RESCUE teams rushing to find a two-year-old boy who fell down a 107-metre well in the Sierra de Totalan on Sunday have unearthed human hair belonging to the toddler. Government delegate in Andalucia, Alfonso Rodriquez Gomez de Celis, told Spanish press ‘some hair was found in the tunnel and the tests carried out by the Guardia Civil certify that it is the child’s.’ He added that ‘this gives us confirmation that the child is there, in that well.’ Members of the Guardia Civil claim the size of the shaft - 25 centimetres in diameter - has made it difficult for workers to gain access to the child. An initial attempt to send a camera down the hole, which was reportedly dug during a search for water, failed after a blockade of sand and stones proved impassable at around 73 metres deep. At the time of going to press, workers said they are now digging a second, wider tunnel which they will connect to the first well, allowing them access to the bottom of the hole. He told El Pais ‘I wish it were impossible for him to be
inside the well, like I’ve heard it being said,’ adding ‘I wish it was me buried down there.’ Outraged locals are now querying why the speculative hole - which is required by law to be covered - was left open. The man allegedly responsible for digging the well, Antonio Sanchez, told
Spanish media he had covered the opening with stones and dirt. This is the second tragedy to hit the distraught family. The parents lost their threeyear-old son Oliver last spring, when he died of a sudden heart attack while walking down the street with his parents in 2017.

Brexit worries by Joe Gerrard BRITISH expatriates in Spain were left facing more uncertainty over how Brexit will affect them after MPs in London voted to reject Prime Minister Theresa May’s Withdrawal Agreement on Tuesday. MPs voted the deal down by a margin of 432 to 202, the biggest parliamentary defeat of any government since 1924. May said every day that passed without the issue being resolved meant more uncertainty, more bitterness and more rancour. “I have always believed that the best way forward is to leave in an orderly way with a good deal,” the Prime Minister said on Tuesday. The rejection of the deal, which included protections for British citizens legally registered in EU countries including Spain, leaves expatriates in an uncertain situation. Anne Hernandez, president of the Brexpats in Spain expa-
triate advocacy group, told Euro Weekly News she was “extremely concerned” about the result. “There are more than 300,000 British people here who work and have invested in the Spanish economy. “We can be thankful that bilateral agreements have been reached between London and Madrid which protect some of our rights. “Other than that all I can say to expatriates is to make sure they are legally registered as residents in Spain,” Hernandez said. Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez said Madrid regretted the result of the vote. “Spain is working on contingency measures and it is prioritising the rights of citizens and residents,” Sanchez said. by Sally Underwood A COURT in Torrox has announced it will begin a criminal investigation into the mayor of Nerja, Rosa Arrabal. Also being brought to court will be the town’s former mayor, Jose Alberto Armijo, as well as 11 others, in
a case involving an illegal landfill at Rio de la Miel, in the national park. In 2017, the same court began a preliminary investigation into 34 people for their alleged part in a dumping ground at the park of Tejeda, Almijara and Alhama. A judge leading the investigation explained the initial phase was over
and 13 people now face criminal charges. The site, which was previously a working quarry owned by the council, later became an illegal landfill for 16 years, between 2000 and September 2016. The Public Prosecutor’s Office labelled the landfill ‘a genuine environmental disaster.’

Two babies injured in fire SEVEN people, including two teenagers and two babies, have suffered from smoke inhalation following a fire in Nerja. Firefighters were forced to battle flames to rescue a family taking refuge in the basement of a first floor apartment block in the town’s centre, where the fire broke out. A neighbour told one publication the family’s lives were saved by their decision to hide in the basement, rather than the property’s rear terrace, where the strength of the flames would have left them trapped. Another two families living in the building were able to evacuate themselves, except for two teenagers who emergency workers had to save from the terrace where they had hidden from the fire. Firemen are still investigating the cause of the blaze, but believe it broke out in the kitchen of the first floor apartment following an electrical failure. The fire devastated the home, completely burning out its kitchen and living room, and damaging the rest of the property. The incident took place in a building opposite the Nerja police headquarters on Calle Virgen del Pilar. Raluca Petrica, one of the block’s residents told one publication the couple living in the ground floor apartment had only moved in with their two infant children just three days earlier. Ms Petrica lives above the flat with her husband. She said: “As soon as we saw the smoke and the smell, we went down to the street quickly, fortunately there were no people affected with burns, only by smoke inhalation, the firemen arrived very quickly and they took them out.”

The Mezquita-Catedral de Cordoba (Mosque-Cathedral of Cordoba) has been revered as a religious site by both Catholics and Muslims. It is now called the Catedral de Nuestra Señora de la Asuncion (Cathedral of our Lady of the Assumption).
A Visigothic church built in honour of St Vincent the Third is believed to have been the first structure to stand on the site of the current Mezquita-Catedral. After the arrival of the Muslim Moors in Spain, which became Al-Andalus in the eighth century, the church was split into Christian and Muslim areas. It was then bought by Emir Abd al-Rahman I and torn down to make way for the then Mosque in 784. The Mosque underwent several alterations over the following

New homes NERJA Council has now approved initial plans which will allow 427 social housing homes to be built. At a meeting to discuss the project, councillors signed off on proposals over how the tender and bidding process will take place. The project is expected to provide hundreds of rent-free homes, as well as a hotel. Councillor Jose Maria Rivas, ex-

plained: “This sector is very important, one of the largest to develop in the municipality.” The work is expected to exceed €900,000, and plans for the site began more than eight years ago. Councillor Rivas said: “This push will boost and improve the local economy.” The meeting also discussed how to connect up existing water and electricity supplies to the new buildings.

