New man at the top ‘THE most important day of my political life,’ was how the new Almeria Council President Javier Aureliano Garcia Molina described his inauguration on Saturday. The former provincial administration vice-president’s appointment as council head was supported by the votes of his own Popular Party. The Socialist PSOE party, Ciudadanos and United Left abstained. Garcia Molina takes over from Gabriel Amat, who stood down to focus on his job as Roquetas de Mar mayor. Paying tribute to his predecessor and ‘teacher’ Amat, the new president made reference to the shift to the right in the Andalucia regional government. “It is going to put our land in the centre of the map, not in the corner,” he commented, adding, “a new horizon is in sight.” Garcia Molina used his speech to underscore what he maintained were the administration’s most important achievements in recent years, citing record tourist numbers, greater investment, and measures which have generated wealth and improvements to services. He said the first major measure to be implemented under his presidency was aimed at increasing self-employment in municipalities with less than 3,000 inhabitants, also highlighting the importance of revitalising Almeria City’s historic centre, policies of

He also addressed the opposition parties, saying he had ‘extended my hand to my colleagues on the opposition to negotiate and reach agreement on the most important and necessary decisions for the province,’ with the aim of ‘having an impact on the well-being of the 103 municipalities.’ In a statement, Almeria Socialist Group spokesman Juan
Antonio Lorenzo criticised the PP’s last seven years of government in the province, accusing the administration of being ‘less effective, transparent, impartial and supportive of the smallest municipalities’ and of governing without a strategic plan to address the main challenges in Almeria, among them basic services, infrastructure and unemployment. Lorenzo accused the PP of ‘dealing with demands with partisan prejudices,’ and called on Garcia Molina to
‘work for the province, treating all municipalities equitably.’ Among the 250 guests attending the inauguration at the Provincial Palace Patio de Luces were Popular Party Secretary General Teodoro Garcia Egea and former Interior Minister Juan Ignacio Zoido, as well as regional, provincial and local politicians and representatives from trade unions, the Almeria business community and local celebrities.

Immigrant tragedy NATIONAL POLICE found 11 bodies on board a small inflatable boat intercepted off the coast of Roquetas de Mar carrying 32 Sub-Saharans. Two men are being held on charges of crimes against the rights of foreign citizens and negligent manslaughter. Police said the two had taken
turns skippering the seven-metre long, poorly maintained boat after setting off from Nador in Morocco carrying 55 immigrants, who had paid €1,500 each to be taken to the Spanish coast. Twelve were lost over board during the crossing. Investigations and interviews
with the survivors led to the identification of 29-year-old O B from Senegal as the organiser, assisted by 24-year-old D S from Mali. Investigators also established that the boat had started to leak en route and fuel for the motor ran out, leaving the boat drifting for three days.
CREATING jobs for the young generation as a way of preventing the exodus of people from small municipalities is the basis of an Almeria Provincial Council request for €1.2 million in funding from the national government. The council is hoping the Ministry for Territorial Policy will approve the subsidy for its Youth Employment against Depopulation strategy, which includes three projects aimed at 16-30-year-olds registered in the Government’s Youth Guarantee National System, and who either live in or are moving to municipalities with less than 5,000 inhabitants, or which have less than 10,000 inhabitants and have seen a decline in resident numbers over the last decade. The projects focus on de-
veloping the social economy and self-employment and training for young people in the province who are out of work, and are the result of analyses and meetings with the provincial representatives of the Chamber of Commerce, the Andalucia Federation of Work Cooperative Companies, the Andalucia Union of Self-Employed Workers, the Almeria Aprende training centre, the Andalucia Youth Institute and the University of Almeria. The strategy focuses on 80 municipalities with populations of under 5,000 and five which have between 5,000 and 10,000 inhabitants and which have seen resident numbers drop in the last 10 years: Macael, Carboneras, Mojacar, Olula del Rio and Velez-Rubio.

A holy sight THIS picture from inside one of Spain’s most famous holy buildings will give you plenty to contemplate as the world prepares to mark International Religion Day tomorrow (Friday). The Mezquita-Catedral de Cordoba (Mosque-Cathedral of Cordoba) has been revered as a religious site by both Catholics and Muslims. It is now called the Catedral de Nuestra Señora de la Asuncion (Cathedral of our Lady of the Assumption).
A Visigothic church built in honour of St Vincent the Third is believed to have been the first structure to stand on the site of the current Mezquita-Catedral. After the arrival of the Muslim Moors in Spain, which became Al-Andalus in the eighth century, the church was split into Christian and Muslim areas. It was then bought by Emir Abd al-Rahman I and torn down to make way for the then Mosque in 784. The Mosque underwent several alterations over the following

centuries. By 987 the Muslim part of the building came to look as it does today. When Cordoba was conquered by the Catholic King Ferdinand III of Castile in 1236 the centre of the Mosque was converted into a Christian Cathedral. Additions continued to be made well into the 18th century. Today tourists and pilgrims continue to visit the Mezquita-Catedral, with its prayer hall and Mihrab (pictured) among its most famous attractions.

Fessing up A CONSTRUCTION worker in Gador handed over a stolen industrial dumper after realising a Guardia Civil investigation into the theft of the machine was leading to him. Officers narrowed down the specific date and time of the theft, interviewing employees who were working on that afternoon.

there was a wall with a large hole in it and through which they could see marihuana buds laid out on boxes. It’s official! ALMERIA is officially the Spanish Capital of Gastronomy. Mayor Ramon FernandezPacheco signed the agreement with the Spanish Federation of Tourism Journalists and the Spanish Hotel Trade Federation which formally makes the city the country’s food capital for 2019 last Friday at the gastronomy capital head office inauguration. “We are going to be the hosts for the whole of ,” Fernandez-Pacheco said, describing the new headquarters as the “meeting area, informa-

tion point, and in short, the gateway to Almeria 2019.” The president of both federations, Mariano Palacin, praised Almeria for having presented an exceptional candidacy, commenting, “I’m sure that at the end of the year I will also be able to confirm with satisfaction that you have been the best Spanish capital of gastronomy of all time.” He continued, “Being gastronomy capital means many things, but above all else promotion in the national and international sphere.”

‘Beginning of peace of mind’ for homeowners

by Cathy Elelman HOMEOWNERS in Zurgena have the ‘beginning of peace of mind’ thanks to approval of the municipal PGOU land-use plan, Mayor Luis Diaz told British expatriates. The mayor claimed ‘99 per cent’ of properties in Zurgena could ultimately be made fully legal. While saying much remained to be done, he told the Euro Weekly News he felt great satisfaction that after six years of hard work an important stage had been reached and considerable uncertainty removed. The council leader’s comments came at a meeting last Friday to explain to British residents how the Junta de Andalucia’s rubber-stamping of the PGOU affects them. UK residents make up approximately one-third of Zurgena’s population, and the meeting hall was packed with expatriates hoping to clear up doubts about the legal status of their homes. The mayor explained each area of the municipality is now classified according to its development status, hence the density of building permitted and the different rights and obligations applying are clear. Diaz said the next stage is examining each property and development to identify any irregularities, the necessary measures to ensure full compliance

