A husband and wife, both aged around 45, were reportedly left seriously injured a f t e r a l a rg e wh e e l flew off a lorry travelling in the opposite direction, before bouncing across the central r e se r v a t i o n a n d smashing into their car. Their two daughters, aged

four and nine, were left unharmed in the back of the v eh icle , b u t fire fig h te rs were forced to free the parents after they were left trapped in the wreckage. T h e h u s b a n d , w h o ha d been sitting in the front passenger seat, later went into cardiac arrest before health workers arrived, prompting drivers from nearby cars to intervene, performing CPR until paramedics arrived. The chief inspector of the Cheste Local Police, who

had been travelling just behind the c a r, inte rve ne d, helping the couple’s children to safety. Health workers later arrived, transferring the couple to the La Fe Hospital in Valencia, both in a serious condition. Paramedics said the help the man had received until ambulances arrived was vital in saving his life. The ma n w a s pla c e d in Intensive Care, while his wife reportedly also re-

ceived serious, but not lifethreatening, injuries. The driver of the lorry told police he stopped his vehicle as soon as he lost a w he e l, but w a s una ble to stop it bouncing along the road. Investigators from the Guardia Civil are now looking into how the lorry lost its wheel. The injured couple were re porte dly tra ve lling towards Alicante in a Seat Le on w he n the a c c ide nt took place.

Cops shopped TWO police officers were among 18 people found guilty of drug trafficking. A third former policeman was also sentenced to 10 years in prison after the group were found to have helped a drugs gang smuggle a ton and a half of hashish into Maro, Nerja. One serving Guardia Civil officer from Algarrobo received an eight-year prison

sentence and was banned from the force for 15 years after he helped traffickers land safely in Spain, advising them to arrive on the shore on days he was on duty. A municipal policeman from Nerja received the same sentence after also helping the gang, renting a cortijo on the coast which members used to store the drugs before moving them on.

A third officer, a former member of the National Police, was tasked with keeping an eye on the section of coastal road where the drugs were due to land. In addition to his prison sentence, which was higher as it was his second offence, the man was also fined €8.5 million and banned from ever returning to the police force.

BUDGET airline Ryanair has confirmed it has received the necessary licence to continue operating after Brexit. The company, which carries the highest volume of passengers at Malaga Airport, has been issued with an Air Operator Certificate (COA), allowing it to continue flying within the UK and outside the EU. Ryanair explained it is still pushing the UK government and EU to agree to a transition period following the March 29 exit date, to avoid any disruption. In the first 11 months of 2018, Ryanair carried 4.2 million customers at Malaga Airport.

Burglars reportedly used ladders to access the building before removing the safes, which contained the takings from the previous few days, and which were later found empty nearby. Police claim the thieves struck in the early hours of Sunday morning, during the Three Kings celebrations, making off with between €45,000 and €50,000. Officers believe the suspects took advantage of steps outside the tourist attraction’s administrative building, where they were able to lean a ladder up against the building and break in through a window with no

Museum visits THIS futuristic-looking modern art museum in the Basque Country had one of its best years for visitor numbers last year. Almost 1,265,760 people visited Bilbao’s Guggenheim Museum last year, the third highest in the gallery’s history according to its own figures. The figure comes behind that of 2017, the 20th anniversary of its opening, and its first full year of operation in 1998. The Guggenheim sits next to the

Nervion River and is one of the largest museums in Spain. It cost almost € 78.4 billion to build. It was designed by Canadian-American architect Frank Gehry and named after the businessman, art collector and philanthropist Solomon R Guggenheim. It houses modern and contemporary works from Spanish and international artists. The building is famous around the world for its design, with its unusual curves designed to appear random to re-

€1.2m investment ALMACHAR Council has announced it will allocate almost half of its 2019 budget to investments. Around 41 per cent of the council’s €2.7 million funds, a total of €1.2 million, will go towards improving the area. Of this figure, €440,000 will be spent on infrastructure on Calles Cerro, Sol, and Fatima. A further €326,792 will go towards paving the Los Negritos to Cortijo el Pera rural road, while €45,000 will be used to

fund pedestrian access to the new cemetery, and €128,000 to reform Calle Polideportivo and other urban areas. Other infrastructure to be improved, includes €20,000 for improving the water supply network, and €8,000 to change the bulbs in the town’s municipal buildings to LED alternatives. Politicians said they planned to find further funding in future to build the Ethnographic Museum of the Axarquia Grape, as well as a recycling station.

A 34-year-old and 39year-old were remanded in custody awaiting trial after officers from the National Police searched the car and allegedly found two guns, and €11,000 in cash. Heavy metal NERJA Council is demanding a company remove its ‘abandoned’ machinery from a beauty spot in a national park. Politicians have called on Orlando SL to remove a series of heavy industrial vehicles from the Los Colmenarejos ravine in the Sierras Tejeda, Almijara and Alhama natural park. The machinery was allegedly abandoned after the council forced the closure of a quarry there when it designated the area a natural park. The company’s owner, Orlando Rodriguez, told one publication he was waiting for the council to agree further details before he removed the machines. He told Sur: “The economic value for scrap is barely €30,000 or €40,000, and the person responsible for securing its removal costs me €7,000 a month.” The council demanded Rodriguez remove the machinery ‘as soon as possible.’

The men were charged with drug trafficking and illegal possession of weapons and were ordered into prison.

