the EU is not ideal, Mr Manley did say it is a good deal, also pointing out, ‘the European Union has been very clear it’s the only deal.’ He insisted that for British nationals in Spain ‘it’s a particularly good deal, because it gives the utmost legal certainty. “The things embodied in that withdrawal agreement in respect of citizens’ rights are not new; they’re within the political agreements we reached back in December 2017 and then again in March 2018. “But the importance of the withdrawal agreement is that it embodies those agreements, the guarantees about the continuity of citizens’ rights in an international legal treaty, and therefore gives you greater force of law. So that’s why particularly in respect to citizens’ rights we want to ensure we get that deal.” On the matter of whether a no-deal Brexit is now a real possibility, the Ambassador commented: “It is true to say the risk of no-deal has risen as a
SIMON MANLEY: Offering reassurances to British nationals living in Spain. result of yesterday’s vote,” but added, “As the prime minister made clear it is not, has not been and will not be the government’s intention to leave without a deal, and the government will strive to come to a deal which can have the support of the House of Commons.” Mr Manley stressed that deal or no-deal, the ‘good news’ for British nationals living here is that the UK government has said it will protect the rights of EU 27 nationals currently resident in Britain, at the heart of which is the EU Settlement
Scheme, and now the Spanish government has come up a with a similar statement of intent. It has published details in the form of a basis of what will become a royal decree, also establishing a ‘prepared for Brexit’ section on its Moncloa website, which went live last week. “It is fair to say there are areas where we’d like a bit more clarity on what is intended,” the Ambassador said, but made it clear discussions were taking place ‘to ensure the Spanish offer is genuinely reciprocal of what we’re doing in the UK.’

City Promotion councillor Carolina Lafita said it will give provincial sector professionals the chance to learn from 11 of the best chefs in Spain specialising in tapas and ‘pinchos,’ and will be ‘a rich exchange of experiences between masters.’ The congress will include days for children, tastings and exhibitions of provincial products.

ONE in three children born in Almeria have a non-Spanish parent, an Andalucia Institute of Statistics report revealed, the highest percentage of any province in the region. Of the 1,702 babies born in the province in the first quarter of 2018, 500 had two foreign parents.

Donations up THE Almeria Transfusion Centre collected 2,695 plasma donations in 2018 at its centre and from donation bus collections around the province and in the city, up 26.6 per cent on 2017. There were nearly 19,300 blood donations, an increase of 1.2 per cent.

THE cost of living in Almeria fell by 0.7 per cent in December, according to National Institute of Statistics figures. Tr a n s p o r t , c l o t h i n g a n d footwear, food and non-alcoholic drinks were cheaper on average in December than November, while leisure and culture prices went up.

The festival, which honours patron saint of the city Saint Valerius of Zaragoza (San Valero in Spanish), takes place every year on January 29. San Valero was Bishop of Zaragoza, then Caesaraugusta, from 290 to 315. He was imprisoned before being killed in Valencia during the persecution of Christians under the Roman Emperor
Diocletian, making him a martyr in the faith. His remains were said to have been discovered in the Pyrenees and they were taken to Roda de Isabena which was then the religious centre of Aragon. Airport takes off THE Murcia Region International Airport has finally taken off, 10 years after construction on the new transport infrastructure began and six years after it was completed. King Felipe VI officially inaugurated Corvera airport last week, accompanied by Development Minister Jose Luis Abalos and Murcia Region President Fernando Lopez Miras. The very first flight to land was a connection from East Midlands airport, one of 12 routes currently in
operation. There are at the moment nine connections with the UK, two with Belgium and one with Ireland. The number of services is however expected to increase in the spring, with flights to additional destinations in the UK, as well as domestic flights and connections with a number of European cities. Corvera is located 25 kilometres from Murcia City. San Javier has now ceased to operate as a civil airport.

Lion’s share of budget THE AVE high-speed rail line accounts for 86 per cent of the money allocated to Almeria in the 2019 State General Budget. The government pledged €401 million for the province, of which €348 million is earmarked for works on the MurciaAlmeria rail link. Of the remaining €53 million, projects set to receive funding include the A-92 extension to Almeria City and a third lane on the dual-carriageway between Roquetas de Mar and the provincial capital.

The municipality’s Easter Week processions have traditionally been the biggest lure for visitors, but the local authority is keen to present a more extensive and diverse tourist offer. At this week’s FITUR International Tourism Fair the council delegation is armed with a new promotional video featuring the outdoor and sporting activities available in Huercal-Overa, including horse riding, hiking, cycling, mountain biking and 4x4 routes, highlighting the appeal of the municipality’s natural landscapes. “Up until a short time ago Huercal-Overa was known only for its religious tourism, at Easter,” commented Tourism councillor Monica Navarro. Top turnout for solidarity run NEARLY 350 runners turned out for Sunday’s fundraising mountain run to help sufferers of motor neuron disease and their families. Organised by Cantoria local council and Bichos Runners, competitors chose between a 14 or a 24-kilometre route through the Almanzora Valley, running on roads, tracks and paths. Cantoria mayor Puri Sanchez described the event as ‘the best finale to our Carretillas fiestas,’ pointing out participants had come from as far afield as Granada, Mur-
cia, Valencia, Malaga and Sevilla to take part. All the money raised from the first Trial de la Polvera (Gunpowder Trial) goes to the Andalucian Motor Neuron Disease Association to help fund the organisation’s programmes and patient care. The association said the aim of the event had been ‘to promote health, community collaboration and solidarity with the families affected by MND in Andalucia, a serious neurodegenerative disease which can affect anyone and at any age.’

Burning building rescue GUARDIA CIVIL managed to rescue seven people trapped inside a burning building in Roquetas de Mar. The emergency services were alerted to the fire in Avenida Carlos III first thing in the morning. When a Guardia patrol arrived at the apartment block, they could see smoke billowing out of the windows, and the fire appeared to be on the first floor. Having set up a safety perimeter, officers saw someone inside the building trying to put out the flames with a fire extinguisher. Given the difficulty breathing inside, the officers got them out, realising others were trapped on upper floors. The staircase was full of smoke, so officers took the decision to get the trapped occupants up onto the roof terrace so they could breathe and calm down. By then, parts of the building appeared to be coming down. Despite smoke filling the staircase they decided the best option was to exit the building down the stairs, carrying two children and a person with reduced mobility. Once safely outside, the officers and seven rescued residents received medical attention for smoke inhalation.

Brexit, illegal properties and serving as Ambassador In a wide-ranging interview with the Euro Weekly News, British Ambassador to Spain Simon Manley talked about Brexit, illegal properties and his time in office as the UK’s foremost diplomatic representative in this country.

