PM holds on By Joe Gerrard BRITISH Prime Minister Theresa May has survived a no confidence motion but British expatriates in Spain were left facing uncertainty after her Brexit deal was voted down. MPs voted to back the government in the motion tabled by Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn. The motion came roughly 24 hours after Parliament voted down the Prime Minister’s Brexit deal by a margin of 432 to 202, the largest defeat of any government since 1924. May said yesterday (Wednesday) that she would present a new version of her deal to MPs within the week. The EU has repeatedly ruled out renegotiations. The rejection of May’s deal, which included protections for British citizens legally registered in EU countries including Spain, leaves expatriates in an uncertain situation. Anne Hernandez, president of the Brexpats in Spain expatriate advocacy group, told Euro Weekly News she was “extremely concerned.” “There are more than 300,000 British people here who work and have invested

A holy sight THIS picture from inside one of Spain’s most famous holy buildings will give you plenty to contemplate as the world prepares to mark International Religion Day tomorrow (Friday). The Mezquita-Catedral de Cordoba (Mosque-Cathedral of Cordoba) has been revered as a religious site by both Catholics and Muslims. It is now called the Catedral de Nuestra Señora de la Asuncion (Cathedral of our Lady of the Assumption).

A Visigothic church built in honour of St Vincent the Third is believed to have been the first structure to stand on the site of the current Mezquita-Catedral. After the arrival of the Muslim Moors in Spain, which became Al-Andalus in the eighth century, the church was split into Christian and Muslim areas. It was then bought by Emir Abd al-Rahman I and torn down to make way for the then Mosque in 784. The Mosque underwent several alterations over the following

Life-saving actions THE quick thinking of two police officers and a firefighter reportedly saved the life of a client at a gym in Palma who suffered a heart attack while working out. Local Policemen Jaime Bosch and Mateo Crespi, together with fireman Pep Prats, were also training at S’Aigua Blava gym when a man using a stationary bicycle suddenly ‘cried out,’ before hitting the ground and convulsing.

Pep told Spanish press the man had begun to turn blue so he requested the first aid kit, the Oxidoc and defibrillator, while the police officers performed chest compressions. An ambulance then arrived and paramedics took control of the situation, while praising the trio for their actions. The patient ‘remained in a coma’ for a few days, but is said to be recovering well.

By Tara Rippin SOME 78 homeless people have been registered in Palma in the last two years after the City Council gave ‘those without a roof’ the chance to use town hall properties as a ‘fixed address.’ Councillor Merce Borras said 23 people are registered at the town hall, while the remaining 55 people have been assigned the addresses of one of 10 Social Services of the Consistory centres. Borras explained it is ‘more practical for them if they live near any of these centres, for the schooling of children, if any, or for visiting the doctor.’ The possibility of ‘registration for people without a roof’ or those living in infrastructures such as shanties, became a reality in January 2017. The then mayor of Palma, Jose Hila, said in Palma ‘there can be no first and second class citizens and above all there cannot be invisible citizens’. He argued registering homeless people is a ‘human rights issue’ and makes a more dignified life available to them.

Hospital overload MALLORCA’S public hospitals and primary care emergency services dealt with a total of 24,308 emergencies last week; 7,505 hospital cases and 16,803 in primary healthcare centres. Approximately 12 per cent of the hospital emergencies required patients being admitted, while the island’s medical centres reported 936 episodes of flu. Although the general figures seem high, this is in fact a slight reduction on cases recorded from the same week last year, which saw 27,212 emergencies; 8,819 in hospitals and 18,393 in primary healthcare centres, where 2,506 cases of flu were reported.

Additionally, the 061 Salut Respon information service recorded 46 telephone consultations, with queries regarding pharmaceutical drugs, feverish symptoms in adults, breathing difficulties and vomiting being the most common. According to the Sentinel Influenza Network of the Epidemiological Service in the Balearic Islands, the flu rate between December 31 and January 6 was 40.3 for every 100,000 inhabitants. Whilst this figure is lower than the State average of 47.6, it is still higher than the epidemic threshold figure of 35.35.

Arrest imminent A SUSPECTED burglar who may be responsible for five house break-ins in Pollensa at the weekend has been identified and is expected to be arrested shortly. The Guardia Civil intensified its investigation on Sunday, and the Benemerita, in charge of the inquiry, is confident the culprit will be brought in for questioning soon. The first of the house raids occurred around 7pm on Saturday at a villa near the tapestry factory of Can Morato.