Sewage plant almost complete WORKS to Nerja’s heavily delayed sewage treatment plant are nearly complete. Medical emergency DOCTORS in Malaga Province have been protesting over a lack of specialists needed to treat patients. Health care workers are criticising the Andalucian Health Service (SAS) over a lack of paediatricians, anaesthesiologists, and traumatologists in Malaga, accusing the SAS of implementing a, ‘bad labour policy.’ Figures claim only 10 per cent of retiring doctors’ positions are being filled by new talent. The president of the Malaga Medical Association, Juan Jose Sanchez Luque, explained: “Since 2007 we have been warning that there were going to be missing doctors,” adding many Malaga doctors had chosen to go into private health care after Spain’s financial crisis. He added: “There are family doctors who prefer to work in the emergency rooms of a private hospital than to do it in a health centre in Malaga due to the poor primary care situation.” The professional added he believed the public sector would only begin attracting doctors by offering more stable contracts and improved working conditions.

The force’s 30 officers also brought a total of 158 people to justice, seven for burglary, 11 for domestic abuse, and one British man who used a false identity to hide a criminal record for child pornography. POPULATION figures in Malaga Province continue to grow, with one of the biggest increases found in Velez-Malaga. The figures buck the trend in the rest of Spain, where population numbers have decline in more than half of the country. The number of people in Malaga Province increased by 10,506 in 2017 to 2018 to 1,641,121 inhabitants, compared to 1,630,516 the year before. Larger municipalities saw an average population growth of around 500 people, while only Benalmadena saw a decrease.

The figures make Malaga the province with the sixth highest levels of growth in Spain, after Madrid, Barcelona, Alicante, and the islands. In the province, Malaga City saw the highest levels of growth, gaining a further 2,024 people, while Velez-Malaga was not far behind, with an increase of 939. Nerja trailed further behind, however, with an increase of just 14 inhabitants. A total of 26 Spanish provinces lost population, bringing Spain’s population to 46,722,980.

THE sale of 30 plots of land in Torre del Mar, Benajarafe, and El Trapiche is expected to raise millions of Euros for local projects. Politicians at Velez-Malaga Council claim they have already received 13 offers to buy up a series of valuable sites throughout the municipality, despite attempts to sell the land last year raising just €410,050. Now, the council claims a change in the sales procedure will improve their chances this time. They will reportedly sell off the remaining 31 plots using a ‘direct award’ process, giving developers a

chance to use the plots for either residential or industrial purposes. The plots, which range from 100 to 7,000 squaremetres, are priced at between €13,000 and €700,000. Under the original initiative, councillors planned to raise funds selling valuable plots in Velez-Malaga, Torre del Mar, Chilches, Benajarafe, Lagos and Trapiche, totalling more than 27,600square metres. The council says it plans to use the money to fund ‘emblematic’ projects, including a new theatre in Torre del Mar.

Investigation into police ONE union has demanded an inquiry into the selection process used to hire members of the Local Police in Rincon de la Victoria. The CC OO labour union has added its name to a list of political groups demanding answers over a recent statement made by Local Police chief Francisco Casanova. The organisation is calling on members of the Partido Popular (PA) and Partido Andalucista (PA), who rule Rincon de la Victoria Council in coalition, to agree to a meeting to discuss the issue. The controversy began in October after the head of the Local Police, Francisco Casanova, allegedly ‘made veiled references to alliances within different Local Police selection processes and criticised a lack of qualifications,’ according to the group. They claim Casanova’s statements were, ‘intolerable’ and are demanding an investigation into the hiring procedures since 2002. The council dismissed the claims, however, saying the processes have been ‘clean, using high-ranking professionals from the Local and National Police’ adding, ‘if they have legal doubts go to court.’

The meeting, called by the opposition Partido Popular (PP), was used as an opportunity to question the council’s handling of the reopening of the tram. The PP accused Mayor Antonio Moreno Ferrer of a l a c k o f t r a n s p a r e n c y,

which he denied, instead accusing the PP of hindering ‘the management of the council instead of cooperating in order to move projects forward.’ He also accused the party of filing multiple motions to slow down the political process. L a s t D e c e m b e r, t h e P P demanded the council take into account recommendations by the Court of Auditors and comply with ‘rigorous’ technical and

economic reports before reopening the tram line. The PP also criticised the council for failing to reach an agreement with the Junta de Andalucia to subsidise 40 per cent of the works, as announced more than eight months ago. The party claims the amount would be insufficient in any case, arguing Jaen’s tram system is subsidised by 70 per cent, by the Junta de Andalucia.