THE Ambassador made it clear the UK is working with the Spanish government to ensure citizens’ rights in both countries are guaranteed, deal or nodeal Brexit, but stressed, “At the very heart of what we’re saying is residency.” The withdrawal treaty looks at people who are legally resident, Mr Manley pointed out, underlining the importance of British expatriates registering at ‘Extranjeria’ offices. Commenting on payments, notably pensions, to UK nationals in Spain from British companies if there is a no-deal Brexit, the Ambassador admitted, “It is one of the concerns,” but added, “We’re doing what we can to ensure that’s not going to be a problem. “We’re very conscious that pensions generally has been a big issue for people here, particularly the updating of pensions,” saying commitments have been made in respect of a deal or no-deal scenario. On the possibility of a delay to the UK’s departure from the EU, Mr Manley remarked, “Everything we have done is based on the assumption we’re leaving on March 29. It takes quite an effort to change course.” In his view the EU is unlikely to agree to a delay

unless the UK government could give a very good reason why, the plan behind it and demonstrate it had Parliament’s support. He also feels a second referendum is probably not on the cards, remarking, “It needs the support of Parliament, and as of this moment in time, neither main party supports it.” On whether British nationals who had lived outside the UK for more than 15 years should have had the right to vote in the referendum Mr Manley commented, “I can understand the frustration of people here whose lives and livelihoods feel threatened by all this, and who feel they didn’t have a stake in it,” but said he would “hate to assume” how they would have voted. He said the government is “committed” to changing the law so that people who have spent more than 15 years outside the UK can vote in future. Mr Manley referred also to the agreement on British expatriates’ voting rights in municipal elections saying, “I do think it’s really important that people who’ve had that right to vote here in local elections continue to have it.”
Addressing the issue of British expatriates whose homes are classified as illegal, the Ambassador told EWN, “We’ve been very happy to work with a number of associations which represent them and have been fighting for their rights, and we’ve tried to do our very modest bit to help.” Praising the associations’ “extraordinary activism, energy and commitment,” and the important part they’ve played in the progress made in recent years, the Ambassador explained, “While we can’t really get involved in individual cases, what we have tried to do is to support the efforts of the groups to bring the issues to the attention of lawmakers.” “The best job of my career,” was how Mr Manley described serving as British Ambassador to Spain, citing the diversity of the job and the vast range of people he meets as standout aspects of the post, as well as “the extraordinary commitment of so many British residents here to charitable causes.” “Everywhere I go in this country I meet fearless, innovative and committed people who give up so much of their time and energy to help others. Pipe works ALMERIA Provincial Council has started updating more than 3.5 kilometres of water pipes in Huercal-Overa as part of the Water Infrastructure Improvement Plan. The first works are in the Fuente Amarga of Huercal-Overa, involving the replacement of 796 metres of pipes and putting into operation a remote-control system to detect leaks and breakages and register data to make the network
more efficient. Once completed, 759 metres of new pipes are set to be installed in Huercal-Overa town and Giviley. “This investment is going to translate into kilometres of pipes which will guarantee that water gets to the residents of 19 municipalities in the best conditions and which benefits the efficiency of water resources,” said Development Deputy Oscar Liria. Huercal-Overa mayor Domin-
go Fernandez said the works would mean residents ‘are going to receive a better service,’ and ‘will put an end to problems and breakdowns in many zones.’ The €8 million water infrastructure plan covers Antas, Bedar, Carboneras, Cuevas del Almanzora, Huercal-Overa, Los Gallardos, Mojacar, Pulpi, Taberno, Turre, Zurgena, Albanchez, Fines, Laroya, Macael, Sierro, Somontin, Sufli and Tijola.

by Tara Rippin A BENEFIT cheat who fiddled almost €50,000 of UK taxpayers’ cash while bragging about running a business in Spain on her Facebook account, has been sentenced to a suspended six-month jail term. Louise Jones, 50, reportedly claimed British disability benefits and housing allowance for almost 10 years, despite living in Spain, though the disability aid she was entitled to. Jones was rumbled after posting photographs of her wedding on social media. An investigation showed she received housing benefit for two houses owned by her husband in Hull and Cleethorpes, while living with him near Alicante.

According to the Mid-Devon Advertiser, Jones posted images of her engagement in 2015 and her w e d d i n g t w o y e a r s l a t e r, describing herself as managing director of a property business. Exeter Crown Court reportedly heard the marriage didn’t last long, and Jones was forced to move back to her family in Devon and face the legal consequences. Jones admitted eight counts of benefit fraud and was jailed for six months, suspended for two years. The Judge also set a timetable for the seizure of any remaining assets under the Proceeds of Crime Act, which may include any joint interest in the two houses mentioned.
Voting Rights Treaty signed AFTER what has seemed l i k e a n e v e r- e n d i n g w a i t and ending months of frustration, the UK and Spain h a v e s i g n e d t h e Vo t i n g Rights Treaty. This will not only enable UK citizens legally registered in Spain and on
the electoral roll to continue to vote in the forthcoming municipal elections at the end of May, it will also allow people to stand as councillors. The Treaty will also allow Spanish citizens living in the UK similar
rights. Following the 2015 elections, a total of 37 British citizens were elected as councillors - both governing and opposition a c r o s s t h e c o u n t r y, w i t h the majority in Andalucia and Valencia. Many of those will once again be seeking to serve their local communities, with a number seeking election for the first time. The treaty was signed in Madrid on Monday morni n g b y S p a i n ’s S e c r e t a r y for the EU, Marco Aguiria n o a n d t h e U K ’s U n d e r Secretary of State at the Department for Exiting the EU, Robin Walker, MP. Those who have previously voted will not have to register again, but the advice is to double check that your name is still on your local list.

By Tara Rippin GREENPEACE has devised a ranking system to rate Spanish supermarkets based on their commitment to curb the excessive use of plastic. Marking the stores out of 10, the organisation found Eroski had the best ‘plastic footprint’ and marked the company 6.2.
At the other end of the scale El Corte Ingles received the lowest score of the eight chains, with just 3.4 out of 10. Meanwhile, also in the top three stores actively attempting to reduce pollution are Aldi with 5.6, and Mercadona 5.1. Along with El Corte Ingles, other supermarkets which Greenpeace feels need to im-
prove are Lidl which was given 4.7, Dia (4.6), Carrefour (4.2), and Alcampo (3.5). Lidl eliminated plastic bags in its supermarkets in the Balearic Islands last May, and has announced (after the official ranking), it will wipe out all single-use plastic items, including tableware, drinking straws and cotton buds.

