Final festive season magic THREE KINGS’ parades brought final festive season magic to towns and cities around the province. The provincial capital put on the most elaborate show on Saturday evening, bringing thousands of people into the city centre to enjoy the annual tradition marking the end of the Christmas holidays. Events began with the arrival of Melchior, Gaspar and Balthazar on camels from the Alcazaba fortification to the Plaza Vieja. “If anyone is missing a present it’s because we have given them out to children who don’t have anything,” Melchor told the crowd, while Gaspar explained he’d been “in charge of giving out gifts especially to anyone who has a disability.” Baltasar said the children

needed to work hard at school, telling them, “If you hadn’t studied I wouldn’t be here today.” The line-up of highly decorated floats, music and spectacular street entertainment was a mix of the most traditional with the more fantastical, themes including imaginary beasts and faraway worlds. City firefighters atop a classic fire engine brought up the rear of the procession, during which around 2.2 million gluten-free sweets were tossed into the crowds. In Mojacar the Three Kings’ parade was rather more modest, but the children lining the street from the village to the Multiple Uses Centre were no less excited to see to see the Three Wise Men and to gather up the sweets, soft toys and streamers their majesties gave

out. There were a few surprises in Mojacar this year. The Three Kings were joined by the Lady of the Blue Door figure from local folklore, the Goddess of Nature and the Goddess of Ice. Three winged angels representing the spirit of Christmas shimmied down the hill with characters like reindeer and gingerbread men, alongside elves and dancers. Finally the Three Kings gave out gifts to Mojacar children aged up to

11, assisted by Mayor Rosa Maria Cano and local councillors. In Albox this year’s event attracted huge crowds, and featured imaginative floats complete with princesses and Disney characters. As in Garrucha, one of the biggest on the Costa Almeria, families from all over the area packed the main roads, the scrabbles for the thousands of sweets the Three Kings launched as they went by distinctly competitive.

Total control AN Almeria court sentenced a man to a year in prison for physically and psychologically abusing his partner for 15 years, by putting a tracking device in her car and checking her mobile and clothing.

Children removed from squalor FOUR children are in the hands of social services after Guardia Civil officers found them living in squalid conditions with their mother in El Ejido. The farmhouse, in an area of greenhouses, had no electricity and was cold and damp. The flooring was just a layer of cement, broken up in places and covered in rubbish, including animal bones. The children, aged between two months and 10 years old, were dressed in old, dirty tshirts, and with not much on to keep them warm. The local council’s Social Services and Women’s Department first alerted Guardia Civil to the children’s circumstances at the end of December, requesting their urgent assistance in taking them to one of the centres for minors in Almeria City. Zurgena land-use plan ZURGENA Council has invited all residents of the municipality to an important meeting about the PGOU land-use plan. The meeting will be presided over by Zurgena mayor, Luis David Garcia, and will focus on explaining the recently agreed PGOU for the area. “All owners of property or land should find the meeting informative and helpful in understanding exactly their legal situation,” said Zurgena councillor Jim Simpson. “It is recommended that as many as possible attend to understand the outcome which the hard work of Zurgena Town Hall has achieved.” The meeting will be held at the Renfe Building in La Alfoquia at 6pm tomorrow (Friday).

Cruise stops THE first cruise ships to make a stop at Almeria port in 2019 will arrive in March. The biggest liner expected to make the provincial capital a port of call this year is the MS Riviera, which has capacity for more than 2,000 passengers and crew.

THE provincial council has approved 11 new rural road improvement projects in eight municipalities, adding up to a €1 million investment. Works will be carried out on 54 roads in total in Enix, Laujar de Andarax, Mojacar, Oria, Velez-Blanco, Berja, Huercal-Overa and Sorbas.

Drug clan NATIONAL POLICE uncovered a family clan growing marihuana and selling it, along with cocaine in the Pescaderia area of Almeria City. Searches of five properties led to the seizure of nearly 150 marihuana plants, 132 doses of cocaine, two rifles, a gun shooting blanks and nearly €4,000 in cash.

Wired up GUARDIA CIVIL arrested a man suspected of stealing wiring with an overall value of €1,800 from a farm in Roquetas de Mar. Officers acted on reports that he was one of three people seen in a vehicle loaded with rolls of wiring on the property access lane.

Museum visits THIS futuristic-looking modern art museum in the Basque Country had one of its best years for visitor numbers last year. Almost 1,265,760 people visited Bilbao’s Guggenheim Museum last year, the third highest in the gallery’s history according to its own figures. The figure comes behind that of 2017, the 20th anniversary of its opening, and its first full year of operation in 1998. The Guggenheim sits next to the

Nervion River and is one of the largest museums in Spain. It cost almost € 78.4 billion to build. It was designed by Canadian-American architect Frank Gehry and named after the businessman, art collector and philanthropist Solomon R Guggenheim. It houses modern and contemporary works from Spanish and international artists. The building is famous around the world for its design, with its unusual curves designed to appear random to re-

Population on the up THE provincial population stood at 709,340 at the beginning of the year, 2,668 more than at the start of 2018, representing a 0.38 per cent increase. The National Institute of Statistics figures showed Almeria experienced the second highest population growth among the eight Andalucian provinces last year. The number of inhabitants went up in nearly 40 Almerian municipalities in 2018. These included Partaloa, where total population increased by 7.58 per cent, going

from 975 to 1,055. In Nijar total residents jumped up by 1,126 people to 30,122, and in Roquetas de Mar by 1.562 to 94,925. At the same time, 64 municipalities in Almeria saw a drop in their populations. Most have less than 5,000 inhabitants, but there was also a decline in resident numbers in more populated municipalities, notably Carboneras, El Ejido, Macael, Olula del Rio, Velez Rubio and Mojacar.

Fugitive caught NATIONAL POLICE in Almeria arrested a 71-year-old woman wanted in France for financial wrong doings. Police discovered she was a fugitive from French justice while going through hotel and hostel guest lists, locating her in a city guesthouse. French authorities had been looking for the woman since July 2016, and had issued an International Arrest Warrant to bring her back to serve a seven-year prison sentence. Police reported her criminal ac-

tivities date back to 2012, when she was president and treasurer of an association in Perpignan. In 2013 she presented another woman to members, who became treasurer. Two years later, members reported the two for embezzlement, claiming they had disappeared when the association realised they had misappropriated a number of cheques, each for €2,500. Investigations revealed the two had got their hands on at least €80,000, and were in fact mother and daughter.