Residents TV outages complaints RESIDENTS in Alfarnate are complaining they have been left unable to watch television for two months following technical problems. Salvador Urdiales, the town’s mayor, says the problem has been caused by telephone operators who have been installing 4G services to provide better mobile phone coverage. Mayor Urdiales also said the council had been pressing the company to fix the issue as quickly as possible but recent cold weather

Cave celebrations continue A SERIES of events to commemorate the 60th anniversary of the discovery of the Nerja Caves continues. Highlights will include personal tours by the caves’ original discoverers in April, as well as visits enlivened by the music of string quartets in May. On January 12, 1959, a group of five friends stumbled upon the caves, which are now a thriving tourist attraction. The four remaining discoverers, Manuel and Miguel Muñoz, Jose Torres and Francisco Navas, and the widow of the fifth, Jose Luis Barbero, attended a ceremony to mark the occasion. Since then, more than 18 million people have passed through the attraction, which covers around a third of the entire cave network. Last year there were 450,000 visitors, 12 per cent more than the previous year.

Near miss by Sally Underwood ONE driver in Almuñecar had a lucky escape after their car almost crashed through a barrier on the N340. The local resident escaped unharmed after their vehicle narrowly avoided dropping six metres into a tunnel below after it left the road. Members of the fire services said the car would have fallen into the entrance of the busy Taramay tunnel below if it had not been for a crash barrier.

Dramatic birth A RESCUE boat carrying 332 migrants saved from the Alboran Sea was forced to stop in Motril Port for a woman in labour. Officials on the vessel SAR Salvage Mastelero, which had rescued six boats of migrants, decided to make the detour during their journey transferring the immigrants to Malaga, when
one woman showed signs of going into labour. According to reports, the woman, who was around nine months pregnant, is well and has been taken to Motril Hospital. The rest of the passengers continued to Malaga. Among them were 78 women and 14 children.

Avocado thefts rise AN agricultural group has cl ai m ed t hat m or e t han 30,000 kilos of avocados have been st ol en f r om Axarquia farms so far this year. The Asaja Malaga organisation said continuing high prices have made avocados a t arget f or thieves. The group claimed police should be doing more to patrol farms during the current harvesting season. Asaja Malaga said while avocados continue to sell for more than €3 a kilo, thefts have increased including at one farm in Velez-Malaga which was allegedly robbed twice in three days. ALL OPEN: Road works in Competa have not affected business.
Open for business CONCERNS over recent road works on Competa’s main artery have prompted small business owners to reassure customers the town is open for business as normal. The major reform project to Avenida de la Constitucion, the main thoroughfare through the small town, is expected to last for weeks, and will see the previous road surface modernised. Debbie Howard, owner of food shop Todo Express on Avenida de la Constitucion, said businesses were trading as normal and drivers are simply using the back road to Comepta; the Camino de Archez. Ms Howard said the works had not had any negative impacts, explaining parking had even improved as drivers chose to use some of Competa’s alternative parking bays on Camino de Archez, easing congestion at the municipal car park.

THE Euro Weekly News has exclusively caught up with some of the star of ‘Bargain Loving Brits in the Sun,’ episode two before the show heads to Torrox next month. This popular reality television series, which charts the lives of Britons who are determined to carve out new lives for themselves in sunny Spain on a shoestring budget, airs on a Thursday night on Channel 5 at 8pm UK time. Episode two will see viewers introduced to ‘the cat lady of the Costa Del Sol,’ Londone r K e lly D oole y. K e lly feeds more than 100 street cats, as well a s running a tra pping a nd ne ute ring scheme. But the vet bills have piled up - she owed €2,000 at one point - so Kelly has come up with a plan to help raise some cash towards the bills, a flea market outside the bar where she works. But can she raise enough to pay for her next visit to the vet? Kelly told the Euro Weekly News she began helping local cats because they are, “treated like rats here and get left behind.” She explains while she was initially, “quite shy,” during filming, soon

The passengers are all British and the destination is a secret, but can Margaret sell enough tickets to break even? Margaret told the Euro Weekly News she does not, “do it for the money, just for a day out,” explaining her trips have been popular for years, offering residents the chance to, “go out, have lunch, have a bottle of wine, and come home.” Bargain Loving Brits in the Sun will travel to Torrox for episode five in February, when viewers will be introduced to local woman Jacqui Harrison and her family.

Local winners scoop €1m prize TWO lucky friends from Torrox have scooped a €1 million prize in the Euromillions lottery. Fernando Rico and Salvador Nuñez, friends since childhood, have each walked away with €402,000 after tax, and say the local community has been quick to congratulate them. Mr Rico, who works at a frozen food store just 50-metres from the lottery shop where he bought his ticket, told Spanish media: “We are going to use it to cover bills, pay the mortgage and give the family a treat.” His wife, Virginia Recio, added: “It’s a huge joy, because we have never won anything in the Lottery.” Both winners have wives and two children, and Mr Nuñez, who works at a drinks shop, said he will use the money for his family, “to help pay for their studies, buy a holiday apartment and live a more relaxed life.”
School space POLITICIANS in Velez-Malaga are insisting one local school needs more space. Members of the Izquierda Unida (IU) party claim the Reñidero school needs to be extended and councillors should buy up the plot next to the building. The party said the school would then be able to, “extend the patio and the sport tracks, which at the moment present architectural innumerable barriers and which are very small for a school that annually hosts around 500 pupils.”