Law changes to tackle child abuse THE statute of limitations for cases of physical or sexual abuse of children could be extended after a draft law was approved by the Spanish cabinet. Under current Spanish law, the limitations begin at 18, but if the proposed changes to the criminal code are upheld by parliament, they will come into action when a victim turns 30. Presidents’ top salary THE president of Cataluña’s Generalitat is the highest paid of Spain’s regional leaders, according to government data. Quim Torra is paid €146,925 a year for his role as Catalan President. Angel Garrido, the head of the Madrid region, is the second highest paid at €100,090 a year while Basque Country lendakari (leader) Iñigo Urkullu came third with €94,494. Valencia’s president Ximo Puig was the sixth highest paid at €78,536. Murcia’s president Fernando Lopez Miras takes home €68,257 a year, while Balearic Islands leader Francina Armengol earns €66,240 a year. Flag handout row By Joe Gerrard A LEFTIST party has accused a local branch of the conservative Partido Popular (PP) of divisive behaviour after it handed out thousands of Spanish flags in Granada City. Podemos’ Granada branch said the handout, organised for the anniversary of the conquest of the city from the Moors in 1492, was designed to sow hatred and xenophobia. The Granada PP said it was to commemorate an event of historical significance peacefully and out of respect for tradition. Around 4,000 flags were handed out on Tuesday, January 2. Podemos said on Twitter the move was a ‘textbook’ example of ‘dogwhistling.’ The term refers to the use of subtle language or gestures to appeal to nationalists, xenophobes and the far-right. ‘In principle the idea sounds normal. Population figures MORE than half of Spain’s provinces saw their populations fall in 2018, according to new data from Spain’s National Institute of Statistics (INE). The INE’s annual Municipal Register Review showed A Coruña lost 843 people, Albacete 1,246, Asturias 6,716, Avila 2,202, Badajoz 3,508, Burgos 1,101, Cantabria 66, Caceres 3,549 and Cadiz 721. Ciudad Real lost 3,478 people, Cordoba 2,979, Cuenca 1,496, Granada 863, Huesca 357, Jaen 5,385, Leon 4,570, Lugo 2,307, Ourense 2,387, Palencia 1,355, Pontevedra 959, Salamanca 2,130 and Segovia 842. Soria saw a decline of 303, Teruel 990, Valladolid 1,279 and Zamora 2,855. Madrid saw its population increase by 70,895, the highest rate of increase in Spain.

By Joe Gerrard BRITISH government sources have confirmed that the postponed parliamentary vote on the Prime Minister’s Brexit deal will go ahead this Tuesday as doubts over MPs’ support continues. Many including hard-line Brexiteers in Theresa May’s Conservatives and the Northern Irish DUP, which props up the Prime Minister’s minority government, have ruled out supporting the current Withdrawal Agreement. May has sought to bolster support for the deal and said last week she was working to extract more concessions from Brussels. There have been some moves from the EU since December, she added. EU officials have repeatedly stated that the deal agreed at the last bloc council meeting is not up for renegotiation. May said the real danger lay in Brexit not happening at all. SPAIN’S Prime Minister has said he told his British counterpart Theresa May that Madrid will guarantee that the rights of British expatriates living in Spain will be protected after Brexit. Pedro Sanchez added the passing of the current Withdrawal Agreement was in Spain’s interests. The Prime Minister said Spanish officials have begun working with the EU to prepare contingency plans for a no-deal Brexit. The government was also preparing a royal decree to give it powers to respond in the event of a no-deal scenario, Sanchez added. Separately, Britain’s ABTA travel agents association said British travellers would be able to fly between the country and the EU regardless of whether a deal is passed. If the deal passes, travellers will enjoy the same rights as they did under EU membership during the transition period due to end in 2020. The European Commission (EC) has also said flights between Britain and the bloc could go on as normal if no-deal is passed.

Affordable energy concerns ELECTRICITY prices in Spain are among the highest in Europe, and the Ombudsman has expressed concerns about the ‘continuous’ hikes which affect ‘people in a situation of greater vulnerability’. In his annual report, Francisco Fernandez Marugan said the largest number of complaints in 2018 related to economic and social issues, and said ‘energy poverty’ remains a ‘worrisome problem’. He reiterated the need to safeguard consumers, particularly the most vulnerable, in light of the ‘continuous and recent rises in the price of electricity, one of the highest in Europe.’ Marugan pointed out that electric power is a basic necessity and essential in the provision of other fundamental rights such as education, health or decent housing. For these reasons, the Ombudsman considers it necessary that ‘the regulation of the electric sector sets the objective of achieving a more affordable energy.’ He asked that the formula used to determine energy prices ‘be clarified with a version which is understandable to the public.’

RED CARD: Bars in trouble for illegally screening matches.

La Liga bar raids By Dilip Kuner NATIONAL POLICE have raided more than 2,000 bars, cafes and restaurants in a clampdown on the illegal showing of Spanish football matches. Approximately 60 per cent of the establishments inspected were found to be showing televised La Liga matches without paying broadcasters the appropriate fee. The most common method was to use a ‘vitamised’ decoder which bypasses the security fea-

tures of TV broadcasters. The investigation began at the end of November 2018 when legal representatives of La Liga denounced the owners of various hostelries in different parts of Spain for alleged crimes against intellectual property. The Central Cybercrime Unit of the National Police coordinated the operation to check that ‘pirated’ broadcasts were not being used. Any ‘illegal’ decoders were disconnected and owners of the establishments summoned to a police station for a statement to be taken.

PEDRO SANCHEZ, president of the Spanish government, sent a message of calm to the 300,000 Britons living in Spain. Spain has Europe’s largest community of expatriates, and they are the biggest users of Spain’s state-funded health system amongst foreign residents. Sanchez reassured them the government was working on measures to ensure British expatriates would maintain their current rights even if the UK crashes out of Europe with a hard Brexit and no-deal. The measures were nevertheless conditioned on Spanish nationals obtaining the same rights in Britain, he added.

Tourist figures A STAGGERING 78.4 million holidaymakers visited Spain between January and November last year, with the majority travelling from the UK. Newly released figures released by National Institute of Statistics show that while tourist figures were up 0.7 per cent nationally compared to 2017, the number of British holidaymakers, 17.641 million, represented a 2 per cent fall on the previous year.