IDENTIFYING more than 1,700 fake items with a total value of around €500,000 was the result of 15 Guardia Civil inspections of the Roquetas de Mar market. Among the most common items seized were sportswear, handbags and trainers; in some cases labels where the logos of registered brands had been sown into sports shoes. The inspections also resulted in 14 arrests and investigations into three individuals for industry property offences. More than 50 Guardia officers took part in the inspections, supported by Social Security inspectors and industry experts, who certified whether items were fake or not. The inspections were part of the Guardia Civil programme of actions aimed at preventing robberies, frauds and trading in fake goods, which also includes information and training initiatives aimed at traders and consumers.

Renewable energy to meet water needs PROMOTING the production of desalinated water with renewable energy as a low environmental impact and sustainable means of meeting the province’s water supply needs. This is the aim of the 2020 Water and Energy Strategic Plan for Almeria backed by the Almeria Province Business Confederation (ASEMPAL) and the Almeria Provincial Council. The two institutions joined forces to promote what they describe as a pioneer project to make the most of solar and

wind power to create new sources of water. They want the study to be used as a tool by the regional and national governments for requesting European Union Integrated Territorial Investment (ITI) funding for Almeria, bringing an end to the problem of water deficits and contributing to the social and economic development of the provincial economy. Speaking at the official presentation of the project, outgoing provincial council President Gabriel Amat described water as

the ‘blood’ and ‘life’ of Almeria, commenting, “For us, agriculture is water, tourism is water, our province is water.” Amat also stated, “Institutions have to come together to develop matters of interest for the province, and water is a cornerstone for everyone. “We are always going to be in initiatives which bring more water to the province and doing so in a sustainable way using clean energy, which there is in such abundance in Almeria, such as wind and solar.”

Cat control KEEPING the feral cat colonies in the municipality under control is the main aim of an agreement between Huercal-Overa Council and the Nueva Vida Animal Protection Society. The council and the association have adopted the Trap-Neuter-Return programme as a means of guaranteeing the animals’ welfare and at the same time reducing the number of street cats. Nueva Vida volunteers will be responsible for feeding and controlling the cat colonies, while the council will provide official feeding areas and will meet the costs of the animal sterilisation and treatment. “We are looking to improve our residents’ lives and at the same time take care of the animals,” said Huercal-Overa Mayor Domingo Fernandez.

Fraud suspect GUARDIA CIVIL arrested a Vera woman on suspicion of setting up direct debit payments of nearly €3,000 for her mobile phone and insurance from a deceased man’s bank account. The detention of the 38-yearold woman came after the man’s brother reported he noticed direct debits for telephone and insurance which were not his sibling’s coming out of the account.

Budget priorities NIJAR Council has approved a €29 million municipal budget for 2019 which includes a significant programme of investment in infrastructure. The local authority has earmarked more than €7 million to plans including upgrading rural lanes, repairing and improving water and sewage pipes and road resurfacing. As Nijar has officially gained Prettiest Village in Spain status, this will mean

various improvements to public areas. Among other key features of the budget are a cycle track between Campohermoso and San Isidro, and the transfer and putting into operation of the new Guardia Civil station. Nijar mayor Esperanza Perez Felices said the €23 million debt inherited from the previous administration would be down to €6 million by the end of the current leg-

islature. She also highlighted the introduction of a Local Police drones unit, scheduled for the first fortnight of February. The unit will patrol the municipality from the air with the aim of preventing robberies from greenhouses and agricultural storage facilities, and will be able to pinpoint emergency situations in real time to improve co-ordination of the necessary response.

Festive fire service cheer THE Levante Almeriense firefighting team brought some festive cheer to children spending the Christmas holidays in the regional Inmaculada Hospital. The firefighters gave out gifts and took time to talk to the young patients, raising smiles on lots of little faces. They also thanked the hospital staff for their help and collaboration in making the visit possible. The Levante Almeriense Firefighters’ Consortium collaborates with a number of local ONGs and charitable associations throughout the year.

Budget green light ANTAS Council gave the green light to the municipality’s 2019 budget of nearly €4 million, 15 per cent up on last year. Mayor Isabel Belmonte said the budget would meet the needs of all areas of Antas and improve residents’ quality of life, drawing attention to the just short of €1 million allocated to projects including resurfacing lanes, a football ground wall, and new rain collection systems on roads to prevent water building up due to heavy downpours. Also planned are improvements to the road from Los Gallardos and new street lighting on the road between Antas and Aljariz. The mayor further highlighted the intention of putting out to tender the drafting of the General Urban Development Plan (PGOU), which will define the basis of urban growth in the municipality. She also pointed the improvement in the council’s financial situation, commenting that payments to suppliers are completely up-to-date.

Sell-out shows SHOESTRING PRODUCTIONS have another hit on their hands. The mildly eccentric, talented, hilarious and big-hearted bunch of thespians recently performed five sell-out shows of farcical comedy, The Ghosts of Hotel la Resistance, written and directed by local James DaleGrey. The cast had their audiences at MontMartre bar and restaurant in Mojacar in absolute stitches. As usual, proceeds were donated to the PAWS-PATAS animal shelter. The raffles raised €324 and the percentage of

ticket money added up to €550; a grand total of €874, which will go towards funds to renovate the shelter, especially the dog kennels after a recent storm which caused devastating damage. Anyone who didn’t manage to get a ticket in time for the shows will have another opportunity to catch a performance in June in a venue in the Parata area of Mojacar. Meanwhile, Jim’s grey cells are whirring into action and he already has plans for yet another Hotel la Resistance for spring 2020. Shoestring Productions also

Aiming for energy efficiency VERA Council has announced plans for modernising public street lighting along the coast to improve energy efficiency in the municipality. Over 1,100 existing lights will be replaced with LED technology, 240 new columns or supports will be put up, and a system for monitoring electrical parameters on each lighting control panel will be installed. The aim is to reduce electricity consumption by around 50 per cent, saving as much as €50,000 a year, and at the same time contributing to re-

modernised lighting will produce less light contamination. “We want to do our bit in

the sustainable development of the Levante area of Almeria, making Vera a reference point in the region,” commented Vera mayor Felix Lopez. The measures will be co-financed by the European Union through the European Regional Development Fund as part of the Andalucia 20172020 programme for sustainable energy development, which is managed by the Andalucia Energy Agency. The works are expected to take three months, with the total cost of the project at just over €700,000.