Once actioned and completed, applications can be made for the missing documentation required to guarantee a property’s full legal standing. Some in the audience expressed doubts about specific situations, the mayor repeating the council would be looking into each individual case. Zurgena councillor Jim Simpson told the Euro Weekly News the council will be establishing a cabinet to work through areas and what needs to be done. Where the list is
quite extensive the council will look into regional government grants, applying pressure to builders and developers, ‘or whether it comes down to the very bottom line where some occupants may have a cost.’ Jim shares the mayor’s confidence the PGOU approval is a major step to achieving full legality for all but a very few properties, and is ‘100 per cent sure’ all properties shown as ‘urban consolidated,’ ‘urban not consolidated’ and ‘urbanisable’ will become urban consolidated, in other words fully legal. Among those attending the meeting was Voss Homes estate
agency owner Andy Voss. He described the plan approval as “a great step forward,” adding, “the town hall should be congratulated on their hard work.” AUAN homeowners’ association president Maura Hillen gave credit to Zurgena Council for ‘working their way through the minefield of the planning system to get this far.’ She said AUAN is focused on a change to regional legislation to allow homeowners awaiting full legalisation of their properties permission to apply for an AFO if they need to, an administrative certificate to regularise housing.
Staggering litter haul from clean up THE first Coastal Cleaners Andalucia group clean of 2019 saw volunteers pick up a staggering 125 bags of litter in just two hours. In all, 48 people gathered at the beach between the Vera Playa woods and the Rambla at Villaricos, a lot of new faces joining the regulars. A further five cleaned around the cycle paths and roads. The rubbish they found varied from drink bottles, cans and cigarette packets to fishing line, cable ties and irrigation piping. Coastal Cleaners Andalucia recycled what they could locally, using a trailer for transportation. The event was supported by Currencies Direct Mojacar, which provided a meal for all volunteers at Grace’s Bar in Pueblo Laguna. This year will see Coastal Cleaners Andalucia taking environmental activities in a variety of directions, with eco projects, art and outdoor activities, all contributing to help spread the word of how everyone can help reduce the problems caused by single use plastics especially. UNUSED: The cinema has been closed for 20 years.
Bringing cinema back to life VERA’S Teatro Regio cinema is set to get a new lease of life. The local council has just put out to tender a project for the restoration of the cinema, with a budget of €217,000. The Cine Regio is located on the ground floor of a fourstorey 1960’s building and has been unused for 20 years. In 2003 it was completely remodelled, but has remained closed due to various problems. Damp has rotted the wooden battens forming the slope of the floor, and which also
support the seating, and the vinyl flooring and carpeting have over time completely deteriorated due to lack of maintenance. There is also the problem that the wall lining and flooring are not fireproof, and the fire evacuation routes pass in front of the stage, where due to the lighting, machines, curtain, and so on, there is greater risk of a fire starting. “One of the primary aims of this government team is to recognise the value of and revitalise the historic and commercial centre of the munici-
pality, regaining in this case the cinema as a cultural space and meeting point and leisure centre for our residents,” commented Vera mayor Felix Lopez. The mayor said the updates would be carried out “with the aim of adapting it to the new applicable regulations,” and “so our cinema returns to being a municipal cultural reference.” The cinema has a hall used for cinema and theatre with capacity for an audience of 420, a box office and a bar area.

House fire FIREFIGHTERS rescued a woman from inside a farmhouse in Los Carasoles in Zurgena when a fire broke out in the two-storey property on Saturday afternoon; she subsequently required hospital treatment for smoke inhalation.
Man trapped THE emergency services rescued an elderly man trapped in his vehicle after it flipped over on the MojacarCarboneras road close to Macenas late on Sunday night, removing the front windscreen to get him out the vehicle.
Happy ending A M I N I AT U R E P i n scher had a lucky escape after Guardia Civil spotted it running loose on the the A-7 dual-carriageway in Abla, causing vehicles to break suddenly to avoid hitting the disorientated looking pooch. Indicating for other motorists to slow down, the patrol followed the little dog for about three kilometres as far as a side road, where officers managed to catch it. The dog was unhurt. The Guardia tracked down the mini P i n s c h e r ’s owner in Abla, who had posted a call for help to find their missing pet on social media.

Rose Singers to take final bow AFTER 16 eventful years the Rose Singers make their final appearance at the Concierto por la Paz (Concert for Peace) in the Vera Municipal Auditorium on Sunday January 27. Formed in 2002 by three very experienced singers (Janet Rose, Tina Van Der Klooster and Lyn Ferris), together with three other talented ladies, the Rose Singers made their debut in the Anglican Chaplaincy in Mojacar in spring 2003 with guest accompanist, the late Peter Goodman. The audience gave an enthusiastic reception to their performance of sacred, secular, classical and modern music, and the Rose Singers went on to blossom, the number of members soon increasing, along with their reputation. In 2005 Pam Peters joined the choir and became official accompanist, staying until 2017 when she returned to the UK. Barry Jobling, who joined the Singers in 2015 to assist Pam, stepped into her shoes. Alison Jackson, with her varied musical career in the UK and Spain, became a welcome addition to the choir as musical director in 2006 and is still very much in charge. The Rose Singers were the first classical choral group in the Mojacar area, and have entertained audiences with their versatility, variety and vocal excellence. The group has performed in 10 different languages, with members from all over Europe, and even as far away as Canada. Over the years the Rose Singers have raised thousands of euros for local, national and international charities, and thank all the audiences who have helped make those donations possible. They invite everyone to attend their final performance, which starts at 8pm and is free entry.

HUERCAL-OVERA mayor Domingo Fernandez and Sports councillor Alonso Mena have been overseeing the delivery of new sports equipment for keep fit classes for the elderly in various locations around the municipality. Around 600 elderly residents in all attend the classes given by two specialist instructors.
Road walker hit A MAN suffered minor injuries when he was hit by a car while walking on the A92 dual-carriageway in Tabernas in the early hours of the morning. A Guardia Civil patrol was dispatched to find him after several drivers reported seeing someone looking disorientated and on foot on one of the lanes going in the Granada direction. After two hours and a second call from base informing them a driver believed he had hit someone at the kilometre 379 mark, o ff i c e r s c a m e a c r o s s h i m weaving between the hard shoulder and the lane with injuries to his head and extremities. H e t o l d o ff i c e r s h e h a d been trying to cross the dual-carriageway.
Celebrity endorsement CELEBRITY Mario Vaquerizo has endorsed Almeria as a tourist destination, appearing in a city council promotional video for next week’s FITUR international tourism fair. The journalist and musician, probably best known for TV reality show Mario and Alaska, and for his recent appearance as a contestant on Celebrity Masterchef, is shown encouraging people to visit Almeria year-round and enjoy the fine weather, coast, activities, culture and cuisine. “I’m a person who likes to discover new things, and is why I’m here,” he says standing on a beach in a wetsuit.

Theatre works going well
Drugs discovery GUARDIA CIVIL discovered more than 1,000 1.5-metre high marihuana plants in a greenhouse in Gador after acting on the back of information about the possibility of a plantation on a property somewhere in the locality.
Car fire FIREFIGHTERS had to evacuate three residents from a seven-storey building in Almeria City as they were trying to get their cars out of a completely smoke-filled underground garage where a vehicle had caught fire.
Taxi grant ALMERIA City Council has approved awarding subsidies of €7,000 each to 10 taxi drivers who will adapt their vehicles for passengers with reduced mobility. Once adapted the 10 taxis will have Accessible Almeria stickers.
Water plan THE Andalucia regional government is investing €4.8 million in the Cuevas del Almanzora Community of Irrigators to back a project to upgrade nearly 1,500 hectares of horticulture and citrus in the municipality.

INCLUSIVE: El Bandido Runners is open to everyone, including joggers and walkers.
Keep on running… A LOCAL Mojacar running group is aiming to create the first ParkRun in Spain. The El Bandido Runners’ Kevin Rowe reports the group has made a formal application to the local council to establish an area with ‘a proper park’ for weekly five-kilometre timed runs. The idea is to stage free runs in safe and pleasant surroundings, encouraging people of every ability to take part, whether running for the first time or experienced athletes. Kevin is passionate about
bringing the ParkRun concept to the Costa Almeria. Since June he has been reaching out to like-minded people in the area through social media, and today El Bandido Runners is more than 150-strong. Many of the members are permanent residents, but significant numbers spend only part of the year or holidays in the area. As Kevin stresses, El Bandido Runners is completely inclusive, happy for members to run with the group as and when they can, and welcomes all lev-
els, including joggers and walkers, and even those who want to bring their dogs along too. “We wait for everyone to finish, we celebrate everyone finishing!” Kevin says. Kevin is delighted the Mojacar seafront promenade now features distance markers every 500 metres along a 2,500-metre stretch as this gives him a measured 5,000metre, or three-mile course. His hope is that the next step will be the area’s very own ParkRun.
WORKS on the new Pulpi theatre set to open its doors this year, are progressing according to plan, the provincial government and the local council said. The foundations are in place and the contract for the second phase of the works has now been awarded, with an investment of more than €1.2 million. Almeria Council Development Deputy Oscar Liria described the project as ‘the most important works for the cultural life of the municipality,’ while Pulpi mayor Juan Pedro Garcia said the theatre was a facility local residents had asked for and which ‘will be able to be enjoyed by Pulpi residents and future generations.’ The mayor also stressed that ‘the works are going to be paid for thanks to the collaboration with the Council and public-private collaboration.’ The new theatre will have capacity for an audience of 575, and will include seats adapted for persons with limited mobility. The total investment in the new facility will be €1.7 million.