Imposter kicked out of the Catholic Church A FAKE priest who was never ordained has been dismissed from the Catholic Church in Spain after 18 years carrying out weddings and taking confessions. Miguel Angel Ibarra was reportedly found to be an imposter after a complaint was filed in his native country of Colombia, alleging

that he had forged his documents. A ‘thorough investigation’ was carried out and it was found he had never been ordained. Ibarra, who moved to the town Medina-Sidonia last October, has since been ordered to return to Colombia. A spokesperson for the local diocese told British press

that events such as this could ‘overshadow the work of parishioners and ordained priests, who serve the church every day in an exemplary way.’ The Church confirmed weddings and baptisms will still be recognised, but not the communions or confessions which Ibarra heard.

Manufacturing growth slows

Minister on growth outlook SPAIN’S Economy Minster has said this coming year will be full of challenges as officials prepare to update predictions for 2019’s output. Nadia Calviño said economic output (GDP) would be difficult to predict due to uncertainties abroad including Brexit and the ongoing trade war between China and the US. Job creation data was very positive but Spain’s unemployment rate of 3,202,297 was still too high, the minister added in an interview with Spanish media. “We are seeing a moderation in economic growth but we are in a positive sit-

Calviño said ministry officials were still calculating 2018’s GDP growth but added current estimates placed it at 2.6 per cent. Growth in 2019 is predicted to be 2.3 per cent. Calviño did not say whether forecasters would revise the figure up or down in their update. The minister’s comments come as

concerns over a possible slowdown in growth continue. Data from Spain’s National Institute of Statistics (INE) found that the economy grew by 2.4 per cent year-on-year during the third quarter of 2018. The growth rate was one 10th less than the previous two quarters. It was also the lowest level of growth since 2014, when Spain began recovering from the eurozone debt crisis. Data showed the construction sector continued to drive economic output but that investment slowed during that quarter.

THE growth in output from Spanish factories slowed to its lowest rate of increase since mid-2016 last November and December, according to an industry index. The IHS Markit Factory Purchasing Index stood at 52.6 in November and 51.1 in December. Input prices slowed to their lowest rate of growth since September 2016 and output prices almost stood still, the index showed. The slowdown comes amidst concerns over the economy’s performance and a slowdown in the car making sector.

SPAIN and Portugal are better prepared than Italy to borrow from financial markets when the European Central Bank (ECB) stops buying government bonds as part of its Quantitative Easing (QE) programme, according to the Moody’s rating agency.

Asset sale INDEBTED: Cataluña’s Generalitat is the most indebted. CATALUÑA’S regional authority owes the Spanish treasury €57.5 billion, €4.5 billion more than a year ago and the highest debt of the country’s autonomous communities according to government data. Almost three quarters of the Catalan Generalitat was borrowed from the Spanish government’s Autonomous Liquidity Fund (ALF). The fund was created in July 2012 during the eurozone debt

crisis to help Spain’s Autonomous Communities plug gaps in their books without having to borrow from financial markets. Cataluña’s debts to the fund grew from more than €53 billion on September 30, 2017 to more than €57.5 billion a year later, according to the latest treasury data. The Generalitat has also announced plans to begin borrowing from the government’s Financial Facility Fund (FFF) and to cease borrowing from ALF.

Blockchain club buyout A DUTCH cryptocurrency company has placed a down payment of €4.3 million on the Elche CF football club, according to its founder. Libereum’s buyout comes as part of moves from the firm and other blockchain companies to increase demand for cryptocurrency by investing in sports. The firm reportedly hopes to make its currency, the liber, part of the club’s financing system and offer it to

fans as a payment option. Cem Kumlar, founder of Libereum, said: “The purchase of Elche CF, a beautiful football club that shares our vision of a cryptocurrency future and is willing to actively communicate it to its supporters, is fantastic news.” It comes as investment platform Etoro struck deals with British clubs including Newcastle United and Tottenham Hotspur paid for with bitcoin corn (BTC).

Coal mine closures WORKERS in unprofitable coal mines hung up their hard hats for the last time at the start of this year as plans to shut down their pits came into effect. A total of 26 mines have shut down under the EU directive which required member states to close state subsidised mines making losses as part of the bloc’s wider environmental agenda. Grupo Lamelas Viloria, the owner of a Castilla y Leon mine which closed on Tuesday January 1, said it would fight against the closure. The firm has presented plans to dig for coal at nearby sites which it said could yield profits without the need for state aid. The previous government unveiled a €2.13 billion spending package to help soften the blow of the closures with the backing of Brussels in 2016 when plans were announced. The current left-leaning Partido Socialista (PSOE) government reached a deal with trade unions in October which included an offer of early retirement for workers. Officials have also earmarked €250 million to help repurpose disused mines. The €2.13 billion government

spending plan also includes measures to retrain miners so they can take jobs in Spain’s growing green energy sector. Any coal mine which failed to close before the end of 2018 had to return its share of the €2.13 billion. The EU has also announced punitive measures including fines for member states which failed to make mines close. Around 60 per cent of miners in the 26 closed pits are expected to opt for early retirement, according to government sources. Spain’s coal mining industry is largely based in the northern regions of Aragon, Asturias and Castilla y Leon. There were around 2,000 pit workers in Spain prior to the closure, down from roughly 100,000 in the 1950’s. Mines have been closing down since the middle of the last century due to the rising costs of getting coal out of the ground. Less than 10 per cent of Spain’s energy is sourced from coal. The country is aiming to have 20 per cent of its energy come from green sources by 2020 in line with EU targets. The current figure is 17 per cent.