Gun factory shut down FOUR ‘traffickers’ who allegedly acquired parts of weapons and ‘cannibalised’ them for sale, have been arrested in Sevilla. The procedure involves using ‘fundamental parts of different firearms, which are subject to strict legal control in Spain,’ to create complete weapons. As part of Operation Armstrong, National Police officers seized two automatic sub-machine guns together with several specific pieces for rearming, an active calibre 5.56 bolt action rifle, an active 22 bit calibre rifle, two 22 calibre rifles, an active Glock short weapon, 14 Glock weapons, different ammunition of war of the calibre 5.56, more than 2,000 cartridges of the calibre 9mm as well as several other pieces; firing needles, silencers, and

Law changes to tackle child abuse THE statute of limitations for cases of physical or sexual abuse of children could be extended after a draft law was approved by the Spanish cabinet. Under current Spanish law, the limitations begin at 18, but if the proposed changes to the criminal code are upheld by parliament, they will come into action when a victim turns 30. For some time, campaigners have argued that it can take years for somebody to digest and report the abuse, meaning that in many

A HIGH speed water chase ended in the arrest of three suspected hashish smugglers on Malaga’s Sabinillas beach. The Guardia Civil used a helicopter to hover overhead and a speed boat to intercept the suspects who attempted to escape during the dramatic pursuit. The detainees, a Spaniard and two Moroccans, were arrested after

Tourist figures A STAGGERING 78.4 million holidaymakers visited Spain between January and November last year, with the majority travelling from the UK. Newly released figures released by National Institute of Statistics show that while tourist figures were up 0.7 per cent nationally compared to 2017, the number of British holidaymakers, 17.641 million, represented a 2 per cent fall on the previous year.

Spanish PM’s expat pledge SPAIN’S Prime Minister has said he told his British counterpart Theresa May that Madrid will guarantee that the rights of British expatriates living in Spain will be protected after Brexit. Pedro Sanchez added the passing of the current Withdrawal Agreement was in Spain’s interests. The Prime Minister said Spanish officials have begun working with the EU to prepare contingency plans for a no-deal Brexit. The government was also preparing a royal decree to give it powers to respond in the event of a no-deal scenario, Sanchez added. Separately, Britain’s ABTA travel agents association said British travellers would be able to fly between the country and the EU regardless of whether a deal is passed. If the deal passes, travellers will enjoy the same rights as they did under EU membership during the transition period due to end in 2020. The European Commission (EC) has also said flights between Britain and the bloc could go on as normal if no-deal is passed.

Deal vote looms By Joe Gerrard BRITISH government sources have confirmed that the postponed parliamentary vote on the Prime Minister’s Brexit deal will go ahead this Tuesday as doubts over MPs’ support continues. Many including hard-line Brexiteers in Theresa May’s Conservatives and the Northern Irish DUP, which props up the Prime Minister’s minority government, have ruled out supporting the current Withdrawal Agreement. May has sought to bolster support for the deal and said last week she was working to extract more concessions from Brussels. There have been some moves from the EU since December, she added. EU officials have repeatedly stated that the deal agreed at the last bloc council meeting is not up for renegotiation. May said the real danger lay in Brexit not happening at all. Brexit Minister Kwasi Kwarteng said he was ‘very hopeful’ that the deal would be voted through. Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn said

International Trade Secretary Liam Fox said the move was ‘irresponsible.’ If May loses, she will return to Brussels or resort to drastic alternatives after it was confirmed she could not stage repeat votes if defeated.

BRITAIN’S Environment Secretary Michael Gove has said that farms and food industries would be disrupted in the event of a no-deal Brexit due to additional customs checks, in a call for backing for the proposed Withdrawal Agreement.

Flag handout row By Joe Gerrard A LEFTIST party has accused a local branch of the conservative Partido Popular (PP) of divisive behaviour after it handed out thousands of Spanish flags in Granada City. Podemos’ Granada branch said the handout, organised for the anniversary of the conquest of the city from the Moors in 1492, was designed to sow hatred and xenophobia. The Granada PP said it was to commemorate an event of historical significance peacefully and out of respect for tradition. Around 4,000 flags were handed out on Tuesday, January 2. Podemos said on Twitter the move was a ‘textbook’ example of ‘dogwhistling.’ The term refers to the use of subtle language or gestures to appeal to nationalists, xenophobes and the farright. ‘In principle the idea sounds normal. But to certain ears it is equivalent to a message of rejection. The flag which would unite us is used to create division and confrontation,’ the party said. Sebestian Perez, a senior member of the Granada PP, said Podemos and other critics had ‘misinterpreted’ the gesture

Presidents’ top salary THE president of Cataluña’s Generalitat is the highest paid of Spain’s regional leaders, according to government data. Quim Torra is paid €146,925 a year for his role as Catalan President. Angel Garrido, the head of the Madrid region, is the second highest paid at €100,090 a year while Basque Country lendakari (leader) Iñigo Urkullu came third with €94,494. Valencia’s president Ximo Puig was the sixth highest paid at €78,536. Junta de Andalucia president Susana Diaz was the second lowest paid at €66,230 a year.

Population figures MORE than half of Spain’s provinces saw their populations fall in 2018, according to new data from Spain’s National Institute of Statistics (INE). The INE’s annual Municipal Register Review showed A Coruña lost 843 people, Albacete 1,246, Asturias 6,716, Avila 2,202, Badajoz 3,508, Burgos 1,101, Cantabria 66, Caceres 3,549 and Cadiz 721. Ciudad Real lost 3,478 people, Cordoba 2,979, Cuenca 1,496, Granada 863, Huesca 357, Jaen 5,385, Leon 4,570, Lugo 2,307, Ourense 2,387, Palencia 1,355, Pontevedra 959, Salamanca 2,130 and Segovia 842. Soria saw a decline of 303, Teruel 990, Valladolid 1,279 and Zamora 2,855. Madrid saw its population increase by 70,895, the highest rate of increase in Spain.

ON STRIKE: Security staff too are cold to work.

Frozen security staff AROUND 300 staff at one of Spain’s biggest airports have staged a month-long walk-out because it’s too cold to work. Employees with the company Eulen, based at Adolfo Suarez Madrid Barajas airport, claim they are not being provided with warm enough clothing during ‘extreme weather’ and won’t return to

work until January 21. The move spells travel chaos for British holidaymakers and coincides with three days strike action by Ryanair’s cabin crew across Spain which started on Tuesday, with further action planned for today and Sunday, over pay and working conditions. The strike at Madrid’s main

airport was called by union Alternativa Sindical and affects all security officers who patrol inside and outside the building, as well as the borders. Representatives claim Eulen is contravening ‘the law of prevention of occupational hazards’ by not offering adequate enough clothing for the winter months.