Subtitle row resolved NETFLIX has reacted to controversy over its subtitling of the mostly Spanishlanguage film Roma after being accused of being ‘ignorant.’ The original offering of ‘European Spanish’ subtitles on the Mexican film on Netflix and in cinemas in Spain provoked angry reactions from viewers and the director, Alfonso Cuaron, who said the move was ‘parochial, ignorant and offensive to Spaniards themselves’ during an interview with El Pais. Netflix responded by dropping the ‘European Spanish’ option and replacing it with ‘Spanish’ closed captioning, which transcribes what is spoken onscreen, rather than translating concepts for a non-local audience.

Baby it’s cold outside SOMETHING has changed in Spain. Until the end of the last century, statistics reveal that most babies were born in the spring. Counting back nine months, this indicated that they were conceived during the summer months, either deliberately or as the result of holiday passion and warm summer evenings.
But for the last 20 years or so, more births have occurred in October than at any other time of the year. This, the statisticians concluded, can only be the result of the long Christmas break when Spain eats, drinks, makes very merry and cuddles up during the long, dark winter nights.
Arms controls SPAIN’S government is planning to create a new system to monitor arms exports to other countries. The new system would see inspectors sent to countries that buy weapons from Spain. The measures are due to come into force in around four to five months time, according to reports. It comes after news of the export of some 400 laser guided explosives to Saudi Arabia, which is fighting in the Yemen Civil War, caused a scandal last year. The Saudis have caused controversy with their intervention. Riyadh has faced accusations of war crimes and many of its bombs have fallen on civilians.

School bullies arrested NATIONAL POLICE arrested 15 teenagers for bullying two brothers at a secondary school in User, Madrid. The suspected bullies, all aged between 14 and 16, were accused of humiliating, harassing and insulting the brothers, filming the incidents and then posting them on social media. The victims, aged 13 and 15, did not go to school for a month-and-a-half because of the abuse. In December, the father of the brothers reported the bullies to the police after hearing a group of youngsters shouting abuse at his sons outside the family home. When the officers arrived they found a group of 20 or so teenagers, detaining 15 of them. Interviews with the two brothers revealed they had been suffering bullying at the hands of a bunch of school mates and friends of the bullies, the parents backing up the children’s version of events.
‘Quarter of water’ lost SPAIN loses the third highest amount of water in Europe, according to a study. A report by consultancy firm PwC found Spain loses the equivalent of 25 per cent of the water it consumes. The problem is improving, however, with Spanish water consumption down by 7 per cent between 2000 and 2014, due to better public awareness and more efficient irrigation systems. More water is also being reused, with 80 per cent of water now treated, meaning the recycling figures have gone from 6 per cent in 2002 to 12 per cent in 2014. cording to the report is a lack of funding for infrastructure. The PwC study claims Spain has not updated its water system for 10 years, and is missing €12,300 of investment into its services.

New towns as depopulation continues THREE new towns were created in Spain last year while the country’s rural areas continue to be dogged by depopulation, official figures show. The three new towns in Spain are Cordoba Province’s Fuente Carreteros and La Guijarrosa and El Palmar de Troya, in Sevilla Province. The new towns, created after separating from existing urban centres, come as the number of people living in small rural towns continues to decline. Meritxell Batet, Spain’s Minister of Territorial Planning, said previously depopulation was the ‘biggest challenge’ currently facing the country. Figures from the National Institute of Statistics (INE) show 2,627 out of the 8,124 towns and cities in Spain contain between 101 and 500 inhabitants. A total of 1,360 towns are home to less than 101 residents, up from 1,319 at the start of 2018 according to the INE. Ten years ago, the equivalent figure was 1,036.
Anti-theft technology RESEARCHERS have developed a scooter with technology which might make it harder for thieves to steal. Dutch company Etergo says it has created a machine run entirely on electricity which allows users to remove its batteries and help prevent
the vehicle being stolen. It will be on sale in May in Germany and the Netherlands before later being rolled out across the rest of Europe. The scooter has a range of 240 kilometres and works in conjunction with a smart phone app.

A DEAL has been struck which will allow British citizens in Spain and Spanish citizens in Britain to vote and stand in local elections after Brexit, Spain’s Foreign Minister said. Josep Borrell said the pact covers the 240,000 British citizens registered as residents in Spain and the roughly 150,000 Spanish people in Britain. Spanish government sources have also confirmed diplomats from Madrid and London are in the process of closing off the deal. Borrell said: “Bilateral agreements between Spain and Britain will guarantee that Spaniards who are living there and Britons here will maintain will their rights, even the right to vote in municipal elections.” The deal aims to maintain current EU arrangements covering voting. It is similar to agreements Spain has with Norway, New Zealand and some Latin American countries. British ambassador Simon Manley was set to formally announce the deal this week. It comes as Borrell said Madrid was making plans for Brexit, including a no-deal scenario which the Foreign Minister said would be a ‘catastrophe.’

Residency call By Joe Gerrard & Dilip Kuner BRITAIN’S Consul for southern Spain has urged expatriates from the country to make sure their residency (residencia) arrangements are in order as the official date for Brexit draws closer. Charmaine Arbouin told an expatriate Brexit meeting, any guarantees made to British citizens in Spain would only apply to those legally residing in Spain. All EU citizens living in a member state which is not their home country are legally required to register if they want to stay longer than 90 days regardless, the Consul added. “The Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez has said he wants all people living here to continue to do so with a minimum of fuss. So has Josep Borrel, Spain’s Foreign Minister,” Arbouin said. “But both have said the protection of rights will only apply to those who are legally residents of Spain at the time of Brexit,” the Consul added.

Dairy farms face closure SPAIN’S dairy farms are at risk of closing down if dairy farmers are not paid a fair price for the milk they produce, says the organisation for livestock farmers UPA. The latest figures show that Spain is at the bottom of the list in Europe when it comes to prices paid at source. UPA has sent a clear warning to the dairy industry informing them that farmers are losing approximately €25 million a month, and that ‘without fair prices at source, the efforts of the whole industry would be for nothing if dairy farms had to shut down.’ Figures show that French dairy farmers receive €5.42 more than their Spanish counterparts for every 100 kilograms of milk, while when compared to the European average, Spanish milk producers are paid €4.45 less per 100 kilograms. According to the Ministry of Agriculture, approximately three dairy farms a day are currently having to close.