Fatal robbery probe POLICE found the body of an 86-year-old man, with ‘signs of violence’ at a Madrid hostel after a neighbour called emergency services to report hearing noises coming from his room. Madrid’s emergency coordinating centre received a c a l l a t 11 . 2 0 p m l a s t Wednesday in which a resident warned ‘there was an injured person in a room where a theft could have occurred.’ On entering the pensioner’s room on the first floor of the Pension Montañesa building in the MoncloaAravaca district, SUMMA emergency personnel discovered the bodyof the elderly man displaying obvious signs of violence. Moustapha El Karchaoui, 26, also from Sa Pobla,was last seen in mid-August. His family became increasingly concerned when he didn’t get in touch, and reported him missing. The Guardia Civil opened an investigation and found ‘indications’ that led them to believe it was not a voluntary disappearance. According to press reports, further arrests have not been ruled out.

No-deal Brexit pet warning BRITISH pet owners who wish to take their animals with them to EU countries including Spain could face having to plan trips months in advance if a no-deal Brexit takes place. The European Commission (EC) has said Britain would become a ‘third country’ under EU rules when it leaves on Friday March 29, regardless of whether a deal is reached. Third countries are those outside the EU. The British government has said it is hoping the EU will include it on a list of third countries which do not need to meet all requirements. But if Britain leaves without a deal, that may not happen. Theo Knight-Jones, of the International Livestock Research Institute, said: “You need to get cracking and contact your vet to make sure your pets are able to go.” British citizens would have to ensure their pets meet the same requirements citizens from non-EU countries do. These include microchipping, vaccinations, and blood tests, which are part of a process estimated to take around three months or longer.

The prime minister added she was seeking further changes on the Northern Irish backstop mechanism. What are your UK pension options in Spain today? Pensions are often the key to long-term financial security, so take extreme care when deciding what to do here. Expatriates have the added complication of factoring in the tax rules of two countries, as well as the potential for Brexit to limit the range of opportunities. So what are today’s options for Britons living in Spain? Defined contribution’ or ‘money purchase’ pensions Since the pension freedoms of 2015, members of defined contribution schemes can usually do the following from age 55: • Take the whole fund as cash – 25% will be tax-free in the UK. • Make cash withdrawals when you want – a quarter is free of UK tax each time. • Take regular income through ‘flexible drawdown’, leaving the remainder invested. • Take a secure, regular income for life through an ‘annuity’. Expatriates have the option to transfer UK pension funds to an EU-based Qualifying Recognised Overseas Pension Scheme (QROPS) tax-free. QROPS

Once in a QROPS, funds are protected from future UK taxation, including lifetime allowance penalties. However, QROPS benefits and rules vary significantly between providers and jurisdictions. There is also a 25% UK tax charge on transfers to QROPS outside the EEA (European Economic Area). Many believe the UK government may start taxing EU/EEA transfers after Brexit, so
if you are considering transferring, act sooner rather than later to avoid unnecessary taxation. First, take specialist advice to establish if transferring is suitable for you. ‘Defined benefit’ or ‘final salary’ pensions Here, your employer guarantees a proportion of your salary for the whole of retirement. While you cannot usually withdraw cash from this type of pension, you can transfer it to a defined contribution scheme or QROPS. Traditionally, this has been considered less beneficial than drawing a guaranteed pension for life. However, some providers have been offering higher than usual ‘transfer values’, sometimes representing hundreds of thousands of pounds. Sensibly reinvested, a high one-off sum could potentially provide a retirement income that exceeds the original annual payment, but it is crucial to fully understand the consequences before giving up lifetime benefits.

SCIENTISTS in the north of Spain believe they may have found a way to destroy the most lethal forms of brain tumour. Researchers claim they have developed a nanoparticle capable of penetrating tumours and transporting drugs to malignant cells. Teams from the Centre for Research in Molecular Medicine and Chronic Diseases of the University of Santiago de Compostela, along with members of Spain’s Carlos III Health Institute and the University of Nottingham, UK, published the results of their experimental therapy in the Advanced Therapeutics journal after carrying out trials on mice. The research was led by Marcos Garcia Fuentes, who said: “The tests with mice produced very good results, given that those who were only given chemotherapy ended up with tumours twice as large as those treated with chemotherapy and nanoparticles.” He claimed the breakthrough could be applied to humans, saying, “the idea is to implant it (genetic drugs) directly into the brain, for example, because the intravenous route is very complicated and less likely to succeed.”
OVER the last decade, Spain has registered 133,241 instances of illegal immigration, with the people arriving from around 70 different countries. The latest data comes from the European border control agency, Frontex, and shows that the highest percentage of illegals come from Algeria (16.7 per cent). This is followed by Morocco (15.4 per cent) and between the two countries account for almost a third. However, between 2009 and 2018, it is noted that just over 30,000 of illegal immigrants come from an ‘unknown’ geographical origin. According to reports, the Spanish Minister for the Interior, Fernando Grande-Marlaska, said: “At first, many people do not want to state their nationality in the hope that they won’t be returned to their country of origin.” Overall in 2018, Spain has seen 7,564 extra illegal immigrants entering the country since 2009 which amounts to 5.6 per cent of the past 10-year total.
Taxation While 25% of cash withdrawals can be taken tax-free in the UK, if you are non-UK resident they are usually taxable in your country of residency. Spanish residents accessing UK pensions or QROPS income will attract Spanish general income tax. Rates vary regionally, but generally start at 9.5% and reach up to 48%. The exception here is UK government service pensions – including teachers’, local authority, army, police and civil service pensions – which remain taxable in the UK only. Making your pensions last If you do choose to take some or all of your benefits as cash, ensure you have a reliable plan to fund your long-term future that matches your personal circumstances and goals. Avoid pension scams by making sure any company you are dealing with regarding pension services is regulated with the UK Financial Conduct Authority (FCA). Remember: unprotected investments risk
losing your money, with no compensation if things go wrong. Even amongst regulated providers, check for quality. Your adviser should take account of your needs, objectives, personal circumstances and risk appetite to find the best solution for you and your family. Getting it wrong could have serious and unexpected consequences. Depopulation call A SHRINKING population a n d a l a c k o f b a s i c s e rvices and infrastructure is leading to poverty and inequality in some parts of Spain, according to the head of the Spanish Ombudsman. Francisco Fernandez Marugan said in a letter to the government’s Depopulation Commissioner that Madrid could not treat people differently depending on where they live. “A shrinking population and the difficulty of accessing basic services leads to poverty and ine q u a l i t y, ” Fernandez Marugan said. The letter was also sent to officials with the regional governments of Aragon, Castilla-La Mancha, Castilla y Leon, C a t a l u ñ a , Va l e n c i a , E x tremadura, Galicia and La Rioja. Many of them continue to face depopulation in small rural towns.