Good start for index STOCKS on Spain’s index of its largest listed companies traded at the highest average level of any in Europe, according to market data. The IBEX 35 index closed at 8,550 points on the second trading day of this year. It fluctuated throughout that day and Wednesday January 2, dipping to 8,488.1 before recovering. The index’s results come as the Euro Stoxx, Germany’s DAX, France’s CAC and Italy’s MIB all closed with losses at the start of the year. London’s FTSE 100 stood at 6,703.38 points at midday on Wednesday January 3, down from its closing position of 6,733.97 on December 31. Gains from Telefonica and Santander of 0.2 per cent and 1 per cent respectively helped to drive positive results for the index. The IAG airline group also made gains of 1.5 per cent in the middle of the first trading week of the year.

Where the true problems lie

LEAPY LEE SAYS IT OTHERS THINK IT WHAT a jumped up little pipsqueak this present mayor of London has turned out to be. This arrogant individual has not only managed to take a large chunk of lighthearted pleasure from the lives of Londoners by banning bikini ads, (Ed: from TFL premises) which previously brightened many a misty morning as residents of both sexes went about their daily affairs, but he has consistently stuck his oar into political matters by airing his views on Brexit at every opportunity. This latest escapade surely took the whole tin. As a confirmed remainer (we won’t go into his motives for that!) on New Year’s Eve he had the audacity to misuse lord knows how many thousands of taxpayers’ money, by turning the London eye into a gigantic EU flag! This huge fireworks display, not only cost a fortune, but was blatantly contrived to send a message of support from ‘remainers’ to the members of the European Union. Just how much of an undemocratic, utterly arrogant and totally unacceptable action was that? This man, who was undoubtedly elected by his peers, has also informed Londoners that they must be prepared to accept acts of crime and terror as part of the trials of living in a big city! Well I’ve got news for this distasteful little man. London didn’t used to be like that. Rather than

Almost unbelievably he said it was because they didn’t like the French police, who he said were rough and squirted them with pepper spray! Another couple, who were asked the same question, said they came to Britain because their nine-year-old daughter had insisted that she wanted to go to school here. You really couldn’t make it up. There’s only one way to handle illegal immigration; zero tolerance. No one, without exception, who enters Britain illegally should ever be allowed British residency or citizenship. Immediate incarceration and deportation should follow, preferably on large boats. Too dangerous by air. Rules should be simple and straightforward, thereby giving no chance for opportunistic lawyers to tie up individuals in the courts for years and rake in vast sums of taxpayers money in the process. TECH FOR THE TIMID I RECENTLY endured one of those movies where the special effects work better - and harder - than the actors. But soon today’s action heroes won’t even have to pretend to do their stunts. Nor indeed will their stuntmen. Chinese TV recently aired a robot weatherman, hot on the heels of YouTube videos where the very latest lip-sync technology made it almost impossible to tell a computer-generated Obama from the real one (tip: nonhuman Artificial Intelligence actors don’t blink. Yet). We’ve long been familiar with animated movies, right back to Disney’s very first Snow White film which traumatised me against eating red apples for years. These days CGI (computer-generated imagery) special-effects films, are gaining a growing foothold, and the day can’t be far off when expensive - not to mention temperamental Hollywood actors themselves become surplus to requirements, just as plots did in the 70’s when helicopters

would do. Sadly, because computer-generated actors can perform and survive anything, a little bit of the magic will also go. The magic of suspending our credulity watching heroes being beaten to a pulp which would put the rest of us in Intensive Care with imminent last rites, yet managing to struggle up and carry on regardless. The magic of being asked to be-

lieve that fists on flesh resound with an explosive bang. Or face-slaps sound like the crack of doom. All with expensive hairstyles intact. The magic of having to accept actors picking locks in seconds which would take a trained locksmith and a vanload of unphotogenic equipment several hours. Or being asked to believe every hero has a built-in and infallible sense of direction: ‘Quick, head north!’

What woman will never have questioned why film heroines always manage to wake up looking like several million dollars, immaculately made-up and groomed? Don’t they use cold cream in Hollywood? Or hair curlers? Come to that, how come no-one on film ever does what we lesser mortals do: goes to the loo? Or actually eats the food on the table? CGI will also, finally, draw a curtain on physically having to stage the meticulously-choreographed ballet which is the staple of so many movies: the car chase. Doing it exclusively with computers will at least stop us having to believe that innocent bystanders, despite being scattered in every direction as the vehicles plunge through crowded markets or malls, are never, ever hurt. Try telling that to the Red Cross.

Switch off your brain MOVIE computing suspends belief for even the most feebly geeky among us. At a time when infants already knew the difference between Enter and the Backspace key, even a decade ago could we still be expected to believe in computer consoles which put huge letters on their screens; to the accompaniment of a beeping sound as each letter appeared? Or computers which never needed to be booted-up? Or nerds keying-in complex codes which would save/destroy the world while holding highly intelligible conversations at the same time? Perhaps we shouldn’t take it all too literally. Perhaps, as an ardent moviegoer suggested to me recently, these days before entering the cinema there is indeed something else you should switch off along with your mobile phone: your brain.