Knife attack A SECURITY guard at the Intermodal Train Station in Palma had a lucky escape after a kitchen knifewielding man allegedly tried to stab him on Saturday afternoon. According to Local Police who have arrested the suspect, the individual is known to sit and drink near the station entrance, and insult passers-by. On the latest occasion, the Spanish man, in his mid-40’s, was seen urinating in public and hurling abuse at people who confronted him about his actions. The head of private security immediately asked him to leave, and accompanied him outside. B u t m i n u t e s l a t e r, the suspect came back with a knife and ‘pounced on the g u a r d , ’ t h re a t e n i n g him. Other guards m a n a g e d t o re s t r a i n the offender and snatch the knife from him. Police officers arr i v e d a n d a n a r re s t was made.

Status call THE environmental group GOB has asked the City Council of Alcudia to declassify La Victoria as a developable land in the Pinares de Bonaire urbanisation, which it sees as unviable, so that the entire area is protected.

Football fans in violent clashes THE National Police dealt with several fights between fans of RCD Mallorca and RCD La Coruña football clubs at the weekend. At about 7.45pm on Saturday, close to the stadium, an altercation between supporters of the two teams

led to fans of the visiting team receiving minor injuries. Once the match had ended, police officers accompanied Deportivo de la Coruña followers to the exit of the stadium, where there was a verbal confrontation with Mallorca fans,

during which both sides reportedly ‘exchanged threats and insults.’ At 12.30am, at the junction of Cami del Reis and Camí Sa Vileta, there was another fight between ‘a radical part’ of both groups of supporters. According to a police source, fans

from both sides were ‘attacked with kicks and punches in a violent manner which motivated the rapid police intervention.’ A number of fans of the two teams were identified and face fines of up to €3,000 each.

BALEARIC airports have a daily average of 100 more flights this winter than last. Palma’s Son Sant Joan has seen increases of 6.8 and 13.6 per cent in October and November respectively.

Bar kiosk THE Palma ombudsman’s office has received a complaint about the concession for the Alaska bar kiosk in Placa Mercat which apparently expired in 2007 after it was denounced for breaches of safety and accessibility regulations.

First snow THE first snow of the year in Palma fell last Wednesday as temperatures dropped below freezing prompting emergency services to issue a warning to drivers to use snow chains in mountains above 500 metres.

ATTACKED: Three doctors were assaulted by a patient.

Assault on hospital staff A PATIENT attacked doctors at Manacor Hospital after having had a minor operation minutes earlier. While in the recovery suite after successful surgery, the man reportedly began insulting staff and threatened to kill someone. The situation escalated and the patient allegedly exchanged blows with one of the surgeons and tried to attack another.

The female surgeon ran through the corridors, with the man in pursuit, before locking herself in a toilet. National Police arrived and arrested the patient who was ‘still being aggressive.’ Medical sources claim there had been no issues with the male while he was being operated on and ruled out any possibilities that he may have been affected by the anaesthetic.

THE Ministry of Social Services and Co-operation has opened its new headquarters in Inca. The three-storey building in Calle Ramon Llull has been adapted for people with reduced mobility and is much larger than the previous site. From here, people can access all services offered by the Ministry of Social Services and Co-operation, such as care, information and guidance to the publ i c ; t h e a t t e n t i o n a n d assessment services of the dependency and disability and the care services in relation to minors and families, as well as any procedure related to the services and benefits managed by the department.

Resort’s changing image

HOTSPOT: Calle Punta Ballena has over the years been a main destination for young tourists. THE number of young tourists heading for Magalluf has halved in the last five years. Figures released by the Palmanova-Magalluf Hoteliers Association show that in 2013 a third of holidaymakers in the resort were from the young and student sector. But in 2018, this was down to 16 per cent with Magalluf attracting more families, couples and senior citizens. The change in trend has been attributed to the town hall and hoteliers together

with tour operators who have stopped promotions aimed at large groups of young people. One of the various town hall initiatives has been to practically put an end to booze cruise party boats by making it impossible for them to dock in Magalluf. The Hoteliers Association president, Sebastian Darder, claims a shift in business attitude has also been crucial in transforming Magalluf into a relaxed and safer resort, and praised the project led by Melia to reposition the resort

in terms of quality, reputation and security. He added that a lack of investment and vision combined with a reputation for being ‘a resort for tourists who want to get drunk’ previously took its toll on Magalluf. But it now has hotel occupancy rates which exceed 90 per cent in the high season and attracts a clientele which has ‘greater spending power and is therefore much more profitable for the municipality and the community.’