A SPANISH tourist visiting Mallorca was rushed to Son Espases Hospital on Sunday evening after being hit by a train. At around 6.30pm, the 63year-old woman, from Barcelona, reportedly fell onto the railway line at Consell station, just as a train was arriving. Emergency services despatched to the scene carried out resuscitation techniques, and the injured female was taken to hospital in ‘a serious condition.’ The train driver was also treated for shock. The Guardia Civil has launched an investigation into the circumstances. According to sources, one theory is that the woman may have fainted seconds before the incident. Another is that she could have been blown onto the track by a strong gust of wind. At the time of going to press, a hospital spokesperson confirmed ‘the woman remains in a critical condition.’ There are reports she has had to have a leg amputated and has ‘serious head injuries.’

Tourism data shows growth ACTIVITY in the tourism sector grew by 2 per cent in 2018, generating some €142 billion and creating almost 50,100 new jobs according to the Exceltur industry body. Figures showed employment in the sector grew by 3.1 per cent and wages rose by 2.7. The greatest increases took place in the regions of Castilla-La Mancha, Extremadura and Navarra. Treasury sets tax priorities
National debt increases THE national debt of Spain stood at almost €1.2 trillion at the beginning of December, climbing to around 97.5 per cent of gross domestic product (GDP) according to the country’s central bank. The Bank of Spain’s figures showed the national debt increased year-on-year by almost €30.2 billion, or 2.6 per cent. Government forecasts originally predicted that the debt would stand at around 96.9 per cent of GDP at the end of last year, 0.6 per cent lower than last week’s figure. The government’s debt to GDP ratio tar-

The increases were driven by rises in central government debt to more than €1 trillion, 4.3 per cent higher than at the same time in 2017. The total debts of Spain’s regions stood at almost €293 billion, a yearon-year increase of 2.3 per cent. Local authorities saw their debts fall by 11 per cent collectively year-on-year to almost €26.4 billion. Welfare agencies saw their debts grow by 50.5 per cent year-on-year
to almost €41.2 billion. The increase was largely down to the agencies borrowing from the government to plug gaps in pension budgets. The figures come as the government said it would aim to reduce Spain’s public spending deficit to 1.3 per cent of GDP. The plans are part of an ongoing push from eurozone countries that were plunged into debt crises from 2009 onwards during the recession. Some thought Spain’s budget proposals for this year would be rejected by Europe because of plans to increase government spending.
SPAIN’S AEAT Tax Agency is set to exercise greater control over big financial firms, internet sales, ‘fintech’ companies and cryptocurrencies, according to Treasury officials who outlined this year’s priorities. The Treasury said in plans published in the Official State Gazette (BOE) that AEAT would begin using a new tax risk management tool to monitor agency cases more closely. The tool is designed to make greater sense of large financial companies’ profits which often form part of complex networks, making them harder to tax.

pensation for early repayments, rounding interest rates and reference indices. Seperately, CaixaBank announced last week it planned to lay off 2,157 workers, 7.3 per cent of staff. The bank said in a statement it was currently in talks with unions over the job cuts. They come as part of wider strategic planning which is set to see up to 821 branches of CaixaBank, 18 per cent, close.

Minister BBVA probe call ECONOMY MINISTER Nadia Calviño has called on a court investigating a Bilbao-based bank to clarify details on its probe into spying allegations. Calviño said the BBVA scandal did not help the sector’s image and its reputation depended on knowing where responsibility for wrongdoing may lie. The minister’s comments come as BBVA said it was conducting its own probe into claims it hired pri-
vate investigators to monitor leading businesspeople and politicians more than a decade ago. “This is a matter for the courts but they should clarify the situation on possible responsibility,” Calviño said. The Minister added the European Central Bank (ECB) had not put pressure on government officials over the case. There is reportedly speculation that the ECB may force senior BBVA figures to resign.

Sensible decision for a change LEAPY LEE SAYS IT OTHERS THINK IT I AM delighted to see that a recent case, which had endeavoured to block Britain from sharing intelligence with the USA, has been thrown out by the High Court. Apparently, the mother of Elsheikh, one of the scum highly suspected of being one of the Daesh ‘Beatles’ executioners, tried to block the Home Secretary Sajid Javid’s decision to hand over 600 witness statements to the USA until they guaranteed he would not receive the death penalty if put on trial there! You really couldn’t make it up. This whole farcical case positively reeks of yet another lowlife lawyer’s attempts to wring as much financial remuneration as they can from the misery and heartbreak of others. Despite the statement from one of her legal team that ‘Elsheikh’s mother found the court’s decision difficult to take on board,’ there’s no escaping the fact that this woman, with probably extremely limited legal acumen, was almost certainly put up to the whole thing by some opportunist company of lawyers. They, I’m sure, despite losing the case are quietly congratulating themselves on bleeding yet another substantial fee from the coffers of the British taxpayer.
HIGH COURT: Case thrown out. To my mind, every case which concerns the defence of suspected terrorists or traitors, should have legal charges capped at a reasonable level and any defending lawyers involved, open to public investigation. They should also run the risk, should it be proved they endeavoured to claim exorbitant fees, they could lose all charges and also be fined substantial sums. Perhaps then they will stop this sleazy, misery-chasing practice which to my mind is highly traitorous in itself. I recently worked in the UK with an old friend Freddy ‘Parrot Face’ Davis, who I’m sure many of
you will remember. He sent me this piece, currently doing the rounds, which I thought just about summed up the whole sorry debacle of political correctness the UK is hopelessly inveigled in. It snowed last night. 8am: I made a snowman. 8.10: A feminist passed by and asked me why I didn’t make a snowwoman. 8.15: So I made a snowwoman. 8.17: My feminist neighbour complained about the snowwoman’s voluptuous chest, saying it objectified women everywhere.
8.20: A transgender man/woman/person living nearby asked why I didn’t just make a snowperson with detachable parts. 8.25: The vegans living at the end of the road complained about the carrot nose because veggies are food and should not be used as decoration. 8.28: The Muslim gent across the road demanded the snowwoman be covered in a burka. 8.40: The police arrived saying someone had been offended. 8.42: The feminist neighbour complained again. This time as the broomstick should be removed because it depicted women in a domestic role. 8.45: The council equality officer arrived and threatened me with eviction. 8.50: A TV news crew from Channel 4 showed up. I was asked if I knew the difference between snowmen and snowwomen? I replied snowballs and am now called a sexist. 9am: I was on the news as a suspected terrorist, racist homophobic sensibility offender taking advantage of the bad weather. 9.20: Far-left protesters, offended by everything, marched down the street calling for me to be beheaded! A comfort in sad times A message from Michel Euesden, owner of the Euro Weekly News I DO not offer endorsements lightly. Almerian beauty SPANNING some 45,663 hectares Cabo de Gata-Nijar is Andalucia’s largest coastal protected area and home to some of Europe’s most original geological features. The wild and isolated landscape features dramatic cliffs, small and secluded caves and white sandy beaches, some of the best in Andalucia.
The mountain range is Spain’s largest volcanic rock formation with sharp peaks and crags in ochre-hues which drops steeply to the sea creating jagged 100mhigh cliffs. Offshore are numerous tiny rocky islands and, underwater, extensive coral reefs teeming with marine life, perfect for underwater photography, sailing,
snorkelling and diving. My first guitar hero was Ritchie Blackmore. The first double album I owned was Deep Purple in Concert. I remember listening to Ritchie’s guitar playing in wonderment and thinking to myself I must get a guitar. Although the album was released in 1980, it featured concert performances from 1970 and 1972. By this time Ritchie was long gone from Purple and was riding high with Rainbow. Ritchie first learnt classical guitar at the age of 11 and you could hear some classical influence in a lot of his playing that set him apart from his blues influenced contemporaries. Starting off in the 60’s as a session musi-