Just like Swipe I AM constantly bewildered by the television commercials promoting certain brands of liquors which I have often never heard of. Bearing in mind the cost of TV advertising campaigns, it puzzles me how they are paid for, because in all my years of socialising and experience of bars and restaurants, I have never once heard anyone order these concoctions. You will see them on the top shelf behind the bar, and judging by the contents they are obviously barely used. Which is of course why they are placed out of the way on the top shelf. So who actually buys this stuff? These television ads increase in intensity around the Christmas and New Year period for obvious reasons, and I can only surmise that having been tempted by the blurb, people go out and buy a bottle to give it a try, and then having done so decide that it’s not to their liking and tip the rest down the toilet. Or perhaps having thrown a party and found that nobody touched

Colin Bird the stuff, it’s bunged in a cupboard and there it remains indefinitely. I personally have one or two of these alien bottles which people have brought to our parties, but who have then ignored them and proceeded to dispatch my wine unashamedly. There is one efficient way to rid yourself of this unwanted liquor, and you only have to look at the prizes in a charity raffle to know where that is. But that’s simply redistribution, because then some other poor devil is lumbered until the next raffle. There is an oblique parallel here with the pyramid selling phenomenon in the 1960’s and in particular a cleaning product called Swipe. You bought into the business by purchasing at least a case of the product which then enabled you to

advance by recruiting others in the same way. This would mean that you not only made the profit from the recruitment, but now you had another individual in your ‘line’ who would go out and repeat the process, so you were also making a commission on his or her sales and all the other people they managed to recruit under them and infinitum. The problem was, at a quid a bottle, there were hardly any end users, because in the late 60’s this was at least four times the going rate for a domestic cleaning product. Consequently the whole pyramid imploded when new recruits were difficult to find and thousands of people who had signed up were left with garages full of Swipe. Likewise, it makes me wonder just how many bottles of those exotic sounding but barely imbibed brands of booze are lurking out there in the back of drinks cabinets.

But, to my amazement, the murderous tyrant was again praised by some imbecile called Gualberto Garcia Jones Esq, on a religious website, LifeSiteNews. Drones bring Gatwick and common sense to a standstill

SUSSEX Police recently admitted that its own drones launched to investigate the first sightings may have caused the ‘confusion’ at Gatwick which closed it for three days before Christmas, disrupting 1,000 flights and delaying 140,000 passengers. This, then, the latest embarrassment for the force which earlier admitted it was ‘possible’ there had been no drone at Gatwick at the time. Finally, the truth (possibly). Sounds like Sussex police’s Monty Python’s Flying Circus of total chaos and confusion meets April 1! (Maybe it was four pigeons in ra-ra skirts in formation - formation pigeon dancing? Or, like a few years ago, when a suspected drone at Gatwick turned out to be a plastic bag?) Police should have attached blue flashing lights to their drones going ‘Nee-naw, neenaw!’ so the public could tell which ones belonged to the good guys. Joking aside, police have the flight logs for their own drones. It should therefore take nothing more than some basic cross-referencing of those with the witness reports to determine which of the reported sightings were or could have been - the force’s own equipment, and in turn, which were suspect.

DRONE: Causing panic in the airport. In other news, it was reported that the suspect craft had buzzed the Gatwick control tower enabling airport staff to positively identify the brand and type. Err, what happened to that lead? But don’t worry! We were assured ‘there’s a really large-scale police operation going on behind the scenes.’ Yes, undoubtedly there was... trying to find a way to mop up this dreadful PR mess. News flash: earlier today police made a major breakthrough when they found a cache of drones in a secret warehouse location. “We believe they belong to a major new terrorist cell. “ A large number of ‘foreign persons’ were

detained. Our intelligence leads us to believe this new splinter group is called Am Azon. We believe this discovery represents a major contribution to public safety,” said a retired chief constable. Can they shut the lift? There are problems with the lift in our building. A recent report from the administrators states that if repairs are not carried out by early March the lift will be closed down. I live on the fifth floor and I am 78 years of age so it will be almost impossible for me to negotiate a climb of 80 steps. Spirit of Dali remains in Figueres THE modern town of Figueres, Girona has a population of 45,000 people and from most angles looks very normal for northern Spain. The area can claim an eclectic history however being the birthplace of Narcis Monturiol, the inventor of the first motor powered submarine, and singer Monica Naranjo. The huge Castell de San Ferran dominates the town but no more than the presence of world famous Catalan surrealist Salvador Dali. The legacy of Dali can be felt over Figueres, even decades after his death. The Dali Theatre and Museum helps to preserve his heritage and if you have one day in the town this is one of the best places to visit. It is built on the site of a theatre where Dali’s first exhibitions took place which was destroyed by a fire during the Spanish Civil War. In the 1960s Dali decided to rebuild the monument and dedicate it to his works and inspirations. A visit to his museum will provide a vivid insight into the ec-

centric imagination of Dali evidenced by the outside of the building which is designed like a Moorish style palace wall but decorated with giant eggs. Dali wanted his museum ‘to be a single block, a labyrinth, a great surrealist object’ and this he certainly achieved.

The museum does not feature Dal i ’s m ost wel l - known wor ks like ‘The Persistence of Time’ or ‘The Elephants’ as many of these are displayed in museums across the US as well as in Brussels and Madrid or held by private collectors. Instead the museum houses many pieces from Dali’s private collection, which are no less impressive, and together constitute the single largest collection of Dali works in the world by far. To truly understand the artist, a trip to this museum is essential. Included in the pieces on display are paintings, sculptures, collages, mechanical creations and other items w h i c h d i s p l a y D a l i ’s v i v i d imaginings. Other artist’s works do feature in the museum. A Frida Kahlo exhibition recently ended and numerous surrealist displays of art by artists in Dali’s private collection are permanent features.