A DEAL has been struck which will allow British citizens in Spain and Spanish citizens in Britain to vote and stand in local elections after Brexit, Spain’s Foreign Minister said. Josep Borrell said the pact covers the 240,000 British citizens registered as residents in Spain and the roughly 150,000 Spanish people in Britain. Spanish government sources have also confirmed diplomats from Madrid and London are in the process of closing off the deal. Borrell said: “Bilateral agreements between Spain and Britain will guarantee that Spaniards who are living there and Britons here will maintain will their rights, even the right to vote in municipal elections.” The deal aims to maintain current EU arrangements covering voting. It is similar to agreements Spain has with Norway, New Zealand and some Latin American countries. British ambassador Simon Manley was set to formally announce the deal this week. It comes as Borrell said Madrid was making plans for Brexit, including a no-deal scenario which the Foreign Minister said would be a ‘catastrophe.’

Residency call By Joe Gerrard & Dilip Kuner BRITAIN’S Consul for southern Spain has urged expatriates from the country to make sure their residency (residencia) arrangements are in order as the official date for Brexit draws closer. Charmaine Arbouin told an expatriate Brexit meeting, any guarantees made to British citizens in Spain would only apply to those legally residing in Spain. All EU citizens living in a member state which is not their home country are legally required to register if they want to stay longer than 90 days regardless, the Consul added. It comes as the government’s defeat in Tuesday’s vote on the deal amplified an already uncertain situation for Britain and for its citizens at home and abroad. “The Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez has said he wants all people living here to continue to do so with a minimum of fuss. World first RESTORATION Mallorca, in collaboration with the Balearic Islands Government, has launched the world’s first championship of bread with oil. The main objective of the contest is to promote the islands’ simple but elaborate signature dish. This championship will take

Dream come true by Tara Rippin A BRAVE little boy who underwent a heart transplant has fulfilled his dream of being a pilot thanks to Guardia Civil officers who treated the four-year-old to a day at their airfield in Madrid. Young Javier’s mother wrote a letter to the police force, explaining that her son had spent months looking at the sky in search of a helicopter ‘which would bring his new heart’. Once the operation was completed,

A spokesperson for the Guardia Civil said watching out for helicopters had kept the little boy ‘firm and animated.’ They added: “His mother told us he wanted to be able to ride on one of them, to see from above what he observed so many afternoons from below.” The youngster was accompanied by his parents, three brothers and his grandfather.

Stabbing death A FIFTY-YEAR-OLD man has been arrested on suspicion of stabbing his ex-partner to death on Saturday afternoon. According to police reports, the 47-year-old victim received 10 stab wounds during the attack at her home in Fuengirola. The couple’s 16-year-old son was also attacked and sustained two cuts to the neck.

Man ‘beat partner’ A MAN who allegedly beat and tried to suffocate his partner during a ‘violent row,’ before threatening to cut her seven-year-old son’s throat if he tried to call the police, has been arrested. After hearing the woman’s ‘calls for help’ a neighbour called the Local Police of Vigo just before 3am last Thursday morning. On arrival, officers reportedly heard a ‘violent argument’ taking place and a woman pleading not to be hit, and begging to be let out. The 46-year-old eventually agreed to open the door and was arrested for a ‘crime of gender violence.’ The victim was treated by paramedics at her home. Her son, from a previous relationship, was not physically hurt.

Tragic ending to romantic getaway LAURA SANZ NOMBELA from Toledo was one of four people who died during a suspected gas explosion in central Paris. The 38-year-old mother of three had been swept off by her husband for a romantic weekend, and after their first night in the French capital she was getting dressed in front of the window. “The curtains were drawn,” her father said afterwards. “She was putting on her jersey when the explosion happened in the Hubert bakery in front of the hotel.” The blast tore away the window frame and hit Laura’s head while her husband, Luis Miguel, was slammed against the bed. Bullying figures up A TOTAL of 5,500 cases of bullying in Spain were recorded between 2012 and 2017, a hike of 1,054 on the previous five years. The figures, relating to school and college pupils up to the age of 17, were collected from all the Spanish autonomous communities, with the exception of Cataluña and the Basque Country. Andalucia recorded the most cases of bullying in 2017 with 255, followed by the community of Madrid with 170, Valencia region 129 and the Canary Islands with 100 cases. These were the only four regions which saw more than 100 cases in one year. At the opposite end of the scale, Navarra and La Rioja recorded four in 2017.