Where’s the ‘menu del dia?’ Mike Senker In my opinion Views of a Grumpy Old Man WE go out to eat most days; we prefer a nice lunch and a snack later. We’re also very partial to a ‘menu del dia’ which most restaurants have, and loads advertise them in the papers and also via nice big signs outside. So why do some just present their ‘A la carte’ menu and the wine list? I then have to ask for the menu of the day and all of a sudden, feel like I’m a homeless person that’s wandered off the street begging for a hand-out. It’s not all restaurants but definitely a few of the higher priced ones. So my message is: if you’re going to advertise it to get the punters in, offer it to me when I sit down; don’t make me ask for it. By the way, a big well done to the place I mentioned a couple of weeks ago about the small mixer bottles of coke they were serving. They actually served me a fullsized can last time I went in; mind you they did say it was only because they
couldn’t stand me moaning any more! It pays to be relentless!! I watched a programme last night about sexual harassment and most of it was pretty obvious but there was one thing a barrister said which amazed me. Apparently if you say a female coworker’s perfume smells nice, that’s sexual harassment! Are you sure? Please correct me if I’m wrong. Women and men - me included - put a little splash on so you smell nice around other people. I actually find it very complimentary if someone mentions that you smell nice. In fact, I think it’s really nice that someone should take the trouble to tell you. There were other things as well, like asking someone out for a drink or lunch is also considered harassment apparently. I know I’m old but I’m having trouble working out how men and women get a date these days without the possibility of being sued. It’s not all being done online surely. Game of Thrones reveals official date for final season GAME OF THRONES fans, this is it; the countdown to the beginning of the end. HBO has announced the date for the premiere of the first episode of the last ever series, after months of teasing what is to come. In a new trailer, the network confirmed the long-awaited eighth and final series will air on April 15 at 3am and 10pm CET. The hit adaptation of the fantasy novels of George RR Martin returns to

screens after a near two-year wait, bringing the story to an end after having fans glued since its start in 2011. Game of Thrones has made stars of many of its cast members, including Kit Harington, Emilia Clarke, Sophie Turner, Maisie Williams and Lena Headey, who will all reprise their roles for the last outing. But while this may be the final showdown for the main players, fans can look forward to a prequel, with details revealed last week. The as yet unnamed series takes place thousands of years before the events in Game of Thrones, with HBO saying it ‘chronicles the world’s descent from the Age Of Heroes into its darkest hour.’So how will it all end? Who will survive?

DEAR Sir, I would like to respond to an article in your newspaper last week. Correos have stated a record amount of deliveries they made this year. I would like to say a lot of English people have not had mail for a long time. Myself, a packet got lost in the post in June, BUT the main issue is I only received four Christmas cards from the UK before Christmas. I received five various bills and nine Christmas cards on January 22. One of the private letters was from my bank in the UK posted on December 6. Another one was from Linea Directa posted on December 6, so it is not just the UK mail going astray. A lot of English people are having problems. My Christmas cards were posted on December 10, 11, 12 and 14. Hope this all makes sense Joan Butler
Rubbish problem THE rubbish situation in Cotobro, Almuñecar, is horrendous. Lots of rubbish spread over a large area and broken containers. I have twice contacted the town hall, but their response is that they haven’t thrown the rubbish! I have tried to explain people won’t stop littering until the area is cleaned up and equipped with new containers. I was given a look of disapproval and repeated that ‘they hadn’t thrown the things.’ I hope that some focus on the Almuñecar rubbish situation will help not only in Cotobro, but in general. Migrants v expats I HAVE a flat in Torremolinos and go regularly to my place. I enjoy reading your very informative and interesting newspaper which covers all major issues. However one thing which does irritate me is your version of the British living in Spain. Your paper refers to them as expats, the simple fact is they are British immigrants living in Spain just as we refer to Spanish in the UK as Spanish immigrants. THE British Ambassador to Spain’s pledge to make securing expatriates’ rights a top priority in an interview with Euro Weekly News provides us with much-needed reassurance. Simon Manley told this newspaper that London was also working to make sure Britain does not crash out of the EU without a deal on Friday March 29. Manley has been working diligently in the years since Britain voted to leave the EU to make sure expatriates who want to remain in Spain get the best arrangement possible. His work and that of diplomats and civil servants should be applauded as it shows their dedication to our interests and those of their country. It stands in stark contrast to some politicians in Westminster who use Brexit to advance their careers or insist Britain, and expatriates here, would be fine in a no-deal scenario. The evidence against that is overwhelming and remains the preserve of politicians and pundits who kid themselves that they know more than Manley or other diplomats doing the hard work on the ground. Further into our interview Manley said he and others were working to make sure payments including pensions from British coffers to the country’s citizens here would continue. A pledge to protect voting rights which has now been signed off is also welcome for those of us who want to continue making our voices heard in our communities here.