The method of carb cycling is a concept which has been around for some time. Carb cycling means you can still eat carbs, as long as you eat the right ones, and on certain days. You have low-carb days (max 50g) for five days a week and moderate to high carbs for two days. A spike of carbs triggers metabolism whereas other diets don’t keep your body guessing, and your body settles comfortably into its new routine. My typical breakfast would consist of

REGARDING Leapy Lee’s reference to Henrietta Lacks, ‘she was a black American lady who died in the early 1950’s and is still alive today’?! When she was diagnosed with cancer of the cervix, tissue samples were taken (for researching her illness). At that time, cancer research was hampered by the fact that no matter how hard they tried, the other cultures died in a short time. Henrietta’s cell went to a medical research lab. After some time, it was noticed that her cells hadn’t died and were in fact reproducing. This was immediately realised to be a breakthrough for the researchers, no longer having a time limit imposed on their efforts. More samples were taken from Henrietta’s body, both before and after her death, without her or her family’s permission. Those cell cultures now known as Henrietta Lacks, were passed out to research establishments across the world and became a multi-million dollar business, and so many millions of people around the world are alive because of Henrietta. Plastics solution ALL these problems with plastics and the new ‘tax’ upon plastic bags. Here’s a couple of thoughts that the ‘intellectuals’ don’t seem to have thought of: a) Why not go back to using paper bags/carriers (a la Primark), using sustainable wood and which would be more easily recyclable. b) I remember seeing on TV a couple or so years ago a Japanese inventor who had come up with a table top machine that seemed to take all types of plastic (none of ‘the wrong sort’) and converted it back to oil. If this is feasible on a small scale, then why not produce some commercial size machinery that could be used by councils and other government agencies and get rid of the mountains of plastic and revert it to oil? SPAIN’S leading Bishop has hit out at ‘extremism’ which he claims is dividing the country. Archbishop of Toledo Braulio Rodriquez’s comments come as both sides on Cataluña’s independence debate continue to harden their rhetoric and after the far-right Vox of 12 seats in Andalucia. The Bishop’s remarks are also timely in light of news from Britain that pro-Brexit protesters called Conservative MP Anna Soubry a ‘Nazi’ and ‘scum’ while giving interviews outside Parliament. Soubry supports Britain remaining in the EU. Trends towards the use of divisive and insulting language in political discussions should disturb anyone who supports rational debate in democracies including Britain and Spain. The more such language is used, the more it becomes normalised within politics and wider society. And the more that happens the worse off a country and its citizenry becomes. Such language merely fuels cycles of hatred and resentment for those on the other side of an issue. It ultimately leads to both sides distrusting one another and those caught in the middle distrusting the political system itself, as Bishop Rodriquez pointed out. The only way to guard against this is to strive for respect and civility in political discourse. We are all entitled to express our views. But we should remember that if someone has an opposing opinion it does not make them ‘scum,’ merely different.

Reasons to be optimistic by Migel Jayasinghe READING Colin Bird’s column headed ‘Just 12 short years’ in the EWN (Issue 1747) with a picture of a man holding a ‘Mayan Calendar’ which predicted ‘impending doom’ on December 21, 2012, prompted me to write this as a response. I have been reading a book entitled Reality Unveiled: The hidden keys of existence that will transform your life and the world (2011) published by Awakened Media LLC. The author Ziad Masri has a much more positive outlook over our future than Colin. Masri quotes the scientist David Wilcock on the Mayan prediction. [The Source Field Investigations: The Hidden Science Behind the 2012 prophecies (2011) New York; Dutton]. The Mayans discovered what modern astronomers have authenticated as ‘the existence of a 25,920-

It’s a farce Mike Senker In my opinion Views of a Grumpy Old Man IT’S now a couple of weeks or so since the Gatwick airport debacle and it’s turned into a total farce. I will declare now that I have a personal interest in this as it was on December 20, the day that our daughter was flying from said airport to spend Christmas with us on a trip to Portugal. The thing I want to know is what happened? I mean, what the hell really happened? The whole place closed down because an overgrown toy was allegedly seen in the restricted airspace. Now, as I’m not totally stupid, if there was a drone buzzing about, they obviously had to close the airport until it was found and forcibly got rid of it. But they couldn’t find it, and as of now,

there are no official pictures of the said drone, and in fact, they are now saying that there may not have even been a drone at all! The UK police have zero, none, nada proof that there were any drones at all which led to over 1,000 flights being cancelled. Not to mention the couple who were arrested, named, and then freed because they had nothing to do with the non-existent drone and were charged with nothing; well how could they be if it never existed? I’m not a big conspiracy theorist, but there is something not quite right here. My phone can tell me where my car is parked when I can’t remember where I left it in the car park. Technology knows if I don’t have a TV licence and I’m watching EastEnders in my bungalow in East Cheam. If all that is possible, surely the might of the police and military should be able to get at worst case, a picture of this drone, and dare I suggest, find a way so this type of hoax never happens again.

In a scientifically carried out experiment, 7,000 expert meditators practised focusing on love and peace over a period of three weeks in 1978. During that period there was a significant drop in reported global crime (16 per cent). There was also a 72 per cent reduction in global terrorist activity and also less reported deaths by suicide and traffic accidents. The main thesis of Ziad Masri’s book is based on quantum physics and is not quite within my field of experience or learning. Colin Bird perhaps could make a better summary of it in a future column.