SPAIN’S utility bills increased by 26 per cent between 2010 and 2017, according to a study by the EAE Business School in Barcelona, making Spain the most expensive country in Europe for electricity. The average price of electric here is €0.21 per kilowatt hour, meaning costs quickly mount up as temperatures drop. One way to avoid high electricity bills, however, is to use energy-saving tactics. According to one price comparison website Kelisto.es, it is possible to save up to €200 a year by replacing traditional light bulbs with LED ones, switching older appliances for ones with a maximum energy efficiency rating, and not leaving appliances on standby. Money can also be saved by sealing doors and windows as up to 30 per cent of heat is lost this way. Use timers for

heaters, so you only use energy when you need it most, or install a smart meter to monitor how much electric you use, and also help keep costs down. Finally, it often pays to shop around so why not check out a price comparison website to see whether you are getting the best utility deal for your money. Sites such as Iberswitch.com, kelisto.es, or comparadorofertasener gia.cnmc.es allow you to compare tariffs and help you switch companies if you could get a better deal elsewhere. Climate plan for big firms SPANISH government officials have said they will make all companies listed on the country’s stock exchange, detail their impact on the environment as part of wider climate change plans. The new rules are due to apply to companies regardless of which industry or sector they are in. Similar rules have previously applied to large energy firms. The measures come as part of the government’s National Integrated Energy and Climate Plan which officials hope to pass by decree.

Union opposes job cut plan A SPANISH trade union has said it will fight plans from a British telecommunications company to cut worker numbers in Spain by up to around 24 per cent. The UGT said Vodafone’s plan to slash up to 1,200 jobs was ‘unnecessary and wrong’ and that staff were not responsible for the firm’s performance. Around 5,100 people work for the company’s Spanish arm. It comes as the London-based company sent an Employment Regulation File (ERE) to three trade unions detailing plans to dismiss staff after a fall in revenue last year. The Spanish division’s British parent company the Vodafone Group announced plans to cut its European costs by €1.2 billion in the next three years last November. Vodafone Spain posted falls in revenue of 3.2 per cent from April to September 2018. Gross operating profits fell by 27.8 per cent during the same period.

SPAIN has come second in European countries in the amount invested in its hotel sector last year despite money coming into tourist hotspot Barcelona falling by almost half. Data from the CBRE industry consultant showed investment in the Spanish hotel industry reached around €4.9 billion in 2018, up 33 per cent on the previous year. Investment in Barcelona stood at €232 million, a drop of 45 per cent believed to have been brought on by ongoing uncertainty over the Catalan independence issue.

EU benefit CUT: Calviño has cut GDP forecasts. SPANISH Gross Domestic Product (GDP) is predicted to grow by 2.2 per cent this year, 0.1 per cent less than initially predicted, according to the country’s Economy Minister. Nadia Calviño said the revision was due to the government being forced to aim for a faster cutting of Spain’s government spending deficit. “If we had stuck to our deficit reduction target we

would have revised the prediction for GDP upward,” Calviño said. The government is now aiming to cut the deficit to 1.3 per cent of GDP after previously aiming for 1.8 per cent. The change came after the conservative Partido Popular (PP), which has an outright majority in the Spanish Senate, threatened to block the budget if deficit reduction targets were relaxed.

SPAIN has received almost €8.1 billion from the EU for 110 projects under the bloc’s Strategic Investment Plan, according to data from the European Commission which found that the country came fourth in terms of those who benefitted most.

Growth plan BASQUE telecommunications firm Euskaltel said it hopes to attract some 90,000 customers in the next four years with plans to move into Cantabria, Cataluña, La Rioja, Leon and Navarra which chief executive Francisco Arteche said was a ‘natural step.’

Media firm fine threat SPAIN’S competition watchdog has said it will fine two leading media companies by up to €30 million after ruling they abused their dominant market position, unless they stop their practices. The National Commission of Markets and Competition (CNMC) claimed Mediaset and Atresmedia both worked to carve up the Spanish television advertising market between them.

The claims follow a 10-month investigation. The CNMC alleged the firms made advertisers and media agencies obey a minimum quota for their channels under a system of bonuses and penalties. Such a move would be illegal under market competition rules. The companies claim the practices are commonplace in the industry and added they would take the case to Spain’s National Court if they are sanctioned.