TWO teenage girls have been praised for saving the life of the father of one of the 13-year-olds after rescuing him from a fire at the family home in Guadalajara. The cause of the blaze is believed to have been a stove in the living room on the ground floor of the 52year-old’s home at Las Castillas urbanisation in Torrejon del Rey.

of the property and calling emergency services, ‘saved the man’s life’.

He was then taken to the University Hospital of Guadalajara, where he was stabilised and kept under

observation for smoke inhalation. The rescued man’s daughter was also treated at the scene for smoke inhalation. Guardia Civil, Azuqueca de Henares firefighters, an emergency doctor, a mobile ICU and a basic life support ambulance were involved in dealing with the emergency.

First gender-violence death of 2019 A WOMAN aged 26 has been killed in the first genderviolence death of 2019. Dog bites its owner A WOMAN needed treatment after one of her three ‘dogs of dangerous race’ turned on her while out walking. The 23-year-old was reportedly exercising the animals in Guadalajara, when they began to fight amongst themselves. It was while trying to separate them that one of them bit the woman’s hand. Emergency services were called and Guadalajara City Hall confirmed the female was taken to the University Hospital and discharged after being ‘treated for superficial injuries’.

DISMISSED: A bogus priest in Spain has been ordered back to Colombia.

Imposter kicked out of the Catholic Church A FAKE priest who was never ordained has been dismissed from the Catholic Church in Spain after 18 years carrying out weddings and taking confessions. Miguel Angel Ibarra was reportedly found to be an imposter after a complaint was filed in his native country of Colombia, alleging

that he had forged his documents. A ‘thorough investigation’ was carried out and it was found he had never been ordained. Ibarra, who moved to the town Medina-Sidonia last October, has since been ordered to return to Colombia. A spokesperson for the local diocese told British press

that events such as this could ‘overshadow the work of parishioners and ordained priests, who serve the church every day in an exemplary way.’ The Church confirmed weddings and baptisms will still be recognised, but not the communions or confessions which Ibarra heard.

Approximately 60 per cent of the establishments inspected were found to be showing televised La Liga matches without paying broadcasters the appropriate fee. The most common method was to use a ‘vitamised’ decoder which bypasses the security fea-

tures of TV broadcasters. The investigation began at the end of November 2018 when legal representatives of La Liga denounced the owners of various hostelries in different parts of Spain for alleged crimes against intellectual property. The Central Cybercrime Unit of the National Police coordinated the operation to check that ‘pirated’ broadcasts were not being used. Any ‘illegal’ decoders were disconnected and owners of the establishments summoned to a police station for a statement to be taken.

Divers rescued in heavy seas FIGHTING strong waves, members of the Guardia Civil, with the help of a privately owned boat, were able to save a diving instructor and two young Russians who became trapped in the sea and unable to make their way back to the shore. The divers and their instructor got into trouble in the Cova dels Arcs and the Cala del Moraig, in the Poble Nou de Benitachell. The water was allegedly rough when they began their dive and as they tried to get back to the beach, the strong waves started to throw them against the nearby rocks and made their escape impossible. Becoming increasingly exhausted they decided to make their way to the Playa Moraig, where a sunbather spotted their plight and called the emergency services. An investigation has been launched into whether the diving instructor has broken any law by allowing inexperienced divers to enter the sea when it was not safe to do so.

National Police have launched an investigation into the shootings, one of which took place near homes in the La Palmilla area of Malaga City at 1.45am on New Year’s Day. A third former policeman was also sentenced to 10 years in prison and fined €8.5 million after the group were found to have helped a drugs gang smuggle a ton and a half of hashish into Nerja. One man, a serving Guardia Civil officer from Algarrobo, received an eight-year prison sentence and was banned from the force for 15 years after he helped traffickers land safely in Spain, advising them to arrive

on the shore on days he was on duty. A municipal policeman from Nerja received the same sentence after renting a cortijo on the coast which the gang used to store the drugs before moving them on. A third former officer, who had been a member of the National Police, was tasked with keeping an eye on the section of coastal road where the drugs were due to land.

Fatal bridge crash THE first casualty of 2019 on M a l l o r c a ’s r o a d s w a s a 2 9 year-old Spanish man who died after his car collided with the pillar of a Genoa bridge. An investigation has been launched into how the crash occurred at 12.45pm last Friday night. When emergency services arrived at the location on the Ma-1044, they discovered the ‘totally deformed’ car under the bridge. Two ambulances, one basic and one equipped with advanced life support apparatus, attempted to save the life of the ‘very seriously injured’ driver, but he died at the scene. A Palma firefighter, who released the man’s lifeless body from the vehicle, told press the ‘accident was very violent as the car hit the column at very high speed.’ There were no witnesses to the crash and the Guardia Civil’s traffic department is working w i t h P a l m a ’s L o c a l P o l i c e t o determine the cause of the fatal crash.

Manufacturing growth slows

Minister on growth outlook SPAIN’S Economy Minster has said this coming year will be full of challenges as officials prepare to update predictions for 2019’s output. Nadia Calviño said economic output (GDP) would be difficult to predict due to uncertainties abroad including Brexit and the ongoing trade war between China and the US. Job creation data was very positive but Spain’s unemployment rate of 3,202,297 was still too high, the minister added in an interview with Spanish media. “We are seeing a moderation in economic growth but we are in a positive sit-

Calviño said ministry officials were still calculating 2018’s GDP growth but added current estimates placed it at 2.6 per cent. Growth in 2019 is predicted to be 2.3 per cent. Calviño did not say whether forecasters would revise the figure up or down in their update. The minister’s comments come as

concerns over a possible slowdown in growth continue. Data from Spain’s National Institute of Statistics (INE) found that the economy grew by 2.4 per cent year-on-year during the third quarter of 2018. The growth rate was one 10th less than the previous two quarters. It was also the lowest level of growth since 2014, when Spain began recovering from the eurozone debt crisis. Data showed the construction sector continued to drive economic output but that investment slowed during that quarter.

THE growth in output from Spanish factories slowed to its lowest rate of increase since mid-2016 last November and December, according to an industry index. The IHS Markit Factory Purchasing Index stood at 52.6 in November and 51.1 in December. Input prices slowed to their lowest rate of growth since September 2016 and output prices almost stood still, the index showed. The slowdown comes amidst concerns over the economy’s performance and a slowdown in the car making sector.

SPAIN and Portugal are better prepared than Italy to borrow from financial markets when the European Central Bank (ECB) stops buying government bonds as part of its Quantitative Easing (QE) programme, according to the Moody’s rating agency.