Hair repair by Sally Underwood NOW is the time of year we start thinking about fresh starts; renewing our health and looking after ourselves for the spring and summer. One of the things which can most benefit from some attention during winter and before the warmer weather, is our hair. Prone to quickly drying out when confronted with central heating, open fires, and air conditioning, our hair also suffers from the cold, wet, and wind. The result is often tresses which may lack their normal shine, as well as split-ends, an overall look of dullness, lack of manageability, and greasy roots. Hair is made up of keratin, a protein which our bodies naturally makes, and also forms our skin and nails. Strands of hair take the structure of cuticles which overlap each other, like roof tiles.
When our hair is not in good condition, these plates don’t sit smoothly, creating a rough appearance and feeling, and lack of shine. For optimum hair health, these cuticles need to lie flat and our hair needs to be provided with the correct balance of moisture and proteins, which hydrate and repair your hair. An excess or a lack of one or both will mean dry, damaged locks. Luckily, it is easy to remedy this using the correct products. This starts by using a gentle shampoo, preferably one with a low sulphate count. Sulphates - the agents which create foam in shampoo and other cleansers - strip natural oils from the hair, providing an efficient clean, but removing a lot of the moisture we are trying to retain. Instead, try a low or no-sulphate variety - found readily in shops

and online - or even the method recommended by many hairdressers and instead using a light conditioner to cleanse your hair. Alternating between moisturising and repairing varieties will also ensure you restore your hair’s necessary balance of hydration and protein. A vital step after shampooing and conditioning is to ensure you remove the majority of water from your hair as quickly as possible as wet hair causes the cuticle to swell, damaging it in the process. One of the quickest and least damaging ways to dry hair is by using a microfibre cloth or towel which wicks away moisture quickly. Finally, make sure to use a serum, hair balm, or leave-in conditioner while your hair is still damp but not soaking, sealing in moisture before it can escape, and flattening the cuticle.
Mirror mirror on the wall THE average man checks his appearance in the mirror around 23 times a day, while for women the figure is 16, so it seems most of us like to
keep a running check on our appearance. But what if instead of simply checking our make-up, or for evidence of what we’ve just eaten, looking

SOME things never seem to change. Take Ryanair, for example. It has won the dubious honour of the UK’s least-liked short-haul airline for the sixth consecutive year. The results from a Which? survey of airline passengers plonked Ryanair at the bottom of 19 carriers flying from the UK. But in other ways, things are changing. Fast. The rapid rise of AI, or Artificial Intelligence, isn’t just closing the door to jobs for some but opening it to crime for others. According to the police, smart gadgets like Alexa pave the way for stalking and abuse. Doorbells, fridges and even toys which can be operated remotely are being used by people to spy on others. But maybe homeowners should be less concerned about stalking and criminal behaviour than privacy intrusion by large tech firms like Google and Amazon. Their business is selling data and you’re the end product. By having ‘smart assistants’ in the home you’re inviting the marketers further into your life. Amazon Echo once sent a recording of an entire private conversation to someone’s colleague. Likewise, Google home devices; their speakers are always on to enable them to listen in for commands, but they’ve also had the tendency to record everything else. Samsung, too,

All in one Lemon Drizzle Cake THERE is something special about nipping out to the garden and picking your own fruit from the tree. We only have one lemon tree here at Olive Tree Farm, but it is well established and a joy to see when it is dripping in gleaming yellow lemons. This recipe is one I came across a few years ago. It said it was an all in one, so I decided to give it a go. As long a s you e ns ure your butter is really soft, the end result is a very fluffy cake similar in texture to Angel cake. I bake it in a 6� round or s qua re tin, line d w ith baking parchment. Ingredients: Cake 115g soft butter 170g self-raising flour 1 teaspoon baking powder 170g caster sugar 2 large eggs 6 tablespoons of milk Grated zest of a large lemon For the topping: 4oz of caster sugar or icing sugar Juice of one large lemon Method: Tip all ingredients for the
FLUFFY CAKE: Drizzled in lemon sugar topping. cake into a mixing bowl and using an electric mixer/food processor, mix through for two-three minutes until it is all properly combined. Tip the mixture into your l i ned t i n and bake at 180 deg C for 30-40 minutes in the centre of the oven. Prick wi t h a wooden skewer i n t he cent r e of t he cake t o make sure it is baked at the end of your cooking time, if i t com es out cl ean i t i s cooked, if not pop it back in
for another four or five minutes. Once baked and whi l st your cake still hot, mix the sugar and lemon juice together. Remove your cake from the tin carefully and si t i t on a cool i ng r ack, pr i ck i t al l over wi t h a wooden skewer and drizzle over your lemon sugar topping.

Pause for perspective RECENT activity in Britain convinces me that humanity never changes, but today continues to exhibit all the failings so graphically described in the early pages of the Bible. So in Genesis 11 we read of a technically brilliant group of people, who were master builders, joining forces to build a giant tower, so tall it would give access to heaven itself. Now we know that they could never have succeeded in their ambition, heaven cannot be found by climbing or even flying to great height, but the real problem was their arrogance in presuming that their greatest human effort could ever attain the level of God. But try they did, though their efforts were thwarted as, we’re told God brought confusion on them through language, with none able to understand what others were saying, so the ‘Tower of Babel’ was never completed. Looking around, isn’t that what so often happens? We humans have a tendency to become arrogant, overconfident in our own abilities, convinced we can achieve anything by ourselves, that God is irrelevant as we can
manage alone. So often, that pride comes before a fall, as to our utter confusion we find disagreement and misunderstandings thwart our greatest ambitions. So now as I see the chaos and confusion in government, with few statesmen (or women) in evidence; little display of any real desire to serve or seek the best for the nation as a whole, and so little mutual respect, I find little to surprise in this modern-day form of Babel. How much we need to recognise God’s hand, that despite the general belief we humans control our own destiny, yet He still actually is in control. What a comfort that can be when so much seems so uncontrollable. But I find it helps my perspective on things when I remember the words in Isaiah 55 ‘For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts says the Lord.’ So let’s just leave all the worry with Him and carry on with life in the confident assurance that He knows best.

I’m paralysed.” Lucy, the Dog That Is Not Ours, stood rooted to the spot in the kitchen, splendidly dressed in her brand new attractive greenish-yellow jumper with a button-down collar and neatly rolled sleeves. I ignored her, and soon hunger overcame her mental paralysis - she ate. The sun set, the cold rose, I lit the log fire. She stood, mid-lounge, her eyes glued to me in heartbreaking appeal. “I can’t lie down. Not in my jumper.” I ignored her again, and eventually she lay - on the carpet, well away from the fire, shivering like a shorn sheep abandoned in the Arctic. “Lie in your bed, you’ll be much warmer.” “I can’t. Not in my jumper.” She con-
tinued shivering: I think she was making a point, rather than actually being cold. I went to bed, but during the night I crept in to check on her. She was lying on her bed, asleep! But in the morning I found her standing mid-carpet, shivering as hard as she could. “I couldn’t go to bed. I’ve had to stand up all night. I can’t sleep with my jumper on. I’m cold,” she lied, with a look that would melt the hearts of the sternest jury in the land. I took her jumper off, and she bounded joyfully out of the door into the breaking sub-zero dawn. She’s been gone for ages. I bet she’s looking for a new home with a permanently lit gas fire. And absolutely no dog jumpers!