LEAPY LEE SAYS IT OTHERS THINK IT I CANNOT believe I’m having to waste a part of the blurb to yet again correct a misquote in a reader’s letter to the EWN. Some weeks ago, in similar circumstances I received a published apology for being almost libelously misquoted in a missive concerning the Grenfell Tower tragedy. Well, last week it happened again. In a recent column, when I was citing an example of what I considered PC racism. I wrote. ‘The portraits (of historical figures) were replaced by one of a lion and another painted by a local artist, of a black woman Henrietta Lacks.’ Unquote. At no time did I sarcastically state that ‘she was a black lady who died in 1950 and is still alive today’!? Many thanks for all the information I have received concerning this unusual and extremely unfortunate lady, whose cell cultures have apparently saved many cancer victims, but please, before you put ‘pen to paper,’ just check the column in question and endeavour to not exaggerate the copy in an effort to undermine this ol’ boy’s hard-fought reputation. Awright! I see another youngster has been stabbed to death in what appears to be a gang-related murder in London. I in no way mean to undermine the tragedy of this 14-year old’s death. But, despite the usual wailing and expressions of grief

THUGS: Taking over city streets. from family and friends of what a ‘lovely, well liked young man he was,’ I’m afraid the subsequent ‘selfies’ published on the media of this young man tell a different story. In self-confessed ‘trapper’ (street slang for drug courier) mode, showing him masked and hooded, astride a moped, clutching fistfuls of £50 and

£20 notes and making a gun sign, rather sullies the insistence by his mother that he was a ‘loving, caring boy, who had no connection with drug gangs.’ Yet another family would appear to be in denial of their offspring running riot and fuelling the violence and gang culture which is afflict-

ing Mayor Khan’s London. Talking generally about the gang-related violence that seems to be on the up, it is surely the job of families to keep their children on the straight and narrow. If families would do their jobs and give more love and attention to their children, instead of in many cases using them as benefit cows and letting them run riot and undisciplined around gang infested streets, they may go some way to easing the problem. As it is these young boys and girls will continue to turn to the adult gangsters to try and retain some semblance of belonging and cohabitation among people who at least give the appearance of caring. It’s the families of these youngsters that need to get their acts together. Waiting till their offspring either suffer (or instigate) horrific deaths, before they announce to the world how much they ‘loved and cared’ for them, is too late. Children need to be consistently convinced and assured of these feelings from day one. They need to have it demonstrated by routine and the security of family life. Scammers trick targets into believing that their loved ones are in dire financial need, or that they require money for medical treatment. Last year, one in 10 young folks fell for it to the tune of more than €500 each on average, according to a recent study. One in 20 of the older folks shelled out just under €200. Lest the wrinklies become too smug, they do indeed get caught more by criminals pretending to be household-name companies. I have a neighbour with a serious vision problem; it was obscured by dollar signs, or why else would he have handed over half his savings

But ‘scareware’ attacks are increasingly common, leading victims to install the suggested virus remover on their computer which then surrenders its control to the hijacker and money changes hands. Most times you can safely ignore any virus warning which isn’t from your trusted antivirus program (you have got one installed, right?). If the spoof virus warning freezes your machine (it happens), just use the failsafe option; reboot your computer. Can’t do that either, at least the usual way? Then it’s emergency-stop time; simply hold down the physical power button until the computer powers off. Odds are it’s hasta la vista ‘virus’ when you start up again.

So many people I know leave the island in January it’s like the Marie Celeste (in reference to an American merchant brigantine, discovered adrift and deserted in the Atlantic Ocean in 1872). A combination of off-season, not much happening (apart from San Sebastian fiesta in Palma) and chillier weather sends everyone to Son Joan airport to see what is flying. Some people who have worked all over the festive season take a well-earned break while we are joined by our lovely Spanish pensionistas who set up camp in hotels for the winter. As a radio presenter and voiceover artist, I am used to talking to myself so it doesn’t bother me. I am perfectly happy in an empty room blethering away. I recently narrated a book about some fantasy world of magicians and warring empires and I confess, for the five days recording I had no idea what I was saying. This is the time of year when so many people make a determined effort to change lifestyle patterns. It’s the old adage of joining the gym but only actually going there twice. These behavioural changes fail because people feel that they ‘should’ do something, even though they don’t really want to. They do not have free will so they rebel; against themselves. Mike Senker In my opinion Views of a Grumpy Old Man I AM writing this article on January 10 and the reason I’m telling you the date is that I want to know when is the official time to stop wishing everyone you meet, happy New Year. For me, it’s all done and dusted by January 6. The Xmas tree is down - not that we had one up in the first place - and as we are in Spain, Three Kings is a great guide. I actually think it sometimes looks sad when you drive around and see the Christmas lights still up. It’s back to normal and to double prove it pop in to a department store and see all the presents you bought, now at half price in the sales! I am a meat eater and I enjoy it, and to be honest I am getting a bit fed up by being attacked by my vegan friends. Why do you think you are so much better than me? Why do you think it’s OK to preach to me? If you don’t want to eat meat or fish or anything else that’s up to you and jolly good luck to you. But please stop preaching how healthy you are because you are a vegan. I have news for