Asset sale INDEBTED: Cataluña’s Generalitat is the most indebted. CATALUÑA’S regional authority owes the Spanish treasury €57.5 billion, €4.5 billion more than a year ago and the highest debt of the country’s autonomous communities according to government data. Almost three quarters of the Catalan Generalitat was borrowed from the Spanish government’s Autonomous Liquidity Fund (ALF). The fund was created in July 2012 during the eurozone debt

crisis to help Spain’s Autonomous Communities plug gaps in their books without having to borrow from financial markets. Cataluña’s debts to the fund grew from more than €53 billion on September 30, 2017 to more than €57.5 billion a year later, according to the latest treasury data. The Generalitat has also announced plans to begin borrowing from the government’s Financial Facility Fund (FFF) and to cease borrowing from ALF.

Libereum’s buyout comes as part of moves from the firm and other blockchain companies to increase demand for cryptocurrency by investing in sports. The firm reportedly hopes to make its currency, the liber, part of the club’s financing system and offer it to

fans as a payment option. Cem Kumlar, founder of Libereum, said: “The purchase of Elche CF, a beautiful football club that shares our vision of a cryptocurrency future and is willing to actively communicate it to its supporters, is fantastic news.” It comes as investment platform Etoro struck deals with British clubs including Newcastle United and Tottenham Hotspur paid for with bitcoin corn (BTC).

Coal mine closures WORKERS in unprofitable coal mines hung up their hard hats for the last time at the start of this year as plans to shut down their pits came into effect. A total of 26 mines have shut down under the EU directive which required member states to close state subsidised mines making losses as part of the bloc’s wider environmental agenda. Grupo Lamelas Viloria, the owner of a Castilla y Leon mine which closed on Tuesday January 1, said it would fight against the closure. The firm has presented plans to dig for coal at nearby sites which it said could yield profits without the need for state aid. The previous government unveiled a €2.13 billion spending package to help soften the blow of the closures with the backing of Brussels in 2016 when plans were announced. The current left-leaning Partido Socialista (PSOE) government reached a deal with trade unions in October which included an offer of early retirement for workers. Officials have also earmarked €250 million to help repurpose disused mines. The €2.13 billion government

spending plan also includes measures to retrain miners so they can take jobs in Spain’s growing green energy sector. Any coal mine which failed to close before the end of 2018 had to return its share of the €2.13 billion. The EU has also announced punitive measures including fines for member states which failed to make mines close. Around 60 per cent of miners in the 26 closed pits are expected to opt for early retirement, according to government sources. Spain’s coal mining industry is largely based in the northern regions of Aragon, Asturias and Castilla y Leon. There were around 2,000 pit workers in Spain prior to the closure, down from roughly 100,000 in the 1950’s. Mines have been closing down since the middle of the last century due to the rising costs of getting coal out of the ground. Less than 10 per cent of Spain’s energy is sourced from coal. The country is aiming to have 20 per cent of its energy come from green sources by 2020 in line with EU targets. The current figure is 17 per cent.

Good start for index STOCKS on Spain’s index of its largest listed companies traded at the highest average level of any in Europe, according to market data. The IBEX 35 index closed at 8,550 points on the second trading day of this year. It fluctuated throughout that day and Wednesday January 2, dipping to 8,488.1 before recovering. The index’s results come as the Euro Stoxx, Germany’s DAX, France’s CAC and Italy’s MIB all closed with losses at the start of the year. London’s FTSE 100 stood at 6,703.38 points at midday on Wednesday January 3, down from its closing position of 6,733.97 on December 31. Gains from Telefonica and Santander of 0.2 per cent and 1 per cent respectively helped to drive positive results for the index. The IAG airline group also made gains of 1.5 per cent in the middle of the first trading week of the year.

This arrogant individual has not only managed to take a large chunk of lighthearted pleasure from the lives of Londoners by banning bikini ads, (Ed: from TFL premises) which previously brightened many a misty morning as residents of both sexes went about their daily affairs, but he has consistently stuck his oar into political matters by airing his views on Brexit at every opportunity. This latest escapade surely took the whole tin. As a confirmed remainer (we won’t go into his motives for that!) on New Year’s Eve he had the audacity to misuse lord knows how many thousands of taxpayers’ money, by turning the London eye into a gigantic EU flag! This huge fireworks display, not only cost a fortune, but was blatantly contrived to send a message of support from ‘remainers’ to the members of the European Union. Just how much of an undemocratic, utterly arrogant and totally unacceptable action was that? This man, who was undoubtedly elected by his peers, has also informed Londoners that they must be prepared to accept acts of crime and terror as part of the trials of living in a big city! Well I’ve got news for this distasteful little man. London didn’t used to be like that. Rather than

Almost unbelievably he said it was because they didn’t like the French police, who he said were rough and squirted them with pepper spray! Another couple, who were asked the same question, said they came to Britain because their nine-year-old daughter had insisted that she wanted to go to school here. You really couldn’t make it up. There’s only one way to handle illegal immigration; zero tolerance. No one, without exception, who enters Britain illegally should ever be allowed British residency or citizenship. Immediate incarceration and deportation should follow, preferably on large boats. Too dangerous by air. Rules should be simple and straightforward, thereby giving no chance for opportunistic lawyers to tie up individuals in the courts for years and rake in vast sums of taxpayers money in the process. Didi is a dark horse Richard Shanley DANCING ON ICE’S professional skater Dan Whiston has singled out Grease star Didi Conn as having the edge over her female counterparts in the competition, and could wow viewers with a ‘Debbie McGee moment’ on the ice. Three-time Dancing on Ice champion Whiston - who has been promoted to associate creative director for this year’s series - predicts the 67year-old actress will go far on the show, telling Digital Spy: “The girls are great this year. I think there's a bit of an undercut with Didi. “I think she may give us a Debbie

It’s a farce Mike Senker In my opinion Views of a Grumpy Old Man IT’S now a couple of weeks or so since the Gatwick airport debacle and it’s turned into a total farce. I will declare now that I have a personal interest in this as it was on December 20, the day that our daughter was flying from said airport to spend Christmas with us on a trip to Portugal. The thing I want to know is what happened? I mean, what the hell really happened? The whole place closed down because an overgrown toy was allegedly seen in the restricted airspace. Now, as I’m not totally stupid, if there was a drone buzzing about, they obviously had to close the airport until it was found and forcibly got rid of it. But they couldn’t find it, and as of now,

there are no official pictures of the said drone, and in fact, they are now saying that there may not have even been a drone at all! The UK police have zero, none, nada proof that there were any drones at all which led to over 1,000 flights being cancelled. Not to mention the couple who were arrested, named, and then freed because they had nothing to do with the non-existent drone and were charged with nothing; well how could they be if it never existed? I’m not a big conspiracy theorist, but there is something not quite right here. My phone can tell me where my car is parked when I can’t remember where I left it in the car park. Technology knows if I don’t have a TV licence and I’m watching EastEnders in my bungalow in East Cheam. If all that is possible, surely the might of the police and military should be able to get at worst case, a picture of this drone, and dare I suggest, find a way so this type of hoax never happens again.