Budget release By Joe Gerrard SPANISH government ministers formally unveiled proposals for the 2019 budget this week which included increases in funding for Cataluña and social spending which will require broad parliamentary support to pass. Ministers and officials from the ruling left-leaning Partido Socialista (PSOE) have hailed their budget as one which will modernise the economy, improve worker conditions and tackle the country’s debts. But they will have little time for formalities and back-patting as they prepare to muster support to get their budget through Congress. Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez said the budget left no-one behind and claimed it offered the largest amount of social spending in the history of Spanish democracy. “No one would understand if

It is the responsibility of all political parties to make sure Spain continues to advance,” Sanchez said. The budget features measures including a rise in funding for Cataluña to more than €2.2 billion, bringing its total share of regional grants to 16.8 per cent. Cataluña’s share was 13.1 per cent last year. Other proposals include €670 million for a youth employment
plan, €220 million to help combat gender violence and more than €7.5 billion in infrastructure spending. PSOE ministers now have a long way to go to gather parliamentary support for their plans. The spending boost for Cataluña has failed to win over the region’s pro-independence president Quim Torra. He has called for pro-independence parties to vote against the budget over Madrid’s handling of the se-
cession situation unleashed following 2017’s referendum. Funding increases for Cataluña also drew fire from the leader of the conservative Partido Popular (PP) Pablo Casado. Casado accused the government of negotiating a budget which was designed to satisfy those who wanted to ‘break up Spain.’ “PSOE has decided to sell Spain in exchange for staying in power for a few more months,” Casado said. The PP could make life difficult for the government as it has an absolute majority in the Spanish Senate. They and the centrist Ciudadanos will likely table several amendments to water down PSOE’s proposals. PSOE must therefore establish a tightly-knit coalition with parties who sided with it in last year’s no-confidence vote to have any hope of passing their proposals.
Far-right call SPAIN’S prime minister has called for opposition to those who want a country ‘in black and white’ in an attack on the far-right ahead of historic political changes in Andalucia. Pedro Sanchez’s comments came as the conservative Partido Popular (PP) and the centrist Ciudadanos agreed a coalition pact to take power in Andalucia with the backing of the far-right Vox. “Being a patriot is not about shouting: ‘Long Live Spain!’ It is about working every day to make the country better,” Sanchez said. Sanchez has positioned himself as a leading voice in Spain’s progressive movement since becoming prime minister in June last year. His ruling left-leaning Partido Socialista (PSOE) and the leftist Podemos look likely to be the two largest parties which will stand in opposition to the right going forward. Ciudadanos had sought to occupy the centre ground in Spanish politics but its decision to get into bed with Vox in Andalucia suggests they are now tacking to the right. That decision has caused internal strife in Ciudadanos and could lead to no party offering a middle ground between left and right. Poll tracker: Partido Socialista (PSOE): 25.1 per cent, 106 seats. Partido Popular (PP): 18.2 per cent, 87 seats. Ciudadanos: 17.9 per cent, 65 seats. Unidos Podemos: 14 per cent, 46 seats. Result: PSOE largest party, no overall control.

Correos deliver a record year SPAIN’S most recognisable and well-known post office - Correos has distributed a record amount of packets and parcels during 2018 in the Murcia region. Compared to 2017, it’s recorded a staggering increase of 80 per cent and equates to more than 2,650,000 items. The figures come as more and more people are using online services which require home deliveries of a wide range of products, and so it is no surprise that some of the highest figures came during the months of November and December that coincided with ‘Black Friday’ and Christmas. A total of 260,000 packages were delivered in the Murcia region in November... a figure that rose to almost 329,000 in December. Across those two months alone, the number represented a 36 per cent growth compared to the same period in 2017. Across the year as a whole, a monthly average of 221,000 parcels and packets were handled.

TRAGIC DEATH: Politicians paid tribute to a victim of domestic abuse. THE mayor of Almuñecar, Trinidad Herrera Lorente, has presided over a minute’s silence to honour the memory of a woman reportedly killed by her partner. Almuñecar Town Hall held the event to pay tribute to 47-year-old Leonor, thought to be the first Andalucian woman to be killed by domestic abuse this year in Spain. The victim was allegedly stabbed to death in Fuengirola by her ex-partner, who she had
separated from three months ago. The pair’s 16year-old son was also said to have been injured in the attack as he tried to protect his mother, and is now being treated for wounds to his face and shoulder. Members of Almuñecar Council held their tribute at the gates to the town hall, in Plaza de la Constitucion, to honour the victim, who was the second woman to be killed so far this year in Spain by a partner or former partner.

the person filing the complaint said that the guilty party could be the former partner of her son who separated from the 23year-woman back in 2017. According to reports, it was quickly established that the young woman had been seen entering and leaving the property at the date and time that the alleged theft occurred. As the investigation continued, the woman was located and subsequently arrested in a Benidorm hotel. During the inter-
vention of the National Police, the woman voluntarily went to the place where she’d stored more than €72,000 in cash before being taken to the Local Police station. Once the facts were clarified, the woman was released as she had her young daughter with her.

Road brawl LOCAL POLICE officers in Mar-
bella are tracing two men who were filmed fighting in the middle of traffic in a road in the city. Footage of the incident, which was filmed by an onlooker, showed the two men getting out of their cars before hitting one another on Avenida Alfonso de Hohenlohe. One man can be seen punching the other to the ground several times before the latter walks off while cars drive past them. The cause of the incident is unclear, with one driver in a Citroen
saloon and the other in a KIA four by four. Local Police officers are reportedly tracing the men to see if either wishes to file a complaint about the other.

Hospital overload MALLORCA’S public hospitals and primary care emergency services dealt with a total of 24,308 emergencies last week; 7,505 hospital cases and 16,803 in primary healthcare centres. Approximately 12 per cent of the hospital emergencies required patients being admitted, while the island’s medical centres reported 936 episodes of flu. Although the general figures may seem particularly high, this is in fact a slight reduction on cases recorded from the same week last year, which saw 27,212 emergencies; 8,819 seen to in hospitals and 18,393 in primary healthcare centres, where 2,506 cases of flu were reported. Additionally, the 061 Salut Respon information service recorded 46 telephone consultations, with queries regarding pharmaceutical drugs, feverish symptoms in adults, breathing difficulties and vomiting being the most common. According to the Sentinel Influenza Network of the Epidemiological Service in the Balearic Islands, the flu rate between December 31 and January 6 was 40.3 for every 100,000 inhabitants. Whilst this figure is lower than the State average of 47.6, it is still higher than the epidemic threshold figure of 35.35.

Climate plan for big firms SPANISH government officials have said they will make all companies listed on the country’s stock exchange, detail their impact on the environment as part of wider climate change plans. The new rules are due to apply to companies regardless of which industry or sector they are in. Similar rules have previously applied to large energy firms. The measures come as part of the government’s National Integrated Energy and Climate Plan which officials hope to pass by decree.

Union opposes job cut plan A SPANISH trade union has said it will fight plans from a British telecommunications company to cut worker numbers in Spain by up to around 24 per cent. The UGT said Vodafone’s plan to slash up to 1,200 jobs was ‘unnecessary and wrong’ and that staff were not responsible for the firm’s performance. Around 5,100 people work for the company’s Spanish arm. It comes as the London-based company sent an Employment Regulation File (ERE) to three trade unions detailing plans to dismiss staff after a fall in revenue last year. UGT said Vodafone should find a so-

Vodafone’s Spanish division said in a statement the move was justified because of economic, organisational and productivity reasons.
‘This proposal seeks to reverse negative trends in our business, strengthen its sustainability, protect investments and create a more competitive organisation which is better adapted to customer needs,’ the statement said. The Spanish division’s British parent company the Vodafone Group announced plans to cut its European costs by €1.2 billion in the next three years last November. Vodafone Spain posted falls in revenue of 3.2 per cent from April to September 2018. Gross operating profits fell by 27.8 per cent during the same period.
SPAIN has come second in European countries in the amount invested in its hotel sector last year despite money coming into tourist hotspot Barcelona falling by almost half. Data from the CBRE industry consultant showed investment in the Spanish hotel industry reached around €4.9 billion in 2018, up 33 per cent on the previous year. Investment in Barcelona stood at €232 million, a drop of 45 per cent believed to have been brought on by ongoing uncertainty over the Catalan independence issue.