you; some of the food you are eating is not as healthy as you think. I looked at vegan burgers which are full of processed fats like soyabean oil. Some contain MSG which is a terrible ingredient found a lot in Chinese food and can give you night horrors. So I’ll stick to my wagyu burgers thank you. The same applies with spreads; check what’s in them. I have to add here that if you are a vegan because of the concern for animals I do not have any argument with that. It’s just the ‘I’m healthier than you’ brigade. Another thing is ‘Oi Greggs, there is no such thing as a vegan sausage roll!’ It either is a sausage roll or it’s a pastry filled with ‘something’ but it’s not a sausage. Since protein is scarce when you avoid animal products, soy products like edamame, tofu, soy protein powder, and tempeh are often the replacements. The reality is that soy protein is very difficult to digest, a thyroid suppressive and estrogenic due to phytoestrogens. It also contains high levels of phytic acid which cause less absorption of nutrients, as well as trypsin inhibitors which can interfere with digestion. So that’s you told. I’m bracing myself for some serious rows about this. Here’s a question for you: How can you tell if someone is a vegan? Don’t worry, they will tell you.

More live music please ONE of my New Year’s resolutions this year (as well as the usual promises to myself that I will maybe try and shift a bit of weight!), is that I have promised myself to get out and see more live music. When I say live music, I mean proper live music, singers and bands, with instruments, who can actually play and sing. Musicians who have actually learnt their craft and have rehearsed enough so that they know their repertoire and can perform it without spending their time on stage staring at an iPad or music stand. There are some fabulous venues around and a lot of great gigs. It’s a wonderful thing to go out and be entertained by a band, especially when they are more imaginative with their setlist. I recently saw three different bands in two weeks, and their setlists were

virtually identical. There are some talented musicians around: surely it’s not much to ask for a few surprises? With the odd exception, I won’t be going out to see singers singing solely to backing tracks, glorified Karaoke singers. I can go to a Karaoke night for that!

Unfair pensions I AM pleased to see that the Spanish government is proposing to increase the pension for OAPs without restrictions, it would seem. Not so our UK government. How so, I hear you ask. Last April a new pension rate was introduced of £164.35 per week, £657.36 per month, £8,545.68 per year. Great, so far so good. But wait, if you were born before April 1951 you don’t get it, you stick on the old rate. So, if you are 67 tough. In my case I’m down £803.92 per year. I only found this information out through my company pension news sheet. How many of your readers are over 67? How many know they have been ripped off and by how much? I send this to Leapy as I love his column and no UK publication would print any of this, but I believe he would like to let readers know, in case they have not yet noticed due to the fluctuations of the pound against the Euro. I LIVE in Carvajal, Fuengirola for six months of the year. I have owned an apartment there for the last 16 years. One thing that spoils our visit to the lovely beach is seeing people extinguishing their cigarettes out in the sand. My wife and I are both smokers, we always take some sort of container with us to the beach to extinguish our cigarettes, then dispose of it at the end of the day in one of the many bins. The worst days are on a Sunday, when large families come to the beach and a lot of them discard their cooking oil, cigarettes, etc onto the beach. Can you imagine what the hundreds of thousands of cigarettes per year do to the sand? The colour of the sand would, I imagine, turn several shades lighter in time. In Portugal they have signs by the beach asking people to ‘respect the environment.’ The beaches are in pristine condition. It would not cost a fortune to put similar signs on the Spanish beaches. I am hoping that the appropriate Spainish authorities might take some action if they read this article. Bill (full name supplied)

UNCERTAINTIES surrounding Brexit show no sign of going away, but one thing we can be sure of is the importance of registering as a resident in Spain. British envoys including the country’s consul in southern Spain Charmaine Arbouin have called on expatriates to make sure they get their arrangements in order to safeguard their position post-Brexit. The consul told Euro Weekly News that only registered British residents could be sure their rights would be protected after Britain leaves the EU. Being properly registered as a resident in Spain will make your situation here more secure and it could save you a bureaucratic headache after Brexit which is due this March. The queue for registrations is likely to grow as we get closer to the planned Friday March 29 withdrawal date. If you need to get your residency you should aim to do so sooner rather than later. Residency, known as residencia in Spanish law, is not the same as fiscal tax residency. You may be down as a tax resident but this will not give you the protection that residencia does. Being registered in Spain will not only help you, but it will also benefit your local authority. Funding for local services including the police, fire brigade and ambulances is allocated depending on how many people are on the padron, a town’s register of its residents.