Aretha Franklin OF all the artists we lost in 2018, possibly the most iconic was American singer, songwriter, pianist, actress and civil rights activist, Aretha Franklin. Born on March 25, 1942 in Memphis, Tennessee, Aretha Louise Franklin started her career as a child gospel singer at the church in Detroit where her father was minister. Aretha signed her first recording contract at 18, but success didn’t come straight away. It wasn’t until signing with Atlantic Records in 1966 that the hits began to flow. Tracks such as Respect, Chain of Fools, Think, (You Make Me Feel) Like A Natural Woman and Say A Little Prayer still fill the airwaves around the world more than 50 years later. By the end of the 1960’s Aretha had become known as the Queen of Soul.

The 1986 duet with George Michael, I Knew You Were Waiting was a massive worldwide hit and was just one of many duets that Aretha recorded in the 80’s. When Aretha Franklin died in August 2018 the world lost a unique voice. In these days of auto tuned talentless X-Factor fodder, Aretha will be greatly missed. The Queen of Soul will thankfully live on through her music.

slow down some of the ageing we experience caused by environmental factors, and could be particularly beneficial for those living in sunnier countries, including Spain. The benefits don’t stop there, however, as there is some evidence to suggest products using vitamin C can actually reverse some signs of ageing. Experts claim the chemical can help lighten dark spots, such as those left over after sun damage, as well as inhibiting melanin production - the chemical responsible for hyperpigmentation - preventing further dark spots from forming. Scientists also believe vitamin C may help to boost collagen levels in the skin, creating a plumper, firmer effect, and helping to reverse the look of fine lines and wrinkles. It is thought vitamin C achieves this by increasing cell turnover ensuring newer cells are always at the surface of the skin and sloughing away old ones, which may even help to fade scars.

There is a large variety of vitamin C skin care products available, and before choosing one, it is important to take some factors into consideration. The active chemical in most of these formulas, L-Ascorbic Acid, is unstable when exposed to sunlight, meaning your product may cease to be effective after several weeks if not stored properly. This means choosing a product ideally packaged in brown or blue glass, which helps to keep out UV rays and protect your product. Next, it is important to think about what concentration of LAA you would like to use. Higher concentrations of around 15 to 20 per cent are most effective but can cause sensitivity in some people, so it may be best to start off with a lower concentration, around 10 per cent. Finally, as ever, don’t forget to protect your skin by using a daily SPF of at least factor 30 to protect your skin from further damage.

The method of carb cycling is a concept which has been around for some time. For years after having my son I had still never found a way to return to a weight I was comfortable with, and this method has totally changed my attitude towards food. Carb cycling means you can still eat carbs, as long as you eat the right ones, and on certain days. You have low-carb days (max 50g) for five days a week and moderate to high carbs for two days. A spike of carbs triggers metabolism whereas other diets don’t keep your body guessing, and your body settles comfortably into its new routine. My typical breakfast would consist of

Sensitive skin WHILE many of us may normally have oily, normal, or dry skin, even the least skin-sensitive can suffer from red, easilyirritated skin during winter. Cold weather and central heating force can simultaneously over-stimulate and dry out skin, which in turn can act up. While it may not be necessary to buy a whole range of specialist products to deal with your newly-sensitive face and body, there are some simple substitutes you can make to help deal with the problem. First, it’s important to diagnose that sensitive skin is in fact what you are dealing with. This can present itself in the form of redness - or even rosacea - flaking, irritation, or bumps under the skin. Skin types which feel a burning or tingling sensation when using gentle products may also suffer from sensitivity. Next, you need to discount whether your sensitivity is caused by an allergic reaction. This could be the case if your skin changed suddenly, and could be caused by eczema, psoriasis, or another allergy,

and you should speak to a pharmacist or doctor who should be able to help. If your redness and irritation is something you normally deal with however, or suffer from every winter, you can lessen the symptoms and calm redness by taking extra care with your skin this season. Firstly, cut out any products which contain harsh chemicals. While your skin may be able to handle them at other points in the year, it will respond better to gentler formulas now. This includes your cleanser and toner, which should not contain alcohol or any foaming agents which will strip your skin’s natural protective layer. Instead, stick to a cold cream or balm formula which will soothe and protect your face, while removing dirt and oil. Depending on the severity of your sensitivity you may also choose to cut out your normal exfoliator completely. It is wise to stick to a gentler chemical exfolitant containing fruit acids, rather than using a harsher physical scrub. Next, hydrate, hydrate, hydrate.

REGARDING Leapy Lee’s reference to Henrietta Lacks, ‘she was a black American lady who died in the early 1950’s and is still alive today’?! When she was diagnosed with cancer of the cervix, tissue samples were taken (for researching her illness). At that time, cancer research was hampered by the fact that no matter how hard they tried, the other cultures died in a short time. Henrietta’s cell went to a medical research lab. After some time, it was noticed that her cells hadn’t died and were in fact reproducing. This was immediately realised to be a breakthrough for the researchers, no longer having a time limit imposed on their efforts. More samples were taken from Henrietta’s body, both before and after her death, without her or her family’s permission. Those cell cultures now known as Henrietta Lacks, were passed out to research establishments across the world and became a multi-million dollar business, and so many millions of people around the world are alive because of Henrietta. Here’s a couple of thoughts that the ‘intellectuals’ don’t seem to have thought of: a) Why not go back to using paper bags/carriers (a la Primark), using sustainable wood and which would be more easily recyclable. b) I remember seeing on TV a couple or so years ago a Japanese inventor who had come up with a table top machine that seemed to take all types of plastic (none of ‘the wrong sort’) and converted it back to oil. If this is feasible on a small scale, then why not produce some commercial size machinery that could be used by councils and other government agencies and get rid of the mountains of plastic and revert it to oil? SPAIN’S leading Bishop has hit out at ‘extremism’ which he claims is dividing the country. Archbishop of Toledo Braulio Rodriquez’s comments come as both sides on Cataluña’s independence debate continue to harden their rhetoric and after the far-right Vox of 12 seats in Andalucia. The Bishop’s remarks are also timely in light of news from Britain that pro-Brexit protesters called Conservative MP Anna Soubry a ‘Nazi’ and ‘scum’ while giving interviews outside Parliament. Soubry supports Britain remaining in the EU. Trends towards the use of divisive and insulting language in political discussions should disturb anyone who supports rational debate in democracies including Britain and Spain. The more such language is used, the more it becomes normalised within politics and wider society. And the more that happens the worse off a country and its citizenry becomes. Such language merely fuels cycles of hatred and resentment for those on the other side of an issue. It ultimately leads to both sides distrusting one another and those caught in the middle distrusting the political system itself, as Bishop Rodriquez pointed out. The only way to guard against this is to strive for respect and civility in political discourse. We are all entitled to express our views. But we should remember that if someone has an opposing opinion it does not make them ‘scum,’ merely different.