EU benefit CUT: Calviño has cut GDP forecasts. SPANISH Gross Domestic Product (GDP) is predicted to grow by 2.2 per cent this year, 0.1 per cent less than initially predicted, according to the country’s Economy Minister. Nadia Calviño said the revision was due to the government being forced to aim for a faster cutting of Spain’s government spending deficit. “If we had stuck to our deficit reduction target we
would have revised the prediction for GDP upward,” Calviño said. The government is now aiming to cut the deficit to 1.3 per cent of GDP after previously aiming for 1.8 per cent. The change came after the conservative Partido Popular (PP), which has an outright majority in the Spanish Senate, threatened to block the budget if deficit reduction targets were relaxed.
SPAIN has received almost €8.1 billion from the EU for 110 projects under the bloc’s Strategic Investment Plan, according to data from the European Commission which found that the country came fourth in terms of those who benefitted most.
Growth plan BASQUE telecommunications firm Euskaltel said it hopes to attract some 90,000 customers in the next four years with plans to move into Cantabria, Cataluña, La Rioja, Leon and Navarra which chief executive Francisco Arteche said was a ‘natural step.’
Media firm fine threat SPAIN’S competition watchdog has said it will fine two leading media companies by up to €30 million after ruling they abused their dominant market position, unless they stop their practices. The National Commission of Markets and Competition (CNMC) claimed Mediaset and Atresmedia both worked to carve up the Spanish television advertising market between them.
The claims follow a 10-month investigation. The CNMC alleged the firms made advertisers and media agencies obey a minimum quota for their channels under a system of bonuses and penalties. Such a move would be illegal under market competition rules. The companies claim the practices are commonplace in the industry and added they would take the case to Spain’s National Court if they are sanctioned.

More love needed
LEAPY LEE SAYS IT OTHERS THINK IT I CANNOT believe I’m having to waste a part of the blurb to yet again correct a misquote in a reader’s letter to the EWN. Some weeks ago, in similar circumstances I received a published apology for being almost libelously misquoted in a missive concerning the Grenfell Tower tragedy. Well, last week it happened again. In a recent column, when I was citing an example of what I considered PC racism. I wrote. ‘The portraits (of historical figures) were replaced by one of a lion and another painted by a local artist, of a black woman Henrietta Lacks.’ Unquote. At no time did I sarcastically state that ‘she was a black lady who died in 1950 and is still alive today’!? Many thanks for all the information I have received concerning this unusual and extremely unfortunate lady, whose cell cultures have apparently saved many cancer victims, but please, before you put ‘pen to paper,’ just check the column in question and endeavour to not exaggerate the copy in an effort to undermine this ol’ boy’s hard-fought reputation. Awright! I see another youngster has been stabbed to death in what appears to be a gang-related murder in London. I in no way mean to undermine the tragedy of this 14-year old’s death. But, despite the usual wailing and expressions of grief

In self-confessed ‘trapper’ (street slang for drug courier) mode, showing him masked and hooded, astride a moped, clutching fistfuls of £50 and
£20 notes and making a gun sign, rather sullies the insistence by his mother that he was a ‘loving, caring boy, who had no connection with drug gangs.’ Yet another family would appear to be in denial of their offspring running riot and fuelling the violence and gang culture which is afflict-
ing Mayor Khan’s London. Talking generally about the gang-related violence that seems to be on the up, it is surely the job of families to keep their children on the straight and narrow. If families would do their jobs and give more love and attention to their children, instead of in many cases using them as benefit cows and letting them run riot and undisciplined around gang infested streets, they may go some way to easing the problem. As it is these young boys and girls will continue to turn to the adult gangsters to try and retain some semblance of belonging and cohabitation among people who at least give the appearance of caring. It’s the families of these youngsters that need to get their acts together. Waiting till their offspring either suffer (or instigate) horrific deaths, before they announce to the world how much they ‘loved and cared’ for them, is too late. Children need to be consistently convinced and assured of these feelings from day one. They need to have it demonstrated by routine and the security of family life. What are your 2019 goals? Make it happen! by Rob Shallis WITH 2019 here, we once again convince ourselves that it will be the year to make changes. ‘I’m going to join the gym,’ ‘lose weight,’ ‘make more money,’ ‘start a business.’ The list is endless, and of course at the time we mean it. Then the usual pattern ensues, procrastination eventually kicks in and we’re back to square one. The conscious mind makes the decision to change, but our deep rooted self-beliefs, limitations, fear and assumptions eventually prevail. Focusing on past results rather than future success makes progress virtually impossible. Short-term gratification triumphs over our pursuit for long-term objectives. Simply put, we give up. We externalise, placing blame on past situations and current circumstances to justify our decision to quit. The seeds we sow now are the seeds we reap. Do not give up. Discipline your be-
BELIEVE IN YOURSELF: Never give up on your dreams. haviour to achieve the results you want and the outcome you desire will flourish. So, how do you break through the invisible wall to reach your goal and dreams? When others give up? In order to achieve these successes and make changes in your life, firstly you need to change your self-image, as you cannot succeed if your self-im-
age is inconsistent to your positive desires. You need to totally believe you can do the things you ask of yourself. Decide what it is you want to achieve and more importantly, ask yourself ‘why?’ Purpose is key. Truly act as if it’s impossible to fail. Focus on your end result. Many people often become entangled with the ‘how’ rather than the
‘what.’ The ‘how’ will look after itself whilst you stay focused on the outcome. The actual journey and progressive realisation of a worthy goal with purpose will bring about a sense of joy. Do not let negative opinions of others create your reality and prevent you from working towards your dream. They are not your opinions, do not
own them, they do not belong to you. In order not to feel overwhelmed by goal setting, break down your goals into bite-size pieces, use each goal as a stepping stone in order reach your final destination. Do not waver from your initial goal. Do not be driven by your fears or your need to please others, instead, be driven by your desire to contribute, grow and expand. A goal is a dream with an embossed time stamp, so put a time limit on your goal and have a clear intention to succeed. No dream is too big so think big and challenge yourself. Expect and believe you will achieve it, don’t give up and take action towards reaching each small step. Remember, life does not give you what you want or need, it gives you what you deserve. Know that life can happen for you, not to you. You can design your life. See yourself as the person you want to be and start being that person today. The difference between achieving and failing is not giving up. This coming New Year, 2019, is your year, make it happen for you!

THE Euro Weekly News has exclusively caught up with some of the star of ‘Bargain Loving Brits in the Sun,’ episode two. This popular reality television series, which charts the lives of Britons who are determined to carve out new lives for themselves in sunny Spain on a shoestring budget, airs on a Thursday night on Channel 5 at 8pm UK time. Episode two will see viewers introduced to, ‘the cat lady of the Costa Del Sol,’ Londoner Kelly Dooley. Kelly feeds more than 100 street cats, as well as running a trapping and neutering scheme. But the vet bills have piled up - she owed €2,000 at one point so Kelly has come up with a plan to help raise some
cash towards the bills, a flea market outside the bar where she works. But can she raise enough to pay for her next visit to the vet? Kelly told the Euro Weekly News she began helping local cats because they are, “treated like rats here and get left behind.” She explains while she was initially, “quite shy,” during filmi n g , s o o n K e l l y, “ s t a r t e d coming out of my shell.” The animal-lover says she is now, “looking forward to seeing the show, I think it will be quite emotional.” Kelly, who says her ultimate goal is to start her own refuge, explained she hopes publicity from the show will, “raise awareness and increase adoptions from people from abroad.” In the same episode, the
show will explore Saydo, a static caravan park which is home to more than 200 Britons, where viewers will meet resident expatriate Margaret Finch. M a rg a r e t i s d o i n g t h e rounds at the weekly market trying to sell tickets for her once-a-month Magical Mystery Tour, a coach trip costing just €11. The passengers are all British and the destination is a secret, b u t c a n M a rg a r e t s e l l enough tickets to break even? M a rg a r e t t o l d t h e E u ro Weekly News she does not, “do it for the money, just for a day out,” explaining her trips have been popular for years, offering residents the chance to, “go out, have lunch, have a bottle of wine, and come home.”
ONE of my New Year’s resolutions this year (as well as the usual promises to myself that I will maybe try and shift a bit of weight!), is that I have promised myself to get out and see more live music. When I say live music, I mean proper live music, singers and bands, with instruments, who can actually play and sing. Musicians who have actually learnt their craft and have rehearsed enough so that they know their repertoire and can perform it without spending their time on stage staring at an iPad or music stand. There are some fabulous venues around and a lot of great gigs. It’s a wonderful thing to go out and be entertained by a band, especially when they are more imaginative with their setlist. I recently saw three different bands in two weeks, and their setlists were
virtually identical. There are some talented musicians around: surely it’s not much to ask for a few surprises? With the odd exception, I won’t be going out to see singers singing solely to backing tracks, glorified Karaoke singers. I can go to a Karaoke night for that!