Stunning landscapes WHILE Spain is already world famous for its weather, wine, food, and relaxed vibe, the country also offers some incredible landscapes to rival other parts of the globe. One such incredible area is the pink salt lake at Torrevieja, Alicante, otherwise known as the Laguna Salada de Torrevieja or Laguna Rosa de Torrevieja. this natural phenomenon occurs due to a mixture of algae and bacteria, giving the water a bright pink hue. Nature-lovers would normally have to travel to Africa, Australia, or China to experience this sight, yet Torrevieja, well-placed for its amenities, sea, and night life, is the perfect place to see this highly-photogenic wonder. Similarly, the Riotinto in Huelva, Andalucia, offers the chance to see a unique orange and red coloured river, which gains its unusual colour from high levels of iron.

The area does not just offer a chance to see nature at its rarest, the site is also historically important, with parts of the river having been mined for thousands of years for copper, silver, gold, and other valuable metals. In around 3,000 BC, the Iberians began mining the site, and later the Phoenicians, Greeks, Romans, Visigoths, and Moors. Good returns

MADRID has been named as one of the top five European cities to invest in in 2019. Spain’s capital came in fourth in the list of top investment cities in a report compiled by major consultancy firm PwC together with the Land Urban Institute. The organisations carried out a survey of real estate agencies, financial institutions, investment funds, and other professional investors to find out which locations offered the best return on money. Madrid climbed up the list from fifth place in 2 0 1 8 , r e f l e c t i n g S p a i n ’s g r o w i n g e c o n o m y a n d

thriving property market. Previous figures released last year also showed Madrid was leading the way on construction of new homes. In the capital, 6,448 new properties were built l a s t y e a r, m a k i n g u p o n e o f t h e f o u r r e g i o n s o f Spain which account for 61.5 per cent of all of Spain’s new properties. Across the rest of Europe, the continent’s best city for investors was nearby Lisbon, Portugal, according to the report, while Berlin, Germany came in second, Dublin, Ireland, third, and Frankfurt, Germany, in fifth.

Income boom A REPORT has showed that Spain’s economy continues to improve, with income from property tax on the rise. A recent study by the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) showed Spain’s income from tax collection has almost reached the pre-financial crisis figures of 2007. In 2017, the last year for which figures were available, Spain’s government received €256,000 million in taxes, close to the record high of more than €263,000 million in 2007. Experts say the increase is due partly to the increase in taxes connected

with property ownership as the property market improves. In 2007, the government collected more than €32,000 million in these taxes, €13,000 million of which was paid in IBI (Spain’s property tax). That figure fell considerably to a record low of €21,000 million in 2011 as the property market stalled, but is almost back to the pre-crisis high, with €29,400 million paid in 2017, up from €28,600 million the year before. In fact, taxes related to property ownership have continued to rise steadily since 2012, in line with mar-

ket growth. The OECD report also contained other evidence of Spain’s return to economic prosperity, with personal income tax rising considerably in 2017. Around €85,600 million was collected that year, a marked increase on the previous record high of €80,000 million in 2007. Income from IVA and other taxes linked to goods and services also exceeded €110,000 million for the first time in 2017, reflecting a return in consumer confidence, and a strengthening sales market.

Never to old to be a maverick FOR more than three decades I have received an ‘egotistical’ year-end newsletter from a friend and ex-colleague, Barbara Smoker. Sent by ‘snail mail’ to her many friends, relations and admirers, her entertaining letters detail what she’s been up to in the previous year. They are proof positive that age is no obstacle to an active and productive life, for Barbara, a writer and activist on many radical issues, is still gamely engaged in various campaigns, despite having turned 95 last June. In several of her missives, Barbara informed her readers that she was working on a memoir, and when I received her latest letter, I was overjoyed to learn that she had finally completed it, and that My Godforsaken Life: Memoir of a Maverick, had just been published. I first met Barbara in the 1970’s when I was a member of the AntiApartheid Movement, a gay rights ac-