A DEAL has been struck which will allow British citizens in Spain and Spanish citizens in Britain to vote and stand in local elections after Brexit, Spain’s Foreign Minister said. Josep Borrell said the pact covers the 240,000 British citizens registered as residents in Spain and the roughly 150,000 Spanish people in Britain. Spanish government sources have also confirmed diplomats from Madrid and London are in the process of closing off the deal. Borrell said: “Bilateral agreements between Spain and Britain will guarantee that Spaniards who are living there and Britons here will maintain will their rights, even the right to vote in municipal elections.” The deal aims to maintain current EU arrangements covering voting. It is similar to agreements Spain has with Norway, New Zealand and some Latin American countries. British ambassador Simon Manley was set to formally announce the deal this week. It comes as Borrell said Madrid was making plans for Brexit, including a no-deal scenario which the Foreign Minister said would be a ‘catastrophe.’

Charmaine Arbouin told an expatriate Brexit meeting, any guarantees made to British citizens in Spain would only apply to those legally residing in Spain. All EU citizens living in a member state which is not their home country are legally required to register if they want to stay longer than 90 days regardless, the Consul added. It comes as the government’s defeat in Tuesday’s vote on the deal amplified an already uncertain situation for Britain and for its citizens at home and abroad. “The Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez has said he wants all people living here to continue to do so with a minimum of fuss. Man feared dead after boat fire A BRITISH man is missing after heading out on a motorboat from Lanzarote’s Marina Rubicon port, which later burst into flames on Friday January 4. According to the Security and Emergencies Consortium, members of the fire brigade, Maritime Rescue,
Guardia Civil and Emerlan proceeded to extinguish the fire. Emergency services found an empty vessel after activating a rescue operation, although a man’s wallet with identification was recovered in the sea close to the boat. The identity of the missing man has not been released

Save Soraya A MIJAS and Marbella-based business has organised fundraising events to aid a local woman who has fought cancer for two years and needs money for life-saving treatment. Yorkshire Linen said they are now taking part in the Save Soraya campaign in aid of Soraya Bradley-Perez, 32, who has Leukaemia and ovarian cancer. Steph Smith, of Yorkshire Linen, told Euro Weekly News the money needed to be raised as quickly as possible if Soraya was to live. “Many of us who work for Yorkshire Linen have got kids and I’m sure we would all like the community to step up if our children were in this situation,” Ms Smith said. Soraya needs around €500,000 to undergo immunotherapy treatment. The family has appealed to the Junta de Andalucia for funding but is waiting for a response. A quiz and curry night has

Bullfighting ‘ban’ was wrong A COURT in Alicante has ruled a council was wrong for trying to stop bullfighting locally. A judge decided Villena Council had put in place ‘insurmountable obstacles’ hindering a charity bullfight in Plaza de Toros last September. A local cultural organisation, ‘Peña Cultural Taurina,’ took the issue to court, arguing the
council was standing in the way of a cultural tradition, and claiming it had behaved unconstitutionally. The ruling found the local authority’s obligation was for the ‘preservation of common cultural heritage,’ including bullfighting. A judge said Villena Council was no “exception to this legally-established maxim,” adding, “public authorities must safeguard bullfighting.” Last February, the Peña Cultural Taurina won another case against Villena Council after it was denied permission to hold a charity bull run on September 7, 2016. At the time, a court found the decision had been based on the ‘subjective opinions of the members of the cultural commission, which are displeased by such shows.’

The average price of electric here is €0.21 per kilowatt hour, meaning costs quickly mount up as temperatures drop. One way to avoid high electricity bills, however, is to use energy-saving tactics. According to one price comparison website Kelisto.es, it is possible to save up to €200 a year by replacing traditional light bulbs with LED ones, switching older appliances for ones with a maximum energy efficiency rating, and not leaving appliances on standby. Money can also be saved by sealing doors and windows as up to 30 per cent of heat is lost this way. Use timers for
heaters, so you only use energy when you need it most, or install a smart meter to monitor how much electric you use, and also help keep costs down. Finally, it often pays to shop around so why not check out a price comparison website to see whether you are getting the best utility deal for your money. Climate plan for big firms SPANISH government officials have said they will make all companies listed on the country’s stock exchange, detail their impact on the environment as part of wider climate change plans. The new rules are due to apply to companies regardless of which industry or sector they are in. Similar rules have previously applied to large energy firms. The measures come as part of the government’s National Integrated Energy and Climate Plan which officials hope to pass by decree.

Union opposes job cut plan A SPANISH trade union has said it will fight plans from a British telecommunications company to cut worker numbers in Spain by up to around 24 per cent. The UGT said Vodafone’s plan to slash up to 1,200 jobs was ‘unnecessary and wrong’ and that staff were not responsible for the firm’s performance. Around 5,100 people work for the company’s Spanish arm. It comes as the London-based company sent an Employment Regulation File (ERE) to three trade unions detailing plans to dismiss staff after a fall in revenue last year. ‘This proposal seeks to reverse negative trends in our business, strengthen its sustainability, protect investments and create a more competitive organisation which is better adapted to customer needs,’ the statement said. The Spanish division’s British parent company the Vodafone Group announced plans to cut its European costs by €1.2 billion in the next three years last November. Vodafone Spain posted falls in revenue of 3.2 per cent from April to September 2018. Gross operating profits fell by 27.8 per cent during the same period.
SPAIN has come second in European countries in the amount invested in its hotel sector last year despite money coming into tourist hotspot Barcelona falling by almost half. Data from the CBRE industry consultant showed investment in the Spanish hotel industry reached around €4.9 billion in 2018, up 33 per cent on the previous year. Investment in Barcelona stood at €232 million, a drop of 45 per cent believed to have been brought on by ongoing uncertainty over the Catalan independence issue.