Mike Senker In my opinion Views of a Grumpy Old Man I AM writing this article on January 10 and the reason I’m telling you the date is that I want to know when is the official time to stop wishing everyone you meet, happy New Year. For me, it’s all done and dusted by January 6. The Xmas tree is down - not that we had one up in the first place - and as we are in Spain, Three Kings is a great guide. I actually think it sometimes looks sad when you drive around and see the Christmas lights still up. It’s back to normal and to double prove it pop in to a department store and see all the presents you bought, now at half price in the sales! I am a meat eater and I enjoy it, and to be honest I am getting a bit fed up by being attacked by my vegan friends. Why do you think you are so much better than me? Why do you think it’s OK to preach to me? If you don’t want to eat meat or fish or anything else that’s up to you and jolly good luck to you. But please stop preaching how healthy you are because you are a vegan. I have news for
you; some of the food you are eating is not as healthy as you think. I looked at vegan burgers which are full of processed fats like soyabean oil. Some contain MSG which is a terrible ingredient found a lot in Chinese food and can give you night horrors. So I’ll stick to my wagyu burgers thank you. The same applies with spreads; check what’s in them. I have to add here that if you are a vegan because of the concern for animals I do not have any argument with that. It’s just the ‘I’m healthier than you’ brigade. Another thing is ‘Oi Greggs, there is no such thing as a vegan sausage roll!’ It either is a sausage roll or it’s a pastry filled with ‘something’ but it’s not a sausage. Since protein is scarce when you avoid animal products, soy products like edamame, tofu, soy protein powder, and tempeh are often the replacements. The reality is that soy protein is very difficult to digest, a thyroid suppressive and estrogenic due to phytoestrogens. It also contains high levels of phytic acid which cause less absorption of nutrients, as well as trypsin inhibitors which can interfere with digestion. So that’s you told. I’m bracing myself for some serious rows about this. Here’s a question for you: How can you tell if someone is a vegan? Don’t worry, they will tell you.

Stacey Dooley to front BBC make-up artist talent show STACEY DOOLEY is best known for her hard-hitting documentaries tackling topics such as Daesh, gun violence and sex offenders. She recently gained a new audience by winning Strictly Come Dancing. But now Dooley is branching out in a new direction by hosting BBC Three show Glow Up: Britain’s Next MakeUp Star. Garland is global make-up director for L’Oreal Paris and has worked with the likes of Kate Moss, Kendall Jenner, Lady Gaga and Alexander McQueen. Skinner has worked in genres including theatre, ballet, film and TV. Guest judges from the world of fashion and film will also appear although no names have been revealed as yet. The series will air later this year and follows in the footsteps of similar shows such as BBC Two’s The Great British Sewing Bee and The Great Pottery Throw Down.

A HOMESICK expat in the USA asking who had been voted off Strictly Come Dancing and another in Italy requesting help to arrange a wedding and get tickets to see the Pope are among weird calls for help made by Britons abroad last year, according to the Foreign Office. One guy rang to ask for confirmation that Poland wasn’t home to vampires, because a woman he met online had asked what blood type he was before going on their first date. Better still, an Englishman in Bangkok asked consular staff to contact a massage parlour as he’d fallen asleep during a rub-down and felt he shouldn’t have to pay for it (let’s hope he at least left a tip for the masseuse as he must have been extremely relaxed to fall ‘fast asleep’), while another in Delhi asked what time the British High Commission opened as he’d heard it sold vegetarian sausages. Someone in the Canary Islands asked consular staff to persuade his hotel to give him a different room after a stray cat had ‘broken into’ his current one and peed on his bed. Unfair pensions I AM pleased to see that the Spanish government is proposing to increase the pension for OAPs without restrictions, it would seem. Not so our UK government. How so, I hear you ask. Last April a new pension rate was introduced of £164.35 per week, £657.36 per month, £8,545.68 per year. Great, so far so good. But wait, if you were born before April 1951 you don’t get it, you stick on the old rate. So, if you are 67 tough. In my case I’m down £803.92 per year. I only found this information out through my company pension news sheet. How many of your readers are over 67? How many know they have been ripped off and by how much? I send this to Leapy as I love his column and no UK publication would print any of this, but I believe he would like to let readers know, in case they have not yet noticed due to the fluctuations of the pound against the Euro. I LIVE in Carvajal, Fuengirola for six months of the year. I have owned an apartment there for the last 16 years. One thing that spoils our visit to the lovely beach is seeing people extinguishing their cigarettes out in the sand. My wife and I are both smokers, we always take some sort of container with us to the beach to extinguish our cigarettes, then dispose of it at the end of the day in one of the many bins. The worst days are on a Sunday, when large families come to the beach and a lot of them discard their cooking oil, cigarettes, etc onto the beach. Can you imagine what the hundreds of thousands of cigarettes per year do to the sand? The colour of the sand would, I imagine, turn several shades lighter in time. In Portugal they have signs by the beach asking people to ‘respect the environment.’ The beaches are in pristine condition. It would not cost a fortune to put similar signs on the Spanish beaches. I am hoping that the appropriate Spainish authorities might take some action if they read this article. Bill (full name supplied)

UNCERTAINTIES surrounding Brexit show no sign of going away, but one thing we can be sure of is the importance of registering as a resident in Spain. British envoys including the country’s consul in southern Spain Charmaine Arbouin have called on expatriates to make sure they get their arrangements in order to safeguard their position post-Brexit. The consul told Euro Weekly News that only registered British residents could be sure their rights would be protected after Britain leaves the EU. Being properly registered as a resident in Spain will make your situation here more secure and it could save you a bureaucratic headache after Brexit which is due this March. The queue for registrations is likely to grow as we get closer to the planned Friday March 29 withdrawal date. If you need to get your residency you should aim to do so sooner rather than later. Residency, known as residencia in Spanish law, is not the same as fiscal tax residency. You may be down as a tax resident but this will not give you the protection that residencia does. Being registered in Spain will not only help you, but it will also benefit your local authority. Funding for local services including the police, fire brigade and ambulances is allocated depending on how many people are on the padron, a town’s register of its residents.

Beauty insiders claim this will be the year when colour rules supreme; from hair and make-up to fashion and nails. Coral is set to be one of the biggest colours of the year, with experts predicting the look will be big in lip colours, blushers, and nails. There is also expected to be an overall trend towards bold lip colours, moving away from the more muted, natural look of previous years. Generation gap IT’S the time of year when the nation resolves to eat healthily and do more exercise, but half of young Britons admit they cannot be bothered. According to new research from Mintel, 49 per cent of under 25’s say it is a sheer lack of motivation which is preventing them from following healthy habits. It’s the UK’s young women who are most likely to say a lack of motivation is the reason they’re not as healthy as they could be, with some six in 10 (57 per cent) women aged 16-24 admitting they are not following healthy habits more often. This is in stark contrast to the nation’s over 65’s, just 21 per cent of whom agree a lack of motivation is a contributing factor to not following a healthy lifestyle. Meanwhile, 51 per cent of over 65’s say they already do as much as they can to follow healthy habits. While feeling self-conscious when exercising (13 per cent), ranks fairly low as a barrier to healthier lifestyles, one in three (33 per cent) females under 25 say this stops them being healthy.