She came to me to learn how to cook western style food, but I think that I learned more from her! Vietnamese cuisine always combines fragrance, taste, and colour. It always has five elements. For example it includes five fundamental taste senses - spicy, sour, bitter, salty, and sweet, apparently corresponding to five organs (gall bladder, small intestine, large intestine, stomach, and urinary bladder). Vietnamese dishes also include five types of nutrients - powder, liquid, mineral elements, protein and fat - and Vietnamese cooks try to use

five colours, white, green, yellow, red and black in their dishes. The five flavours of Vietnamese food makes it unique and appealing, but it also makes it more complex. In other words when I make an Indian curry its far simpler, but the taste buds are never satisfied like they are when you cook a Vietnamese curry. My Vietnamese chef was a bit bossy to all my other chefs and she fell out with them all the time. One day I could feel the stress in the kitchen and I turned to her and said firmly binhtinh (which I think means calm down). She collected her knives and left the kitchen. I never saw her again. I hope that I said the Vietnamese words correctly and that I did not offend her!

Before December 2 the party looked left, shoring up Susana Diaz’s PSOE government although Rivera vowed that there would be no repetition this time. Thanks to extreme right-wing Vox’s 12 parliamentary seats, the still-acting regional president cannot form a government although hers was the most-voted party. Meanwhile, this gives Ciudadanos the opportunity of entering a Partido Popular government enabled by Vox. Ciudadanos campaigned to oust the PSOE and Susana Diaz from the regional government but voters know that political promises are piecrusts meant to be broken. Long-term for centrist Ciudadanos, and when seen from outside Andalucia, that might be one promise it would be better to break.

The Council of Ministers has approved the measure, which is designed to cut the death toll from road accidents. At the moment 66 per cent of road fatalities occur on secondary roads, about half of which are due to cars leaving the road, usually due to excessive speed. Spain joins other European countries which have lowered the speed limit on their secondary roads, in the case of France to 80kph. The Netherlands, Denmark, Ireland, Finland, Cyprus and Malta also have an 80kph limit while Sweden’s is the lowest at 70kph. There are four countries in Europe with a higher limit; the United Kingdom at 96kph (60 miles per hour), while Germany, Austria and Romania keep the maximum at 100kph. The lowering of the speed limit on Spanish secondary roads is part of the battery of measures of the Directorate General of Traffic (DGT) for 2019. Fines for not wearing seat belts will also be tightened, and the use of other vehicles such as bicycles and scooters will be regulated. The reduction in the maximum limit will affect around 7,000 kilometres of roads. Drivers of vans, lorries and buses which until now could reach a maximum of 90kph on these roads will have to keep to an 80kph limit. Trafico roads department is planning to make the new limit effective by the end of this month. It is in the process of adapting existing signs using stickers, as was done when speed was temporarily reduced on motorways to 110kph in 2011.

ROAD TEST by Nick Fletcher CITROEN’S C4 Cactus hatchback has extrovert SUV styling and puts the emphasis on its ultra-comfortable ride, generous equipment levels and very competitive pricing to give it a distinct edge in a hard-fought market sector. The Cactus will appeal to those seeking a stand-out image in what can sometimes be a rather dull hatchback class, and with prices starting at €20,517 (£18,505) for the entry level Feel models, it certainly grabs the attention. While there are petrol and diesel engines in the lineup, the popular choice is the 1.2-litre 110hp turbo-petrol unit which combines perky performance with very good fuel economy. Top speed is 196kph (122mph), the 0-100kph time 9.2 seconds and average fuel consumption 21.7 kpl (61.4mpg). Emissions are low at just 106g/km. The Cactus has an elegant yet robust look with an eye-catching front end. Inside, the unconventional appearance continues with a chic

The driving position is very good, as is all-round visibility and overall the Cactus provides a very pleasant driving experience.

Cyclists collide on bridge SPANISH cycling brothers Gorka and Ion Izagirre were involved in a nasty crash during the Ormaiztegi cyclocross race while making their debut in Astana colours in the Basque CX event on Sunday. The siblings were forced to retire from the race, with Gorka needing treatment for a facial injury. A teammate later tweeted: ‘Despite a hard crash… Ion and Gorka are not seriously injured. Gorka only has four stitches in his eyebrow, but this won’t affect his start to the 2019 season.’ The collision appears to have been caused by Gorka as he cycled onto a bridge from a muddy descent, with Ion unable to avoid a collision as he rode up behind.

no major problems. “We knew more or less what we were going to find and we stuck to our plan,” he said. Speaking previously ahead of the tournament, Sainz said the crew had “very good” team spirit. “From my point of view, we have the strongest team that will be competing at Dakar 2019. New F1 Ferrari head FERRARI’S Formula One team has announced that Mattia Binotto will replace Maurizio Arrivabene as director. The team said in a statement the decision was taken following ‘lengthy discussions.’ Binotto, 49, joined the Scuderia Ferrari test team as an engine engineer in 1995 and held the same position in the racing team from 1997 to 2003. He became its technical manager in July 2016. Binotto was the brains behind Ferrari’s SF71H which made its debut at last year’s Australian Grand Prix. It was last driven at the 2018 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix. Ferrari is believed to have d e c i d e d against renewing Arrivabene’s contract following rumours that his relationship with driver Sebastian Vettel had taken a turn for the worst. Arrivabene first joined the

team in 2014. He was also said to have had run ins with Binotto. Arrivabene said both rumours were ‘fake news’ before he was let go. The change in personnel follows a disappointing series of races for Vettel. Ferrari itself has not won a F1 Grand Prix in 11 years, when Kimi Raikkonen took home the title in 2007.