EU benefit CUT: Calviño has cut GDP forecasts. SPANISH Gross Domestic Product (GDP) is predicted to grow by 2.2 per cent this year, 0.1 per cent less than initially predicted, according to the country’s Economy Minister. Nadia Calviño said the revision was due to the government being forced to aim for a faster cutting of Spain’s government spending deficit. “If we had stuck to our deficit reduction target we
would have revised the prediction for GDP upward,” Calviño said. The government is now aiming to cut the deficit to 1.3 per cent of GDP after previously aiming for 1.8 per cent. The change came after the conservative Partido Popular (PP), which has an outright majority in the Spanish Senate, threatened to block the budget if deficit reduction targets were relaxed.
SPAIN has received almost €8.1 billion from the EU for 110 projects under the bloc’s Strategic Investment Plan, according to data from the European Commission which found that the country came fourth in terms of those who benefitted most.
Growth plan BASQUE telecommunications firm Euskaltel said it hopes to attract some 90,000 customers in the next four years with plans to move into Cantabria, Cataluña, La Rioja, Leon and Navarra which chief executive Francisco Arteche said was a ‘natural step.’
Media firm fine threat SPAIN’S competition watchdog has said it will fine two leading media companies by up to €30 million after ruling they abused their dominant market position, unless they stop their practices. The National Commission of Markets and Competition (CNMC) claimed Mediaset and Atresmedia both worked to carve up the Spanish television advertising market between them.
The claims follow a 10-month investigation. The CNMC alleged the firms made advertisers and media agencies obey a minimum quota for their channels under a system of bonuses and penalties. Such a move would be illegal under market competition rules. The companies claim the practices are commonplace in the industry and added they would take the case to Spain’s National Court if they are sanctioned.

Awright! I see another youngster has been stabbed to death in what appears to be a gang-related murder in London. I in no way mean to undermine the tragedy of this 14-year old’s death. THUGS: Taking over city streets. from family and friends of what a ‘lovely, well liked young man he was,’ I’m afraid the subsequent ‘selfies’ published on the media of this young man tell a different story. In self-confessed ‘trapper’ (street slang for drug courier) mode, showing him masked and hooded, astride a moped, clutching fistfuls of £50 and
£20 notes and making a gun sign, rather sullies the insistence by his mother that he was a ‘loving, caring boy, who had no connection with drug gangs.’ Yet another family would appear to be in denial of their offspring running riot and fuelling the violence and gang culture which is afflict-
ing Mayor Khan’s London. Talking generally about the gang-related violence that seems to be on the up, it is surely the job of families to keep their children on the straight and narrow. If families would do their jobs and give more love and attention to their children, instead of in many cases using them as benefit cows and letting them run riot and undisciplined around gang infested streets, they may go some way to easing the problem. As it is these young boys and girls will continue to turn to the adult gangsters to try and retain some semblance of belonging and cohabitation among people who at least give the appearance of caring. It’s the families of these youngsters that need to get their acts together. Waiting till their offspring either suffer (or instigate) horrific deaths, before they announce to the world how much they ‘loved and cared’ for them, is too late. Children need to be consistently convinced and assured of these feelings from day one. They need to have it demonstrated by routine and the security of family life. TECH FOR THE TIMID A RAY of hope for those of us well into life’s injury time; youngsters are twice as likely to be scammed by internet fraudsters. Well that’s a relief. I must share it with that nice Nigerian oil minister who has been helping me with my investments. But it’s the so-called ‘family and friends’ frauds which ensnare most victims today. Scammers trick targets into believing that their loved ones are in dire financial need, or that they require money for medical treatment. Last year, one in 10 young folks fell for it to the tune of more than €500 each on average, according to a recent study. One in 20 of the older folks shelled out just under €200. Lest the wrinklies become too smug, they do indeed get caught more by criminals pretending to be household-name companies. I have a neighbour with a serious vision problem; it was obscured by dollar signs, or why else would he have handed over half his savings

Or has been robbed, was arrested and needs bail, or has been detained by a famous store intending to press shoplifting charges unless the expensive item involved is paid for. Away from such scams there are the well-oiled classics. Last month I won the United Nations lottery. Again. All I had to do was pay a substantial currency clearing charge and the untold riches would be mine. Yeah, right. So be savvy before reaching for your purse. If cries for help just might be legitimate, call back and insist on irrefutable proof of the situation described. Golden payment rule: when in doubt, don’t. The day someone phones saying my wife is stranded and needs cash, no deal buddy. But heaven help me if it’s true.
Anti antiviral THERE you are, happily minding your own mouseclicks, and up pops a sign: ‘your computer has a virus!’ Relax, it usually hasn’t. But ‘scareware’ attacks are increasingly common, leading victims to install the suggested virus remover on their computer which then surrenders its control to the hijacker and money changes hands. Most times you can safely ignore any virus warning which isn’t from your trusted antivirus program (you have got one installed, right?). If the spoof virus warning freezes your machine (it happens), just use the failsafe option; reboot your computer. Can’t do that either, at least the usual way? Then it’s emergency-stop time; simply hold down the physical power button until the computer powers off. Odds are it’s hasta la vista ‘virus’ when you start up again.