Carbs have been taking the rap for a while now, but it is important to have a balanced view on which you should eat, and when. Unlike the popular Keto diet, it is not advisable to cut out carbs forever. Your body requires carbs for energy particularly if you exercise. If you don’t fuel your body with carbs and protein, your body will begin to store fat for energy. Many people believe carbs are simply bread, pasta, rice and potatoes. However, there are many good carbs which should be eaten including fruit, vegetables, oats, chickpeas, quinoa, lentils and beans. On high-carb days you can fill your diet with these, as long as you keep the fat content low that day. Green veg contains so much fibre, you can eat as much as you like! Be wary of fruit on low-carb days however, as some are extremely high in carbs. A banana for example is around a whopping 25g! Try and stick to red berries instead which are also high in antioxidants.

Filleting a whole salmon HAVING had to learn basic butchery skills since we’re starting to raise our own meat here at Olive Tree Farm, it also gave me the confidence to attempt to prepare and fillet fish. It has been a long time since I bought a whole salmon, it always looks so expensive, but I decided to bite the bullet and purchased a rather large one, so I could put my new knife set to the test! On returning home, I thought it best to remind myself of how to go about it. Being a fan of Gordon Ramsay, I remembered a video I had seen on Master Chef. The task was to fillet a whole salmon ending up with 10 even portions and as clean a back bone as possible. I watched it a couple of times and then got to work. I eyed up the knife set whilst the fish eyed up me. I made my choice of knife and with the video in front of me followed Chef Ramsay’s instructions. Carefully cutting behind the gills first, I then worked my way down the centre of the back. The knives were razor sharp, I was careful to cut away from myself to avoid any chance of cutting my fingers.
OLIVE TREE FARM was set up about four years ago with the intention of achieving a level of self sufficiency. We have poultry for meat and eggs, goats for milk, rabbits and small pigs for meat and harvest our 70 olive trees each year for oil. We also grow a variety of fruits and vegetables.
I eventually managed to take off one whole side and began to remove the back bone. After what seemed like ages, I had done it! Feeling quite accomplished and much more confident, I then cut each side into five equally sized portions. When I worked out what I had paid for the fish, and the amount I got from mine, I was surprised at how much I had saved by doing it myself. In fact, it would have cost more than three times the amount, had I bought it pre-packed! We enjoyed a lovely meal of pan-fried salmon, with a beautifully crispy skin, served with a green salad and crinkle cut chips, and the fish was delicious. Give it a go, you might surprise yourself!

What we mostly had for Christmas down here was calima and it sucks, quite literally. Now, calimas can be everything from what feels like stepping outdoors into a dust-filled hot oven equipped with a blower strong enough to bowl you over, to a mildly hazy day where you noticed you had drier eyes than usual, ending in a blaze of spectacular sunset, but are all best avoided. If you’ve never experienced one, or don’t know what it is, feel lucky! Step out into a calima and experience instant moisture loss. It’s a kind of grape-to-prune experience, and is the weather which turns relentless optimists into depressives, sucks all the moisture out of everything, turns lush green spaces into arid patches and gardens into twig and dust dumps. A horrible brown smudge appears

Shortly after the appearance of smudgette or brownout come the delightful side-effects, with the nose, eyes and throat making an instant, irritated response, but should the calima still be going strong after a few days, your community can enjoy the challenge of
bronchial spasms, respiratory crises and asthma. This frequently nudges the elderly and infirm over into the abyss (four funerals took place during calima in the small valley where we live). ‘Death, where is thy sting?’ they can be forgiven for asking as they slip away into cool, dust-free oblivion, leaving the rest of us to hang around in our dust-covered
world, with cracked lips, parched skin, static hair, gunky eyes, raw throats, snotty noses, bronchial spasms, respiratory crises and asthma People in general get ill during calima, but it’s hard on the elderly, and children in particular are vulnerable. The poor little dears go down with sore throats, raised temperatures, coughs and any with even the slightest respiratory

problems should be shut in a cool bunker somewhere, preferrably in another climate zone. Tiny asthma sufferers should be carried straight to the nearest airport and whisked away out of danger. You see, the authorities are hardly likely to say ‘abandon all hope and flee everyone, this is the bad stuff.’ Populations panic in those circumstances and trample on each other, which although only questionably as harmful as breathing in a load of Saharan sand, is to be avoided. But who’s to stop you taking evasive action to protect your granny or grandchildren? Get them out of it. It’s extraordinary during calimas to see supposedly intelligent people going for strenuous bike rides or hiking uphill, their poor old lung trees opened up wide for maximum dust damage. It would be a whole lot healthier to take up chain smoking, which leads us neatly to New Year ’s resolutions and our penchant for setting ourselves up for annual failure at giving up unhealthy habits in favour of healthy ones; give up calimas, forget the rest.

I must share it with that nice Nigerian oil minister who has been helping me with my investments. But it’s the so-called ‘family and friends’ frauds which ensnare most victims today. Scammers trick targets into believing that their loved ones are in dire financial need, or that they require money for medical treatment. Last year, one in 10 young folks fell for it to the tune of more than €500 each on average, according to a recent study. One in 20 of the older folks shelled out just under €200. Lest the wrinklies become too smug, they do indeed get caught more by criminals pretending to be household-name companies. I have a neighbour with a serious vision problem; it was obscured by dollar signs, or why else would he have handed over half his savings

Away from such scams there are the well-oiled classics. Last month I won the United Nations lottery. Again. All I had to do was pay a substantial currency clearing charge and the untold riches would be mine. Yeah, right. So be savvy before reaching for your purse. If cries for help just might be legitimate, call back and insist on irrefutable proof of the situation described. Golden payment rule: when in doubt, don’t. The day someone phones saying my wife is stranded and needs cash, no deal buddy. But heaven help me if it’s true.
THERE you are, happily minding your own mouseclicks, and up pops a sign: ‘your computer has a virus!’ Relax, it usually hasn’t. But ‘scareware’ attacks are increasingly common, leading victims to install the suggested virus remover on their computer which then surrenders its control to the hijacker and money changes hands. Most times you can safely ignore any virus warning which isn’t from your trusted antivirus program (you have got one installed, right?). If the spoof virus warning freezes your machine (it happens), just use the failsafe option; reboot your computer. Can’t do that either, at least the usual way? Then it’s emergency-stop time; simply hold down the physical power button until the computer powers off. Odds are it’s hasta la vista ‘virus’ when you start up again.

She’s not as young as she used to be, and I feel needs a bit of molly-coddling. ‘Turn the gas on,’ she pleaded. At this time of year we can expect several near-zero nights. I daren’t leave the gas on all night for her, but alternatively I can’t leave her shivering. The solution hung in the air between us, an elephant in the room that neither of us cared to mention. ‘I’ll get you a coat.’ ‘Can’t you just leave the gas on?’ ‘No, it’s too dangerous. I’ll get you a coat, you’ll love it,’ I fibbed. I remembered how hard it had been to get her to accept a collar. I got her an attractive greenish-yellow
jumper with a button-down collar and neatly rolled sleeves. ‘Come here.’ She came here, and no lamb has ever gone to the slaughter with more mute appeal for mercy in their eyes. With all sorts of jolly and encouraging admonitions I inserted her head and arms into the relevant apertures and gave her a brisk rub. ‘There! That’s better, isn’t it?’ ‘I can’t move. I’m paralysed,’ uttered the lamb, standing four-square, the only part of her capable of movement being her eyes. In order to take her mind off the awful fate that had befallen her, I had purposely put her coat on immediately before giving her her dinner. Was my animal psychology right?

The honorary title recognises individuals who stand out for their influence in the community, and their research into local history, customs and traditions. This is the first time the official chronicler recognition
has been awarded in Albox, Mayor Francisco Torrecillas saying Diego Carrillo is the ideal person for the title. A tax inspector in Cartagena, Diego is there at every cultural and sporting event in Albox, camera in hand. His own association also organises annual events in the municipality, including the route of the almond and the San Silvestre race; Diego is himself a keen runner.