Teenage vandal detained GUARDIA CIVIL detained an 18-year-old suspected of burning two vehicles in Olula del Rio and vandalising a religious shrine in Purchena. The structure next to Purchena’s San Gines Parish Church containing an image of the Virgen del Carmen was damaged back in December; the glass protecting the image was smashed, and the pedestal and the image itself were broken. Investigations led the Guardia Civil to believe the same person was responsible for deliberately setting a

It’s a busy time for FACE FACE (Fundraising in Arboleas, Caring for Everyone) has a busy few months ahead. The charity, which has just celebrated its 10th anniversary, has its Annual General Meeting and coffee morning next Friday, at 10am at the Hostel Meson in Arboleas. Anyone interested in finding out more about what this group of dedicated volunteers does, or who would like to join, is invited. FACE also has a quiz planned for Tuesday February 12 at the Bar Kubatin underneath the Hostel Meson. The event is to raise funds towards the p u r c h a s e o f a d e f i b r i l l a t o r, w h i c h i t i s hoped will be installed in Arboleas village at a site to be decided on by the local council. The event will start at 7.30pm. Teams of up to six are permitted and quiz entry will be €2.50 per person. Quiz master will be 89.8 Smooth Fm presenter Richard Bond,

INVESTMENT: Development Deputy Oscar Liria said the main aim of the road improvement investment is to strengthen the rural economy. EIGHT country lanes in the Los Velez region are earmarked for upgrades as part of an Almeria Provincial
Council investment programme. The council is putting €320,000 into projects for
eight roads in Velez-Rubio, Velez-Blanco, Chirivel and Maria, set to be carried out on seven kilometres in all. Development Deputy Oscar Liria maintained the investment would contribute towards the creation of direct and indirect employment, commenting, “We are improving access to farms and agricultural exploitations, which will make transport, worker safety and production easier.” He said the principal aim of the investment is ‘to strengthen the economy of the agricultural and livestock sectors.’

Apparently it’s all to do with reclaiming identity or the body; or is it both? Anyway, it makes a change from men making the mistake of trying to sport a moustache in November, grown for charity which is nice, but really fellas just hand over the cash and spare us all. Naturally much research has been undertaken on matters relating to health and one research firm Mintel has discovered most young British people cannot be bothered to lead a healthy lifestyle. Surprised? Though among those aged over 65 most (51 per cent) do as much as they can to live a healthy lifestyle. It may explain how they made it to 65 and beyond. While just 6 per cent of youngsters aged 25 or under, make any effort. Cost, lack of time, ‘doing all I can already’ or ‘it’s boring’ are among the top explanations given for not following healthy habits.

AS its name suggests, an abogado del estado is a state lawyer who is a civil servant serving Spain’s Public Administration. It’s a plum job and one formerly enjoyed by several ministers in Mariano Rajoy’s governments, including the former vicepresident Soraya Saenz de Santamaria and Dolores de Cospedal. De Cospedal - ex-Defence minister, exPartido Popular secretary general and erstwhile president of Castilla la Mancha - had no qualms about undertaking several shady operations which allegedly included using PP funding to spy on rival Javier Arenas. All this came to light after eternally ambitious de Cospedal was knocked out of the running in last summer’s PP primaries and what with one thing and another, she exited politics. And why not, when she had a cushy abogado del estado post attached to the Supreme Court in Madrid to return to. Didn’t that Roman chappie Juvenal say ‘Quis custodiet ipsos custodes? Who will watch the watchmen? Who indeed?

HEALTHY LIFESTYLE: Work out and eat in moderation. Though half (47 per cent) of the nation believe they are as fit as they need to be. Naturally enough, if you lack the motivation to live a healthy lifestyle the next best thing is to blame everyone else and demand ‘they’ do something about it. Most British (60 per cent) support the no-
tion of taxing ‘unhealthy’ food and drink. Some of us make our own puddings from actual basic ingredients rather than going down to the shops and buying processed foods. I make my own puddings so good luck with taxing me on that one.
Of course, many people are concerned about their appearance, most under 25’s (55 per cent) believe a healthy lifestyle would improve their appearance. Just being younger would improve mine. While a sense of emotional well-being is also seen as a positive result of a physically healthy lifestyle. A real surprise to me; apparently youngsters (76 per cent of under 25’s) want brands to reward them for living a healthy lifestyle. What on earth is driving that thought? As we step off in to the New Year a thought for the day, ‘moderation in all things.’ Walk by all means, go to the gym certainly, eat all you like and as much as you like, however be moderate. Instead of driving everywhere, find trips where you can park up a kilometre short of your destination and walk the rest of the way. Have a glass of water before you eat a meal, you will find that your appetite will ease back a little. Even using smaller plates will help you to eat less. Though of course the key one is always eat at a table and wherever possible eat with other people. Talking with friends as you eat is the best way to maintain a healthy body and mind. Though us oldies already know that.
Watching the watchers want January 2 to replace February 28 as Andalucia Day. The latter celebrates the region’s 1980 autonomy referendum while the 1492 date commemorates the day the Catholic Monarchs retook Andalucia from the Moors. It wasn’t done all that gently, but our 21st century niceties were absent more than 500 years ago, while it’s not necessary to share extreme Right-Wing views to concede that this was when Spain started to become Spain. Interestingly, in the Valencian Community no political parties have ever complained about celebrating Valencia Day on October 9.
What happened then? Jaime I, the Conquistador, took Valencia City from its Moorish rulers in 1238 after a five-month siege and although October 9 was always a day of celebration, it was officially adopted in 1976. Successive Valencian governments of all inclinations have accepted the day without hang-ups or guilt trips, possibly due to its proximity to October 12, Spain’s national holiday. This usually provides an opportunity for a puente or an exceptionally long weekend, a Spanish tradition which neither the PP,
Vox, PSOE or even Podemos would want or dare - to change.
Look the other way THE Partido Popular apparently finds it ‘worrying’ that exiled Iranians should have financed Vox’s campaign in the last European elections. Possibly what most worries the PP isn’t that the funding occurred, but that it came to light. On its own past record, all money - any money regardless of its provenance - was never worrying and always acceptable.
The swinger IN Sweden two of the country’s four conservative parties are supporting the Social Democrat prime minister Stefan Lofven, the most-voted in the September 9 elections. They are doing this to isolate the Extreme Right, prompting Spain’s president Pedro Sanchez to comment ‘others could learn from the Swedish agreement.’ That’s one lesson not included in the textbook used by Spain’s principal Conservative party. Or Ciudadanos, come to that which in coming months must decide whether its orientation is Centre or Right. And Albert Rivera must decide if he wants to swing not both ways, but three.