Attacks against the disabled rose significantly after Osborne’s hate speech at the party conference in 2012 declaring the disabled as scroungers, then attacks against French, German, Polish, Spanish living in the UK rose significantly after the referendum followed by the deplorable Windrush scandal of the deportation of British citizens, all in the name of appeasing the far right in the Tory party. We are fast becoming a fascist state, the Tories were found to be in contempt of parliament which was the first time ever in our history for this to happen. Leapy you might say minorities complain about being hard done by, but when most of the country finds itself in a minority group, we are being denied our human rights by a government that has no shame. DOUGHNUTS: Try using natural food colourings.

GOING shopping with my three-year-old grandson, can be a dangerous thing! Here at Olive Tree Farm, we try to eat healthily. When Logan saw the new doughnuts in Mercadona however, he almost exploded. I tried to fight him off, but he won, and I came home armed with a box of dangerous looking treats! This got me thinking about natural food colourings, so I did a bit of digging to see what could be used that wasn’t filled with E numbers.

The colours will not be as strong as manufactured ones, but the subtle shades using natural ingredients has to be much healthier. Here are a few things you probably have already which can be used … Pink: strawberries, raspberries Red: beets, tomato Orange: carrots, paprika, sweet potato Yellow: saffron, turmeric Green: matcha (powdered green tea leaves), spinach Blue: red cabbage + baking soda

Purple: blueberries, purple sweet potato Brown: coffee, tea, cocoa Black: activated charcoal, squid ink I have already tried the pink and the purple by using a blender. Simply blend the fruit to a pulp, and then reduce down in a saucepan to get a richer colour, pushing the fruit through a sieve at the end helps to remove any lumps. For the blue, you can shred cabbage, add it to a pan with some water, bring to a simmer and remove from the heat. Leave it to steep for 15 minutes, strain off the liquid into a smaller pan and reduce it down to a couple of tablespoons. At this point it is still purple, but add a pinch of baking soda to it and it magically turns blue. So next time you are baking and need coloured icing, give it a go and save yourself from the horrors of the unnatural!

SUSSEX Police recently admitted that its own drones launched to investigate the first sightings may have caused the ‘confusion’ at Gatwick which closed it for three days before Christmas, disrupting 1,000 flights and delaying 140,000 passengers. This, then, the latest embarrassment for the force which earlier admitted it was ‘possible’ there had been no drone at Gatwick at the time. Finally, the truth (possibly). Sounds like Sussex police’s Monty Python’s Flying Circus of total chaos and confusion meets April 1! (Maybe it was four pigeons in ra-ra skirts in formation - formation pigeon dancing? Or, like a few years ago, when a suspected drone at Gatwick turned out to be a plastic bag?) Police should have attached blue flashing lights to their drones going ‘Nee-naw, neenaw!’ so the public could tell which ones belonged to the good guys. Joking aside, police have the flight logs for their own drones. It should therefore take nothing more than some basic cross-referencing of those with the witness reports to determine which of the reported sightings were or could have been - the force’s own equipment, and in turn, which were suspect.

TECH FOR THE TIMID I RECENTLY endured one of those movies where the special effects work better - and harder - than the actors. But soon today’s action heroes won’t even have to pretend to do their stunts. Nor indeed will their stuntmen. Chinese TV recently aired a robot weatherman, hot on the heels of YouTube videos where the very latest lip-sync technology made it almost impossible to tell a computer-generated Obama from the real one (tip: nonhuman Artificial Intelligence actors don’t blink. Yet). We’ve long been familiar with animated movies, right back to Disney’s very first Snow White film which traumatised me against eating red apples for years. These days CGI (computer-generated imagery) special-effects films, are gaining a growing foothold, and the day can’t be far off when expensive - not to mention temperamental Hollywood actors themselves become surplus to requirements, just as plots did in the 70’s when helicopters

would do. Sadly, because computer-generated actors can perform and survive anything, a little bit of the magic will also go. The magic of suspending our credulity watching heroes being beaten to a pulp which would put the rest of us in Intensive Care with imminent last rites, yet managing to struggle up and carry on regardless. The magic of being asked to be-

lieve that fists on flesh resound with an explosive bang. Or face-slaps sound like the crack of doom. All with expensive hairstyles intact. The magic of having to accept actors picking locks in seconds which would take a trained locksmith and a vanload of unphotogenic equipment several hours. Or being asked to believe every hero has a built-in and infallible sense of direction: ‘Quick, head north!’

Pause to confirm direction SOME years back, whilst visiting a large retail park in Preston, we suddenly realised we’d lost our five-year-old daughter. Retracing our steps, we eventually found her, totally oblivious to the panic she’d caused, sitting on the floor, completely engrossed watching the ‘test-card,’ if you remember that, on a television. Then, as I remonstrated with her, a shop assistant pointed out the child had done nothing wrong, and it was we who were at fault in not having taken adequate care of her. A tough lesson, but very true and remarkably similar to a story, often read at this time of year, about Jesus, aged 12, remaining in Jerusalem as his parents set off on the fiveday journey back to their home in Nazareth. Only when he didn’t appear at their first overnight stop did Mary and Joseph realise the horror of the situation and in panic retraced their steps, spending the next three days searching for him in Jerusalem. Imagine their relief and annoyance when they eventually found him, sitting unconcerned in deep discussion with the religious

leaders in the Temple, questioning why it had taken them so long to deduce where he’d be. I’d guess, most of us see a precocious, or at best a thoughtless child in this incident, as we naturally sympathise with his parents, but this Jesus, we Christians believe, is God personified, incapable of doing wrong. So, as the shop assistant had so gently corrected us, it was the parents and not the child, who was wrong. Their task was to care for their son, whose vocation even at that age was to serve God, so needed to grasp the rare opportunity presented to him to learn from the leaders of his time. Yet his parents left him, oblivious to his needs, concerned only with their own agenda and business, without a second thought for his welfare until evening. What a lesson for us who claim to be Christians this New Year. How often we become engrossed in our own plans and ideas, forging ahead without any thought of Christ, until that is, things start to go wrong, and that’s when - like Mary and Joseph - we discover we’ve left him behind.