Mobile snatch GUARDIA CIVIL arrested a 39-year-old man for stealing a mobile phone from a games hall in the Almanzora Valley. The owner of the phone said they had left the mobile valued at over €1,000 on top of one of the machines for a minute, but when they went back it was gone. Security camera footage allowed the Guardia to identify the person who had taken advantage of the victim’s absent-mindedness and pocket the mobile, officers managing to track him down several days later.
Rain damage repair help DEFINITIVELY repairing damage caused by heavy rains back in 2016 in Los Carrascos and on the Limaria-Higuerales road in Arboleas is now on the cards following the news the government will subsidise half the cost of the outstanding works. New Mercedes CLA Coupe GERMAN car maker MercedesBenz has unveiled its new CLA Coupe, a car the company says is the most emotional vehicle in its class and highly intelligent. The company said the car comes equipped with features including augmented reality to aid with navigation and a voice commands feature. They come as part of an Intelligent Drive package which also includes features designed to improve aerodynamics and assist with driving. Ola Kallenius, responsible for research and development at Mercedes’ parent company Daimler,
said the car showed the company was going to the next level. “The CLA offers a great deal of automotive intelligence. By recognising gestures it facilitates natural operation,” Kallenius said. The CLA comes as a four-door coupe. Mercedes said the design was ‘seductive’ and that it represented ‘sensual purity.’ The car combines a long stretched entry line above the windows and frameless doors which give it a sporty and elegant look. The front section is striking and is raked forward like a shark while the long stretched bonnet
features powerdomes. Gordon Wagener, head of design at Daimler, said the car had the potential to become a modern design icon. “It impresses with its perfect proportions reflecting the first design sketch; a long stretched bonnet, a compact greenhouse, a wide
track with exposed wheel arches and our typical GT rear end with a strong distinctive ‘Coke-bottle shoulder,’” Wagener said. The car is powered by a fourcylinder petrol engine which delivers 225 horsepower. Its Intelli-

ROAD TEST by Nick Fletcher THE premium SUV sector has been mostly dominated by German contenders in recent years, but now Swedish manufacturer Volvo is vying with the best of them and its latest XC60 model underlines why. This spacious and luxurious SUV has its own distinct persona, immaculate build quality and strong reliability record, and with wellequipped D3 entry versions starting at €42,050 (£37,770) is also very price competitive. In the line-up there are two diesel engines, one petrol unit and a plug-in hybrid available and my test model was a midrange D5 R-Design Pro powered by a 2.0-litre 235hp diesel engine with eightspeed automatic gearbox and all-wheel drive. This version costs €55,478 (£49,835). The diesel engine is smooth and relatively quiet and offers a top speed of 220kph (137mph), a quick 0100kph time of 6.8 seconds, and average fuel economy of

SEAT breaks records
HISTORIC YEAR: The new Arona drove sales growth. SPANISH car maker SEAT delivered 517,600 vehicles last year, 10.5 per cent more than in 2017 in what is the sixth straight year of growth for the firm. The amount of vehicles sold is the largest in the company’s history. Last year ’s result broke the record set in 2000, of 514,800 vehicles delivered, according to SEAT’s own figures. Luca de Meo, president of SEAT, said the figure showed the company’s strategy and models were a success. “The positive financial results we have gained make us optimistic about facing the challenges posed by the sector. “SEAT aims to be a rele-
vant player in the new era of the automotive industry,” de Meo said. SEAT said in a statement that its new Arona SUV was the main driver of sales for the company. The company sold 98,900 Aronas in 2018, its first full year of sales. The Arona now stands alongside the Ibiza, Leon and Ateca as one of the four major pillars of the brand, SEAT said. The Leon remains the company’s bestselling model, with 158,300 units of the car sold last year. A total of 136,100 Ibizas were sold while there were 78,200 units of the Ateca delivered.
Wayne Griffiths, head of sales and marketing for SEAT, said 2018 was a historic year for the company. “We are one of the fastest growing brands in Europe, achieving the highest sales in our history thanks to double digit growth in major markets such as Germany, Britain and France,” Griffiths said. “In Spain, SEAT also increased sales by more than 10 per cent and we are the strong leader in the total market,” Griffiths added. The company said the major new development this year would be its Tarraco, which is due to arrive in dealerships in the coming weeks.

Olympics return hopes TRIATHLON athlete Javier Gomez Noya has said he hopes to compete in the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo. The five-time world champion recently competed in the Ironman tournament in Hawaii where he came 11th. Gomez said he did not want to go to the Olympics just to participate, indicating he will put his all into the 2020 games. “I have decided to return to the short distances and the world series to try to qualify for Tokyo. I want to see how I respond now to Olympic distances and if I look competitive I will look for classification in the Games,” he said. Gomez added he had made mistakes while competing at the Ironman in Hawaii’s A Kona. “It was a different year in 2018 and as you know it was not as I would have liked,” Gomez said. “I made a mistake and I paid dearly, I risked too much on the bike,” he added. Gomez said he planned to focus on short distances as part of his training. “After 15 years in the short distances I needed to refresh my mind. My body was asking
for a change. “The learning was very good. It helped me to know myself much better, to get out of my comfort zone. “It is more complicated than it seems. There are factors in the short distance that do not have relevance in long distances and competing with different rivals always motivates,” Gomez said.

Cueto, from Oviedo, was also a writer and his works include Pasion Catodica, The Society of Mass Consumption and Mythologies of Modernity. He graduated in Law from the University of Oviedo, in Political Science from the University of Algiers and in Journalism from the University of Madrid. He worked as a columnist and a television critic for Spanish newspaper El Pais and also collaborated for the Cadena SER.

Nadal wins in National Sports Awards Open comeback SPAIN’S King and Queen have presided over this year’s National Sports Awards which recognises the achievements of athletes from the country. King Felipe and Queen Letizia handed out a total of 12 trophies in a ceremony held at the Royal Palace of El Pardo in Madrid last week. They were joined by the
King and Queen Emeritus Juan Carlos and Sofia, as well as government officials including Spain’s Minister for Sports and Culture. The King Felipe Award was given to tennis player Rafael Nadal this year. The award recognises an athlete for distinguishing themselves in national and international matches, with Nadal unable to attend due to being at the Australian Open. The Queen Letizia Award went to karate star Sandra Sanchez. The award is given to female athletes in recognition of their sporting achievements throughout the previous year. Golfer Jon Rahm took
home the Juan Carlos Award which also recognises an athlete for their achievements. Manchester United’s Juan Mata was given the Sofia Award for nobility and fair play in their role as a sportsperson. Other winners included Olympic athlete Maria Vicente, the A La Par Foundation special needs advocacy group, Costa Rica’s Keylor Navas, Spain’s Men and Women’s Hockey team, the Valencia Region’s Trinidad Alfonso Foundation, Melilla City, Madrid’s Ortega and Gasset secondary school film directors Javier Fesser and David Marques and handball coach Juan de Dios Roman.
S PA N I S H t e n n i s p l a y e r Rafael Nadal has knocked James Duckworth out of the Australian Open in the first round of the tournament days after recovering from injuries. Nadal, 32, beat the Australian by 6-4, 6-3 and 7-5 in a game that lasted two hours and 15 minutes. The Mallorcan had previously spent 129 days recovering from and being treated for injuries to his right leg and abdomen. Nadal said on the court after the match that he was very happy to have gotten through the first round. “It’s not an easy comeback after a lot of months, and especially against a player who’s super aggres-
sive,” he said. Duckworth, 26, was considered a wild card in the tournament. Nadal seemed to be back in full form following his absence from the sport and even introduced a remodelled serve into the game. Nadal won a total of 74 per cent of firstserve points and delivered six aces. He was broken to love when serving at 5-3 in the third.
Nadal said his being broken was not down to the new serve. “My serve worked well. There were a lot of good positions after the first serve. I felt solid with the second,” Nadal said. Nadal had been forced to pull out of the Brisbane International earlier this month due to thigh strain. The 32-year-old is now set to face Australian Matthew Ebden in the second round of the Open.