BARBARA SMOKER: At the forefront of radical movements for 70 years. tivist, and a new recruit to the National Secular Society (NSS), of which she was President. Around 20 years on, when I became the 15th editor of the Freethinker mag-

azine, Barbara took on the role of proofreader and periodic contributor. When I last saw Barbara, it was at a Secularist of the Year function in London in 2017, where I was presented

with a Lifetime’s Achievement Award for my campaigning against racism, homophobia and the presence of religion in government and places of learning. She looked marvellous, as the picture in this column shows. But what I did is nothing compared to what Barbara accomplished. Apart from her frequent speaking engagements on radio and TV, and conducting non-religious weddings and funerals, she financed the manufacture of the first Make Love, Not War badges that were popular in Britain during the 1960’s. Being at the forefront of radical movements for 70 years, she has combatted religion, and opposed nuclear weapons and illegal wars. At the same time she was, and still is, championing humanism, women’s right to choose abortion, prison reform, freedom of speech, and voluntary euthanasia. Her memoir, according to publisher Thornwick Press, ‘is a compelling account of her intellectual journey, her ruthless focus on ethics and principles, and her eccentric bloody-mindedness in challenging the accepted and wrong wisdom of the day.’

Barbara was born into a devout Roman Catholic family. As a girl she was torn between becoming a nun or a writer. At the age of 26 after war service in Ceylon, she renounced Christianity and joined the ranks of the secular, humanist army. For 25 years she was President NSS and led speaking tours in the USA and India to promote atheism. She even teamed up at one point with Madalyn Murray O’Hair, the US atheist who was dubbed ‘America’s most hated woman’ after she won a court case which banned prayers and Bible readings in public schools. I had an invitation to visit O’Hair but unfortunately she was murdered in 1995 before I could get to meet her. The sad news in Barbara’s newsletter is that she was diagnosed last May with advanced breast cancer, but cancelled an operation. She said her decision was ‘as rational and irrevocable as the one I made on November 5, 1949 when I renounced religion.’ She added: “In my opinion, medics give far too much priority to prolonging human life, irrespective of its quality - especially for oldies.”

New Mercedes CLA Coupe GERMAN car maker MercedesBenz has unveiled its new CLA Coupe, a car the company says is the most emotional vehicle in its class and highly intelligent. The company said the car comes equipped with features including augmented reality to aid with navigation and a voice commands feature. They come as part of an Intelligent Drive package which also includes features designed to improve aerodynamics and assist with driving. National Nadal wins in Sports Awards Open comeback SPAIN’S King and Queen have presided over this year ’s National Sports Awards which recognises the achievements of athletes from the country. King Felipe and Queen Letizia handed out a total of 12 trophies in a ceremony held at the Royal Palace of El Pardo in Madrid last week.

They were joined by the King and Queen Emeritus Juan Carlos and Sofia, as well as government officials including Spain’s Minister for Sports and Culture. The King Felipe Award was given to tennis player Rafael Nadal this year. The award recognises an athlete for distinguishing themselves in national and international matches, with Nadal unable to attend due to being at the Australian Open. The Queen Letizia Award went to karate star Sandra Sanchez. The award is given to female athletes in recognition of their sporting achievements throughout the previous year. Golfer Jon Rahm took

home the Juan Carlos Award which also recognises an athlete for their achievements. Manchester United’s Juan Mata was given the Sofia Award for nobility and fair play in their role as a sportsperson. Other winners included Olympic athlete Maria Vicente, the A La Par Foundation special needs advocacy group, Costa Rica’s Keylor Navas, Spain’s Men and Women’s Hockey team, the Valencia Region’s Trinidad Alfonso Foundation, Melilla City, Madrid’s Ortega and Gasset secondary school film directors Javier Fesser and David Marques and handball coach Juan de Dios Roman.

SPANISH tennis player Rafael Nadal has knocked James Duckworth out of the Australian Open in the first round of the tournament days after recovering from injuries. Nadal, 32, beat the Australian by 6-4, 6-3 and 7-5 in a game that lasted two hours and 15 minutes. The Mallorcan had previously spent 129 days recovering from and being treated for injuries to his right leg and abdomen. Nadal said on the court after the match that he was very happy to have gotten through the first round. “It’s not an easy comeback after a lot of months, and especially against a player who’s super aggressive,” he said.

Duckworth, 26, was considered a wild card in the tournament. Nadal seemed to be back in full form following his absence from the sport and even introduced a remodelled serve into the game. Nadal won a total of 74 per cent of first-serve points and delivered six aces. He was broken to love when serving at 5-3 in the third. Nadal said his being broken was not down to

the new serve. “My serve worked well. There were a lot of good positions after the first serve. I felt solid with the second,” Nadal said. Nadal had been forced to pull out of the Brisbane International earlier this month due to thigh strain. The 32year-old is now set to face Australian Matthew Ebden in the second round of the Open.