What woman will never have questioned why film heroines always manage to wake up looking like several million dollars, immaculately made-up and groomed? Don’t they use cold cream in Hollywood? Or hair curlers? Come to that, how come no-one on film ever does what we lesser mortals do: goes to the loo? Or actually eats the food on the table? CGI will also, finally, draw a curtain on physically having to stage the meticulously-choreographed ballet which is the staple of so many movies: the car chase. Doing it exclusively with computers will at least stop us having to believe that innocent bystanders, despite being scattered in every direction as the vehicles plunge through crowded markets or malls, are never, ever hurt. Try telling that to the Red Cross.

Switch off your brain MOVIE computing suspends belief for even the most feebly geeky among us. At a time when infants already knew the difference between Enter and the Backspace key, even a decade ago could we still be expected to believe in computer consoles which put huge letters on their screens; to the accompaniment of a beeping sound as each letter appeared? Or computers which never needed to be booted-up? Or nerds keying-in complex codes which would save/destroy the world while holding highly intelligible conversations at the same time? Perhaps we shouldn’t take it all too literally. Perhaps, as an ardent moviegoer suggested to me recently, these days before entering the cinema there is indeed something else you should switch off along with your mobile phone: your brain.

Small and perfectly formed by Joss Biggs MY culinary skills are best described as eccentric. Usually my meals taste OK, occasionally they are a disaster, like when I fancied a cup of chocolate. I fetched the cup and the spoon, measured the chocolate into the cup, added a drop of milk, mixed it, and then my mind wandered. I put the mix into the microwave and set it for a bit more than a minute. Cremated chocolate paste is not edible! Sometimes I surpass my own expectations, and produce a meal which tastes delicious. But the common factor to all my efforts is presentation. Yes, I present it, in so much as it is all on the plate, but order and visual appeal there is not! I work on the premise of why bother

to separate the ingredients into an aesthetically pleasing plateful when it’s all going to get mashed up inside you? In particular, I am hopeless at fried eggs. No matter how careful I am it always ends up looking as if it had been dropped onto the plate by a passing helicopter. Andy’s special talent is fried eggs. The yolk is in the middle of a uniformly round white, whereas mine looks more like something that has been used as a missile by Dennis the Menace, from the Beano. Andy’s secret is a very small frying pan. No room for splodge! So, I bought a very small frying pan, and now my fried eggs are little gems of symmetry. They are small and perfectly formed!

Rural employment plan in action THE Almeria Provincial Council delegate with special responsibility for the Rural Employment Development Plan has visited Oria to see first-hand progress on three projects generating 3,000 working days. Accompanied by Oria mayor Marcos Reche, Guillermo Casquet congratulated workers on their progress. The deputy said the plan is important for encouraging people not to move away from rural areas ‘and to favour the transformation and improvement of inland

municipal infrastructure.’ One project involves general improvements to municipal infrastructure and street surfaces. A second Environmental Maintenance project includes weeding, cleaning, pruning, irrigation, planting and painting in more than 50 locations. Back in the summer, improvements to the San Gregorio school were carried out, including updating the sports fields. The total budget for the three projects is around €300,000.

Power saving MACAEL is set to save around €79,000 a year on electricity thanks to a provincial government energy efficiency project. Nearly 1,400 conventional

street lights will be replaced with LED low consumption lighting. Works will also include incorporating new equipment on control panels, improve-

ments to 75 light support posts and improving cabling. Provincial Development Deputy Oscar Liria said these kinds of projects are ‘essential’ as they mean major savings on municipal electricity bills and important reductions in energy consumption. The project has a budget of nearly €900,000, and comes under an Institute for Energy Diversification and Conservation-European Regional Development Fund subsidies programme for the projects of local entities taking steps towards a local carbon economy.

By Dilip Kuner SPAIN is in the process of lowering the speed limit on secondary roads from 100kph to 90kph. The Council of Ministers has approved the measure, which is designed to cut the death toll from road accidents. At the moment 66 per cent of road fatalities occur on secondary roads, about half of which are due to cars leaving the road, usually due to excessive speed.

Spain reducing speed limits on secondary roads Spain joins other European countries which have lowered the speed limit on their secondary roads, in the case of France to 80kph. The Netherlands, Denmark, Ireland, Finland, Cyprus and Malta also have an 80kph limit while Swed e n ’s i s t h e l o w e s t a t 70kph.

There are four countries in Europe with a higher limit; the United Kingdom at 96kph (60 miles per hour), while Germany, Austria and Romania keep the maximum at 100kph. In these three countries,

the limit on motorways is a l s o h i g h e r t h a n S p a i n ’s 120kph limit, at 130kph. The lowering of the speed limit on Spanish secondary roads is part of the battery of measures of the Directorate General of Traf-

fic (DGT) for 2019. Fines for not wearing seat belts will also be tightened, and the use of other vehicles such as bicycles and scooters will be regulated. The reduction in the maxi m u m l i m i t w i l l a ff e c t around 7,000 kilometres of roads. Drivers of vans, lorries and buses which until now could reach a maximum of 90kph on these roads will have to keep to an 80kph limit. Trafico roads department is planning to make the new limit effective by the end of this month. It is in the process of adapting existing signs using stickers, as was done when speed was temporarily reduced on motorways to 110kph in 2011.

Porsche recalls Panamera PORSCHE is recalling its current generation of Panamera for a fix to an intermittent power steering fault. The control unit on the affected vehicles’ electric power steering is to be reprogrammed. There are 74,585 vehicles affected worldwide, produced between March 21,

2016 and December 6, 2018. A software error means there is a possibility that the electric power steering will occasionally be unavailable for a limited period. If this happens, increased force is then required for steering. To avoid this, the associated control unit needs to be reprogrammed with an

updated data record as a precautionary measure. Affected customers are being contacted in writing and asked to attend their Porsche Centre as soon as possible. The workshop visit will take around an hour, and is free of charge for customers.