More live music please ONE of my New Year’s resolutions this year (as well as the usual promises to myself that I will maybe try and shift a bit of weight!), is that I have promised myself to get out and see more live music. When I say live music, I mean proper live music, singers and bands, with instruments, who can actually play and sing. Musicians who have actually learnt their craft and have rehearsed enough so that they know their repertoire and can perform it without spending their time on stage staring at an iPad or music stand. There are some fabulous venues around and a lot of great gigs. It’s a wonderful thing to go out and be entertained by a band, especially when they are more imaginative with their setlist. I recently saw three different bands in two weeks, and their setlists were virtually identical. There are
some talented musicians around: surely it’s not much to ask for a few surprises? With the odd exception, I won’t be going out to see singers singing solely to backing tracks, glorified Karaoke singers. I can go to a Karaoke night for that!

In this year’s speech, Felipe VI reminded all those present that Spain’s flag reflects its history and diversity. Nice idea Felipe, and waving the flag as a symbol of diversity is a good try but the red and yellow flag - an even more recent arrival than Britain’s Union Jack and originally Spain’s naval ensign - was taken over years ago by Spain’s most conservative elements. It symbolises Right and extreme RightWing demonstrations protesting against every liberal step forward which Spain takes, and naturally everything which a socialist government introduces. As Spanish populism grows, waving the flag beloved by Spanish nationalists could divide far more than it unites.

you all.” The elimination series will see 10 contestants live and work together as they compete to win a contract assisting top make-up artists. Garland is global make-up director for L’Oreal Paris and has worked with the likes of K a t e M o s s , K e n d a l l J e n n e r, Lady Gaga and Alexander McQueen. Skinner has worked in genres including theatre, ballet, film and TV. Guest judges from the world of fashion and film will also appear although no names have been revealed as yet. The series will air later this year and follows in the footsteps of similar shows such as BBC Two’s The Great British Sewing Bee and The Great Pottery Throw Down.
Never to old to be a maverick FOR more than three decades I have received an ‘egotistical’ year-end newsletter from a friend and ex-colleague, Barbara Smoker. Sent by ‘snail mail’ to her many friends, relations and admirers, her entertaining letters detail what she’s been up to in the previous year. They are proof positive that age is no obstacle to an active and productive life, for Barbara, a writer and activist on many radical issues, is still gamely engaged in various campaigns, despite having turned 95 last June. In several of her missives, Barbara informed her readers that she was working on a memoir, and when I received her latest letter, I was overjoyed to learn that she had finally completed it, and that My Godforsaken Life: Memoir of a Maverick, had just been published. I first met Barbara in the 1970’s when I was a member of the AntiApartheid Movement, a gay rights ac-

azine, Barbara took on the role of proofreader and periodic contributor. When I last saw Barbara, it was at a Secularist of the Year function in London in 2017, where I was presented
with a Lifetime’s Achievement Award for my campaigning against racism, homophobia and the presence of religion in government and places of learning. She looked marvellous, as the picture in this column shows. But what I did is nothing compared to what Barbara accomplished. Apart from her frequent speaking engagements on radio and TV, and conducting non-religious weddings and funerals, she financed the manufacture of the first Make Love, Not War badges that were popular in Britain during the 1960’s. Being at the forefront of radical movements for 70 years, she has combatted religion, and opposed nuclear weapons and illegal wars. At the same time she was, and still is, championing humanism, women’s right to choose abortion, prison reform, freedom of speech, and voluntary euthanasia. Her memoir, according to publisher Thornwick Press, ‘is a compelling account of her intellectual journey, her ruthless focus on ethics and principles, and her eccentric bloody-mindedness in challenging the accepted and wrong wisdom of the day.’
Barbara was born into a devout Roman Catholic family. As a girl she was torn between becoming a nun or a writer. At the age of 26 after war service in Ceylon, she renounced Christianity and joined the ranks of the secular, humanist army. For 25 years she was President NSS and led speaking tours in the USA and India to promote atheism. She even teamed up at one point with Madalyn Murray O’Hair, the US atheist who was dubbed ‘America’s most hated woman’ after she won a court case which banned prayers and Bible readings in public schools. I had an invitation to visit O’Hair but unfortunately she was murdered in 1995 before I could get to meet her. The sad news in Barbara’s newsletter is that she was diagnosed last May with advanced breast cancer, but cancelled an operation. She said her decision was ‘as rational and irrevocable as the one I made on November 5, 1949 when I renounced religion.’ She added: “In my opinion, medics give far too much priority to prolonging human life, irrespective of its quality - especially for oldies.”

Someone in the Canary Islands asked consular staff to persuade his hotel to give him a different room after a stray cat had ‘broken into’ his current one and peed on his bed. by Sally Underwood JANUARY is now in full swing, and with it a whole host of new beauty trends for the new year. Beauty insiders claim this will be the year when colour rules supreme; from hair and make-up to fashion and nails. Coral is set to be one of the biggest colours of the year, with experts predicting the look will be big in lip colours, blushers, and nails. There is also expected to be an overall trend towards bold lip colours, moving away from the more muted, natural look of previous years. Some beauty companies are placing their emphasis on matte lip colours, while others are still pushing a high-gloss trend. Either way, it is thought that bright pinks and oranges, as well as dramatic reds and berry shades will be on display this year. Another lip trend is expected to be for a fuller look, using a lip pencil or lipstick to trace slightly outside the lip line. Industry insiders say this will also mean using a slightly lighter shade on the centre of the bottom lip, to create a contoured, fuller look. For nails, powder finishes which last longer are set to be one of the year’s biggest trends.
These manicures, which are said to last longer than a traditional type, are somewhere between a regular manicure and acrylic nails. A professional will apply a base coat, and then instead of using UV rays to seal in the polish, will paint your fingernails using pots of acrylic powder which supply the colour and help the polish to set. The results are thought to be able to last between three and four weeks. While powder nails have been around for some years, experts believe they will increase in popularity this year due to their hardwearing nature. Finally, and in contrast to the matte look becoming popular elsewhere, will be the expected increase in glossy beauty products. Specifically, these are expected to be used on parts of the face where gloss is not traditionally placed. Beauty bloggers are saying a new selection of glosses are able to be used on the eyelids, giving a glowing, healthy look, which also appears natural. There is also a lean towards blushers which contain a small amount of sheen, and impart a glowing, flushed look to the skin, in place of a traditional blusher and highlighter combination.