with conventional steel or aluminium structures. The result is a weight penalty of only 50kg over the Coupé, which contributes to a lightest dry weight of just 1,297kg for the Spider. This is at least 80kg less than any direct competitor and the equivalent power-to-weight ratio of 463PS-per-tonne underpins astonishing levels of performance and dynamic prowess. Enhancing the Sports Series Longtail experience with open-air motoring is as easy as pushing a button to lower or raise the three-piece, powered retractable hardtop roof at speeds of up to 40km/h (25mph). With the roof lowered, occupants benefit not only from wind in their hair, but also the memorable aural and visual drama provided by the top-exit exhausts which are unique to the 600LT. An electrically-
operate d , glazed wind deflector can be activated independently of the hardtop to reduce buffeting or increase ventilation, or to allow more of the exhaust sound into the cabin. ROAD TEST by Nick Fletcher INFINITI is a stand-alone brand which is in effect a luxury division of Nissan. Established almost 30 years ago, Infiniti models were initially sold only in the USA but in recent years have been available across Europe and have built up a significant niche market. The latest model is the QX30, an SUV-style five-door hatchback which has a lot of visual presence and because of lower sales volume, is more exclusive than rivals such as the Audi Q3 and BMW X1. There are two versions, starting at €32,417 (£28,950) and both use a 2.2-litre 168hp diesel engine with seven-speed automatic gearbox and standard fourwheel drive. Even the entry-level Luxe model gets cruise control with speed limiter, alloy wheels, roof rails, touch-screen infotainment centre, Bluetooth, USB ports and smartphone connectivity, rear parking sensors and safety features including lane departure warning, and forward collision

The dashboard is well laid out with controls which are easy to understand and use. Rear seat accommodation is a little less spa-
cious as the sloping roofline compromises headroom for taller passengers. Boot space is very good at 430 litres. Underway, the car has very good driving dynamics and the combination of diesel engine and auto transmission works very smoothly. The steering feel is slightly heavier than some SUVs but this does provide extra reassurance when cornering, and overall the handling and ride quality are excellent. The 0-100kph time is 8.5 seconds, top speed 215kph (134mph) and average fuel economy 18.5kpl (52.3mpg). Emissions are 143g/km. Summing up, the Infiniti QX30 is a very appealing package which has particular attraction for the discerning buyer who wants a more exclusive image and is backed by the robust reliability record of the Nissan parent company.

Li ke t he BMW pr oduction engines, the P48 is a turbo-charged, straight twolitre engine with direct fuel injection. The exhaust system had to be redesigned completely for the new turbo engine. The BMW M4 DTM, in accor dance wi t h Cl ass 1 r egul at i ons, has a m uch shorter exhaust pipe on only the right side of the car. The end of t he exhaust pipe is located towards the centre of the door, next to t he vent s. Unl i ke i n t he past, there is no second exhaust pipe on the left side. Push-to-pass The DTM has introduced a push-to-pass function for the first time in 2019. At the touch of a button, drivers can cal l on up t o 30PS of extra engine power. This is possible using an additional standard part, the fuel flow restrictor. The increase in power is achieved
by t em por ar i l y al l owi ng more fuel to be injected into the four cylinders of the P48 turbo engine. Rear wing/DRS The rear wing of the BMW M4 DTM is 520 millimetres wider than that on the 2018 car. It also has just one section. The DTM adopt ed t he concept of the standard part from the Japanese Super GT Cham pi onshi p. The r ear wing still has DRS (Drag Reduction System), in the f or m of a pneum at i c f l ap mechanism, which reduces the amount of aerodynamic drag generated by the car. Car weight The mandatory weight of the new BMW M4 DTM when empty is now less than 1,000 kg. The car must now weigh a minimum 981kg without driver or fuel. That is 50kg less than last season. The combination of more engine power and less weight means the BMW M4 DTM has a significantly lower power to weight ratio of 1.6kg/hp. Thi s shoul d ensur e t he car s r each t he 300km / h mark on the fastest sections of track on the DTM calendar, such as the Parabolica at the Hockenheimring. Front splitter The pr ot r usi on of t he front splitter has been reduced by up to 90 millimet r es. Thi s m odi f i cat i on makes the BMW M4 DTM more robust in wheel-towheel battles.

Nadal bests Berdych MALLORCAN tennis player Rafael Nadal bested rival Tomas Berdych in the Australian Open last weekend, making it through to the quarter final played earlier this week. Nadal, 32, beat 33-yearold Berdych by 6-0, 6-1 and 7-6 in a match that lasted two hours and five minutes. He was set to face Frances

Fight night BRITAIN’S Navid Mansouri is set to take on Spain’s Jorge Fortea in Marbella on Saturday February 16 in the IBF’s Intercontinental Championship. Mansouri, 29, from Marbella, last fought in November against Bogdan Mitic in Torremolinos. The sup-welterweight beat Mitic in that match and six others previously. The night is also set to feature a fight between Marbella’s Ion Costin and Brandom ‘El Pollito,’ from Mijas, who are facing off in an Andalucia Championship. Both are sup-featherweights. There are also set to be four international fights between cruiserweights Alvaro Terrero and Joe Sheriff, middleweights Antonio Gomez and Abdel Aziz and cruiserweights Rafael Seclia ‘Aquiles’ and Jose Luis Garbei. Middleweight Rafik El Argelind is also set to make an appearance, with his opponent yet to be decided. There are also set to be six amateur boxing matches at the event. The Brindle Bowl Hong Kong Pairs CABRERA Lawn Bowling Club hosted The Brindle Bowl Hong Kong Pairs between January 17 and 20. The Brindle Bowl, although a pairs competition, is played on a slightly different format with each of the two players of the team taking it in turns to lead and skip. The first player bowls two woods, the second player bowls all four woods and then the first player bowls their last two woods. A very interesting format. There were some very good rounds and closely contested matches, but the standout pairs throughout the competition were Sandra and Peter Marriott, who had won this competition in 2017 and 2018, and Bob and Penny Craig, who de-