IT can be daunting to change how you eat. We are told conflicting messages constantly in the media; ‘don’t drink red wine,’ then ‘one red wine a day is good for you’ and so on. Carbs have been taking the rap for a while now, but it is important to have a balanced view on which you should eat, and when. Unlike the popular Keto diet, it is not advisable to cut out carbs forever. Your body requires carbs for energy particularly if you exercise. If you don’t fuel your body with carbs and protein, your body will begin to store fat for energy. Many people believe carbs are simply bread, pasta, rice and potatoes. However, there are many good carbs which should be eaten including fruit, vegetables, oats, chickpeas, quinoa, lentils and beans. On high-carb days you can fill your diet with these, as long as you keep the fat content low that day. Green veg contains so much fibre, you can eat as much as you like! Be wary of fruit on low-carb days however, as some are extremely high in carbs. A banana for example is around a whopping 25g! Try and stick to red berries

Unfair pensions I AM pleased to see that the Spanish government is proposing to increase the pension for OAPs without restrictions, it would seem. Not so our UK government. How so, I hear you ask. Last April a new pension rate was introduced of £164.35 per week, £657.36 per month, £8,545.68 per year. Great, so far so good. But wait, if you were born before April 1951 you don’t get it, you stick on the old rate. So, if you are 67 tough. In my case I’m down £803.92 per year. I only found this information out through my company pension news sheet. How many of your readers are over 67? How many know they have been ripped off and by how much? I send this to Leapy as I love his column and no UK publication would print any of this, but I believe he would like to let readers know, in case they have not yet noticed due to the fluctuations of the pound against the Euro. I LIVE in Carvajal, Fuengirola for six months of the year. I have owned an apartment there for the last 16 years. One thing that spoils our visit to the lovely beach is seeing people extinguishing their cigarettes out in the sand. My wife and I are both smokers, we always take some sort of container with us to the beach to extinguish our cigarettes, then dispose of it at the end of the day in one of the many bins. The worst days are on a Sunday, when large families come to the beach and a lot of them discard their cooking oil, cigarettes, etc onto the beach. Can you imagine what the hundreds of thousands of cigarettes per year do to the sand? The colour of the sand would, I imagine, turn several shades lighter in time. In Portugal they have signs by the beach asking people to ‘respect the environment.’ The beaches are in pristine condition. It would not cost a fortune to put similar signs on the Spanish beaches. I am hoping that the appropriate Spainish authorities might take some action if they read this article. Bill (full name supplied)

UNCERTAINTIES surrounding Brexit show no sign of going away, but one thing we can be sure of is the importance of registering as a resident in Spain. British envoys including the country’s consul in southern Spain Charmaine Arbouin have called on expatriates to make sure they get their arrangements in order to safeguard their position post-Brexit. The consul told Euro Weekly News that only registered British residents could be sure their rights would be protected after Britain leaves the EU. Being properly registered as a resident in Spain will make your situation here more secure and it could save you a bureaucratic headache after Brexit which is due this March. The queue for registrations is likely to grow as we get closer to the planned Friday March 29 withdrawal date. If you need to get your residency you should aim to do so sooner rather than later. Residency, known as residencia in Spanish law, is not the same as fiscal tax residency. You may be down as a tax resident but this will not give you the protection that residencia does. Being registered in Spain will not only help you, but it will also benefit your local authority. Funding for local services including the police, fire brigade and ambulances is allocated depending on how many people are on the padron, a town’s register of its residents.

Porsche AG launch a new sports car named the 901, after a discussion over naming rights with Peugeot, and by early 1964 the sports car’s name is changed to 911. The rest as they say is history. Scroll forward to 2018 and Porsche is calling time on its seventh Generation of the 911, launching the eighth Generation on November 27 at the Los Angeles Auto Show. Between the launch of the first Generation in 1963 and the end of October 2018 some 55 years later, Porsche AG manufactured 1,049,330 series 911s. There are many amazing elements to the story of the 911. The evolution and refinements, the racing glory and wins, the sub eight-minute times on the Nürburgring. Yet in the mind’s eye of the Porsche 911 owner, little has changed yet everything has. The 911 is longer, wider, faster. Some might say tamer than the original 1963 sports car. Some argue the refinements have made the 911 an easier car to master. Mike Senker In my opinion Views of a Grumpy Old Man I AM writing this article on January 10 and the reason I’m telling you the date is that I want to know when is the official time to stop wishing everyone you meet, happy New Year. For me, it’s all done and dusted by January 6. The Xmas tree is down - not that we had one up in the first place - and as we are in Spain, Three Kings is a great guide. I actually think it sometimes looks sad when you drive around and see the Christmas lights still up. It’s back to normal and to double prove it pop in to a department store and see all the presents you bought, now at half price in the sales! I am a meat eater and I enjoy it, and to be honest I am getting a bit fed up by being attacked by my vegan friends. Why do you think you are so much better than me? Why do you think it’s OK to preach to me? If you don’t want to eat meat or fish or anything else that’s up to you and jolly good luck to you. But please stop preaching how healthy you are because you are a vegan. I have news for
you; some of the food you are eating is not as healthy as you think. I looked at vegan burgers which are full of processed fats like soyabean oil. Some contain MSG which is a terrible ingredient found a lot in Chinese food and can give you night horrors. So I’ll stick to my wagyu burgers thank you. The same applies with spreads; check what’s in them. I have to add here that if you are a vegan because of the concern for animals I do not have any argument with that. It’s just the ‘I’m healthier than you’ brigade. Another thing is ‘Oi Greggs, there is no such thing as a vegan sausage roll!’ It either is a sausage roll or it’s a pastry filled with ‘something’ but it’s not a sausage. Since protein is scarce when you avoid animal products, soy products like edamame, tofu, soy protein powder, and tempeh are often the replacements. The reality is that soy protein is very difficult to digest, a thyroid suppressive and estrogenic due to phytoestrogens. It also contains high levels of phytic acid which cause less absorption of nutrients, as well as trypsin inhibitors which can interfere with digestion. So that’s you told. I’m bracing myself for some serious rows about this. Here’s a question for you: How can you tell if someone is a vegan? Don’t worry, they will tell you.

Alongside the dominant and centrally positioned rev counter, typical for Porsche, two thin frameless displays supply further information to the driver. The Porsche 911 is not necessarily the most expensive sports car, some 911 variants may be acquired for as little as €100,000. Which is not so large a sum to buy into a legend. What’s in a name? has been a staple food for many cultures prepared from a dough of flour and water. Throughout recorded history it has been a prominent food in large parts of the world and is one of the oldest man-made foods, having been of significant importance since the dawn of agriculture. Bread may be leavened by various processes such as natural occurring sourdough microbes, using the natural yeast from the air around us, which is a traditional method like my granny used, but industrially produced yeast or high-pressure aeration is more common. Commercial bread usually contains additives to help improve texture, colour, shelf life and nutrition.
Give us this day our daily bread The best bread we have ever eaten though is the bread our grandmother used to make, and the recipe comes from her great grandmother. It goes back hundreds of years then suddenly after all these years, when we get bread so right and love it so much, we stop making and baking, and start buying bread from the shops, packed with additives, colourants and aeration agents, which makes it as light as a feather and often tasteless. Then we ask ourselves: what happened to real bread? My job as a leading chef is to recreate some of the world’s lost recipes and traditions and one of our most lost skills is making bread. We know bread is high in carbs so I have been looking at how to make bread with no carbs. I created a bread made from powdered nuts to create a nut flour instead of wheat flour. Nuts I am, and regulars have
seen me buying tons of almonds and eggs to replace wheat flour. It works really well except it tastes nothing like real bread and my grandmother’s bread still sticks in my head as the best. My grandmother used to make sourdough, so I recently started researching how to recreate it for our restaurant. First you need to make a starter which is to get the natural yeast activated into the flour. By that I mean it finds the wild yeast from the air in our environment and although it’s just flour and water mixed together (nothing else) in eight/10 days it will be bubbling (fermenting) naturally and smelling a little sour like vinegar. Then you take a spoonful of it and add it to equal quantities of flour and water, prove it and bake it. The result is amazing, the flavour is fantastic and once you have made the starter
(which takes patience) you never have to make it again as long as you always save some, it will go on forever and if you don’t want to make bread daily simply put the starter in your fridge. The fridge will slow down the bacteria and hold it until you need it again. Simply take it out of the fridge a couple of days before you need it, to make sure it’s active again. You will need to feed your starter with equal quantities of flour and water every day for at least seven days, (like feeding a pet) but its worth it! I made my first batch using an original recipe below which is hundreds of years old and we now serve it in the restaurant with creamy butter from Asturiana. It is perfect, so damn perfect and so delicious you will never want to buy bread again (unless you have to). For the restaurant it’s difficult because I have to have it every day and therefore
I developed some quicker natural recipes like my soda bread. No equipment for these breads are needed, no expense, just beautiful bread ready to bake. Nowadays we have a lot of gluten-free clients. Gluten-free bread has been created for people affected by gluten related disorders. Gluten-free bread is made with ground flours from a variety of materials such as almonds, rice, corn, or pulses such as beans, but since these flours lack gluten they don’t hold their shape as they rise. Additives such as xanthan gum, guar gum, hydroxypropyl methylcellulose, corn starch, or eggs are usually used to compensate for the lack of gluten and they usually contain more sugar to compensate for the lack of flavour so don’t think that these breads are healthier, because they are not! There are lots of things to consider, and we are here to help try to make the transition and life in Spain a little easier by compiling a series of helpful facts and figures relating to a variety of topics.
BELIEVE IN YOURSELF: Never give up on your dreams.
by Rob Shallis WITH 2019 here, we once again convince ourselves that it will be the year to make changes. ‘I’m going to join the gym,’ ‘lose weight,’ ‘make more money,’ ‘start a business.’ The list is endless, and of course at the time we mean it. Then the usual pattern ensues, procrastination eventually kicks in and we’re back to square one. The conscious mind makes the decision to change, but our deep rooted self-beliefs, limitations, fear and assumptions eventually prevail. Focusing on past results rather than future success makes progress virtually impossible. Short-term gratification triumphs over our pursuit for long-term objectives. Simply put, we give up. We externalise, placing blame on past situations and current circumstances to justify our decision to quit. The seeds we sow now are the seeds we reap. Do not give up. Discipline your behaviour to achieve the results you want and the outcome you desire will flourish. So, how do you break through the invisible wall to reach your goal and dreams? When others give up? In order to achieve these successes and make changes in your life, firstly you need to change your self-image, as you cannot succeed if your self-image is inconsistent to your positive desires. You need to totally believe you can do the things you ask of yourself. Decide what it is
you want to achieve and more importantly, ask yourself ‘why?’ Purpose is key. Truly act as if it’s impossible to fail. Focus on your end result. Many people often become entangled with the ‘how’ rather than the ‘what.’ The ‘how’ will look after itself whilst you stay focused on the outcome. The actual journey and progressive realisation of a worthy goal with purpose will bring about a sense of joy. Do not let negative opinions of others create your reality and prevent you from working towards your dream. They are not your opinions, do not own them, they do not belong to you. In order not to feel overwhelmed by goal setting, break down your goals into bite-size pieces, use each goal as a stepping stone in order reach your final destination. Do not waver from your initial goal. Do not be driven by your fears or your need to please others, instead, be driven by your desire to contribute, grow and expand. A goal is a dream with an embossed time stamp, so put a time limit on your goal and have a clear intention to succeed. No dream is too big so think big and challenge yourself. Expect and believe you will achieve it, don’t give up and take action towards reaching each small step. Remember, life does not give you what you want or need, it gives you what you deserve. Know that life can happen for you, not to you. You can design your life. See yourself as the person you want to be and start being that person today. The difference between achieving and failing is not giving up. This coming New Year, 2019, is your year, make it happen for you!
While there are new rules for British nationals applying for residency in Spain, there will be no change to the right and status of EU nationals living in the UK, nor UK nationals living in the EU, while the UK remains in the EU. As an EU citizen it is now mandatory to register as a resident if you intend on living in Spain for more than three months. New Mercedes CLA Coupe GERMAN car maker MercedesBenz has unveiled its new CLA Coupe, a car the company says is the most emotional vehicle in its class and highly intelligent. The company said the car comes equipped with features including augmented reality to aid with navigation and a voice commands feature. They come as part of an Intelligent Drive package which also includes features designed to improve aerodynamics and assist with driving. Ola Kallenius, responsible for research and development at Mercedes’ parent company Daimler,
said the car showed the company was going to the next level. “The CLA offers a great deal of automotive intelligence. By recognising gestures it facilitates natural operation,” Kallenius said. The CLA comes as a four-door coupe. Mercedes said the design was ‘seductive’ and that it represented ‘sensual purity.’ The car combines a long stretched entry line above the windows and frameless doors which give it a sporty and elegant look. The front section is striking and is raked forward like a shark while the long stretched bonnet
features powerdomes. Gordon Wagener, head of design at Daimler, said the car had the potential to become a modern design icon. “It impresses with its perfect proportions reflecting the first design sketch; a long stretched bonnet, a compact greenhouse, a wide
track with exposed wheel arches and our typical GT rear end with a strong distinctive ‘Coke-bottle shoulder,’” Wagener said. The car is powered by a fourcylinder petrol engine which delivers 225 horsepower. Its Intelli-

SEAT breaks records SPANISH car maker SEAT delivered 517,600 vehicles last year, 10.5 per cent more than in 2017 in what is the sixth straight year of growth for the firm. The amount of vehicles sold is the largest in the company’s history. Last year’s result broke the record set in 2000, of 514,800
vehicles delivered, according to SEAT’s own figures. Luca de Meo, president of SEAT, said the figure showed the company’s strategy and models were a success. “The positive financial results we have gained make us optimistic about facing the chal-
lenges posed by the sector. “SEAT aims to be a relevant player in the new era of the automotive industry,” de Meo said. SEAT said in a statement its new Arona SUV was the main driver of sales for the company. The company sold 98,900 Aronas in 2018, its first full year of sales. The Arona now stands alongside the Ibiza, Leon and Ateca as one of the four major pillars of the brand, SEAT said. The Leon remains the company’s bestselling model, with 158,300 units sold last year. A total of 136,100 Ibizas were sold while there were 78,200 units of the Ateca delivered. Wayne Griffiths, head of sales and marketing for SEAT, said 2018 was a historic year for the company. “We are one of the fastest growing brands in Europe, achieving the highest sales in our history thanks to double digit growth in major markets such as Germany, Britain and France,” Griffiths said. “In Spain, SEAT also increased sales by more than 10 per cent and we are the strong leader in the total market,” Griffiths added.

Olympics return hopes TRIATHLON athlete Javier Gomez Noya has said he hopes to compete in the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo. The five-time world champion recently competed in the Ironman tournament in Hawaii where he came 11th. Gomez said he did not want to go to the Olympics just to participate, indicating he will put his all into the 2020 games. “I have decided to return to the short distances and the world series to try to qualify for Tokyo. I want to see how I respond now to Olympic distances and if I look competitive I will look for classification in the Games,” he said. Gomez added he had made mistakes while competing at the Ironman in Hawaii’s A Kona. “It was a different year in 2018 and as you know it was not as I would have liked,” Gomez said. “I made a mistake and I paid dearly, I risked too much on the bike,” he added. Gomez said he planned to focus on short distances as part of his training. “After 15 years in the short distances I needed to refresh my mind. My body was asking
for a change. “The learning was very good. It helped me to know myself much better, to get out of my comfort zone. “It is more complicated than it seems. There are factors in the short distance that do not have relevance in long distances and competing with different rivals always motivates,” Gomez said.
